Did You Watch the Super Bowl? What Did You Think?

As a Kansas City Chiefs Fan myself I was very pleased with the results from Super Bowl 54. Patrick Mahomes finally showed off to the world why he is the best player in the NFL. The chiefs were down for most of the game but clutch passing touchdowns from Mahomes to Travis Kelce, and Damien Williams. The Damien Williams put the icing on the cake as he scored a touchdown in the final minutes to put the Chiefs up 31-20. Personally, I did not watch the half time show because when I watch football I use halftime to use the bathroom, get some food, and just hang around. The commercials have slowly became worse as the years past. I don’t know why, but maybe we need some younger talent working for corporations marketing teams. Super Bowl 54, is definitely my favorite Super Bowl of all-time.
Alex (Boyle Heights)
My reaction of this years Super bowl was shocking because it was a suspense game and the 49er's almost caught up but the chiefs won.I was surprise when the Chiefs got the 10 points because it looked like the Chiefs were going to give up until they threw a touchdown and used a field goal.Best Superbowl of the New year.

I diddn t watch the super bowl becayse my mom wanted me to go out side but i did watch the highlights and the cheifs made the best combacks

I was surprised that the Kansas City Chiefs were able to make a comeback in the fourth quarter. I almost went to sleep but I’m glad I stayed for the ending. I agree with Jon Pareles, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira looked like they were really having a “party” in their glittery outfits. I feel like their “no-nonsense affirmation of Latin pride and cultural diversity in a political climate” message was taken less impactfully than they would want it to be because of their dancing. Many people were watching the dancing more than the feathered reversed American and Puerto Rican pride flag. I feel that the dancing was balanced out by the children’s choir. But who would want their kids seeing dancing like that and knowing it at a young age? Everyone always puts way too much excitement over the Super Bowl ads making it feel like a disappointment when everyone actually sees them. The Super Bowl advertisements are always fun but it was refreshing to see the sentimental ads this year. I felt that everyone loved the “Lucky Dog” ad with the golden retriever who survived heart surgery. I really enjoyed the Snickers commercial. I think the Super Bowl is an awesome event that bonds all sports lovers all through a TV. I don’t watch a lot of football but I love the time I spend with all my family watching it. I’m wondering, why can’t some of this hype be put towards more productive tasks?
Gaby (Fresno, CA)
Yes. I watched the Super Bowl. I usually don't find it that entertaining but this year, my parents were so excited that Shakira and Jlo were performing which made me excited. I was even dancing and singing along with Shakira because she sang lots of her old songs. The game itself was also entertaining which is wild because I never find games like this entertaining. The ads were great I always look forward to them because they're almost always really meaningful or funny.
Jesus L. (Fresno,California)
@Gaby I agree with this, I didn't watch the super bowl but I watched the Shakira and JLo performance, it was also trending on Twitter so I think that that was the biggest event that took place at the super bowl.
Conner Kelley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I was surprised that Kansas City was able to come back from a 10 point difference. I agree with Jon Pareles's statement that the halftime show was "a party". The Super Bowl ads this year were not as good as previous years and I think the ads have gotten less creative over time. I think the Super Bowl is a great time for everyone to get together and watch TV and eat.
Doug (Atlanta, GA)
I think that the 2019-2020 season had the perfect conclusion with Superbowl 54. I was personally rooting for the 49ers because I have some good friends that grew up rooting for the Niners, but I was not disappointed with the outcome when the clock hit zero. The game itself was fun to watch and significantly more fun than the defensive showdown in last year's Superbowl. The Cheifs had a good gameplan defensively, and the offense was only efficient in the last 10 minutes of the game. Even though I wasn't paying much attention to the halftime show, I thought it was one of the better concerts that I've seen on TV in a while. And I felt that the commercials were a little bit of a letdown, especially if companies are spending $5.6 million even to have their ad in the Superbowl, not to mention production costs. Overall I thought that this year's conclusion to the 2019-2020 football season was well worth it.
Daniel Guy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Doug I agree that Super Bowl 54 is one to remember, starting with the Chiefs winning their first Super Bowl in 50 years to the halftime show being one of the better ones compared to the previous halftime shows.
Elaina Thomas (Lubbock, TX)
I was absolutely satisfied with the outcome of this year’s Superbowl! While I am not a huge football fan throughout the NFL season, anyone who witnessed the championship would say that the game was one for the books! Especially for Patrick Mahomes; being the youngest player to win the Superbowl as an M.V.P. Mahomes played college football in my hometown, so he has a huge amount of love and support from my city and me. The comeback made by the Kansas City Chiefs in the last quarter was very exciting, and not that big of a surprise. A lot can happen in a 15 minute quarter (3 touchdowns for instance), and I am just happy that our boy Mahomes could make history for his team and the league on football’s biggest night. My love for the Dallas Cowboys is still number one in my family, but it was really nice to have a team to root for in this year’s Superbowl. What a game!!
Joanna Orda (Glenbard West Highschool)
Before this years Super Bowl everyone was raving about their excitement for the highly anticipated commercials. Unfortunately everyone’s response after the Super Bowl was in one way boring. The commercials did not come close to how good they were in the past years and I mean let’s never forget the famous “puppy, monkey, baby” commercial. Although the commercials lacked the “hype” and excitement they once had there was some very interesting ones and how they tried to have an affect on pop culture. One of them being to popularize the term “Cheetle” as “Cheeto dust”. The other thing I really enjoyed about the commercials was how they have created a nostalgic affect amongst the generation of parents and grandparents. Overall I had an enjoyable experience watching the Super Bowl and commercials with my friends and look forward to it every year.
Charlotte Todd (Hoggard High School)
@Joanna Orda I too was disappointed with this years commercials. My family and I always love watching the commercials and then for the next week we'll talk about them and laugh. The old M&M commercial, the goat Doritos one, and Missy Elliott rapping, are incomparable to the "Cheetle" or the rerun of "Jake from State Farm", I feel as if I see better commercials watching "The Bachelor" on Hulu and I honestly feel bad for the companies that spent so much money on these tragic let downs.
Daniel Kaminski (Glenbard West)
The commercials during this years Super Bowl were overall very enjoyable to watch. I really enjoyed the emotional story line Planters took us through with the downfall of Mr Peanut and then the surprise of rebirth in the form of Baby Nut. I have already come to love Baby Nut as the new face the Planters franchise and have fully embraced this new character. The death of Mr Peanut truly tugged at my heart strings along with millions of others watching worldwide. The surprise and joy I felt when Baby Nut sprouted from the tears of The Kool Aid Man’s was unfathomable. My friends and I let out an “Oh yeah!” similar to that of the popular catch phrase of the Kool Aid Man. Planters reminds us that all life is precious in this advertising campaign and we should all take notice. Take time out of your day to cherish your loved ones as death can come at any moment.
Will Sackett (Glenbard West)
The Super Bowl lineup of players was full of superstars as was the ads and halftime show. Despite a major increase in cost for a 30 second commercial increasing the price to 5.6 million the ads seemed to be a little lack luster and not as good as they’ve been in the past. Despite this some ads did end up shining like the planters and the Jeep commercials. I also believed the half time show was not the best despite being a major step up from Adam Lavine the music was not very good.
Conner Kelley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Will Sackett I agree that the ads have started to not be as good as they used to be.
Jack McGurk (Glenbard West High School)
This year, a thirty second Super Bowl ad was a record breaking 5.6 million dollars; so the commercials should have been some of the best ever, right? While some like Jeep’s commercial featuring Bill Murray made me smile, others like Doritos and Secret were either a poor use of talent or just down right illogical. Spending an insane amount of money on a Super bowl ad puts too much pressure on companies to make something unique, and as a result, most of the time they end up making something weird or just doesn’t click. The Doritos commercial had both modern country music star Lil Nas X and the classic picture of an American Cowboy Sam Elliot in the same commercial. Instead of taking this golden opportunity to symbolize an old star like Sam passing the torch to Lil Nas X, they just made Sam do a modern dance to one of Lil Nas X’s songs. The entire ad had me full body cringing and left a bad taste in my mouth. But the Secret commercial was arguably worse. The ad was set during the final play of what was presumably the final play of a big football game. The players are lined up for a field goal and after they won the kicker took their helmet off and fans were surprised when it was revealed to be a girl. This commercial made no sense, if there was a female kicker everyone would already know about it. The commercial is a poor attempt at trying to take advantage of the women rights movement to make money.
Graci Yost (Lakewood High School)
@Jack McGurk I agree that some of the advertisements were off-kilter. The Olay’s advertisement was a women empowerment fail. In the beginning, there were women walking powerfully towards the spaceship. But in the end, the TV showed one of the women accidentally knocking the Olay knob that blasted them to space. That portrayed the women as ditzy and unassuming. I thought the rest of the ads were relatively good.

I was very happy with the results of this years super bowl. Personally, I am a die hard Chicago Bears fan, but found myself routing for the young superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. But the Mahomes family has more than one superstar. Patrick Mahomes’ brother, Jackson Mahomes, is a famous creator on the app Tiktok. TikTok is an app where people from around the world post videos of themselves singing and dancing to popular songs. Jackson currently has more than 400,000 followers on the app. He does not only get this fame from his last name, but from his incredible dancing skills and collaborations with other famous tiktokers, including Charli Damelio and Dixie Damelio. Jackson constantly posts Tiktoks of him dancing on the sideline after the Chiefs win, which they do a lot of. The Mahomes brothers are about to take over the football and social media world. Everyone get prepared for the next decade of the reign of Patrick and Jackson.
Jack McGurk (Glenbard West High School)
@Eddie Bair I like how you overlooked the success of Patrick Mahomes to focus on someone who is just as important. Jackson is an inspiration to me and I hope to one day have more TikTok followers than him. Once again, thanks for reminding me about this overlooked American hero.
Emilio Martinez (Arleta, CA)
Coming from an immigrant family, my mom emigrating from Mexico and my dad from El Salvador, we never watched American Football and were never showed interest in the sport. Being Latinx my family was entertained through sports like Soccer, and this is how we bonded as a family. The only exception being the Superbowl, like many American families we gather together, watch the game, enjoy the commercials, and marvel at the talent of the performers during the half-time show. This year was very different however, it seems that February snuck upon us. I ended up only watching the half-time show, yet I was joined with my friends, all of us unaware of the huge event going on as were holding a group study session at my house. Once the half-time show started we were all blown away by the artists' dances and energy. I was genuinely surprised at the artists performing, I was unaware that it was J-Lo and Shakira, two artists I've loved since my childhood. I've debated with many of my classmates on the performance level of the artists, in my opinion, I prefer the performance given by J-Lo. While I was able to recognize every single Shakira song and sing along, J-Lo delivered an outstanding performance that left me shocked and amazed. For a fifty-year-old, she did not hold back and there was no point where I wasn't amazed at her stage presence. J-Lo delivered an iconic performance that cannot be matched by any other artist, the pairing of Shakira and J-Lo was a match made in heaven!
Jesse Gonzalez (Arleta Cali)
@Emilio Martinez I also come from a family, of immigrants, and seeing this representation of Latin culture, and overall identity was oddly heartwarming! I do have to disagree with your saying J-lo had the better performance, though. She definitely knows how to put on a show, given her roots as a dancer, so in that regard she overshadowed Shakira. But, in terms of songs and vocals in general, I think she came short of Shakira; a singer will be better at singing than a dancer, and a dancer will be better at dancing than a singer! ((:

I think that this year's Super Bowl was a very evenly matched game with the defense of the 49ers and the offense of the Chiefs. I was not surprised that the Chiefs came back late in the game because in the second half you could tell that the Chiefs had momentum on their side and were playing much faster and harder than the 49ers. I agree that it was “a party”, but I do not think that it was an affirmation of Latin culture because it was very basic when it came to how it was conducted. Not saying that it was like every other Super Bowl Halftime show, but it was nothing surprising and there was not anything that really stuck out to me that it was showing Latin culture. I think that the Super Bowl commercials were very underwhelming this year. I am not sure if that is the content creators fault or the fact that the content was very limited because of the price of a 30 second advertisement. But overall, there were not any commercials that stuck out or were impactful to me in any way. I think that the Super Bowl is a great tradition. For many people, they have traditions for every Super Bowl that they do. It also brings lots of people together over a common interest which is football and it can lead to some great friendships and community building. I think bonding over a sport, especially the championship game is a great thing that we do as a community.
Sam Ford (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn IL)
This years Super Bowl was one of the most exciting games I’ve watched as an NFL fan, and a football fanatic. The beginning of the game was a complete toss up of who would come out victorious in my mind. Everything I’ve heard around the sports world was the old cliché of “defense wins championships”. Many of the biggest sports minds in the world were betting against the Kansas City Chiefs, but in my mind I just couldn’t do it. A quarterback is the most influential player on the field by deciding where the ball will go each and every play. With Patrick Mahomes being that man, I couldn’t bet against him. I bet $100 on the Chiefs against my friend, who thought the 49ers would take home the win. The game was a rollercoaster throughout all four quarters, and it wasn’t until the Damien Williams breakout touchdown at the end of the game did I know I would be 100 dollars richer. This game was a memorable one to watch with how close it came, and of course the NFL’s 100 year anniversary. Nothing disappointed me about this game, not even the commercials. I believe this solidifies Patrick Mahomes as the best quarterback in the league, and the Kansas City Chiefs May be the next Patriots. A dynasty in the making.
Stephanie Cueva (King Of Prussia, PA)
I only watched the first few minutes of the first quarter and then stopped watching it for the rest of the night. I have fully watched the previous SuperBowls when I was more interested in it but now I'm more worried about high school and friendships. I was not surprised that Kansas City was able to come back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter because it's just from talent and luck. My favorite ad that stood out to me the most would be the Rick and Morty ad with the pringles. It was really funny and my boyfriend likes watching the show and he's able to perfectly sound like Rick. I think the Super Bowl brings family and friends together one night every year to relax and have fun. It has a major impact on the American Culture because it turned out to be one of the major American pastimes over the years.
Reilly Johnson (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
The Super Bowl is one of the only football games I watch each year. I thought this year the big game really lived up to the expectations that people want out of watching a football game. The competitiveness of everyone comes out, even if neither of the two teams are “their team.” The commercials are also something that people watch to judge which commercial is the funniest or which commercial was the best. Whether you are a diehard football fan competing for fantasy football money, someone who loves a good laugh from the commercials, or a kid mesmerized by seeing really good athletes to be just like them when they grow up, this Super Bowl did it all. Ultimately, I think the Super Bowl is something that everyone can have a good time watching, and serves as a great way to get together and have a good time with friends and family.
Nuha Hussain (Glenbard West High School)
The hate that followed this years Super Bowl performance shocked me. Outrage was sparked by parents stating the super bowl is a family show, and the half time show was less than appropriate in the given circumstances. I believe the hate stemmed from a place of sexism rather than a place of family protection. In many cases previous Super Bowl halftime shows have been just as adult, just in different ways. I think the perceived over sexualisation of the performance was actually the problem.
Zoë Mical (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn IL)
I am not quite a football fan, I often find myself watching events such as the Super Bowl for the commercials and the halftime show, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching the game as the score gets tense. My family on the other hand, loves to watch the annual game. I did not really know anything about either team or how the game world, so I kept my focus on things such as the commercials and the halftime show. I find it funny how much I look forward to see the commercials at the game, whereas any other time I would be highly against seeing the commercials, as it disrupts whatever I may be watching. Then it came to the halftime show. Growing up I was an really big fan of the show “The Voice”, especially the season Shakira was on, so seeing that she would be performing was a bit of childhood nostalgia for me. As as there is just about every year, some joke is made out of the halftime show. This year, it happens to be Shakira gobbling like a turkey right in front of the camera. It was very amusing to people like my younger brothers, and to social media. But in legitimacy, there always will be some sort of joke made out of the halftime show, which I always find entertaining.
Emma Dunne (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@Zoë Mical I do the same thing as I am not a big football fan but I watch the commercials and halfime show. I also have a love for Shakira and the show the Voice and I found interesting the acts that she decided to do. The jokes that come from the show are funny but are not always kind. I think you just have to take them with a grain of salt and just laugh along side the jokes.
Alexander Jacaruso (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I am an avid NFL fan when Patrick Mahomes came into the league last year and did what he did I was more than happy to see the sport evolving. After the chiefs came back in the AFC championship after being down 21 I was immediately drawn into the Super Bowl. Could the chiefs really beat the Niners? Once the sunday finally came I had already looked at all the stats I could of all the players. I knew what seemed like all the offenses plays and defensive coverage's they had in the book. But I knew each team would have tricks up their sleeve. When the game came to the 4th quarter I thought all hope was lost for the Chiefs being down 10 and hadn’t scored since before the half I was scared for the Chiefs. I remember sitting on my couch just telling them to let Tyreek Hill (the chiefs star receiver) just run as fast as he could down the field because no one can match his speed. That’s exactly what they did and it allowed them to win the game.
Fernando Fuentes (Los Angeles, California)
@Alexander Jacaruso I personally am a diehard 49er fan. It was absolutely heart breaking watching us lose another Super Bowl in a row but I must give credit to The Chiefs amazing offense for coming back. I noticed that after the 3rd quarter your offensive coordinator started to realize the gaps and holes the 49er defense left out and he took advantage of it. One call I didn’t agree with that night was the one in which George Kittle was charged with an offensive PI. I felt that he was only defending himself and that was a crucial call that was a possible touchdown. Ultimately it came down to the coaching I was very frustrated seeing our HC Kyle Shanahan decide to throw a lot more in this game when running the ball had worked all season. If he would have stuck to a simple running game plan in which he rarely passes the outcome of the Super Bowl may have been different.
Ryan Boaz (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Even though I wouldn’t consider myself a football expert, I usually invest my time into tracking the teams throughout the season and I love to watch the best fight it out in the Super Bowl. I was happy to finally see the Chiefs make it to the big game, although they aren’t my number one team. Having seen the Chiefs struggle these last couple of years, it was great to see them finally win. The commercials this year were disappointing. I can’t remember laughing at a single one, and there was no “puppy monkey baby” like character that everyone was talking about a few years ago. I feel the companies have to be especially careful in the “political correct” world we live in now, and they fear that anything slightly offensive could lead to backlash and the cancel-culture finding their next victim. It’s disappointing because many people watch the Super Bowl just for the commercials, and this p.c climate ruins entertainment. Watching the halftime show was everything but being politically correct. It was definitely one of the most provocative shows I’ve seen in my years of watching, and the strip pole was an…..interesting touch. I don’t think the show was nearly as inappropriate as some in the media make it out to be, but with such a diverse audience they could have done less. Many children are watching the game, and I don’t think many parents appreciated Jennifer Lopez showing off her moves on the strip pole. Regardless, this year was definitely a year we won’t forget!
Ella Shynett (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
The Super Bowl has been an event that glues many people from different walks to their TVs. The attraction of a good old American ball game is why it has garnered the popularity that it has now. Even people, like me, who couldn't tell you the first thing about football are excited when the time comes around. Whether it's the game, the halftime shows, or the commercials, it's an American tradition that won't be dying out anytime soon. When I saw that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were set to perform at the halftime show, I was indifferent about it. I think Shakira is an amazing performer but I don't pay a lot of attention to her, and I don't like J-lo all that much. But, after I watched the performance I definitely could say that it was explosive. All the bright lights and shiny costumes, I couldn't tear my eyes away from it. I thought the expression of Latinx pride and the way they incorporated their culture was so beautiful to see, and I realized that even though I'm not really a fan of either of them that this was probably really important to a lot of Latinx people during this time where immigrants from Latin countries are being branded as "criminals". I think this halftime show was a perfect mix of showing off Latinx pride while calling to attention the dangerous amount of xenophobia these immigrants have been facing these past few years. While this halftime show might fade from some of our memories, it thoroughly resonated with Latinx people to remember it for a long time.
Reid Barden (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I thought the actual football game was great! Most people thought that the game was over when San Francisco took the lead by 10 points, However the Chiefs were able to put together an awesome comeback and come out with the win in the end. I personally did not think the halftime show was very good, I noticed that at least one of the songs was performed in spanish, I don't think this was the right move because english is the official language of the united states. The game is being played between two teams that are based in the United States, the game itself was played in the United states, and the whole entire National Football league only encompasses teams from the United States. If the game was played somewhere where the official language was spanish then fine, but according to a survey done in 2015 only 13% of the US can speak spanish. Why would we perform a song that only 13% of the population can understand? I don't really understand the reasoning behind that but I also don’t understand why the artists have to use their body so much to make it a good show. Take Michael Jackson for example, he delivered one of the best super bowl halftime shows of all time. Did you see him half naked on the stage trying to get attention? He used his musical talent to please the viewers, not his body. I think people nominated for the halftime show should quit trying to make political statements and just try to make it a decent performance.
Kaitlyn Conoscenti (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Every year I get together to watch the Super Bowl with my friends and family. When I was younger I never really paid attention to the game at all, but now I really enjoy watching the game, commercials, and the halftime show. I was hoping the 49ers would win the game, but I really didn’t care because I was just happy that the Patriots weren’t in the game this year, and overall I was just looking forward to a good game. Watching the game was very entertaining and it was very surprising to see the Chiefs make a comeback to win the game. For those who don’t enjoy watching the actual game , there are always the commercials and the halftime show. I personally enjoyed the commercials, but I did think the previous year’s commercials were better. I also think that the halftime show performance by Jenifer Lopez and Shakira was great. Overall, I think that the Super Bowl is a great occasion for friends and family to come together and watch a great game.
Kendall Hermanson (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
For me, the best part of the Super Bowl was the half-time show--Shakira and Jennifer Lopez! The duo performed separate numbers, filled with sparkly costumes and high energy, and then came together at the end to sing one last song--a tribute to the United States and its citizens. However, as amazing as the half-time show was, I couldn't avoid noticing all of the criticism the two women were receiving. They were being put down for their outfits and dancing, with various news companies publishing that their performance was objectifying, and even going as far to say that it was "a step back for women". This is appalling; why are we criticizing the way these two amazing women choose to perform? We should be lifting them up, not pushing them down. In my opinion, their performances were inspiring; they showed young girls that they can be bold, confident, and unapologetic, not having to worry about how something as frivolous as their appearance will make others perceive them. Also, it is important to highlight the choir, a group of young girls, including JLO's daughter, that performed on the stage. The fact that these girls were included in the performance shows how important it is to JLO and Shakira that young women have the opportunity to shine and grow.
Alexander Jacaruso (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Kendall Hermanson this could not have been more well said. I agree with everything you said. The halftime show wasn't "objectifying" it was great it did what a halftime should-get you pumped for the second half. The game itself was way better than last year so maybe critics just want to find something to hate on and the halftime show is easy to make look bad.
Chloe Scatton-Tessier (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Fifty four years. That's fifty four Super Bowl games, fifty four family gathering, and fifty four winning teams. This year the Kansas City Chiefs took the winning title and every player gained a large ring to remember it. The past fifty years and countless ours of practice payed off, not just for the Chiefs but for the state of Missouri. This game is one for the books. This game was nostalgic along with the commercials. Just like Tiffany Hsu wrote in her article, the advertisement for mountain dew brought back the famous scenes from the Shining. The well known "here's JOHNNY" snapshot was portrayed wit a bottle of Mountain Dew instead of an axe. My mom found it entertaining that Kubrick's work was still gaining popularity. The commercials were a great part of the Super Bowl but the Half-time show lived up to it's expectations. This years show included J-Lo and Shakira dancing to songs from the past decade and matching gold and silver outfits. This years performance was one of the best in my opinion for it was both in English and Spanish along with great choreography and multiple costume changes. The whole show was tied together with each of the artist's references which included Shakira's red dress from her movie Zootopia and Jennifer's dramatic dancing which referenced to her movie Hustlers. February 7, 2021. That's the date we have to wait until to watch our favorite teams test their skills and the next big artist gets to express themselves on stage. Until next year.
Ava Espinoza (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
The Super Bowl has become much more than just a football game. New commercials, celebrity appearances, and even the Puppy Bowl, have overrun the game. But the halftime show is something that most American’s gather around to see, even if they aren’t fans of the sport. Since they announced that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira would perform at the Super Bowl in September, I had been counting down the days till it’s arrival. The performance exceeded my expectations, and has me currently listening to both the artists. But the event also resurfaced in my mind, as I watched our president address the State of the Union. Jon Pareles statement in the article is entirely true, specifically his point on how the show was used as a political statement on immigration. Prior to the speech, the halftime show included glowing cages with Lopez’s daughter, resembling the trouble at the border. Lopez’s daughter sang Bruce Springstein’s “Born in the USA” while her mother was draped in both the Puerto Rican and American flag. The president’s speech consisted of no effort to bring the country together. Any illegal immigrant despite age, or gender is considered a criminal in the president's eyes. Therefore the events and silent statements shown in the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show presented more hope for the future of the country, and will have a greater and lasting effect on the nation than the State of the Union.
Natalia Rivera (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
@Ava Espinoza I'm not a fan of sports, so the super bowl doesn't catch my interest. When it comes to the halftime shows, I usually only watch when an artist I like is going to perform. This years performer were Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, both performers that I essentially grew up listening to. Knowing the two of them I knew their performance was going to resemble something like a festival. I got what I expected but I was also incredibly surprised. Their performance was so true to their origins that for a second I forgot I was watching the halftime to a famous American sports event. It's nice to see performers be true to themselves and not be restricted by American expectations. Shakira especially never seemed to stop smiling, it's easy to forget that she and Jennifer Lopez are both over forty. The Puerto Rican Flag surprised me, and I was confused when my parents said that people were going to be dramatic about it. And sure enough they did, people started complaining about putting a Puerto Rican flag in an American show, which is a ridiculous complaint seeing as Puerto Rico is very much a part of America. When performers belonging to a different culture perform in America, many tend to tone down their individuality to meet American standards. Because they know success in America is basically success worldwide. And I think it's sad that some performers do that. The music and performances that other cultures can bring add some much needed variety in our musical world.
Reid Barden (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@Ava Espinoza I don't understand why an illegal immigrant would not be considered a criminal, the word illegal is literally in the name. Why would someone be treated differently because of their age or gender? If a person illegally breaks into this country they deserve to pay the consequences no matter what their age or gender is. We do want equality right? If so why would we give people who committed the same crime different sentences because of their age or gender?
Nathan Hackney (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ava Espinoza I am going to have to kindly disagree with you on somethings here. First off, I really think it is empowering to put two extremely influential Latino women on the half-time stage at the same time and I see how that is a proud moment for you. (Although I think we can both agree that the lack of coverage was a little dumbfounding) However, I must disagree with your take on J-Lo being draped in the Puerto Rican and American Flag. There is no revolutionary idea here. Although It may have jogged some Representatives mind, Native born Puerto Rican citizens are granted full citizenship as if they were born in the proper United States. This means this display is no different than me wearing an American Flag and a North Carolina Flag. Also, despite this being seen as racist, I believe ILLEGAL citizens, despite ethnicity, gender, or age are criminals. The definition of the word criminal is a person who has committed a crime (according to Oxford Dictionary) and the definition of crime is an illegal activity. Therefore Illegal crossing of a border (by any race) is a crime and that person is therefore a criminal. I really don't mean to be racist in this response, I really do love and respect people despite things as shallow as skin color, so I hope you will take my opinion not as one of attack but of conversation.
Kevin O’Malley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
I watch football throughout the whole season and am always tracking the biggest games. The Super Bowl is the biggest moment of the whole football year, and the suspense building up to this game was huge. These were two outstanding teams with each having cases for why they could win. Like every year, I settled down with my family, helped prepare the snacks, and got excited for the game. Overall, the Super Bowl this year was fantastic. This game was exciting from start to finish with lead changes throughout. Near the end I thought it was over when the Chiefs were down 20-10, but was pleasantly surprised when they came back to win it, and even more happy when I won the family bet of eighty dollars by guessing a score only one point off the actual one. The other things that come with the game were just ok. The halftime show was interesting to say the least. Overall, I thought that the performances were very good. I liked the idea of Latino pride, but honestly didn't enjoy all of the Spanish songs because I didn't know or understand some of them. The one thing I thought was bad was the amount of "sexiness" they were involved in their performances. These women are 50 and 41 and honestly should not be doing those "dance moves' ' in front of everyone in the country. Also, the commercials were very underimpressing. I don't think I can recall one good one from Sunday and have noticed a huge difference in the quality and humor that the commercials usually have.
Ava Espinoza (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Kevin O’Malley I completely disagree, with your ending paragraph which criticized the halftime show, based on the performers age. If it was a man doing the same, only praise would be given. Who is to decide whether someone can or cannot dance? Who decided the age limit on the ability to dance publicly? The halftime show is a celebration, and this year the performers celebrated everyone. These “dances moves” that were performed consisted of the Champeta which is traditional to Colombia. Shakira also belly danced which is traditional to the Middle east. These “dance moves” represented a wide variety of people and cultures across the U.S. in the Super Bowl. Next time just turn the TV off if it is too sexy or the people performing are too old for you.
Kevin O’Malley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
@Ava Espinoza I respectfully disagree with how you have understood my opinions. I understand that many of the things done during the halftime show were cultural and meant to celebrate those cultures in the US. Also, I can understand your point of defending them for their age, because as I see it, age is just a number for some people and I do think that I shouldn't have used that as a point against the halftime show. However, I think there is a lot of things that you cannot justify behind the curtain of their cultures. For one thing, please explain how a strip pole fits into Middle East or Columbia culture. Or what about the outfits they wore, while maybe the styles might be of that culture, I think that how reveling they are is unneeded to show that. I would like to request that you watch it again and tell me that there is not a lot of things in there that flirt with what is acceptable for family entertainment.

Yes, the super bowl: a surplus of snacks, pizza, soda, friends and family. The game, halftime show, and the commercials are always a hit for the 100 million plus viewers. Now although I really enjoyed all of what the super bowl had to offer, especially the Jeep commercial, I really think that the platform that the super bowl has cultivated could ultimately be used for something more, more than just a robot with a beer something motivational. Families and friends are all paying attention, together. This is the perfect time to instead address issues or bring about public service announcements that can either be beneficial to the people to hear or leave a thought that can make an impact and further more ignite a spark for important discussions. Let me emphasize this, I love the super bowl and what it offers! But what if the super bowl could be used to make the world a better place, and bring about change, and have people talk about the real important issues in the world?
Gavin (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn IL)
I am a huge football fan and I tend to get together with my friends and family for every super bowl, so for me this was just another super bowl, personally up until about the middle of the 4th quarter the game just did not feel like a super bowl, it was a weird feeling despite it being a pretty good game, and maybe it was just because it wasn’t the usually patriots vs. the world game. Whatever it was the game just felt like it was a regular season game to me until about half way through the fourth quarter. When the chiefs began to mount their comeback, maybe it was just due to me being bias and wanting the chiefs to win, but I still felt like I would have been happy had the 49ers won. I’m really not sure though I had a great time and enjoyed watching the game with my friends and I was happy Mahomes got his first ring. To me this super bowl was not one for the ages, but one that will come and go just like many other Super Bowls in the past.
Elle S (Glenbard West High School, IL)
Typically I just stay home and watch the Super Bowl with my family but don’t actually watch the game. I pay more attention to the commercials and halftime show than the actual football part. This year however, I watched it with a bunch of friends. I payed more attention to the game this time because everyone got really into it. I personally didn’t care who won but I enjoyed seeing everyone getting competitive. I thought the commercials were pretty good this year too. The halftime show with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez was entertaining as well so overall it was a good experience.
MS (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
I love watching the Super Bowl halftime performances. For me it's the most entertaining part to watch. This year I only watched the first half of the game and then the halftime show and I loved it. It was very entertaining as I love watching performances like that. One thing that i actually enjoyed other than halftime was how the Chiefs won. I think they deserved it as they have never won and it was nice to see the underdogs succeed.
Klaudia Czepiel (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn Illinois)
Honestly, this year was the first year I actually paid attention to the game during the Super Bowl. Every year my family does something casual like invite some friends and family over and we all watch it together, but I mainly come for the halftime show and the commercials. This year my friends and I all watched it together after eating pizza and mac and cheese—some classic Super Bowl food. I don’t really follow football so I didn’t really care who won, but I do have to say the game was really interesting to watch. It was awesome watching the Chiefs come back from a 10 point deficit, but I know Mahomes and what an amazing quarterback he is—so it wasn’t very surprising. The halftime show was also amazing. You could tell Shakira and Jennifer Lopez really enjoyed performing together and put their all into the performance, which made it even better to watch. Overall, I’d say this year's Super Bowl was a success, besides some boring commercials that couldn’t even compete with last years.
Mollie Brinker (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Klaudia Czepiel I agree with you that it’s not really important who wins the game. The superbowl, for me at least, is a social event. I look forward to it every year because our family has a tradition of going to our old friend’s house and watching it with them and a couple other families. This year I didn’t really watch it, I just went upstairs with my friends and ate food. Normally the only thing I really enjoy watching is the half-time show. The artists are so passionate and talented. I loved Beyonce’s performance in 2013 and remember sitting on the same couch with the same people 7 years ago watching at half-time.
Akash Patel (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I am a chiefs fan, and I had work on the day of the Super Bowl, and being a chiefs fan their was no way I was going to miss it. So I watched half of it on the computer at work, and then watched the other half at home as my shift was over. Being a Chiefs fan, and taking in the out come, it’s clear I have some bias, but this was the best Super Bowl I’ve ever watched next to the Pats vs Seahawks in 2015. Compared to last years lack luster Super Bowl, this year it just felt extremely refreshing as it was an exciting game with a great halftime show as well. I was ecstatic when we won, the fourth quarter was insane. Mahomes had a clutch lead-taking drive at the end finding Tyreek and Kelce for big plays. And when we got the stop and Williams took it all the way for 6, it was some of the most joy I have ever felt. We then proceeded to get the pick to put the cherry on top. It was just a perfect sequence, that I’m pretty sure got everyone out of their seats, except Niners fans! But I definitely believe this was an amazing Super Bowl, and I say that with as little bias as possible, as the past years have been lacking in halftime performances and excitement in general. The Miami setting was also very cool, I mean who doesn't want to be in Miami watching a Super Bowl!
Zach (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Last weekend I watched the super at my friends house, half rooting for the chiefs and the other half- me included- for the 49ers. Even though both teams were very good, in my eyes the 49ers were the underdogs, and I always cheer for the underdog. There has been so much hype around the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes this year making me in a way want them to lose. Regardless, as the game progressed it was looking like the 49ers had this one, but a late surge by the Chiefs allowed them to gain the late lead and secure the win. Since I don’t truly cheer for either team year round, I was fine with this result. It was a close game that came down to the fourth quarter, and both teams had super talented players. I’m happy that Mahomes won a Super Bowl, allowing him to start building his case for being one of the greats, as well as the Chiefs coach who had been in the league for years without a Super Bowl.
Cody Paul (Glenbard West High School Glen Ellyn, IL)
Every year I watch the Super Bowl, and every year my family comes together for a Super Bowl party. This year was no different as I watched the entire game, all the commercials and the halftime show. This year I was hoping the Chiefs would win the game, but most of all I wanted it to be a good, exciting game. Last years game was boring between the Rams and the Patriots. I was pleased with the outcome and the entire game. The battle between the two teams was very entertaining, especially as the Chiefs made a comeback to win the game. Not only is the game itself a huge part of the Super Bowl for me, but watching the commercials and the halftime show. I enjoyed the commercials this year, but past years have had better ones. My family constantly laughs at the commercials and it is apart of the culture of the Super Bowl that makes it great. The halftime show was very good this year, not only was the performance amazing, but seeing my little cousins dance to the music was hysterical. Overall, the Super Bowl is one of my favorite days of the year, for not only the entertainment of the game, commercials and the halftime show, but getting together with family. This year was no different, and I’m glad the game was so good, and that I had a good time with my family.
Neev O’Neill (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn IL)
I can’t imagine not watching the Super Bowl with my family every year. It has been tradition every year since my brother and I could understand what we were watching; and honestly even before. My dad, being a football player all through his life and even into college, didn’t really give us a choice. While he, my mom, and my brother love the competition of the game, I much prefer finding recipes on Pinterest for food to make and anxiously waiting until halftime so I can watch and critique the show. Even though I’m not a huge football fan, I still find joy in watching it because it’s tradition. I was happy for the Chiefs because they hadn’t won in 50 years but honestly, as long as there’s good commercials to watch, food to eat, and people to be around, I consider it a win.
Noe Rodriguez (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn IL)
This year I watched a majority of the super bowl. Having been at work on the Sunday it took place, I missed a good portion of the first half (though I was watching it on my phone while at work). But as soon as I got off work, I made it home quick in order to make it home before the second half has begun. I got home during the middle of the halftime performance and I didn’t think very much about it other than that it was very celebratory of Hispanic culture. Though I don’t necessarily see why there is controversy over the performance, I still feel it was a good performance given by a very group of talented people. And after having watched the rest of the game, I can confidently say I was entertained by the comeback the Kansas City Chiefs had made during the second half having had a rough first half. Though I didn’t really have a preferred team in mind to win, overall I thought the super bowl was a great game this year and I enjoyed seeing two great times go head to head.
Morgan Clifford (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I watched the Super bowl this year but not a lot of it because the Super Bowl for our family is just another way to come together and have a big party. I was spending most of my time talking with my family. I believe that this is what many other families do as well. The Super Bowl brings so many families and friends together for one big party with a bunch of food. Although I only got to watch part of the Super Bowl, I noticed that there were not as many comical commercials like the previous years, in my opinion. I noticed that when I came to school the next day no one was really talking about their favorite commercial they saw like they usually do. A lot of them seemed to be just like normal commercials that you would see on any other channels. Therefore, I was a little disappointed with the commercials. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the halftime show. I thought both Jennifer and Shakira did a great job keeping the whole show interesting. I know that a lot of people who are not into the Super Bowl are drawn to it with the halftime show, so the halftime show is a big deal. The halftime show helps the Super Bowl expand their audience making the Super Bowl even more valuable.
Izzy Williams (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
For the past couple of Super Bowls I have either hung out with my friends or with my family, enjoyed the commercials and the game, eaten wings, and placed a few half-hearted bets here and there. This year I gathered with some family and watched the game and this year was by far the most I have been active in a super bowl for all the years I’ve watched them. I went into the game with a clear picture of who I wanted to win and how they would win. I had a feeling that somehow it would come down to the last few minutes of the game and the game would be won within the last 3 minutes. My prediction ended up being somewhat correct, the chiefs came back with only a few minutes remaining in the game and it was an extremely nerve racking experience. While I may not be the most avid football fan, I enjoyed watching the game and seeing that every second, minute, and play really do count in games like the super bowl .
Christian Cammack (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
I watched almost all of the Super Bowl this year. I always go to a party for the Super Bowl and this year I had to drive home before nine so I missed some of the third quarter. But this Super Bowl honestly wasn't as entertaining to me as others. I'm a Falcons fan and we went to the Super Bowl about three years ago. Even though we lost (pretty bad) that was my personal favorite Super Bowl I've ever seen. This definitely has something to do with me being a fan of one of the participating teams but ever since then I just feel like they've been getting more boring. The game itself was really fun to watch this year. I wasn't really rooting for either team but that was an awesome to watch comeback. The halftime show and commercials on the other hand just weren't as great as previous years in my opinion. There were a few commercials I enjoyed but nothing that stuck with me the next day like they used to. The halftime show was good and the singers were great and I enjoyed how Shakira and Jennifer Lopez represented Latinos in it. But overall the only halftime show that I can still remember is the Katy Perry halftime show. It was so amazing and I just wish they would try to be a little more extravagant with it.
Daniel Guy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I watch the Super Bowl every year with my family and friends. Me and my family go over to our friends house every year and have a party. Usually I don’t watch the whole super bowl but every now and then I’ll start to watch it again to see who is winning. The best part in my opinion was the fourth quarter. The Chiefs were losing by 10 and in 5 minutes they managed to score 3 touchdowns and 3 field goals putting the score to 31-20 with the Chiefs winning.. At that point the 49ers were falling apart and I knew that the Chiefs had won for the first time in 50 years. I am happy about the Super Bowl this year and am glad that the Patriots didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this year.
Danny Vesevick (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn IL)
Every year I gather with my friends to watch the super bowl. We bring snacks and throw a party to watch the game, the cool and funny commercials, and enjoy the halftime show where whoever is performing. This year I was particularly interested in the super bowl because of the Kansas City chiefs, they made the super bowl and won it for the first time in 50 years. Not that I am saying I am happy the the chiefs came out victorious but it is truly something special. I was very excited to see the 49ers taking over the game late in the 4th quarter but I knew it was not over. Overall it was a very good game. I love watching football and I love hanging out with friends so I usually look forward to the super bowl every year, and it is always a good time.
Daniel Guy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Danny Vesevick I am also happy about the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl because it was their first win in 50 years and I don't like the 49ers anyway.
Jenna Jacob (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
The super bowl is an exciting Sunday that brings together family and friends to watch awesome football teams compete. This is the day where commercials are actually fun to watch. For me, when I get more food I get up during the game parts and sit during the commercial parts because there are usually replays of the game but it’s hard to get a replay of the commercials. The halftime show isn’t really the best part in my opinion but I think each year it is unique and a lot of work goes into it. I didn’t want a specific outcome for the but I think it’s a nice opportunity to bring everyone together.
Nick E. (Glenbard West Highschool)
I was a resident of Lee’s Summit (Kansas City suburb) Missouri for 17 years, and I grew up watching the chiefs play. Up until about the last three or is years it has been fairly painful as the chiefs have struggled a lot and the patriots dynasty took over the AFC. 3 years ago the Chiefs made it to the playoffs and lost in the wildcard round, which was considered a really decent year for our franchise. Then we entered the draft. We traded our pick up to the 10th spot in the draft and for sure I thought we were taking Deshaun Watson (QB Clemson), who had just come off a national championship victory. Then as I heard them call the name “Patrick Mahomes,” I was immediately dumbfounded. I had never heard of the guy. Little did I know how much he was going to turn our franchise around. Not only was he the 2019 league MVP, he led 3 playoff comebacks of all deficits of 10+ points to win the Super Bowl this year. Patrick Mahomes is a full on leader in his 3rd year in the league, and has already set so many outstanding records for the chiefs franchise. As you can tell I’m fairly happy with how the super bowl faired.
Ryan N (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Illinois)
I watched the Super Bowl this year, only 30 seconds of it. I watched the 30 seconds during the 2nd quarter or inning of the game. I feel as if every year the Super Bowl goes on, more and more interest in the event starts to lose its steam, which can describe about every holiday celebrated these past few years. I’d even go far to say lots of people didn’t watch this year’s Super Bowl is because their favorite teams haven’t made it to the winner’s stage. These past couple of years the Patriots seem to always be headlining the Super Bowl but it seems they didn’t make it this year. While it is one of the biggest sport events, it doesn’t resonate with me or my family anymore. The only thing fascinating to come out of the Super Bowl is Shakira’s performance. Football in general is boring to me and is not gaining more fans or support but is losing.
Cooper (Hoggard High School)
I watch the Super Bowl every single year. I always go over to one of my friends house and we have a Super Bowl party which has become a tradition for us. I was excited for this years Super Bowl because the Packers (my favorite team) had a chance to be in it for the first time in awhile. Unfortunately, the Packers lost to San Francisco in the NFC Championship. This made me want the Chiefs to win the big game so I was happy with the end result. Kansas City winning was a surprise especially after they went down by two possessions in the 4th quarter. Personally, I liked the halftime show. It was not as entertaining as past shows. However, I think Jennifer Lopez is one of the finest human beings to ever exist, so seeing her perform was cool. I don't care about commercials or ads but I love watching football. Even if the Packers didn't make it, I was glad to see the Patriots avoid the Super Bowl as well.
Jonathan (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Before I really got into watching football, the super bowl ads were always my favorite to watch. i think they are always well thought up and enjoyable for everyone to watch. Being from Chicago and a fan of the bears, our season has been over for awhile and when the playoff bracket had came out, I had the Chiefs and the Saints in the super bowl. Regardless that it was 49ers instead of the Saints, I thought it was still a good game with Patty making a comeback. Again. I was just happy not to see the Patriots in a super bowl.
Jessica Buron (Middletown, NJ)
I did watch the Super Bowl this year, and my favorite part was the halftime show. The commercials I feel aren't nearly as funny and entertaining as they were, so that aspect I have come to not enjoy. The game itself was also very intriguing to watch, as both teams played really well and the upset at the end was so fantastic.
Christian Cammack (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
@Jessica Buron I agree with the commercials. I used to laugh so hard at them and would go to school the next day and everyone would be talking about them and it was so fun. I don't really know if it's just because I'm older now, but they just don't have that same feeling with me anymore. I mean I still liked some of them this year but not even one stood out that if you asked me about it in a few days I would remember. Meanwhile Super Bowls from years ago had hilarious commercials like my favorite that I still remember "Puppy Monkey Baby". I just think they should try to go back to their roots and shoot for comedy more.
Francisco Aguilar (Orlando, Florida)
I did watch Superbowl 54 on February 2nd, 2020. I believe that there were questionable calls made, or not made, against the San Francisco 49ers. For example, during the 49ers last drive with the lead, on 3rd and 10, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, Emmanuel Sanders, was held back, preventing him from catching the ball to make it first and ten or probably another touchdown for the 49ers. The contact was clear pass interference, but the play was waved off, forcing the 49ers to punt the ball, causing the Chiefs to lead on the charge for the lead in the game. Even though the Chiefs had all of the momentum in the fourth quarter, I still believe that if the pass interference call was made like it was supposed to have happened, the 49ers would have gone all the way for the touchdown, and would have won the game entirely.
Sara (New Jersey)
Having not watched the Super Bowl, I cannot comment on the event itself from this year. (I don't even know who played in the game). I am not a huge follower of sports to begin with, so it makes sense that I just found out it was happening the night before. However, that being said, the Super Bowl is an event which brings family and friends together for a night of fun and celebration. As long as the partying and betting does not get out of hand, and people are enjoying themselves safely, it is a positive event people look forward to which the American culture readily accepts.
Ally (Middletown, NJ)
I think the Superbowl becomes less interesting as the years go on. It becomes more of a publicity stunt rather than an actual game, and is only useful for the merchandise instead of watching the actual game. The half time shows are usually good, yet become more elaborate every year. I feel like it is unnecessary and should be valued purely for the quality of the game and performance rather than the spectacle.
Cooper (Hoggard High School)
@Ally I see your point but NFL fans love the Super Bowl and it is necessary to determine a championship. I think the halftime shows get less elaborate each year. Five years ago, Katy Perry rode onto the field on a giant shark and last Sunday all we saw was a concert.
Julian V. (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
In this year’s super bowl I wasn’t as active and as excited to watch the game compared to previous years. I wanted the 49ers to win mainly because I didn’t want to see Kansas City win, but overall I didn’t care at all who won this years super bowl. I really enjoyed how the match up was even which lead to a great game, but the first half was just kinda boring to me. Not a whole lot of scoring from either side. Usually I would watch the whole game but this year I would watch and stop watching during different parts of the game. I wasn’t surprised that Mahomes and the chiefs made that comeback, Mahomes wasn’t playing great up until that point so I was expecting him to start completing passes sooner or later. I enjoyed most of the commercials and the halftime show, but overall I was just happy that it was a Super Bowl without the New England Patriots.
Soka S (Glenbard west HS)
The Super Bowl was very interesting for me this year. None of my favorite teams were playing this year so I has to make a choice just like any other year. My prediction was the San Francisco 49ers would take the trophy but things didn’t go as planned. At first I thought this was gonna be a sure win for the 49ers after then 10 point lead, but after awhile I got a little nervous. Of course both of these teams are elite as shown by making the Super Bowl, but I never really thought the Chiefs were that good.
Pat Cole (Glenbard West)
The super bowl is one of the biggest sports event in the world , each year two of the top two teams in the NFL face off to battle for the Lombardi Trophy. Going into the game I was unbiased and did not care who won the game, I just hoped to see a close and competitive game. For the most part, this game had some big plays and was pretty entertaining to watch. I was happy that the chiefs won because a comeback took place, the 49ers were up by 10 at the end of the third quarter and ended up loosing 20-31. I was not surprised by the outcome of this game because the chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, he was last years MVP and has now won a Super Bowl at the age of 24 so a comeback did not shock me. The Super Bowl is also known to be such a big event because there are other festivities such as the commercials that are usually more funny then an everyday commercial and the halftime show that has popular artists preform .
Kristy Daly (Middletown, NJ)
I did not really watch the superbowl, but I was excited that the cheifs have won. It was such an exciting ending that the Cheifs pulled it out towards the end. There had been a lot of different comments on Shakira's halftime show. Some people thought it might have been inappropriate and others could have really enjoyed it. Also, I thought it was interesting how much money it was to have a spot for a commercial in the superbowl. Yes, superbowl commercials are some of the funniest, most comedic commercials of all time. Sadly I did not watch much of the superbowl so I can't say much. But I feel like the superbowl ads will come back in the mean time.
Joel (Glenbard west)
I’ll be honest, I’m not really a big fan coming to America football. But when Shakira and Jennifer Lopez were going to be there that really surprised me. I never thought in America football they would let other heritages sing in the Super Bowl. I think the show was great, it was great message to over one that everyone even latina can make it into the Super Bowl. They really made big step for Latin communities for many others.
Olivia Tank (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Different aspects of the Super Bowl draw me in from year to year depending on the teams playing, the performers, and whatever party or gathering of some sort I may be attending. A constant factor that draws me to the iconic game every year is the amazing commercials. This year, I was particularly drawn to the Super Bowl because of the performers. I believe Shakira and Jennifer Lopez walked the line of a fun and entertaining halftime show and a show with a message perfectly. I thought it was very empowering to see two women of Latina descent showing their pride for the heritage. I am glad that they chose to use such a huge platform to express a point that they wished to support. As for the ad campaigns, the Google commercial stands out in my mind as I write this. I am sure I saw many other commercials that had me laughing out loud and rewinding multiple times, but Google’s ad is the first one that popped into my head and really the only one that I can remember in full. Google really hit home with a sweet sentiment, remembering our loved ones. The vast majority of Americans have an elderly relative that they can either subconsciously or consciously link this commercial to. I think this ad was as successful as it was because of its relatability and the message that will stick with us beyond the end of the game. Even though I wasn’t particularly watching the game for the teams, I still thoroughly enjoyed the Super Bowl and everything that came with it this year.
Sadie Dunne (Hoggard High school in Wilmington, NC)
@Olivia Tank Normally, I don't root for one particular team because I'm not super interested in football, but this year one of my favorite teams, the 49ers played. Although they didn't win, I agree with you, watching the super bowl and everything that comes with it is still really enjoyable. I loved Jennifer Lopez's and Shakira's performance as well, I was so amazed at how they brought such talent to the stage for such a wonderful cause. Incorporating all cultures, especially one's that are underrepresented into the spotlight is quite amazing. Watching the super bowl commercials can sometimes be boring, but I also got a chance to see the Google commercial and it touched my heart for sure. I think that a commercial that means something and holds sentiment behind it, makes it stand out and makes it even more special. A huge audience across America watches the super bowl, so I feel that having meaningful commercials and a meaningful halftime that we can all relate to is wonderful.
AH (J.R. Masterman)
I usually do not watch the Super Bowl nor do I find it entertaining. I have only watched most of one Super Bowl when my home-town team, the Eagles, won. Growing up in a mostly tennis loving family, I never enjoyed American football or understood people’s connection to it. I see football as just a group of men chasing a ball around a field, which I find quite unentertaining. But, at the same time, a big event like the Super Bowl brings many different types of people together that share a similar goal. This plays a big role in American society by being a sport that unifies people from different backgrounds and cultures. The only part of the Super Bowl I watched was this year’s half-time show. I saw this as a good step towards more cultural diversity.
Praveen (Julia R. Masterman)
I think the Super Bowl was pretty good. An ad I remember that I especially liked was the one about the old man asking Google to remember things about Loretta. The halftime show was interesting, but not what I would expect. However, the choreography was great. The rebound from the Chiefs was surprising, but it was within my expectations. I think the Super Bowl is a great time for family and friends to get together and be entertained.
Jasper (J.R. Masterman)
I think that the Super Bowl is a great event because there's something for everyone. For those who like football this game is a perfect end to a long playoff season. For the musicians, the halftime show is always an amazing spectacle featuring musical sensations. Any comedy fan in the audience is sure to appreciate the humor contained in the various odd and entertaining commercials. However I think that the greatest aspect of the Super Bowl is the sense of community that it forms, because even if you don't like football you still can enjoy socializing with others.
Rebecca (Milwaukee, WI)
While I'm not a huge fan of sorts, I've always admired the Superbowl. It's a chance to unite our divided country for a night, whether you're a game watcher or just waiting for the ads and halftime show. I fall into the second category, always interested in the creative ideas people can come up with. However, while the ads were decent, I found this year's halftime show rather disturbing. Instead of admiring amazing effort and beauty, I was constantly reminded of how popular culture objectifies women. Between the nearly naked costumes and inappropriate dances (at least to the general public), I found the performance far too sexual. The show suggested that women can only be admired in their sexuality, which is a very degrading view. I hope that future halftime shows can be enjoyed by all audiences, including young people.
Ella Shynett (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Rebecca I think that if the women who are participating in this "sexual" behavior are happy and are choosing whether or not they want to wear or do things like this, then I don't think that there's a problem with it. I do agree that the public only admires women if they're sexually "pleasing" enough to society but I don't believe it applies here. I saw it as two women embracing their cultures while dancing proudly in clothing that they liked enough to perform. I don't see anything disturbing about that. J-lo and Shakira have never really been E for Everyone performers and I assume the NFL kept this in mind when asking them to perform.
Grace Robertson (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
(Part 2) As for that half-time show-- I have mixed feelings. It was definitely a fun party with bright colors, gifted dancers, and fun music that makes you want to move, but Shakira and J-Lo’s costumes! I was watching with friends and adults from church and I felt a little uncomfortable with the amount of skin shown/shaken. There was one point where Lopez was essentially pole-dancing in a sheer costume. That was a little much, I thought, especially for the people watching with younger children. There was also talk about the Latino pride demonstrated in their performance. Good for them, I guess, but as a white girl I didn’t care all too much about that; I just wanted an entertaining performance, which they gave. I would probably grade their performance a B, which is pretty good.
Priya Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
From the moment that Kansas City won the AFC championship I knew who I was rooting for. Both teams are great, but I thought that Kansas City had a better chance. I personally always love a comeback game, and that's what it was. As Benjamin Hoffman said, the Chiefs waited 50 years for this opportunity and I didn’t think that they were going to let it slip from their hands. As for the Half-Time show. In my opinion, it was definitely better than the past few. Singing their infamous songs, JLo and Shakira put on quite a show. Like the article said, it was definitely a party. I was signing along to their songs and moving my feet to the beat. But the next day I got to see many symbols that I didn’t pick up on in the show. I wasn’t that excited to see the Super Bowl this year because they weren’t teams that I really followed up on throughout the year. But at least my prediction was right.
Grace Robertson (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
(Part 1) I usually watch the Superbowl just because it’s like the biggest event in American sports. I like football, but I don’t know a ton about the NFL or the teams, and I have a hard time paying attention to 2+ hours of sports on TV unless there’s consistently good action during the game. That aside, I usually try to pay attention to the Superbowl game. This year I cannot tell you anything that happened in that game. I went to a small Superbowl party with some friends where we sat in the living room with the TV on the whole time, but I was way too distracted to care about the game. Usually, a large part of the entertainment for me is keeping an eye out for either hilarious or tear-jerking commercials, and also determining how good the half-time show is. The game tends to be secondary to those things for me. From what I saw, I would say the Jason Momoa Rocket Mortgage commercial made me laugh (or cry) the most. Other commercials that stuck out to me were the Cheetos “Can’t Touch This” one and the Google ad where an old man was talking about his deceased wife, Loretta. I was disappointed by the lack of a Budweiser puppy commercial this year.
Taryn Connolly (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I am not a big football fan myself, I didn't grow up in a house where football was watched every Sunday night. I come from a soccer family and have been playing soccer my whole life so, to be honest I don't know that much about football but I still like to take part in Super Bowl Sunday. This past Sunday night I went over to my friends house to enjoy the game with them, we were all rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs. I can't say I have an opinion on the outcome of the game because I don't understand it, but as an athlete I can tell that it was a hard fought game. Now one reason I usually like to watch the game is for the halftime show. This year the show was definitely very interesting, and it definitely wasn't what I was expecting from JLo. When you think of a football game you think of family friendly and you would hope that the entertainment during breaks would be friendly for all ages as well. This year I think as entertainers it was a bit mature for some of the audiences. Even when I went to school that next day and sat down in spanish class, my teacher talked to us about it and wanted to know our thoughts on the performance. Though I do commend them both for putting on a phenomenal show.
Anand Rajagopalan (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
It was very intense and a high scoring Super Bowl, they were both very good teams and played really well. I can’t say I am surprised because the Chiefs have faced much larger deficits in the past, and 10 points is not that bad. But I am surprised that in the 4th quarter that the San Francisco 49ers didn’t have a response to the Chiefs going on a scoring run. Patrick Mahomes has a very good arm and is very good at reading the defense and can always make good plays under pressure.
William Hudson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Anand Rajagopalan I watch the Super Bowl every year because I love football. The commercials and halftime show are just a bonus. This year, I wanted the Chiefs to win and believed that they could pull it off even when they were down ten going into the fourth quarter.. That's what the team had done the previous game against the Texans when they came back from a 24 point deficit. To think that the leader of the team, Patrick Mahomes, is only 24 years old is truly inspiring and makes fans wonder what is next for him. Even though the game was exciting, I tend to remember the weird and funny commercials. For example the Puppy-Monkey-Baby commercial was so obscene that it was unforgettable. The halftime show took me by surprise this year. With many different types of people watching, young or old, I’m not sure if the dances and costumes were appropriate for all viewers and might set a poor example for children who look up to the performers. However, I did appreciate the multilingual songs that made the performance more inclusive and reflected diversity.
Adam Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
So for me personally I hate watching football only because I’m not the one playing. I’m the type of person who likes to do, not watch. But this time I made a small exception just because I didn’t want to do my homework. At first, I wanted San Francisco to win, but then I learned that Kansas City hasn't won in over fifty years, so I cheered for them. Once the 49ers started winning I decided I should probably do my homework. Once I came back my dad and my brother had the funniest face I could have ever seen. Apparently I just missed half time and I felt glad I missed it. I actually had a pretty good time watching the football game. My favorite part was probably when I saw the Black Widow commercial. I am a huge marvel fan. When the commercial came I knew I was so excited because they were talking about the Red Room the place where Natasha Romanoff became Black Widow. Anyways after making it to the end, I was happy that my team, the underdogs some would say won and that made watching the football game worth it.
Evan Peña (Hoggard High School)
I watched the Super Bowl and I had to admit it was one of the most passionate and energetic football games I've watched in a while. The energy from not only the fans but the players as well was phenomenal and I could tell the players were ready to give their all. I watch the Super Bowl for the football and not the commercials or halftime show. I skipped the halftime show as I knew the music was bound to be horrible. Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the world, and it showed during the 4th quarter. He had the determination and grit to come back from a 10 point deficit in less than 10 minutes. Also major respect to Andy Reid, Kansas City's coach. He has been coaching for 21 years and this is his first Super Bowl. He could have easily just given up and focused on other aspects of his life, but he gave his life to football and it repaid him on the country's biggest stage.
Katherine Lennon (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
It has been a crazy ride leading up to the Super Bowl this past sunday. All I’ve heard for weeks now is what team people think will win and what halftime will be like. I knew going in that I didn’t have a strong preference to who I wanted to win although I do like to watch the NFL. I was not surprised that going into halftime we had a tied game and that the Chiefs were able to pull away in the fourth quarter. Every year I look forward to the commercials and always find a couple I like the most. I was glad to see the commercials being fun and silly which is nice to see from big companies. In my family the Super Bowl is more than just a game. It brings people together no matter what team you pull for.
Kevin Van Ek (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL.)
The Super Bowl is not only one of the biggest events, but one of the most American as well. Theirs also the commercials. The Super Bowl is know for the unique, and exuberant commercials often featuring celebrities. Personally, I thought the commercials didn’t really live up to the standard of the years before. I always remember the Doritos commercial being super weird, and something different every time. This year was pretty good, but it didn’t stand out as much as past years. The one commercial I did think was one of the best was the Cheetos one with the “Can’t touch this”. What makes this event so American though, is the food. Usually it includes wings, nachos, hot dogs, other stadium foods, which is a big part of the Super Bowl as well. The game itself this year was pretty good. The Chiefs had a nice 10 point comeback to make things more exciting.
Leonardo Gagliardi (J.R. Masterman)
For Superbowl LIV, I stayed home with my family. I was rooting for the Chiefs to win, but at the end of the game, I was neutral. This is because my mom had a chance to win 400$ in a pool where she works. I thought that was pretty cool, but she ended up not winning. I think it was awesome that the Chiefs came back from a 10-point defecit and then scored 11 more points. The halftime show, however, was very uncomfortable to watch. Especially when Shakira made that weird noise with her tongue. I did like the commercials. It was so cool to see so many celebrities, like Lil Nas X, LeBron James, and MC Hammer.
Ashlyn Barnes (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I watched the Super Bowl this year only for 2 reasons. The first was the halftime show to watch Jennifer Lopez and Shakira perform. Jennifer Lopez's daughter also sang. The second reason i watched it was for the commercials, this year in my opinion there was a lot of heart-warming commercials. To me the actual game is the most boring part.
Ayona Kuriakose (J. R. Masteran)
I watched the Super Bowl. My family is not very sporty, but every year I to watch the Super Bowl. This year's adds were very interesting. To be honest there are always these few adds from the Super Bowl you’ll remember. Like during the 2019 Super Bowl, Cardi B was in that Pepsi add. But some of this year adds almost made me cry. Like the one with the dog who survived cancer, or he googles add with the grandpa trying to remember his wife. Those just pulled at your heartstrings. Then there were the adds you’ll remember for a long time. Like the Dorritos add with Lil Nas X, the Planter add with the Kool-Aid man and Baby Nut, the Cheetos add, and my favorite, the Jason Mamoa add with Rocket Mortgage. This year’s Super Bowl commercials did not disappoint me.
Sam McNamara (John T. Hoggard High (Wilmington, NC))
I have to admit, I thought that Pat's luck would run out eventually. "You can't go down 24-0 and come back, and then go down 17-7 and come back, and then go down 20-10 and come back," I thought while watching the Super Bowl. Well, like he tends to do, Pat proved me and millions of other people who were thinking just like me wrong. I mean, it's kind of silly to have doubted him in retrospect. Mahomes was criticized for having a cannon of an arm and no accuracy when the Chiefs traded up for him in 2017 and he won MVP in 2018. People said he wasn't going to be able to put together a season like his MVP campaign, and even though he didn't win the MVP again, he still won his team a Super Bowl. I doubted he could do it in the moment, but looking back on it now, it should have been a no brainer that Patrick Mahomes would lead his team back to victory Once again, this year's Super Bowl halftime show disappointed me. I know they pick artists who appeal to a non-football audience so that they will attract additional viewers for just the halftime show, but this always creates an unsatisfying show for me. Bring out Drake, bring out Travis Scott, give us someone who appeals to us young football fans. When I watch football, it's an escape from our highly politicized society. When I see artists that don't appeal to me who are politicizing a game that should be used for entertainment, it's disappointing. Unfortunately, this year's half time show was one of many disappointing performances
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
Give them bread and a circus and they will never revolt. Football, an American past time. People line up in droves to watch the game, parties are thrown, bars are packed, and people don't pay attention to issues in the world. Everyone is so enthused with the "game" that they don't think about the election, the caucuses, or tomorrow. Players paid millions. Why? To keep them from going to another team. Well why do you want to win? Fans will always support you, you will get advertising contracts. It's ludicrous, messy, and wasteful. Football isn't a sport, it's a way to control people along with religion, music, and television. Give them bread and a circus and they will never revolt.
Henry (Masterman)
I liked the Superbowl way more than last year. It was a lot more interesting mostly because of the score at the end and the exciting comeback. When the score was 20-10 and 49ers safety Tarvarius Moore made a fourth quarter Interception, I was already saying to myself “It looks like Kansas City doesn’t have a chance at winning anymore”. Then, after a scoreless third quarter for the Chiefs, I was surprised to see them triple their score in just a few minutes. Patrick Mahomes clearly wasn’t playing his best. That was what I was thinking during the first three and a half quarters. In the end, after throwing three touchdown passes and scoring one rushing touchdown himself, he did pretty well.
Hannah Krier (Hoggard High School , Wilmington , NC)
The Super Bowl in my opinion this year was amazing. My family and I were cheering on the Cheifs as they pulled out an outstanding win against the 49ers. Even though that game was exciting the commercials this year were not. I didn't find any commercials to be eye catching or even interesting compared to past years commercials. I believe they need to step up their commercial game next year. What I enjoyed most about the super bowl was the half time show. Jlo and Shakira did and amazing job and really put on a show. All the songs they played brought back memories of childhood when I would play their songs and dance around my kitchen

The Super Bowl ads this year were pretty good, but I feel like they could’ve done better. The only ad I remember liking a little was the Cheetos ad. I don’t remember any other particular ones, but I remember one that had a bunch of people with Boston accents. The Super Bowl is an ok event, but I don’t think it needs to be quite as large as it is currently. I think America is a little too in love with football.
Adam Larson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Brycinea Stratton I agree with you people seem to go crazy over football almost like its life or death but, it's just a game.
Allison Coble (Hoggard High School)
The past week everyone kept asking who I wanted to win the super bowl, and to be honest I really wasn't sure. I watch so much high school football, being a cheerleader I had gotten too burnt out to watch it on TV. My favorite part of the super bowl is definitely halftime and the commercials. The Google commercial almost brought tears to my eyes and the Doritos one was hilarious. My parents had no idea how funny it was until they saw Billy Ray Cyrus. We had to re-watch the music video to the song “old town road” before they fully understood it. One of the most memorable halftime shows was a couple years ago when Katy Perry was singing. It was incredible how she rode out on a tiger for her iconic song “ROAR.” This year was special with JLo’s daughter singing with her, it created a very special moment for them as well as all the other children that got to sing in that song. I must admit it was hard to not dance when Shakira sang the iconic song “Waka Waka.”
Mairead Benson (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Allison Coble, I totally agree with you about the Katy Perry halftime show a few years ago! It was my favorite, but this years was definitely amazing. I honestly haven't watched the actual Super Bowl in a long time, but I did this year, and I was very pleased to see Kansas City win!
Katherine Lennon (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
@Allison Coble I agree that some of the best moments of the Super Bowl happen during the commercials and the halftime show. I watch the Super Bowl every year and I thought this game was not as exciting as games played in the past. Would you want Shakira or JLo to perform again?
Catherine Marnell (Lubbock Cooper High School, Lubbock,TX)
For me personally, the game is the most boring part. I am more of a commercial and half time show kinda girl. The commercials were pretty good for the most part. There were some really funny ones. The half time show with Shakira and JLo was really something. I think their performances were really good with their ages and ethnicities. They went out there and did a fabulous job. I love how JLo had her daughter out there to share the moment. Shakira was very enthusiastic and showed her crazy side. When JLo and Shakira both came out there together to demonstrate their culture at the end the show they really did rock the house. For some, it might have seemed like these performers were going a little too hard with kids around, but I think that with such a big event like this you have to go big. People pay big money to watch the superbowl so topping it off with an eccentric half-time performance is a very big plus.
Allison Coble (Hoggard High School)
@Catherine Marnell I agree there were some funny commercials, especially the Ellen Alexa one. I always look forward to the commercials because the companies pay so much for them they really make them memorable. I thought it was sweet when JLo and her daughter sang. I enjoyed the halftime performance, and look forward to next years.
Ashlyn Barnes (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Catherine Marnell I agree that the game was the most boring part. The half time performance was very interesting but for the general age of the audience I think it was appropriate.
Thalia (J.R. Masterman)
@Catherine Marnell Hi! I agree, I never really found interest in watching sports, so the halftime shows were always my favorite. Also, the commercials too, or course!
Kyla Bills (Lubbock, Texas)
I watch the game mainly for the commercials thinking they would be good for once. There were some good ones but the main bunch were not that good. My favorite one has to be the one where the guy bought a commercial just to thank the vets that saved his dog from cancer. It made me really happy and I thought it was really good. Another good one was the Ellen one with the Alexa, I thought it was funny. Me and my family weren’t really watching the game, we turned it up on the commercials and then turned it back down for the game. But the commercials haven't really been good, each year I think they get worse and worse.
Hannah Krier (Hoggard High School , Wilmington , NC)
@Kyla Bills I agree with you on the commercials getting worse and worse. None of the commercials really spiked an interest with me this year.
Izel (J.R. Masterman)
My reaction to this superbowl is it was great, it wasphenemonal. The game, the emotion coming into the game about the centennial season of football, and the music. This Super Bowl LIV was way better than LIII in every way. The game was a back and forth battle between two passionate teams, and the fact that Andy Reid was coaching the Chiefs made it a thousand times better. When the 49ers were 10 points up I expected Patrick Mahomes to comeback with ease. Mahomes was a comeback king by now, especially after leading two straight leads, 24-0 against the Texans, and 17-7 against the Titans. Mahomes was the most valuable player last year. I was definitely expecting him to have an amazing game. All in all with help from Kansas City’s defense he was able to win himself and Coach Reid their first superbowl.
Lucas (J.R Masterman)
To be honest, I think that the Super Bowl should not be played as often as it currently is. Having the Super Bowl every year is a bit much(in my opinion). The NFL should have the event more spaced out. For example, the Super bowl should maybe be every two or four years to make it a more hype event. If a team doesn't get in(this applies to any sport) to the playoffs, they shouldn't say, oh we have next year. They need to focus and be on top of their game not thinking that they have next year to play. The players need to strive for their chance for recognition. That is entirely my opinion and that what I think would make people even more excited.
Kira Douglas (J.R Masterman)
This year’s Super Bowl I rooted for the Chiefs. The first 3 quarters were very frustrating to watch, but I was glad the Chiefs played much better in the 4th quarter. I wasn’t surprised when the Chiefs were down 10 and came back and got 21 to win the game 31-20 against the 49ers; I figured Patrick Mahomes was going to make something happen. It was a little surprising how the 49ers let them not only come back but win the game by 11 with only 7 minutes left though. Overall, although I am not a Chiefs “fan,” I’m glad they won and I feel that Andy Reid, their coach, deserved the win.
Marisa Maisano (J. R. Masterman)
I LOVED the halftime show with J-Lo and Shakira. Their combination of amazing singing and showstopping performing blew me away. I especially loved it because as a Latina myself, I felt that it was very representative of the Latinx community and I felt very empowered when watching it. I definitely agree with Jon Pareles’s review of the performance, the main aspect of that being when J-Lo came out with the Puerto Rican and American flag crossover and started singing Born in the USA. That told the fact that Puerto Ricans are still U.S Citizens.
Taryn Connolly (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Marisa Maisano I agree with you, putting J LO and Shakira together for a performance was definitely one we were all on our toes ready to watch. They did put together an amazing show mixing their individual latina culture together. But do you think that the halftime show was really appropriate for all ages? I know and respect that as an artist they can and want to express themselves but sometimes I feel as if there can be too much to a performance and the other night was an example.
Weston Tanh (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I only watch the Superbowl for the halftime show because I dislike football. I definitely think that the performance was a wonderful demonstration of the Hispanic culture and the cultural diversity. The halftime show had a lot of Spanish-speeking performers such as Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and J Balvin who all showed their culture through their music. I do think that immigrants and american Latinos have recently become more widely demonized but this halftime show demonstrated that everyone’s culture is important in America and we shouldn't discriminate against a person and their culture just because of where they came from.
Lily Dorfman (J.R. Masterman)
The Super Bowl ads are always fun to watch. I don’t care about football unless it is my own team playing, so I didn’t even watch a full quarter of this year’s Super Bowl. However, I did watch most of the ads. They are very entertaining, and you almost always see a celebrity in them. My favorite commercial was a Sabra ad. It had many favorite celebrities in it, including one of my favorite Tiktokers, Charli D’amelio. This was crazy to me because she is 15 years old. She has over 23 million followers on Tiktok, 1.2 billion likes on Tiktok, and over 6 million followers on Instagram. She started getting a big following only a couple of months ago and has already been in a Super Bowl ad and has danced with J-Lo.
Erika Zeng (J.R. Masterman)
As a casual football fan, I only pay attention to my home team. For these two past years, I have not been watching the Super Bowl because they do not include my team. However, I have never paid attention to the ads. The companies use this one occasion to be extravagant and attract people, but it does not impress me at all. These ads are always more than likely to be extremely weird and then shoehorn a random phrase to relate it to the actual advertiser. I know that the Super Bowl is a big part of American culture, yet I can’t seem to get excited for it when there’s nobody for me to care about in it.
Weston Tanh (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
@Erika Zeng I absolutely agree with you on this opinion because the last time I had watched the Superbowl when the Eagles were playing, and I also believe that the ads use the celebrities to draw you in to buy their products like sugar filled sodas or a car that is new.
Elina Chen (J.R Masterman)
Personally, I am not a fan of any sport. I didn’t even know that the Super Bowl had happened until Monday, when I went back to school. From my understanding, it's a game of football? I don’t get the hype and I don’t understand anything except that the ads cost a ton of money. I believe the Chiefs won against the 49ers but to be honest, I don’t know what either of those are. I simply don’t find it very interesting and would rather spend my time doing something else.
Matt Dougherty (J. R. Masterman)
I thought that Superbowl LIV was a pretty exciting game. I was very surprised and happy that the Chiefs were able to come back from a 10 point deficit in the fourth quarter. I am really happy for Andy Reid. I’m super glad that he finally won a Superbowl. Overall a very good game. The half-time show however, was mediocre as usual. The halftime shows have almost never been good. They almost always choose mediocre artists, and most of the time the dancing and the costumes are just plain weird. The ads this year were also pretty forgettable. Besides the Rocket Mortgage ad with Jason Momoa, and the Baby Mister Peanut ad, the ads aren’t going to be remembered for very long. The companies making these ads are playing it too safe, and aren’t trying to do anything outlandish or taking any risks, like in the past. But nevertheless, the Superbowl is always a great time, because of just being able to eat a lot of food, and watch something exciting (for the most part) with your family and friends.
Sammy Abusaab (J.R. Masterman)
I was definitely surprised when Kansas City came back and won the game. The 49er’s were doing so well and then they just threw the Super Bowl. They were up 10 points, and then somehow started missing every pass and doing terrible. Also, surprised with how the Chief’s played. In the first 2-3 quarters, Mahomes missed every pass and threw so short in the game. But then all of a sudden in the 4th quarter, they got their game back together and managed to get 21 points without the 49er’s getting any points. How does that happen? But you can’t be too mad as Andy, the Chief’s coach, ended up winning after bringing the Eagle’s to the Super Bowl and losing last year.
Owen Cheung (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
What is your reaction to this year’s Super Bowl? Were you surprised that Kansas City was able to come back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, or is that exactly what you expected from Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback? My reaction to this year's Superbowl was that I was really surprised because I was rooting for the Forty-Niners but somehow Kansas City made a comeback and won. I actually thought that San Francisco would win in the first 2 quarters but then in the fourth quarter they took back the lead What do you think about the Super Bowl in general and the outsized role it plays in American culture? I think that the super bowl is a good thing in general, It gives a great form of entertainment and plays a great role in American culture and is a large part of American culture’s value
Isadora Monteith (J.R. Masterman)
I did not watch the super bowl. I mean I do not have a T.V., so I would not have been able to anyway. If I did have a television I might have, but I honestly do not know. I did see the halftime show on Youtube though. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira both had very non child appropriate outfits if you know what I mean. Their performance, In my opinion, was overall good though. Shakira and her all woman dance group did not bore wachers, and you could tell that they had worked hard to get the dance so well.
Sadie Krumrine (J.R. Masterman, Philly)
I don’t enjoy or appreciate football at all. It seems stupid to have a game where two teams pretty much just run at each other, tackle each other, and injure each other. They are paid ridiculous amounts of money, while teachers in some states haven’t gotten pay raises in years. How are the people educating the next generation of students paid way, way less than people who run around and get concussions?
Hager Alsekaf (Julia R. Masterman Highschool)
I only watched the beginning of the Super Bowl and I later fell asleep. I never actually had a problem with the Super Bowl. I just don’t find it entertaining. I don’t like watching football games. I watched about an hour of the Super Bowl but the next day I watched the half-time. I think that Shakira and Jennifer really showed their latin roots through their performance but I didn’t like it. Many kids watch the super bowl and the dance they performed wasn’t really child friendly. Other than that I didn’t really have any problems with the Super Bowl and I actually found the ads funny and entertaining.
Jason Zhang (Masterman)
I really have no love for football or really any type of sport that involves a ball, but the superbowl has some of the funniest ads and of course the halftime show is always great. In the pre-game ads, there was an advertisement for Sabra hummus. In the ad, various celebrities popped up for a couple seconds to show the hummus, and all it took was a glimpse of my idols: Miz Cracker and Kim Chi, to get me screaming and rolling on the ground. I watch tons of drag and other gay culture shows, videos, songs, etc. But I was gagged when I saw something I normally keep to myself broadcasted on a non-drag show, and especially one as famous as the Super Bowl. I think this is a great victory, because drag queens are now presented side-by-side with these other icons, without any sort of disclaimer or special scene. That one moment was enough to keep me watching the whole superbowl, which I hated, in the hopes for another glimpse of them.
Jasper (J.R. Masterman)
@Jason Zhang I fully agree with Jason that although the Super Bowl isn't the greatest to watch that the ads are amazing, especially when we get one that shows LGBTQ pride. The fact that this will be seen by millions of Americans makes it even better. I hope more networks will incorporate LGBTQ pride into their commercials when they know that they will be viewed by a large audience.
Shani (J.R. Masterman)
I think that the Super Bowl is super high in value when it doesn’t need to be. The Super Bowl is watched everywhere but the Super Bowl is going down in value so much that even people like my brother who love football and the Super Bowl in general came home and said that this was an awful Super Bowl. I just think that the Super Bowl needs to be taken less seriously and it needs to be treated like every other sports game.
Jonah Smith Posner (J.R. Masterman)
I am a fair weather fan. I will root for the eagles when they play. Otherwise, I think that football is outrageous. Why do athletes get paid more than firefighters. Firefighters save peoples live, yet football players make an average of 20 times the amount that firefighters do. To me, that feels messed up.
Sara (Lubbock)
The superbowl is always a fun high-energy experience for my family. We get together with multiple other families and enjoy good food and the game. This year, however, I didn’t expect to be left a blubbering mess after a particularly sad commercial was aired. One of the two google commercials that was aired showed the google screen while an older man spoke in the background about his wife and how he wished to remember her. It began with typing into the search bar “How To Not Forget” and then displayed older pictures of the couple while the man would say things like “Remember she loved going to Alaska” and “Remember she snorted when she laughed”. The tears were soon to follow as the screen closed with “Remember I’m the luckiest man in the world”. It was both an emotional and embarrassing moment to be in front of other people who were hyped up about the game and I was left with tears while thinking about this man's life and his experience with losing the memory of his wife. Google did a good job with impacting the viewers of the superbowl this year and I’m sure everyone will remember this commercial for a long time.
Elyssa Almos (Texas)
This year's super bowl halftime show was one of the best by to date. Jennifer lopez and Shakira really showed how proud they were to be a part of the lation community. It really brought me back to the times where me and my family were partying in mexico. It just felt like they really showed all their talents.
Elizabeth Worthington (Lubbock, Tx)
I watched the super bowl for a wholesome experience with my friends and family, but I was interrupted by an awful halftime show. In my opinion, this halftime show was the worst I can remember. I understand the reasons why Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were picked to represent cultural diversity, but I believe that artists who are actually popular should have been chosen instead. Personally, I felt disgusted when watching the halftime show. I did not want to see old women half dressed moving their bodies in a way that literally promotes sex. I believe that we can represent the problems of this world in a more entertaining and wholesome way than what was shown during this super bowl.
Ray HIlliard (Lubbock, TX)
I can’t remember a single super bowl game that I’ve watched all the way through. My parents have always been huge fans of football, but it’s never appealed to me. As a kid I thought the games were boring and long. As a teenager these feelings still apply, but that’s not the only reason I didn’t watch the big game on Sunday. The NFL has a history of racism directed towards many groups, but specifically Native Americans. Teams like the Kansas City Chiefs use this group of existing people as a mascot and many of their fans use them as a costume. I refuse to contribute and support a flawed system that uses a group of marginalized people in such a way.
Jaden Davenport (Lubbock, TX)
I didn’t watch the Super Bowl for a few reasons. Reason one is that I don’t really like football which is pretty self explanatory, but reason two is the way the Super Bowl is portrayed. The Super Bowl is very hyped up for weeks before it even happens. That means that all of my social media and tv will be filled with super bowl ads and people are talking about the super bowl for weeks after it ended. There is also the problem of the players that are always retrieving because of injuries. Not to mention the brain. Injuries that have led to these players' lives being ruined forever.
Braden Cain (Lubbock, TX)
I was really surprised by how the tables turned in this year's Super Bowl. By the fourth quarter, I was sure that the 49ers had won the game, but then the Chiefs stepped up their game and won! I really think the halftime show was really good. It was a great choice of songs, and the choreography fit really well. I do agree with Jon Pareles’s review. The show really seemed to be a statement of Latin power and pride. I think a few of the Super Bowl ads this year were actually really good. I really liked the Jeep ad with Punxsutawney Phil and all of the different activities that he did. I thought it was really creative and funny. A really memorable ad for me was the Amazon Alexa ad that went back in time. I think the Super Bowl is really cool. It is fun to watch, and for many people, it is like a day off from the hard grind of life.

@Braden Cain I agree with you on the ads. They were very funny and entertaining and the Alexa ad was really cool.
Mitchell (United States)
I watched the SuperBowl LIV and it was a pretty good game/event. It ended with the Chiefs winning, which surprised me because I thought that they were down for the count since the chiefs were up by 10 in the 4th, but I guess that it just shows that the chiefs have a great young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. The halftime show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira was full of energy and fun, though a lot of people on twitter seemed mad at the fact that it wasn't child friendly. The ads were funny/entertaining, but then again they always are. My favorite had to be the doritos commercial that had Lil Nas in it. Overall I think that the superbowl is a large/major part of American culture, it’s a widely celebrated event and it brings a good majority of Americans together on one night (metaphorically and physically).
Sydney Pugh (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Football games, and football teams are a trivial thing when discussing the misuse of Native American Culture, and the Ignorance of historical context. Since the beginning of European's contact with Native Americans, they've continued to push Natives out of their rightful land, and disregard their culture and traditions. Throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's Native American's began to be forced out of their homes and taken to boarding schools, where they would be taken of everything which defined them as Native Americans, and forced to assimilate to a 'European Way of Life'. For Native Americans to have faced hundreds of years of oppression, and be shamed in and mocked for their culture, for it now to be taken so carelessly and misused for a fun football game tradition is unacceptable. It's not only inaccurate to any Native American’s culture or traditions, but it generalizes who Native American’s are. They aren’t the chanting and hollering cartoon’s depicted in old movies or television, they are real people who hold unity in the rich and unique cultural traditions and values they share that have been passed down through generations. They aren’t mascots, and they shouldn't be treated as such. It’s extremely degrading for a person’s culture to merely be simplified and desensitized into a 2D caricature, or a mocking chant, and I hope the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans, as well as other sports teams such as the Indians and Redskins start to realize that.
Sydney Melms (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn,IL)
Being from Chicago, the Bears season has been over a long time ago but on the other hand that doesn’t stop me from watching football. Many people find it surprising that I watch football and that I know what’s going on. This Super Bowl I was rooting for the Chiefs, there was no reason for this but I thought they deserved to win after not being in the Super Bowl for a long time. I watched the whole game, every play, full on couch potato style screaming at the tv like they were going to hear me. After the two interceptions I thought this could all go down hill real quick, but then the reviewed touchdown pushed and turned the momentum of the game around. In all, I think the a Super Bowl is a great American event and a great excuse to eat all food you want.
Hope Flournoy (Lubbock, TX)
Though I am a Cheerleader, I don’t watch football just for fun. I generally only watch it when I’m cheering or I know the people playing. The superbowl, however, is basically an American holiday. I really enjoyed the half-time show and the cultural music that they danced and sang too that was very popular in America but originated from other countries. I was not particularly impressed with the commercials this year, but the TurboTax one stood out to me. The only thing I remember about it is that everyone was wobbling their legs back and forth, which was entertaining to me. Overall I enjoyed watching the Superbowl, especially since I’m from Lubbock, Texas, where Pat Mahomes is from.
Mason McDonald (Lubbock-Cooper High School)
The Super Bowl is an American classic. On this Sunday, millions buy lots of food, deserts, and then sit down for the next hours. Every part of this event is a tradition too. The commercials are known for this game, and the half-time presents some of the biggest stars. This year Jenifer Lopez and Shakira performed at the Super Bowl Half-Time Show. This show had a lot of controversial parts to it. The focus of the show was to celebrate Latino culture in America. It featured many Latino influenced music and dances. This led to some Americans seeing the performance as “inappropriate.” However, this comes as a sexist remark. Last year, Adam Levine literally stripped on stage and little people had a problem with that performance. These complaints of “inappropriateness” show a double-standard in today’s society.
Izel (J.R. Masterman)
@Mason McDonald I totally agree, people are trying to prove a point by stating what had happened in the halftime show but are just trying to bring down the fact that this performance brought more culture to the Superbowl then years past as this is a global event not just a event in the US. I personally as a Latino enjoyed the mix of different music and the more Latino dances and choreography the brought to this years show
Hannah Purdy (Lubbock, TX)
I was very impressed with the Super Bowl ads this year. There were a plethora of themes and emotions inspired by these ads. For example, Google showed a heart touching advertisement featuring a grandfather who recalled different traits of his deceased wife, Loretta. As the audience views their life together, nostalgic feelings were brought to the surface and tears were in many eyes. On the other hand, some companies went in another direction. Hyundai’s new “Smart Park” technology was displayed in a commercial featuring Chris Evans, John Krasinski, and Rachel Dratch. All the actors spoke in Boston-inspired accents and were shocked by this new technology. Mountain Dew Zero went a similar route in their advertisement, which was a throwback to the Shining. Bryan Cranston is shown chasing Tracee Ellis Ross through a creepy house with an axe in one hand and Mountain Dew Zero in the other. As Cranston tries to chop down the door, he hands the Mountain Dew to Ross, who quickly goes from frantic to thirsty. Overall, I enjoyed the use of nostalgia, comedy, and fear that was used in this year’s advertisements.
Sammy Abusaab (J.R. Masterman)
@Hannah Purdy I agree. The ads this year were phenomenal. Like you said, many different celebrities starred in the ads, making it fun to try and pick them all out. The ads also were heartfelt, like the one you mentioned about Loretta, and some were very funny, like the Mountain Dew Zero ad and the one with Jason Momoa in the ad for Rocket Mortgage. Very enjoyable to watch.
KCL (J.R Masterman)
Before the hype of the Super Bowl on Sunday, I said to my parents that I would root for whichever team was in the lead at the time. In the end, I didn’t and/or couldn’t watch the Super Bowl. I had too much stuff to do and I wasn’t that into football, especially the teams that were playing. The only part I saw was the celebration and all the confetti. How will they clean all of that confetti? I imagined that they would get a huge, industrial vacuum and engulf it all. Besides that, I didn’t really see anything else. When I ask my mother which team won, she said “Mahomes won”, which refers to Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Cheifs’s quarterback. Even when I went to school on Monday, I didn’t hear much about the Super Bowl. Nonetheless, I got to stay up late on Sunday so it wasn’t all that boring.
Isadora Monteith (J.R. Masterman)
@KCL I am interested as well about the confetti. It does leave you wondering how they got it all up.
Skye Solomon (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@KCL I agree that the Super Bowl is boring. I have never been interested in football and don’t see the appeal of sitting through 3.5 hours of a game just because the best teams for that year are playing. There was a lot of hype leading up to the game, and I heard people at school talking about it in every class last week, but since the game, I haven’t really heard anything. I was interested in watching the halftime show and some of the commercials, but I also had too much homework due the next day to catch more than a few glimpses of the game and other performances.
Cyrus Fisher (J. R. Masterman)
I don’t really follow football. The only game I watch is the Super Bowl, and every year I have to ask my dad to refresh the rules of the game for me. I watch the Super Bowl for the ads and the halftime show, and because almost everyone else watches it. I was rooting for the Chiefs, only because my friends were too. The halftime show was… interesting. The music was terrific, Shakira and J.Lo are incredible vocalists, but the dancing and costumes were definitely oversexualized. The dancing (especially in those outfits) was disconcerting, but I don’t think it was too much. But when Lopez started doing a routine on a poll, that crossed the line. The halftime show comes on at 8pm, so there’s a good chance that children are still awake and watching. If I was a parent, I would prefer my children not to see all of that. The performance did show Latin pride, but I think the message would have been displayed better if the show was less sexual.
Keileigh Williams (Lubbock, TX)
Even though I’m an athletic trainer, I don’t just watch football for fun or because that’s what I’m used to watching. I like to watch football because it is overall one of my favorite sports to watch and be involved in. One of the dramaticized games in today’s society is the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is overall a big American holiday for people to cook out and have parties with friends and family. I personally felt that this year’s Super Bowl was really fun and enjoyable to watch. I was not surprised that the Chiefs were able to make a comeback in the last half of the game. If you have watched the rest of the Chief’s season, they have had multiple games where they were able to make a comeback. I felt that the MVPs of the game were Patrick Mahomes, of course, as well as Damien Williams from the Chiefs. I felt that they were the two players of the game that made the most action for the Chiefs. I really enjoyed how the Chiefs had a positive attitude the whole game, and they never gave up. Overall, it was a really good game to watch and enjoy.
Manav Jha (J.R. Masterman)
The Super Bowl this year was a nice one. The comeback of the chiefs was what really made it exciting and interesting. The halftime show and the commercials were also very interesting to watch. The halftime show starring JLO and Shakira was a lot to watch. With all the colors and dancing, it was great. In my opinion, Jon Pareles was right in saying that it was a party but represented Latin culture. The dancing at some points would not have been okay to be seen by people of younger age, as they were wearing very revealing clothes. The commercials in my opinion were very interesting and good. My favorite commercials were the commercial for Sabra Hummus, Rocket Mortgage, and the Doritos cool ranch commercials. The Sabra commercial had two people that I recognized as celebrities. The first was TikTok star Charli D’amelio, and the second was magician Zach King. I recognized both of them from TikTok, considering I use it everyday. In the Rocket Mortgage commercial, I saw Jason Momoa, actor of Aquaman, and the commercial made me laugh because he was “secretly skinny”. I really thought he would become Lil Huddy, another TikTok star. The third and final commercial I enjoyed was the Doritos commercial. During this commercial, it showed Lil Nas X, a singer, and in the end showed Billy Ray Cyrus, another country singer. In this commercial Lil Nas X hit the woah, but did it weirdly and it made me laugh.
Nick Doleschel (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia)
I found that the halftime show starring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez was different. I think that they changed the style of the halftime show, which I found to be great, as the previous halftime shows had been very monotonous. Additionally, I agree with the review that the performance was an affirmation of Latin Pride. For the first time in a while, maybe even ever, Latin-American singers had sung at the superbowl, giving latin-americans reasons to be proud. And they rocked the performance as well. In my opinion, it was also an act of defiance, as they performed on one of the biggest stages of America while our president is attempting to build a wall to keep latinos out.
Seinnel Cruz (J.R Masterman)
This year, the Superbowl didn’t feel that interesting. Football as a whole isn’t that interesting to me, so usually, I only watch it for the commercials and the halftime show. This year, I loved the halftime show. The recognition of Latinas in the music world is a really big thing for me. Also, the energy and how much stuff was happening was cool. All of the background dancers were amazing during the performance and the diversity between all of them was very nice. I love to see all the different kinds of people from different backgrounds.
MC (PA)
I did not watch the Superbowl. Maybe I should feel a little guilty, because it is such a huge American tradition. But I have no interest in football, and neither does my family, who come from other countries where football is not even considered. I don’t understand anything about the game. I play tennis and have no experience with football. So I stayed home and practiced my instrument. However, I did end up watching the Jason Momoa ad in school and thought it was pretty good. I can see why companies spend so much money, because so many people watch the Superbowl, so the ads will be viewed by many people, promoting the business.
Greg Sevrukov (J.R. Masterman)
Overall I believe that the superbowl is a good part of American culture when many people watch the superbowl and can unite by talking about it. This year’s superbowl was amazing. The halftime ads were funny and more amusing than last year’s. I simply can’t imagine that 100 million people could have seen these ads. To be honest I think the cost is worth it. Now, the game. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri so Kansas City was very close. To be honest I’m not even that surprised they made a 20 point comeback winning the Superbowl. I knew they had it in the bag and I knew they weren’t going to lose. What I am surprised about is that they didn’t do so well in the first 3 quarters. They were down 10 points! However, that doesn’t even matter now because they got themselves together and made a huge comeback to win the Superbowl.
Jeet Patel (J.R. Masterman)
This year’s Super Bowl was not that bad. By the end of the third quarter, I was thinking that the 49ers were gonna take it, but out of nowhere the Chiefs ended up scoring 21 points in just the fourth quarter and taking the win. It was only good to see that for once the Patriots didn’t make it. I'm not saying the Patriots are a bad team, but it honestly got annoying seeing them there almost every year. I really liked the commercials this year, too. My favorite was probably the Doritos one with Lil Nas X. Also, the halftime show was pretty good and my favorite part of it was probably the tribute to Kobe Bryant. Overall, I really enjoyed this year’s Super Bowl.
Theodore Loshi (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia)
This Super Bowl was a pretty good game because even though I’m not a fan of those teams it was still exciting to see the comeback that the Chiefs made and to see Patrick Mahomes be listed MVP after his amazing performance. The Half Time show was also fun to watch as I saw Shakira and J-Lo perform on stage and I’ve been a fan of Shakira for a while so that was probably one of my favorite Half Time shows I’ve seen. There are also a lot of people complaining about their show and that it wasn’t child friendly but you should be doing something to prevent your child from seeing that instead of insulting the two about their performance. Another feature I enjoy watching are the creative ads that big companies think of for the Super Bowl. You see a lot of celebrities you enjoy watching in the ads and it just makes them even better. Overall I was pretty happy for how everything turned out and can’t wait to see what happens next Super Bowl.
Lily Sussman (J.R. Masterman)
I think that the performance Jennifer Lopez gave was really great. Her gorgeous representation of her culture was really refreshing, especially at such a quintessentially American event. It was really nice to show that the U.S. isn't just one color, nor background. I think what really made it for me was that her daughter came onstage with her. It showed the next generations growing up in this country and how much the future holds for them. Usually, the Super Bowl halftime show is never this political and frankly, I'm surprised that they were permitted to be. At such a tumultuous time, it is very risky. I am not saying that I condemn it, I just feel like, with so many right wing viewers watching, it could be a wrong decision.
John Ritsko (J. R. Masterman School, PA)
When I watch the Super Bowl, I never really pay attention to the actual game and I prefer to watch the ads and the halftime show. I thought that this year most of the ads ranged from really good to really confusing, just like they always do. The halftime show was good but it felt a little all over the place and hard to follow.
Oliver K. (Julia R. Masterman)
This year’s Super Bowl was fun to watch, and exciting, but I think it will be like Super Bowl LIII, unmemorable. Sure it was close, and sure the Chiefs had an amazing comeback from losing 20-10 in the fourth quarter, but most of the country isn’t going to remember who played. I think that the most memorable part of the Super Bowl will be the halftime show. I don’t think the halftime show was great, it looked like a strip club filled with middle aged women and backup dancers, I think the reason it will be memorable is because of how weird it was. I understand that there are messages behind it, but J. Lo and Shakira turned something that used to be fun to watch, into something that I started laughing at. Again, I understand the messages hidden in it, but if that was the goal then the messages should have been more obvious and less hidden behind twerking backup dancers. The Super Bowl ads are the best I’ve seen in awhile. My favorites were the Snickers commercial with the snickers hole, or the Rocket Mortgage one with Jason Mamoa peeling off his fake muscles. Overall I was insanely impressed by the ads, which isn’t surprising considering the fact that it cost $5 million for a 30 second ad. The Super Bowl, while it only seems like a huge football game to me it represents, family and togetherness. My family always enjoys chicken wings and barbequed food while watching it either just as a family, or with neighbors.
Josiah White (J. R. Masterman)
I personally thought that the game was great and the chiefs coming back in the fourth quarter to get Andy Reid his first superbowl win was such a great story. The commercials were great as well, being funny and happy which is nice to see from big companies. I think that the halftime show has been hyped up way too much after. It was cool, but honestly, most of the performance felt like it was just twerking and not actually doing much dancing or singing.
Ezra Beidler-Shenk (J.R. Masterman)
Every year my youth group has a party and every year it is a great time. This year's game was super exciting, there was lots of scoring, great plays, and a great comeback. I was kind of rooting for the chiefs, because they haven’t won in fifty years and the 49ers have like five titles, but also because I think Andy Reid deserves a title. He has won so many games without a title and I am really happy for him. He also coached the Eagles for many years who are my favorite team. This year's super bowl was also so much more fun to watch than last year's super bowl. Last year there was very little scoring and the game was just kind of boring. Although my favorite super bowl yet was definitely the Eagles vs. Patriots in Super Bowl fifty two. It was very close up until the end and the game could have been decided on the last play which is always exciting. It was also much more exciting because my team was in it which always makes games more fun to watch. Overall though, this was a good Superbowl and it was fun to watch.
Gabe Axelrod (J.R. Masterman)
While I am a passionate Andy Reid hater, I am happy for Chiefs fans everywhere. I mean a Superbowl win for the first time in history is just amazing, I remember the eagles Superbowl win like it was yesterday. While this game pales in comparison to the Eagles win, it was still a good game and a good Superbowl run. Let's be real any Superbowl victory with Andy Reid as a coach is amazing, it just proves how good Patrick Mahomes is. I am happy that the Chiefs finally joined the winners circle, and when they came back from a 10 point deficit I wasn’t surprised as they did it in every other playoff game during this run. Honestly the Chiefs probably have the second greatest Superbowl run in history right after the 2017 Eagles run.
Jayden Vance (J.R. Masterman)
My favorite part about the Super Bowl is always the commercials. They never fail to impress me. This year, my favorite commercials were the Jason Momoa Rocket Mortgage commercial and the Ellen DeGeneres Alexa commercial. They were both really funny but I think the best one was the Jason Momoa one. I thought it was really cool how they edited it to make him look really skinny and the scenery was gorgeous. All of this year's commercials were pretty good, but my favorite will always be the Doritos commercial from 2017 with the baby.
Carter Osborn (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
In comparison to last year's Super Bowl, which was horrifying and gross to watch, I actually enjoyed sitting down and watching the game. Maybe it was because the New England Patriots were not in it. Maybe because it was both an offensive and defensive battle. Maybe because it was because the outcome of the game was decided in the final minutes. But, one thing I know for certain is that I did not watch the halftime show. Instead, I used my time to study for my test the following day. The halftime show has been a controversial topic that either pleases one party or displeases the other, and this year was not different from others. Although, as referenced in the article, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez did show off their Latina pride and empowerment, my Instagram and Twitter feeds were flooded with pictures of the strippers, butts, and outfits, which I do not think was the message that was trying to be portrayed. I believe the halftime show has not been the same since Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage on February 2, 2014, during Super Bowl XLVIII. I may have some bias with this opinion because RHCP are my favorite band, but it is the one halftime show that has stuck out to me throughout the years. I am thankful that this year was not another 13-3 game. I loved watching two great teams full of youth fight until the last minute. I believe the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs are here to stay. And I'm here for it.
Kaylee Phillips (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, IL)
Every year my family either hosts a Super Bowl party or visits another one. I think that the Super Bowl provides a chance for the country to all get together on one day and appreciate the same experience. Although I don’t watch the game usually, I did end up watching the last few minutes of the game. When I heard everyone in my house screaming and shouting, I had find out what all the noise was about. I was completely shocked at the comeback the Chiefs made, especially because it all happened within the last 5 minutes of the game. The part I watched most intensely though, was of course, the halftime show. I’m always so excited to see what they end up doing for it, and this year I really liked it. They definitely kept the audience on their toes with the exciting music and glittery costumes, but, as the article suggests, it goes deeper than that. At first I didn’t see it as much, but after reading this, I do agree that it was an amazing statement of Latin pride. In this time of tough political climate, it was important to do something showcasing the cultural diversity.
Nolan Hart (Glenbard West High School, IL)
I thought this years Super Bowl was one of the best ones of the decade. There wasn’t a moment where I wasn’t interested in the game. Even the halftime show was fun to watch. I wasn’t surprised about the comeback because the chiefs were losing all their games and came back to win in all three playoff games.
Manav Jha (J.R. Masterman)
@Nolan Hart I agree, the halftime show was good and the chiefs had an expected comeback, but I disagree with you when you say that this was one of the best games of the decade. Take 2018, the Eagles Patriots game. The Eagles, total underdogs against the patriots, one of the best teams which have 6 Super Bowl wins and have been to the Bowl 11 times. That is 8 more appearances than the Eagles and 5 more wins. This was a legendary comeback as nearing the end of the 4th and final quarter, they won the Super Bowl, getting their first title.
Sadie Krumrine (J.R. Masterman, Philly)
@Manav Jha I think that I would have to agree with what you said about the 2018 Super Bowl. I normally don't watch the Super Bowl, but I did because the Eagles were playing. I definitely agree with what you said, though I didn't watch this year's Super Bowl to compare it with.
Tommy J (Saco)
This year's Super Bowl was quite the entertaining one. There was a great halftime show, an amazing game, and a couple of good commercials. I found the best part if this year's game to be the game itself. The two teams, in my eyes, we quite evenly matched, each with a franchise quarterback, a decent surrounding cast, and a good defense. It was fun to see each side battle it out with ups and downs coming frequently for both sides. In the end, Pat Mahomes ended up storming back from a 10 point deficit and claiming the Lombardi trophy. Along with the game, I think the half time show was also good. I found it entertaining and fun to watch. Although k didn't know very many songs by either artist, it was still and fun part of the game. Finally, the commercials. To me, the commercials we a bit of a let down this year. There was still many good ones, but not as much as years past. Never the less they were still another fun and entertaining part of the game the I think every football fan looks forward to.
Sophia Caparelli (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
Although I love football, I have never been very into the professional league. Regardless, I always watch the Super Bowl because it is a family tradition. This year's game was fun to watch and it was nice to see teams other than the Patriots for once. I didn't really care what the turnout was, I was just happy to spend time with my family. One of the main reasons I enjoy the Super Bowl so much is seeing the commercials and the half-time show. They are always super interesting and can make you laugh, cry, or want to get up and dance. Personally, I loved the half-time show this year. In the article, Jon Pareles says it was a "party," yet it was also "a no-nonsense affirmation of Latin pride and cultural diversity..." I completely agree and applaud J-Lo and Shakira for a powerful performance with an even more powerful message. The commercials this year were also interesting and very entertaining. Some that stood out to me were the Google ad, the Cheetos ad, and the New York Life Insurance ad. I liked the mix between serious and funny commercials this year and I think that they were all very clever and well thought-out. The Super Bowl is a great tradition that brings people together from all communities. It raises awareness of certain issues, entertains people all over the country, and unifies citizens of the United States.
Jordan Mozockie (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
@Sophia Caparelli I agree with you on many points and I too found the Super Bowl extremely entertaining this year. It is interesting how you pointed out, in accordance with Jon Pareles, that the halftime show was not only entertaining but a political statement providing a powerful message. This I believe to be true and for me, because it actually had a meaning and wasn’t just about entertainment, that’s what made the performance so much better and more memorable. A shift to having more serious commercials (still balanced with entertaining or funny ones) as well as a halftime show that uses music to respectfully and beautifully address political issues can, as you stated, bring people together but also raise awareness. I think the show was incredible but I do propose a question not in any particular relation to the half time show, should performers stick to performing for entertainment or should more of them use their fan bases to make political comments?
Keira McWilliams (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
The halftime show of the Super Bowl 2020 featuring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira had a goal of showing cultural pride for Latin America. Latin America is often looked down on in our country. So Jennifer Lopez and Shakira had a great opportunity to show the wonderful culture and heritage to the nation during their performance. Both of them are talented and the stamina of everyone performing blew my mind. Although, they are known for being outgoing performers with a very large stage presence, so as both of them were performing, they seemed to be competing for the spotlight. Also, their performance was very sexualized as the incorporation of poles and revealing outfits were the main takeaway from their performance. I was watching the Super Bowl at a neighborhood get together, at which there were about 15 elementary aged children. During the performance, the parents were uncomfortable having their children watching the performance and the children were also uneasy watching it. One of the boys said “Mom, if they are so rich, why can’t they afford more clothes? They definitely aren’t wearing enough to be on TV.” In conclusion, while the performance was incredibly impressive and well done, I don’t know if it was the best way to spread the message of normalizing Latin culture.
Daren L. (J.R. Masterman)
I was extremely surprised when the Chiefs pulled up their game at the with about five minutes left in the final quarter. My two brothers made a $10 bet and the older brother lost and gave up on the bet. The younger one also made a $10 bet with my grandfather and my grandfather also gave up on the bet. I have no words for the halftime show. I was a little inappropriate and my little sister was watching the halftime show and when J Lo. squatted my sister was wide eyed. 🤦‍♂️ Other kids must have been watching the halftime show. I respectfully disagree with anyone who say the halftime show was cultural. I was surprised of how long the ads were. A lot of them were 30 seconds to one minute long. That is about $5.6 million and $11.2 million. The ads that stood out the most to me were the Trump ads and the Bloomberg ad because these are the first political ads ever on the super bowl. The ads that are memorable to me are the Tide Pod commercials, the Post Malone and Bud Light Seltzer and regular Bud Light, the Mt. Dew Zero ad the was change to "The Shining" movie, and the Pepsi ad with Missy Elliot.

I thought this year’s Super Bowl was a really good game. I wasn’t particularly rooting for either of the teams but I thought it was pretty cool and fun to watch the Chiefs come back and win the game from a 10-point deficit. It was incredible how Mahomes lead his team to score 21 points after being down by 10 without letting the 49ers score at all. I thought the halftime show was pretty good, they certainly both have a lot of talent, though I do think parts of it were a bit risqué. I thought it was really cool how Jennifer Lopez’s daughter came on stage and performed and I think she did a fantastic job. Some of the ads this year were pretty good, though I feel as though the last couple years the ads haven’t been quite as good. I did really like the groundhog one, I thought that was really cute and funny and I thought the google one was really well made and touching that it helps people remember loved ones. All in all, I thought the Super Bowl was pretty good this year and though I don’t really watch football, I love this one day of the year where we just relax, eat good food, and enjoy family time.
FM (USA)
Thought it the best Super Bowl in years. Transplant 49ers fan. However when everyone thought the 49ers had it sealed going into the 4th quarter my only comment was that the game was not over. Too much respect for Mahomes and Andy Reid. And they delivered. Well deserved victory and respect.
Iris M. (J. R. Masterman)
I just started watching the Superbowl two years ago, and really the only reason I still watch it is for the halftime show and the ads. This year, I didn't find the ads to be as good as previous years. When the Planters ad came on, I was super upset because I didn't want them to kill off Mr. Peanut. The Quibi ad made no sense to me, but I did enjoy both the Bud Light Seltzer ad, and the Before Alexa ad.
John Ritsko (J. R. Masterman School, PA)
Let me say that the HalfTime show was well… Inappropriate and terrible. I understand the whole side of feminism and such but both performers showed a bit too much body. I liked the effort they put into it but I may be the first to say it was a bit too much. I agree that it was nonsense of Latino Pride. I understand the need to express themselves and their culture but really? I do not know much but I do know that being almost naked is not Latino pride.
John Goodman (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
@John Ritsko I agree with your statement. Latino culture, especially the music, has become a major part of the American culture and it is wonderful that they are getting the chance to represent their culture. However, it is clear that their performance is not being remembered for the music. The main focus of the show — a show known for bringing families together with their children — is being overshadowed by inappropriate dancing and clothing. Maybe they got what they wanted: a memorable show no matter how you look at it.
Sophia Caparelli (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@John Ritsko I completely disagree with you. Even though you might have not personally enjoyed the half-time show, it does not mean that it was not impactful and brilliantly produced and performed. Your statement has no solid argument or counter-argument. Therefore, it may be difficult for someone to really see and consider your point of view. Shakira and Jennifer Lopez are two extremely talented women and did not do anything that TV has not seen before. Not being able to appreciate their efforts and true message of the show seems childish and close-minded. Not only is J-Lo talented, she is also a sister, a daughter, and most importantly a mother. Her daughter along with a children's choir was included in the show. They helped raise awareness of the demonization of Latinos in America and gave recognition to undocumented-immigrants. This alone shows the true message of this show and the way it empowers an entire community.
Lily Sussman (J.R. Masterman)
@John Ritsko I agree with you only somewhat. I feel as though the performance might not have been right for all the viewers of the Super Bowl. There were certainly some sexual moments. However, I thought the performance was well-thought out and very entertaining. Maybe the choreographers sexualized them too much but, the performers themselves were very good and I find it odd you are so upset. Saying they were,¨almost naked¨ and that the performance was,¨terrible¨ is very exaggerated.
Adeline Velma Martinez (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I was really excited to watch this year's Super Bowl, not just because my home team (the 49ers) were playing but also because I was expecting a great game, knowing Mahomes was the type of player that usually has a great comeback towards the end of the game. I wasn't surprised when the Chiefs were able to comeback from a 10-point defeat, if anything I was actually expecting that to happen. Of course I was disappointed when the 49ers weren't able to pull through in the end, but I was also happy for the Chiefs, knowing that this was Mahomes first time going to the Super Bowl, and the first time the Chiefs have gone to the Super Bowl in over 50 years. I thought the halftime show was very uplifting and fun to watch. I do find myself seeing the show as a type of Latin pride, because it portrays two Latina performers who are able to express themselves through dance and song. I myself being a Latina really enjoyed the Latin pride that was expressed during the performance. There weren't any commercials that stuck out to me, most of them are a blur to me now, but I did enjoy watching them. Overall, I always love watching the Super Bowl. I think it does play a role in American culture, because it is one of the most widely known sports, and people are able to come together and bond over their love of the Super Bowl and halftime or just football in general.
Sofia Noonan (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@Adeline Velma Martinez If I'm going to be honest, I don't watch football. I don't completely understand how the game works, but I will usually sit and watch the Super Bowl with my family. My dad and brother are very into sports so there's always some kind of game playing on the TV. The Super Bowl brings my family together. I also love your say on the Super Bowl half time show. At school today, one of my teachers asked the class to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down regarding the show. Looking around the room, not only my teacher's thumb was down, but so was almost everyone's in the room. I hate to say it, but I was a little dissapointed to see that. As a Latina I loved seeing representation of a culture I haven't been able to truly experience. I think that the Super Bowl did an amazing job this year representing a different lifestyle that millions of Americans saw that has never been shown in many American homes. America as well as the beautiful city of Miami where I was born, Is a melting pot that should show acceptance.
Shiv (King of Prussia, PA)
This year’s superbowl was pretty interesting. In football, a 10 point deficit is very hard to come-back, because a team needs 2 consecutive possessions with scoring to at least tie. In simple terms, a team has to score twice and not let the other team score once. However, I guess the Kansas City Chiefs deserved the win, especially after 50 years. It didn’t really matter to me, who won the Super Bowl, I was just looking for an entertaining game. Likewise, the halftime show was incredible. It entailed a well-thought-out performance conveying major themes that impact our society today, but also portrayed the sense of partying. Moreover, no ads really stood out to me. However, many were increasingly entertaining. I remember the tide ad, where each later ad referenced the previous one. All in all, the superbowl plays a tremendous role in American culture. It brings people together for an enjoyable football game. Given that, not only is football significant but all sports are also important. The superbowl’s winner brings fame and glory to the victor’s city. In essence, the superbowl is a prestigious event whose outcome means a great deal to everyone.
Elliot C (Masterman)
SuperBowl LIV! I was waiting for this game since like,... last year. To be honest, though, this was definitely not a SuperBowl I will remember. First of all, I need to address the victory of the chiefs. I thought the score would be 20-28 chiefs, but it was 20-31, so that was not a bad estimate. Especially with Andy Reid as the head coach and Patrick Mahomes as QB, the chiefs had a great offense. If only that bucko of a head coach Andy Reid could have brought the Eagles to the SuperBowl before 2012. Enough about the teams though, let's talk about the halftime show. Shakira and Jlo huh, what a mix. Obviously not a good one though, as the halftime show went like most... not that good, and second, there's gotta be like a 2-foot height difference, so that had to be a bit embarrassing for Shakira. Overall, the 54th SuperBowl was pretty fun to watch, but it's definitely not something I will be remembering.
Catherine Jonathan (J.R Masterman)
I didn’t watch the Super Bowl this year because I didn’t feel like watching, and I felt like I could do something that I was more interested in. I didn’t feel like watching because I didn’t know any of the teams that were playing. But if I had to pick one team that I liked better, I would probably say the Chiefs because that’s what everyone said, based on what I heard. I didn’t even know where the teams were from. I’m not a sports fan anyway, so I wouldn’t spend my time watching it. The only time I watched the Super Bowl was in 2018 when the Eagles were playing against the Patriots. The reason I watched it was because I wanted a team to win. Obviously, I wanted the Eagles to win, and I was super excited when they did. I actually watched it then because I know the Eagles are fromPhiladelphia, which is where I’m from, which is why I supported them. I was familiar with them, so I wanted to watch it, but in this year’s Super Bowl, I didn’t really care because I wasn’t familiar with any of the teams. I felt like I had better things to do than watch two teams compete against each other, especially if I didn’t know who they were. I just think I had better things to do than watch two teams compete against each other, when I didn’t know who they were. I don’t understand football, which is why I didn’t watch it, but I think it is fun to watch it, just because I’m always curious to see who wins and what happens. I just didn’t feel a big motivation to watch it this year.
Paulie Sobol (J.R Masterman)
As a 49ers fan, I was really surprised when the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points. I thought that the 49ers strong defensive line would pass rush and stop the run but the Chiefs still prevailed. The third quarter was all 49ers, while the 4th quarter was all Chiefs and could not be handled by the 49ers. I knew Patrick Mahomes had some “ Mahomes Magic” in him. This was so ironic because before the play was snapped, a commentator said that the Chiefs needed some Mahomes Magic. Then, right after, Mahomes threw a bomb to Tyreek Hill, putting the Chiefs in the red zone. This play went for more than 40 yards. The talent of the Chiefs could not be handled by the strength of the 49ers. It was a very interesting and befuddling game. Congrats to Big Red ( Andy Reid: Coach of Chiefs) for getting his first Super Bowl. Also, congrats to the Chiefs for winning in a prestigious stage of football.
Adeline Velma Martinez (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Paulie Sobol I totally agree with you on everything you mentioned. It was awesome that the 49ers were able to make it to the Super Bowl especially after the last few years they've been having. The Chiefs really did prove themselves too when they came out on top, through the 10-point lead. It was a good game, and it was really fun to watch with my family.
Ryan Altschuler (J.R Masterman School)
I love watching the Super Bowl because it connects the millions of people in the United States and around the world all gathered around the TV watching. The one thing that separates all the people is who they are rooting for, this year it was either the Kansas City Chiefs or the San Francisco 49ers. But even these two teams are very similar because both their uniform are different shades of red, gold, and white. This year when I saw all the people in the background I couldn’t tell who they were rooting for because they all look the same. This year I was rooting for the Chiefs just because and because that their coach, Andy Reid, was the formers c0ach of my hometown team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Before the game, my dad told me that Andy Reid was ranked sixth overall for wins but had never one a Super Bowl. I found this crazy because if you have so many wins, one is bound to be a Super Bowl win, right? At the beginning of the fourth quarter, like most other people I thought that the 49ers would win because they were up by 10. It stayed that way for a little while longer and all of a sudden there was a pass interference foul in the end zone, which gave the Chiefs the ball at the one-yard line. They scored a touchdown and suddenly they were only down by three. The ball now went back to the 49ers who weren’t able to do anything and the ball was turned over. The Chiefs score another touchdown and win the game. I was so excited that the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV, 31-20.

I did not watch the Super Bowl for many reasons. One of them was due to the homework I had (and forgot) to do. But I think the main reason I didn’t watch it is that I think people over dramatize everything that happens at it. Personally, I see nothing in the commercials, and watching football is just not my cup of tea. My dad couldn’t even watch the half-time show and just watched a movie instead. I can understand how yesterday’s Super Bowl was interesting, as there was an amazing comeback in the 4th quarter, but in general I think it is just a way for sports channels to make crazy amounts of money from ridiculous costing advertisements that are hugely overrated.
dylan palantino (jr masterman)
My reaction to the super bowl was annoying. This was because the 49’ers only ran the ball and the chiefs did not play like themselves. The chiefs are a flashy team who scores a lot of points and gets a lot of yards. But they don’t have the best defence. On the other hand the 49’ers are a team with an above average offence and an amazing defence. So I knew the chiefs would win because you can’t win without points but the 49’ers were throwing the chiefs off. My thoughts on the halftime show were that there was so much to look at and it was in your face. The music was ok but there were some parts which were not appropriate for kids but it was alright. My thoughts on the ads are that they were annoying and I did not care about them. I know that they cost so much money but I don’t want to see them. Those are my thoughts about the super bowl.
Christopher Misko (J.R. Masterman)
During the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Cheifs trailed by double digits but that didn’t stop me having faith in them. I know Patrick Mahomes as “The Comeback King,” and he was able to prove it right there. Getting two touchdowns in a row helped the Cheifs keep the 49ers on their toes and that proved costly for San Francisco. They had to rush their play which led them to keep giving up easy turnovers in the final two minutes. I really liked glancing up at the halftime show every once in a while. I don’t love to see the performances but on Sunday I decided to watch a little more of it. I do agree with Jon Pareles and his statement. This halftime show really did show diversity and Latin pride and that boost in society is something well needed in today’s world. The ads this year in the Super Bowl were awful. I love to see the commercials but this year they were just as old and boring as any other commercial or ad that airs on a daily basis. No ads were really special this year. I was hoping for that one big commercial like I see every year but we will just have to wait until next February. Overall Super Bowl LIV was a really good one. Coming off of one of the worst Super Bowls ever which was Super Bowl LIII, this one was a good refreshment. Seeing what I saw last night, Super Bowl LV is going to be something special!
Valeria (J.R. Masterman)
I thought that the Superbowl this year was not too bad. The entire time I was rooting for the Chiefs because of their connection to the Eagles (my favorite team) through Andy Reid. Along with this I have some very competitive friends who were on the side of the 49ers, and it was a big deal for not only the Chiefs to win, but for me to beat my friends. I will say that at first it took quite a while to get interesting. The first half especially was not too eventful. It all changed in the last six minutes of the game though. Going into the 4th quarter Kansas City was down by, and in the last six minutes alone they were able to not only inch ahead, but find themselves leading by eleven points. Then again I guess it is kind of what the Chiefs are known for. I never realized how recognized and important the Superbowl commercials were until this year. It seemed kind of crazy to me that a company would spend close to 5.6 billion dollars on a Superbowl commercial. For the 98.2 million people watching the Superbowl last night I guess it is a smart investment though. My personal favorite commercial probably has to have been the Cheetos commercial, to the song “U Can’t Touch This,” because the excuse is so relatable, but along with this one I also liked the Rocket Mortgage Commercial with Jason Momoa.
Gianna Sticco (J. R. Masterman)
I didn’t watch all of the Super Bowl, but I did watch the halftime show. And the commercials. I loved Shakira and J-Lo’s performance, especially how much they killed it. They were flawless. But I also loved the commercials. My favorite was probably the one with Chris Evans and John Krasinski, because they are some of my favorite actors. Another one was the “Before Alexa” one with Ellen and DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, where they wonder about life before Alexa, which then proceeds to show how people did things back then. I also loved the Kate Sower commercial, because it was really inspirational for me.
Ian P (Philadelphia, PA)
It was really funny and I liked how it starred Ellen DeGeneres. I think the Super Bowl is really cool. It is fun to watch, and for many people, it is like a day off from the hard grind of life.
Aiden Rubin Sanxhaku (J. R. Masterman)
In my opinion, I felt that this year's Super Bowl was staler and fettle in comparison to previous years. Most of the first half was not as contested and I had just been waiting for the chiefs attack to trail in. Ultimately, I knew that the Chiefs would find a way to cap off a strong progressive attack after being down, as they have done the same in the past two games. The 49ers just weren't able to capitalize on Kansas City's lack of defense. To an extent, I may half felt that most of the commercials were more entertaining. Ultimately, I hope that in the future this tedious nature will change.
Brianna K. (J.R Masterman)
I didn’t watch the game on Sunday though I did watch the halftime show. Even though everyone in my family watched the super bowl I’m the one person in my family that doesn’t care for sports. I just much rather stay on my phone and watch youtube or take online quizzes. While my family was downstairs watching the game I stayed up in my room. I did however come down from my dark cave to watch the halftime show. I watch the halftime show every year because music is very important to me. I thought the halftime show this year was great. Both performers did a great job representing where they came from. I just loved how they each put their songs in a mash-up. My favorite part was when both Jennifer Lopez and Shakira performed together at once. I also loved how they had kids up on stage singing because that’s something you rarely see. All in all even though I didn’t watch the game I really enjoyed the halftime show.
Nora Perley (J.R. Masterman)
Every year, my favorite part of the Superbowl is the Halftime Show, which is the time I start to get excited about the game, but it wasn't just the content of the Halftime Show that affected me the most. I appreciated the tribute that Shakira and Jenifer Lopez included a tribute to Kobe Bryant during the halftime show, with at least 100 million people watching. I was touched when Jennifer Lopez's 11-year-old daughter, Emme, along with a children's choir, joined her on stage to sing "Let's Get Loud" while an overhead shot of the field showed a giant cross, which lit up in purple and yellow, the colors of the Los Angeles Lakers, in remembrance of Bryant's career, played from 1996 until 2016. At first, the tribute confused me, but now that I am looking back on it, I am so happy that Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna were remembered, and appreciated that night. In the words of Jennifer Lopez, " this is the truth that rings out the loudest ... family is what matters most," and I am really glad they decided to include this in last night's game.

To be honest, I’m really happy for Andy Reid winning his first Super Bowl. I can’t even imagine the thoughts that went through his mind last night after he won his first Super Bowl in 20+ years! My mom is a die-hard 49ers fan, so yes her heart was broken in half yesterday. It was stressful to watch thinking My friend would tease me the whole next day if the Chiefs won, and look what happened. There is a bigger reason why I hate the Chiefs so much. They chant that racist Native American chant with their arm, and it’s so flabbergasting this day in age that people are still so racist. This day in age, people around the U.S are so racist to people unlike their own kind. The good thing is that the Chiefs don’t have their mascot as something racist, but why can’t they change the cheer if they see how wrong this is. The halftime show was okay. To Be honest, I was not impressed with it. There was a lot of twerking and not kid appropriate. I don't know what Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were thinking, but the performance was terrible. The funny thing is-is that when Jennifer Lopez’s daughter an out, Jennifer actually put on appropriate clothes! The thing I was impressed though was the ads that were put up. Last year's ads weren’t that good, but this year’s were funny and impressive. My favorite was the Cheetos ad ,where the guys hands were dirty with Cheetos cheese, and the guy would come out of random places and say “can’t touch this”
Gavin E. (J.R. Masterman)
I loved the Super bowl this year. I wanted the chiefs to win very badly because they have not won a Super bowl in about 50 years. Also because I don't like the 49ers that much. But, yes i did watch the Super bowl. I like Patrick Mahomes a lot and I really wanted to see them win. I think the halftime show was ok. It wasn’t bad but I have seen better. My grandma loves Jennifer Lopez and I don’t mind because she is married to Alex Rodriguez which is one of my favorite baseball players of all time. And yes, the ads. I think the ads were amazing this year. My favorites were the Doritos Old Town Road one, the cheetos can't touch this, and my favorite was the Oikos bubble butt one. Overall, I am a huge fan of football and I think this Super bowl was great.
Katelyn C (J.R Masterman)
I didn’t watch the Super Bowl this year because I’m not really that interested in football even though I do like it. It's just that I felt like working on my website that I’m making and I also just wanted to watch some YouTube. It was just me and my mom in the house so it worked out because she didn’t want to watch it either.
Daniel Morillo (Fort Mill High School)
At first thought I was exited to watch the chiefs who haven't been to the Super Bowl in 50 years. And then I saw the first half and I was disappointed in the fact that both teams weren't playing as I expected them to. I was glad to see the Chiefs win but they played like it was a regular season game. the fourth quarter was close and then the chiefs pulled away. For the most part the big game was pretty uneventful. I hope next year is a lot better.
Julie (South Carolina)
I thought it was surprising. I wasn't really rooting for a certain team but I said that the Kansas City would win. I went to get ready for bed halfway through 4th quarter so i didn't really get to see the end of the game, but I heard that Kansas City came back and won the game. I thought the halftime show was fun but it was hard to go between both singers. I feel like both girls showed of they're culture very well. The Superbowl ads were like every year. Trying to be funny to get people attention. The google ad with the man asking for a recap about his wife was super heart touching. The Superbowl is the biggest football game of the year and everyone gets really hype for it because its the two teams that have made it that far with the best scores.
henry debbout (fortmill sc)
Usually these events have alot of hype before them and I feel that the nfl season kinda blew by and the game was very beat
Brianna Goudoras (Fort mill SC)
In my opinion I thought the super bowl this year was ok. I've never really been interested in football and the Superbowl but, They can get stressful at the end because the score was very close ans you didn't know who was gonna win. I personally didn't care who won I was just watching it for fun. The super bowl is a big thing in American culture. Every person who is a big football person or there favorite team is in the super bowl is playing everyone goes crazy. The super bowl has been going on for I believe 54 years now and its big in american culture today. People love the Superbowl.
bob (freewill)
it was kinda bad i did not like it because it was really loud and my dog would not stop barking
Mason Evans (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
The Super Bowl is the perfect time to get a point across. Millions of people around the world are watching, many more interested in the half-time show or the commercials than the game itself. As long as what is shown is unique, it will be remembered. Everyone knows “puppy monkey baby” from a couple of years ago because it was both unique and funny, but on the other side of things no one really remembers Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl 51 performance or Maroon 5’s performance last year. Sure, they may have been good performances, but did they provide a unique take on the half-time show? Not really. This all leads up to Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s half-time performance this year. They get uninterrupted time on-stage to both show their skills and bring light to any issue that the world currently struggles with. And they did both, and the two did not mix well. Pareles said that “[They] were superwomen, smiling pop conquistadors backed by phalanxes of dancers.” and said that they both proved their point and put on a show. But does J-Lo pole dancing and all of the performers on stage continuously taking of clothes prove a point in the right way? Do people want to remember how the singers’ “Puerto Rican pride” was shown by a scantily-clad Shakira and J-Lo dancing suggestively on stage?
Grace Cubbage (J.R. Masterman)
@Mason Evans Not only did we see amazingly skilled dancing and singing, but there was also a significant statement being made. Two strong, beautiful Latina women seized this moment to convey a powerful message. Children in cages is still very much a part of reality in the USA, and Puerto Rico, which is dealing with yet another natural disaster, is indeed a part of the United States and must be recognized as such. How they expressed themselves with their clothing and dance should not have made anyone feel offended, rather, it was their symbolic message that should have sparked outrage!

@Mason Evans I agree that the performance by Shakira and J-Lo was probably not the best way to share their heritage with the entire Nation watching. The performance didn’t accurately portray their culture, since Latin culture is more than sexualized dancing. On the other hand, their performance will definitely stand out due to those factors. You mentioned that certain performances, and in this case, halftime shows will stand out. I believe that the performance last night will be talked about for a while, so in many ways it was a success as well as unsuccessful, depending on how one views it.

@Keira McWilliams I highly disagree with you. Yes, I will agree that J-Lo and Shakira were wearing scandalous clothing. But if that's all anyone can notice from the fantastic performance, then that's their problem. Do you remember last year’s super bowl? The one where Adem Lavine took his shirt off and threw it in the crowd? I don’t remember people complaining about that! Either that's a huge sign of sexism, or Americans not knowing how to act when they see two stunning women, performing on national TV. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira had a spectacular performance. I was astonished by their performances, and I was clearly able to see that they are both strong, beautiful, Latina women.

I didn't really watch the Super Bowl but my mom did and I caught part of it every time I left my room. I watched the beginning when they sang the national anthem and the teams came in. I didn't watch the game but I did know that in the end, Kansas City won. I'm not really a football person but my mom was for Kansas City during the game. My mom seemed happy but I didn't really care about the Superbowl or what was going during that time.

I did watch the amazing comeback that millions will remember and it was a great one. I was rooting for the chiefs the whole game and they became victorious at the end of the long fought game. I wasn’t surprised at all because I knew Kansas cities offense was gonna top San Francisco’s defense it truly was a game to remember.

This year’s Super Bowl was a classic comeback story. Benjamin Hoffman reported on the game, “It was a game of momentum swings, but the last one went to the Chiefs, who entered the fourth quarter trailing by 10 points but proceeded to score three touchdowns over the course of just 5 minutes 1 second of game clock, overwhelming a San Francisco defense that had simply been hoping to hold on to a lead.” The game was fairly even throughout the first half which kept all fans on their toes. In the 4th quarter the Chiefs came together as a team. Their defense began to play more aggressively and started shutting down San Francisco. Mahomes on the offensive side led the Chiefs to three unanswered touchdowns to secure the win. After the game Mahomes was asked if he ever had doubt throughout the game to which he answered, “I mean we never lost faith — that’s the biggest thing.” Never losing faith showed Mahomes’s resilience as a player. It was surprising when the Chiefs scored three unanswered touchdowns. While the Chiefs had deficits in all of their playoff games it was unexpected for them to pull out the comeback in Super Bowl LIV, but they did it. Going into the game I expected the Chiefs to win. With young talent like Tyreek Hill, Patrick Mahomes, and Damien Williams it was inevitable that a Super Bowl Championship was on the way. This year’s Super Bowl showed that no matter what is happening, if you keep your head down and never lose faith then you can succeed.

@Ellis Stafford This was a for sure classic comeback story there really wasn’t a big underdog but all in all it was a great game. The Kansas City chiefs didn’t give up after that first field and they kept pushing.

I thought that this year's Super Bowl was pretty boring from the start with the score staying somewhat even throughout the first quarter. Then it started to pick up the pace and get pretty entertaining, and with Patrick Maholmes being the quarterback that he is it was not a surprise to see the Chiefs come back. The Chiefs coming back was pretty expected seeing as the Chiefs were playing hard even with their 10 point deficit. Maholmes said “I mean we never lost faith — that’s the biggest thing,” this showed how bad he truly wanted to win the Super Bowl. During the Super Bowl the throwing game of the 49’ers wasn’t working, but once they started to run the ball they were getting first down after first down. The Chiefs defense being as good as it is wasn’t even enough to stop these consecutive yard gains. Near the end of the game there was a good chance the Chiefs lost then out of nowhere they just started scoring, and the touchdowns were coming unanswered from the 49’ers and the, and the Chiefs ended the game with a win. Patrick Maholmes being the MVP of the game was no surprise seeing as he is their quarterback and he scored their first touchdown of the game. From the beginning of the match I thought the Chiefs would win their offense and defense are almost unmatched, and with the immense amount of pressure in each team I thought Maholmes would take it better. Overall the game was pretty entertaining and the outcome of the game was as expected.
