Chiefs Defeat 49ers in Stunning Super Bowl Comeback

I live about 110 miles from Kansas City in Kansas. I sit in season ticket seats in an account that my father started in 1986. It's good to finally win one! Even out here in the hustings there were fireworks going off all over last night. Hooraay for flyover country!
mijosc (brooklyn)
Williams should have been MVP.
DaffyDave (San Francisco)
Congratulations to the Chiefs! As a 49ers fan, it hurt to lose and left fans and commentators with a lot to chew on regarding Shanahan's poor time management and cautious and in the 4th quarter weird play-calling decisions as well as Garoppolo's limitations on display. The 49ers have a superb running game, but they pretty much went away from it. They have a Gronk-like playmaker in George Kittle, but they never seemed to get the ball to him. But, hopefully they'll all learn from it and make it back to a future Super Bowl. However, as the Chiefs can attest, it can be a long (long) time. The Chiefs totally outplayed the 49ers in crunch time. Mahomes and all the other key players were fantastic and Reid managed the game beautifully. What can you say? A deserved victory and deserved defeat. It was an exciting game though, so the NFL should be proud.
Carl (KS)
Re the Chiefs' Damien Williams's go-ahead (making it 24 to 20), 5-yard pass reception/TD with 2:44 left in the game, is there a definitive still photo of Williams, with his right foot still in bounds, breaking the plane of the goal line with the ball?
Ben (Florida)
The real question is there a definitive still photo which proves that Williams was out of bounds when the ball crossed the plane? Because otherwise the call on the field should stand. You can have a problem with the initial call on the field, but it takes definitive evidence to overturn that call. There’s always an iffy call in every big game, especially if you were rooting for the losing side.
Carl (KS)
@Ben "... when the ball crossed the plane" assumes the ball actually did cross the plane, the when or whether of which really was not clear to me in the moment or from the replays. In other far less important games I've seen on TV, they seem to have a camera lined up on the end zone plane to the point they can slo-mo/stop show the ball being 1/2 inch over the line, and I didn't see the FOX TV people trying to do that at all. I'm happy the Chiefs got the TD and won, and certainly wasn't rooting for SF. To me, it's just more fun when the "TD moment" is clear.
Earl M (New Haven)
For a real football fan, the Super Bowl, with its advertising and half time, is excruciating to sit through. Only in America are people stupid enough to consider advertisements part of the entertainment.
P. Liberti (Naples Fl)
@Earl M I watched the game alone as I always do. Other than the awful halftime fiesco, the adds were less of an interuption than in the regular season as I saw it.
Tim Kane (Mesa, Arizona)
Missouri now has two world championship in major league sports in less than 12 months time. It has its problems but it was a good day for Kansas City and a good day for Missouri.
mja (LA, Calif)
Dang - was that on yesterday?
Mark McIntyre (Los Angeles)
It was an entertaining game and the Niners played well for 2 1/2 quarters. Then their worst fear materialized when Mahomes pulled off his magic act. The 49er defense had a meltdown and it was obvious Richard Sherman is too slow for these young receivers. Hail to the Chiefs!
skyfiber (melbourne, australia)
Kyle Shanahan...why, with a 10 point lead well into the fourth quarter, is Jimmy Garoppolo throwing four straight passes? I love that the Chiefs won, but honestly...
M.W. Endres (St.Louis)
To most American's, this game was more important than anything happening in Iraq, Iran Afghanistan etc. That's why we have Donald Trump as our president. People don't care all that much unless some guy's foot is two inches out of bounds , The bars are filled with fans and there's a good chance that Trump will be reelected. This is America in 2020. We asked for it and it is here.
HapinOregon (Southwest Corner of Oregon)
To borrow from a another champion, "If you can do it, it ain't bragging." Bravo & Kudos...
paul (White Plains, NY)
The 49'ers shot themselves in the foot by becoming too conservative when they went up by 20-10 well into the fourth quarter. They knew about the Chief's history of comebacks, yet they ignored that history and sat on the ball while the Chiefs woke up from their offensive slumber. Shanahan would have been well served to put down his ever present play calling sheet, and to confront his offense and urge them to keep the pedal to the metal.
michjas (Phoenix)
Mahomes had a pedestrian 78.6 quarterback rating. And he threw two terrible interceptions on plays where he wasn't pressured. He didn't live up to expectations and in the critical last minutes he wasn't the key to the Chiefs' victory. There were two game breaking downfield passes in the fourth quarter. One was to Tyreek Hill, whose speed and explosiveness are unmatched in the NFL. On Hill's critical reception, he burnt the Niners' secondary and was as wide open as almost any receiver ever gets. A mediocre college quarterback would have completed the pass. On the other key pass play, to Sammy Watkins, the Niners covered him man to man, and Watkins burnt Richard Sherman badly for reasons I don't understand. But the point is that the Mahomes pass, while well thrown, was pretty routine because Watkins beatSherman. Hill and Watkins accounted for almost all the Chiefs' passing yardage. And they did it with downfield moves that made Mahomes' job easy. Even with one of the best receiving corps in the NFL, if not the best, Mahomes turned in a so-so game. The MVP should have been shared by Hill and Watkins.
Dave (New Jersey)
@michjas The only thing that Hill should share is a prison cell. Hopefully it will happen someday.
sgonk (ny)
This was against a pass defense rated best in a decade by some and at least great by all. Also (excluding kneeldowns) he rushed for 44 yards, 2 first downs, and a touchdown--in 6 carries. Maybe not the best stats ever, but better than mediocre.
LaPine (Pacific Northwest)
I remember watching the Chiefs defeat the Vikings in 1969-70. I was a Vikings fan and very disappointed. The Chiefs certainly deserve the win, a 50 year drought after that last Super Bowl win. Patrick Mahomes is a rare talent, if continued to be surrounded by talent, will be a frequent visitor to the playoffs and perhaps more Super Bowls. He surrenders nothing. He is the complete package. His arm reminds me of Peyton Manning. Go Chiefs.
Bill Dalton (Kansas City)
Ben, I'm not a big sports fan, but yours is the best written game story I've read in years. Nice job.
northlander (michigan)
Not about Brady or Bellichek, new way of getting it done. Greatest Game Ever KC.
Patty Mutkoski (Ithaca, NY)
Hahahaha. Could have used Kaepernick last night.
David Derbes (Chicago)
@Patty Mutkoski Garoppolo is an excellent QB. But one has to wonder how the game would have gone with Kaep in it. I was rooting for KC because it's been 50 years, because of Andy Reid, because of Patrick Mahomes, but most of all because SF agreed to let Kaep go, I believe under pressure from the NFL higher ups.
mark (East coast)
R rated half time.
j24 (CT)
Looking back, I loved the 49ers end zone celebration after the interception that they thought sealed the game!!! What a bunch of clowns. Class, professional and sportsmanship won the day. Thank you KC!
j24 (CT)
Madison Avenue, take notice! A lot of accounts should be in review after a night of mostly, terrible commercials.
D.j.j.k. (south Delaware)
I have better things to do with my time than to watch grown men give themselves severe brain damage CTE’s. I listened to music and helped my brain relax while there fans where drinking alcohol toxic to the brain and body and fattening foods pizzas and whatever. Foot ball is such a violent sport anyone playing it should pay the highest health care premiums ever. I am proud i am not interested in this violent sport. Shame on all you enablers.
Gerry (west of the rockies)
@D.j.j.k. You're so "not interested in this violent sport" that you take the time to write into the NY Times about. That's not exactly "not interested" now, is it?
Mountain Man (CO)
Agree, and how was that a touchdown?
Barbara (Connecticut)
Congratulations to Andy Reid! Excellent coach. A class act. Finally, won his long overdue ring. As to the game: stunning comeback? Down 10? Patriots over Atlanta was a stunning comeback. Shortcomings? Bring back the hilarious ads of the past. Don’t interrupt a night of escape from politics with campaign ads. And, the half time show? Kept thinking - one continuous dancing, wardrobe malfunction.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Could not be happier for the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans. But to be honest, when an announcer said Patrick Mahomes is only 24, I said to my husband, "we have cats older than that kid". He has a brighter and and more brilliant future ahead of him. I see perhaps another Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers in the making. Mahomes is just a pure joy to watch.
Earl M (New Haven)
Hopefully for him, the former, not the latter.
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
@Marge Keller Well said. Also Patrick Mahomes so young, bright quarterback is of mixed race just like our very popular president Obama. Sky is the limit. And trump who could not even identify Kansas is a well known racist. Just saying...
MRod (OR)
Yes, Patrick Mahomes led the 4th quarter touchdown drives to win the game, but in my mind, KC's defense deserves at least equal credit. Had they failed to stop San Francisco on just one drive in the 4th quarter, SF would have used up more clock while going up by 3 scores if they had scored even another field goal. It was the defense repeatedly handing the ball to the offense in the 4th quarter that won the game as much as Mahomes.
bored critic (usa)
The sport has become unwatchable. What 11, 12 minutes of play time takes over 3-1/2 hours. Here are the new rules. 20 minute quarters, running time. Clock runs on incomplete passes and out of bounds. 15 (maybe even 10) second play clock from when ref places the ball at line of scrimmage. This should make the game an almost "no huddle" game and reduce the shuttling in and out of players for every single down. No commercial tv timeouts. Get the ad revenue in at halftime, pregame and postgame. 1 timeout per half. 1 challenge per half. No automatic review of every touchdown. Review upon coach's challenge only. Basically, you will be able to watch a full game, with close to twice the number of plays in approximately 90 minutes. And it will be much more exciting. Prove me wrong
Liz rynex (Chicago)
@bored critic great, but when you can walk away from ads, it will never happen.
Earl M (New Haven)
They do this in Europe and it’s very successful.
karen (bay are)
nor cal girl here. we niners fans have had a rocky few years, since the team moved to nowheresville, gulp, I mean Santa Clara. most probably agree with me-- this was a great season, and we'll be back next year. great game, KC!
M.W. Endres (St.Louis)
The super bowl was stunning but not for the reason suggested in this article. What stunned me, were the burlesque performances by Jennifer Lopez (called J Lo) and Shakira (Isabel Mebarak Ripoli) Nobody uses their real name. It's like they just got out of prison. Other "stunning" performances came immediately after the touchdowns when the scorers put on their own burlesque shows including somersaults. high jumps and various maneuvers including some "bumps and grinds" The "after touchdown" moves by the receivers were better than those of Gypsy Rose Lee in the old burlesque houses. The after touchdown performances are more interesting than the touchdowns When someone asked him about the game, an attendee in Florida replied " The game was OK but but J Lo's moves were terrific ! A few still attend the Super Bowl for the football game but currently, most attend because they can't watch burlesque anymore, except at the Super Bowl. America in 2020.
Robert Fulanovich (Evanston IL)
I knew the game is over with Garoppolo’s first interception, he closed his eyes he’s throwing the ball wildly. That’s a high school play.
Carl (KS)
Nice photo of Damien Williams's right foot as he scores the Chiefs final touchdown.
Bernard Freydberg (Gulfport, FL)
Kyle Shanahan choked in the same way that he choked in Atlanta with his team up 28-3 at one point. Even a non-expert fan like me (an an expert like Troy Aikman) knew that with SF in the lead, a running game was called for--just as it was in Atlanta. His team passed instead--and his team lost again.
Robert Crosman (Berkeley, CA)
@Bernard Freydberg I noticed that too - SF departed from its run-first mentality and put its fortunes in the hands of the obviously over-stressed Jimmy G, who is a good, but clearly not a great, quarterback, unlike Pat Mahomes, who is transcendent. Could the 49ers have won the game if they had stuck to the run? Yes. WOULD they have won? Perhaps, but then the other team had Patrick Mahomes, so chances are the Chiefs would have won anyway, no matter what Shanahan did.
pat (chi)
This is suppose to be family entertainment? What was the NFL thinking?
bored critic (usa)
@pat I didnt even think I was in America
Alexander Harrison (Wilton Manors, Fla.)
Just wish to say how well written this summary of the Super Bowl match was, like Gerald Eskenazi,Red Smith, Dave Anderson, Stanley Woodward and Phil Pepe rolled into one. Next best thing to seeing the game was reading Mr. Shpigel's account. When he wrote about the pass thrown by P.M. into the "grateful arms"of his receiver," think his name was Hill, surname, I said to myself that is "fine writing and "grateful,"is not that the "mot juste!"As mentioned, next best thing to being there at the game was reading the author's piece. "Chapeau," or "Hats off!"
Marge Keller (Midwest)
What a refreshing change to be talking, smiling and cheering about these Chiefs from Kansas City than the other Chief who has monopolized the front page forever and a day, or so it seems.
Paul King (USA)
3 touchdowns in 5 minutes. Are you kidding me! Go find another football game outside of a schoolyard touch game where that happens. (In fairness the first drive started earlier than that) On third and fifteen, (3rd and 15!), the best pass defence in the last 10 years gives up a 44 yard pass completion to Tyreek Hill that saw him run to a spot and literally stand there(!) while Mahomes' pass floated up there for, I dunno, like a minute or two? Are you kidding me. In the crunch, 49ers left their potent running game in San Francisco and got nothing on a series of short game incomplete passes. (a nice 5 yard run then 2nd and 5- incomplete pass… 3rd and 5- same… punt KC touchdown). Too bad. I fast forwarded through the juvenile commercials - do they only hire "creatives" who've been dropped on their heads? And, the typical must to avoid halftime did not disappoint. (so I hear… that 5 minute jump function on my remote served well) McCartney was in the house… most people of all ages love his songs. Bet he would've stepped in. Maybe next year a lone, soulful country singer with a guitar and lyrics that make us think or reflect or laugh or cry. Oh, well. Superbowl Sunday in a great country that used to take some righteous pride in high ideals. Shining city stuff. Now stuck with a low baller who hobs with the rich while faking out the poor. Well disguised fakes are cool in football. For the rest of us, it's 3rd and 15. And, heck, apparently, that's doable.
Ben (Florida)
Tyreek Hill did exactly what you said he did. What you don’t mention, though, is that Hill is the fastest player in the NFL, and he really put the jets on during that play.
Muddlerminnow (Chicago)
Never bet against the Comeback Kid.
Jay Dwight (Western MA)
SF should have deferred the endzone celebration after their last touchdown: don't insult the alligator until you've crossed the river.
Nick Danger (Colorado Springs)
Chiefs totally deserve their victory. But, as Gary points out below, the Chiefs' coaching staff adjusted to the 49ers defense, while the 49ers' coaches did not adjust in the second half. The Chiefs O-line gave Mahomes just enough time, and when they couldn't, Mahomes extended play after play with his legs. The 49ers have got to be wondering how the game would have gone if they had started rushing 5 instead of 4 and tried to put more pressure on Mahomes in the 4th quarter. Great Super Bowl!
DH (Brooklyn, NY)
Why would Shanahan not at least shoot for a field goal before the half? Three timeouts and 2 minutes left? Every point matters in a game like this.
vic_bold_II (Bellingham, WA)
@DH Nailed it...pulling hair out of my scalp watching such atrocious “clock management”. Even the dumbo announcers were mystified when SF allowed tons of time to run off without calling a TO. Cost them in the end, IMO.
music observer (nj)
The game boiled down to two factors 1)Kyle Shanahan didn't learn the lessons of his beat down as OC of Atlanta, he insists on a game plan that in the end causes them to loose. The SF defense did a magnificent job against the KC offense, leaving out the last touchdown which was garbage, they kept Mahommes in check most of the game (including 2 picks). On the opening drive SF came away with a field goal, and on two key drives in the last quarter they had a three an out because Shanahan tried running the ball up the gut then threw the ball on 3rd down (not to mention the pick Garapalo threw). Had they had sustained drives by mostly running the ball, KC would have lost, but Shanahan couldn't adjust. 2)Garapalo is basically Alex Smith 2.0. Alex Smith at times could in a game take it on his shoulders, throw for 4 touchdowns, but for the most part he was a cautious game manager, afraid to shake it out for fear of being picked off. When the game came on his shoulders, he fell apart, Spagnolo changed looks and he got rattled.
Gary W. Priester (Placitas, NM USA)
I don't think it was stunning at all. The niners had the first half and the Chiefs readjusted at half time and came back stronger in the second half.
Alan (N.A. continental landmass)
Watching the Niners' defense celebrating that interception in the end zone felt premature and fate-testing.
Jim (Brooklyn)
Still curious about the 49ers time management during their last possession before the half. To me, it made no sense.
Ken Nyt (Chicago)
As a lifelong Cubs fan I can feel the Chiefs fans’ glee. And didn’t that seem like a faster-than-normal game? (And I wasn’t even drinking anything!)
George Blanck (NYC)
Reducing a game down to two plays probably isnt fair but in my view it came down to one play that (improbably) was and one that (unfortunatley for the 49ers) wasn't. Mahomes 44 yd pass to Hill so wide open he could wait for seconds for the wobbly ball - that made the rest of the comeback possible. The other Garoppolo overthrowing Sanders who was also wide open - that play would have put the 49ers where their defense could seal it. Oh well...
Alexander Harrison (Wilton Manors, Fla.)
@George Blanck : OVERLOOKED is the CHARISMA of Coach Reid. Admit to being prejudiced in his favor as a die hard Eagles fan, but Reid is a father figure to his players, and knows how to motivate them. Shanahan,49ers coach, is only a decade or so older than his players, so father figure image was not there. Also sensed a lack of passion on Shanahan's part.He had a glum countenance throughout the game, whereas Reid appeared more animated, more into it, and players showed their appreciation for Reid's "engage" frame of mind in encomiums to him after the game.
Doctor Woo (Orange, NJ)
Probably fixed like most of them are. If you look at it from a bookmakers point of view. Started at just about Even money. The 49'ers were ahead most of the game well into the 4th quarter. All the money went on them from halftime. And boom .. pass interference that wasn't pass interference and The Chiefs are at 17. .. It has become an art form on how they will choreograph ( fix ) it. The bookies make a trillion.
leighroi (Kansas City)
@Doctor Woo It was definitely pass interference.
John (CT)
The 49ers learned nothing from the Texans and Titans debacle against the Chiefs. Using a "Prevent" defense against Mahomes failed twice when the Texans and Titans deployed it...so what does Shanahan do? He plays a "Prevent" defense on 3rd and 15....which results in zero pass rush against a quarterback who excels when he has all day to find an open receiver or run the ball himself. The result: Mahomes finds a wide open receiver against the "Prevent" defense for a 44 yard catch. When will these coaches finally abolish the "Prevent" defense...and actually run some blitzes in these situations to put the game away? "The "Prevent" defense needs to be renamed the "Let The Other Team Back In The Game" defense.
curt hill (el sobrante, ca)
@John well, you saw the Chiefs run some blitzes when the "smart" play was the prevent. no surprise they won - aggressive to the last.
James Osborne (Los Angeles)
Recipe for enjoying the SB game: set DVR; start watching 1 hour after kick off; fast forward through all commercials and half-time nonsense; rinse & repeat in second half. Turn off immediately after final play.
Paul King (USA)
Those instructions apply to all commercial TV. And, especially for tomorrow's State of the Union. (set DVR for basketball)
Feldman (Portland)
One can be pleased that a mid-America city can have this championship; it's an honor both earned and deserved. KC is a really fine team -- champion level. That said, I felt that SF could very asily have also won this game, simply by managing the time far, far better starting with their possession at the 2:40 mn mark in the 4th quarter. They were behind by one TD. It could easily have been their comeback. What they had to do was use a TO to gather their wits when they were in a 2nd & 10, or a 3rd & 15. Instead, they rushed trying to save 'time' ... and blew it.
Feldman (Portland)
@Feldman That TO that SF could've/should've used would also have served somewhat to break up some defensive momentum KC had acquired by having just scored twice.
mlb4ever (New York)
I usually root for the team with the longest Super Bowl drought and this year's game certainly did not disappoint. So happy for coach Andy Reid and what else is left to you say about Patrick Mahomes.
Frank (South Orange)
Good game. Boring commercials. Halftime meh.
MJ2G (Canada)
Great game. Chiefs fan since Super Bowl I (yep, 54 years ago). As for the half-time sensory overload, having one of Shakira or J-Lo would have been OK I guess, but since they’re basically the same act, well, I don’t get it.
HD (Des Moines)
Sure. All Latinas are the same. No difference that they are from different countries, sing different styles, and have very different voices.
susan (nyc)
ESPN showed an interesting tidbit on Kyle Shanahan. He was the offensive coordinator for the Falcons when they played in the SB against the Patriots. The Falcons virtually had the game in hand and they lost. I think Shanahan made a lot of bone-headed decisions in last night's SB. Andy Reid is a veteran coach and it showed last night. I'm happy for him, the team and their fans. They deserved to win. And Patrick Mahomes proved once again that he is the "come back kid." Near the end of he game we could see him shouting to his team "Finish the game!!!" He deserves the MVP. He never panicked and he was relentless. That's what a champion is.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@susan Fantastic comment!
LaPine (Pacific Northwest)
@susan Like he did when the offensive coordinator with the Falcons, with a 25-point lead, they stopped running the ball. The 49ers needed to grind it out on the ground and didn't. Why? The clock needed to be managed. What happened that they didn't switch to a run game after leading by 10?
Helen Lewis (Hillsboro OR)
One of the best parts of the day for me was spotting a Chief player making a snow angel in a huge mound of confetti. You go, Man!
Marge Keller (Midwest)
After such a crushing defeat, San Francisco left their hearts in Miami. The first two things that come to mind when I think of Kansas City is barbecue and Blues. I can now add Super Bowl Champs to that list of illustrious accomplishments. The Chiefs played a remarkable game. While I was great disappointed that the Packers did not make it to the Super Bowl, I sure am thrilled that it was the Chiefs who won the title. There's something about a 50 yr drought that makes last night's win all the more sweeter and appreciated. Well done and a sincere congrats to the Chiefs, the great homestead of Kansas City and its residents and the many, many fans!
MWG (KS)
Well played Kansas City Chiefs! A strong team coached by the best with a quarterback that learned through his sports years from all of his many coaches how to bring a win home. This was a thrilling game. Kansas City [both Missouri and Kansas] is proud and grateful. Mahomes's and his team/coaches have captured the attention of the nation. Such a pleasure to see good guys finishing with the big Super Bowl win.
Stan Sutton (Westchester County, NY)
I agree with others here that this was a great game with too many distractions. The Super Bowl in general would be a better game to watch if played like a regular game. The "halftime" show could be moved to after the game, when there would be more time for it and people might really feel like partying--whether to celebrate or forget.
Lillijag (OH)
Days if not weeks before the game they actually lured people in to watch other ads in between the promise of sneak previews of the Super Bowl ads. No thanks. At least I can light my wood burner with junk mail. Oh, the game was great, the actual football part.
Scott (Bellingham)
@Lillijag DVR is the best for football. We got to enjoy entirety of the first day of sun in a month in WA state until sunset and came in to start the game late and fast forward through all the commercials.
Brent (Woodstock)
@Lillijag I liked the Bill Murray Jeep, Groundhog Day commercial.
Javaforce (California)
Kudos to Mahoney and the Chiefs and the 49ers it was an exiting game that either team could have won. I also learned that Kansas City is in Kansas.
Ellen (Missouri)
@Javaforce I was about to explain that the KC metro is in both Missouri and Kansas, and that the team plays in Missouri.....until I realized that it's not you but our President who needs the geography tip.....
jmj (kansas city)
There are 2 Kansas Citys. Kansas City Chiefs are in Kansas City, Missouri, the much bigger of the 2 cities. Yes, there is a Kansas City, Kansas, across the Missouri river. Yes, different but true.
Evelyn J HerronI (Lexington,KY)
@jmj There is also the Johnson County, Ks suburbs composed of towns like Overland Park, Prairie Village, Leawood, Merriam, Shawnee, Lenexa, and more. Johnson County is part of the Greater Kansas City Area, and is full of Chiefs and Royals fans; very much in Kansas.
Dan88 (Long Island NY)
Was CTE cured and I didn't hear about it? Was Colin Kaepernick compensated by the NFL for his treatment? Did "Chiefs" and "Redskins" become less offensive to our original American population?
Kelly Armstrong (Winnipeg)
Being a Chiefs fan has been a trying experience for the 40 years I've followed them. Especially hard supporting the team from 1,000 miles away in Canada. I've had streaming subscriptions for years just so I could actually see Chiefs games during regular season. Still trying to process the fact we won; we didn't collapse. And to process the fact that our much-maligned defence played like tigers through the playoffs when we needed them most. And very proud of Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff on the O line. Encroyable.
Scott (Bellingham)
@Kelly Armstrong congrats from a Seahawks fan, thanks for doing us a solid and taking out the niners!
kim mills (goult)
Kelly Armstrong : that would be "incroyable", but then, you're not in French-speaking Canada so never mind. { :-)
Ralphie (CT)
good game, if you could watch it with any sense of continuity given the ridiculous commercials, the horrible half time and the way way way too long pregame. How about we play the SB like a regular game. Fifteen minute half time (unless you have a really good band). Forcing the players to wait while a seemingly endless and forgettable halftime winds its way down is an abomination. Too much hype all around But the good news -- no patriots this year. And Mahomes is maybe the best qb of all time. Still has to produce more, but he's on a different level.
how bad can it be (ne)
Now if only Missouri could get a football team.....
Liz rynex (Chicago)
@how bad can it be ha, I get that.
Markus (Tucson)
A comeback didn't seem possible, momentum had gone so far against the Chiefs. I truly did not think it possible with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Overall, a great game by two great teams. We could see either or both of them in upcoming Super Bowls. Glad for Andy Reid, the monkey is forever off his back. 50 years since the last Super Bowl for KC? Wow.
Pat (Somewhere)
The game was great, the commercials were lame and forgettable as was the lip-synched half-time show. And that is as it should be.
Brent (Woodstock)
@Pat The halftime dancing was grotesque burlesque.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@Pat Well actually, there were 2 memorable commercials. First was the Google ad which featured a man asking Google to remember certain things about his late wife. The commercial was based on a true story, according to the company's chief marketing officer. The second commercial was by WeatherTech featuring the CFO's dog, Scout. The CFO spent $6 million of his own money and devoted that ad to the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, which saved his dog Scout from terminal cancer. A moving and touching story doesn't begin to scratch the surface. The remainder of the commercials were so boring and nondescript, I can't remember any of them.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@Brent That is a very polite and discreet way of calling it something far worse. Disgraceful and embarrassing across the board.
Bello (Western Mass)
Great game! KC showed championship poise in Q4 while SF snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Tim (Upstate New York)
A real thriller of a game between two sides that respect each other - just what our divided nation needs at this time.
Mary (Kansas)
@Tim Well said.
Bruce Rozenblit (Kansas City, MO)
I don't believe it. I was in the ninth grade the last time we won a Super Bowl. We were in the first and then the fourth, so everyone thought that we would be back in a few years. It took 50. The disappointments came like the spring rain. What now? What calamity will befall the Chiefs this year? Post season blowout was a certainty, year after year. Always a contender, and aways a post season loser. But it finally happened. It took a mind bending 50 years. Kansas City is a small market but very supportive of the Chiefs. In fact, the Chiefs are the home team for many millions of folks in the nearby states. You can travel hundreds of miles in just about any direction before you can find another NFL team. So this win was a big boost for the entire region. Now, about that repeat performance next year!
JK (Texas)
@Bruce Rozenblit I too grew up in KC and went to school with children of some players and coaches. I discovered I could hold my breath (sorta) the whole game....hoping for a win. So so proud of the Chiefs and all of KC for their support.
Dr. H (Lubbock, Texas)
@Bruce Rozenblit You are absolutely correct. The Kansas Chiefs can count probably about 275,000 fans rooting for them, here in Lubbock, Texas, at the southernmost tip of the Great Plains. Doubtlessly everyone in Lubbock, TX supported the Kansas City Chiefs for this Super Bowl, because of our feeling of great regard for and pride in Patrick Mahomes, alumnus of Texas Tech University and quarterback for the TTU Red Raiders. You could not hear a single vehicle moving on the major highways and streets near our home last night: everyone instead most certainly was at home or in front of a screen anywhere, to watch Patrick Mahomes pull off what we learned long ago we can always expect with confidence from him: and that is to yet another series of dazzlers at the near end of a game!
John (Pittsburgh/Cologne)
@Bruce Rozenblit I've been to KC a number of times and always enjoyed it. It's a great city deserving of a championship. Congratulations to the team and fans alike.
Ed (Washington DC)
What a game. The 49rs played very good and had em..... but then on came the Chiefs. The Chiefs put it all on the line. Way to play the game Chiefs. Excellent decisionmaking and risk taking down the line. Going for it several time on the 4th down and getting the yards needed time and time again. Excellent time management. Excellent coaching decisions Excellent execution by the offensive line Excellent pressure on the 49rs offensive line, defense. Special teams knocked their socks off too. Kudos to the Chiefs and to Kansas City.
Glenn Thomas (Earth)
What's to say? Mahomes is the talent of a generation.
Stefan (PA)
@Glenn Thomas he played horribly for 80% of the game though
Edward Sheehy (Minneapolis)
@Stefan but it was the 20% coming from behind that mattered.
cortezthekiller (chicago)
@Stefan The ability to shake off one's mistakes and let the greatness flow is what distinguishes elite athletes. Too often we ordinary humans let a mistake in the morning define our whole day.
Michael Livingston’s (Cheltenham PA)
It’s partly Mahomes but also some, well, strange decisions by the 49ers coaching staff. Like throwing the ball when you’re ahead and have a great running game. What’s up with that?
music observer (nj)
@Michael Livingston’s Very easy, SF HC=Atlanta OC who up 28-3 in the third quarter decided to throw the ball when they had been running all over the Patriots. Reputedly it was because Shanahan and Quinn wanted to 'stick it to the patriots', you have to wonder if Shanahan wanted to do the same thing to the chiefs of Mahommes and Reid. The fact is the SF offense lost the game, not the SF defense, they had Mahommes number most of the game, and the SF offense went dead just when they needed to run out the clock and keep it from Mahommes hands. That isn't a knock on Mahommes or the KC offense, they made the plays when they needed to an won, but SF's poor decision making and Garapalo being a game manager doomed them.
Jim (TX)
How about some family entertainment for half-time next year. The incessant hunching is getting old, not to mention the trashy lyrics. There's such great singing talent in the world today and many have uplifting songs everyone can enjoy.
Pat (Somewhere)
@Jim Also it was a boring sensory overload designed to distract from the lip-synched vocals. Get some performers with the talent to actually, you know, perform live. We all understand it will not sound exactly like the recording and that's OK.
Scott (Bellingham)
@Jim I enjoyed it. I thought the dancing (including backup dancers) was awesome.
Alan (N.A. continental landmass)
@Pat Prince did it right.
MIMA (heartsny)
Congratulation Chiefs. Too bad Donald Trump couldn’t even get your state right.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@MIMA I would have been more shocked if he HAD gotten the state right.
cortezthekiller (chicago)
@MIMA He got it right, just not complete. There's a Kansas City, KS and a Kansas City, Mo. Chiefs fans are divided between KS and Missouri, in fact most probably live in Kansas. This confusion is inevitable given that there's no other place in America where two cities sit beside each other with the same name.
Tim Kane (Mesa, Arizona)
@MIMA That state has won 2 world Championships inside 12 months time. Both after 5 decades of waiting.
Meghan Duval (NY)
The game may have been great, but everything around it was ugly and disappointing. Starting the game off with kids playing tackle football wearing no helmets, passed by kids riding bikes with no helmets. Did the NFL forget about CTE? Commercials that suggest a giant Snickers will solve global issues. An avocado that wears a helmet but the football playing kids do not. A talented and beautiful 50 year old J Lo asked to wear lingerie and dance on a pole as an example of what? All that and more in a game already a little upsetting to Native Americans. I really do not think the NFL could have been any more tone deaf to 2020.
Pat (Somewhere)
@Meghan Duval Excellent points, although I doubt J Lo had to be asked to wear revealing outfits. She's a veteran performer who knows what sells and attracts attention, so if anything the producers of the show were probably more concerned with her showing too much instead of not enough.
Roger Paine (Boulder, CO)
@Meghan Duval "...more than a little upsetting to Native Americans." The Kansas City players are obviously a very talented bunch who never give up. But those K.C. fans with their ugly chant make me feel sick.
HD (Des Moines)
@Meghan Duval She was just in Hustlers, about a pole dancer. JLo is very much in charge of herself. I'd say she is an example of talent, beauty, and business savvy.
BC (NJ)
Good game marred by a terrible halftime show and Troy Aikman’s rambling color commentary.
music observer (nj)
@BC They should get Frank Caliendo to do the game call doing his Madden and Summerall imitation, it would definitely be more fun than Aikman and Buck.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@BC I cannot stand neither Aikman nor Buck. I wish Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels were the announcers because they are smart, knowledgeable, funny and just a joy to listen to. If either has a biased towards one team or the other, they never let that show because they are always fair in their comments, observations and critiques - they are everything Troy Aikman and Joe Buck are not.
Cardinal Fan (New Orleans)
Excellent super bowl. Now, about those commercials....yech!, right?
Markus (Tucson)
@Cardinal Fan A couple exceptions. Bill Murray's Jeep commercial won the day for me. The Mountain Dew parody of The Shining, also good.
music observer (nj)
@Cardinal Fan Pretty much, the groundhog day one was okay, the Alexa commercial (what was it like before they had Alexa) was pretty funny, and the Porsche Commercial was kind of fun. However, nothing earth shattering, and i missed the Clydesdale horses.
Dr. H (Lubbock, Texas)
@music observer : Ditto on that: yeah, WHERE were the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales?
SGK (Austin Area)
My wife and I are not the best football fans. But we watched mostly the last half -- and naturally got deep into the fourth quarter as KC took charge, with Mahomes dominating and SF losing steam. Halftime had been beautifully raucous and sensational, with J-Lo and Shakira -- and somehow it set the stage for the game itself turning into a who-knows-what-happens-next event. Kansas City and the Chiefs took charge and deserved the win. All the crazy confetti displayed the celebration well: a snowstorm of joy and pride and victory finally coming after so many years. Congrats to all -- including to the 49ers who played hard as well -- we were glad the cameras showed a few of players from both teams hugging it out at the end. As always, don't forget: great commercials!

Marge Keller (Midwest)
San Francisco played an amazing game. I thought for sure they had victory nicely tucked in their pocket. But once again, Patrick Mahomes and those Chiefs rose to the occasion and nailed it in the final moments. Both teams played remarkable. Crushing defeat for SF while an exhilarating win by KC. Congrats to Kansas City and to those fantastic Chiefs. And it was nice to see Andy Reid actually smile. Didn't know he had it in him.
Jack (Middletown, Connecticut)
I thought San Francisco had it but for some poor play calling by them at the end.
Peabody (CA)
Congrats to both the KC Chiefs and much admiration for the SF 49ers. Great game with loads of suspense. Mahomes is a deserving Super Bowl MVP with a winning personality who is a tonic against the pervasive cynicism in our country. I hope he rewrites the record books in the years to come.
John Grillo (Edgewater, MD)
To dredge up a well-worn Yogiism, “It ain’t over until it’s over”.
Anita (Richmond)
Wow, I made the mistake of going to bed with 8 minutes left - likely the best last 8 minutes in sports ever. Hats off to Reid and his team and that quarterback. Just wow!
Phil (Brooklyn)
Let’s face it: The NFL wanted a story in which a team, led by an African American quarterback makes a 59 year comeback. When it became apparent that the Chiefs couldn’t deliver it themselves, the refs took charge with one bogus pass interference call followed by another bogus offensive pass interference call. At this point, pro football has as much credibility as “professional” wrestling.
Ken (VA)
@Phil Extending your arm to push the defender back will get you called every single time.
Bob (kansas city)
@Phil ----Cheer up, the NFL is laughing all the way to the bank, that's all that matters.
Chuck (Liberty, MO)
@Phil Both good calls - sour grapes?
cd (ct)
weak coaching by Shanahan. accepting 10-10 at half time. you had 3 time outs available, at least get 3. then sitting on a 10 pt lead? really? against the chiefs? didn't you watch the titans game? it's the Super Bowl man! you don't stop scoring. rookie mistake in the biggest game. sheesh. on the other hand, what a season by the Niners. and Mahomes, long may you run.
B Sharp (Cincinnati)
What a fantastic comeback for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes ! We lived in Kansas City for 30 years as our Son grew up going to the games and watching them year after year. This year his wife gave him an amazing gift to be at the Super Bowl and now they are beyond being ecstatic !
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Which side inflicted the most CTE on the other, the only stat that really counts for something?
Alan (N.A. continental landmass)
@MIKEinNYC What have you done to curb Homo sapiens' destruction of our planet, the one thing that really matters? Being insufferable is easy.
Viriditas (Rocky Mountains)
Mahomes changes the narrative. The faithful are rewarded. Great win, great city.
Andy (Sarasota, FL)
Well written! Good summary of this good game. Mahomes and the Chiefs did it again. They were the comeback kids!
ar (Greenwich)
Awesome! What a fabulous Super Bowl. I loved every second of it.
Gina (austin)
Born and raised in KC. This victory means a lot! What a fun team to watch.
Mark Lebow (Milwaukee)
That fourth quarter was a sight to behold. The truly great quarterbacks put their teams on their backs and carry them to victory.
Robertinho (Guyana)
@Mark Lebow, Indeed. But football is a sport that takes place on both sides of the ball. After struggling in the 3rd quarter, the Chiefs defense came up real big in the 4th and had some key stops that allowed Mahomes and his squad to work their magic. Credit goes all the way around....
Horseshoe Crab (South Orleans, MA)
Sometimes nice guys do finish first - congratulations to Andy Reid, a real class act and a credit to the game. And, oh yeah that quarterback gets some credit as well. Thanks Chiefs for a great game. Have a wild celebration in the great state of Kansas!
Robertinho (Guyana)
@Horseshoe Crab, Don't forget Missouri... Kansas City is also in Missouri. In fact, more of Kansas City is in MO than in KS!
A Kadri (Missoula)
Missouri is the home of KC Chiefs!
Rex Nimbus (Planet Earth)
@Horseshoe Crab The Kansas City Chiefs are based in Kansas City, Missouri, not Kansas.
JS (Ohio)
This was an amazing game to watch, and I am someone who does not usually manage to watch the whole thing. So happy for Pat Mahomes. He's gonna be fun to watch for a long time!
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@JS I agree wholeheartedly. Patrick Mahomes reminds me of a very young Aaron Rogers, who are really good friends.
Hnky (midwest)
@Marge Keller While that's a nice compliment, I disagree with the comparison. IMO Mahomes is better than Aaron Rodgers. For instance, I don't recall A. Rodgers ever switching the ball to his left hand as he was grabbed from the right, and throwing a complete pass. Or dropping his arm to throw submarine passes under the defense's raised arms, which he does regularly. Mahomes' football intelligence and creativity in making plays is truly unusual.
Dale Irwin (KC Mo)
To hear the whole city come alive with shouts of joy, horns honking and fireworks cascadinging in the night sky brought forth a palpable sense of community. The heartfelt manners and genuineness of Reid, Mahomes and the rest capture perfectly what this city in the heartland is all about. Being happy for someone else’s good fortune is the best, especially when they have worked so hard, given their all for it and openly exhibit such a sense humility and gratitude for that good fortune.
Ben (Florida)
Kansas City is one of my favorite cities in America, period. A few years back I drove to Denver. I spent a few days in Kansas City and I loved it. It is extremely underrated.
Peter (Kansas City MO)
@Dale Irwin well said!!
Dale Irwin (KC Mo)
@Ben Some years ago I became good friends with a guy who, in retirement, moved here from New York. He would often joke that when friends called and asked him how it was living here, he would say it was horrible, because he didn't want to give away the secret he had stumbled upon.
Ben (Florida)
It was a great game. Best Super Bowl in recent memory.
Ben (Florida)
I love Mahomes, but was surprised that Williams didn’t get the game MVP.
LM (NYC)
@Ben Agree - best in recent memory. Looking for many great seasons from Mahomes and Chiefs. Only 2008 Giants over Patriots and again 2012 Giants over Patriots compare. But then again I'm a NY-er.
Stefan (PA)
@Ben the best super bowel in recent memory? Did you forget Patriots vs the Eagles?
