ISAIAH SANDOVAL (HAWTHORNE)
I see people in the Arctic. Going to make food
Joel Hinze (sealy texas)
i agree with tyler.
Loyola Hawks (Oakville, ON)
Our class thinks that this picture was taken during the winter because of the snow that we see. We think this picture was taken somewhere north in a place that is very cold. Places we think this may be are Iceland or Northern Canada. In the picture we see tents that are used to help keep people warm. We see smoke coming from the tents which means there is fire burning in them. Perhaps this fire is cooking food. We think that food they might be eating is fish or whale. We also think that dogs, like huskies, may have brought these people here. These dogs are snow dogs used for dog sledding. Finally, we see people wearing winter clothes, but they look different from the clothes we wear.
Taylor (NJ)
I think some Artic tribes are trading with scientists.
J (NJ)
This is a tribal gathering or offering taking place in a colder climate seemingly Antartica, Asia, or Alaska.
jakoby (missouri)
I think thes pepole are native americans. they are in the artic and they are eating pig skin
Jacob (Boston)
Two people from the same tribe are trying to make a good trade for one another. I think they may be trading either food or bracelets. They look like they are in the Arctic, it takes place in the winter and this picture looks like it was taken in the past.
Taoyu Wang (NY)
1) The people in this picture all wear distinctive clothing which suggest they have rich cultural backgrounds. Perhaps they are in the Arctic? It is either dawn or sunrise. A man (I think he is a man) in the background has two stick-like strange devices that radiates a blue light around the head. 2) From this picture alone you can't see any plants. The horizon in the distance is unclear. Perhaps they are researchers that came to the Arctic to study. 3) The stuff on the plate that the woman offered to the other women are ring-shaped. The side of a tent is lit with a red light.
Noah (Brooklyn,NY)
It looks like they are having dinner, since a woman is passing out something on a tray and the sun is setting, also the man on the right looks excited to take one. The fire on the right contrasts the electric lights being carried by a man on the left, both in color and in nature of fuel. It is clearly cold but everyone looks content. Reading the reveal is fascinating, nothing in the picture suggests that the men are reindeer herders, but that is a cool job. I looked up stroganina and found out that it is a dish made of frozen fish, probably not something I would try. However, I had never heard of eating frozen meat so that was intriguing.
Makenna (Graves County)
I infer that these people are somewhere really cold, maybe Antarctica. I think that the girl is giving the man some kind of food. Maybe they are celebrating something, since there is a group of people gathering together and giving gifts.
Feliks (Calgary, Alberta)
@Makenna Off topic, but there are no non-scientific residents in Antarctica. I do agree that they are sharing gifts, or a special celebration not unlike our Christmas.
Jaiden trujillo (Graves County)
I infer that these people are living in Antarctica and the girl is giving food to the boy in this image. I can see some type of food on a plate being given and I can see snow. I also know that usually, food is on a plate so I infer that the food on the plate is being given to the guy in this picture.
chase (graves)
there are two different types of tribes eating food together and a tradition or special moment
wyatt (gravescountymiddle school)
it looks like a feast because their is a group of people and they are eating together and their is a person giving them food.they also look like family or close Friends celebrating.
Noah Tompkins (unites states)
This picture was taken at an awfully cold location, it’s likely taken somewhere northern where climates are below freezing. the natives there look to be in some type of group or tribe they are all wearing heavy coats, caps and gloves to secure themselves from the chilling climate. They live in tents so they can move to other locations effortlessly when the weather begins to intensify. Implying that they are nomadic. it appears two people from the tribe are indulging on a plate of treats, one of the ladies looks happy to see the plate full of treats.Despite the freezing temperatures the aroma and snowscape seem awfully pleasant
Bailey (United States)
The first thing I notice in the photo is that everybody in it is wearing heavy coats with a very similar print on all of them. This signifies they could possibly be related or maybe in a some sort of group. It is clear they are in a very cold location, hence the snow. The tents behind them make me believe they travel a lot since it would be very easy to pack up with minimal supplies. You can also see some smoke coming out of the tents and the illuminated glow of a fire on the side of one of them. This could be to help them keep warm or they are getting ready to have a meal. You can see the sun setting in the background; meaning it's about evening time, so they are probably preparing dinner. To further add to this theory, the women in the front seems to be holding some sort of unusual food. In conclusion, I think what's happening in this photo is a gathering of locals getting ready to have a holiday meal together.
Julia Hu (Taipei Taiwan)
In this picture, there are a group of people sharing food and chatting with each others. The sky is mixing with many color. There are pink, light purple, bright orange, little bit of gray and blue. I think those people might be Eskimos because of their dressing. They all dress a dark blue coat with colorful wrinkle. The tents has smoking coming out, so it should be their meal time.
葉子誼 (Taipei)
There are a few inuits in the middle of the picture. The background of the picture is are some tents with special icons. I think it's on a chilly icy winter evening. They are sharing some delicious handmade dishes with their neighbors. Some people in the left side of the picture are gathering to discover some new things. I think this is a warm picture.
賴楷方 (Taiwan)
There are some people wearing the Mongolian costumes. They all look chilly. But with their mutual help such as giving food and lighting a fire, they bodies become warmer and warmer, even their heart. They restore their energy tonight to continue their trip tomorrow, and meet next challenge. Through this picture, I think that teamwork can overcome any difficulty.
Treaty (Taipei Taiwan)
This picture was taken at a very cold place, it’s probably captured at North Pole. People there wear heavy clothes, hats and gloves in order to protect themselves from the chilling weather. They also live in tents so they can move to other places easily when the weather is worsening. Two women in the picture are sharing something, a little bit like a special kind of food you can eat when it’s cold. Although the snow is pretty heavy, the sun near the horizon still turn the sky into a beautiful color between orange and purple.
Izzy J (LCMS)
In this picture, there are people giving things or trading goods with Eskimos. I know this because there is a lady handing a plate of things to the Eskimos. In this photo, it is winter and in the cold months. I know this because they are dressed very warmly in animal hides and have fires going near their teepees to keep warm. These people live in a place that is normally very cold. I know this because there are no trees or plant life of any kind. They are also dressed very warmly like they are used to the cold. Therefore, these are Eskimos trading with people in very cold months.
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
After the reveal I realized I was kind of thinking in the right direction. The people are trying things out of their traditional foods.
Thomas O'Mara (Lubbock, Texas)
The elder of the tribe seems to be giving one of the younger members of the tribe seal skin strips.
Tatiana Contreras (6Adms)
I see they have coats sense there in the cold and they have a tent that looks like there house . Also they have lights i think because to see well its dark and they have smoke coming out of the tent .
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
In this picture I see a group of people standing outside on the beach having conversations and sharing food. They seem to be enjoying themselves and trying to stay warm. I can see smoke coming out from the top of the teepees which leads me to think that they have fires inside to keep them warm. On the right you can see fire outside of the teepee. This leads me to think they also have a fire outside or the fire is starting to spread. I feel as if this is a place where they are teaching others about their culture and what the people in the past had done. The woman in the front of the picture is holding the plate in which I think its food looks as if she's telling the other woman about what it is.
daniel (usa)
I think its a indian tribe in cold weather standing outside there teepee as one of them offers a gift
Edward Meadows (6A DMS)
there is some people in what looks to be the arctic some person is giving some stuff to some person there a small group of people talking about something
jalen edwards (mainsfiled tx)
I see a group of people that are in a cold weather , they are eating and have their houses there , they are having conversations and being happy where they are , some people are trying to get hot being close to the wood fire . I think that because in the picture in the front they show a woman and a man talking and she is like trying to give him food , the other people are trying to get warm by being close to the wood fire , and talking.
Benjamin (Home)
I think what’s happened owning is like a trade of some sort. There are people in the back socializing is what it looks like. The huts are probably where they sleep.
Joseph (home)
What is going on in this picture? A woman is giving a man a plate of bracelets. What do you see that makes you say that? The woman giving the man a plate of bracelets. What more can you find? People standing in a group in the background.
danielle (at home)
I think this is a tribe of people in a cold climate either in the north or south pole. the lady is giving some sort of food to the man. And they are wearing very warm clothes. there are some people in the background in a line or something. there are also some weird houses in the back ground were the people are standing the line in the back is maybe were they get there food from.
rt (timberview)
I think it's an Indian tribe getting ready to eat as the sun goes down. Because the sun is actually going down and the women seems to be handing a man food. I can find that it's very snowy so it's around Europe, Russia, or Canada.
Ayden (Vienna,Virginia)
I think this is a tribe of people in a cold climate, probably the north or South Pole. They are wearing very warm clothing and there is a lot of snow on the ground. There looks like there is a line waiting for access to the tent which probably has a village elder a village leader or it is where the people go to get there meals.
Marissa (Tx)
I think the Indian tribute from Alaska are getting ready to start cooking because in the tent in the back. There is smoke coming out. Also because there is two people in the front giving something like a food to the boy/girl.I can really tell that it is cold because the tribute is wearing cloths on top of cloths.
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
@Marissa That's a good observation about thew food being cooked from inside the tents.
Devin D F (San Antonio)
i think that they are an indian tribe in alaska i think that they are getting ready before they go out to hunt for food i think it is early in the morning at sun rise
rt (timberview)
@Devin D F i agree that they are going out to hunt for food,
Jayden A. (sanantonio)
1. they are trying to keep warm. 2. they have coats on and the camp fire's. 3. it is snowing so they made a camp fire to keep warm.
sally (texas)
in this picture its showing this native tribe celerbrating and were there are I know that there in somewere place cold because what they are wearing and also there is this older lady giving food to maybe his friend or maybe his family member than also I reailized that were they have there shelter its a teapy and I know that there a native American tribe and also the fire to keep them warm.
Malte B. (Germany)
I suppose that the picture was taken at the North Pole. I think the people in the picture are celebrating something. Maybe the cold winter is over and the warmer season begins. In addition, the young guy could came of age this year and the people celebrate this step in his life.
Ricardo (Aldama)
This picture is showing a native tribe in the Arctic place. The woman is carrying some sort of food and she is sharing it among her tirbe.Though the people look like they are dressed fancier than us that does not mean that they are at a festival or party, I am assuming that it is just what they need to wear to stay warm, and that is what they usually wear.I believe that the people are probably a tribe and they have to share everything cause there’s not much out there.
Jayden Solis (San Diego)
At first, I predicted they were some sort of nomadic group or Native American tribe in Asia or Iceland having a feast with meat delicacies that their hunters gathered. This was partially correct since it really was a group of nomadic herders from Siberia, Russia sharing fish and deer delicacies.
Cody Bennett (Texas)
Their not practicing social distancing. There are probably more than 10 people there. They seem to be living in the North Pole or Antarctica.
Alec Martinez (United States)
In this picture I see people all around in a pack. Helping each other survive maybe as a tribe. They are providing for others.
Cody Bennett (Texas)
@Alec Martinez nice conclusion
alexis (united states)
in this picture i can easily see that it is winter because of the way they are dressed, the snow on the ground, and fire for extra warmth. In the picture it looks like an older woman is giving and offering this guy, who is probably a neighbor or a friend, some sort of food? or something else that is making him very happy.
Jackie Reyes (Arlington)
In the picture it looks like she’s giving something to her. I think this because there is something on the plate and they both look really happy. Also they look like they are in a very cold area because they are really covered up with warm clothes.
nakayla (grand prairie Texas)
i think they are having a get together and there are lights and i think the lady is holding food i guessed there are at somewhere cold they are wearing heavy jackets and i can see one light in one tent and that's all i can think off.
nakayla (grand prairie Texas)
i think they are having a get together and there are lights and i think that lady is holding food i guess and there at somewhere very cold they are wearing heavy jackets and there is a light in one of the tents and thats all i can think of
nakayla (grand prairie Texas)
i think they are having a get together and there are lights and i think the lady is holding food i guess and there at somewhere that is really cold they are wearing heavy jackets there is a light in one tent and that's all i know of or think.
Jasmine (Somerville, MA)
This picture is showing a native woman in the Arctic Zone. The woman is carrying some sort of food and she is sharing it among her community. Though the people look like they are dressed fancier than us that does not mean that they are at a festival or party, I am assuming that it is just what they need to wear to stay warm, and that is what they usually wear. I think from what I can see that the children are either in the teepees or off around playing a game, or they don't have children. I believe that the people are probably a tribe and they share what they have because they don't have that much.
Jackson (Arlington,Texas)
In this picture they look like they are trading or even celebrating something. They also look like they Are in a very cold climate and look of either the Russian or Indian culture. What makes me say that is the fact that they are all in a area together while giving and they all look fairly happy. Why I said the culture was because what was on the plate and what they where wearing. I couldn’t really find anything except the fact that there somewhere near Antarctica or it’s winter somewhere.
Ella Biddlecom (Dunkirk,NY)
Team 6A Dunkirk Middle School In this picture there is people sharing food with each other I think this because there is something on the plate that looks like food, they also look like there is a lot of people living in one spot because they are all gathered together and there is many tents, I can also see that they are living in a very cold climate, They might be researchers in some where like Antarctica. One other thing I can see is that they are by a body of water and might fish there.
Adrianna (6A DMS)
I think that in this image, there is a tribe of possibly eskimos (judging by their looks) sharing rations with each other. I think they have to share with each other because their environment is very difficult to live in and supplies are probably low.
Gabriel Igori (Timberview, Tx)
They're sharing food with eachother, I think this because there's something on a plate so I'd hope its food. I think they're houses are in the background and theres some weird lights too
Alec (United states)
@Gabriel Igori yeah, I agree especially them like when it shows them giving food.
efrain (timberview tx)
they are sharing with each other foods of theres.what i see that is making me think is that the one lady is giving out foods to other.what more can i find people in the back just talking and communicating and how cold it is outside in the cold and they are camping and how the sun is going down because its starting to turn dark. How they are having camp fires in the little houses in the back so they can stay worm also they have little lights in the back where they talk maybe those also keep them worm. How they have these type of sweaters that really makes them look warm. Also how they are by sum type of waters. snow really don*t go up their feet.
Egan Boyle (Pa)
It looks like the lady is collecting trash. And in the background there is a group of people standing next to a hut talking
addison (6A Dunkirk middle school NY)
this image shows someone giving another person some type of food and they are like camping and might be in canada because it is cold there and it looks like they are by a lake because by like rivers etc. it also looks cold and they don't have homes on strong ground there are just like tents i can also see that there is some kind of smoke coming out of the tents
Bella Gustofson (Dunkirk NY)
In this picture it looks like they are having a festival. They look like they are gathered around and talking. The sunrise has many colors like pink and blue and purple. I also see there is smoke rising into the sky They seem to be in cold weather gathering for something.
Hanan Mohamad Narvaez (Dunkirk NY)
In this picture there are different types of colors, a sunrise, people gathered in front of teepees, smoke, and people offering items to the people around them. I think these people are a tribe that just had a meeting but they didn't really spread around the place after the meeting was over. I also see someone in front of two items in that look sort of like torches to light up the place, the teepees also have smoke rising through the top so I guess that this tribe is also making a fire in the teepees to keep them warm when they go inside to sleep or collect an item. The items that the women is offering to the person look like bracelets but dog bones at the same time. Behind the teepees there is something that looks like a road and behind the teepee on the right side t looks like there's a body of water that was frozen into ice. I think this tribe is settled somewhere near or on Alaska because of its cold snowy climate.
Hannah (Ontario)
It's a Native festival, because they have teepees and there is a bunch of food and people. It is somewhere close to the North pole because there's a lot of snow. If you look closely to the picture, all you can see is snow and people. There's food and lights. They may be handing out fish or bones to everyone, or it could be a small family gathering.
Giada (6A DMS)
The image appears to have people from some sort of tribe sharing food. The tribe looks like they are used to the colder weather so maybe a tribe in Russia because Russia has some of the coldest places in the world. Since there is teepees I can assume that the people in the image travel around the area. Usually teepees are used as a tent which are somewhat easy to assemble and disassemble. Maybe the people are polar bear hunters. In the distance you can see water. Maybe even a frozen lake??? Polar Bears like the cold and the snow and there snow on the ground so maybe???
Emmy 3rd Grade (Framingham, MA)
In this picture I see colors and teepees and I bet it is sunrise because it is getting light out. And there are people and I see it’s cold because. there is snow and someone is eating.
Janie (Newton)
It looks as if there is a gathering of maybe a tribe or simply just a group of people. I think this because of the people in the back round. Also the woman sharing her food with a neighbor. It also seems as if maybe they are trying to get warm based on the fact that they are in many layers of clothing and they t-pees in the back with smoke coming out of the top which signals that there is probably a fire in the tent.
Michael (salem)
People are sharing food, and trying to stay warm. What makes me say that is the woman is giving food to the man in the coat and they have coats on so that says to me that there cold and are trying to get warm. I can see smoke coming from the teepees, and i also see lanterns on the floor.
Lily (Canada)
i think that these people are trying to keep warmth it looks like a nations type of winter with a campfire in a teeppee
Avery Hodges (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
I see a snowy field, with a teepee excreting smoke from the top, likely from a fire inside. Based on the people I can see in this photo, I would assume that it takes place somewhere in Asia. The people there are wearing layers of intricate clothing, and one lady seems to be holding a plate of what I think is a type of food. Maybe they are ice fishing, or looking for certain sea creatures only native to that area. I wonder how they got there, and why?
as (a)
This looks like a cold place with lots of snow. One person is handing out what looks like rolls and they are all wearing thick jackets and coats. This reminds me of Nunavat in Canada.
Elsa (Connecticut)
I see a group of people in very cold weather, and it looks like they are staying warm by building fires, and wearing heavy clothing. It also looks like they built the fires in huts, to trap the warm air. I see one person going around offering food to the other people. It is probably in a cold place like Alaska or Greenland. When I look at the picture, it reminds me of winter here in CT.
as (a)
the also have lanterns
Avery Hodges (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@Elsa I believe it takes place somewhere in Asia, based off of the people I see. What makes you believe it is in Alaska or Greenland?
Juana (Milwaukee, WI)
I see a group of people that are in a cold weather , they are eating and have their houses there , they are having conversations and being happy where they are , some people are trying to get hot being close to the wood fire . I think that because in the picture in the front they show a woman and a man talking and she is like trying to give him food , the other people are trying to get warm by being close to the wood fire , and talking.
Katelyn (Portland)
In this photo the colors take over the picture. The sky is dimly lit in the background and the smooth purple, the bright torange and the inky black make up the background of the picture. Right behind the people little huts are nestled safely into the snow but even though the cold is piercing outside the huts seems to be heated up by the warmth of the fire. Women and men stand in the cold and all of them are dressed for cold weather becaue they are all wearing big coats that seem to be made out of some sort of animal skin so that they can keep warm, they have hats that covered their whole head and on top of that they have hoods, they are also weainrg mittens that provide extra warmth in the cold seasons. A crowd of people are standing in the back near the huts and seem to be discussing something and toward the front of the image two women stand taking and one woman is wearing a brightly colored scarf on her neck and is carrying a plate of some sort of food. The two women from different areas or one is at a higher social status that the other because they are wearing two different colors but the same type of clothing so maybe the woman with the colorful and bright clothes could be trying to sell this woman whatever is on the plate. We can really know where exactly they are or what they are doing and what is happening between the two women.
Jaden (San Mateo)
In this photo several things are noticeable. In the foreground, I see women holding some kind of food on a tray in a snowy place. They are dressed warmly because it is cold and there are patterns on their clothes. Similarly, in the background, there is a group of 5 people from the same tribe and one teepee behind them. In addition, there is a second teepee next to a campfire. Surprisingly, the food on the tray resembles raw fish and I think it might be sashimi since the color matches. There could possibly be people inside both teepees because there is smoke coming out of the top. It is possible that the tribe might be the Nenets from Siberia, and they are eating breakfast since it is at sunrise. The teepees might be made from reindeer since they herd them. I can’t wait to find out what it really is about.
Arianna (Milwaukee)
In this picture, there are people in a cold area and it looks like a woman is either giving another woman food or trading something with another woman to maybe get into one of the warm tipis in the background. I see that there ts snow o the ground and they have a big coat like thing on. Also, I see a woman giving another woman something that I think is food. I can also find that their somewhere where the sky is a lot of colors maybe something is changing in the sky.
Tianna (Milwaukee, WI)
I think there are people from different places visiting some type of tribe probably a native based off how the man on the left side of the picture looks and based off the type of "tents" that they have. I also think that it could be possible that two different tribes are simply just traveling together
Kalia Hernandez-Mercado (milwaukee)
What I see in the photo is a group of people camping in the winter. I know this because they are tents present in the photo as well as the snow on the ground. It seems like they are celebrating as you cab see as the women is giving sum sort of food. They are all also in a large area in the open. That makes me believe that they are used to it or have done it before, due to the fact that if you didn't know how to camp or be in the cold you would be closer to populated lands/cities.
Vivian Wang (PCC)
Some people are visiting people who are in charge of the two cones and ask about their situation. For example, is there anything they need etc. I'm just curious what are the two cones exactly used for. I saw an old woman is giving something to another woman, and a group of people are talking behind. The old man at the left corner might be the old woman's husband accompanying her to visit people. The picture might be taken in Mongolia.
Meriyame Tesfaye (Seattle WA)
I saw those peoples living in a small tent and it looks like there are not many peoples living in that place and I think the only thing these people eat is a fish-like I see in the picture because there is nothing on the background except the ice. the way they dress seems they have a culture.
Yas (Mke)
Looking closely at the background, I see two tipis, surrounded with what looks like a torch or light. Tipis are built by Native American's, which are made with animal skin and wooden poles. This gives me a clue that they're Native Americans. Also, the style of their clothes and what it's made of, helps me with that inference. Some other details that I have noticed is that they're in the cold, considering the snow and coats.
Maritza Vazquez (417)
In the picture there was a snowstorm and it's freezing outside that's why they have fire coming out of the tents and i see groups of people eating done where the lady is giving food to the man I see the people wearing the big jackets and i also see fire coming out of the tents makes it seem like they have camp fire in it. I also see a sunset which isn't dark out but there really isn't light either.
Andres Montes (Gresham, Or)
I believe they are in the Arctic showing others the life their ancestors lived
Alcoma School (Rainier)
The grade 7-9 English class thought it was about people trying to survive the winter in a cold country, someone is holding some kind of meat; Aboriginal people sharing or trading something. Also a small celebration in the background; Ice landers living in tents; two different aboriginal tribes meeting to trade for gifts and celebration; some supplies were burnt so people are sharing goods/supplies; First Nations living in tents giving muffins to their tribe members at some kind of gathering; a lady from greenland giving people fish so they don't starve.
Chloe (Milwaukee)
Somebody is giving someone food because they might not have that much food or they are having a get together The lady has a plate of food and there is a lot of people around and everybody is happy and talking to each other. They live in a cold environment.
Ying Chu Wang (Taiwan)
According to this picture,we can see white snow covered every inch of the landscape. It could have snowed a lot last night. This place should be in high latitudes because it is very cold there. And I guess the local area is going through eternal time. Look at those residents, they all wear thick clothes with a variety of patterns. And turbans, scarfs, and gloves are also indispensable. Behind the villagers are the constructions which are similar to tents. They are called "Tepee",which is a traditional residence of Native Americans. And the slowly rising smoke should be caused by firewood burning.Maybe this must be the source of warmth on chilly days. Moreover,I see that the woman in the picture is sharing something delicious with the man.I think this may be the so-called spirit of selfless sharing.
IHsuan (Taiwan)
The sun hiding under the horizon not only stains the gloomy sky with briliant orange and pink but also adds extra warmth to the snow-covered land. Judging by the deep and shallow footprints on the ground, it seems to be a heavy snow not long ago. People in the photo are wearing heavy traditional costumes because of the cold weather. The clothes are basically dark-colored with pattern decoration, showing a full exotic style. Heavy coats and headgears can block cold wind and snow. Both useful and beautiful. The two cone-shaped tents located in the snow also draw my attention. Taking a closely look, one of them is decorated with a pattern similar to their traditional costumes. In the weather suitable for enjoying hot pot, it might be cooking or setting a heater inside so white smoke rising from the top of the tents!
馮欐絜 陳奕彤 (Taiwan)
It was a beautiful evening. While the sun set, the sky turned into a miracle color mixing with purple, pink and yellow. Two women in the picture dressed in traditional clothes with their ethnic patterns and shared the cuisine with each other. On a blanket of pure-white snow, there were two tents which were made of canvas and were decorated with the same patterns of the clothes. Despite the fact that their life looks simple, people there seem to be satisfied to live with magnificent nature without technology.
Elijah (Milwuakee)
In the photo you can see that the lady is sharing some sort of food and that it is a gathering of a tribe. You can see that they all are wearing similar looking clothes and live in TP's.
Mrs. Griffin (Milwaukee)
@Elijah - so what do you think they are doing as tribe? Why are they gathering?
Alcoma School (Rainier)
The grade 4-6 class thinks that they are trading for a storm; Inuit celebrating a birthday or hanging out; Passing around hot chocolates; Going camping; fur trading; making a fire to stay warm.
A.K. (Wi)
I think that it is Indians in the winter time. I think that they are having some sort of party. I also think this is in the evening time because the sun is beginning to set. I think this because there are a couple Indians in the front exchanging food, and in the back there are many around a fire. Also they were probably camping out there because they have little huts.
Edison 4th graders (New Jersey)
In the picture, there are nomads gathering together. The beautiful sky indicates that they might be waiting for the northern lights in Greenland or Iceland. On the other hand, these could be indigenous people in Alaska gathering for a traditional event. The photo shows food being shared and people gathering to socialize.
Kayla (Milwaukee)
A woman may be selling or giving things out to the people around her. They could be traveling together or they just ended up in the same place. I see that a woman is holding a plate full of something, so I inferred that she could be handing things out or selling them. I see that they’re in the cold with many tipis around them for people to live in, so they could be colonizers making that part their land for a little as they travel.
Cynthia (Taiwan)
Under the marvelous gradient sky stands eight people wearing elegant traditional clothes. According to the thick blanket of snow and their heavy jackets, the weather must be freezing cold. Also, there’re smoke coming out of the cone shaped tents, the residents must raised fire in the middle of their dwellings to keep them warm and cook meals. Along with the stunning pink sky, the tent looks like several ice cream cones left upside down on some fluffy cotton candy. Base on the shape and well-designed totem of the structure, we guess the residents are Indians; and the tents are the well known “tepee”.
Xitlali (Milwaukee)
I see someone sharing food. I don't know what kind of food but it seems like it could be traditional because everyone is all together. they have t-pee tents with smoke coming out to keep them warm possibly
Kennedy Smith (Milwaukee)
I think people are out camping in the snow. I believe this because I see a lot of people out and see a tent in the back that makes me think they are camping and I also see a women passing out some kind of food. And they might be celebrating a tradition or something.
Lilian (Taiwan)
It is a cold snowy day , and the land is covered with thick snow.Due to the heavy snow , everyone wears cotton-padded clothes and also put on his or her hat.I consider that the clothes are their traditional clothing.Apart from this , they probably make them by themselves. They live in white triangle tents which have traditional patterns on the appearances .They seem to light a fire inside the tent since the smoke is wafting to the air from the top of the tent. Those people might be the members of the tour group, since the person at the right side of the picture and the man at the left side seem not the same ethnicity. The right one looks like Asian and the lift one looks like European or American. They come to experience the unique culture at this awesome island. While they are waiting for watching sunrise, the local who takes the plate provide the local dessert to the tourists.
Bob (McDonough)
It appears that someone is offering the other person some sort of animal fat of blubber. I have learned somewhere that people who live deep in the arctic eat blubber/animal fat as a way to help preserve heat.
S751/1 (Argentina)
In the photo there are some people who may be celebrating the end of winter. They must be eskimos in Siberiaand they may be carrying out a traditional celebration. They might have received the New Year. The may be eating traditional ethnic food, which they can't have bought at the supermarket, they must have brought it with them. There are a few tents in the middle of the snow. The clothes can't be very comfortable but they look warm.
吳思琳 (台灣)
There was a lot of snow which wear the ground a heavy white coat. The sky seem the sun set was also pretty romantic. People were dress in clothes which have some traditional pattern, and the clothes look so heavy , I think that is because they needed such a protaction to fight with the freezing weather. I also guess that these people were climbers, who wanted to admire the beautiful sun set and took a break here.
黃泓皓和侯學彣 (台灣)
In this snow-covered world, a crowd of Russians were holding a traditional ceremony. The girl wearing traditional costume and headkerchief gave a plate of hand-made dessert to the chubby guy who she had a crush on. The boy who wore a suit of totem-striped clothes received the gift from the girl shyly. There are other people behind them blessing their relationship at this poetic sunset. I see a lovely couple in front of the screen. And there are some tents in the background. Also there are several clansmen behind them. Meanwhile, one thing in the picture grab my attention. If you look at the top of the tent carefully. You would find that there are some smoke flowing out of that. Also, you could see some red light through the wall of it. I guess there may be some people preparing delicious warm cuisine for upcoming ceremony.
Tuan Lam (Seattle, Washington)
Question 1: In the picture, I can see the lady going around and sharing her food with other people. Also, the time is sunset and that place seems to be very cold. From the far, I can see smoke coming on top of the tent and a group of people gathering around to do something. Question 2: I say it is a cold place because all of them are wearing very warm costumes and those five people seem to stand really close to each other, kind of like warming up their bodies. Also, the lady is holding a plate of something to share with each other. Question 3: I can also find two tents, which seem to be very warm. There is a man holding two lamps, maybe for producing light. I guess the lady must cook the meal currently because there is still smoke becoming from the tent.
Roxanne (Taiwan)
In the North Pole or Antarctic area, the glow of dawn sparked the ground. It must have snowed massively for a long time so that a blanket of snow covered the surface without a miss. Not only did the sun rise, but the smoke billowed slowly, which might from the structures. They were places where people can live with a steeple, just like tents, but the different thing was that it had a circle base. They were made up of clothes covered ropes of hemp rope having indigenous patterns. Inside them may be some dishes cooking, so some people were lining up for breakfast, which the man shared with the woman. I guess their traditional meals were something fresh just hook up an hour ago. Besides, the clothes they wore might be an aboriginal design, which were dark and thick in order to adapt the weather
Ching-Hsien Tsai (Taiwan 🇹🇼)
In the picture, we could see two pyramid-shaped tents which looked like upside down cones emitting clouds of smoke, and it’s of high possibility that those tents are dwellings for people in the picture. We could also see people wearing thick traditional coat with special patterns on it, standing in the middle of nowhere, and with only few people and tents lying on the snow field. It’s safe to say that the weather was extremely freezing so that people dressed themselves in lots of clothes. Closely looking at the pattern on the tents, we could find out the fact that it’s the same as the one on people’s clothes. What also draws my attention is the smoke from the top. It’s reasonable to say that people set fire inside the tent. I guess it may be served as heaters. People could get warm or make delicious cuisines there. Hope those people have great time living there!
Ms. P's 1st Pd (Annandale, VA)
We infer that these people are an indigenous group because they live in tepees, and their clothes look like they're made out of wool. They are making fire to keep themselves warm and possibly cook food.
Eden (Seattle)
I think this people are native Alaskan people who live in a tent on the land of ice and the place looks there is not a lot of people live there.
Wenyin (House)
I see a group of people who probably from the same religion. It seems that they are family. And two women are sharing food and they look happy. They wore warm clothes because of the heavy snow. It makes me think the place there is super cold like Iceland. And there are a few people gathering together. Maybe they're talking about what's going on. I see there comes smoke from the top of the tent, maybe some people are cooking food inside for breakfast or dinner. The sky makes me think of that, because there might be a sunrise or sunset.
Nhi (house)
In the picture i see a group of some kind of religion and there was a lady sharing food with them shaped like a cone. On the top of the tents is like a smoke. The inside of the tents have some fires i hope that can people warmer I can tell that location is pretty cold and have a lot of snow. There seems to be a gathering or dinner happening with many people dressed warmly, making me think is in the Iceland.

In this picture, a group of villagers stand on the thick snow in the afternoon. All of them wear their special traditional clothing. I consider that these printed clothes are made by themselves. Their home look like white tent. There may have some heaters in their house. Thus, the smoke float out the top of the structures. Besides, the sky looks mysterious because of the glorious sunset. Perhaps, this vivid picture was shot in Alaska. There seems to be a party held by the local people. We can obviously see that there is a woman holding one plate and there are some specialities on it. I dared to speculate the food is made with fish, just like Japanese sashimi .However, these specialities is their staple food because we can't see any green plants in this picture. The land is covered by thick snow. All the objects in the picture combine with a unique artistic charm. That's the most splendid scenery I have ever seen.

In the picture, it looked like there was a lady going around and sharing the food that she made with the lady standing next to her. There are two tents behind them shaped like a cone. There is a light of fire reflecting on one of the tents. Hopefully it’s there to keep the people warm. There is a group of people huddled up together by the second tent. Maybe talking about what’s going on or what they’re going to do. I can tell they’re in a very cold location because there is a lot of snow and everyone in the picture has a coat. The time zone can be either the morning and the sun is rising or the afternoon by how the sun is setting down.
Myra (MIlwaukee)
Q: What is going on in this picture? A: I think this place is Greenland. The place looks cold. It also looks like they are not family, but someone close. Q: What do you see that makes you say that? A: I said Greenland because it is a cold place. The place looks cold because people are wearing warm clothes. I said that they don't look close, because of how they are talking. Two people in the front are talking while holding something in her hand and giving it to the other person. Five people in the back are having a group conversation. And the last guy up in the front is holding wood or bread is walking. Q: What more can you find? A: There are two tents, which look like they are producing heat, or the people are cooking, because of the smoke. There are lights, where the group of people is standing. There is snow on the ground, and it looks like the sun is about to go down.
Lidia Gebrewolde (Seattle,WA)
This is people in native clothing, perhaps in Alaska. Their homes look like teepee tents rather than houses. It would be much harder to live here than in Scotland because of the cold, although their clothes are usually thick and handmade.
alex (Ohio)
@Lidia Gebrewolde That is what I was thinking. I am not sure what is on the plate, but I'm guessing it is something of importance. My guess was bone, wood shavings, or some sort of food. Maybe this is a picture of a gather of some sort. Ether way, it is very beautiful!
Mollie Brinker (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
This is a very calming picture with the sun setting behind tipis with smoke floating out the tops of the structures. In the foreground, there looks to be an exchange between two women with one giving the other some food. I’m unfamiliar with whats on the tray… maybe the peel of a fruit of a part of an animal? The woman receiving the food has a small smile on her face. Maybe the food is a gift or offer to her and her family. There seems to be a gathering or dinner happening with many people dressed warmly, making me thing this is in Alaska. They have tribal printed clothing leading me to think these are natives to the area. There is artificial lighting behinds the women, so their society must be somewhat modernized, rather than solely relying on nature. There are two people, I noticed, who have the same patterns on their overcoats. Families could have different outfits symbolizing their heritage. This could also be a meeting of two different tribes sharing a meal.
Highcrest Kids (Illinois)
We think this is in Mongolia because of the people's clothing and the weather. It looks like evening. Maybe they are just hanging out together.
Mrs. Whitney's Class (Coopersville, Michigan)
We think that this group of people might be camping out to watch the Northern Lights.
Ashley barron (New york)
It looks like a small gathering probably with family might be celebrating something.
Leo (WA)
I think is something like party
MEL (Michigan)
i think it is some type of family gathering.

I think that this article will be about how climate change is not only affecting wildlife but it is effecting the people living nomadic lives in the northern hemisphere (North Pole To be exact) or the poll pole.
christina beaugrand (windsor ON)
northern lights festival?
Bridget Lassiter (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
In this picture I see people out in the snow in the cold maybe trying to get warm, I also noticed that they're two people are talking and what it looks like is one of them is trying to give the other one food.
lucian (Michigan)
I think that they are getting ready for spring and looking for animals they can hunt I also think they are getting together to have a big cook out
Avery (Michigan)
@lucian I disagree because I believe they are getting ready to do a ceremony where they sacrifice important things by trowing them into a fire.
Chase (Michigan)
@lucian I disagree because it seems they have food and there are no dog sled teams or weapons out so i don think they are going hunting for bigger game.
Queen (Beverly Hills, LA)
In this picture are people in a cold area. There‘s snow everywhere. In the background you can see the sunset and there are selfmade mini houses. They made fire and they are celebrating. They are talking and the woman has food on a plate. I don’t know what this is... They are wearing warm clothes. I know, sounds weird but it looks very cosy. I think this is in Alaska because there it’s also very cold and they also live like that.
maddie (milwaukee wisconsin)
what I think is going on in the picture it looks like they live in a very cold area and everyone is in pretty warm clothes. it looks like eveyone shares food and are togother in tents and stay warm togother. and as it goes dark they get there homes all warm.
Grace Trimpey-Warhaftig (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
natives from Alaska this is their life tee-pees and kuspuks sunsets and snow family and food peace and serenity That is the way to live an Alaskan life.
Alissa (Pius XI High School)
A tribe that is located somewhere cold is getting supplies or gifts from an elder. It also looks like this is an exhibit in a museum because of the artificial lights hidden in the snow.
Jada Goodwin (Milwaukee Wisconsin)
What is going on in the picture is that the people in the picture live in a very cold climate. They wear the same type of warm clothes but they are just different patterns. They share a lot of things because they do not have a lot of it. One of the people in the picture is sharing something with another person. They live in a simple teepee and there are not a lot of resources around them like water and trees. We can tell that they live there because they have nice shelter as you can see in the back of the picture.
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Color Photography Class The stuff on the plate looks like banana peels. Looks like Canada or Alaska. Maybe they are Eskimos. There are tents/teepees/tipis/tepees. Maybe on the plate is animal fat for cooking. The man on the left-maybe that is his glove? Or is he holding a cutting board? This looks like a normal day. There are two lights (solar?) stuck in the ground. Are they meant to be an entrance?
Allie M. (LCMS)
This picture takes place in Alaska. I know this because there is snow everywhere. In addition, there are two huts then nothing else which fits with Alaska because the Alaskan population is very spread out. Two different “tribes” are sharing food. I know this because the person receiving the plate of food looks really surprised. In addition, the two groups look nothing alike. The picture takes place around six pm. I know this because there is a sun setting in the background behind the people. Based on this evidence, this picture is of two tribe like groups sharing food in Alaska around six pm.
Matthew (Manistee)
@Allie M. I disagree with this for one reason it seems to make a good claim the the time does not seem right the sun sets from 7 to 8 not 6pm I good day
Lutschka (Germany)
There are native peolple maybe in Alaska and they are looking like they are wearing traditional clothing. The women in the front is holding a suspicious plate of food on her hand. In the background there are some tends also in traditional colour. It is generly looking loke an traditional event from the native people.
Bumbelbee (Germany)
In the picture are people with warm cloth. Their houses are looking very warm and I think it was very hard to build them. I don’t really know what they’re eating but it looks weird. The sky has very beautiful colors. I would like to see a sky like that too in my life.
skiller_isi_ (Germany, Stuttgart)
In this picture you see some people in a cold place which are looking at the sunset. It’s snow on the floor and they made some fire. It looks like they are camping and talking with each other. They have something on a plate it looks like food but I’m not sure. They are wearing much clothes that them don’t get cold. In the back you see something like water but I’m not sure about this it’s shiny but it could be also frozen stone.
Interagency Academy (Columbia City, Seattle)
Looks like Alaska Natives because of the snow, clothing and "tee pee" like structures. It looks like the sun is setting, so it's evening. Lots of people are out. The bone shavings are on a silver platter which tells us that they are a delicacy of some sort given to the family.
Grüffelo 2 (Germany)
I see humans they live very hard and have hard conditions. Nice that also in this part of the world humans live.
Heather (San Mateo)
During the sunset, people in the community just chill out? People wear a very heavy jacket with a foot deep snows cover the floor. I would believe the weather is very very cold like -4F. I don't know what is on the plate. Would it be sawdust to light it up the fire?
Günter (World)
It is snowy
Sam (Bangalore)
This place looks like a cold region, such as Iceland. People seems to be trying to keep themselves warm and have something hot.
Hello (Scotland)
The picture are cold. In the background is a horizont with a nicley sky.The tent in the middle of the picture are on the top snow. The people in the forground look like theywere cold because they had many of jacked and mufflers. It gaves eatenin the forground.
Zoe (Michigan)
This picture looks like it was taken somewhere in Alaska because of the land scape, attire and their indigenous appearance. The people in this picture appear to be having some sort of gathering or celebration. I think they might be celebrating their history because of the teepees and clothing. One woman is handing out something that looks like it is made of animal hide or bone. They look like bracelets, but I am not positive.
Paige (Reading)
In this picture, there are people handing out food, the sun is setting and it is snowy. I think that this picture is set in Alaska because of the snow. I don't think it could be one of the polar regions as there would be much more ice and people who live in the north pole always have igloos. The people in this picture look like they are a part of a tribe because of their patterned clothing. It looks cold and they are wrapping up warm and light campfires to keep warm, proving the fact that it has to be somewhere that is constantly cold. They also don't have electricity, otherwise there would be lights and the lights they have are solar powered. The campfires are lit within the t-pee tents.
Randall (Reading strat)
In this picture the sun is setting, I know this because of the colors in the background and it's getting dark. Also, there is food because someone is holding a plate and giving it to someone. and there is another group of people probably doing the same thing.
Hunter (SMS)
In this picture it looks like Eskimos who are having a family dinner. the reason I think that is because I see many people, and one of them are holding a plate with something that looks like food. I also see that is is cold because They are wearing these heavy clothes and there is snow on the ground. I see huts that maybe these people live in as well.
AnderNinja005 (Germany)
@Hunter you should name them Inuits

I think there is some sort of party happening in alaska . I think this because there is a lot of people. There is food and this looks like it is in a colder place.

Nicole (sms)
I infer these people are Native Americans because of the tents in the background and the designs on the clothes. They maybe are having a festival because of the plate the woman is holding and the poles on the ground with blue light. This also maybe morning or night because of the sky. My question is, where are they?
Ryan (SMS)
This looks like the people are celebrating in the arctic. They have special food and teepees set up so I think the celebration has to do with a Native American tribe like the inuit. They may be celebrating because of a special holiday that the inuit celebrate. If all the people are part indian, that might make sense.
sebastian (sms)
I think they're sharing food with their family members because they're giving each other food and they have their teepee next to them.
Mrs. Barrett's Group (Batavia, NY)
Kailey - I think it's a Chinese culture and they are doing some kind of celebration and one is handing out some food. I see tents, and ice. I think they are in Antarctica or Alaska. Paige - I think they are in Alaska and I think they are doing the dogsled race. I think the one girl is passing out octopus tentacles. I see there is tents in the background and I also see snow and it looks a little cold. The sky is very pretty and I think it's the sunset. Yaomy - I think they were going on a walk and they were going somewhere but they couldn't get there and they made tents. They are traveling all toghether so no one could be lost. I think it's almost night because the sky is orange and kind of pink. Mrs. Barrett - I think they are in Alaska and it looks like it might be a festival and they are showing how they used to live a long time ago. I see a fire in a tent but then they have light posts beside the path. I think the lady is handing out food they would have eaten a long time ago. The man in the corner of the picture doesn't look like he belongs there and he could be a tourist.
Mark (sms)
I think that the Eskimos are having dinner. I think that because one Eskimo is holding food and sharing with his/her dou partner.

I think these people might live here or are visiting during vacation. It looks very cold with the clothes they are wearing and the snow on the ground. They have something on a plate and it looks like they are giving it out to all of the people.
Emma (SMS)
I believe that it could be a family celebration between an Eskimo family during ether right as the sunset is almost finished or right as the sun is coming up. Also, I think it is a celebration because of all of the empty containers on the tray the woman is holding.
Abby (SMS)
I think they are celebrating something because there are a lot of people and one of the girls seems to be passing out food. It looks like this is in maybe Alaska because there is a lot of snow and the way they dress looks like how Alaskans might dress.
Payton (Milwaukee)
It looks like the sun is setting or rising. I know that because of the sky and the colors. I can also see that they are eating and they are in smaller groups.
ENG1P (STCHS)
We think this is a group of Inuit in the Canadian Arctic. We noticed the water in the background, and we think it may be taking place at sunset because there are solar lamps and they seem bright having sun to charge it during the day. We notice the two teepee tents have smoke coming out of the tops of each one and there is a fire burning outside one of them. We see one of the members of the group holding a tray of objects. We wonder if these are special objects that might be offered as a gift.
Paige (Reading)
We think that they must be in a tribe because they are all wearing the same type of clothing which is patterned. They might be setting up a camp because of the fire and tents around. There are no other towns, villages or cities nearby so they want it to be peaceful and quiet. From the sunset, we can see that it is later in the evening and they are about to have some food for the night. They look like they are well prepared because they have solar lights.
Douglas (SmS)
In this picture I see People that look like eskimos, (which are people who live in the Arctic.) There are what look like teepees. I think they are either eating breakfast or they are eating dinner getting ready to go to bed.
5PI (USA)
We think this is a picture of people gathering to celebrate or honor someone OR trading. We notice people have different clothing - so maybe some tribes are represented. We think it is taking place in Alaska because of the snow and the clothing and because of what we know about people who live in Alaska.
jangmi Gasi (Canada)
I believe that this is an Eskimo family gathering in the Artic, during a sunset.
ZA (Windsor Ontario)
These people are going on a camp and spending time with there family. I see a lot of people gathering together to have fun or celebrate something. I can see snow and a bit of fire. I also see someone giving another person food or a present.
Megan (canada)
I think they could be trying to stay warm I think this because they all have warms clothes on. they also look like there in the winter because of the snow and it looks like there's fire smoke.

this looks like it could be a gathering or a feast among the people in the village. It is clear it was taken up North also by the traditional clothing they appear to be wearing. The woman is either offering a gift to this person, or it may even be food.

In a traditional village somewhere in the Arctic Circle, natives celebrate a culturally significant event, one that entails traditional clothing and structures. Perhaps a feast day?
Grade 11 (Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
We see tipis, a tribe maybe. Two people seem to be trading, or exchanging something. It's cold, there is snow. One person is wearing different clothes, maybe an elder? It may be a kind of ritual. There is also a fire. The sun is setting. But it may also be light all the time. The man in the hoodie is dressed in a more modern way, so he may have brought battery torches. Might this be a cultural thing where people live their lives like their ancestors for a while? Thw two tents are made from different materials. One from reindeer fur and the other from a modern kind of fabric.
Kevin (Taiwan)
In this picture,I see the ground was covered by thick snow, which glowed under the majestic sunset. The weather of it was freezing and snowy.Standing on the ground were people in heavy, dark blue, woolen coat with colorful patterns. The two people near the camera were carrying a plate of traditional delicacy chatting with each other.Behind them were tents in cone shape. There were plume rising from the top of the tents. The place in this picture might was in Mongolia.Although the weather of it may hard to stand, the people in there seemed to be happy and satisfied, and the scenery of it was amazing and harmonious.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
In this picture there is a sunset in the background and snow on the ground, so I can infer that this photo was taken in a cold place in the evening. There is a teepee in the background and the people are wearing tribal prints so they might be Native American. Smoke is coming out of the teepee, so there is a probably a fire inside it. The two people in the front are holding a platter of food so they could be cooking dinner with the fire or using it to stay warm, or both. This looks like a special occasion because of all that is happening in the photo, so maybe the people are celebrating something.
Robin (Germany)
I think it‘s very cold there 🧐. The eight people wear clothes which look very warm. In the background is a nice sunset so maybe the picture is taken in the evening. The persons stands between some blue lights and tends.
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think this photo is taken in a very cold place. We noticed their clothing is heavy and they are wearing boots and covering their heads. We think they made their clothes themselves because that doesn't look like something you can buy at a store. We noticed the teepee's in the background and there is smoke coming from one and a fire that we can see from the other. We think this photo was taken either at sunrise or sunset because of how the sky looks. We think that is food that is on the plate.
林易璇 洪珮華 (松山高中)
According to the picture,we infer that there were some people preparing for their dinner at the frigid zone. It seems that the night was coming because we can see the dusky sky full of rosy clouds.Due to the heavy snow and a thick layer of snow lying on the ground, people wearing cold-proof hats, scarves and boots to prevent themselves from frost-bite.Furthermore,the tetrahedron-like tents on the ground with smoke floating from the top showed that there were something burning or cooking inside. Besides, through the navy blue coats with mysterious pattern which people in the picture wore, we can also speculate that they are aborigines who were wearing traditional clothes.
Kevin (Taiwan)
In this picture,I see the glorious sunset and blanket of snow entirely covering the ground. In addition, there are few aborigines which wearing deep blue, gingham, wool traditional costumes. Before the sunset disappear in the horizon ,people are nearby the mountain-shape tent where a plume of smoke rise, enjoying the evening scenery. In order to share their pleasure, they are chatting with each other and.Besides,a local man take a plate which is full of special dessert to share to his neighbors. Despite the fact that the harsh environment is poor in other’s eyes, these natives are satisfied the leisurely lives.
曾秉華 吳庭毅 (松山高中)
The sun is setting, tinting the sky to orange blended with purple. On the ground lies a blanket of snow glowing white. There’s some people wearing black, plaid, leather overcoats. Behind them are several triangle tents with smoke coiling up and fire flaming in them. I suppose that it is a tourist attraction because those people seem like foreign visitors, lining up to take a look at the tents. While some people dressing up traditional costume appear to be local villagers. These hospitable locals are giving indigenous delicacy to visitors. Although it is freezing, maybe the tents are used to warm up the surrounding area, serving as large radiators.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
It looks like a group of Native people celebrating the coming of the sun. In places in far north in Canada, the winter is usually completely black. This may be the first sunrise of the year. All of the people are wearing very cultural and traditional clothing that looks native to this particular region. The blue lanterns give a more spiritual and ritualistic feel to the photo. In the background, their are tepees with smoke coming out of the top. The woman in the front of the picture looks like she is carrying kindle to keep the fires, inside the tepees, going.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Uliana AOSE I didn't pay too close attention to the blue lanterns before. What do you think they symbolize/ represent?

In this picture, there are a lot of people, in deep blue traditional costumes with special patterns, chatting and exchanging some items, which looked like crooked bones. Behind them is a boundless of ice fields. At nightfall, the shine of the setting sun turned this silver world brilliant orange and red. The tents is standing on the snow with a plume of smoke. The locals go home one after the other with satisfy smiles. Maybe they will be ready to have a dinner with their families and friends in this little castle.
S. (Nowhere)
Dear @Diao I like your idea that the food could be crooked bones .I agree with you that all of the people are wearing cultural and traditional clothing which look cosy and warm. I think this could be the first sunrise of the year and maybe the peoples there celebrating this. Out of the tepees comes smoke , inside there must be a fire to warm up. But I didn’t thought they will have a dinner with their families because they don’t look very wealthy.

When the snow glows white ,flashing the light of the setting sun, people in navy coat decorating with ethnic patterns chat with each others. In front of the tent with stream of smoke flowing up ,they seems to have a party, sharing some curly meal and enjoying their good time on the snow covering ground. Also,I see some warn light glowing in the tent which I believe It is coming from the light of people’s cooking used fire in the tent.Maybe after the sunset, they will have a great dinner inside their lovely tent.

In this picture, when the sun on the horizons ,there are a few tourists wearing traditional clothes which is black, khaki, plain or check. In addition, the paisley hat woman wore is spectacular and stunning. Moreover, the two conical tents on the blanket of glowing snow also attract me. I think the interior of tents is badly warm and comfortable because dark smoke emerged continuously. One day, I can take my own picture at their by myself.
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I see in this picture what looks to be a group or colony people, most likely nomads because of their teepees. My guess is that they could be travelling somewhere and stopped here for the night to rest and eat. It also looks like they are in a very snowy and cold environment, somewhere arctic. An older woman is serving out the food, which is unfamiliar to anything I’ve eaten before, meaning it could be a special food significant to their culture. It looks like the peel of a fruit, or maybe a roll of bread or meat. Another thing I thought of is that this could be a cultural celebration, seeing as the food is unfamiliar to me and the people look happy.
Hayden Carroll (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Charlotte Saxton What the woman is handing out on the plate is one of the first things that I noticed when looking at the picture. I had a lot of different guesses, but I liked your thought of it maybe being a fruit peel. I agree that it seems like something significant to their culture. I also agree that the picture seems like it might be capturing a cultural celebration based on the food and the clothing. Whatever is going on in the picture, I can tell that those in it are enjoying it. I would also think that there's not much technology in the area other than the camera, making their gathering much more special.
蕭又誠 (台灣)
Those people are wearing navy gingham fur clothe . Under glorious sunset ,they chat with each other happily . Standing on a thick of snow ,they probably have used to the freezing temperatures ,they even seem to have totolly np any problem of with blizzard. The scene there was so amazing that the people there was so happy. Everybody were so enjoy the atmosphere.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This picture is taking place in Siberia, and appears to be towards the present day. The snowy, icy, cold, grounds fit perfectly with the description of Siberia. The people are a slightly nomadic tribe who are all gathered for what appears to be a meal. This meal is most likely dinner time, for the sun is setting, and they are eating lots of meat which is a prized thing among tribes. To me, the meat looks like rolled up bacon (yummy), which is being served by one of the tribes eldest members. This meat, going along with typical tribal patriarchy standards, was probably hunted by one of the men. It may possibly of been saved from a warmer time for now. The clothing on the people looks to be on the newer side, and not like poorly made like the olden days. There are also huts, which are shaped like Tee pees, in the background. These are probably their living headquarters as there is smoke blowing out the top of one of them, suggesting there is a fire inside.
Arianna B. (Milwaukee)
This looks like Alaska somewhere cold. I see snow, people, and they are wearing coats and layers of clothes trying to stay warm. The sun is setting up, these people can be Indians because of certain color, and the way they are dressed, and how the tent is up.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Arianna B. I agree this is somewhere cold, possibly Alaska, because of all the snow and the thick coats the people are wearing. Do you think the patterns on their coats mean anything?
Gianna F (LCMS)
3/9/20 In this picture it looks like they are in the Antarctic. I know this because they are wearing big heavy coats and there is deep snow below them. In this picture there are huts where the people are living in the picture. I know this because they are behind the people in the front of the picture and there is fire on top of one of them. In the picture the lady is giving squid on a plate to the man. I know this because she has a plate with food on it and it’s almost in the man's hands. Based on the evidence this photo was taken in the Antarctic near the 1800’s.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
I believe that this is a photo of a tribal festival. The people in the photo are gathered together around tents, some lit up with pits of fire. the shorter woman is handing out food for the other women to take and enjoy. In the climate we see in the background, these people live in a cold, harsh environment and probably don't want to spend too much time outside, especially when the sun goes down. Also, food seems to be a scarce resource you should hold onto, so the women giving the other women a tray of good food signals that this is some sort of festival where people share what food they can. This photo is recent because of the color in it and the clarity of the sunset in the background.
Mrs. Thompson's English II Classes (Bennettsville, SC)
@Colleen AOSE This is the first inference that I have read so far. The rest are simply descriptions of what is in the picture. Congratulations.
Ava C (LCMS)
This picture takes place somewhere very cold. I know this because a thick blanket of snow is covering the ground and the people in the picture are wearing very heavy coats with their hoods up. You can also see smoke coming out of their huts, which indicates that they contain a fire. The people in the photo may be using the cold climate as a place for some type of cultural gathering. This can be concluded because most people in the photo are wearing a coat with similar designs to each other. Additionally, there are two triangular huts in the background for shelter. There isn’t any other reason that huts like this would be up in the middle of such a frigid place; they would only be there for something cultural. At this cultural gathering, trading of items occurs. This is evident because one woman in the front is handing another woman a plate of some sort of white, swirled shells. In conclusion, this photo takes place at a cultural gathering somewhere very cold where trading occurs.
Brayden P. (LCMS)
3/9/20 In this picture, there is a flat plain of land covered with snow. The people in the picture are wearing long, fluffy clothes and gloves. These people appear to be in an area that is usually very cold and snowy, such as Alaska. The only shelter are teepees. There are fires by the teepees which would help to keep them warm in this frigid climate. There is a pink sky in the background, which is the color the sky is during sunrise or sunset. Because the people are up and around, I would guess that it is sunset. The people in the front of the picture could be sharing or trading material with each other to feed the fires to keep them lit. The one face that I can see clearly in the photo looks welcoming, making me think that this is a community. In conclusion, there are people who are visiting or living in Alaska who are sharing material to keep their fires lit. They have these fires because it is especially cold during sunset.
Ricardo M (LCMS)
This picture takes place in a cold area. I know this because lots of snow and a few icebergs can be seen in the background. Another piece of evidence I noticed is that these people are spending some time in this cold, icy are. Evidence of this shown through the fire burning in the back, as well as the tents that can be seen. The final piece of evidence is that these people may be a part of a tribe or a group of some sort. Evidence of this is shown through the type of clothes these people are wearing. Instead of wearing normal winter clothes, they are wearing clothes with certain patters. IN conclusion, this picture takes place in an icy area where a tribe/ or a group of people are spending time in this area.
Ella aose (New Jersey)
In this picture, there is a group of seemingly Inuit people camping for the night and settling down for the night. There are about five people in the back, possibly discussing directions or telling people where they will be going next. On that note, this could be a tour of some kind. The three people in the front are sharing some kind of food, maybe some kind of meat, for dinner. The picture takes place in somewhere cold and incredibly rural, like Alaska or Russia. However, I'm assuming this takes place in the Americas because of the Teepees and their overall face shape.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This picture was definitely taken in a cold place due to the thick snow and the heavy clothing the people are wearing. This could have been taken in the Artic because of the lighting resembling the Artic lights. This could be an underdeveloped or not have much modern technology society, due to the tents they have set up. This could also be tribal community. I can tell that this picture was taken fairly recently due to the blue laterns and the camera quality being very clear. I believe that the women had food on her plater and is serving it to all the people in this picture.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
In this picture, there are people dressed for cold weather. You can see the snow on the ground, and based on the depth of the footprints, it looks like there's about a foot of snow. The people have on heavy, thick coats, gloves, and hoods/head coverings. in the background, you can see teepees with smoke coming out of the top, which leads me to believe that there are fires inside, most likely for cooking and warmth. I think this picture was taken in Antarctica because the people, based on their clothing, look like eskimos, and the amount of snow and wide open space looks like Antarctica. It could also be taken in a place like Alaska. This must have been taken within a decade because you can see technological electric-looking lights sticking up from the ground.
Patua2 (Argentina)
In this picture, I can see a very cold weather and people wearing warm clother. They don't look as if they are cold. Instead, they may be enjoying the time with other people, and it looks like they are about to eat something, like a roll meat. Maybe some of them are visitors, and the locals are sharing their food with them. The place could be an isolated place like Antartida or somewhere alike. You can see the big, white, open space in the image and there is nobody else. The lights next to the group of people at the back is strange, because I can't see any wire connected. It could be produce by solar light, I don't know. And the houses at the back don't look like places for living. I suppose they are only for staying the night, disarm it and move to another place.
Pablo (Miami, Fl)
This picture represents maybe a Canadian tribe, we can say this because the people have almond-shaped eyes and also because of the characteristic clothes with the geometrical pattern in the sleeves of the jacket. In the picture we can see that the tribe is having a celebration or a meeting because there is a group of people at the back of the picture and the two women in the front are holding food, this food could be raw fish or dry fish because is the only type of protein that you can find in such an isolated place. Because the type of clothes and the teepees, we can assume that they are Inuits, this tribal group is well known as nomadic people, this means that they change location really often depending on the weather and the food.
Annelisse (AOSE)
This picture was taken around a society that is not very developed in technology. Maybe they use outdated or alternate methods as their way of living. For example, the houses they live in are tipis. Clearly, they live in a very cold area, due to the thick snow. It is obvious this snow is not just a one time occurrence, because the clothes everyone is wearing are heavy winter coats. This shows they are prepared for this weather. It looks like there are contained fires burning in the tipis, for warmth and to make food. This could take place in somewhere cold like Siberia. It must be fairly recent because the camera quality is very clear.
Mrs. Schlaff's 6th Hour (Michigan)
We believe that this is a presentation about tribal life done by a northern Canadian tribe. There appears to be a group of people in the background viewing and listening to what is happening in the foreground. It doesn’t appear to us that the group is wearing the same traditional clothing as the people in the front of the picture. This makes us think that this is some kind of presentation. In addition, the posts with blue lights look like an entrance, perhaps to a presentation or display. The lights look fluorescent or LED. We wouldn’t expect to normally see this type of lighting in this setting. Again, this makes us think that this is not a traditional encampment. The fur and animal skin clothing make us think that this is a tribe wearing traditional clothing for the presentation. In addition, there are no modernized buildings. Instead we see teepees which are traditional temporary tribal housing. Finally, we noticed that the landscape appears bare, snowy, untouched and flat. This reminds us of the
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Mrs. Schlaff's 6th Hour That's interesting that you would think this is all just a presentation about a tribe. I see that making sense because of the way they are all standing around and how the woman is passing out the food, that could maybe just be fake if for a presentation.
Sami A. (LCMS)
First of all, this picture takes place in a small, present-day arctic town. I know this because the picture is obviously in color and they appear to have lights in the background. Secondly, these people live in a small town like this because it is part of their culture. I know this because some cultures live in the arctic in small teepees. Finally, the people in this picture are eating a meal. I know this because the woman in the front of the picture is holding a large plate that has some sort of food on it and she is serving it to the people in her community. There also appears to be a fire in the background where they are cooking the food. In conclusion, this is a picture of people that are eating their meal in their small, arctic community.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
The people in this picture appear to be very cold. They have on warm clothing and coats. I also see fire with smoke in the background. The lady holding the tray seems to be handing out something that may be food. There is also snow on the ground. Because it is cold, it is most likely in the north. It could be in Russia, Canada, or another place similar to those where it is cold. It is probably doing the modern time because of their clothes, and there are 2 blue lanterns with light bulbs in the background.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@KatieD AOSE Do you think that the people are apart of a tribe together, or or just meeting up for a casual get together?
Mrs. Schlaff's 4th Hour (Michigan)
We believe that this is a picture of a tribal family gathering in northern Asia, possibly Siberia. The clothing that the people are wearing has intricate designs on it. It reminds us of traditional tribal wear. We also noticed teepees, and we know that they are traditional tribal housing. We noticed that the people are of different generations and gathered together in a way that makes us think that they know one another. For this reason, we think this a family gathering. Furthermore, we noticed that the land is snowy and flat and the people are wearing warm clothing. This makes us think that this picture was taken somewhere in the north, possibly northern Asia, possibly Siberia.
Lynn Manna (Brooklyn, NY)
Class 3-425 thinks that this scene is in a cold place, maybe Alaska or Greenland, or Siberia. I looked like a sunset or sunrise. Even though there were tents and old fashioned clothing, we think it took place in modern times because we saw lanterns that looked like ones you would find today. We realized it couldn't be from a long time ago because the photo was in color. We noticed that there was a woman with a tray. Maybe it was bracelets, or something round made from bones. We think they might be trading. Maybe they are nomadic, we think this because we saw people talking to each other as if they were just meeting. Also, they may need to move their homes to travel to find food. The people looked like native people because of their clothing and homes.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Lynn Manna Why do you think they have gathered? Is this a celebration? The woman in the front looks like she is carrying something more along the lines of kindle for a fire. The kindle could be for the fire in the teepees. I agree that these people could be nomadic; teepees are often associated with a nomadic or semi-nomadic group of people. You suggested that this is taking place somewhere further north, is this a celebration of the first light? It is pitch black in the winter far north, so this could be the first sunrise of the year.
Kevin T. (LCMS)
This takes place somewhere up north probably in Greenland. You can tell this because A. there is lots of snow so that makes it someplace cold. Also there are no buildings just teepee. This eliminates any populated area. Also these people are natives. You can tell this because again there are no formal houses and their clothing looks very decorative and religious. This picture was taken at sunrise. You can tell this because in the background you see a pink sky. This is the effect of a rising sun. And the picture is bright not dark. If it was at sunset it would be darker. This is a picture of native people taken up north during sunrise.
IJD (ottawa ontario)
The primary assumption is they may be native judging by there tradition buildings and clothes. There not kids, there no commercial builds or any building around for that matter. The metal plater holds maybe birch bark or maybe ect.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@IJD What do you think these people would be using this birch bark for?
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
This picture looks to be taken in someplace like Alaska. The teepees in the back indicate this along with the smoke coming out of one. A bunch of people are gathered around one area. They could be drilling a hole in the ice and fishing. The area is lit by electronic torches so this society can't be entirely non-modern. The clothes they are wearing and the scarves a lady has on in the picture also indicate modern-day influences. One person in the front is offering another bracelet of some sort from a tray full of them. These bracelets could be made out of bone for some decoration. These people might just be there to try to experience life the way their ancestors did.
Ms. Bennard's Class (Ontario)
In this picture our class sees Teepees, snow, a setting sun, and Indigenous Peoples. Our class thinks this might be somewhere in Northern Canada, Nepal, or Russia. We think that the woman is trading with the man or that they are talking about what they are going to do with what's on the plate. Some ideas we have for what's on the plate are bones, cups, or wood.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Ms. Bennard's Class I had not thought of what the woman had was something she was trading. This is a very unique idea and something I did not think of before.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
What a great day's work in looking, finding and noting evidence, and sharing! In today's compelling image we've speculated on location - Greenland, Siberia, Alaska, Antarctica, Mongolia - and the nature of the gathering of what appear to be native peoples - trading, celebration, a sacred or religious context? And, so much more; investigating the who, what, why, where, and when has brought forth myriad insightful observations, comments, and questions. Awesome job, and thanks to all. Signing off for now....but please, keep the comments coming. Don't forget to check back Thursday afternoon to catch the "reveal" and learn more about this image. See you next Monday!
joey (Canterbury.h.s)
In this picture I see native people getting bark for the fires inside the tipis and talking amongst themselves. The sky is pink and the sun is going down. It Looks cold but they are dressed warmly in their native clothing.
Ms. Thomas (Great Falls,, MT)
We think the people are Inuits from Alaska. The live in tipees and might possibly be celebrating a hunt. The weather is cold and there is snow on the ground. The people are dressed warm in colorful coats and mittens. They are wearing furry boots. There are fires in the tipees. It looks like the sun is getting ready to set.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Ms. Thomas Hi Ms. Thomas! I was wondering why you thought that they are celebrating a hunt. I did not see anything hunting related in this picture and was just curious. Thank you!
Mrs. Adamsky's 8th grade (Upper Arlington OH)
We think that Eskimos are trading food or bracelets. It looks like they are lined up waiting to give something to the lady with the red detail on her coat. It also appears to be a thriving arctic society. We think that because there are so many fine details on their garments.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Mrs. Adamsky's 8th grade Do you think the woman is possibly the head of the tribe?
Jm (Virginia)
Seems like they could be trading a craft or food of tradition.
jacob alex (ottawa ontario)
It looks like some sort of trade or meeting the nationality looks to me to be native maybe somewhere up in Nunavut or up north the women looks to be giving them some tree bark as madey a meeting gift the place also looks to be a place of common ground madey a spot in between both tribes mabey to celebrate some sort of special time going on in they life .
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@jacob alex Have you considered that this could be a celebration of some sort? The clothing looks on the fancier side; this could be used during ritualistic celebrations. The fire going in the teepees could be part of this celebration and the woman is carrying kindle to keep the fire going all night/day. Could this be the celebration of the first light in the north?
A (Carver)
This picture to me looks like they are having some sort of spiritual gathering of some sort. It reminds me of how in church they give a communion where people line up to receive the wafer.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@A What makes you think the exchange between these people is "spiritual"?
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This picture was, obviously, taken in a cold area where there isn't much plant life, more of just an open landscape. It could take place somewhere in Alaska, Siberia, or anywhere it snows. It seems that the people pictured could be nomadic, because tepees are homes made for mobility. The native people, or people in ornate cloth clothing and living in the tepees seem to be trading with the other people, who could be from a different tribe or area. Their technology is very different from ours because they don't use it as much, and their main heat and light source is fire, but there are also bluish lanterns that the nomadic people probably made. What's on the tray could either be food or a material that they are trading. If it is food, they are probably not trading, and maybe are from the same tribe. The sky is also filled with beautiful colors, and that might be a rare phenomenon, which is what they could be celebrating.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture I see many men and women in heavy coats in a very cold region. I believe that they could be inuits. I believe this because they appear to be in a tundra, arctic region. In the background there seems to be tepees. In the forefront, of the image is two people who could be trading things. The woman is trying to trade what looks likes bracelets to another person who seems interested.
Ms. Kalmes Reading (Marlboro)
These people look like they are camping out somewhere cold. It looks like they have some kind of rings on the plate, octopus? Elephant tusks? There are tepees or wigwams there. Is this where they live? Where are they? Is it a celebration? Are they Native Americans? We noticed tribal markings on their tepees and jackets.
sydney johnson (milwaukee)
I believe this is a picture of Mongolia people maybe from east Asia or the pacific islands they are reunited to celebrated something or just to come to get together but in this picture, it's them helping one another in the cold I assumed this by the way they are gathered together they are feeding one another and by the tents and face expression makes me believe there not sad to be there also notice a beautiful background makes me think they're here because of it
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@sydney johnson I agree that it is very cold where these people are. It is most likely in Asia somewhere, but it would have to be northern Asia. I also agree that the people do not look sad or worried.
Annelisse (AOSE)
@sydney johnson I never thought about their emotions, but you're right, they don'y look sad to be in this cold as some people would. It must be their natural way of life. They might even be drawn to the snow. or the beautiful background, like you said.
ELA (MA)
We have a few ideas: -This takes place in Alaska or Iceland because of the tepees and the way they are dressed. The woman is giving the man a plate of fish. -They are camping, it is the morning. They live in a tepee. I see smoke coming out of the tepee. -The man and the woman are trading food for clothes. This takes place in Alaska, because of the way they are dressed and the tepees. -They are trading clothing. -They are camping in Antarctica.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think that people in Alaska, Antarctica, or somewhere else cold, are celebrating some event, possibly like daylight savings (symbolizing that spring is near) or even winter solstice. Since the daylight savings was quite recent, this picture could be related to this event. I think that this is a celebration because there is a tray with food being passed around, and everyone seems to be gathered around. In addition, I assume that this picture is taken somewhere cold because of the layers of outfits and the snow.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
The climate looks very cold, leading me to believe that this could be in Alaska, Mongolia, or somewhere in Siberia. The designs of their clothes and the architecture of the structure in the background lead me to believe there is some sort of tribe settled in this area. The sunset (or sunrise) with the lights could signal some sort of seasonal event that these people do, and the food the person has on the plate could be traditional or have cultural significance.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
In this picture it looks like it is extremely cold, maybe taken in Alaska or another very cold country like Siberia. It seems like the people in the picture live in the cold, as there is a tee-pea behind them, with steam coming out of the top, so it must be heated in the tee-pea as well. I think maybe they are part of some old tribe who lives in this cold land as they are weary elaborate coats of some kind to keep warm and that maybe they are celebrating something as they are all gathered together, with snacks present. Also the celebration might set to happen when the sunsets or rise as the sky is so vibrant and beautiful.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Ethan T, @madison, and @Max Mullady (and many more) note the sharing of food and festive atmosphere that suggests a celebration and/or cultural gathering. Do you agree? Looking closely, what more can you find to substantiate this theory?
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
PHO 101 This looks like Alaska, Mongolia or northern Canada-somewhere cold (snow). Either sunrise or sunset. Maybe a solstice celebration. There is tipi (we learned that there are 3 different spellings: tipi, teepee, tepee). There are solar lights stuck in the ground. There are fires in the teepees because of the smoke coming out of the top. On the plate-looks like food or rawhide, maybe fatty like whale blubber? They are wearing indigenous clothing.
Annelisse (AOSE)
@Photo class Villa Maria College I never thought of this as a celebration, but I understand how it would be, since people are exchanging things on plates and even some of the coats look fancy, Winter solstice is a great idea and it would also describe the beautiful sunset (maybe sunrise) in the background.

@Mrs. Miller's 3rd grade We are in the third grade as well! I agree that they may be selling teeth to make jewelry.
Tanzeela R (LCMS)
This picture is taking place in a cold area such as Antarctica or Alaska. I know this because there are 8 people in this image all wearing heavy coats, gloves, scarves, hats etc. There is also lots of snow on the ground. I think in this picture a woman is giving out food to all the people around her. I know this because she is holding a plate with something on it and the person is taking some. This picture is taking place in the evening. This is because I can see that the sun is setting and there is a purple and pink gradient in the sky. That is whyI think this is taking place in a cold climate, in the evening, while a woman is passing around food to everyone.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Tanzeela R I really like all of your details. However, do you think that maybe this picture is taken of a celebration in this community? Maybe this is a normal process for these people, or perhaps, it is a cultural celebration?

I see a teepee, a sunset, and people. I think this is happening in the great plains or indianna because I learned this in 4th grade.

i see teepees and people dressed in very warm culture clothes and a person holding a plate of some sort and its very cold so probaly in alaska
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@maddie Why Alaska? There are many other places in the world that are cold too.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@maddie I also noticed how the people are dressed in warm clothing. The plate most likely has some sort of food on it. Where else could this be besides Alaska?
Daniel Hagar (New Hampshire)
I see people, snow, tee pees and lights. I don't know where this is it might be Alaska because it looks very very cold and the way the people are dressed i think this is a festival because there are a lot of people walking around and one person looks to be holding food or something
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Daniel Hagar I agree this seems to be a very cold area, possibly Alaska. I had not considered that this was a festival before, but that would make sense for why they appear to be trading.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Daniel Hagar I agree with your interpretation. This picture must be of some festival or important celebration, because everyone seems to be gathering around, and there is a large platter of food. Maybe this is a celebration unique to these people, or maybe it is a celebration that is really important to them, that other people in other areas of the world do not emphasize.
Devan (newport NewHampshire)
I think these are natives in antartica because there alot of snow and there dresed all warm. I see teepees in the back ground and alot of snow on the ground. It looks like there eating something on the tray.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Devan What makes you think Antarctica and not some other cold place?
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think what’s happening in this picture is that natives of a cold place like maybe Alaska are having some kind of festival. They seem to be dishing out something that I assume is food. It may be normal food there or it could be for celebration.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Emma AOSE I agree, I think that the people are taking part in some celebration or festival as well!
Emmanuel (South Korea)
Whats going on in this picture? This is based on a traditional ceremony and there is 9 adults and 1 lady giving everyone a sort of item. The background has a sundown theme and has TI-PI's. Also at first glance I think of Alaska and Antartica. I think this was recent because I can see solor power things you put in the ground and also the camera quality is clear and no black and white. I think im right because if im not imma be real mad. Questions Me Have What is on the plate? What Region dey in? What are da peps doing? Is dis some type of traditional ceremony? I have so much more of de questions to ask
Elaria (NH)

I see something on a plate that someone is holding. Maybe bones. It is in someplace cold. Could be in Siberia, because of all the snow, and there are tents in the background. I know that it is not, but what the person is holding looks like soap shavings. They are in a remote location. It is sunset and getting close to dark. Maybe because it is getting dark, what is on the plate could be dinner. Looking at their style of dress, they seem like native people.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Eliseo's 6-8th gr Photo Class I agree that it looks like bones on the tray, and that the people seem like nomads and natives to this part of the land based on how they dress. Do you think it could be anywhere else other than Siberia?
Zoe.O COS (Ohio)
I am lead t believe that he people in this picture are Eskimos that live far north in tepees I think this because their apparel is that that is worn by the Eskimos in many of the pictures and traditional paintings. I think that there is a festival are celebration occuring. I think this because there is an abundance of food in the picture.
Patrick COS (Cleveland, Ohio)
I think that this picture takes place in Antarctica, Alaska, or Greenland. All of the people are dressed like it is really cold out (obviously it is in Antarctica, Alaska, or Greenland) it might be winter there (duh 😒). The two people in the front look like they are trading some thing that looks like meat in a weird shape, or weird bracelets. It also looks like it is night time and they are ready for bed A question I have is, What are they trading?
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Patrick COS I think maybe they aren't trading as the people ready to get whatever is on the plate, don't have anything to trade, so maybe they are eating some dish native to their culture.
Patrick COS (Cleveland, Ohio)

VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Patrick COS, what do you see, what evidence do you find that makes you think they are trading?
Charlie COS (Cleveland, Ohio)
I believe that this picture is of a trading post in the Greenland snowy flats. I say this because the ethnicity of the peoples faces looks to be Greenland or dutch. I know that this area is somewhere very close to one of the poles because of the endless snow, what looks to be the Arctic ocean, the teepees, and their parkas. So in conclusion I believe these people are located in a Greenland trading post located near the North Pole. Things I notice 1.There are three fires going, one outside, and one inside each tent.(Smoke is coming out of the tents) 2. There are lanterns and the snow seems to go on forever till a cold ocean appears. QUESTIONS Where are these people located? WHATS GOING ON IN THIS PICTURE??????
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Charlie COS, Like you, many speculate the location here is Greenland or northern Alaska. What makes you think the ethnicity of these people is Dutch?
RNA (COS)
I think that in this picture this might be some sort of Northern tribe maybe Alaska? I see a hut with smoke coming out of it and people all dressed up they may have hunted animals on this island to get these clothes. Also two people appear to be trading something the thing the both holding is curly and white with a tint of a fleshy light pink. One of the people holding it you can't see their face the other looks happy to be holding it also their are some people in the background analyzing another hut in the background, and their is a beautiful sunset or sunrise in the background. Still I wonder What are the two people holding? Where is this taking place? When is this taking place?
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@RNA I agree that this could be taking place in Alaska. I also do think that the two people in the forefront of the picture could be from two different tribes. This would make sense for why the other person in the picture seems happy to receive whatever the women is trading, it could possibly not be common in their tribe.
Max Mullady (Cleveland, Ohio)
In this picture I think a cultural gathering is taking place. Judging by the color of the sky I think that this place is far up in the northern hemisphere. Also the people there have patterns on their clothes as well as traditional Native American houses. This suggests the Idea of a group gathering maybe relating to their culture or tradition such as a festival. Also suggesting the idea of a gathering is the plate of curly material. This could mean that people are selling or giving these items as a gift or tradition. Some questions I have is: Who are these people? Where are they from? Where are they? Why are they there?
Calvin D. (Cleveland Heights, OH)
I believe that this is some sort of tribal festivity for Greenlandic Inuit who are native to Greenland. I suspect that they are celebrating the worm moon that is coming out in the sky over the next three days. This is a common native american tradition and conception of the worm moon allowing the soil to get softer so that worms can start burrowing into the ground. It seems to me that the things on the plate on the bottom right of the image are worms that they will allow to burrow into the ground, or maybe they are wristbands. You can tell that this is from a modern standpoint because of the lights in the pathway, as well as the picture quality. Some questions I have are: What are the things on the plate, why do those people in the back of the picture look like the are waiting, what are they waiting for?
Ella aose (New Jersey)
@Calvin D. Woah, that's a lot of detail! To answer one of your questions, I think that the person is offering/giving them meat of some kind because meat usually helps build fat and fat helps keep body heat in.
Victor COS (COS)
What I Think is going on in the Picture, In this picture I think there is a community, with people surviving in tepee's. I think this picture was either taken in Alaska or somewhere near the northern hemisphere. As seen in the background of the photo, there seems to be some sort of gathering. I also see a woman passing out some sort of good, though I cannot make out exactly if the good is fabric or food. Why I Say This, - I think this picture was taken in a very cold and snowy environment making me believe the picture wasn't taken in any area located near the equator, but near the poles. - I think this picture was taken of a community because of the multiple tepee's and "community" gathering in the background - I also think the woman is passing out some sort of good because she seems to be negotiating with another woman, and passing the good out. Questions I Have, - Where are they? - What is being passed out by the women? - Why are people gathering in the background?
Jane COS (Cleveland, OH)
I think that this is some sort of tribal gathering. I say this because of the clothes that they are wearing and the tipi’s in the background. I think this is taking place in the northern hemisphere or at the poles because of the weather around them. The people in this photo are wearing warm clothes and gloves, hence the weather. The people seem to be talking in groups and sharing/trading goods. In the middle of the photo there is a woman holding a plate of either food, soap, or fabric. She is holding it out to a man observing it. Other things that I noticed are the small fires by each tipi, the lanterns by the big group of people, and that the man in the left bottom corner is holding a loaf of bread. In the background it looks like there is an ocean. This could mean that the people are standing on thick ice covered with snow. My final questions are: Where is this? What culture is this? Are the people trading? Do they live there?
Alexis W. (COS)
After taking a close look at this picture I have a guess about what it is. I think in this picture a woman went out to a foreign land to give out wristbands and take care of warriors. I think this because right in the front there's a woman and when I looked closer t looked to me that there are wristbands on the platter. I think the other people in the photo are warriors because in the back right next to the people on the ground those little sticks look like lanterns. I also think that if those are warriors some of the tents are for the people to sleep in while others are for weapons to fight. I also noticed that there is snow on the ground, therefore telling me that it's winter wherever they are. I think the time of day is either late evening or early dawn. I also can see that there is smoke coming out of one of the tents in the back so i think that the people may have put a torch on top in order to keep light, but blew out the torch. I also think they could be being taken care of by the woman. I think this because they look cold and the lady looks warm nd looks like she's providing care. Some questions I have are: Where are they? Are those people warriors? What nationality are they? What is the lady doing? What is on the platter? What are those lights? What is that smoke coming out of the tents? What's in the tents? What time of day is it? Do they live there? If they don't live there why are they out there? Is that lady taking care of them? What's going on in this picture?
Calvin D. (Cleveland Heights, OH)
@Alexis W. This is very detailed!

Whats going on in this picture? In this picture I see about 8-9 adults on a snow covered landscape standing in from of various tepees that from the smoke billowing out of them, I presume have fires. The sun has already set and their is a nice purple to pink gradient sunset. The main focus in the picture is an older woman hold a plate of some kind of food and presumably offering it to the man in front of her. All of the people I see in this photo are displayed in very heavy clothing with various prints and designs. They are all wearing hoods, scarves, and mittens because of the snow and low temperatures. In the background their is a group of 6 adults talking amongst themselves. Then on the left of the picture their is a man who is hold some sort of wooden material that might be a snowshoe or some kind of weapon. What I think is going on in this picture is that this tribe or group of people are living on either one of the poles or a land with much snow and a cold climate. This woman is offering some sort of food to a man in her tribe, other members of her tribe are talking to each other about something, maybe a plan or idea of some sort. And another man in her tribe is carrying something to or from a place. The sun is setting so they are presumably heading to bed soon. Other things I notice are: - 2 lantern type poles in the ground - some sort of lake or body of water in the background Questions I have: -What is on the plate? -Where are these people? -What are they doing here?
cameron beaton (Windsor Canada)
i think this is of a native person in the north having a visitor try their food or handing them some sort of material to possibly make a tool or some sort of clothing item
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@cameron beaton that’s really interesting! What makes you think that the other person is a visitor rather than a native as well?
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@cameron beaton A visitor? A tool? The tool could be food, and the person could be of the native people.
Ethan COS (Cleveland,Ohio)
This image shows what I think is a tribe in Alaska. I think this because I see all the people wearing what looks to be tribal clothes. It must be a ceremony because of the plate or bowl with what seems to be food. I wonder what is on the plate, where are they, and what are they doing.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Ethan COS interesting! What else makes you think it’s a ceremony? What if that plate with food is normal for their every day eating?
Della D (COS, OH)
What I think is happening in this picture is that there is a Alaskan tribe, in which there are many people. I think this because the people look Alaskan, and it looks very snowy and cold. Some things that I notice are: there are two torches, a person holding a tray of something, and the picture looks right after sunset. Some questions I have are: what is on the tray, where is it, and what is the blue stuff in the torches?
Caleb L. Bartlett (Cleveland Heights, OH)
I believe that this picture was taken during a ceremony somewhere around the poles. the reson i beleve that this picture was taken around the poles is because this place looks like it is in constant winter. the people are wearing warm jackets so they dont freeze. i belive this is a festuval because of the people gathered in the cold. I notice that the woman in the middle is handing out what i belive to be food.
Kaitlin B (LCMS)
The people in this picture are Eskimos. I know this because of their distinct facial features, such as their small eyes and their medium skin tone. Additionally, they are in extremely cold climates and are wearing parkas along with other accessories required for the dangerously low temperatures. The Eskimos in this photo are having a get-together. I can infer this because they are all standing in a huddle mingling aside from a few in a smaller group. Additionally, the person closer to the font is offering food or bones on a tray to the other. The Eskimos in this photo are camping. I can infer this because there are two tents in the background. Additionally, there are lantern posts and what seems to be a cave with light coming from it. Based on this evidence, the people in this photo are Eskimos who are having a get together at a campsite.
MollyD (communion of saints school)
In this picture they are at some kind of gathering or event and it looks like they are handing out fabric. I can see a tent in the background to maybe there is more fabric in there. some questions i have -whats in the tent -what are the people doing - where are they
Gabe COS (Cleveland,OH)
Because of the good camera quality, I can infer that this photo was taken recently. It looks to take place in a native american settlement in the arctic. The way they are leisuraly gathered and are passing around dishes of food tells me that this is more of a holiday celebration than a formal meeting.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Gabe COS Hi! I agree with you that they are in the midst of a holiday celebration of a formal meeting, but one question to think about is that if they are in the arctic, are they really Native Americans, seeing that America is not in the Arctic. If they are not Native Americans, who could they be?
Brady F (Cleveland Heights, OH)
In this week's picture, there seems to be a group of native people having some kind of a cultural festival. The festival seems to be The Festival of the Seals, a celebrated festival in the polar regions. The people look like Eskimos. Eskimo clothing is typically dull and has very bland patterns. The women in the picture look to be wearing more vibrant colors, indicating the Eskimo culture. Eskimos were like the Native Americans of the area. I inferred that these people are natives because the housing looks like a teepee tent. The part of the region the people are in looks to be a reservation for the natives. Back to the thought of, "The people must be celebrating a festival," the people seem to be passing around and eating seal blubber. Seal blubber is actually a typical food in the area, where seals are common. Aside from this response, I have a few QUESTIONS... 1. Are the people actually Eskimo? 2. What region are they in? 3. What are the people passing around and eating? 4. Wouldn't Eskimo tribes live in IGLOOS? Not Teepees?
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Brady F, You've presented a new inquiry that leads us all to wonder, "Wouldn't Eskimo tribes live in IGLOOS? Not Teepees?" Thanks for this observation! W Keep looking..../ what more can you find?
R.J. (COS)
It looks like an eskemo camp in a northern place. They seem to be performing a ritual that involves food. It might a sacred gods food. it probably involves meat because most indeginous people eat meat. Questions what is the food( does it taste good)? is the food sacred or used for religious purpouses? what are the people in the backround doing? what is with the special clothing on th person who is handing out food? is she maybe a village elder?
Roberto (North Korea)
In this photo I see a tribe or relatives coming together to celebrate their ancestors who probably lived in that spot and want to throw a traditional ceremony. This is my theory and observation and I hope you don't disagree because I really hope I'm right. Questions: Where are they? Whats the point of those shells? Why are they in Ti-pi?
Christyn (Communion of Saints School)
What's going on in this picture? I think the picture shows a lot of natives gathering around to eat for a celebration. A native is a person who has always lived in a local resident. The reason why I think that the people shown are natives is because mostly of their surroundings. For example natives used tee pees and also dressed similar clothes to the people that are shown in the picture. The questions that I have to ask are....... - What kind of food is the lady holding? - Who are these people truly? - Where are they?
Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio)
I think the lady is giving the other person food or some kind of material. I say this because she is holding a plate in front of her and holding her hand out with the material in her hand. I see other people in the background and tents with a fire next to them. I think this is a native american tribe living on either the north pole or he south pole. I say this because it looks extremely cold and there is snow on the ground. I can also find that it is either sunrise or sunset because of the position of the sun in this picture. I can find that there are blue lights next to the group of people talking over by the tents. Some questions I have include: What is that material she is holding? Where are they? Are they native Americans? What are those people talking about? Is it sunrise or sunset?
peter COS (ohio)
1. I think that this is a camp in a region with high latitude, with fabric being given to people for likely heat or bandage purposes. 2. I think this because the area looks like a cold, barren desert, and the residents live in tents similar to native american tents, only these tents have more thick animal hide for insulation. The clothing that the residents are wearing is evidently designed for very cold weather, weather that would be present in a region with high latitude. 3. Some things I also notice are the artificial lights in the left side of the image, suggesting that the people in the seemingly primitive region have some access to technology. There is light that may be artificial on the right, but it looks to me like firelight. I think this because the tent with the light emitting from it is also emitting smoke, which is from the fire.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@peter COS, You've identified the artificial lights on the left side of the picture, evidence of access to technology. What more can you find? And, what do you see that makes you think it is fabric being offered? Excellent investigations! Keep looking. Keep sharing.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@peter COS Why do you think that the objects in the picture are fabric?
Meredith COS (Ohio)
What I think is going on in the picture is that the person holding the dish with what looks like food or some sort of accessory to a woman for some sort of event or small ceremony. I think this because there is small group of people in the background. They appear like they are waiting for something. Some questions I have are: -where is this? -what are they doing? -what is on the platter/dish?
Eva P. COS (Cleveland Heights, OH)
I think this picture takes place in a cold part of the world by the snow in the picture and the warm clothing the people are wearing. I also think that the people in the picture are eskimos by the patterns on their clothing and the tents in the back ground. In the picture you can see a women giving a young man something on the plate she is holding. Maybe a type of food? My questions are: What is on the plate? Where is this picture located?
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
Thanks to all of you for your thoughtfulness and insight! Location is something that we continue to revisit. Many are thinking about location being in the northern hemisphere. @Sam M and @Ethan T speculate the location may be Greenland, while Mrs. Schlaff's 1st Hour more broadly observes the location being, "somewhere in a northern climate". Do others agree or disagree with these assertions? What more can you find?
Dylan (Ontario)
Seems like some sort of indigenous gathering. Food is being handed out at what could be a village or camp. It looks very cold there.
Dylan Reed (Canada, ON)
This is a local camp in Yukon. They are supporting each other by giving out fabric. It might be Yukon judging off of the environment and attire they are wearing.
madison (ontario)
1. some sort of cultural gathering 2. People are gathering together in some of their cultural clothes and exchanging things 3. They seem to be at a village
CJ (canada)
The picture was taken somewhere cold and it looks like they are indigenous groups.
Chastity (canada)
the people in this photo are somewhere cold and they have tipis
Bailey's Grade 6s (Toronto, Canada)
We believe it is sunset or sunrise because we can see the colours over the horizon. These are indigenous groups living somewhere very cold in the winter. We know this because of the way they are bundled up, the snow surrounding them and the fires they have going.
Ethan T (LCMS)
The people in this photo are eskimos. I can infer this because they appear to be wearing clothes that resemble that of eskimos (bigger coats and warmer clothes). There are also teepees in the background that also prove they are eskimos. Additionally the picture is taken in Greenland. I can conclude this because the eskimos are typically found in colder environments. Furthermore, there is snow in the background, which there is lots of in greenland. More specifically the picture seems to capture an eskimo celebration or dinner. This is because within the picture, there is an eskimo passing food to another one. In conclusion, this picture takes place in Greenland, and captures eskimos passing out food for a dinner or celebration.
Landon B (Michigan)
@Ethan I agree with all of this, but they are actually Inuits.
Vincent S. (LCMS)
The photo took place in a cold area. I know this because there is snow on the ground, which only forms when it is at or below freezing. In addition, the people are bundled up in clothing, which means that it is cold out. Also, there is a fire inside the huts, which is used for warmth and cooking. The people in the photo are Eskimos. I know this because the clothing that the people in the photo are wearing looks like Eskimo clothing. In addition, the photo is taken in a snowy area, which is usually where Eskimos live. The Eskimos in the photo are eating. I know this because the woman in the foreground has a plate full of something that looks like food. Also, there is smoke coming out of their huts. This implies that there is a fire inside of the hut, which is used for both warmth and cooking. Based on this evidence, the photo took place in a cold area where there are Eskimos eating.
Landon B (Michigan)
@Vincent S. I agree with you, but they aren't called Eskimos, they are actually called Inuits.
Tyler T (LCMS)
This photo was taken somewhere very cold. I can tell because of the clothes the people are wearing. In addition, there is snow on the ground. This photo was taken in an eskimo village. I can tell this because of the tents that are in the back of the photo. In addition, the designs on the peoples’ clothes suggest that they are part of a tribe or village. The people in the background seem to be going somewhere to find something. I know this because they have a big group going. In addition, they seem to have lights because they will need them if they are traveling. Based on this evidence this photo was taken in an eskimo village before a journey or travel.
Riley S (LCMS)
This picture takes place in Northern North America. I know this because there is snow all around then and the people are wearing fur and multiply clothing around their hands, faces, and necks. The people in the picture use very little modern electronics. I know this because they are living in teepees and there is smoke coming out of the top of the teepees and one is holding fur although there is light. The people are taking in Native cultures. I know this because the clothing they are wearing has patterns that some use in their culture. In conclusion, the picture takes place in Northern North America where they take in native cultures and use very little modern-day electronics.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Riley S, thank you for sharing your observations. New to the conversation is your speculation that the people in the picture may use little, if any, modern-day electronics. You site details such as the smoke coming out of the top of the teepee as evidence. You also describe, "one is holding fur although there is light"; could you expand on this observation?
Lillie P (LCMS)
The setting is in a cold region of the earth. I know this because the people in this photo are wearing heavy jackets and clothes to protect them against the cold weather. Additionally, there is a lot of snow in the background which is always included in a cold region. There is a gathering going on. This is happening because one person is giving a plate of food to another. This type of interaction is typically found at parties and gatherings because the hosts need food. In addition, there is a fire in the back that is there to provide comfort to the guests. The people in the photo are Eskimos. This is true because all the people are wearing heavy clothing which is the attire that Eskimos wear. Additionally, there are teepees in the back. Those teepees are used by the Eskimos because they’re nomadic people who need to travel. Also, the region is cold which is the condition that Eskimos are accustomed to. Based on the evidence the photo was taken in a cold region during a gathering of Eskimos.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Lillie P Why do you think that that is food?
Daniel D (LMCS)
This picture clearly takes place during the winter since there is snow on the ground and all of the people are bundled up in winter coats with mittens and scarves. Additionally, the picture shows a tribe in the plain. I know this because the field is wide open with no other signs of modern civilization in sight nor trees or bushes. The picture captures an exchange between the people of the tribe and other people with goods. I know this because the lady in the center is holding a plate, serving white strips of material while another looks at the plate with interest. In conclusion, this picture shows a tribe in the plains during winter having a trade with other people.
Mrs. Schlaff's 1st Hour (Michigan)
We think this photo might be of a tribal celebration of spring somewhere in a northern climate. We notice that the people in the photo are wearing colorful clothing that appears handmade. It is the type of clothing that we would expect tribal people to wear traditionally in northern climates. We also noticed teepees that appear to be made of animal skins. Again, this appears to be the type of housing that tribal people traditionally would have. We noticed that the woman is serving some type of food on a silver platter. This, along with the fact that the people are wearing colorful clothing, makes us think that this is a celebration. We noticed that there is a lot of snow and the land appears flat like a tundra which makes us think that this is in the north. In addition, the lighting reminds us of spring, a bit brighter than winter. Finally, we think that the NY Times might post a picture dealing with spring and the time change on this week in particular.
Sam M (LCMS)
This picture consists of people in Greenland camping out for the night to get some rest before they move. The evidence is that it is very snowy which is also true in Greenland and the people in Greenland set up teepees while mobile in the frozen tundra. The people seem to be eating dinner currently because there is a woman with food on a plate handing it to another woman so she can eat it. It seems to be getting dark which is why they are settling down and setting up camp so they can have energy in the morning. This evidence furthermore suggests that these people in Greenland are settling down to eat dinner and prepare for another day of traveling.
Meadowlane Magic (Kitchener, Ontario)
I see smoke out of the teepees. I see lots of snow and ice. I think they might be Inuit. I think they're making bracelets out of caribou. I wonder where they are . I wonder what there doing.
Mrs. Schlaff's 3rd Hour (Michigan)
We believe that this picture is of a group of tribal members from northern North America trading birchbark with each other. It looks like the people are wearing traditional clothing because of the patterns and colors and the lack of complexity. In addition, there are teepees. This is the type of housing that we would expect tribal people to live in traditionally. Furthermore, we noticed that the landscape is flat and snowy. This makes us think of the landscape of northern Canada or Alaska. For this reason, we think that these people are in northern North America. To us the items on the tray appear to be birchbark. We believe they are trading birchbark to make fires. We noticed fires in the background, and we know that birchbark is very flammable.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
Thanks for this detailed observation, @Mrs. Schlaff's 3rd Hour. In putting together evidence, you have determined location based on weather and landscape, and identify their clothing as traditional. I'm curious about your assumptions regarding the items on the tray being birchbark; what makes you think "birchbark", in particular?
Mrs. Schlaff's 3rd Hour (Michigan)
@VTS Moderator We noticed the fire in the background. We know that birchbark is good for fueling fire and/or starting a fire. We have a lot of birch trees where we live. The white strips remind us of the strips of birchbark that we find in our forests in Michigan that are white and curl when peeled from the tree.
Dimas (Washington School for the Deaf)
I see a new picture. It is a new picture because it is clear and old pictures are more blurry and black and white. I think that all of the people are friends. I think they live in Canada, on Vancouver Island. Cowichan tribe lives there and their jackets look like the same as that tribe.
VTS Moderator (Tacoma, Washington)
@Dimas Thank you @Dimas. You've noticed the modern look of the photograph and are identifying a time period of when this could be taking place, as well as, the setting. The evidence you site regarding the Cowichan tribe garments is compelling! What more can you find?
Middle School - WSD (Vancouver, WA)
@Dimas We appreciate your inferences about the picture. We agree that it must be a recent picture because of the clear pixels. The heavy jackets and snow must mean that it is wintertime. The plate could animal food.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Thank you all for looking and sharing your comments this morning. Many of you are suggesting this is an Arctic region of the world. You believe the people may be having a celebration or trading some kind of goods. You conjecture that the people may be Inuit, Eskimo, Russian or Asian nomadic people. Keep looking for evidence within the picture to back up your assertions. Take some time to look at other images on the internet for comparison. It's an intriguing image.
Crosby Class (Arkansas)
We think this is in the Arctic. We think they are trading. We think it is in the late afternoon. We think they are Eskimos.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Crosby Class, thank you for your comments. You got me thinking about the kind of light in the picture. I'm wondering if it might be the Midnight Sun. Keep looking. There's always more you can find.
FLES (Georgia)
@VTS Moderator @Crosby Class, thank you for reminding us that it's in the Arctic. However, we think that the lady is perhaps welcoming someone to the tribe. Usually, in our neighborhood, when someone new moves in, we welcome them with food! (JUST A THOUGHT)
Bartosz (Illinois)
They are sharing something might be food I have no clue though. It’s also at sunrise so I’m assuming that it’s some sort of ritual or tradition because who wants to get up that early. The cabins in the back are releasing smoke so I’m assuming it keeps them warm due to the snow. The sunrise looks gorgeous in the background and it’s very cool.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Bartosz, thanks for joining in the conversation today. @Crosby Class suggests this may be sunset. I'm wondering if it's the Midnight Sun. What do you see that makes you believe it's sunrise? I' wondering about your term "cabins." I love that your have an emotional feeling about the picture.
Duaa (Glen Ellyn, IL)
In this picture, I see a person sharing food with someone else. They are both wearing coats and have two teepee type shelters by them. The food is something I don’t recognize and the style of the coats makes it seem like a cultural event. There is snow around and a few more people in the picture.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Duaa, thanks for wrestling with the meaning of this picture. That food does look strange. I wonder what kind of cultural event this may be? Remember, you can always look again. there will always be more to find.
Cooper (Glen Ellyn, IL)
Two people from a Northern part of the world, possibly Alaska, who are involved in some sort of trade. Many people are gathered, most likely from two different groups who are involved in this exchange. I also see two cone-shaped shelters, possibly teepees, in the back of the photo. The people are also using fire as a source of warmth.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Cooper, thank you posting this morning. There seem to be two basic interpretations of what is happening with the foreground individuals. Either they are trading goods or celebrating some kind of event. What do you see that makes you say they are trading?
Mike (Glen Ellyn)
There are two people talking happily and probably exchanging some stuff. It seems like a small society of group gathers in Alaska to enjoy their time. The warm cozy jackets that they're wearing make it seem a joyful place to be in along with the gorgeous scenery. I could find many more things that describe the places they're in, especially the tent shows that they're living in a cold place.
Haya (Glen Ellyn Illinois)
There are two people at a cold place because of the snow and heavy winter gear they are wearing. They are interacting with each other and could be sharing food with each other. It looks like the people are staying there because of the background and other people around them. The fire makes it look like it’s going to get dark and they need light and warmth.
JMack420C (Chicago)
What’s going on: Looks to be some holiday or celebration / gathering How I know: a group of people meeting together, the person in the center of the shot has a plate of food. The teepees have a fire of some sort inside indicated by the smoke. What more: seems to be early morning or late at night.
Elsa (Illinois)
They could be Eskimos at some sort of celebration - there’s colorful clothing, food, and lots of people who seem to be waiting in line to enter the second shelter, plus it’s either sunset or sunrise which can be meaningful.
Mrs. Thompson's English II Classes (Bennettsville, SC)
We think this is a group of friends living in Alaska. They have gathered for some event and the woman on the left is offering the woman on the right a treat. The treats look like something perhaps made from whale blubber. We think this is what is happening as the clothing looks native and they all have similar facial features and clothing. We think it might be a whale blubber treat, as we know that Alaskans use all parts of the whale for sustaining life. We see that they are also nomadic, as their dwellings resemble the Native American tipi which can be dismantled fairly quickly when needed in order to follow that which they hunt. Perhaps whales, seals, and fish?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Mrs. Thompson's English II Classes, thank you for your intellectual contributions today. I'm also wondering what's on that plate. Other students have suggested that these may be people from Russia or Asia. What do you see that makes you determine they are from Alaska?
Charlotte (Illinois)
I wonder if it is dawn or dusk. They seem to be happy despite the cold, which implies that they live there and are used to it.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Charlotte, thanks for your quick "snapshot" post. The people do seem comfortable in their environment. We have some other people wondering if it is morning or evening or perhaps the Midnight Sun. What do you think the individuals are doing? Where do you think this is taking place?
Omar (Glen Ellyn)
Good vibes are being spread all around Alaska in this photo. Just a family bring life to the town, working towards warmth around the Tee Pees.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Omar, you're connecting with this picture on an emotional level. It does seem like a Happy picture. What do you see that suggests Alaska to you? There are many cold parts of the world with happy people in them.
Sof (Illinois)
People together around tents chillin. The tents and the people make me think that. The food makes it seem like they are just chilling.
ryan (ontario canada)
The things that stuck out to me at first were, the teepees in the back, the bowl in the persons hand, and the clothing the people are wearing and it all makes me think that this picture was taken in Nunavut, Canada and if I were to take a guess, I would say that this is some sort of aboriginal ritual of some sorts
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@ryan, thank you for your comments this morning. I love the way you chart where your eyes are going. It was interesting to me that you assert that these are aboriginal people in Nunavut, Canada; while your contemporaries in the United States generally conclude the image takes place in Alaska. Students from other parts of the world suggest Russian nomads.
Will Coleman (Wheaton, IL)
In this picture there are people in a snowy environment passing food around and using fire for warmth.
Derrick (Chicago)
The picture to me seems to be showing a group of people who live in a tundra like place and the two individuals in the front seems to be going through some type of traditional ritual like event with the tray of stuff I can’t identify and their traditional looking clothing, though it could be their typical attire.
Austin (Illinois)
Their houses have a fire inside, while they are exchanging onions. There is smoke coming from the top of the teepee. One person has a plate with onion on it, and it looks like they are giving it to there friend.
Raquel (Illinois)
In this I see a people wearing super warm clothes that cover their heads. Also there are cone shaped huts in the background that looks like their homes. They look like they are not technology advanced by the items in the picture. Also it shows a person giving interesting shaped things to another person who looks like they are smiling.
Emma (sms)
In today picher i see.people on a stranded island it might be that there boat sunk into the sea. They are passing out food. They are form another country.
Austin (Glen Ellyn)
Hey look as if they are gathering for dinner or coming together as a family it looks cold
Madison (Chicago)
Seems to be a group gathering and two people are exchanging food and seems to b heaving a good time. Looks like a cultural meeting. While the people in the back are gathered around the TP’S and the fire. In the background you can see it’s a cold environment and people are wearing cultural clothes and the sunset is hitting off of the snow.
Ms. Klahr's 2nd Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
They are a group of people in the snow who use fires to not freeze. There also two cone-shaped cabins. In the picture it is almost dawn and almost everyone is talking to each other. The snow looks beautiful and they seem to have a great time.
Johnny (OH -IO)
I think they are russsian nomads because of there heavy clothing and facial features suggest that they are in europe or asia
Ms. Wicker (He Dog, South Dakota)
In this picture I see one person passing a tray of tea cups that appear to need washing to another person. There are many people in the background and conical, tipi-like dwellings with smoke coming out. It looks like the end of a social gathering, and it looks very cold. The clothing is colorful and looks warm, and the dwellings appear to be covered in hides. This photograph reminds me of some photos I saw the other day, from a photographer who traveled with Russian deer herders. The clothing and the houses are very similar, as well as the climate.
Natalie & J (Oviedo FL)
Hello! We think this is a quiet meeting and the women is selling this man something — whether it’s whale bone or land — and they will probably have a feast or dinner, noting by the dark blubber smoke emerging from the teepees. The location is probably up north, judging by the freezing temperature, and is probably taking place in the morning. In the background we see what could be the coast.
Hunter (The Goat) (Area 51)
It looks like they are trading some type of goods, maybe food, I do not know. I also see some tipi's in the background with smoke coming out of them. I see a group of six people in the back talking. It looks like they live in a tundra environment. It also appears to be at sunset or sunrise. They also seem to be in some traditional clothes.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Thank you for all of the comments that are coming in today. I'm very intrigued by the picture and want to know who these people are. I've looked at some internet images to get some ideas and realized there are many Arctic people groups. Most of you suggest these are Inuit or Eskimo people. @Ping Pong thinks these may be Russian people. I'd like to challenge you to look a bit deeper, and find evidence for your assertions in the picture and perhaps through internet searches. I'm looking forward to the "reveal" on thursday afternoon.
NLE steve (parmelee)
As you can see there's TP'S and it looks like they are talking to each other. There is snow looks like they are visiting the place.?
Ms. Wicker (He Dog, South Dakota)
@NLE steve Interesting observations. What about the picture looks like people are visiting? What else do you notice about the picture?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@NLE steve, thanks for looking today. Who do you think the people are who are talking to each other? Where do you think they are visiting? There's always more to find.
cody (south dakota)
in this picture i see tepees, and a tribe of people.it looks like there in a cold climate, it looks like there in alaska
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@cody, thanks for joining in today. What do you see that makes you say Alaska and not some other cold place?
Ms. Wicker (He Dog, South Dakota)
@cody Cody, thank you for sharing your observations. What about the people looks like they are a tribal people? What else do you notice? Do you think they live in those teepees through the winter?
erzen (ohio)
they could be in aferica.....
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@erzen, hmmm. Can you elucidate us?
Jack (Ohio)
It appears that it is a nomadic group of people that live in a tundra environment. It also appears that the two people are trading something and perhaps sharing a meal together based on the smoke coming out of the tepees. There is also a picturesque background of either a sunset or sunrise.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jack, thanks for looking this morning. You've made some careful assertions, allowing for multiple interpretations. What do you see that makes you think they are nomadic? It is indeed picturesque, an accurate word.
erzen (ohio)
They could be mescocos, they have TPs, eating or trading, Russian Nomads, and they coud be in the artic.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@erzen, thanks for sharing your ideas today. I'm not familiar with the the term "mescocos." Can you tell me who they are?
Julieta (OH)
I think they are nomads in Alaska, and the reason why she is holding a plate of food is maybe because they are getting ready for dinner. Also, they look tough, and they also live in a tepee.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Julieta, thank you for your comments today. I'm wondering what you mean when you say, "tough?" What leads you to believe they could be in Alaska?
ava (ohio)
they look like they are enjoying vacation in the arctic. They may be a biker gang.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@ava, thanks for commenting today. What do you see that suggests this is a vacation? Some people believe they could be trading. I'm especially intrigued by your idea that they are a biker gang. What do you see in the picture that makes you say that?
Pong-Ping (Mother Russian)
They look like they are from Alaska or Mother Russia. They live in tepees and they are cooking dinner.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Pong-Ping, thanks for joining us today. How could you determine if these people are from Alaska or Russia?
Pong-Ping (Mother Russian)
@VTS Moderator, They from Alaska or MOTHER Russia because the background of the picture there is a lot of snow. Back in MOTHER Russia it gets very cold and snowy.
Ms. Finch's 5F (MVNY)
We see what looks like a native tribe in the arctic/Alaska. Because of the snow and no trees which seems to be consistent with a tundra environment. We see tepees. It might be a festival because of the food and lights and their are a lot of people. There are no children. They might be eating squid/calamari or some type of fish.
hi i'm here (Ohio)
I think these are native people living in tipis. Proably somewhere in Alaska or somewhere far north. The two people in front are trading something that looks kind of like food.
Max (OHIO)
I think these are russian nomads living on a glacier. They are wearing cultural coats with patterns.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Max, your comment about living on a glacier is intriguing. @Ping Pong suggests it's a beach. What do you see that makes you say it's a glacier?
Max (OHIO)
@VTS Moderator I see the snow they are wearing coats and i see the water in the back round
Marcella (Ohio)
I Think they are eskimo's in northern russia.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Marcella, thanks for responding. What do you see that makes you think there are Eskimos in Northern Russia?
Marcella (Ohio)
@VTS Moderator They seem to be siberian Yupiks In northeastern russia. The enviroment looks like russia
Augustine (Ohio)
I personally thing that these people inhabit northern Russia . The clothes remind me of Russian culture and clothing.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Augustine Hi! It's interesting that you thought the people may come from northern Russia based off of their clothing, I didn't think of that. What do you think they are doing? When do you think this photo was taken?
Ping-pong (Mother Russia)
People on a a beach are eating dinner
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ping-pong, @Max thinks this is taking pace on a glacier. How would that work with your idea of a beach?
henry (Ohio)
I think these people are Russian nomads who are trading for food.
benjaboi (O-H-I-O)
They are russian Eskimos, there is snow, and teepees
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@benjaboi, what do you see that makes you say this is Russia?
benjaboi (O-H-I-O)
They are russian eskimos
Johnny (OH -IO)
I think the are russian nomads
Brooklyn (New Hampshire)
@Johnny why do you think they are russian nomads
Johnny (OH -IO)
@Brooklyn because they are wwaeing heavy clothing and there facial features look like ther some one in asia or europe
Jason (New Hampshire)
i see snow i see tp's i see eskimos so maybe its in alaska and she has a plate with something on it i don't know what but maybe there getting ready for dinner because on the plate she has it could be food
FLES (Georgia)
My 5th grade students think that there is some type of celebration taking place. Some students think that they are trading items; whereas, others do not think they are trading because both do not have items in their hands. One student thinks that the person maybe loaning someone something.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@FLES, your students have keyed in on the foreground of the picture. It's great to compare a few different ideas. Perhaps they can look again and answer the question, "What more can we find?"
Brooklyn (New Hampshire)
I think these people are living in Africa. I see theses forts. In the front you can see what looks like a lady handing out food. There is a lot of snow on the ground. People are wearing heavy coats. It also looks like they are setting fires in there forts so they can stay warm.
henry (Ohio)
@Brooklyn Africa??
Augustine (Ohio)
@Brooklyn Africa seems very unlikely, considering that even when it does rarely snow, it is not that much. The Sahara would be the only place in Africa with no trees in sight. Snow would be melted quickly on a desert. You would be able to see trees at least in the distance.
taylor (New Hampshire)
i think they are in alaska or in russia because of what they are wearing.I think they are a native american tribe eating food.i think they are a native american tribe because of the ti pees in the back of the picture.
Cameron (New Hampshire)
There s people in alaska and there eating fish or a animal. they have small huts with fires in them. they look american and or asian
Ms. Klahr's 1st Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
I think its a Native American tribe in maybe Alaska that is eating dinner. I can tell its a Native American tribe because of the Ti Pees in the background. I can tell its in Alaska because Alaska has lots of tribes and its very cold.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ms. Klahr's 1st Period, thanks for joining us today. You've made a great start. There are many Arctic peoples. What specifically makes you say these individuals are indigenous peoples of America?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Good morning. Glad you've joined the conversation this morning. We've got a great image to explore together. Remember to take some time to look at the comments of other people and respond to those comments.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We noticed that this picture is of what appears to be a Native American group based on the tents (or maybe teepees) in the background and the clothing of the people in the picture. We also noticed that the group is sharing a plate of something, but we are not sure what. It looks like their is snow on the ground and water in the background. They are wearing clothes that are warm which makes us think they are in an area that is cold. We also noticed the fires that are burning and the smoke coming from the tents. There are lights that we think are lighting a path.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade, thanks for joining us today. You've observed many things in this picture. Where do you think this is taking place? What does the style of clothing have to say about these people?
Ava P (LCMS)
In this picture, the people in the picture are Eskimos. I know this because Eskimos live in cold areas like in the picture. Eskimos also wear the same type of clothes and live in the same type of huts. Additionally, this picture was taken in Alaska. I know this because Alaska is very snowy and has Eskimos living there. Lastly, the Eskimo people are trading. I know this because one of the people in the front is giving something to another person. Based on the evidence, Eskimos living in Alaska are trading.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ava P, thank you for your insightful comments this morning. I'm curious to know why you think these people are Inuit rather than some other nomadic people who live near the Arctic Circle?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ava P, thanks for you comments and assertions. I've been looking on the internet to try to understand this picture myself. I've noticed there are many people groups living around the Arctic Circle. What do you see that makes you say "Eskimo" rather than any other group? What in the picture ties these people to Alaska rather than another cold region?
Grüffelo (Germany)
@Ava P I really like your comment I think the reason that you tell that they are eskimos is really good. 👍 But i think you could have gotten into more things like the sky or the “t-pees”
Brighid S (LCMS)
In this picture, there’s a bunch of people that live in a very cold place possibly Alaska. I can tell this might be Alaska because the floor is covered in snow, the people are wearing very thick clothes to keep warmth, and they seem to live in teepees. Also, I see people that may not live in there area coming over and possibly trading or just getting to know them. I can tell this because there’s many people gathered around each other or standing with someone else either talking or holding a material that the other person might want. Finally, the people in the picture seem to be used to the very cold weather. I can tell this because of how they are standing, they aren’t wrapping their arms around themselves or holding onto someone else instead just casually standing which shows they are used to the climate.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Brighid S, thanks for sharing your ideas this morning. I appreciated your comment about their comfort level in the cold. They do seem completely at ease in the climate. You seem to have an understanding that this is some kind of social gathering. Maybe you could do some internet searching and find out more about where these people live.
Kayla V. (LCMS)
This picture takes place in either Alaska or Antarctica. I know this because the people in the picture are wearing very heavy, warm clothes and there is snow covering the ground everywhere. Next, the people in this picture are Eskimos and this is their home. I know this because there are teepees in the back with smoke coming out of them. This means that the people started fires to make a warm, comfortable place to live when it gets cold. Lastly, there is some sort of party happening. One woman is giving the other woman what seems to be food. This could be a party/gathering or maybe an offering. In conclusion, this picture shows some Eskimo people in their homeland who are coming together with each other.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Kayla V., thanks for commenting today. I agree that this is some kind of party or get-together in a cold place. I'm wondering what the gathering represents. Who is present? What could you do to pinpoint exactly where this is taking place?
Viktoriya R. (LCMS)
This picture is taken in Alaska in modern times because of the cold appearance in the picture and the color of the picture. There is snow on the floor and the people are wearing warm clothing. The people in the picture are eskimos because of the type of tents they live in and the style of clothing that they wear. Their clothing is of traditional patterns and the tents are small and made of weak material. Lastly, in the picture the the eskimos are trading and living together. I know this because the woman in the picture is giving the man food and they are socializing together. Also, there are multiple tents near each other indicating that they live with each other. In conclusion the eskimos in Alaska are trading and living with each other.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Viktoriya R., thank you for giving us your ideas this morning. You've made an assumption that these people are "Eskimos." I've looked online this morning to help myself understand this images and I found there are many Arctic peoples. What makes you think these are Eskimo/Inuit people?
Keyri P (LCMS)
In the picture the people are called Eskimos I know this because they have inhabited the cold temperature in Alaska. Additionally, in the picture had been taken in Alaska I know this because the white snow blanket that has covered the whole land shows that this picture has been taking in Alaska. The women on the right of the picture seem as if both women are trading food, both are from different tribes or groups of Eskimos due to the patterns on their jackets. In conclusion, Eskimos are trading in Alaska for food in order to survive the cold wind.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Keyri P , thank you for sharing your interpretation of the picture. There are many groups of people who live int this environment. What do you see that makes you say these are Eskimo people?
pfadi_06 (Germany)
@Keyri I found your comment good because you give a reason to your speculations. I agree with the have facts in your comment
Courtney F (LCMS)
This picture was taken in the modern-day. I know this because the picture is in color and it has very good camera quality. If the picture was taken a long time ago the picture would be grainy. The people in the picture are nomadic. I know this because in the picture behind them is t-pees. The people probably follow an animal herd, so they need portable houses. Also, I know that people who lived in t-pees are normally nomadic. The location of the photo was taken in Alaska. I know this because the ground is covered in snow. Also the clothing the people are wearing look like they are made for every cold weather. I know that people from Alaska can wear clothing like this if they live where it is not civilized. In addition in the background, it looks like they’re some kind of special light happening. In conclusion, there are nomadic people living in present-day Alaska.
Mrs. G 4th grade (NJ)
We think the Inuits hunt animals to make their clothing. We think they do this for a good reason- to stay warm and eat. Since there are teepees they may be camping. We think the man is giving an eskimo food or wood to keep the fire burning. Maybe the place isn't too cold because there seems to be water in the background that is not frozen, even though they are standing on snow.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Mrs. G 4th grade Thank you for responding today. I'm curious to know about your assertion that there is a connection between hunting animals and the clothing of the individuals in the picture. You mention Inuits and Eskimos. There are many people groups in the cold regions of the world. I'm wondering what you see in the picture that suggests these two groups?
Bryce d (LCMS)
The setting in this picture is in a cold climate. I know this because there is snow on the ground. In addition to snow being on the ground, the people are dressed in warm clothing. The people in the picture are part of a tribe. I know this because they have patterns on their clothing and on the tee-pees. The people are gathering for some sort of celebration. I know this because the woman is passing out food and the people are gathering. In conclusion, a tribe in a cold climate is having a celebration.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Bryce d, thank you for your post this morning. You've been very careful to not make any assertions that you can't back up from your observations of the picture. It also seems to me that they are gathering for some kind of celebration. We'll both need to look some more for further evidence of this.
Ms. Kalmes Reading (Marlboro)
The people in the photograph are wearing big coats... this makes me think it is in the wintertime. It looks like there could be ashes, snow, or sand on the ground? I think these are ancestors from the Inuit tribe. There are tepees in the background... maybe they live in them? Or use them for protection. Are they trying to survive something? It looks like they might have food in their hands.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ms. Kalmes Reading, thanks for your comments this morning. I can see you're trying to figure out what's happening in this picture. I'm curious about your word "ancestors." Are these present day Inuits or do you think these are people from the past? What do you see that makes you say they are Inuits?
Jasmine (Wee woo)
-People in the snow -Heavy clothing -Food -Tents
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jasmine, thanks for looking today. This initial list will help you flesh out a more complete story of what's happening here. We'd love to see that.
Hello (Scotland)
@Jasmine I find you comment good, but you can write more sentences and not all hearding. What is your favourit thing in the picture?
Christimer (Malediven)
On the Picture we can see Inuits and they are celebrating something they have some weird stuff on a plate i dont know if its food or some other Stuff maybe wood they have some cool blue lights in the Background and it looks very warm in theire houses
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Christimer, thanks for your comments today. I agree that there is something "weird" on that plate. Another students thinks it's some kind of snack made of an animal. What do you see that makes you say "Inuit" rather than another nomadic tribe?
Geile (Sau)
@Christimer oh, that’s interesting! I also think they are celebrating anything haha. It looks very cosy. I like your ideas but are they really Inuits? Can u explain that to me? Have a great day Christimer! See ya ✌️
Grüffelo (Germany)
The Picture is probably about some nomadic people that are watching maybe the polar lights and eating some food that kinda looks like chips but out of some animals. They probably build a little camp to watch something in the sky maybe even a Spaceshuttle.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Grüffelo, thanks for posting your comments today. You've made some insightful assertions. Take a look again. There is always more to find. Where do you think this is taking place? What can you say about the individuals involved?
Grüffelo (Germany)
@VTS Moderator the individuals could be some Inuits because of their primal clothing. It could be in Alaska somewhere where it’s cold, I mean it’s really obvious that there is snow on the floor🙃. And I don’t know why but the lamps that are in the ice look really weird. I can’t say why maybe because of the blue lighting but I don’t know.
Miss Macd's Class (Scotland)
This is people in native clothing, perhaps in Alaska. Their homes look like tee pee tents rather than houses. It would be much harder to live here than in Scotland because of the cold, although their clothes are usually thick and handmade. It may be a celebration with special food, like we have Christmas.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Miss Macd's Class, thanks for joining us today. You've noticed some specific things happening in this picture and related it to your own environment. Please look again. there are always more things to find. I'm wondering about the relationships of the individuals. What do you think?
Miss Macd's Class (Scotland)
@VTS Moderator Thank oyu for your comments and question. We think the two people in the front are friends as they are so close together and one is offering food to another. We also wonder if they are a married couple because of their closeness, their dress and because they are standing apart from the others. Also, because they are still awake (or up early) due to the horizon we wonder if this is a special celebration continuing.
