I don’t know why you find it so difficult to give the Chiefs their due. It’s with great delight that I’m able to point out that you were wrong - again - about their ability.
Joseph (USA)
@Patricia O’Dell No. I strongly disagree with you ! I think NYT did the correct prediction. They figured KC would maybe win but narrowly. But we stopped Henry, pushed Tannehill around and played with little to no mistakes. And that is why I too, share your great delight in pointing out that they were wrong -again- about their abilities. :)
Marge Keller (Midwest)
What an amazing match up if the Packers beat San Francisco and then march on to Miami to meet up with KC. What's especially cool is that Aaron Rogers and Patrick Mahomes are great friends. I think they will be even greater competitors if the Green Bay gods smile down on the Packers this evening. What an incredible day of professional football. Go Packers!!!
CL (Paris)
GO PACK GO!
Brad (Chester, NJ)
The Packers have a poor running game, which will enable SF to concentrate on GB’s passing game, where GB has few weapons. Another blowout wouldn’t surprise me.
susan (nyc)
brad - google Aaron Jones, Packers running back.
Mary A (Sunnyvale, CA)
No one whom I’d rather have with the ball than Aaron Rodgers with two minutes left and the game on the line. Go Packers!
Ken Schweikert (Blue Hill Maine)
What does Titans +7 mean? I am not g gambler. Are you predicting the Titans to win by 7? Why not give us a prediction of the score. Gambling on sports is illegal in most of the US. Why would you be encouraging illegal activity? I don't need to gamble to enjoy the NFL. I was interested to know who you thou g ht would win. Titans+7 doesn't do that for me unless you meant that they would win by 7 which frankly seems unlikely given the rest of your commentary
Tony (New York City)
Hate to be spoiler, we have loved all sports , we understand the damage football does to the human body and proud that Boston university is diligently working on the head concussions and attempting to prevert head injuries. With that being said it was unbelievably sad to once again hear about the cheating that went on with the Astro's, the investigation in to the Boston Red Sox. So many scandals in the last twenty years. Maybe we need to look at the place that sports places in our lives that organization would go to the lengths that they did to win. Society has a cheating problem we cheat at everything, look at the GOP president. Winning is not everything but college ie Baylor college has placed winning above the well being of their female students who were being assaulted by the sports team. A big Thank you to Ken Starr. Apparently their is no critical thinking skills being developed at the sports schools. It is hard to watch these great warriors play and wonder who is being paid off and who is really playing for the love of the game. Media promotes their favorite players and in the NFL, since there is a shortage of minority football coaches it is evident that the racism and winning at any cost is the white American way. Enjoy the games today , in the spring we will find out who was cheating
Kevin Cahill (Albuquerque)
Why do people watch football? It’s a dangerous game in which corporations battle with players who get injured in the brain and in their knees. In the NCAA, universities lose $20 billion a year competing for TV dollars. European and Asian universities do not waste money on such dangerous nonsense.
Gerald Marantz (BC Canada)
Winnipeg won the Grey Cup! Super Bowl, boring American football, who cares?
Debbie (Santa Cruz)
GO 9ERS!!!
Lisa Gonzalez (Denver, CO)
Go Pack Go!
J111111 (Toronto)
Looks like the NFL is in one of those phases where one Conferencer is stronger (now the NFC, other times AFC). I doubt there's all that much nostalgic sentimentality in the fan base for the historic but wonky Conference-based Divisional titles, and Playoffs should be rejigged on the basis of a straight up League-wide ranking.
DH (Brooklyn, NY)
Niners by 20. They are the chosen ones.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Great to see so many Packer fans!!!
Harry B (Michigan)
It’s fun to see a bruising running back run roughshod over nfl defenses. I miss the balance of running and passing. That said, defense wins Super Bowls and the 49ers have the best defense so far. Can T sizzle rekindle past glory and stop Henry a few times? Should be fun to watch and the best part, Brady and Kraft won’t be celebrating another SB win with the conn.
J. Reb (Oregon)
As an NFL team owner (1 share Green Bay Packers) I hope my team wins.
Ted (Florida)
@J. Reb I grew up in San Francisco but haven’t liked them since the days of the great Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, plus they play in Santa Clara, not the same team or city. I love the Packers and most of all their shared ownership with the citizens of Green Bay, alsoThe Lions and Fords ownership and the Saints and the lovely family that owns them, even Jerry Jones, like him or not he is Captain America, so much better than some oligarch like Kraft and several of the others that have never been around a football just in it for their little egos and the revenue sharing. Go Packers, long live Green Bay!😎
susan (nyc)
Not sure about the Packers winning tomorrow but I believe it was the Niners coach that said "We don't expect to meet the same team we played a few weeks ago." Go Pack!!!
Alex (San Diego)
I think from the way the season has gone, it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs winning by under 7 and the Packers getting blown out.
OLG (NYC)
The logical selections are the Chiefs & Niners. However, they have to play the game. A Packer versus Titans SB sounds so strange, yet a couple of turnovers or misplays could make this happen. Go Pack !!
James M. Trapp (Snowmass Village Colorado)
I am bothered by the NYT writers’ predictions based upon the betting line. Beating or losing to the odds never has won a championship.
JDSept (New England)
@James M. Trapp But since betting is what makes the NFL so popular...…...….
MattNg (NY, NY)
The Chief will never win a Super Bowl with Andy Reid as a coach. Even if they make it there this year, he'll mismanage the game clock late int he game, as he always does in big games. Chiefs fans, face: with Reid as your coach, you will never win the bing one!
JDSept (New England)
@MattNg Red Sox and Cubs will never win a World Series either. Reid's coaching record is superior to how many other NFL coaches?
Carl Cox (Riverdale, Ga.)
I'm a fan 49er fan and believe the Chiefs will win by 14 or more points, I call them like I see them. I'm not impressed by Andy Reid, however, Kyle Shanahan proved when he was the offensive coordinator with the Falcons and starting passing the ball most of the time in the second half instead of running the ball most of the time, thus allowing the Patriots to come back and win the Super Bowl in overtime, that he's not up to challenge. Also, in the last 3 games of the season and in the NFC championship game, the 49ers offense was not very good in the second half of these games. That will hurt the 49ers against the Chiefs. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
Eddie D (Hayward, CA)
A new era is upon us, 2 more Ws for a sixth title, with plenty more on the horizon. It could be described as the new "Gold Standard" Sorry Packer fans, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. One thing to consider is that Aaron Rodgers doesn't play well on the West Coast. It's been proven time after time. Remember playing the Chargers this season? However they did beat the Raiders, but c'mon, it's the Raiders. 49ers 30. Packers 13
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Must folks assumed New England would beat Miami and Baltimore would crush Tennessee. Neither was the case. The best thing about this year's round of playoffs are the unexpected victories by the underdogs. That being said, Green Bay may just surprise the heck out of everyone and beat San Francisco, although I think the likelihood would be more plausible if the game was being played at Lambeau Field. After all, there is something about home field advantage. Good luck Packers!!!
Moehoward (The Final Prophet)
"Case in point: The Chiefs were down by 24-0 to the Houston Texans in the second quarter of last weekend’s divisional round game......" ....BECAUSE OF THREE TURNOVERS. THREE mistakes. Yea, that cost them 21 points, but it was three mistakes. Take away those 21 mistake points and you have KC winning by 41 points.
James (Czech Republic)
@Moehoward that's not how it works.
Kevin (U.S.)
@Moehoward Best to Curly Joe
Rhporter (Virginia)
The pack is back. Wait and see
Barbara (South Bay)
Hope you’re wrong about the Chiefs losing.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@Barbara Me too!
jill otey (portland or)
@Barbara That was not the pick being made by this writer. The pick was that the Chiefs would not cover the spread (seven points). In other words, bet that the Chiefs will not beat the Titans by more than six points.
DeeAitch (Houston)
Considering what the Titans did the last three weekends, it's just foolish to bet against them. They already beat the GOAT and will add Mahomes to the list of mini GOATs they beat on their way to a Superbowl championship. Titans by a field goal.
Vt (SF, CA)
Titans ... don't think so! However huge congrats for getting this far. But we've seen this movie before and they don't enough to beat the Chiefs ... or even keep it close. NINERS look real! And they are a very entertaining Team to watch.[BTW: Also enjoyed today's other NYT Sports article about the SF & Oakland NFL axis. Quite bemused as the 49ers now play outside San Jose.] NINERS vs. CHIEFS is a most worthy Super Bowl match up!
hdtvpete (Newark Airport)
If Green Bay can get Aaron Jones going on the ground, they have a chance. A strong ground game will keep the 49ers secondary honest and open up the passing game. And don't discount veteran QB savvy - the Saints scored 46 points on this defense and only lost by 2 points on a 4th down blown coverage. The depleted Seahawks with Russell Wilson racked up another 22 and came within inches of taking the #1 seed away from San Francisco. Yes, they are favored to win, but I'd rather have Rodgers driving the bus than Garoppolo in a championship playoff game.
Lefty (Chicago)
I never, never, never bet against Aaron Rodgers. I hope he gets sacked 6 times and throws 4 picks, 2 of which are returned for TDs .by the Niners. That said I still wouldn’t bet against him.
Joe Carr (Peeksill)
Any thought to mentioning what day these games are being played in addition to the time?
Dolly Patterson (Silicon Valley)
Niners will go all the way to become Superbowl champs this year! They deserve it.
Ted (Florida)
@Dolly Patterson: Silicon Valley and Football, well yeah they’ve got all the money, just hard to picture. Santa Clara Techies, now that would be an appropriate name, whatever, they should be stripped of the SanFrancisco logo, nobody from San Francisco went beyond Palo Alto for anything unless on their way to Pebble Beach back in the day of the real San Francisco, plus do the Yorks still own them, do they ever leave Youngstown.
Paul (Los Angeles)
Of all the stats, the fact that the 49ers crushed the Packers, really destroyed them by an enormously high score differential (with home field advantage this Sunday), is the main thing going into Sunday that predicts a 49er victory. Things may turn out differently as they frequently do, but, honestly, I don't see how one can PREDICT anything but a 49er victory.
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
Niners are the best of the NFL and should win not only this game against the Pack, but the whole enchilada. The Titans are playing throw-back ball. They can, could, might upset the Chiefs. Henry can crew up ground and clock, it should be a good one to watch.
Michel Forest (Montréal, QC)
@ Blue in Green I like your screen name, because I think it’s a reference to the Miles Davis tune. Am I right? That said, I agree with you: the Niners should win it all.
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
@Michel Forest Bill Evans actually wrote it, but the original credit reads Davis-Evans.
John Brown (Washington D.C.)
@Blue in Green How can we be talking about football when this country is in crisis??? We have devolved into a banana republic, Trump has robbed us of our civil liberties and here we are talking about football?? What is wrong with you people??
