The Coronavirus. The Stock Market. Now Biden’s Comeback Adds to Trump’s Bad Week.

The only thing that heartens me about Super Tuesday is that the latest Michigan poll has Biden beating Sanders in that primary. If Biden sweeps the Rust Belt primaries, he will prove he's the best candidate to face Trump, because 2020 will be exactly like 2016: It will be entirely decided by Rust Belt whites workers. We know they overwhelmingly like Bernie better than Trump in 2016, because he crushed Trump in the exit polls. And it's hard to believe they will hate Biden of Scranton the way they rightly hated Hillary of Scranton. But as our Dear Leader would say, " We'll just have to see how it works out." If Biden loses to Trump, that will be entirely the fault of the Southern blacks who chose another totally uncharismatic Establishment liberal to win the hearts and minds of Rust Belt whites away from Trump. I very much hope he can, but it's on the blacks if he can't, just as it was with their totally disastrous choice of Hillary. And, God knows, it will be the blacks who suffer the worst, for many, many decades, if they were wrong, just as the blacks utterly shot themselves in the foot last time by listening to their preachers and choosing Hillary instead of the guy who beat Trump worse than she did throughout 2016 in the polls.

Trump tweets are past their pull date. His failure to keep us safe when it matters shows him to be a timid tyrant who prefers to snipe at people from the dark instead of a reliable leader. He's Mr. Glib at his rallies and when he tweets, but speaks like a street bum when addressing the people who hired him to lead the country. He's not only dangerous but an embarrassment to 300 years of progress. Enough. No more corruption, no more lies, no more trump.
Mike (Syracuse, NY)
@Zeke27 blame China, not him. China is out of control and has too much world power, but every country sits on their hands instead of taking care of the problem.

Hang in there, PT! Respectfully, you may wish to consider taking a page from LBJ. He said of his time in office it included "... years of unparalleled achievement..." failing to have anticipated yours. LBJ gave a speech to the nation in 1968 - coincidentally in March - about an earlier crisis, seeking "... peace in Vietnam and Southeast Asia ..." He said in part "... What we won ... must not now be lost in suspicion, and distrust, and selfishness, and politics among any of our people. ..." He continued ''... I have concluded that I should not permit the Presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing in this political year. To the shock of all, he then announced "Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President. ..." Your acting similarly would manifestly eclipse LBJ's. It would obliterate any hateful and false suggestion that you are a divider of citizens and destroyer of their country's unique and uniquely implemented principles. It would pave the way for the flood of world-wide praise and adulation which you correctly assume would follow. But, of course, like Cecil Rhodes, you may in your modest way feel "So little done, so much to do." Should you decide not to seek/accept you may wish to cap ... everything, by serving in a clinic until your having vanquished coronavirus is completed and appropriately and fully acknowledged. As you wish, PT, sans doute toujours.
John Townsend (Mexico)
The GOP is persisting in its attacks on Hunter Biden pertaininmg to the Ukrainian ‘quid pro quo'' matter. Don jr. should also be scrutinized for his involvement with Giuliani's shenanigans there. Besides, trump's attacks on Biden and son fly in the face of his repeated assertions that his own son (Don jr.) is totally exonerated by the Mueller report. How does he know this? AG Barr is still sitting on the real (ie unredacted) Mueller report. It was supposed to have been released to the Congressional Judicial Committee several months ago. All critical parts of the report related to Don jr. have been redacted (ie covered up). Go figure
In the wheels (AZ)
"The coronavirus was spreading, the stock market was plummeting and his administration was getting blamed for an inadequate response to a health crisis." Should read, "his administration was rightly condemned for its foolhardy, mendacious and incompetent response to the health crisis."
Scott G (Rochester NY)
It's remarkable Trump has been able to fool so many Americans into thinking he is competent for this long. His continual down-playing and lying about the corona virus will likely be his Waterloo. Political influence, power and money do not create immunity from a novel virus. Now his hanger-on supporters will feel some of the pain their President has been causing the rest of the country.
EW (Glen Cove, NY)
Reminder to all those in the Trump orbit: The statute of limitations for crimes committed in 2020 will not expire before the 2024 election is over.
Steve Ell (Burlington, VT)
If the risk is low then why doesn’t trump visit a clinic and shake some hands? (And then wash his own, of course.) Isn’t every one of trump’s lies an abuse of power? Isn’t there a law that categorizes his lies to the American people as crimes? If shouting fire in a crowded theatre is not protected by the first amendment, (see Schenck vs United States 1919) with the decision citing speech that is dangerous as the reason, then how can trump be permitted to endanger all Americans with his hunches and lies? The supreme court’s decision and justice Oliver Wendell Holmes opinion cites that when dangerous speech is a clear and present danger, the American people have a right to be protected from it. The perpetrators can be held responsible under the law. Make trump stop.
PMD (Arlington, Virginia)
They are whispering down the suburban lane... Many Republican friends are ready to vote for Biden.
M.Davis (Georgia)
If you think Biden hurts Trump's reelection campaign you're living in LALA land. Biden or Bernie - both will give the Republicans all 3 branches of government for at least the next 4 years. It's going to be a slaughter.
rene (laplace, la)
@M.Davis i thought the judicial branch was supposed to be nonpolitical.
Take it from a Swede (Stockholm, Sweden)
American Convention on Human Rights §21: (2) No one shall be deprived of his property except upon payment of just compensation, for reasons of public utility or social interest, and in the cases and according to the forms established by law. Bernie Sanders ”Issue” §35: The 22,000 largest businesses in the U.S. will annually be required to provide at least 2 percent of stock into collectively owned funds. ... It’s a good thing you put this declaration together, as a reminder. Because every 50 years or so, a ”freedom-fighter” emerges who lost his moral compass. The youth in the U.S. grew up with the privilegie of peaceful ownership. Meanwhile, in Europe, Asia and South America, people endured seeing their houses, companies and savings being confiscated by ”friends of the people”, without compensation. Bad ideas never die.
L osservatore (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene)
The local religious dogma here insists that all the poor people hate Trump - if only because they are lectured on the issue regularly. Recent polls from 3 or 4 organizations all show that Pres. Trump will enjoy THREE TIMES the share of the black vote that he did in '16. Would these numbers flip New York? California?
gary e. davis (Berkeley, CA)
The bad week dramatizes a reality that has been ongoing since he declared himself a candidate for president: Trump plays Master of Ceremonies, posturing it as leadership, but has accomplished nothing. I want to see journalistic analysis drive that message home in every possible dimension. What's been great about the economy graphs as linear follow-through from the Obama presidency. Trump has contributed nothing (except harm: Rob from his "base" by sucking away the social safety net for the sake of that big tax cut). I'd like to see evidentiary modeling of what would have likely been the reality of a Hillary presidency: We'd have great global alliances. We'd have leadership on the Paris Accords. We'd still have had the China vs. U.S. issues. Everything constructive in the Trump years has not been due to Trump insights. The Fed, Executive agency leaderships, all of it: Trump has just been playing MC—or else he's the bully in the china shop, breaking everything he can mock. And mock is all he can do. He won't survive public debates against Biden that confront Trump with a mountain of facts. If Trump can't bolt from accountability, he's toast.
Chris (SW PA)
Trump does as he wants, says what he wants and doesn't care what happens to anyone. He never has a bad week. Stop pretending he cares what you or anyone thinks. The institutions of the US are so weak that a criminal runs the country. Trump may fear catching the virus himself, that's about it. It's good to hear what the serfs think, but Trump doesn't think like that.
peapodesque (nyack new york)
It seems many are forgetting that this creature , will lie, cheat , steal and much worse to keep his position. He did it before , and he has had four years for the Russians to refine their technology, and dismantle virtually every good piece of legistlation of the Obama years. He has done Vlads bidding , and there is nothing as dangerous as a cornered animal, especially when it is a cowardly weasel. The only way he will be removed is with force. If the virus takes off here, he will declare martial law and suspend the elections indefinitely. He knows the moment he is not president, he will be skewered by the Southern District of New York. And, spend the rest of his life in Jail
Ian Miller (Boston MA)
Bernie friends, Trump is trying to sow division, screaming “rigged” at every turn. Don’t buy it. Please don't buy Trump's propaganda. We’re having a contest of real voters. Nothing wrong with that. No superdelegate nonsense. Like Bernie says, let's give the nom to whoever gets the most votes. Above all, from Bernie to Biden voters: what unites us is much more than what divides. I don’t just mean despising Trump. Bernie and Biden both want to (1) get more healthcare to more people. We might disagree on how but we can’t deny Biden means it; he helped Obama get healthcare to >15 million folks who didn’t have it, most folks with lower income or pre-existing conditions; (2) reduce gun deaths, via background checks, waiting periods, renewing assault weapons ban, maybe even repealing gun maker immunity from liability, etc. (3) reverse trump tax cuts for rich, raise capital gains taxes so middle class incomes are not taxed higher than rich folks investments, raise effective corporate taxes via closing loopholes (no more Amazon 0%!), and more. (4) fight climate change. (5) restore honesty decency good governance & respect for science to the EPA CDC etc (Obama and Biden created an epidemics “czar” on NSC which Trump eliminated). (6) humane treatment of immigrants. (7) protect voting rights (~700 polling stations closed in TX since ~2013), and much more. I know there are important disagreements, but there are big agreements too. Let's defeat Trump together.
Robert Mac (NYC)
I’ll walk barefoot across broken glass to my polling location to vote for Joe Biden. I only request that his AG criminally investigate Donald Trump, his children, and the Trump Organization.
sam beal (california)
once Trump becomes a citizen the State of New York will put him behind bars unless he moves to Sochi, Russia.
Mike (Syracuse, NY)
@Robert Mac Based on what views?
treabeton (new hartford, ny)
Height of irony: Trump touts the stock market as the indicator that demonstrates his policies are working for America. But, then, the market rallies (bigly!) on news Joe Biden will be a formidable challenger to Trump. The market is saying a Trump loss in November would be a blessing for the country. The market would be right.
Mike (Syracuse, NY)
@treabeton It means a Bernie loss will be a blessing for this country, not a Trump loss.
S Butler (New Mexico)
Hey Mike Bloomberg and Tom Steyer. Take however many millions of dollars it takes to get the testing kits needed to fight this coronavirus and donate them to this cause. Biden's going to beat Trump either way and this might actually help him do it. We really need somebody with deep pockets to get this done. Trump's dropping the ball. He's in denial. Thank you in advance.
Shonun (Portland OR)
>>>Trump campaign officials... said they planned to undercut his support from black voters by highlighting Mr. Biden’s vote for the now-controversial 1994 crime bill, while talking up Mr. Trump’s work on criminal justice reform.<<< Three words. Central Park Five. Those are the words African American voters should remember when it comes to Trump.
Mamma's Child (New Jersey)
@Shonun Yes, indeed. Do not forget the Birther lie. The list is long.
Linda Miilu (Chico, CA)
@Shonun That was really terrible; those boys spent years in prison, and they were all innocent. Finally, a man was arrested for assault; he confessed to the crime with details only known to the police. Trump kept on with his accusations of guilt. Obama produced Hawaii's long form birth certificate which no other American citizen has had to do; Trump clung to his lie about Obama's birth record. Trump's grandfather ran from Germany's draft, sound familiar? Trump had a quack doctor invent bone spurs to keep him out of Vietnam while my cousin and his best friend joined the Marines; his friend is a name on the Wall. Trump reduced funding for the CDC; now we are facing a pandemic. He has endangered our national park system with staff cuts; he wants to allow oil drilling and mining interests to pollute Teddy Roosevelt's gift to all of us. He is going to face the man he most fears, not the man he was hoping to smear as a Communist. His friend, Netanyahu, is now accused of corruption. His friend, MBS, is now accused of ordering the murder and dismemberment of a Saudi dissident residing in VA. Putin and Russian oligarchs cannot save Trump this time. The So Dist. of NY is waiting for this criminal to leave office so they can indict him. He is unraveling; his tweets are getting more deranged than his incoherent rants at his rallies.
rulonb (Minneapolis)
Pelosi's resolve in pushing ahead with the impeachment is looking better and better: through that process the American people were presented with some of the facts surrounding President Trump's bald-faced treachery visa vi Ukraine and the Bidens. Speaking of which, with yesterday's primary results, can there be any doubt the President will go back to milking that cow, Biden/corruption/Ukraine, however sour the milk is to discerning voters?
Erin (MA)
Apparently he doesn’t realize it’s only his own gullible base who pays attention to anything he says. Everyone else knows he’s full of baloney.
Guitar M (New York, NY)
A bad week for Trump is a good week for me. 11/3/20. VOTE.

The Trump Slump replaced by the Biden Bounce—works for my 401k! Let's put a Delawarean in the White House and end our national nightmare.
L osservatore (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene)
If this was Barack Obama reacting to the H1N1 situation, we'd have months more to wait before the federal government woke up.
Robert (Out west)
Please explain. Or more precisely, document. Facts: they’re really kind of important. Well, unless you’re a Trumpist. One who thinks good hand-washing is liberal.
John Doe (Johnstown)
For sure I am that this time Democrats finally have Trump. Yawn.
Bayricker (Washington)
You should have redone this hit piece after the market roared back. That aside, Joe Biden is not gaffing but displaying clear signs that his cognitive abilities are degrading and that he lacks the stamina for a presidential campaign. Trump is going to chew Biden up and Sanders voters are not going to show and vote for Biden. This will put Trump in the White House until at least 2025. Good for business at the NY Times.
Tim (Margaret River)
@Bayricker But not good for the USA. If trump is re-elected your country will lose all credibility on the world stage. Your current president has been exposed as a compulsive liar who cares nothing for the rule of (your own) law. What he lacks in statesmanship, competence and honour, he by far makes up in vitriol, racism and pathetic schoolyard name calling. I have always admired US presidents, be they Democrat’s or Republican. Even Nixon, who at least had the grace to resign. trump is a disgrace to the office of president, to the people of the United States and a laughingstock to the rest of the world. How on earth have you sunk so low?
Harley Leiber (Portland OR)
We will never forget the likes of Trump long after he and his cartel of greedy, lying, cheating, appointees are gone. We will study his administration not so much for what it accomplished ( next to nothing productive) but how he got in there in the first place. Yes, the electoral college gave it to him, and HRC failed to campaign aggressively in key spots, and Comey reopening an investigation was also a factor. But, no matter how, he did get in there. Generations of American law, tradition and practice were then besmirched by this cad who enjoys wrecking things, caging kids, and being offensive and obtuse. So, it's been a learning experience. The question is what have we learned and how do we protect our democracy from another hubristic, self involved, narcissistic, inexperienced mess again. Biden is the beginning of the process. People see him as a life preserver. A protector. And I suspect he will win by a landslide.
Bodyman (Santa Cruz, Ca)
He’s too clueless to realize that his tweets in favor of Bernie are what helped Biden and hurt Sanders. He thinks Democratic voters are as clueless as his voters are. We knew he was playing a manipulation game and was chomping at the bit to be able to run against the socialist. It totally backfired on him. Throw another game at us, Trump. We’re more than willing to play.
Frank (Idaho)
I think a Joe Biden/Stacey Abrams ticket would be unbeatable.
Eric J. (Brooklyn)
Propaganda - eye catching title. Trump’s week will get a whole lot worse if Bernie is his opponent (but you won’t print that).
Mike (Western MA)
I love and have read the NYT for years but Maggie Haberman’s coverage of Trump is lacking. She’s always trying to “explain” the president and I don’t need any explaining. Trump has almost destroyed our beautiful democracy. Report that Maggie.
Amir Girgis (New York)
Please, NYT... not so fast of putting Biden the establishment favorite on top ... Bernardo is gonna go after him cause he learned his lesson when Hillary cut him short in 2016... *Please the republicans are ready to investigate Hunter Biden which gonna crippled Biden campaign in the hot summer, and into the fall !
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
I would love to hear Bernie Sanders call Trump a Pathological liar...and "YOUR kids are crooks"- to his face- in a debate. Trump wouldn't be able to handle it.
treabeton (new hartford, ny)
@Candlewick And why do your children think it is a good idea to shoot elephants and grizzly bears?
The Night They Raided... (MA)
@Candlewick I think Trump would just agree, and then go on as if it were meaningless.

@McM yes, his victory over Sanders. Has nothing to do with Trump.
Old Mainer (Portland Maine)
Reporter: Mr. President, the NYT says events are out of your control. Any comment? Trump: I'm always in control. No President in history controls things like I do. Look at the coronaryvirus thing. We have it so under control it's begging to go back to China! Wait'll we hit it with a million tests a week. The big Pharma bosses--I had them here the other day. 'Get it done,' I told them. 'No delays, no excuses.' They promised treatments like no country has ever had. In a week or two it'll be cleaned right out. We'd be done already except Osama-Obama messed everything up. What a loser. Did you know he broke the Seedy Sea? A lotta people don't know that. He shut it down because of the Hebolah virus. That's what they say and I believe it.
Mixilplix (Alabama)
My fellow Trump voters. We really wanted this man?
Moe Thompson (BC)
Trump's attacks on the Biden family didn't add up to much on Super Tuesday. I think that voters - despite the efforts of Sen. Ron Johnson - are done with that sideshow.
Amir Girgis (New York)
It’s gonna be completely a different story when the investigation goes into the summer and stretch into the fall !
Les (SW Florida)
@Amir Girgis Nothing now and nothing then. The impeached Trump and robo-senators have plenty to worry about. Plenty.
David H. (Miami Beach, FL)
Is the author a Biden supporter recovering from a long night including festivities? The prospect of Biden as the Dem nominee reminds me of the first act of Rocky IV. Trump is warming up on Bloomberg and waiting before beginning with Biden - so it's not too early and counts towards the election.

Who could have imagined that the confluence of a number of events would take trumpf down?
Thomas Aquinas (Ether)
Mr. Trump will roll Biden.

@Thomas Aquinas Where are his taxes? Why did he lie about Stormy's payments? He is impeached.
stefanie (santa fe nm)
Describing the appointment of Sessions as "this is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States". I thought competency, expertise and integrity should determine cabinet positions but then we are in Trumplandia where it feels more and more like a mafia-run enterprise than the government.
Kelly Grace Smith (Syracuse, NY)
Yes, it was a bad week for Trump. However, we would be wise to be seriously concerned about what he will do as "pay back" for his bad week. We are the ones who must always pay for his bad weeks.
MaxCornise (Washington Heights)
@Kelly Grace Smith Next week looks worse for him. The coronavirus mortality rate continues to climb at an unsettling pace, from 2.3 to 3.8 in less than 10 days. He keeps forgetting that corny old saying “God’s Will be done, not ours”!
Kate (Leesburg, VA)
Reading this with a grin on my face. Not suffering from Corona virus (yet?), but I have a raging case of Schadenfreude.
Independent (the South)
I give Trump credit for getting away with their slander while he does the same things. Nobody asks about Jared and Ivanka's use of private e-mail. Nobody asks about Ivanka's business ties to China. Nobody else could get away without showing his tax returns. After years of criticizing Obama for golf, Trump has done more in three years than Obama in eight years. The list goes on.
JohnP (Watsonville, CA)
The NYT headline says it all, "Wall Street Breaks Out Checkbooks for Biden and Stocks Surge". The Biden surge has given new hope to the 1% who are in a panic over the popularity of Senator Bernie Sanders.
expat (Japan)
Given that his only tactics are lying and demearing his opponents, it hardly matters who is opponent is - they know in advance that they'll have to eother counter or ignore a barrage of lies, conspiracy theories and personal insults. I would like to see the Democratic nominee refuse to even mention him by name, and to deny him a platform by refusing to engage in the embarrassing shams that the media insist on referring to as "debates".
Steve (Santa Cruz)
Biden is getting credit for today's surge on Wall Street. Add that to Trump's horrible, terrible, very bad day.
new conservative (new york, ny)
@Steve no sanders loss is giving the surge to the stock market - one less extreme radical to worry about taxing stock holders to death. When they hear what Biden has planned for new taxes the market will drop again and then rise when its clear Trump will win a second term.
Les (SW Florida)
@new conservative Is cutting taxes and increasing the deficit conservative?
Iced Tea-party (NY)
After Trump’s defeated in November, we’ll have some fun with him.
Dearson (NC)
The bad week Trump is having will probably get much worse as it turns into months. It is doubtful that the coronavirus will disappear anytime soon, and if the experiences of other nations is any indication, some challenging times are ahead. The fact that Trump lied about improving health care and has instead attempted take it from millions of Americans shall come to severely haunt him as the true magnitude of the pandemic is realized.
Blackwater (Seattle)
The more intensely he believes he can control reality -- he even believes he *deserves* to control reality -- then the more intensely angry he must become when reality flicks him on the forehead.
Howard (Chicago)
If Biden got elected in November, his family would more corrupt than Trump's. Biden has nothinng inspire independent votes; listen to his speeach, and find nothing excited. He is even unable to manage his family, how can we trust him to run our country? That Hunter Biden makes me sick.
susan santagata (stamford)
why does Hunter Biden make you sick? Donny Jr. is the sickening son. What does he DO besides hunt & kill endagered animals? Smug, ignorant trust-fund baby, every last one of them. For God's sake, WHY are Trump's kids, son-in-law even holding ANY government positions? Are my taxes going toward any of their salaries?! Just poke my eyes out! Go Joe! Decent, honest & I'm willing to bet he has actually READ our Connstitution. Trump is a 3rd rate game show host. I can't even!!!
Carolyn H (Seattle)
"(The Biden) family would be more corrupt than trump"? So far, all we have is that Hunter Biden, a lawyer who co-founded an international consulting firm, probably traded on his father's name to get on the board of Burisma. Joe was VP during the first couple years, and he represented an alliance of Western countries and the World Bank (if I recall) to force the then-Ukrainian prosecutor to quit. This was because that corrupt prosecutor would NOT investigate Burisma! Contrast that with the trump family. Ivanka traveled to China and secured several patents, far more quickly than usual, just before her father arrived. Eric and Junior have traveled to several countries to pursue business deals for trump holdings. The trump hotel in DC hosts numerous foreign entourages as they come to meet with the president, enriching his coffers. And you don't think all those actions are corrupt? Hunter Biden's appointment had the appearance of a conflict of interest; trump has committed numerous ethical and legal violations. trump = corrupt.
mmk (Silver City, NM)
I doubt Hunter Biden made you sick before Trump introduced you to him. You probably had no idea he existed. lol
Rose M (VA Beach)
I can’t wait to see the Trump-Biden debates. They will definitely be memorable: a senile, corrupt Democrat against a megalomaniac corrupt Republican. How did we get here?
Cathy Moore (Washington, NC)
You’re funny.
Lisa Merullo-Boaz (San Diego)
@Rose M Trump may not agree to debate. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.
Bailey (Washington State)
I've been numb to donboy's buffoonery since the day he placed his hand on the bible and swore to uphold the constitution, something he has yet to do.
Cj (NYC)
This is such nonsense and (as usual) plays into the times narrative that somehow a candidate who was last week the punchline of all political jokes is now somehow the worst fear of trump. There is no empirical evidence that Biden would be a threat to trump in the same way that Sanders—someone who can speak in lucid sentences and actually inspires people—is, yet the times continues the drumbeat (like it did with the Iraq war, like it did with Clinton) to establishment-inevitability as it has been for years. I’m a times subscriber and would be fine with Biden, but enough with the times putting its finger on the scale for the establishment and false equivalence.
Ron (Silverlake)
The thing is, no one has or most likely will show any criminal wrongdoing by Hunter Biden or Joe Biden. It's the fact that they are being "investigated" that Repubs hope will do the damage needed. The power to investigate is the power to destroy, regardless of charges filed or not filed. Republican plan is to keep numerous "investigations" going as long as needed to hurt enthusiasm for Biden as president. Much the same way they did to Hillary. I noticed that after Trump* won in 2016, the calls for "lock her up" pretty much disappeared, which tells me that was the plan all along. Just find something, anything, that can be "investigated" by a corrupt Justice Department/Republican Senate. As others have noted, these are banana republic tactics
Carolyn H (Seattle)
And of course when the DOJ investigation was closed with no charges being filed against her, it was done very quietly.
Bodyman (Santa Cruz, Ca)
I’m actually looking forward to the Republicans making utter fools of themselves investigating Hunter Biden. They will look even more pathetic than they already do.
Steve (Seattle)
"There has long been a disconnect between the way Mr. Trump sees politics and the way his more seasoned advisers do'" He just hired a 23 year old recent college grad to vet employees. He has Kellyanne Conway on the payroll and Mick Mulvaney. Need I say more.
karen (Florida)
What ever happened in Trump's life that makes him so nasty? Sociopaths usually can fake niceness. Not him.
Gustav Aschenbach (Venice)
I would hope that voters can see the inherent bigotry in a strategy that says, “I’ll attract Black people by talking about the criminal justice system.”.
Reader In Wash, DC (Washington, DC)
RE: The president who believes he can control events is confronted by further evidence that he cannot. The president who believes he can control events...Oh brother. No wonder the main steam media earns such disdain from so many. After the DNC sent the "journalists" the copy did they edit it at all or did they just file the story verbatim?
Tucson (AZ)
"Despite his lack of influence..." Not so sure about that -- Trump influenced a Republican relative of mine in SC to vote in the open primary for the Democratic candidate Trump considered easier to beat.
KG (Louisville, KY)
But Trump, who is a very stable genius and has a very good instinct for science, very nearly cured the world of COVID-19 this week with his brilliant suggestion at a meeting with pharmaceutical executives on Monday! Upon hearing that millions have been vaccinated against the flu, Trump asked, "But the same vaccine could not work? You take a solid flu vaccine — you don't think that would have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?" Seriously, I don't like Biden as much as I like Sanders. But I will vote for either and I will pray for an end to the national nightmare that is Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
Bob (Canada)
Please don't think this will last. Trump's minions are getting ready to start Burisma investigations using evidence gathered by Rudy. Keep up the offensive by having the House destroy Rudy's credibility with a Lev public hearing.
Charna (NY)
Trump had one bad week. Most Americans have had over 3 years of bad days because of this president. The horrible tweets, the caging of children, the shredding of the constitution, the incompetence on full display in tackling the Coronavirus, the name calling, the purging of federal employees who are not loyalists, the convicted and indicted officials in the administration, the quid pro quo, the constant lying and I could go on and on but there would never be enough room for my comment are some of Trump’s best hits. When Trump is no longer president that will be the best day ever.
DanielMarcMD (Virginia)
@Charna No, most Americans do NOT feel that way, that America hates Trump. Only the 40% of liberals do. What will your side say if Trump wins re-election? Will you accept the will of the people? Or does that only happen if your side wins?
left coast finch (L.A.)
@Charna You forgot to mention the growing Trump-enabled, supercharged evangelical theocracy and the judiciary now packed with extreme Christian zealots who will be shredding women’s, gay, and black/brown rights, not to mention the environment, for the rest of many of our lives. When Trump is no longer President, that will be the best day ever, for one day. The effects of judges and the Supreme Court is forever for those of us over 50. Nice going, third-party Stein progressives. You created and endorsed this world since you knew full well your vote would create a theocratic judiciary (four white male SCOTUS Catholics are getting ready to ban abortion and, eventually, contraception) and I’ll hold you responsible to my grave.
Kiska (Alaska)
@DanielMarcMD You are delusional if you think 'most' Americans don't feel that way. The overwhelming majority of Americans are disgusted with Trump. And, by the way, you got the 40% figure wrong.
Daniel (Tucson, Arizona)
Trump does not believe he can control events. Why do journalists and politicians keep holding on to views like this? What Trump has done, like many con artists, is choose a messaging strategy that is maximally flexible. He doesn't need to control events because his approach to messaging applies regardless of what the political conditions are. The Trump Singular Messaging Strategy is to always say: "I'm the only one worth listening to. Anyone who criticizes, contradicts or opposes me is not worth listening." Everything Trump says is a recycled version of that exact same singular message. His response to Coronavirus is perfectly aligned that singular messaging strategy that he has always had.
D. DeMarco (Baltimore)
"And they said they would seek to elevate his backing of trade policies like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a deal that originated under President Barack Obama." Unlike Trump, most voters think Obama was just fine and aren't out to erase every single thing he did. Like the Coronavirus - we'd be in much better shape if everything Obama had out in place was still active. But Trump's ego couldn't handle it, so he shut down all the programs and fired the experts and scientist we so desperately need right now. If Biden winds up the nominee and he wasn't your Primary choice, you must ask your self - would Biden be worse than 4 more years of Trump? Hard to see how he could be. If you don't vote for the nominee, you will have cast a vote for Trump. If you stay home, you will have cast a vote for Trump. Vote Democratic in November. Every office, every seat. Holding the House and flipping the Senate is even more important than the Oval Office. We need a huge turnout. Vote.
c harris (Candler, NC)
Citizens United wins. Now the wallets open up. The tech giants are happy. The health insurance industry is happy. Biden has a 40 delegate lead! The corporatists are dancing in the aisles.
Phil Zaleon (Greensboro,NC)
The most appealing part of Biden's Comeback Kid win is the angst it must bring to Trump! The lengths Trump had gone to smear Biden brought forth a successful House Impeachment, indicated the depth of the Republican Congressional complicity in obsequiously denying the obvious truths of the crimes, and came to naught in denying V.P. Biden his likely candidacy. Sorry Donnie, you lose! That many Conservatives and Independents are also loath to see another four years of Trumps baseness, incompetence, and corruption, gives me hope that he will be defeated in November.
Richard Schumacher (The Benighted States of America)
Eh, what bad week? Every week that passes makes it less likely that he'll ever be tried or to go prison for his crimes.
Avi Black (California)
This analysis is misdirected in so very many ways. It’s yet more pontificating about the “state of the race” that runs parallel to the horse race reporting in the news section. (Who CARES how many states each candidate “won” during a primary that’s all about building delegate count?) How many times do you have to be wrong about Trump before you stop even trying to pretend you have a clue? I could make as strong an argument (as several other readers have) that Biden is precisely the opponent Trump wants, and that the “Bernie baiting” is a calculated deflection. I guess controversy is the financial lifeblood of the media, so you’ll keep publishing this drivel day after day. I’ll keep reading it not for any keen insights, but to see what you all put out that may well influence people’s thinking. I certainly hope others see it as no more than the blather it is.
PK2NYT (Sacramento)
@Avi Black You said that “Bernie baiting” is a calculated deflection by Trump. Trump is not good at chess, what he is good at is shouting loudly to distract the opposing player and spectators. Worked in 2016 and but not anymore in 2020 where most people can see through his smoke screens.
Sara (Oakland)
@Avi Black : No one can be sure- and baiting Democrats to get a weak candidate could be Trump's or Putin's sneaky sabotage..but who other than a fierce base believes Sanders would get an Obama-turn -out if nominated? Trump has a fierce 35% and now so does Sanders....oy.
Patrick (Middle America)
@Avi Black No matter what happens with anything, Trump will always say it went exactly how he wanted it to so there is no reason to even pretend to guess what he wants. All he really wants is the optics that he is always right and that he always wins.
NYChap (Chappaqua)
Trump can't control what happens to the Democrats candidates for President but the DNC can and they did. they do not want sanders so they all got together to plan to knock him out of the race. They are off to a good start. They want Joe Biden and they will have him come hell or high water. Once they put him up as their candidate Joe's trouble will start. He has lots of questions about his family and other things to answer. He will undoubtedly be called upon to explain how 5 of his family members became wealthy from what appears to be largess during his time in office as Vice President and before when he was Senator. Of course, the Democrats will not answer any questions regarding what appears to be wholesale largess and use their old response about those accusations being investigated already and that is "old news". However, that will not stop the ads and questions until they are addressed currently during this campaign. There was a book written which detailed the accusations that the Democrats and Joe Biden will not talk about. I can't blame them. The book gets very specific and it may be difficult to respond without lying. There was an article in the NY Post by the author of the book that summarized the accusations. Instead of "shooting the message" these questions will have to be answered. https://nypost.com/2020/01/18/how-five-members-of-joe-bidens-family-got-rich-through-his-connections/
LA (Ray)
@NYChap Thanks for your personal opinions, predictions, and unsubstantiated accusations. Did you by chance note that your post did not contain a single fact, other than a plug for some "book"? BTW: there no requirement that "these questions will have to be answered. " like Trump's daily missives of disinformation your "questions" can also be ignored completely
RS (Missouri)
Only 13% of people 18-29 bothered to show up and vote last night. So much for Bernie having an organization. Believe me Trump is not having a bad week at all. In fact, the longer this thing last the less time the General Election candidate will have on the podium. Like many or all of the people I know in my home town we will ultimately cast a general election vote for Trump but we are allowed to also vote in the primary as a Democrat. We will all show up and probably vote for Warren just so she can peel votes from the other two driving this thing out to a brokered convention. Trumpers know that Donald can easily defeat anyone the Dems put forward this year so we are going to have a little fun with the primary. Have a great day!
hithere (CA)
@RS I'm saddened that you think that the future of this country is something to be toyed with for fun. Unfortunately our country's constitution has been dealt several devastating blows in the past 4 years that undermines the foundation of our democracy. Each of us holds a patriotic duty to defend our constitution, although it seems as though a large percentage of our countrymen are reveling in its downfall. If you would like to learn about constitutional law and the myriad effects of the current administration on how our country will function in the future, I recommend Roman Mars' podcast "What Trump Can Teach Us About Con Law".
GL (Chicago, IL)
@RS "...many or all of the people you know in your hometown" are not a representative sample of the electorate, in Missouri, or nationally.
Jerseytime (Montclair, NJ)
@RS We would expect nothing less from you. You consider yourselves the only "real Americans", despite being grossly outnumbered by us. And that allows you to justify ruling the nation as a minority. Your planned interference in our process only confirms what we already know about Trumpists- The ends justify the means.
r (des moines)
Obama in the cabinet? Maybe as VP? He is sorely missed. Even though he has done his part and probably wants to stay away from politics, it could be a good one-weekend story just to troll Trump.
ernieh1 (New York)
"For Mr. Trump...it has been a week of confronting the fact that almost nothing is in his control right now." Least of all his own mind. More and more he is becoming a creature of his own fantasies, delusions, prejudices and conspiracy theories fed to him by Faux News. His latest is that Obama is to be blamed for not being ready for the coronavirus, despite the fact that Trump himself gutted the CDC in 2018 for "budgetary reasons," and disbanded the White House bureau in charge of pandemic preparedness.
Jane (Illinois)
I worry that trump will attack Joe Biden thru his son, Hunter, and deplete Joe’s morale. Trump has no qualms about hurting anyone or their children. I hope that joe Biden and/or Bloomberg will be strong enough to fight Trump’s nastiness with their own. Bloomberg can do it—hope Biden lets him do it. Traditionally, Democrats try for the high road—we have to get down in the dirt this time.
Kiska (Alaska)
@Jane I agree. Every time Trump says something about Hunter Biden, someone needs to start playing a nonstop loop of Don Jr, Ivanka and Jared being the clueless, entitled twits they are. With numbers showing how much they've made off the WH. I would tear his children apart.
Linda Miilu (Chico, CA)
@Kiska Don, Jr. sitting with dead endangered species, courtesy of a bribed game preserve guard. Ivanka with her vacant eyes, that strange halting speaking pattern, and her China patents for knockoffs. Jared in Peru, then Israel, as some kind of "business failure/diplomat".
joe (burlington, vt)
it matters not. what matters is how many people the democratic nominee can motivate to get out and vote
Scott K (Atlanta)
It’s amazing how Russians spend a couple hundred thousand with some low resolution online media ads and somehow Democrats claim this is how Trump got elected and he is accused of collusion. But Bloomberg who openly spends $500MM can’t even buy 50 delegates. What is wrong with this picture? What matters is how Democrats and the main stream media succeed or don’t succeed in manipulating the delegates and voters. In the case of Clinton, they failed. In the case of Biden, they successfully manipulated Biden back into contention. Let’s see if they manipulate him into the Presidency and put Washington “Establishment” back into power.
Raj (MD)
At this point, I want this president gone. Does not not matter who he runs against. Just like I found on the internet somewhere, VOTE BLUE, NO MATTER WHO.
Eugene Debs (Denver)
If Biden becomes the Democratic candidate, that is the end. Vote for a right-winger, or a right-winger. Excited about an actual progressive winning the nomination in Sanders, then descending into hell as another rightie Democrat vs. a mobster is presented as the choice. Suicide by voting booth. That is not a choice, that is a nightmare.
Will (UK)
@Eugene Debs Equating the two can ONLY come from someone not paying attention for 3 years. From a passionate Warren supporter.
Eugene Debs (Denver)
@Will Biden is anti-choice on abortion, supports privatizing Social Security, opposes universal health care and voted for the Iraq war. Does that sound like a progressive person to you? It sounds like a Republican to me. I pay very close attention. Do you?
Gritty (Columbus)
Can't wait until traitor Trump is an inmate in the NY state prison system.
Sam (San Jose, CA)
Bad week? It's going to be a bad year and bad rest of his life for this criminal thug once his "presidential immunity" is over and his white collar crimes catch up with him!
Deutschmann (Midwest)
“[A] possible conspiracy between the president’s 2016 campaign and Russian officials.” If we ever get rid of the corrupt partisan hacks at the Justice Department, it won’t take long to discover that there was an actual conspiracy and that Trump should rot in prison for it.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
More Trump LIes: "Virus is Obama's fault." the TRUTH: "The top White House official responsible for leading the U.S. response in the event of a deadly pandemic has left the administration, and the global health security team he oversaw has been disbanded under a reorganization by national security adviser John Bolton." Washington Post and others. May 10, 2018
JW (New York)
Biden will be sure to list what was bad this week for Trump, if he remembers what they were ... or the NY Times can list what they actually were. Coronavirus? The US still has a limited number of infections compared to China and Europe thanks to Trump ordering a quarantine on non-citizens back in January as soon as a "flu" of some sort was reported in an obscure Chinese city. You remember: when Biden, the Democrats, and various UN honchos derided him for supposed xenophobia, racism and over-reaction that would be counterproductive? Compare that to the beloved Obama administration's deft response in 2009 in the face of Swine Flu. After 20,000 Americans hospitalized and over 1000 had died, Obama & Joe finally got around to declaring a national emergency. Needless to say, the NY Times wasn't as beside itself as it is now with Trump. Nor were WaPo, CNN, MSNBC and the rest of the usual crowd, for that matter. The Stock Market? Well, the venerable Paul Krugman (honorary recipient of the Nobel Prize for TDS) proudly declared the other day "Dow 25,000!" I suppose finally feeling vindicated after he fell on his face the day Trump was elected predicting a complete market and economic meltdown (no matter celebrating the loss of trillions of dollars in the average person's 401(k) -- whatever it takes to take down Trump, of course). Too bad for Paul and the NY Times it's back to 27,091. !!!! To paraphrase Krugman. Any investor should know you fade whatever Krugman says.
Ed Bur (Williamsburg)
@JW I stopped paying any attention to the Nobel Laureate several years ago. My time was too valuable.
Asher Fried (Croton-on-Hudson NY)
Biden wins...stock market soars ... that has Trump worried.
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
Biden is not making a comeback. He is simply winning when The NY Times called Bernie as unstoppable as a runaway train (their words) and, as often as not, got it wrong by trying to do what? Make headlines? Hand the election to Bernie? Sell papers? Or all three? Well, at least we've gotten AOC off the front page for a day or two. I can finally digest my food. Is it too early for a Scotch, or too late?
Rachel Quesnel (ontario,canada)
Some may feel this comment inappropriate, to me it would be nice to know if Trump though we know he does not read even realizes the jabs given to him, anyways to my comment, Yesterday I was listening to Joe Biden speak when Pete Buttigieg announced his support and at that time Mr. Biden commented that Pete reminded him of Beau, in a way of gentleness, strength and how he comported himself in life, this is not pervadum but basically the jist of the comment, what struck most was that Joe Biden apologized for talking so much about Beau, he stated that every morning when he got up he would ask if he made Beau Proud, well Mr. Biden, last night's victory proves that you make him proud on a daily basis, Beau is with you in spirit and guides your heart as are two of your friends the Honorable John McCain, and the Honorable Elijah Cummins, so we see how Trump is dealing with Coronavirus, with the Department of Justice, with his arrogance and insecurities, and you look at his family, no one will ever ask if his children are proud of him because first they must be proud of themselves and they are too self-centered to be that, so Trump make no mistake when your just rewards come and they will, no one will remember you and yours as Honorable or Righteous, that is reserved for those who have served their country with Honor, the only word associated with you and yours is CORRUPT, and lets add Pence, McConnell, Graham, Gaetz, Jordan, to name a few who have lost the title of Honorable
Colby Hawkins (Brooklyn)
Are you joking? If Biden wins, Trump is a shoo-in. Trump will make him look like the coot that he is in the debates.
Richard K. (Evanston iL)
The article said Trump did not “deliver reassurances” on Covid. What should he have said? What would have garnered NYT praise?
Ron (California)
Maybe he could have said three months ago that we are pulling out all stops to develop reliable test kits so we can isolate infected people. Instead three months later he blamed Obama for lack of test kits .
DanielMarcMD (Virginia)
This is the most partisan non-opinion piece I’ve read in the 5y I’ve read the Times. This is journalism? No wonder the general public rates the media reliability and trust at the bottom, with Congress.
MLS (Morristown, NJ)
@DanielMarcMD surprised you still read if you think it's so bad. I think that the Times is doing just fine. Not so sure that people rate Fox News very highly.
Barb (Santa Fe)
So funny....the stock market bounced back because Biden took a slim lead in the Democratic primary?!?! Nah...it had more to do with the realization that this virus is nothing but a engendered, exaggerated, hyped-up nothing. Biden wasn’t a good candidate the last two times he ran for President and obvious to all, but the NYTimes and the swamp, he is far less qualified this time around. But if it makes you feel better, you just keep on walking around with no clothes on and we’ll just keep on saying what fine threads you wear....
MLS (Morristown, NJ)
@Barb scary isn't it that Biden's win can move the market so well. People must be sick of trump and the do-nothing Senate Republicans. I'm thinking Change has a lot to do with it. Many of us are trying to bring this country together.
Kiska (Alaska)
@Barb "But if it makes you feel better, you just keep on walking around with no clothes on and we’ll just keep on saying what fine threads you wear...." That's pretty funny, coming from a Trumper.
GARRY (SUMMERFIELD,FL)
DUMP TRUMP. It will be a short drop. He didn't have a majority vote last time and has done nothing to expand his minority base. The Democrats that defected because of their dislike for Hillary, regretted it and will return after they see what they got. LOL!!!! Biden's camp will stay focused in the states HRC lost by a slim margin. DUMP TRUMP and let the prosecutors LOCK HIM UP when he is a private citizen again.
Fred Rick (CT)
Well...good thing the NYT continues in the tradition of responsible journalism and never stoops to assigning meaning to events that always fit a preferred political slant. (sarcasm) This is an embarrassing piece, more appropriate for an obscure liberal arts university newspaper where children write whatever they think their audience might like to hear, without any adult editorial oversight. Wow.
macindigo (San Francisco Bay Area)
Americans will get what they deserve if Biden is the nominee... 4 more years of status quo most probably under Trump. And don't come asking for my independent vote. Democrats have said that Bernie is not a Democrat and therefore shouldn't be the nominee. Well, I'm not a Democrat either so why would I vote for their candidate? Bernie 2020
Paula (Carlisle, PA)
@macindigo last time I checked San Francisco is in America. So what you are saying is that you are okay with Trump being re-elected and likely achieving a super conservative majority on the Supreme Court, an additional four year setback on addressing climate change, and further setbacks for our nation’s most vulnerable? Go ahead, take your vote and go home, but know that a Trump re-election and everything that comes with him is on you too!
macindigo (San Francisco Bay Area)
@Paula It's really quite simple. If Democrats want the independent vote then all that they need to do is nominate Bernie. If they won't do that then that sends a clear signal to progressives of where they stand with Democrats. Particularly when poll after poll shows that Bernie would prevail over Trump. Those same polls do not show Biden winning against Trump..
EJ (Nes Ziona)
Seen from afar, and taking into account the dynamics of what has happened to the left in the past years in Europe and Israel, I think that Sanders is the right choice. Socialists/Labour parties have but disappeared because they traded ideology for trade. Because they thought they could beat the right at its own game of economic liberalism. Trump has a clear message. A disruptive, destructive one, but clear. Against that a clear alternative, 180 degrees turn is needed. Biden is great, but his positions on the economy, welfare, taxes, trade agreements, foreign policies are can't beat Trumps'. It is not only because I like them but I think Sanders has it right. Lessons from other places should be heard, even in America, even if they require translation.
Rich (mn)
Doesn't it trouble Sanders supporters that Trump would rather run against him rather than Biden?
Jean Coqtail (Studio City, CA)
It remains to be seen whether, assuming Biden gets the nomination, Sanders can make Trump's defeat more important than his own. He will either be the Ralph Nader of 2020, or instrumental in saving the republic from further damage inflicted by the incumbent. He could be the difference maker, alongside Michael Bloomberg, making sure to get the vote out, since it is numbers and only numbers that can defeat a party that has, by hook and crook, seized the levers of power.
Cj (NYC)
OR.... he could be a more potent weapon against trump. Why is it assumed that the Clinton playbook from 2016 would work this year where it didn’t four years ago.
Kenneth J. Dillon (Washington, D.C.)
Advice for Elizabeth Warren: 1. You are the best candidate. Your competitors are too old to be president. You are healthy, fit, and sharp. 2. You are the unity candidate of a party that badly needs a unity candidate to beat Trump. Nominating either of your competitors would risk a disastrous defection of part of the party. 3. The voting and delegate totals of Super Tuesday are only one part of the picture. Another very important part is that three of your toughest competitors have withdrawn. 4. Their withdrawal has made you the only female candidate, the only relatively youthful candidate, and the most articulate candidate. All three can attract voters to you. 5. Super Tuesday occurred before voters could assess the impact of the new configuration of the race. As the campaign progresses, you are more likely to win votes from Democrats who have thought more carefully through their options or have paid more attention to your personal appeal. 6. As the unity candidate of the Democratic Party, you can attract party leaders and voters who increasingly perceive the danger of choosing either of your competitors. Meanwhile, your competitors will surely attack each other. You, as the unity candidate, can remain above the fray, appealing to voters with your vision and your benign role as unifier. 7. The 3 withdrawals give you Implicit Momentum. As each state votes, that can turn into votes, delegates, and negotiated victory at the convention.
Will (UK)
@Kenneth J. Dillon Brilliant - she's the best by a long way and could bring both factions together. However, there is a fatal flaw. Male egos and she appears (and is) too smart. Sad.

I think the House should open an investigation into nepotism in the Trump Administration and probe how the Trump children and Jared have benefited from their family ties to the president.

Kamala can start warming up in the bullpen. She’ll be terrific in the second seat this year (and set up a historic run in ‘24 or ‘28).

On top of that the US currently has the second highest death rate in the world regarding Corona.
Mullingitover (Pennsylvania)
This president asked pharmaceutical executives, in all seriousness, if vaccines for one microbe would work against a totally different microbe. The people around the table just said, "No." Pence looked on inscrutably. These two, ladies and gentlemen, are in charge of keeping us as safe as possible in the face of this deadly outbreak. Why would any non-suicidal human being cast a vote for them?
Edd (Kentucky)
Biden is the option to get out the traditional Dem voters, and to appeal to the undecided voters on the fence and in the middle. But he is certainly a candidate with liabilities....age, memory, foot in mouth disease, historical votes and Hunter. Of course his opponent has liabilities too, but the opponent has learned how to make his loyal followers blind to his faults. Can Biden overcome his own weaknesses, and wound DJT via his many vulnerabilities. Only time will tell.
kirk (montana)
The pro-Biden vote is really a strong anti-Trump and republican party vote. The 'trump tweets' in this article point to the obvious disorganized thinking that trump has and is likely one of the many reasons for voter concern. The Democrats will not get complacent this November. There will be a massive voter turnout that will seal the fate of the republican-whig party.
Rose Anne (Chicago, IL)
As a Sanders supporter, I would prefer Bloomberg to Biden. Prefer competence, if Wall Street is taking charge.
Bhaskar (Dallas, TX)
The market loves Trump, the businessman. And the market loved Biden's win. Put (2) and (2) together, the market knows Trump will trounce Biden. The market knows best.

@Bhaskar the market doesn't vote.

President Trump wanted to fight against the Fidel's friend, but the situation is changing with the last results.

I guess Trump is going to have to go back to asking foreigners for help in defeating Biden. And he thought that was finished when the Republicans blessed him on it.
DJS (New York)
"For Mr. Trump, whose belief in his own ability to shape external events is a source of comfort, it now means confronting a moment when almost nothing is in his control." That statement is predicated on the false belief that delusional individuals modify their beliefs when presented with evidence that their beliefs are tase. Delusions are fixed beliefs. That is the reason that Trump tweet that the stock market had a very good day, ,right after the market plunged. Evidence is not going to penetrate Trump's delusions, anymore than evidence will change the belief of any other delusional individual. This is the man who referred to the phone call with President Zelensky as "perfect", who tweeted that the market had a good day right after the market plunged, and who thinks that his administration is doing an A+++ job regarding Coronavirus, for starters. Nothing will change Trump's delusions. What voters can due is to remove this corrupt, narcissistic, delusional, evil President from office, by voting for the Democratic nominee as if our lives depend on it, for our lives do depend on it. Trump has endangered the lives of every American by cutting funding to the CDC, removing the individual who was in charge of addressing pandemics, and dismantling everything that had been set in place to prepare the United States for a pandemic such as coronavirus. Eleven people are dead in the U.S. of coronavirus ,and the is just the beginning.
Rob K. (NYC)
Biden must still consolidate his gains, but more to the point, he must offer a little more than relief from the Trumpet. Even when that loud horn is gone we will still need to address the failings of globalization, while pandemics and Nature herself force us to recognize once and for all that it's one planet now and we're all in this together. War seems obsolete insofar as not one of them has really worked out for America in a while, and artificial intelligence is on its way to disrupt things in ways we can only guess at. Our government is there to protect us, but from what or from whom? Foreign governments? Terrorists? Giant monopolies? And who knows if our data, that invaluable asset, belongs to those who keep it now or we the citizens? So there's a lot to be done, and Biden will need some very unusual people to make it all happen here in the roaring, soaring, but hopefully boring 20's.
Wait Still (Earth)
Who actually thinks Trump is fearful of running against Biden who can’t speak a sentence without dementia being question. Trump is salivating at the thought of getting to use all Rudy’s Burisma info. I am sure he lamented all that juicy dirt going to waste. No need for Trump to worry about the young turning out for geriatric Biden the establishment corporate candidate, they won’t and Trump knows it. Only the DNC seem not to know it or more likely they just don’t care as long as it stops Bernie. They prefer a loss with Biden than a win with Bernie. Truly tragic for America !

@Olivia that will be the day America dies.
Angela Minton (Oklahoma)
@Jaleh. The difference between Sanders and Trump is that Sanders has spent his life doing what he believes is best for the country whereas Trump’s career has revolved around doing what is best for himself. Plus you have to admit—you may not like what Bernie has to say but you know he is telling the truth. Maybe both are nuts—but only one is psychotic.

In all honesty, I couldn't be happier whenever it's reported that Prez Trump (more popularly known as "The Monster" among my family, friends and associates) has a bad day. I'll dance for joy when when it's reported he's had an "awful day". I have no use for that 'creature' inhabiting our Nation's White House.
RGV (Boston)
The authors of this opinion piece are completely out to lunch. Trump achieved precisely what he wanted - Biden as the Democrat nominee. Trump will completely and easily destroy him before the first debates. Biden has been in Washington for 45 years and has accomplished absolutely nothing for the American people (except Hunter). He is the poster child of a swamp creature.
Robert Roth (NYC)
Trump can't even do wrong right.
Will Tosee (Chicago, IL)
Pretty bad. The guy who will beat him in the general just became the Dem frontrunner.
Errol (Medford OR)
Trump may have had a bad week, but I don't think Biden's comeback added to his difficulties. This is Trump's election to lose, not any Democrat's election to win. I am very much relieved to be rid of Sanders as a viable candidate. I am relieved because I think there is a substantial possibility that Trump will lose the election regardless who the Democrat nominee is.....and I detest the thought of Sanders becoming president. But no Democrat will beat Trump. What will beat Trump is if the economy turns very bad or if this China virus rages and many people start dying (or both, which is the likely result if the China virus rages here). In that case, whomever is opposing Trump will win. On the other hand, if the economy holds and the China virus does not rage in the US, then Trump is sure to win re-election regardless who the Democrat nominee is.
Livonian (Los Angeles)
@Errol Exactly correct.
Iced Tea-party (NY)
@Errol Do you think this foul snail of a man, this trump, can keep moving after it’s been crushed?

@Iced Tea-party I would respond to your question but I do not understand it. What do you mean can Trump "keep moving after its been crushed"? What do you mean by "keep moving" and by "its been crushed"?

None of this matters to his base. None. They have already bought his campaign of disinformation about Hunter Biden. They believe him when he says he will always protect pre-existing conditions even though Republicans are right now challenging that law in the Supreme Court. He tells them democrats will take away their healthcare and they believe him. They will buy whatever he sells them.

Eventually, the NYTvirus contagion will recede and Trump will rebound to win a smashing victory in the next Presidential election. Schumer will be arrested for threatening Supreme court justices and Hunter Biden will end up in prison on an assortment of charges. That is all.

It’s not all, though. Things are complicated and nuanced, and our solutions to problems have to be able to take those complexities and nuances into account. Oversimplifying these complex problems won’t make for better solutions, as much as we want them to. A desire for simple solutions doesn’t change the nature of the problem.

To the so-called moderate ‘left’: please stop buying what is being sold to you. The establishment ‘left’ has overseen the most unequal distribution of wealth in history. It has voted to repeal the separations between commercial and investment banking. It has supported legislation making it more difficult for working families to discharge credit card debt in bankruptcy. It has voted for the Iraq war. Is this what you thought they were campaigning for? Is this what aligns with your priorities? To the people who can’t draw their attention away from Donald Trump: please stop engaging with the convenient fiction that he represents all that is evil. Our country is sick, and it’s not because of Donald Trump. But that narrative does conveniently help the truly powerful malign interests in our country. Just a friendly reminder in case you have been seduced, again, by the politicians and the media, and perhaps the (maybe secret) perception that the moderate ‘left’ will be better for your 401k.

Maybe Trump failed so far, generally or with Super Tuesday, to create fractures in the Democratic race no matter what his distractions and blathering in public or Twitter have been. For the most part it's to always have the spotlight on him. Nothing more, nothing less. But we who want to throw him out of office, an office he was never deserving of or qualified for, should not forget for a minute. There's a whole battalion of Trump henchmen the likes of Roger Stone or Rudy Giuliani who will stop at nothing, for whom no dirty trick or disgusting smear, or fake komprimat is too low or beneath them to use to try to win the election for Trump. As election day approaches, there will be these modern day barbarians at "the gate". In these trying times for the country, my hope is decency will make its stand. Sayonara Barre, Mulvaney, Pompeo, Pence, and Trump.
Truth2013 (AZ)
President "15,000 lies Trump" (or "lying Trump" for short) has no control over any events other than those he creates himself. As for Twitter and Facebook, both should be regulated to control and/or flag blatant political lying, false information and conspiracy theories. And if it's too hard to figure out which information is false, I'd suggest a "may be false" flag.
Climate Change (CA)
Trump couldn’t control bankruptcy of pretty much everything he started. Those were to a large extent, in his control. Why are we even talking about things that are not in his control? Do we need more evidence of his incompetence?
F1Driver (Los Angeles)
Trump's bad week? None of the Democratic candidates represent a threat to Trump dominance. Biden will be built up. The media will feverishly dress Biden with the finest silk and place a crown too big for his head. And in the process, Biden's faux pas will be excused, handlers, political groupies and members of the media will work overtime, swallow hard and contort logic and reason to excruciating positions. Is all the undignified behavior members of the press will exhibit until the Presidential election? Of course it is! Considering members of the media family include academia and well paid positions in government agencies are at risk, dignity and self respect are expendable. For these people there are no moral shortcomings rationalizations, pop-psychology and self help books can't fix. A case in point the title of this article. cringe worthy.

Neither millions of dollars, nor the greatest GOTV campaign in the world (which Trump doesn't have, except for the rallies) can deliver the feeling of simple human connection, like that of Jim Clyburn's statement, "My friend, and my late wife's great friend, Joe Biden." I think the African American electorate has just told Trump what he can do with his vile sliming of the Biden family. And with his "African American voter outreach."

I loathe Donald tRrump. He epitomizes all of the worst things in our country and world. But he will trounce Joe Biden if Biden is the Democrats' nominee. As anyone with an ounce of sense should have learned no later than November 2016, polling data and political prognistications by 'experts' are essentially worthless these days. What will matter is that Biden will be perceived, to some degree correctly, as a somewhat dull-minded naif in a knife fight with a thug. And there are lots of people in this country who will just lap that up. If you don't believe, just watch an MMA match for thirty seconds.

In these days of trigger warnings, it’s as if reading the paper needs a giant one above the daily headlines— maybe something like, “Trigger warning: the following article may contain triggering and/or offensive material to anyone who has a mind, a sense of the most elementary morals and ethics, a heart, or believes that there is truth in the world.” While parts of this article lifted, momentarily, my hopes and joy, in the end there was the realization that nothing seems able to permanently damage the insane ego of the narcissist with whom we are dealing. I am sure there are others out there who masochistically peek at his tweets—one has to scratch their head and wonder who does this, who sits in the White House and lobs adolescent put downs at people running for office; who does this and still enjoys the smallest bit of respect? How is it that his supporters can see these things and not say to themselves and each other, “this guy is a moron.” And then there is the ENTIRE Republican Party swooning over their captor, a massive example of Stockholm Syndrome afflicting a political party. Sure, this country has been the Dollar General for years— the boil has finally emerged on the face of it. Is this our mirror? All of our mirror? Weren’t we supposed to take to the streets after the sham of the senate’s behavior during impeachment? What are we doing? What am I doing writing this? Where are our souls? Or did we trade them in for flu shots? It’s HARD to believe, it’s hard.

This is article is good propaganda. Any president that gets handed a problem, like the Covid-19 epidemic, is going to have a bad week. He is expected to respond perfectly, as defined by political enemies, to a fast changing situation. The stock market blowing up is expected, markets throw tantrums all the time. This one is extra exciting and would be beyond the control of any president. The claim that Biden winning the Tuesday primaries caused the markets to rise on Wednesday only exposes that the authors haven't paid attention to the market whipsawing recently. If they are going to claim Biden saved the stock market, I am claiming President Trump won WWII. Though we all know both claims are baloney. In my redneck part of the world, people are going about their lives despite the Covid-19 outbreak and the primaries. So far people are buying extra staples and hand sanitizer just in case. It may come as a shock, but people are coping in defiance of this analysis. We are a surly people. That Biden winning the Texas primary somehow proves Trump is cluelessly doomed is absurd. Some Democrat was going to win that primary, a detail I am quite sure Trump gets. As for the Session tweet, yawn. Trump has a thin skin – not news . People with unhealthy obsessions analyze these like mandarins did the emperor’s poop. I am pretty sure nobody learned a thing. I could go but nobody cares about such brilliance. We are busy trying to buy hand sanitizer. P.S. Trump is going to win. Prepare.

This "news analysis" fails to account for betting markets, which show very little deterioration in Trump's chances of winning the presidency. Biden may appeal to a wider audience than Bernie, but we have peace and prosperity, unemployment at or near record lows, and wages at the bottom increasing much faster than at the top. We signed trade deals with China and Mexico, and a peace agreement with the Taliban. We are bringing our troops home. The CDC's response to covid 19 has been quite good, and we have fewer autochthanous U.S. cases than a single cruise ship. It's all that vs. Trump's personality. Most regular people want results Voting based on personality is mostly for the ivory tower, the young, and single suburban women.
RN (Ann Arbor, MI)
@rick The trade deal with Mexico (and Canada) is basically just NAFTA with a new name. The trade deal with China is too little, too late. Farmers have lost much of the Chinese market and the new deal is more about no new tariffs. The old tariffs will remain until Sept. Wages are still going up for the top earners and are stagnant for the lower wage earners: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/08/07/for-most-us-workers-real-wages-have-barely-budged-for-decades/ The CDC's response to the coronavirus may be good - but that is in spite of Trump, not because of him. Trump has repeatedly proposed cuts to the CDC and NIH budgets. Congress has ignored those proposals. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/feb/28/michael-bloomberg/did-donald-trump-fire-pandemic-officials-defund-cd Trump will handle this the way he managed his businesses, he will fail bigly.

okay, so we can blame trump for the coronavirus, and also the indecision and ineptitude of the democrats on trump. The stock market seems to be being fairly well considering the background of the coronavirus and it exceeded its slope and was due for a correction. Dream on, Trump will trash Biden fairly easily. We also now have much more evidence that polls of democrats are largely meaningless. There is a good chance Trump has a wide lead over both Biden and Bernie in a general election among real voters. Vote for Bernie, and he should run as a third party candidate if the democrats do not give him the nomination.

Though Trump will never relent in his attacks of Biden in the weeks and months to come, it may well turn out that the more Trump pulls his "Hunter" punches, the more people will sense his fear of losing and flock to Biden. People are growing weary of Trump's schtik and would like to see him lose his power and his immunity from the law. Go Biden go!
The Night They Raided... (MA)
@Alan B “...the more Trump pulls his “Hunter” punches...” I understand that by pull, you mean actually do. Like “the more he pulls these stunts”. However, to use it with “punches” conjures “pull your punches”, which means “eases up”. I’m assuming that’s not what you meant.
Alan B (Baltimore)
@The Night They Raided... Indeed, you are absolutely correct in your assumption! Thank you for noting the error in my usage.

Biden supporters - Please understand that when someone leaves a comment saying that they are a Bernie supporter who will support Trump over Biden, there is a 90% chance that person is in the employment of the Russian government or the Republican Party. Don’t take the bait.
Frunobulax (Chicago)
Biden, if nominated, will be the weakest Democratic Presidential candidate since Dukakis, quite a bit less formidable than Hilary Clinton, so the notion that Republicans have something to fear is fantasy. That one might prefer to run against Bernie does not make Biden a strong opponent. The market rally was a sigh of relief in part that Bernie and the odds of Medicare-for-all sank. Biden himself certainly had nothing to do with it.
Wally (Toronto)
It seems likely that Joe Biden will be the Democratic choice to run against Trump in the fall. How will Trump attack him?How will Biden respond? And what will be the impact on their respective supporters and undecided voters? Having defeated impeachment, Trump will feel free to return to the dirt he has Giuliani digging up on Hunter Biden's lucrative participation on Burisma's board and his bogus claim that VP Biden was trying to protect his son by demanding the dismissal of the corrupt Ukrainian prosecutor. Neither Biden seems willing to discuss these issues in public. Trump will force them to, or else he'll use Joe Biden's refusal against him. After watching Trump smear Hilary Clinton for her email mistakes, relishing chants of "Lock her up!" at his campaign rallies, you would think Democrats would be concerned about how their favoured candidate will deal with this attack. He has certainly not handled it well thus far. Grimacing avoidance of this issue will not work in the fall.

This paragraph. Shockingly, about how a United States “president” is handling Job #1: handling a potential panic driven by a mystery virus, potential pandemic, health and death. And before this week as well! Trump has had bad weeks for some time (all time?). Trump just refuses to learn the error of his ways and continues the type of activity that keeps giving him bad weeks. So. In the present and future ... Trump is facing criminal charges if he does not win the WH for a second term -- remember that. Caring people with inclusive public agendas designed to keep America and Americans in a position to thrive (not be beaten down) -- from Mueller&Team, Pelosi&Team, Schumer&Team ... and now Biden&Team (thanks to Clyburn&Team, Buttegieg&Team, Klobuchar&Team, and Bloomberg&Team) -- to the millions of voters who stood in line "as long as it takes" in order to vote ... are the types of human endeavor and enlightenment needed in this otherwise dark world. Cheers to every one of them.

Every Trump week is a bad week. Trump's an angry, selfish, paranoid guy. All he's done since he assumed office is campaign, He has no clue how to govern. I hope this groundswell for Biden scared his socks off. The coronavirus looks like an advancing nightmare. Trump isn't equipped to deal with it and dismantled parts of the government that were set up to manage our response to epidemics. People will die because of his incompetence and foolishness. It's hard to see how things are going to get better for Trump in the next 9 months. One thing is sure. Trump doesn't deserve to be president. He's never bothered to do his job. Trump was unprepared but he had a choice about that. Hire people who are competent and trustworthy and let them help you. Learn on the job and get better or else be satisfied that you're incompetent and ignorant. He chose wrong.

Trump is so arrogant and convinced he is SO much smarter than everyone else, he thinks he can manipulate non Trump-thralls the way he can manipulate his Trump-thralls, with the same kind of rough, clumsy ham-handedness. So he thought he could EASILY manipulate the Democratic voters to pick HIS preferred opponent / punching bag. He has obviously been a LOSER at that effort! LOL! Nixon was far better at it, far more clever. Nixon was TERRIFIED of Edmund Muskie in 1972 and came up with a clever, devious, and effective scheme to discredit Muskie and get him out of the race so he could face McGovern. It worked and Nixon never paid a price for it. No, it was the paranoia and arrogance that led him to Watergate, that undid him, not the successful dirty tricks that rid him of Muskie. So let Trump have his horrible week, and may the weeks ahead get worse and worse until he loses on November 3rd!

Trump got Kim to give up his nukes, took care of Syria and Afghanistan and the impassion between Bibi and the Muslim world, gave Rush a cigar. He is the evangels deity. He can't miss.
Christy (WA)
I read these comments and have to wonder. Do they really think the unstable moron who cancelled the Iran nuclear deal -- you know, the one that would have delayed the mullahs getting a nuclear bomb for at least 15 years -- thus allowing them to resume producing enough fissile fuel for a bomb, which they now have, is better than getting a decent old senator from Delaware into the White House? How many MAGA-hatted idiots are out there in Trump's la la land?
Kiska (Alaska)
@Christy I saw a picture of one yesterday that had MAGA and a *picture of Trump* TATTOOED on his arm. Big, too. I couldn't believe it. Who in their right mind...?
J.T. M. (Fort Washington, PA)
Hey Trump! What r u smiling at! U R going to get beat BAD in November!!!!😁U R the worst president in the history of the universe!!! So corrupt, so smug, so arrogant, so ignorant of our country's history and of our Constitution. Don't put on that imperious face like you have wisdom and you know what to do when you stand behind your fearful healthcare coronavirus puppet experts. They look like they are afraid you are going to abuse them. Could a human being be any worse than u? Maybe Jeffery Dahmer is worse than u , but I wouldn't bet on it.
Anne (St. Louis)
Oops! Stock market up more than 1,100points and another good pre-emptive day re: Corona Virus. Another botched NYT anti Trump story.
Fred (GA)
@Anne But just how much has it lost that the 1100 points did not cover? Nice spin!
J.T. M. (Fort Washington, PA)
@Anne Wait til earnings get whacked when no one can go to restaurants or have business meetings - causing a recession! Stocks down 40% - 60%
The Hawk (Arizona)
Biden it is, and that is not a bad thing. He has a distinguished career and comes from a humble background. His heart is in the right place. Now is the time to build a strong coalition around him. This election should be a team effort because that will work best and it will knock Trump out. Send all the candidates and other high profile surrogates to run events all around the country.
Richard Phelps (Flagstaff, AZ)
Yes, Trump's re-election prospects may have dimmed slightly with recent events, especially with his inability to provide adequate leadership during concerns about the spread of the corona virus. But the fact that November 3rd is still eight months away means we all need to still be concerned what may happen on that day. With full support of the Republican party and a voter base of support greater than 40 percent there is still a very real threat that he could spend another four years in the White House.
La Rana (NYC)
I don't believe that Biden's surge adds to Trump's bad week. To the contrary. I think it is misleading to suggest so. Biden did not all of a sudden become a viable or better candidate. He got a lot of help from the Democratic establishment and no can easily suspect with the intervention of Obama himself. As a candidate he has the same hurdles to overcome he had last week. Or every other time he run for president and lost. And a long, long record with questionable and controversial votes. It is a pick that will demoralize democrats and mobilize Trump's base. Bernie Sanders is by far a sounder candidate to back. I hope, he will prevail in the end.
Paul G (Portland OR)
Trump voters equate Biden with HRC and Obama, and will be circling their wagons in response. Biden will gain nothing by almost defeating Bernie. And it ain’t over til you know who sings. Go Bernie!!!!
Jagdeer Haleed (New York)
Ofcourse they are rigging the elections against Sanders. Elizabeth Warren is under the imperius curse of the DNC and doing their bidding by not conceding defeat. She will stay to bleed Sanders off of his votes while other nominees let their votes coalesce in with Biden. They will do until the end and then say that Bernie didn't win enough delegates and therefore has to be stopped.
Ran (NYC)
Trump’s “inquiries” about Biden got him impeached and now that his nomination is all but a far gone conclusion , his chances of getting re-elected are practically zilch. His erratic temper tantrums are definitely going to increase uncontrollably and he’ll become more dangerous than ever. The GOP should do the right thing and make it clear for Trump that it’s time for him to resign and if he doesn’t they could use the 25th amendment to force him out, for the good of the country and the world.
Joseph John Amato (NYC)
Being President of the U.S.A. requires to deal with reality politics and embrace the best favorable alternatives that will please the rational of the our collective interest to pursue the health of all interest and with a recording to the historical records. Every President takes his understanding in concert with his selective advisers and then seek to give remedies as needed. All is well when our selective understandings are truthful and with discourse to the political factoring that is as it is - by the clock of destiny.
McEnglish (Placerville)
Every week is a bad week for the Impeached One. And every week he is in office is a disaster for our nation. One thing the Biden resurgence says: this election is about removing trump.
David Fairbanks (Reno Nevada)
Familiarity breeds contempt. Mr. Trump has revealed himself to be a vulgar impulsive loudmouth who prefers schoolyard fights over running the country. Most people are tired of him and dread four more years of bad behavior. Mr. Biden will be a quiet unassuming president. The last gasp of the Baby Boomers. 2024 will likely be a generational wave election, long over due..
Ben (Florida)
My assessment too.
M (CA)
The Dow is up over 1,100 points. Biden is a weak candidate. Trump is more popular than ever.
RN (Ann Arbor, MI)
@M Trump's popularity is around 42% now. Wow, so high. Also, he's less popular than any other president in the past 60 years at this point in his presidency.
Panthiest (U.S.)
Trump seems determined to go after Biden's son. So now that he's declared open season on a political rival's family, how about some good investigative reporting on how Trump's family is enriching themselves through their connections to the White House? Fair is fair.
Brian Winkel (Cornwall NY)
Every week of Trump is a bad week for our country. Frankly we shouldn’t care whether it’s a bad week or a good week for Trump. All that matters is what he in his henchmen and Hench women are doing to our society to our democracy to our efforts to support each and every citizen. Let’s try to keep out whether Trump is feeling good or bad from the news. And concentrate on what he’s doing to wrecking our society. With illustrations over and over and over again of bad behavior. We have learned painfully overtime that all he does is lie and so let’s concentrate on truth and that’s what we depend upon the New York Times for b
Bob Schaffel (SF Bay Area)
One other way to deny Trump control – whoever the Democratic Party nominee is should refuse to participate in any televised debate with Trump. In this election, any voters on the fence will have more than a clear view of the differences between the candidates. A debate will serve no other purpose than to allow the insulter-in-chief the platform he pathologically craves to air his mean-spirited invective.
Rob (NYC)
As the turtle Ugway in Kung Fu Panda taught us, the key to obtaining real power is giving up the illusion of control. Trump's problem being that his power is a reality television inspired illusion, on top of regular ol' illusion. Such that anytime anything of consequence occurs, Trump pancakes into the ground, a multi-layer failure of hubris and incompetency. At least Trump's Afghan Peace Treaty lasted 3 days.
Robert Stacy (Tokyo)
I am so tired of reading headlines that proclaim Trump is having a bad week. Lacking empathy for the citizens he swore to protect, and no respect for the law, Constitution, social mores, it is we who are having a bad week, every week until this nightmare ends. Trump is focused on the dismantlement of government and is doing a fantastic job relative to the goals set out. Democrats unfortunately are more of a coalition and lack a common purpose and set of goals. They better find one that is motivating beyond Trump is bad. Sander’s ardent clinging to the term socialism and Biden’s bluster about setting things out by the wood shed just don’t do it for me.
X (U.S.)
A Biden comeback is not a bad thing for Trump. Look at his Twitter -- he seems pretty delighted about "Sleepy Joe." Trump will rip Biden apart in the debates, at rallies, events...the New York Times is being much kinder to Biden than they are to Sanders. I see article after article taking some comments Sanders made about Cuba years ago out of context, but none on Biden's role in opposing desegregation, in favor of the Iraq War, in engineering the mass incarceration crisis and enabling the deportation of 3 million people...the list goes on. Trump will not go easy on Biden, and Biden won't be able to handle the scrutiny. I'm really hoping I'm wrong, but if I'm not, this is 2016 all over again.
ck (chicago)
Trump never has a bad week with his core base. When he coopted the expression "fake news" from the liberal media his problems were over. All this conversation revolves around reality which is not on the minds of his core base at ALL. For them this is MEDIA war. And the media has certainly risen to the occasion across the board. Politics for the hard right is just a video game or a contestant show. "Reality" is a conspiracy theory. And the regular Republicans obviously don't care what he does as long as he drapes his "Republican" beauty contestant banner over himself. Show your support for whoever you think can beat Trump. Even donating a dollar ripples through the system and is recognized as "support". We can do this. We must do this.
Chase (VA)
How many articles has this publication churned out month over month reveling in a supposed chaotic spiral of events beyond Trump’s control? Impeachment proceedings were a complete victory for the administration, the market has whipsawed on and off throughout this administration, and he still faces nothing of consequence from what little opposition there is. All the while, his approval rating among Republicans sits above 90%. There’s no meaning to a “bad week” for the President when every supposedly bad week leaves him in power. Trump is a venal, petty creature by nature that lives to sling mud at opponents. He will fixate from moment to moment on any of the long, long list of his perceived enemies. Jeff Sessions’ embarrassment is something that was always going to be a target. The same goes for Joe Biden’s coronation as Democratic front-runner by the press. Any attempt to divine some kind practical sign that Trump is faltering based on his tweets or statements, as this article does, is equivalent to reading tea leaves: immaterial, completely subjective, and useless for constructing a path forward. If we must debase ourselves by sifting through the bile Trump coughs up, I would worry that liberals appear to be building their strategy around someone as fragile as Biden, whose record on criminal justice, entitlements, and warfare are all awful. The only certainty is that each fault will be incorporated alongside Hunter’s dalliances into a salvo against Biden in the general.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
On November 3, 2020 will people realize that attempting to lead with “gut instincts” and no governance that an abomination of an administration has failed us? Not likely.
WILLIAM (OHIO)
@Dan THEN HOPEFULLY TRUMP WILL HAVE ANOTHER BAD WEEK......Joe Biden could give the nation stability.
quarter (sawn)
The stable genius spooks the market with a interest rate cut and the Dow drops 3 percent. Biden has a great Super Tuesday and the market is up over 4 percent. The media, and the candidates should hammer this home to Trump______he will delaminate.
Edna (NYC)
@quarter And you will benefit from the „market is up“. Get real! Only for once
Steve (Vermont)
Bush botched Katrina and Trump is doing the same with this virus. This is understandable when politics takes the lead away from the experts.
mrc (nc)
Warren needs to throw in the towel. Once that is done, the field is clear for the Obama's (both of them and maybe even their kids) to come out and stump strongly in favor of Biden to deliver the black vote for Democrats. Obama and Biden were a successful team who both claim to have genuinely liked each other. With no other registered Democrat in the field, It should not be a problem for Obama to finally get off the fence and endorse the man he chose twice for VP, especially now that there are no Democrats running. Same for Jimmy Carter and Bill and Hillary Clinton - they need to stump for Biden in the national interest. A strong turn out by non-white voters is essential to oust Trump, flip some vulnerable Senate seats and consolidate the House majority. Get Biden nominated now and Biden can spend the next 6 months and all Bloomberg's money on building Biden's top team with qualified, capable professionals. The endorsements of ex Presidents and and the wall of noise from Bloomberg sponsored adverts will drown out Trump's tweets and Fox trash talking. Trump failed to knock out Biden with his Ukrainian smear tactics and the Senate impeachment trial showed what lengths the GOP will go in selling out our country. We need the top Democratic team united and running on a platform of patriotism, integrity and fairness to oust Trump. Lets see Biden's team and compare it to Trump's. Game on.
jaxcat (florida)
The more Trump does to smear, attack or threaten Biden the more he will increase votes for his opponent. This has been a long time a'coming but do we dare see a glimmer of a light at the end of that long tunnel of darkness known as the heinous , horrific ordeal of Trump? Lordy, I do hope so for I truly had given up hope but I sure don't want to jinx us;
Philboyd (Washington, DC)
The same people who were rejecting Biden as old, hopelessly out-of-touch, prone to lying and other misdemeanors, the nutty, inappropriate uncle at Thanksgiving, now see him as some irresistible dynamo. What changed? A couple weeks of "Bernie Panic." Well, Biden is still Biden - the guy who didn't get arrested visiting Mandela, who did give the president of Ukraine an ultimatum to fire the prosecutor "coincidentally" looking into the company giving his son a bag of cash; the guy with a long history of inappropriate touching, and a long legislative record that'll ripen rapidly in the heat of a campaign. Bad day for Trump? Nah. Bad day for the Democratic party, and, arguably, America. People who were afraid Bernie was going to be George McGovern now are stuck with an inarticulate, slightly gamey version of Hubert Humphrey or Adlai Stevenson.
Jeff M (NYC)
Trump had a bad week? The rest of the country had a bad 3 years.
Louis Anthes (Long Beach, CA)
I refuse to vote for President if the Democrats nominate Biden. I don't care if Trump is reelected.
Maggie (Maine)
So let me get this straight: Himself believes that Sessions is forced into a runoff because Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation?? Does he attribute this to divine intervention ( the Divinity being Donald, of course) ? And, if he is that all powerful, surely he could smite all his enemies? Soooo many questions.
ML (Boston)
Oh and coincidentally -- Republicans are suddenly screaming about Hunter Biden again today and suddenly demanding investigations. How many Benghazi hearings did Republicans demand? Why are they still investigating Hillary Clinton's emails while the White House is currently full of people using personal devices and other insecure means to conduct government business? (Not to mention a President who blabs classified information all over Mara Lago ...) How many times have the Republicans tried to wipe out the Affordable Care Act and take away medical insurance for millions of American--even now during the Corona virus outbreak? With no results. Even backed by the party of disingenuous, Trump has a few more bad, bad weeks coming his way.
Maxi (Johnstown NY)
I hope it is just the beginning of VERY BAD weeks for Mr. Trump. I don't wish any harm to anyone and I certainly don't want anyone to come down with the Corona virus. In fact, it would be wonderful if no new cases or at least no new deaths come from it - just let the people who still support Trump (WHY?) see how inept he is and how dangerous it is to vote for this awful man. Biden will lead the Democrats to the White House, keep the House and take over the Senate. Let the Republicans clean their house and come back a better party that cares about the people and the country - they are little more than the Party of Trump now and it is very sad to watch!
Mike F. (NJ)
I'm not sure Trump has had as bad a week as the NYT makes out. Unless things really go south, I have a feeling that Trump can beat either Joe or Bernie.
Raoul (New Orleans, La.)
The world has never seen 5 months of Joe Biden in the spotlight, so pop some corn for this one. Biden carried water for many causes even establishment Democrats are opposed to. The mental gymnastics should be good entertainment.
Deb (Canada)
I don't believe Mr. Trump thinks or plans anything ahead. Mr. Trump is a self serving, self aggrandizing, weak man with little apparent thought or concern for the perception of others! His sole purpose seems to be what he can get out of this life, enrichment and benefit for himself.
mrc (nc)
I honestly see no problem in Trump attacking Jeff Sessions. Have at it guys. Sling mud at each other . I want to see both Obama's endorse Biden and start stumping for Biden. Then I want to see Trump attack both Obama's on Twitter and Fox. That should be enough to get the black vote out and elect Biden in the key states that count.
Mike (NY)
Yeah he can't control the weather either so what? Doing a great job.
Tim Love (Bangor, Maine)
I smell normalcy in our country's future, and I see Donald Trump either in jail, or flying off to Russia for a permanent vacation. Either scenario would be just peachy.

A vaccine for Trunpona virus is expected out in Nov. 2020.

At Jennifer Finney Boylan: "Bernie Angry. Bernie Smash!" Taunting Bernie supporters is not only bad sportsmanship, it's politically reckless. The person currently in the whitehouse is genuinely dangerous.
McCamy Taylor (Fort Worth, Texas)
Poor Trump! He abused his power to withhold military aid to an ally nation in order to pressure that nation to create a bogus case against his political rival, VP Biden. His plan seemed to working--Biden was too distracted to campaign or raise money. But in the end, it was all for naught. And to make matters worse, Biden now has Teflon. After this, nothing that the GOP throws at him is going to stick. That which did not kill Biden's campaign has made him stronger.
ScottC (Philadelphia)
I hope that Joe Biden can hold his head high and his temper in place when he is bombarded with what is likely to be a torrent of filth from the Trump Family and cult. The Hillary email brouhaha will look a walk in the park compared to what these people are preparing. The Trump campaign is far better organized and funded than it was four years ago - I think this is going to be the ugliest Presidential campaign in US history. If I were Joe Biden I would begin to practice daily meditation - no joke. Vice-President Biden needs to project calm, honesty and intelligence in the face of a Trump horror show - directed at him and his family.
Old Town Outsider (Alexandria VA)
First Trump was impeached because of Joe Biden. Trump is suddenly realizing he will lose the presidency to Joe Biden. POTUS rage is at an all-time high.
Pottree (Joshua Tree)
With Biden’s surge, I think Hunter Biden, evidentially a fragile person, is at high risk for pressure from Trump and his minions. Trump is like a terrier and he feels that he has suffered unjustly because of his anti-Biden efforts, and we can anticipate his doubling down and getting even nastier. Watch out, Hunter!

Sleepy Joe making for a Sleepless Don.

On a stellar day at the Stock Market, on the morning after the weakest, least adept Democrat had a big night, and after the continuing rant to ignore the sold effort led by our President's team to counter the COVID-19, still the hate. Get ready for another 4 years of growth and health. With respect to the virus story, and here in the land of polls are all, this from Gallup: “ ... a recent Gallup poll that found 77 percent of the population is very or somewhat confident in the government’s ability to handle the coronavirus, up significantly from 58 percent from the Ebola virus in 2014 and 67 percent from the swine flu in 2009,” they explain. “At a time when coronavirus was just getting on the radar, the administration took decisive steps to mitigate the spread of the virus to the United States.”
RN (Ann Arbor, MI)
@J Brian Obama set up a response team to Ebola before Ebola was in this country. Coronavirus is in this country and causing deaths and the test kits that are badly needed are not available. People cannot be tested for the virus. We do not where all cases are coming from and there is no plan to test and track people with the virus. There is no plan from Trump to deal with any of this. He thinks a vaccine is just 3-4 months away. He said this on television and was immediately corrected by the head of infectious diseases at the NIH. Just one more sign that we have a clown in charge.
Jim Remington (Eugene)
Pandemics have always shaped human history, and they will continue to do so. The appearance of a new one will focus a laser on the Trump's attempts to deny health care to the poor, to dismantle the CDC, and his appointment of the totally unqualified, anti-science Mike Pence to head the virus response team. Biden and Bloomberg must continue to vigorously call out the sheer and inexcusable stupidity of the Trump's behavior.

Honestly I think Trump will defeat himself with this corona outbreak. Then he will be gone. Sad America you missed the chance to vote for something new instead of „only“ replacing Trump. Can you imagine how very much the Trump likes this scenario. He is! in the center, even within the Democrats. Sad. Very much a missed chance to push the country (finally) forward to a first world country. Healthcare, corona testing $$, sick leave, and and and! and..
M. (California)
"For Mr. Trump, whose belief in his own ability to shape external events is a source of comfort, it now means confronting a moment when almost nothing is in his control." What a remarkable statement. Nothing but showmanship has ever been under the President's control; he's been able to coast along on sheer luck, along with a lot of bluffing and threats against anyone who tries to point to the reality just outside the window. And it worked, for a time.
Gadea (Montpellier France)
I hope he'll soon get through a nightmare!
Bernie H (Portland, Maine)
@M. All too true, but I will point out that Baghdad Bob spoke much better English.
Never Ever Again (Michigan)
The bottom line is, we need a CHANGE in the White House period. If we want to have anything resembling the United States of America left in 4 years, 2020 is the year to make the change to insure our democracy prevails.
Corrie (Alabama)
Here is a bit of Alabama primary data illustrating: 1) Why Trump is in trouble among college-educated suburbanites. 2) Why Biden is a better choice to win the suburb than Bernie. Alabamians cast approx. 89,500 fewer ballots in 2020 than in 2016, but that’s not the whole story. There were approx. 124,000 fewer Repub ballots and 56,000 more Dem ballots. This is a big deal. 2016 R Primary: 860,562 ballots 2020 R Primary: 737,106 ballots 2016 D Primary: 398,157 ballots 2020 D Primary: 454,162 ballots Of the 737,106 R ballots, 27,919 (3.8%) didn’t vote for Trump. This is a big deal, esp when we get into the nitty gritty by looking at our most educated county — Madison, which includes Huntsville metro, suburbs: 2016 Madison R Primary: 60,822 2020 Madison R Primary: 50,503 (7.5% chose someone other than Trump) 2016 Madison D Primary: 29,116 (Sanders 30.1%) 2020 Madison D Primary: approx 45,000 (Sanders 23.3%) Approx 15,000 MORE D ballots cast in Madison and 10,000 FEWER R ballots. Bernie’s total votes in Madison INCREASED by approx 1,700, but he still dropped in %. Why? Because Trump is losing the college educated suburbanites who are more conservative than liberal. Bernie decreased his total votes in AL by approx 1,000 even though the # of Democrat ballots increased by 56,000. Democrat 2016 - 398,157 (Bernie - 76,399) Democrat 2020 - 454,162 (Bernie - 75,358) Okay? This is reality. And I really don’t want to hear anything else about rigged primaries.
Alicia (Earth)
Precisely my dear Corrie... you’re a genius.
Charlotte Morton (Florence MA)
When the Times did a hit a simplistic hit piece on Bernie last Sunday front and center, in the A section(normally reserved for facts) I felt sorry for him. It was like reverse psychology which I think now was probably actually unintentional! The Economist did it too. A LOT of the once liberal-now more conservative- media were trying to stop Bernie the weekend before Super Tuesday. So I think the establishment push against Bernie was even more obvious than it was in 2016 because that one we only found out about much later from Donna Brazile, And in that case I‘m not sure Bernie would have had the delegates anyway. John Oliver beat the centrist media to it two Sundays before though with a very nerdy graph of economists’s views on Medicare -for-all and how much it would cost. Oliver’s take was definitely “not crazy at all”. And Oliver was just in time for early voting.
T. Lum (Ground zero)
If there is a way for President Biff to declare bankrupcy, stiff the contractors, write it off on taxes and market himself as successful, he will find it, and declare it.
Jim (Toronto, ON)
The last thing Trump wants is for Democrats to give the nomination to Biden. Trump knows that most moderates on the right will vote for Biden. I have to believe that anyone who's educated has to be completely disgusted on how Trump has acted over the last 3 plus years.
MARY (SILVER SPRING MD)
@Jim you've giving Trump a lot of credit.
Jagdeer Haleed (New York)
@Jim But that's exactly what people said for HRC too. Anybody worth their salt would vote for HRC rather Trump in 2016 but we still have him as the president.
Gadea (Montpellier France)
he just brought shame and disgust on himself and america
S Butler (New Mexico)
The stock market likes the idea of Joe Biden becoming our next president. 1200-point gain. Impressive. They also like the idea of having someone competent dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Too bad he can't be inaugurated before January 20th. I haven't been hearing so much about Trump tweeting recently. I guess the old hits for Trump against Jeff Sessions are the best he's got right now. What do you think is distracting Trump now? Biden.
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
Biden can’t even complete a coherent sentence or remember the opening of our preamble, which is why the DNC hid him from voters the last few months and had to resort to manipulating the process two days before voting to force his primary position.
S Butler (New Mexico)
@Misplaced Modifier He's going to beat Trump and you know it. That's why you sound so desperate to disparage him.
Srocket (SoFla)
My once Obama voting parents in Texas now say that Biden is a criminal who got Hunter a Ukranian job and now they're both millionaires. After my head exploded I realized that my One America News watching brainwashed kinfolk have stepped over to the dark side. Them and others (the base) won't abandon DJT. This is why Biden is our best hope, despite the eventual character assassination he'll endure, to attract independents, moderate Republicans, African Americans, suburban women, etc.
RD (Los Angeles)
You can only lie habitually to the American people before it catches up to you and all of the mess and defilement that Donald Trump has created is now starting to show its stench and corruption across the boards . And as he clings to the hope of astrong economy which seems to be tumbling around him, it will be interesting to see what the next set of lies will be. Maybe he and his administration should stop thinking about themselves for a brief moment and deal with the real crisis at hand which is the coronavirus.
Sterling (Brooklyn, NY)
Problem with the Democrats is that they want a majority of voters to back them. Republicans, on other hand, are content with white minority rule. Blue states pay the bills in this country. They should start advocating for secession in order to break the stranglehold that the lazy Red Welfare States have on power. Lord knows the Evangelical Welfare Empire would look like a third world country if it wasn’t for socialism from the blue states.
trautman (Orton, Ontario)
@Sterling I have been posting that for over a year. Red Welfare stated go on about taxes and how they have none. Happy to suck it out of the Blue states. Kentucky gets $40 billion than they put in. Welfare and Rand Paul will his dirty little hand stuck in our pockets. No, if Trump wins the Blue states will move to separate fine with me. Let the Red Welfare states eat dirt. Jim Trautman
The Night They Raided... (MA)
@Sterling “Lord knows the Evangelical Welfare Empire would look like a third world country if it wasn’t for socialism from the Blue States.” And here’s another truth about Trump (and probably most of these Republicans). If he were a Democrat, he wouldn’t hesitate to use that angle on socialism against his opponents.
Blackmamba (Il)
Our smiling, smirking, hacking, interfering and meddling Russian Czar Father Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin's clear choice for the 2020 Democratic Party Presidential nominee is/ was Bernard Sanders. While Rudolph Giuliani led the Trump Administration team scheme to dirty and involve Joseph Biden and son in Ukrainian politics that led to withholding American military aid from Ukraine in it's fight with Russia.
David J (NJ)
I think Gov. Dewey from some mysterious dimension is whispering in trump’s ear...Truman, Truman,Truman.
David J (NJ)
@Peter the implication, Dewey never thought he’d lose.
N.B. (Cambridge, MA)
Waiting for him to say: Fake news -- everything is great and going his way. And a lot of very knowledgeable people acknowledge his superiority over any man or worm or woman or virus!
HGreenberg (Detroit, MI)
Nothing could be better for Trump than Biden’s resurgence. Sanders is frightening. He’d be a much tougher opponent. Thousands come to hear him. Biden is borderline demented, he stands for nothing, and the extent of his corruption has yet to be revealed. No one gets excited to hear him, he draws a couple hundred people to his events. Hunter was paid $60,000 a month to do a job he had no experience and didn’t do. The Bidens have amassed massive wealth without creating jobs or anything of value. Trump must be licking his chops!
SarahK (New Jersey)
@HGreenberg Poor Republicans are scared. When they lost "socialism" as their weapon, they just lost the election.
sophia (bangor, maine)
@HGreenberg : Thousands may come to hear him but they sure didn't turn out to vote for him. Where was the revolution? Not one suburban, white woman would vote for Bernie and we need them and African-American women. People stood in line for seven hours in some places and most of them voted for Joe. Where were the young people?
Ruby (Kansas)
@HGr... really ?
Mua (Transoceanic)
While it's hard to see a republican-lite like Joe Biden being up to the monumental task of re-building the nation after the trump crime family has ransacked it and left their toxic filth in every corner from the Justice Department to the Depts. of Education, Interior, Energy, Homeland Security and on and on, if that's all that America can come up with, so be it. The trump crime family has ravaged the nation far worse that Coronavirus ever will-- and they're not even finished.
abj slant (Akron)
@Mua Keep in mind that Joe Biden has a lot of experience in government, and will most likely bring in the most experienced personnel he can find. It isn't about the next president fixing the current clown's train wreck, it is about the next president delegating effectively.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
@Mua It is not hard to see. Biden knows our government and how it should work for us. Trump sees the government working for his benefit and clouded vision.
Objectively Subjective (Utopia's Shadow)
Yes, Trump must be terrified of the Clinton clone Democrats seem determined to throw at him. Trump is laughing at all the suckers who voted for Clinton because she was “electable” and are now skittering behind Biden because he’s the electable paladin of the left. Definition of insanity...
RT (Texas)
@Objectively Subjective Clinton got three million more votes. Trump was surprised he won. Lastly, all Dems and Indies who voted for Trump will vote for him again?
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
The DNC and Democratic Party “Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory since 2000”
Matt (NJ)
Biden winning the nomination is the greatest gift Trump could have imagined. All he has to do is reopen the Hillary playbook. Bernie is a curveball for Trump. Drug addled son on the board of a corrupt Ukrainian has company, and had an affair with his dead brother’s wife.
RT (Texas)
@Matt Sorry, but things are not the same as 2016. Trump has revealed himself to the unfamiliar to be a disaster, pathological liar and buffoon among many other traits. And Biden is more likable than Clinton.
BAM (NYC)
What does the son have to do with the father? And does this open up criticism of the Trump brood?
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
@Matt Lobbing dud grenades, the “Biden” theory is a weak strategy to employ.
Joe Paper (Pottstown, Pa.)
Trump will beat Biden or Bernie. Nobody around here wanted Biden, some wanted Bernie. When they debate, Bernie's head will explode or Biden will mumble us to sleep. His most remarkable statements will be his gafffffffffffffffffs. And boy will there be many. What ever. Trump wins.
Jon Alexander (Boston)
You seem oblivious to the obvious dementia and stupidity exhibited by the current president.
Joe Paper (Pottstown, Pa.)
@Jon Alexander .....Johnny, We are all living better now than 4 years ago. I like it.
Ted George (Paris)
Yea, nice try, but Biden's history of blatant corruption isnt going away. Senate Judiciary under Graham, as well as Barr and Durham, will be exposing a lot of graft. Secondly, Biden's evident and alarming mental confusion isnt going to get better either.
BAM (NYC)
What history of corruption? Do you have any evidence to substantiate this? Because there isn’t any.
BAM (NYC)
What history of corruption? Do you have any evidence to substantiate this? Because there isn’t any.
Drew (Warrenton, VA)
@Ted George Graham and Barr........... not exactly fine upstanding citizens themselves, are they?
BO Krause (Victoria, Texas)
Pull up a chair and get your popcorn ready for the Biden to debate the boss. Biden is going to lose whatever nerves he has left when the commander in chief gobbles him up.
RT (Texas)
@BO Krause Trump knows nothing. Why do Trumpists admire that?
blgreenie (Lawrenceville NJ)
@BO Krause Unless he changes his mind, you won't get to see anyone gobbled up. Several weeks back, Trump said that he won't debate this time.
Missy (Texas)
We haven't heard from Trump lately because he's in the doomsday bunker waiting out the Corona virus :-)
Naser (Finland)
Really??? Trump gonna eat Biden alive in debate. Biden is Hillary 2.0 without the debate skill of Hillary.
Bernie H (Portland, Maine)
@Naser What debate? Trump isn’t going to agree to any debates! He’s completely incoherent NOW, and by that time he’ll be so far gone in dementia that even his cult will begin to figure it out!
Angela Minton (Oklahoma)
Actually, I am worn out with the out-of-control, histrionics, and blood lust rants of our mentally-imbalanced president. This isn’t a Roman Colosseum and candidates are not gladiators. I welcome a low-key candidate who knows that debate is supposed to involve civil discourse and relevant issues—not school yard name calling. The truly kind Joe Biden would be a welcome respite whether he matches Trump insult for insult or not.
Wayne (Ontario)
Now between his cult rallies & numerous golf outings Trump will endlessly tweet false & vindictive insults about Joe Biden. He appointed Pence to speak to the daily coronavirus crisis so he wouldn't need to be 'bothered' about that. After Trump is gone all of his hand-picked boot-lickers will regret accepting their administration positions as more info about Trump's corruption & crimes emerge. Fools are easily conned by con men & unfortunately America has millions of fools.
Blue Couple (Idaho)
That's gotta hurt! Biden wins and the market likes it! Oh yeah...bring it on in November!
Tom (Pennsylvania)
Once again the left is trying to script the race...no where was it more apparent than the liberal media creation of Obama then Hillary...and now the coronation of Joe Biden. Will the American people be suckered in by this again?
Roger D (Minneapolis)
What reasonable person could not be cheering Biden's Revenge?
Joe (NH)
I’m not. I won’t vote for Biden in election if he’s the nominee. I voted for Sanders and his movement. Biden is more of the same and I won’t support that.
Roger D (Minneapolis)
@Joe I respect your opinion, and truthfully, i don't have a dog in this fight. However, I suggest that the general election will not be won without the Center. The odds are with Biden's Big Tent approach on that point.
Bill Shack (Oswego)
I watched "Shameless" on Showtime and always said, "Frank cannot do anything nastier next week, can he?" He never disappointed, always did something more despicable. With Trump I wonder over and over if he can make himself look any more stupid. Always manages somehow. Amazing.
Thad (Austin, TX)
I am still holding out hope that Bernie will get the nomination, but if Biden wins the primary I'll knock on doors for him until my knuckles are bloody. Donald Trump isn't just a corrupt, spiteful racist, he is also willfully ignorant of the myriad issues he is supposed to be in charge of. Vote blue no matter who and evict the dangerous kleptocrat from the people's house.
Opinioned! (NYC)
After Biden’s showing, Trump will now be asking for help from two of the most despotic beings alive today: • Vladimir Putin • Mark Zuckerberg
Sara (Oakland)
Trump is both naive & shallow, ignorant & grandiose. His focus is only vaguely rationalized as serving the public good. It is blatantly self-promoting & self-serving. From his approach to North Korea, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, immigration, climate change, et al- his tries to get a hyped up headline he can boast about. His naivete makes America a stooge for sly international manipulation (like the Taliban attacking Afghan forces during a 'truce' with the US or North Korea getting US military exercises cancelled but never stopping nuclear development). Pompeo may posture, but Trump has failed to make any substantive gains. Now with covid-19, Trump's anxiety that a Market slump will hurt his reelection may have slowed the crucial early response- 2 months ago-that could have had us prepared with thousands of test kits. He appeared more interested in minimizing the risk so the Dow would stabilize. He relied on Spin Doctors before he deferred to real doctors. Now- bungling public health may prove his Achilles Heel as every American now feels unsafe and appalled by Trump's lack of competence or knowledge.
Jason (San Francisco)
Trump will chew up Biden and spit him out in a general election. If establishment Democrats and their cat's paw, media like the Times, msnbc, etc., had not poisoned the well by selling voters Republican talking points about Sanders, Trump would be in a lot more trouble than he is right now. Bernie's real policies (not as they are caricatured in the media) are our best shot at beating Trump in November.
Larry D (Brooklyn)
Bernie’s “real policies” are Bernie’s real problem.
John (Pittsburgh/Cologne)
Biden is a warmonger who: 1. Fully supported the war in Iraq 2. Never even attempted to end the war in Afghanistan 3. Attempted to overthrow Assad, killing millions in the process, including a number of U.S. soldiers 4. Bombed Libya to pieces, turning it into a violent, unstable mess Trump will remind every American of this daily.
trautman (Orton, Ontario)
@John And everyday we will be reminded of the blood bath in Afghanistan he has let lose in his attempt to win the Nobel Prize. Gee, did not win with his lover Kim, so now move on. As for him being Mr. Peace what a joke as he and his friend Bibi prepares to go on trial. Do love Israel talking about those terrible Arab states elect a man charged with fraud, his wife already pleaded quilty and his son was ordered to pay $170,000 to a journalist who he had libeled. Yes, there is an honorable group for sure. No, I talk to people and Sideshow Bob the Coney Island conman blathering on has grown old and like any tv show it has jumped the shark. Goodbye and into the dustbin, or maybe when he loses he will demand his friends at the Supreme Court overrule it. Jim Trautman
Larry D (Brooklyn)
Pacifists for Trump?
John (Pittsburgh/Cologne)
@trautman Joe Biden can defend spending $45 billion per year in Afghanistan (not to mention dozens of American lives), instead of spending it on emergency disease preparedness, infrastructure, education, etc. I think the U.S. is ready for that debate. Let's get it started.
Steve S (Florida)
I'll take a corrupt Biden over a corrupt Trump any day. So far, however, no one has provided any evidence that Joe is corrupt or that he is anything but a class act. Trump continually demonstrates his lack of class and continues to use his government job to increase the profits at many of his hotels and other business ventures. Biden is what we need to improve the partisanship of our congress and our people. We need to stop the hate!
Nate (USA)
Democrats: "Trump is corrupt and must be removed from office." Also Democrats: "Vote for our own completely corrupt, corporatist, and incompetent nominee, Joe Biden."
Paul (USA)
Someone’s bitter about Super Tuesday.
Matt (Chicago)
Nate - if Biden is “corrupt”, then Trump is “BIGLY, HUGELY CORRUPT”. There is really no comparison. If he goes down this road, Trump will lose badly.
BAM (NYC)
Do you have any factual support for labeling Biden as “completely corrupt”?
Greg (Sacramento)
Scorched earth. As if the country hasn't been under a blowtorch for the last three years.
m. portman (Boston, MA)
Bernie now has to be on his best behavior, something he finds very hard to do. So does Trump. Trump has always said: "I can do anything I want!"... now it's obvious that he simply didn't do the right things. This will not just bite him, it will kick him out of office! Donald, you need to start packing your clothes (for storage), and figure out how your children will run your crooked schemes while you're in jail. Phew! This is the first deep breath I've drawn since Trump got in.
Richard Martin (Austin TX)
Can we just start calling Trump 'Dangling Don'? Not for the reasons you may think, but because he only dangles rewards in front of his base and never delivers. I'm sure this would not get under his skin.
MH (Long Island, NY)
Mr. Trump will start his personal attacks and his name calling against Joe Biden, soon, I’m sure. That’s about the only way he can campaign since he hasn’t learned much in his tenure in the White House. He seems like a frustrated, inarticulate old man, angry at the Dem results of Super Tuesday and the ongoing challenge of the Corona virus. He’s in over his head, has been for the last three years. We can only hope - and vote - for change in November.
Rainbow (Virginia)
Biden is the anti-Trump. Decent, really authentic, empathetic, kind. He'll also appoint competent people. It was a relief to know that at the moment at least we won't have His Majisty dtRump vs. Angry Bernie fighting each other. That would be truly exhausting.
Lawrence (Washington D.C,)
Viruses don't behave, and are are just ill mannered. What will happen when the first person from the White House comes down with it? I fear the illogical, perhaps bordering on insane, reaction.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
Any minute now he'll be telling us that Biden pere and Biden fils are personally responsible for the Coronavirus, having used Ukraine as an experimental lab a few years back. Also, wasn't Joe at Ford's Theater when Lincoln was shot? Hmmmmm.
gblack02 (Lexington, KY)
Well done Maggie. Good perceptiveness is a gift. You have it.
Harpo (Toronto)
Seeing "Cory Booker" I saw "Vice President Cory Booker".
Pat (Louisiana)
Is the NYTimes really that naive to believe that good or bad weeks have any substantial effect on Trump anymore? He’s the President and therefore as far as Trump is concerned every week is a good one. The man has survived Impeachment, along with every other investigation and scandal, so until he’s not the President of the free world anymore, with the most politically loyal base and Party, I’d say he’s having a pretty alright week. Let’s not make the mistake of pretending otherwise.
Mark (Fla)
@Pat I actually agree with you. Trump is shameless, amoral and a pathological liar so things that would cause any normal person to feel remorse dimply don't exist with him, so every day is a good one for him, but for very disturbing reasons. Thus far Trump has ridden the coat tails of the strong economy that Obama left him, however it's taken two rate cuts by the feds to help keep it going as a result of his gaffs and blunders. Remember when Trump said his tax cuts would produce 5% GDP. Last year was about 2%, exactly what it was under Obama only without the $1Trillion in deficits.
Randy (Pa)
Trump's attempt to influence the election narrative on Twitter with Democratic voters is comical at best. One only look to the results of Super Tuesday and South Carolina to see his ineffectiveness.
MC (California)
it is true. The insurance companies are celebrating. If Sanders looses, they will be free to boost their profits higher than ever. It will be a boondoggle for them and our system will remain the same for them regardless of a Biden or Trump victory. We can only hope that the voters wise up in future states, so Sanders can take them on and improve things for the vast number of people.
ClydeS (NorCal)
Is Trump disappointed with the effectiveness of his primary benefactor, Russia?
That's What She Said (The West)
By the Way--where's delegate count and why isn't California counted for Bernie--ahead by double digits? Just can't give Sanders a break....
Jim Brokaw (California)
Every week with Trump is a "bad week". Trump believes it occasionally, and I believe it -every- week.
gblack02 (Lexington, KY)
@Jim Brokaw Bad men always have good weeks; their skill and propensity to "spin" the truth in their own minds makes a bad week impossible.
Believer in Public Schools (New Salem, MA)
Trump was not able to make good on his promise to jail Hillary Clinton. So I think that horse has left the barn. He followers may not be so star-struck with Trump's promises to put his next opponent in jail. And I think the Independents may have noticed what a terrible leader Trump is in an actual crisis. Promising tax cuts. When he should be funding anti-virals, vaccine development, and ventilators.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Trump may have had a bad week, but I've had 165 bad weeks since he took office in January 2017.
S Butler (New Mexico)
Backfire! That's what's going to happen if Republicans attempt to resurrect Hunter Biden and Barisma. They're going to try anyway. Who was it that said that some boys just have to urinate on the electric fence? I am so sorry to see so many people being infected by the coronavirus and to see such an inadequate response to deal with it. Much more testing needs to be done and even more drastic containment measures need to be implemented. Trump's days as president are numbered. His eventual prison sentence may not be. Biden's going to win the Democratic nomination and needs to conduct an ALL OUT campaign to force Trump to VOW not to pardon his family members or anyone that has ever worked for him in any role in or out of government. He should either VOW not to pardon anyone or suffer the consequences of refusing to do so. He should be forced to release all people especially the women that signed nondisclosure agreements (NDA's) with him or suffer the consequences of refusing to do so. Look what Elizabeth Warren did to Mike Bloomberg over the NDA issue. No one should be able to go on Facebook, turn on their television look at any newspaper or listen to satellite radio without hearing ads attacking Trump over the pardon and NDA issue. It's a winning strategy.
Hobo (SFO)
Reading the NYT and the comments from incredibly smart readers may be consoling but not reassuring. Can Biden beat a perverse bully who does not play by the rules and has a malignant following ? The key would be to win the house and the Senate both. The virus will most likely go dormant in the summer, Trump will manage to keep on pumping up the markets. This fight is far from over, and it really does not look that great for Democrats and this democracy.
Wondering (NY, NY)
@Hobo i'd be careful calling nearly 1/2 the country malignant. They are likely to write you off as a SF limousine liberal
Teddy Chesterfield (East Lansing)
Every time Republicans mention Hunter Biden, Democrats should ask how Ivanka got those sweetheart China trademarks worth millions. If Senate Republicans launch an investigation, House Democrats should do the same. Want to debate corruption? Let's go.
Robert L. (RI)
@Teddy Chesterfield and lets not forget about the illegal misuse of the trump Charity ....someone ask ivanka how that Compulsory Training is going... talk about "getting off easy"...!
Mark (Atlanta)
I think one irony of Trump's having gone after Biden and his son on Ukraine actually boosted Biden. After all, even if the vote not to convict Trump of abuse of power was political, no amount of alternative facts can change the fact that impeachment ultimately about Trump's underlying concern that Biden can beat him. Voters are like dogs who can read fear on Trump's face. Arf!
JJ (Denver, Co.)
Much to the chagrin of trump, Biden is coming for him. People are wise to trump's antics now and thoughtful people are tuning him out. Biden has everything you'd want in a potus & trump knows he can't belittle him effectively. This country needs calm, effective leadership and Biden is the best bet for that.
Jeff Atkinson (Gainesville, GA)
There have been reports that having a candidate who can defeat Trump is a high priority with Dems & Trump been signaling in any way he can think of that Biden would be just that candidate since at least early summer. While he may read little, perhaps he has read the Uncle Remus stories.
Davidz (Chile)
@Jeff Atkinson Doubtful that!
John Grillo (Edgewater, MD)
Now, a well-timed Supreme Court ruling finally permitting access to the Fake President’s deeply secreted income and business tax returns, would indeed be the “icing” on the Biden electoral “cake”. The legendary October Surprise may actually occur earlier, in June this time around.
Casey S (New York)
Love the assertion that Sanders poor showing on Tuesday was due to Putin not trying hard enough. That’s some vile spin, even for y’all.
MHN (Tennessee)
It's important to note that Trump has never had a bad week. (As he views and reports matters.) He is so totally divorced from reality, and so utterly wed to falsehood, that only an election loss in November will change the script. Even then, the script will concern how the election was stolen from him by unworthy people. Pray that he does not go into the textbook writing business. The damage to history, as to this country, was be incalculable.
James (Chicago)
At least we now know that it was accurate that some of the market selloff was due to the threat of a Sanders nomination. Sanders dropping out would lead to a fresh string of all time highs! Ironically, this would help Trump more than Biden.
ChristineMcM (Massachusetts)
Interesting article. How neatly it coincides with a pandemic the president has mismanged from the start, an imeachment trial that revealed the depths of GOP corruption, and the Lazarus-type resurgence of the one candidate he never wanted to face, all in the same year. It reminds all of us exhausted voters that one month in Trump-time is like a full year. While it's clear that Trump can't control events, he's had a lifetime of luck, which begs the question, it it finally running out? I don't believe in fairy tales, and neither should any American. This continues to be the fight of our lives, one that demands patience, fortitude, and perserverance--all the qualities this president simply doesn't have at all.
Wondering (NY, NY)
@ChristineMcM Parroting the line that the President mismanaged the outbreak is getting tiresome. He took immense criticism for taking one of the singular steps available to him by limiting travel to the US from affected areas. Another case of TDS where one can't find anything but fault with Trump.
pi (maine)
A PR campaign is not an emergency preparedness and response plan. Go ahead, deny science, scrub data from websites, get out your magic marker - outside of politics it's magical thinking. But politics, for better or worse, creates facts on the ground. Which is why we need good government. Which is why we need to defeat Trump. As a campaign volunteer for decades, I feel people don't talk as much about working together as being personally validated. There's been a switch from 'lets do it' to ' I hear you' I think it takes folks' eyes off the prize. Such as the Supreme Court. Picture a Trump super majority on the bench, like forever. Are we all in yet? Donald Trump's very bad horrible 2020 election. Let's do it.
EB (San Diego)
@pi I will most assuredly be "all in", whatever all in happens to turn out to be in November on the Democratic side. But, as a 78 year old who has wanted to see Bernie Sanders win since 2016, it's getting a little tiresome to see the Democratic Party do whatever it can to make sure he doesn't win the nomination. He has the strongest chance to beat Trump...the polls have been saying this for awhile now. Joe Biden - less so. So what gives?
Sarah (Arlington, VA)
@EB It is not, repeat, not, the Democratic party doing whatever it can to make sure that our self-declared revolutionary Bernie doesn't win the nomination. It is the primary voters. Bernie was leading the polls of the Virginia primary just last week, while being soundly defeated on Tuesday because the primary voters participation was almost double as much compared to the one of 2016.
Fred (GA)
@EB As a 75 year old just what has the Democrat party done to make sure he does not win the nomination? He would get beat by trump easily. What poll are suffering too? All the polls I have seen show Biden beating trump by more then Sanders beating trump.
Tom (San Diego)
It is my wish that Trump have second thoughts and decide to quit while he's ahead and not run for a second term.
Jerseytime (Montclair, NJ)
The sad part is that Trump is not so much concerned about "controlling everything", but rather his obsession with having things look like he's in control. And thus, "winning". For him, the entire planet is one big Potemkin village.
PeteG (Boise, ID)
Joe needs to get ahead of the onslaught of lies and criticisms Trump and the rest of the Republicans will throw at him, by acknowledging and reminding the electorate, that they will do it. THEN, he needs to take an assumptive tone about being President, and that it will be the natural outcome of his candidacy.
Nate Grey (Pittsburgh)
Trump can’t control his thoughts, words, actions, or tweets let alone events. He cannot control Kim, Putin, or Erdogan. Let’s rejoice and be glad. Maybe teflon Donald will start to shed some of the patina of perfection he has sold to his ardent supporters and lose his next election. I think some of his believers are starting to see the fraud that lives inside the man. The Dems need to build a slate with genuine regard for the well being of Americans and America, including our allies and our immigrants, the poor, the disenfranchised, the uninsured, and the homeless. The Democratic politicians will have only themselves to blame if they can build an agenda and candidates that appeal more to voters that Donald Trump and his legislative and judicial enablers.
s brady (Fingerlakes NY)
I have a hypothetical question. Would Trump in desperation decide to declare martial law with the virus as an excuse or even without an excuse? Could be declare martial law under virtually any circumstance?
Shane Lynch (New Zealand)
@s brady That's probably not so hypothetical as you think - Trump has already basically threatened as much. "I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad," To me, this is saying all he has to do is give the word, and they are let lose. The problem for the military is that their oath says that they are to protect the Constitution and the US from enemies both foreign and domestic. It also says that they are to follow the orders of POTUS. What happens when POTUS is a domestic enemy? Trump is counting on the line about obedience to POTUS as a sure thing the military will do as he says, even if it is illegal and martial law stuff. If he loses this election, expect a scorched earth scenario from Trump - 3 months is a long time to do a lot of damage. Trump won't go down without a fight, he has too much to lose when he leaves office.
JHM (UK)
Trump must be seething that the Market is heralding Biden's ascendancy among Democratic candidates. I have just read this on an Investment site. He thinks he controls the Market. Also, this is added to his poor performance with Corona Virus, so he blames Obama for the law that he blames (double blame it seems) for hindering his action to create a workable structure to get a handle on the virus. Without this they virus will continue and unlike in China it will grow I fear. There have not been vigorous steps to curb this virus. But it is not due to Obama or any law as he could have analyzed this earlier and the effort would be so much more robust. But we know Trump will never take responsibility for anything he fails at, and fail he does as we have seen over and over again.
Bella (The City Different)
I'm not as confidant as you seem to be with Biden. I can envision trump winning again in 2020 unless we have some untold catastrophe. Biden is about as exciting as mashed potatoes. I know he has experience and he has been around a long time, but with all the hopeful lineup at the beginning of this tedious process, we now end up with (sigh) Biden. Maybe he will change my mind in the next few months and I will vote for him if he secures the nomination, but right now I am disappointed where we are headed.
LB (California)
@ Bella; I hear you. He may not be Prince Charming but he’s all we have. Look at it this way: trump risked his presidency on making Biden look bad, and he was impeached for it. He does not feel good about Biden’s sudden “popularity” but we should! And we need to rally around whomever the nominee is. Cheer up.. There is a God..
Nycdweller (Nyc)
The economy is still strong; unemployment is still low as neither Bernie nor Biden can improve on either despite their DECADES in politics. Trump 2020
Claire McFadden (Belfast)
@Nycdweller Has the work Vice President Biden did in helping us get out of The Great Recession slipped your mind? Remember how he and President Obama came into office in the teeth of the worst economic downturn since the 1920's and set us on the path to a strong recovery. Ring a bell?
jim roberts (kincardine)
Trump deployed his Ukraine- Biden weapon way too early. The early shock and awe impact on the voting public has dissipated, and now fully discounted. In 2016 Trumps shtick was novel and effective. In 2020 it is predictable , tired and will be ineffective.
SKwriter (Shawnee, KS)
So Bloomberg is backing Biden. I hope the Biden camp uses some of Bloomberg's communication and advertising personal to advantage. Bloomberg's ad campaign was fabulous clear and to the point. It was perfect for the majority of younger and tech savvy audience. Please, please no more people sitting around the kitchen table blah, blah, ad nauseum. I'm excited and I haven't been in over 3 years.
Mr. Adams (Texas)
The question now is whether the Bernie Bros will try to wreck Biden's chances. There's no email scandal this time. No conspiracy involving superdelegates. No conference of party elites trying to subvert democracy. The people are voting for Biden, not Sanders, and that's all there is to it, but I don't have much confidence that the Bros will see it that way. Even without an excuse, I tend to think they'll invent one and call the election unfair.
Objectively Subjective (Utopia's Shadow)
Mr. Adams, if the Democratic party is interested in getting the support of the diverse group of people supporting Sanders, step one is to stop deploying the racist and sexist Bernie Bro meme. Grow up. Second, try appealing to Sanders supporters. That means putting away your not very veiled contempt. And it also means proposing serious policies that appeal to his supporters. People are not supporting Sanders because of his charm and good looks. They like his policies. Third, it’s past time that Democrats realize that people are done voting for the lesser of two evils. If you want to elect your candidate, whose campaign is financed by rich folks expecting a payback, who wanted to cut social security, who helped draft the patriot act, who voted for the illegal and unjust Iraq war, and who seems to be in the early stages of dementia, maybe you should expect to be on your own.
Casey (New York, NY)
@Mr. Adams They can cry all they want but if a single one stays home election day, they take personal blame if Individual-1 remains in the WH instead of under the custody of SDNY
Edna (NYC)
@Mr Adam What kind of war are you in? I thought this was an election for us, the United States of America...
Michael (NYC)
Two (very) bad things to rid us of one unprecedented and even more unpredictable peril? That's an exchange I'm willing to make.
keith (Florida)
He seems to be using his Twitter Feed much like the Russians did in 2016. Could he be getting coaching from them? He denies their influence in 2016 but seems to be using their technique to influence the Democratic process. This seems to be a technique used in the past by other politicians, but he seems to have taken it a step further like the Russians did in 2016! Could he be working in cooperation with them like in 2016?
Katherine Cagle (Winston-Salem, NC)
It' quite funny that Trump declared that Bernie was being kept from campaigning in Iowa. What about Warren and Klobouchar? Weren't they kept from campaigning?
JF (San Diego)
Neither Joe nor Bernie is perfect, but I’ll happily support either when the time comes.
Sam (Pennsylvania)
I wouldn’t call it a bad week when the second billionaire quite the Democratic primary. It has been a constant refrain for Trump pointing out that what he did was very hard — and Bloomberg just proved him right. I have no doubt that instead of attending to serious matters of State, Trump is sitting in the Oval Office watching that clip of Bloomberg licking his fingers during a major health crisis.
LA (Ray)
@Sam What Trump "did" was agree to be the figurehead for the radical christain right who are intent on installing a theocracy. It wasn't "hard" for Trump to make that Faustian deal with the hypocritical christians, its not like Donny had anything else to do except play golf
King Philip, His majesty (N.H.)
Thank you Michael Bloomberg for helping America focus on the task of removing the Russian agent from the white house. Your presence in the debates helped contrast the differences between the moderate candidates and the more liberal candidates. While Elizebeth Warren thought she was justified in badgering you, it was painfully obvious that bullying , accusing , and divisiveness are exactly what we are trying ti rid our executive branch of.
Howard (Minneapolis)
I hope that Mr. Biden surrounds himself with the very best and brightest persons with the skills to enable him to speak sensibly in debates and prepare him effectively for whatever mud Mr. Trump throws at him.
Matt (Chicago)
If Trump (and the Rep senate) decides to pursue a scorched earth attack on Hunter (to damage Joe), Nancy Pelosi (and the Dem house) needs to open hard and fast parallel hearings into all of the Trump kid’s nepotistic dealings. Of which there are legion. Make it hurt, and make it stick. Maybe the threat of having his family under hard public scrutiny will make Trump back off. Maybe it won’t. But either way, it seems Trump would be equally or more damaged in a battle over the kids; and this issue likely won’t move the needle in November.
ehillesum (michigan)
Joe is all alone now in the non-Bernie left/center and his shortcomings as a candidate will be magnified. In particular, his gaffes that appear to be age-induced are going to hurt him and he will not be insulated, as he has till now, by the shortcomings of the other candidates. And if he goes one on one with Bernie, he won’t look great. Finally, if he gets the nomination, Dem voters will be like a homeowner complaining about all the flaws of his current home, then after going to a few open houses, discovers that maybe his house isn’t so bad after all.
LA (Ray)
@ehillesum nonsense. If Trump has proven anything its the fact that "gaffes" don't matter anymore. Trump can barely form a coherent sentence, let alone articulate a substantive policy. And regardless of who gets the Democratic nomination, all guns will be focused on Trump, and he is a YUGE target with very thin defenses
GrannyM (Charlotte, NC)
@ehillesum Bernie also has some defects in the debate department
AnneEdinburgh (Scotland)
God knows I have no time for Sessions but he was one of trump’s very earliest supporters and look at the way that’s (not) being repaid. Serves him right I suppose. I remember years ago the businessman Richard Branson saying how weird a lunch was with trump, since trump spent the whole time talking about the revenge he would take on perceived enemies (enemies that Branson did not know and had not been involved with in any way). One of trump’s signatures is his extraordinary vindictiveness.
Hazlit (Vancouver, BC)
Biden is great news for Trump. Sadly, Trump will find Biden an easy opponent. Trump's week isn't looking so bad.
LA (Ray)
@Hazlit Trump is great news for Democrats. His complete failure at handling the virus outbreak clearly shows the ineptness of Republican policy of "small government". I foresee a landslide victory in November as Trump is tossed on the ash heap, a one-term, impeached anomaly fueled by the racist backlash against President Obama
GrannyM (Charlotte, NC)
@Hazlit Sure. That’s why Trump spent the run up to the SC open primary telling Republicans to cross over and vote for Sanders
Patricia Brown (San Diego)
Trump is playing with fire as he trains his justice department and FBI and senate at Hunter. He may end up getting more than he bargained for, turning Hunter into a sympathetic character. Hunter is a troubled person. Everyone knows a family with a problem child perhaps with drug or alcohol problems who makes poor decisions. Do you want to look like you are getting joy out of attacking the child who lost his mother and sister and brother and intentionally bringing pain to the parent and family? It will resonate with many families across America.
Les (SW Florida)
@Patricia Brown His justice department and his FBI? That will seal his fate. Honestly, he may come unglued before the election.
Stephen Csiszar (Carthage NC)
@Patricia Brown "Do you want to look like you are getting joy out of attacking the child who lost his mother......." Patricia, he has, and he will, and he does. Degenerate is as degenerate does, there is no bottom.
sonya (Washington)
@Les Oh dear Les, he's unglued already. He will only get worse. Watch and weep.. that this yahoo is president.
Robert Wood (Little Rock, Arkansas)
Trump hasn't tried to expand his "base" in three years, because he doesn't like going places where he might be booed. And, his actions in office have energized even complacent voters to vote for literally any opponent. Sort of reminiscent of his failed career in business, once he ran through his Daddy's money.
AutumnLeaf (Manhattan)
Biden winning is the best part of his week. The GOP has had 30+ years to fend off an attack from Joe, and they are more than willing to let him bleed slowly and make him pay for every mistake. Joe's nomination will also be a huge really call for the GOP to energize people to vote more GOP into Congress. Even if Joe would win, the GOP will make sure nothing he says gets done over 4 years of daily scandals and gridlock.
Les (SW Florida)
@AutumnLeaf More GOP in Congress? Dream on.
PK (Seattle)
@AutumnLeaf Hence the need to take back the senate.
GrannyM (Charlotte, NC)
@AutumnLeaf Sure. That’s why Trump spent the run up to the SC primary urging Republicans to vote for Sanders
Pat Choate (Tucson, Arizona)
If VP Biden gathers sufficient delegates by the end of April to guarantee him the Democratic nomination for President, I hope that Senator Sanders will end his campaign for President at that point in time. In 2016, the Senator continued his campaign up to the convention, though he knew he had lost, and by that helped elected Donald Trump. If he does not wish to split the Democratic Party again, a gracious exit from the race would be in the interest of the nation and much appreciated by those who wish to democratically remove Trump from the Presidency.
Theo (Chicago)
You write that Biden's comeback was "despite" Trump’s efforts to portray him as corrupt. But those efforts aren't aimed at Democratic primary voters, and it's foolish to think that they're failing based only on the votes of the Democratic electorate. Trump is preparing these attacks for the general election, for moderate or anti-establishment voters, many of whom weren't sold by the impeachment trial. And given Biden's poor temper and frequent gaffes, I expect they'll have a real impact. I hope Biden's campaign is prepared for that if he's the nominee, but based on what we've seen so far, I suspect that they're not. I think Trump would be happy to run against Biden.
LA (Ray)
@Theo I expect you have no evidence that "moderate or anti-establishment voters, many of whom weren't sold by the impeachment trial." and I expect you are a Trump supporter new toe the NYT comment section
GrannyM (Charlotte, NC)
@Theo Biden has a “poor temper”?? Compared to Trump? Compared to Bernie? Biden’s gaffes are baked in, by now, like Trump’s lies.
Theo (Chicago)
@LA To be clear, I was sold by the impeachment trial. I believe that Trump should have been removed from office. But only 42% of Independents and 9% of Republicans agree. (That's from FiveThirtyEight polling.)
FilligreeM (toledo oh)
I know this is off-point of this article but I will articulate it anyway it gets to some eyes who may have some inside influence for Mayor Bloomberg and Tom Steyer, who have committed dollars to help a Democratic win. Florida's republican state majority shamefully went against the people's will to try to derail felons' right to vote after serving their time. They have instilled fear that trying to vote will be another offense if the felons have not paid all debts due, court costs, etc. Is there any way for Mayor Bloomberg and/or Tom Steyer to fund a legally appropriate approach to guaranteeing or paying those debts (to a limit, of course, per felon's obligations, not for someone who owes hundreds of thousands in restitution), so these people can feel and be free to vote without further risk to their freedom? Can any lawyers propose a suitable way, so this is not "paying for votes" as the opposition surely will advance? Some escrow to the courts pending outcome of lawsuits dealing with this issue? Direct payments to the courts where the costs are relatively small? If Florida's felons, many but not all, who want to vote could vote that could sway the result to a Democratic win, given the demographics. This would serve those felons and the country more than additional radio, internet or TV ads IMO, dollar for dollar.
PK (Seattle)
"If Biden get the nomination despite Bernie being your desired candidate please do not sit home. Sitting home or voting 3rd party is a vote for Trump." Quoting Alan. Sitting here in Washington state, waiting for my chance to vote, first choice, Amy K drops out, then second choice, Mayor Pete drops out, then person whom I wanted to know more about Bloomberg drops out. What is my role in the primary election? Is my vote valued as important? Clearly not as important as someone in Ohio, Texas, Michigan, Wisconson, etc, or even American Samoa! Same thing happens in the general election. Why don't they just admit that it all comes down to a very few states and WE DO NOT HAVE A DEMOCRACY. All voices are not equal, nor are all votes.
Mikebnews (Morgantown WV)
At least you had an opportunity to vote early. The primary election here in WVa isn’t until May. Maybe that’ll give us a chance to break a logjam, but I doubt it
AutumnLeaf (Manhattan)
@PK You got that right. no matter who I vote for in NY it will not matter since it is already a foregone conclusion that this state will vote blue no matter who. So why vote at all, my voice counts for nothing.
fast/furious (DC)
@PK Vote anyway. We're going to need every Democrat and Independent in the country to help us unseat Trump. Yes I agree its not fair. But keep your eyes on the prize.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
Trump is sitting pretty. He has the status quo right where he wants them. With Bernie as his vice president, the People get a landslide victory.
John Townsend (Mexico)
GOP trump supporters including most GOP senators dismiss the Mueller investigation as now irrelevant while trumpeting the impeachment acquittal as total vindication. However Mueller said definitively on nation-wide TV that his report did not exonerate trump and that ONCE OUT OF OFFICE he was definitely liable for indictment for crimes most pointedly the deliberate obstruction of justice of which ten instances are extensively detailed in the report! This evidence has been carefully and painstakingly prepared and geared to support this eventuality. The 2020 election itself then is the critical vehicle for bringing this trump criminal travesty to a just end ... and trump knows this only too well.
Mary (Lake Worth FL)
@John Townsend I'm imagining Trump is going to become more and more unhinged the closer the election comes. I would put nothing past him. Biden should really have security to protect him.
Frank W Smith (Key West, FL)
While Trump plots and schemes, events progress apace. And he loses. The pundits say that Trump has great advantages citing the economy and stock market. A wag might note that he had those same advantages in 2018 when he single-handedly lost the House. Even a cursory glance at the results of last Tuesday shows that Joe Biden is continuing to build on the gains in the Democratic column that have come from disaffected Republicans - mostly women, but last I checked their votes count the same. The question on the table that no one raises is what happens to the Republican Party after a Trump loss? More to the point, is there a Republican Party after Trump loses? The Headline to this article might well be "...Adds to the Republican Party's Bad Week."
John B (St. Paul, MN)
@Frank W Smith The GOP is dead. Good riddance. The likes of Trump, McConnel, Jordan, Nunes, et al., make a return to normalcy all by impossible.
Ted George (Paris)
@Frank W Smith This is the first time Biden has won anything in Presidential politics in his life. And it won't last, because he is a treasure trove of incompetence, corruption and confusion. for God's sake, Obama won't even endorse him. If he does so now, it will be pitifully half-hearted.
zeno (citium)
“For months, Mr. Trump has told aides he believes he can shape the Democratic race to his own advantage by focusing on specific candidates. And he has been more overt than any incumbent in trying to influence the nominating contest of another party, training his Twitter feed on his potential rivals, and trying to deepen authentic divisions...”. This is what me must endure for the sin of trump’s election....
fast/furious (DC)
@zeno I think one reason for Biden's huge victory was that millions of us watched Trump smear Biden for months and we don't buy it. The vote was partially enthusiasm for Biden but also a repudiation of what Trump claims is reality. We all know Trump's lying.
LA (Ray)
@zeno easy solution: dump your Twitter account
Allison (Colorado)
I'm working very hard to keep in mind that Trump is still president and that his administration is making decisions on a daily basis that can change the trajectory of this pandemic. Wishing/praying/whatever for him to do what is right is difficult, but his failure is our nation's loss. Just sayin'.
Padfoot (Portland, OR)
"The president’s aides said they are now preparing for a scorched-earth campaign against Mr. Biden in the coming months" A scorched-earth campaign against Hillary Clinton worked because, rightly or wrongly, her integrity had been attacked for 25 years. This is why the email story had so much traction. Joe Biden has some flaws in his past, but attacks on his integrity won't work as they did with Clinton. Like Secretary Clinton's husband, Biden can feel people's pain, and in his case he has felt the pain too. Trying to leverage Ukraine against Biden will fail because most people don't believe he is corrupt. This approach would also keep the story out in the open. That really doesn't help Trump, who is viewed as corrupt by a majority of Americans.
Mark (Delaware)
@Padfoot I wish I was as optimistic as you. If you thought the Benghazi noise machine was bad, wait for the non-stop hearings in the senate this year on all things Burisma etc.
Jerseytime (Montclair, NJ)
@Padfoot And, Trump's integrity is now common knowledge to all. And, its much, much lower than Biden's.
LA (Ray)
@Mark There are no dead American soldiers in the Burisma thing though.
TheraP (Midwest)
It gets tiring and old that trump always wants to be the center of attention. But with this virus and now, a Democratic electorate unifying around Biden, suddenly tump is neither the center of the news nor able to control events. Instead the missteps of the White House are on display when it comes to dealing with the virus. He claims victories when it’s evident there is insufficient testing, shortages of essential infection control equipment, and organizational incompetence flowing from his administration. He seems to be flailing on every front. And his usual ploys of generating chaos as way to distract attention no longer work in the face of a public tired of his antics and “on” to his childish ploys. Meanwhile the Democratic Party is unifying into one pointed spear - aimed directly at taking back our Republic. Trump has met his Waterloo in the Virus, over which he has no control and suddenly clarified Opposition, backed by a real Billionaire with unlimited funds, a dynamite organization able to generate ads at warp speed and a ground game like nobody’s business.
Emma (Los Angeles)
Biden is the candidate Trump wants. No matter what the facts are, Trump’s base believes Biden is corrupt and he’s planted a seed of doubt about Biden into the minds of thousands of other Americans, even if they aren’t die hard Trump supporters. Maybe Biden could beat Trump, but just like he did with Clinton, Trump will tear down Biden with disinformation and use his political career against him.
Irrelevant (USA)
@Emma Absolutely not. Trump wants Bernie. He figures he could easily win running a campaign targeting Bernie as a "socialist". Trump's internal polling showed him that he didn't want to run against Biden. If Trump wanted Biden, he wouldn't have tried to obtain "oppo research" from a foreign government to challenge Biden, and he wouldn't be bragging about Bernie surging before or complaining that Bernie is being cheated. Instead, he would have explained why Bernie wasn't surging at all and would have happily stayed silent if Bernie was being cheated for the benefit of Biden if he actually wanted Biden to be the nominee. That's his m.o. It's not complicated. It's grade school level strategy based on the same polling everyone else was seeing over the twelve months.
Danny Salvatore’s (Philadelphia)
Sure, Trump will attack Biden’s forty year career but I think people will understand that he has lied more times in three years than Biden has in forty.
Bollingsr (Maryland, USA)
@Emma Few people will care about what Trump says about Biden or Sanders! What will count for much more will be Trump's bad behavior. Additionally, It would appear that Trump's attention span has restricted further since 2016. How can his handlers possibly be prepared for a debate or any public venue that is not staged specifically for his psychopathological restless mouth syndrome.
Tom Rose (Maine)
Let us all hope that each and every week for the next 8 months is a bad week for Trump. He more than deserves every dismal week he has earned. And to the Democrats, please find a way to unite behind a team that can win back democracy in November. There have been lots of good candidates with great ideas. It is time to capitalize on the best and put forward a unified front. The divisiveness of Bernie will ultimately drag it out, and it will cost the election.
liz (columbia, sc)
@Tom Rose Why is Bernie always blamed for divisiveness, when it is the DNC and its corporatist allies who have been carrying out attacks on Bernie through every pundit and from every perspective and with every distortion that they can think of ever since he did so well in the early primaries. Meanwhile, in every forum, Bernie continues to remind voters of the importance of supporting the Democratic nominee, whoever that may be. Why not give Bernie credit, once in a while, for being a good person who cares about this country and its people?
fast/furious (DC)
@liz He does. But every time I hear Bernie say that the establishment is trying to finish him off, I worry that he'll keep his campaign going far past the point he should drop out - if it comes to that. There are lots of good things about Bernie but we all know he isn't a team player. And to beat Trump, we all need to get behind the nominee and push together. This election isn't about democratic socialism. It's about getting rid of Trump. I have serious reservations that Bernie puts beating Trump first. Eyes on the prize.
Sue the Cat (Reynolds County, Missouri)
I find myself surprisingly sorry for Jeff Sessions. Surprising only because I have seldom felt anything positive for Sessions (I did respect his integrity for recusing himself from the Russian investigation). Sessions is a man who was totally dumped upon by Trump yet still believed he could win his former boss's forgiveness by running again for the Senate--and what does Trump do? He carelessly tosses more screed at him. Sessions end has come, thanks to Trump.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
While this may have been viewed as a "bad week for Trump" but so many of us view these past 3+ years as the worse even endured by ANY president.
Jeff (Denver)
@Marge Keller If he wasn't responsible for caving the roof in upon himself on a regular basis through his words and deeds, those of us in the majority might be able to summon up an iota of sympathy for him. If. Trump is like the dog who caught the car, but after chasing it from the front. More painful, and he still hasn't a clue what to do with it.
John Harper (Carlsbad, CA)
@Marge Keller Don't you mean the worst 3 years every American citizen has endured?
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@John Harper Yes I do. Thanks.
Gdk (Boston)
Trump would have loved to run against any of the Democrats but Biden will be the toughest for him to beat. That said it still leaves Biden as a weak candidate .We live in interesting times.
Jeanne-dArc (Boston, MA)
@Gdk Voters will elect an honorable President in November - a Democrat. Have you heard any parent in the last 3.5 years express, “ Gee, I hope my child will grow up to be just like trump...” Me neither.
LA (Ray)
@Gdk How/why is Biden "weak"? Trump is an adulterous, disgraced game show host with a history of business failure who inherited all his money from a rich daddy. Joe Biden is the exact opposite of that.
Gdk (Boston)
@Jeanne-dArc Policies matter .I would be very unhappy is my two daughters would marry a man like Trump.
Jonathan Penn (Ann Arbor, MI)
Has anyone else actually watched a debate and listened to Joe Biden wander aimlessly through something resembling an answer to a question? The man is frighteningly incoherent too often for anyone to see his candidacy as anything other than something resembling a centrist rush to failure. Trump is not worried about taking on Joe Biden. You cannot counter passion, even Trump's and Trump's supporters' enormously crazy passion, with the mild mannered milquetoast of a Biden. Think Mondale, Doukakis, Kerry, and Clinton. Biden is a virtual guarantee of a Trump re-election. I wish it were otherwise but it isn't.
Jeanne-dArc (Boston, MA)
@Jonathan Penn This? This is your criticism of Biden??? Good Grief - have you not been paying attention to the mindless meanderings of trump these past years? At least we know Biden is intelligent and has a soul!
LA (Ray)
@Jonathan Penn Hilarious. The irony of you referring to "wander aimlessly through something resembling an answer to a question" and "man is frighteningly incoherent too often" and not seeing the fact you are LITERALLY describing Trump indicates, to me, that your opinions are ill-founded.
Jonathan Penn (Ann Arbor, MI)
@Jeanne-dArc Unfortunately I have been paying attention. I fully agree that Trump is mindless and raving. Unfortunately it endlessly engages and motivates his base. Biden is not capable of doing the same. Trump's re-election will be beyond a disaster but Biden's being the democratic nominee virtually guarantees it.
zeno (citium)
“The president’s aides said they are now preparing for a scorched-earth campaign...”. it is our earth that they are scorching....
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
If Biden performs at the level of his “victory speech” last night in California Trump will demolish him.Biden was loud unfocused and rambling.Biden Must tighten and improve his delivery. Way too folksy. No one questions his decency and empathy. He must focus which can be difficult at his age. Trust me.
Desire Trails (Berkeley)
@Milton Lewis Oh really? Could he be any more unfocused or rambling than the man-child currently in the white house? Not likely.
LA (Ray)
@Milton Lewis "loud, unfocused and rambling" describes EVERY Trump rally, and forgive me but I have no interest in "trusting you" when you overlook such obvious irony and hypocrisy
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
@Desire Trails For the most part you are correct. But Trump is laser sharp and focused when he is on the verbal attack.
Martha Goff (Sacramento)
Trump is such an unhappy soul overall. Most of his days as president, he’s been angry about something or other. Why on earth would he want to run again?
Bobbie (Minnesota)
@Martha Goff To stay out of jail?
Alan Wahs (Atlanta)
Because he will most likely go to prison soon if he’s not re-elected. A powerful inducement indeed.
fast/furious (DC)
@Martha Goff Why? $$$$$ Being president is Trump's personal piggy bank.
thoughtful in new york (NY)
No. Bloomberg was Trump's nightmare - competent in office, rich enough to slough off any attacks, and a key representative of the group Trump really really really wants most to impress but cannot - and Bloomberg's out. Biden, with his inability to concentrate for 30 seconds, and his son Hunter as an Achilles Heel, will be much easier for Trump.
LA (Ray)
@thoughtful in new york what "achilles heel"? Hunter hasn't done anything criminal, unlike Trump's kids who are neck deep in their father's criminality
Jerseytime (Montclair, NJ)
@thoughtful in new york Why is Biden's son such a drawback in a race against a someone who's record as a private person and as President reads like that of a mob boss? He appointed his children to government posts, for heavens' sake!
thoughtful in new york (NY)
@LA I didn't say Hunter was guilty of any criminality. I said he was an Achilles Heel - a weak point at which Biden can be attacked. Fairly or unfairly. Wait until you see what the Trump campaign dreams up and alleges.
Angela Minton (Oklahoma)
Joe Biden represents a return to—if not normalcy—then at least a bit of peace—a respite from the 24-7 drama the president feeds on. Every day a new conflict or controversy. Trump is like that relative we all have in our families who seeks attention by creating constant chaos and toxicity—continually stirring the pot—screaming: Look at ME! I don’t know about the rest of the country but I am emotionally exhausted—worn out—and politics aside—I can’t spend another four years like this! Therapists would say to walk away from a toxic relationship but the election is the only way I know to escape this president. Whether Democrat or Republican—I don’t care. Just not Donald Trump. PLEASE!
Tut Junior (ATX)
@Angela Minton the endless Trump grate is wearing the whole world down.
Sam (Pennsylvania)
“But futures markets bounced up with the news of Mr. Biden’s victories, after he won states across the South and Midwest by large margins and dealt a serious blow to the prospects of Senator Bernie Sanders.” Seriously? You believe Biden’s campaign is what drove the market rebound? That’s the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever seen in these pages.
LA (Ray)
@Sam The market craves certainty. With Biden's surge and other candidates dropping out the democratic nominee is more "certain". Now whats with the rhetorical questions?
Jerseytime (Montclair, NJ)
@Sam It is incumbent on you to provide a reasonably supported alternative reason.
Sam (Pennsylvania)
@Sam I’ve got to eat some crow on this. Evidently Healh Care stocks rallied because fears of comrade Bernie socializing healthcare abated with Biden’s wins. That said, I submit the quoted text is deceptive/misleading.
Paul Wortman (Providence)
Trump's talent for sowing divisiveness is already on display as he tries to float the cockamamie conspiracy theory that impeachment was a plot by the Democrats to "Stop Sanders!" This will be the main problem for Joe Biden to deal with if he wins the nomination and does not work with Sanders to unite the party as Hillary abjectly failed to do in 2016. It will take a totally united and energized Democratic Party to generate the huge turnout needed to defeat Trump with his talent for sliming his opponents along with help from Russia, Voter ID laws, purges of voting rolls, restricting voting hours, locating polling places for minorities in hard to reach areas, and the last line of defense--his potential victimization cry of a "rigged election."
RickP (ca)
The Trump Smear Machine is revving up. Neither Biden nor Bernie are perfect candidates. There will be plenty of grist for Trump's smearing. But, even if there wasn't, he'd lie about them. The issue isn't what Trump is going to say. The issue is how the Democratic nominee responds. I believe it needs to be in a full throat roar about Trump's incompetence and criminal behavior. Remarkably, none of his opponents, including the 2016 Republican field, have yet done that. Where is hour long info-mercial with video of lie after lie after lie? Where are the women, including teenagers, who have accused him of sexual misbehavior? Where is the response to his name-calling making the point that he does it because he's completely ignorant about the workings of government? He can't even speak intelligently about any issue whatsover, so he name-calls? Why don't we hear that every day?
Dara O'Brien (New York City)

First the coronavirus, then the falling stock market, then add to that the Taliban deal that fell like a lead balloon. You know what they say, you get what you deserve. What he should be doing is hiring people that are smarter then him, oh wait that's everybody.
Gdk (Boston)
@BTO Obama and the generals mislead us about progress in Afghanistan Trump is getting us out of our longest war.I am not a great fan of his personality but love his policies.Give me the charm of Obama and policies of Trump and we have a new Lincoln.
Tjcolorado (Colorado)
@BTO add to that list Iran now has enough uranium to produce nuclear weapons.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
@Gdk , I think Trump will be out of office before this country is out of Afghanistan.
Nancy (Great Neck)
I will support the Democratic candidate, but Mr. Biden strikes me as having serious problems and I am in no way confident he will be the strongest candidate or even be strong enough. The New York Times thought Ms. Warren was the strongest candidate, but the Times was awfully wrong. There is need for careful consideration, not gloating.
Bill (California)
I like Joe and voted for him yesterday. He will need to come up with a simple and coherent response to the barrage that Trump will direct to him about "corruption", as ironic as that is. And also, don't enagage in any drinking games based on the utterance of "Burisma" by Trump and enablers, unless you enjoy being on the floor drunk.
WeHadAllBetterPayAttentionNow (Southwest)
While people are dying, Trump is lying. Why? Because lying, cheating and stealing are the only things he knows how to do.
Steven of the Rockies (Colorado)
Goodness Gracious, let us hope that Vice President Biden does not take offense from Mr. Trump sending Guiliani and William Barr on a wild goose chase to illegally extort the Ukraine government to manufacture dirt on Senator Biden' and his surviving son.
HoodooVoodooBlood (San Francisco, CA)
How long will it take all Americans to see that 'Liddle' Donald Trump has destroyed everyone and everything around him, his entire life. Little wonder he hides his taxes, his banking, his affairs, his payoff, his bribes, his blackmail attempts, imposes and enforces his NDA's, his net lack of wealth. The fellow lacks ethics, morality, honor... he destroys the law, the environment. He lacks Dignitas. Sophocles wrote; "Not by my fire, never to share my thoughts, who does these things." Down in Texas, they have an expression for this kind of fellow. They say, "He's all hat and no cattle".
Jim Smith (Martinez, California)
Well my county (Contra Costa here in San Francisco's East Bay) just announced their first Corona Virus case, an elderly woman in critical condition. Buckle up Trump.
Gdk (Boston)
@Jim Smith Corona infection is clearly Trumps fault.Maybe the carrier officers at the CDC and NIH should make it clear that our preparation was lacking because of Trump. Many Trump haters hope that the economy will tank, we will all get sick, the stock market will go to bear market and peace efforts in Afghanistan fail.
Mark (UK)
@Gdk actually it’s just you we hope that for, not everyone.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
Funny, if it weren't so sad, how 'ignoramus' and demagogue Trump, having no values of his own (none other than the ease of his lying!), continues to bite, rabidly, right and left, always on the attack, trying to find excuses and scapegoats to hide his own insignificance, and incompetence; a corrupt bully, expert in the blame game. What a disgrace is Trump for this nation...and the world, the more obvious as time advances and the coronavirus dethrones his arrogant stance. Not even the Stock Market can save him this time. Let's hope his rampant abuse of power becomes his farewell letter.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Trump never even tries to control events, he does not even bother to become informed about them. He does not care about the real effects of any events upon anyone. Trump only wants to convince people to focus upon him or to accept some perception of events which influence them to behave as he wants. Thus he says stupid things which people working for him must contradict because his utterances are so ridiculous.

A bad week for Trump is a good week for all things decent.

I have no idea how Biden’s comeback is a worry for Trump.

Nobody is listening to Trump anymore. Nobody listens to him about the COVID-19 virus, nobody listens to him about the stock market/economy, nobody listens to him about Afghanistan, nobody listens to him about his campaign or re-election...he is a bumbling lying buffoon. Why bother paying attention to one word coming out of the White House America is looking forward to November and the new administration in January 2021. Go Joe!

Poor thing. Time to skulk off to Palm Beach and wrap those little hands around some long, stiff sticks.
cherrylog754 (Atlanta,GA)
You can almost smell it now. Biden takes the White House in January, 2021, and Trump heads for his gangster hideout in Mar a Largo. Then, then SDNY gets real busy with those tax records right after Kamala Harris takes office as AG. Don't forget to vote this November.
Zozola (California)
44 1 must be so happy with the results. We can see that Biden is brain dead at best, and his Obama ticket will galvanized the Trumpers to vote in mass. Dems may as well vote for Trumph, cause it’s basically the same producers in charge.

Trump is a corrupt, narcissistic, oaf, with scant intelligence and acumen. He is an anomaly, a pathological liar, who's time will soon be over. Then the white supremacists, the gun nuts and the religious extremists can go back into their closets. America can yet be saved.
RealTRUTH (AR)
Trump hasn’t got a chance. The entire world knows that he is full of “—it” and his lies have already devastated this country and gotten him Impeached. I think, and I may be giving them the benefit of an unfounded doubt, that even Republicans can see through the facade of this empty sociopath. He is not a president by any measure. He has only divided this country according to his boss Putin’s playbook and made us a pariah on this planet. If that is “making America great”, then Hitler must have been his idol. Roy Cohn certainly was, and he was a Dementor of cosmic proportion. The only things Americans, ALL Americans, must remember throughout what is about to be a disgrace of a political war, are that TRUMP LIES, is INCOMPETENT, acts only in HIS best interest and Doesn’t give a damn about anyone or anything but himself. This is nothing more than a scripted TV show for him - one in which he is the self-declared villain/hero. It’s WWE on steroids. Not so for patriots like Joe Biden - he has proven his worth for decades just as Trump has proven his criminality.
Susan Fitzwater (Ambler, PA)
And the spectacle goes on New York Times. And sakes, I have my thoughts. (1) The utter shabbiness of the incumbent. It never fails to amaze me. Never. Mr. Sessions--for whom (believe me) I have no use at all--but Mr. Sessions was the first senator, was he not? to throw his support to Mr. Donald J. Trump. Oh my goodness! A smidgen--a tiny SMIDGEN--of loyalty from his sometime chief MIGHT have been expected. A slight, all but imperceptible DULLING of the streams of insult and vituperation MIGHT have been expected. A touch of CLASS. A display of decent feeling. Some manly sympathy. Decency? Spell it. Class? This president ain't GOT no class. He never did. He never will. And the veritable ROLL CALL of silly, childish would-be pejorative nicknames goes on. That sometime aide was right: I think most Americans (apart from this President's ever loud, ever voluble "base")--most Americans are "sick of the buffoonery." I know I am. Don't get too complacent, Mr. Biden. Don't do a Thomas Dewey from way back in '48. Of whom it was said: he was a little TOO easy-going. TOO relaxed. TOO detached and "above it all." Mr. Truman--"Give 'em hell, Harry!"--Mr. Truman wasn't. Dear me, no. He gave 'em hell. He won.

is this an op ed or news reporting? who knows! who cares anymore its the same thing right
Brian H. Bragg (River Valley Arkansas)
@Concerned Citizen When a public official’s currency of choice is the outright and unapologetic lie, it is the job of responsible journalists to point this out. This president’s egregious misstatements of fact and his baseless fabrications went unchallenged by reporters for too long. We’re wiser now. Calling out lies and disproving them with facts is not editorializing, it is reporting. The old myth that “objective” reporters should merely parrot all claims as equally plausible and stifle their own knowledge and judgement in the name of “fairness” is exactly the kind of news coverage that empowers demagogues and scoundrels. The lie exposed at the outset never gets the chance to travel before truth puts on its boots, as the saying goes. Killing the lie at birth should be considered an honest undertaking for any news reporter. By the way, I also am a “Concerned Citizen”, but I use my real name and I am not a professional troll in the employ of the enemy.

@Concerned Citizen your logical fallacy is called "false equivalency". Please try to do better, for yourself and for our country

@WR Brilliant! Hopefully November 3, 2020 will be his worst day EVER! I plan on helping that happen by voting BLUE, no matter who.
Jeff (California)
@WR I voting for Trump's worst day in his life.
Roland (Vancouver)
I am really unsure whether Mr. Biden is the stronger candidate, is a larger threat to the incumbent I understand that Mr. Sanders lacks centrist appeal, due to his emphasis on populism and combativeness. But his message of social democracy would be highly viable for most middle class voters - I do not understand why he has been unable to pivot slightly, given his undeniable progressive credentials. Trump was to a large extent elected because the electorate was unhappy with the status quo. I am unsure whether Trump's shortcomings will be obvious enough for the electorate to enable the victory of an incoherent status quo/status quo ante candidate.
Rick Torrey (Rhode Island)
Trump wants us to think he's supporting Bernie so we'll think he's afraid of Biden when he's really worried about Bernie. I get it now.
LA (Ray)
@Roland "because the electorate was unhappy with the status quo" <--- blame the Republican Congress. Unless you were referring to the fact that we had a black man in the Oval Office.
LA (Ray)
@Hjb Uhhhhmmm "the electorate" voted for HRC. She received the second largest vote total in USA history. Meanwhile Trump's victory was by the thinnest margin in modern US history, 68k votes in three states. People ARE "warned", we have all seen Trump's incompetence and the damage he has done to our Democracy. He is no longer an "unknown"
Charles Kaufmann (Portland, ME)
Meanwhile, while Trump and the Republicans continue their climate change denial and their onslaught on environmental safeguards, the instability in financial markets caused by the coronavirus crisis serves as a forewarning of the total financial collapse that would follow a devastating worldwide environmental catastrophe.
Robert (Out west)
Gee, maybe we should vote him gone.
vince williams (syracuse, utah)
@Charles Kaufmann In 12 years as per A.O.C.?
Nate (USA)
@Charles Kaufmann The financial markets will not collapse catastrophically, any more than the environment will. The collapse will take decades. It will happen slowly, but still fast enough to see in a human lifetime. The Four Horsemen of our Apocalypse may include the current Covid-19 plague, as well as plagues to come, but the other three horsemen are mounted and on their way: famine, flood, and war. The cause isn't climate change; that's just a symptom. The cause is global human overpopulation. We are at about three times the Earth's carrying capacity. Something has to give. It has already started to give, and it will give out in the next fifty years or so. There is nothing that we can do about it as voters. There is nothing that America as a country can do about it. No American election can change the outcome. It's global. Don't even pretend that we have control. We don't and we never will.
Miguel G (Lx)
Democrats seem to be more committed in preventing Sanders from gaining the nomination, than removing Trump from office.
George (Houston)
@Miguel G Amazingly, Democrats can do two things at once.
John Townsend (Mexico)
@Miguel G It's both and related reasons ... Sanders would clearly be an easier target for trump's venom which readily riles up his entrenched base of support. Dismissing Sanders as a communist with a relentless FOX news chorus in tow would really get them going
jeffk (Virginia)
@Miguel G no, the voters have spoken. There was not secret plot. People voted their preference. That is democracy on action.
John Townsend (Mexico)
FOX news (essentially trump’s propaganda agency) is now fully engaged in a concerted cover up to camouflage just how badly managed the COVID-19 response has been in the US. The trump administration over the last three years has been drastically cutting budgets and gutting public health agencies, eliminating preparedness teams, and abruptly dismissing expertise. It’s clearly a deliberate effort to dismantle the important measures Obama made to effectively protect the nation from the 2014 Ebola infection crisis. And as with all things Obama, trump is doing these things vengefully, recklessly and surreptitiously. The nation is already paying a huge price with the looming emergence of a similar infection crisis, the COVID-19 outbreak and undoubtedly there is more to come.
fact or friction (maryland)
In the general election, I'd vote for a tree stump, if it were the Dem nominee, in order to dump Trump. I expect nearly all Dems, many independents, and even a few Republicans feel the same. But, I'm not feeling confident about Biden. He's even more inarticulate than ever, says little of substance, seems significantly out of touch, is about as status quo as you can get, and he keeps harping on about working with Republicans, as if he's been under a rock for the last 15 years, including the 8 he served as VP. To be brutally honest, Biden doesn't have much more going for him than a tree stump. Biden better pick a really strong, really diverse, and really inspiring team, starting with his VP pick (Stacey Abrams, please!), and including his cabinet picks, which he'll need to announce BEFORE the general election if he's going to have a serious chance of winning. Otherwise, I don't see how he does any better than Clinton, even factoring in Clinton's baggage and Trump's now record as president.
grennan (green bay)
@fact or friction Very well put. A better choice for vp would be Cong. Ami Bera, CA-7 since 2013. He is a general practice physician, the son of Indian immigrants, born in Orange County and a former county health officer in the central part of the state.
Andrew (Chicago)
@fact or friction I agree with you. Biden is an even worse pick than Hillary Clinton was in 2016. He has almost all of the same types of baggage (corruption allegations, a pro-war record, a pro-Wall Street record, and a former tough on crime stance), but with an even longer record. He is also is a worse debater, worse at making coherent points, worse at taking criticism, and has even less appeal to young people. He's in obvious cognitive decline, frequently mixing up the names of people and repeating lies about his own past (he never participated in the civil rights movement). It's actually really sad to see, but we're all at the mercy of his ego now. His only advantage over Hillary is that he's a man and won't be subject to the same sexist attacks. Trump will make mincemeat of him in debates and in advertising. Trump will say that he got troops out of Afghanistan, while Biden voted to send them to Iraq. Trump will muddy the waters and use Biden's history to make it seem like they're both equally corrupt, depressing turnout. Of course it will be almost all lies, but there is enough truth that the media will cover it and some people will buy it. Meanwhile Trump's cultlike followers will vote. I'm feeling a strong sense of deja vu. The Democratic establishment is pushing us into a 2016 scenario again, but with an even weaker candidate.
scott (canada)
It would be nice to see Sanders bow out gracefully and admonish his base to get behind a concerted effort to toss Trump into the the incinerator. Bidens experience. Bernie's fervor. Bloomberg's wallet. Add in a progressive running mate and Lock Trump Up.
Tom Rose (Maine)
Bernie will never step back and support Biden. He is all about him and leftest ideals that will never work in America. This unfortunate, because if there was ever a time there was a need to make a concerted effort to rid the country of the menace that is Donald Trump, that time is now.
liz (columbia, sc)
@scott The progressive running mate is a must. Hillary's choice of Tim Kaine was a slap in the face to progressives, and made it difficult for them to rally behind her.
Casey S (New York)
Will never vote for the man who ran Anita Hill into a buzz saw. Or gave the eulogy at Strom Thurmond’s funeral. Or opposed bussing in the 70’s. Or repeatedly bragged about his efforts to cut social security. And on and on and on and on..... DNC, if this is your standard bearer than you deserve to lose.
WeThePeople (Where Truth Still Counts)
Trump and Company may be gearing up to employ a scorched earth policy yet again, but this time voters have the benefit of 3+ years of his performance history: exhausting tweeting histrionics, a chaotic administration, a revolving door with staff, a tenuous relationship with the truth, and a boatload of whatever-the-opposite-of endorsements-are from career public servants - across the political spectrum. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016, and that was before he showed his true colors. Voters are exhausted already from his boorishness, so a little scorched earth here and there may serve to convince a few more good Republicans to stay home on election day and let the chips fall where they may. We can only hope.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
@WeThePeople Yeah but the do-nothing-for-the-People corporate Democrats have thirty years of toxic capitalism behind them. What about that? Hillary only barely got the popular vote - with the help of 80% of Progressives voting for her. That 80% sure won't be voting for status quo Biden. And especially not after the clueless Moderates disparaged Progressives as Bernie Bros - the future of their party - for years. With Biden and the help of their mainstream media, the Moderates have dug their own grave.
Thomas (Michigan)
On one hand, Biden performed well with some pivotal demographics (relative to Hillary in 2016), so that's promising. But on the other - I can't see Biden effectively countering Trump's brutish attack style. Compare Biden's 2012 VP debate against Ryan with his recent performances. Yes he's always been gaffe-prone, and yes he has a stutter, but even still, he is no where near as sharp, or "with it," as he was eight years ago. And I find that concerning.
mwh (WA)
@Thomas But he isn’t trump so he has that going for him.
John Harper (Carlsbad, CA)
@Thomas You don't need to be a genius to be sharper than Trump. Name calling and lies are not good talking points.
jim roberts (kincardine)
@Thomas As far as Biden's alleged verbal gaffes go I offer only one word in response: covfefe
Steve Reid (Tulsa, OK)
With Biden winning the Democrats are ensuring a Trump victory. Biden has lost his mind due to old age. There's no hope for the Democrats now.
Steve (SW Michigan)
@Steve Reid Biden stutters, and struggles getting his words out some times. Trump can't read, and wants only one or two powerpoint charts in a briefing, with pictures only. Biden is a big step up, all things considered.
Matt (Chicago)
Biden isn’t quite as sharp as he was, but he’s still plenty sharp to take down Trump. He just needs to be moderately competent, consensus-focused, and a decent human. That should be enough to knock off Trump this cycle.
Jeanette (Brooklyn, NY)
I don't believe Trump has ever developed the strategy of "Have a Plan B." He just hammers away at faulty positions, as if repetition will validate them. His belittling of everyone from military patriots to presidential hopefuls is now just so much hot air. With the exception of rallying his die-hard followers, a base that has not grown dramatically, most Americans now tune out when he starts a rant. For those who hoped Trump would grow into his office, clearly he did not, nor does he show any capacity to do so in the future. Surely, there are some Republicans who see the harm he has done both domestically and internationally. Economy, the issue for which his followers sing his praises, may well be his undoing, disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak.
bes (VA)
"In a moment of uncertainty, Mr. Trump appeared to be grasping at the equivalent of comfort food: attacking Mr. Sessions." Thanks to whoever came up with this wonderful line.
Wilbur Clark (BC)
Super Tuesday was surprisingly good for Trump. In what is essentially a one horse republican nomination race, massive numbers of voters turned out for Trump. Trump's performance yesterday substantially eclipsed that of President Obama in 2012 and GWB in 2004. The dems need to deal with the reality that Trump may do far better in 2020 than he did in 2016 with real down ballot effects on the democrats.
Girish Kotwal (Louisville, KY)
This News Analysis is incorrect. Biden 's comeback was a response to Bernie's surge and fear and panic among the Democrats that Bernie actually could win the Democratic nomination. Super Tuesday and the rising stock market is great news for Trump not a bad week. Gaffe prone Biden cannot hold a candle to Trump and he will be defeated even with the money of Bloomberg. Bernie is not dead, there is still Michigan and Pennsylvania and 30 other state primaries and he has undying enthusiastic support and so Biden supporters should not start assuming that Biden will be the nominee leave alone getting the white house. Trump won all the super Tuesday primaries and will win the nomination within a month. So keep dreaming M&A.
Robert (Out west)
We did read the part where Trump’s been trying to push every one of your, “thoughts,” Girish.
Andy (NYC)
Trump winning a primary that is essentially uncontested as an incumbent is not newsworthy. Everyone knows Trump is popular with his base. Dems are fighting for the votes of independents in the general election, not trying to convert Trump’s base.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
@Andy Bernie already has 12% of Trump's base - those Bernie supporters who voted Trump in 2016. He also has the Independents, in fact, he's the leader of the Independent Party. And Bernie beats Trump right now in Trump's six states. As for Biden, he has nothing except the states that will invariably vote for Trump. The Democrats would rather self-righteously lose than win.
Jenny (Virginia)
A Sustainable Society. A way forward. When a government works to provide laws and regulations, such as Health Care, EPA, oversight by outside groups, strong educational standards, environmental protections which have proven to be good for the country, then we have a strong society. Healthy citizens. Educated citizens which means apprenticeships, vocational work, community colleges, universities, learned-this-from-my dad, mom, uncle, sister. Working citizens, and not working-poor. A viable salary, practical to purchase goods and services, habitats and transportation. How can any of these be bad for a society? Everyone who has what is necessary can also achieve what is wanted. It is working people who contribute the most to a society. If we really believed that. Wealthy America keeps it. Working America spreads it around. Money is like manure - no good unless you spread it around. Vote. The life of this country depends on it. The Constitution is not simply words written in iron gall ink or parchment. This came from men (well, sorry, but that is how it was and you may never find such a group again) who thought extremely well. They were not seers or wizards who could know the decades to come. That is why there are Amendments to the Constitution. That is why we have agencies like the EPA or the CDC. Therefore, we need, require, want, an administration which sees that, hears that, gets experienced people whose loyalty is for the country and the Constitution.
osavus (Browerville)
It will be important for the Democratic candidate to go on the attack against trump. No more of this "when they go low we will go high". Attack and don't look back should be this year's Democratic theme.
vince williams (syracuse, utah)
@osavus Biden or Bernie. No have no idea of the scope of the fight that Trump will un-leach on the Dems. I provide hundreds to suggestions to the White House weekly for ammunition and I'm just a lowly middle class dude. Biden will be destroyed. One example, look at Iran today after Biden & Obama made that great deal. There's plenty more!
Steve Davies (Tampa, Fl.)
Trump should have a bad week every week, but Biden winning primaries isn't at all bad for Trump. Biden has many huge flaws as a candidate. Not just his voting record in favor of war, against women's reproductive rights, against desegregation, against Wall Street regulation--Biden also seems to have cognitive problems. For example, last night, he confused his sister for his wife and vice versa. His speech patterns make him sound confused and weak. The problems with Hunter Biden are also ripe for Trump to exploit. I see this as another potential massacre, similar to how Trump beat Hillary in 2016. And many people who back FDR 2.0 (Bernie Sanders) are unlikely to vote for Biden.
MMNY (NY)
@Steve Davies Bernie Sanders' supporters appear to have no real problem with Donald Trump. Their chosen enemy is the DNC, which Sanders' mooches off when he needs to. I have no faith in the Sanders' cult in terms of ridding Trump from office--after all, Trump and Sanders are the flip side of the same coin.
Tim Kane (Mesa, Arizona)
Biden can't complete a sentence and had a hard time distinguishing between his sister and his wife last night. Furthermore with his own son taking benefits from his dad's position, Biden can't press a personal corruption case against Trump. And all Trump has to do during a debate it mention Biden's son and Biden has emotional meltdowns. I'm quite sure that Trump is doing a jig this morning. He's running against Hillary 2.0 If the economy is good, and it is now, then Trump wins in a walk.
bustersgirl (Oakland, CA)
@Tim Kane: The economy is good? Really? I would have to disagree with you on that.
Glory (NJ)
Like trumps kids and son-in-law aren’t profiting with daddy in the White House? Don Junior wrote a book that the Republican Party is buying because nobody else wants it. Isn’t it time to stop having the pot and kettle call each other names?
sharon (worcester county, ma)
@Tim Kane The biggest difference is that Hunter Biden was a private citizen. A bit different than the nepotism and grifting we're seeing in the trump Whitehouse!
KR (NY, NY)
Head-to-head polls between Biden and Trump show Trump winning the election as of today. This seems like good news for him.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Trump has evaded the consequences of his acts with the help of money, his whole life. He really has no fear nor concern about consequences.
K (Florida)
I implore Mike Bloomberg to spend money on ads that show the American people that Trump's kids have jobs they don't deserve either if he wants to keep attacking Hunter Biden! Let's shine the spotlight on HIS family and make it clear Trump's concerns about corruption and nepotism are paper thin. Ivanka, Jared, Don Jr...list goes on.
K (Florida)
@Gdk Michael Bloomberg isn't afraid of Trump, he has money and is committed to spending 1 billion dollars to defeat him. His ads wouldn't be attacking Ivanka and Jared etc per say, but rather illustrating Trump's apparent disregard for double standards. This is evidenced by his obsession with Biden's son having a job because of his father, when it sure doesn't seem to be an issue when it benefits his family. I think the more ads run showing people he is a hack, the better for everyone who wants to make an informed voting decision come November. Apologies, not sure what the Warren portion of your comment was in response to.
Gdk (Boston)
@K Warren is a nightmare. If I was Bloomberg I would think twice about helping the party of Warren.Bloomberg is a better man than that so he might actually help the ticket. after the terrible treatment he received.Attacking Ivanka ,Jarred and the rest of the Trumps is a loosing proposition. What the never Trumps need is good policies .Strong military to keep the peace .No nukes Iran, trade agreements that serve us well.Criminal reform ,border security, freedom to have private health insurance, lower drug prices.Get out of Iraq Afghanistan and Syria as soon as we can.Instead discussing policies Warren focused on dirty jokes and sexually demeaning jokes by Bloomberg. No wonder she came in third in her home state.
Plenny Wingo (Florida)
Obviously the dull-normal trump is forgetting that his elevated status aside, he is still a 3rd-rate TV comb-over and always will be.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
@Plenny Wingo That's true but he also happens to be President with a solid base of over 60,000,000 voters, and in total control of all the levers of government power. He's also a genius, of sorts.
Eric (New York)
If Trump brings up any more nonsense about Hunter Biden all Joe has to do is take out a copy of his own previously disclosed tax returns and firmly demand that the president do the same. Biden is also within is rights to point out that the president's children are scouring the globe for real estate deals to benefit a family corporation that was never placed in escrow. The conflicts of interest from these transactions make Hunter Biden's poor judgement seem pretty innocent by comparison.
Butterfly (NYC)
@Eric It's better if Bloomberg does the dirty work. Funnier too. I loved it when in reply to some blather of Trump's: you and I know the same people in NY and they all laugh at you. The carnival barking fool.
Eric (New York)
@Butterfly amen
Calvin (Raleigh)
Why is Biden doing well a problem for Trump? Isn't Biden probably the riskiest candidate that the Democrats could put forward? Wouldn't Biden doing well be considered great news for Trump? All Trump has to do is once a month say 'Biden' and 'Ukraine' in the same sentence and he wins the election.
John S. (Orange county, CA)
Trump's economy is rock solid. Unemployment is lowest in 60 plus years. Troops are coming home despite the grumbling of the neocon liberals. Illegal immigration is demonstrably down. New trade agreements have given Americans more to cheer for. His path to re-election is about as wide as the 401.
I have had it (observing)
What did Trump do to create more jobs in health care and service industry? It's just people working two jobs. He has seceded in putting business over the health of our land. Yea he is bringing troops home but we are losing allies to China.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
@John S. Not to mention the many millions of anti-status quo Progressives votes he just picked up.
Dave (LA)
Trump's Twitter feed is only of interest to the media. More people don't have Twitter accounts than do. (It is just a collection of the worst of the Internet - I don't waste my time.) Trump seems to think his feed has an effect on the Democratic voters. He's in the bubble. And as a former low-level media "star," he should know something about over-exposure.
Edward Moran (Washington, DC)
It's a very interesting example of what happens when someone who doesn't know how to do anything productive is faced with the need to act. Trump can't even assure the people of the USA that our chief executive will act against the pandemic. Instead he sets up VP Pence as the fall guy. Pence - a person who doesn't believe in evolution or climate change is leading our response to COVID-19.
Yankee Christian (California)
Democrats and Constitution loving Americans! UNITE OR DIE! However the endgame of the primaries play out we must fight shoulder to shoulder against the scourge of Trump. If Biden wins we must not alienate the young idealists that support Bernie and for good reason. They must be heard and given a place of honor. E Pluribus Unum!
Sue Ellen (NYC)
People want a normal and maybe boring president. America does not want a radical in the office or someone offering the impossible (even though it’s good). Also, Republicans who hate Trump may vote for Biden but not Bernie.
Fourteen14 (Boston)
@Sue Ellen Why is everything "impossible" to a Moderate? That's as unAmerican as possible.
Henry Rawlinson (uk)
This tiny virus and the fact that Mr Trump is not in any way prepared to deal with it may well be the cause of his downfall.
calleefornia (SF Bay Area)
I doubt that Trump is terribly worried about Biden. I think he might have been more worried about Bloomberg. The Coronavirus, yes.
james haynes (blue lake california)
Joe Biden and Hunter can simply dismiss the senate investigation of the latter as dirty politics and leave it at that. Hunter should ignore any subpoenas he receives on the same basis. Then see if the courts, which wouldn't enforce subpoenas on Republican witnesses during the impeachment, will chose to enforce them against Democrats.
Marcus Aurelius (Terra Incognita)
@james haynes Excuse me, but please point to the times the courts refused to enforce subpoenas. When did Schiff and his cohort ask the courts to do so?
james haynes (blue lake california)
@Marcus Aurelius Most recently, Feb. 20 in U.S District Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. re Don Meghan.
Carla (Brooklyn)
If people still supported trump, they would be totally mad to now. Here we are , facing a possible epidemic of a deadly disease with no one at the helm; no monitoring, no healthcare, no scientists since they were all fired, a de-funded CDC., no masks, no tests, etc. My god, could trump be any more horrible? This is a life and death situation and we have an evil twittering fool blaming Democrats or saying it's a hoax and putting Pence, the anti science guy in charge, in order to control information. And this makes us different from North Korea exactly how?
Doc (Atlanta)
Trump treats governing as a PR opportunity. His team, particularly Mike Pence, has little or no credibility with the public or press who are, with the exception of Fox News, viewed as mere puppets. Lies spawn more lies, something increasingly exposed by piousness and insincere prayers. American's demand competence and have lost patience with this sinking ship occupying the White House.
EGD (California)
Trump allegedly having a ‘bad’ week doesn’t mask the fact that Joe Biden is becoming increasingly confused.
RMB (Denver, CO)
@EGD Meanwhile, Trump can scarcely string an entire sentence together. And many of his fragments are inaccurate or misstated.
New World (NYC)
Health insurance stocks are up 10% today. What does that tell you.
atb (Chicago)
According to my financial planner, Trump is "most market friendly." HOW???
Wilson (San Francisco)
Too bad for Trump that Biden is about six feet tall. He can't pull out the short jokes for that one. It's so Trump to take pride in things that he was born with and didn't do anything for (wealth, height, etc.).
Zak (Lakewood, WA)
The trump slump last week, the Biden bounce this week. Time to unite Democrats and dump trump.
Kevin (Sun Diego)
These are by far my favorite articles to read. They are proof that journalism is more about manipulating the readers opinions than reporting the news.
Larry D (Brooklyn)
But you’re above all that, unlike the rest of us poor dupes. I feel suitably humbled.
REBCO (FORT LAUDERDALE FL)
Trump is desperate to get re-elected as the fate he faces as Citizen Trump is rather dire with possible criminal prosecutions and investigation taking a toll on his brand's fortunes. Don Jr will still be the snippy Russian contact shooting endangered species and trying to win his father's blessing which will now be unlikely. Trump has shown he is incompetent and a liar not qualified to be in the oval office and with an economy heading south his only appeal is fading fast. Only hope is back to TV with his blonde wig and clown makeup to sell his tired act.
Jeff M (NYC)
While Trump was busy misappropriating Defense Department funds to build a useless wall, a virus crept in from China and upended his ill-conceived plans. But what sank this presidency is not a virus. It's the normalization of racism, incompetence, and corruption.
Whole Grains (USA)
Not only was it a bad week for Trump, Attorney General William Barr must be in a quandary not knowing who to investigate until Democrats decide between Sanders and Biden.
Christine A Roux (Northwest)
Dear Mr. Trump, I am so sorry you did not get your way and dismiss Joe Biden through a number of tactics some might feel are unfair like investigating his son, signalling to hackers to prop up numbers against him, and diminishing the great president he worked for. I am sorry you are feeling a bit of a Corona Virus crunch. It must be a little stressful to see the markets galloping downhill. I guess I am also sorry you might not be reelected, I mean, for you, I am sorry. Sorry for your weird family and all those kinda strange people who don't see that you are really bad for this country. Sorry that you have not quit. It's ok to quit, you know. Sometimes it's better than getting fired. Just saying. Sincerely, AllHandsonDeck America
Kodali (VA)
No one will blame Trump for Corona virus. No one blames Trump for volatility in the market. He can say, despite Corona virus, the markets are holding study because of strong economy due to his economic policies. Never mind what they are. Biden coming back, yea, that is a serious problem. Trump knows it and because of that he got caught and impeached for Ukraine gate.
David Weintraub (Edison NJ)
@Kodali Everyone is blaming Trump for the virus, because it is obvious the US response has been so bungled.
Frank L. (Oregon)
@Kodali of course people blame Trump for everything. It is the only way they can feed their unfounded hate and get others to hate with them. Get facts and get informed. Reading opinionated misinformation like this only perpetuates ignorance.
Jim Brokaw (California)
@Kodali -- I don't "blame Trump for Corona virus". I blame Trump for dismantling the organization structure put in place by President Obama specifically to watch for and initiate a strong response to such threats. I blame Trump for completely fumbling the initial response of the United States to the Corona virus. And I blame Trump for his continuing inability to let experts speak out directly and clearly with facts on the situation with the Corona virus, while Trump continues to repeat factually untrue things and to minimize the reality of the danger. I blame Trump for, once again, being unable to 'do the job' of being president effectively. But not for the Corona virus response alone - Trump's incompetence has been demonstrated over and over... this is just the latest incidence.
Kraig (Seattle)
Trade and "trade deals" were major issues in the 2016 presidential election, especially in the Midwest, including where Trump won MI, WI, and PA. If Biden is the nominee, expect Trump to eviscerate him there with his support for NAFTA and other "trade deals" and blame the decline of manufacturing jobs on him. This time---even worse than 2016--Trump will highlight the NEW NAFTA, now called the USMCA, that was negotiated by the Trump administration. This past December, most Senate Democrats voted for this new deal because it made modest (very modest) improvements over the old one. Democrats handed Trump a "victory" he'll beat them over their heads with. The USMCA does't protect existing jobs nor the environment. It doesn't address climate change at all. One of the Senators who voted against NAFTA and the USMCA was Bernie Sanders. If Sanders is the nominee, he won't be on the defensive. He'll have the high ground on this key matter, one that will shape the votes of millions of voters in the Midwest, and be a key factor in the decision of countless people whether to vote at all. Let's not make 2020 a re-play of the 2016 election.
Larry D (Brooklyn)
Not having to defend himself about NAFTA would leave Bernie free time to defend himself about the honeymoon in Moscow, the embrace of the Sandinistas, the praise of Castro. Somehow I don’t think NAFTA pro or con is going to be an issue in this campaign.
Kraig (Seattle)
@Larry D It'll be an issue if Trump makes it an issue. He made "Hillary's emails" into one of the main ones. Trump knows how to play the media. That's his genius. The GOP talking points from now to Nov, every day, and in the news, will be Burisma and whatever else he picks---and it could be trade if that's what the GOP thinks will work.
Tortuga (Headwall, CO)
"training his Twitter feed on his potential rivals, and trying to deepen authentic divisions in the Democratic Party by stoking fears" the problem with that strategy is: Democrats don't read his twitter drivel much less believe what he has to write. He is only writing to his cult followers not those who vote in Democratic Party primaries.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@Tortuga Bingo!!!! Give this man (or woman) a cigar...) I have NEVER read any of the twitter vomit that this creature has spewed out.....(other than what's written in the press).. Don't blow it Dems.
George S (New York, NY)
@Tortuga And why, oh why, must numerous media outlets still act as if they’re compelled to report on every Trump Twitter screed as if it were momentous news?
George S (New York, NY)
@craig johnston You mean denying the non-Democrat the party nomination?? It’s about time.
John (Toronto)
Has Trump grown his base, even the slightest bit? I know a lot can happen before October, but it's really hard to see Trump's path to re-election right now. With the stock market riding a rollercoaster, and little believable reassurance from the White House on a serious health threat, it's a safe bet the undeclared voters who rolled the dice on Trump last time have a growing appetite for stability. Trump's minority base can't save him.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@John And I wonder too....how many older white Trump supporters, now 4 years down the road, have diminishing health and have woke up to the reality of ridiculous hospital bills and drug charges from the man who promised the "most beautiful health care to replace that Obamacare most terrible deal ever...." I know plenty of PEOPLE who are struggling with medical costs....whether they are GOP or DEM doesn't matter much when you can't pay your bill and there's no help.
Corrie (Alabama)
@John the base has shrunk. Look at Alabama’s primary data. It’s very telling.
Free to be Me (U.S.A.)
@Corrie, yes, as the base number shrinks, the percentage increases, giving an impression of an increasing percentage of republicans supporting trump. When, in all actuality, the number of republicans supporting trump has decreased. That is why a moderate Democrat candidate is desirable: to give the real Republicans someone to vote for.
Brian (Downingtown, PA)
All of us should be horrified by the Trump administration’s lack of preparedness for the Coronavirus outbreak. We should be thankful that people from the NIH and the CDC are able to do their jobs. What’s more, Congress is moving forward with adequate funding to address the pandemic. The financial markets are still dealing with considerable uncertainty. Trump has done nothing to settle the markets. He pressured the Fed to lower rates. The Fed’s ill-advised cut did nothing to calm the markets. Last, but not least, it looks like Trump will face Joe Biden. Trump probably preferred Sanders, Warren, or Bloomberg. Overall, not a good week for Trump.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@Brian Don't forget the growing fear he must have thinking about the next rally... screaming, overheated, spitting, coughing supporters...sweaty from being pressed together like sardines, many returning from filthy venue rest-rooms... Bleeeechhhh....When's his next rally?
Aspasia (CA)
@Brian Trump's BFF, Vladimir Putin, has already put the considerable expertise of his hackmeisters in support of Sanders. Why? Because Sanders will not be able to get rid of Trump.
Chris (Columbus, Ohio)
“I would describe him as Sideshow Bob in this process.” Classic! Best description I’ve read of Trump yet. Of course, he could only wish to have Kelsey Grammer’s voice.
Sarah (Niagara Falls, NY)
@Chris Yes! As soon as I read that sentence, I got the instant mental picture in my head of Trump stepping on overturned garden rakes and getting whacked in the face, a la Sideshow Bob. It’s even funnier in the context of his rant last year, regarding how California needs to be raking their forests to prevent wildfires. My stomach hurts from laughing so hard.
Bassman (U.S.A.)
@Chris Totally lacks Sideshow Bob's class and charm.
MEM (Los Angeles)
The alternate reality of Trumpism is not a quirk of Trump. It is an essential aspect of his movement. When external reality intrudes with natural or man-made disaster, an inadequate or ineffective response is not the failure of the government an certainly not the failure of the Leader. There is always a conspiracy against the Leader; there is always a scapegoat. There is always a rationalization that the failure is a necessary step towards future success, which depends upon maintaining faith in the Leader. Trump has no need or desire to control events; he only needs the continued loyalty of his followers, most of whom have been frightened into obedience. Only if and until Trump suffers a crushing electoral defeat will this personality cult subside. Even then, there will be mini-Trumps eager to take his place.
baldo (Massachusetts)
@MEM Even if Trump is soundly defeated in November, he isn't going to go quietly. He certainly isn't going to be like previous presidents who, out of respect for the office they occupied, stayed out of the limelight and let his successor do his job. No, Trump will keep injecting his toxic, divisive rhetoric until the day they close the lid.
pork chops (Boulder, CO.)
@baldo Yup. A regular guest on Fox if not his own self funded tv show. You're right. Let's hope the media ignores him.
jmilovich (Los Angeles County)
As it is Trump's natural wont to pivot and point, he'll no doubt fire-off a tired litany of how he was wronged and retreat to the usual baseless claims and spin. Victimhood suits him well and his supporters are happy with that.
H Pearle (Rochester, NY)
Don't count Trump out, yet. He feeds off news, good and bad. Biden, if he is the nominee, will have to sustain media attention. Otherwise, Trump may trump media, again and again and win. I suggest Democrats need a sustained focus to win the election. It could be a new democracy wave, with Biden in 2020. Perhaps, Democrats need a theme song for hope: "Democracy is coming to the USA" (Leonard Cohen, song, 1992)
Nelson (Schmitz)
Two things: If Joe wins the nomination, Sanders voters MUST vote in spite of their disappointment. Considering the alternative, it has already been proven that Trump won in 2016 in large part because of sour grapes by many millennials. Secondly, Trump will repeat ad-nauseam allegations about Joe’s son Hunter, just like his harping on emails 4 years ago. Fine, Donny boy, make Joe’s day, there is a list a mile-long list of allegations against You, including but not limited to having been impeached. That stain is indelible, and has to be driven home.
John Townsend (Mexico)
@Nelson re "Trump won in 2016 in large part because of sour grapes by many millennials." Over half of all eligible voters (some 100 million) didn't even bother to vote in 2016. And this is the consequence … a so-called president whose narcissism is legion, his solipsism unashamed, his hedonism uninhibited. Voter apathy is tragic and dangerous.
Casey S (New York)
A lot of us are leaving the party. Enjoy what’s coming to you.
Nelson (Schmitz)
@Casey S Can you clarify what you mean?
LHW (Boston)
Like a cornered dog, Trump will get more and more desperate as his lies about the coronavirus are ineffective, as the stock market remains volatile, and as moderate Democrats coalesce around Biden. We will have to remain alert and vigilant since Trump will stoop to any method, including cheating and seeking foreign interference, in his attempt to win another term. And of course as we just learned through the impeachment trial, it’s highly unlikely the Republicans in Congress will rein him in.
Chris Jones (Playa del Rey, CA)
Good points, but think you mean “cornered rat”. Dogs are fundamentally loyal and likable.
Meryl g (Nyc)
@LHW yes, but so insulting to dogs!
meriboo (NYC)
People seem to have forgotten about the impeachment (no doubt a symptom of Post Trump Stress Disorder). So let me be the remnder and suggest that the impeachment, though at the time it seemed it might render Biden too tarnished to run, impeachment seems to have given him a boost. As if he's already a foot soldier in the War Against Trump, and voters recognized that. Unlike everyone else in the race, Biden has reasons to hate Trump personally -- thanks to Hunter & Burisma. That kind of aggression may serve the Democrats very well in the general election. The Dems will need to fight as hard and if necessary as dirty as the GOP.
Kevin Sheasgreen (Bangor, ME)
It is bewildering to me that the NYTs continues to show CA as undecided and leaning Sanders as of 1:30 EST 3/4, when Senator Sanders has 33.6% of the vote to Biden's 25%. Just scratching numbers on the back of an envelope, for Biden to win even if Sanders were not to receive another vote in the uncounted results, Biden would have to receive ~75% of the remaining votes. This seems improbable in the extreme. The AP has already called the state for Sanders and I think the NYT would do well to do the same and leave their scarcely veiled support for the Biden campaign and antipathy to the Sanders campaign to the editorial page.
John Harper (Carlsbad, CA)
@Kevin Sheasgreen Wow, talk about a "butt hurt" comment. You sound like a Trump voter that thinks the world is against them. "Get over it" - Mick Mulvaney.
arty (MA)
@Kevin Sheasgreen Kevin, in California, where there was a good deal of early voting, and where Bloomberg spent enormous amounts of money, Biden plus the candidates who have withdrawn and now endorse him have about 51% of the votes. So, if the voting had been delayed about a week, Biden would certainly have *substantially* outperformed Sanders. If you recognize that Warren supporters would most likely split about even if she withdraws, what we have learned is that Sanders is very much in the minority going forward. And there has been a decline, not an increase, in voting by Sander's base of young people. So his "turnout" claims have been debunked completely. You need to do the math instead of conspiracy-theorizing.
charles almon (brooklyn NYC)
I can hardly wait for Giuliani's Biden "documentary" currently be "filmed" in the Ukraine. Methinks it will meet the same fate as all the "explosive" dirt he found there, which he promised to reveal on one missed date after another.
ALN (USA)
The twitter tirades have become old and boring and nobody pays attention to it anymore. Trump has been successful in one thing, he has united the Democratic party.
Nostradamus Said So (Midwest)
This is a man who refuses to accept that the novel coronavirus is a threat to Americans. He tells his base that his rallies are safe from the contagion. Really? Get 5000 people together in the wrong place & off the virus goes to infect thousands more. If he does not do more to fund the Health Organizations, the out breaks in America will become just one more country in the pandemic. He may have a bad November if he doesn't straighten up & start telling truth about the health situation (wait, can he do that?).

I loved Bloomberg's billboards in Nevada that were put up specifically to taunt Trump before his event there on February 22nd. Keep it up, Bloomberg! "Donald Trump cheats at golf" "Donald Trump lost the popular vote" "Donald Trump went broke running a casino" "Donald Trump has declared bankruptcy 6 times" "Donald Trump's wall fell over" "Donald Trump eats burnt steak"
bes (VA)
@Cousy Thanks, Mike Bloomberg. These are laugh-out-loud funny.
PK2NYT (Sacramento)
@Cousy These are straight forward facts, I do not know what Biden can not throw them in Trump and his supporters' face every opportunity he gets. In the last three years there is enough embarrassing and stupid Trump TV clips and Tweets to last a life time. Biden has to use them. Also in invite Stormy Daniels the adult movie star to sit front and center in the debates. This is time to go on a fierce attack on a bully and not time to pull back any punches. I like Biden but I do not know if he is up to it.
Greg (Colorado)
@Cousy That is FANTASTIC!
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
Get ready for Trump and his Dark Arts Republican campaign strategists to tear the nation and Joe Biden apart as they try to prop up their trickle-down fraudonomics, 0.1% Welfare Queen state and their Federal Reserve-Wall St. coronavirus vaccine. The Trump Administration has no clothes. They abandoned America to paint the toenails of the rich in a fresh coat of gold. Trump and the GOP deserve EJECTION on November 3 2020. Let's give Trump the Blue Tsunami he deserves.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
@Socrates Thanks for joining the Joe-mentum. I’ll forgive the past. Seriously.
nanfahr (Tucson)
@Socrates And Socrates, keep your posts coming!
Troy in Colorado (Denver)
@Socrates Yes!! Restore sanity. Vote blue!!
Scottapottomus (Right Here On The Left)
It would be great if Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren withdrew and immediately and strongly supported Biden. A show of Democratic force and unity would go a long way toward getting rid of Trump come November. As the article mentions, folks are tired of Trump’s buffoonery. Let’s give the American public a reason to rally around Biden. Cmon Senators Sanders and Warren: do what’s best for America.
Jaleh (Aspen)
@Scottapottomus I can see Warren do that but Sanders? He and trump are very much alike, they are both sefish (albeit in different ways), and nuts.
JR (Madison, Wi)
@Scottapottomus UNO Reverse and we got a deal
Sydney Carton (LI NY)
@B Colorado Bernie will never turn over his data base. He is a stubborn old Bolshevik; idealistic to the very end. His cult will follow him down the rabbit hole of selfishness.

Good.
Hey Now (Maine)
The GOP made it clear they don't care about Trump's numerous misdeeds, lies, nepotism, bullying, racism, cronyism, etc. And they really expect the voters to care if Trump goes after Biden's family? Really, that's their big plan?
Jillian (USA)
@Hey Now I've always wondered about this tactic. We all know the Republicans are going to go after Hunter Biden relentlessly (looking at you Sens. Johnson and Graham), but is the average voter really going to care about Hunter Biden benefitting from nepotism when Ivanka and Jared, who are completely and totally unqualified for their positions, are benefiting greatly from Trump's position as President? And, even if we assume that Joe Biden is corrupt as a result, is that really going to matter compared with all of the corruption in the current administration? The whole thing is so hypocritical it's hard to watch.
Nate (USA)
@Jillian Exactly- Democratic Party nepotism and corruption isn't as bad as Republican nepotism and corruption. That's a winning strategy right there. I can't wait to vote for my brand of nepotism and corruption. The other party's version of nepotism and corruption is unacceptable. Our nepotism and corruption is much more better. Yes sirree, Bob.
Jillian (USA)
@Nate that's not what I meant at all, and I think you know that. My point is that the Republicans' strategy of dirtying up Biden by using his son is completely and totally hypocritical and, in a normal time, it should backfire. Obviously, voters don't want to vote for anyone who is corrupt.
ManhattanWilliam (New York City)
The gangster-president is having a bad week? I’ll drink to that!!
Lois Lettini (Arlington, TX)
YES! It does call for a glass of good wine! OR whatever!
Corrie (Alabama)
@ManhattanWilliam ah this made me laugh! Wine sounds great! Cheers :)
Mua (Transoceanic)
@ManhattanWilliam I'll wait until the trump crime family have all either fled to Saudi Arabia or are locked up never to see the light of day. That will be cause to celebrate. Until then, the nation is not safe from these despotic thieves and their nepotist sycophants in Congress.
SadBillionaire (Cascadia)
Here comes fate Mr. President, like a juggernaut, and like usual you are woefully unprepared for it.
Chris V (Michigan)
@SadBillionaire Biden is anything but a juggernaut. If he performs well against Trump in the debates I will be happily surprised. But I am still not counting on it.
Patrick Duffey (Tampa)
Interesting. Insightful. Well-written. But this is an opinion piece, not news.
Lisa (Oakland)
@Patrick Duffey And your point is...?
ss (los gatos)
@Patrick Duffey No problem. It is clearly labelled News Analysis, which signals that it contains a lot of interpretive writing as well as quotation of sources.
Jeanne Duncan (Portland, OR)
@Patrick Duffey It's labeled "News Analysis." As an analysis of the week's news and its effect on Trump, that seems fair.
Guy K (Pennsylvania)
So that's the take on this presidency now? Trump is diabolical, and he's just messing with us? Cut through the distractions and get to the job he's not doing: How does "A+++" get any the business of the country done when everyone in his orbit appears to be working on the "scorched-earth" strategy everyday?
Honey (Texas)
If Mr. Biden's family is Trump fodder, then all Trumps are vulnerable to the same scrutiny. Trump has provided Democrats with all the ammunition they need to cripple his candidacy. If Biden can unite Democrats with an appropriate vice presidential nominee, the race should be won.
ss (los gatos)
@Honey I, for one, would prefer to keep the families off limits. But the inhabitant of this White House of glass cannot resist throwing stones.
sailorken (canada(westcoast))
@Honey Mayor Pete For VP! That would make trumpy's head explode. I still think that even if trump lost in a landslide against him, he would not leave the White House,"fake news" he will cry,"the vote was rigged by the media",the Chinese government etc. Remember his statement, "I have the police, the military and the bikers on my side".
Cheryl (Florida)
@Honey Yes let's hope they will play the orange pus bags game and go after his do nothing, qualified for nothing, daughter and son-in-law and then take on his despicable, moronic sons. VOTE BLUE!!!
Steve Schroeder (Leland NC)
Do you suppose the King of Corruption has any idea how foolish he sounds when he rails against "corruption" of someone who opposes him? He should forgo this "smokescreen" approach; all he's doing is setting his own pants on fire.
Roberta (Virginia)
Someone should remind Mr. Trump’s handlers that a scorched earth campaign can work two ways. And with Mr. Bloomberg’s money behind Mr. Biden, and all the lies and catastrophes connected to trump, that can be pretty scorching.
Dave (LA)
@Roberta Bloomberg and others should just run all of Trump's worse quotes and actions over the past decade. Start with the Central Park Five. Or go back to Fred's racism in his apartment complexes with little Donnie at his knee. Move on to his Birtherism. Then the claim that Mexico will pay for the wall. Continue with his efforts to repeal ACA and cut Medicare and SS benefits. There is so much there. Just use clips of him running his mouth. Just to remind the swing voters of their choice.
Les (SW Florida)
@Roberta Donny needs to stock up on asbestos underwear.
Albert D'Alligator (Lake Alice)
@Dave; You forgot tax evasion, bone spurs, etc.
george eliot (annapolis, md)

Laura (CT)
I hope the coronavirus gets under control sooner than later. I also hope trump has many more bad weeks to come — right up to Election Day.
Nancy fleming (Shaker Heights ohio)
I can’t imagine Trump having any influence except The usual extreme nausea among voters for President. Biden is fine, and it’s not his son running for President so what Trump is trying to stir up is only his endless accusations Against anyone he fears ,someone who uses their mind to think.
Alan Wallach (Washington, DC)
The big question is, if Biden is nominated, can he beat Trump. He may be somewhat more appealing to voters than Hillary, but like Hillary, he speaks for the Democratic Party establishment, which is notable for its lack of new ideas, especially when it comes to addressing the economic conditions that made a Trump presidency possible.
totyson (Sheboygan, WI)
@Alan Wallach I think, for either Democratic Party nominee to prevail in November, there will need to be some embracing of the ideas and constituency of the other. The notion that one single ideology or policy position can dislodge the GOP from its attempted hegemony is wishful thinking at best, and reckless folly at worst.
ss (los gatos)
@Alan Wallach Let's make that a call to action, not an attack.
Dave (Michigan)
@Alan Wallach Apparently the majority of Democrats who didn't vote for Sanders also speak for the establishment, or perhaps are the establishment. Biden will win if the Berniecrats turn out. Sanders cannot win the nomination, but he can lose the election.
Alan (Sarasota)
If Biden get the nomination despite Bernie being your desired candidate please do not sit home. Sitting home or voting 3rd party is a vote for Trump.
H Pearle (Rochester, NY)
@Alan ews, good and bad. Biden, if he is the nominee, will have to sustain media attention. Otherwise, Trump may trump media, again and again and win. I suggest Democrats need a sustained focus to win the election. It could be a new democracy wave, with Biden in 2020. Perhaps, Democrats need a theme song for hope: "Democracy is coming to the USA" (Leonard Cohen, song)
eddie (nyc)
@Josh Don't understand this kind of thinking at all. Not a Biden fan here, but I'd take any of those Democratic candidates over trump. He's a disaster for this country? Isn't that clear to you?
Paco47 (NYC)
@Josh I don't understand the logic behind your argument. Bernie wants Trump out no matter who is the dem nominee. You apparently are a very strong supporter of Bernie. Yet won't vote for another dem nominee thus making four more years of hideous Trump more likely. I hope you realize that your position is why people trust the Bernie bros as much as the MAGA screamers.
Bikerman (United States)
Watch for Trump's sycophants, the GOP congress, and other loyalists to pick up the activities and efforts in smearing Biden that got Trump justifiably impeached.
WeThePeople (Where Truth Still Counts)
@Bikerman It's already started: Senator Ron Johnson - whom I am embarrassed to call one of my WI elected officials - is now exploring subpoenaing Hunter Biden so the GOP can send voters down the rabbit hole of the already-disproven Burisma influence theory. I'm trying to decide at this point whether Senator Johnson's performance through the impeachment process now ranks him ahead of - or behind - Senator Joe McCarthy, Wisconsin's infamous elected official who also dealt in untruths and ruining people's lives through innuendo.
Corrie (Alabama)
@Bikerman can’t wait for Lindsey Graham to join in the attacks. His old pal John McCain would be so proud. Not.
Blackcat66 (NJ)
@WeThePeople. The Republicans have shown that subpoenas can be ignored.
Cousy (New England)
I am more and more optimistic that Trump will be defeated in December. Of the swing states, only Wisconsin seems to be shaky. Pennsylvania, Michigan and heck even North Carolina are looking good.
Bob (Montréal)
And don’t forget Arizona (who elected a blue senator in 2018) and Florida (where ex-felons will be able to vote)
Les (SW Florida)
@Bob Yes, and our now able to vote ex-felons will vote Blue.
Tyrus (Chelsea)
@Cousy November NOT December. The 2020 United States presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Tell your friends.
doug mclaren (seattle)
The trump show has jumped the shark so many times it’s hard to imagine how they will inspire enthusiasm among the moderates and independents they need to overcome Biden’s likeability factor.
somebody (somewhere)
It wasn't all that bad for Trump. He has HIMSS turning their 40K annual conference into a glorified Trump Rally for him next week. Not a bad political accomplishment.
BSR (Bronx)
Since the president loves to be in control, he better learn the serenity prayer. The majority of this country will vote him out in November.
MEM (Los Angeles)
@BSR The majority voted against him in November 2016; a lot of good that did!
Broz (In Florida)
@BSR To learn the Serenity Prayer is easy. To accept the Serenity Prayer means, to me, giving up control. To live the Serenity Prayer is being teachable and surrendering. I can only control myself.
