I think this story is trying to show us that no matter what happens you should always keep trying. there is always a little hope left.
Mia Finelli (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
This film hangs heavy on my soul. The story of this family is a heartbreaking truth for them and many other families alike. It is a story of hope, and loss, and strength, and uncertainty. The family being reunited is a glimpse of light in a long dark tunnel. The fact that they were separated in the first place is puzzling to me. I can't imagine being separated from all that I know in the name of what? Protocol? American pride? The US immigration system is a disgrace. How dare we boast about the so called "american dream" only to turn around and deny entry to those who trust our judgement? Who are we to claim deserving of everything our country has to offer over others? How can we see the suffering of others and not welcome them with open arms? How can the 3rd largest and self proclaimed richest country in the world not have enough to spare for a few others? We pride ourselves on american hospitality, but where was that when Darlin and her family were separated.
Emma McLaughlin (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
This was a very powerful film, it showed fear, hope, and bravery. The family fought to be together again even after there was little hope. When they were talking about how the little boy just got taken away with no questions, it was really hard to hear. I know that this is what happens but it was hard to hear from a real family. The parts where the family came together was very touching, but it really makes you think. In their situation the place they were from was really unsafe, the United States was their best option, but it still wasn't very good for them. They were seperated creating an emotional boundary between them. The father could not bear being separated from his family and even talked about killing himself. This immigration policy is not ok, the toll that it takes on families that have no other option is unjust, there has to be a better way.
Victoria Fey (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
This film was really eye opening for me because I didn't fully know how awful the process of immigration is for those who go through it. All they want is a better future for their family and they get separated because of it. Throughout the film, all I could think about was how Darlin’s family is just one out of thousands trying to find a better life in America. The US immigration system needs some major changes, and I think the separation of families should be the first one. I can’t even imagine being as young as Hamilthon on my own in a foreign country and not being able to speak the language. I felt so happy for them once they were all together again and could start a new life, but their fight isn’t over yet. As it said at the end of the film, Darlin and her family still have to go to court and get approved to work, while at the same time trying to give Hamilthon a normal life and be there for him.
Emma McLaughlin (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
@Victoria Fey I agree it really does make you think about the toll this system takes on thousand of families. This is a messed up system.

The effect of U.S. detention policy on families is separating each one of them, they are being forced to be taken away from each other and to stay inside a jail-like building, making that building prison for those who were set there taken away from their relatives. In the film called ¨Darlin¨, the film is focusing on the view of the main character ¨Darlin¨ as she is waiting for her son and her husband that are being held for detention, serving time in the detention building as the debt in their attempt to a better life. This sort of story happens over and over again, the fact that there are just millions of children and adults and even babies held as prisoners to serve their time before being released, waiting to reunite with their relatives and start a better life from what they left behind.
Rachel (New Technology High School)
What is the effect of U.S. detention policy on immigrant families? They get separated when all they want is a better future for their family and especially their children because most parents want the best for their children and they see the U.S as an opportunity for that. But when immigrant families decide to come to the U.S they take a risk of being caught which is what happened to Darlin's family, the husband is put in the U.S detention and not maybe having the chance to be with his wife and child but being sent back to Honduras. The kid is sent to Darlin without having his father and him having a traumatized moment because he was separated from one of his parents. I would say that the effect of the U.S detention policy is breaking families that just want a better future for their children and themselves.
Sean Hession (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
This film had a profound effect on me. Multiple moments conveyed the extreme emotion involved with immigration, but the most notable of these was when Darlin was reunited with her son who was unfairly ripped away from her. This event is so heartwarming, yet tragic. It is a reminiscent of scenes when veterans come home greeted by ecstatic family members. However, this moment is tainted by sadness for Darlin because her husband is still trapped in detention. One thing that surprised me was that the family was able to reunite. That a viewer of this accurate film has to wonder whether an innocent, tightly-bound family will ever be whole again shows how dysfunctional the U.S.'s policy on immigration is. Immigrants should never be torn from their loved ones, just as citizens of the U.S. should never be taken from their loved ones. From this film, I take the message "Treat others as you would like to be treated". Immigration officials should not separate families, as they would certainly dislike if such a thing happened to them. I still have the question of why Darlin's husband was held for so long. This film relates to my life because I have been separated from my parents when I was young and they went on a long trip. I felt as if they would never return and was extremely worried. I now understand that is how all families who are separated feel, and it is truly terrible. With this in mind, I make a plea to all to attempt to help families like Darlin's be able to reunite.
Victoria Fey (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Sean Hession I was wondering why Darlin's husband was held for so long too, while she and Hamilthon were sent to the US. I also agree with you that the US immigration system needs to change their policies on separating families-I never knew how awful it was until I saw it for myself watching this film.
Deysi (Florida)
The U.S. detention policy affects immigrant families because families are being separated. Young children are being separated from their mom and dad, and are taken to different areas of the detention center from where they are located. The policy is not quite working as a deterrent as the Trump administration claims because some immigrants are being released. A moment that stood out to me was then the father had said that he has not seen his son for a month after he was taken away from him. I couldn’t imagine what the father was going through not knowing if his son was ok throughout that period of time. Overall this film club was very touching. This is just one of the many cases that happen everyday and it's sad to see how young children have to live through this. They are being taken to new countries for a new opportunity and most of the time they are detained.
Steven Aldana (Florida)
The U.S. detention policy isn't working. It affects immigrant families by separating them and then you end up having kids who grow up without a father or mother and sometimes even without both. It isn't a deterrent like President Trump said because more and more people keep flowing in from the border. I feel really bad for these people that they're separated from their family numbers and may not see them ever again. It really hit me when I saw the father come back and how happy the kid was. This film really let me and others know how bad the situation is at the border and how these families suffer. They really separate families without telling them or even letting them say goodbye. The kids who go through this situation will leave a traumatic experience in their lives and they'll never forget it. I believe they should make a better policy that actually works because families shouldn't be torn apart and it's also not stopping people from crossing the border.
Kyndall Bass (Apopka,Fl)
This video shows how sad the world we live in is, people should not be forced out of their homes because they are afraid of the police that are supposed to be protecting them. immigrant families leave their home countries because something bad might be happening there, like Darlin's situation. It is also sad that they are trying to escape something bad and in America, there is still no help, they just get separated from their families which is all they have. We can see that the little boy was so happy to just get school supplies and new shoes, but was even more excited when he found out that his father was going to be coming back. One of the saddest parts for me was when the father said he did not know what happened to his son for a month and a half. I could never imagine going through something like this but I know Darlin and her family had a lot of hope and strength to get through this, and everyone else going through this has to have a lot of hope too.
Sean Hession (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Kyndall Bass You make a good point that immigrants are only trying to escape violence and injustice and simply come across more of it in the United States.
Lindsey Chestney (Florida)
The U.S. detention policy affects immigrant families because it separates their family, even if they have children. It could make the children grow up without a parent. It does not seem like this policy is actually working as a deterrent like Trump said because people are still coming. It stood out to me when the mother went to the airport for her son. It also stood out to me when the dad got home from the place because of how excited the son got. I never really knew much about the detention policy for the immigrants until this video. Questions I still have are why would people take the children away from their parents without any warning. I would think they would at least give them time to get their kids somewhere or something. I can not relate to this video but I do feel bad for the people who have to deal with this policy because it seems like a very traumatic experience especially for children who have to be broken away from their parents.

This week's film club was great and very interesting, it was the type of story that can be happy but sad at the same time and that's how it let me. What surprised me the most about the film is that it was in Spanish, I've never seen a Spanish film club and I hope to see more maybe one about Cuba by any chance? But I have many questions like if the mom, dad, and son all got separated? Would it even be legal to do so? Will this affect the kid in his future? Do they still have problems with the government? How are they doing now? How old is the kid and many other questions. I've heard about these things and about people from Honduras trying to come to the United States, so it was a familiar topic. It was a delightful and fascinating story and I'm glad I saw it.
Aliyah X. (Florida)
This film was absolutely riveting. The U.S detention policy can separate families and drive them to suicide, just like Hamilton’s father almost did. I do not think this policy is actually working as a deterrent as the Trump administration claims because most people immigrating to the United States illegally are desperate enough to risk getting detained, as shown in this film. A moment in the film that stood out for me was when Hamilton’s father called Darlin and said he was going to ask the detention center to deport him. I believe this shows that he was so miserable in the detention center and so unsure about his future that he couldn’t stand it anymore. It really surprised me when Darlin told the administrative woman at Hamilton’s new school that his father was in the detention center and she was unfazed as if it happened to her new students frequently. I can’t even begin to imagine how Hamilton’s father felt when they took his son away from him, and how it possibly be legal to do so. The fact that whoever did this didn’t even have the decency to tell him where they were taking his son is shocking. One question I still have: Did Darlin’s family get denied asylum and deported?

What is the effect of U.S. detention policy on immigrant families? The effect that u.s. detention policy has on immigrant families is the separation and the families get sad and miss whoever is being held in there
Jaime (New tech)
What is the effect of U.S. detention policy on immigrant families? The effects that this has on immigrant families is the separation that they go through and they feel sadness, ontop of that they don't really get informed that their family member is being taken.
Ashley NT (California)
The effect of U.S detention policy on immigrant families creates traumatic situations which in turn can create future mental health issues such as PTSD and depression and can increase the likelihood of mental brain development growth in children which stunts the way one learns. Furthermore, the treatment of detainees is inhumane which is explained by the father after he is released.
Gianni Caeleb Smalls (Wekiva High School)
"Darlin", a saddening yet powerful 16 minute video about a family being broken apart by the U.S. It shows us that immigrants are being held under racist policies disguised under upholding the law and protecting U.S. citizens. This policy breaks apart immigrant families in search of a better future, away from their original country. It surprised me to hear that the father of the child was ready to be deported to escape the detention center, to abandon his wife and kid, he even said that he wanted to commit suicide just in order to get out! I still have to ask though, what happened after the video ended. I wonder if they experienced the happy ending that they rightfully deserve, or did they get deported. The film shown today is a heartbreaking film that shows how much immigrant families are damaged and why this policy should be abolished since it is beyond inhumane.

The boy was separated from his dad who was in a dentition center. The boy was crying because he couldn't see his dad. When the boy saw his dad he was very energetic. It's sad to see family's get separated. Why would anyone ever separate a child from it parents. It can cause many problems in the child's life.
Jaime NT (Napa Ca)
Its sad that this is a real thing. Parents have to live with fear that they can be picked up at any time and could possibly never see their kids again. Most people come to have a better life but trump does not see it that way.
Estrella (CA)
I find the policy very confusing. Darlin would be so stressed because she didn't know when her husband was getting released, they wouldn't say anything. It was scary seeing her husband want to give up his life. Who knows what the little boy and the father went through since they are in-between age gaps. Darlin wouldn't want her son going through the same thing she went through because she was separated from her father for 15 years! I'm just glad that the family is whole again and I'm glad the little boy is getting a better education for a better future.
Truc (Apopka)
Darlin and her family are one of many immigrants families affected by the United States detention policy. This policy separates many young immigrant children from their parents and the detention areas for adults can cause them suffering for long unknown periods of time. Just as the Trump administration has claimed: the detention areas are a deterrent for immigrants and do cause many to rethink their decision of coming to America, however if the immigrant has a strong motivation like Hamilthon’s father, who wanted to be reunited with his family, they will be able to preserve. Darlin and her family came to the United States to achieve a better life than the ones they had in Honduras and even though they have faced setbacks and challenges caused by the United States government, she still holds a firm belief that deciding to stay in the United States would be for the better. I was surprised to hear that the father was not able to learn about his own child’s whereabouts for over an entire month. I could not imagine the amount of stress that he has gone through. This film club was touching and concerning all at once, the future for this family is still uncertain, but their outlook is bright and I personally hope that they will be granted asylum so they can live their lives in the United States.

I feel like one of the moments was the shopping one where they go to Walmart it made me feel like I was going through there situation it made me feel I was living in there situation. This is a situation I probably went through back when I was small. I was surprised by how I was able to understand there Spanish. It just made me realize that many people can have the privilege of having things and others are less fortunate and to just be grateful for what you have. I have watched and heard many situations like this and just being able to picture these situations felt so real. I feel like this is something my past family has gone through
Selena NTH (California)
The movie was really good but touching and the part where they hugged each other at the airport after being separated was a great scene. Also how it just impacted the whole family and how touchy it is to explain and see. Something that surprised me was how well he's doing in school and the dad did come back after a chance he took because he didn't want to be stuck there anymore. The emotions I took away from this film was sadness, relatable. A message I took out this was some people don't have part of their family sometimes as we think and we need to cherish your time together honestly. A connection I saw with this film and my life is that I know how emotional it is for families and how scary it is to worry about because my best of friends has been in this situation and I was there the whole time.
Tadjina (FL)
It's bad you never really know what goes on with immigration unless your affected or know somebody affected. The policy that the Trump administrators have enforced is affecting family relations. 5 months without your family, what could really be going on in those detention camps they keep people in. The Trump administration say it's for the best but does it really. Months to enter a state with the risk that you might get deported back because of what? Your skin color? People really think that race doesn't play a role in stuff like these. It was never a part of the video that stood out it was the whole video. We all know about detention camps but can we imagine the pain. The pain of separation, of the lack of freedom. Tear after tears of trying to build a better life for you only to be torn down by  trying. If i had a question i would ask "Why do people allow this." People watch the NEWS, the news cover these type of stuff, yet where are the protest the fight. The people who can do something about but i guess it doesn't matter as long as its not them, they are ok with it
Jaime (New tech)
@Tadjina I agree you don't really get informed about this type of stuff and its bad
Molli D. (Orlando, Florida)
Darlin and her family were separated because of the U.S. detention policy on immigrant families. The father was taken to a detention center for five months and the mother was in one for two. This family was separated from the unknown of their future lingering as the days passed on. When Darlin's son was finally united with his mother there still was separation from the father and there was little to no information on his state and whether he's being released. This whole story is very traumatic and is almost cruel in the way that families are separated with no knowledge of their future, with no one to turn to and defenseless against the future. The little boy will grow up with this emotion in this past that instills an attitude towards the country that he's currently living in. Although I know little about the policy and the specific reasons behind it, it does appear to be showing discrimination and unfair communication. The boy will always know what the United States did to his family even if it was for half a year the family will always remember. I believe that doing what's right for a nation is fair but to inflict harm emotional and physical to immigrant families anywhere should be reconciled. There's always a balance in all situations to protect a nation and harm possible citizens, to create a family yet tear apart many for those coming to the country isn't the balance that shows justice.
Breona Campbell (Orlando, FL)
Darlin, her son Hamithon and her husband were illegal immigrants. Where they live the police discriminate against people of color. The son and the husband got picked by ICE at three or four in the morning. This all happened while Darlin was in Mexico. She then got a call saying that her son was at the airport. When she arrived they greeted each other with a big hug. This was an awe/relieving moment for me because I was happy that they were reunited. I just can’t image being separated from my family and taken early in the morning. While Hamilthon was away, he learned some english in his first grade class. He always wondered when his father was going to get released. Everytime he called he would ask “is he coming back?”. While away, his father was doing some ‘crazy’ things because he was scared. After a long wait, Darlin received a call saying that the father was released and that they need to come to pick him up. Hamilthon was the first to reconnect with him. This film made me thing of the struggles that people go through on the daily and the fact that they always have to worry because they never know whats going to happen to them.
Aniya W (FL)
This film was emotional, of course in today's world the U.S detention policy has been a wide discussion and many people have their different views and perspectives on this situation. A moment that stood out to me was when the mother finally reunited with her son, this is really happening in America, these families are being separated against their will and having to be kept fro each other for months. It's hard for me to hear about these situations because I can't imagine the pain they are going through, I can never imagine being taken away from my family like that. This immigrant policy is obviously not fair to these families, we are talking about children, young or older being taken away from their mom and dad for months maybe even years, this has to change, I don't think these U.S officials see or even think of the pain that these families go through.
Joselyn (Florida)
After watching this film, one thing that stood out to me was when his dad got released from the dentention facility and he was back with his family. It stood out to me because I thought it was nice when he was reunited with his son and wife. I was surprised when the dad said he was going to request to be deported because I thought he was going to wait until he could be with his family. Something I took away from this was that sometimes we need to be patient. The boys dad was patient and he was reunited with his family and they will be able to have a btter life in the US. I can relate being patient to my own life because sometimes I'm unpatient. Overall I think this film can teach people some good lessons and it has a good message.
Brandon (Fl)
U.S immigration policies put families in precarious situations. In this film, Jefry(the father) is separated from his family for 5 and a half months. I would say that Trump's claims of these policies working as a deterrent are split. This family put with it, because they had contact with each other. However, I would not blame a family being willingly deported just to be with family or friends. This emotion gives off emotion to the 3rd degree. It is honestly a rush, experiencing all of them in just 16 minutes. It leaves me asking, "why?" There is little reason to support separating a family for longer than a month at a time, if at all. I am left clueless as to why this was the case.
Esperanza (Florida)
The effect on U.S. detention policy on immigrant are that families are being separated and some aren't able to reunite. What I learned from this story is that don't take life for granted and always have faith/hope in GOD for him to do you justice. It is sad to see how people are being separated from their families and kids. Kids could be growing up without their mom or dad. What stood out to me the most was how Darlin was able to change his mindset from negative to positive. You always have to talk to GOD and it might be a long process for your life to get better but never give up on him.

This video was seeing the struggles that immigrants goes through on how they get separated from there family. The U.S detention policy has a bad effect on immigrant families by bringing them apart and them hoping along with waiting to see if there family member would come back and when. This policy is just wrong this family just wanted to live a good life together. The moment in the film that stood out to me was when the son was explaining to his mom how his father got taken away from him. His emotions were really strong and you could tell how sad he was. This policy is just sad to see but lucky the family reunited and will thrive.
mia (earth)
the effect of the united states detention policy on immigrant families is that they can separate families and most of the time they do not know how long they can be taken away and be staying in the detention center. what surprised me was how long the dad did not know what happened to his son for over a month and that the dad was in the detention center for over five months which is a very long time to barely communicate with your family and not know what is happening or what is going to happen to you or what your family is going to do. moments that stood out for me was when the son got really excited when he overheard his mom calling his dad and hearing that his dad was going to be home in a few hours and then they finally saw each other after such a long time.
jazmin (apopka)
This film club was very touching. It speaks on a sensitive topic and displays how much impact the U.S detention policies have on families that don't deserve to be seperated. The man and son were devastated when they were seperated. They had this ongoing wonder if the whole family will be together or not again. The mother was lucky to be reunited with her son. She wanted her son to grow up with his dad and didn't know if they were ever going to see the dad again. i would be so hurt if my family were forced to seperate. This family is strong for going through this and no family deserves to be deported and separated from the ones they love the most.
Crystal Z. (Apopka, FL)
The effect of U.S detention policy on immigrant families is very sad and families go through a lot while being in this.  Something that really stands out to me in this film is how the son was affected through this entire process. The son got experience new things when coming to America and his mom just wanted the best for him. I have seen things like this happen to people I know an it brings a lot stress into the family sometimes dividing them. Once they make it to America they still have many legal things they have to resolve. It is not just the legal things that affect them it's also coming to a new country and culture and having to go through many firsts again.  They have to learn new languages and get use to the people. The atmosphere in America is very different from what they are use to in Honduras.
carlie abdool (florida)
One effect is loosing your child when crossing over and worrying where they're going and if the father get caught then the child is going to grow up without a father figure and the mom is going to miss her husband nd thw saqme for the mom. The detention policy isn't really working because he family misses that person and they are only trying to live a better life. the moments that stood out to me was when they all reunited because its a happy moment. the emotions i got was sad, happy and mad because the family was sad that they were all separated and they got mad at points because they wanted to see each other and the dad couldn't take it and suggested to be deported and the wife didnt like that and the happy moments was when they all got back together.Question i still have is why it took so long and what did they do t get him out. i cant really make a connection to this video.

This story touches my heart and I hope it is better for them here. The part where the boy was riding the bike with the mom and said that the only thing that he was missing was his dad was so cute. Then, in the end, it showed them all together and the boy is riding the bike than both of the parents where helping him was the thing that stud out to me the most. This stood out to me because it was a nice family moment and it was so cute. this film brought me a lot of emotions like at the beginning I felt sad that the boy was growing up without his father but then, in the end, they were together again and gets to stay with him. I also have the question of what made him get out to go te the detention center?
Stephanie (Apopka)
The U.S detention policy breaks families apart and causes heartbreak until they are reunited again. There are so many kids who get greatly affected if both parents go to immigration detention centers. When Darlin’ got to see her son again, she was so happy because she wasn’t able to see him. The father as still at the detention center and the son desperately wanted to see him. When he got out, the son got so excited and that moment really hit me showing that the U.S. doesn’t care if they are breaking the family but not realizing that they are hurting a child’s future. Some families aren’t as lucky as this one, growing up with both immigrant parents in the house trying to provide a better future for the child and themselves. Some get deported back, even with the child because they don’t want to separate which is depressing knowing that the government knows they are breaking families apart but still continuing to do what they are doing.
Dominic (FL)
This film was insane! It is very sad that the dad got caught by immigration police and how deeply it impacted his family. A Lot of my friends have family members that are immigrants. The part where she hugged him in the air port was really touching, so emotional. They have to find simple joys to fill their time with, and the child is doing well in school and is really trying well. The goal is to try no matter what, no matter how hard life gets never stop trying. The father had to undergo extreme depression and push through for his family and a better life.
