Diabetes in Mothers Raises Heart Risks in Children

Thin, active people with healthy diets still get diabetes. I walked every day at lunch, ate an unprocessed diet, weighed my carbs, exercised regularly and walked up 40-50 flights of stairs most nights after dinner. I still needed insulin during both my pregnancies. Diabetes is exhausting. Sometimes genetics are stronger than lifestyle choices.

The way a mother "earns" Type 2 diabetes is by consistently eating the lousy Standard American Diet. No mysteries there. For the poor unfortunate fetuses in their wombs during pregnancy, the horrible nutrition their mother is consuming of course goes straight though to them. Getting beyond that, the far greater threat to the children of Type 2 diabetes mothers is that said mothers will pass on their poor eating habits/dietary choices to their kids, who will be affected by this "education" for the rest of their lives. There's the heart risk you OUGHT to be worried about. In short, when you see obese, unhealthy, diabetic, heart disease ridden parents with obese, unhealthy, diabetic, heart disease ridden children, what they share across generations is not genetics but their lousy diets. The good news is that even if your parents were imbeciles in terms of their diets and lifestyle choices, YOU don't have to be. Genetics is the gun; it's YOUR diet and lifestyle choices that pull the trigger.

the high incidence of other diseases of westernized diet or Standard American Diet ( SAD) in children with mothers with diabetes may be likely not because of their mother's diabetes but because of the DIET of all. Mothers with diabetes eating an animal food, processed predominant diet likely feed their children the same. It is time for doctors to sound the alarm. Your chidlren are like you and have the same diseases because they eat what you eat. and by the way CARBS do not cause DIABETES. High amounts of Saturated fats are the cause. Eat a WHOLE FOOD PLANT BASED DIET and see wonders happen

Mothers with diabetes got diabetes by killing their pancreatic beta cells by stressing them with lots of carbs (dietary glucose). Mothers with heart disease got heart disease by eating lots of carbs (bad, glucose) and sugar (worse, fructose) causing their livers to produce VLDLs which caused small, dense LDLs which penetrated their artery walls, eventuating in arterial plaque. These mothers who ate high carb, high sugar diets fed their kids high carb, high sugar diets and taught their kids to feed themselves (and their kids) high carb, high sugar diets. It’s cultural epidemiology.

@charlierf - Your response is totally inapplicable to the mothers who have Type 1 Diabetes which is an auto-immune disease not affected in any way by one’s nutritional intake or exercise regimen. Type 1 Diabetics play no role in “giving themselves” diabetes.

@C Kim Yes C Kim, your point is well made, but type 2 diabetics far outnumber type 1, controlling the results of a statistical study like this one.
