In the Age of Digital Streaming, Are Movie Theaters Still Relevant?

Maybe a new "model" could include home-streaming of first releases, with a few theater venues offering large-screen, catered, on-demand viewings of any films past or recent. Not sure of the economics of that..

As a movie enthusiast, which I can proudly and pretentiously call myself, I will say I think that movie theaters are still relevant. When I’m streaming a movie at home, there are thousands of distractions coming at me from every direction, but the worst of those are coming from my own head. There is always the worry of wasting my own time, and I find myself stressing about everything else I could be doing and the more productive ways I could be spending my time. When I’m seated in a movie theater however, and the tickets have been paid for, and the snacks purchased or smuggled, there’s nothing else I could be doing and therefore no guilt in my movie watching experience. Going to a movie theater forces me to set an appointment for when I will be slacking off, which lets me enjoy and pay attention to the movie more as a result. As convenient as streaming is, I believe some movies were made and meant to be seen in the theater. This year’s ten-time Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of these movies. As the title suggests, this film moves quickly, and if you blink in some sections you miss details that were carefully thought through and poured over; post watching this masterpiece, that feels like a heinous thing to do. Watching a movie in a theater means I have an excuse to ignore my buzzing phone and stay in my cinematic wonderland for another hour, and a ten dollar movie ticket is worth that to me.

I watch movies or series on KUMFI MOVIES almost every day. It is quite convenient as I don’t have to leave home in order to see a movie, and there are many options available to choose from. But if one pauses to reflect upon it, it is not exciting at all. I believe that there is nothing like going to the theater with someone and escape from reality for a while. It is priceless to be surrounded by people who enjoy watching movies as much as you do and to have some snacks while watching the film. In addition, the giant screen and the high quality sound system makes it an unforgettable and unique experience.

In my opinion, I believe that although streaming platforms make theaters less relevant, there is no other experience like going to the movies with friends, family, or even alone. In the article it states that some people prefer their homes over theatres, strictly because of the convenience, I assume, but I would have to disagree that watching movies at home are more enjoyable than in a theater. Taken into consideration that in a theatre the movie is of the highest quality in resolution and additionally has a very clear sound system, the cinema creates an atmosphere that is more submerssive than sitting at home. There is a sense of unity with a crowd of people who all gather for the sole purposae of entertainment.

Personally, I believe that going to the movies is more about the experience, rather than the movie itself. With more options for streaming shows and movies at our fingertips, theatres have become less important. Nowadays, when a new tv show or movie comes out we are eager to watch and immediately resort to our phones and other devices. In fact, now streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu have their own programs that are not available elsewhere. This obviously erases the need and importance of movie theatres. Still, I have no doubt that they will remain an iconic first date spot, escape from reality for a quick couple hours, and a fun night with friends or family.

Shannon Doyne who wrote “In The Age of Digital Streaming, Are Movie Theaters Still Relevant” makes it clear that she finds the nostalgic feel of movie theaters to be a good experience when going to see movies. I think that is completely true. Movie theaters are a fun way to get out of the house and see something new, once you’ve seen it all you want in the theaters weather that is once or ten times, you can use different streaming services to watch the movie that you fell in love with in the theatre in the comfort of your own home. Theaters also bring the excitement of seeing a movie on a huge screen and sometimes in 3D and that isn’t something you can do with streaming services. It’s a whole different experience no matter how hard you try to recreate the theatre feel at home, it will never be the same.
Lauren Hale (Cass High School)
In, In the Age of Digital Streaming, Are Movie Theaters Still Relevant? Doyne explains the history of movie theaters throughout history. She then brings up a special theater in LA and talks about the significance and history. After that she asks us with all the streaming opportunities we have, if we still go out to a movie theater and watch movies. In my town yes, we do go to the movie theater. I live in a small town where there is not much to do. You can go shopping at one store and that’s about it. Most of the times my friends and I go see movies for fun. We go to a theater and get to hang out outside of school. This makes theaters special to me because it is the one time that my friends and I go do something exciting outside of school.

Movie theaters are still relevant because they give you an experience that digital streaming can’t give you. Sure, you can’t have a conversation or point things out with your friends while in a theater because it would just be rude speaking while a movie is going on, but you guys can always talk about the movie after it's over. One of the best experiences I have had in a theater is when I went to go see Avengers: Endgame. During the movie, all of us were feeling the same emotions, and there was a time when people started clapping during an important moment in the movie. You can't get this experience when digital streaming a movie. Also, movie theaters are still relevant because when movies first release, they are shown in theaters first. If you want to see a movie when it first comes out, you must go to a theater. I like going to the theater because I love theater popcorn and I enjoy being in a theater with other people and being away from home for a couple of hours. I don’t want to see every movie in the theater because movie tickets can get expensive. I enjoy watching movies that most people have found good or potential award-winning movies, and I choose to watch other movies that don’t fit this criteria on digital streaming websites. I know that digital streaming sites have started producing their own award-winning/award-nominee movies like Amazon’s Manchester by the Sea and Netflix’s The Irishman, but it still can’t beat the movie theater experience for me.

I had an experience recently going to se A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood recently in a movie theater. There is a scene in which Mr. Rodgers says, "Take a minute to think about all the people that have loved you into being." For a full 60 seconds, the characters sit in silence. There is no music, no distraction, just the two of them. I remember sitting in the theater and realizing that the movie was going to make each of us just sit there for that minute. As I sat, I could hear the breathing of my fellow audience members. There was this moment that transcended the movie in which each of us who happened to be there together that day were connected. It is moments like that which give power to theaters. If only for moments like that, theaters will always have a place in our culture.

I love watching movies at home but I also love going to the movie theater to watch movies. Now I don't have a lot of patience so when I am at home watching a movie and I'm 30 minutes in and it hasn't caught my attention yet, I hate to say it but I will usually just give up and watch tick tocks or something. Usually, the movies in the theaters are great and every time I've gone to see a movie I've loved each one. I love going to the theater any chance I get because watching a movie on the big screen with reclining chairs and a blanket is very nice, don't forget the popcorn, slushies, and candy. When I'm at home watching a movie I will randomly whip out my phone for no reason but at the theater, I can't, so I am more engaged in the movie, therefore, I don't get bored.
Gabriel Powers (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I generally use streaming services to watch shows and movies, but I also value going to the movie theater. If I’m interested in a new movie, I’d most likely want to go see it with friends, but if I just want to spend some time alone with something to watch or listen to, I often stream movies from my own devices. I think the availability of both of these options is nice for viewers, and I enjoy both, but ultimately, I think that watching a movie in a theater is much more immersive and brings you closer to the movie. While so simple, the movies can be changed just depending on where you’re watching them, to me they’re more fun in this different environment, with a big screen in a dark room and overpriced snacks that you finish before the movie actually starts. It’s a nice change for people like me who most often use streaming services, and I can see why that as well as a sense of nostalgia brings people to places like the New Beverly Cinema. Theaters here are modern, different from those described by the article in how they’re set up, and I’m sure I’d enjoy a visit. Watching movies at a theater feels nicer and more important than just streaming it, but streaming gives more freedom and lets you watch by yourself when you want. Watching with friends and discussing with one another about parts of the movie is fun, and I prefer having people there that I know, but I think it is still enjoyable to go see a movie by yourself too.
Emily Suit (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Personally I would always pick going to the theater to watch a movie at home. For me it's all about the experience, you get a whole different experience sitting in a movie theater then you do laying on a couch or in bed at home. When you are at a movie theater you are sitting with at least 50 other strangers, and it gives you perspective because with this group of strangers you laugh, scream, and cry together. And even though you all went to the same thater to see the same movie at the same time maybe you even sat next to each other, you all leave with a different experience. Sure you can choose to stay home and watch a movie on your phone but in the end it wouldn't even compare to the exhilarating experience of the movie theater.
Gabriel Powers (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I can totally agree with you, I think that the environment of the theater is nice when watching a movie, over the one at home on a much smaller screen or device. It is much more immersive being with the people around you and collectively sharing emotions as different events occur in the movie. Though I do not feel that the strangers in the audience with you are as important, I definitely enjoy going with friends or family and getting to talk about the movie together and share my thoughts on different aspects of it. The movie theater is an amazing place for us to experience a different world and overall have more fun than we could at home.
Ashton Gray (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
“A Two Way Street” Is digital streaming ruining movie theaters? Well it all depends on you. I personally love to go to movie theaters to either get away from the stress of homework, studying, and even the chores I have to do back at home. I use it as a way to get lunch with friends and then watch a movie we have wanted to see or just go there and be stupid. My first couple of dates were even at a movie theater where we didnt have to deal with the possibility of someone third wheeling. But, I also know people who would rather sit at home in the comfort of their bed and turn on netflix and watch any movie or show they wanted with the push of a few buttons. So is digital streaming ruining movie theaters. No not really because people still use the theaters as a place to hang out with family or friends and nothing will ever beat the feeling of watching a popular movie before they do and threatening them that you'll spoil the movie if they do something to annoy you.
Jacob Jarrett (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Why would digital streaming be killing movie theaters? Movie theaters are not the social hubs they once were, but they’re not being made irrelevant by streaming culture. There are countless laws and practices in place that effectively force movie theaters to stay relevant. For example: Let’s say, hypothetically, I wanted to watch Sonic the Hedgehog the day it came out. I could either watch it in theaters, pay $10, hang out with my friends, sit in comfortable chairs, watch the movie in the highest resolution and on the biggest screen possible with high quality speakers… or I could not do that. I could pirate the movie online, break the law, and acquire a host of viruses on the device of my choosing. The decision I make here isn't one everybody would choose(lots of people enjoy crime), but there is an extremely large number of people who, like me, have spent countless birthdays, family outings, or weekends watching movies in theaters. I know that the article was really about art-house theaters, specifically one in San Francisco, but I still don’t understand it. A half-minute google search just revealed to me that movie ticket sales today still rival those of the late 90s and early 2000s. I mean, sure, the culture of the people attending theaters is very different now. No one in their right mind buys theater snacks anymore, and people spend way less time socializing in the vicinity of the theater thanks to online purchasing, but movie theaters aren’t “irrelevant” now.
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
@Jacob Jarrett I would still argue that they are irrelevant. The only reason they are still releveant is like you said because they have a monopoly on new movies. Most people would rather stay at home and invite their friends over to watch the new movie where they can eat whatever food they want, pause it when they want, and spend less money on it. People go to theaters not because they choose too, but because they are compelled to by the movie industry.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Headline: Are Cinemas Dying? Going to the movies seems to be more about the experience rather than the movie itself. You get to go with tons of friends and go out to eat before or afterwards. I can’t say much because I rarely go to the movies but it is like a whole new world, especially the iMax movies, those are crazy. My parents would tell us about going to the movies, were they even watching a movie though?
Bella Steiner (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I honestly think going to the movies is more about the experience than actually seeing the movie, most of the time. It’s who you go with, who you meet, and the jokes and conversations had while watching the movie. You can’t have all of that by digitally streaming a movie. Also, more than not, you go to the movies with someone or a group of people, you never really go alone. When you stream movies at home, it’s normal to just sit there by yourself and watch a whole movie. Now don't get me wrong, I love to stream movies and shows at home, but going to the movies is an experience. Who doesn't love indulging in a medium coca-cola slushy with your buttered popcorn and candy? So many first dates, hangouts, a night away from the kids; the movies is a place where people go to escape from their realities for 2 hours of their day. They get to see someone save the world, or watch someone grow into a new person. Then once the movie is over, you get to discuss how you interpreted that one death scene, or why he didn't kiss the girl. The conversations after the movie are almost as good as the movie itself.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Bella Steiner I agree with you, it does seem to be more about the experience than anything.
Karolina (San Fernando Valley, California)
@Bella Steiner I agree with you although I myself have went to the movie theater countless of times I have yet to enjoy the movie equally to the experience. Watching a movie with someone that you enjoy the company of is so much better than watching a movie alone and that's because going to the movies has more to the atmosphere than the actual movie or at least that's how I feel.
Reid Barden (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
Personally I don't watch very many movies, I’d say I watch about ten a year. I'm just not really into the big movie franchises like star wars and marvel movies. I think it is definitely much easier to stream a movie from your house. You don't have to drive anywhere, don't have to pay for food, and don't have to pay for a ticket, you usually just pay a monthly fee for the streaming service and you can enjoy whatever food you like in the comfort of your home. However I do think that movie theaters are still relevant. I think if you are a big fan of star wars or marvel or franchises like that then it would be fun to go see the latest star wars movie in theaters. Movie theaters may not be the easier or cheaper option but I think you usually get a better experience. The screen is much bigger and there are cool sound effects like surround sound which makes it feel like sound is coming from all directions of the theater. I think movie theaters offer a better experience, there's something about waiting in line to get your popcorn and getting into the theater to pick out a seat and waiting for the movie to start. Overall I'd say if you're just trying to get some quick entertainment or just want to relax then streaming a movie at your house is the way to go. If you are big into movies and want the full experience then the theater is going to be best for you.
Danny Pasinski (Glenbard West Highschool)
As a 16 year old growing up in an era of Netflix, I find myself committing countless hours to a show about people just like myself. Sometimes, I even watch movies about the high school experience, despite being in it myself. That being said, I would never go to the movies, especially with other high school students, to see something as such. However, this is one of the few categories of movies I enjoy, along with horror films, action filled fighting movies, or even just comedies. The movie theater plays a huge role (no pun intended) in traditions, at least it does for my life. My family is not allowed to go see a Marvel movie without all five of us going together. My friends and I have seen a movie at midnight once a month for two years and running. While it may seem dumb, wasting money to go see a movie that you could just wait for, it isn’t entirely about the show itself. The drive to the theater, listening to music with your friends or family, the smells of the food, the funny reaction of the crazy women in the back, those are the things you will remember and talk about forever, not the fourth movie in a thirteen movie series.
Reid Barden (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@Danny Pasinski Why do you think that you would never see a film about the high school experience with other high school friends? I don't watch any Netflix shows or series so I don't really get what the problem would be.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Danny Pasinski Why would you want to watch a show about a time that you are in? Does it seem ironic that the movies are way more interesting than the teen years actually are?
Emma McLaughlin (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I like seeing brand new movies that are not out anywhere else but in the movie theaters. Those are the kinds of movies I like seeing in theaters, but if the movie is out somewhere else where I can watch it at home I prefer watching it as my house. I like being able to pause the movie, get comfortable, and enjoy it in the comfort of my own home. For me there is something special about seeing a movie with a bunch of other people, it makes it more fun and then watching a movie is more of an activity. My dad would talk a lot about seeing movies in the small theater in his small hometown. I have gotten to see a few movies there myself and it is fun to see the place where he used to go as a kid.
Sarah Baab (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
I personally don’t really enjoy movie theaters as a concept, since I’m someone who enjoys discussing media, which is obviously not something you should do in a theater environment. The dark movie environment that doesn’t allow outside snacks has never really appealed to me in comparison to the at home experience of watching movies. Despite this, vintage movie theaters like the New Beverly Cinema have always appealed to me due to their ambiance, which gives them an ambiance that streaming services, and other theaters, can not compete with. This gives theater going a benefit which I don’t think it has under normal circumstances. It gives it more of a theater ambiance, which could make the experience more entertaining for the new movie going audience through the use of a vintage ambiance.
Anna Kilpatrick (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I think that the New Beverly Cinema would be a great place to see a movie. I have never been to any vintage inspired movie theaters, but I think that it would be a great experience. While I personally see more movies on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, I love the experience of seeing a movie on the big screen. Although I like being able to comfortably watch movies at home, I enjoy getting to go to the theater with a couple of friends and watching a movie together. My parents have talked about how much cheaper movie tickets used to be when they were my age. They have also talked about much fun drive-in theaters used to be. These stories are very appealing and I think that getting to see a movie in vintage theaters like the New Beverly Cinema would be an unforgettable experience.
Hannah Krier (Hoggard High School , Wilmington , NC)
@Anna Kilpatrick I do agree that more people today are turning towards Netflix or Hulu for movie options and less people want to get out to go see a movie in a theater. I do enjoy getting to go see a movie in the theater with some of my friends but I also enjoy staying at home and watching a movie. I would to see a movie in a vintage theater because of how my mom talked about them when she was younger.
Sydney Pugh (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I don’t think I’d ever have a dying urge to visit any movie theatres such as New Beverly Cinema, because in general I’ve never been a fan of watching movies in theatres in general. I can see why movie theatres such as the ones listed in the article could be so special for those who’ve been around when their only access to movies was through theatre, but for me I don’t feel any connection. My mom always talks about going to see the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” with her and her friends when they were teens. She said the movie itself was pretty bad, but it wasn’t necessarily about that which made it special. She talked about how the audience would bring water guns and newspapers, and during one scene of the movie it would practically be like it was raining in the movie theatre. Maybe I’ve just been traumatized by too many interactive disney rides, but for me I wouldn’t find it enjoyable. For me, a movie is something I can enjoy by myself. I don't necessarily see the point of watching a movie together with friends to socialize, when we can’t actually socialize when the movie’s playing. Maybe going to one of the old movie theatres may change my mind, or seeing a screening such as “Rocky Horror Movie Picture” may give me a new perspective on just what I’m missing out, but for now I’m fine with enjoying movies at home and not having to pay for overpriced popcorn that I won’t even be able to finish.
Ashton Gray (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Sydney Pugh I completely disagree with you. I feel like movies should be enjoyed with friends and family not alone. One it shows you different opinions and perspectives on how the movie can be interpreted. Also, I wish movie theaters still had water gun fights. I would love that and it would give me memories I would never forget.
shirley (fhs)
I would love to go to the New Beverly Cinema, it sounded like a great place to visit, but not to watch movies. In the movie watching experience, in my opinion, the movies are the main focus of the experience, not the fancy theater. It might be because I’m 15 and never experience the nostalgic feel of 1960’s cinema. Going to the cinema is way better quality wise, you get better graphics, sound system, and bigger screens. but I won’t consider it to be superior than home streaming, with home streaming, you can cry, laugh, and eat without being judge, something you can’t comfortably do in the cinema these days and ticket price is crazy compared to streaming services. Also a lot of movies only do limited release and as someone who’s not in a really popular area, watching something I like is really hard. A lot of older people said that cinema is the best place to watch movies, the vibes, the buttered popcorn, and how watching with a lot of people makes the experience better but I politely disagree. I have watched toy story 3 a lot, it is one of my favorite childhood movie and it always cheer me up and make me cry at the same time and I’m just not comfortable watching it with other people.
Emma McLaughlin (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@shirley I would agree with you, many people think that watching a movie in theaters is way better than in your own house, but I think that many aspects of watching at home make it way better than a theater. I didn't even think about being able to react to the movie, but you give a really good point.
Ana (patino high school)
I like watching movies on Netflix, and Hulu and do like going to the theater to watch a movie. I prefer to watch a movie at a theater than at my house i think is better because you get to spend time with your friends and get to see other movies. I believe that theaters are always but always going to be relevant to society because is something that has been part of our society for years you know and I think theirs something special about theaters that people just love. When a movies comes out you see people at theaters in line to get the tickets so they can watch the movies but they enjoy going to the theater and watching that movies. I think old movies is something that people still watch them and i love watching some old movies.
Anna Kilpatrick (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ana I love getting to leave the house to see a movie too. Although I like getting to sit at home and watch movies, the experience of going to a movie theater is something that cannot be recreated. I agree that movie theaters will stay relevant to society because it is the only place to see some movies when they first come out.
Adel Hrncic (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Movie theaters are one of my favorite places during the winter—because what’s there else to do. On those gloomy, gray weekdays, I look forward to going to the (expensive) movie food stand, buy dangerously buttered popcorn or nachos, grab an unhealthy drink, and watch a movie on a big screen. Yes, I can do this at home, but this feels more of a special occasion type of night: I don’t want to get sick. Plus, I get to go with my favorite person: my brother. He has been taking me to movie theaters for years, and it has become our special tradition, so I’m not surprised why I love movie theaters so much.
Zach Bertrand (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn)
I believe that this world will always have a place for movie theatre's. Personally, I don’t really care for going to the movies just because I think it is easier to just stay at home and rent a movie, or watch one on the various streaming networks. With that being said though, I truly believe that movie theatre’s will always be relevant because a think a lot of people still do enjoy getting out of the house and going to see the latest movie in theatre's. I don’t ever see movie theatre's going out of business or becoming non existent, just because of the value they have held in our society for so long.
Sean Hession (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Like most children, I have heard a lot from my parents about how things were better in the past. I have heard countless stories about how cars were better, the soda was better, and especially how the movies were still prevalent. Movies, for the majority of their existence, have only been viewed in theaters. Until 1997, when streaming platforms like Netflix were created, almost all movies were watched in theaters. When people discovered they could watch the same movies and even TV shows on Hulu and Netflix, consumers flocked to these new services. However, despite the stiff competition, many movie theaters have stayed viable due to their charm and nostalgia. I am young, only fifteen years old. However, movie theaters still hold nostalgia for me. I loved going when I was little, just five or six. Just the smell of buttered popcorn makes me reminisce back to when I attended “Three-dollar Sundays”, when you could watch a classic film for just three dollars. Many people share these feelings of nostalgia, which is what makes movie theaters an extremely enjoyable experience sometimes, instead of binge watching on Netflix. In this way, movie theaters, especially those which hearken back to old times, like the New Beverly Cinema, are providing a valuable service of letting people think back to childhood. And that, the power of nostalgia, will never be overtaken by streaming services, which is why we should all continue to go to and enjoy movie theaters.
Ashley M. (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Although movie theaters seem outdated and unnecessary to many as the popularity of streaming services increase, they still satisfy the demands of moviegoers for easy, affordable access to favorite films and should continue to serve the public. Even though streaming services do offer American consumers the convenience of viewing movies from the comfort of their own home, the prices for most of these services are high and are not practical for those who do not watch movies often. Movie theaters provide these occasional viewers with the option to pay a low price for a one-time showing of a certain movie and do not tie them down to the steep monthly fees of streaming services. In addition to affordability, another benefit for Americans who watch movies in theaters is enjoying a movie in 3D, an experience-enhancing option that is not yet available on streaming platforms. Preserving pop culture in film is just one more way movie theaters serve the public, and should continue to do so for future generations.
Christian Cammack (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
I watch movies all the time. This includes all sorts of movies new and old. I love so many aspects of technology today and how if there's a movie I feel like watching, all I have to do is type it in my phone. With that saying, I also love going to the movie theaters. There's nothing like that feeling of seeing a hyped up movie open night. My dad and I always see the new Star Wars and Marvel movies open night at the movies and it's such a fun experience. Being surrounded by people who love the movies just as much as you and getting to cheer with them at cool parts is the best. Also I've noticed that some things that when I see it in theater will make me bust down laughing with everyone else but when I'm alone at home watching just isn't as funny. Overall I think both ways are great to watch movies with.
Charlotte Todd (Hoggard High School)
As much as I loved going to the movies with my friends growing up, I feel as if the theater has lost its magic. We used to climb all the way to the back and bring lunchables and blankets. Now the theaters fill up every seat so that you are fighting the stranger next to you for the arm rest, they no longer allow bags with blankets, and you can't even laugh without having 20 heads turn your direction. Yes they have new reclining chairs, charging ports, and all kinds of 3-D viewings, but I don't get the same excitement when I go. There's no longer a fountain for me to guess what color it'll be, or big cardboard bodies for me and my friends to take photos in front of during the previews. They're just trying to maximize profits by jamming the rooms, and not allowing good food in. I feel as if I'm better off just watching a movie at home with rather than deal with the judgement and discomfort of the theater. The article talks about a movie theater in LA that plays old movies the way that they used to, which sounds so fun. I think what people do not realize is that while innovations are amazing , some times things are perfect just the way they are.
Cooper (Hoggard High School)
It is definitely hard for me to make time to go to the movies nowadays. It is very easy to stream from home, but seeing a movie on my couch doesn't feel the same as going to the theater. There will always be a part of me that loves to go to the movies to see something I've been excited for for a long time. Going to the theater in middle school with my friends was so much fun for me and I will never forget those days. I recently went to the movies with a few friends and it was still a good time. I think the movies are very overpriced and you have to have food at the movies, which will cost you an arm and a leg. It is more convenient to stream from home and theaters are definitely losing relevance but I think we will always have a place in our hearts for a movie at the theater with friends.
Kali Hatcher (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the movie theater is my 6th grade self and 4 of my friends going and posting about it everywhere. I may not go as much anymore, but it isn't because of online streaming I simply don't have time. Anytime a new movie comes out I say i'm going to see it but I only get to see maybe 30%. This doesn't mean that the movie theater is dying in any way though. I think for many above the age of 10 the movies are more of a sacred place because of the memories that go along with it. The saturday nights with all your friends and of course one of their parents spent at the movies. A few years later you're first date. As the article says “Nostalgia remains one of the theater’s biggest draws” As long as our memories stay so will the enjoyment of going to see a movie at the theater.
Cynthia (L)
My last experience at a movie theater was absolutely horrendous. The over priced food, bad service and rude customers made me uncomfortable. I was watching the new movie Cats with my older sister and her friends and we weren’t able to sit next to each other because the seat assignment didn’t allow four seats in a row. It felt like we were so distanced that it didn’t feel like we were in the same room. If only we went to someones house and watched Netflix we would be able to talk and not waste twenty dollars on tickets and food. Not only would we save money and time by staying at home and watching a movie but also there wouldn’t be strangers arguing with the employees. So to answer the question I think movie theaters are becoming less relevant due to the growing movie/tv show selection including Hulu, Netflix and On Demand etc. Watching movies at home also creates a more bonding experience where you can relax and converse with family and or friends.
Cate (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
As streaming movies has become increasingly popular I find that there have been many occasions where I will see a movie trailer during a commercial break and think "I can't wait to see this when it comes on demand". I enjoy going to see a movie in theaters, I just find that many times it is easier to wait and watch it at home. There will be times when I see a trailer for a movie and I get very busy and forget to go see it in theaters. This is when I get excited to see it has come on demand or to netflix/hulu and I am still able to enjoy the film. However, when I have been anticipating a certain movie for a long time I find it much more exciting to see it in a theater, as the experience is better due to the atmosphere and all of the built up excitement. I do not think movie theaters are irrelevant. There are many films that are a lot more enjoyable in theaters and the experience of going to see that movie makes it even better. While staying home to watch movies is often more convenient for me, I will always enjoy going to a theater to see a movie I have been anticipating.
Ella Shynett (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Even though the majority of the population has multiple streaming services at their disposal, I still go to the movie theater a good amount and enjoy it. Nobody can deny that movie theaters have been losing popularity due to people not wanting to pay for a ticket when they can just wait a couple of months until the movie comes out on streaming services. However, I do feel that watching a movie in theaters is a different experience compared to me just watching it on my laptop in my room. I tend to get distracted when I’m just watching something and will go on my phone or do homework when I’m watching something at home, so I feel like I don’t take in the movie as well. My mom and I watched the movie ‘Parasite’ and even though I thought it was incredible and is probably going to be my favorite movie of the year, I wished I had seen it at the theater. The high-quality sound system and the big screen makes the movie that much better. Maybe I just enjoy the theater due to nostalgia, remembering the times I would go to the movie theater in Florida with my grandpa and watch some movie that my grandpa would fall asleep halfway through, but nonetheless I do think the movie theater improves the movie experience even if it costs a few extra dollars.
Jude Lucido (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
I think movie theaters are losing relevance, but I don't think that streaming platforms are completely at fault. It's just that streaming platforms offer a lot more than movie theatres do. Why would someone pay 20-50 dollars at the movies to see a single film, when they could pay 5 dollars a month to have access to hundreds of different movies, old and new.
Soen McCormick (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
@Jude Lucido yeah movie theaters are only in business because they give surround sound quality and a big screen that a little TV can't give. Movie theaters despite that are quite irrelevant. They are good however to introduce new and exciting movie that are all the big rage. So it depends on what you want.
Ashlee Waitkus (Glenbard West High School, Glen Ellyn,IL)
Despite the recent explosion in popularity of streaming resources, movie theaters still hold nostalgic value that is incomparable. Just about the only thing me and my dad have in common is our love of movies. We love to watch Terantino, Kubrick and Wes Anderson films at home via streaming, but when a favorite director comes out with a new movie, seeing it in theaters enhances the entire experience. The giant screen, surround sound and popcorn make it feel like an event, a premiere. Movie theaters are also a place where people with common interests can gather. In Austin, Texas my family and I went to a special showing of 2001 a Space Odyssey, a movie you wouldn’t normally be able to see on streaming or in theaters, and it was a unique experience. Next to me sat an older man who absolutely loved the movie, he told me about how he went to the premiere in the 70s and it changed his life because he had never seen anything like it. If movie theaters went out of style, I never would have met that man and heard his heartwarming stories. Movies bring people together, and movie theaters are the avenue that allows these connections to grow.
Cooper (Hoggard High School)
@Ashlee Waitkus I agree I love the movies and even with recent streaming services, the movies at the theater are just more fun
Madelyn Elvart (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Even with how much streaming services have gained popularity and how much more convenient they can be, I still love going to movie theaters. There are certainly plenty of films that you can get the same experience out of if you watch them at home, but I still love to go to the local theater for the movies I’m most excited to see. If I’ve been waiting for something to come out, it’s almost a tradition to go to a theater just to see it a little bit earlier, enjoy the atmosphere, and be in a place where everyone else is just as hyped about it as I am. I know a loud audience may bother many people, but I personally really like when the audience laughs or goes crazy together about something they’ve seen on screen.
Olivia Tank (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Madelyn Elvart I go to movie theaters to experience the movies I am the most excited about too. I agree that the atmosphere is so completely different than that of your own home. When I'm watching movies at home, even when I'm with my whole family, it is still just that: watching a screen. In the theaters, the popcorn, the amazing sound, the huge screen, and the pre-movie buzz in the air create an atmosphere that perfectly feeds into my excitement. Even though going to the theater is much more expensive, I think the experience is worth it for movies you are looking forward to. Sometimes the wait for a particular movie to be mainstream released is just too long. Also, the whole theater concept is very unifying partially because of how long they've been around. Most movies are made with a goal of appealing to the broadest audience possible, so finding a movie that I would love to see along with people like my grandparents is not difficult. Being able to share this experience is something we cherish in my family. If movie theaters were to completely go out of style, I wouldn't be able to bond over my shared love of movies with them.
Molly Howard (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
There has been a great increase in the use of streaming services in place of going to the movie theatre, but to me, there is something special about going to the movies. It really hits different when you get that buttery, greasy, salty popcorn. And that big cup of your most favorite soda while watching a movie that you have seen millions of trailers for. The excitement as you watch the beginning trailers. The intensity of the plot during the movie surrounded by darkness. And that wonderful feeling at the end of the movie while the final credits roll. So yes, digitization streaming platforms has transformed the ways we view movies, but nothing beats a day at the theatre.
Christian Cammack (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
@Molly Howard I totally agree. I think streaming movies is great and all but nothing can beat that feel of seeing a movie at theaters. The food is like it was made for viewing a movie and I love the hype we get to see things on open night.
McKenna Copeland (Lubbock, TX)
Advancements in technology and more specifically film have caused both lackluster and fascination within the movie-watching community. Although it is great to have so many outlets to watch movies, it’s also given people more incentive to stay home and watch Netflix instead of going to the movies. Going out to see a movie can help a person become more socially active by bringing their friends or simply receiving that much needed human interaction for the common introvert, who would much rather stay at home and watch something alone in their bedroom. The atmosphere of a movie theater is also pleasant because it forces us to put down our phones and let the story in front of us consume us. We smell buttery popcorn as the lights dim, the music starts to play from the surround-sound speakers, our friends sit next to us attentively, and we enjoy the movie on a huge, clear screen. I hope that seeing movies in a theater doesn’t go out of style because I believe it is a different experience to see it in the movie theater.
Karen P. (Glenbard West Highschool Glen Ellyn, IL)
Although technology has expanded into the world of streaming movies/tv and has given people an easier access to these services with a touch of a finger, I personally love to go to the theaters and watch new and upcoming movies and spend time with family and friends. It’s a way to get off the couch, go outside, enjoy and connect with people you are close with. My family and I love to go to the movies often, especially when a movie we all want to watch is coming out in the theaters. We get to reconnect and unite as a family to relax and have fun and escape from reality. I do still love Netflix and Hulu to watch shows that don’t play in theaters. However, going out to the theaters and spending quality time with the people you love is what I really enjoy the most.
Josie S. (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Netflix and other streaming sites have grown a lot in popularity in the last couple years and are still continuing to because of their convenience and wide selection of not only movies but shows as well. While I use Netflix a lot I still try to and like seeing movies in an actual theater. If it’s a movie release that I’ve been waiting for or becomes really hyped up by the public, I would way rather see i it in the theater, because with the theater comes more of an experience that I enjoy sharing with my friends and family. The atmosphere the big screen, the loud speakers, dim lights, and the food make the trip out well worth it for me. I pay more attention and get into the film if I’m sitting in a theater without most distractions, where as at home I might be distracted easily. Also, movie theaters provide the film right as it comes out while I feel like streaming sites are used for older movies and shows as you have to wait for new movies to come on them, while some don’t get put on at all. So, although streaming services provide more convenience movie theaters provide a more fun experience and they should be kept open for movie lovers.
Isabella Fabiano (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@Josie S. I agree with you on this so much. I definitely think that seeing a movie up close and in the theaters is so much more fun and the experience is awesome. some people just forget about how fun it could be to see a movie in the theaters. When I watch a movie at home, I get so distracted whether it be my phone or someone talking to me, in the theaters you are so invested in the movie and can't pick up your phone because its not allowed and if you talk, you get shushed. I don't think people give enough credit to the theaters anymore.
Emily Suit (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Josie S. I completely agree with this. I think that its all about the experience, you don't get the same experience sitting in your room in the middle of the day and renting a movie by yourself as you do when you go out to the theater with your friends.
Gabriel W (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn IL)
I personally believe that while it’s more convenient to stay at home and watch movies, certain movies are more enjoyable to go see in theaters. I also believe that going to see movies at a theater shouldn’t be an everyday thing, and that the experience should be for special occasions. I don’t go to the movie theater often, but when I do it’s for big time movies that wouldn’t have the same visual and audible effects as watching them at home.
Kamila Irsalieva (hoggard high school in Wilmington, NC)
@Gabriel W Totally agree with you. Sometimes its just more enjoyable to see a movie in cinema neither than sit at home and watch it on tv or a computer. Even the idea of going somewhere out of your home to watch a movie is already good. People thought books will go away but they are still popular, soo.I like watching movies in theaters as well as I like to see them at home. And I don’t think it will ever change for me.
Bridget McBride (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
While movie theaters have definitely become less relevant overtime, they are still important to have as an escape from home and a way to watch movies with friends. I don’t go to movie theaters very often but when I do it’s a fun experience because the theaters have developed into more than just a place for watching a movie. They now have waiters that serve popcorn and food directly to your seat and have comfy reclining chairs. Movie theaters have been adapting to our times in order to stay in business and it has been working. Movie theaters are also still in business because you can’t watch them at home when they first come out. This causes more people to go to the theater and it is a fun experience to watch new released movies with friends.
Daniel Guy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
As a busy teenager I usually don’t have the time to go to the movies and see these new movies on the big screen. Now I am used to sitting on my bed, opening Netflix or Hulu, and just hanging out at home. A part of me does miss going to the movies when I was younger with my family and friends and getting that feeling of excitement when you entered the cinema, getting to embrace the amazing smell of buttered popcorn and candy. The feeling of the movies is unique and no where will ever feel as good as going to see the movies on the big screen, and I don’t think that it will be going away any time soon.
Katie Block 2 (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I didn’t think there was even a debate about this topic. I would always choose seeing a movie in the theater over streaming it at home. The experience of watching a movie is completely different in a movie theater setting. Most people probably prefer streaming because of the convenience and they can watch a movie as many times as they want all in the comfort of their own home. I’m different in this way. When I see a movie in theaters it is very likely that I will go back and see it a few more times. Of course I love watching movies on Netflix, Prime Video or Disney + because it is convenient and of course I can watch movies that aren’t in theaters anymore but I still believe that movie theaters are still very much relevant in our times.
Grace Trimpey-Warhaftig (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
While Im not opposed to getting in my bed curling up with a blanket and opening up my laptop to watch some netflix, I have to admit there is something special about going to the movies to watch the latest films. Movie theaters are good for hanging out with special friends, there are few things better than the buttery movie theater popcorn and the 10 by 30 feet large screen. The atmosphere in the movies is just different. You have people to laugh and cry with. It’s hard for me to describe the atmosphere but it surely is one worth remembering. I would never want to give up the movie theaters no matter how convenient streaming can be.
Katie Block 2 (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Grace Trimpey-Warhaftig I agree with what you have to say. The movie theater experience is something I would never trade. The atmosphere fuels emotions that wouldn't be the same watching at home.
Michele Mastropieri (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I believe movie theatre’s are extremely relevant now and probably always will be. The experience of the cinema is unmatchable, the smell of fresh (or not so fresh) popcorn, the layer of salt and butter that covers your hands and the big screen are all staples of teenage life. Sure Netflix and Hulu may give you more bang for your buck as well as being extremely convenient, but they don’t offer the same atmosphere and feeling a trip to the cinema does. Seeing a movie that just got released also helps people connect and socialize with peers, reviews and opinions allow for people that don’t really socialize to make substantive conversations with their peers using a common interest most people have. So in essence theaters may be more of a hassle but its worth the work to experience the work of art where it was meant to be played.
Ava P. (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
As a busy teenager overwhelmed by the abundance of Netflix and Hulu movies, I rarely find myself venturing out to the nearest movie theater to see the latest films. Convenience wise, I often find myself waiting for the movie to come out on a streaming site and will then watch the movie there, but then again I’m not a big movie watcher. However, as a kid I LOVED going to the movies. It was always an event. I loved the movie theater popcorn and giant icees accompanies by a comfy chair to relax in. Movie theaters have really upped their game in the past ten years. Movie theaters around me have reclining chairs, waitress service and now serve full on meals. I think this definitely entices customers to the theater and definitely enhances the experience. I think the movie theaters described in the article seem fascinating and I would love to visit one and watch a movie. I think movie theaters do bring out a sense of community and I want to try and go see movies in theaters more.
Daniel Guy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ava P. I also agree that if your busy and have a lot to do that the movies is a little far fetched but I still believe that going to the movies is something that will never be forgotten by me or anyone who went to the cinema as a kid.
Jamaelle Guerrier (Orlando, FL)
I love going to the movie theater to watch a newly come out movie. There is just a certain excitement that is associated with the movie theater. But as much as I enjoy the movie theater atmosphere and food I don't go often. I also love staying at home in my pajamas and watching a movie on my bed. Because of all the ways to stream show and movies, theaters don't seem as important. Especially if it will be available to the public in a couple of weeks anyway. When you watch the movie at home you can pause it, rewind it, change the volume and the food is free. Making movie theaters seem less and less relevant. But I still enjoy the experience they provide.
Simone Cronier (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I didn’t realize movie theaters were becoming a thing of the past. While I do watch a lot more movies on Netflix, I just thought that came with the accessibility that streaming services have. For me, going to the cinemas is a special occasion done with friends or family. There’s just something about watching a movie with random people and buttery popcorn in the back of a dark room on a giant screen that just improves the quality of the experience. Trader Joe’s Movie Theater Popcorn, my bed, and a computer screen just don’t have the same impact. While I spend more time on Netflix, the best way to watch a movie is definitely the movie theater. For me, Netflix is for television shows. In the cinemas, there’s a connection between the audience and I. Everyone laughs together at all the good parts and the theater is packed with other families. There’s zero chance at the same connection alone in my room. That’s why I’m glad that the New Beverly Hills sold out so many screenings. I haven’t seen “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but if it has brought so many people together in an era where theaters apparently aren’t as popular, I approve. I couldn’t imagine watching a movie over 10 times in a season like Martino did, but I appreciate her enthusiasm. I don’t have nostalgia attached to the theater like she does, but I’ve also never stopped to think about the impact that streaming services have had on other platforms. That being said, I would stick with the cinemas here in Wilmington.
Cooper Hyldahl (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Simone Cronier Another thing about the movies is the social aspect. You mentioned that curling up in bed with some Trader Joe's popcorn doesn't have the same effect as going to the movie theater and I think it is because of the social aspect. Going to the movie theater, you expect to share those moments with friends and family and it makes the experience more wholesome. You also mentioned that it is a special occasion to go to the movie theaters and I think that is an important reason why we appreciate it so much. I can watch Netflix in my bed any time I want, but going out to the movie theater is an anticipated activity that you have to plan out in advance and thus look forward to it. That being said, I can see why some people are shifting away from movie theaters. If you are in a big group or have kids, it can get expensive quickly. Netflix is cheap and doesn't cost more the more you use it. With both of those sides of the argument to consider, I understand why people are moving away from theaters and towards streaming platforms, but I still think that going to a theater is a fun treat we should indulge in every once in a while.
Natalia Rivera (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
I barely turn on the TV these days, much less watch movies. I'm not an avid movie watcher. Didn't watch any of the hyped up movies for this year. But I do enjoy watching movies with friends. It's one of the activities we do most often when we're together. Often times we go to the movie theater to watch that one foreign movie that is only released for one day and will never be sold in America. Sometimes it's to watch the movie that we've all been making fun of for the past year because of how terrible it looks in the trailers, and we know we're never going to buy. Many times, it's for a birthday planned at the last minute, where we picked a movie that sounded pretty neat and ended up enjoying ourselves. I feel as though the experience of watching something on a tablet is not the same as it being on a big screen. Which is hilarious coming from me who watches all of my favorite shows on a Tablet. I have an excuse though, and it's that my favorite shows aren't on American Cable TV. But theaters are much more fitting for movies. Because shows are all about binge watching and taking every episode in one sitting like a bulldozer. But movies since the beginning were all about that grand image. The big presence. Sure there are popular shows, but you don't see them get nearly as hyped up as popular movies.
Muhammad Siddiqui (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
For me personally this answer is very obvious—movie theaters are definitely relevant in today’s society. Although I do sometimes watch movies at home on either my TV or my phone, nothing beats going to a movie theater as the experience is just so much better than watching at home due to amenities like the big screen, the amazing sound quality, and, of course, the popcorn. I myself go to movie theaters quite frequently as it is something me and my friends love to do, and also with the constant releases of movies in today’s cinema, I always have a reason to go back. But the answer to the question, “Are movie theaters still relevant?”, may be different for other people. With the huge increase in popularity of streaming services like Netflix in the past few years, it seems that less and less people are going to movie theaters. There has been a decline in both movie theater ticket sales and movie theater attendance for the past couple years and it seems that the trend will continue on. Although the popularity of streaming services is a major factor in the decline, there is also another possible reason: the prices. The prices at movie theaters are a factor in the declining popularity of theaters because having a subscription to a movie-streaming service is a much cheaper alternative than going to a movie theater for every new movie that is released.
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
I always had thought movie theaters were this wonderful place where you could escape from reality for a few hours. In fact I still do, but is it worth it? Whenever I go to the movies I always get a snack and drink. I like to feel the full experience of going to a movie theater even though I've already been there so many times. Now that I'm getting older and making money, I think to myself, do I really want to spend money on this movie that I could just live stream later? Usually I don't go unless my friend really wants to. During summer I will rarely go just because it's nice outside and I like to be out moving around. I'll try to find that movie on Netflix later or ask my dad if he has it on one of his movie apps. Now during winter it's a different story. I go to the movies almost every time I hang out with friends during winter because it is freezing outside. Movies help me escape that harsh weather for a minute. My favorite movie to see in a theater is action movies. This is because there's so much going on on a big screen it makes it ten times better. When I'm alone or streaming something I like horror movies because it makes my reaction more intense. Still, to this day, I will believe movie theaters are the best way to watch a movie.
Isabella Fabiano (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I personally think that movie theaters are very relevant. They are a good place to go on a date or with your friends or family if you just want to get out of the house. I think that they are really helpful because when some movies come out they are only out in theaters and you can't get them through Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc. technology has taken over so much that you don’t have to leave your house to see a movie and I think you could take that in a good way or bad way. I personally think it is a lot of fun to go to the theater. It's a good rainy day activity but also being that theaters are usually in malls of shopping centers, you have stuff to do after the movie. It's always frustrating when you want to see a certain movie and its not on Netflix or other streaming platforms because it's still in theaters. On the other hand I think that it is very nice to be able to come home from school or work and curl up on your bed to watch a movie. Sometimes it is just easier to stay in and invite some friends over and watch movies all night without having to pay for a ticket or get all dressed to go out to the movies.
Devon W. (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
Being able to visit the New Beverly Cinema, or any vintage-inspired movie theater, would be a magical experience and although I didn’t personally experience the popular emergence of movie theaters in all its wonders during that time, the moviegoing experience has remained unparalleled compared to other sources of entertainment. Growing up, movie theaters have begun to implement new technology into their institutions to provide the most comfiest, breathtaking moviegoing experience and improve the longevity and consumer appeal of cinemas. Despite the rise of digital streaming services, the convenience of at-home entertainment does not provide the same experience as being able to enjoy a brand new film on the day of release with friends and family, while sharing a mutual interest with hundreds of other strangers in the same theater. Moviegoing is an experience and tradition that’s been passed down through generations and has established itself as a concrete part of history and culture. And while digital streaming continues to improve and build upon their benefits, movie theaters will also continue to remain a vital and viable source of entertainment and provide an enjoyable, memorable experience worth more than the cost of a ticket.
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)

There's a sort-of excitement to going to a movie theater instead of just sitting on a couch or a bed and watching whatever just popped onto Netflix or Amazon Prime. Even though I do watch a number of movies on those services, nothing beats looking at a giant screen and having surround sound and popcorn and a drink probably way too big for me. When you go to a cinema it’s the experience of watching a movie that I remember and enjoy, I think small theaters like the one mentioned in the article have a very laid back vibe and is better with friends than alone.
Akye Nixon-McCray (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
While the New Beverly theater might see a high amount of people, many theaters across the country have been drawing less and less attention. There has always been a charm about going to the cinema. Seeing a movie with your friends and family all in one place. Being able to experience it together is one of the most fun things. Sometimes the effort it takes to plan when and who you are going with is worth it. However, sometimes it’s not. It is much easier nowadays to sit at home and watch movies and your computer, tv, and many other devices. With some quick and simple steps, you can be immersed in the movie in a flash. This shows the threat that streaming services offer over movies. Comfortably and easy ways of watching your favorite things. Because let’s be honest, most of us are lazy anyway. I think the only thing that is keeping movie theaters afloat is the fact that movies don’t come to streaming services until a couple of months after the theatrical release. Otherwise, there would be no point in going to one. In general, movies have been receiving less and less money at the box office, unless it’s a superhero movie. People aren’t going to see something that doesn’t have superheroes flying around and blasting people. The industry as a whole is going through a major shift in produced content. Movies like Marriage Story that would have come out in movie theaters in the past, is now a Netflix exclusive movie.
Greyson M (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, Illinois)
Movie theaters are dying and for good reason. While some people reminisce about the golden age of cinema where movie theaters thrived, most agree that on your couch with popcorn that isn't 10 dollars is the way to go. It's pretty simple. Why pay 20 bucks to dress up, drive over, sit awkwardly in a room with strangers, just to see a movie? I know for some movies this is the only way you can see them but this concept is also dying too. Streaming services are now releasing movies on their sites, instead of the box office. And without a doubt, this has given the movies more access and in turn more recognition than ever before. It's two sided and a pretty clear choice. The days of movie theaters are slowly dying and rightfully so.
Mason Buckner (JTHoggard High School)
@Greyson M Yeah it is true that it is easier to stream or watch a movie from the comfort of your own home, I think theaters are more fun with friends or family instead of by yourself.
Grace Van Petten (Glenbard West Glen Ellyn)
Although, personally I’d much rather watch a movie in the comfort of my own home, I believe movie theaters are still relevant. Sometimes going to the movie theatre can be a special occasion or a regular thing people do. One of the reasons I go to the movie theaters is if there is a new movie I’m excited to see and can’t wait until it comes out on Netflix or Hulu. Another reason is for a special occasion or a night out with my friends. There’s something more special about leaving your couch, getting ready, buying snacks, and watching a movie with friend's. Another, important part about movies is how important they are to some people like my sister. She goes to movies almost 3-4 times a month with friends and that’s their special bond. Movie fanatics would be very very sad without movie theaters.
Joel (Glenbard west)
Movie theater would still be relevant no matter what changes in the future. There’s already movies you can see from your phone and at home. Yet people still go to theaters to be very first to have seen movies that have just come out. movies always hit theaters first and when it get to device it or any social media like Netflix would take about maybe few months. theaters is like why wait to see it on phone when you can see it on the big screen and also maybe be first.
Brayan Gonzalez (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
In today’s age where technology is such a big part of what we do on a daily basis, it is easy to assume, that movie theaters will not be relevant, but I believe that theaters will in fact continue to go strong and most likely be even more relevant in the future than it already is. There is just something about being in a room full of other people who are also eager to watch the same movie that you are about to watch that just convinces you to come back each time a new movie comes out. One of the biggest reasons for this is most likely the fact that theaters get rid of all distractions, you can be almost guaranteed that there will be no distractions while you watch the movie as long as everyone is respectful. Theaters allow you to disconnect from the internet and be more present, whether it’s by yourself or with a group of friends with nothing to worry about for two hours. It may also be the environment that movie theaters provide for you like the sound quality of the speakers that make you feel as if you were in the movie, and not to mention the comfortable chairs you get to sit in throughout the movie. There is just something so addicting about movie theaters that keeps us wanting to go back.

Overtime it seems that movie theaters are becoming irrelevant. Yet, I have learned from the older generations in my life that movie theaters are a place that takes us on magical adventures that can never be taken away from us. Also theaters will always have an upper hand over just watching movies at home, because of the ambiance that they generate. According to my elders they watched most of their movies in drive-in-movies and at theaters. I have been told that the big screens in theaters present the persona that the actors are portrayed as a lot bigger than us, and so are the stories they are telling. I think that this perspective of how movie theaters can take our mind anywhere we want just by watching them on larger screens with better surround sound rather than on a small tv in our living rooms is completely accurate. This is why movie theaters will stay relevant even in an age of digital streaming.
Isabella Martinez (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
While reading the article, I can understand why the movie theater is considered to be relevant. However, with a new generation or movie watchers, theaters are not as appealing. The New Beverly Cinema seems like an extraordinary place to visit, but such historic theaters are not prominent around the country. Most theaters today want to look towards the future with reclining seats and food delivery; theaters hardly reflect on the vintage past like the New Beverly Cinema. Some aspects of Mr. Perlin’s argument that going to the movies is better than streaming are relevant. Hanging out with friends on the weekends, going on date nights, having a birthday party, or just wanting to get away from home are some of the positives of going to the movies. However, the cinema is slowly dying out. Movie prices are considered too expensive to some individuals with prices reaching 10 dollars per person. Streaming services allow for multiple movies to be watched for the same price. Streaming services also allow an individual to relax in one’s own home. Sometimes theaters are too crowded, especially if it is opening night for a movie. Individuals don’t have to worry about beating the crowds of finding seats with services like Netflix or Hulu right in their living rooms. With society growing, people changing, and the need for a faster pace of life, movie theaters are slowing losing sentimental value.

Reading about the New Beverly Cinema makes me feel almost nostalgic for a time I wasn't alive. At first, I pictured the people watching "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" in the New Beverly Cinema like they were the ones in a movie. I picture sparkling decorations in the lobby filled with people who all know each other, talking about anything that makes them laugh every ten seconds. Then I remembered, that they were just people watching one movie away from their living room tvs like me. I watch a movie in a theater maybe three or four times a year, but the rest are on my living room couch or in my bed. My family has Netflix and Hulu, and between those two services I can find about any movie that I want to. With the amount of movies that I watch, paying a monthly fee for a streaming them saves a lot more money than going out to go see a movie. As much as I love going to the movie theater with my friends every once in a while, streaming them off of Netflix is a lot more practical. Although using a service like Netflix or Hulu is the best option most of the time, something that's on my bucket list is to visit a drive in movie theater. There's not one near where I live, and even if there was I don't think that I would go to it most of the time, but they look like a lot of fun. I think that they bring an old fashioned feel to watching a movie that would be fun to experience.
Velma Martinez (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Any place that is vintage always astonishes me with how much times have changed. You're really able to appreciate the history and the present. Even though I've never been to a vintage theater, I'd love to visit one. I definitely have to agree with Mr. Perlin, something about experiencing a movie for the first time in a huge theater with other strangers within the comfort of the theater walls is always fun for everyone. Plus, the smell of popcorn is always a memorable feature. Sometimes my parents will talk about what it was like in "their days", like how they would go to the drive-in theater. They'd talk about how fun it was to hang out and watch movies with friends, and dates. Their stories always seemed like they would be fun to experience. The movie I've watched the most with my entire life is probably James Cameron Avatar. I was really young when the movie came to theaters, so I first watched it at my cousins house, and from there I watched the movie just whenever it came on TV. To this day though, whenever a really interesting movie comes to theaters I always go watch it. Also I'm very excited for Avatar 2 to come to the theater, I'll definitely go watch it with my sister. So I think movie theaters should stick around forever, because they always are a great experience along with great memories.

Movie theaters will be relevant for the near future because of the social aspect they bring. While it seems like everybody is on the internet 24/7 nowadays a lot people prefer real life social interaction. The theater offers a very simple experience that you can do with you friends that takes little to no energy out of you, the theater is also always a good way to segue into a meal. Many people enjoy eating out but it can be hard to convince yourself to get out of the house. Movies are such a huge industry in modern society and an experience perfectly tailored to watching a movie will obviously hold some longevity. I do however see the many negatives that can very easily put the movie theater at a disadvantage. We grow more concerned about health and preventing illnesses every day and being in an enclosed room for two hours with 100 people can definitely disturb the germaphobe population. The movie theater also requires you to drive out, costing gas money and then the price to watch the movie itself. This is a lot more pricey than waiting for the movie to come out on Netflix. Lastly the sharp increase in mass shootings detours many people from large public spaces and the movie theater is definitely a location where something like that has happened and can happen in the future. There is a strong case against the lifetime of movie theaters however I believe that in the near future at current technology status, they will survive.
Jocelyn Shelby (Bryant High Shcoold)
In today's society, most movies and shows are available on a cellphone which most everyone has in 2020.This allows for a movie anywhere you are. Although this is a good way of watching Television, this allows a movie in the theater to be even more special. For this reason, most people might find it more relaxing to go to the movies, kick back, enjoying no chaos around them. The chances of you remembering a movie at home versus the movie at the theaters the movie theaters provides a more memorable experience for everyone. Movie theaters also have been around for a long time, and have also been the first place to preview a new movie. It also allows you to bond with other people who enjoy the same movie which makes the movie so much more special too.
Kali Hatcher (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Jocelyn Shelby I completely agree. Going to the movies in today's world seems so much more special than sitting at home with your laptop in your bed. The movies are also very symbolic for most because that's where they went on their first "date" or experienced other firsts. The movie theater has and always will be special no mater how many movies they release on Netflix or Hulu. Watching these at home doesn't give you the experience most crave while enjoying a movie.

In my opinion movie theatres are still very relevant in America. They provide a location for friends to congregate, and also you can't say that you would rather watch Interstellar on your tablet than on a huge movie screen. There is also just a special atmosphere at movie theatres and drive-in theatres that you can't really replicate anywhere else. The smell of popcorn, the surround sound, and the murmuring of people in the audience is,to me, an experience like none other that I wish my generation will come to realize before it's too late. New Beverly Cinema sounds like a great place to be, much better than laying on your bed alone watching Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie.
Matthew Byrnes (Hoggard Wilmington NC)
Of course they are still relevant. Whenever a new movie is released or is about to come out they don't immediately stream it to Netflix, or Hulu for you to watch. Netflix and Hulu still have to get the rights to stream it on their services, and yes you could wait until the movies are released to them, but by that time everyones already seen the movie in theaters. You’ll have to avoid spoilers until it releases on Netflix. Streaming services are only good for rewatching past movies that you like, or watching TV shows that are made by the Corporation. And where else are you going to ask for someone to go on a first date with, not to your house on the first time, but instead at the Movie Theater where you can buy them popcorn and a drink. How romantic...
William A. (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
Although Movie Theaters seem to be on the verge of extinction, their ability to create jobs and house the utmost important box-office revenues will continue to keep their relevance. Movie theatres have always been a place to bring together teenagers and families. When any new movie comes out, movie theatres are the first ones to release the movie. The key job of holding the first showings of movies is something no other type of industry can take away. On top of this, there is a whole job based around movie theatres and the ability for patrons to attend a movie when it first comes out: movie/film critics. The movie critics stance in pop culture to give insight about a movie and give their opinions shapes the entire industry and determines what movies will continue to be made, and which ideas will be scrapped for more relevant film topics. This vital role in shaping American relevancy cannot be accomplished by any other branch of the entertainment industry. In final point, movie theatres house opportunities for teenagers to seek their first commercial employment. In America, 26.4 percent of 16-19 year olds in the country are unemployed and are searching for jobs. Movie theatres provide an opportunity to receive job experience in the professional world. Movie Theatres will continue to stay relevant for generations and generations to come, no matter the amount of streaming services pop up.
Sydney Humphrey (Bryant High School)
Movie Theaters are still relevant in the age of digital streaming due to the variety of choices they offer. One can decide to eat popcorn or a pretzel, to sit up close or sit in the back to view it from all angles. Watching it digitally takes away the main choices like leather butter on the popcorn or to put a little dab. Also, it takes away the escape factor. Phones are always around and watching a show is routinely, but the movie theater offers that escape from normalcy to fantasy no matter the movie. Critics might say that one could escape from normalcy to fantasy from watching the movie at their homes. However, homes are filled with noise, chaos, and distractions. Reality would be staring one right in the face meaning they never escaped. Everyone desires a few minutes or hours to forget their present state in life not having to think or worry. Movie theaters are that for people. Not to forget that this form of escape accompanies many wonderful choices. No one could forget what an enormous bucket of popcorn dripping with butter from all sides tastes like. Digital steaming has limitations, but movie theaters are limitless.
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
First it was the movie theatre where everybody gathered to watch movies and enjoy themselves. Then cable TV came out and people only went to the movies to see the latest creation. Then streaming services took over and now people are enthused with new shows with new seasons that you can watch from the comfort of your own toilet seat. Why go to the movie theatre? The same thing was said about red box. Why go rent a movie when I can rent it from home? Convenience is the final nail in the coffin for the theatres along with expensive food and sequels to the same franchises that have been beaten into a pulp and then respread everywhere. There are very few "new" movies coming out.
Mollie Brinker (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Yates Kirby I understand your point about society advancing and no longer needing movie theatres, but there is truly something special about the excitement of the huge screen, exceptional sound, social experience, and candy that will always make theatres fun for me. When a new movie comes out that sounds interesting, or if a friend thinks it does, I love going to the movies with them. Yeah, you’re not all cozied up on your couch (or toilet, Yates), but the comfy chairs and big show-screen are worth it. Maybe movie theatres will be completely unimportant a few generations from now, but I will never forget fun trips to the movies with my friends and hope that kids and teens years from now get to experience it too.
Francine Wei (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Yates Kirby I agree. There are some series that were very good but have been dragged on with seven followup movies to soak off of the popularity that the first one had. My friend and I once talked about all the entertainment innovations for convenience and spoke of how one day, one platform is going to take every show and movie and combine it and reinvent cable again (instead of having to pay for different platforms like Disney Plus and Netflix because they offer exclusive content).
Kaitlyn Conoscenti (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
When I am given the choice between going to the movie theater or staying at home to watch a movie, most of the time I choose to go to the movie theater. Personally, I do both, I stream movies at home on Netflix and I occasionally go to the movie theater. Many people enjoy going to the movie theater for the memorable experiences. I believe that going to the movie theater is the best because there are all different types of snacks, surround sound, and a dark room free of distractions. Streaming movies at home has its benefits too though, such as there being a wide variety of movies to pick from that are both new and old. Personally, if a movie comes out that I really want to see, I will buy tickets and go to the theater right away, and if I didn't have the option of watching the movie in theaters, then I would have to wait a long time to see it. Overall, I believe that the best way to experience a movie is to watch it in the theaters.
Sophia Caparelli (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
Personally, I love the feeling of going out to see a movie. I think that theaters are a fun and important part of who we are as Americans and a great aspect of my childhood. Unfortunately, internet streaming seems to become more and more popular every day. I would love to visit the New Beverly Cinema so that I could live through what my parents and even grandparents tell me about their experiences as teenagers. Now I have not been to any old-fashioned movie theaters, but one that I would eventually love to visit is a drive-in. I see drive-ins in movies and tv shows all the time and I think they are the coolest thing. I don’t have one near me but I think it’d be such a cool experience to have one in my town or to even visit one and be able to watch a movie like my parents did. I like to have a combination of watching shows on Netflix and going out to the movie theater. I like the experience of the theater, but the prices are now way too much. I have access to thousands of movies and shows on any television in my house. Although, the movies are something I do occasionally with my friends, streaming services like Netflix are much more easily accessible and have a wider variety of content.
Velma Martinez (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Sophia Caparelli I agree with your perspective. Movie theaters are an awesome thing to be able to experience, but it's a bummer that it's really expensive to have to watch a movie in theaters. When it's so much more convenient to just be able to watch Netflix or some other type of movie streaming service. Even though it's expensive, something about watching a movie in theaters is always super fun.
Sadie Dunne (Hoggard High school in Wilmington, NC)
@Sophia Caparelli Going to a new movie or planning to see a movie with your friends/family in theaters is always something exciting to look forward to. I agree with you, getting the chance to experience what it would be like to watch movies from the standpoint of a drive-in theater as shown in old movies and tv-shows would be a really cool and fun experience. Hearing about how going to the movies was such a big event for teens and kids back when our parents were growing up is especially hard to imagine now because we can access almost any movie at home with just a few clicks. Personally, I feel the same way in that going to the movies with people is still quite enjoyable. It’s an experience that you get to share with them, and it’s nice to be able to see a new movie on a huge screen before it’s accessible from home. Although you’re right, movies today are increasingly more expensive than they used to be.
Kendall Hermanson (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
For me, movie theaters represent a vital component of American history; your parents and grandparents tell you stories about how they would go on dates at the movie theater, spend time there with friends, and even work there as a high school job. With that being said, nostalgia is definitely a big component to the appeal of movie theaters. In American society I think the draw to a time that is not spent looking at a laptop screen, or scrolling through social media is so strong that it is institutions like movie theaters that grab our attention, and leave us wondering about the past and how life used to be. Personally, I love the idea of going to see a movie on a a Friday night with friends, or even on a date, and being able to have an experience that is more about the people you are with, and the time that is spent with them, rather than the actually movie that is being seen. It is a cool concept, and it one that draws attention to growing void of people that are more comfortable staying staying at home, rather than going out and experience life and everything that it has to offer.
Madalynn Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
@Kendall Hermanson I agree i think the fact that we hear stories from our families about it makes it more exciting
Morgan Clifford (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I went to the movie theater last weekend with my grandma, mom and sister. We went to go see Little Women — which you can only see in theaters right now. I think that many people want to go to the movies so that they can see the movie that they have been waiting to see since the release instead of being anxious waiting for it to be released on television. Also, many people enjoy just simply getting out of the house and having something to do on a rainy day, or a day where there is nothing to do; it is more exciting to leave the house then just stay at home sometimes. However, it is also nice to just stay home and watch a movie without having to worry about being too loud while you are commenting on the movie or eating too loud. Another reason is that it is a way to bring family together and spend time together. We knew that my grandma wanted to see Little Women so we thought that we would go see it together instead of separately and it was a lot of fun! Although my family and I are not huge movie lovers and do not exactly care what theater we go to, we do enjoy every once in a while going to the movies.
Mairead Benson (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
I believe that movie theaters are a critical part of American culture, from the seats to the big screen to the candy and popcorn. Our parents and grandparents spent Friday nights at movie theaters and drive-in movie theaters with their friends all throughout high school, and they always tell us how those nights were some of the best of their childhood. I don’t go to the movies all too often, but when I do, the movies always seem so much better than they do when I watch them at home. Maybe it’s because the movie screen is bigger than my living room TV, or because movie theater popcorn is without a doubt better than microwave popcorn, or because you can’t watch 3-D movies at home - yet. But I believe that it’s more the fact that I feel connected with generations of American teens, and the all-American culture itself. With movie streaming becoming more widely used all over the world, movie theaters have lost a bit of their previous appeal because now you can cuddle up on your couch with a fuzzy blanket and not have to worry about all those annoying people making noises and talking during the movie. But no matter how popular Netflix or Hulu becomes, we American kids will never lose our love for the silver screen.
Abbey I. (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
As I read through this article the first vintage way to watch movies that came to my mind was drive in movies. I personally have never been to one, but I do know there is one about 3 hours north of where I live, and it is for sure on my bucket list. How many people have actually been at a drive-in movie, not a lot. Although being able to stream movies through Netflix or Hulu is very convenient, it doesn't compare to the experience you will have at a drive-in movie or a regular movie theatre. I think having the people around you and standing up and clapping after the movie is what makes it so special. Sure you can sit in your room and binge watch a movie series, but going to a regular movie theatre is a different experience. Movies first come out in the theatres, so it is a more efficient way to watch movies if you want to be the first of many to watch them.
Kira Douglas (J.R. Masterman)
My mom told me that when she was younger she often watched movies on a VCR, through television, or went to drive through movies, since tv quality wasn’t as good as it is now. My older siblings watched movies on tv or through a DVD player. They rarely went to the movie theatres because it was much more convenient for them to just buy the DVD and be able to watch the movie as much as they pleased. Because my siblings have so many DVDs, when I was younger I often just watched the “classics” they had from when they were kids, like Toy Story and many other children’s movies, which I didn’t mind because the movies were no longer in theatres.
Taryn Connolly (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I watch a movie maybe once a week usually on the weekends with friends, family or even by myself sometimes. I love to watch a movie in the comfort of my own home where I can wear pj’s and wrap up in blankets on my couch or in my bed. Though every once in a while when a new movie has come out I like to dress up or totally dress down and go out with my friends to eat dinner and catch a movie. If i am going to the movies I would prefer to see an action movie on the big screen with the loud sound system, to where the whole theater shakes when something explodes. Though when at home I will watch movies off of one of our streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney Plus. And depending on if I want to lay in bed or be on the couch and who is using the tv in the living room I will stream something either off of my tv or iPad. In my opinion I believe that the best way to watch a movie is in your own home. I say this because you don’t have to worry about getting there on time or waiting forever for the previews to start Though at my house I still have to worry about getting a good seat it’s a race to see who can get what spot on the couch or chair and sometimes you even get kicked out of your spot if you get up to get a snack or drink. All in all, I do believe that movie theaters are still relevant. They give a way for people and friends to get together and enjoy each other's company and the film they are watching.
Mairead Benson (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
@Taryn Connolly, I totally agree with you! I most of the time do prefer to stay at home to watch - or rewatch - a movie, but sometimes it is one of the best feelings to go out with your friends to see a movie you have all been dying to see and to make memories that you will keep with you forever.
Conner Kelley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I would want to visit one of the theaters that were in the article because of the big screen and the sound. the New Beverly Cinema is different to the theaters i am used to, the ones I usually go to are newer feeling and they have recliner seats. I think Mr. Perlin is right about movie theaters having a better experience than just watching it on tv. When my grandparents told me about how they went to the movies they said how they were always excited to go.
Joe Keller (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
As someone born during the technological revolution of home video and streaming services, movie theaters still feel me with this odd sense of vintage-ness and culture. Mr. Perlin hit the nail on the coffin by saying that movie theaters just offer a more exciting and better experience overall than just lounging in front of a TV. It’s not just the sound system, the smell of popcorn, or the screen being the my self-doubts, it’s the combination of all these factors that create a unforgettable 𝒶𝑒𝓈𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓉𝒾𝒸. It was a place my folks went to when they had nothing better to do, but has become a sort of event for a lot of people. Theaters ain’t dying anytime soon.
Ashlyn G. (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
Movie theaters have been a major attraction for American citizens since the first black and white film was shown on the big screen. Today, there is an ongoing debate about whether or not movie theaters are still relevant among the Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, or other streaming devices available on computers, televisions, tablets, and phones. The relevance of movie theaters is declining and the traditional movie theater experience will serve no purpose in the future. Among the benefits people still find at theaters like nostalgia, experience, or surround sound for an “escape” is destined to be seen as illogical when considering other streaming resources. Teenagers have even discovered alternate ways to stream illegally without paying a monthly subscription and having access to all movies, shows, and videos at their leisure without cost, whether it’s a $7 movie ticket or a subscription. The convenience and comfort of being at home is also more greatly valued by America in modern society. Furthermore, families are now getting surround sound systems and theaters put in their own homes to avoid the cost and hassle of going to a theater. At home, individuals can enjoy their own food and setup to watch any movie of their choice whether it be a recent film or a nostalgic one. Therefore, movie theaters do not serve the same purpose they used to due to new technology and giving up movie theaters for personal leisure is valuable to society.
Taryn Connolly (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ashlyn G. I agree with you, movie theaters are not serving the same purpose as they used to and they aren't as cool as they used to be either. And your right Americans are more comfortable in their own home because of all the additions they have made to their living room or even movie room with surround sound and having an array of snacks and drinks set up right there with them, that way they don’t have to miss a second of their film. And it is crazy how we have developed ways to pirate movies and shows off of websites for free, though there are some “consequences” to doing that you have to be careful not to download a virus on to your phone, laptop, or iPad.
Izel (J.R. Masterman)
Older people have told me that going to movies was a big occasion, especially my grandma who says that going to watch a movie would be something she enjoyed with her family all of the time. She also said that it was cheaper than now but still worth quite a couple bucks to get in. What appeals to me is the experience of going to the movies with friends and family, being able to enjoy it all together. I still go to the movies with friends and family, I still think its worth it to attend a movie in 2020.
Carter Osborn (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
If anything, my cousin has revitalized my love for movies. He is a college student, but he runs a social media account that critiques old, and new movies, as well as following what is going on in the cinematic landscape outside of the theaters. His reviews inspire me to go watch more movies, and to see if I agree or disagree with his ratings. It brings me closer to him since he is at the University of Delaware, and it has driven me to the cinemas more as well. I do like the experience of sitting down and watching a movie on the big screen, but I prefer the topics of discussion that my cousin and I will have after the movies even more. When I am older, I hope to visit the New Beverly Cinema as well as the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. I love Quentin Tarantino films, so getting the chance to go to something he owns and watch his films fascinates me, and the Chinese Theatre explains itself. It is an icon in cinematic history. Cinema runs deep in my family, and it is something we are very passionate about. I hope the coming generations can shift from digital streaming and move back into the velvet seats.
Priya Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Watching a movie at a movie theater just has a different feeling, that you could never possibly get from just watching at your house. Certain genre films, such as, horror or action should be watched at a movie theater. You can feel the sound of the bullets or the vibration of the footsteps. Would you ever want to watch Avengers: Endgame for the first time at home? Going to a movie theater can also have other experiences other than just watching the movie. Most times I go to the movie theater with my friends or with my family. Rather than just buying the movie at home, buying the tickets and picking the seats in the dimly lit room is an experience. Personally at home, I know I will get bored watching the movie on my couch. I know that I would pick up my phone and scroll through Instagram rather than paying attention. Waiting in line for the tickets and entering a packed movie theater, you just know that you will experience something that will either raise the hairs on your arms or just impact you in such a way. Jake Perilin said, “A generation of people who have only seen movies at home now want to see them. They’re realizing that nothing is greater than watching something like ‘Bells Are Ringing’ with another couple hundred people.” And I couldn’t agree with that more. It’s different knowing that you are experiencing the same emotions as people around. And that’s the beauty of being in a movie theater.
Ayona Kuriakose (J. R. Masteran)
The thing is that if you want to watch a movie that has just come out, then the only place you’d be able to see it is in a movie theater. If not a newly released movie, then I would watch it at home. Over winter break my dad got us Disney and Hulu and we already had Netflix. With all those platforms, I could watch many of the movies I wanted to watch. Over the past weekend, I watched the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. And I think it’s just easier to watch a movie at home. You could just microwave popcorn and sit on the couch in your pj’s. That sounds way better than getting changed and driving to a movie theater. The movie theater I go to is a half-hour drive from my house. My cousin has a movie theater room so when I go to their house my little cousins and I go and watch a movie there. But I have to admit the experience of watching a movie in your home and in a theater is very different. You cannot get the same feeling if you are at home. But I feel that it’s easier and more efficient to watch movies at your house.
Jason Zhang (Masterman)
I think it's better to watch movies in the theater. Watching movies in the theater is just so classic and fun, when you step into the dark theater and run your hands along the velvet seats, time just seems to melt away and you can feel the history of generations of people coming to theaters. Watching movies at home has its benefits, you can be as loud as you want, you can pause the movie to go to the bathroom, and the food is way, way cheaper, but these things I feel sort of take away from the movie. Something that almost every movie does is to try and evoke some sort of emotion inside the people who watch it, and I feel like in a dark, quiet theater, is the best way to bring that out. Watching movies in a theater highlights the movie and makes really you feel and think, an experience that can’t really be replicated at home.
Brent Torres (Mita Cost High)
My old folks always talk about drive-in theaters. I wonder how they didn't get cold. Brrr. The seemed to be very cool and I enjoyed hearing that story they told me.
Rachel B (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
Overtime, as technology advances and digital streaming has come into play, people have begun to debate the relevance of movie theaters. Movie theaters are still very important due to the unique and vintage experience they provide and the how they are more able to effectively connect the viewers to the movie. Alison Martino views movie theaters as “the closest thing to a time machine,” in an attempt to explain the rare experience one can get from watching a movie in theaters. While some people believe that movie theaters will become unimportant with the availability of digital streaming due to how easily-accessible and efficient it is, they overlook the nostalgic experience one can get from watching the same movie in theaters. In the same way, Brian Raftery describes how “the audience gasped, laughed, and applauded as they followed the tale,” to emphasize how much more impactful seeing a movie on the big screen is. When people actually go to the movie theater, they feel more involved in the movie and encompassed in the story. With hardly any distractions, surround sound, and a large screen, going to the theaters instead of watching the same movie digitally is more impactful and, ultimately, more fun. Therefore, movie theaters will continue to stay relevant in the future, even as time and technology advance.

The movie is better
Hannah Brensinger (Johnstown, PA)
It's worth it. Being able to go out with your friends somewhere to watch a movie is fun. You're not at home with parent supervision with an 80" television. You might still have your parents there but you're with a very big screen having snacks and fun, OUT of the house. There aren't many places to go that's fun with friends where I live.. so the movie theater is a lot of fun. Being scared, clinging on to your friends in the dark with a big screen playing a scary movie might be terrifying but fun. As twisted and as complicating as it sounds.. it's fun. I know I keep saying fun also but to be honest that's the best word to describe it. Hulu, Disney+, Netflix, etc are very good sites and apps but going out of the house with a big screen, in the dark, with buttery buttery popcorn, and friends is better. No one can change my mind about that either.

i like the movic in the therders becus it is a biger screen and i like tv becuse you can whach netfix disny plus and hulu
Nate (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Netflix, Hulu, on demand, Disney plus, Apple TV, YouTube— all of these things are access to movies and shows without leaving your bed. With the increase of streaming sources many people find little reason to go to a movie theater to watch something they can watch at home. However, the movie theater does provide some qualities I think we often forget about. For example, the movie theater provides a huge television and great sound system rather than at home when your kids are screaming for breakfast and you have to pause it for the sixteenth time. All of these great qualities make it more of a reason to go see a movie especially right when it comes out. I think movie theaters personally are also doing a great job in making the experience more memorable. Theaters Now have comfortable and relaxing recline chairs, some serve food with a waiter, while others have 3D and tv screens that cover every wall.
Chaney Anderson (Lubbock, Texas)
To me, movies are one of the best forms of entertainment. They can cater to any age group and provide everyone watching with a feeling as if they are right there with the actors. Personally, I feel like movie theaters are still very relevant. New movies come out and have the craziest trailers and best commercials that it makes me feel like I have to see it right now, instead of waiting for it to come out in a few months on a streaming service. Going to the actual theater instead of just staying home has many perks. There are less distractions, you can’t be on your phone, you can get good snacks, and so much more! Actually going there gives you a feeling like you’re doing something as well, even though you’re just watching a movie. It’s a whole experience I think. Theaters are most definitely still relevant to today's day and age.
Ridah Shaikh (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I can’t even remember the last time I saw a movie in theaters. To me, movie theaters are a bit inconvenient. There are only certain movies playing at certain times in certain locations. Once the movie begins, you are advised to stay silent. I think that is kind of difficult; I prefer to make comments while watching movies, which is not a great combination with movie theaters. Also, I find it hard to sit still in my seat for the entire duration of the movie. Sure, I could take a break, maybe walk around for a bit outside, but then I would be missing part of the movie. When you stream movies online, you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. You can pause the movie to take a break, make as many comments as you want, and even adjust the settings of the device you are watching on to suit your preferences. Despite all of this, movie theaters still hold a certain charm. As mentioned by Mr. Perlin, you get the full experience: the strong smell of buttery popcorn, the casual sound of a baby crying, the darkness of the theater illuminated by a few dim lamps. While movie theaters are not my go-to for watching movies, I do enjoy going there once in a while.
Ned Egan (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Movie theaters, to me, are by far the best way to watch movies. Sitting in the dark room, free from all distractions (except the occasional noisy child), and getting to see a movie, likely for the first time, on the biggest screen you’ll probably ever see it on, tops any other way to watch it. Phones, iPads, laptops, living room TVs, nothing even comes close to the magic that one experiences at the movie theater. If there is new-release movie that I am even remotely interested in, I will see it in the theater, and if I don’t, I am not likely to ever watch it, because I will have missed the greatest viewing opportunity possible. The one advantage that streaming services have is the option to watch older movies, that have long since left the theaters. Occasionally, theaters will do a single showing of a classic movie (I got to see Mad Max 2 at a nearby theater, about a year ago), and certain theaters are even designated for showings of older movies, but overall, these are undoubtedly more rare than showings of new-release movies. There are many movies I wish I could’ve experienced for the first time in theaters— Psycho, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Halloween, The Evil Dead, etc.— and although theaters often restrict their showings to new-release movies only, there has never been, and likely never will be a better way to experience movies.
Camden Peterson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ned Egan I agree, watching a movie in a theater is a whole different experience. The popcorn and and the dark room with a huge screen make the movie so much more enjoyable. If people would rather watch movies on a regular TV than why do people have home theaters?
Tommy J (Saco)
I believe that movie theaters provide people with an experience unlike streaming services. Personally, I get excited when I am going to the movies. When I watch something on Netflix or Hulu, it may not be the newest movie, or it's something I've seen before. The theaters always have the newest movies that streaming services don't always provide. Also, although it may be pricey, the convenience of having snacks and drinks a walk and skip away is always nice. Movie theaters also provide people with a place to go to hang out or pass time with frienthe specialness of theaters. You can always text some friends and meet them at the movies, and think that adds to the specialness of theaters.
Aidan Murphy (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Personally, I love going to the movie theater, and I would say on average my family goes about once a month. Unlike streaming movies, it provides an experience with state of the art speakers and graphics. Theaters nowadays let you enjoy food and order right from the reclining chair, and buying the seats you want is easier than ever with the click of a few buttons. Movie theaters have evolved to better suit our wants through providing us with a two in one experience, like being at a restaurant while sitting at a movie. With the click of a button at your seat someone is there, ready to take your order. I think to get the full effect, and greatness of a movie you have to see it in the theater due to the fine details in sound and picture you may miss watching it on a small phone screen. Audience interaction is also a big part of the experience, whether everyone’s laughing or crying, it just adds to the emotion of the movie.
Carolyne A (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Coming from a family of artistic film lovers I’ve grown up going to the theatre and every time it provides the same exciting experience. Movies are works of art; think of instead of going to the art institute looking up a painting on your phone to observe, not the same effect is it. I’m not saying you can’t appreciate a movie without seeing it in the theatre, but it does allow for you to catch so many more details and very important under,Hong themes with the big screen experience. Movies are a major part of my life and frequently bring my family together and I think the best way for them to be seen as art is in the cinema experience.
Dylan Cafferty (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I personally watch more movies at home by streaming through my tv or phone. I believe that it is easier then going to the movies every weekend when their are only a few movies showing at a time. Despite all this I can’t deny the social aspect of going to the movies with your friends and actually enjoying a new movie. I also cannot deny that I have seen very few bad movies In theaters which may be due to me and my friends being selective when spending money to go out and see a movie verses throwing on a random movie on Netflix that has a 50% chance of being terrible. I myself have fond memories of going to the movies with my parents as a child and seeing random movies like cars and pirates of the Caribbean.
Brennan Cairns (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I love movies, but I don’t know how I feel about streaming movies. The access to movies is incredible; they come from all over the world, the different genres, Indie and mainstream, old and new. The ability to have endless numbers of movies at our fingertips fosters the love for cinema in many people, but it takes away from a real movie experience. I find myself getting distracted when I’m watching at home, whether I’m watching a movie while eating lunch or doing my laundry, your focus isn’t always set on the film. Going to a theatre and seeing it without worrying about anything else in the world is important to the experience of a movie. Also, movies should be a communal experience. To see a comedy and feel joy and laughter, to connect with everyone in the audience is special. To cry and mourn along with others creates a bond between everyone there and in the movie. Seeing a movie the right way in a theatre allows us to be more invested and connect more with characters and those around us.
Sam McNamara (John T. Hoggard High (Wilmington, NC))
@Brennan Cairns I think it’s interesting how you feel as though movies are a communal experience. In my visits to the movie theater, I have always felt like I should minimize my presence so that no one else will be distracted by me during the movie. Now, I understand there is a very clear line between being an obnoxious viewer and simply sharing the emotion of a movie with the others in the same room as you, but it has always been my understanding etiquette at the movie theater is to be invisible to the other people around you. Perhaps this mentality is the reason that I don’t have an appreciation for going to the theaters, and the reason that you feel as though going to a movie theater is an irreplaceable experience Despite my dislike for current movie theaters, if I had the opportunity to visit one of these retro theaters like New Beverly Cinema, I would jump at the opportunity. I view the 60s and the 70s as the peak of the movie theater industry, where everyone was hitting the movie theaters on Friday night and all of the talk was about the next big movie coming out. The style of these movie theaters, combined with the classic films they show, would create a very memorable atmosphere. Although today’s movie theaters have grown boring to me over the years, I think I would find a visit to the New Beverly Theater, or something like it to, to be something I would remember for a long time.
Izzy Williams (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Going to a movie theater will always be a timeless and classic activity that I, along with many others, enjoy doing. I tend to go to the movies a lot with my friends on rainy weekends or with my family on holidays. Movie theaters provide a difference experience rather than just watching a movie on your phone or iPad. To me, movie theaters are like hideouts. Movie theaters provide a feeling that you are hiding away from the rest of the world and for those two hours inside the dark and cold room, you can forget about what’s going on outside those doors and focus on the alternate reality on the screen. Whereas when you’re just watching a movie on Netflix or Disney plus, you can still hear the background noises of your own reality and you can’t fully focus on what you’re watching. Going to the movies is something everyone can enjoy, whether it’d be at an actual theater or a drive in movie theater, and a place where everyone can go and relax and forget about the stress of their daily life.
Conner Kelley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Izzy Williams I agree that going to the movies will always be a timeless classic.
Kaylee W. (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I do not believe that movie theaters are worth it at all. While they do provide a better watching experience than streaming services, I don’t think that they are worth the money. The average price of a movie ticket is around 9 dollars and one month of Netflix is also 9 dollars. I can not justify spending 9 dollars for a 1-2 hour film that I may not even enjoy, when I could spend that 9 dollars on a streaming service that would give me endless hours of entertainment. Even if I weren’t to enjoy the movie or show I was watching I could just exit and watch a different one, unlike in the movie theaters, if you don’t like the film that money is wasted. These days I only go to the theaters if my friends are going—which is not often—or if the movie is part of a series and I know I’ll like it. Movie theaters are no longer worth the money, and while it is sad because they were such a staple in the American lifestyle. I don’t believe that anyone is going to complain as long as we still have streaming services.
Bennett C. (Glenbard West)
Movie theaters are absolutely still relevant in this day and age. The atmosphere of a movie theater is great, and are unrivaled by a basement with a flatscreen TV. The popcorn at home never seems to be on par with the popcorn at movie theaters, and the popcorn at home’s only advantage is that it may be cheaper. Movie theater experiences are great, as you can join up with friends, or maybe even strangers if it’s a big premiere. Movie theaters also can provide 3D glasses that make the movies pop out, not something you can get easily at home of course. While the convenience of smartphones and digital streaming make watching movies and TV shows incredibly easy, watching a movie on the big screen with some popcorn and friends is an experience which no one should go without (Unless you are very rich and can purchase a movie theater in your own home, which is still a movie theater!).
Justin Prickett (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Going to a movie theater gives a whole different sense than watching a movie at your home whether it’s on a tv or an iPad. When the hype is building up for a new movie that’s coming out, it makes it a lot more excited going to watch it on a massive screen, volume up loud and some excessively buttered popcorn. Mr. Perlin is correct in his view, it’s a completely different atmosphere that makes people even more excited to see a movie. Park of movie theaters is the expense which can add up from the ticket and food, but other than that a lot of movie theatre have comfy reclining chairs and screens that increasingly get bigger and bigger.
Nuha Hussain (Glenbard West High School)
How many times gave you say down and truly enjoyed the art of a film? Movies today are clouded by the overconsumption of digital media, and movie theater’s are a part of what brings back the authenticity of film. It gives us a chance to take a break from our phones and focus solely on the craft of the film itself. While I must say that I prefer older movies, the advancements we have made in sound and production allow people to be immersed in the world of modern movies the actors and directors create, in a way we can’t sitting at home on our phones.
Zoë Mical (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn IL)
I personally love going to see a movie at the movie theatre. If you had asked me the same question 5 years ago, I would have had a different answer. Growing up, the dark room and the loud noises was a scary experience, so I had grown to just not want to go to see a movie in the theatre. Now, my friends and I have found ourselves going every week to see a movie, regardless of what it is. This digital age of streaming has become so huge, it has taken over cable television, and some also say it had taken over movie theatre's as well. When a movie first comes out, it cannot be found on any streaming platform, so for me personally, I like to see a movie when it first comes out. Going to see a movie is a classic way of having a good time with friends, and I agree with that. Of course streaming platforms are going to become even more relevant, leading maybe to all movies being produced through a specific platform, but as for now I think that movie theaters are a great way of enjoying your time with whoever it may be.
Sarah Hess (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I believe that this question has a simple answer. Of course movie theaters are still relevant. Yes, people do like to hang in their home and watch a movie in their pajamas once in a while, but there are always those certain movies that I tell people “you have to see this in theaters”. Watching a movie in the theaters is an experience, with the loud sound, the screen taking up your whole view, the dark lighting. When I go see a movie in theaters, I pay more attention because it is my main focus, I’m not distracted on my phone, I do not have to keep pausing it to go grab something, it really is a fun time. However, I believe that going to the movies is something that is more fun with another person, or with a group. When people are going on first dates, the most common place I’d like to say is to see a movie. It’s cheap, and for people who may be shy it’s a great place to be because for about 90% of the date you don’t even need to talk to the other person. A movie that I really enjoyed seeing in theaters was “Ford vs Ferrari”. This was a great movie to see in the theaters because of the loud sounds of the race cars. I really enjoyed watching it, much more than I did when I saw it again in my house. To really enjoy a movie, I believe that one needs to be focused, and a movie theater is the best place to make that happen.
Allison Ciero (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Watching movies at a movie theater definitely has its pros. Something that makes movie theaters so appealing is the larger screen, the sound systems, and being able to easily watch the movie with other people. Watching a movie with other people allows you to see how other people are reacting to the movie, if they have a similar reaction or a completely different one. Movie theaters also allow people to escape from the real world and into a new one, and sometimes that is all a person needs for a few hours of their day.
Sydney Melms (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn,IL)
It seems like a strange question if movie theaters are relevant or not, my first thought was well of course they are. Then I took a step back and really thought about the question I began questioning how often do I go to the movies now? When I was younger it just seemed like the thing to do was there a new Disney or Pixar movie? I was probably there, but now with all the networks that a person can stream from their device it looks like there is no need to go to the movies. Although, I still think movie theaters are a great way to spend time with your friends or family and go see the movie on the big screen and not just your phone. I believe there is a greater connection to the movie when you watch it in theaters than sitting on your couch. In all, I think movie theaters don’t have the same relevance but I going to the movies is always a fun time and should be acknowledged more often .
Maddie Beery (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Watching a movie in a movie theater is truly a unique experience that streaming a movie at home cannot provide, from the popcorn, to choosing your seat, to the movie itself. Watching a movie on a big screen with surround sound helps to amplify this experience no matter the type of movie. Watching a new release at a theater is exciting and far more memorable, and going to see a movie with friends is more enjoyable as well. Although watching a movie at home is definitely more convenient and easily accessible in today’s world, if given the choice to go see the same movie in a theater, I would.
Luca (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
The older people in my life speak very highly of the theatre’s. This is so, because movie theaters were an integral part of their lives up until recent years. As children, movie theaters were hangout spots, and my grandparents always tell me stories about the stuff they did there. These stories greatly appeal to me because it illustrates a time in which there was not streaming, and depicts the things kids would do instead of watch Netflix or play video games. These stories make me realize that spending time with friends outside of our households is very valuable to my relationships, and gives kids an outlet of fun activities. Overall, I would definitely recommend going to the movies with friends.
Ariana Lucero (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
If my friends asked to go watch a new movie at the movie theater, I would likely tag along. Mr. Perlin is right in the sense that movie theaters are enjoyable and an easy way to get out of the house. Personally I believe watching a movie at the theater is an enjoyable activity because of the authentic experience of getting popcorn, finding your seat, watching the movie with surround sound. Although being at home is much less of a hassle and obviously more comfortable, I would much rather go to a theater to watch a new movie instead of streaming it at home.
Ella (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn IL)
With Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime and so many more, it’s so easy to steam movies right from your home. But even though you can see pretty much any movie at the touch of your fingers, movie theaters are still relevant due to the whole experience. When there’s nothing to do going to the movies is always a fun option. But now, it cost a lot to just go to one movie, from the ticket to food and drinks, the question arises that is it cheaper to subscribe to a streaming service. You can get a whole month of Netflix for just under $10 where for one movie ticket it’s usually $10. I defiantly have gone to the movies much less then I used to with new streaming services, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that going to the movies will always be a fun experience.
Ryan Boaz (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ella I completely agree with you on this. Streaming services like Netflix have made a lot of people choose to stay home instead of having to go out to the movies. Before you mentioned it, I didn't even realize the fact that one movie costs an entire month of Netflix. It makes no sense to spend that kind of money, especially when you know that same movie will be available to stream in just a few months. Even though it costs an absurd amount of money to watch a movie at the theater, they still have a strong foothold in the movie industry and they actively compete with those streaming services. And it all has to do with the experience. You don't get the comfy seats, the hot, buttery popcorn and, most importantly, the nostalgia in your home. The amenities of a movie theater is what makes them still relevant, and as long as people aren’t willing to give up that experience, I don’t see streaming completely dominating the game.
Luke Kaslewicz (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
Although movies are a struggle to get to, and having to buy a ticket and organize a day to get to the movie I feel like it’s still worth it. Movie theaters, although at many times are extra, and a little over the top, still makes watching a movie with friends the most enjoyable, and watching a new movie should only be viewed on the big screen. When they say that the movie theaters are as close as we can get to a time machine I completely agree with this . The fact that we all are obsessed with our little phone screens and walk around with our heads down all the time it’s nice to get a break from it all and watch a movie in a theater.
Adam Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I would only go to the movie theatre if I’m forced to go or if I have nothing better to do and the opportunity to go is open. I think movie theatres are surprisingly relevant still. Yes, you can go with friends and also with a bunch of strangers. I think it's better just to watch it at home. You can be as loud as you want and you can pause the movie anytime and it costs way less. Besides we have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and even Disney Plus now that we can binge-watch all day long if we want, in the comfort of our own home. But I guess there are a few bad things about watching it at home like pausing for people to get drinks and to go to the bathroom. It gets old real quick. Now I don’t go to the movie theatres every once in a blue moon. I go to drive-in movie theatres often in the summers. It's like a tradition with my family to at least go once a year. But I still would rather be in the comfort of my home with a remote to pause the show if I get tired.
Daren L. (J.R. Masterman)
I only go to the movies when my mom feels like it or there is a movie that we really want to see. I don't really like the movies that much because the prices of the tickets are ridiculously high and the food in the concession line. You could go to the corner store and get all of the things you want to eat for a much lower price than in the movies. Also, you have to leave the comfort of your home and go somewhere where some kid behind you could be kicking the back of your chair or the lady sitting next to you is watching YouTube and is dying of laughter and you don't want to talk to her. If you are at home then your parents can just tell your older or younger sibling to stop. In your household you have more control over what happens. If you need to go to the bathroom you can pause the movie. If you need to get more popcorn you can pause it. If your baby brother pees on himself, you can pause it and change his diaper. Also, you can turn the volume up and down as you please. My mom and dad told me that when they were little they had Blockbuster and they could only rent movies on a VHS if they wanted to watch a movie at home.
Skye Solomon (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Daren L. You are correct that you could just watch a movie at home for a much easier and cheaper experience. But, that’s not the point of going to the movies. Going to the theater isn’t something you do for every single movie you want to watch, but the special ones. You don’t go for the convenience, you go to watch a movie in special ways that are not available at home. You can’t watch an IMAX movie from your couch, or watch the images pop out at you with 3D or even 4D. You can pause the movie and adjust the volume as you please, but isn’t it better to watch the whole thing uninterrupted? Sure, other people in theaters can be annoying, but generally the experience isn’t as bad as you described and can even be pleasant if you go with friends or family.
Katherine Lennon (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
I think people genuinely enjoy going to the movies.I’ve always been one to be planning to go watch all the newest movies as soon as they hit the theaters. The best part is getting to go opening night to see a major film come out. That’s the whole point I think. Waiting all night for tickets to come on sale and getting the best seats. Sure, you could stay at home and wait for the movie you want to come out on dvd or some streaming network but then my least favorite part is you risk the possibility of getting spoiled before you have a shot to see it. I remember what it was like as a kid when I would full out sprint back to the TV because I didn’t want to miss the show after a commercial would end. Of course streaming services are quick and easy, and that’s what society goes for. People are ready to replace what can be an amazing experience for just a lazy at home movie. Plus, the movies are a great place to plan a hang out with friends and grab some food before or after. I believe the experience is what makes the movies worth it.
Visha Patel (Upper Merion High School)
I love going to the moves, it brings back a lot of great memories. Also watching movies on a laptop or a phone is not the same as watching them in the theater. It allows you to get the first show experience and that has its own beauty to it.
Evelyn (Glenbard West HS)
@Visha Patel I completely agree! Watching movies in theaters, right when they come out is always a little more memorable and worth it than watching movies at your own house. Although theaters are more expensive, the fun of sitting in a big comfy chair and watching a movie on a giant screen with your friends is more exciting.
Allison Coble (Hoggard High School)
Going to the movie theaters is a very important aspect of life. It is a place for family, friends, and memories. Before there was television and phones people used to go to a local cinema and watch local news and other such things. It was a social place where friends and family could get info in and around town. It would be devastating if in the future there is a generation of children who have never heard of a movie theater. Will never experience the feeling of the big screen with the loud sounds and lights. Or will never have the chance to buy overpriced candy or smell the fresh popcorn popping. Sort of like how our generation doesn't know what pagers, cassette tapes, answering machines, and floppy disks are.
Emma Dunne (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
If you asked me if I liked going to the movies better or staying home, I wouldn't have given a definite answer. I would have said both and listed the reasons I like both. After reading this article it made me think about a few years ago when a group of my friends and I would go to the movie theaters. It also made me think about the times before my generation when watching movies on a computer or phone wasn't a thing. I would love to go to the New Beverly Cinema and get a feel for the 1960's life in movies and also to see the difference in the life people around my age lived during that time. Yes, I obviously do stream movies on my computer and phone but I don't think it gives the full effect that a movie theater big screen does. The big screen, pop corn, and the funny feelings a movie theater brings can not always be matched by a computer screen.
Elliot Wells (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I love the idea of being able to experience movies in a vintage movie theater. They look so exciting, and seeing a movie on the big screen at all can be exciting, like when I went to see Avengers: Endgame and the entire movie theater cheered when anything happened. It was a unifying experience and hearing everyone else get excited over the things I did made me even more excited. Unfortunately, when given the chance, I’m loathe to go out to see a movie. When I could just stay in my house and wait for a movie to come to Netflix instead of going out and having to deal with other people during my movie experience, I’ll always choose to stay in. It’s a hassle to get out the door and drive to the theater. The only time I go to the movie theater now is if there’s a movie I really want to see, someone invites me, or I’ve been promised food. In this day and age, with all the technological advancements, we don’t often need to leave our houses for anything. We can work from home, pay someone to do our errands, work out, and, really, we can do anything we want at our houses as long as we don’t need excitement or mind monotony. Since it’s so much easier to wait rather than subject ourselves to the ordeal of social interaction, more and more people are choosing to stay inside rather than see movies in a theater. No matter how exciting it is to go to a vintage movie theater, the novelty will wear off and eventually they’ll be treated the same as regular theaters.
Sofia Noonan (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I love going to the theater. Although I usually watch movies at home through streaming services, I think I will always love going to the movie theater. There’s just something about the nostalgia of watching a new movie on a huge screen, surrounded by sound. I feel as though it’s just part of classic America to go to the theater to watch a brand new movie that just came out and get some buttered popcorn to share with your friends. I can’t explain it but the movie experience just isn’t the same at home. Although I would rather watch a movie at the theater, I almost never do. It’s always easier to wait for a movie to come out of theaters and onto streaming services to watch at home. I’ll admit, it can be more comfortable and easy to watch a movie at home, but it’s not the whole experience of seeing a movie for the first time. You don’t get to see everyone else’s excitement to watch the new film, you don’t get to feel the movie as the sound in the theater just surrounds everything, and my favorite part about the theater, you don’t get to enjoy some classic buttered popcorn and candies. I think going to the theater is a traditional thing, and as time goes on I hope we will be able to keep up with classic cinema.

As a kid, I frequently went to my local theatre in Mayfaire with my friends and family. When we went to the movies, it wasn't all about just seeing the film as soon as possible, but the experience that came with it. Even though while sitting in a theatre you don't have any contact with your friends and family, or even see anything different from when watching it at home, the small things like talking about it before and after, eating the popcorn and other snacks, and watching it on the big screen draw me to enjoy the theatre. Now, I go to the theatre maybe twice a year depending on what's playing. Nostalgia is a good way of putting how I feel about going to the movies now. Even though the theatre I went to has changed, when I go to the movies I can't help but remember all the good times when I was younger. Because I have stopped going to the theatre, I now stream almost all of the movies and shows I watch. While I don't believe the experience is as fun, I think it is much more easy and affordable to watch them at home. Netflix and other streaming services now dominate the movie industry. They have dominated their competition like Blockbuster and Redbox, and the theatre's are the next thing on their list. However, the movie theatre industry has one thing that the streaming services don't, the experience. I don't think the experience of going to the movies will ever go away, and because of this theaters will be able to stay alive, but will lose a lot of business.

I still enjoy going to the movies. I like being able to go somewhere with my friends and have a good time. Also, would you rather wait to see a movie when it comes out to buy and risk seeing spoilers, or go see the movie right when it comes out? Movie theatres are still relevant and I don’t think they’re going to be gone anytime soon. I like sitting down in a reclining seat, not knowing what’s going to happen in a movie with nothing big predictions of my own. If i waited for a movie like Endgame to come out to buy so I could see it at home, I would have already seen a thousand spoilers, and it would have ruined the movie for me. That’s why we still need movie theatres. Also, some people maybe don’t have proper access to seeing movies at home so a theatre is convenient for them. I will always go to the movies and I won’t ever stop.
Allison Coble (Hoggard High School)
@Gianna Sticco I agree. Going to the movies is such a great experience, enjoying a movie for the first time with friends and families. A couple of years ago a Star Wars movie came out and I didn't get a chance to see it in the movie theater, so I waited until it came out. The first day it streamed someone had already ruined it for me. Without access to the theater it would be devastating, movie theaters just makes the overall experience better.

If you were to ask me 5 years ago whether I prefer going to movie theaters or staying home and watching a movie I probably would have said I enjoyed going to the movies much more. While I still do agree with that, I have recently found more and more interest in watching movies at home. Movie theaters I think are great for when you want to see a new release with friends and just have a great time. The sizable difference I would say when it comes to watching a movie at a movie theater as to at home is the experience outside of the show. This includes eating popcorn, and candy, along with having a fun time with friends and family, also all you have to do at a movie theater is pay and pretty much everything else is done for you. The times I do prefer staying at home and watching a movie are when I am tired and just want to find a way to relax and settle down, and I feel like going to a movie theater does not come with the same sensation. For me at least, movie theaters no with little doubt should continue to be successful because they have their own time in which they might be useful, and they are in a completely different industry or lane than watching Netflix or Hulu at home.

I think Mr. Perlin is exactly right. I find it so much more fun to go out, with friends, and see a movie, than to stay in. I find that when going to a theater the sense of a connection you have with the other people in the theater, and the way the movie looks on the screen, and the way it sounds through the speakers is so different from streaming, and so much better.

I think in this day and age, seeing a movie in a theatre is becoming more obsolete than it was 50 years ago, but that's not to say it's anywhere close to completely becoming irrelevant. Being a massive Star Wars fan, I can’t wait for The Rise Of Skywalker to be put on Disney+, it’s a tradition in my family to see a Star Wars movie on or around Christmas Day. I feel like unless a movie was immediately put on a streaming service, then theatres would become obsolete, but since people have to wait so long for the movie to be put somewhere and people are impatient, he'd rather spend some money and watch the movie in theatres. I feel the one place a streaming service outclasses everything else is shows. Netflix and Disney+ rake in unbelievable amounts of money from people paying for a subscription to watch an original like The Mandalorian or Stranger Things. If movie theatres played shows, which is a dumb idea because it defeats the purpose of a theatre, Theatres would probably be just as popular as streaming services.
Sophie (J.R Masterman)
I would rather watch a movie or show at my house than in a movie theater. That is not to say movie theaters aren’t fun. I love going to movie theaters and sitting in the reclining seats with all kinds of snacks and watching a thrilling movie. But if it was up to me, I would stay home. I am more of an introvert and find things more fun when there aren’t a lot of people around me. At my house, I can sit wherever I want, I can eat whatever I want, and I can pause the movie whenever I want. I have more freedom watching a movie at my house than at a movie theater. Adding on to that it's very expensive to watch movies at a movie theater. Renting or buying a movie online costs a lot less money.
William Hudson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Sophie Relevant and practical are two very different things. Going to the movie theater to see every movie is simply unrealistic. Watching a movie in your home is more relaxed and affordable. But that is not to say going to the movie theater has lost its appeal even for me - an avid watcher of paid subscription services like Netflix. In the movie theater, it feels as if you are right there with the characters - almost as if you have entered their realm. The movie theater also allows you to immerse yourself in front of a big screen in a darkened hushed theater with surround sound and no distractions. Additionally, with advancements in technology, the theater experience is becoming more realistic with 3D and 4D options. Going to the theater provides a fun experience with friends. Today you can even reserve reclining seats to enjoy the show over a bucket of buttery popcorn. Finally, theater ticket sales support great films and artists and allow fans to see movies before they are available for streaming. People who go to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will find out what happens long before those who wait to see it on their living room couch.

I think that it’s fine to watch movies in a theater if you want, and I usually like a combination of watching movies at home and in the theater. I like both because when you’re at home, you don’t have to spend money to buy a movie ticket, and you have to buy a ticket in the theater. But I also think that going to a movie theater can be a good experience sometimes, too. In a movie theater, I feel like the experience is different, and since the screen is bigger, I think it can affect how you see the movie, in a way. I feel like if the screen is bigger, you see more details of the movie, compared to a smaller screen at home. I think that watching in a theater and at home both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Even though I like a combination of both, if I had to pick one, I’d probably choose to watch at home because it’s free, and also, you can pause the movie if you want. That’s another big advantage of watching at home, you can pause it as needed, but obviously, in a movie theater, it doesn’t work that way. If you can pause it, you’re not missing a lot of the movie, whereas if you pause it, you might miss a lot. Also, you can watch the movie so many times for free, but in a theater, if you keep on watching movies there, after a while, the money does add up, whereas at home, you can keep watching it as many times as you want and never have to pay for it. So, if I had to pick one, I would probably watch a movie at home, although I enjoy a combination of both.

I would say the movie that holds my personal record of most views has to be Fast and Furious 7. This movie was so high octane and filled me up with so much adrenaline almost every scene. This movie was so action-packed that it would be crazy not to watch the whole thing. The scenes are so well done and are so cool to me and I’m sure, many others. The directing was phenomenal and the cast had me in awe. The unexpected moments were the best. I only saw it once in the theater, but maybe another 14 times on some streaming services. I watched it on some streaming services that allowed me to watch for free. Fast 7 is my favorite movie and will always be. Rest in peace Paul Walker.
Maya Dixon (J.R. Masterman)
Movie theatres I feel like can have both good and bad scenarios on why it is useful to go. For one, movie theatres turn the volume up so high, and have such a big screen just blaring in front of you. One day this could turn into being deaf, or you could have bad hearing. Bad hearing isn;t good both for you and for other people. It can show rudeness and can show you don’t really care about what someone is saying. Not being able to hear well can also impact the way you take in the things that people can tell you, and if you’re bad at this, you may miss key information in life. Another way movie theatres can impact a person's life is through their eyes. From having a screen blaring at you for a whole two hours often, can affect someone's ability to have 20/20 vision. Even glasses might not help in a scenario where you could go blind. It's just not worth it going through that from a movie theatre. Seeing a movie at the movie theatre is a great experience all in all, but I feel like it would just be worth it to wait a couple months until you can rent it on your TV. For one, it doesn’t cost all that much compared to what you pay at the movie theatre, and you can eat your own snacks no prob-also for less cause. I know movie theatres make a fun experience on a rainy day, and the popcorn is just so delish, but people might want to take into consideration what effects these things could have on our daily lives.
Mia Moss (J.R Masterman)
I think even though movie theaters are overpriced, and crowded, and sometimes an inconvenience, the experience is sometimes worth it. Of course it might be easier to watch movies on netflix or hulu, or just watch videos on youtube. But the movie theater is supposed to have an ideal experience. First off, the screen is massive in a pitch black room. And depending on what theater you go to, they have reclining chairs. Also snacks are easily accessible even if they’re overpriced. Overall, even though technology will continue to advance, I don't think going to the movies will ever be lost.
Katherine Lennon (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
@Mia Moss I agree that the experience is what makes the movies special. Even though it is more convenient to stay at home and save a few dollars on a ticket, to use some streaming sites, you still can have to pay for things like premium. When you are at the movies it’s supposed to be the ideal place to watch. Yes, things like the seats and big screen are there to make you feel more comfortable. I get that to some people nothing is more comfortable than watching netflix in blankets at their home but I believe the movies is the best way to go.
Charlie Knoblock (J.R Masterman)
I think watching a movie in a theater is a completely different experience than watching a movie at your house. They can’t really be compared because they are very different and each bring opposite pros and cons. The movie I have seen the most is probably Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. I have watched it multiple times at a theater and even once on a giant screen at a park. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse has good animation, a good storyline, and is at least moderately funny (without the occasional corny joke).
Jillian Steeves (Danvers, MA)
I love going to the movies. Everything about it - the big screen and surround sound, the snacks and buttery popcorn, and being surrounded by friends and fellow movie-goers - is appealing to me. Unfortunately, the movies has become so expensive that it simply isn't worth the money it costs. As much as I would love to take my friends to see a great new blockbuster, it just isn't plausible when a small popcorn and drink costs more than I get paid in an hour. If it were a bit less expensive, I know that I and many of my peers would be rushing out the door to go to the movies because it is not just another location to watch the same film you could watch at home - it is a social experience.
Malak (King of Prussia)
For me, the movie theatre experience is pointless. You're paying an expensive amount for a movie that you could watch later on a streaming service for much cheaper. The movie theatre "experience" quite frankly doesn't exist. It's just a waste of money. The snacks are expensive and there are five minutes worth of commercials before the movie actually starts. It's far better to stream a movie from your house where you can create a more personalized experience for less money.
Shivani Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Malak Part 1 Respectfully, I disagree. Sure, you have to pay. Streaming services cost money too, but you don’t have to pay upfront so it seems as if it’s less. The cost of them adds up too. Movie theaters have cheaper days and passes, and it’s not like it’s an everyday thing. Sure, there’s commercials and you can’t pause it. But, do you remember the early 2000’s? To watch a movie on TV, you had to watch commercials and you couldn’t pause it even though it was at home. It wasn’t much of a problem before, and it isn’t a big one now either. The Super Bowl, for example, is more relevant. It comes with all kinds of ads and you can’t pause that either. Those couple of things don’t really make much of a difference unless you let them. If you imagine the movie theatre as a bad experience, it will be. As said in To Kill a Mockingbird, you often see what you’re looking for.
Shivani Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Malak Part 2 If you find a way to get over it, there’s a lot to get out of movie theaters, and if you take advantage of it, the money is worth it. They capture that moment when you first get to see a movie that you’ve been waiting to watch for what seems like ever. Streaming services take that away. They take the experience of a big screen and loud speakers and popcorn all in the dark away. Honestly, I wouldn’t trade that. Even with shows. I miss the days when I had to run back to the TV because I didn’t want to miss the show after the commercials. Streaming services are quick and easy, and of course that’s what society goes for. People have forgotten what it’s like to wait and work for something, and this is just another one of those things. People are ready to replace what can be an amazing experience for just a lazy at home movie. The thrill isn’t quite the same.
Adam Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Malak, I agree with you I mean sure you can watch a movie on a huge screen with a bunch of strangers. But, I'd rather just watch it at home on my own time. I could see going once in a while for special cases. But, going just because you want to whenever you want to costs a lot of money.
Shiv (King of Prussia, PA)
Movie theaters provide a unique experience, especially to many current generations. However, to me, it is simply not worth the time, money, and effort to travel to a movie theater to view the same movie you can watch at home. Entertainment is not a priority to me, therefore whenever I do watch a movie I try to do it as effectively as possible. It is the job of movie theaters to provide the viewer with the best experience. Movie theaters will have superior sound quality, a bigger screen, and more snacks than a simple home will. However, to what degree does this matter to you? Either you are paying extra money to view a movie in a theater with better services, or you are cheaply streaming a movie at home. From a personal finance perspective, paying to view a movie in a theater each month rather than streaming it can cut a big chunk out of one’s budget. In a world of rising college costs, health care costs, and costs in all… is it better to have the experience of watching a movie in a theater every month, or would you save this money for college?
Mike H (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn)
@Shiv Although I agree with you about the cost impact for attending a movie in a theatre, I find that being in a theatre for a premiere with family or friends is actually more enjoyable than streaming from an at-home device. My Dad and I have always found joy in buying tickets for the newest Star Wars or Creed movies, and I believe theatres possess a memorable type of value. Even if streaming availabilities allow you to view a film with a minimal purchase, the cost of a movie ticket, especially if you do not need to pay for it, would serve as only a small price for a memorable night. Ultimately, if movie theatres were to be removed throughout the nation, I would consider this as a loss for moviegoers and for those who grew up with these places as a kid.
