Mrs. Clinton, You Already Beat Bernie Sanders. Trump Is the Opponent Now.

Maya , Mrs Clinton has the right to speak out ; whether you or anyone else objects , this is still a free country . Thank you for enabling all the Hillary haters to vent ; it is articles like these that stir them up , they too are entitled to their opinion , however it was not objective of you . Am disappointed with the NYTs for printing a very one sided view . As far as Mr. Sanders goes , his campaigning vigorously as you put it , was a bit too late ; he knew his campaign had contributed to discrediting her too and done some damage . Why this article was at all necessary is questionable as your employer had just endorsed two women as their choice and not Bernie . I can tell you he will not be the nominee ; and you're right in that area , the rest of the country gets to vote too and no matter how well he does they will not vote for a socialist . That is a given . The Democrats know it and will not risk losing any chance of defeating Trump as they are aware this will definitely give Trump four more years. Back at you ," wow how rude ."

When the Clinton-Warren-Sanders circular firing squad has expended all their ammunition and mutually discredited all 3 of them, we may yet get the first woman president - Amy Klobuchar, a uniter who has stood above this fray.
LSamson (Florida)
I wish Bernie would step back and take care of his health and family. He would not be intimidated by Trump BUT as said by several below, he would be labeled loudly and continuously as "Socialist" until he lost big time to an inferior person. He is not electable and is once again causing a lack of unity among Democrats. We are not there yet with "universal health care". Equally, I wish HRC would step back and not take part in the election unless she has something positive to say to the eventual nominee. She had her chance and blew it. She needs to spend some time studying HUBRIS so that she understands how it took her down.
Just 4 Play (Fort Lauderdale)
For the first time in my life I agree with Hilliary. Bernie Sanders would be a disaster as President. He has accomplished very little in his political life. His ideas are horrible unless you want the US to become a socialist country. We need leadereship and an accomplished person in the white house after this November and Bernie is not the one meeting the criteria. Bernie as the nominee gives us 4 more years of the Donald. God help us all!
cassandra (littleton, colorado)
I am profoundly disappointed in Sanders for being a self-absorbed, self-aggrandizing politician who, just like trump, blames people for not bowing at his feet, while watching his supporters do the same. The split is his to own, and if Clinton wants to speak to it, she has that right. The only people who love Sanders are the people who love Sanders. If masculine hegemony and his inflated ego bully his way to the nomination, it is not my job or Clinton's to save the masses from their blind spot. You can think I should think what you think, but I do not. His arrogance is equal to trump's, with better morals. His supporters are as blindly loyal. If Sanders secures the nomination, we all get what you deserve.
Kathryn Kolb (Alma, MI)
Although I voted for her (who in their right mind would vote for Trump?), I didn't like Hilary. Who is she to say nobody likes Bernie Sanders? Hilary's time is long past. She should stop weighing in.
Norman Dale (British Columbia)
Her obtuseness about this shows one of the reasons Hillary managed to lose to Trump. She just doesn’t get it and obviously never will.
Judy (Calif)
To the media quit asking for her opinion. To Mrs Clinton, please just back away from the mic, enjoy your grandchildren and write books. You are an amazing woman and I am really sorry you didn't become president but you are just a lightening rod for controversy and we don't need anymore right now.
Lisa (Expat In Brisbane)
She’s a private citizen. She answered a question. I find it amusing that whenever the least criticism of Bernie is made, his loyalists start peeping about “unity.” Where were they in 2016, when it became clear he couldn’t win but he insisted on staying in the game? This is the primary. I want all candidates thoroughly vetted. That includes scrutiny of Bernie Sanders —his positions, his record, and his tactics. That didn’t happen in 2016, but it’s starting to happen now. Good! And yeah, I personally think that as he is more and more known, aside from the most fact-averse adoring minions, people will see what I see: a mendacious hypocrite who refused to finalise his 2016 FEC filings and is waaay too comfortable with dishonest and abusive tactics so long as they benefit him. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.
James L. (New York)
The Hillary grudge is doing nothing but helping the Republican ticket. Though I wonder if Bernie once told Hillary that she (also), being a woman, could not be elected president?
TRS (Boise)
I'm as anti-Trump as anyone and begrudgingly voted for Clinton, as I wanted the Democrats to get a better candidate. My hunch was now correct. I'm hoping the party can get rid of anything Clinton and move forward. She's a reprehensible person who frankly needs to go away, or perhaps just focus on being a 1-percenter and getting $50,000 per speech.
Jean (Cleary)
If Hilary keeps acting this way, nobody is going to like her either. She needs to grow up. She has a short memory. Sanders campaigned heavily for her. She just did not show up in some States because she thought she did not have too. Her mistake, no one else's.
Banjokatt (Chicago, IL)
I read somewhere she has already walked back her statement, but the damage has already been done.
Doug Karo (Durham, NH)
Isn't it possible that she might feel if she couldn't win the presidency, no one else in her party should either?
Pegasus (Portland, Oregon)
Clinton defenders, is it THAT hard to say "she's wrong on this one"? Under the threat of a second Trump term, for *Hillary Clinton* to suggest she won't "vote blue, no matter who,"--I am aghast you're defending this. Stubborn, prideful, dangerous. It is heartening to see that there are some Clinton supporters reasonable enough to disparage this particular behavior and we haven't gone 100% tribal.
Patti O'Connor (Champaign, IL)
Oh for crying out loud. Why should Sec. Clinton endorse anyone before one single primary or caucus has taken place? She doesn't owe Bernie Sanders or anyone anything.
Diane (Eugene OR)
Defeating Donald Trump is imperative to preserving our democracy: personal feelings must be set aside in service to this goal. Mrs. Clinton was wrong to make these remarks, which can only serve as ammunition for the Republicans should Senator Sanders become the nominee. She should walk them back. But I disagree with some of the comments here that say she lost the 2016 election because she is unpleasant, narcissistic, or holds grudges. Look at who won the election if you want proof that this is a specious argument. She wasn’t an ideal candidate (neither were Kerry or Gore), but James Comey, the Russians, and Trump’s appeal to the worst in the natures of disaffected Americans had more to do with her electoral loss than her personality did. That’s been a Republican trope for decades and we shouldn’t buy into it. Let’s mend the fences instead.

Warren and then Clinton. Seems Bernie may just be scaring the Corporate wing.
lc (Austin, TX)
Mara, I watch you often on TV. Not only are you a beautiful young woman, but you are bright beyond your years. I thank you for writing a peaceful, pointed and piercing request of Mrs. Clinton to stand down. When in the course of human events Mrs. Clinton, when you begin to hurt the union of Democrats for which we all stand, you must take a deep breath and move away. You still have the power for your words to be written about, but please let your words be about defeating the autocrat that allowed a foreign power to help get him get elected not a Democrat now running against the autocrat. You must, respectively Mrs Clinton, let go. You’ve said enough, we MUST defeat Trump, and you are not helping. Thank you Mara for producing the words so many of us wanted said in a respectful manner. I sincerely hope Mrs. Clinton reads your words and accepts them.
Matt (Cleveland)
Did you forget he disparaged her in 2016? He called her corrupt and unqualified. It was constant. At the convention he barely tried to tamp down the boos from the people who showed up for no other purpose than to show out. His supporters were even worse than he was. He finally got around to endorsing her well after numerically he could no longer win the nomination. Discounting her supporters, he said the whole thing was rigged. Hillary has a right to speak her mind. I don’t want Trump to win re-election but if he does, it won’t be because of Hillary Clinton.
abigail49 (georgia)
Mrs. Clinton obviously believes, like most of the establishment class, that Bernie Sanders A) can't win the general election, and B) is a threat to the establishment class. She could say that and nobody would be insulted. But a personal attack on Bernie is vile and says more about her than it says about Sanders. The closest Bernie ever came to a personal attack on her was to point out how much she was earning for her Wall Street speaking gigs. And this after he defended her against the Republican attack dogs about her email server use. Her current comments say more about her than about Sanders.
Valerie (California)
Dear Mrs. Clinton: you lost. Please go away. Note: your 3 million-vote lead over Trump is more a reflection of people like me seeing Trump as a horror, rather than an endorsement of your candidacy and your bank- and corporation-loving policies. For many of us, you were simply the least-worst option on November 8, 2016.
robert (florida)
Well the gloves are off and I for one really love it. She doesn't have any F's to give and she is telling the truth. If anyone thinks Bernie, who doesn't get along with anyone in Congress, will get even one small initiative passed in both the House and the Senate then they are delusional. I'm all for getting as many wonderful left policies enacted as is humanly possible but this man is NOT the person to do it.
D (Illinois)
If she cannot keep quiet, I hope the DNC can send Hilary Clinton a ticket to Antarctica, with a return date of November 4, 2020. It's harder to get an audience from there. Can she set aside her personal feelings for the good of the country?
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
I lived in a fairly rough neighborhood (in what is now the most violent city in the U.S.) We learned that beating someone is good, but if you do then you'd better make sure they can't get up again.
Stephen George (Virginia)
Hillary's pecking at Sanders is uncalled for, it's unnecessary and it's unneeded. This is awful to watch for a lifetime Denocrat. It's like a retired and aging former heavyweight champion boxer deciding to come out of retirement and fight again. It never works out. He brings nothing to the game. He can't keep up with the younger fighters. The world has moved on and all he does is embarrass himself and his fans. Somebody needs to tell Hillary the world has moved on and her relevance as an active politician is a mistake. Somewhere there must be something else for her to do. Buy a gym.
Henry (Ohio)
Hillary is secretly endorsing Bernie Sanders. She knows that if she disses any candidate, they will rise in popularity.
Eric Thoben (New York)
Though I am not Bernie Sanders fan, too old and Medicare for All won’t work, etc. Hillary needs to disappear with her millions. We have too many running splitting the party. All she is doing is splitting the further. Both parties in 2016 had lousy choices. Both need to go away.
Livonian (Los Angeles)
Whatever her emotions and motives at the time, Hillary Clinton is speaking the truth: love or hate Bernie's politics, he is not a leader. Can anyone - anyone - really imagine him acting as President of the United States, a primarily political job requiring compromise, wheeling and dealing, threatening, leading, managing, cajoling, back slapping, flattering, horse trading, promise making (and breaking), tantrum throwing, delegating to subordinates, pleading, etc., etc.? No. I love Bernie. But everything that makes him such a refreshing candidate is what would make him a terrible president unable to get a thing done. (And yes, if he gets the nomination he will get my vote.)
grj (CO)
Clinton says nobody wants Bernie. Doesn't she have it backwards? Seems nobody wants her.
Linda McKim-Bell (Portland, Oregon)
This nasty attacks by Hillary need to stop it. Her neoliberal foreign policy platform was not appealing to voters and the few crumbs she was willing to leave for the 40% of Americans that are struggling economically and her watered down college help for young people were just not enough to tip the balance. She is making a spectacle of herself. This is a selfish act. The party is moving in a leftward direction and she should get on board and support the Democratic candidate that voters will choose.
Sean (Durham)
Remember in 2008 when Hillary Clinton concocted in her political laboratory, a prototype for the existential 'Bernie Bro' - The 'OBAMA BOYS'. It was virtually the same mechanism by which she could smear an entire support group - by narrowing the focus on a handful of overly-zealous campaigners. All the while her hardcore support still engages in the same underhanded tactics that she accused both The Bernie Bros, and the Obama Boys of using. However, one shall not fail to remember, that the undercurrent of the 'Obama Boys' smear was often an EXPLICITLY RACIST TROPE.
jibaro (phoenix)
i love the clintons; they are what keeps the republican party from vanishing into oblivion. i vote republican to keep the clintons from gaining power; my guess is that there are more than few that feel that way. scary photo.
MidtownATL (Atlanta)
Hillary Clinton lost to the worst presidential candidate in American history. - A fruit fly running as a Democrat could have beaten Donald Trump. - A bag of rocks running as a Democrat could have beaten Donald Trump. - A ficus tree running as a Democrat could have beaten Donald Trump. But Hillary could not defeat Donald Trump. Sadly, that makes her the worst presidential candidate in American history. And makes Donald Trump the second worst candidate. I will never forgive Hillary Clinton for giving us Donald Trump.
Lifelong Reader (NYC)
After the Times's endorsement reality show and its failure to decide on a single candidate, I'm not in the mood for sanctimonious finger-wagging from anyone on the Editorial Board. Hillary has a right to her anger and by the time this article appeared she had already said she would endorse Bernie, which was not a surprise. But Bernie and his Bros treated her shamefully.
Brad (Oregon)
This is about Bernie, his babies and bullies taking responsibility for their significant role in putting trump into office. That's not the past, it's the present.
marawa5986 (San Diego, CA)
I, for one, am ecstatic that Hillary Clinton finally called out Bernie Sanders. And, just as an aside, why didn't you call out Bernie for HIS "campaign of destruction and disunity" in 2016? In 2016, Bernie called HRC "unqualified", "corrupt" and the illegitimate winner of the primary. Bernie allowed his minions to disrupt and try to ruin her nominating convention, while he sat by watching. Bernie admitted he knew Russia was helping him by unleashing its anti-Hillary trolls, but did and said nothing. Bernie lied to his minions, telling them he could win when he knew he could not. He even tried to bribe superdelegates, and used intimidation tactics. He refused to say whether or not he'd support Hillary for an unreasonable period of time. He's doing all the same things now. He's unfit for this office. Why? Because he's very similar to Trump - a bloviating narcissist who brags about never compromising. Unfortunately, his "no compromise" stance has hurt millions of vulnerable people. And, just for the record, no, I don't like Bernie for all of the above reasons and more.
james mccarthy (bronx)
HRC should be in jail with DWS for rigging the Democrat Party Nomination and allowing Trump to ascend to the Presidency. It was clear Americans wanted a candidate outside the " mainstream " all the do over candidates Bush Romney and Clinton got shellacked by the outsiders and Bernie would have won had the process not been rigged by The Clintons
Marjorie (Charlottesville, VA)
Well-stated article, to the point without being hostile. HRC, go home, be quiet.
Mick (los angeles)
Thank you Mara for writing this piece. The unbelievable hypocrisy and egoism of clinton to pile onto the Bernie bashing is in such poor judgement and as you clearly stated, is extremely detrimental to beating Trump. It kinda shows that she's more interested in a 'told you so' moment if Trump wins reeclection.
John D (San Diego)
Sympathies, Mara. Someone has expressed an opinion. This "democracy" thing is frustrating.
Cal (Berkeley)
Mara, don't you get it? Hillary wants the Democratic party to draft HER as their nominee.
Mathew D Goodrich (Portland Oregon)
It is shame Bernie dose not have the class to bow out of this Election cycle and let a new class of candidates run. Bernie may well be responsible for yet another women being kept from out of the White House. His supporters are cult like fanatics that will do anything to win, they have already started their smear campaigns and lies, just like they did in the last election. Bernie Sanders is not fit physically or morally to lead our country.
RF1965 (Potomac, MD)
I am so disappointed in this ridiculous screed. - You are quoting third-hand, with no context (do you have any idea what question she was asked?) - You are quoting her from a documentary that was made...not yesterday. But yesterday she did issue a statement: "The number one priority for our country and world is retiring Trump, and, as I always have, I will do whatever I can to support our nominee." - If the timing wasn't "in the middle of a presidential campaign," (when are we not?) you'd vilify her for speaking "long after the campaign has ended" - To say that Sanders campaigned vigorously for Hillary is beyond laughable. He undermined her long after he'd already lost. - Finally, the remark likely would have received little coverage--except you put it on the NYT front page, of course without context. Well done. I could go on, but why bother. You just demonstrated once again the insane bias of the media against Hillary--especially when she speaks the truth.
Massimo (New York)
This is Hillary Clinton, a vicious politician who would do anything to trash the person since she can't attack Bernie's policies. She did the same back in 2008 with Obama. Now before Iowa she is stabbing Bernie on his back, suggesting she won't support Bernie if he will win the primary. Probably this is the best endorsement Bernie got so far.
Nostradamus Said So (Midwest)
Hillary you didn't win. You are beginning to sound & act like trump. Get over 2016 & move on with your life. You wouldn't be elected if you ran again. You lost because people thought trump was the lesser of two evils. Wasn't true but that is the reason so many voters give for voting for trump.
Keeping it real (Cohasset, MA)
Hillary Clinton clearly has something wrong with her -- in a mental health kind of way -- as we suspected all along, even those of us who supported her in 2016 and previously. It was evident when she referred to Trump supporters as "deplorables" that there is a total disconnect from reality that is symptomatic of her mental illness. Her inane comment recently about Tulsi Gabbard likewise was something that only a person with mental health issues would utter. Watching her on Steven Colbert a few months ago with Chelsea was painful -- there was something off. It's one thing to speak your mind, but Hillary's recent rants and personal attacks are something that Trump would say -- and we know he clearly has mental health issues. Mrs. Clinton may have established an enduring legacy as a First Lady, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and the first female presidential candidate, but let's face it: What she is right now is nothing more than a bitter, crazy, old woman who is engaging in a version of the spoiled child on the playground who takes his ball home if he can't win. If Mrs. Clinton truly cared about the country, she would be doing everything she can to defeat Trump. Instead, her Narcissism, which is exceeded only by Trump (and yes, her husband) these days, is evident for all to see.
Jeff (California)
Ms. Gay is wrong. Bernie Sanders, in his camelian act of being a "Democrat" is a threat to putting a Democrat in the White House. I'm glad that Hillary Clinton is attempting to educate the Democratic rank and file that Bernie's action as an election year "democrat" may well, just like 4 years ago, put Trump in the White House for anouther 4 years. m Research Bernie Sanders. You will find as I did that he is all talk and no results. Even his Presidential Election web page of 4 years ago was lacking any accomplishments in his many decades of being an elected official. Well, he did claim to have won all his elections by the skin of his teeth.
BabsWC (West Chester, PA)
HRC needs to MOVEON.ORG - She had her chance, didn't campaign in states that she got beat in, also Russian hacking and Facebook's looking the other way hurt her badly. But 2020 is a new ballgame, and she needs to just shut up and go about her life! She's only hurting her "legacy" by trashing ANY OF THE DEM CANDIDATES! There's enough bashing among Dems as it is, we don't need more from a NON-CANDIDATE!
Roy P (California)
Uh, yeah... Trump is not Hilary's opponent.... anyone who stands in her way is her opponent. Democrat, Republican, anyone. Sanders delayed his support in 2016 and Hillary believes this cost her as much as anything Trump did. Logic won't work on her.
Dawn (Huntington,NY)
Ms. Gay You are a national treasure, please don't participate in silencing women.
stuart (glen arbor, mi)
This is why those voting for Clinton in 2016 while holding their nose were holding their nose.
John (Eugene, OR)
Without support from Wasserman -Schwartz who as DNC chairperson was supposed to be neutral and being fed questions ahead of primary debates by Donna Brazille , Hillary might well have lost to Bernie in 2016 .Just go away, Mrs. Clinton.
Carla (NE Ohio)
Mara Gay, I saw parts of the Times editorial board video interview of Bernie Sanders. You seemed to be the only member of the board who was able to treat Bernie fairly. Thank you.
Jane Klein (Berwyn, PA)
Her hubris may deprive Dems of a win -- for the second time.
Matt Goldberg (Oakland, California)
I'd be interested to learn how often Ms. Gay has written glowingly about and in support of Biden's rivals trying to take him down.
MValentine (Oakland, CA)
“Gracious “ is just not in Mrs. Clinton’s DNA. This whole episode is nothing more than a shameless bid by HRC to get maximum attention for her Hulu documentary. In her own special way she’s as much a shameless narcissist as the monster in the White House. Decency and facts have no meaning for her anymore, only her festering resentment. Bless her heart, it’s such a pity.
Sean (Durham)
Does anyone remember that in 2008 Hillary Clinton asserted the following about her political rival, Barack Obama: “His roots to basic American values and culture are at best limited. I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and in his values ... Every speech should contain the line you were born in the middle of America to the middle class in the middle of the last century ... Let’s explicitly own ‘American’ in our programs, the speeches and the values. He doesn’t.“ She was deliberately playing up the racist notion that he wasn't born in America and is a 'secret Muslim'? She was effectively 'other-ing' Obama throughout that campaign cycle. And then 2016 rolls around and she wraps herself in an Obama flag promising to maintain and build upon his legacy? Then the existential 'Bernie-bro' came along, a prototype of precisely the same bad-faith smear she employed against Obama support - the 'Obama Boys'.
John Kell (Victoria)
If this cat fight is any indication, I suspect the Democrats will be in such disarray after their convention that it will embolden President Trump to throw Mike Pence under the bus, and make Donald Trump Junior his running mate. You read it here first: "Trump & Trump Jr in 2020".
Frau Greta (Somewhere In NJ)
So many immature people running for president. Are there ANY adults who want to run? Sniping, name calling, accusations, childish insults. Trump has not only lured racists out from under the rocks, he's brought out the worst in everyone else. Mrs. Clinton, just go away. You had your time, we thank you for your many years of service, but it's time to go. Take the lead from your husband.
Chris (NY)
Bernie is a bit of a leftist Trump, a sort of mirror image. I do not trust him.
Kyle (Denver)
Look to the examples set by John Kerry, Al Gore, and Barack Obama. Have any of them criticized current candidates for the Democratic nomination? Of course not. Hillary's behavior was shameful and self-serving. She owes Bernie and Democrats an apology, and she'd be wise to keep her mouth shut going forward, as she clearly doesn't have enough sense to think before she speaks.
Deb (Blue Ridge Mtns.)
Yes HRC. You wuz robbed. We know. But you're not the only one who was robbed. Our country/democracy was stolen and we really want it back. Old saying, but good advice: Lead, follow or get out of the way. If the first and second are not an option, please go with three.
Vicki From Vermont (Vermont)
Mrs. Clinton is a bitter old lady, who cannot stand that the party is moving on without her in a much more viable and energetic way. Bernie was a legitimate candidate in 2016 and is now in 2020, with a heck of a lot less baggage than Mrs. Clinton dragged around then or now. I feel sorry for her. She has no vibrancy and no one wants her involvement in their campaign. It almost feels like she would rather have President Trump reelected than an ethical consistent Bernie Sanders. Shame on you Mrs. Clinton.
Daisuke Daisn (San Diego)
I believe that Clinton's pathetic attempt to grab attention will only enhance Bernie's appeal. I would love to see a Sanders-Warren ticket. I am ashamed to say that I voted for HRC in two primaries and the 2016 election because I wanted to see a woman POTUS. Now, I am for the most progressive candidate out there regardless of gender. Clinton, who still had my sympathy before this contemptible conduct, has become a laughing stock, a stalking horse for the so-called New Democrats, like her husband Bill and his clone Obama, who populated his administration with Clinton retreads because he was so clearly not up to the job of running the country. Her politics no longer warrant discussion. I wish she would just fade away and stop embarrassing herself and all those fools like me who gave her a seat at the table.
JLO (Austin Texas)
The only person on the planet who is not over Hillary at this point is Hillary.
SchnauzerMom (Raleigh, NC)
Someone needs to muzzle her so the Democrats stand a chance of beating Trump. She was so poisonous before that people stayed home, and she lost the election. This independent voter, long a Democrat, held my nose and voted for her as a vote against Trump. Hillary needs to shut up and disappear for the good of the country.
whaddoino (Kafka Land)
I believe it was Gail Collins who described John McCain after his 2008 loss to Obama as a "walking snit." Hillary Clinton is now the undisputed holder of that same title.
Infinite observer (Tennessee)
Hillary Clinton needs to ride off into the political sunset. Period!
Tim Moerman (Ottawa)
Jeez Louise. I never would have thought I'd agree with the MAGA hatters but.... can somebody lock her up?
Tom Carney (Manhattan Beach California)
So, Hillary, please just shut your mouth. I already voted for u when you managed to push Bernie out of the race you lost to the admittedly corrupt manipulation of Criminal trump. I am og the opinion that what lost that race was your halfway solutions. You could not attract those voters of Bernie’s who were All In. So we The People, got Slimed by trump. Possibly, a message we needed! Now, we have several Sister and Brother candidates who are All In! We need you and your tiered and tried friends to be quiet and let the future of the United States unfold. We do need your trust and faith that these sister and brothers have a clear vision of the way ahead. The times have seriously evolved. Halfway is a dead end as the last few elections have revealed. Help us with your vote and $ but we do not need your advice.
Bill (Vassiliou)
Clinton sounds like Trump. Gay is right that the trump ad people will get much mileage out of this.
Casey (portland)
are we sure Hillary hasn't been compromised by the Russians?
Dock (San Francisco)
Yes Trump is the opponent. Bernie is only interested in Bernie. He doesn't really care about the Democrats or beating Trump. Bernie is a loser in any national election. And Bernie is helping Trump by trashing and lying about other Democratic candidates, displaying his lack on integrity and lack of interest in helping whoever wins to beat Trump. He helped Trump to win in 2016 and now Bernie's doing it all over again.
Bob Laughlin (Denver)
I really wish we could see the last of both Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Gail Payne (Centerport, NY)
"By hook, but more by crook", you beat Sanders, is what you should have titled the article!
Doug (Oregon Coast)
I'll vote for whomever get the nomination. Hillary should chill.
Will (Tarrytown)
Once a Clinton, always a Clinton? Self serving, me-first has always been their MO.
EB (Seattle)
Go away Hillary. You already botched one election and gave us Trump. At best, trashing Sanders makes you sound petty. At worst, it makes you look you're enabling Trump for another term. Taissez vous!
Mur (USA)
very sad, she is supposed to be an intelligent person but what she shows is only an arrogant and vindictive brat. Like Trump, one time her friend.

What an awful title...! No accident here.

I read yesterday’s article on the present HRC attack on Sanders as well as today and the one in The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/21/hillary-clinton-bernie-sanders-attacks-netflix Why? I asked myself. And why now? And what is worse, Hillary Clinton is calling Sander’s people ‘deplorables.’ She just is using other words.
Diane (Arlington Heights)
And now she's going after Tulsi Gabbard. What is her problem?
Alex (New York)
"The Democrats' last standard-bearer" hahahahahahahahahahahaha It's honestly depressing how out of touch the New York Times has become. Between this, the "endorsement", and that "there is no class war" column, I cannot justify my subscription anymore.
BI (Denver)
Judging from the tone of a number of comments, perhaps HRC's bitter diatribe will act as a contrarian indicator and galvanize support for Bernie, who seems to be gaining momentum at just the right time. Please leave your entitled arrogance at the door because 2016 is so 2016...
Stephen George (Virginia)
What Hilklary is really saying to the Democrats is "Pick me!"
Northway (California)
Thanks, Hillary! Another notch in Trump's belt!
JMC (Lost and confused)
Why is the New York Times even giving Clinton and her whining a platform? Ms. Clinton is a loser blaming everyone except her entitled self. Most importantly Ms. Clinton is Irrelevant. Totally irrelevant. So why is the New York Times reviving this political zombie? Oh right, the NYT's overriding policy of 'Never Bernie'. Keep it up NYT and you will soon be as irrelevant as Ms. Clinton. I never like Tulsi Gabbard but my heart gladdened with the news she was suing Clinton for defamation. Hopefully it will start a trend and give Ms. Clinton something to focus on that will be less destructive to our country than the damage she already caused and seems to want to continue.
Voltaire (Montréal)
American politics amaze me ! Democrats are addicted to shooting themselves in the foot, reloading and shooting themselves in the other foot....
JLO (Austin Texas)
And we complain about Trump being a whining narcissist with a pathological sense of victimhood.

Please, Hillary, keep talking. You are the kiss of death for Democratic hope.

Is Hillary a campaign weapon being utilized by Trump?!
PJT (Rhode Island)
Truth is nobody likes her. Especially now after her catty, self-absorbed and bitter remarks about Bernie. Get a life, Hilary! Move on and be the better person you might still be capable of being. And stop projecting your own insecurities and self image on others.
Dominick Eustace (London)
Thank you Mara Gay.
AMR (Chicago)
The author of this op-ed is only adding to the problem by stoking Hilary hatred when Hilary isn't currently running. As for Clinton's comments about Gabbard, I would say they were more than warranted. Gabbard openly supports Modi, a man who is violently targeting Muslims in Kashmir. Gabbard is also running to be a Fox pundit. Why drag that into this pointless article?

Look the Dems have decided they want Biden. Regardless of what the people want. Hillary is a soldier in everyone else's destruction. It is clear as day. Even Trump knows it. The Dems are the masters of manipulating the primaries away from the peoples choice.
jonr (Brooklyn)
I agree that Hillary probably should have kept her opinion to herself however it also seems possible that Sanders' holier than thou self righteousness would turn his fellow Senators off in a body that was designed to effect compromise. It may be overboard to compare Mr. Sanders to Trump but, given the fanaticism of his followers, I find any candidate that inspires a cult following to be off putting.
SS (San Francisco. CA)
All she's done is awaken and re-fuel the trauma of 2016, the antipathy and the name-calling. There were other ways she could have made the point that the 2020 candidate must have certain qualities (with the silent implication Bernie doesn't have them). But I'm so disappointed in her for saying this at this time and in this way. My friends who supported her and raging again about 2016. Just like trump, they are refusing to let it go.
EmilyH (Milwaukee)
@SS She's done tip-toeing around her words, because she has never been able to avoid a pile-on. And good for her. She spoke out honestly in a documentary - she didn't make a speech. Get new friends.
Pam (Santa Rosa, CA)
Mrs. Clinton should speak out about Bernie. She should tell us her experiences with him and keep us informed as we decide among these candidates. Why do we continue to vilify her? A margin of 3 million popular votes in 2016! A campaign that was tilted toward Trump by Russian interference and social media misinformation. Comey announcing new emails that later amounted to nothing a week before the election. She didn't let Trump become President. She was robbed. Let her talk!!
Avi Black (California)
Perhaps we're misreading Ms. Clinton's statement. Perhaps she is suggesting she would actually be supporting Mr. Sanders' campaign by not publicly endorsing him. Perhaps, but probably not. Sour grapes, sour grapes. We're all past sixth grade -- well, maybe not quite all of us...
EmilyH (Milwaukee)
@Avi Black She didn't "make a statement". She was quoted from a documentary.
frank (los angeles)
i am watching as once again the democrats try to prove that they can't win an election while representing the majority of the country and Mrs Clinton's comments will only help in securing Trumps re-election.
Tom (Winston Salem, NC)
Please. Didn't we tire of the Clinton's years ago? Yes, I held my nose and voted for her in 2016, but sincerely wish she and Bill would simply go away.
Brian Johns (Melbourne Australia)
Thank you for this excellent and most apropos article.
uncleg (denver co)
I long ago concluded that the only core commitment that Hillary Clinton has is the notion that she should be president. She will sacrifice any other person or principle as it best serves that single commitment.
Lola (New York City)
It's time to say goodbye to the Clinton machine. Way back in 2008, she was the anointed candidate and confidently announced on the "Today" show that she would tie up the nomination by Super Tuesday. That didn't happen. In 2016, once again it was "Hillary's turn". She ran a totally undisciplined campaign and lost to a political novice. There's no reason to listen to her about presidential politics concerning anyone.
-brian (St. Paul)
These Hillary-Bros are out of control; they seriously risk tearing the party apart. Sanders is now leading with 27% nationally, and it's time for Democrats to rally behind the front-runner. Sanders 2020
Tim Fredrick (Queens, NY)
It's interesting that people are giving Clinton grief about disrupting party unity when the 2016 convention was filled with Bernie Sanders supporters who did anything but support party unity. Sanders's delayed and lukewarm support of Clinton led to such lack of support. It's rich that now Sanders supporters are lecturing Clinton on party unity--a party Sanders doesn't even belong to and has disparaged on multiple occasions now and in the past.
momma4cubs (Minnesota)
Honestly, can we jsut let Hilary be a regular citizen? Do we need to focus on her when there are other far more important things going on. In fact, she was speaking some turth about his effectiveness as a legislator and how other members of the Senate do not like to work with him. Are we not allowed to bring up facts and speak our minds? So tired of this type of talk. And BTW, he is the one very controversial candidate the Dems have in terms of getting any Republicans to switch sides. While I am a Dem, I work and live near many folks who have told me repeatedly that if my party chooses any but Bernie they would vote Blue to remove Trump, but that he scares them enough to vote Red. Ugh liberals can we not try to be likable and reasonable?
Viv (.)
@momma4cubs Nobody is stalking her at her home, asking for her opinion on things. She is the one doing media tours, asking people to buy her books, come to her shows, and watch her documentary. If you read the Hollywood Reporter article about her, you will find out that she was the one who approached a filmmaker to make a documentary about her life because she wanted to monetize some un-aired footage from her political career. No one approached her saying that she should agree to this. Howard Stern didn't bang on her door to do his radio show, either.
cwells9 (Brooklyn, NY)
@momma4cubs the reverse is also true. I wouldn't have thought it at the time, but in retrospect the overwhelming support that Bernie had in places like Wisconsin and Michigan showed that he had support that didn't translate to votes for Hillary: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/22/upshot/polls-bernie-sanders-chances.html http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/08/will-the-greens-and-libertarians-affect-the-2020-election.html "4.5 percent of Bernie Sanders primary voters pulled the lever for Stein and another 3.2 percent went for Johnson in November 2016 (perhaps more to the point, 12 percent of them voted for Trump, but that’s a different story)."
Tim Fredrick (Queens, NY)
@Viv I mean, you realize that Bernie Sanders is a multimillionaire based on book sales, right? He didn't make all that money being a revolutionary; he made it engaging in a capitalist venture.
Eric (Buffalo)
The headline's and the author's repeated use of "Mrs." is a sexist insult. She is Secretary Clinton; it's a title that stays.
Jim (Albany)
@Eric She hasn't been secretary since 2013; and APPOINTED position. And, it is SENATOR Sanders, an ELECTED position. Maybe a little humility would've made the crucial difference in 2016
Barbara (SC)
I supported Ms. Clinton in 2016, but I was ashamed of her bashing of Mr. Sanders. This is no time for any Democrat, especially a prominent one, to take a chance on dividing the party. There was no upside for Democrats when she denigrated Sanders. I expect better of her.
Gian Piero Messi (Westchester County, NY)
It appears that Bernie sent out his customary BAT-SIGNAL and as always, the Bros have reacted and are actively and massively responding and attacking the "enemy." It gets tiresome to see this recurring pattern among Bernie's followers.
Jim (Albany)
@Gian Piero Unlike the mainstream DNC and RNC, some people think independently and form their own conclusions. It gets tiresome to see this recurring pattern among Hillary's and Trump's followers.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
@Jim Trump supporters are hardly mainstream Republicans.
Fellow Elite Runner (Boulder, CO)
You cannot be serious. After the "bros" failed to unite the party in 2016 after Clinton crushed Sanders in the Democratic Primary, you have the gall to suggest that she is responsible for a party division now. Sanders supporters helped usher Trump into office, and now they want to turn around and whine that Clinton is causing the party to rupture? Nice try. Some of us remember who has been, and is, actually dividing the party, and it is not Hillary Clinton.
ebmem (Memphis, TN)
@Fellow Elite Runner Hillary did not crush Sanders in the Democrat primaries. She was ahead only because she owned all of the superdelegates.. Because she owned all of the superdelegates, no Democrat ran against her for more than a couple of weeks.
Veritas (Brooklyn)
Well, sometimes the truth hurts. She makes a good point. What has Bernie accomplished in 13 years in the Senate? And maybe no one does like him.
Dobbys sock (Ca.)
@Veritas What has Bern accomplished: Wrote 'n passed an $11billion HC Clinics Bill, serving an estimated 30 million citizens in 11000 rural and urban locals, ea. yr. Negotiated the $5 billion bipartisan Landmark Veterans Bill of '14. Recently helped workers in the Fight for $15 win a doubling of wages. 350,000 Amazon workers, 60,000 Disney workers, 20,000 Wholefoods workers and more. Restored $320 million in pension benefits to 130,000 IBM workers. Passage of the first and only audit of the Federal Reserve in '10. Passage of $3.2 billion Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy grants. Stopping bailed-out banks from replacing US workers with low wage guest workers. Stopping the Postal Service from closing up to 15000 post offices and over 100 mail processing plants, ending Saturday mail and slashing over 100,000 jobs. Passage of the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act. Raising wages of Federal contractors to a min. of $10.10 hr. or more. Created the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve. Passed the bipartisan War Powers Act to stop the Yemen war funding. The first time in 45yrs. To name but a few. Would you like me to continue? Research Bernie, The Amendment King. He passed more amendments under heavily partisan Republican controlled gov. than any other congresswo/man. Here is a good story, and why you often don't hear or read about Bern and his bills... https://youtu.be/C08mO4BxRBs?t=10m20s Amazing how willfully ignorant people are/act. Be better...
Jim (Albany)
@Veritas what has Hillary Clinton accomplished, other than looking busy with activities, pretending they are accomplishments.
James (RI)
I don't think Mrs. Clinton ever got over her primary loss to Obama and then to see it almost happen again in 2016 by Sanders was like Déjà all over again. She's not thinking clearly or acting like the states person and parry elder she is.Of course the elephant in the room is that yes, had the election had not been meddled with she would be president, but had her allies in the dnc not meddled with the primary Sanders may well have won the nomination and defeated Trump.
LS (FL)
I looked up the dates. Bernie didn't concede the election until July 12, 2016, barely 2 weeks before the convention. The NY Times piece by Yamiche Alcindor, published a full month earlier on June 12, is titled "Bernie Sanders Refuses to Concede Election to Hillary Clinton" even though he had been statistically eliminated 2 weeks earlier. He vowed to take the fight to the convention floor because he claimed he would be the stronger candidate against Trump. May I just add that the Editorial Board, in their endorsement of two presidential candidates a few days ago, described the two factions of the Democratic party as the "radical" and "realist" wings. Forget that the opinion columnists who weren't a part of that decision are already back to the usual pejorative terminology -- moderates, centrists, etc. I don't mind being called a realist if the opposite involves electing a candidate who'll be 80 yrs. old during his first year in office yet is promising, among other goals, to remake the economic system. Who is left to be his running mate, now that his detestable Bros are already at work in discrediting Elizabeth Warren?
cwells9 (Brooklyn, NY)
@LS I would also look up when Hillary conceded the election in 2008. Hillary Clinton did not concede the primary election in 2008 until after all states had voted, despite having already been "statistically eliminated", as you put it. I say this as someone who very much supported Clinton's candidacy in 2016, and who currently supports Warren. We need to come together - that is the single most important thing that can happen once a candidate wins the nomination this time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries "On June 3, the day of the final primaries in South Dakota and Montana, Obama rolled out about sixty superdelegate endorsements. Those endorsements, together with the pledged delegates awarded in the final primaries, put him well over the "magic number" of 2,117 delegate votes necessary for a majority at the Democratic National Convention. By early in the evening, all major news organizations had announced that Obama had clinched the Democratic nomination, and Obama claimed the status of presumptive nominee in a speech in St. Paul, Minnesota. Clinton did not concede the nomination in her election night speech, saying that she would be "making no decisions tonight". On the morning of June 5, Clinton posted on her website an open letter to her supporters, which she also sent by e-mail that day. It announced that on Saturday (June 7) Clinton would endorse Obama's candidacy.
cwells9 (Brooklyn, NY)
Amen. I also wanted to share how much I appreciated your voice in the interviews of the candidates. The questions you asked, and your overall clarity and vision were an exception on the board. Very appreciative of your presence on the board.
Ma (Atl)
I don't understand some of the comments/attacks Dems are throwing out against each other; even long term friends. But I suspect it reflects the sheer number of candidates; just like 2016 when too many Reps were looking for the candidacy. Very sad, and hope that history doesn't repeat itself where the one that wins may not be the best...
Bone Head (Ashton, MD)
I can't speak to whether other legislators like Bernie Sanders, but we do know for sure that Americans didn't like Hillary Clinton enough to turn out and vote for her. And at least at that time, Sanders was the most popular politician in the country. I'm not just saying this to be flippant. Sec'y Clinton's statement - and her actions during both her 2008 and 2016 campaigns - reflects a deeper sentiment. One that has come up in her Wall Street speeches, and one I frequently experience from her supporters as well: some people matter more than others. Some people are better than others. It's more important to be liked by Senators and wealthy donors and editorial boards than to talk to actual people. She had no one to blame for her loss in 2016 but herself.
RR (Wisconsin)
This column pretty-much says it all. Kudos to Ms Gay for writing it, and to the NY Times for publishing it.
D. Fernando (Florida)
Hillary, being the face of Democratic "Centrism", has decided to use her power to run interference on behalf of the establishment. I've no doubt that the monied class are starting to realize Bernie can actually pull it off. What he can accomplish, or merely what his continued presence in the race can do (like plant the seeds that lead to AOC and other liberal-minded individuals joining politics) worries them as much as it worries conservatives. They fear the end of their gravy train of promising some policy crumbs, meant to only as a small offering to voters, while enjoying all the benefits of Republican's monolithic march towards plutocracy. This gives me all the more reason to support Bernie. If we are to get a better future, we gotta fight for it.
Lydia Tortora (Mattituck, New York)
Mrs. Clinton's tirade against Bernie Sanders speaks more to who she is than any criticisms leveled against him. Her intentions were hardly noble. She knew that striking a candidate so close to the primaries would hurt not only Sanders but the Democratic Party. Nonetheless, that was her carefully planned and executed decision. I suspect her actions were aimed at the Democratic Party. She has long said that if the party had united behind her, she would be President. So she blames the Party. Bernie's just a side bar, an excuse to vent. Very disappointing and a slap in the face to all who had supported her.
Rodney Bent (Trumansburg NY)
Hillary Clinton's opinion of Bernie Sanders is accurate and now, before the Democratic primaries and caucuses, is the appropriate time for her to share it. Bernie is indeed a career politician with 39 years as mayor, Representative and Senator. During his fourteen years in the Senate, he sponsored only two bills that were enacted, one of which was to name the Danville, Vermont, post office after Thaddeus Stevens. (To be fair, he did co-sponsor other bills that were enacted.) His simplistic bromides are no substitute for serious attention to the real problems facing Americans.
Carl Yaffe (Rockville, Maryland)
@Rodney Bent Do you really think "Nobody likes him" is accurate and appropriate, or is it just the juvenile, spiteful taunt it sounds like?
Patrick (Chicago)
Amen. This was unnecessary, petty, and puts our country in danger. And I voted for Secretary Clinton, not Bernie.
FNL (Philadelphia)
Mrs. Clinton appears to be harboring the delusion that a divided party will look to her as a last hope candidate. Her singleminded pursuit of the Presidency for herself at all costs is what got Donald Trump elected in the first place. One can only hope that Democrats have learned not to listen to her.
Susan. Massachusetts (Mass)
Thank you for an honest, and obvious take on HILLARY Clinton’s anger that still permeates the media in all forms. How sad she can’t ever, ever let go of her loss and be a constructive member of her party. She is also saying these things in a documentary which she is now desperately trying to publicize. Everything she does or says is always, always, about Hillary or Bill. They can’t stand being out of the limelight, so they both are guilty of their never-ending need for attention and staying relevant. Hence, she has gotten this with her remark about Sanders. What will be next?
Baron (Philly)
Last I checked, the first votes haven't been cast. She wouldn't be much of a leader if she didn't point out what a flawed and imminently beatable candidate Mr. Sanders would be. If he was such a great choice, she wouldn't have beaten him by over three million votes in the primaries, with or without the "help" of the Democratic party that she and Bill saved from bankruptcy.
A.G. (St Louis, MO)
I am profoundly disappointed in Mrs. Clinton for trashing Bernie Sanders. No one is perfect. He may not have helped her enough to win the presidency; he may have been lukewarm. Nevertheless, if she had picked Bernie as her running mate, she would have captured another couple of million more votes and she would be the president now. I'm indeed angry at her still for letting Donald Trump be our president.
Mark Bantz (Italy)
@A.G. That was Bernie’s job,getting Trump elected!
Nick (Pittsburgh)
@A.G. He campaigned more for her in the primary than she did for Obama in 2008, so I'd say he certainly helped her "win" the presidency
David Rose (Hebron, CT)
@A.G. "No one is perfect. He may not have helped her enough to win the presidency; " No, that's not the point. It was his dog-in-the-manger sulks that gave us Trump. And I find it hard to forgive him that. Bernie is Bernie First, not America First.
Mel (NY)
She really has shown her character. On the first day of an impeachment trial, in the middle of a primary she unleashes this grudge? Does she not realize how much privilege she has? Why can't she go on with enjoying her life without having to seek revenge? Sanders stumped hard for Clinton speaking at 39 rallies on her behalf. Her grudge is the stuff of entitlement gone whack. I can't help but think of sports-- when one team loses it shakes the opponents hand and they movs on. Bernie has done this. It's Clinton-- the winner who cannot let it rest.
Karen (California)
@Mel She didn't have control over the timing of the documentary on her that is coming out. The interview was in relation to that documentary. Sanders didn't "stump hard" for her. He took several months off to promote his book, and when he did rally "for" her, he always promoted his own "revolution" and continued his rants against corporate Democrats -- having labeled her a corporate Democrat. He told his supporters he couldn't tell them who to vote for and he hoped they wouldn't listen to them if he tried to. It was a mixed message and everyone knew it.
Mel (NY)
@Karen His book didn't come out until the end of November. As for the things you say he said-- he absolutely did not say those things. He was very clear that Trump was the threat and that his supporters needed to support Clinton and most did. Whatever he said during the campaign was about their differences in issues and funding. All legit differences to talk about in a primary. Clinton's loss is her reposnsbility. No one elses.
H.K (California)
@Karen 'Asked by The Reporter recently if that assessment still held, she replied, “Yes, it does.”' Its not clear how recent "recently" is, but the timing of her remarks can't be disputed. Even if not related to the impeachment trial, it is still bang in the middle of a "vigorous primary season".
brians3 (Oak Park)
Absolutely on target, Ms. Gay. Hillary has nurtured grudges for decades, going all the way back to Arkansas no doubt. It's not surprising at all that she come out once again, with venom and cynicism about the upcoming election, aiming her shots at Bernie Sanders primarily. After all, wasn't she actually elected? Despite running a poor campaign (Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin) and who along with the DNC had their "history" with Bernie in 2016. It should be everyone's wish that Hillary just simply pack it in and just go away. Her kind of leadership is not in demand anymore. In fact, I don't think it ever was.
Bill Brown (California)
@brians3 The main beneficiary of HRC statement will be Biden heading into the Iowa primaries. Good. Bernie can't win. Moderates are sensing a favorable shift towards reality. Last November's election results are in. You have to be blind to not be able to read these tea leaves. Voters especially swing state voters are rejecting Trumpism but endorsing centrists. The Democrats who won in red & purple states ran as moderates. We need to be realistic and abandon progressive initiatives they will lose us votes. There's no progressive majority in the U.S. & never will be. The numbers are simply not there. There certainly is no progressive Electoral College coalition in the U.S. that could get to the needed 270 votes. This point can't be emphasized enough: almost every progressive candidate in whom Dems invested tremendous time, money, & emotional energy in 2018— Beto O’Rourke in Texas, Andrew Gillum in Florida, Stacey Abrams in Georgia— lost. Almost every significant progressive initiative on the ballot in this country was voted down. If this election is about kitchen table issues: jobs & affordable education there's no way we lose. If it's about Medicare for All, reparations & more illegal immigration there's no way we win. We can win with or without progressives. We can't win without swing & centrists voters. The left will fume and gnash their teeth but a moderate candidate gives us the best chance. Biden can win in 2020. That's all that matters. The rest is noise.
Chris (Chicago)
@Bill Brown , I don't know what is up with you moderates and ignoring data in favor of punditry. The facts remain clear that Bernie is more electable than every candidate except maybe Biden. He has the best head-to-head polls against Trump, has more support among independents than any other candidate, has broad support in the midwest, and has the most grassroots support. Progressive initiatives are very popular according to national polling, from Medicare-for-all to raising the minimum wage. These are the facts. It's fine that you're a moderate and it's fine that you want to vote for a moderate, but don't pretend that the facts back you up on electability. They don't.
Winston (NYC)
@Bill Brown Swing voters aren't simply "centrists" (i.e. Conservatives) who can't make up their minds--in general they tend to hold heterodox political views that cannot be simply reduced to a single point on left-right spectrum. And they are not monolithic--they are divided between multiple distinct groups which are politically activated or deactivated at different times. There was a VERY large contingent of swing voters last election cycle--independents, NOT Democrats--who literally said that they would've voted for Bernie but instead voted for Trump. These people, who didn't owe any Democrat their vote and who are not "progressive" in any general sense, would've supported the most progressive candidate in the race specifically because of kitchen table issues (AND HEALTHCARE IS A KITCHEN TABLE ISSUE). Many of these people will vote for Bernie in open primary states and many more will vote for Bernie in the general. Many of these people will not vote for Biden. Enough with the "noise."
Joan (Brooklyn)
Hillary Clinton's motives are clear. She wants to undermine Bernie Sanders and fuel divisiveness among Democrats. It's hard to understand the narcissistic derangement that motivates her. In this light, it seems her failed bids for the presidency were less about the well-being of the country, and more about her own desire for power.
Claire (Texas)
@Joan How is Hillary fueling divisiveness among Democrats?Sanders is not a Democrat. He is not a Democratic Socialist. He is not a Socialist Democrat. He is a Socialist that is running for President in the Democratic Party. Therefore, Hillary can say whatever she pleases about him. Sanders did when he ran against her.
Lester Khan (New York)
@Joan Narcissism has always permeated our elections and sowed misinformation, back-stabbing, lies and a subtly complicit media factory that puts it all on steroids - fortunately, there is Sanders.
Ivan (Portland, OR)
@Joan HRC is a sorely needed reminder that a centrist like her which are Biden, Warren, Klobuchar, and Buttigieg are the WINNING strategy to take back the White House. She is back to remind us of this. Only by taking money from Wall Street and other special interest we can win the White House. It is a winning strategy. Unlike Bernie Sanders and its empty town halls from what I read here in the NYT. She is here to unify the wealthy donor class against the people that scorned her. The American Voter.
Alexander Scala (Kingston, Ontario)
The standard Clintonite narrative is that Sanders helped to cost Clinton the election by failing to go away even when it was clear that he wasn't going to win the nomination. There's another way of looking at the matter: if Sanders hadn't contested Clinton's coronation, Trump would have gotten all of the headlines, rather than just most of them.
alb (Springboro Ohio)
Hillary Clinton no longer needs to be told what to do by any employee of the NYT, she is a private citizen.
Jim (Albany)
@alb Then she didn't have to agree to the interview.
Alan (Eisman)
Hillary's stupidity in making the "Nobody likes him" when over 20% of Democrats love him is as tone deaf and guilty of political malpractice as when she referred to Trump supporters as a basket of deplorables. It really is time for the Clintons to go home.
Chris L. (Laguna Beach)
I agree with so many of her points...but not the timing. Its her right to speak out anytime she wants, but doing it now only aggravates the groups who've already set up camp with those who are already pro or con Bernie. The message was upstaged by the messenger.
JBG (Seattle)
It is fascinating that Hillary remains a wildly divisive character, even within the liberal / left wing of the nation. It is time for Hillary and Bill to exit the limelight, and confine their political activities to extracting great awful gouts of cash from the fatcat's wallets.
Carl (KS)
Two thoughts: (1) It's not unreasonable for the #NeverHillary liberals to expect some kind of "Never Bernie" reaction in 2020. (2) The truth hurts.
Cassandra (Hades)
"If I can't have the presidency, no one can!" -Hillary Clinton
Christopher Slevin (Michigan USA)
Ms Clinton your legacy will not be that you beat Mr Sanders in 2016. Rather it will be that you gave the nation Donald Trump. You will never be forgiven for that. Your back room dealing and calling in expensive favors got you the Democratic nomination. The American electorate could not stomach your deceit, greed, lust for power that lgave us the present dangerous occupant in the Whitehouse. You will the nation a great favor if you go hide and stay out of the limelight. You cast a very dark shadow
RM (N.Y.)
If Sanders had any chutzpa, he'd respond to Hillary’s inane remarks by pointing out that it’s Hillary who no one likes (save for her willfully-ignorant but loyal cult following) and in fact, is the one who achieved virtually nothing as carpetbagger Sen from NY; that as Sec of State she was, contrary to the never-ending but deft public relations campaign, a complete and utter disaster, except, of course, for her success at accumulating dubious contributions from foreign donors and funneling it over to the Clinton Foundation. Tulsi Gabbard was dead-on when she stated that HC “personifies the rot that has sickened the Democratic party.” As a life-long registered Democrat who doesn’t just blindly follow the herd and can think critically, I can say, truer words were never spoken. Spin aside, HC (and hubby Bill) are, without a doubt, among the most corrupt politicians to ever come down the pike. Aside from that, she’s a loser. A two-time loser, and a sore loser to boot. In business, you stay away from sore losers; they are considered a pariah. It's pathetic that she continues perpetuating the narrative that she lost the election due to practically everything under the sun when, in fact, she was a lousy, smug, narcissistic, divisive, not to mention, absolutely incompetent, candidate (with the hugely inflated creds). With the Clintons, its always been and always will be a sordid collection of hubris-filled half-truths, obfuscation and toxic vainglorious mythologizing.
irene (fairbanks)
@RM Just as with Warren's hoped-for post debate 'gotcha' moment, Bernie refused to play. When asked by a reporter, he had such a great response : "On a good day, my wife likes me". And then pivoted immediately to the task at hand, the impeachment trial. That's why people 'like' him. Authenticity is something you can't fake, although Heaven knows Hillary tried to.
Jeff Denenberg (Plover, WI)
Well said. It appears she and her organization have kidnapped the DNC. After Bernie was knee capped in 2016 I became an independent. Her bitterness can be as toxic as a Trump rally
John (Cranbury)
What a disgusting diatribe by Hillary Clinton. I cannot believe she was our nominee the last time around. She spawns dissension rather than unity. It's no wonder she lost!
Michael (Lawrence, MA)
Hilary has always been a careerist and opportunist. This is further proof of that. M
Alexander Scala (Kingston, Ontario)
Could it be that our Hillary is getting ready to toss her brave little bonnet into the ring? Should we be bracing ourselves for Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster II?
Ted (New England)
Hillary, you are channeling your inner Donald! Cut it out!
Chris (Berlin)
I thought feminism was, in part, about women bringing humanitarian values into public life. Instead, some are aping the worst traits of the worst kinds of men. Women like Hillary keep demonstrating that they are just as greedy and murderous as men when they compete for leadership. E very time she opens her mouth it hurts the cause of women. “Nobody likes him" Sounds like something a high school girl would say, A jealous, petty, vindictive, entitled, spoiled, clueless high school girl. Nobody likes him because he refuses to tow the corrupt party line, there fixed it for you Hillary. Most sane Americans are beyond sick of this toxic mess of a human being. Two time sore loser. Corrupt. Cheat. Shill. Hateful and contemptuous of most Americans... what’s not to despise?
Robit17 (Toronto)
Clinton's comments show why she should have never been the nominee in 2016, and why she lost that year. Her narcissism got in her way then, and it's getting in her way now. She can't accept that Bernie is more popular than she ever was, and that he could well go on to victory which was beyond her grasp. You are absolutely correct that her dog-in-the-manger attitude and comments could become a weapon in Trump's hands if Bernie wins the nomination. Once again Hillary is thinking only of herself and not the Party.
Paula Jo Smith (Wilton, NY)
It saddens me that Clinton, and so many Clinton supporters cannot let go, and move on. We are in 2020, not 2016. We need to defeat Trump. How he got there is going to be debated for decades. Let's just keep our eyes on the prize. We can fight about the other stuff later.
Robert Pohlman (Alton Illinois)
Yeah I'll say it. The Clinton's...Hillary and Bill are two of the worst things that have happened to the image of the Democratic party. Their scandals although never serious in nature, nevertheless are always manna from heaven for the GOP right-wing media echo chamber. They are and depressingly have been, always the gift that keeps on giving if you're a Republican.
Nuckerhead (Vancouver)
Has anyone noticed that Hillary Clinton seems to have an almost pathological need to still be relevant, or at least be making headlines? I hoped she would have won in 2016, but she did not and it is time for her, and the news media , to move on. I've also thought that she likes to make the news when she has something to promote or sell. I think she had a book for sale when she made those Gabbard comments last year and now this one to coincide with her new project. Such self promotion. A tiresome Clinton specialty.
Critical Thinker (NYC)
Donald Trump is the worst possible outcome. Bernie runs a close second, for all of the reasons Hillary Clinton said. He still has not come out and denounced the use, on his behalf and by his staffers, of doctored videos and false information regarding Biden, implying that Biden favored cutting Social Security, by taking a video and cutting out the surrounding words. As Paul Klugman said, they did the equivalent of editing a video saying that "the Far Right says that everyone hates the Jews" and omitting the words "the Far Right" to imply that the speaker said "Everybody hates the Jews". After hearing these lies for three years from True and his supporters, after seeing the video slowing Nancy Pelosi's comments to make her seem halfway demented, slurring her speech, after all off these years of false lies slipping out off Trumps' mouth, we don't need another group of Win At All Costs types with no integrity at all, sitting in the White House.
Will McD (Denver)
Hillary Clinton should just go away. She is tainted and can only throw a negative light.
Bruce Bender (Santa Fe, NM)
I thought Sanders picked this fight? Just as impeachment begins... And he also picked one with Biden. Silly editorial.
Amy Luna (Chicago)
Can Mara Gay lend me that crystal ball she must have that enables her to read other people's minds to know the motivation and intent for their words and actions? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Gay is faulting Clinton for speaking for others, while she's speaking for Clinton.
N. Smith (New York City)
The surge of Hillary-haters here is almost overwhelming. But then again, the way the title of the article "Nobody likes Bernie Sanders" was destined to arouse such a reaction. Too bad it was mostly negative, and had little to do with allowing one to express their own opinion. Instead it was taken as a clarion call for Sanders supporters to sharpen their fangs all over again while forgetting about not only the need for unity in the Democratic, but about the First Amendment that grants freedom of speech. Apparently Mrs. Clinton is not the only one who has forgotten that Donald Trump is the opponent.
TrumpsGOPsucks (Washington State)
Once again, Hillary Clinton continues to insist on making everything about her. She lost the 2016 election by running a horribly inept campaign but continues to try and shift blame for that disaster on other people. She needs to go away and stay away. She is the reason that we have the most incompetent President that this country has ever experienced. Does she really want to be responsible for getting him reelected in 2020?
irene (fairbanks)
@TrumpsGOPsucks Aging divas really can't help themselves, and it's too late for them to change.
Mohammed Askari Chandoo (New York, NY)
Bingo, Ms. Gay! Defeating Donald Trump is the prize, and I, for one, will vote for ANY Democratic nominee. With her refusal to commit to supporting that eventual nominee, Secretary Clinton, demonstrates an inability to heal from past demons, whether real or imagined. The future of our Republic is at stake, Madame Secretary. Will you let your grudge, whether or not it is justified, destroy our nation?
Reader (San Francisco)
Bernie is the best candidate of all and perhaps Mrs. Clinton is envious because she never experienced in her supporters the kind of ardent loyalty that Sanders supporters justifiably have to him. Mrs. Clinton lost because she was never the fighter for economic justice that Sanders always has been. She needs to just get over herself now. Please stop being a bad sport, Mrs. Clinton - because it doesn't just make you look petty and ridiculous - it also endangers your country!
Branch Curry (Akumal, MX)
@Reader You've said it all but you've also hit on something no other reply has.... the fact that Clinton was never the fighter for economic justice that Sanders always has been.
Chris (NH)
No matter whether you stand on Sanders or Clinton, the bottom line is that "nobody likes him" is a mature, statesmanlike comment about real issues and what's at stack in the coming election, not a lowbrow, immature attack better suited to junior high school students. Bernie Bros, I dare you to debate me on that. I triple dog dare you.
elotrolado (central coastal california)
Perhaps Hilary is not feeling liked or appreciated for all that she has undoubtedly done. But please, work it out with a therapist, not in public. You are only aiding and abetting Trump.
Jim (Albany)
@elotrolado What has she actually done, again? Can you answer that with accomplishments not activities?
Dennis (Seattle)
Eyes on the prize. Hillary is irrelevant and she should recognize that fact.
Steve R (NY)
I'm not a Bernie fan, but Hillary should take responsibility for putting the country in this mess and just...go...away!
DJ (Tempe, AZ)
Hilary Clinton's comment about Sander's likeability is like Trump accusing political rivals of being liars.
Rachel (New England)
@DJ Just what is your point? When she was Secretary of State her approval ratings were over 60%. Suddenly, as a candidate for President, she is Cruella DeVille. Seriously. What do you know about her? She was a dedicated Senator for NY. Has been an incredibly dedicated, hard working, well informed public servant her entire adult life. Watch her interview with Howard Stern. Smart, charming, engaging. And right on all the issues. And, she is right about Bernie. Of all the candidates, he is the most unfit for the Presidency and I will have to think long and hard about voting for him and I am died in the wool Democrat who is just hoping he does not get the nomination. He is a demagogue of a different stripe than the one we have now.
Christopher Slevin (Michigan USA)
After back room dealings and calling in expensive favors she got the party nomination. The issue is that she gave the nation Donald Trump She will never be forgiven for that. The electorate had no stomach for her arrogance, greed, corruption and unending lust for power. Do the nation a favor and stay out of the limelight. You cast a very dark shadow
Judy (Canada)
Clinton has a right to express her opinion, however, it was a stupid thing to say and undermines Sanders in terms of becoming the nominee and in the election if he indeed is nominated. She was perfectly aware of what she was doing. Was it sour grapes? As the woman who had the nomination in 2016 and managed to lose against the least competent and capable opponent ever, she should refrain from such comments. She has a lot to berate herself about including her overarching sense of entitlement and lack of self-awareness. She could not have run a worse campaign and handed the win to Trump.
Rachel (New England)
I completely agree with Hillary and wish she had spoken out early about Bernie. His behavior in 2016 was dishonorable and disgraceful and, it must be stated, sexist. Further, he is not a member of the Democratic Party and thus had no right to complain about party rules then or now. There is no doubt in this writers mind that he said what Liz Warren alleges: Bernie is a cranky 78 year old angry white guy who does not believe a woman should be president. He would be a disaster as president. The press has given him a pass on all his proposals while hammering away at warren, who is far more accomplished and substantive. Bernie waves his arms and yells and the press thinks it is just great. It isn’t. It is annoying, offensive, and empty of real thoughtfulness. Finally, and most importantly, he does nothing to control the bullying of his so-called supporters. He claims he cannot do anything to stop them. This is nonsense. He sets the tone. By his silence, he supports it. Shame on him.
SST (NYC)
@Rachel A sane voice rises up from EVEN MORE blatant misogynist vitriol... A person of sound mind would think the transference of sexism's focus from Clinton to Warren would give one of them half a break. But no... Woman hating just got even bigger. Thank you for your entirely reasonable comment.
Jim (Albany)
@Rachel except for the fact that your statement completely reversed Sanders for Clinton, it is correct.
LIChef (East Coast)
Clinton could have licked her wounds and then emerged to do something positive and worthwhile with the last chapter of her life. Instead, she comes off as a bitter, old loser. As someone who voted for her and wish every single day that she had been elected, I am deeply disappointed in her comments.
Monsp (AAA)
I actually voted for her even after the DNC stole the nomination from Bernie, who actually won it. To be honest, I regret that now. She is as uninspiring and entitled now as she's ever been. We're all sorry that you stayed with Bill after his rampant cheating because you thought it was a good career move but honestly, just go away.
Des Johnson (Forest Hills NY)
"Hillary Clinton... shatters party unity based on her own festering resentment." Come on lady, if you even watched The View, you'd know that the Bernie Bros are still at it, and what Clinton is warning against is a rerun of 2016 now in 2020. Many Bernie Bros stayed away from the polls, some actually voted for Trump. And we're headed in that direction again this year, with festering misogyny and gutter attacks on Bernie's opponents all over the blogs. All this is going on while y'all tolerate Putin's interference and manipulation of opinion. Right on, Mara, go after the truth-telling old lady while tolerating the venomous old men.
Gordon Silverman (New York)
Mrs. Clinton “won” the election. Why would she do this? O yes, did she also throw in Jill Stein for good measure? Bill TOLD her to visit the states where polls showed her ahead, so why go. BECAUSE all the lawn markers were “Trump”. Bill is a shrewd politician, if nothing else. Ms. Gay, thank you for giving voice to her stupidity (or vindictiveness). Like neoliberals are want to say to the poor, “if you are in trouble, it’s your fault”. Mrs. Clinton, GET OVER IT. There’s lots of money to be made in uplifting speeches to the bankers.
TR NJ (USA)
Why is Mrs. Clinton going after Bernie Sanders and not Donald Trump? Trump stalked and bullied her on the debate stage; Bernie Sanders supported her wholeheartedly when she was the Democratic nominee. All Bernie did was offer an exciting alternative to candidacy and sh still e harbors such acrimony? If she had gone into the corners of this country like President Obama did, and like Bernie Sanders is doing as he campaigns, she might very well have won the election. She made serious mistakes and the result is Donald Trump, not Bernie Sanders. He, like most of the Democratic candidates, would make a great president. Mrs. Clinton's poorly formulated campaign has cost our country dearly.
dbw75 (LA)
She just gets scarier and crazier and more vindictive and unattractively behaving by the day. Unfortunately I don't think we've seen the lowest Behavior as low as Hillary can go. I think she's just in the bullpen throwing sliders change UPS getting ready for the big show. Hillary Clinton does not know the meaning of how low can I go
Joseph (Ile de France)
HRC is a monstrous waste of time by now, she-and her supporters-need to move on as she adds no value to the current political issues of our time.
Travelers (All Over The U.S.)
Ms. Gay. Trump isn't the only "opponent." Sanders and his supporters, in their self-righteous zeal, helped to get us Trump. Sanders and his socialism will turn America into his beloved Venezuela.
JBJ (NYC)
Disagree. Clinton was pointing out that nominating Sanders, Trump's dearest wish, is a fool's errand.
Jim (Albany)
@JBJ then why did Trump risk impeachment by going after Biden, rather than Sanders?
point-blank (USA)
Ms. Gay is not thinking like a WASP for obvious reasons. Mr. Sanders and his campaign exposed the underbelly of the campaign of Ms. Clinton in 2016. A mid-western WASP will never forget that. He is toast.
Amy Luna (Chicago)
Is anyone asking whether what she said was true? And whether, if it is true, that would speak to his ability to be elected and accomplish anything in office? It's just so much easier to "burn the witch" whenever a woman dares to speak her truth. She's "ruthless" "caustic" "rude" "toxic."
carl bumba (mo-ozarks)
Have we not learned anything from 2016? Less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses and Hillary Clinton has been thrust into the news. They are playing pupeteers, once again. Clearly, the objective is to create division and hurt Bernie Sanders, who now leads the nation in the latest CNN poll. If this discord helps Trump get elected again, so be it (in their eyes). Let's not gobble up the bait and, instead, turn to REAL issues that the country needs to address.
Coyote Old Man (Germany)
that she fails to recognize she is the albatross hanging around the necks of the current people seeking to be the nominee shows she never had a on her campaign.
PD Curasi (Nashville, TN)
HRC, FORGOTTEN BUT NOT GONE. A befitting phrase from the great film 'Moonstruck': "You wake up one morning and realize your life is built on nothing...and that's one, bad, crazy day..."
Branch Curry (Akumal, MX)
@PD Curasi "HRC: Forgotten but not gone." The t-shirts are printing now.
Steve Snow (Cumming, Georgia)
I like and respect Mrs. Clinton, her service to the nation should never be underestimated... but the gentle lady made a mistake by opening her mouth before fully vetting her brain.. that said, Mr. Sanders can't win,..he's an old man who's had a heart attack, a socialist senator who will be savaged in a general for all of these things. I had hoped that after his heart attack he would give reality an honest assessment and retire from the field, nobly. Had he done that Mrs. Clinton's unfortunate comment would never have been made.
Thomas David (Paris)
Let us all remember how the DNC sabotaged the Sander's campaign. Let us not forget the bullets flying when Hillary raced to her limo in Iraq. Let us ask WHY is she still throwing Sanders under the bus. She has a personality problem that is obvious. Get over it sore losers and get ready for the Sanders win. The world needs someone like Bernie Sanders.
Rafael Gonzalez (Sanford, Florida)
This thoroughly corrupt modern day politician has no class nor proper discretion when it comes to politics and her public pronouncements (i.e. "we came, we saw, we killed him," following Libyan leader Qhadaffi's horrific death at the hands of western-supported enemies). She would be well-advised to stay out of the public eye for the remainder of her life.
Mystery Lits (somewhere)
Just a reminder to everyone... Clinton did not beat Sanders. The DNC colluded and rigged the primaries against Bernie.... I mean, it is the only way Hillary can win at anything anymore...
Ross (Chicago)
Not very helpful, indeed!
richard (the west)
Nothing new here. The Clintons are, and always have been, first and foremost for the Clintons. Principles finish a very distant second. It wasn't for nothing that the late Paul Tsongas referred to Bill Clinton as the 'Pander Bear'.
R.E. (Cold Spring, NY)
I don't like Bernie, not because of his ideology, but because the last thing we need right now is another narcissistic president whose mode of communication is yelling. That being said, no Democrat should be disparaging any of the other candidates. This goes for Bernie as much as it does for Hilary. I don't like any of the current would-be candidates much, but I'll vote for whomever is the nominee. More than ever, the 2020 election is not about the lesser of two evils, it is about the making sure the most acceptable candidate defeats the most despicable man who has ever inhabited the White House.
SLS (centennial, colorado)
I'm going out on a limb here. I say, Hillary talk all you want. The election was stolen from you and Sanders did nothing to get his supporters to vote for you. The hate that is still out there for her amazes me. Blame Russia and trump for her losing the election.
Joe (Chicago)
Dear Hilary, However many don't like Sanders, multiply that by a lost election to Trump and your central and catalytic role in the Democratic Party's getting it handed to them and the ushering in of the 'Moral Majority' during your husband's first mid-term election. That's how many don't like you. Please begone.
Sandra (Northern Michigan)
This is absolutely correct, and what exactly would be the sense of trashing Bernie at this point, except the trumpian small, petty and nasty? I supported Hillary 100% the last time around and have been sickened since then. That said, 2016 is done and over. Stop trashing the Democratic candidates . . . you can leave that to trump and the republicans, they take great pleasure in it.
Fran (Midwest)
It will be interesting to see how many people are interested in a documentary about Hillary Clinton.
J (The Great Flyover)
This is not what’s needed. And, this is the kind of act that will give us 4 more years of this abomination. If “it” is breathing on it’s own, whomever it is, and has the nomination, we vote for it. Why does it have to be so hard to be a democrat?
Pundit761 (Singapore)
I disagree...Hillary has every right to present her stated opinion as anyone else who is 'fit to be heard,' and in 2016 at least, there were 65,853,514 Americans who listened enough to vote for her as President, so she probably has earned the right to be listened to. Also, am I the only one that finds it ironic that a member of the editorial board of the NYTimes would ask a prominent member of the Democratic party to essentially self-censor?
Dave (Austin)
Many of us screamed that Hillary is not the right candidate. Immediately it became a gender issue - misogyny, women-hater, etc. now she confirmed what Trump called - “nasty xxxxxxx.” Once again identity politics is being played to everyone’s detriment. Sad. One can disagree with a woman without being labeled as some hater. Nevertheless she is correct! I can’t see myself voting for self-destruction.
Todd Muller (Rockaway Beach)
No, she didn’t.
Patrick Donovan (Keaau HI)
Right on. We need to work together, not throw barbs.
Gina (Melrose, MA)
We always heard the media asking if 'Hillary was likeable' when she was running for president. We heard them ask, or declare, that 'Elizabeth Warren may not be likeable enough'. So, isn't fair that Hillary comments on Bernie's not being likeable? Perhaps it's not what is needed from Hillary in the political conversation right now though. Bernie is a irascible man for sure. If he was a woman acting like he does he would be labeled "shrill, irritating, unlikable". America is still struggling with it's misogyny and chauvinism.
Pete (California)
Hilary's lack of political skills on full display. It's no wonder, with tendencies such as this, she lost the electoral college vote.
Regular person (Columbus)
Hillary, will you please just go away. Please. We're tired of you. I was a Bernie supporter in 2016 but voted for Hillary because she was qualified and obviously better than Trump. But, it was partly her weaknesses as a candidate that helped bring us Trump. And, no these weaknesses had nothing to do with her being a woman. This whole Clinton Foundation thing and connection to big money seemed a little weird. Plus, she didn't visit Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. enough to make sure they voted Democratic. Plus, she was very weak with using the whole personal email thing. Of course, Trump and his ilk are far worse, but Hillary knew better unlike the current fool. So, Hillary's sour grapes now need to go away.
Jeff in Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)
From a New Yorker article in 2016, "Bernie Sanders’s Hard Fight for Hillary Clinton" -- "One of the many things that makes Donald Trump angry is that Bernie Sanders does not seem to hold grudges." https://www.newyorker.com/news/amy-davidson/bernie-sanderss-hard-fight-for-hillary-clinton Sanders worked hard for Clinton, even after WikiLeaks revealed the nastiness in John Podesta’s e-mails. What she is saying now reminds one of her other poorly-thought-through comments: "...you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic – Islamophobic – you name it." That damaged her campaign and revved Trump supporters. Now she's risking damaging the party. Hillary's loss is her own. She needs to truly own that and do everything she can to support the nominee and defeat Trump. We cannot risk people sitting this one out.
Branch Curry (Akumal, MX)
@Jeff in Brooklyn Awesome. Everyone who clings to the myth that Bernie somehow hurt Clinton in the 2016 general election, please go read the article, above. Another quote from that article: "The truth is that Bernie Sanders is very, very angry—at Donald Trump. He is angry enough to have spent weeks travelling on behalf of Hillary Clinton, speaking for her in union halls and arenas, to students and activists."
Meredith (New York)
This is the 1st I've seen in the NYT anything even remotely positive about Sanders. Says he campaigned vigorously for Clinton--- “Sanders has been one of the real champions of this campaign,” The New Yorker reported at the time', writes Mara Gay here. Too bad it wasn't the NY Times that she could quote reporting that. Instead The Times has been resolutely anti Sanders-- in reporting and op eds, never giving his proposals the respect of proper and objective debate. Krugman's recent column insulted Sanders with snide phrases--- it seems compulsive. Why is Sanders such a threat to the establishment and much of the media? The media gets big profits from political ads which are paid for by big corporate donors to elections. TV is inundated by harma and insurance commercials day and night. The insurance and pharma industries don't want Medicare for All, higher taxes, and reduced profits. All related.
Branch Curry (Akumal, MX)
@Meredith Yep, so true.
Edward (Sherborn, MA)
Thanks for this column. A welcome and thoughtful analysis, which, in the context of the New York Times' reflexive animus against Bernie Sanders, took no small amount of guts.
Jane (Boston)
Bernie is doing damage to the Democratic Party and it’s ability to defeat Trump. She is right to attack him.
Alexander Vethers (New York)
some people are not able to let go.
Scrumpie0 (MN)
Bernie Sanders is still THE PROBLEM for the democratic party (of which he is not a member). He will pull the same dirty trick he did in 2016 - holding out even though it will be clear he is not the nominee. If we don't recognize this history, it is bound to be repeated. He is a spoiler. He is not going to fight for the eventual nominee. He has now lied about Joe Biden's stance on social security and his followers are at it again with their lies in an op ed. Bernie is a dirty fighter and again, the only mistake the democratic party continues to make is to allow him to run as a democrat. He refuses to join the caucus during each session - he only pops up when it's time to run for president. Mrs. Clinton is right to recall all of this as a warning.
Andrew Shin (Toronto)
Hillary is struggling with the same ailment that plagues other superannuated politicians--the desire for relevance. I have long admired and respected the Clintons, but Hillary threw me for a loop with her unwarranted criticism of Tulsi Gabbard. I appreciate the way the Clintons raised their daughter Chelsea. Bill has better political instincts than Hillary. Hillary obviously decided to come out on behalf of her friend Elizabeth Warren, who is making the same error as is the NYT that Hillary made--"Count me in" (the woman card). Hillary would be more helpful keeping her counsel.
HL (Arizona)
The Republican party has to be defeated because the far right has taken over the party. Democrats don't have to unite around a far left candidate. Democrats have to lead with a big tent party. Bernie Sanders isn't a democrat. He's been a mediocre Senator for years and has no qualifications to be President. Mrs. Clinton hit the nail on the head.
John Harrison (Melbourne)
Hillary was a poor and divisive candidate. No historical revisionism involving Russian hacking, the weaknesses of the electoral colleges, Bernie Bros etc. can change that. Here she illustrates again her failings with this untimely and intemperate commentary. And to the extent there is any doubt - the facts speak for themselves - she lost to Donald Trump....
Serg (New York)
It always boils down to She-Devil Hillary and Saint Bernie. Wouldn't be surprising if most of the people writing pieces about her recent opinions. The equivalent of 'drop dead grandma" are the same ones too 'pure' to have for voted for her.
Lee (Southwest)
Yeah, she has to say she'll go with the party. Otherwise, she'd be helping to ensure Trump's win, and that is too horrible to contemplate much less indirectly facilitate. Bernie was a jerk about the Biden video that used a patently ironic line as if he meant it - and then Bernie doubled down. NOT GOOD. But I'm a socialist (for Biden), and there is just no issue: Even Bernie, rather than Trump.
mbaris1 (Arlington)
Hillary Clinton was the main instigator of Libyan intervention, egging on the reluctant Obama. She jumped up with glee when Gadaffi was killed. Libya today is in shambles, after thousands have died following the conflict and ISIS now has a base of support there. Instead of giving interviews expressing her bitterness about Bernie Sanders. let me match her bitterness and suggest that maybe she should be in the Hague, defending herself in the Hague against war crimes,
Hddvt (Vermont)
Hillary didn't really beat Bernie. She cheated. She didn't really beat trump either.
AB Bernard (Pune)
Haven’t we paid a big enough price for Hillary ? I wish she would just go back into the woods and leave us alone.
Al Davis (Minnesota)
Clinton won't accept blame for her loss, even though she spent more time fundraising than campaigning and didn't bother after the convention to pay Wisconsin a visit. Even so, she beat Trump by millions of votes. Too bad her brain trust didn't know how to count electoral votes: 271 was the magic number that eluded her. Yes, there was misogyny. There was interference. But who can argue that she wasn't her own worst enemy? She would have been a competent status quo President; we need a woman in the White House to break that stupid barrier. Unfortunately, charisma can't be taught; if it could be, she would have learned it, because her two mentors, her husband and Barack Obama, have it by the ton. Instead, she's apparently stewing in her own juices. The unfortunate thing in 2016 is that everybody but Bernie stepped aside so that the Democrats could coronate her. If Warren and Biden and others had challenged her, either we might have had a different nominee or she might have improved her campaign savvy sufficiently to win the states that decided the Presidency.
Eddie B. (Toronto)
"Mrs. Clinton, You Already Beat Bernie Sanders. Trump Is the Opponent Now." Hear, hear!
richard (pennsylvania)
Hillary's comments are spot on. Bernie is absolutely unelectable and his extreme positions and autocratic tendencies should worry any voter who thinks Trump is a dangerous President.
Sage (Santa Cruz)
Clinton did not beat Sanders. The foolish, self-serving Democratic establishment beat Sanders, and America lost to Trump as a result (and has shown little sign of acknowledging its betrayal, let alone learning basic lessons from the resulting three-years-and-counting disaster).
Shelley Larkins (Portland, Oregon)
Bernie can't win. His candidacy is absurd. He's not just an old grandpa who has had a heart attack -- he sounds like an old grandpa who has had a heart attack. He is an iconoclast who refuses to compromise (and is proud of it, by gum!) but he will never have a Congress that allows him to govern without compromising. So we'll end up with another four years of inaction and heartache. Committed Democrats will hold their noses and vote for him but he will never ever win with the less committed suburban women we need to beat Trump. How do we know Bernie is not the answer? Because Trump wants Bernie to be the Democratic candidate. Trump is a vile monster but he has good political instincts. Trump knows he can beat Bernie and Hillary knows that too.
Joe (Ketchum Idaho)
From one extreme to the other...So many intelligent and mentally balanced Democrats are wondering: would a communist be an improvement over Trump? And they are concluding: No. Bernies primary supporters are the results of the terrible deterioration of America's education system that is unable to teach critical thinking skills.
Pragmatist (New Mexico)
Remembering Senator Sanders's behaviour in the 2016 primary, I'd say, "What's sauce for the gander is sauce for the goose."
Phantomtides (Washington DC)
Refusing to consider any candidate besides one's favorite is juvenile. Mara Gay is spot-on: There is ONE job, and it is to excise the Trumpian cancer from the presidency and from American government. The difference between Sanders and Clinton is minuscule compared to the difference between any of the Democratic candidates and the incumbent, and anything that distracts from the ONE job is noise and nothing more. If you're not making that noise, tune it out; if you are, for god's sake, stop it. We have grown-up work to do here.
Vince (NJ)
When asked to comment on what Clinton said, Bernie responded, "On a good day, my wife likes me." Bernie, you are a mensch. You make New York proud.
Carl Yaffe (Rockville, Maryland)
For some reason, Hillary thought we needed a reminder of what an arrogant and petty person she is, and why we should be thankful she isn't president (as bad as the incumbent is). Actually, most of us didn't.
Tinku (NJ)
Nobody wants your opinions Hillary. You have messed up one election after blowing up solid blue states of Michigan and Wisconsin and paying no attention to middle class. Please don't wade in again and become a party spoiler again. She should just retire.. I mean who would have heard of Hillary if not for husband Bill. She should take whatever lame successes she got by tagging along and just stay out. That would be the biggest help.
Sean (Los Angeles)
Hillary Clinton continues to show every day why this country will never elect a woman as president! It's really quite astonishing!
Kingfish52 (Rocky Mountains)
Hilary and her most ardent supporters whined and whined about how Bernie and his supporters were "sore losers" and didn't support her candidacy, but the evidence shows otherwise. And now we see who the REAL sore loser is: Mrs. Clinton. I understand. It must be hard to be anointed as the next President by the DNC, and have everything rigged in your favor by the party and the MSM - including the NYT - only to have some upstart "socialist" have the audacity to challenge her! Did he not recognize royalty when he saw it? "Queen of the Status Quo", First Lady of Wall St.! So above all the "little people" who actually follow the laws, like not using your own private email server to conduct official government business. And so above all the "little people" in the Rust Belt who can't afford the price tag on her campaign donations so I guess they were out of luck. So it's no surprise at all that she would be vindictive now, and act like the spoiled wannbe monarch she is. I suspect too however that she's been encouraged to trash Sanders by her friends in the Establishment, who are pulling out all the stops to block Bernie from the nomination. His vow to upset the Status Quo has them terrified. As tone deaf as she is, she doesn't realize just how little her opinion matter to the people who will decide the next President.
Hugh Stoner (CA)
I'm still waiting for the transcripts of her speeches to Goldman Sachs that she was paid obscene amounts to make. She is probably the world's most hated person. She cheated Bernie in 2016 with the DNC and the Super Delegate's help. Bernie still campaigned for her in the general election. Now this. HRC was a a Young Republican before she met Bill. She still is a closet conservative.
Kerohde (SF, CA)
I could not agree with Mara Gay more, and I don't even support Sanders.
AutumnLeaf (Manhattan)
What I love about the Democratic party, are its endless efforts to self destroy.
M. Lanier (Utah)
"Nobody likes him"? It's childish, petty, tantrums like this that prove what the republicans are saying about the democratic party.....oh wait! I mean what the democrats are saying about the tea party, ugh! I mean what evangelicals are saying about liberals. Hold On! I mean what men say about hormonal women...no, that's not it... I mean - it's childish, petty tantrums like this that Just Need To Stop. Please. If the Democratic party, and those who represent it, begin acting like Donald Trump and those supporting him, why hold an election? You only give more voters a a reason to stay home.
James Peri (Colorado)
Dear Hillary, I, along with nearly 66 million others, voted for you in the 2016 election. It's now time for you to stand down, be humble, and to focus on being constructive. Or, if you cannot be constructive, be silent. Why? Because your divisive statements may help Trump gain another four years in the White House. That would certainly qualify as "deplorable."
Rick Tornello (Chantilly VA)
Where's Mr. Smith? Why isn't he back in Washington?
Igyana (NY)
So many people dislike Hillary on both sides. Maybe this will help Bernie!
Michael Browder (Chamonix, France)
No, Mara Gay, you are wrong. We don't put up with just anything in the process of trying to beat trump. That argument followed logically allows for anything to happen without criticism. Sorry, but that is just wrong.
Bernadette (Walnut Creek, Ca)
Hillary should just stay out of this fight for now. Both Sanders and Hillary played dirty (DNC more than both of them) in 2016. I agree she increases the divisiveness in this campaign now.
Rea Tarr (Malone, NY)
Who are you, Ms. Gay, to say what is or is not the gracious thing to do? And, of course, there is no such behavior as "gracious" in politics; never has been, never will be. So let Mrs. Clinton, a citizen like every other citizen, freely tell us what she thinks -- even if that might even be ungracious, or downright rude. (I, myself, don't think I want to vote for a man whose chickadees tend to say things like, "Wow. Rude.")
Jonathan Baron (Staunton, Virginia)
Been seeing the usual nonsense in the comments section, and elsewhere, about Bernie's folks getting Trump elected and numerous other popular misconceptions. But to Mara's point, you'd imagine that would be all too self-evident. The issue has long been what is it about Democrats that makes them assemble, as Mo Udall noted, into circular firing squads? My long-ago boss, Barney Frank had the best answer. "Democrats prefer fighting each other rather than Republicans because they find it more intellectually stimulating." Pity there is no intellect whatsoever to recent internecine sniping. Republicans have long had the smartest strategists and the dumbest candidates. Now, for Democrats, it's feeling like the worst of both worlds.
Applarch (Lenoir City, TN)
Trump was able to scratch out his ugly Electoral College win because of the actions of three men: Vladimir Putin, James Comey, and Bernie Sanders. Sanders has never been a Democrat and has spent decades bashing the Democratic Party. He is a political innovator with his invention of the non-negative negative campaign, piously claiming to have never run a negative ad even while piling mud on his opponents as fast as he can shovel. He relentlessly attacked the Democratic front-runner as "corrupt" and stood by while the misogynistic Bernie Bros savaged the first female candidate in US history to have a real shot at the presidency. Long after it was mathematically impossible to win the nomination, long after Trump's rivals had dropped out after finding themselves in the same situation as Sanders, he was out undermining the presumptive Democratic nominee. The spectacle of his supporters parading through the streets of Philadelphia carrying water for Trump did enormous damage to Democratic chances for a historic outcome in 2016. Clinton is merely reminding us that "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
Peter Aretin (Boulder, Colorado)
Come on, now: Bernie's duplicitous entry into the race (I just want to influence the platform), his dilatory departure from a race he wasn't going to win, and his petulant, parvenu Democrat supporters helped put Trump in office. No one should be trying to shush Hillary.
Chris M. (Seattle, WA)
Very well put. Thank you!
Marty f (California)
Sanders and his minions stayed home in 2016 regardless of his “support”. How did that work out? Clinton is simply reminding voters to beware of history repeating itself in 2020
Laura (CT)
Al Gore conceded the presidency and went on to do something constructive.... like try to save the planet. Hillary sows destruction at every turn. I voted for her in 2016 and mourned the lost dream of our first woman president. Now, like virtually everyone else it seems, I just want her to go away.
Ambient Kestrel (So Cal)
Count me as one more Democrat who voted for Sec. Clinton in 2016 and is now a Clinton hater. Ironically, she's just like Trump in blaming everyone but herself for the outcome of that election.
Norburt (New York, NY)
Wow. Talk about rude. Not only this column but so many of the comments. HC has a right to have opinions and express them, just like any other citizen. Why should she "ride off into the sunset?" Why should she be labeled "unpleasant" because she has understandably strong views about Bernie. She is not trying to "lead the party;" she is not trying to elect Trump. She is expressing a view a lot of us share, that Bernie has been a lot of hot air for 40 years and accomplished nothing. That his followers are rabid and blind. That his continued ascendance threatens to have the same effect it had in 2016, helping Trump into office. This is a primary contest. Candidates must compete against each other. Clinton is warning us that Bernie is STILL the wrong candidate.
Eric (Buffalo)
Mara Gay is wrong here. We need more of this direct critique, not less. It's healthy for a primary to have direct, honest, no-nonsense opinion-making so that voters get past the ridiculous fluff and self-congratulation of the candidates' campaign rhetoric. What's more--Hillary Clinton is almost always right about people. She was right about Putin controlling Trump. She was right about deplorables. She was telling it like it is back in 2015 and 2016 when the greater public was paying no attention to the unsavory connection between Trump and Russia. Hillary Clinton knows stuff. She is smart. I want her take whenever I can get it.
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
Petty and vindictive, she is a sad shell of the former Secretary of State and Senator.
Michael Kennedy (Portland, Oregon)
Has this woman read any newspapers or watched anything on television since November 2016? This country has moved on from her disastrously arrogant and unconnected campaign that resulted in her loss and Trump sitting in the White House. Sanders is not the Big Bad Wolf. Trump is, and he's on a rampage. Her tactless statement - alongside her famously arrogant 2016 line, "basket of deplorables" quip - only stirs up mud. She needs to apologize and go back home, because none of this insulting Sanders, or anyone else, does any good. It just brings things down to Trumps level.
SD (Arizona)
HRC should go home and be quiet already! The only thing she can do now is help Trump.
Bob (Boston, USA)
It shows a lack of introspection and a lack of character to not recognize your own flaws. Hillary was a former Secretary of State/Senator who lost the most easily winnable election to a reality show clown. She has nobody to blame but herself for the loss. The 2016 primary was unfairly rigged in Hillary's favor. There were leaked emails showing that the DNC favored Clinton, and as a result, Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned in shame. Then, as an added insult to Sanders and her supporters, she hired Schultz to be her campaign manager the next week. Even after this cheating, Sanders still was decent enough to campaign for her. And yet, she still blames him and his supporters for her loss. Her supporters and even some in the media throw around condescending, childish nicknames like "Berniebro," because they can't think of a legitimate argument. Its Trumpian to its core. Also, its laughably absurd that someone calls Bernie a misogynist, who is married to a well known predator and was friends with both Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. Hillary Clinton needs to do the country a favor and go away.
Biff (America)
I agree with Mara. Mrs. Clinton seems intent on not stopping until she is the most hated Democrat by Democrats in the party. She needs to pull a MacArthur and just quietly fade away.
Maureen (philadelphia)
When Bernie wins Hillary will be first in line to see how his presidency can benefit her.
Mike B (Boston)
Stirring up old resentments of the Democratic base, just Hillary Clinton doing all she can to get Trump re-elected.
Cathy (Hopewell Junction, NY)
Frankly I am with Hillary on this one. I have never believed that Sanders can win; and that he forced open fractures in the party in 2016 that we won't mend. I wish he'd just go away. I also think it is too late that the party is too fractured and that voters for Democrats won't side with a candidate they don't like, even as Republicans will. It is a formula for Trump 2020. Maybe it is unfair, and maybe the party would have disintegrated anyway, into purists and pragmatists, but fair or not, I blame Sanders 2016 campaign as much as I blame a lot of foolish GOP voters for the toxic dissolution of America I see in Washington now.
ChristineMcM (Massachusetts)
I honestly can't believe she said all that, and I'm disgusted. As a former supporter, I get every point that Mara Gay makes. By generating headlines and the smug satisfaction of getting her anger out, she has made herself the issue, instead of the primaries, the final candidate, and the need to beat Trump. Tone deaf and so totally unnecessary. Hillary, you're destroying the good will you had from your supporters, despite your role in your loss, and providing grist for the GOP spin cycle. You would do all Democrats a favor by exiting the scene from now through next November.
mijosc (brooklyn)
Remember, before Trump became an actual threat to win the presidency, he and the Clintons were pals.
Amanda Jones (Chicago)
The Clintons never disappoint---what both Hillary and Bill need to do is go out to dinner with Jimmy Carter---he may not have been a great President, but, in retirement is was a great retired President.
Annabelle K. (Orange County, California)
I’d appreciate it very much if Clinton could channel Pelosi in her public conduct.
Luc Lapierre (Montréal)
I'm no Sanders supporter. But how come no prominent Democrat has dared tell Hillary Clinton to get over 2016, rally behind one of the 2020 Democratic candidates or shut up if she's still willing to play victim.
Joni (NYC)
Bernie ruined the world by getting mixed up in 2016- we have him to thank for Trump.
SRF (New York)
Great response by Bernie: "On a good day, my wife likes me." And we do, too, Bernie. -- Your many fans
Edward Clark (Seattle)
Clinton's comments are calculated to help Biden so if he wins, Biden will give her some power in his administration. Mrs. Sleaze strikes again, only this time it will backfire.
bustamante (nyc)
Why is Hillary Clinton addressed as Mrs. Clinton? Isn't she properly Secretary Clinton? If not, I'm quite sure Ms. Clinton will do in 2020.
Steven (Marfa, TX)
Clinton’s negative comments in Bernie will actually work in his favor. It’s clear that the old Democratic Party is as corrupt as the Republican Party; that’s how and why Trump snuck in. It’s time for a real change, not just Hope and some change, and not enough change to even buy a Starbucks coffee.
Uofcenglish (wilmette)
HiIlary has been a straight shooter on her rivals with no mincing of words. She said Trump was "Putin's puppet" during the debates. She was right. I take her views seriously, and stop blaming Hillary (who won the most votes despite Comey and Russia) for Trump. I am hearing a lot of misogyny in the criticisms of Clinton and her failure-- she's arrogant, presumptuous; she ought to be quiet. In reality, she was a respected and effective Secretary of State. She has been an advocate for children and women throughout the world. The Russians and the Chinese feared her ability to promote democracy. Prior to the last campaign smears she was incredibly popular. A lot of time and money has been spent to smear her. I guess it worked despite the fact that most of what was said were awful lies (child sex ringleader!?) or comments taken out of context. Today she is not campaigning. She is voicing her opinion as well she should. I don't see her assessment of Bernie to be out of line at all. It is food for thought and introspection. I believe history will vindicate her, but not the current American voters (and Times readers) who keep trying to find someone, other than themselves, to blame for the sorry state of our current politics.
Chevy (South Hadley, MA)
It is a truism that "you can't unring the bell", but, please, Hillary, apologize immediately and pledge to support whichever candidate wins the Democratic nomination! “Nobody likes him (Bernie)"? Isn't that what Trump wanted people to believe about you? You proved him wrong to the tune of three million more votes - people who came out for you or were wise to what Trump would do with the mantle of the imperial Presidency. Of course, you have a right to support your favorite(s), but this unexpected negativity is unnecessary and only hurts the Party. Let the primaries decide the nominee. The New York Times just endorsed both women frontrunners in the race and parsed the rest justly, including Bernie. They did their job; your voice is a distraction.
Sharon (Tn)
Hillary should be quiet, vote for whoever she chooses and realize her turn is over.
Morton (New York)
Great reminder of obligations Mrs. Clinton. No way to remove DT! She ran a disaster campaign nonetheless winning popular vote, to the archaic electoral college. Democrats must get it together DT winning second term puts final nail is coffin of of our imperfect democracy further along to Dictatorship fostered by DT, republican senators purposefully supporting him for votes of his base. (And also being in the pocket of Putin). Moscow Mitch a traitor ot his obligations of fairness -- lifted Deripaska sanctions gaining building of plant in KY. Graham in lock-step shifting principles for personal gains.
Marko (Seattle)
Bernie's message is what she is after. In Washington DC if you are not a team player (and protector of the status quo), you get treated like Bernie and Warren. Bill Clinton was the President that moved the Democratic party to a sterilized center, ensuring new generations would struggle to understand what the party actually stands for. Bernie and Warren are the future of the party (along with AOC and her team). The Clintons are a dynasty that is bound to fade, and new generations that were never given a reason to like the status quo will make sure of that. Warren is a woman, so I assume that to retain some credibility, Hillary is wary of treating her the same way.
Edward G. (Reno, NV)
Hillary's statement does not surprise me. Hillary is trying to undermine a progressive candidate when he is limited in his response by his Senate obligations. I see this and other actions by the Party leaders as a strategic ploy to maintain their power in the face of a grassroots, Progressive surge. Did you wonder why Pelosi "caved" to pressure and sent over the impeachment documents to the Senate when she did? A mere two weeks before the first round (Iowa Caucus) of selection for the Democratic Contender? This one action sidelined three active candidates for President from this contest, two of whom are progressives. If you have not been paying attention, the progressive vote between Warren and Sanders combined makes Joe Biden look like the Spencer Tracy character in the movie "The Last Hurrah", great human, old style politician, and loosing. I may look like the guy in the tin foil hat, but I just watched a very supportive 20 min interview of Joe Biden on the Morning Joe show (MSNBC) where the conservative host could not find a questionable thing to say about the candidate. Now is the ideal time for the Old Guard, establishment Democrats (the ones currently in positions of power) to strike. To manipulate the process in favor of the guy they see as most likely protect them, their power, and prestige. Now, Ms Clinton's divisive comment. Not made in the vacuum of an independent voice, poorly timed, but as one of many steps for a strategy of the Power Brokers.
SST (NYC)
There is a lot of misguided and simply untrue statements in this opinion piece. The thing that stands out the most to me is Ms. Gay—who it appears is an ardent Bernie supporter—presumes that Mrs. Clinton's remarks are disruptive to the point of shattering party unity. Every 2016 Hillary supporter I know plans on supporting whoever wins the democratic nomination. Not supporting the democrat running against trump is a Bernie Bro move. Those of us who love Hillary FOREVER don't play that way...
Little Doom (Berlin)
THANK YOU for this essay, Ms. Gay. Clinton's remarks were pointless, graceless and damaging. She's shown tremendous ingratitude to someone who supported her with his whole heart and tremendous energy. Someone in her inner circle needs to give her a copy of Aesop's fables and tell her "Don't be a dog in the manger."
Amy Luna (Chicago)
Thank you to Bernie's supporters for giving us yet another example of the double standards with which they (male and female) treat female candidates. Let's not look at the content of Clinton's remarks. Let's just burn her at the stake for making them and slander her character.
David Michael (Eugene, OR)
Hillary Clinton is a decent person with a mile long mean streak. I pity her husband, and of course, Bernie Sanders. In a way, I'm happy she never made it to the presidency.
Khal Spencer (Los Alamos, NM)
Nobody likes Bernie? I guess 13,206,428 Americans were "nobody" in 2016. Hillary can spout off all she wants but if she is trying to work for a Dem victory in 2020 this is a funny way to do it.
Jerry (Peoria, IL)
Not a team player, eh? You mean he has trouble getting along with establishment Democrats who answer to the same corporate masters as most Republicans? It's just awful to not be a team player, like all those team players in the Senate now who are not going to allow evidence and witnesses into the trail because their team leader said that's the way it's going to be. I think we have enough team leaders in Congress leading this country into a cesspool Time to shake it up one way or another.
Tim Kane (Mesa, Arizona)
I think she really hates Bernie because she knows that if she had made him her VP candidate she would have easily picked up the 100k votes she needed to win in the rust belt - and might have even stollen some votes from Stein. There was no expense in making Bernie the VP — its a nothing burger minister w/out portfolio. In 1980 Reagan faced the same decision. His wing of the GOP won. He chose the opposing wing’s champion as his VP to make sure they had a reason to show up at the polls on Election Day. This is called Poli-Sci 101: Expanding your base. Reagan won. Somehow Hillary’s campaign made the inadvertent decision to rather Trump win then give progressives a seat at the table even though its a nothingburger seat. That was a fatal calculation: the south gave her the nomination but those states wouldn’t be there for her in the General. She needed the states that Bernie won. It was so obvious even Reagan could have figured it out. Somewhere inside her, Hillary is kicking herself for not being as smart as Reagan was in picking his primary rival to be his VP. That’s got to hurt. In the mean time, she’s blaming Bernie & his Bro’s. There’s the pity.
Thomas (San jose)
Will Rogers once joked, I belong to no organized political party, I am a loyal Democrat. His irony is still true today. Decades after George Wallace, Ralph Nader, and Eugene McCarthy disgruntled Liberals and progressives, refuse to support their party’s nominee No other behavior is mor likely to reelect President Trump. Hilary Clinton, like Obama, has been silent about Trump and the Democratic candidates for three years. Now she has reverted to form. She places trashing her 2016 opponent , Bernie Sanders, above the only mission her party has: defeat Trump and restore the Senate to Democratic Party control. Once again catagorizing a primary Democratic opponent as unfit , she unleashes her political Id as a weapon to smite her enemies. Unfortunately, the entire cast of Democrats suffer from Democrat’s genetic illness. Each lets their passion to be elected justify personal victory by any means necessary. She will not be the only Democrat to sooth their anger by getting even by all means necessary. In the end they may give Trump his second term.
Mark Frankel (Toronto)
Her inept comments about Sanders just reinforce my impression that she helped mightily to lose the 2016 election. I'm no fan of Sanders but the Democrats need to focus on winning the election, not tearing each other down.
Kaptain Machete (Oklahoma City)
Her behavior proves that Trump voters got it half right - that it was important Clinton not be president.
balto (Baltimore)
Trump keeps on running against Hillary. Hillary keeps running against Bernie. What is wrong with these people?
Vincent (San Francisco)
Bernie is just as big of a threat to the current Democratic monied interests as he is to the Republican interests. This is the system's antibodies trying to take him out.
magicisnotreal (earth)
She still can't or won't accept that she lost because of herself and herself alone. Had she not shot herself in the feet multiple times the help Trump got from Russia would not have made any difference. Instead she chose to call what turned out to be at least 60 million of the people she was asking to vote for her deplorable, and she simply ignored as if they did not exist the people of several states whose delegates gave the election to Trump. It is your own fault HRC and no one else. Oh and she being a member of the 1% is terrified of Bernie bring back the New Deal.
Jeff (California)
Bernie sander is the biggest threat to the Democratic party being able to win the upcoming Presidential election. If he doesn't get the nomination, his supported will sit out the election just like they did 4 years ago. If he does, a lot of Democrats will refuse to vote for him. N Bernie Sanders has been a politician for his whole adult life but has accomplished practically nothing.
larryL (California)
What goes around seems to come back around. Sanders and his minions helped get Trump elected.
OrchardWriting (New Hampshire)
Hillary Clinton has done infinitely more and suffered infinitely more for the Democratic Party--and with the Clinton Global Initiative, the world--than Sanders ever has attempted to do. And Sanders isn't even a Democrat. She has earned her opinion, right to speak, and be heard.
Shades Of Washington (Grants Pass, Oregon)
I would like to thank Sanders for his contributions to our festering civil war. Without his bullying on the asylum issue we probably would have been able to avoid Trump. Winning elections “at any cost” has certainly cost America.
Barb Lindores (FL Gulf Coast)
Hillary beat Trump by 3 million votes, let’s not ever forget that. However, as one of her avid supporters, I feel she has tarnished her reputation by speaking out at this time. Regardless of her personal feelings toward Bernie (and how could she not be resentful of many of his tactics during the 2016 campaign), she needs to “let it go” for the greater good of defeating Trump. I don’t think Bernie is the person who can defeat Trump, and I hope he isn’t our candidate. To me, Mike Bloomberg is the only person focusing on defeating Trump, while the others are shooting in a circle. Other good candidates had to drop out because of lack of funds before they had an opportunity to be heard... what a system.
carl bumba (mo-ozarks)
@Barb Lindores Once again....these 3 million votes came largely from the western-most time zones, which are effectively excluded from the election process (because ours is the only major democracy that does not have (pre)election blackout periods and call elections like horse races). Consequently, early reporting states in the general election, like early primary states in the nomination process, have an over-sized role. Candidates don't bother campaigning in and making commitments to these states. Trump spent far less money than Hillary for his campaign in general and not even a dime in California, where he wisely didn't step foot. This 3 million is basically meaningless. One look at the 2016 election results - by county - tells the tale of a VERY unpopular democratic candidate, across the entire country... and, thus, a fair election. We should not draw the wrong conclusions from what happened in 2016 if we don't wish to repeat it.
TimeForChange (New Woman)
The Clintons need to get themselves out of the way. I voted for both, but both have been very disappointing. Time for a fresh new beginning. I'd like to see an Amy-Pete team, in either order.
VKG (Boston)
This is no surprise. She and the DNC did everything they could to minimize his chances last time. I thought it was just nasty politics as usual in 2016, but her repetition of animus towards him now indicates some deeper seated character flaw in Hillary Clinton that has always made me uneasy, despite my lack of attraction for Bernie Sanders. I voted for her, but was not happy about it. She lost, and while her bitterness may reflect her belief that Sanders’ supporters unwillingness to vote for her in the general election tanked her White House bid, I would ask that she grow up...it’s really not all about her. She lost because she couldn’t convince enough people in key states to vote for her, period.
Casey (portland)
@VKG well she didnt even go to those key states. hillary was a huge mistake in 2016 and probably the only person capable of losing to Trump. A ham sandwich would have beaten her.
Alexander Scala (Kingston, Ontario)
I recall that once Clinton had secured the nomination in 2016 there was a moment in which many people paused aghast, realizing that they'd just given themselves a choice between the two worst people in the United States. Then each side got down to the job of deluding itself that the other side's candidate was even worse than its own. It may be time for Americans to think about replacing the exalted, semi-monarchical and inherently authoritarian office of the President of the United States of America with something quieter -- a committee, for example.
del s (Pensacola FL)
Of course Hillary isn't about to 'do the right thing' and support Bernie. The only person Hillary is interested in backing is Hillary herself. She's hoping for a brokered convention in Milwaukee, in Wisconsin, a state she ignored in her 2016 campaign to her everlasting sorrow. Once the super delegates have their say? Here she comes. And yes, trump will defeat her resoundingly. She's not going away. Not a chance.
E.N. (Chicago)
I wish Mrs. C could be a little more diplomatic especially since she was the Leader of the Diplomat Pack for a few years. I also wish she'd won the electoral college in 2016.
MichaelW (Richmond, VA)
I appreciate the stakes driving Ms. Gay's argument, but there appears to be a richly unfair double standard at play here. When Bernie rages or the President rages, they're "telling it like it is" and "taking on the establishment". When Hillary rages she's "disrupting party unity". Lest we forget, it was Bernie Sanders who shivved Hillary Clinton first, first by making political hay of the Goldman Sachs speeches, then by generally implying she was corrupt (which became the now-incumbent's chief talking point during the general election campaign, i.e. "Crooked Hillary"), and then after the election he said "it's not enough to simply wave your arms and say 'I'm a woman, vote for me!", which was a very sexist and dismissive way to sum up a campaign where she got three million more votes than the winner and four million more votes than him. By my read, as a citizen no longer on any public payroll or in contention for any office, Hillary doesn't owe Bernie or us anything. Certainly nothing more than what we all owe each other: candor and the respect for each other's freedom to say what's on our minds.
Viv (.)
@MichaelW Bernie did not rage at his opponent when his only job was to support the Dem nominee. Likewise, Trump restricted his attacks on Republican candidates to the campaign. Once the race was over, everyone toed the line to support Trump. Trump supported the Republican positions, despite the fact that it's obvious he personally disagrees with many of them (e.g. abortion). Hillary's post-election behavior does nothing to dispel the impression that she is not "Crooked Hillary". At a time when most statesmen do charity work or teach at universities, she chooses to promote herself - especially at times when the spotlight should be on other Dem candidates. First it wast tone deaf fireside chat tour. Then the phony children's books. Now this hagiography docuseries. This is why it's so easy for people to hate her. It's always about her.
MichaelW (Richmond, VA)
@Viv There is no Dem nominee yet and Hillary has no job. Everyone toed the line to support the now-incumbent because it cost them more in tweets and political support than not supporting him. The incumbent has turned Republican ideology on its head, cleaving to our enemies, shunning our allies, turning his back fiscal conservatism, and using government handouts to compensate farmers for protectionist anti-free market policies. Being that Hillary is not in public office anymore, it remains an open question as to how she could possibly dispel the notion of being "crooked", since "crooked usually implies using public office to accumulate money, abuse power or escape accountability. She's a citizen now. She has no more obligation to do charity work or teach than you or I, or even an ex-president for that matter. It's also a double standard to chide the self-promotion. Mitt Romney had a documentary come out after he lost. Michelle Obama spent a year touring the world to promote her book. Al Gore used his stature as a former vice president to champion his own pet cause and make a documentary that got an Academy Award. People can and will hate her if they want to, but the hatred seems poorly founded when the standard applied to her and her behavior appears not to apply to literally anyone else in her position. Even calling out her behavior is condescending, like she's a child to be scolded. We are not her mom and she is not ours to command. We need to become ok with that.
Jane (Iowa)
I'll vote for him if he is the nominee - but I told my husband this morning I would be holding my nose while I did so. He has done nothing for the Democratic party and the one Sanders worker that I had an encounter with here in Iowa was the exact opposite of the capable, personable Buttegieg and Warren workers with whom we have had contact. Not sure what everyone sees in him.
Lisa (Nevada)
I'm starting to consider Rick Wilson's advice, priority #1 is voting out Trump and gaining the majority in the Senate. Then we can start having an adult conversation regarding all the the instances in our government that seem to rely on "good faith", instead of an actual set of rules. Here's hoping 2020 produces the largest voter turnout on record, doesn't matter your party affiliation, just want to see Americans exercising their right to vote.
Steve (Medford, MA)
Thank you for this wonderful editorial. I am appalled that Clinton is choosing to say things that will help Trump win if Bernie is the candidate. She is actually willing to take down a former rival and doom the country to four more years of Trump. Shame on her! PS: I am not even a Bernie supporter. I just want the Democratic nominee to beat Trump.
Pauline (London)
Unbelievable. Self-serving. Destructive. Mean. And I voted for her. I have thrown my support behind Bernie because he is accepting, passionate and can't be bought: Qualities best served with an honest heart. He is not always easy, but he is always true to himself, his country and to his journey.
Jasper Lamar Crabbe (Boston, MA)
Proof positive that Ms. Clinton has zero self-awareness. She thought of herself as "to the manor born" when she ran in 2016 only to be usurped by...no need to even name him. Her take on Mr. Sanders mirrors her own track record in public life. She got nothing done, nobody wanted to work with her and, while maybe not a career politician per say, has been wrapped up in politics for 45(!) years. The very things that she thinks makes Mr. Sanders a bad choice are the very things that lost HER the 2016 election.
Kathryn Neel (Maryland)
We continually hear the plea to "get behind whatever democrat becomes the nominee", which is entirely reasonable. Sometimes this plea simply reflects the desire to unite to defeat trump in November. Fair enough. But this oft-repeated edict is just as likely to be used to shut people down and can be just as alienating as unifying, depending on the context in which it is uttered. When 'get behind the nominee' sounds like 'shut up and vote democratic or else it will be your fault if we lose', I think this might keep some people from showing up at the polls. Clinton didn't say she wouldn't support Sanders if he is the nominee. She said it was too early to focus on that question. I don't know what she meant, but I hope she wasn't simply refusing to back Sanders, but was resisting the pressure inherent in the question. Yes, lets get behind the eventual nominee, lets refrain from gratuitous attacks, but lets have a lively debate and allow for strong disagreement. There are bad feelings about whether or not Sanders hurt Clinton and vice versa. But people forget that there was also a belief that the long primary strengthened Clinton by giving her practice and forcing her to focus a bit more on the progressive wing of the party.
John Poag (Kitchener Canada)
According to CNN Sanders has surged in the polls. Hillary's negative comments about him may be as good as an endorsement from a trusted source. She has freedom of speech like any other American, but from here on it would be best if she refrains from commenting about any candidates.
A (NYC)
After all the vitriolic comments, impersonations, actions and policies we’ve had inflicted on the American public by this administration, we’re gonna get our feelings hurt and get judgmental about this comment? Disrupting party unity? Please. HRC can speak her mind, it’s ok, and she does know Bernie a little better than most people.
mzzmo (Hesperia)
@A I hear you. I don't like Bernie either!
WHM (Rochester)
I found Hillarys comments nasty, vindictive and possibly very damaging to the current Democratic race. She and Sanders were serious allies for many years in supporting progressive causes. Why does she choose to attack him now, if not simply to try to make herself relevant again. I was a strong Hillary supporter in the 2016 election and have great respect for her exceptional competence, although I found some of the concerns of Sanders supporters valid (e.g. her penchant for hobnobbing with the wealthy and her effort to monetize her fame). Now I just wish she would go away. The most dramatic thing she has done is resurrect all the concerns of Sanders supporters that he will be opposed by the Democratic party. Sanders brought huge energy and many new voters to the progressive side of US politics, and many of his supporters remain wary of the Democratic party. Hillary is now fanning those flames at a time when progressive candidates need every vote they can get. I understand why she is so vindictive, she has been hammered by Republicans, Russians and Sanders supporters. But she should take the advice of her former supporters and simply sit this one out.
Janet Clary (Merced, CA)
Bernie as a nominee means a second term for Trump. It’s not about policy, it’s about reality. You have to live in la la land to think Sanders can defeat Trump. I am a Dem who will vote for any Dem but Sanders.
Jim (Albany)
@Janet Clary Clinton as a nominee, meant a first term for Trump
KM (Pittsburgh)
@Janet Clary Then Donald Trump thanks your for your support. But your analysis is backwards. Bernie is the only Dem who can defeat Trump.
Karen (Boston)
"Nobody likes him"? More people liked him than liked Hilary in 2016. The NYT and other media refused to cover his successful rallies and the enormous crowds. From her Republican days at Wellesley to now, Hilary has never been a champion of the platforms that made the Democratic party strong. Bernie stands up for the things he -- and we! -- believe in, and always has.
duvcu (bronx in spirit)
@Karen Although it is disturbing for Hillary to have a loose tongue at this time, one cannot ignore that she and Bill were champions of Universal Health Care almost 30 years ago. Republicans AND Democrats gave them an extremely hard time, and a gag order was essentially placed on them regarding the issue. I voted for Bernie in the 2016 primary, but for Hillary in the general. I am still mad the many Bernie supporters who stayed home. I hope this year, they will vote blue no matter who--- this is also about the SCOTUS, and that's where we should be embedded.
Amanda (France)
Maybe Hillary Clinton is being super strategic and trying to get all the swing voters who voted against her to vote for Bernie?
TechieMom (Boston)
I'm a strong democrat and have always viewed Bernie Sanders as a warm, fuzzy, feel good social presence. I don't see much more than that and believe he is wasting his own and others' energy and resources when he can be contributing to solving social issues independent of running for president with such funds. Other candidates have proven themselves in this way. What has he ever solved or help accomplish??? Hillary is telling us like it is, like men do all the time without being criticized as rude. She's smart and can see through nonsense. She is not jeopardizing the democratic race against Trump, and she has enough experience to know this.
Paul (Berkeley)
Ms. Gay writes "As one of Bernie’s younger supporters might say: “Wow. Rude!” As a Democrat of a certain age, I would say of Ms. Clinton's remarks "Cool... and so correct!" Fighting a fire with simply more fire but from a different direction won't move the USA forward; it will only exacerbate the disaster. Ms. Gay only reinforces the old lament "why is youth wasted on the young."
DaveB (Boston, MA)
I voted for Hillary and contributed to her campaign. BUT - she and her husband are the worst things that ever happened to the Democratic party. The incredible sense of entitlement that the two of them radiate is abhorrent to me and others. The two of them specialize in giving the gifts of baseball bats to the republicans so that they can bash democrats at will. Monica, lying to congress, emails, voting for the Iraq war. The two of them have nothing but a "fingers in the wind" mentality, and the courage they possess is akin to a couple of chipmunks (my apologies to chipmunks). And now, the latest gift to the republicans - "Bernie is a bad guy and nobody likes him." Gee, thanks. If anyone ever had doubts about the Clintons loyalty to the party that got them in power, it is now clear that their only allegiance is to themselves - not the democratic party, not to their country, not to any sense of personal integrity.
Diane Brown (Florida)
Amazingly bad "journalism from an obvious novice. Sanders viciousness toward Clinton in the 2016 election is well documented. And now he is doing it again - to Warren and Biden, even having to apologize to Biden for his campaign sending out false reports and doctored video. Clinton is no dummy. She does not want Trump to win, but she saw that Sanders was starting his old tricks and set out to let people know his true character before the first primary election. Ms Gay needs to go read Paul Krugman's opinion on Sanders.
Duane (Denver)
Bernie campaigned hard for Clinton after the convention, something she has conveniently forgotten. Obama was far more critical in 2008, calling out her corporate donors for what it is: corruption. You can find the same critiques of misogyny if you go back and look at the media at the time. However, I welcome Krugman’s style of punditry: it is more obvious than ever that the prevailing dialogue you see on newsstands is beltway politics and utterly divorced from the peoples’ needs.
cb_bob (Carnelian Bay, CA)
I worked in the Nevada caucus/primary for Hillary. I will never forget when Bernie’s campaign people “stole” Hillary’s data base-and of course denied it for a while until they got caught. They continued to undermine her every step of the way even after she got the nomination. Bernie made a few half hearted campaign appearances for her but his followers continued to trash her-thus ensuring Trump’s victory. Hillary is warning us to wake up and see what is happening- Putin is loving this and let’s remember Bernie is NOT a democrat!
Casey (portland)
The more Hillary bashes Sanders the stronger he will become. I'd wear that as a badge of honor if i were Bernie. The Clintons are the worst thing for the democrats and they need to go underground this year.
Meredith (New York)
CNN: Sanders' liberalism -- once considered radical -- is now very much en vogue within the party....The CNN poll shows a big jump since its last survey, in mid-December. The Poll.....shows Biden slowly fading. W. Post: Sanders has gains in support from white voters and male voters, up 10 points from both groups since last month. He has also gained six points with a key group: people who say the most important factor in their vote is beating Trump.
EmmettC (NYC)
Will Bernie's supporters commit to support to any Democrat who wins the nomination?
Peter90 (Houston)
@EmmettC Probably not. You are assuming that all Bernie supporters are Democrats . They are not.
BP (New Hampshire)
While I agree that Hillary is merely being an imp, her influence over the party is nearly irrelevant except within the needs of the media for a story...she has devolved into a brat. I still empathize with what must be deep horrific pain at losing to such a feral creature as Trump, but this does not excuse her from acting out like a petulant teen. She needs to disappear until the current storms have passed and try to reinvent herself or she is of no more use as a political, or social, leader in this land.
Mike (NY)
"Mrs. Clinton, You Already Beat Bernie Sanders." Too funny. This from the crowd that STILL insists the 2016 nomination was somehow stolen from St. Bernard. And why would she commit to supporting someone in 2020 who isn't even a Democrat? The Bernie crowd is something else!
eduKate (Ridge, NY)
The headline says it all. Hillary has been playing the sore loser since she dissed Barack Obama by declining to attend his inauguration celebration and instead holding her own party for HER supporters. She continues to display a self-centeredness even in the face of the possible re-election of Donald Trump. I hope that enough people tell her that they don't care what she thinks because her "spoiler" attitude can only feed divisiveness. I'm speaking to the press as well. Isn't Hillary old news?
BB HERNANDEZ (NY)
Let's put Bernie Sander's policy proposals aside for a moment. What is left? An arrogant, officious, ego driven, absolutist whom nobody likes. HRC was not wrong.
GeorgeX (Philadelphia)
Err,no, she didn't beat Sanders. The Democratic Party establishment did that FOR her. Besides, she went on to lose where it mattered. Hillary Clinton should simply shut up and ride into the sunset. I say this a a liberal.
pedigrees (SW Ohio)
"Nobody likes him." I do. And I vote.
Joe yoh (Brooklyn)
Bravo to Hillary for being authentic. No to groupthink and bowing to "consensus".
Carl Yaffe (Rockville, Maryland)
@Joe yoh Presumably you also applaud Trump for being "authentic".
Milwaukee (Wisconsin)
Considering she ignored Wisconsin, I wish she would just be quiet and go away.
CatPerson (Columbus, OH)
A lot of people don't like you, Mrs. Clinton, and some of them voted for Trump. Ponder that for a minute.
meloop (NYC)
Ms Gay should know that even as Sanders played at pro Clinton politics in the 2016 election, that many far laft members of the CLinton organization, "conspired" to vote against their boss. Many were so un educated about how our electoral system works that they were sure whatever the NYTimes said was gospel truth and feared Mrs Clinton being elected with a huge and overwhelming majority, sweeping her into the White House where she would continue to work as a middle of the road Democrat. As a result, alll of the votes that went to Communists, to write in votes for Sanders and other third party killjoys, acted to help elect Donald Truymp. The very people who effected his election were not Republican voters-they were angry Democrats on the left who could not get past Ms Clinton actually "breaking bread" with members of Goldman Sachs.I am not comparing Mrs CLinton to Jesus, I am stating the unhappy fact,(which most Democrats desire to suppress), that the Trump election was effected by furious , far left Democratic voters who tried to prevent their candidate's ship from sinking by pounding new and bigger holes in her bottom to let out the water they themselves had had allowed in.
Lia Bz (MI)
I did some fact checking against her statement "he[Bernie] got nothing done." The Center for Effective Law Making shows that in the past 10 years (except for 2013-2014), Bernie's legislative performance has been incredibly low. He has been consistently underperforming compared to other legislators. I really like him, still do. In fact, I donate hundreds of dollars to him in the 2016 primaries. But my main concern back then had been how much we can actually accomplish. Of course, getting progressive candidates elected into other offices is a great start. The second thing is. Bernie just had a heart attack, and despite Biden claiming that "age is just a number", the next president has to deal with so many issues and Trump is not going to make the transition easy. I'm concerned that Bernie wouldn't have the stamina demanded by the office of POTUS. Here is link to for anyone who's interested in looking into congresspeople's performance: https://thelawmakers.org/find-representatives#/
TY (TX)
Mrs. Clinton, You Already Beat Bernie Sanders. Trump Is the Opponent Now. You might want to tell Bernie that as he's been compelled to trash the very Party he claims to want to represent as the standard-bearer in 2020.
WalterZ (Ames, IA)
“Nobody likes him,” Mrs. Clinton said of Senator Bernie Sanders. Clarification: Nobody in "the club" in which average citizens do not belong.
gigantor21 (USA)
Between this and her bizzare food fight with Tulsi, Hilary has been doing quite a bit to show how she managed to losed to a gropey, racist game show host like Trump. It's especially galling for her to not commit to voting for Bernie after spending years growsing about Bernie's perceived lack of support for her in 2016. This, despite how he did FAR more to help her then than she helped Obama in 2008 after their bitter primary fight. And he didn't need the promise of a cabinet post to do so. The sooner the Democrats excise the Clintons and their ilk from the party, the better.
LS (FL)
During the debates Senator Kamala Harris called out Gabbard as an apologist for Bashar al-Assad. When Anderson Cooper pressed Gabbard during an interview on whether Assad was a torturer and a murderer she refused to say. Same thing in her interviews with Chris Cuomo and Steve Schmidt, who called her dishonest. Although Clinton never mentioned Gabbard by name, I'm glad she spoke out just like I'm glad Paul Krugman spoke out about Sanders' weaponized Yuppies we're all familiar with as his "Bros" -- the militantly ageist supporters of the oldest man to ever run for president!
Chris G (Ashburn Va)
Punching Left has been a favorite tactic of neoliberal/neocon Democrats since Bill Clinton ran for president. These tactics are becoming rapidly obsolete as 40 years of a choice between Republican and Republican-lite governance has created a surging Left. A Left that has learned to punch back. Bernice is surging and the establishment Dems are in a panic because he represents an existential threat to their cozy relationship with the Wall Street, fossil fuel, Pharma and MIC donor class. I expect attacks like Hillary’s to continue. As Gramsci said: “The old world is dying and @ new world has yet to be born.”
jen (East Lansing, MI)
Interesting. The article states “They want to beat Donald Trump this November. Full stop”. Yes. And the person who came closest to that was Hillary Clinton. Not you Ms. Gay. Not Bernie. Not any of the Bernie supporters, many of whose visceral hatred for Hillary (and Warren) befuddles me. Currently the person doing the most damage to the Democratic Party is Bernie Sanders and his Bernie Bros. Full stop.
Lorrie (Anderson, CA)
Nothing like a woman scorned. Do you suppose that Hillary Clinton is projecting her own dismal degree of likeability on Bernie Sanders. Of all the low, catty, venomous attacks on her former political opponent, this really takes the cake. What a shameful display of pent up resentment. I did not care for Hillary Clinton when she was running for President, but what was then disapproval has now become actual dislike and disrespect. I remember Obama remarking that "Hillary was likeable enough," alluding to the fact that she was in fact NOT generally likeable. Look in the mirror Hillary and take care of your own personal issues without avenging your unhappiness on Bernie Sanders, I am sure you remember that he supported you in your Democratic nomination for the Presidency. It would appear that your political career has reached its culmination. You might try being gracious in your retirement.
Tom (France)
She's probably right. She had the se problem back in 2016.
liza (Chicago)
She did say that she will support the nominee and you knew she would. But instead the media has to go crazy over her every utterance. A lot of us don't like Bernie. Trump will wipe the floor with him. Hillary knows it - and evidently so does the NYT editorial board. The editorial board doesn't have room to be criticizing anyone these days. And Mara... there was nothing pointless about Clinton's comments about Tulsi Gabbard. She was spot on then, too.
mildred rein Ph.D. (chestnut hill, Mass.)
Now we know WHY we disliked Hillary Clinton and why the strong dislike of her made her fail to get elected.
Area Man (Iowa)
Hillary Clinton has now closed the case on her own legacy. Whatever good she once did for the people who elected her is now in the past. She's going to the grave embittered and out of touch. Worse, really. She's entering the twilight of her career at war with the general population.
fast/furious (Washington, DC)
Hillary is amazingly self-absorbed. I've met her & supported her & believe her to be an intelligent, capable person. But her behavior since the election, her long "excuses tour," blaming everyone but herself for her loss, is embarrassing. She & President Clinton recently held a national tour w/ very expensive tickets & eventually bailed because they couldn't sell enough tickets. The Clintons are worth (estimate) $100 million. When will their money grubbing stop? Hillary raking in over $20 million for paid speeches the year before her presidential campaign probably doomed her chances. Can't she take that money & go enjoy retirement? Bill Clinton charges tens of millions for his commercial ventures, like his "ambassadorship" for a for-profit university. Can't they just go away & keep quietly selling themselves to the highest bidders? When are they ever going to take responsibility for their behavior? Her campaign was a nightmare. That's why she lost. Not Bernie Sanders and James Comey. Bill Clinton is an intelligent and gifted man who squandered his presidency with his revolting personal behavior. This behavior likely set the stage for the defeat of Al Gore - a brilliant, admirable man who would have made a fine president - & would not have started a tragic, pointless war with Iraq. The Clintons should get off the stage. They only serve to remind us that although they have enormous natural gifts, they lack the character to be national leaders.
KJ (Tennessee)
@fast/furious I agree with everything but your take on Al Gore. He was always in it for the money. You'll notice that he has been spending a lot of it on environmentally-unfriendly ways, including monstrous properties, but I'm sure he's special and God wants him to be happy.
Bob (Albuquerque, NM)
It is also of no help that Mr Sanders savages and lies about his competitors. I think Ms Clinton brings up a good point when she says he could only get 1 senator to support his bid: that shows that his colleagues weren't feeling the Bern.
Ed Watters (San Francisco)
"Mrs. Clinton, You Already Beat Bernie Sanders*. Trump Is the Opponent Now" * She beat Bernie with considerable help from the DNC and the corporate-media.
David L, Jr. (Jackson, MS)
She said she wasn't ready to commit to endorsing him YET, much as he waited -- and waited -- to endorse her, regularly pushing her to adopt positions that may have cost her the presidency. She routinely moved leftward, which no doubt hurt her in some suburban areas (soccer moms aren't usually for socialism). Why is it that centrists are asked to concede to the Left, as if moving in that direction is ipso facto the "right thing to do"? I'd prefer a situation where the fringes bend inward, rather than the other way 'round. This dynamic, where the center bends toward the fringe, is at play in both parties; and although I understand why, it's nevertheless unhealthy. We constantly hear that it's time for change (every election). But this change that's on offer, even if it means well -- and which kind doesn't? -- is mostly hot air that, if implemented, far from making things better, would engender problems that are worse than those it intends to cure. Republicans didn't want to endorse Trump and some would have baulked at Cruz. Though Sanders is no Trump, many liberals don't want a fellow traveler as the nominee. Sanders's socialism isn't even a real thing. It's a fantasy that people who are upset with reality, who hate the private enterprise system and the supposed greed it engenders, need to believe in for emotional reasons. "One day the world shall be better!" https://www.wsj.com/articles/bernie-sanders-wont-endorse-hillary-clinton-for-now-1466798302
Walter (France)
Remember this all you Hillary Clinton supporters: If I would have held my nose and voted - as some of you wanted me to - I would have voted for Donald Trump. The reason? Clinton was more of a warmonger than Trump. I feared if she got in, we would have been in WWIII by March 2017. (Check out her comments and commitment to a no-fly zone for Russia over Syria.) I am proud of the fact I voted for Jill Stein in 2016. This time I donated to Jay Inslee's campaign early on and then donated to Elizabeth Warren when Inslee dropped out. I am leery of Bernie Sanders because of his long-time support of the F-35 fighter bomber - the biggest boondoggle in the history of the world. However, I will vote for either Sanders or Warren. I will NOT vote for anybody else. I don't give a rip about the DNC (Dinosaur Natioinal Committee) or their proclivities. They gave us a losing candidate last time (Clinton) and in 2008 they gave us a candidate (Obama) who stabbed us in the back multiple times.
Philip Brown (Australia)
This abrasive aggression; this sense of entitlement; this divisiveness: are all reasons that"saint" Hillary lost to Trump in 2016. Trump was the second worst candidate on the night; "saint" Hillary was the worst. Hopefully the Democrat Party has moved on further and Faster than Ms Clinton.
John (Hartford)
Ironic that the Bernie Brothers after routinely slagging off Clinton during the 2016 campaign and threatening not to vote for her are now claiming victimization.
Umesh Patil (Cupertino, CA)
With Bernie as Dem Nominee, Trump the 'opponent' will Four More Years. Come to senses and smell some coffee to throw away the spell of 'M4A, Wealth Tax and free lunch all cross'. Bernie Socialism = Total Route of Democrats + 4 more years of Trump.
k (california)
You're twisting what she said - I thought you were better than this. Disappointing. Of course HRC will support the Democratic nominee - on HER OWN timeline. Her ACTUAL words: “I’m not going to go there yet,”
Chacay (Los Angeles)
Great! And a very personable article...It couldn't have been said in a more gracious way. Most of the democrats, let me add this little grain of salt, dont like Hilary, and now worst than ever.... The motivations for her documentary are just an example of the worst of feelings that cannot be contained by a politician like her! Time to be a Granny now if you can... Thank you Mara
Tom Mariner (Long Island, New York)
Bernie had the perfect comeback for Hillary's dig at his elect-ability -- he turned it into a self deprecating joke, which is as much as the comment deserved. Hey big ego politicians -- it ain't about you, it is about us who elect you. Learn from Bernie and slap those who insult you down by emphasizing (and laughing about) your frailties, real or imagined.
Bill Dan (Boston)
In 2016 the Russians sought to create division in the Democratic Party and it was one of many factors in Clinton’s defeat The irony: Clinton seeks to create division in the Party in 2020. The Russians have to be laughing
Stan B (Santa Fe, NM)
Thank you, so much, for saying the things you did. And you said them so beautifully......both Clintons have done so much damage to this country that now would be a good time for them to withdraw from public life.
Esposito (Rome)
"Nobody likes him," says Hilary Clinton of Bernie Sanders. It's a schoolyard kind of thing to say about someone, isn't it? Especially when it comes from someone who was unfairly and inordinately judged based on her low score on the likability scale. Mara Gay's piece is spot on. Why now? Is it just another ego supernova looking to create some heat for attention? It's not just Mrs. Clinton and it's not just trump. I, for one, am sick of all the me-me-me careerism on display in the media while the "United" States and its Constitution slowly dissolves before our eyes, sick of the next new timely blockbuster book announcement, sick of the infantile twitter slings and arrows and the ever-ready botox avatars, male and female, we see lined up for their turn on the TV News dais. Is that all there is? Ego and the God-only-knows consequences of all those egos? Why do I think the media conglomerates want to re-elect trump?
Virginia (Cape Cod, MA)
This editorial infuriated me. Keep in mind that Trump might well be president because so many Sanders supporters stayed home and pouted rather than vote in 2016. Yes, after the convention, Sanders said that we should do everything we can to elect Clinton. Ms. Gay has no way of knowing that Hillary Clinton won't do the same after the 2020 convention. Perhaps she's doing the responsible thing, in fact, in NOT imposing her opinion on who she believes should be the nominee. Instead, Gay rudely ascribes to her a motive Ms. Gay has no possible way of knowing, that she is bitter and lashing out. How gross. Perhaps, Ms. Gay, she knows something you don't, that Bernie Sanders cannot defeat Donald Trump (which I believe is the case), but she won't make that kind of declarative statement, for good reason. How many times have we heard, after the fact and when it's too late, "Hillary was right?" Maybe people should start listening to her. What is rude is declaring the motives of another's comments with no basis. I can think of a lot of even responsible reasons why she spoke as she did, none of which involve bitterness. You insult her while criticizing her for being critical of Democrats (and while defending Sanders, who is only a Dem when it suits him). And btw, The last Dem standard bearer is Obama. He warned Dems to not move too far left, or they will lose. Sounds like a "Don't vote for Bernie" warning to me. Where's your column about how bitter Obama is?
Barry Newberger (Austin, TX)
Actually Mrs. Clinton, nobody wants your “authentic unvarnished views”. What those of us who supported you want is for you to accept your loss gracefully, take responsibility for a poorly run campaign, and retire from public life.
Linda Oliver (Nashville, TN)
Hillary Clinton is allowed freedom of speech just like anyone else. She, and anyone else, is allowed to express her view anywhere, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, What'sApp, the town square, anywhere. Personally, I'd rather she hadn't, because now some Republicans are chanting "fight, fight, fight" and hoping to reignite the resentments of Sanders and Clinton Democrats, anything to foster division. However, fact is, she did. It doesn't matter to me who she or anyone else does or doesn't like. There is no way I am voting for Trump or anyone who is not a Democrat.
blgreenie (Lawrenceville NJ)
Sanders has slipped by the scrutiny given to others running for the Democratic nomination. His stock, boilerplate routine on TV and the stump precludes close examination of what kind of person he is. His Bernie Bros play defense for him in comment sections like this and on social media aggressively attacking those who question his motives. What Hillary Clinton has done and Elizabeth Warren, earlier, is necessary to pry open an understanding of a man who wraps himself up in programs not be be budged from while remaining opaque about how his personal qualities would influence his leadership.
Andrew (Washington DC)
It's it better that she's saying these things now before the Iowa caucus begins? Plus, most voters don't care what she says. It's either the Democrat or four more years of insanity.
Tru4evr (CA)
She is worried that if Bernie wins, it will expose the fact that he would have beaten Trump in 2016.
R (USA)
Its sad to see there seem to be lots of people in the establishment Democrat crowd, like Secretary Clinton, who would prefer a 2nd Trump term to a 1st Sanders one. I guess this shouldn't be too surprising since Clinton, and much of the Dem leadership who run in the Davos circles, would personally benefit from another term of Trump's tax policies, but for the American working class, who the Democratic party are supposed to represent, it would be a disaster.
Trini (NJ)
Seems like there is some sort of conspiracy among the democratic party insiders to go all out against Sanders now that he appears to be surging. The old ways did not work in 2016 and they will not work now. Let the best democratic candidate succeed and get the democratic nomination. And please stop this negativity Hillary Clinton. We get enough of this on a daily basis otherwise. Are you saying that if you were president this is what we would be hearing. Same difference?
Bryan (Washington)
Amazingly, Hillary Clinton now is doing a great imitation of Bernie Sanders in 2016. She sounds is vindictive, resentful and not helpful in unifying for the Democrats. Sanders excelled in this type of talk three years ago. Clinton can say whatever she feels. She just needs to be prepared for the push back and loss of respect for her that will be inevitable should Trump win reelection.
Steve Bruns (Summerland)
@Bryan You are confusing the Bernie of 2016 with the Hillary of 2008. Bernie was much more supportive of Hillary than Hillary was of Barack. Not that it really matters since no candidate controls how others vote and to pretend that they do is simply lame ad hominem.
David (Florida)
@Bryan She probably won't care if Trump wins again anyway. Then the Troll can come back out from under the bridge where she resides and publish another book to give her otherwise unemployable daughter something to do for a while again....
Gary (Midwest)
The problem with "party unity" at this point in the election, is it sort of leaves Democratic voters with the idea that whomever they nominate has an equal chance of winning - "everyone" is willing to support them. Unfortunately, the surest way to insure another four years of Donald Trump (or maybe Mike Pence, if we're lucky) is to nominate Sen. Sanders. Ms. Clinton's refusal to say she'll support Sen. Sanders may seem petty and vindictive (and I'm sure Ms. Clinton can be petty and vindictive, when it comes to politics) but she may also have the best interests of the country at heart. Sitting out there in New York, where the Democratic nominee will win your electoral votes, no matter who that nominee is, "party unity" may seem like a virtue. But out here in "swing state" country, the party needs to nominate someone other than Sen. Sanders if it wants to win in November.
QueenyQuinn (San Diego)
Bernie Sanders was a huge reason why Hillary lost. Despite what the Times says here, Bernie quit too late and did not give her his full support. The ONLY reason I would vote for Sanders would be if he became the Democrats nominee. The women The NY Times has endorsed are excellent picks. I am still not clear on the logic of those who dislike Hillary because her husband purportedly messed around.
Casey (portland)
@QueenyQuinn hillary blew that all by herself. she should have never been the nominee. if you have to rig the nomination what does that say about you?
John (Cactose)
Party unity can only be achieved through a common purpose that extends beyond just defeating Trump. There are simply too many voices, causes and perspectives in the Democratic tent to assume that people will just fall in line, in particular those moderates, centrists and Independents who are looking to vote Democrat, but have serious reservations about some of the candidates still in the Primary. I'm only speaking for myself (a registered Independent) but Bernie Sanders vision of America just doesn't align with my own and I can't see myself voting for him. I think, perhaps, Hillary is trying to tell us all that electability does matter and Sanders just doesn't qualify.
Carol-Ann (Pioneer Valley)
Question, if I were to make my way through all 1525, and counting, comments, why would it be that most of the really derogatory ones directed towards Sec Clinton are coming from men? Is this just another indication that the largest political party in the United States is the Misogyny Party? The beauty of the party is, no one need declare one's colors. Maybe what Sanders keeps harping is true - a woman can't be elected president - and we have him and his acolytes to thank for that. Be they male or female.
CP (NJ)
My well of Good Will toward Hillary Clinton has run dry. She didn't get it in 2016 and she isn't getting it now; her sour grapes may well sink the Democratic ship. I am disgusted with her lack of sensitivity to what is really needed now: unity, strength and support. I know she has the First Amendment right to speak but that also includes the right not to speak if that is what it takes to advance the common good.
Charles (New York)
well crafted piece! bravo for saying what needed to be said
newshound (westchester)
Oh yeah, Bernie and his supporters were all in on Hillary in 2016.
Ruby (Paradise)
OF COURSE the comments about Hillary Clinton are misunderstood and nasty. When will Bernie’s spell upon his supporters be broken? Any woman who still supports Bernie after his record of misogyny is misguided. He has NOT addressed his supporters, the Bernie Bros,!and asked them to stand down. Any woman ho has been targeted by one of these lunatics can tell you how scary they can be. Not that different than the most rabid Trumpers. How is that not divisive? The he-man woman haters club is, by nature, divisive. I don’t see ol’ Grandpa Sanders telling the kids in the back seat to cut it out or he’ll “turn this car around and go back home.” Hillary is a private citizen. She has as much right to speak out on what is true (& scary) as anyone else. She has a duty to women to point out the disgusting misogyny rampant in his campaign and those who follow him. Bernie doesn’t apologize for his mistakes. He revels in his supporters’ misguided passion. Look - she was right about EVERYTHING that Trump & his underlings would do to savage our democracy. A majority of the country listened to her. Those who did not voted for Bernie, Jill Stein and Trump. And here we are. The only reason that people find her divisive & distasteful is because the media has pummeled her for decades. Including The NY Times. She didn’t run for President this time. She is no longer in politics. Arrogant Bernie did, and his supporters will do everything they can to make sure Trump wins...again. Wake up, people!
Viv (.)
@Ruby Just because she can say anything she wants doesn't mean that she should do so. Or that people owe her a civil response in return. Read the Hollywood Reporter article in full. It makes it clear that the Hulu series was her idea, to monetize unaired footage of her career and get somebody to create a documentary about her. She fully knew (and agreed) that the series would air at the start of the primary season - right when the focus should be on the candidates instead of her. Yet she did it anyway. The biggest irony of her statement against Sanders is that all Republicans except for one refused to take part in the docuseries. Newt Gingrich is even quoted as saying that he'd rather jam needles in his eyes than participate. This kerfuffle is nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt on her behalf, to get people to watch a hagiography. I doubt it will turn out better than her "fireside chat" tour. More than half the venue seats were embarrassingly empty. Evidently few people outside NYC were willing to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars to hear her "reminisce".
Grant (Boston)
Mara Gay apparently doesn’t comprehend the damage Bernie Sanders has done to the Democrat Party. Bernie Sanders has destroyed the Party and caused the defeat of Hilary Clinton, not absurd Russian collusion nonsense. Senator Sanders is not a Democrat. He is a socialist/communist and Hilary’s portrayal of the conniving Sanders is spot on. This career politician and charlatan has accomplished nothing, and he is despised by everyone outside the college campus and the media. Mara Gay apparently is in lock step with any Democrat regardless of their policies or integrity, as she like Sanders is supportive of one-party rule and the destruction of democracy. Her naivete and collectivist mentality is like that of the gullible college student unable to think independently as that no longer has merit within the Left agenda. And for a dose of reality, Sanders didn’t support Hilary in 2016. He sat on his hands during the convention and was his normal contentious self throughout.
OLG (NYC)
@Grant I think you have it reversed, it was Hillary who ruined the Democratic Party, trending it into soft core republicanism, including her divisiveness and inability to understand the needs of the working class.
JM (MA)
I liked HRC until as senator she cosponsored a constitutional amendment to make flag burning (a genuine danger to our democratic republic) illegal. Then I realized she was a phony.
gmgwat (North)
Best headline (and advice, Hillary) of the month.
Silly (Rabbit)
Thank you, Hillary, for endorsing Bernie so strongly! Everybody in the country except the suburban wine and Xanax crowd hates you as a person, so coming out against Bernie like that just makes him more popular - especially after he campaigned so hard for you in 2016 after you won the nomination. Look at that new CNN poll, the more you hate, the more he wins!!!!
Danielle (Boston)
I believe her title is Secretary.
Jim (Albany)
@Danielle not since 2013.
Jim (Albany)
not since 2013 It is “Senator Sanders,” though.
David Klebba (PA)
We see Trump’s lack of self-awareness. Will the Clintons ever go away?
srwdm (Boston)
Part of Hillary's Bernie-ire is the fact that she and the Clinton-machine that ran the Democratic National Committee (DNC) got "caught"—overtly discriminating against Bernie Sanders during the 2016 primaries.
Hinckley51 (Sou’wester, ME)
Let us not forget how Hillary and the DNC (via Debbie Wasserman Schultz) literally COLLUDED to handicap Sanders' campaign - to "win" (not!). Despite that, Bernie "not even a Democrat" Sanders went to bat (hard!) for the unjust winner of that 2016 primary....and THIS is how he's treated? As vindictive and bitter as she obviously is, I can't imagine Hillary wants Warren to be "the 1st"....but it sure looks like some form of underhanded collusion all over again. The Swamp is relentless!
jrd (ny)
This self-admitted lousy campaigner, already rejected in 2008 by Democrats in favor of a guy whose middle name was "Hussein", looked at her high negatives among both independent voters and Democrats disgusted by the Clinton/Obama toadying to Wall Street, and still decided she was the nation's best hope. And, alas, the Democratic party agreed. Then she further concluded that her preferred opponent was Donald J. Trump, because she wouldn't stand a chance against anyone else. So nothing to disturb that outcome. And today we see the results of it. Of course, you can blame Putin or Bernie Sanders. Or the tooth fairy. Blame anyone, that is, but Hillary.
Nicola (Houston)
It’s “Secretary Clinton,” and she doesn’t owe Bernie anything.
BGB (San Mateo, CA 94403)
Nobody likes him? Hillary, a little self awareness is needed on your part and suggests that you need to ask the most pertinent question about yourself and the election. “How come so many people gritted their teeth and voted for Trump?". Could it be they didn't like you?
Lisa (Chicago)
Clinton has not been gracious in defeat and Obama has been too quiet in retirement
Steve Bruns (Summerland)
@Lisa. Clinton and Obama are more in line with the corporate employers of the Republican Party and both, along with the DNC stand to benefit greatly financially by another Trump term. Those tax cuts were awesome for the owners of the US as well as for their senior employees in government. Corporate Democrats are in that sweet spot of all the benefits but none of the blame.
Keith (Merced)
I'm looking for a candidate who believes an imperial presidency brings us closer to the warning Patrick Henry wrote to James Madison, "I smelt a rat in Philadelphia, tending toward the monarchy." Trump is trying to be a 4 or 8 year monarch at our peril, and Clinton's sour grapes at Bernie won't do her or us any good. She certainly proved the rules don't apply to her when the NY Times wrote Clintons Did Not Obtain Permits to Renovate Their New Chappaqua Home just before the election. I hope she doesn't miss any other chances to keep her mouth shut.
dibah (Canada)
"It's the gracious thing to do", Hillary. Goodness gracious! Hillary and grace? May I start dreaming about the Donald and truth? Or humility? Or decency? Or... Or...?
Jurassic knockabout (Oregon)
Reluctantly, I admit, but I did vote for HRC, even tho I supported Bernie. But, Hils, baby, you lost at least as much because of what you didn't do, like show up in the midwest. I would agree that Bernie isn't much of a team player, but was the DNC, at any point? You need to let go of all the finger pointing, take responsibility, I know you can do it & be a team player yourself. By all means attack the orange fol-de-rol, but the rest of us would like someone else next year, please?
CD (Ann Arbor)
Hey Hillary, Thanks for your service, but PLEASE, if you can't say anything kind or helpful about ANY of the democratic contenders please just don't say anything at all. We are in serious trouble in this country. All those who want Trump gone need to get on the same stinkin' page!
Scott Kennedy (Portland)
Dear Ms. Clinton, You lost. To DONALD TRUMP. ‘Nobody likes him.’ Irony is dead.
Michael Shammas (New York)
Great piece.
Diane L Edge (San Diego)
I find Bernie unbearable. A presidential election between The Clown and the The Frown would be appalling. Don't understand his appeal but maybe that's because I paid my college loans off.
HFDRU (Tucson)
HRC wants Trump to win. If he loses in November her legacy will be she could not beat a reality show con man. She does not want to be the only candidate in history to lose to a fool. However she has nothing to worry about. Trump will win an a landslide this time. Please stop with all the arguments that she won the popular vote. You do not need the popular vote to win in our form of democracy.
Martha Hulbert (Woolwich, Maine)
Among those who I could care less about is Hillary Clinton. She was an ineffective candidate who made a host of bad decisions. Why the NYT feels there’s value in quoting anything she says is beyond understanding. Further, her political savvy measured beside the likes of Senator Warren feels like 20th century status quo.
Scottapottomus (Right Here On The Left)
I’ve never liked HRC. As a result, I voted for Bernie in our State primary. When HRC won the nomination, however, I of course voted for her. HRC’s petulant and peevish sniping at this point is just obnoxious. Fact Check: -She is a career politician. -She lost to DJT (losing the election means she lost, notwithstanding the popular vote). -She is vehemently disliked and even loathed by scores of millions. -She has an air of entitlement that smells worse than a dumpster full of hot garbage in July. To HRC: Please go away quietly. Enjoy the dozens of millions of dollars you’ve been paid by trading on your government “service.” But just go away.
M.A.M. (Louisville)
So many Bernie Bros once again following his lead and attacking Hillary Clinton with their comments. He was her worst foe and did everything he could to undermine her campaign until the very end when we all knew she was our only chance to beat the GOP. Sanders is very much a part of why we have Trump as president. Now he strikes again, attacking -with lies- Biden, probably the Dems only chance to defeat Trump. Do they really believe that in a country that elected DT voters are going to magically turn to this (pseudo) socialist Sanders? A man who has used the Democratic party for his ego, not thinking of the country. Have they forgotten the very red South and states like WI, PA, FL, Ohio, Iowa....? Wake up! Hillary is doing us a favor reminding us who he really is!! Read Susan Bordo's "The Destruction of Hillary Clinton".
JAB (Daugavpils)
The Clinton's mission is to protect Wall Street's millionaires/billionaires just the same as Biden's. Bernie, Warren are a threat to Wall Street; a minor threat but a threat that Blankfein, Dimon, etc will not tolerate!
unreceivedogma (Newburgh)
I find it interesting that Mz Clinton’s attacks on Bernie come hot on the heels of the smear coordinated on behalf of Warren by CNN’s Jess McIntosh - former communications director for Hilary’s 2016 campaign - and Abby Phillip.
Charles Rogers (Hudson Ohio)
God Bless her heart Hiliary has been carrying a grudge aginst all who opposed her assention to the presidency, In case you haven't been keeping up, no one is exempt. Jill Stein the Green party Presidential candidate who can not even get on the debate stage. Tulsi Gabbard a vetern citizen who was the only member to of the DNC to endorse Sanders, Oh how dare she! The only person spared it seems is Trump, I am waiting for her to attack Joe and Warren. She had Your endorsement, the DNC did every thing it could to ensure she won the election. She had a light weight for an opponent. The Fact is that Sanders and many who voted for him spoke for her and tried to help her win the election. She did not do enough to win. Her attacts on other folks is her way of telling all of us it is not her fault. By the nature of her attacts it is not Trump, not Bill, not the Russian Hackers. Certainly it was not hers!!!!! Chuck from Ohio
elmueador (Boston)
I understand that she's still mad, her lack of (even pretend-) graciousness and good humor permeated her career and was one of the reasons she was so hopeless as a retail politician. (She didn't learn a thing from her husband.) It's over, Hill. Time to shut up and be a good soldier. "Likable enough" didn't cut it then and it doesn't help her legacy if treacherous Trumplestilzkin will be sitting at the Resolute for another 4 years.
American2020 (USA)
I don't think Clinton has ever owned her 2016 loss. All I've heard from her is ego and denial. Her campaign made very serious errors and yes, she had some serious October surprises to deal with however, I remember when the "basket of deplorables" remark was made public, a very savvy commentator said the first rule in politics is you never criticize the voters. I knew then that Clinton would lose. Clinton was and still is her own worst enemy. Her pretense that she was just everyday folks was so obviously a sham. She should have been herself: a brassy, know it all, pushy, smart as a whip presidential candidate who knew when to keep her mouth shut. Alas, she faked it. And we have Donny. Clinton blew it and she's still bitter and blowing it. Zip it, Hillary.
Jolton (Ohio)
What is the point of this editorial? The original article spelled all of this out already and commenters, whether Sanders or Clinton supporters, fully vented their spleens. So this just feels like a clickbait-seeking redux. Especially since Clinton apologized within hours of the quote being reported on. The only thing this editorial does is lend credence to the conspiracy theories that “MSM” wants to sow division among Dems.
Michael Walker (California)
I am a lifelong Democrat, a pink-diaper baby at that. (My father described himself politically as a "Catholic socialist.") I was ready to vote for Clinton in 2016 until Bernie showed up and I lost interest in Clinton. Then she, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Tom Perez engineered one of the greatest election robberies in American history. I have no respect whatever for Hillary Clinton. I wish, for the sake of the party, she would keep a dignified silence. She alienated many in the Democratic Party and her swinging wildly like this does not increase our chances for success. Ms Clinton, please step down.
Freddy (wa)
it sounds like sour grapes. Just when you'd think Hilary would have the good sense to present a united front, she thrust her imperious character into the fray. When will she be content to just go home and sing to herself in the shower?
Wende (South Dakota)
Mrs. Clinton, those of us who care for our country at this moment of existential crisis, know that the most important thing we can ever do, probably ever in our lives, is to vote blue no matter who come November. Your peevish, petty and personally vindictive attack on Bernie is uncalled for, unnecessary and unproductive. Who knows what damage you have wrought. That old adage, “if you can’t say something nice...” was never more apropos. If you cannot, just be quiet. Be quiet!
Deborah (San Francisco)
Stop attacking Hillary. She’s entitled to have her opinion, and to voice it.
KM (Pittsburgh)
@Deborah And we're entitled to attack her for it, since it was a stupid thing to say which only helps Trump.
Lauren (NC)
Just in case you wonder where it all went wrong when Trump gets sworn in this time next year - well just come back to this comment section. We are eating ourselves alive. Such hateful rhetoric.
Willy P (Puget Sound, WA)
What, Hillary's still blaming the man who campaigned so Vigorously for her, for her loss four years ago? Wow. Her bitterness is . . . Sad. Just sad.
MB (W DC)
Will the Clintons never go away? Is the spotlight that important to their being?
Walking Man (Glenmont, NY)
Ego....it is an incredibly powerful thing. Soothing that ego is more important to Hillary than four more years of Trump. Look at Obama. He is the most popular Democrat alive today. He didn't lose to anyone. He could go public and put his finger on the scale. But he does not. He sees the bigger prize. He was smart enough to know....and still smart enough to see....that you can try to achieve the ideal goal and fall short and achieve nothing. Or you can try and hit the sweet spot and inch along toward the goal. Get as many on your side without alienating enough people to cause you to fail. Rather than bring along voters to the Democratic camp, all Hillary accomplished was reminding voters why they couldn't vote for her in the first place. She is a politician, not unlike many, who never looks at failure as "What did I do wrong", but , instead asks "Why did you wrong me?" and constantly looks for payback. Payback that will get you absolutely nothing. Let it go, Hillary. And go forth and do something good for the world. You will feel so much better if you do.
Marie (UK)
It's pretty sad that even now people, including the nytimes editorial board are ready to hop on and criticise Hillary Clinton for the audacity of having an opinion just to defend a senator who, as Former Secretary Clinton points out, hasn't accomplished much. It's still okay to bash the woman instead of looking at the fiber of what she says and also examined why someone like Clinton, who has known these things about Sanders for a long time, is speaking up now. Perhaps it isn't a "personal vendetta" as all of the bloodthirsty anti-Hillary crowd wants, and perhaps it is indeed because she is worried about the integrity of the DNC. Sanders and Gabbard have voted against party lines and in support (or at least not in condemnation of) things that help Trump. Both have ties to Kremlin-like fanbases that rabidly attack any criticism, even when it's completely founded, such as Warren plainly stating the truth about his sexist remarks. Even with others backing her in reporting his sexist remarks, the dark belly of the Bernie internet came in hard to defend his purity, even though the man is far from pure, and even further from being an actual democratic candidate. You know what else is tired, nytimes? Continuing to publish this spewed hatred of someone who isn't running for president anymore. We get it. You still hate her. You still can't stand her. I'd say that means you're more threatened that Sanders is as weak as she says than anything else.
OLG (NYC)
Dear Hillary, please exit to the RIGHT! You and Bill had your 15 minutes in the limelight, your past due date is long gone. Goodbye, now and forever more.
John (Woodbury, NJ)
Has it occurred to the writer that maybe Hillary Clinton is returning the favor? Four Democratic senators running for President are trapped in Washington during the impeachment trial. The impeachment rules do not even permit these senators to use their phones to engage with their campaign staff for much of the day. Yet, of those four senators, whose name is in the national spotlight today? Yes, Bernie Sanders. And, whose supporters are riled up and digging in to go the extra mile while their candidate is not in Iowa? Yes, Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton doesn't decide what to each for lunch without looking at polling data or convening a focus group. She knows she's not exactly popular with much of the Democratic party. And, she knows that the Sanders supporters loathe her. Her remarks were well-timed to keep Sanders name in the news while he cannot be on the campaign trail.
Climate Change (CA)
I will vote for sanders if he eventually becomes the democratic nominee but two things to be kept in mind: 1.His policies are not practical. Just like trump but the other end. We don't want politicians to run on "pie in the sky" policies. For e.g.., Medicare for all (impractical); Government option (practical). Free college education (impractical); student loan forgiveness on case by case basis (practical). 2. Mr.Sanders is not a democrat. He is independent. Therefore, his candidacy should be strictly based on his policies. I personally don't vote party line (I am unaffiliated) but it is not fair to expect registered democrats to fall in line behind sanders without questions.
EMiller (Kingston, NY)
Hillary Clinton is just being Hillary Clinton. I agree that she needs to get a life already and stop harboring grudges.
Carol-Ann (Pioneer Valley)
@EMiller Using this comment to support the king of grudges is just a wee bit silly. She's not harboring grudges, she leaves that to the followers of the man who never truly conceded, never released his delegates in a timely fashion, and is still out there making the same misogynistic statements he was making in the 1980s. Your suggesting the wrong person get a life.
JJ (California)
It’s Secretary Clinton, not Mrs. Clinton. She is entitled to her voice, her opinions and to her truth. So, as an op-Ed writer, may I suggest you recognize all the people who have told her to sit down and shut up, and don’t fall into that company.
Jim (Albany)
@JJ Um, no She hasn’t been Secretary is State for over 6 years. You need to read the news.
kj (Portland)
Thank you for this.
Cate (San Francisco Bay)
Between the “Deplorables” and now the “Nobodies,” exactly who was left for Hillary Clinton to govern as president? Perhaps that is why her campaign struggled in vain — twice — to come up with a message to inspire voters, to simply explain why she was running. “Because it’s my turn” just didn’t resonate, did it?
Frank McNeil (Boca Raton, Florida)
Thank You. As Forrest Gump might say, Stupid Is as Stupid Does. Hillary Clinton, for reasons best known to her, decided it was more important to savage Bernie Sanders than to defeat Donald Trump. I hope Sanders will confine himself to saying, "Thank you Hillary, for your boost to my candidacy." It will be that if he can persuade his most ardent supporters to restrain their understandable anger in the interest of beating Trump with Sanders at the head of the ticket. I hope Sanders and his team will limit their response to listing his accomplishments as a Senator and let others defend his personality and his ability to work with others. There's a case to be made that Sanders is the toughest Democratic candidate and that toughness will be a great asset in defeating Trump. Reporters should ask the other Democratic candidates whether they agree with Hillary Clinton's jeremiad.
Carol-Ann (Pioneer Valley)
@Frank McNeil You may want to check the kerfuffle from last week created by the man who lost the 2016 primaries by 4 million votes. The man who suggested that a woman couldn't be elected president. And he's right. As long as people like him and those who follow him continue to act as irresponsibly as they did in 2016, nothing will change. Hillary is right. Sander is not tough, he is not a Democrat, and he is bone lazy. 7 bills made it to laws in 30+ years. 4 of those were housekeeping bills - naming post offices. No one, but no one, could have that kind of a track record in the private sector and still be employed, unless that person was the child of the boss.
Areader (Huntsville)
I think she is right about Bernie. I like the NY Times picks as I think either one of them can beat Trump.
David (Denver, CO)
Hillary exhibits typical Boomer behavior (yes, I'm sure my saying that will trigger a few egocentric people).
Dr. M (SanFrancisco)
I voted for both Hillary and Bill, as any alternative to the GOP is better for this country. I view both of them as egotistical disasters. Monica and deplorables are 2 examples, but Hillary running for president is the worst. She came across as entitled, arrogant and phoning it in, especially for the midwest. She just.can't.stop. demanding the limelight. Please; retire with no further public statements. You lost, your husband was one of 3 impeachment efforts ever - be gone.
Mike (North Carolina)
Yet another example of why she lost in 2016! She is so hung up on Hillary that she cannot see the current battle is to get rid of Trump.
gern blansten (Back woods)
Hear hear. Time for her to keep her thoughts to herself. This is petty.
Joel H (MA)
Could Hillary Clinton have thrown the 2016 election to Trump? She seems to be working against the Democrats again in 2020?! Mara Gay is just telling it like it is. Instead of holding firm to your “accepted wisdom” of what and how 2016 happened due to Bernie, how about doing some open minded research, as Mara Gay offers? After just barely losing the Electoral College and winning a 3 million vote majority in 2016 and the now added extreme negatives of Trump’s Presidency and the Impeachment, why isn’t the most qualified, third time’s the charm, who suffered “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”, Hillary Clinton running in 2020? Or is she?
Jeffrey Lewis (Vermont)
We have learned a great deal about Hillary, none of it flattering. She is narrow minded, angry, entitled, and precious. She single handedly lost an election that was easily winnable and should be ashamed for both her poor performance and the sly behavior that brought her down. She has damaged the Democrat Party for years with her selfish attitude. Time to simply be quiet.
John (NYC)
A typical Clintonian reaction. Self-serving right to the end of her career. No offense meant to the couple, or anyone who expresses fealty to them, but Mr. & Mrs Clinton you can dodder on off into the sunset now. Go make cookies or something. I know...I know...that's snide. But if either of 'em had a clue they'd take a page from Jimmy Carters post-presidential playbook and have a magnificent sunset. It would be better than this never ending "woe is me" attitude. I say get over it and move along, your time is done. And that applies to anyone who still thinks the Clintonistas are worthy of sitting in the power seats here in the 2020's. John~ American Net'Zen
History Guy (Connecticut)
Hillary Clinton, who I supported in 2016, is really a pretty clueless person. Her ego will not let her let go of past defeats and she holds grudges unbecomingly. She needs to just step off the stage. It is time to go away!
Robbie Heidinger (Westhampton)
She makes everybody like him!
Vivien (Sunny Cal)
I was a Hillary supporter. Had she not lost the electoral college we would not be in the horrible mess we are in. But, (and I never though I would say this), its time for her to sit down and shut up. She’s not helping anything.
Technic Ally (Toronto)
I've come here to pillory, The Clinton that's Hillary, Who's to blame for trump winning, In spite of his sinning. We've no need to hear her artillery.
JH (pporter oNJ)
Senator Clinton was unkind and unfair. Why, she was almost ss bad as many of the commentators!
Susan H (Pittsburgh)
My hope is that she will stay far, far away from WHOMEVER is our eventual candidate. She is loathsome (and, yes, I voted for her.)
Steve Schneider (NYC)
After giving her the benefit of the doubt for so many years, this is the final nail in her coffin, politically, as far as I’m concerned. What a shame…
Let’s Speak Up (San Diego)
Her only regret should be not making Bernie her VP. She would have had a slam dunk. Too bad. Too sad. Bye bye Hillary. She abused your power just as Trump. The difference between Hillary and Trump is that she was discrete about her corrupt practices and he is speaks out proudly and boldly.
Progressive Jew (Los Angeles)
Mara Gay does not belong on an editorial board. She either didn't read all that Clinton said in the Hollywood Reporter article–– her commitment to defeating Trump, and worries about Sanders' twitter squads sexist attacks Harris, Warren and Klobuchar––she is engaged in wilfull distortion. Trump was elected because of an array of forces: Putin's backing/meddling, resistance to a female in the White House, baseless smears advanced by Bernie Sanders and in the pages of the NY Times (Clinton Cash) and the failure to vet or criticize Bernie Sanders, his history of demeaning female opponents, his retrograde views on immigration and guns and his ethically-challenged and sexist campaign(s).
V Brown (London, UK)
That's SECRETARY Clinton. Though, poor form Hillary. Rise above it.
Mary Ann (Texas)
I voted for Hillary Clinton. I really, really wish she would just keep out of the Democratic Primary. And, I wish she would stop talking about Trump, every time she does it energizes my right of center friends. Hillary, your boat has sailed. Please stop trying to find a raft on which to pole after it.
Everyman (Canada)
This would have been a more compelling op-ed had you also written one four years ago that said, “Bernie, you didn’t mean to, but you created a virtual but fanatical mob comprising take-no-prisoners armchair radicals, incels, and and your garden variety misogynists. You need to get someone into your organization who understands social media to shut this down before it ends up destroying the USA by facilitating the election of Donald Trump.” But you didn’t. So why is this debacle not your responsibility rather than Hillary Clinton’s?
KM (Pittsburgh)
@Everyman Bernie has no responsibility to address the nonsense you just made up in your head. His voters were more loyal to the democrats than Hillary's were in 2008, and he did far more for her campaign than Hillary did for Obama.
Dan Thompson (DC)
Who is the “nobody” who likes Bernie? Just as she did with her comment about the “deplorables” who support Trump, Hillary has found a way to take votes away from the eventual Democratic nominee. #Hillary is helping “nobody.”
Unworthy Servant (Long Island NY)
A storm in a teacup. Your ideological biases are showing. Where was your criticism of another of our candidates (the one of two you endorsed) who regularly accuses fellow Democrats (Biden, Klobuchar and the ex-Mayor) of running "in the wrong primary". Calling someone who questions your pie in the sky proposals a closet Republican is hardly promoting party unity, is it? I understand that Sen. Warren has the zealotry of a convert to our party. But since you quoted young people in your piece, I'd advise you and your endorsed candidate "to just chill".
Sandra Garratt (Palm Springs, California)
Hillary seems to be projecting.....she rode in on her husband's coattails, clearly NOT an independent woman and I do not even consider her to be a Feminist. If she had not gone along for the ride in Bill's career as a lifelong politician standing for nothing but his own career & $ had not happened I suspect she would have been a lawyer in some small town or a back room legal advisor...I supported her twice as my NY Senator where she did not accomplish anything other than voting to invade innocent Iraq and I supported her in her run against Obama...she is not a real leader, she is a divider...talks the talk, one would think that she gave up her seat on the bus to Rosa Parks...she was a Goldwater Girl and is proud to call war criminal Henry Kissinger her friend...also defended her friend Harvey Weinstein against his accusers (because he gave her campaign money ?)...and if she is such a dyed in the wool feminist why did she throw all those women her husband abused under the bus? I now deeply regret ever voting and donating to Hillary and Bill.....Hillary is no longer relevant and clearly is part of the problem, not part of the solution. All the Clintons need to just go away and keep quiet and that includes Chelsea too.
cornbear (St Paul)
Hilary Clinton is a former Secretary of State and a former US Senator. Isn't it standard to use one of those titles rather than "Mrs." as an identifier?
Mary A (Sunnyvale, CA)
Hillary needs to retire to her almost-Presidential library and STAY OUT OF THIS ELECTION! She has already done enough damage by installing her cronies at the DNC who didn't take any other candidate seriously other than their "boss" . . . enough!!
Kay Jones (Chapel Hill, NC)
Just occasionally (or more often), listen to the opponent. The Republicans have united in support of this "deplorable" president. That Senate majority, with precious few dissensions, has positioned itself to block anything that DJT opposes. What does that say about party unity? That, effectively employed, it can marginalize a majority of voters, and deny the country of a much deserved removal from office of the most incompetent and dishonorable president in the history of the Republic. Why can't these Dem candidates subordinate their own ambitions, and unite to defeat this threat to our Republic? Each wants to be the nominee, but to gain the nomination and so shatter the Democratic party that Trump triumphs again would be to subject our nation to another 4 years of absolute dysfunction. I supported HRC, but her disruptive screed against Sen Sanders is even worse than Sen Sanders' less than enthusiastic campaigning for her in 2016. She pursues payback, at Sen Sanders expense, for what she blames for her failed 2016 campaign. Why do we continue to examine and dissect 2016? This is a new electoral opportunity to create a new narrative for 2020 & moving forward. Let DJT continue to obsess over the past, and let a united voting majority Dem party create a new path forward in support of critical initiatives. If we have 4 more years of DJT, it will be far too late to even begin to repair the tragic damages caused by this administration and DJT's sycophant Senate and voting base.
C. Bowling (Atlanta GA)
I have aleays been a fervent supporter of Hillary Clinton, but I am shocked by her recent comments about Tulsi Gabbard and Bernie Sanders. Her comments about Gabbard were unnecessary -- even though I know that I'd have to hold my nose very tightly to vote for Gabbard in the very unlikely circumstance in which she became the Democratic candidate. Also, I believe that Clinton's comments about Sanders are inappropriate and unnecessary -- even though he is definitely not my first choice for the Democratic nomination. I wish that Ms Clinton would show some of the brains and political savvy which have always been at the top of the list of characteristics that have made me an admirer of hers for decades. She should refrain from making comments, like her recents ones, about any of the Democratic candidates, all of whom are far, far superior to Donald Trump.
carl bumba (mo-ozarks)
Maybe it's time to bury the hatchets (or to at least try). We should NOT use shared animosity toward Trump (or anyone) to unite us though. This is wrong and should feel wrong. We need to be united by our desire to make America fair for everyone, not just the "haves". We need to try to reverse damages we've done to the environment, for the sake of the planet and us.
Father of One (Oakland)
"All that did was help Tulsi Gabbard, who some have feared might wage an independent campaign in November. Her relevance was briefly inflated by being the object of Mrs. Clinton’s public ire." "Briefly" being the operative word. Gabbard still has 0-1 percent of the vote in the latest polls. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has an opinion these days. Some might say we've reached peak opinion. So it's tough to begrudge anyone, including HRC, for having an opinion, even one that is made public. The good news is that the news cycle has compressed so much that juicy bits of news, such as Hillary's views of Bernie, have the half life of a two year old's attention.
JLR (Kansas)
Insiders have known this about Sanders for years. Misogyny, racism, even antisemitism disguised as “anti-zionism”, staffing issues with the same, etc. abound. I’d have to hold my nose to vote for him, but “anyone but trump” is my motto
A Nobody (Nowhere)
I feel so bad that people got sucked into caring about all that Bernie-baloney about the relentless, 40-year, obliteration of the middle class, and historic wealth and income disparity, and millions of people driven into bankruptcy by medical bills, and millions of people losing their homes in the Great Recession, and big tech and drug and financial corporations preying on humans like so many wild beasts. As if any of that baloney is real. All the little voters should have known that my C-suite peeps in The Hamptons and my good friends at Goldman who gushed money into my coffers care about them. How was I supposed to know all those little voters were too stupid not to be sucked into Bernie's baloney? I feel so bad that people got sucked into it. It must be hard being so stupid that you don't even understand that the good folks at Goldman and in the C-suites of massive, multinational corporations really care about what's best for you (as opposed to, say, their bonuses and stock options). It's all so unfair and everybody knows it. That's why nobody likes Bernie. He's a nerd. We never used to let him sit at our table in the cafeteria. Plus the way he dresses and looks. Own a comb much? Eeeew! Everybody totally likes me over him. A cool kid like me endorse a nerd? As if. So there.
irene (fairbanks)
@A Nobody Oh, and our long, well documented friendship with Epstein was just a very remote relationship, we barely knew him. (Although Bill really liked that blue dress portrait of Himself prominently displayed in Epstein's NY mansion, one of the many Epstein properties we hardly ever, ever visited). A vast right wing conspiracy must have faked the 'Lolita Express' flight logs we got listed on.
Martin G Sorenson (The Arkansas Ozarks)
The first time Hillary has really let me down. Sure she has the right to support or not whoever she wants to. BUT as Democrat, to not support the anointed candidate is apostasy. ESPECIALLY WHEN WE MUST BEAT TRUMP.
Sylvia P. (Bend, OR)
Thank god Hillary is speaking her mind and telling the truth about Bernie. She's doing the Democratic party a favor. If Bernie gets the nomination, we'll end up facing four more years of Trump.
Curtis Hinsley (Sedona, AZ)
Boy, do I agree with this opinion piece. Clinton should just stop talking if she cannot hide her bitterness. Why is it that politicians have such a hard time knowing when their time on the stage is over? Where is the graciousness, the mature coming to terms with life's rewards and injustices?
Joseph (California)
Once again, Hillary shows a lack of grace and humility. As smart as she is, she has to know that her words create dissension. After she lost, she only seemed to look outside of herself for the reasons she lost instead of looking at why so many of us had to hold our nose and why many others couldn’t possibly vote for her. I have a lot of liberal friends here in California and don’t recall any of them supporting her with enthusiasm. She exudes hubris every time she opens her mouth, which many see as a turnoff. This suits her in the crowd she associates with, but most are not drawn to that mindset. We will all be thankful when she is out of the news for good. Please go for a long walk in the woods. Maybe complete a through hike of the Appalachian Trail this spring and summer!
live now, you'll be a long time dead (San Francisco)
Hillary is right. But, she is "dead right". Not the person one wants as president, though she should be. With greatness should come grace, with power: generosity, with intelligence: charity, with entitlement: noblesse oblige. Hillary unfortunately has none of the attributes of greatness and all of the hallmarks of the villains feeding the reactionary totalitarian backlash to the privileged elite's dismissive rule.
MP (DC)
Already a detested figure to the right and independents, Hillary appears to be doing everything in her power to be universally loathed by all but her most cultish followers. I can't think of anything that more aptly captures the core of HRC than these most recent comments. She is still walking around like something is owed to her.
MDCooks8 (West of the Hudson)
It appears that Hillary Clinton's deplorable actions now are catching on that Trump voters already knew 3 years ago. Perhaps civility really isn't an attribute Democrats claim to be...
Rick Johnson (Newport News, VA)
It seems Hillary is guilty of projection. Full of bitterness and regrets about how poorly she managed her campaign in 2016, she projects her own deflated self-image on Bernie. What her subconscious was telling the world when she said "Nobody likes him" was that she feels that nobody likes HER. And if she keeps up this sniping at other Democrats, thereby aiding and abetting a win by Trump, she will very soon be completely and entirely right.
Paul (California)
Good article. Let the people decide. Hillary should exit stage left or right, but get off the stage. She is a drag on the Dems. The Dems don't need a loser who whines as a spokesperson for them. Hillary was damaged goods. So don't blame everything on the voters: they saw the truth that Hillary was a sanctimonious, righteous, wealthy person, who thought she had the corner on issues, especially social justice issues. Regrettably, she forgot about the economic issue and basically was seen as a man hater. While I am not a Bernie fan, I think Hillary is a spoiler for Dems.
William Grey (23456)
The Democrats killed Bernie in 2016 and the same people are going after him now. Not unfairly as he would be unelectable in a national election because he favors a change in our government. Bernie actually liked what has happened to Cuba under the vicious Castro brothers so there you go! He doesn't even understand history and who wants to be like Cuba? Hillary is so good at going after people, she has built a career on it.
Folksy (Wisconsin)
“On issue after issue, there should be no doubt in anybody’s mind as to whether Hillary Clinton is the superior candidate because in every respect she is,” Mr. Sanders said to the crowd of about 300 people. “I intend, as a United States senator, to do everything that I can between now and Election Day to make certain that Donald Trump does not become the next president of the United States.” Bernie Sept. 5, 2016
Betsy H (Lebanon, NH)
I wish everyone would abide by civility all the time, not just in comments in the NY Times! Please don't try to beat Trump using his methods. As an old school teacher I just want to say "Play nicely". Don't let the infantile bully win. Everyone is very tired of the spectacle of our government officials acting irresponsibly. Let everyone running for Public Office "mind your manners". This is more important for the survival of our country than any program that has been proposed or will be proposed. Please give me someone I would invite into my Living Room.
thebigmancat (New York, NY)
Ms. Clinton will work to undermine the nominee regardless of who it is. If Mr. Trump wins again, it will help eradicate her legacy as a loser. After all, then she will be able to say, "Hey look. They couldn't beat him either."
Laurence Hauben (California)
Dear Mrs. Clinton: Bernie Sanders did not cause your loss in 2016. Your own poor campaign choices (Tim who for VP, Deplorables, taking the Midwest for granted), together with a smear campaign against you that started in the 90s with Newt Gingrich, did that. Now please focus on the target: Trump and McConnell, or just go play with your grandchildren and let us move on.
A Dot (Universe)
Yay for Hillary! She’s not a hypocrite. There’s no reason she should support Bernie. He helped get Trump into office. Bernie never really supported her after she won the primary. And she’s absolutely right that he’s gotten nothing done in his decades as a senator — except to disparage the Democratic Party he joins only when doing so will help him. But he won’t win the primary, so no need for her to endorse him. I am sure Hillary will endorse, and promote, whichever Democrat wins the primary.
MikeJaquish (Cary, NC)
"...disparaging other Democrats...?" I am a Democrat. Hillary Clinton is a Democrat. Bernie Sanders is merely a divisive opportunist, and he is NOT a Democrat. Nowhere in her interview does Hillary Clinton disparage a Democrat.
Richard B (Cincinnati OH)
Does the Democratic Party realize that the most convincing Presidential candidate is being ignored right before our very eyes? He is Adam Schiff! He was on my short list nearly a year ago. And since then he has outshone ALL the announced candidates. He is Trump's worst nightmare.
JD (Florida)
I continue to think that she would have made a good president and would enthusiastically support her against the current field but tone deaf comments like this remind us why it didn't, and never will, happen.
in-the weeds (Chicago)
Ms Gay, I think you "disrupted party unity" with your biased interview of Pete Buttigieg. Compared to all the other candidates it was hostile and disrespectful, so because I support Pete it also felt disrespectful to me. So now I'm not so thrilled with the prospect of Amy Klobuchar because you basically ignored the polls to push your candidate. I will do my best to get over that should she be the nominee, but you made that harder. Social media is also to blame...we no longer make up our own minds on anything. It's really sad.
Lynne Shapiro (California)
The New York Times does a disservice to younger staff members by not holding them up to high journalistic standards. --first in the original article that exploited the Democratic contest by reporting Former Secretary of State Clinton's remarks in a four hour film out of context and then in this opinion piece that didn't consider the flaws of the original article. Former Secretary of State Clinton did not hold a press conference or the like to give any opinion at all about the Democratic candidates before the key primaries. She answered a question for a film that is to be released after Super Tuesday.
Asher (Brooklyn)
What Hillary said is that no one liked Sanders in the Senate, which is why he could never get anything done. She's right. The Democratic Party is currently in such disarray that many are latching on to a washed-up old Communist, who is suddenly a Scandinavian Socialist don't you know? In other words, a fraud. Hillary was being honest. Kudos.
Bhramanti (Wanderer) (Pune, India)
The premise of this article is wrong! Mrs. Clinton know for sure she never would have been able to beat Bernie without Bill & DNC collusion. So she is again trying to cheat Bernie of his victory.
Tom Callaghan (NY)
As history highlights the numerous blunders or lackluster accomplishments of Hillary as NY Senator and Secretary of State, it amazes me that anyone bothers to ask, let alone care, what she thinks of Sanders or any other candidates; and worse, to let it matter. She is a failure, and the biggest courtesy we can pay her is to forget her.
On a Small Island (British Columbia, Canada)
Mrs Clinton is just too much status and not enough quo. A needy, bitter and angry person that, by pulling this stunt, will help to deliver a 2020 victory for Trump.
Portola (Bethesda)
It's sad to see this petulant side of Hillary Clinton. I had thought, based on her performance as a candidate, that she was better than this. That she would put party, and country, before pride. I guess I was wrong.
pf (Boston)
'nobody likes him' is straight out of the trump playbook. her comments say WAY more about her than they do about bernie. i held my nose and voted for her in 2016. now i wish she'd go away.
James (Chicago)
I could not disagree with you more. Sanders did more than anyone else to push the election over to Trump. He was sour grapes on Clinton until the very last moment, well after he had succeeded in totally alienating his followers from backing her. Disgraceful and unforgiveable. I am in fact a far left liberal and I hope sincerely he does not become the Democratic candidate. He is way, way too extreme to be elected, he's too old and not in good health, and just simply cannot work across the aisle to reach a consensus and govern. It is folly and a recipe for disaster. Hillary is 100 percent correct to call a spade a spade - and to do so now before the left wing wastes yet another election. Get real.
William (Westchester)
Normally, I detest ascribing motives or otherwise claiming special knowledge of what is in people's heads, or their hearts for that matter. However, Hillary has a sort of bully pulpit, the old pro. If she has a dog in this fight it is far more likely her old associate Joe or either of the two Times endorsees. If the last two are smart, I think they might find a way to avoid her endorsement. Until then she can take her shots, however spiteful they may appear. It's a free country.
Sue Salvesen (New Jersey/South Dakota)
The irony of HRC calling Bernie a career politician is too much to bear. Go away, Secretary Clinton, just go away.
Notmypresident (Los Altos)
Does she know Putin's Donny is too much for the country to bear? Maybe she does. But then maybe she is like Putin's Donny - she holds a grudge for her lost in 2016 and blames Sanders for that instead of her own baggage and her inept campaign. I guess it must be difficult to swallow that she did not become president after decades of waiting in the wings thinking that she would be crowned the moment she announced her intention to run. Then comes Bernie who gave her a hard run during the primary season. Get over it, Hillary. Maybe nobody likes Bernie but even fewer likes you. Your best bet now is to go back to talk to Goldman Sachs and perhaps makes another six figures.
ann schaetzel (brooklyn, ny)
This makes me despair. Not to be able to move on into our absolutely critical moment! it's NOW, not 4 year ago, Clinton's no longer a candidate even if she wishes she were. Such backward-looking resentment at this moment when we must unite is so petty, unworthy...
Visible (Usa)
"stop talking" and "go away" are phrases I have seen hurled at Hillary CONSTANTLY. It makes me so sad to see. She has dedicated her life to serving this country, overcome obstacles we can't even imagine, and is constantly held to an impossible standard. It really makes me sad to see this brilliant woman punished for... what, exactly? Losing the electoral college? Not being obsessed with Bernie? It boggles my mind how consumed people are with hating her, even now. If she was your wife, mother, daughter would you tell her to "go away" and "stop talking"? I am a total Bernie supporter, but Hillary is one of my idols.
jeda (Oregon)
"Mrs. Clinton" does not owe anyone anything, including "the party". She has gone beyond the call of duty despite obstacles hurled her way. An NYT op-ed calling her out is more disruptive/divisive than than Secretary Clinton not voicing her opinion at this time.
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
Hillary has lost the last of her fan base with this comment. What was she thinking? Hillary, if you see this, and if you care about helping to save our Republic, please don’t make any more appearances or statements of opinion about ANY Democratic presidential candidate. Please don’t insert yourself into this process. This is no longer your fight.
Ken Solin (Berkeley, California)
Will Hillary ever stop whining? She ran the most ineffective political campaign ever and she's still whining. Leave Bernie alone Hillary because at least he's willing to make the physical effort to reach voters while you never bothered visiting several Midwestern states Trump ended up winning. What the Clintons have to say just doesn't matter to anyone anymore. I still cringe when I think about holding my nose and voting for you. Yes, you were the lesser of two evils but not by much.
H.M. (Texas)
The inappropriate, pointed use of "Mrs." distracts and detracts from the point. Petty barbs like that aren't what we need at this juncture.
Karen Owsowitz (Arizona)
Sander and his supporters have that MAGA-like deluded quality: "oh, Sanders is middle of the road." "oh, Bernie would have beaten Trump," "blah, blah, blah." They are somehow convinced that that his or their PURITY will win the day -- despite their "revolution's" assorted failures in recent elections. Bernie doesn't need accomplishments or real numbers or any coherent idea of how to realize his schemes, just saying the magic words is enough for his cult. What a disaster for the country if this utter nonsense came to represent the Democratic Party in the contest with Trump and the monied, conservative interests that belief, with reason, that they own this country.
Dennis (Maine)
Thank you. "But considering the stakes, it’d be best if Mrs. Clinton worked through all that on her own."
michael (anderson)
I'm very disappointed in HC, this shows poor leadership. Sounds like sour grapes. I expect better from the most recent party nominee - this makes her look very small. Whomever the Democratic nominee is, they have my vote. HC, you had your moment, if you have nothing constructive to say, say nothing.
cloudsandsea (France)
She was beaten by Donald Trump! That is the sad truth which we all now have to live with, and it says everything about her.
michellenyc (chicago)
@cloudsandsea no she beat trump - by 3 million votes. but she was defeated by the electoral college. In any other country she would be president right now.
Meredith (New York)
Oh, she's got 'festering resentment'? Well, my festering resentment is about how Hillary thinks she's got the presidency coming to her. Enough already---and with manipulative Dems who are Republican lite. She's mad at not being 1st female US pres? Is she a bit jealous of Warren, who's done pretty darn well, and refused to shake hands with Sanders--the one HRC dislikes? Sure HRC would be way better than that crook we got now. So what? HRC feels entitled. She got millions in speech fees from the Wall St banks who'd caused the biggest crash since the 1929 Great Depression. Then while asking for all our votes, she refused to divulge what she said to those big banks, like it was none of our business. That's pretty crucial information for voters to know, if democracy means anything. Millions of citizens were hurt by the '08 Crash, but the big banks recovered -- our govt 'foamed the runways' for them--- as Wall St biggie Geithner advised Obama. Also, Hillary said if elected, she'd refuse to restore the Glass Steagall bank rules passed in FDR's time, that her husband and the GOP has repealed----rules that kept us better protected from huge crashes for many decades. Did HRC really need to set up her own server? She takes pride in doing what she wants. Seems duty to the public interest is low priority. Of course, I wish she'd won in 2016! Thanks, Ms. Gay. Sanders raised big money. More Anti Sanders stuff ahead.
Louis (Amherst, NY)
Hillary Clinton could have won had she chosen Bernie as her VP and run on the economy.
Burt Shulman (Kinderhook, NY)
No excuse for her trash-talking in 2020, but your characterization of Bernie in 2016 is far too kind. He cost her crucial votes by refusing to accept that he wasn't going to be the nominee long after that became clear, and continuing to slam her as the "establishment, big-money" candidate. Trump capitalized on that by claiming that Bernie had been robbed by "crooked Hillary," thereby pouring oil on the bitter fire Sanders had lit among his supporters (before he finally gave up and threw his support to her). On election day, a substantial number of Sanders supporters either stayed home or (unbelievably) voted for Trump.
mary bardmess (camas wa)
President Clinton, who was actually elected twice, is not continually called upon for comment on current events. Why is she?
Mark Johnson (Dearing, Georgia)
I'll vote for the rascal if he's nominated, but I fervently hope that he is not. He is not a Democrat, does nothing for the party, stayed in the 2016 race long after it was clear he had lost, and, worst of all, has done absolutely nothing to discourage his zealots from believing that the nomination was stolen from him. He lost. He lost in the primaries. He would be as inept as a president as he has been as a senator.
Susan Michael (Brunswick ME)
I am furious at Hillary Clinton. Once again, she puts herself over party. Isn't there someone in her personal/professional circle who can get her to sit down and be quiet?
JNR2 (Madrid)
Why are people blaming Clinton for speaking her mind? She's a private citizen and entitled to her opinion. Let us not forget that she spoke these words because someone in the press asked her to do so. Would you prefer she lie, as many pundits accuse her of doing regularly? Moreover, her opinion of Bernie is getting an even wider audience because pieces like this are responding to it. Here's a thought: If you want the issue to go away, maybe don't write about it in the New York Times.
Leslie (Amherst)
My mother used to say, "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all." For the sake of the nation, I think it's time for Hillary to pay attention to my mother.
diezilla (Palm City, FL)
HRC comments on Sanders are in reaction to his recent disagreement with Warren, because Sanders still bears deep-seated misogyny. His 2016 action of his slow walk to position himself with the Dem ticket speaks louder than whatever he says now. He just can't help himself. Indeed this nation is still largely unschooled in misogyny and we need to be guided by those who have experienced it first hand. So, thank you Hillary, unfortunately we still have a very long way to go.
David Godinez (Kansas City, MO)
Politicians must view each other with a clear eye, not blurred by party affiliation or sentimentality, and I suspect that's all Mrs. Clinton is doing with these comments lifted from a documentary. Once we see these quotes in context, that will likely become clear. But there's no doubt that coming from a familial bastion of Democratic centrism, Mrs. Clinton would also see a Sanders nomination as a precursor to a Democratic electoral disaster, and a guarantee of another term for the President. So, her comments serve as a warning as well.
Lynne Shapiro (California)
@David Godinez I have commented several times w/my comments not posted about how flawed both articles are --to journalistic standards as well-- by lifting comments out of context. from long filming sessions and making a big tsmis/deal out of them. I am glad your comment pointing this out, probably among many besides my own, did get posted.
Linda Chuss (Massachusetts)
Yes, Mrs. Clinton has first amendment rights but she also is a major public figure for the party, by virtue of having been its most recent presidential nominee. She can exercise her right to free speech with the kinds of things she said about a major Dem. candidate, but then she gives up her right to being listened to as inspiring party leader. Her words were not something I want leaders to say - it was kind of Trumpian. This is a lack of good judgement on her part, something that plagued her throughout her career in politics.
michellenyc (chicago)
She already beat Bernie? Too bad he didn't bother to acknowledge that until months after it was apparent to everyone and instead decided to attack and demean and refuse to say he would support her as the nominee. She was more than gracious to him at the time - and she has every right now to finally speak her peace.
Eccl3 (Orinda, CA)
Recall that (1) for years the Clintons would "primary" anyone whom they viewed as insufficiently supportive of Hillary in her failed 2008 run against Barack Obama, and (2) fear of similar retribution (a) prevented many candidates from running in the 2016 Democratic primary, and (b) caused the more vulnerable super-delegates to take the ethically questionable route of pledging support for Hillary long before the Democratic convention. Hillary's current behavior towards Senator Sanders regarding 2016 represents a continued pattern of negative behavior towards those who "cross" the Clintons. However, this reminds us why the Democrats may have a better chance against Trump this go round, since the winner of this go round's competitive Democratic primary will have a level of legitimacy not experienced by Hillary last go round, and will have had to prove his or herself on the merits instead of through fear and intimidation.
Laurence Bachmann (New York)
Bernie is a Socialist, not a Democrat, remember? Why should/would any Democrat feel obliged to support him? As Bernie's Bros told us over and over and over again--we're not needed. We're corrupt. We're corporate stooges. We're the problem. We're the past. . They can win without us. This Boomer says: Okay! Go Bros, Go! Do it....win without us. Nominate Elizabeth Warren. Or this corrupt stooge stays home.
Jim (Albany)
@Laurence Bachmann Why would anyone support Sanders? Because we don’t need another four years of Trump.
Danielle McClellan (Granada, Spain)
The whole Bernie-bro thing was really pushed by the Clinton campaign in 2016, and she mentioned it again in her comments this week. Nina Turner's response to that in 2016* is just as relevant now that others are using the same tactic: "I just think it is really hyped by the Clinton campaign. I mean, both candidates have people who really, really support them and sometimes in ways that are not nice. But it's the same thing, if people want to research this, it's the same thing that the Clinton campaign did to President, then Senator, Obama. I think they were called 'Obama Boys.' So it's really the same stuff recycled that there are a group of men out there that are rabid and they're sexist and they're really against Secretary Clinton." While I respect the sentiment of this editorial, that it was written by a member of the Time’s Editorial Board, which certainly sowed more division with its protracted endorsement process than Sec. Clinton’s comment (one that she has already apologized for by the time this editorial was printed) did, is highly problematic for this reader. I also wish the Times would focus more on policies and less on personalities. This article and the one that spurred it seem beneath what the Times claims to be about.
slc (TX)
Clinton's comments show us once more why she lost in 2016 and that she has apparently learned nothing. In the same way calling Trump supporters "deplorable" didn't persuade any of them to vote for her, calling Sanders supporters "Bernie Bros" isn't going to unify the party. When will Democrats realize that calling someone sexist, racist, or stupid for having different views wont make them more likely to agree with them?
Sage (California)
Hillary, we really don't need your opinion. It's not helpful--quite divisive and your 15 minutes are over.
Max (Zanesville)
Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Hilary is right about Bernie. Bernie is right about Hillary. Dems ignored Ben Jealous' warnings on MTP about taking Black voters for granted. Hillary was out in Arizona. Trump was in Rust Belt. Mayor Pete is well spoken but reeks of ambition and has no experience. Kamala trashing Biden. Hunter Biden. What were they thinking? $300 K speeches at Goldman Sachs?Pocahontas. Warren needs a chill pill. So does Booker. Amy K does not inspire. The Obamas had class and dignity. Dems need new blood immediately! How about Van Hollen, Jason Crow, Val Demmings? A unity conference? Is there a non-billionaire who is likable, bright, good heart, easy going, good communicator, moderately progressive out there? Trump is a mess. Trump is a mess. Trump is a mess.
