Re the boy carrying surfboard in Dakar: while he may well be walking along the "shore" methinks it’s definitely not a "beach".
Steve (Maryland)
Articles such as this with its beautiful array of photographs is why I continue to subscribe to the wonderful NY Times. In fact, 2019 has been an excellent year for the Times. I thank you all.
Kitchen Ratz (Orange Walk, Belize)
We were reminded of 19th century impressionist paintings as we viewed the photo of Bouilon Julien.
Herman Krieger (Eugene, Oregon)
I spent week wandering around Havana with an old fashion folding roll film camera. The results of, "See See Havana", can be seen at: www.efn.org/~hkrieger/cuba.htm
gerard (france)
There is much more than Paris in France.
Diana (Cincinnati)
I was diagnosed with ALS nine months ago and am no longer able to travel great distances. I am immensely grateful to the NYT for articles and photos like these that make it possible for me to "visit" places I'll never be able to see in person. And, yes, there is some comfort in knowing that by using my laptop to "travel," I am contributing a bit less to the burning of fossil fuels.
Al (Chicago)
@Diana As someone who can't get out into nature, check out Adventure Archives on Youtube. It's a breath of fresh air, a hike from a laptop.
Miss Anne Thrope (Utah)
Stay home. The Fossil Fuels you burn while traveling to see these places is destroying them. Oh yeah, plus it'll make the lives of your beloved kids and grandkids that much more miserable. Rules have changed, our environment can no longer afford burning Fossil Fuels for Ego Travel.
Marlene (Canada)
@Miss Anne Thrope if people did that, we wouldn't have these gorgeous photos.
frank john (Canada)
@Marlene I’m sorry, but Miss Thrope is right. As in a lot of professions we will have to leave travelling (including so-called business trips) up to a few professional photographers. With the new technology, we can all see the “real” thing through “reality googles” which make it seem that you are there. Air travel for tourism will soon be outlawed, --if politicians have the guts -- for tourists. New technology for business meetings via conference meetings will also negate travel for those people. Travel locally, hike, bike. Air travel must soon be rationed if we want to survive beyond the next 10 years.

I was just at the Russell House in Charleston. I would say they kind of want you to know enslaved people lived there. Handled as an after-thought. I have lived in the South but Charleston managed to shock me and wake me up. After that trip, I fully support reparations for the descendants of enslaved persons. That staircase is truly beautiful, however.
Al (Idaho)
Thanks. One of the good things about everybody on earth having a camera with them is that with so many shots being taken there are bound to be many good ones, of beautiful places. It makes me want to be there. The other good thing it proves is that the aliens haven't landed. Somebody would have taken a picture.
Nancy (Charlottesville, Virginia)
@Al This makes me laugh as I've noticed that incidents of alien abductions and sightings are way down now that everyone carries a camera with their phone. Same goes for Bigfoot, Abominable Snowman, Loch Ness Monster and most likely National Enquirer sales.
tjsiii (Gainesville, FL)
Yes ! Thank you for sharing - to the NY Times and these great photographers.
LJMerr (Taos, NM)
Beautiful photos, beautiful places. Thanks for reminding us that there are such things in the world. (I particularly love the one of the langur.)
Maurice Goudeau (Cape Town South Africa)
Having moved to South Africa in August after a visit in February, I can say that I have not seen any photos from your 52 places that are remotely as beautiful as many places in and around Cape Town. I’m not sure why South Africa did not make the list, but if you do another “places” article I would highly recommend this part of the world.
Alex (Paris, FR)
@Maurice Goudeau They do a 52 places article each year. Cape Town was on the 52 places list in 2014.
Raye (Seattle)
Thank you for these beautiful photos of places near and very far. Warning: I'm about to get pedantic. One of the captions includes this: "It’s spiral stairs are regarded as one of the most architecturally significant details in Charleston..." It's just that punctuation errors like this undermine the experience of admiring the photos and fantasizing about being at these places.
Me (Midwest)
@Raye OOOh! Painful. Good catch.
iw (Seattle)
@Raye Interesting! I was just about to point this out as well. The NYT represents the best there is in journalism, encompassing images and words. So it's surprising and disturbing to encounter this ubiquitous error that assaults us daily in as distinguished a paper as the NYT.
Raye (Seattle)
@iw Hey, you and @Me, the NYT fixed the "It's"! Readers CAN have an impact (OK, a small one, but still...!) Thank you, NYT!
