Your observations about Rep. Chabot are misguided. He is a presidential lap dog.
Gustavo (Hoboken)
“Key members”? How about a bunch of partisan clowns.
J Brian (Lake Wylie)
Pick your metaphor for the latest folly: either today’s an attempt to spackle over all the holes in the Dems’ organized hatefest, or it’s simply more lipstick on the same old pig.

The news from Capitol Hill is that Jerry's committee didn't get this mess, this chunk of flotsam because he got too excited and embarrassed the party with earlier rants about this American President. Perhaps he took a chill pill? But he has no more evidence, so his committee is the best place for this entire fantasy trip to die. If the Constitution is to be respected, the Democrats' panic at how this has gone will end for a censure before Christmas break. What an embarrasing three years for what used to be our majority party. But at LEAST the Democrats got to do it to themselves.

Why wasn’t the Republicans’ lawyer included in the list?

We are at the beginning of a 3 step process; discovery which is enhanced by sworn testimony and expert witnesses. Then indictment (impeachment) by the House followed by trial in the Senate. Even if one of the last 2 steps falter, the discovery process will produce more facts and evidence to flesh out the issues of Trumps incompetency and the GOP's dereliction of duty to govern for the Nov 2020 election. It could energize people to vote, especially the young, educated and minorities whose interests and futures are being trashed. Turnout is everything.

The Judicial Committee’s counsel and “legal constitutional experts, not to mention the Committee’s Chairman don’t represent the country’s values, ethics and goals. We’re a big country and must be well represented, not just by New Yorkers - not overfly states.
Bonnie (Cleveland)
@Ted I don't think Steve Chabot and Jim Jordan even represent Ohio's "values, ethics and goals." I hope most of us, wherever we live, would agree that election interference is wrong. Republicans may not think it is "impeachable" but the fact that they apparently think it is just fine is NOT in accord with those "values, ethics, and goals."

So Doug Collins is a “Fast-talking, ambitious and a fierce defender of the president”. It’s too bad that he isn’t as fierce defender of the Constitution. That is what he is supposed to be. That’s the problem with the entire Republican Party. It’s all Party, power and money to them.

I hope Jerry Nadler surprises me, in the very best way. It will be terrific if he does as good a job as did Adam Schiff. Dems, please don't screw this up.
J Brian (Lake Wylie)
@ChesBay Way too late to hope that.

All the matters is what the Republicans decide to do. Everyone knows exactly what happened and exactly how wrong it was. There could have been an impeachment vote on Ukraine months ago. (Or on other topics years ago.) The only reason that we are having this careful, long, deliberate process is for hoping that there might be a crack in the wall of Republican partisanship. The facts are abundantly clear. So far, Republican stonewalling and fictionalizing about what happened have also been abundantly clear. I doubt that it will happen, but I am hoping that some of the Republicans mentioned here and elsewhere in Congress will find their conscience. But my lungs are not holding their breath waiting for the Republican backs to become strong.

The House Impeachment Panel has indeed been involved in proceedings against 3 presidents (Andrew Johnson was impeached before the committee existed). None of them were convicted by The Senate, and they remained in office. I guess heavy use of social media isn’t enough. You still gotta vote!
Braden (Indiana)
@stevevelo The House Judiciary Committee was, in fact, involved in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, as the committee was created in 1813, and Andrew Johnson's impeachment process began 55 years later in 1868. There is no such thing as the House Impeachment Panel.

@Braden - you’re correct! Thanks for the reminder!
