The photo below is a tank engine being tested, but I do also think that they are destroying manufactured goods from other countries or colonies. But my best inference is to see the capability of the tank with different materials left in a trail.
Usman Khan (New York)
This photo looks to be soldiers or an army testing the resilience and limits of a tank. This is because there are soldiers watching behind the tank, and the tank is running over seemingly unrelated objects piled at different heights, and of different material and strength. Extra information I can find in the photo is that to the far right, there is a man who is dressed in a fashion unrelated to the soldiers, almost like a businessman.
Kristian (canada)
This picture appears to be a British mk1 tank showing off it's capabilites in the photo during the first world war in Europe.
Usman Khan (New York)
@Kristian I agree! The rubble below the tank as well as the people surrounding it also led me to believe it is being tested for its limits and capabilities.
Blake (Kentucky)
What i saw in this picture is. that it is an old picture and people are lined up to fight. there is a tank so i thought that they were about to go to war. they was also running over things.that is what i saw in the picture.
Thomas (Minnesota)
I admit I am quite the history buff so my initial thought is that this photo was taken late September of 1915. If I had to guess where this photo was taken I’d say somewhere near the Somme river in France, shortly after the Somme offensive (the first ever tank battle). This battle saw minor territorial gains for the allied powers as the central powers had very few ways to counter the tanks. What I think is happening is that a coalition of British commonwealth soldiers took a position from the Germans. I think after they took this position they wanted to show off their new technology to either the camera or newly acquired POWs, and did so by gathering up and smashing the German supplies. In hindsight this would be stupid because the tanks were sensitive and often broke down. I think all of this for a few reasons. First off I can tell the soldiers in the background are wearing hats opposed to helmets, helmets weren’t worn until the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Secondly the tank is obviously very old, although it does look like a fairly modern model of tank compared to the typical British Mark 1. Lastly, and this is the weakest point, the buildings in the background look like 1915 France. It’d be very helpful to get another look at the other side of the tank, because it looks to modern to be a British Mark 1, the town also looks to intact to be in the middle of WWI, and the soldiers look a little too healthy if they have spent nearly a year in the trenches. Maybe it's Doughboys?
Cassie (Canada)
A tank is crushing a bunch of pots and pans and behind it are a bunch of military men and the photo is also black and white so it makes me think it’s one of the world wars. This photo makes me wonder why they were destroying lots and pans were they’re testing it or just having fun

Teagan (La Mesa)
What I think is going on is that there’s a small war tank that was used by the Germans in the 1900’s and that the Germans are all lined up In front of the new tank. What makes me say this is that a couple of days ago I was learning about German war tanks and one of them looked exactly like the one in this photo. What I could find in the picture was what looked like some tin cans and metal pots and also a town behind them.
Jayson.D'Errico (EWA BEACH)
In the picture I think it was about a militmilitary is destroying pots and buckets and other objects that belong to people with a tank to show authority and maybe threatening them.
Wesley Ramos (Ewa Beach)
This picture is taking place in World War 2 because of the coloration of the picture and the soldiers in the background. In the picture, the tank is crushing metal belongings so that the enemies might not use them to build weapons. I think this because the tank is driving over them and because the soldiers are guarding the metals.
Joshua Lim (Ewa Beach)
As observing the picture it looks like soldiers testing their new army vehicle by breaking hard objects such as metals. This picture shows that how strong their equipment is and how long can it last during a war. I guess that this picture was taken during the 1900's before that start of World War 1.
Danny Sugita (Ewa Beach, South Side)
I think the picture is to help show that this military is more powerful and that they will have a stronger military in the long run during the war
Lex Perkins (Ewa Beach)
By analyzing this photo, it looks like a tank is crushing various metal objects to be used to create more weaponry. Since the photo has no color, I assume this takes place during World War One or World War Two.
Danny Sugita (Ewa Beach, South Side)
By looking at this picture I think it is to help show the power of the first official tank. Which they would later use to help themselves win in the next battle.
Mason Lopez (Ewa Beach)
I believe that this photo was taken place in around 1900-1920 and Americans are showing sherifs of multiple towns the new lightweight tank that has just recently been developed. I said that this photo was taken around the early 1900's because of the quality of the photo, the tank, the way the houses look in the background of the photo, and the uniforms that the soldiers/sherifs are wearing. I could tell that the tank in the photo looks similar to the Renault FT-17 which was created in 1917. With this information and all of the other factors in the photo, I could tell that Americans are representing how good their new lightweight tank is by making like the trash is like rough terrain and seeing how quick the tank gets through it.
Carl Aurelio (Ewa Beach)
I think there is a war going on. Seeing a tank makes me think there is a war going on. I can also see it’s an old picture.
Carl Aurelio (Ewa Beach)
I think a war is going on in this picture. Seeing a tank makes me think there is a war going on. This picture was probably taking in the 1900s.
Justin (Lagunero)
The picture seems to take place in a world war somewhere in Europe. It also looks like the place has been invaded by having so many soldiers in the area and destroying scrap metal to make more resources. If it wasn't invaded then these scraps of metal would be destroyed in factories.
Tiffany Bowman (Ewa Beach)
From what I have analyzed in this photo, the first probable reason is this is during the prohibition period the reason being this tank looks fairly modern and new coming from the World War 1 era. The tank is crushing a pile of buckets with a crowd of men surrounding it. They seem intrigued and having a good time. This must mean the tank is new to all of them. The reason for the tank and this photo is to show the brute strength of this armored vehicle. And to show off the crushing capability that this has on the modern era appliances from Ww1.
John Mare De La Cruz (Ewa)
Get soldiers near one tank and the tank running over some metal.
Marvin-Jade Sigue (Ewa Beach)
This picture looks like soldiers are being demonstrated how strong their equipment or military is. This is a moral boost and a boast to show the other forces the military capabilities of their equipment. I'm guessing this picture took place in the early 1900's.
Danny Sugita (Ewa Beach, South Side)
@Marvin-Jade Sigue Ilike your inference I was also thinking of something similar in mines. I do like how you draw a conclusion that the tank running over the metal is supposed to show how power the tank is. (P.s like jam Apex Tn?)
Leanne Rose Dulatre (Ewa Beach)
It looks like soldiers and rich men watching a tank run over through some essentials, such as steel buckets, hose, pipes, and mini water tanks owned by, possibly, poor people who are near there - I thought of this (about the poor people) because of where the rich men on the right side and some soldiers are looking towards.
Raiden Yamanaka (Ewa beach)
By looking at the image i can tell that the tank is smashing the metal because they could be testing the tracks on the tank.
Chezae Pascua (Ewa Beach)
After looking at this photo, I can see a tank and some soldiers probably taken in the early 1800's because the color and details of the picture. I can also see some buildings in the background where a fight could have happened and this group had won the battle.
Carl Aurelio (Ewa Beach)
@Chezae Pascua I agree because I also think it was a war mainly because there is a tank
Shaquille Calub (Ewa Beach)
By looking and analyzing this photo, there is military from their uniform. They are also watching an earlier model of a tank, probably testing it by running over metallic objects. And because the picture is colored black and white, it's really old and might've been taken around the time of World War 1.
Joshua Zammert (Ewa Beach)
@Shaquille Calub I agree with your analysis of this being apart of military testing from World War 1.
Kainoa Sumaillo (Ewa Beach)
After looking at this Picture, I'm assuming that the tank in the photo was a great use to the people in the background, but it is no longer functional. I think that because the people in the background seem to look like that their wearing military outfits and there is a crowd of them around the tank in the line of garbage.
Jayven Ledesma (Ewa Beach)
According to the photo, I can infer that this is an old photo of an army. I can tell due to the photo quality, and as well as their uniforms and the tank. What may be happening in this photo is the army is testing the tanks traveling ability by driving over a pile of metal barrels. The soldiers seem to be spectating to look for any discrepancies in the tanks traveling ability.
John Ryan Cacacho (Ewa Beach)
After observing the image, I came to the conclusion that this takes place during 1800's-1900's. I'm not sure which war it is but it takes place during the war. I think that they are destroying materials and what makes me say that is that there is a tank running over the materials, maybe because they don't want the enemy to use it. I can also see that they are wearing the same uniforms, meaning that they are in the same battalion.
Leanne Rose Dulatre (Ewa Beach)
@John Ryan Cacacho I didn't even think of it that way, great observation. I would agree with the materials being destroyed, but I don't think they were owned by the enemy mainly because there are rich men along with the soldiers, so I think they are owned by the poor, although I respect your observation.
Joshua Lim (Ewa Beach)
@John Ryan Cacacho That's a good observation but i think that they're destroying the objects to test if their equipment is strong enough to last in a war.
Jayven Ledesma (Ewa Beach)
According to the photo, I can infer that this is an old photo of an army due to the uniforms that are being worn, as well as the tank and the old photo quality. It seems like they are testing the tanks capability of traveling over different terrains by going over a pile of metal barrels.
Jaime Zilleruelo (Ewa Beach)
After analyzing the image, I can see that it is one of the first tanks, due to the type of photo and clothing of the people. I also think that the military is testing the operation of the tank when passing over metals.
Shaquille Calub (Ewa Beach)
@Jaime Zilleruelo I agree that the military is testing the operation of the tank, since they are watching the tank as it runs over hard metallic objects.
Isaiah Turner (Ewa Beach)
By looking at this photo, it seems that the soldiers are testing the first model of a tank by having it going threw the metal containers. I can also say that there are soldiers in the background.
Leanne Rose Dulatre (Ewa Beach)
@Isaiah Turner Great observation, although I disagree on some parts, I think those metal containers are owned by the poor and are being destroyed for some reason, I speculated this because of where some of the people in the crowd are facing towards, if the tank was for a test then I'm sure the people crowding it would have been looking towards it. Also, it doesn't take that many people to do a test on such, at least I don't think so, but I respect your observation.
Raiden Yamanaka (Ewa beach)
@Isaiah Turner I agree that they could be testing the first model of a tank by having it going threw the metal container because by looking at the photo everyone is looking at the tank going on top the metal containers.
Joshua Zammert (Ewa Beach)
From the photo, I can see that this could be a photo from the early 1900's, possibly from WWI due to the uniforms the soldiers are wearing and the tank that was most commonly used during WWI. This may be to show the tank to the US Army for potential service.
Kainoa Sumaillo (Ewa Beach)
@Joshua Zammert I also believe that the photo looks like this took place in WW1
Peter manuma (Ewa Beach)
After Analyzing the picture, I see that there is a military presents and what seems to be an earlier version of the tank. The people are testing out the tank by driving it over metal bins and containers. I can see that there is military because the people watching are uniformed.
Kyan Montemayor (Ewa Beach)
After a quick analysis of this photo, I can infer that these people are indeed soldiers who are watching this tank crush these metal bins, containers, and other objects. I also infer that this is some sort of test to see if the tank is effective in some way.
Marvin-Jade Sigue (Ewa Beach)
@Kyan Montemayor Your observation was very concrete and well-said. I agree that this is some sort of test or demonstration to show military superiority.
Noah Santiago (Ewa Beach)
After analyzing this photo, I can infer that this big machine is a prototype of a tank, and they are testing it by crushing a bunch of metal objects to see how well it can perform. I can also infer that the group of people watching the tank is the military because they are all wearing uniforms.
John Ryan Cacacho (Ewa Beach)
@Noah Santiago I agree with your statement, I also think that they are in the military also because they are wearing the SAME uniform
Vincent (Ewa)
By the looks of this photo, it seems to feature an early version of a military tank, there are soldiers surrounding the tank that are crushing what seems to be containers.
Noah Santiago (Ewa Beach)
@Vincent I agree with your observation because I also think that this is an early version of a tank.
Sean (Ewa)
By telling from the photo, A group of soldiers are gathered around a tank that is running over buckets. I think they are doing that because maybe they want to break down the buckets into smaller material to make something.
Sean (Ewa)
By telling from the photo, a group of soldiers are gathered around a tank that is crushing metal buckets. I think they are doing that because maybe they want to break down the metal bucket to smaller material to build something.
Jazz ugaitafa (Hawai’i)
The pictures show men that are in the military and a tank, as well as the tank smashing stuff therefore in my mind I believe that they are destroying those objects because it may have cause some type of conflict that they needed to get rid of or in other words destroy.
Raiden Yamanaka (Ewa beach)
@Jazz ugaitafa I agree with u that the objects they are destroying may cause some type of conflict because running over the metal containers is one way to destroy or get rid of metal containers
Joshua Lim (Ewa Beach)
@Jazz ugaitafaI I agree with your observation that they're destroying this objects due to a conflict, but i think that these group of army are just going around place to place just to break peoples everyday items that they use to survive and because of that it resulted a conflict around the world.
Jason (Patrick)
The image seems to be of a demonstration, as the soldiers look relaxed and observing the tank roll over what looks like materials for a distillery, based on the little tubing and conical shapes of some of the objects. The uniforms and tank design give context clues to the era being sometime after World War 1, but before WW2, and assuming the parts are for a distillery, date this image to sometime during the prohibition, with the image being of dramatic destruction of a distillery.
Zachariah Good (Hawaii)
I think this is a military unit watching metal pots get smashed so they can make equipment out of the scrap metal
Kainoa Sumaillo (Ewa Beach)
@Zachariah Good I agree with you that the people are watching the pots get smashed
Carl Aurelio (Ewa Beach)
@Zachariah Good I agree that they could be watching metal pots get smashed to make equipment
Sheldon (Ewa Beach)
When looking at this picture it seems that they are using a tank to crush all of these materials.
John Ryan Cacacho (Ewa Beach)
@Sheldon I agree with your statement, i think they are crushing the materials so that the enemies won't be able to use it.
Marvin-Jade Sigue (Ewa Beach)
@Sheldon I agree with your statement, but I feel that there is more to the picture than what you have stated because there has to be a reason to why they are crushing those materials.
Anthony Marcos (Ewa Beach)
Judging from the clothing the people are wearing they seem to be military personal watching the sheer power and force of the new invention that is the tank. I can assume this because of the color of image being black and white meaning that this was perhaps taken in the 1800s to the 1900s which is around the time that the tank was invented and it was used in WWI.
Noah Santiago (Ewa Beach)
@Anthony Marcos I like your observation because I also think that the group of people watching is the military because of how they dress.
Anthony (Ewa Beach)
They are using tanks to destroy lots of metal and plastic material in the 1900s
Lex Perkins (Ewa Beach)
@Anthony I didn't notice the plastic until I read your comment.
Aaron (Ewa Beach)
In the picture It looks like years ago there was a war since there are soldiers and tanks in this picture and judging by the color of black and white it was really old
Shaquille Calub (Ewa Beach)
@Aaron I agree with you, because since the picture is colored black and white it might've been taken in WW1 which also means that the photo is really old.
Lex Perkins (Ewa Beach)
@Aaron I agree with your statement of there being a war because of the men in matching attire.
Kaihe (Ewa)
I think that their going into war in this picture and it looks like a long time ago. I think their in war because in the picture I see that their all wearing the exact same clothes. Something else that I think is happening is their smashing the pots to make ammunition out of the metal.
Iyanna (Ewa Beach)
I see that the military are just watching a tank crush buckets
Janseen (Ewa beach)
I don’t really know what’s going on in this picture but I think there to get rid of the evidence of some sort during that conflict.
Joshua garcia (Ewa beach)
Military destroying metal bins or waste they are no longer using
Sean (Ewa)
@Joshua garcia I like your observation because they probably got rid of the buckets because they had new supplies coming in and they had too much buckets
Siah (Ewa Beach)
I have no clue everyone’s just starting at the buckets getting ran over.
Ashton (Ewa Beach)
It looks like it was maybe a war or some conflict going on at that time , looks like 1800’s or 1900’s
Sean (Ewa)
@Ashton I like your observation because they probably needed to material that the buckets have to make something
Ashton (Ewa Beach)
It looks like it was a war or there was conflict going on, looks like it was in the 1800’s or 1900’s
Riyan (1020 everridge drive SW)
In this picture there is a tank with a lot of pots. The tank is squishing the pots.I belive that in this case the pots were used to do something bad and the town folks think that they should discard it forever with a tank. The towns people are standing around the edges and seeing the pots get squished. There some troops or soldiers that are near the tank leading that maybe there was a illegal act of some sort that led soldiers to stop it in the town.Due to the pictures colors it was taken some ti me around the 1800 to the 1900s. This is probably for metal or something bad is going on. There are some bulidings in the background.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
There is definitely some kind of war going on or at least this is on a military base because there are soldiers and a tank. I think what may be happening is that they are flattening those metal barrel things using the tank to create flat metal sheets as they’re easier to use to make things with than cylinders
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This black and white picture has multiple things going on, all at one time. To start, the setting is in a war town, possibly a hundred years ago, more or less. There are lines of army men shown in their uniforms, watching this machine. The machine appears to be a tank, that was probably used in a war. These men are watching this tank run over many metal buckets, and none of them appear to be happy. Because of the possible time period this could be taken place in, I believe this is during the prohibition. The prohibition was a time period where the making of all liquors was banned. These metal cans were most likely used to make the alcohol, therefore they had to be destroyed. This action was probably overseen by the US government, so that explains why the soldiers are watching it.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
In this picture it looks like soldiers from a time of black and white cameras, maybe late 1800s to early 1900s, are looking at a heap of metal. I think these soldiers are looking at all this scrap metal because they are at war, possibly in World War I. I think this because in times of world war in the 1900s the U.S urged it's citizens who are unable to fight to help in the war effort by collecting scrap metal that can be used to make tools necessary for the war effort. I believe that the soldiers are in maybe a factory and are looking at the factory collection of scrap metal that will help them in the war effort. A question to ask though is whether or not this is in America or a different country, that urged it's citizens to collect war bonds as well.
erwin rommel (Normandy)
i think that on Jan. 16, 1919 — more than a year before women could vote nationwide — the teetotalers achieved their ultimate goal: The Eighteenth Amendment, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors” anywhere within the United States, was ratified. anks being used to destroy stills and other moonshining equipment in Newport, Ky. The military equipment was “used to crush the contraband articles into fragments.” Circa
Oscar Limon-Zarzosa (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Crushing the competition. I believe that this picture is demonstrating the power of the tank. They are probably new to the tank and they are being explained what it can do. I wonder if the items being crushed have any relation to the situation. For example, are the items prized possessions of the people they just fought or are they random pieces of metal they found lying around.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Oscar Limon-Zarzosa Thats very interesting, I thought maybe they were recycling a broken tank or some kind of tractor, but it very well could possibly be the soldiers looking at the power of a tank!
Kevin O’Malley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
At fist sight I had no idea wha was going on in this picture. Why would a tank be running over metal? Obviously there has to be a reason. Based off how old the tank is I think this is during WW1. My first guess for why the army would be doing this is that they they were showing off the sheer power of the tank. This conclusion makes since, this army wants all the enemies to know just what they will be going up against, a new technology of the time that was sure to spark fear in the them. However, with more time I thought of what would happen to what the tank was going over and it reminded me of the scorched earth tactic used by Russia against France. I think that the real point of this was to destroy everything in that town, and the only way to destroy the metal was with something as powerful as the tank. By doing this, and destroying everything in the town they were in, they will leave nothing of use behind for the opposing army or the people who might still be in the war stricken town.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Kevin O’Malley If they were destroying everything in the town, don't you believe that there would be more than just metal things being crushed?
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Headline: What is This Tank Being Used For? This picture represents more than just a tank. It represents the turn of the First World War. After tanks were mass produced it was a whole different style of fighting. The tank seems to be crushing large buckets, as if it is showing off. They were most likely showing what a tank has the ability to do. Its strengths of crushing anything in its path or the dangers of rolling right over someone.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Justin Bolsoy I never thought of the tank as a showing item. Good thinking!
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Justin Bolsoy that’s very interesting! What makes you think that it’s definitely WW1 and if it is just for show, why would they even advertise them?
Kurt Brungraber (Chambersburg, PA)
The uniforms and the tank both seem WWI era, which places them in Europe. To me, the metal "junk" being run over by the tank is, in fact, absinthe distillery equipment. Beginning in 1915 in France there was an absinthe Prohibition, similar to the United States' broader Prohibition beginning in 1920.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Kurt Brungraber This is quite interesting to me. I am intrigued by how much you know. It is actually quite surprising what can be concluded with just a picture Almost like it is telling us something. It doesn't have to me motivational or anything, just as long as it is saying something. I looked at the metal and simply thought it was just crushed pots and pans for demonstration purposes.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Kurt Brungraber I agree, I believe this picture most likely was taken during World War II as well, do you think this is an American force?
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Kurt Brungraber that’s very smart! You need a good knowledge of history to think something like that, very impressive!
Georgia (Ltc)
In this image there is a group of men watching a tank drive over and crush what looks like scraps or rubbish as the materials are all broken and rusty. The men watching look as if they are part of some army as they are all wearing matching uniforms and hats, the men look very young as they stand by watching.
Emily Skane (Hoggard High School Wilmington NC)
In this image, there are groups of means watching what I assume is an army vehicle crush metals. I also notice that all the men in the back are in uniform. This makes me think that this is an army destroying all the metal they can find to make something most likely guns or other materials to help fight in the war. If they are not crushing the ore for supplies, I would say maybe they are testing the tank on its ability to move on different surfaces.
Bryce (Mclean, VA)
It looks like they are about to crush a bunch of useless metal. It could be for entertainment, or a way to compact their metal waste, or both. There are plenty of men there to watch, and a few businessmen on the right.
Miss Russell (Alpine Public School)
They are destroying materials so the enemies won't have anything left to fight with. They are getting rid of all of their stuff that they don't want anymore. The year is an important piece of information, we think it was a really long time ago.
Emily Skane (Hoggard High School Wilmington NC)
@Miss Russell I like your take on saying it was to prevent enemies from getting that material. I agree with your point that is was a very long time ago maybe 30 years even.@Miss Russell, I like your take on saying it was to prevent enemies from getting that material. I agree with your point that is was a very long time ago maybe 30 years even.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Miss Russell I find that interesting that they would be destroying it so the enemies won't be able to get a hand on it. Why would the enemy need a bunch of pots and buckets when they have guns, tanks, artillery, and much more destructive weapons. Thinking on top of that, maybe this wasn't to destroy their weapons, but just their basic supplies. No man wants to bathe without a tub or cook without a pot.
Anasta (Russia)
I suppose that this photo had made in 30-s years of twenty century. I see here a tank. This is a very old model. Maybe one of the first tanks. They had been made after the First World War. But at the Second World War tanks were more modern. Many men in army uniforms were standing and looking at the tank. I think they are American soldiers because they wear American military hats. Many metal details of some apparats lay on the ground. There are big metal boilers with covers, tubes, and spirals. I think it was an apparatus for the making of moonshine. And the tank is ready to crush them. So I think it is a famous campaign against alcohol in the USA wich called Prohibition. And this photo shows us fighting with the production of alcohol in the USA in 30-s years.
Miss T (Somerset Middle School)
People are watching the stuff get destroyed. Taken during the WWI era from the model of the tank, it is also a French tank. Most likely testing out the tank (durability etc.). The metal is old fuel tanks... Possibly a training camp as the soldiers are all watching and there seems to large buildings in the background.
Anasta (Russia)
@Miss T, I don't think that this is testing of tank because tank is testing by bad roads, ditches and stones. And here are only broken metal boilers. I think solders wants only to destroy them.
Miss T (Somerset Middle School)
Looks like a war stricken town or city. Something was destroyed/punishment. The army is decomposing metal to create something. Soldiers are watching the machine break down the metal to see what it does. The tank might be new and they are testing it/durability. Possibly in WW1. It is clearly old because the photo is not in color. it looks different from tanks today so it might be an early model.
Miss T (Somerset Middle School)
There are soldiers so there is a war, probably world war 2. or the Cold War (because most tanks were not as developed) They might be testing the tanks. They may be smashing the metal to use. The business man may be buying the tank. Could be their enemies stuff. It looks like they are on a base, there are no roads, so maybe not houses.
david A (cms)
testing a tank
Miss T (Somerset Middle School)
Early recycling. Mini tank running over trash. They might be testing the tank to see what it can drive over. Probably during World War 1. :)
Toby Rawlins (Grand River Academy)
This Picture contains a French Renault FT-17 Light Tank sitting on multiple cans in front of either American or French Soldiers. This may have been taken when the FT-17 was being introduced for use late WW1. Showing off how strong it is in terms of handling rough terrain.
Anniya Curtis (Ridgepoint high school)
In this picture they are crushing a lot of garbage during WW1
Colin CarGuy (GRA)
@Anniya Curtis I belive that this was to test a tank and it's abilities for rough terrain
kareem (Canada)
the amricans soliders made this in 1918 it was made to fight in world war 1 but wasent sent so insted in ww2
Bryce (GRA)
@kareem In WW2 the style of war was much different. They used trench warfare during WW2.
Tesnim (Canada)
i think this was taken in end of WW1. theres rundown and a old tank thats running over alot of garbage.
Yifeng (GRA)
@Tesnim Running through garbage is right, yet what do you think they were destroying it for?
Abdullah (canada)
this tank is called Renault FT from Paris in the year 1918 these are american soldiers that made this tank but never got to use it in war. they were testing if it can destroy metal trash.
Pinto (GRA)
@Abdullah I really liked how specific you got with the details and shared information that i had never heard before. I thought that this picture was during the war but I was surprised to learn that this was in fact just testing. Thank you for sharing this information.
Nick j (Gra)
@Abdullah I agree with you on that Abdullah. It could also be them testing something for a new era of tanks that they can be making.
Adam (Canada)
It is American solders looking at a french tank called the Renault FT to adopt into the American military the tank was developed in 1918 but it wasn’t developed in time for ww1
shivam (canada)
i think that in the picture it shows the Renault FT tank that was made in 1918 maybe where gave to the american solders to use in war or when they need it for something or maybe the Renault FT was made in world war 1 but was ready for was after the world war 1 ended
Keira (Canada)
I think this picture was taken at the end of WW1. It looks like the people that are in the picture are solders. Also looks like they were trying to test out their tank for some reason.
Matej (Canada)
I think it is Renault ft it was made in 1918 it was tested but then the war ended so they could not use the tank the tank is from France Paris and the soldiers were american. The people dressed in black were business men or maybe the secret service. They were testing it on a house or they were testing it on metal bins/plastic bins. Also ropes
Grant (Grant, Montana)
We thing the time period is WWI based on the tank style and uniforms. We know there was a shortage of materials for tanks so may they are recycling the metal for tanks and such. The weather looks cold and cloudy and foggy. The scrap metal does look like it could be used to make something like explosives.
Walter (NC)
a tank running over confiscated moonshine stills
Jose (sms)
They are testing their tanks for war or other military purpose. They might have woken up and found the tank there for no reason. It could be a new type of tank they made.
luru (bietigheim-bissingen)
On the picture you can see a tank going over a bunch of metal buckets. It is crushing them while people watch at it. The people are all men, there is no women there. All of the people wear some kind of cowboy hat, a shirt or a coat and pants. The picture is not taken in colors but it is taken in a pretty high quality. None of the people is happy or smiling in any way. But there is also another group of people that looks like it has more money and they are all laughing and watching in another direction. The metal that the tank is crushing seem to be some kind of gardening tools. I could assume that this is some kind of a way for people to show the people watching that they are not allowed to garden anymore or something similar. I don't really have much clues, but I would say that the people are not watching this very happily and that they don't want these tools to be crushed.
kebab gra (Austinburg)
@luru I really like how you've described the image, they were really close to the correct details. You've also expanded on what you thought the image portrayed. This is a tank destroying confiscated moonshine equipment.
Rebecca (SMS)
The soldiers are watching the tank crush the metal bins and pales being crushed by the tank. It could be recycling of old scraps from the war. It could also be a test run for the tank, and the soldiers are there just incase something goes wrong.
Landon Powell (SMS)
In this picture, the tank looks like it is trying to show off in front of soldiers by running over buckets and old metal scraps. The tank is a WW1 tank and those men do not look very modern so it must have been taken a long time ago, it is also black and white. I can also see houses in the background so it must be in a small town. The buckets are attached to some kind of rope so running it over is the plan.
Keaton (ol son)
In this picture, I think that police are destroying a still that they have gathered and found from the bootleggers. A still is used to make moonshine and I think the police have found these and they are destroying them so the men cant make more.It looks to be during the prohibition when you weren't allowed to sell or make liquor.
Toby Rawlins (Grand River Academy)
@Keaton seems to be more accurate but why use a light French tank?
Austin (SMS)
In this picture, the men are using a WW1 Tank to smash moonshine barrels. The men are wearing uniforms and police hats.
DeAnna (sms)
To me it appears that the soldiers are finding stills in old towns, and are destroying them because it is against the law to make moonshine.
Brynna (SMS)
In this picture it looks like there's an army tank and the military standing around while watching the tank crush the metal pots. There is a house in the background, so I think the pots came from houses. Maybe this is a tradition because the military and citizens and there, or they won a war and upgraded to better pots.
Colin CarGuy (GRA)
@Brynna I believe that the tank is crushing moonshine equipment as moonshine is illegal. I also believe that it was a statement against the pro alcohol movement, as all the men were looking at the act with justie in their eyes
Colin CarGuy (GRA)
@Brynna I belive that the tank is crushing moonshine equipment as moonshine is illegal.
Jacob (SMS)
I think this is a world war one tank and they are getting rid of garbage. THey are using the tank to flatten it out and save room or possibly use it for other things like armor etc. That is what I think is going on in this picture.
Silvana (Lisbon)
Given the looks of this tank (https://www.tankmuseum.org/museum-online/vehicles) and the monochrome photography, I reckon it's sometimes during WW1. I'd say they are testing out the tank. According to an article on the website history.com (if true - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-tank-produced), at the beginning when tanks were first produced, to keep the project secret from enemies, "production workers were reportedly told the vehicles they were building would be used to carry water on the battlefield" - maybe this explains the water barrels.
Hannah (New York)
Looking at a rundown or old tank and garbage. Or destroying the tank.
Hayden (New York)
They are using a tank to destroy tin things so they can test it for war. I see men watching in uniforms, tin things, a tank, rope. I wonder if the test is successful?
Felicity (NY)
In this photo soldiers are watching as a tank destroys different metal pieces, most likely to test the tank. I’m thinking it’s World War One because that’s when many new weapons were used for war.
chloé (new york)
i think it looks likes a tank destroying buckets and cans. the men look like there in the military. i wonder if they are in trouble because sometimes you get harsh punishments in the military.
Serena (New York)
In this picture you can see a tank crushing many Tin or metal things. Around the tank many soldiers are standing and watches as this happens. This could be happening because they want to destroy these things for some reason. On the other hand the tank looks old and broken so maybe they are viewing and old broken tank.
PTB (NY)
The tank is running over tins, and people are watching. I think this is during a war because they’re dressed up and their is a tank.
Marissa (New York)
In this picture I can infer that all of these men in uniforms are soldiers. In this picture I can see soldiers standing around a tank that is crushing objects.
Mrs. Cole (New York)
I see a tank destroying metal objects while men in uniform look on. I think this is wartime due to the tank/uniforms. I wonder what era this is and why the objects being crushed.

This is actually a ww1 French tank with American soldiers
Carlee (PHS)
Soldiers are testing a tank by crushing lots of tin things. This is before a war, probably WWI. All the soldiers are watching.
Kailey MacDowell (Phs)
I think what's happening is it's the end of WW1 and the people are burning a tank that was used. Everyone is watching the tank and there's also a lot of other trash around it.
Julia (Nebraska)
I think this picture is of military men looking at buckets and a tank after a war. They look like they are looking at the stuff thinking about how they defeated the dictator.
Eden (PHS)
what it looks like is this is the era during world war one. the tank and the soldiers and the quality of this picture, it looks older so im guessing that it is older. i think they just liberated a town and are posing for a freedom picture.
Jozlyn (PHS)
The soldiers morn while looking at an old war tank, it was probably used in a previous war.
Sami A. (LCMS)
First of all, this picture takes place during World War II. I know this because the people in the picture appear to be wearing the hats that the Nazi’s. They also look like they are soldiers because they are all in uniform and some of them have what looks like guns attached to their belts. Secondly, in this picture, they could be rolling over and destroying items that were left by the Jews when they had to leave their homes. I know this because some of the people watching look happy that they are doing this, and it makes sense that the Nazi’s would be destroying the Jews’ belongings. Finally, I can tell that this is not the original picture. This is a picture taken of another picture. I know this because there appears to be damage to the bottom of the picture. It looks like there is a stain on it and there is a rip in the bottom right corner.
Melana (Colorado)
What is going on in this picture? - This picture is obviously taken a while back just going off of the quality of the picture. In the bottom right corner there is a rip in the photo. Also, for those of you that don’t know much about tanks, this tank is from the 1917-1918’s that was used in WW1 by the Americans, it’s called the M1917. This picture is taken to show the pride America has over their tank. What do you see that makes you say that? - The tank is clearly posed in a way to show off its design: the barrel pointed towards the front and the tank propped on top of a hill of scrap metal. The Americans were proud to say that their tank, the M1917, was able to handle even the roughest terrain as resembled here as they pilled up a ton of metal scraps for it to tread over. What more can you find? - The men behind the tank are most likely soldiers. All eyes are on the tank showing that their attention is on the tank and that is where they want the viewer of the picture to look too. The tank is also placed in front of the soldiers which causes the viewer of the photo to look at it first then everything that surrounds it.
Jonah (Virginia)
@Melana, this actually looks like to me a French Renault FT-17 if you look closely at the rear of the tank.
Melana (Colorado)
@Jonah if you look at the soldiers uniform, they are soldiers from America, based in Texas.
Mrs. McD's 7th grade Lang Arts (VA)
We think the men are soldiers because they are in uniforms. Maybe it's during WWII and we don't think it is in the US. The tank is crushing buckets either to recycle the metal or maybe it's during Prohibition and they are crushing the illegal stills.
Jonah (Virginia)
those are actually ww1 Americans looking at a French tank, so it could be in America.
Colette (Denver)
What is going on in this picture? In the picture the tank is rolling over what looks to be pots and other metal items, while soldiers stand by and watch, most likely during a war. Possibly, rolling over the items is one of the soldiers tasks as they work for their country; maybe like how during the Holocaust the Nazis burned books. What do you see that makes you say that? A tank, pots and metal, and many soldiers. What more can you find? The background suggests the setting of a neighborhood. One could infer the ‘pots’ came from the homes in the neighborhood. There are also people on the far right, wearing not the soldier hats but top hats. They must have a different role or none at all.
violetta (SMS)
I predict that there is a lot of supplies on the ground because people do not need it. If people do not need the itimes the tank goes over all over those thangs. Then they use the items for some damages that probably happened in a war.

This picture was probably shot at tje beginning of the 20th century. There is a tank crushing buckets, maybe to test it, or for an inauguration. It also maybe takes place in Canada because of the hats).
Adon (sms)
They made a minither tank. They are testing the tank by rolling over the trash. They are doing there testing in small town. All the men are there to make sure all goes as planned. They are doing it with metal because they can turn it into bullets or other weapons.
austin (sms)
I think this is when the pictures where were black and white during WWI, and their testing a tank to see if it will run over the barbed wire. But they are not using barbed wire incase it doesnt run it over. They could also be doing it to get metal to build another tank. This could also be after WWI where they made Germany get rid of almost all their army but, 100000, and they decided to keep a tank for fun.
Julia (SMS)
This picture looks like it was taken back in the 1900's. It looks like the people in the backround are soilders, and they're watching a tank crush some metal. Maybe the tank is crushing the metal because its left over products from the war, and they dont need them.
Dominiq (sms)
What I think is what going on in this picture. The army testing there first two man tank for either world war 1 or 2. The army is testing how good it can run over metal. The military people look German. They are watching to see how the test goes. This seems to be germany since they are the first one to invent a 2 man tank. It may be a M1917.
Isabella (SMS)
This picture is a very old picture, and I can tell because it is in black and white. The men are dressed like they are heading to war or are in the war. There are men watching the machine crush some bins and buckets. There might be people in the machine, and they are controlling it. I also think that the people are gathered around it because the machine might be new to them since it is back in the day. I think that the metal was used in WW1, and now that it is over they are crushing it with that machine.
Paradice (SMS)
I think that these people are using an army tank to crush some supplies that they might not need anymore. Maybe these people are part of the army, and they are using the army tank to help them use some of these supplies that they need for the army. It looks like there are some wires and buckets that they are crushing. There is also a spring, and it looks like there is a church or some kind of building in the background.
Mrs. Barrett's Group (Batavia, NY)
Paige - There is a bucket, people and a tank that shoots. It has people in it. There is a house or a church. There are wires. The tank is sitting on buckets, crushing the buckets. There is also a spring and the men are wearing hats. Kailey - I think it's in the old times. It's way back in the 1900's. I think that's had to smash down all their metal and stuff that they weren't using to make it something else. Yaomy - there was a tank and that was smashing the buckets. They don't need it anymore and then they can build other things with it. There is men that look like they ride horses. They look like a cowboy.
Colette (Denver)
@Mrs. Barrett's Group Your idea of recycling is an interesting one. Would the people in the photo be soldiers if they were recycling?
Kai (SD)
looks like the men are watching an military tank smash objects.
John (Oregon, USA)
@Kai Yup, you're right on. World War I tank with some soldiers in training who will see the tank in action when they make it to the front.
cody (south dakota)
in this picture it shows men in uniforms, and theres a tank in the picture.i think there in the military
Izzy J (LCMS)
This picture is very old and sad. I know this because the picture is in black and white and nobody's smiling, everyone has a straight face. This is an army setting or during war time. I know this because all the men are in old military uniforms and they are all men. Also, there is a tank in the picture and nobody had tanks except the military. They are destroying buckets and giant candles. I know this because they are using the tank to crush buckets and candles, they are all standing and watching. Therefore, I know that this picture is old and they are destroying buckets and candles with a tank.
Jackie (Poway)
@Izzy J I agree with you because they do look like they are crushing cans. I also believe that, it is after a war because the people that look like soldiers do not have wepons. I noticed that there was a building that look abandoned, did you see it.I also saw other people in the back.I do like your response though it was great.
Kianah wright (poway)
@Izzy J You did a great job writing this guess whats going on in the picture. When you said that the picture is sad because its black and white, does not mean its sad. You used the farce "I know this because" two times. Overall you did a great job.
Kalista (Poway CA)
@Izzy J I think these are great theories, you have put in a lot of evidence to support your claim. It seems like you really took a good look at the picture. Overall I think these are all great theories. Finally I like how you talked about the tank and what it is crushing, my class was also thinking about that.
Summer Schultz (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
I personally think that this photo is really old (as it is in black and white) and I also can assume that it was taken during world war two. In the photo, I see many soldiers lined up by the side of the tank. The soldiers are either seeing the tank for the first time, or they are just examining it. I see that underneath the tank, there are scrap pieces of metal and cans and pipes. I suspect that this is for testing the new invention to use it in war strategies. I can imagine that the men would be very interested in seeing the machine perform for the first time, as it was a huge advancement in technology regarding the war.
Liliana wright (poway ca)
@Summer Schultz I think that this is a really good respons but why do you assume that this was during world war two? My class thought that it was the end of the a war and maybe some solders had passed away because solders are surrounding a tank and some stuff that where probuble some soldres belongings.
Avery Hodges (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@Summer Schultz I also think that it is from a war period. But, I think it's possible that they are crushing down the metal to be able to use it for other things, not just to test out the strength, although I could be wrong.
Adele (Boston)
@Summer Schultz I agree with your observation because you can see the man standing in uniform which suggests that the picture was taken in times of war plus they are looking at the tank with curiosity which suggests that they are probably being taught how to operate it.
Ms. Hiltz's Class (Old Orchard Beach)
Our class thinks that this is an old picture because it is black and white and ripped in the bottom corner. We think that it might be from WWI or WWII. We see that the tank is running over metal cans and pipes. We think that they might be doing this so that they can create scrap metal to use for building things. We see the numbers 56 and 1800 on the tank. We think that the 56 might be how many were made or the year that the tank was made. One of the military men is wearing a different uniform and there are also some men laughing in the corner who we think are townspeople.
Valley elementary student (Valley elementary)
@Ms. Hiltz's Class I think that you're claim is very good. You're findings are very good too. I think that you're reasons are very good to.
Mrs G Reader's Workshop 3 (Seitz Middle School, Riverview, MI)
This is a Renault FT 17 in World War I in France. It is being tested. We think this because of the big pile of junk that the tank is running over and because the people in the background are just watching calmly.
Jonah (Virginia)
I agree with you, however, the soldiers in the back are wearing ww1 American uniforms, so this could be in America or France.
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
This is a modification of the original post by us: We think that the photo for the week of February 3rd 2020 is a World War One French Renault FT 17 which we think was given to the Americans by the French, and the Americans are testing its capabilities, which actually were pretty bad. The Renault was known for breaking down and/or getting stuck easily.
leah (somewhere)
@Evan and Jonah this is smart, I agree
Jordan's class (south carolina)
We think that the picture is from the 1920's during Prohibition. We think that the tank is crushing moonshine pots and stills because alcohol making was illegal. The men in the back are soldiers of some sort....maybe National Guard or reserve members.
Braelyn Tubbs (Poway, CA)
@Jordan's class I think that this is a great response. I like how you added what you know already from that period of time. Your class is also being descriptive about what you are seeing in the photo, which makes the reader believe what you are saying.
Gemma and Mady (ACT)
The image is subjected to multiple viewing points, drawing the viewer’s attention towards subjects within the foreground, middle, and background. The black and white composure alongside camera quality resembles that the image was taken years ago, however, the texture within the objects appears in a metal like a form, perhaps personal belongings of those presumably in the army (assuming by the uniforms, position, and hats). This image is a demonstration of the tank’s power, highlighting its strength or other dangerous attributes.
Mrs G Reader's Workshop 1 (Seitz Middle School, Riverview, MI)
In this photo of a World War I tank (we think), the tank is either: 1. being tested, 2. invading another town, 3. the site where someone died and is being honored, or 4. part of the training of the soldiers in the photo.
valley elemantry scool poway (poway)
@Mrs G Reader's Workshop 1 tell why you think that
connor (poway)
@Mrs G Reader's Workshop 1 I think that it is a great idea and it is very creative but I have one question if they are invading a town then why do the soldier not have guns? Also if you look closely the uniforms look form the 1900s and they had a law back then that you could not use alcahol and the matierals that there crushing look like brewing matirials. it was called the prohibiton era.
Lake Tugg Student (ACT)
In this monochrome image you can see a smaller than average tank crushing an abundance of metal household items as a display of what a smaller tank can do while being observed by the military soldiers.
valley elemantry scool poway (poway)
@Lake Tugg Student i think this is good but you should tell why you think that. how do you know what a average tank looks like?
Bree and Kai (Canberra)
Was set around WWII judging by what the people are wearing in the photograph and the tank. The photo is torn at the bottom and in black and white. The houses in the background also seem quite old as the windows still have wooden shutters on the outside. The tank could have been used to crush the metal materials so that they could be reused. The buckets could have been gathered from the houses in the background. The people in the top hats in the background may have lived in the area. The image could also be showing a demonstration of the tanks mobility on rough terrain.
Kai (SD)
@Bree and Kai i agree with you on that
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
In this picture, I see a group of uniformed men standing around a very old-looking tank watching it run over a bunch of random huge objects, most look like metal or aluminum ones. Maybe they were testing out an old tank to see if it would still work as well, or they just fixed a broken tank and are testing it out again. My first thought was that this might have been the men’s first time using a tank, and so they were testing it out and trying to get familiar with it and see what power it has and would have in battle. The mens’ faces all look very serious except one man more to the right looks as if he is amused by the tank. That leads me to believe my first thought might be true, because seeing a weapon with that much power must’ve been shocking but also kind of cool at the same time for them.
Summer Schultz (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
@Charlotte Saxton I completely agree with your thoughts on this photograph. i love how you included how the soldiers must of felt seeing the tank for the first time! I also noticed the one guy that was amused by the tank, I wonder what was going through his head!
Ashley (Australia)
In this picture we can see an army tank surrounded by what seems to be soldiers (uniforms). The tank looks to be crushing a variety of metal objects (trash cans, metal buckets, etc.). Although the picture is black and white, from the textures of the objects we can easily recognise that the items are made from metal or similar materials. The background of the image seems to have a haze over it as if there is smoke in the air. From the structure of the buildings in the background, it looks as if this image may have been taken in the centre of an old town.
Lake Tugg Student (ACT)
In this monochrome image you can see a smaller than average tank crushing an abundance of various metal household items, while showcasing what a smaller than average tank can do while being observed by the soldiers.
Kacey (MA)
@Lake Tugg Student I agree that this tank was suppose to send soldiers a message that small things can still bring a lot of damage.
Holly and friends (Tuggeranong)
In this photo, it appears that there is an army tank numbered 56, being surrounded by what looks to be soldiers because of the uniform they are wearing. There are also high powered men in the back right corner, we believe they are high powered because of the hats and trench coats they are wearing. The army tank appears to be running over mostly metal appliances. They are located in a town because of the houses behind them.
sybilla n court (ACT)
In the image it looks like some upper class men to the far right of the picture are trying to sell the tank to the soldiers in what seems to be a local village? the way that they are trying to sell this to the military is by crushing various metal items under its weight showing its strength and durability. Some of the solders look unimpressed white others are, mainly the upper class men in top hats obviously getting a kick out of seeing the machine in action.
Sakari (ACT, Australia)
The soldiers look like the New Zealand army from WW1, Due to the hats. Looks like soldiers in a town watching a tank crush or testing, maybe just showing off the newest tank looking at their facial expressions some of them look amazed.
Jonah (Virginia)
this is an WW1 American light tank being tested in front of a bunch of American officers, at the end or after ww1.
Elbeano (LTC)
this photo was taken before colour (1855) they are running over buckets, the tank is flattening the metal in its path. The military is standing by watching. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
The tank didn’t exist in 1855
kyle (canberra)
The new york times What do you think is going on in the photo? I think the setting is WWII and the soldiers are destroying useless junk that they don't need. Or the people in the tank are training for an attack because the junk on the floor might be there to act like rough terrain and the gun is pointed to the right of the tank because it might be trying to shoot something What do you see that makes you say that? The tank is driving over the junk that is left on the ground in a trail and the soldiers are wearing the same military clothes and gear like gun holsters and things like that at their waist
Tuggers (Tuggers)
Monotone photo of 2 lines of men in military uniform watching a tank running over trash. There is a house in the right hand side of the image
Zaebriauna (Lubbock)
In the picture, several men in military uniforms are seen on the right so I think they're soldiers and they have a tank on the left and it appears they are running over buckets and other discarded things testing and seeing what the tank is able to do.
Allie (Lubbock, TX)
This picture has been taken back then when colored pictures weren't a thing. There is a tank running over some trash cans. And there is a bunch of men who are looking at the occurrence. Maybe this has to do with destroying official stuff in the trash can. So maybe they don't us to know what they are destroying.
Kylie (Texas)
Some men, presumably in the Army, are watching this tank-type-vehicle run over different metals to show how strong this instrument is and how dangerous it can be. There is a big group of men standing around a tank that seems to be running over a bunch of tin/metal type cans, etc. They all have uniforms/ matching hats on I can see a house in the back on the right. I think this is set in America because the house in the back has/had an American looking build to it. I think this was some time during WW1 or WW2 because there are no women present in the picture and the clothing looks like it was made in the 20s.
Tuggers (Tuggers)
@Kylie nice description of the image 👍
Elbeano (LTC)
@Kylie agreed baby g
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
It’s from ww1
Kristina (Lubbock)
I see an army of man looking upon a buildozer destroying pots and pans basically anything metal. Maybe trying to get rid of materials to make new things out of it. Number 56 on the tank.
Lily (Lubbock, TX)
I see a tank that looks at least a couple decades old, soldiers in uniforms similar to those worn by rangers and possibly sergeants, and an assortment of metal objects that the tank is rolling over. I suspect this was taken during one of the world wars, probably the second as I believe tanks were not invented until then. They may be trying to destroy the metal things for some reason, perhaps as a demonstration of the tank's power.
Noah Medina Valley Elementary School (Poway CA)
@Lily I think your answer was great! I really liked how you described how the tank by saying how the tank might be a few decades old. Also I agree with you how your saying that they might be crushing metal objects to test the tanks power. I suppose it is in one of the world wars because I think they started using tanks in wars. Keep up the hard work!
Kami (Texas)
I think is maybe a machine that they are testing a machine in the early 1900s. There are many men behind the machine, and the machine is running over pots and pans.
Leah (Texas)
It looks like a military of some sort is destroying metal item and either are crushing the metal with the tank of also destroying it. If the tank is being destroyed either the war is over, or they are getting better or more improved tech. Also the picture is black and white so the war could have taken place during ine of the world wars.
Leah (Lubbock,TX)
This looks like the military is testing a tank (#56) The tank is going over cans and trash to test if it can go over a hill or a field covered with trash
Alex (Lubbock)
There is a number, 56, on the tank. I think that´s a tank. It´s crushing some trash cans, metal trash. There are many men in uniform. They have old fashioned hats. Some sort of military base. Behind the tank there are men in black, that look kind of like Popes.
aniyah (Lubbock, Texas)
it looks like stuff running over stuff
tahaven (Lubboxk, Texas)
It looks like army men watching a tank run over trash or metal. It looks really old.
Bree and Kai (Canberra)
@tahaven yeah I agree
Belladonna (Lubbock)
It looks like a tank crushing containers. Maybe shortly after WWII?
Ainsley (Texas)
It makes me think of WWI or WWII. I don't think that it has to do with Nazi Germany because there is no swashtiga. But the tank actually was created by the Germans so I think that they are testing the tank.
Claudia (Houston)
After looking at the photo, I think this from Germany, with the Nazi Germans testing out their machine.
Mrs. Rivas 5thGradeR (New Jersey)
The picture is in black and white, so we believe it is from a long time ago. Also, the uniforms they are wearing are not uniforms soldiers wear now. They may be army soldiers watching a tank demonstration, recycling the scrap metal to melt down to use for weapons, or crushing enemy supplies. We noticed that there is a number 56 on the tank, so this picture may be from 1956 or earlier like during WWII. Some of us believe this picture takes place in England. We also noticed the house in the back is broken down perhaps due to war.
Dr. Wright's 4/5 students (Valley Elementary, Poway, CA)
Mrs. Wright's group ( Poway CA ) My group has several theories. We think that maybe it was the end of the war. Houses look abandoned. Soldiers no longer have weapons. We think this because there is a big group of military people. We are wondering about the cans. Maybe in each one of those cans they are smashing with a tank there is something that they do to honor the people who might have died in that war. Another theory is that this is related to the Prohibition era and the containers are the bins where they kept the alcohol. Another theory is that the way soldiers are lined up they are receiving some type of training and the men in the top hats are the teachers. They use the containers to simulate rocky terrain. Another idea is that perhaps they inspected the soldier quarters and they found these and want to teach them a lesson by having them destroyed by the tank
Ivvone (Houston, Texas)
In the picture several men in military uniforms are visible on the right so I'm guessing they're soldiers and they have a tank on the left and it appears they are running over buckets and other discarded things.
HPHS (NYC)
We believe that the tank is being tested as new war technology. It was taken in the early 1900s and in WW1 when tanks were new. We think the test is the tank riding over the metal objects as a comparison to the battlefield while the soldiers observe in approval.
Lorenzo (North america)
A tank destroying stills and other moonshining equipment in Newport, Ky. during prohibition era
Arianna (Houston)
I see that there is n old thank that is crushing some buckets, maybe because they can use the metals to create guns r they can reuse it for protection. We can tell that its an old picture because of the color, and also looking at how old its the tank. I see that the soldiers are looking at the tank driving over the buckets, and I think those hats belong to a place in Canada because i remember looking at those kind of hats in the soldiers in Canada.
nyia w. (houston texas)
in this photo that this is an old picture because of its photo filter (black and white) and the geography setting
Sean Kearney (Houston)
I see a tank crushing scrap metal maybe to use it for weapons and other war accessories.
Hannah N. (Lamar High School, Houston, Tx.)
In this photo I could predict that this is an old photo because it is in black and white. This was during a war because there is an old tank with scraps of medal or oil. The men are all in a horizontal line and wearing matching uniforms. In the backround their are churches and houses.
Joseph A (Houston, TX)
In this photo, it looks like the french are showing the Renault FT tank to the American military during world war 1 by showing it's ability's by making it run over a bunch of buckets and show casing it's rotating turret.
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
we think the exact same thing!
Michelle (Houston)
I see a tank driving under buckets it can trash old things in the war that they found or don't want. And it took place during war
Karime (Lubbock, TX)
In the picture, the is a tank running over tins and buckets. In the background, there is a line of soldiers watching. I think this is the first tank, and that is demonstrating the strength of the tank.
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
The first tank was the British Mark 1 which appeared in the battle of the Somme. This is a Renault FT-17.
Mariah (Lubbock, Texas)
In this picture I think they are watching a military vehicle go over things like pails to test it. I think this because they are part of the military and if something is not strong enough to go over small pails it might not be strong enough to go into war. This is important because if its not strong it could cause problems while fighting with canons and guns.
paola (poway)
@Mariah You have a really good comment but would that be a place to be testing and i think the solidres should be a should take 5 steps back.
Ashtyn (Lubbock)
In this picture a tank is seen crushing some objects, people are in the background watching the tank. I believe the tank is preparing to roam a new planet. I assume this because there is no hull on this rover. I just changed my mind, I believe this is a rover preparing its wheels to roam under different conditions. That's why there are objects of all shapes and sizes that the rover is going over.
joy (houston)
it is a picture of a tank rolling over metal cans. because there is visibly a tank. i see all the soldiers standing and looking at the tank.
Cameron (Hollywood, CA)
i think these men might be packing for war because there are buckets and bins and they might be holding something. that thing looks like a tank. and they look like they are suited up for war. :)
You yang Fuzhen (China)
I think this picture is probably during a war because the men in the back look like they are in a military uniform and they are trying to destroy like trash or something because there are piles of garbage maybe and there is a machine crushing all the garbage.
Mya (Lubbock, Texas)
In this photo a small tank is running over a pile tin bins in the 1930's or is a piece of art to protest something. This could also be punishment of some kind and the consequence could be is that you must give up some household item which would then be destroyed and it just happened to be metal. I believe one of these things are going on due to the fact that there seems to be many troop, officers, or military surrounding this site and observing what is either taking place or almost admiring the art. In this photo I can also see that there is not many or any everyday civilians observing what is going on. I can also see that this take doesn't seem to be on or operated because this is a still picture. if this picture really was taken when i estimate for a picture to be still everything has to be still for a second or the photo would come out blurry so i can see some kinds of evidence of this would be a piece of art. Though this could also be test run for the new or other tanks to be sure that it can get over this material that is shown to shown off how the tank works and there are men on the right side of the screen that are dressed really nice for this time period so I can assume this is some kind of auction for the tanks.
Evan and Jonah (Virginia)
There was no war in the 1930’s, this tank is from ww1
Mrs. Moen's 5th Grade Class (Colorado)
Our class thinks this was a photograph taken of military and government officials in Germany in the 1900’s. They were getting ready for WWII by testing their tanks ability. They conducted this through the crushing of oil cans, metal objects, and plastic. Our class also noticed a rip in the lower right hand corner symbolizing a photograph. We noticed 56 on the tank but do not know what it means.
Maddie class wright (poway)
@Mrs. Moen's 5th Grade Class .I think those are very good points and its a amazing details how you explain the details and why you think that. Have you noticed that there is a house in the top right corner could that help you with any thing how its rustic, old and ruined.
Janessa Rae (Lubbock,Texas)
I think this military is trying to destroy some evidence or get trash out of the way. There is a war tank running over giant barrels and metal containers ,and I think this image was taken around WWI because of the uniforms the men are wearing.I also see that this event is around houses and buildings in what seems to be a small town.
Kaitlyn (Texas)
I think that they are reusing the metal in the cans for other purposes maybe bullets. The tank is rolling over the metal to crush down the tins and buckets. I think they are soldiers or they could be a group of people from the town trying to get materials. Since there is houses behind them and the stuff could have been things they brought from their own homes.
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Kaitlyn I hadn't thought about them running over the objects to use as materials, but that would make a lot of sense. People bringing stuff from their houses would make sense as to why they are doing this in front of all the homes too.
<3 (Lubbock Texas)
In the image there is a tank running over several different items like pots and buckets. Behind the tank there is a crowd of soldiers that are taking and watching what is happening. I'm not really sure why or what they're doing but it is during a time of a war, maybe World War 1 or 2, and they are trying to get rid of the trash.
Gianna F (LCMS)
2/4/20 In this picture it is taken place in the past. I know this because it is taken in black and white also the men in the picture have uniforms on. The men in the picture are part of some army. I know this because they are wearing uniforms. The picture has a bunch of old kitchen utensils and barrels. I know this because there are a bunch of metal barrels sitting in the picture. Based on the evidence this picture is really old and from the past.
Zoie (Texas)
In the picture, I see a tank and people standing around this machine they look very intrigued I think this is a new machine that breaks down thus trash and that it looks that are at the base because they are matching like in an army uniform this feels like it is near the coast because of the sand. OR I think this showcasing this new machine how it can go over rough terrain and go to places that regular machines can't.
Ashley (Australia)
@Zoie The army tank seems to be of an older model, therefore may put someone under the impression that they may be using the tank for unruly reasons. But because this photo looks like it is from an earlier era, it could be a new tank made from whatever resources were available to them at that point in time.
Jose (Poway)
In this picture you can observe a tank driving over buckets with soldiers standing on the side. If you look at the right, you can see three men having a conversation. Behind those men is a house. This could be taking place during war.
Jacob P (Poway)
In this image, there is a tank that is running over numerous pots, pans, buckets, etc. It also seems to be in the middle of the war because all the men are dressed in matching uniforms and obviously the tank. They are all standing in semi-formation with almost no expression on their faces. From the tank and the uniforms the men are wearing, I think that this is during WWII and the photo was shot after soldiers have pillaged a town. It looks as if they’ve rummaged through the houses in the town and took people’s belongings. I’m also guessing this is in America because of the way the houses are built in the back. They look like homes from a small town in the early 1900s.
Ryder (Poway high)
The very first thing i noticed about this picture was it was in black and white. So I thought right away it was an older picture taken in the early 1900’s with soldiers or people wearing close to the same outfit who are watching a tank run over some kind of tubs. There are also businessmen looking at something behind the tank, I'm thinking it's another tank.
Carleigh (Abraxas)
I believe that this photo was taken near the time of WW1 because the photo isn’t in color therefore it was a long time ago. Then I believe it was probably around the time of war because the men are in older styled uniforms and there is an older tank so that is probably some of their equipment. They were probably trying to test the tank and see how much damage the tank can really cause by destroying old household items.
Lauren (Poway, CA)
I see a lot of men that seem to be soldiers because of their uniforms, they seem very focused and intrigued. The men are surrounded by a dirt area with no grass and there is a big tank that seems to be rolling over a bunch of garbage or tins. There are two or three men in the background that seem to be businessmen of some sort. In the back there are a lot of houses and I think a few buildings as well. This picture seems to be from a long time ago I am guessing it took place in the USA during a war.
bryant (poway)
In this picture there are men with uniforms and they are standing next to a big tank. The tank is running over metal trash. The photo is also black and white. From what I see I think that the photo takes place in the past. It also looks like they are from the army because theirs a big tank. Overall I think this photo is a camp from world war 1 or 2 and that they are getting rid of junk.
sarah (san diegp)
It looks like this picture was taken a while ago because of the quality of the picture. There are men in uniform around a tank. There is a tank crushing items. It seems like they could be preparing for some type of war since the men are in uniform and that there is a tank. This photo was probably taken sometime around WW2.
Calvin (Abraxas High)
I think that those guys are crushing all that metal and gonna recycle it for themselves. I think they got all the metal from houses as taxes. It looks like they’re in the middle of a town. They look crazy.
Riley (CA)
This image seems to be from around the 1900’s; if I were to guess it would be around 1940-1950. The image depicts a tank surrounded by soldiers and the tank seems to be running over a large line of garbage and scrap. There are also two businessmen in the rear of the photo staring off into the distance and behind the soldiers you can see the outline of houses.
logan (poway ca)
@Riley i think this is a great response because it ads all of the details about the uniforms and the picture and you think its old and i agree they it might be in the 1900s.
Brian (Abraxas)
The tank seems to be running stuff over while soldiers standby watching.
Riley S (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the past. I know this because the picture takes place in the past. I know this because the picture is in black and white. The men in the picture are in the military. I know this because the men look like they are in uniform for the military. The men are watching the tank destroy the metal. I know this because the machine is a tank and it's going over metal and all of the men are watching. In conclusion, the picture takes place in the past where the men are watching a tank destroy metal.
Ms. Pearson's Class (Arlington, VA)
We think that the photo for the week of February 3rd 2020 is a World War One American light tank, sometimes used as a troop transport tank, based on our limited knowledge. From Jonah Spiggle and Evan Yue Gunston MS Arlington Virginia
Barbara Gerber (Santa Fe, NM)
We have three theories: 1) This picture appears to be taken in Europe after or during the late years of WW I. This French tank is crushing some sort of equipment that might have been found in a military camp. 2) This photo was taken in the U.S. during Prohibition and the tank is crushing stills and other equipment for making illegal alcohol. 3) These people are against hygiene and are crushing household items meant to keep clothing and people clean. ;)
WCMS Panthers (North Carolina)
We think that the picture shows us preparing for war. The soldiers have uniforms and there are tanks.
George (Virginia)
Well, that's a M1917 (very distinctive steel wheels and the polygonal turret give it away) crushing what appears to be a distillery. So, we automatically know that this picture was taken circa WW1. That being said, those soldiers are wearing the military uniform of the US Army during that time period as well. The fact that an American piece of military equipment is surrounded by unarmed, un-agitated American joes, combined with the fact that it is crushing pieces of a moonshine still, I'd guess this was taken in the USA. Conclusion: Is this a National Guard Unit enforcing prohibition laws in the USA sometime during prohibition?
Alexia (MA)
@George I think it could be moonshine equipment. I think it could be a foreign country not the United States.
Paris (Lubbock, Texas)
I claim that they are testing tanks before war... This image shows a metal tank running over a bunch of metal buckets and materials. There are a bunch of soldiers standing around watching it happen..... The materials are all different textures and sizes resembling the possible un knowing texture of the battle field.. it's important because they have to prepare for all different textures of different battlefields of war.
Hannah (Lubbock, TX)
In this picture a tank is being tested out, because everyone in the picture is calm and they are staring at the tank which is running over large metal items. Behind the tank in the background, I also noticed some other men wearing fancy hats and clothes. The men also look a little happy.
Madysen (Lubbock, Texas)
1. This picture is showing a tank, and a bunch of trash and metals. 2. A tank and there are military soldiers standing. 3. The tank is doing a test run and is running over metals and this looks more like in the time period of world war II.
이슬비 (서울)
It seems to be World War II. The military uniform is old and the picture looks old. I also think the tank is being tested before the war because the tank is in old material.
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think this photo is from the past. We noticed their outfits and it is in black and white. We think this was taken in a neighborhood where there was war. Some of us think the tank is stuck and some of us think the tank is crushing the enemies supplies.
Maria (Virginia)
@Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade I agree that this photo is from the past. Since, the image itself seems to have a scuff on it. Also, this image was probably taken during a time of war, especially since there are military officials in the photo.
Devin Dudley (Va)
@Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade I think its the after math of some war and things are getting clean up. And the soldiers are getting lined up to take the photo.
Will (McLean, Va)
@Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade, I believe that the tank in the image above is being tested to see how durable it would be in the battlefield. The image was most likely during the first world war based off of the uniforms that the soldiers were wearing. Along with the technology seen on the tank.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
This picture looks like it was taken many years ago. The photo is in black and white and is slightly blurry. The soldiers are wearing clothing of an older time period as well. The soldiers are watching as some sort of tank destroys metal objects. It looks like they are in a village, possibly destroying the property of the villagers. The metal objects look like everyday items. They could be preparing for war. They are testing the tank, and the objects they are destroying are older, rusted items. This looks like it could be around the time of World War I based on the uniforms.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, it appears that soldiers are watching several brass/metal belongings being crushed and then disposed of. This was definitely taken several decades ago (because of the black and white image and the style of uniforms) and was probably during a war, hence the uniforms. The machine that is crushing the items also looks outdated, which leads me to believe that this was taken a while ago. Another possibility of what's going on could be that they are testing the strength of the machine and seeing what it can break so they can determine how it can be used in the war.
Teresa and Taylor (Aus)
This is a photo of a tank in either WWI or WWII. This could either be a test to see how capable the tank is of travelling across rough terrain which is simulated by the metal cans or it could be a demonstration to show off the tanks capabilities. The metal cans can simulate rough terrain.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Teresa and Taylor They look like they are in a village. Could the items belong to the villagers? Do you think they stole the objects from the villagers or were the items donated for the war effort? I agree that they are preparing for war and testing the abilities of the tank. The metal could also simulate how strongly the tank can crush or destroy items.
Ethan T (LCMS)
This photo takes place in the past. I can deduct this due to the picture being in black and white. There is also a Renault ft-17 tank which has an outdated model to that of current days. This shows that this picture was more specifically around World War I, considering that the tanks were being used by the French around this point in time. With that knowledge, I can also infer that the people in the back are French soldiers. These soldiers appear to be testing the tank’s capabilities when it comes to the transversal aspect. I can conclude this because the tank appears to be driving over a variety of metal buckets or bins. In conclusion, this picture captures French soldiers testing out a Renault ft-17 tank’s capabilities around the time of World War I.
Hayley (LTC)
The soldiers are onlooking the tank that is crushing the metal and look unfazed as they gaze at the tanks demonstration of its capabilities. Pointing out the obvious the picture was taken during the a war in a town that was surely effected by it. their unfazed expressions suggest that it is not their metal that is being crushed.
Brighid S (LCMS)
In this picture there’s a group of men appearing to be soldiers gathered around a tank. This could mean they are getting a demonstration of how it works because the tank is on top of a bunch of metal crushing it. Also, in the picture this picture was taken a while ago. I know this because of the style of the clothes the men are wearing which is not like military wear today, and the quality/color of the photo grainy and black and white. Lastly, the men are in the military. I can tell this because of their outfits. Their outfits are formal with a big hat and they have a belt on that carries weapons. All in all, this picture is an old picture of men in the military testing how strong their tank is.
Ms. S's 1st Period (SC)
1) 1: There are soldiers in the background, the tank is crushing stuff. 2: We think the tank ran over trash cans and the people in the back are training/getting ready for a war. 3: The military might be destroying metal containers used to make alcohol. 4: The tank is destroying civilian property. 2) 4: They are getting ready for war because there is a tank and soldiers in the background. 3: They were destroying containers to make alcohol because alcohol used to be illegal during the Prohibition. 3) We see soliders, tanks, sad faces, and crushing.
Allie M. (LCMS)
The people in the background are soldiers. I know this because the uniforms they are wearing are that of soldiers in an earlier war like World War 1 and 2. The items being crushed are all metals. I know this because the different types of things are metal such as: bathing bins, buckets, small tools, ect. In addition, the thing crushing the metals is a tank which is heavy enough to crush metal but also most likely the only thing they had on hand to crush said metals. This takes place after a main war. I know this because the houses in the background are from a very early period of the 1900s. In addition, the tanks have a very early 1900s look to them. Based on this evidence, these are soldiers for an early war watching a tank crush a lot of metal.
Jamikki (Australia)
I predict that the tank in the image could either be crushing unnecessary items or is just testing the strength of the tank. All of the items in the image are all tins, I have noticed one of them have a flammable sign on it. Perhaps those tins are all empty and not needed again, therefore they could be destroying it. There are also soldiers in the background watching the act in process. If it was testing the machine, I believe it would make more sense as to why the soldiers are watching it crush the items. This photo seems to be an old photo considering the grainy effect and tear at the bottom right of the image.
Courtney F (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the past. I know this because the photo was taken in black and white. Also the metal objects in the picture also look old making me know that the picture was taken in the past. The photo was also taken during war times. I know this because there is a tank in the middle of the picture driving over metal objects. Tanks were used in wars that is why i know this picture was taken during war times. Also there are a bunch of soldiers in the background of the photo. The soldiers in the photo are testing out the tank before they use it. I know this because there are soldiers intensely looking at the tank. They are looking at the tank as if they are studying it to see if it is good or not. Also the tank is going over metal objects possible testing out the tanks strength. In conclusion, the picture was taken in the past during war times while soldiers were testing out a new tank.
Grace & Hayley (LTC)
Clearly this image is taken over 100 years ago. It shows a tank driving over a bunch of metal buckets and random metal objects to test the durability of the tank. Behind the tank is a group of soldiers watching the tank driver over the buckets. The image clearly shows what has been described. The image was taken over 100 years ago because of the tear in the picture and the black and white. More that can be found in the picture would be the location in the background which is Paris. This assumption is made due to the appearance of the soldiers uniform making them french soldier.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Grace & Hayley The image may not necessarily be 100 years ago. It could have been even been 60 years ago. The quality of the photo definitely suggests that it was taken a long time ago. I agree that these are soldiers preparing for war. The men not only are dressed in uniforms, but the tank itself suggests some sort of war effort. Where do you think the metal objects came from? I think the objects could possibly have been donated by the villagers. I agree that they are testing the durability of the tank.
Mrs. K 072 (Athens, Greece)
We believe that the picture was taken during World War I because of the uniforms and the fact that the soldiers are not wearing helmets. It could have been taken somewhere in Europe, perhaps in France or the UK. The tank could be plowing over these metal objects in celebration of the end of the war.
Ricardo M (LCMS)
The people in this picture are all in a group of some sort. Evidence of this shown through their clothing which seems to be similar coats and hats. The next piece of evidence I noticed is that this picture takes place sometime in the past. Evidence of this is shown through the color of the picture which is black and white. The final piece of evidence that I noticed is that this is an event where the crushing of metal appears to be the main focus. I know this because I whole line of metal objects has been placed. This line of metal objects is then being crushed by the vehicle. IN conclusion, this picture takes place in the past where a group of people from the same “organization” have gathered to see an event where the crushing of metal is that main focus
Deelai (Australia)
With in the picture a tank can be seen running over objects that can be found in house holds, some of these items being pipes, buckets, springs and funnels. There also are soldiers ( due to how they are dressed and that all the other males in the photo are dressed the same, besides the two man located to the right of the photo behind the tank) around the tank with unfazed looks. The tank it self seems to have been used quite a far bit due to the rust accumulating on the tank. With this what I believe is happening within the photo is that this military group may have took these items from the house of this vilage. reason being most likly that this group have just took over and trying to strike fear. and what better way then to destroy property of others.
Jade (LTC)
crushing mental for military resources.
Brooke (Australia)
The men in the photograph are watching a tank run over buckets and bins as a type of memorial to represent something that may have happened. Possibly representing something that happened in a war as the men you see are army men, their hats and clothing show this.
Delia (LTC)
The military is flattening metal, for recycling to use during the war. From the looks, we have assumed that it was the second world war, and due to their simple uniforms. It is a small town, where the military is taking metal to remake into bullets or tanks, etc.
Barbara (France)
We can see soldiers (uniform) watching a tank destroying metal objects. It's probably during a war (WWII ?) The soldiers are not French because of the uniforms. Maybe Canadian soldiers?
Hayden (LTC)
This photo seems to show what looks like a miliatary tank, attempting to run over metals and plastics like buckets and bins. This is shown by the tank being on a sland and being off the ground. The outfits of the men to the right of the tank back the suggestion of miliatary. I feel that because the front of the wheels are off the ground the tank could be stufck in place and it seems as tho it has been taken differently as there are 2 casual people on the right side of the image who seem to b having a humurous conversation, the man in the middle of the soldiers looking like he might laugh and the rest of the soldiers being poker faced. The houses with wyat seems to be dirt or mould on the walls and the uniforms and clothing suggest this could be early to mid 1900s
Annalise Laverie (Australia)
The photo appears to be based in world war 1, where the soldiers are watching a demonstration of the destruction of watering cans(rubbish) I believe this is a demonstration of power for the soldiers & a demonstration of what the tank can accomplish.
Brayden P. (LCMS)
This is a copy or a hard scan of a photo. I know this because you can see fold marks and a rip on the image. This photo was taken a long time ago. I know this because it is in black and white and the men in the photo are wearing outdated clothing. The black and white and the rips and crumples of the photo show that this took place a long time ago. The men in the photo are soldiers. The soldiers are wearing old military clothing/uniforms and they are watching as a tank runs over cans, tubes, and containers of some sort, presumably to destroy it. In conclusion, this picture is a copy of an original image, taken a long time ago, of army men watching as a tank destroys cans and supplies.
Ava C (LCMS)
The people shown in this image are the Nazis. I know this because they are all men wearing matching hats and button-down shirts. The matching hats are part of the Nazi uniform. Going along with this idea, this photo was taken during the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945. I know this because the image is in black and white. This is also supported because the Nazis were attacking the jews during this time period. Because the Nazis are capturing Jews, they are destroying their belongings. I know this because there is a tractor being driven over several items that could have been useful to people during this time period, such as buckets. This was definitely a common household item in the early 1900s, as water wells were the main source of water for people. In conclusion, this picture features a group of Nazis during the Holocaust destroying the belongings of jews that they’ve captured.
Alex (Australia)
Looks like the army trying to show power over the town folks. Army soldiers taking possessions of low value from the residents of that town and crushing it under a tank. The military men don’t seem to be fazed by this which proves these possessions don’t belong to them
Jade (LTC)
Crushing metal scrapes for military resources. The photo could be taken back in the early 1900's due to the look of the tank as it looks old and rusty. Military personal standing around the scene, mostly for protecting the tank. - Hayley and Chantel
Cc (Aus)
This image is clearly from a war because there are soldiers and a tank is the photo. I believe the photograph is capturing the moment a group of soldiers is being shown a demonstration of a tank, where they are shown driving over a bunch of household found metal, in a small town. These items may have been forcibly taken from the homes in order to complete this demonstration.
Riaan (.)
I think that the town is running out of water and that it's is time to use less water and by prove a point the military brought a tank and run over water buckets.
Jason (LTC)
1.everyone is looking at the tank, there is a war happening and it look, like the tank is broken 2.the photo is black and white and the uniform that the soldiers is wearing looks like there going to a war 3. Series face from different soldiers.the tank is running into water metal buckets
Jordan Phillips (Australia)
It is clearly a drum set
Sanjeev P. (LCMS)
This image was taken in the latter months of World War I. I can prove this because there is a Renault FT-17 tank in the foreground. I noticed that the onlooking soldiers are part of ANZAC based on their uniform design and their slouch hats. This image was taken somewhere outside of Paris. I know this because half of FT-17s were made outside of Paris. The architecture style of the building also confirms this. In conclusion, the ANZAC soldiers in this image are standing outside of Paris and they are receiving a demonstration of the Renault FT-17 turret tank and its capabilities before being shipped out to the front lines.
Delia (LTC)
@Sanjeev P. Impressive knowledge about the world wars, including the production and distribution of tanks. You can really tell you have put time into your reasoning.
George (Virginia)
@Sanjeev P. That's not a Renault FT-17. That's a M1917. Notice the polygonal shaped turret and the steel wheels.
Chris G. COS (COS)
I believe that French soldiers are testing a tank in this picture. I think that they are testing a tank because the tank in this picture is a Renault FT. The Renault FT was mainly used during World War 1 and World War 2 and is not used today in battles. French people made the Renault FT so that is why I think that the soldiers are French. This picture could have been taken during World War 2 because the picture looks old, if you look in the bottom right corner you will see a rip in the picture, and the Renault FT tank was mainly used during World War 2. The tank looks like it's crushing metal buckets and a lot of soldiers are watching to see if the tank can withstand tough terrain. If you look at the houses in the back you can see that they seem to be testing the tank in some village, maybe their base camp or somewhere. I believe that these soldiers are getting ready for world war 2.
Hayden (LTC)
@Chris G. COS knowing the tank is a good part of this because it makes it a lot easier to think of what possible scenario this could be. It makes it a lot more believeable and it is a really good detail to catch on to
Kaitlin B (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the past. I know this because it is in black and white. In addition, the uniforms, pots/buckets, and the giant machine look outdated and less modern than what today’s versions look like. The men in the picture are in the army. I can infer this because they are all in the same uniform. In addition, army men and women are used to being around big machinery, in this case, a tank. Lastly, the soldiers in the picture are testing the tank. I can infer this because they are watching intently on how the tank is moving across the objects, which are acting as a simulation as if the tank was actually in use. Based on this evidence, This picture is of men who are watching intently as they test out a tank, and the picture is also from the past.
Cc (Aus)
@Kaitlin B great observation skills, connecting all factors of where and when this picture taken, keep up the awesome work :)
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Kaitlin B I agree that they could be testing the strength of the tank and that this picture is from the past. Also, it is interesting that the men are silently staring as this happens.
Brooke (Australia)
@Kaitlin B ya crushin it with that answer #goodjob
Jenna M (LCMS)
In this photo, what looks like a war tank. I know this because it looks like there is a look thing on top of the vehicle. Also there’s a bunch of men standing in the background that look like they’re part of some type of military action. I know this because they are all in some type of uniform and have old fashioned military hats on. Also in the photo the vehicle is going over what is most likely trash since the people are just standing around it. Lastly this photo was taken a couple decades ago since i can see a lot of factories in the background. Therefore since today things aren't made in factories near us (in our neighborhoods), also the photo is taken in black and white which leads me to believe this photo was taken a long time ago. In conclusion all this evidence shows that this was taken a long time ago.
Annalise Laverie (Australia)
@Jenna M I agree. I believe the photo represents the power within the army and the destruction the war has caused.
Ricky C (LCMS)
This picture was taken in the last 100 years most likely during WWI. I know this because there is a tank that is based on the Renault Ft design. Adding on to that, the earliest model of the Renault Ft (the tank in the picture) was designed in 1918. Next, the people in the back are most likely testing the capabilities of the tank. I know this because of the metal cans, which can be used to simulate rough terrain in the war. Also, the tank isn’t shooting at the people so we can assume that this is them doing a test run with the tank. Lastly, the people witnessing this are apart of some type of unit in the military. I know this because they are all wearing similar clothing to each other. Only a handful of jobs require people to wear similar clothing but only the military would have a tank that they could use. Based on all this evidence, this picture was taken in the last 100 years, with people in a military unit witnessing the capabilities of the Renault Ft.
Kayla V. (LCMS)
In this picture, a military group is testing out their tanks. I know this because it shows a group of men standing in the background all dressed in military outfits and gear. Next, I know this picture takes place a long time ago. I know this because the picture is in black and white. Also, the men all seem to be wearing old-fashioned military outfits. Lastly, I know that they are testing their military tank’s strength. I know this because the tank is running over a bunch of metal buckets and tins. From this, it can be concluded that this picture takes place in the past and shows a military group testing their tanks.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Kayla V. Do you think they are testing their tank or using it to flatten the pots?
KaileeC (LCMS)
This picture isn't a digital photo. I know this because, in the bottom right-hand corner, there is a tear, plus, there are scattered black dots all around it. The scenery of this photo is in a boot camp or army camp. I know this because one, there is a tank, and two there's rows of soldiers. I think this was set between the 1930s to 1960s because that is when they were made. The actions being done in this photo is an act of prohibition against alcohol. I know this because those kinds of acts were done in the same time period black and white photos were only used, and the tank is rolling over tins, pipes, tools, and machinery used to make alcohol. In conclusion, this photo is set sometime in the 1930s about alcohol prohibition.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
This looks like a photo of a group of men, maybe soldiers, watching as a tank destroys lots of different utilities and objects. These could belong to a group of people whose homes have been raided by the soldiers. The men in the picture all have sad looks on their faces so they don't look happy about what they are doing either; maybe they are being forced against their own will. I wonder why things like big metal basins are being destroyed and not something of more value, like a family heirloom. Maybe the metal will be turned into a use for firearms or other resources, since this photo seems to take place in a war setting. It also seems to be a fairly old photo, since it is in black and white and the men seem to be wearing outdated uniforms.
Eman A. Feroz (Virginia)
@Sophia AOSE I agree with you. I like the detail you went to. Also perhaps the metal basins are holding some type of illegal substance?
Keyri P (LCMS)
The men in the picture are troops. I know this because they are all wearing the same clothes as each other. The troops are trying to minimize waste. I know this because the big machine in the middle is crushing all the trash that’s on the floor. Troops are trying to minimize the fog or pollution in how air. I know this becuase in the top half of the picture you can see that the houses seem blurry when they are far away. In conclusion, the troops are trying to minimize the trash while still caring for the earth.
Lillie P (LCMS)
The men in the photo are soldiers. I know this because all the men are wearing the same style of outfit, which means they are all wearing this uniform. Also, the men’s uniforms are bulky and fit for fighting and protection, which is the typical job of a soldier. The reason there are soldiers is because this photo was taken during the times of war. The vehicle in the photo is a tank, which is used in war as a way to fight. On another note, the photo was taken during in the past because the photo is black and white. Since it took place in the past it would make sense that a war was going on. The tank is stuck. It is stuck because it is on top of a bunch of buckets and bins. It is also stuck because there is no one in it to guide it out. Also, all the soldiers are lined up because they are blocked from moving because of the tank. Based on evidence the photo was taken during a time of war with soldiers that are being blocked from moving due to the tank that is stuck.
Tanzeela R (LCMS)
In this image there is a group of men that are in the army. I know this because they are all wearing the same uniforms. In the picture there is a machine that is crushing the metal items. I know because the men are lined up watching the machine as it destroys the items laying on the ground. This picture was taken a while ago. I know it was taken a long time ago because the picture is black and white. The image had been taken with a black and white only camera. That is why I think men in the army are standing, watching metal items being crushed in this black and white image.
Gabrielle C (LCMS)
In this picture a big machine is crushing many items that must have value to the people around it. I know this because the people are all watching the machine with sad expressions on their faces. Also, the people are a part of an army or they are some type of first responders. I know this because they are all wearing very similar outfits/uniforms. Additionally, this picture is not from this era. The picture looks like it was taken on an old camera that prints only in black and white and the uniforms, machine and the houses on the right side, look like they were made many years ago. In conclusion, this picture was taken a long time ago and it is of many important objects being crushed while a group of people in uniforms watch.
Lindsay J (LCMS)
This picture was taken place in the past. I know this because the picture is in black and white. The men in the picture are in the military. I know this because the men have a uniform and they are all lined up as someone is going to give them an order. There is a mansion and it looks like it is going over the men's belongings. I know this because the mansion is about to go over the men's belongings. Based On the evidence I know that the picture takes place in the past and there are men in the military looking at this mansion that is about to crush their belongings.
Kevin (New Jersey)
I believe that this is a display of the Renault Ft 17 or a M1917 for the American Army. The tank design is immediately indicative of a Renault design, as it has a turret and a 360 degree view cupola. The fact that it is driving over a specific pile of scrap likely indicates that it is being tested on uneven terrain, although I'm not sure how often a tank would have to traverse over metal canisters. The men in the back are likely American, as they are wearing ranger caps and wear uniforms resembling those of American soldiers. It must be during World War I, as the Renault/M1917 was outclassed by tanks like the American M3 Stuart and the M2 Light Tank by 1941, when the United States formally entered World War II.
Mr. Patterson's English II 8th (DHS)
One student thinks it is a WWI tank demonstration because of the outfits of the troops. Another thinks it's supposed to demonstrate how tanks run over things to show the effectiveness of the tanks. Another thinks they are building a barrier out of metal because they are getting ready for an invasion of some sort.
Mrs. Rivas 5thGradeC (New Jersey)
This picture looks old because it is in black and white and the uniforms of the soldiers look old. We have a few ideas of what is going on here. The soldiers are running over the metal cans with the tank. They may be testing out their tank. The soldiers could possibly be training for a special mission, battle, or war such as WWI or WWII. They could also be trying to recycle the cans. Another possibility is that they could be destroying the enemy's supplies.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Mrs. Rivas 5thGradeC I agree with you that there are soldiers running over large metal cans with a tank. Since they are soldiers, they are most likely in a war. The metal cans could be getting recycled into resources for the war, such as firearms, grenades, etc..
Gary (Nagoya, Japan)
@Sophia AOSE I think it's the tank that is running over stuff.
Ryan (SMS)
This picture looks like world war times because of the looks of the equipment used, the uniforms and weaponry. It looks like a bunch of soldiers in a camp getting rid of old things that they don't need like water buckets and old containers.A tank is running over the rubbish so it might be their way of removing trash.Running it over with a tank, then picking up the flattened metal. Now they can have more room to put stuff.
sebastian (sms)
I think there trying to get rid of all the old used equipment you can tell by they are crushing it with a tank.
Jonathan (sms)
I think what is going on in this picture is that a tank is crushing steel pipes and steel buckets. It doesn't look like anyone is driving the tank, although the soldiers look serious.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
I believe that this is a photo of soldiers watching a tank crush the belongings of civilians in a raid. The phot is older and in black and white and judging by the outfits the soldiers are wearing and the tank, this is probably an image from around WW2. The soldiers came in and raided the area during the war. as punishment to the people, they are using the tank to crush their goods and utilities. However, the things they are crushing are trash cans and sinks, things that don't hold the same value as important family heirlooms such as jewelry and photos.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Colleen AOSE I agree with you. If the soldiers were trying to harm the belongings they definitely would've destroyed something with more sentimental value, as opposed to the large metal objects in the photos. Maybe they are breaking down the metal so that it can be recycled into war resources.
Nicole (sms)
This picture looks like it could be set in WWII because it is in black and white. I also think that it is set in WWII because it looks like there is a war. My question is, where is this all happening in?
Patricia (SMS)
I think that they are smashing the metal to test the tank and how strong it is because there is a tank running over pots and pans.
Hunter (SMS)
In this picture it looks like soldiers are testing a tank. I think they are testing a tank because I see many soldiers standing around it, and looking at what it's doing. I also see that this time setting is from a long time ago because of the clothing, and the black and white setting.
Tyler (sms)
i think the tank is being tested to see if it can drive over different areas of land. i think this because the tank is crushing trash. if it can get through that then it can get through stuff like trenches.
lesli (sms)
I think this picture takes place during War World ll.The reason why is because it is in black and white.Another reason because there is a tank and the belongs to the army. The men in the back look like they are wearing uniforms. It looks like the men are destroying the metal cans.
Rylee (sms)
What I see is a tank crushing cans and other items and a bunch of people who look like soldiers or rangers. The cans have cables and other things hanging out the top of them. They are oddly shaped to look like missile canisters or big bombs or other cans. I believe that these people are doing this for a safety reason or testing the tank.
Evan (sms)
looks like a way that they destroy old scrap metal by smashing it
Jaylen (sk)
They could be testing and seeing how strong this mini tank is. They are putting it through test to see. then it will be harder eventually.
Kevin T. (LCMS)
This picture takes place during World War II. You can tell this because the picture is in black and white so that shows that it is an old picture. However, there is a tank in the picture which shows that this picture was taken within the last 60 years. This tank obviously belongs to the army. You can tell this because the men in the background have military uniforms on. The men are trying to destroy the metal cans. This is obvious because they are running them over with a tank. This picture took place during WWII and the military is trying to destroy the metal cans with a tank.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, I think that soldiers during WWI are examining the capabilities of a tank. I think this because all the men formed a circle around the tank and metal. This picture was probably taken during the early years of the war because of the outfits that the men are wearing which are similar to the outfits worn during that time. Also, the tank looks like a much earlier piece of technology, compared to the tanks in WWII. This type of technology during that time was advanced and powerful, and a big change in how that war was fought. This picture can emphasize the change, and how machinery is now used.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
this black and white picture, showing that it's probably older, maybe from the 1800s or 1900s, shows soldiers, primarily in uniforms, watching a tank crush a bunch of metal bins and cans. These could be belongings of people in a country under siege and the soldiers took their belongings, but everything being crushed is metal. They could also be testing the tank to see if it works well, because often times tanks are used to get past obstacles, like metal gates, or to see if it can withstand the obstacles.
Sam M (LCMS)
Based on the evidence given, the people in this picture are witnessing a new tank being tested. I say this because there are soldiers in uniform looking at a tank crossing over buckets. They seem to be excited and amazed at the tank. The buckets could be there to simulate rough terrain and could be demonstrating the tanks abilities through war. It also seems that since the people are not being attacked that it is their tank and they are being instructed about how to pilot and use it and also how it works. They could also be explaining the new features as well as improvements on old ones. This is how based on this evidence I can conclude that the people in the picture are witnessing a new tank being tested and a demonstration about it.
Deelai (Australia)
@Sam M interesting deduction. This would also explain why the two man that look more like townsfolk over to the right side of the photo behind the tank don't seem to take much interest by the tank, but I do question why u use the words amazed and excited to discribe the soldiers watching this test due to their faces looking very unfazed. excapt for the one bloke with his hands on his waist, but reguardless I can agree that this maybe likely.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
This picture is in black and white so it was taken before the 1960's. In the picture there is a tank crushing various metal objects in a pile. I think this picture was probably taken during a war. Probably World War I or II because of the time period and the tank. They were probably crushing metal objects because during World World II or I, governments confiscated metal to melt to make more ammunition and weapons for the war. There look to be houses in the background, so this is somewhere where civilians live. The soldiers standing in a line are probably part of some unit of the army that was assigned to collect all metal objects that were to be melted.
Bryce d (LCMS)
This photo was not taken recently. I know this because the photo is in black and white. I also know that it is at some sort of military base or a place that houses soldiers. I know this because there is a tank and soldiers. The soldiers are recycling or getting rid of the trash. I know this because they have a pile of trash on the ground. In addition, they are running over the trash with the tank. In conclusion, there is a photo from the past taken at a military base of soldiers getting rid of trash.
Yifeng (GRA)
Soldiers are destroying the supplies with a tank. So maybe this is a scene after the war, and a city was taken over by the enemy. So the enemy troop is destroying supplies.
Colin CarGuy (GRA)
A tank is being tested over some garbage to test it. all the onlookers are watching it and observing it. I observe that the tank is very early model and the obstacles look not to be difficult
Nestor F. (J. R. Masterman School)
I think in this picture, people are testing one of the world's first tanks. I think in this picture they are testing if it can drive over rugged terrain, and that is why they are driving over assorted metal pieces. I know that this is probably the first tank because the picture is black and white, which signals it’s old and the tank build looks kind of old. What I mean by that is it seems more like a prototype because it seems not very developed and why would they test it if it was the perfect model? The people around it kind of look like soldiers because their clothing seems reminiscent of a soldier's clothing. Maybe they would test drive it to get the feel of it.
Mr. Patterson's English II 7th (DHS)
Here are various students' inferences: One student thinks that it is during WWI because the tank isn't as advanced as WWII tanks. Another student says that this is not an act of combat, but they are testing the tank. He says this because they are crushing metal, trying to show its durability. This class is SUPER smart!
kebab gra (Austinburg)
It looks like they are crushing metallic items with the tank as some kind of worker strike. What makes me say that is that there are no metal objects behind the tank but they are all in front of it. More things I can find is that the people are waiting in anticipation for the action to start.
Sarai Smith (Hxt)
Who-The soldiers What- The soldiers are crushing down metal. When- 19s in black ans white. I think it location in some what in the mid East or so. Where- It looks like it's in the middle of nowhere almost but still houses around them. Why- Because they are testing out what metals is being crushed or being used probably for the WAR. How- Because they look like they are going to war because they have the tank, and the metal crushed can used for something.
Tyler T (LCMS)
This photo seems to be taken during or after a war. I know this because of the giant tank in the middle of the frame. In addition, the people seem to be wearing the same thing, possibly being a war uniform. This photo seems to be taken in the past. I know this because the tank seems to be a very old technology. In addition, the photo is black and white. The people in this photo seem to have captured a village in war. I know this because there are soldiers standing in a village with an army tank. Based on this evidence, this photo was taken in the past, after a small army captured a village in a war.
Teisha Mathew (Houston)
I think this is the British Army. An Army truck is crushing the metal things that were important to the people. In village settlement in the British Province. May be because they did not fulfill the things the British Army wanted then to do so it is a punishment. The British Army brings a huge Military truck and runs the truck on the metal goods to destroy them. May be because of this many people were destroyed..
Pinto (GRA)
In this picture there is a tank driving over trash cans and other miscellaneous things while soldiers watch. I see the tank and the soldiers and that is what makes me say that. I think that metaphorically it is the destruction of bad memories after a war and the symbolism that their military might destroyed that.
Brandon (Texas)
I think that this picture is during some type of war, judging by the picture quality and the clothing it takes place between 20s-50s.
Zhaire Easley (J.R Masterman School, PA)
In this picture, I see a numerous amount of soldiers gathered together watching a tank flatten and destroy materials, such as watering cans. I concluded this from looking at how the soldiers were in a line watching the tank as it was on top of many materials that were in a row. The picture was captured with black and white lighting, which makes me believe this picture was taken a long time ago. Based on the soldiers, the tank, and the destroyed materials, I think this was during some type of World War or any old war.
Bree Thomas (Julia R. Masterman, PA)
It looks like they´re crushing oil cans in this picture. I say that because the strange tins look like they hold car oil or motor oil because of the spout-like piece at the end. That looks as if it could fit into the gas tank piece of a car. Also, the people in the picture look like some kind of workers. Maybe they´ve been managing the oil or taking it up. They do look a bit rugged.
Marissa (texas)
In the picture there are soldiers in lines watching a tank run over these materials or metal buckets . The picture is old and doesn't have color. The soldiers have old uniforms. This means the picture could've been taken years ago. They could be doing this for political reasons or a way of symbolizing something. Or maybe they are contaminated and there trying to get rid of the materials.
Jeffrion Lange Jr. (Houston Tx)
i feel like this is WWI and the soldiers are testing out the tank to see if can run over metal objects due to the material l of things that where used back then in 1914 - 1918 .
jordan reed (MLHS)
I think that this is from WWI because the tank's arms are shorter than WWII tanks.I think they are crushing the buckets to test the durability of the tank.
Bryce (GRA)
I believe that the people are obviously in an Army of some type and they are most likely watching on eof the first tanks being tested or showcased. The age of the photo makes me beileive that one of the first tanks are being tested in this photo. As well as the amazement on the soldiers faces.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Bryce I agree with you. I think that this photo was meant to showcase the first tanks, and the amazement from the people about the new technology.

Thank you for an abundant discussion today! Continue looking to see what more you can find, share what you see in the image that makes you say that. Is this image from WW1 or WW2? Why is the tank driving over the pile of stuff? And where in the world was this happening? Revisit the blog on Thursday when the image caption and article link are revealed.
Aidan Webster (CMS)
It looks like they are testing the first tank ever made
Mia Moss (J.R Masterman)
I think a couple things could be happening. First I was thinking that the soldiers in the background had raided an enemies house or civilians who had broken some rules. And are now crushing their belongings as punishment. Or the tank is symbolizing the government, and they are displaying their control to trigger a sense of fear by crushing things that belonged to the people of this town. I was also thinking that the tank wasn't actually moving and the soldiers had built a “statue” to respect their fallen comrades. The tank might belong to the enemy force and is upon all the objects to show a defeat and those who have died. Maybe this sculpture was made because there were too many bodies to bury.
Semra S. (Julia R. Masterman School)
I think its soldiers form a war watching a tank crushing some trash. I say that they are soldiers because there are what appears to be some kind of uniform, and they all have similar hats. I imagine that they were in a war and that they are on some kind of break, so they are just having some fun together, maybe to see which tank does the most damage to the trash when they run over it.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Semra S. Hi! It's interesting that you think they could be having a much-needed break during the war. Do you think there is possibly any other explanation for why the tanks are crushing the trash?
Alan in Utah (Utah)
student 1 In this picture it looks like there crushing metal with the tank. I say this because you can see it in the picture and they are standing there watching it. Another thing I noticed is that it doesn't really look like a tank that we have now. I feel like they could be testing out the tank to see if it works so they can use it for battle. Student 2 I think what is going on is that this was around world war one because of the men's uniforms. I think this might be a newer tank that they are testing out, seeing if it can go over things, back in World War 1. Tanks had to go in trenches and think that's what type of test there doing, or maybe that's just a bunch of garbage. On the right side the men are looking at different direction so I think there might be another tank also, the metal and plastic bins are all tied together. Student 3 I think that they made a tank for the first time. They look like they are seeing how well the tank can handle a climb, while also being amused by crushing things. They could just be a bunch of solders goofing off.
Ms.Grocott's 6th Grade (Langley, B.C, Canada)
We think that this is from WWI because the tank's arms are shorter than WWII tanks. We think they are crushing the buckets to test the durability of the tank. We noticed the details of the buildings in the background and it looks like Europe. We also noticed the middle of the tank in the little window reminds us of R2D2.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
There are a bunch of soldiers standing in a line. It looks like they're watching the tank crush the watering cans and other materials. This looks like a very long time ago due to the quality of the photo, and it is also in black and white. The tank crushing the watering cans could have some sort of symbolism behind it, maybe they're crushing it for a cause. The town seems to be rural which could mean there's something deeper behind this.
Mark (sms)
I think that a group of people are getting a tank and driving over metal cans and I think that there doing it to test the tank to see i it can go over it. I think that because a group of people and a tank driving over metal cans
Abby (SMS)
I believe this image was taken during WWI, because of the way the men are dressed and the way the houses look. I think they might be testing the tank to see if it can go over Rocky things like metal. The guys might be soldiers waiting to see if the experiment works.
Emma (SMS)
I think that it takes place around WWI or WWII because the photo is in black and white and there is a tank in the photo as well. But I think that the military could be test one of two things they could be testing new tracks for the wheels which could help explain all of the metal objects or they could be testing a whole new tank and showing the soldiers how well the new equipment works more efficient than the old equipment.
Christopher (SMS)
It looks like this picture is in WWl because the tanks don't look like the tanks they used in WWll. Another reason is that there uniforms look more different. With that I think they are are probably testing how heavy and strong the tank is. The reason I think this is because they are trying to squish the pots and the pots may be there test subjects.
Ella aose (New Jersey)
I think what is happening is that the tank is crushing materials that were either willingly given to them or taken for war purposes (eg. the creation of tanks, weapons, ammunition, etc.). This is because the picture seems to have taken place in the past, possibly during WWI. At this time, materials like metal and aluminum were needed and asked of from citizens to help the war effort. This picture also takes place in quite a rural town and the uniforms that the soldiers are wearing aren't what American soldiers would wear back then. So, this probably isn't taking place in America. Finally, I think that the picture was taken for metaphorical purposes, as the army would have just taken the metal to a factory and melted it down into a malleable liquid.
Douglas (SmS)
I see a bunch of soldiers that look like U.S. soldiers. I also see a tank that looks like they are running over stuff, to either test the tank because it is new or, they could have raided the village( I see houses in the background) and took all their milk or water containers and crushed them so they didn't have anything to store milk and or water in.
travis (sms)
The picture looks like they just invented a tank and all of the are interested in it. They are running the tank through some tests to see if it works perfectly.
Carter (Fort Defiance)
They are running over a moonshine steel because its illegal.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Carter Hi! Your conclusion of the material being moonshine steel is very interesting, I hadn't thought of that. However, what about the materials under the tanks front left track that look to be plastic bins, why do you think they are crushing those.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Carter why do you think this would be done with so many men, most likely soldiers, surrounding it?
Mrs. Williams' 2nd GR (Midlothian, TX)
We see some solders standing around a tank. There are some houses in the background. We see a tank that is cruching stuff. We think they are testing out a new tank to see if it works. Maybe the tank is stuck on all of the things it is trying to run over. We think it is being used in a war and maybe it got broken so they have to retest it.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Welcome to the conversation @Mrs. Williams' 2nd GR! You are noticing the houses in the background and some solders standing around the action happening in the foreground. There have been many ideas about the testing of the tank and you are thinking about the testing of this specific tank that may have broken down. What more can you find?
Soen McCormick (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
I believe this picture was taken during WWI. I also think this picture was during the beginning of tanks. I think they were showing these soldiers/commanding officers what the tank could go through(the tin can buckets). WWI was the age of new inventions including tanks. The way they are dressed makes me think they are somewhere that isn't in the war. I believe they are testing a new tank they might have created or they are investing in this tank. Either that or they are purposely flattening the buckets for a random reason.
Ms. Hakimian's 4th grade (New York)
We think this picture is from WWI. The men in the picture appear to be soldiers watching a tank crushing some materials. We think it takes place about 100 years ago. We also noticed the picture was in black and white so the setting took place long ago. We're wondering what the number on the tank means.

Hello @Ms. Hakimian's 4th grade! You are thinking about the setting and specifically the timeframe of the setting. Since the image is in black and white, you have some idea about this taking place in the past. What do you see that makes you say it could be about 100 years ago?
hailey (nh)
i see people, junk, a tank and house's i think this is in ww1 or ww2 or maybe it was taking place at the end of a war.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@hailey I agree, but how do you know it's a war?
Daniel Hagar (New Hampshire)
It looks like people are standing in front of a tank is running over medel and different matirealls from ww1 witch started on july,28,1914-november,11,1918
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Daniel Hagar why do you think the tank is running over the metal? Also, what is your reasoning behind why you think this is specifically from WWI?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Similar to @Mr. Patterson's English II 6th, many of us think this photo was taken during WW1 while many others are inferring the photo was taken during WW2. There are also many ideas about where in the world this was taking place. @Caleb L. Bartlett and @Brady believe these could be Canadian soldiers because of the specific type of hats they are wearing. Others are looking closely at the different kinds of hats worn by the figures on the right side of the photo and their joyful expressions. And several people have noticed the absence of women in the image. Questions continue to arise as more detailed observations are made. Keep sharing evidence from the image to back up your ideas as they may help others answer their own questions and look deeper. What more can we find?
Devan (newport NewHampshire)
- Whats going on in this picture. I think its a group of soldiers during WW1 testing the light tanks crushing abilities - what makes you say that The tanks looks like its crushing some basic kitchen stuff I think this is during November 11,1918 This picture was taking after the WW1 - This picture was taking because it wanted to show us how it use to be back then
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@Devan How do you know the specific date? This could be any time period.
Elaria (NH)
I can see a tank that the military uses, trash. I think its happening around world war 2. They are crushing trash. I think this photo was taken in Alabama.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Elaria Several folks are wondering and theorizing about where this image was taken. What do you see that makes you say if could be in Alabama?
Chastity (canada)
This looks like a photo from war or after it. it looks like they are trying to destroy something because they are running things over.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Chastity I agree with you that this picture is taken during wartime, however, maybe the people could be testing the tanks capabilities? They are probably not destroying something of their enemies, maybe they are destroying something to see how strong their equipment is.
CJ (canada)
This looks like it was taken awhile ago after a war and the picture is of a group of soldiers. It looks like they are trying to destroy stuff.
t (Canada)
What’s going on? World War soldiers lining up next to a tank. What makes you say that? It makes me say that because the solders are in a line, next to a tank.
monica (mexico)
-whats going on? some soldiers doing world war stuff -what makes you say that? they look like soldiers
Elaria (NH)
@monica haha cool and funny
sandra (windsor ont)
This photo looks like it taken in World War 1 or 2 based on the uniforms and large tank. It looks like they are crushing old metal to possibly make bullets or other weapons.
cameron beaton (Windsor Canada)
i think this image is showing a test the early world war 1 tanks were put to to see if they could concur rough terrain on the battle field. I think this because the battle fields are very rough and this would be a good way to test to see if it could handle big bumps and obstacles. I think these this is during ww1 times because the uniforms arent as complex as ww2 uniforms and the hats look like they might be Australian soldiers.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@cameron beaton Thank you for sharing your observations and ideas. Why are they crushing the pile of objects? You are suggesting they are testing the ability of the tank by using the objects to simulate rough terrain. @sandra is suggesting that they are crushing the objects to recycle the raw material into weapons or bullets. What more can we find?
Don (Ontario, Canada)
In the picture there are what looks to be army people and a military tank. The picture is probably taken in the 1900's . in the background I See a house and the cloud looks spooky. It probably was taken during a war.
Daniel Hagar (New Hampshire)
@Don cool coment
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Don Please tell us more about the clouds. What do you see that makes you say they are spooky? Is your observation of the clouds related to your ideas about this taking place during a war? What more can you find?

1. an army tank is crushing objects while soldiers stand by and watch 2. Because the tank appears to be running over old metal scraps as people in uniforms stand in the background 3. I can see tall buildings with peaks in the background of the picture
zahrah alganim (windsor ontario)
In this picture there is a tank from world war two running over some garbage. I see men standing watching the tank run over the garbage. The men look like solders. I also think this is a photo taken during world war two because its very old. There is also a rip in the right hand corner of the photo. it is also in black and white.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@zahrah alganim Thank you for sharing. You are noticing that the photo is old because it is in black and white and seems to have a rip in the bottom right corner. These details of time passing also leads you to believe that this was taken during WW2. Are there other things you see that makes you think this is from WW2?
Lauren (Ontario)
this picture looks like its showing the war times. in the picture it shows the tank running scraps over which makes me think it was their way of desposing of things in the war since all the chaos was going on they dont have a real way of getting rid of all the garbage
ryan (ontario canada)
It looks like a picture taken at the end of a war and it looks like an army trying to destroy evidence of wrongdoings
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@ryan You and @Lauren are both thinking about why the tank may be driving over the pile of objects. @Lauren is thinking they could be disposing of garbage while you are thinking they are disposing of evidence. What do you see that makes you say that the objects being destroyed are possible evidence of wrongdoings?

this picture looks like it was taken a long time ago maybe 1900's. it looks like the tank if running over old oil containers or some type of trash or scrap. and the people gathered around are part of the neighborhood. maybe the reason the tank is running over the scrap could be political or they're just trying to destroy it
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@christina Other comments have suggested this could be a protest. What do you see that makes you say the tank running over the trash or scrap could be a political action?
Patrick COS (Cleveland, Ohio)
This picture looks like it was taken in the 1900's, possibly during or after world war 2. It looks like a tank from the war either running over a bunch of garbage or the tank is garbage and it is the "scrap yard" of the town. I can see bunch of people crowded around the junk and a house in the background. Also I can see the main gun is missing. I think all of this because the stuff looks like garbage and the tank is over it, The tank also looks like garbage, so that is why I think it is a scrap pile. The reason I think that the tank is garbage is because it looks run down, beat up, rusty, and the main gun and/or the barrel is missing. The reason I think this is during or after world war 2 is because the tank is a T-18 tank. That type of tank was used in world war 2. Also the people crowded around the stuff look like soldiers, maybe soviet soldiers. The reason I think this is in a town not a neighborhood is all the buildings around them. If this were a "scrap yard" then I would guess that the people around that would burn it or do destroy it in one why possible. Some questions I have are.. What is the tank for? Are those people soldiers? Is this a "scrap yard"
Ella aose (New Jersey)
@Patrick I agree with you about the scrap pile idea and the town (also, wow! that's a ton of detail, good job!)
Jane #16 COS (Cleveland, OH)
I think that this was a photo taken of a military tank testing if it can drive over rough terrain. I think this photo was taken during/before World War 1. The tank is small and has a tiny barrel/main gun, unlike the tanks in World War 2 who have a much longer one. This is most likely taken before going to battle because it seems the soldiers are testing if the tank is able to go over metal and bumpy ground. The tank is going over metal buckets and water cans. In the background there are many soldiers that are standing in rows looking at the tank. They do not look too tight, some are not even standing straight up. I can infer that this is not a serious event. Other things that I noticed were that in the right hand bottom corner there is a tare in the photo. There are plenty of houses in the background, and the day seems to be foggy. On the right side of the photo there are men that are not dressed like soldiers, they seem to be laughing about something. That is what I think is going on in this picture. Some questions I have are… What year was this taken in? What war is this? What is the tank doing? What country was this taken in? What is that man in the middle doing? What are the men in the different clothes doing and why are they there? Jane K #16

I think that in this picture has something to do with World War 2 because it in black and white and the image looks old and at the bottom their is a rip and it appears that their is some sort of military tank that says 56 I think this probably is not in the United States because The United States was not in World War 2 until the end and the landscape does not look like The United States, this may be some European town because I see a house I see the tank on top of a bunch of containers, maybe the containers were holding some supplies, also all of the people in the background are men and they are wearing a uniform some of the men look happy others look tired and bored. Still I wonder? What country is this taking place in? Why are their only men in this picture? Why are their so many containers?
Victor COS (COS)
In his picture I think a military of some sort is crushing metal ware probably used by the citizens in the town they are in. The army men are most likely doing this to take away the useful metal buckets, canisters, etc so no one else can use it. The town the men are in is probably a town they have invaded and taken hold of. Why I think this - The men in the photograph are all in army uniform. - The photograph was taken in a town as shown in the background of the photo. - Why else would the tank be driven over a lot of metal ware? My questions, • Where are they? • What is another advantage do they gain by running over metal object?
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Intro to Photo class: Wartime photo maybe WWI. Experimentation with tanks. Collecting metal for scrap metal. Maybe to make bullets. Looks like Europe. WWI uniforms. Victorian style top hats in top right. Is this voluntary giving up of metal? Is this the middle of town? Metal looks like its from the people in the town. There is a tear in the photo. There is one man who isn't wearing a uniform.
Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio)
(This is my new comment) The people in this picture are in army uniform, they are standing around a tank that I think just crashed into some cans and metal junk. I think the army officers are trying to figure out how to remove the tank from this junk. I think this takes place during world war 2. I say that because the picture is in black and white and the tank is in a very old version. (That was a complete educated guess). I can find buildings in the background, along with metal junk and on the right side some men in top hats and suits. Some questions I have include: What army is this? Why is the tank there? Why is that metal junk there? What are the people trying to do? What are those buildings in the background?
MollyD cos (communion of saints school)
i think in this picture that maybe a tank is crushing watering cans and the people are in the military based on their hats and clothes. some questions i have are why are the people dressed in those clothes, why is their a tank and why is it crushing watering cans. and it look's like maybe their on a military base.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Meredith COS and @R.J. shared some observations as well as several questions they have about this image. There is a lot of wondering about why the metal objects are being crushed and who might the people be that watching the scene. Responding to one another’s questions with your ideas helps us build understanding together. What do you think? What more can we find?
Ethan COS (Cleveland,Ohio)
This image appears to have been taken during World War 2. I think this because there is a tank. The tank is being watched by men who look to be in the military. I don't think they are american, I think they are part of the soviet union. The men are probably being shown a new tank that has been made and how strong it is.
Matthew M (cos)
in this picture i can see a tank running over buckets and men in uniforms just watching them i think this is world war one because the quality of this picture and what the men are wearing but i don't think the tank is from world war one because it doesn't look any familiar to what I've seen but this picture is so old it might be a tank of what they used back then. My questions are what year was this taken in? and why is the tank crushing the buckets?
Ella aose (New Jersey)
@Matthew M If you are going with the WWI idea, then I think the tank is crushing the buckets to break them down and make them easier to work with and use to make other weapons and ammo
Christyn (Communion of Saints School)
I think that this picture is shown to be taken a long time ago. Maybe during the World War l. I think this because of the picture being gray and tanks where used around World War l. It looks like the people are in the military because the vehicle looks like a military vehicle called a tank. It's clear that the tank is destroying the silver tin buckets since the tank looks like it's about to roll over the buckets. Questions: - Why is the tank destroying the buckets? - Why are there so many people surrounding the tank? - Who took the photo? - When exactly was the photo taken
Alexis W. (COS)
I think in this picture there is a group of men who just made a tank to go into war for the military. I think this because there is a group of all men, no women and in those times women were not allowed to fight in the wars, unlike today. I also think that a tank was being made because if you look around you can see there are different pieces of metal that look like the pieces of metal on the tank. Some think I notice are that there are men all around, i the background you see the top of the buildings. Those buildings could be government building, store buildings, or the houses of the men in the photo. I think this picture was taken in the late 1800s because of the apparel that the men have on and also from the color of the picture. Another theory I have is that this could e a renaissance fair. I think this because the o the clothes the men in this picture have on. One way my theory wouldn't make sense, though is that there are no women in this photo and even if this was a renaissance fair there would till be women. Another reason I think this is because earlier on I mentioned the buildings in the background. The buildings could be tents that were made to look like buildings. Also the tank looks like one from a different period. Some questions I have are: Where are they? What is that tank made out of? How was the tank made? Did those men make the tank themselves? What year was this picture taken in? What are those buildings in the background? What going on in this picture?
Eva P. COS (Cleveland Heights, OH)
I think the picture this week is taken in an old western town. The reason I think this is because the picture is taken in black and white, all the men are dressed like rangers or police officers, and the house in the background are all spread apart like what you would find in a small town. Also, the ground in the picture is all sand like what you would find in a desert. It also looks like some one took a picture of this picture because you can see aging and rips in the picture. A main part of the picture is a tank running over metal objects, most of them being oil cans. My questions are: Why is the tank running over metal objects? Why is nobody in the picture reacting to this? Is this a protest? What is the purpose/meaning of the picture?
Gabe COS (Cleveland,OH)
I believe that, based off of the color of the photo, the men (and their clothing), as well as the surrounding buildings filling up the background of the photo suggest that this image was captured in the early 20th century. The clothing and the large tank sitting at center stage are those used during war time. Because I guessed the photo was taken some point between 1910 and 1930, I can infer that the conflict was World War I. WWI was named the "war to end all wars" for multiple reasons. One of which was the devastating technology created and produced by the warring nationalities. One of the war's most destructive creations was the tank. The idea of the tank was to be able to go over rough terrain, like that of the many trenches dug during the war. Although this wide assortment if cans doesn't truly replicate a trench, it can still provide valuable information and results on the durability of what must be one of the first tank design in the history of warfare.
Roberto (Tokyo)
I think the picture was in 1939 due to the fact that in this photo there is light tank also known as the T-18 which was made in 1931. The light tank was used for the Soviet Union during World War II. I think this was one of the models and they had it for safe keeping so they decided to crush some good old buckets and water cans with it. Another possible thing is that this could be a camp they are training by destroying any possible water that they had or some soldier did something and all the other soldiers are paying the price as well. Questions: Where are they? Is that a camp? Why are they crushing water jugs and can? When is it.
Brielle (Cleveland, Ohio)
@Roberto they are Americans?
Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio)

Mr. Patterson's English II 6th (DHS)
Half of the class thinks the picture is from WWI and half think WWII. Reason for the World War inference is this: the presence of a tank. One student thinks it's a French tank. Several students think they are testing the tank out to see what it can do because they are all spectating and marveling at this tank.
Calvin D. (That Van, OH)
I believe that this is a scene honoring military casualties during WWII. After doing some research, I have concluded that this is part of the allied forces because that is a Chinese tank in the foreground over a stack of old military cooking pots. I can tell that this is at the hardest time of the war because this month marks the 75th anniversary of the heart of World War II, and the men lined up behind the tank look serious and sad. Some questions I have are: Where in the world are they, why are the men on the very bottom right looking happy and laughing, and what are the ropes attached to the pots for?
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Calvin D. Why do you think that this is a scene honoring military casualties? What makes you think that?
Brady F (Cleveland Heights, OH)
In the picture, there seems to be a group of military officers and weapon designers. The picture is colorless which tells me that it was taken before color imagery was introduced. The military tank in the photo looks to be dated back to WWI. From reading Eye Witness books about WWI, I have seen pictures and multiple captions about common tanks at the time. The tank in the photo looks exactly like the ones noted in the book I read. The tanks all had a hatch hat the top that looked like a 3 Dimensional oval, or in other words, an ovoid. The officers and weapon testers seem to be testing the durability of the tank. They also might be testing to see what kinds of terrain the tank can be used on. They were using metal scraps to test this because simulations weren't invented yet. I also noticed that the buildings in the background are very modern for that time frame of 1914-1918. The people in the photo also look to be wearing military uniforms and coats. That is why I thought the people were military men. Women didn't serve as gun handlers in combat, that is why the photo must take place in WWI. I say this because the people in the photo are all men. I also have a question to go along with this response. Where does the picture take place?
Calvin D. (That Van, OH)

In this picture I think that a mini tank is crushing watering cans. I am lead to believe that the cans are watering cans because I can see the sprouts. I thing that the men in the background are in the military I think this because of what they are wearing, they appear to be wearing a military uniform. I think that this picture was taken some time before 1960 I think this because that was when black and white photos were popular. Some questions I still have are why is the mini tank crushing watering cans.
Charlie (Cleveland, Ohio)
This picture was taken around 1900-1920 because the first color camera was made in 1907. The color camera was not used much until later in the 1920's. This leads to the conclusion that this war was WW1, the first world war. The soldier are most likely falling back after a invasion and they do not want there enemy to gain anything. So, they are destroying all things that will be left behind, including metal which could be reused to make more weapons by the enemy. Things I noticed 1. The tank has the numbers 2800 on the wheel. 2. There is a city in the background 3. It seems to be cold because some of the soldiers have coats on. Questions 1. What do the numbers on the wheel stand for? 2. What's going on in this picture? Statement GO KOBE AND GIGI
Bridget COS (Cleveland, OH)
What's going on in this picture? First off we see that there are 20+ men in uniform, and I believe they are in some sort of military alliance or army, based on there clothing and stance. These men are watching some sort of machine/robot that is crushing many different pots, pans, and water tubs. Then in the background we see many houses, maybe a church sort of building, and what looks to be a warehouse. Looking at the actual picture we notice that it is not very high quality & it's black and white inferring that this picture was taken in the 20th century, maybe the early to mid-20th century. What I think is happening is that they might be testing this new sort of bull-dozer type machine, to maybe prepare it for battle, or for some different machinery use, in the fields, or another place. Reasons I think this is because obviously especially in the early to mid-20th century they were in short supply of things because of the war, and wouldn't just decide to crush a ton of valuable pots and pans for the fun of it. We can also see many watching which might infer the importance of this machine. Other things I see, are a rope weaving through the line of metal objects, and the number 56 on this machine. My questions are: What is the machine used for? Who are these men? When and where was this picture taken?
Caleb L. Bartlett (Cleveland Heights, OH)
I have an idea of what is going on in this picture. These men are Canadian, I know this because the hats the are wearing are traditional Canadian hats. This picture is very old, I know this because there is a crack in the picture itself. My suspicions lead me to believe that it is summer or spring. I think that the men are either crushing luxury/modern items for training or that the are just having fun. These men are most likely in the army because of there suits. IN conclusion, these men are CANADIAN.
Calvin D. (That Van, OH)
Dear @Caleb L. Bartlett: What do you think the Canadians are doing?
Della D (Cleveland Heights , OH)
I think that a protest is happening in this picture. I think this because a tank is running over many oil cans. I think this picture is very old, this is because the picture is in black and white, and we do not use oil barrels. Some things I notice are: There are only men in the background, and there is a house. Some questions I have are: what is the tank running over? why is it running over things?
Matthew M (cos)
@Della D what protest do you think it might be?
peter COS (ohio)
I think that this is just a bunch of trash from the military, which includes a tank which may be running over the rest of the trash. I think this because of the fact that all of the barrels are in disarray and the tank is already starting to crush some of them, or the tank is trash as well. Some other things I notice is that the picture's color and quality suggest that the photo was taken a while ago. Also, the architecture in the houses in the backdrop, the build of the tank, and the apparel of the soldiers suggest that the picture is old. The building to the right may be a military outpost.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@peter COS You are looking closely at the background of the image and concluding that, like many others, this photo was taken in the past. What do you see that makes you say the building on the right could be a military outpost?
Meredith COS (Ohio)
What I think is going on in the picture is that these people, most likely soldiers because of what they're wearing and the obvious tank, are 'disposing' these cans/buckets by crushing them with the tank, or they are crushing them to create more weapons/tools (etc). Also by the quality of the photo, I can assume this photo was taken awhile ago. Some of my questions are: Why are they crushing these cans? What year was this photo taken in? Where was photo taken?
Matthew M (cos)
@Meredith COS do you have any idea what war this might be or do you think this is not a war and there destroying the buckets to make weapons
Brielle (Cleveland, Ohio)
@Matthew M or they are running over the jugs/buckets to see if it can withstand running over things like that.
R.J. (COS)
I think that this picture is showing a military tank test. they are trying to test if it is able to go over rough terain in this particuliar test. another possible theory is that this machine has crashed and those are police in the backround not army. some questions I have are who are the people in the backround and what are they doing? what is the tank doing and why is it doing it? why are the containers there? is that wire on some of the objects barbed wire? is there anyone in that tanker?
Pamela Surber (Kentucky)
The picture in question shows destroying stills
Frank (SMS)
I think that the people are in the military because of the type of hat they have on. I think they are crushing old water cans with a mini tank. I think the water cans are water cans because I can see the spouts, and I think the mini tank is a mini tank because its mini and a tank.
Hunter (SMS)
It looks like an older tank is crushing a bunch of water cans after or before war has happened. The reason they are doing this is because to see what it can go over and not go over.
Braedon (sms)
It looks to be in WWl they are testing the new renault 17 that was made for the war. It is looking like they're seeing what it will drive over because if not it could get stuck on the trenches that the germans dug.

i think it on world war one because the tank it looks old and it small the tanks in ww2 were much bigger and the picture is black and white.I think they are also testing the tank because they seem to put cans and stuff in there to see if the tank can past through all of that.
Mr. Patterson's English II 5th (DHS)
One student thinks there is a war going on because she sees a tank and men in uniform. Another thinks that they are experimenting with metal-crushing for the first time, and they are using a tank as the crushing device. Another thinks these are British Army soldiers using a tank after liberating a town. Maybe this is a symbolic event.

This picture I think it's in a war, and their tanks going through towns. The men that are standing there are either soldiers or a person who lives in the town.

i think it maybe it was a old tank from like world war 1 or something that ended up maybe washed up in the trash and all the soilders are looking at it or they are shocked about what they found on the other side of the picture theta we cant see.

This picture looks like it was from the world war and trying to run over garbage so they can test there tanks and what they run over. i can tell how the picture is old because its black and white and the tank looks old. The soldiers are where the same thing and they are wearing these soldier costume. they are running over jugs and seeing how well does the tank go over the jugs.

Brady (Canada)
This picture here seems to be taking place during the First World War, I can tell because the picture is black and white, and the tank looks really old. The tank appears to be running over and crushing some metal jugs. The soldiers watching this appear to be wearing ranger hats, why could that be? Are they part of the Canadian military or something? The stuff the tank is running over looks like jugs that's used for making alcohol.
Connor (Canada)
@Brady like how you put alot of detail in your writing
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
So what is up with all the stuff on the ground? We've had a wide range of idea here. Is this alcohol making equipment being destroyed during the American Prohibition? Or is the metal there to test the test tank's performance over rough terrain? Recycling? Punishment/destruction? Ceremony? What more can we learn by looking closely? What more can we find?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
There are a few dozen men in this picture and they are looking at something. There is a large tank that is running over metal buckets and other things. The men are all in uniform which suggests that they may be in a war. Because the picture is in black and white this is from a long time ago. Their uniforms also tell me it is from a long time ago because they are pretty old fashioned. They may be analyzing the destruction from something as well.
Cael (Canada)
It looks like they created a new tank and there testing how tough the tank is when it runs over something sharp. It makes me say that because there's a tank. (NOT FINISHED)
Carter (Alberta)
@Cael I think that you are that the are testing a new tank.
Soren (canada)
Why would there be a tank there, was there a war, and what country were they in. I think they are testing a new tank. Are they testing the metal cans.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Soren Thank you for joining the conversation and sharing your curiosity. Similar to @trinity, you are thinking they could be testing the tank; however, you are also wondering if it is the metal cans that are being tested. What more can you find?
ms calder class (canada)
I think that they were trying to move then metal containers with the small tank but they put it in reverse.
trinity (canada)
In this photo it looks like they want to try out their new equipment. when are they going to run over stuff in the war? they are crushing metal while people are watching they could be testing the tank
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@NyaB senses there may have been a tragedy while @Mckenzi suggests there is a more jovial nature to the photograph. What do we see that can help us understand the mood in the photo?
Calvin D. (That Van, OH)
@VTS Moderator: Well, The look on the men's faces suggest that this is a solemn occasion.
Hannah (canada)
I think that they are recycling metal. I think it's an old garbage truck.
Carter (Alberta)
@Hannah they might be our the are going to make bullets out of the metal.
kyra (sms)
It looks like there are people standing by old pieces of metal observing when the tank is smashing all the scraps of metal.
spencercowherd (camdenton mo)
it looks like they are testing a ww1 tank that I saw in a museum or they are using it to crush metal to reuse something like that.
Alexis (sms)
It looks like the time period is in World War I and the German tank is crushing leftover supplies or trash and people are there to put stuff in the pile and it could be stuff that can´t be washed. It also can be stuff that are from destroyed houses and buildings that people lost while they went through the houses at battle.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Alexis What do you see that makes you say German? Previous commenters have mentioned th US, France, and the UK, but you are the first to mention Germany.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Sonali aose you are also thinking this may have happened during Prohibition in the US, but you've brought in a new idea. Perhaps the destruction of the equipment is to prohibit the solders's drinking as opposed to the soldiers regulating civilians' behavior. What more can we find?
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this photo we see multiple soldiers standing behind a tank. I assume that this was taken during one of the world wars based on the uniform and aged appearance of the picture. The soldiers are staring intently at the tank in the forefront of the photo. The tank has the number 56 on it. Based on the time period this could be the 56th tank ever made. I believe that they are watching a demonstration of the tank's durability due to the tank being driven over the large tin cans lined up in front of it.
Kayla (SMS)
I think the soldiers are lined up in the picture and they are get ready for for with another country and they have this big tank in the picture going over stuff and they are changing to see if the tank that they have in the picture can go over stuff like trash cans, pots and pans for food, and pipes etc just in case the tank it can't go over stuff during the war that they are going to with another country.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Kayla What do you see that makes you sat they are about to go war with another country?
Jeffrey (fdhs)
I think they are crushing all of the metal that is the enemies so they can make bullets.
Mckenzi (SMS)
The is crushing the metal and the people are having a really good time just chilling and watching the tank crush the metal.
Mr. Patterson's English II 4th (DHS)
Here are various inferences made in Mr. Patterson's 4th period English II class: One student thinks that they are recycling the metal because they are crushing it with the tank. Another says that it is probably a new tank, and they are testing it out, seeing if it will flip (because it's running over stuff). -Erik Another student thinks it's some kind of symbolic gesture.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Thank you @Mr. Patterson's English II 4th for joining the conversation...can you say more about the "symbolic gesture"? What do you see that makes you say that?
elijah (sms)
In this photo they look like they are trying out the new technology which is called the tank and to see if it works. They also look like they are seeing if the tank is strong enough to handle rough terrain.
Elijah (canada alberta)
@elijah i like how discriptive you are about what you think whats giong on
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This picture seems to be taken around the first world war. I say this because the tank looks very old, and probably was made around that time period. The tank is crushing something. The things the tank is crushing seems to be alcohol making equipment. The men standing around the tank are probably in the military. I would say the reason the alcohol equipment is being crushed is because this picture was taken close to the time when alcohol was banned from the United States. They must have been destroying the alcohol so the soldiers not drink.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hmmm, so what is happening in the foreground with the tank. There are many ideas here including: testing a new tank; crushing metal for recycling; a demonstration or ceremony; destruction of property such as alcohol making apparatus. What do you all think? What do you see in the photo that supports or perhaps, refutes these ideas? What more can we find?
Ian (Stewart Middle School)
I think what really is going on in the picture is that they are about to go into war or what happened after the war because there is an army and a tank in the picture.
NyaB (Virginia)
There was a very tragic accident with the tank. The men are apart of the military and are paying their respect to the tragedy.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@NyaB what do you see that makes you say a tragedy may have just occurred? Thank you.
gabrielle (sms)
I think its about world war 1 because there is a big tank and soldiers, I also think there trying to test the durabilty of the tank to go in to war. I also think they might be cleaning up trash to.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@gabrielle Thank you for your ideas. I just saw that @Caleb is thinking this may be WW2, but you're suggesting it may be WW1. What do you see in the picture that suggest this may be WW1?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Gabrielle I also noticed the soldiers standing around the tank. I agree that it is in a war. However, do you think the tank in crushing the items or trying to pick them up?
Caleb (sms)
I think it is in world war 2 and the u.s has taken the enemy down and they have there materials and they are going to crush them with this tank.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @Caleb - what do you see that makes you say this may be taking place during WWII? Previous comments mention the possibilities of WWI, Vietnam War, and perhaps not a time of war at all.
Matthew H (Roswell, GA)
The tank really do be crushing that metal. They are having a good time just chilling.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Matthew H What makes you say that these people are "just chilling" and "having a good time"? In my opinions the people in this picture look very serious.
Mrs. Fairchild (Roswell GA)
We believe they are testing the tank and that the soldiers are watching and not currently worried about fighting. We think this takes place in Europe in the early-mid 1900s. We noticed that the photo cuts off the people on thr right and they are not looking at the tank - perhaps there is another one they are looking at that is also being tested..?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mrs. Fairchild - thank you for joining the conversation. What do you see that makes you say this may be Europe and that the time period ay be mid 1900s?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Mrs. Fairchild I agree that this picture is from a very long time ago, mostly because of the clothing they are wearing and because it is in black and white. I like how you added the possibility of multiple tanks being tested here.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mrs Wagner's Class is introducing a new idea to this discussion. Perhaps this may not be a time of war. Perhaps this is the time of Prohibition in the United States (1920-1933) when there was a ban on alcoholic beverages. Could it be the military are here "to destroy objects used to create illegal alcohol"? What more can we find?
ELA (MA)
Our thoughts: -This is a battle during a war. --Someone was run over by the tank. -Either WWI or WWII and a tank is going to blow up and abandoned house. -This is during the Vietnam War because of how they are dressed. The tank is running over the trash. -I see a tank crushing trash. -This picture looks old and I see military people-1942. The tank is crushing trash.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@ELA I agree that this picture was taken place in a war and that there is a tank but, what makes you say someone was crushed by this tank? Thank you.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Sonali aose Thank you for reading and responding. This is great way to deepen the conversation.
MB (Camdenton middle school)
I thank they are getting in ready for war or they are testing there tank's.
K. Probst (Ottawa, ON, Canada)
Thoughts from Ms. Probst's class: Maybe they are crushing metal to make ammunition. This might be from WWII - tank and soldiers. We notice that the soldiers are wearing the same uniform. Perhaps they are intentionally destroying people's pessessions.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@K. Probst - Hello and thank you for joining the conversation. What do you see specifically that makes you say this could have happened during World War 2?
Mrs Wagner's Class (UK)
The tank is being used to destroy objects used to create illegal alcohol during Prohibition. The metal tanks have hoses coming out of them, which is how alcohol was made during Prohibition. The local guard is watching, and some men in hats are behind the tank; they might be the leaders of the town.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Mrs Wagner's Class If in the picture they are destroying objects used to make illegal alcohol during the Prohibition. Why are they using a tank to do it?
Meadowlane Magic (Kitchener, Ontario)
I see a tank crushing trashcans and solders watching.I think that the tank is malfunctioning or its' a ceremony. I wonder where this is and why they're doing it.
Myra Burne (Pennsylvania)
Its a tank that the military is gonna set on fire or use to crush cans for recycling.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Myra Burne What do you see that makes you say the tank may get set on fire? Thank you.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mrs. K 094, like may of you, are thinking about where this could be happening. They are thinking that geographically this could be in the United Kingdom. @Photo class Villa Maria College suggested America. What are other ideas. Just by looking closely, what are your ideas about where in the world this photograph may have been taken.
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@VTS Moderator I don't know too much about tanks but I do know the names of a couple. This seems to be a Renault FT17. After doing some research I learned this is from WWI in France, this was one of the most revolutionary tanks.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Justin Bolsoy - what is it about the tank (shape, size, other details) that would let us know it's a Renault FT1? For those of us who may not be familiar with tanks (like me!), we learn from each other's knowledge. Thank you.
usa (New Hampshire)
a tank and people.people are looking at the tank.in a sandy town there is sand.looks like after world war 2
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@usa What do yo see that makes you say this may have occurred after a war and specifically WW2? Thank you.
Mrs. Fairchild 2nd (Roswell GA)
We all agree they are testing the tank. We are thinking possibly before or during WW2 based on the model of the tank - Renault FT-17..? We think they are in a downtime and look relaxed and the guys on the right are laughing and have on more expensive clothes - possibly they gave money to build the tank..?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @Mrs. Fairchild 2nd - you are drawing our attention to the tank. What do you see that makes you say "Renault FT-17"?
usa (New Hampshire)
I looks like a little tank that is crushing metal cans and buckets.
cameron (New Hampshire)
i think its a mini new tank and there trying to see the power of the tank for it can go out to war or not in 2002 people are defending it for it for no one tries to take it or hijack it
Jason (New Hampshire)
i think this photo is back in ww1 or ww2 because there all wearing army suits and there is a tank that appears to be crushing metal mabeye the metal is being crushed to salute the people who died serving our country
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Jason what do you see that makes you say this could be WW1? What do you see that makes you say perhaps WW2?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mrs. Alexander's Class is approaching this image in a few ways: the people; the type of situation; the setting; and time period. Based on the clothing, they are thinking there are both soldiers and civilians. And perhaps they are not in a "dangerous" situation as the stance seems to be more leisurely and some may even be laughing. What more can we tell about these people?
Mrs. Alexander's 2nd GR (Midlothian, TX)
@VTS Moderator We notice that some of the soldiers are wearing a coat. So it may be cold outside. They all seem to have on the same style of hat. We can tell it has something around it, like a braided rope or something. Some are carrying different types of artillery belts. And some look more formal than others. The other people, possibly civilians, look a bit older than the other group of men.
Mr. Patterson's English II 2nd (DHS)
These are various inferences made in Mr. Patterson's 2nd Period English 2 Class. Perhaps they are testing the power of the tank. Maybe they are smashing the metal so they can later make protective gear out of it. Maybe these guys participated in building the tank, and they are testing it out and seeing what it can do. Crushing stuff for pure entertainment? War is hard.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mr. Patterson's English II 2nd - Good morning and thank you for sharing the multiple perspectives. What do you see in the picture that supports the 4 different interpretations? Thank you.
Mrs. Alexander's Class (Midlothian, TX)
In this photo we see a lot of soldiers surrounding the tank. There are also other people in the background laughing. They are dressed differently than the soldiers. We see the tank crushing metal and other objects. We think that because they are standing around watching that it is not a dangerous situation. There are houses in the background that people may live in. We wonder if they are abandoned. The tank has number 56 on it. So is this the 56th tank ever made? This happened a long time ago. Maybe in one of the World Wars.
Natalie & J (Oviedo FL)
@Mrs. Alexander's Class Hello! Therapist and Resident from a Assisted Living Facility here. Resident J believes that the 56 comes from the battalion number operating it. We also believe it was from one of the WW, specifically WWI. He also agrees that are training, and testing the tank to see how it goes through terrains. Specifically, metal terrains — the metal tins can simulate crushing cars or motorcycles, so perhaps they’re preparing to use this tank in a civilian area. We are guessing this is France circa WWi.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Natalie & J Thank you for your rich addition to this discussion. Can you share what you notice that supports the idea that this may be in France?
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Color Photo Class We think this is an old B/W photo scanned due to the crease in lower right. Possibly from WWI/1910's. Shows a tank demonstrating its power or recycling/crushing the metal for use to build another tank perhaps. The people look like something of authority due to their dress/hats (soldiers/US Marshalls). Scrap metal for the war, rationing things.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @Photo class Villa Maria College! You are noticing not just the image, but the materiality of the photograph. You observed the crease on the bottom right, which indicates that the original paper photograph was probably scanned to created the digital version that we are viewing. You agree with @sm that this may be happening in WW1. What do you see that makes you say the figures may be American?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Good morning - I look forward to reading your thoughts as we look closely together. Immediately you're thinking about the action happening here, where and when this could be taking place. @sm is thinking this may have happened during a time of war specifically World War 1 as the black and white quality may indicate that this happened further in the past. Other ideas? And don't forget to share the details in the picture that support your thoughts.
Kelsey (sms)
What i think is happening in this picture is the people are watching the tank and seeing if it would smash the other metals and seeing if its heavy enough or it needs something else.
Austin (SMS)
In this picture we see that this is an old one. I think that these soldiers are remembering this tank because of what it did for their country. They may have lost someone special and this was their tank.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Austin I agree with your conclusion that this must be an old photo. Though, if you believe that this was a person's tank that they lost in battle, what do you presume that the tin cans are for?
Ben (sms)
The tank is running over something that is someone stuff or a family.
Brennan (SMS)
I think that these soldiers are looking at a new tank that will run over trash and help them from stopping due to trash. The tank is a one man tank that will be more compact and fast. THis means the weight will be reduced and favor the speed will increase. They are new so there is a very small number of the tanks available.
Dylan (SMS)
I think in the picture is on the date of WWI because there is a tank and it looks like they're on a farm because if you look at the stuff there running over its farm equipment. The soldiers are watching the tank so it could be any war but the reason why I say WWl is because it looks old.
Jace (SMS)
In this image it looks like maybe a group of people are selling metal and steel for money. this picture is definitely old, I can tell because the picture is black grey and white, and they are wearing what seems to be police suits.
Cason (SMS)
In this picture I think they are using the tank to squish the cans to get scrap metal to be used to make other things.
Devin Johnson (UrMoms)
It looks like a military base maybe testing out the tank
sm (sms)
I think this picture talks about the WWI because of the tank that is there and the people are wearing suits the soldiers and there is a lot of equipment.
Kayley (SMS)
Well it looks like an old tank like one of the first ones built and soldiers are standing all around it with parts of medal everyware. It looks like it's crushing the medal down.
Mrs. K 094 (Athens, Greece)
We think that this picture dates from WWI and the location is somewhere, perhaps a farming community in the UK. It looks like the tank is being tested for its all-terrain capabilities by having it run over some metallic farm equipment.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Mrs. K 094 I agree with your theory that they are testing the capabilities of the tank. I also think that it is very possible that this is a farming community because the tank is demonstrating running over what appears to be tin watering cans. Though what lead you to believe that this picture was taken in Europe?
Justin Bolsoy (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Title: New beginnings This picture represents more than just a tank.
Ricky HPhysics (Brooks school)
This is a photo from older times. This is because of the Black and White image and the old military uniforms of the men. They also have access to the tank. There are also a few men in non-military uniforms and they could be very wealthy. This is because of their top hats and their long coats. The tank could be a demonstration on how to use the tank and the metal is there to show its force by crushing it.
Shalini HPhysics (Brooks School)
It looks like there is a tank trying to destroy water troughs and other metal canisters. It the background there are what looks like soldiers from the past. My guess is that they are in England, or somewhere in Europe. On the right of the tanks there is higher ranker officers, or commanders, that are watching it happen. The soldiers don’t look too excited by this presentation, so it is probably a common scene. There probably need the metal parts.
Natalie H Honors Physics (Brooks School)
I think this picture is representing how successful their tank is. This happened a long time ago because of the outfits they are wearing and the top hats some are wearing. The people who are wearing top hats might be the professors and the guys in old looking uniforms might be the students. They are also crushing metal items to show the strength of the tank and how well it might do in real life practices.
Sam- HPhysics (Brooksschool)
I believe that the soldiers are learning and observing the ability of the tank. Since the picture and black white and from the style of the clothing that people are wearing, the picture would be from a long time ago. It might be when the tank first got introduced to the soldiers and started to use them during the war.
Addie Branca H Physics (Brooks School)
This picture is an older image of a group of soldiers watching a tank rolling over a pile of materials. Possibly to show or teach the soldiers what the tank can do. I say this because the picture is black and white and the soldiers are wearing outdated uniforms. There are also some men in the far right of the picture who are wearing top hats that were considered fancy years ago. The soldiers seems to be observing the tank closely which makes me think they are trying to learn something from the demonstration. I believe this picture is from WWI because that was when a lot of new war technology was introduced.
ELA (MA)
We have a few ideas about what is going on in this picture: -A tank is crushing watering cans. It is an old tank, probably from WWI or WWII. The people are standing there watching the trucks crush the cans. -There is an old tank. Someone died in the tank-the people are praying that is is going to a better place. I think it might be during WWI or WWII.
Eliza (Brooks School)
This picture is in black and white, which suggests that it was taken a while ago. From the uniforms of the men standing in uniform in the background and the tank in the foreground, this picture looks like it was taken during a war. The tank is driving over a large pile of metal which might be because the war needs to use the metal for something else.
James Wodarski HPhysics (Brooks School)
I believe that this picture is being taken in an older setting due to the black and white photo and the uniforms that the soldiers in the background are wearing. We can see that the tank is running over some metal and plastic objects. I have two conclusions on what this could mean; either they are demonstrating their power by showing what the tank can do, or they are showing people how to use the tank.
Emma (Cooperative Middle School)
I believe that the men standing in the background are workers who are on strike. They are using the tank to destroy what appear to be metal pots and other tin items. The workers may have gone on strike due to unfair payment or poor working conditions.
Ginger (H Physics Brooks School)
This picture is from older times because it is in black and white and there are soldiers wearing old uniforms and hats. The tank is rolling over old metal and other materials, showing the men how powerful it is. There are a few men to the far right who may be of a higher class because of their fancy top hat and clothes, and who could be selling the tank to the men, or viewing its power.
Evan (North Andover, MA)
H. Physics, In the picture, there is a WW1 tank which is being shown off to some British or Australian troops probably (I think this because of their interesting hats). The two men in the top hats are either trying to sell a tank to the army or teach the soldiers how to operate them.
Elijah (nantucket)
It looks like a Tank is being tested by how much stuff it can run over or maybe it is an after war ceremony and destroying the enemy stuff but I think it is testing the tank more than war ceremony
Lynette Indof (Rostraver Elementary)
The soldiers are remembering the war. The tank was taken over by the soldiers and is now going to the scrap yard with the rest of the metals.
PrestonHonorsPhysics (Brooks School)
It looks like this picture is from a long time ago. It's black and white and the uniforms are different from the uniforms today. It appears that soldiers are watching a tank running over metal items. Maybe it is to demonstrate how strong the tank is.
Marco Martinez Honor Physics (Brooks School)
What I believe is going on in this picture is that we are at war and these soldiers are being demonstrated on how to use the tanks when at war. They could also be being demonstrated on how powerful and heavy the tank is. I know this because of the uniformed people in the picture and the utensils being crushed by the tank.
H physics Nick (Brooks School)
I believe that they are crushing scrap metal to be transported easier to be used as material.
Tabor Wilson Hphysiscs (MA)
I think that this may be a picture of people trying to sell a tank to the army. in the far right, there are two men in top hats which may indicate high society or upper class. I think that this photo was taken during world war 1
Nathan McCabe HPhysics (Brooks School)
This image appears to be from a time of war. It looks like a tank is running over a bunch of metal cans and canisters. I believe this picture could be an image of a US military group during a tank demonstration during WW2
William A. Griffith (Michigan)
It's Prohibition publicity stunt and the US Army is using an M17 WW1 tank to crush confiscated illegal Stills.
Bendegúz (Hungary)
I think that these gentlemen are trying to press some rubbish against the ground with that tank.
Tajay glenn (Nantucket,ma)
I see a punch of army, tank, garbage on the floor and the tank is going over the trash to test it out for Wll.
