Prisons should be used to protect the public from becoming victims of dangerous actors. Haddon, a sexual predator, is exactly the type of person who needs to be removed from the general public. Perhaps he could be rehabilitated during his incarceration, but where in his cushy, privileged plea deal, was he required to address his sickness that makes him a threat to women? This double standard - where the rules only apply to the masses, but not the elite - is destroying our country.
IWonder (Manhattan)
Shame on you Vance. Why do you continue giving passes to rich white men, leaving them free to prey upon countless women, many who will never come forward. Haddon will probably relocate to another country and continue his sadistic behavior. The lesser charges undoubtedly setting him free to roam, to work, thanks to Cyrus Vance.

You New Yorkers pick the worst public officials. I’m sure Mr. Vance will easily be re-elected
Ian MacFarlane (Philadelphia)
It is more than a coincidence that the old boys club has more than a few members from all the right familes, in all the right clubs, at all the right schools who end up with all the right jobs? Couldn't be a better time to nominate and elect a woman as our President, 'cause it just isn't gonna change if we don't.
Plank (Philadelphia)
What is this obsession with trying to force resignations? A person can change their work. It's ridiculous.

"More than 65 women have now accused Mr. Hadden of sexually abusing them". I wonder how many more it will take to overcome white male privilege?
Eugene (NYC)
The fact is, Cy Vance is crooked. That is why he has failed to prosecute Polly Trottenberg for her very deliberate, calculated multiple violations of the state Vehicle and Traffic and Education Laws. That is why he has failed to prosecute the various schools chancellors for recklessly endangering our city's children by violating fire safety regulations. Cy Vance is in over his head. Let him drown.
Robert (New York)
This doctor life is already ruined. Loss of Medical license, status as a felon, sexual offender. To extract further punishment, is politically motivated, and is vindictive and unnecessarily vengeful.
Shellay Maughan (Seattle)
@Robert He ruined his own life through his own choices, and damaged others lives in the process. All that happened is that he was discovered and is not in a position to do it again. It is completely baffling that you would consider that to be enough. Do you think all criminals should escape prison, or is it only criminals who hold doctorates?
Ceteris Paribus (Nomatterwhere)
@Robert Your point is well-taken. However, have you considered the victims point-of-view? Do you think that they feel that justice has been served?
Robert (New York)
Victims of any crime never think justice has been served. Ask the victims of the OJ case
Martha Shelley (Portland, OR)
Vance's office also sought to reduce the sex offender status of Jeffrey Epstein. His office has a history of going light on rich white men.
Kathy (SF)
"Mr. Vance’s office then ignored a state panel’s recommendation and sought the lowest sex offender status for Mr. Hadden, which a judge granted." What pathetic excuses for human beings they all are. May they reap what they have sown.
savks (Atlanta)
this guy needs hard time. need to send a message.

Can't we find a better word for a person who has endured abuse? Both "victim" and "survivor" are technically accurate, but not ideal.
Brewster’s Millions (Santa Fe)
Cyrus Vance should resign for a lot of reasons.
IN (NYC)
With the growing number of wmen as victims of ob/gyns, has anyone looked at the health and development of children born to these victims loving lives of tremendos stress ?
bluewhinge (Snook, Tx)
Prosecutors need to quit dropping the ball on these sexual abuse cases and get after the sickos who use their positions of trust to violate women, lest women begin taking justice into their own hands.
JaneK (Glen Ridge, NJ)
Vance sure knew how to look the other way when Jeffrey Epstein was in town.
Larry (NYS)
Let’s not forget Vance also tried to have Jeffrey Epstein’s sex offender status downgraded in NY.
A Woman (USA)
Why are officials calling girls and women "survivors"? The correct term is victim. These girls and women did survive cancer - they were sexually assaulted.
DTB (Bronx, NY)
@A Woman I hear what you are saying, but often persons who are the victims of sexual assault prefer the term survivor. To say they are survivors is to elevate them beyond what has happened, instead of victim which can feel as though you are still subject to the perpetrator's actions. There's no right answer, and people may prefer one term for themselves, but to call them survivors is not meant to be demeaning. https://www.rainn.org/articles/key-terms-and-phrases
Incorporeal Being (here)
@A Woman When you have survived sexual assault, it feels a lot better to think of yourself as (and have others call you) a "survivor" rather than "victim". OK?
A Woman (USA)
Dear @DTB and @Incorporeal - Not all women identified as survivors because some don't "survive". A trauma of sexual assault can lead to a life time of pain, especially since most woman can not afford necessary medical and therapeutic care. I take your point that some women self-identify as survivors. My point was intended to presenting facts, and push our society to accept that girls and women sexually assaulted are victims - and full weight of prosecution - JAIL - must be applied.

“They didn’t do it right the first time and now they’re trying to come back and investigate him and do what they should have done the first time,” she said. “It’s insulting.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`` And only when Vance is facing publicity over his legal decisions... then his story changes. Too bad doing the right thing only happens when people are looking at what he's doing.
Linda Chuss (Massachusetts)
Yes, from Weinstein to Epstein to this, Vance’s office has a very bad smell. While SDNY is fighting the good fight against Trump, that’s no reason to give a pass to these wealthy donor felons.
theresa (new york)
Cy Vance has got to go! He's been protecting the rich and famous in NY for too long while taking questionable laundered donations to his campaigns. Despicable.
Perfect Gentleman (New York)
The women were pregnant so they could not see what was happening? Is the chief assistant serious? A woman who's groped on the subway can't see that either but she knows what's happening. This sounds more like a defense attorney on "Law & Order: SVU" than reality.
Melissa (Boston)
Cyrus Vance also opted not to charge Weinstein. What's going on here?
christina kish (hoboken)
So being pregnant they had no way of knowing what was going on. Really do we need video to prove abuse now?! Add to this the recent article about the pelvic exams on non consenting unconscious patients. Shows the boys just don’t see sexual assault as a real crime.
john w. (NY)
The common link to all the non prosecutions, lenient sentences, and back room deals is DA Vance. Vance's actions must be investigated.
Francie (Fairfax, CA)
I'm not a lawyer, so perhaps someone can explain this to me. The case was not a "slam dunk" so we shouldn't even bother bringing it to trial? This reminds me of the arguments made against bringing to trial any of the masterminds of the shenanigans that led to the 2008 financial crisis. They seemed to say that it would just be too hard to win, so they didn't bother.
A W (Seattle)
And why wasn’t it a slam dunk? “Among other things, she said, some of the women were pregnant when they say the assaults occurred and so they could not see what was happening.” How sick is it that a woman has to watch her own rape in order to go to court?
Jack Frost (New York)
A well known OBGYN in Central PA had a reputation as womanizer and flirt. He married a beautiful woman, had 3 gorgeous children, and his father was a beloved physician in a small nearby community adding to his stature as upholder of the family tradition in pursuing medicine. But, he was flawed. He routinely hit on women during exams and he was known for seducing, and marrying at least two of his nurses (following divorce of the previous one of course). It didn't hurt that he was tall, handsome and rich too. When my wife was pregnant with our first child she came home from her first exam and after a while began to confide in me the remarks of the good doctor during the exams. Today we would view those remarks as greatly inappropriate sexual come-ons that had no place in the exam room. I'm certain that he seduced or coerced more than one young woman into a sexual liaison. Was it criminal? I think so. He took advantage of young women, many teenagers, or college girls with little or no experience and with many troubled young wives going through their first pregnancy (or their last) to satisfy his lust for sexual gratification. No one filed charges but the tales of the doctor's exams were legendary and disgusting. OBGYN's have opportunity that few physicians have for sexual misconduct. Some take advantage of their positions and exploit women. It may not have been criminal but it was morally reprehensible. We need to rethink our laws. Inappropriate should be punishable.
Incorporeal Being (here)
@Jack Frost Why ever go to a male OB/GYN? Never!
Diana (New York)
Mr. Vance is working long past his expiration date. In addition to not prosecuting Weinstein, Vance did not charge TrumpKids for Trump SoHo deceptions after getting a campaign contribution from their lawyer. This sort of corruption needs to be voted out everywhere. Vance is up for reelection in 2021.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Same old, tired story. Wealthy white male, given a relative slap on his Money. A poor minority man would be locked-up, for many Years. As for the Women, they just need to get over it. Right ? Vance needs to Resign. NOW.
