The fact that this 'surprises' people is exactly why the cartel issue will never be reolved. Pro-tip AMLO is 100% on the cartels' payroll. The vast majority of local politicians are on the cartels' payroll. Most journalists and news organizations are on the cartels' payroll. Furthermore, everybody, who isn't on the cartels payroll, is petrified of the cartel anyways, so they are effectively on the cartels' payroll. Wake up people...

How ironic is it that he was investigated, arrested and will be tried and serve his prison time in the USA

It's fairy easy to see in Mexico, here and worldwide. Civil servants that have millions if not billions of dollars based on a lifetime of meager salary. Putin may be the richest person in the world with a projected 100 billion dollars of holdings. Pretty impressive as his salary over his lifetime has probably averaged 30k a year. How about senators who enter service seemingly middle class and leave very wealthy? It seems that the gifts, speaking engagements, etc. dwarf their actual salary. Is that what the founding fathers intended? Is all that money without influence?

Scary. I'm not worried, though, 'cuz I know that surely "It Can't Happen Here."

"Then there were those who found confirmation that the whole apparatus of Mexico’s government was once and forever corrupt." Consider me one of those . . .

Considering how close the maelstrom is to our borders, it is disappointing that establishment media have, largely, turned a blind eye to Mexico. "Refugees," yes--lots of compassion--and ink. The daily incidents of cartel violence, not so much. Another news service on the web--it shall be nameless--has almost daily dispatches from the civil war raging in Northern Mexico. Daily. But for the Manhattan media, paying close attention to Mexico risks giving credence to President Trump's observations about the failing state to our south. Can't let that happen! Truth is: Mexico is now in a full-tilt civil war between gangs with guns (government v. cartels). The government has lost the essential basis of its power: the monopoly of deadly force. We should all be paying far more attention.

I am glad that the arrest of Mr. García Luna was made en Dallas. If it had occurred in México, he will had been freed almost instantly by the most discredited "amparo" (protection) used by all the powerful criminals to avoid prosecution. Many of the judges are also in the pockets of the cartels, and the criminals know it. There is really not justice en México. Period.

Why should this be shocking? Corruption in Mexico runs so deep that it would be shocking if he wasn’t taking bribes. And in a country where bribes are the lifeblood that makes commerce work—from the Very rich to the very poor, it will take a very long time to change the culture.

Who could possibly be "astonished" by this news ? Based on our insatiable appetite for drugs, Mexico's best bet would be to offer peace terms to the cartels and turn over the day-to-day operations of the country to them. They seem to have a knack for figuring out how to get things done. Could it be any worse?

Congratulations to all involved. Well done! Kind reminder, like they say back in the old country: the dog does not bark without the master's permission. Follow the trail, as expresident Fox was for sure getting his stipend from this money landfall. I can't wait to see that guy behind bars as well.
