I learned as a child that most jerks have very few friends and the few they manage to make soon tire of their jerk behavior. I am not surprised. Only the people dependent on Trump for a job, for money, for power, etc. "like" him. Most others get as far away as soon as possible.
Don Siracusa (stormville ny)
What a Jerk! Is there any rational person in the entire United States who does not believe our President is off the rails and will head us into a war or marshall law of some sought. There is a medical term for people like our President perhaps more than one.
Vicki Farrar (Albuquerque, NM)
They don't like you? Maybe you can cozy up with Kim for Christmas. He says he has a gift for you.
Andrew (MA)
These are the lamest hot mic incidents. On the spectrum of what people might say about this idiotic president when they think no one’s listening, these comments were extremely mild. Of course trump is such a petulant toddler that he had to make it a big deal.
Paul Cc (Bronx)
This is good. American politicians are too cowed by the (gerrymandered) power of Trump supporters to call him out as a bully, a coward, and an idiot. European leaders should be publicly united in calling him out as all three; show the world that he's a fraud and maybe save the U.S.A. in the process.
OC (Wash DC)
Trump comes off as a sore loser because he has the emotional mein of a six year old when his precious ego perceives itself being slighted. He makes fools of the voters of this country every time he opens his self obsessed mouth.
Candice B (Boston)
We are a national laughingstock....
Sydney (Chicago)
The only people in our world population of 7.7 billion NOT laughing at Trump are his 65 million worshippers who believe that he's God Almighty.
Hector (Bellflower)
I bet that Bibi isn't laughing.
Gary (Raleigh, NC)
The president is a fool; this fact was obvious before he ran for office.
Jerome (Edmonton, Alberta)
The fact that Trump would have the gall to call anyone two-faced shows that he's not really in touch with reality. He's among one of the most pathetic human beings on the planet. Most people in Canada and around the world know it. Trudeau and the other NATO leaders know it all too well. They are polite and just bite their tongues most of the time when they are around him. Just because some toothless, uneducated moron from one of the southern states thinks he's God, doesn't mean that the rest of the world does. He's a jerk.
Confused (Atlanta)
Whether I like him or not Trump is my President and was elected by the people of the country. These so called world leaders are certainly not very diplomatic and all owe Trump an apology. Trump can be very unforgiving and this little snafu might come back to haunt them. Does the world so quickly forget that no other country in the world has done more for the world than the United States?
G Rayns (London)
Trump has a ready answer to the question of military spending by the USA. Cut it in half. Trouble is, Draft-evader Donald no longer looks such a tough guy!
Jhs (Richmond)
Our President....behaving like a big insecure child, who picked up his “bat and ball” and went home. Seems his personal charms , or more likely lack thereof , did not impress the other leaders of nations in the G7. So he got upset and left. Is this the person we want representing our country on the world stage. Is this the person we want as a leader and defender of the Constitution, a document he clearly does not understand. I do feel bad for him , and this country , that we have to go through this degree of political and personal trauma. For sure..most politicians are probably not all honest and forthright. But DJT spends more time deluding himself and thinking we all are unaware of his issues. He is trying to do a job he is not the least bit qualified to manage. And the worst aspects of his damaged personality have shown themselves on a regular basis. The presidency of the united State....a very unique and important job with small man trying to fill the position.
mikekev56 (Drexel Hill PA)
Prior to Trump, the world was not laughing at the US, which this article failed to mention, letting Trump’s assertion stand unchallenged. It is not biased journalism to call out lies.
Joseph (Austin)
Finally, we have a President that stands up for America.
Human (NYC)
As much as I enjoyed this, there are two issues: 1) this should be at least cringe-worthy if not embarrassing for all Americans, and 2) let’s not make Trump feel too too bad. Recall the 2011 WH Correspondent’s dinner (on the eve of the Bin Laden raid). He was so belittled, he decided to run for President. (This obviously ill man remains in charge of nukes, after all.)
GR (New York)
I think that Trudeau and Macron should issue a joint statement denying that they were talking about trump. That's what trump would do.
df (nj)
Trudeau and others in that video, honestly seemed childish. Not saying they're wrong to do that but at my workplace, I do not gossip about coworkers or people I have to work with like that. Amazing how "leaders" become leaders.
Amresh Sinha (Brooklyn)
Did you like when Trump shoved the Prime Minister Montenegro aside to get ahead in a photo-op at last NATO meeting? Just wondering.
Lilou (Paris)
The world is laughing at the U.S. Americans let Trump win in 2016. As easy as it is to say the world is laughing at Trump -- who provides plenty of deplorable behaviors and policies that invite disapproval and disdain, the fact is that, despite losing the popular vote, even with Russian "help", Trump won thanks to an Electoral College full of political appointees who voted along party lines, and an un-involved electorate. That, and the 50% of the electorate who didn't bother to, or couldn't, vote. Will Trump zealots, Russia and couch potatoes help him win in 2020? Or, will voters think of the future, participate and flip the White House and Senate? Let's hope it will be the latter.
Floyd (New Mexico)
@Lilou - the Electoral College votes are essentially cast when the candidate wins them from their respective states. Political appointees they are. But Trump did not win any additional electoral votes that he did not pick up in the states he won. You are correct on an uninvolved electorate. That is what essentially tipped the scales for Trump. If there is a high turnout in 2020, then I honestly can’t see how he wins.
Bill White (Ithaca)
"Mr. Trump failed to produce the statesmanlike narrative his campaign had hoped for." Oh course not. The last thing Trump is is a statesman.
Bassman (U.S.A.)
Not fair! Those mean people hurt my feelings! I'm going home. Such leadership. Such winning.
Jktoronto (Toronto)
Well, once again Trudeau could have been more careful, and I hope it doesn't come back to bite Canada in trade policies. He should be mindful of what his father once said about sleeping next to an elephant. However, to see Trump chastened might almost be worth the cost.
B. (USA)
Obedience and deference can be bought, but respect has to be earned. Someone should tell the President.
Frankie M (Seattle, WA)
Once again, Trump shows he stuck on a few issues that he came up with 2+ years ago with his criticism over how much $$ other countries pay into NATO. If trump stopped leveraging us with so much debt, this might not be such an issue. But since we are no longer even in the top 10 for richest countries in the world is this a desperation move on his part? Also, Trump continues, in my opinion, to come across as having no class or credentials and I wish he would stop making comments like a 5 year old. Demeaning to our country and the office he holds. Disappointing too as I thought he might grow up in the office but not to be.
Washwalker (Needles, CA)
Trudeau's words drove Trump to leave early. Pretty worthy accomplishment whether it be intentional or unintentional.
novoad (USA)
NYT, right now: "General Strike in France Is Fresh Test for Emmanuel Macron as Paris Starts to Shut Down The walkout by a broad range of workers threatens to paralyze the country for several days" That is what was on the mind of Macron... THAT is the reality in the European countries now. As opposed to the economy of the US. The NYT is a gathering place for those who hate Trump, but the reality is that the US, and the position and influence of the US in NATO, are in great shape now. Envied by the Europeans.
Christopher (San Francisco)
@novoad Envied by the Europeans. Best healthcare ever. Mexico paid for the wall. Everything’s great in make-believe MAGATland.
dutchiris (Berkeley, CA)
An unmoored Trump is scary. If he thinks he has to prove his power to the world at large, who knows what he is likely to do. If his retaliation is too extreme, I hope there are those who are prepared to stop him.
Suzanne Wilson (UK)
You state that in the video that offended Trump, ‘Princess Anne looked on’. Actually just before it ends, she leans into the group and says something so she was definitely taking part in the conversation.
H.A. (FL,NH,CA,WA)
"Part of his 2016 presidential campaign pitch to voters was that his election would change how America was viewed abroad. " Yup. Laughing at us, crying for some of us, and wondering if we'll ever be back to lend a hand.
EM (Tempe,AZ)
European leaders are trying to grapple with the baffling and bizarre behavior DT exhibits. It's understandable. He is a strange, self-centered person without a sense of others. His manners alone are shocking...
Look Ahead (WA)
Trump leaves NATO Summit without a press conference touting his "achievements", while other world leaders laugh at him behind his back. Trump may have successfully sunk the traditional mantle of "Leader Of The Free World" in the Atlantic. The inept handling of North Korea, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and any other foreign policy issue facing his Administration says alot to our allies about Trump, Pompeo, Bolton and other bumblers, as well as the obsequious Senate, led by a Marority Leader also compromised by Russia.
Memi von Gaza (Canada)
I mourn for the days when the news covered news, not some vapid conversation between hoi polloi with drinks in hand. But I fear this is the future of the newscast until such time as the reality of what we are ignoring in favor of this tabloid tittle tattle, is so gawd awful, we have no other choice BUT to pay attention. Truth is, reality already is that gawd awful, and the vast majority are having none of it. Much better to pretend that tittle tattle is where it's at - that tut tutting has some kind of agency. That a thousand and some comments on this non story does something to better our condition. I understand that people don't want to face what was supposed to happen to our grandchildren. But that willful ignorance is leading us to tear each other to bits when we could be facing our fate with the dignity and resolve that just might make it possible for those grandchildren to survive after all. The other truth is, most of us don't want to change the ways that have brought us to this pass. We want other people to do it, so we don't have to. Now it's too late. So we find ways to distract ourselves. Find people to hate. Find people to blame. Find people to mock. It feels good, but does nothing!
Very Confused (Queens NY)
Within the article is a photo of Trump and Boris Johnson shaking hands. Directly underneath, the story continues: ‘In the past, Mr Trump has been loath to give up the spotlight...’ Trump has been loath? He’s not even half a loath! If he was, he’d be better than none. Is he really better than none? Wait a second Maybe he is half a loath. Never mind.
Ian Porter (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Two-faced? This from a guy who declared Canada a security threat in order to get an edge in trade? That would be a "security threat" that lost more than 150 lives fighting in support of the USA in Afghanistan. We're past laughing behind Trump's back.
simon simon (los angeles)
As a lifelong Republican, it saddens me to say- It’s official- Trump & GOP have indisputably turned America from world leader to world laughingstock. Even worse, it’s our historically friendly & forgiving allies who are laughing at us. That’s how low America has sunken in the 3 years under totally corrupted & incompetent Trump/GOP with its extremist base. As a lifelong Republican, I declare that we need a new alternative to the GOP- a Neo-Republic party that is not extremists based.
Very Confused (Queens NY)
It looks like everybody is talking about Trump these days... Even inanimate objects! I mean, Talk about embarrassing! When even counterparts are discussing you You know things are bad. Which counter parts specifically? I always was suspicious about the ones in the kitchen...
Frank (Columbia, MO)
Trump's every criticism of others is a projection of himself -- a thing he knows is true of himself. Thus "two-faced" can be added to his list of revealing comments. It has nothing to do with anyone else. Would that he be caught off-mike talking about his supporters.
Ludwig (New York)
There are many things wrong with Trump. Why are the Democrats and the New York Times focusing on that phone call to Zelensky? His indifference to global warming is surely the worst aspect of his character. By contrast, Biden is, at the moment, NOT the political opponent of Trump's. And Ukraine is not crucial to our national safety. So why are the Democrats focusing on things which are of far less importance?
athena (arizona)
First thought, I don't think they were mocking him. Second thought, if we had a different President this would not have happened. I think our current President is behaving childishly. If Biden, Sanders, Clinton or Romney were our President, I doubt they would be offended, if they had given a forty minute press conference not scheduled. They would just own it.
ellen luborsky (NY, NY)
The Europeans know something that the Americans do not. Mr Trump cares much more about whether is is laughed at than whether he is honest. We need to laugh at his delusions too.
MJ (NJ)
That this happened actually terrifies me. I hope they change the codes so the "counter puncher" doesn't nuke France or Canada. Not joking. At all. Actually scared.
Mark (Southern California)
It's the money that counts. How many Billions of dollars did our President secure at these meetings to fund NATO when these countries were taking advantage of the U.S. and our "generosity" of prior administrations? Guess you forget about that when you wrote the article. Kudos to our President for cleaning the pockets out of these foreign leaders and doing exactly what he said he was going to do...again. How refreshing! MAGA!
steffie (Princeton)
@Mark Here's the question you should be asking, Mar: "Why is the US paying more than the other nations?" If the other nations are paying less, why is POTUS insisting on the other nations paying more? Instead, he could have said, "Since you guys are paying less, we will reduce our portion as well." Those funds that the US would withhold could then be spent here at home. Wouldn't that make more sense?
Kay Cee (20011)
This is awesome! Now we know exactly how to get rid of Trump at an event.
kate (new york)
I have never reminded someone that they owe me money and then have them say nice things about me. Same here..
joyce (santa fe)
They are sending a message to Trump that he should heed, but will not. During the impeachment Giuliani is in Ukraine, still looking for the same information to help Trump. Trumps reaction to the impeachment will be to double down on what he always does, obstruct, deny, impede. This president is not a leader in any way, he is a destroyer and an obstructor. Chaos follows him wherever he goes, chaos he deliberately creates,or blindly creates. This world has enough problems on its own, it does not need more manufactured chaos to process. It is like a war on any positive attribute. It is like war in that atrocies seem to be accepted in war, but Trump expects atrocities and tacitly turns his head away. Are those children still in cages? If we become a monarchy under Trump, the permanent monarch, expecting mercy at any time,(unless you are a convicted criminal, which Trump has sympathy with), will be a waste of time. How far he will take that is yet to be seen. We are entering a grim phase where populations are expendable.,Is this our way of controlling population? Yes,it is. But you may be next.

The "extremely stable genius" continues to act as the school yard bully..." I don't like the game anymore, I'm taking the ball and going home".
Astrid (Canada)
I think Justin and Bernie would get along swimmingly.
Dye Hard (New York, NY)
They ARE laughing at Mr. Trump and also at the American people. Who could imagine a more incompetent and clueless non-politician elected to lead the free world. But lead he does not. Perhaps the solution is to just stop inviting the U.S. to the NATO and G-X meetings until a more qualified U.S. leader takes the U.S. helm. However, there is no guarantee this will happen soon, since the GOP seems dedicated to supporting this risible caricature of American leadership.
KJ (Tennessee)
“He’s two-faced,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Trudeau ….. Wait until Trump is back in the safety of his bedroom and we'll see a barrage of furious, childish tweets. “He’s two-faced." But I don't know either one of his faces!
Larry Leker (Los Angeles)
Playground insults and tantrums rarely yield flattering results.
David Baldwin (Petaluma CA)
He can dish it out, but he sure can't take it.
Svirchev (Route 66)
I met a guy at an international conference, he was from South Africa. We had lot's of fun talking about the wonky politics in our respective countries. Then he said, "When I fell down and need a laugh, I read about the American president. He's a real clown, better than the funny papers. Too bad such a great country is becoming the laughingstock of the world."
EveBreeze (Bay Area)
If these subtle digs against Trump caused him to flee the summit in moral outrage, he’d better not come anywhere near my house, and listen to how we talk about him here. He would need smelling salts. Two doses at that.
Rachel Quesnel (ontario,canada)
As a Canadian I say good, it's about time your President who has no moral compass, nor many social skills who enjoys degrading and denigrating people finally get a taste of what he does to others, what Trudeau and by the way Macron, Johnson, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Princess Anne were also amongst those enjoying what really was not that great a deal, I guess you take issue with this but no one has discussed how prior to this soiree, Trump had no problem going after Adam Schiff in a way that no decent person discusses during a foreign visit, I understand the anger, putting it mildly, that Trump has towards Mr. Schiff, but really it is of his own doing, there is a way to dress down Mr. Schiff on camera and get your point accross and not have to be as brass and crass as Trump was, so many people around the world have looked at the issue of the Trudeau-Trump disagreement and find it childish, Trump gives but boy he can't take so he doesn't deserve to be at the big boys table I am old enough to remember Pierre Elliot Trudeau and a saying he had "fuddle duddle you" this was to appease the press who found his real saying too drastic but you get my point.FYI, Pierre Trudeau escorted one of your favorites for many years, your own Barbara Streisand.
angel98 (nyc)
What a huge, hot and bothered mountain to make out of a microscopically minuscule molehill. Well, in the adult world anyway. Of course leaders talk to each other. Where was Trump - late again. Why the drama? Nothing else going on in the world today!
Thomas (Chicago)
That Trump is a real tough guy... If Trudeau has two faces, how many does Trump have?
FreedomRocks76 (Washington)
I'm still waiting to hear/read about Putin and Trump discussions. Whoever recorded those, please don't keep the world waiting any longer.
Kathy (Boston)
My first thought was "who was the eavesdropping loser"... This is all we need. Trump wasn't having it his way at the meeting and this just agitated him even more. He is a vengeful person and will retaliate. who knows what he will do.
Bill (AZ)
trump needs to find out more often that a whole lot of people are laughing at him. There are NO leaders on the world stage who respect him, Putin included. He's a joke and they all know it. Sadly, 40+% of Americans don't understand that. They seem to buy the idea that he's playing 3D chess when everyone else is playing checkers. It's pathetic--beyond words, beyond comprehension. The country has elected its first Kardashian president.
thostageo (boston)
@Bill Kazakhstan prez is more like it
R Fishell (Toronto)
I can't for the life of me understand that there is a story here. A few foreign leaders stated a fact and Mr Trump feels insulted and packs up his toys and goes home. This is the same "leader" publicly berates friend and foe alike, alike more friends. That behaviour is not news worthy and is now ignored. The only reason that this is a story is because Mr Trump is a bully and wants everyone else to walk on egg shells while he trashes every rule of diplomacy and courtesy. - That is the story - nothing more.
Charles E Owens Jr (arkansas)
Good, Glad Trump got a taste of his own medicine. He sits in his Ivory Tweet Chair and dishes out insults left and right and then gets mad when someone else insults him. Such a baby kinda personality Low class world leader kinda guy. If you want to play the game of insulting, you got to know how to take the lines that will be pushed back at you with a smile and not flinch. So sorry you aren't that kinda guy. If you really were a Man, You'd be better than you are. Not playing in the gutter.
AmateurHistorian (NYC)
The left in the US love Canada but have you actually been to Canada? Do you know their money for residency immigration policy? The rising hate crimes against Asian? The weapon sale to Saudi Arabia for use in Yemen? Canada is an green, environmentally conscious country right? Do you know what's Canada's main exports? Here is top ten by value: 1. Oil, gas, coal: US$99.3 billion (22% of total exports) 2. Gasoline vehicles: $60.5 billion (13.4%) 3. Machinery including computers: $34.5 billion (7.7%) 4. Gems, precious metals: $18.3 billion (4.1%) 5. Wood: $14.3 billion (3.2%) 6. Plastics, plastic articles: $13.6 billion (3%) 7. Electrical machinery, equipment: $13.4 billion (3%) 8. Aircraft, spacecraft: $10.6 billion (2.4%) 9. Aluminum: $10 billion (2.2%) 10. Paper, paper items: $8 billion (1.8%) Are 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10 something a country that wants to reduce carbon footprint, plastic pollution, fossil fuel use would push to the rest of the world? Trudeau is a two face. He talked all the good talks but still approves mining on First Nations' land, Pipeline to Pacific Northwest, and armoured assult vehicles export to Saudi
Rachel Quesnel (ontario,canada)
@AmateurHistorian my answer to you, at least Justin won his election even though by a minority, I don't see Justin being impeached, poor judgment at times yes, a good leader, sometimes, but to trade him for Trump, not a chance, and by the way, I am proud to be Canadian you do mention if you are proud to be sold by Trump
Fred (Harbor Springs MI)
Trudeau nails it!!!
morGan (NYC)
I hope I am not the only one who noticed how he literally shrunk in London to an irrelevant persona non grata. I mean the way Macron dressed him down just enforced what 75% of us know for years: he is a coward bully from a safe distance behind an army of lawyers and secret service officers.
RT (Seattle)
Boy, did our tough-guy president get back at Trudeau -- he called the Canadian prime minister "two-faced." That stings so bad! (Trump IS laughable and, deep down, he probably knows it himself, which is why he rushed back to America in a huff.)
cd (nyc)
I would suggest to fellow NYT readers to read 'Babbitt' by Sinclair Lewis ...It's a quick, fun read with great narrative ... The truth of that character remains today ...Trump is not Babbitt, but his die hards are ... enjoy !
Climate Change (CA)
Trump, when he was a carnival barker during President Obama's time was constantly yapping that the world was laughing at us. Now, we know that was a projection too. Soon, I think we will find out that trump was born in Kenya.

MAGA in the eyes of the world is a joke. And many unpatriotic democrats think it is a joke too. What we need is a real president, not this narcissistic self serving one that is destroying our two party system by bullying the GOP into submission. Not Trump in 2020.
RMM (VA)
Macron should do better than gossip about Trump. His country is in shambles.

I wish our allies had been more "American" is calling out this bully---that is all he is, a big mouth, no go show boat...who, the American people allowed to be a big mouth, no go show boat. Finally, the Europeans called him out--and like the bully he is, get got on his plane and left....

More videos like this please, world leaders in their human skin talking just like normal folks.
Margo Channing (Los Angeles)
It is so very funny to read an article in the NY Times wherein two writers so clearly indulge in schadenfreude. The article itself is the thing that comes off as infantile here. The press still doesn't get it. Therefore, they miss the point entirely that Trump did the right thing, exiting as he did. Just because the press has abandoned all sense of self-respect doesn't mean Trump is without it when the circumstances call for it. Who in their right mind would hold up Trudeau as any pillar of behavioral integrity? Silly, tiresome garbage.
Watchfulbaker (Tokyo)
Trump is a laughingstock of the world. Trump Supporters mystify the world. Every single person I meet while traveling abroad is dumbfounded that anyone could fall for the obvious con that Trump is playing on his supporters.

Trump is the laughingstock of the world. Everybody except The Deplorables is laughing at him and his buffoonery. Unfortunately, Dangerous Donald is, well, infinitely dangerous to world order and peace. Of course, Trump’s Republican allies are all too willing to risk everything we have for the sake of the greatest con man in human history.

Trump is a think skinned half wit who has no stamina for politics at home or abroad. He simply can't keep up with European leaders who he has mercilessly berated publicly. He picked up his toys and went home whining like a little boy who never grew into manhood.
Allison (Texas)
They're all just saying what most of us in the U.S. say about Trump every time he does or says something rude or stupid (which is nearly every day). The Current Occupant is just lucky he doesn't hear my partner asking me every morning after I've read the headlines if Trump's had a heart attack yet.

He can dish it out but he can't take it. Can't wait to vote this corrupt loser out in November...

Actually the world should be laughing at the American people for electing this clod in the first place. And God forbid giving him the possibility of a second term. That's who should be laughed at. Us. The people who support Donald J. Trump, a man so unfit for the presidency and elected by well, I cannot say, because the monitor won't allow it to be printed.

"Ignorant as a baby," and as fussy as one, too. Someone please change him. Trump proves every day that he is unfit for the job. Seriously, what could anyone expect from a man who never spent a day in public service and never proved he could work with others to prioritize, because it is all about him. Trump is an embarrassment. He got off on the wrong foot and followed up by falling on his face. It isn't going to get better, either. He should have stuck with Reality TV, because reality is too much for him.

How can you blame anybody, world leader or not, for sizing up Trump for the fool that he truly is? Anybody who pretends otherwise (like the shameful core of the Republican leadership) has condemned them-self to the sad status of the prancing poodle's lap dog. No one with an ounce of honor and self-respect would engage in that type of despicable foolishness. Civility and polite behavior should never be equated with self-abasement, sycophancy and stupidity. These people are humans (not automatons) and have a right to express their heartfelt opinions. If Trump can't stand the heat he should get out of the kitchen.
Terry (St. Louis)
President Trump should pay his 2 cents!!
Next Conservatism (United States)
Our diplomatic outreach to the world is a childish boor.

So there is nothing that tRump has planned that has actually worked for him. His commentary on Macrons statement was as two faced as can be. His belief in NATO is about as sincere as his belief in Christ. So good to watch the proceedings in Congress today. Of the 4 academics , the one who testified for tRump , actually was not good news for him. He said that the testimonies of subpoenaed would be enough. So the Supreme Court needs to weigh in to release the testimonies. From now until Election Day ,Donald will be doing anything for money ,in order to buy the election. I wonder when tRump lands in Moscow after he abdicates, if Putin will return Air Force One?
KJ (Tennessee)
@H E Pettit Putin will keep AF1. And will return his broken puppet.
tim k (nj)
It's silly to say the video of Trudeau, Macron, Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands, Mr. Johnson and Princess Anne was embarrassing to president Trump. Each of the participants came off as gossipy little schools girls auditioning for a sequel to "Mean Girls". What is embarrassing is that each member of the clique are for the most part wards of the US and the benevolence that we have bestowed upon their countries since WWII. President Trump has called them out on their sense of entitlement and demands that we continue to indulge them with our largesse. The video only confirms president Trumps assertions to everyone in this country.
Baxter (NYC)
@tim k the biggest “mean girls” girl, as you put it, is trump. He’s so weak he can’t take a joke. And as a certified fan of his, neither can you.
scottso (Belford NJ)
Funny how easily our strong & benevolent, fearless leader is manipulated by a bunch of feckless schoolgirls...should be ashamed of himself for being so thin-skinned among his supposed allies. Truth be told, he's constantly out of his depth unless he's rallying his deplorables in friendly territory; not what we look for in a leader of ALL American citizens, just his narrow base (and scared Republicans).
Scott Franklin (Arizona State University)
@tim k not everyone. Could you please stop calling him president? Thanks. Before I leave...could you explain his mocking of a special needs person? Can you elaborate on the money he makes from having government business at his resorts? Finally, please enlighten us on the wall he promised Mexico would build. Bottom line? He's thin-skinned and had his wittle feewings hurt. He had a tantrum.
fast/furious (Washington, DC)
I'd like to give Trudeau and Macron a medal. Trump seems impervious to shame. If Trudeau and Macron were mocking him, maybe Trump will back off a bit and think about his behavior. Trump simultaneously has to be the bride at every wedding and also the bully who shoves and threatens other people so they do what he wants. Didn't work this time. It's exhausting and Trump's been an international embarrassment since taking office. It's always just about him. He never thinks about how poorly he's representing the United States with his insults, threats, bullying & self-absorption. I can't see how anyone still supports this person. He's humiliating us. It's his nature to be ugly and rude to people and hog attention. But additionally, Trump doesn't behave because he doesn't know how to. He's lived in a rich celebrity bubble his whole life, ordering people around and preening for the camera. Before becoming president, Trump had never had a real job where he had any responsibility or where being polite, thoughtful and getting along with other people ever played any part. Trump was the absolute worst person to become leader of any country, much less the world's most important democracy. This presidency has been horrible on many levels - Trump's odious behavior at public events is a large part of it. "Want some nice Isis fighters?" What does that even mean?
Travel Cat (Niagara-on-the-Lake)
Excellent comment and observations
boroka (Beloit WI)
Canada's present PM is a moral disaster, but since his people like him to be just that, more power to him. Gossiping among "leaders" at a gala-conference is just entertainment, nothing more.
Ron B (Vancouver Canada)
@boroka sorry but only SOME of the voters like him trudeau garnered a mere 33.1% of the popular vote and a minority of seats in Parliament, 157 out of 338
Occams razor (Vancouver BC)
@boroka Moral disaster? What does that make Trump, then? A moral apocalypse?
Palmer (Va)
@boroka Trudeau is somehow a "Moral Disaster" for noting trump is boorish? Only in the eyes if a trump supporter.
Herry (NY)
Its pretty rich to see Trudeau, who just survived a black face scandal, talk about anyone. What he says is true, but its really hard for me to assign him the moral high ground after videos and pictures of him repeatedly dressing in black face surfaced.
Susan in NH (NH)
@Herry And in your youth you never behaved in any questionable way? You would be perfectly comfortable with having all of your past revealed? Candidate for sainthood?
Cameron Skene (Montreal CA)
@Herry Have you noticed that the pictures in this 'black face' scandal have him posing with his arms around Sikhs, because he's actually throwing a party and working with them back in the 90's? Did you notice his cabinet appointments? Just Wikipedia that one. Our defense minister is Sikh. A significant majority of his riding is South Asian and Haitian, who didn't seem bothered by this nothing sandwich. They're too smart. Nice to talk about 'black face' and all that, but it's a bit opportunistic in light of his actual accomplishments in office.
mitchell (british columbia)
@Herry a miscalculation by an immature drama teacher years ago hardly holds up against Trump's present behaviour.
Thunder Road (New York)
Pass the popcorn! I’ve got this video on loop.
joyce (santa fe)
I' ll toast Trudeau, Trumps opposite pole.
ellienyc (new york)
Something I found interesting about this was the men all seemed to be talking among themselves; I may have missed something, but I don't believe I saw one of them even look in Princess Anne's direction. Also, in profile Johnson looks like he's put on a huge amount of weight, getting up into Trump territory.
David Cary Hart (South Beach, FL)
I can recall all of the times that President Obama was this undignified.
Chac (Grand Junction, CO)
@David Cary Hart Huh?
Seattle (Seattle)
@David Cary Hart So can I. Zero times.
Mwekaman (Carlisle, MA b)
@David Cary Hart- I assume you mean zero. I agree!
AmateurHistorian (NYC)
Hardly a surprise those small time politicians would talk behind the president’s back after being called out for their failure to abide by the alliance’s funding requirement. When is the last time you find a respectful leader in Europe? Merkel that almost single handily destroyed the Union? Macron that cannot stop Paris from shutting down by protest? Johnson? When was the last time Europe even mattered on the world stage? When was the last time Europe wowed you with invitation, tech breakthrough, food, culture? Even the smallest of the East Asian three, Korea, have more cultural than Germany or UK. Europe is riding on America’s coattail and freeloading from the US’s bloated defense budget. The US cannot continue to play Ned Flanders while our own country is languishing and China is taking leadership role in the world.
Yeah (Chicago)
When was the last time I found a respectful leader in Europe? When Obama was president. Before that, when anyone was president.
Martin (CA)
@amateurHistorian. No one asked America to spend as much on defense as we do. We did that on our own accord. Don’t blame other countries for that.
Bill (BC)
Huh? Wowed you with invitation? What is that? Culture, food? Europe is light years ahead in culture and food. America has neither unless deep fried is a food and guns are culture. As for technology how about green tech? Again, way ahead. Germany is technologically bleeding edge in many areas. France as well is very advanced in technology. Other countries have contributed equally. In medicine Europe tends to be far better positioned in research and development. Also transport. As for protests in Paris, the French have a long history of taking to the streets whereas Americans as we have seen lately can’t handle their differences. Europe has knit together historically fractious peoples and their respective economies. America is quite nicely dismantling theirs.
Wow (Pittsburgh)
Might he leave our presence, too, if we all start whispering about him in public? If only it were so simple...
Travel Cat (Niagara-on-the-Lake)
This reminds me of holiday gatherings with the inlaws. But in my case the lovely wife reminds me to “think, the speak”.
Jennene (Denver, CO)
"Two-faced" implies that someone says one thing to your face and the opposite behind your back. That's not what happened here, as I understand it. Trudeau said something that was 100% true and, I am guessing, would also say it in Trump's presence. Trump talks too much, and at inappropriate times. His staff was (again) caught off-guard at his remarks. As for leaving the event, if Trump ever communicated with people outside his sphere of sycophants -- in the Senate, the WH, and his rallies of the faithful -- he'd find out just how deeply and widely he is disliked (to put it mildly).
Falconpunch (In Utan)
it's rather telling that Trump clone Boris Johnson sought to distance himself from Trump and gave DJT forewarning - he doesn't want Trump involved in his December 12th election - he's doing his very best to keep the Trump stain off of himself and Great Britain.
Stan Carlisle (Nightmare Alley)
The adults of the world are having a meeting and in walks Trump. Unlike the previous meetings of adults, he doesn't get to disrupt everything and everyone and make the meeting all about himself this time. On top of everything, they actually speak about him in a less-than-flattering way. What does Trump do? He acts naturally and storms out like a naughty child having a tantrum. A Trump tantrum. This happens a lot.
kim (nyc)
I'm stunned, yes stunned--I have so far resisted going numb--that someone who leads an administration that cages children, dismisses war crimes, punishes the poor can be so incredibly sensitive to his own pain. Nothing for anyone else!
joyce (santa fe)
To trump, his ability to control the message is all, everything, the holy grail. Nothing else ever enters his mind. If he cant control the message, he exits the stage. Laughing at himself is something way beyond his capacity, way,way beyond.
ellieny (New York)
Would love to know if there has ever been any kind of insight into what happened to Trump as a child that made him this way. Was it in the family, in school, what? I would have thought that by now someone who knew would have talked. I know his older brother, Fred Trump, Jr., killed himself and that there is apparently some sort of bad blood between the children of Fred Trump, Jr. and the Donald, if not the whole family. Sort of expected maybe Fred, Jr.'s kids would talk, but apparently not.
Aunt Amy (Sacramento)
I recommend the book "Trump on the Couch" by Justine A. Frank. It is a close look at his family and all of their foibles.
Steven Poulin (Kingston, ON)
These leaders are technically not laughing at Trump but are rather making light of Trump out of disbelief (once again). We can be assured though of one leader in the world that is most definitely laughing AT Trump. That would be Putin.
Tom (Bluffton SC)
After his UN speech where the delegates laughed at him, he said they were laughing WITH him. Now it's proved, at NATO people really laugh AT him.
Wasatch reader (salt lake city)
Proof, once again, that all politics is high school politics.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
@Wasatch reader I offer that some high school students are more mature than many of our politicians, and Trump is at the top of the immature list.
MaccaUS (Albany)
The point is that the people of the world laugh at Trump’s self-obsession, thoughtless decision making, childish rants, etc., but particularly his policy flip flops. It’s bad for the US and it’s very destabilising at home and abroad. Let us hope his maniacal stewardship is not renewed.
GR (New York)
Beware, Europe. trump has been ridiculed by European leaders. He won't take that lightly. We all know that trump's response to opposition is to double-down and attack. I think we can expect trump to do something like withhold funds from NATO, or perhaps withdraw from NATO altogether. If trump can't be the subject of awe and adoration, he'll pick up his ball and go home. We should expect nothing less than the worst possible scenario. trump won't take this snub quietly. That much we can be sure of.
Teo (São Paulo, Brazil)
If Trump were to do that, maybe, just maybe, the Republicans would grow a spine and actually participate in the impeachment proceedings and remove him from office.
nolongeradoc (London, UK)
@GR The US doesn't fund NATO. Nobody does. Countries comtribute military resources to the alliance. Nobody pays into it. Countries are supposed to spend 2% of GDP on their armed forces. Ten of the 28 meet that target. The US does. The UK does. France (1.98%) effectively does too. Canada doesn't. Neither does Germany. Mr Trump can't withhold funds. What he could do is save the American taxpayer trillions by cutting America's military and stopping independent American military adventuring which is nothing to do with NATO. The US spends nearly DOUBLE the NATO target committment. Why the profligacy? Why the waste? Why the blame of Europe?
Lindsey E. Reese (Taylorville IL.)
I'm disappointed he didn't agree with Macron that NATO is "brain dead". That's the story here. If we're lucky, France will assume the role of protecting Europe from the Russian hordes!..Macron is no fool. As he said, Russian invasion is not a true threat... We should agree, and stop wasting billions of dollars every year for European defense and bring our 320,000 troops back home....I think they can afford to pay for their own army...
JSBNoWI (Up The North)
If we bring those troops home, we give up our ability to bully and threaten. We don’t really have any other military policy
Didier (Charleston. WV)
If there was a Nobel Prize for inspiring derision, ridicule, and revulsion, President Trump should win it. His buffoonery has united the world in sharing a good laugh at his expense. How many of our Presidents could have said that?
IJJ (Hong Kong)
We were always heading towards this sort of event. Taking his ball and going home is all Trump has left at this point. Unfortunately, expect to see more costing up to Erdogan, Xi, Putin eat al as he scrambles for a “statesman” like backdrop.
carlo1 (Wichita, KS)
trump flies home early because his feelings are hurt. Be ready for the rain of US sanctions against global economies because "they" made fun of him.
Arne Huse (Canada)
You just watch - tomorrow Trump will announce new tariffs on Canada for "national security reasons"!
Bring Back Barry (Philadlephia)
I think this proves that Trump is delusional. Up to now it seems he really had no idea that he is being laughed at by foreign leaders. If only the Republicans would come out of their closets.
sanderling1 (Maryland)
@Bring Back Barry , unfortunately the corporate donors have paid for very, very comfortable closets for McConnell &Co.
Chris (Indianapolis)
Once again, Trump shows he can dish it out, but he can’t take it.
TheOutsider (New York)
what do you expect? Behaving like a spoiled disgruntled kindergartener and then expecting to be taken serious by real world leaders? This is not Wyoming, Sir.
fbn (Hysterical Olde Philadelphia)
Remember all the foreign leaders who came here and called their political opponents names? Yea, me neither.
GA (Woodstock, IL)
Trump will no doubt come up with something grandiose to counter the negative publicity and soothe his hurt feelings. I might even feel sorry for him were he not so despicable.
Uncle Fester (Oztralia)
@GA "It was a perfect meeting, and I negotiated many very good things"
G Rayns (London)
"The world is laughing at us." For once in his life Trump is on the button. Providing, of course, that 'us' means himself.
GR (New York)
@G Rayns 'us' in trump language means the United States. trump, like Nixon, equates the president with the Presidency. It's all the same in his mind. Therefore, and affront to the president is tantamount to an affront to the entire country. Sadly, his base and Congressional Republicans agree.
....a reader..... (Los Angeles)
“Mr. Trump had hoped the 70th anniversary celebration of NATO might provide a flattering stage and a triumphant narrative”? What, is he on heavy drugs? He’s reaping the just desserts of his three years of abuse of our allies.
JSBNoWI (Up The North)
I suspect the ravages of venereal disease, probably syphilis
Eastbackbay (Bay Area)
Well atleast someone is having a good laugh while we in this country can only cry.
Concerned (So Cal)
Trump’s entire life is an overcompensation for a deep (and completely justified) sense of inadequacy. Yet they mock and laugh at him.
BB (Chicago)
It's hard to add much to the tidal wave of most of these comments, acknowledging the boorishness, childishness and ridiculousness of our imposter president. That he is also dangerously incompetent, dangerously manipulative and dangerously immoral is also pretty darn clear. As I recall (and I live now in Chicago), the vast majority of New Yorkers told us all of this, and more, just four years ago. Why didn't we listen to you?
Leslie (Amherst)
Oh, poor, poor little Trump. Did he take all his toys home, too? Trump is an active, clear and present danger to the security of every single person living in the United States of America. He cannot even manage to stay in the same room with our long-time, immensely important allies--allies that help protect us from the world's most heinous regimes. What bothers me most is that, under Trump and his Republican sheeple, we seem to be on the verge of becoming one of those despotic regimes.
Jules (Livermore)
I guess most of us are too stunned and baffled to do anything about it.
Perry Share (Ireland)
unfortunately there is nothing funny about the President of the US and the threat he poses to the world
Former Republican (West of the Rockies)
Trump is taking his ball and going home. He doesn’t have to play with those mean nasty NATO partners. Except that he does.
José (Chicago)
Trump doesn’t need to worry. Nobody is laughing at the US. They are laughing at him because he is, well, laughable. He truly is a tragic figure. A bloated ego and a paper thin skin that are witness to his enormous insecurities.
sdt (st. johns,mi)
Time to start that wall on our northern border. Yes, the Canadians will pay for it.
Margie Moore (San Francisco)
The president is nothing but a babbler. Presenting an adult, coherent American strategy for the many complex political situations we face today is obviously beyond him. Leave it to the squawking Republicans to attach themselves like leeches to such moral and ethical emptiness.
Pappy Constitution (Hinckley, Ohio)
Thank goodness the world isn’t laughing at us like Fearless Leader said they did when President Obama was in office...oops, never mind.
JD (North Hollywood, CA)
I am waiting for the day when this president's name is not mentioned once in the NY Times. It could be a while. But I'll wait.
The Hawk (Arizona)
It looks like BoJo has secured re-election. These comments are nothing compared to what these world leaders and their citizens are saying in the privacy of their homes, or perhaps after a few pints of good English ale. BoJo knows that it was not going to be enough to just distance himself from Trump. This will do the job. He is quite the tactician after all for such a buffoon.
Lawrence H (Brisbane)
"In the past, Mr. Trump has been loathe to give up the spotlight, especially if he would be ceding it to a televised impeachment hearing unfolding on Capitol Hill." Editor: It's loath, not loathe.
Terence Yhip (Mississiauga Ontario)
Never seen a US presodent held in so low esteem by almost every world leader, even it seems by his own sympathisers. Pity! as Boris would say over tea and crumpets.
Eugene A. Melino (Bronx, NY)
When one acts buffoonishly, engaging in name calling and temper tantrums, one should expect to be laughed at.
Carsafrica (California)
I hope Trump is learning if you live by the sword you will die by it. His hateful comments have become the norm and he knows no boundaries. For example calling Adam Schiff deranged while he is on foreign soil is disgusting . Having watched Trump ranting, raving and lying at Media conferences , his campaign Rally’s if anyone is totally deranged it is he. In contrast Schiff is calm , collected and articulate
CarolinaJoe (NC)
Trump was simply ignored, except by Erdogan, and that got him angry and paranoid. But the fact that everyone has him for a fool is an objective observation, and he better get used to that. For his own sake.
Mr. Mark (California)
Tired of winning yet?
PFJohnson (California)
“The world is laughing at us,” No Mr. President the world is laughing at you.
dani213 (los angeles)
who wouldn't make fun of him? he's an embarrassing disgrace to anyone with 1/2 a brain or intellect. which says a a great deal about his supporters.
Andy (San Francisco)
Daily, Trump embarrasses the US. And when he’s not, he’s giving away power to despots like Kim or Putin or Erdogan with little or nothing in return. He’s a fool and everyone knows it except, apparently, the Republicans backing him. To the point where they have trashed their morals and are on the verge of irreparably harming our democracy for him. No one is worth that. Least of all this human personification of corruption.
Jim (NY)
Trump once again acts as the middle-school boy he is.
ski time (Teaneck NJ)
more like preschool
Prof B (New England)
Why, in bringing up the clearly tangential matter of the testimony today before the House Judiciary Commttee, was there no mention of the fourth member of the panel, Prof Turley, Shapiro Chair and impeachment scholar from the George Washington University Law School? Balance, please, NYT, at all times, in all venues.
Chris Morris (Idaho)
Trump's ego is draining out like a lanced pustule. (Huge laugh emoji here!)
Kennyway (Austin, TX)
We have a childish brat for a president. What in the world are you hiding Mr. Trump? Why are you so fearful? Why are you so thin skinned? Time to grow up. He is going to get caught just you wait and see He says "Why is everybody always picking on me."
Thom (NC)
To use an apt line from The Simpsons: “stupid babies need the most attention.”
Dabney L (Brooklyn)
Trump is desperately insecure and thin-skinned. He sure can dish it out, but like any good bully, as soon as it lands on his plate, he lashes out and flees. This is the behavior of an emotionally immature little man child, not a leader on the world stage.
DaisyMae (New York)
...oh to be a fly on the wall of Air Force One on the flight back to D.C....
Econ John (Edmonton)
Can someone please tell Trump that what Justin meant was that Trump was amazing as he ably fielded so many questions with incisive wit and wisdom, for so long, from such an esteemed group of grateful journalists eager to report on the eloquent and articulate analysis from Trump himself, the gifted orator. Then Trudeau went on to explain how everybody's jaws dropped, even Trump's own team of aides, when confronted with Trump's impressive wisdom and insights. He simply never ceases to amaze. Tell him he's an amazing man. Keep telling him that. Tell him we all believe it. Tell him that we're not being two-faced when we speak of our most sincere admiration. Please tell him anything to assuage his infantile ego, so he can focus on golf and making up more rude names for Adam Schiff, and leave politics and policy to grown ups.
TigerSoul61 (Montclair, New Jersey)
All I'm wondering is what kind of beer was Trudeau enjoying? Looks like a nice hearty English style ale to me.
Econ John (Edmonton)
@TigerSoul61 Notice Trudeau was able to raise the glass to his mouth and drink with one hand. We know Trump can't do that. I think that upset Trump as much as what Trudeau was saying. Trump thought Justin was showing off. I can't wait for the Tweet, "...that one-handed, two-faced show-off..."
Richard Savoie (Japan)
I am an Independent and for the record I would like to say I certainly do not love the country that trump is running.
Bill (New Jersey)
Running? He spends most his time either tweeting, watching Fox News , playing golf , appearing on Fox and friends, the rest of the time...boldface lying. He spends taxpayer money sending his minions around the world, not for the United States, but for him personally. I hate the way trump is destroying our country, not the country that he’s destroying.
Mike (Here)
Trump was completely reasonable there...unbelievable but true. He was accurate and gracious.
roy (sf)
He's never been gracious in his life. I doubt he would know what that was if it feel out of the sky and landed on his head.
kenneth (nyc)
@Mike "Embarrassing video" "Late to arrive" "Abruptly Exits" Oh, yes, ever so "gracious."
Patricia Caiozzo (Port Washington, New York)
@Mike Are you being sarcastic? Accurate? The man has told over 12,000 lies. Gracious? He left early, denigrated Adam Schiff, and called Trudeau two-faced. I would not allow a toddler to behave in that manner.
Dearson (NC)
The world is clearly able to see what most Republican members of Congress and some of the American People chose not to see. They are able to see that POTUS is a disaster on the world stage , while many Republicans in Congress chose not to see that he is a disaster at home.
John (USA)
Couple of observations: (1) Mr. Trudeau was not just stating a fact. He was pointing out the ridiculous behavior of Trump. (2) I am somewhat glad, if not outward happy, that the other world leaders share a similar sentiment about the U.S. President. And one that is shared largely with the rest of the world.
Lana (US)
Trump is being rightfully laughed at by his peers on the world stage. Of course, he’s unaware that he’s not worthy of anybody’s respect. I’m just afraid that as he becomes more aware, he’ll go full Carrie on those who reject him.
Margo Channing (NY)
@Lana You foget how Carrie ended?
Ronald A Sprague (Katy, Tx)
his Mendacity has no peers on the world stage. Those laughing at him, while perhaps not all widely loved in their respective countries, would never rank so highly...in his mind.
Steve (Moraga ca)
If we could hear the interior voices in the heads of Republican members of Congress and probably a good number of Trump's WH aides, we would hear dismayed laughter, groaning and a degree of self-loathing about having to publicly support and praise their president.
Lona (Iowa)
If the State of New York had a functioning criminal justice system, we wouldn't have the problem of President Trump because he would have been convicted of tax evasion and fraud long ago.
David (NYC)
Trumps actions has hurt American influence forever. Even after a Trump is out of office the damage he has done to us nationally and globally will be with us for years to come.
Confused (Atlanta)
@David If you think that your hard-earned tax dollars should be used to fund NATO for other countries you're crazy. Perhaps you should send NATO a check of your own. It might even be tax deductible if you funnel it through the US Treasury.
Kiska (Alaska)
@Confused I didn't see David saying anything about NATO. What's up with this red herring?
Blaise Descartes (Seattle)
NATO has been a bulwark of Europe since 1949 with many American presidents, both Democratic and Republican. In three short years, Trump has undercut this alliance with his constant messages of "America first" and "pay for your own defenses." Moreover, many Europeans are rightly afraid of Putin's Russia which has annexed the Crimea and carries on a war in the east of Ukraine. They look and wonder: What if Russia decided to bully my country? Trump had one or two good campaign ideas. He was presumably going to stop illegal immigration. But he botched that with inflammatory rhetoric. He doesn't seem to understand that governing requires negotiation. It also requires diplomacy and it is easy to make mistakes. That's why it is so disastrous that Trump has fired all of his advisors and cabinet members who tried to help him form an effective foreign policy. The result has been a series of disasters. The photo-ops with Kim Jong-un with no actual agreements following, the failure to call out the murder of Jamal Khashoggi by the Prince of Arabia, the abandonment of the nuclear deal we had with Iran. Trump's foreign policy has been a disaster. That's the real reason he needs to go. Perhaps the impeachment in the House will give him the message that other world leaders are also sending. Trump is incompetent as president.
Practical Thoughts (East Coast)
Republicans and their 60 million supporters have more in common with Putin, Kim, Dueterte and Erdogan than they do with left leaning Americans, Canadians, Western Europeans, Australia/NZ or Japanese. The Republican brand LOVES Trump and his isolationist and theocratic world view. If Trump is not voted out. the US will be joined at the hip with Russia and Russian values.
Lindsey E. Reese (Taylorville IL.)
I suppose Democrats prefer Fidel Castro, Maduro, Pinochet, Mao, Lennin, and many others. And there's always Louis Farrakhan! I suppose it could be claimed that all Marxist dictators are left wing.
John Gilday (Nevada)
The President did exactly what Americans should hope he would do when disrespected by the leaders of countries that our military and tax dollars keep safe. Without America these countries would not exist today and the fact that President Trump calls out a phony like Macron should be applauded.
G Rayns (London)
It seems that you think Trump and America are the same thing. Thankfully they are not. The people assembled were laughing at an uneducated fool, who it just happens, entirely by circumstance, to be the US president
Confused (Atlanta)
@John Gilday I rarely hear any voice of reason in these pages. Bravo for your comment.
Practical Thoughts (East Coast)
@John Why would other freedom loving countries align with an autocrat that’s fully aligned with Putin, Erdogan and MBS. A President who expresses totalitarian and ethno-nationalist views? The very views that tipped Europe and East Asia apart several times.
mr (Newton, ma)
There are many words in the English language that seemed to have been coined just to describe trump's behavior. Crass is the one that popped into my head.
Paul Wortman (Providence)
The bully stomps off after giving a few punches, but unable to take a few back. NATO sadly has been and is weakened by Donald Trump who still refuses to provide wholehearted support for Article 5. After Syria, after Ukraine, and now after NATO, it's mission failed for U.S. security and trust, and "mission accomplished" for Vladimir Putin and Russia. What was all the gossip about? Quel dommage!
Confused (Atlanta)
Trudeau should know better as should the others. Making fun of the President of the United States will get you nowhere. Frankly, they may live to regret their bit of fun at the expense of Trump. He may not be liked by all but he does represent my country, a country that has done more than any other for this world. These people are not diplomats!
E (LI)
@Confused No they are not diplomats. Neither is Trump. They have diplomats but this was not a diplomatic event. This was meeting of NATO leaders who are aware that the US leader had not made it to the event on time. In order to gain respect, you have to give respect.
mr (Newton, ma)
@Confused Trump deserves nothing. He has ridden on the good will that generations of Americans fought and died for. He has trashed alliances that true Americans created. He is an embarrassment in the truest sense. He is not a majority's president here.
David (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
@Confused The U.S. has indeed "done a lot" for the world. Like toppling democratically elected governments in Latin America because they were too left-leaning. Or destabilizing the Middle East over the course of decades contributing to untold bloodshed. Oh, and the U.S. still has the distinction of being the only country in world history to intentionally nuke not one but two cities full of innocent civilians.
Flyover Country (Akron, OH)
Here's the plan...alienate everyone then throw tantrum because alienated and not a part of the club.
SR (Bronx, NY)
"It's Canada, they have money" ...unlike us, thanks to the Job Cuts and Taxes Act that both guts government services and siphons money from the non-rich so the loser can buy votes from farmers. Small wonder he demands other countries pay their own share and our share too.
robert (reston, VA)
"Let's be serious." A day later, a video goes viral. That's too much for a two-year old to handle.
KB (WA)
Actions speak louder than words. On a world stage, he definitively proved we have a 4th grader in charge of our country.
Raye (Seattle)
@KB That's too generous - more like a bratty toddler who grabs other kids' toys and, when he is chastised, cries and stamps his feet and whines, "I'm not playin' with you anymore."
Confused (Atlanta)
@KB I assume you are talking about Trudeau.
Margo Channing (NY)
@Confused LOL.
Slann (CA)
He does NOT represent democracy, as he SHOULD. The "free world" needs actual leadership, not the self-aggrandizing, condescending boasting of this fraud.
Objectivist (Mass.)
Trump does plenty of stuff that richly deserves some sarcasm, and it's not the least bit odd that these fellows would be inclined to get a laugh or two at his expense, despite their own inflated egos and narcissitic tendencies. But. Trump gets to return to the world's strongest economy when it's over, and these guys go home to nations limping along at best. No amount of sarcasm is going to solve that issue. Given the venue, one could be forgiven for believeing that they should have a very long list of more important things to discuss.
wmcmaster (Toronto)
Trump and Trudeau have something in common. Neither ever grew up.
David (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
@wmcmaster It makes you wonder. These are the best leaders the Western world can muster? No wonder China is ascendant.
Christopher (San Francisco)
Gosh, really? Mr. "Successful Businessman" isn't so successful after all. If only we had seen a sign before the election (that the Russians had to help him win). Perhaps a failed business venture, a fraud lawsuit, maybe a bankruptcy, you know, just any sign that he was truly incompetent and this sort of thing could have been predicted.
Leigh (Qc)
“He’s two-faced,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Trudeau, when asked about the viral video. Prime Minister Trudeau honourably owned up to making the critical comment. The two faced one is Trump (hardly news) who, as per usual and purely for convenience sake, tries to make a big deal out of next to nothing, and uses that cynical fabrication as an excuse to turn tail. America never had such cowering representation. No doubt the world's greatest huckster since the dawn of civilization can't wait to rewrite history at his next rally and rake in the big bucks from his deluded flock.
Mheneghan (Come From Away)
At least the huskster’s great at something —oughta make him happy in the moment.
Confused (Atlanta)
@Leigh There is a difference between owning up to something that is inappropriate and apologizing for it. I fear that the Canadians have elected a president based on looks and charm rather than competence.
Kiska (Alaska)
@Confused I'm sure the Canadians are shattered at your opinion.
Kit (US)
To the reporters and editors of the New York Times. Why is it that whenever the discussion comes up about what Canada does and doesn't do regarding the defense of the free world, no one mentions that the security of the United States rides on the actions of Canada, thanks to their joint command of NORAD. As created in the 50s, it was a "bi-national command, centralizing operational control of continental air defenses against the threat of Soviet bombers." The later '96 renewal "redefined NORAD’s missions as aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America." The 2006 renewal "added a maritime warning mission to the command's existing missions." The deputy commander of NORAD is a Canadian general. In simple terms, Trump is attacking and insulting the very nation that is critical to the nation's security from Russian aggression.
Ronald (NYC)
@Kit Trump will put the kibosh on NORAD when he gets back stateside.
Tracy (Canada)
It never ceases to astonish me when those who care the very least about how their behaviour impacts other people, are also the most sensitive, delicate “snowflakes” out there. If the President of the United States doesn’t have the strength of character to shoulder even the *tiniest* fraction of what he’s dishing out regularly, then he is too fragile to be in that role. No one in the world needs to keep coddling that nonsense.
stewart (toronto)
What the US media is not reporting is that the jaw drop was by Trumps' staff when out of the blue he said the next G7 meeting would be at Camp David. His staff knew nothing of it and was caught by surprise during the press conference/meeting that the Trudeau/Trump meeting turned out to be.
CTBlue (USA)
I doubt the world is laughing at America but they are definitely laughing at Trump who keeps making fool of himself. He was sent to the NATO summit to do a job by the American tax payers but he abandon his duties and let all American down.
Andrea R. (USA)
Dear World, Sorry about our president. Most of us can’t stand him, either. Please bear with us. He doesn’t represent most of us. Macron, you went easy on donald. Being late because he was bloviating is the least of his issues. Thank you, An American
Lou S. (Clifton, NJ)
Wow, who would have ever anticipated this? You mean to tell me that when you have the power of the Oval Office in your hands, and you use it to backstab our former Allies with insulting tweets coming completely out of the blue, they can go ahead and talk about you behind your back? Well, it's obviously a very cruel world out there. It's so very reassuring to know that our Fearless Leader has a thick skin, and our Country's interests placed well ahead of his own ego.
Jayson Blair (My Masters House)
Trump often says despicable things and embarrasses the country with his public pronouncements. But at least he does so openly, to one's face. And on that score, at least, he comes out the better man here. To elevate snarky, snotty and sniveling backstabbers into little heroes who are afraid to to speak truth to power is actually derangement.
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
What foreign policy accomplishments? His Middle East pandering to Netanyahu? His abandonment of our Kurdish allies in Syria? His lasting peace in North Korea? His extortion of the Ukrainian government? His sword dance in Saudi Arabia? Trump is an empty vessel, living in a pretend world of his own. He adds nothing of substance. His thoughts, strategies and deeds are ephemeral.
ana (california)
No one likes him abroad or in the United States with the exception of this weird group of people with no sense that he and the reprehensible Republicans fall all over themselves to lie to to keep them voting for them. It is indeed bizarre.
Djt (Norcal)
A big, blubbering man-baby. Does he not see how people react when he insults them? Perhaps people like Trudeau recognize little Donald for what he is and getting insulted by Donald is like getting insulted by a 5 year old. But oh, the reverse! When Donald gets insulted by a leader, he truly understands that he's just a baby.
BWCA (Northern Border)
I honestly don’t believe the world is laughing at the USA. Instead, the world and its leaders are laughing at Trump and the minority basket of deplorable (Hillary was right - look at the spineless Republicans in Congress) that elected him as President.
John L (Portland)
He does what he always does: do some damage, get attention, walk away. Repeat.
Steve (Seattle)
Macron , Trudeau and the Nato leaders made the big bad bully cry. I hope the Londoners float their trump baby balloon, how appropriate.
el (browno)
Lesson- he who plays lives by the sword dies by the sword.
NOTATE REDMOND (TEJAS)
The “emperor” no long has any clothes. The world will no longer suffer the fool that is the president of the United States.
solar farmer (Connecticut)
Trump can dish it out, but he clearly can't take it. What's his 'exit strategy' for the G7 conference America is hosting. Is he going to lock himself in his room and weep when he is snubbed at the buffet line? I am looking forward to his cowardly departure from the White House just like his cowardly departure from London.
Rose (St. Louis)
Imagine President Obama receiving such responses from European leaders! Congressional Republicans would be screaming to high heaven about the embarrassment to our country. With Trump, they have become part of the big, sad joke. I cringe in embarrassment at anyone in 2019 who identifies as Republican.
counsel9 (Island)
@Rose Yeah. Remember that tan suit and the Mustard OMG
Tipinya (South Australia)
“The president insisted at the time that he was not the target, saying, “They weren’t laughing at me, they were laughing with me.” Wrong! People all over the world ARE watching, in absolute horror, at the antics of Trump, who is neither a statesman, nor a diplomat. He continues to project his self-importance, yet his daily tweets and rambling narrative project nothing to inspire any respect. People around the world see an old man, totally out if his depth, ranting and lying about everything and everyone he doesn’t like, and dragging the reputation of the United States of America down with him. The ‘emperor with no clothes’ is creating a toxic relationship with many other countries and their leaders. He’s a buffoon, but while his mealy-mouthed enablers in the Republican Party, at FoxNews and the MAGA cult allow him to lie and insult at will, the rest of the world will continue to laugh at Trump and shake their heads at the dark and dangerous place he’s dragging the USA to. ....and good luck trying to get rid of him. If he goes down, he’s taking the whole country with him!
Sharon Toporowski (Toronto)
It's telling that everyone knows immediately who Trudeau was talking about.
Rick Morris (Montreal)
When Trump says that he doesn't want world leaders to poke fun at the United States, what he really means is that he doesn't want them to poke fun at HIM. He is so pathetically insecure he can't handle anything that is short of idolatry. Putin and Erdogan know this well and mine it to their benefit. "Praise Trump and praise him to death" - that would suffice as the title of the Russian GRU intelligence dossier on our President. With no pun intended, his insecurity has become our country's security risk.
Tyler Arbour (New Orleans, LA)
“We need a President who isn’t a laughing stock to the entire world. We need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy. Respect!” Trump, Twitter, 8/9/14. “Sure, Jan.” Various world leaders, Buckingham Palace, 12/3/2019.
W. Stevens (New England)
"The timing was not perfect." LOLOLOLOLOL
Stop and Think (Buffalo, NY)
Oh, no! The playground bully wasn't invited to the party that the cool guys organized. And he'll be missing out on all of the cool girls attending, too. Looks like the bully decided not to crash the party. Among his bully friends, he'll now be called a chicken. " 'Tis a shame, 'tis a shame. " murmured The Queen, as she gracefully turned to hide her smirk. "The table is already set for two guests. I hate to see them go to waste. Barack and Michelle also happen to be in town. Perhaps they would enjoy coming over again. I'll see."
Stevem (Boston)
Back in 2016, when Trump "campaigned" by insulting everybody, it struck me that this guy didn't particularly mind making enemies. Now, he's incensed that everywhere he goes, he has no friends. Well, you reap what you sow.
Mick hayman (Covington, LA)
Maybe he really feared being arrested by a tribunal for abetting war crimes.
Two Americas (South Salem)
Maybe a nervous breakdown?
shhhhhh (ny)
The bully runs away when confronted.
Mark McIntyre (Los Angeles)
He can dish it out like a schoolyard bully, but thin-skinned Donald certainly can't take it.
Charles Segal (Kingston Jamaica)
Democrats are losing the culture war and will lose the 2020 election. The deplorables and a majority of the country are looking for results and understand narratives. Europe forking over an additional 130 billion is a result Trump has created. A conservative narrative the majority of the country appreciates.
David (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
@Charles Segal What is the actual result, there? This country is far more in debt than it was before Trump started. So he has annoyed our friends around the world in order to extract a bit more money from them, but has still managed to drive us further into debt than ever before. So where are these results you speak of?
p.a. (seattle)
He is the laughing stock of the world.
Jayson Blair (My Masters House)
I remember when Stanley McChrystal talked trash about Obama behind his back. Your reactions were different to that sort of personal gossip in an off-guard moment. A general responsible for thousands of lives was fired, and you all cheered. Hyenas.
ez (usa)
@Jayson Blair It was not General McCrystal who trash talked Obama but his staff. A reporter was at the session, an after work get together, where the staff made the comments and reported their comments in Rolling Stone (I think). An officer is responsible for what those under him do so McCrystal honorably took the fall for it and resigned. The reporter was accompanying the General and his staff on a trip and was trusted by them and he was the dishonorable one. No wonder the military distrusts reporters!
Wally Wolfd (Texas)
Let's get one thing straight, they're laughing at Trump, not America. They are as frustrated with Trump as we are. Putin is going to wind up as his last best friend and then he'll eat him alive.
Maryrose (New York)
An utter and complete embarrassment. Someone please help him. He can't take the heat. PLEASE.
Fred J (New Jersey)
Yes they laughed at him because he is a joke!
Daniel Hoffman (Philadelphia)
"Gossipy" is dishonest amdunfair. Trump was way late for a meeting because he held an unscheduled press conference. His actions were outrageously rude. Talking about what occurred is not "gossip"; it's comparing notes about an extremely irregular event.
Mike (Manhattan)
The right wing media frequently employs the demeaning term "cuckold" to attack Democrats for their lack of virality, manhood, courage, and even more odious characterizations. However, the cowardice of this president in facing criticism and unpleasant situations is beyond compare. I wonder whether that is the reason that he is a habitual liar: he just can't face the truth.
Holly (Canada)
So, this is what it's come to? Now leaders of foreign countries cannot speak a word of Trump unless it's complimentary even in what was a private conversation. Trump trashes and maligns anyone who dare disagrees with him, but the first time he hears he's being talked about he whines like a baby. He is a petulant child and a dangerous man wrapped into one very scary insecure package.
acm (baltimore)
And the bully had to come running home to mama, crying about how mean they were to him.
Freebeau (Minneapolis, MN)
He can be nasty and dish it out, but he is a wimp and cannot take the mild same in return.
Thomas Renner (New York City)
Trump need not worry, the world leaders were not laughing at the US, they were laughing at him. Trump is useless, he is right about them not paying enough however he is such a clown no one pays attention to him
Andromeda5 (Laidley)
I'm guessing these countries will be tariffed into oblivion now. Trump will make it his mission to pay them back for laughing at him. Too bad they used to be allies. It's hard not to laugh at a clown though.
Everyman (SacsInTheCity)
I am at a loss for words. . . .
Christy (WA)
Poor baby. Didn't like to be laughed at so he left early and took his toys home. You have to be a real goofball to be laughed at by Boris Johnson, himself a subject of some hilarity to many Brits. But by now all the European leaders hold him in contempt. The bully doesn't scare them any more because the so-called leader of the free world has turned out to be a punk. When Macron called NATO brain-dead he was referring to its leader.
J. (Ohio)
I couldn’t help but laugh at the sentence that Trump failed to deliver the “statesmanlike narrative his campaign had hoped for.” When has the man ever been capable of any form of statesmanship? He is a walking mess of destruction whose pathological narcissism controls every utterance from his mouth. He can’t help himself. He’s a lowlife grifter who is in way over his head - to the peril of us all.
Ps (FL)
Georgie Porgie, pudding and pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry, When the boys came out to play, Georgie Porgie ran away.
Consuelo (Paso Robles, CA)
Mr. Trump, the U.N. wasn't laughing at America, they were laughing at your ridiculous boasts. You seem to be the only person in the room that can't tell a difference between our country and your imperial presidency.
EGD (California)
Trudeau did what almost every Canadian does overseas in the presence of foreigners: bad mouths Americans. The only thing missing was a Canadian flag sewn on Trudeau’s backpack.
kvandenboogaard (Amsterdam)
sorry to say but it are the US citizens having a back pack with the Canadian flag.
kenneth (nyc)
@EGD meanwhile, back to this story about the Don leaving the room when somebody told him no.
Somewhere (Arizona)
Yes, you are representing the US, Mr. Trump, and embarrassing us in the process. Please do us all a favor and resign.
Sandra (CA)
trump has acted disrespectfully to the NATO members and so he does not deserve their respect. He has been at the very least horribly rude, and has defended Putin to strengthen Putin and weaken this very effective alliance. Let’s face it folks, he is a waste!
Ilene Starger (Brooklyn, NY)
Note that there is a misspelling/typo in the sentence "In the past, Mr. Trump has been loathe to give up the spotlight, especially if he would be ceding it to a televised impeachment hearing unfolding on Capitol Hill." The word should be 'loath' (as in reluctant), not the verb 'loathe' (as in to abhor.) Thank you.
kenneth (nyc)
@Ilene Starger My copy says "loath."
Ragav (Maryland)
This latest tantrum, brought to you by the same people who espouse liberals should grow thicker skins and not be such snowflakes. Saying this is childish behavior is an insult to children everywhere.
BWCA (Northern Border)
Mácron and Trudeau turned the table on Trump and told him: You’re Fired!
kenneth (nyc)
@BWCA And he left the room saying "You'll be sorry. You'll see. And my daddy says you can't play in our yard anymore. So there."
Roland Berger (Magog, Québec, Canada)
Laughing at this narcissist monster may have disastrous consequences. He just don't care about anything but himself.
DS (Montreal)
Oh come on, everyone is two-faced with Trump.
Eric (Tokyo)
No, Trump, the world is laughing at you and the people who bought into your vitriol.
Rosie (NYC)
Hopefully Trump will finally admit what he deep inside already knows:anybody with an inch of brain laughs at him. An embarrassment every where he goes.
james alan (thailand)
yes he has done this before as reported in the NYT
chamber (new york)
World leaders laughing in public about trump. And trump skulks off with hurt feelings. Isn’t that a bit snowflakey? Trump simply isn’t up to the job.
plages (Los Gatos, California)
It’s interesting that this insecure 45 can spill buckets of bile, and send the military off to protect us abroad, do nothing about the thousands of killings every year here at home, while he and his father, bought off a doctor so that he didn’t have to serve, and now, he cannot even stand up to some laughter! What a sad little man he truly is!
kenneth (nyc)
@plages Yes, he is. But you really ought to find another example. Something more current. They do abound.
Susan Baresel (New York)
Despite the ridicule being richly deserved and the reason for the tardiness correctly stated, it’s a bit sophomoric and petty for world leaders to stoop to this level of cattiness, and could prove destructive. There is no expectation of private interaction when in a public venue and they should know better to practice restraint no matter how understandably high their frustrations. It would not surprise me to see some vengeful and stupid act of retaliation for this current public burn. This occurs while Putin sits back and slaps his knee in glee at the spectacle and ramifications of the divide and conquer of NATO.
kenneth (nyc)
@Susan Baresel So are you saying people should not speak out against him because he might return fire?
Tedj (Bklyn)
This must be his worst nightmare — no one likes him at the party.
Dee (NYC)
Trudeau may be two faced depending on the subject of discussion, but I guess it takes one to know one. In trumps case what happens when you have more faces than a pair of dice! Is Justin really going to be mad and offended by a President who is an avid liar, cheater, manipulator, misogynist, rapist, racist, xenophobe, and keeps a stack of I’m the real “victim” cards in his arsenal. I think Justin has bigger and more important concerns on his plate.
Anglican (Chicago)
Does he appear “boxed in” to Fox News watchers? I bet not.
kenneth (nyc)
@Anglican And therefore ?
diane (boston)
He must know and expect that the world leaders he regularly trash talks on twitter are going to mock his unprofessional and undiplomatic behavior privately. Otherwise, his EQ is lower than I thought...which I didn't think was possible.
AGH (Los Angeles)
Dear NYT, I wonder why you felt the need to write this piece which is deemed "gossipy" by your own words. I am no fan of Trump's. That said, please don't waste our time spreading details of a party that we weren't invited to, nor the participants attending, knew were being filmed. It is gossip, not news.
kenneth (nyc)
@AGH Dear NYT, Keep up the good work.
W. Stevens (New England)
'After calling Democrats “unpatriotic,” Mr. Trump also questioned whether Democrats “loved our country.”' Putin's errand boy has some opinions about patriotism, huh.
Nostradamus Said So (Midwest)
A video of how the other world leaders feel about trump & how he is running America into the ground. They laughed at the UN, now NATO leaders are laughing at him. He just can't handle it & it will keep him awake nights talking to Sean Hannity & tweeting his disgusting nicknames & saying naughty words about all of them. Aaah left out of the boys club again.
angelique (CT)
No guarantee of adulation when the room isn't filled with sycophants. Trump was late for Prince Charles in his childish attempt to look important. Backfires with politicos who aren't required to have decorum.
JP (Portland OR)
If only it were this easy to send him packing.
counsel9 (Island)
Oh Lordy. I think he is going to go off the deep end as he broods about this on his flight home. Some bad things are going to happen. Prof Karlan is in deep twitter doo doo methinks. Maybe just maybe with Christmas at His southern whinge house looming, he will distract himself with golf.
kenneth (nyc)
@counsel9 You may be right about Prof Karlan, but I don't remember reading about her in this story.
Thermal Mass (Australia)
The only reason other leaders of the ‘free’ world talk to him is that he is the POTUS. He is mocked, derided and scorned around the world as the worst President ever dished up. Others see him as an opportunity to further legitimise their own corrupt states and feather their own nests. Truth has taken such a beating because of this vile person perfecting the art of obfuscation, deceitful behaviour and collusion. The irony is he can’t be impeached, as his party is totally complicit. And he probably will be re-elected because religious extremists, white nationalists, gun-toting losers, rich financiers and effectively simpletons ‘buying’ his jingoistic slogans will mobilise his base and re-elect him. Can you imagine the havoc the Republicans will wreak then!?
Lindsey E. Reese (Taylorville IL.)
Sounds like the same thing Democrats said about Reagan. Reagan, being an actor, was smoother, but was mocked as an actor politician by other leaders and Democrats throughout his tenure. His foreign policy was derided as amateurish by many. Watch the Saturday Night Live episodes from 81-89. They rip him apart...I'm old. I remember!
Anthony (New Jersey)
This guy dishes it but can’t take it. We have to get this verbally and mentally challenged person out.
Terry (California)
His shtick has gotten old and folks aren’t having it anymore except for his cult.
concerned (nj)
It took Europe's leaders long enough to get Trump's number. But like all bullies, he's a coward. So he slunk out of London. Now if only the Republican party would take the same cue and start acting like the independent body they're supposed to be.
Sean (Ft Lee. N.J.)
trump: Global embarrassment, laughingstock; U.S. soft power in tatters.
DrexelDragon (NJ)
So he can dish it out but he can't take it? Wow, this guy's skin is thin.
Ted (Ford)
Any chance we can get 20 Republican Senators to hold hands and jump together. I am sooo tired of him
Paolo Masone (Wisconsin)
Trump's comment is like the frying pan calling the kettle black...
Ardyth Shaw (San Diego)
All of this backbiting, name-calling, and gossipping is childish and worthless. The media is supposed to tell the people the truth without emotion but they practice selective and baseless reporting while ignoring meaningful information.
SCZ (Indpls)
Trump is a dangerous laughingstock.
Karl V. (Oregon)
So Trump has stomped off in a pout, taking his ball with him. The man has an infant's mentality.
Lindsey E. Reese (Taylorville IL.)
I think he just cancelled a press conference. Probably angered the press so they made a big deal out of it. It was known he didn't want to make a stir to avoid affecting the UK election. It was a good decision. Much to do about nothing as usual... Just fuel for Trump haters...NYT knows it's base well!
Harry (El paso)
Who cares what the snobbish, self righteous Europeans think about Trump. His supporters love this stuff and the rest hate him no matter what he does It is about time a President stood up to the arrogant Europeans and that annoying manchild that leads Canada
kenneth (nyc)
@Harry Oh. If anybody points out someone's flaws, that someone should just stand up and accuse them of being arrogant. Oh.
harry (el paso)
@kenneth No pointing out Trump's flaws which certainly do exist is not what makes them arrogant. They are ungrateful, self righteous, and full of themselves independent of Trump.
Anthony (New Jersey)
Have you ever listened to the fourth grade grammar that comes out of Trump’s vial mouth?
Therese Miller (Portland)
He can dish it out, but he sure can’t take it. Embarrassing that we have such a thin skinned bully at the head of this country.
Imperato (NYC)
The whole world laughs at you, Mr. Trump.
Noel (Wellington NZ)
Just waiting for a video from POTUS' return trip from London to surface. Tantrum plus no doubt.
Mercutio (Marin County, CA)
Trump is like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Is anyplace safe for him? Not among states where democracy prevails. He's not only out of place, he's completely out of his league. What an embarrassment he is to proud and patriotic Americans.
JWT (Republic of Vermont)
A fool and his allies (?) are soon parted
Don (Charlotte NC)
You mean Trump just found out that most other world leaders think him to be a fool?
M. Stillwell (Nebraska)
OMG, I'm sick of trump dragging our country through the mud.
Patrick Callinan (San Jose, CA)
My Republican friends have long said that world leaders never respected President Obama. I wonder how they can view the events of today and think for a moment that world leaders actually respect President Trump. It is increasingly clear that leaders worldwide laugh at and deride this president on a regular basis -- and today we see this play out on video for everyone to see and hear.
Ratbag (Los angeles)
There have been complaints about Trump after every summit. He arrives late. Schedules pressers involving his domestic issues and keeps everyone waiting. Insults people. Doesn’t understand the issues and lectures his fellow leaders.
kenneth (nyc)
@Ratbag Unfortunately for them (and us?), he doesn't arrive quite late enough.
R (Texas)
Most interesting event at the NATO summit was how little was mentioned of Erdogan. But there he is at the family photo of the NATO summit at Watford standing next to Trump. And for Western Europe, the role of Turkey will likely be crucial for their region.
Reality (WA)
Probably for the first time, Mr Trump was correct. Mr Trudeau is two faced. He professes to be a world leader in fighting climate change, yet directs his government to purchase the tar sands Transmountain pipeline. Yet simultaneously, he adopts legislation restricting tanker traffic in the Salish Sea- the only outlet from the pipeline terminus. Perhaps devious is a better word.
SR (Bronx, NY)
So basically, the right words said for the wrong reasons. As usual for the loser, who cares absolutely nothing for the climate apart from making sure Mar-a-Loco gets coastal protection. It's like he's TRYING to kill off humanity while making sure he can hold out for an NFIP claim.
Larry D. (Brooklyn)
You really think Trump was referring to Trudeau’s stance on CLIMATE CHANGE? It is to laugh.
R Leighton (Canada)
@Reality Mr. Trudeau has two vocal constituencies to address. One wants action on curbing greenhouse gases by shutting down fossil fuel consumption in the country. The other wants to boost their economic prospects by shipping fossil fuel to other markets besides the US, which extracts a discount. He is trying to strike a balance, which means neither side gets 100% of what they demand but does give them something of what they want. Which is good for the country. It is not being two-faced, it is called governing for all.
Frank F (Santa Monica, CA)
This was pretty tame. I'd love to be a fly on the wall and hear what our allies' heads-of-state REALLY say about DJT!
Aaron (Pocatello, Idaho)
@Frank F The wall that Mexico will pay for? ;-)
Jim Mehnert (Kansas City)
Absolutely certain they were holding their tongues.
Linda (OK)
Remember when the world leaders rode a bus together to a memorial for the end of WWI but Trump showed up late with a motorcade that arrived just when the church bells were tolling in honor of the war dead? Trump took a solemn moment and bulldozed his way into it. He does this all the time. He makes world leaders wait. He makes the attendees at his rallies wait. He doesn't even show up to work in the White House until 11 a.m. because he watches TV all morning. This is not only not presidential. This isn't even professional.
kenneth (nyc)
@Linda I'm less interested in "professional" than I would be in "decent." At this point, though, I might be willing to settle for "invisible and silent."
bay1111uq (tampa)
Sad. As a former U.S army that I'm witnessing an American POTUS being mock around the world. While men and women are fighting across the globe and risking their lives for USA, how can they feel proud that Trump's being laugh at.
Anthony (New Jersey)
He did it to himself.
kenneth (nyc)
@Anthony Unfortunately, he's taking us along with him.
counsel9 (Island)
@bay1111uq thank you for your service.
SalinasPhil (CA)
As an American, it makes me very happy and very proud that our allies are standing up to trump. If only the republican party would start doing the same! If only...
Sandra (CA)
@SalinasPhil Well said!
Wanda Pena (San Antonio, TX)
I think it’s sad that the President of the United States is being mocked and laughed at. That goes for any President. I am not a Trump supporter and have experienced the hatred of those strangers who think it’s okay to tell me out of the blue to “go back to where you came from”. That can be scary especially when they drive up to me and I don’t know whether or not they are armed. These people are empowered and encouraged by Mr. Trump. Even if I weren’t an American citizen whose father, husband and son were/are veterans, no one should be treated like that. But I don’t think he could possibly empathize from his humiliation to see what he has wrought upon others. That is not who he is. The President represents us all - and when they laugh and mock him, they laugh and mock us all. Sad thing is, I don’t blame them. We elected him. We brought it on ourselves and now we have to pay the price of our foolishness. I am truly heartbroken about this. I don’t like that I think he deserves it. This is so hard for me who loves this country.
Alexandre (Paris)
It was also reported by a french journalist that these images were filmed by the russian media Ruptly, then exploited by CBC. This chat is a non-story, and I am baffled it succeeds to shadow the NATO's 70 years anniversary and fragilise the alliance. Who benefits of it?
Eric Thompson (Chicago)
Actually in a perverse way this serves Putin. Trump will be incensed and retaliate once again at our allies. God help the Ukranians who sit on the front lines
Observer (Mid Atlantic)
If we are truly honest, I believe that Europeans, it just the leaders, are collectively laughing at those of us in US of A who elected Trump. They simply can’t believe a grifter like Trump leads us and what we call the Free World. One day while listening to a BBC interview with a typical American I got a sense of that. The interviewer asked about Trump and how this person would vote in 2020 and why. The response from this typical person was that gas prices have been low and therefore Trump is doing a “good job.” I was shocked and I would imagine that many BBC listeners abroad were as well.
Jim Mehnert (Kansas City)
His believer’s are simply exhibiting cult behavior. So many examples. He had a great team of marketer’s, the Russians, to make him successful. But Europe is not immune to this manipulated behavior.
kenneth (nyc)
“Well, he’s two-faced,” the president said when asked about the video. After a long pause, he added, “He’s a nice guy. I find him to be a very nice guy.” NOW DOESN'T THAT SOUND TWO-FACED IN ITSELF ??
Ronald (NYC)
@kenneth Trump has so many faces that he confuses himself.
John Doe (Johnstown)
But instead of creating a split screen, Mr. Trump failed to produce the statesmanlike narrative his campaign had hoped for. Trump is in an enviable position. He doesn’t need to ”sell” himself to his true believer supporters anymore like his opponents have to try and do. Why shouldn’t he just up and leave, they probably were boring him anyway, especially the young know-it-alls.
Fred (Korea)
I’m beginning to think that Trump isn’t the master negotiator that everyone said he was at the start of his presidency.
Mark W (New York)
Beginning ? I assume that is sarcasm
Larry Greenfield (New York City)
A few global leaders shared a laugh By mocking our very own Falstaff But since their words were saved With their privacy waived They might just become Trump’s epitaph
Judy (NYC)
@Larry Greenfield Doesn't scan right. Try this one: A few heads of state shared a laugh At America's hapless Falstaff But their words being saved With their privacy waived, They could become Trump's epitaph.
Religionistherootofallevil (NY)
Perhaps the most glaring evidence of his particular pathology is that Trump could imagine anyone would NOT talk about him this way! The man needs to be in a care facility until his loved ones can figure out what’s best for him.
Dennis B. (West Point, UT)
"Loved ones?"
Alan (Chicago)
Spot on!!!
macbeth (canada)
This Canadian is once again appalled at our Prime Minister's blundering approach to relations with our most important ally and trading partner. The fact that he got re-elected recently is beyond comprehension.
BWCA (Northern Border)
@macbeth What’s beyond comprehension is how Trump got elected in the first place. I had the pleasure of living in Canada in the past. I’ll trade Trump for Trudeau with all his human faults in a heartbeat.
H. Clark (Long Island, NY)
It's ironic that Trump, who made somewhat of a name for himself as a reality TV star, feels slighted by a rather entertaining video of world leaders laughing at him. Isn't he going to sue them? Send Rudy out to dig up dirt on Macron and Trudeau? Certainly he'll seek some form of retribution. It's a grand image — Trump sitting alone in the residence, sulking over being the last picked for the kickball team. He so deserves it.
Kaari (Madison WI)
Is Trump perhaps not aware that other world leaders take note of his buffoonish behavior at his rallies?
Judy (NYC)
@Kaari He is completely unaware of how others see him and he doesn't care. All that concerns him is the groveling adulation of his adoring base. As long as he has that, nothing else matters to him.
kenneth (nyc)
@Judy You may certainly be right, but ... if he really is unaware, how would you expect him to care ?
Bascom Hill (Bay Area)
This decision in London by Team Trump is promising. Maybe Trump will also abruptly leave the White House.
BWCA (Northern Border)
That’s on my New Year’s wish list.
Armo (San Francisco)
I am taking delight in our president being mocked and made fun of by the other leaders of democratic countries. That is so sad.
Brodston (Gretna, Nebraska)
Look for a speech outlining the urgent need for a wall to go up against Canada.
Berry Stone (Grand Junction, CO)
Thank you Trudeau and all who have the courage to stand up to bully Trump and speak the truth without fear. We need help from outside to save the USA or we are over.
Jayson Blair (My Masters House)
@Berry Stone Are you stoned? He didn't stand up to anyone. He gossiped like a little preppy when the target of his ire was safely out of the room. He never would have said anything if he knew he was being taped. I'm surprised you find that brave. The things people say behind your back led me to think otherwise.
Beatrice Pinch (Los Angeles, California)
The I'm Rubber You're Glue President has single-handled brought discourse down to a fifth grade, fighting in the school yard level, and then complains when it bounces back at him. These world leaders on a world stage knew full well that they were on camera. They are not laughing at the United States and they are not laughing with Trump, they are laughing at him.
j s (oregon)
I stopped reading here: "Mr. Trump failed to produce the statesmanlike narrative his campaign had hoped for." Who would ever think trump capable of statesmanship?
Mexico Mike (Guanajuato)
"Mr. Trump has long bridled at the thought that other world leaders might poke fun at the United States." This has never been true and the Times knows it. Trump has no concern for our country other than as a proxy for his ego. He refers to himself in the third person, tells us all we need to know.
kenneth (nyc)
@Mexico Mike Mr Trump bridles at the thought that others recognize him for what he is.
Jim Steinberg (Fresno, Calif.)
Not even I, who despise Trump, can deny that he is a master at alienating our allies.
BKNY (NYC)
Mommy the other campers are making fun of me. I want to go home.
CF (Massachusetts)
When Fiona Hill testified, she mentioned that many foreign officials including Heads of State had negative things to say about Donald Trump when he was a candidate. They felt free to express their true opinions because none of them believed Americans would ever elect him. She seemed very disappointed in their behavior because Ms. Hill is someone who takes the world quite seriously and doesn't believe it ever advisable, in diplomatic circles, to openly denigrate anyone. Ms. Hill also mentioned that she kept a file of all the negative comments, I think to be able to do some sort of international damage control in the event Trump got wind of any of them. That they all continue to have negative things to say about Donald Trump comes as no surprise. Frankly, I wish they'd do two things: stop smirking and eye-rolling, and remember that phones are everywhere. We're the ones who have to put up with his nasty remarks and tweets when he gets home. So, please, have pity on us.
Gary FS (Avalon Heights, TX)
President Trump apparently did make his campaign lie come true. The world is indeed laughing at us.
Mark (BVI)
Every now and then Trump does something that makes me laugh rather than weep. This is one of those times.
kvandenboogaard (Amsterdam)
we shouldn't forget that not only Trump is not respected by any democratic country leader but also his 85 million diehard supporters.
Claudia (CA)
You had me at "statesmanlike narrative." This man is unfit to hold the office of president of the United States. Either remove him via impeachment or through the 25th amendment. We can't count on the election being being fair.
PJ (Colorado)
Trump is the laughing stock of the world and, indirectly, so are we. Apparently his party doesn't mind being complicit, which is no laughing matter.
Eric Sekyere (Sydney)
When mighty America and 30 other countries band together to create NATO against a couple of possible rogue states in order to keep the peace, they don't need to spend the whole dowry on arms. Maybe America needs to cut down its defence spending to match other NATO states. At present, it appears a defence spending equivalent to killing a mosquito with a gun shot. Disproportionate.
Jayson Blair (My Masters House)
@Eric Sekyere There's a good article in Politico right now outlining that NATO has fallen afar from its mission. What started out as a handful of countries directly affected by WWII has grown to 29, many of which didn't even exist back then. NATO members no longer have uniform concerns or common relationships with one another. Russia remains a catalyst, but it is not the threat the Soviet Union was.
Pietro Allar (Forest Hills, NY)
Trudeau is two-faced? Well Trump would know about that, wouldn’t he? Like looking in a mirror. I thought “great leaders” were able to handle such minor irritations when they work the deal? Oh, yes, dealmaking “stable genius” Trump couldn’t sell snow to a snowman.
gems (vancouver)
It may be a bit puerile for prime ministers and presidents to chatter in public about another head of state but it is even more puerile to use such mild commentary as an excuse to leave the summit. Good heavens, what magnitude of child is he?
NextGeneration (Portland)
Here it is, a situation in which Trump is publicly shamed or talked about on video on the international scene. He can't control those doing the so called shaming, so he packs up his marbles and goes home. Textbook narcissistic reaction. Really a helpful response on his part for the position of the US.
W. Stevens (New England)
"But the video played directly into Mr. Trump’s own fixation with rival leaders laughing at him, or at the United States." NO, come on, NYTimes. Trump only cares about people laughing at HIM. Our allies by and large respect and count on the USA. No one respects Trump, the thin-skinned bully. And that includes the vast majority of Americans.
Liza (Chicago)
He's a man-baby. That he doesn't understand how he is viewed is startling. That video was a big nothing and it shouldn't have been released.
Bob Washick (Conyngham)
There was a time you respected the president. I questioned that now. Trudeau may be two faced. According to trump. But then later Trump may invite him to the White House and give them a great big hug. And this is democracy, at work.
dog lover (boston)
Oh, and I'm sure that Trudeau and the rest of the world leaders are just devastated by Trump's comment - Doubt it.
dba (nyc)
Hm... he felt insulted by the mockery. Guess he doesn't like a taste of his own medicine. He needs to lighten up and develop a sense of humor. But then, this is typical of people like him who are so deeply insecure and deprived of love that they must stomp on others to feel good about themselves. I almost feel sorry for him because as democratic strategist Paul Begala once observed, his mama must not have hugged him much.
Jana (Enkhuizen, Netherlands)
That's Dutch PM Mark Rutte with his back to us, and is that Princess Anne between Rutte and Trudeau?
Catherine Barroll (Canada)
Trudeau’s response would probably be like his father, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, when asked what he thought of being trashed by Nixon: ” I’ve been called worse, by better people.”
Jayson Blair (My Masters House)
@Catherine Barroll Actually, Trump should maybe have said it. In your analogy, Justin would be Nixon.
Holly (NYC)
Oh please. This is not shocking and not a story. The majority of people find Trump to be both inhumane and intolerable. The leaders mentioned here are permitted to discuss what they want and when they want. Trump is not the victim here. Let them vent. Those who don't want Fox News are in need of some group therapy.
SLD (California)
Trump embarrassed the country once again. World leaders looking at a President in the process of being impeached by his own government must have plenty to talk about. They will be happy when there is an intelligent, honest President, just like us.
Mine2 (WA)
We feel your pain, world leaders. The embarrassment is a daily reality.
WTig3ner (CA)
Well, one thing Mr. Trump certainly knows is what "two-faced" means; he excels in it. What does he expect world leaders to think of him given the way he acts? He behaves as if there are no consequences for what he says and does. Reality has a nasty way of intruding on that.
Dave Mas (Washington DC)
Trump can dish it out but he can’t take it. He’s so thin skinned, leaving in a huff. But it’s no surprise they laugh at him. He was likely scary at first, but now he just looks so out of control that it must be funny to see at times.
Working mom (San Diego)
Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. - Eleanor Roosevelt
Agnate (Canada)
Trump can't stand seeing people relaxing and having fun. He makes fun and insults people all-the-time. Trudeau just said he was late because he was talking for 45 extra minutes. It was true and funny.
Jplydon57 (Canada)
How the adults in the room deal with Trump isn't surprising, but because it is about a POTUS, it gets covered. SAD. I can't wait for the day we no longer hear about how an inept and thin-skinned man is coping with adult life.
Flossy (Australia)
How amusing that Trump still thinks the world is not laughing at him. Or at America for electing a disaster like him, for that matter. We will continue to laugh until this joke has ended.
Urban Mann (Portland)
I have this picture in my head of Don and Melania standing in the corner with no one talking to them and no one caring.
d.p. (muttentown)
It appears that Mr. Trump has shown us how insecure he really is. This is yet another middle school like tantrum on the world stage. He is a man-child who is concerned with only himself and his self image. To think that this man is making decisions that effect the entire world and the people in it, is beyond a grave concern.
Jp (Michigan)
"Trump Calls Trudeau ‘Two-Faced’ " At least Trump got one thing right.
Leon (Earth)
Trump did the right thing in whistling for his plane and returning to the US. But he would have done better if he had sent someone qualified to represent the US at this meeting instead of making himself the subject of ridicule, once again. He knows that he is totally incapable of presenting a logical position from the US at this meetings with world leaders, they know it and everybody who watches him knows it. He should save himself the roasting.
Vic Bold II (Bellingham, WA)
Video not nearly as snarky as the Ivanka “contribution” to impromptu conversation at Osaka G20 meetup. Hilarity ensued after that priceless moment...Trump family needs some tutelage on interacting with informed personages.
Aco (Toronto)
Well, I’m so pleased to know I voted for the right person in our last election. C’mon America, your turn next!
Jenifer (Rochester, NY)
I believe they are laughing at how bad the spray tan really is and they were not laughing when others have held this office.
Mike Edwards (Providence, RI)
Trump, looking for a reason not to be there, found it. End of.
Amy (Concord CA)
I avoid listening to Trump, but the news conference came on and the I was just dumbstruck. Here is our president in front of NATO and the Italian president, and he went on an on and on about how mean the Democrats are treating him, how innocent he is, the perfect call (two perfect calls) and what a travesty it all is. I guess he doesn't know what NATO is or why he was there. It's so embarrassing. And that's all it takes go get rid of this man: insult him. He can't take it.
Jim (TX)
If Trudeau is two-faced, then how many faces describes Trump?
Mike C. (Florida)
Big surprise that Trump slunk back to the United States. He isn't remotely presidential....
susan (nyc)
Trudeau is two-faced? Just a few weeks ago Trump called Adam Schiff "a really smart guy." Yesterday he called Schiff "crazy." Now that is two-faced.
Tom Q (Minneapolis, MN)
When the going gets tough, Donald gets going.
WTig3ner (CA)
@Jerry Schulz I have worked with children all my life. I have never known a fourth-grader to descend to Trump's level.
Roy (NH)
A two-faced politician. That had to be a first.
Patrick alexander (Oregon)
Another day, another story in which this guy Trump”lashes out” at someone. Do members of the GOP and his supporters still believe that these are the actions of a mentally healthy human being?
Steven D Smith (Los Angeles, CA)
Of course Donald Trump is the laughing stock among NATO politicians, Trump speaks like an elementary school brat, and tweets like whining baby. President Trump's major international accomplishment is that he's diminished USA's standing on the world stage, though he acts like he's somehow made the country stronger. To foreign leaders accustomed to looking at the USA for guidance, that must seem pretty funny. As a citizen, I'm not laughing.
MLE53 (NJ)
Two-faced is exactly what trump is. I commend all the leaders who dissed trump. Please do it often. trump deserves ridicule every single minute of every single day.
Stickler (New York, NY)
I supposed on the continuum of adolescent critique, being "two faced" is not quite as bad as "nasty."
Elizabeth Cole (Pikeville,KY)
Well, Mr. President, Justin Trudeau is also extremely attractive. I bet it irks you when you catch Melania and Ivanka staring at him with lust in their eyes.
Panthiest (U.S.)
Trump can dish it out, but he can't take it.
common sense advocate (CT)
Not everyone is laughing...a whole lot are just cringing.
Landy (East and West)
Whatever one thinks of Trump, for foreign leaders to be gossiping and sneering at an international meeting of NATO is beyond tacky. They have definitely lowered themselves in world opinion.
Doug Trollope (Mitchell, Canada)
If Trudeau did, someone had to do it!
MyOpinion (NYC)
All of us must turn our back on Donald. We must encourage the impeachment of him. The world laughs and is horrified at us for our lying president. And I feel the same. Donald must be shown the door... and I don't want him back in NYC either. I never want to see him again. Ever!
steve boston area (no shore)
Rather than say that they were discussing him... the headline should read.. They were laughing at him.
IN (New York)
Trump loves only himself, not America and certainly not the Constitution and the rule of law. I am tired of his extreme partisanship and his demagoguery especially concerning his Democratic colleagues. He sullies the office of the Presidency with his inappropriate conduct and slanderous remarks. He harms the civility necessary in the proper functioning of a democracy in which disagreements are welcome and compromise a requirement. He should be reminded that he lost the popular vote of all the people by 3 million votes in a tainted election with Russian interference that he welcomed. I believe he is unqualified for the honor of serving all the people and in a real sense is an illegitimate misfit!
JM (East Coast)
While I don’t disagree with the substance of the gossip, Frau Kanzlerin Merkel always comes across as the grown up in the room at these summits.
Judy (NYC)
"Nobody laughs at me! I'll show them! I'm gonna take my marbles 'n' go home!"
Bill W (Vermont)
To hark's point and those who recommended it: Trump's ranting, raving, and complaining about his domestic problems at a NATO gathering is an important story because it shows world leaders just how wacko the guy is. World leaders finally stood up to him and laughed at his ridiculous remarks. So, he picked up his ball, wouldn't play anymore, and went home to sulk.
db2 (Phila)
If you can’t take the heat... May it rain videos!
Gail Menzel (Flemington NJ)
"President Trump arrived in London Monday evening planning to tout a foreign policy accomplishment his presidential campaign wants him to run on: successfully pressuring allies to pay more toward the costs of running NATO." Is this a correct statement? I thought the allies agreed to increase their funding for their own defense, not to increase their contributions toward the support of NATO operations. Please explain.
Harry (Olympia Wa)
Unfortunately, I don’t think Trump failed at all. He’s casting himself the victim of “snobbish, sneaky Europeans” —almost an archetype of historical American enmity to the old world. It’ll be red meat to his base. He also successfully presents himself as a champion of America in the face of “freeloaders.”
Brett (MA)
@Harry I think you're correct. None of his base own a passport or have every been out of NA, and finer points of global economics are completely beyond them.
Panthiest (U.S.)
@Harry You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don't think Trump planned to be the butt of jokes at the gathering or knew that Boris Johnson wanted him to keep his distance. Trump will try to spin it to make himself look like it was all planned, but those of us who actually saw the show know better.
Kit (US)
@Harry And the mob will buy it, I'm afraid.
Jim Wooden (Vancouver, WA)
Narcissistic injury would seem to be incompatible with the reasonable and efficient execution of a nation’s affairs. Sad.
Bokmal (USA)
Much ado about nothing. Shabby reporting about a so-called "conversation" among world leaders (purported to be critical of Trump), much of which the reporter freely admits was not clearly recorded.
chamber (new york)
@Bokmal: So trump stormed out of the summit with hurt feelings only because he thought they were mocking him, not because they actually were?
David (France)
I’ll take either of Trudeau’s faces over Trump’s single one, any day.
rxft (nyc)
@David Hilarious! And definitely should've been a NYT Pick.
Cary (Oregon)
Keep laughing at Trump. He wants to be emperor, but he has no emperor clothes. With every dis, with every biting comment, with every slight, his power fades. Keep laughing until he cracks.
Luc (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
I recall a hot mic incident where Trump said that he grabs "you know what". Didn't he say it was a private conversation, locker room talk, and blamed the people recording it? Who's two-faced now?
Kenny (South Park)
Accusing someone of being two faced does not negate the fact that you yourself is two faced. Basic logical reasoning. Don’t they teach it in Bova Scotia schools? Also, don’t forget the widely famous children saying: “it takes one to know one”, which is highly applicable here albeit its elementary school origins.
anna (detroit, mi)
"Trudeau is two-faced" ... but he's so so so dreamy!
Colenso (Cairns)
Progressives and genuine conservatives alike despise Trump because Trump behaves despicably. But that's not the most important issue right here. The most important issue here is that NATO has failed to keep a resurgent and incorrigibly corrupt and tyrannical Russian Empire in check under its current Muscovy princeling Vladimir Putin. Furthermore, Trump, who as 45 is the leader of the free world, has failed to stick up to Putin. Moreover, Canada and Australia, and every European major leader has failed to stick up to Putin. The second most important issue is that NATO has failed to eradicate Da'esh. The third most important issue is that NATO should never have allowed Turkey, another vicious and incorrigibly corrupt anti-European tyranny, to join NATO. By the standard of the commitment made in 2013 by its own members, NATO is underfunded. In July 2017, an NPR fact check, which concluded that as per usual Trump was telling porkies, found: 'NATO members did make a commitment four years ago to spend at least 2 percent of their GDP on defense by 2024. Just nine of the military alliance's 29 members are expected to reach or surpass that target this year.' And 'Germany indeed devotes only about 1.25 percent of its GDP to defense. While it has boosted defense spending the past two years, Germany, like about half the other NATO members, does not plan to reach 2 percent by 2024.' https://www.npr.org/2018/07/11/628137185/fact-check-trumps-claims-on-nato-spending
Colenso (Cairns)
@Colenso Oops, I meant to write 2014 not 2013; and July 2018 not July 2017
Elsa (Minneapolis, MN)
I see Trump found an excuse to skip the rest of the NATO gathering. It's becoming more and more obvious that he has mental health problems which make these sorts of events difficult and embarrassing for him. Half the time he looks confused and out of place, and when he talks he's just recycling the same list of ridiculous lies and grievances. Of course Trudeau and Macron make fun of him. He's ridiculous. His family should show some mercy and persuade the old man to retire.
Slann (CA)
The only "two-faced" person at the NATO meeting was the representative from the U.S., the one who stubbornly, and stupidly, refuses to publicly respect and accept the findings of ALL the U.S. intelligence agencies. Instead, he accepts the lies, in the Helsinki public news conference, of the ex-KGB agent in charge of russia. The "president" is disloyal, both to the U.S. Constitution, and to the American people.
Kevin McGarry (Fort Worth)
Look, Trump's not my favorite but compared to the weak trio drinking their Kool-Aid, Trump is the Yankees and they are the also rans....need at least the Red Sox to be in the same league
Austin (Easthampton, MA.)
Only two faces? Trump has more faces than any other American President. It’s part of the con.
Alejandro Garcia (Atlanta)
This behavior is all too typical of Trump. Seems he can talk trash about anyone at any time, but the second someone returns the favor, he acts like the victim. That man is not fit to run his own company, much less the country.
Valerie (Nevada)
In Trumps messed up mind, he thinks he is a God amongst all men. Hardly. Trump is a fool, a clown and most assuredly, the subject of much gossip among the true leaders of the world. This conversation, unfortunately, was live. Although nothing that was said was incorrect. Trump was late for a grand entrance no doubt. And I am sure the jaws of Trump's staff hit the floor all the time. I know mine does listening to his speeches and reading his text. This conversation was quite tame. Imagine what world leaders say of Trump in their private chambers? Now that, I would love hear.
Ant (CA)
I grew up in a hick town and spend most of my working life sitting around in workout clothes and surrounded by people who don't even shower regularly. We have discussed this situation and all of us know that it's bad manners to keep coworkers waiting. I think our reaction in the same situation would have been much ruder than what we saw from Macron, Trudeau, and Johnson. Trump could have come out on top if he had simply behaved as though nothing had happened. If he had done that, he could have made them look like mean boys. Instead he has freaked out, adding "thin-skinned princess" to "obnoxious and arrogant latecomer who thinks it's OK to keep world leaders waiting." He is an embarrassment and those who voted for him should be ashamed at foisting a president on us who is an embarrassment in front of the world.
Ginger (Washington DC)
He's the Canadian prime minister, not the premier. Come on.
Catherine Barroll (Canada)
I would have to criticize my PM on just one thing: not calling Trump’s administration out for the depravity of its child concentration camps along the Mexican border. In that respect, I wish his sincerity would take the lead. But beyond that, I recognize his diplomatic silence up til now, as he still haD to negotiate with the US through conversation with a petty, spiteful, “leader” . I admire his self control. And in this case, he’s placing the responsibility for lateness where it deserves to be, on the Baby Grand.
Sally Peabody (Boston)
Oh poor dear. Act like a total boar in a china shop and cry alligator tears when your behaviour is commented on. Leadership is about building alliances with allies, sometimes with those who are less salubrious if there is a worthy goal. The way Trump treats long time strategic allies is a disgrace to the Presidency. So disrespectful, so transactional. I agree with another Times reader that Trump's utterly unhinged comments about Adam Schiff are the real news here. The power of projection and deflection all wrapped into a sad effort to take down a smart, decent public servant who has shown courage and grace in prosecutiing the case against the rule-despising President. How can this man talk like this and have the support of decent Americans? Are conservative judges and women being punished for exercising reproductive rights really worth this disgraceful behavior? Our allies and our 'enemies' are looking elsewhere for partnerships having learned not to trust American leadership. So much damage from this clueless narcissist.
Katrina (Florida)
I believe Trump tweeted back in 2014 that we needed a president the world wouldn’t laugh at. How’s that going?
Pat (WV)
I'm certain Putin laughs at Trump, they just haven't caught it on tape.
DonnieInNC (Charlotte NC)
This wasn't a hot mic moment, it was "Locker Talk". Trump knows all about locker talk so he should be okay with what Trudeau said.
Steve Singer (Chicago)
President Trump is a joke in the eyes of the world. The ultimate triumph of “Make America Great Again”.
Rachel (Denver)
Glad to hear Trudeau and Macron speaking up, either in a small group or in front of cameras. It’s time for other world leaders to speak out against Trump. Stop pretending he’s normal. It’s long over due to call him out for his ridiculous and dangerous behavior. Speak up even louder next time Justin!
Dwayne Moholitny (Paris, France)
'"By this point in his tenure, the prime minister should realise that events with pool cameras need to be approached and managed as on the record events,” Andrew MacDougall, who was a spokesman for Mr. Trudeau’s predecessor, Stephen Harper.' Ah yes, Harper. There's something about summits in London that hearken back, ten years, when good ol' Stevie kept world leaders waiting while he took a bathroom break. Our international embarrassment, your international embarrassment; hold fast, fellow Americans, the nightmare's almost over.
Marie (Michigan)
Herr Drumpf cannot possibly think that other world leaders like and respect him, can he? He lacks any self-censoring, drags comments on internal impeachment issues onto the world stage and then is surprised that more intelligent leaders are appalled and mock him? Despicable AND clueless.
Leading Cynic (SoFla)
They're not laughing at the United States mr. trump, they're laughing at YOU.
wak (MD)
Oh, it's just Trump at his diplomatic best! Actually, to be insulted by him ought to be taken by the one insulted as an honor. Anything to be different from him! It's gotten that bad. And he's our president. What an embarrassment.
Bob (NJ)
Exhibit # 457 that our President has the mentality of a middle school lunch table occupant
Passion for Peaches (Left Coast)
Oh, dear. Our president is like that unpopular kid in 8th grade, who had no idea he wasn’t liked — or why — and turned up at all the parties anyway and invariably acted like a buffoon, insulting people and dancing crazy. And then when he found himself abandoned in the corner, alone and ignored, and not having a good time, he flounced out the door and yelled that everyone there was stupid and would be sorry some day. Remember that kid? That’s Trump.
EAP (Bozeman, MT)
Poor Donald. He can dish it out but he can't take it.....
Dan (Toronto)
You only need watch the faces of leaders sitting next to POTUS at one of his shambolic "news conferences" to see they have utterly fake respect for him.
Doug Lowenthal (Nevada)
Trump is clearly the big baby elephant in the room.
su (ny)
When the discussion is about moral values of Trump ? I remember the scene in the movie Young Frankenstein! "I know some doctors they can help of your hump" "What hump?." Trump; What moral value?
Misou (Earth)
Ha, ha, ha... talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Where in politics anywhere could you find someone more two-faced than donald trump?
Tessa (Airdrie AB)
PM Trudeau should not be pointing any bony fingers at anyone considering his track record of performing 'blackface' while he was a drama teacher at a ritzy private school - of paying off a known terrorist with Canadian taxpayers money in a backroom deal ( 10 $ MILLION ) - of corruption charges with SNC Lavalin - of incompetence in dealing with Canada's Oil/Gas/Pipeline Industry. Meanwhile, the private Trudeau Trust Fund , that is managed by his brother, has grown from a mere $2.5 million to a staggering $ 760 million - all while he has been in public office. This slimy , incompetent man does not even remotely pass the "smell test".
PeteH (MelbourneAU)
You got any evidence of wrongdoing?
kenneth (nyc)
@Tessa Thanks to you, I went back to reread the story and see what M Trudeau had to say. It was so far down in the text that I simply hadn't realized it was the main feature of the story.
Mercutio (Marin County, CA)
@Tessa ... Wait! I'm confused. Isn't this just a thinly disguised fairy tale about President Grifter, Donald J.Trump?
Chuck (CA)
Simply put.. this is just a real live example of "the pot calling the kettle black". Hypocrisy <---- now that is book Trump could actually write, with the help of a ghost writer who does not need to use crayons.. of course.
Selena61 (Canada)
@Chuck Don, Jr.'s guy is probably available.
johnw (pa)
After two + years of gutteral, despicable and unpresidential slime-lies, trump/gop & their talking parrots have miles to climb up out of their gutter before they can complain about anyone.
GC (NYC)
Why yes, this is a pretty fair comment. Mister Trudeau, as we now all know, has his white face; and then... he has the other one.
Lewis M Simons (Washington, DC)
Yes, Donald, the world does consider you a joke. Take Mick's advice: "Get over it."
jerry lee (rochester ny)
Reality Check i dont buy the he said she said .This is all but greatest show on earth. We live in time of Great Deception our beautifull country being turned into bunch deplorables. Streets of america have record homeless Homeless dieing as fast being replaced with more homeless. Drugs ruining minds of future leaders because they are allowed to thru inaction by those who sworn to protect an serve Canada legalized pot for reasons that work an stops the cycle of crime in streets. Like canadas leader he has vission wish our president take notice an save usa from distruction of poisons killing our children.
Irene (Denver, CO)
Please take a look in the mirror, Mr. Trump, before you call anyone "two-faced."
Opinioned! (NYC)
That world leaders are laughing at Trump behind his back is a given. In the after-after party, a few might even be doing some impersonations of his bloated sweaty face, murder of the English language, and that annoying word salad that rambles on without going nowhere. “The world is laughing at us.” — Donald J. Trump
Harpo (Toronto)
Trudeau should speak with Macron en francais in the future.
PeteH (MelbourneAU)
Well, how about that, America's allies don't hold Donald Trump in high regard, and after all the nice things he's said about them. Not. The man is a buffoon, a bully, an ignoramus. He deserves every bit of mockery and derision that comes his way. He's an embarrassment to the United States.
Joseph Alvarez (Houston)
Although Macron’s comments may be on point, I take no pleasure in seeing my President being, well, shamed.
Kevin (Vancouver)
If you could only hear what the rest of the country is saying about you, Donald.
Michele K (Ottawa)
@Kevin And the world - let's be honest.
Catherine (Chicago)
How many hundreds of thousands are losing food stamp privileges in your article underneath this? How much are we paying for these trips…and as Fiona Hill pointed out, they tried to keep the visiting parties to a minimum because it is on the taxpayers dime. These insipid games of 'king of the mountain' would make most of the America people want to spit. Boris Johnson makes me laugh—there he is with his mouth open, and when he says, 'I really don't know what is being referred here,' Well, dang, what were you doing? Catching flies?
Adam Richards (St. Catharines, Ontario)
Really? We care what Trump says? It makes a to him what we say? There isn't any support in Canada for Trump, and we think he's an embarrassment to you Americans. We feel sad for you; we're not laughing at America at all, but basing any discussion of any kind on any subject at any time in any venue on what Dear Leader thinks "right now" is like choosing where to sail based on where the wind is blowing from "right now". I speak for a lot of Canadians when I say that calling Trump out in whatever fashion is the best thing we can do for the world. If people stopped pretending he was sane and the president, neither of which can be proven, reporters would go hungry and His Specialness would go home. Why pick apart the politics or logic of someone who ain't got none? Why analyze how a monkey plays chess? And lest we forget, Trudeau, Macron, and even Johnson are so much smarter and better-read than Trump that you might want to wonder how they all get "caught" mumbling their frustrations aloud when they know they're in a room of reporters with cheap cell phones. None of them actually mentioned Trump in the "conversation", which leaves a lot of plausible deniability, and maybe it's the only way to make him actually listen. Many of you worship the guy, but the only reason we ever keep quiet is because the idiots who work for him somehow feel compelled to carry out his pronouncements, which places the world's safety and economy in danger. Besides, Trudeau's polite. Weird, huh?
Chicago Guy (Chicago, Il)
More reverse praise from our Fake President Donald "do us a favor" Trump.
Anthony Jenkins (Canada)
Justin Trudeau speaks for the vast majority of Canadians in thinking your President is a buffoon. He may, in the opinion of some of our US neighbours,, be 'making America great again', but to the world he's a danger and an embarrassment. The latter is your problem. The former, a problem for all of us.
FreddieBeach (Fred NB)
Trump is a bully and one shouldn't back down on him, call him out as his alternative facts are usually wrong. He only wins with weaklings.
David Ross (Toronto)
At the end of this article Andrew MacDougall is quoted with comments critical of Trudeau. He was a spokesman for former Prime Minister Stephen Harper who was so soundly defeated by Justin Trudeau. When Justin Trudeau’s election victory puts you out of a job,you might be just a tad biased
Ann (Louisiana)
“The world is laughing at us,” [Trump] said frequently during the campaign, criticizing the leadership of President Barack Obama. No, Donald. The world is laughing at YOU. And that includes Putin, Erdogan, Kim and your other thug buddies. It’s not just Trudeau, Macron, and Johnson. Donald, they are ALL laughing at you. Don’t think that video conversation is an isolated incident. Poor you.
linh (ny)
@Ann no, the world is laughing at us for having allowed him and his cronies any position in the first place.
M.R. Sapp (San Diego)
Same old story .... Trump acts like an insensitive idiot. And I believe that because he had to know that comment would surface ... on film, or audio. I am so tired of this farce of a presidency. It can't end soon enough for me.
Lisa Simeone (Baltimore, MD)
Fox headline: "Trump plans abrupt NATO departure after world leaders appear to mock him" Oh, dear. You mean Dear Leader got his feelings hurt? So now he's taking his marbles and going home? Who wouldathunkit?!
Entre (Rios)
Lord, people have to vent.
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
Our President is seen as a bumbling , ignorant fool and every meeting he has reenforces it. He is literally the laughing stock of the world. Now, added to this, a criminal fool, Remember when Obama was "the man" and all waited for his advice and counsel?
Pottree (Joshua Tree)
Dat Trump, man! A real class act! Sure am glad he’s representing my interests or else. About time we had an ogre of our own to stick up for America. You! Pipsqueek! Gimme your lunch money! Gotta love him!
Jane K (Northern California)
Mr Trump, put on your big boy pants and get over it. If you have a problem with someone, be a grownup and talk to him directly and in private. And quit giving people reason to laugh at you.
Paul Raffeld (Austin Texas)
Pot /Kettle .
Peter (Mass)
To be laughed at by Boris Johnson: you've arrived as the buffoon's buffoon.
Robert (Out west)
Nah, Trump, he’s not two-faced at all. Trudeau (and all the rest) have thought you were a worthless, bullying blimp all along—you’re just too dumb to know what the brand of civillity with which you’ve been treated means.
C (D)
Shame on you NY Times. As an avid reader and disgusted civilian during the Trump presidency this type of reporting is beneath you. Leave it to the gossip mags and focus on the dem candidates.
Dadof2 (NJ)
Donald Trump is an expert on being two-faced, being a liar, breaking one's personal word, breaking one's business word, and, now, repeatedly breaking our nation's word. But he's such a blind self-centered monster that when HE does something, no matter how horrible, he thinks it's wonderful, but when ANYONE does the exact same thing to him (or less) then HE rips them apart as a "horrible, terrible, nasty person".
Dee (Anchorage, AK)
I wonder if Trump is aware that EVERYBODY around him is two-faced: sucking up to him to his face and then cringing with fellow sufferers when he's not around.
TomL (Here)
The world sees President Obama as a thoughtful, educated and sincere man. Whereas the world believes that Donald Trump is a loser with all the finesse and demeanor of a demented circus clown.
Heather (San Diego, CA)
This story is gossip. We need news. President Trump's failures are buried under an avalanche of trivial mockery. Citizens annoyed by elitist sneering or fed up with cruel online gossip are likely to feel sympathy for the target. Trump is a toxic leader and co-worker. He doesn’t consult with his colleagues, Republican or Democrat. Quite a few people (hundreds of Kurds, hundreds of Iranians, and dozens of migrants) have died who would be alive today if Hilary Clinton were president. His economic policy choices horrify both conservative and liberal economists. His foreign policy choices unnerve both conservative and liberal policy experts. His military policies stun U.S generals because choices made from ignorance endanger American soldiers, harm important international alliances, and assist nation state rivals. His “achievements” are a sham. North Korea is NOT less of a threat; the nation only dismantled minor weapon sites while continuing to test missiles and threaten South Korea. Iran is NOT less of a threat; reneging on the nuclear agreement killed deal-making and sanctions hurt the moderates who once stood with the West. European allies feel abandoned by a completely unpredictable U.S. The economy is NOT great because Trump only boosted the stock market by dramatically increasing debt and the odds of a future crash. Please report how Trump the Incompetent keeps screwing up and risking our bank accounts, our supply chains, our freedoms, and our national security.
Martin Fass (Rochester, NY)
All of them, these leaders of their countries, reveal they do not represent the people they supposedly serve, but are merely mediocre folks who lack intelligence, wit, or any of the other qualities required from our representatives if this world is to survive. The outlook seems fundamentally grim, awful. And I doubt ANY of these people give a damn.
JD Athey (Oregon)
The fact is, Trump has lost all respect of foreign leaders. He should not be surprised when they talk about his ego problems; but he's a hero and statesman in his own mind, and expects everyone to pretend along with him. Those who don't are punished.
DesertFlowerLV (Las Vegas, NV)
It's been dismaying to watch foreign leaders give trump cover and credibility by treating him with respect he doesn't deserve, so I'm heartened by this glimpse of reality.
Jiva (Denver)
Obviously Trudeau and Macron will get twitter lashings as soon as Trump is safely aboard Air force One, but has anybody noticed that Trump actually does change his behavior in the face of criticism? Example: there is now one less Trumpian press conference on the record because of Mr Trudeau's single-faced observation.
Diane (Modesto, CA)
I find myself wondering if Mr. Trump is really completely unaware of the contempt in which he is held, other heads of state recognizing that he is uninformed and largely incompetent. Not that they are perfect by any means, but they don't appear to go out of their way to criticize but rather have seemed to make efforts to find out how to deal with the vagaries of his administration.
Garry (Eugene)
@Diane I cannot wait for a real President who has intelligence, integrity and respect for the office of President.
John (Toronto)
My doctor once told me I could stand to lose some weight. I maybe didn't react well, and so she continued with a smile saying "Am I really telling you something you don't know?" Who is surprised that other world leaders have opinions about President Trump's behaviour? You have two congressional committees right now with plenty of opinions about President Trump's behaviour.
Mark Thomason (Clawson, MI)
Exactly who might Canada today send active forces against? Why would Canada do that? They are not just an American auxiliary. Canada like many others needs to maintain a long term potential to mobilize more force if the international situation turns ugly. The international situation is constantly turning and turning, and some of that can be really ugly. Military forces are like homeowner's insurance. You've got to have it, but you don't want to over insure either. Canada has some real reason to see its present force structure as adequate to its current needs and enough to enable emergency expansion. The US by contrast has far too much by that measure.
Alex (NY)
Thank You PM Justin Trudeau. Someone has to poke at the inflated balloon which is Trump's ego.
WeAreWeary (West Coast)
Look at the pictures, at Trump's body language. Weak, lost, WAY out of his league, and angry that his bullfeces, bullying and insults are no longer cowing other leaders, no longer working for him as in the past. The wheels are coming off the Trump wagon, and the only question to be asked is: Why did this take so long to happen?
Charna (Forest Hills)
It's not just Trudeau but also Macron, Johnson, Rutte that are visibly showing how they think of Trump. Even Princess Anne looks like she is chuckling. Remember when Trump said, "the whole world is laughing at us". That was before he was president. Now the whole world can see that these leaders are laughing at Trump. Yes, most of the world is laughing at Trump but unfortunately 60% of us in America are sickened by him.
Stephanie (Massachusetts)
He's not "two-faced" Mr. President, nobody likes you. It used to be that the Europeans and Canadians just assumed they were superior to Americans in general, because of health care and a dozen other tangible, measurable proofs of civility. Obama changed that and gained some respect for the U.S. Trump has affirmed the world's worst American stereotypes. There is nothing two-faced about it. With this guy as the face of our nation, we are universally despised, for good reason.
PK (San Diego)
Why is this even a news article with prominent placement? It’s pure gossip. It only provides Trump a platform to air his grievances and attempt to invoke sympathies from his supporters. Such articles serve as a distraction which is exactly Trump’s intent at a time he is facing an impeachment hearing in the house. Give him no ink or byte on the bone he is throwing at the press.
Donna (NYC)
@PK We all like it because it is one of the few times that Trump makes us laugh. The rest of the time we feel like weeping for the sorry state he has brought this country.
Michael Livingston’s (Cheltenham PA)
That's one of the most persuasive things Trump has said.
Nadia (Olympia WA)
trump's late arrival is text book narcissism. It's a way to have enormous power over a group without entering the room. He knew exactly what he was doing while feeding the press his droning word salad. The other dignitaries should have stuck to the schedule and started without him. He enjoys the respect for the office of POTUS without being called out for his hideous character flaws. A group of world leaders chuckling among themselves doesn't begin to address the real problem.
Maggie (Seattle)
@Nadia They should have taken the "family photo" without him today.....he showed up late for that keeping everyone waiting.
caseyjay (Canada)
Let’s settle this spat like men. Trudeau and Trump in a ring and the best man wins. Winner takes all of North America. Simple.
Frank Opolko (Canada)
As a Canadian I’m definitely for that! Finally my American friends can have free health care!
kalix1 (earth)
"Two-faced?" Trump has the vocabulary of a 12 year old at best. This is exhausting.
Richard (USA)
Is his other face as handsome as this one because that would just be unfair.
Kurt Pickard (Murfreesboro, TN)
Every member of NATO owes a debt of gratitude to the United States for not only the vast amount of treasure the American taxpayer has paid to defend them from Communism but the untold number American lives lost fighting for their freedom. The only thing keeping Putin from annexing the entire European continent are the defensive weapon systems the United States has stationed there, manned by 65 thousand American troops. Expecting NATO members to pay what they have agreed to and calling them out when they haven't, is not wrong. I get it that everyone hates Trump, but he is the leader of the free world and garners respect, even though he may not. The European leaders know better, Trudeau is just a twit.
Garry (Eugene)
@Kurt Pickard What do you call a leader who deliberately makes other world leaders wait while he holds a press impromptu press conference? And is it true, that Trump’s staff jaws dropped? He represents us! He acts like a petulant child.
Mercutio (Marin County, CA)
@Kurt Pickard "... [Trump] is the leader of the free world...." Baloney. The US may have the strongest military in the free world, but that only allows Trump to be the biggest bully on the block. True leaders exhibit intelligence, literacy, compassion, insight, morality, tolerance, restraint, and other admirable traits. Trump has not a shred of any of these. Bully, yes. Leader, absolutely not. Trump has forfeited America's claim to that role.
Elsa (Minneapolis, MN)
@Kurt Pickard I'm fairly certain Trump would happily hand Putin all of Eastern Europe, just so long as he got a cut. NATO members do have enormous respect for the USA, but Trump has shown quite clearly that he deserves nothing.
W.H. (California)
Such a disappointment, all of them. Not for their comments about Trump. For their disgraceful failure to do something, anything, about climate change.
Ben (San Antonio)
Trump's name calling of Trudeau is hypocritical. One day, Trump will call someone a fine person, etc., etc. Then when that person has to tell the truth about the evil within the confines of the White House, Trump suddenly does not even remember meeting him or her and would not recognize him or her if they were standing in front of him. Then, as if that is not good enough, he saying he has heard bad things about his former friends. Then the trash talking turns into personal knowledge. And it goes on. So Mr. Trump, before you call people two-faced, realize that you change stories so much we should call you Octagon, which is why you should be stopped.
Tony Francis (Vancouver Island B C)
The free ride that the free world has taken on the back of American tax payers is over.
Garry (Eugene)
@Tony Francis Do you think our military industrial complex complains? We have the most expensive military in the whole world. Their profits are “huge” and All at taxpayers expense.
Jeanette (Brooklyn, NY)
If Trump had only two faces, we all might be better off.
Bonnie (Mass.)
They should vent more in public. Why pretend Trump is normal or competent when there is so much evidence he is deeply impaired, unhinged, and destructive to our democracy and its longtime alliances ?
Canuckistani (Toronto)
Trudeau has gained points with Canadians.
Ed Suominen (Eastern Washington)
And with some disgusted Americans.
D (Illinois)
Ooooh! I was waiting for 'two-faced'! I think I just won this week's round of trump-tweet-insult bingo! thanks chumpie! glad you came up with a new phrase to talk about other world leaders!
Ted (Rural New York State)
"Mr. Trump has long bridled at the idea of other world leaders poking fun at the United States...his election would change how America was viewed abroad. “The world is laughing at us,” he said frequently during the campaign, criticizing the leadership of President Barack Obama." How prescient you were Mr. Trump. Not! They are laughing even harder.
woerth (brussels belgium)
Trudeau is a degenerated weak person.Trump is one of the strongest and most honest presidents America ever had. This is weakness against power. No comparison possible. In Europe there is much respect for President Trump, much more than in USA.Effect of "a sick press" in USA?
AnneEdinburgh (Scotland)
@woerth I can assure you that the vast majority of people in the UK ( much bigger country that Belgium ) loathe and detest trump. Only the Nigel Farage types find a kindred spirit. Obama on the other hand was widely liked and admired. And please...’degenerated’? Trump is a moral cesspit.
JB (Raleigh, NC)
That is just hilarious! thanks for the laugh
Garry (Eugene)
@woerth Putin heartily agrees.
Wang An Shih (Savannah)
‘Two-Faced’ - A serious case of the "pot calling the kettle black."
Nancy (Manhattan)
Trump sounds like an adolescent girl talking to her friends in the school yard. "Oh she's so two-faced!" Good heads of state don't go around attacking the heads of state of allies, publicly. That doesn't mean they approve of inconsiderate behavior. You can't expect Trudeau to close his eyes and ears and ignore good sense when off the record. Trump doesn't understand what it means to be a good head of state and he doesn't care because he really wants to be dictator. And after watching the impeachment hearings can anybody doubt that a large number of Republicans believe that their god-king Trump is above the law? Does anybody doubt that a large number of Republicans would be perfectly happy if Trump became dictator for life?
ShihTzuMum (Cork, Ireland)
Trump knows very well he is not liked, even despised. The rest of the G7 have nothing but contempt for him. He knows this so lashes out. He is nothing more than a bully. Why has he not taken shots at Macron, Johnson, Merkel, Erdogun and others?
Discerning (Planet Earth)
Trump is a national embarrassment for our great nation... The most unpresidential person ever to hold the office... The laughingstock of the world... And a clear and present danger to our cherished republic.
Stephen (Austin, Texas)
Sometimes we laugh at the absurdity of things around us. Trump's behaviour overseas has been, yet again, an abomination. I sometimes laugh to stop from crying when I consider what a disgrace he has done our country with his sophomoric temper tantrums and overall idiocy on display. Prime Minister Trudeau was reacting to the reality that Trump was late and, like me, might have been shocked by Trump's insane attacks on America and Americans on an international stage. Things have certainly reached the 'absurd' level here, but I'm not laughing anymore.
Zoe (California)
We hear Trudeau's explanation for being late due to DJs verbose 40-minute presser and it seems a matter of fact. The story is Twitler's response, 'Well, he's two-faced" is rich considering DJ harpoons everyone with whom he is about to meet face to face. As always DJ assigns his own behavior to someone else, anyone else, or to everyone else. It's his head trip. ITwitlers MO may have worked in prior meetings but all other heads of state are now ready for the head games. Good for them.
Hank (NY)
It's odd NYTimes is elevating this story. Maybe it would be better spent to revisit the article where Ukraine chose not to cooperate with the Mueller investigation because the US (trump) was withholding aid. That could use a bit more exposure. You could even keep the same headline.
Garry (Eugene)
@Hank Trump is a master at redirection.
Dissatisfied (St. Paul MN)
Wherever Trump appears in the world, let the sound of "hiss-hiss - ssssssssssssssssssss!" be heard.
W (Houston, TX)
Oh come on. That’s just locker room talk.
Sm77 (CA)
So we’ve Kardashianed our politics so much that newspapers like the NYT publish secretly filmed chats between world leaders. We’ve truly stooped to Trump’s level.
M (Pennsylvania)
"World Leader Caught Telling Truth!"
sloreader (CA)
It takes one to know one, just ask the people POTUS claims not to know when the occasion suits him.
Freak (Melbourne)
That’s what buffoonery usually leads to!
MB (Silver Spring, MD)
“Well, he’s two-faced,” Well that's the pot calling the kettle black.
Alan C Gregory (Mountain Home, Idaho)
T is akin to the 1960s schoolyard bully.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Like it or not Trump is the leader of the most influential country in the world. As such, the press find him most interesting and if they need to question him for a whole 40 minutes, (my god, a whole 40 minutes), then so be it. Go talk to the PM of Luxembourg for 4 minutes. Let's see what he has to say that's interesting.
Garry (Eugene)
@MikeinNYC I don’t. He embarrasses us.
novoad (USA)
This goes to show that the US and Trump are the center point of the meeting. They wouldn't bother to have this kind of talk about the Prime Minister of Iceland. Or about any of the ones speaking...
Vinnie Szabo (Victoria BC Canada)
@novoad I agree. It would be the same if Pee Wee Herman or Mr.Ed was president ( both would be a step up, by the way). Trudeau’s faux-pas would usually be forgotten more quickly but lives on for an additional 15 minutes because of DJT’S predictable brain dead response. People continue to be fascinated by train wrecks.
Michele K (Ottawa)
@novoad But definitely not in a good way. If you think Trump and his bullying improve your standing in the world, you are dead wrong.
Baboo (New York)
It is embarrassing to be the center point because the president is an embarrassment and is making the US a joke.....
nolongeradoc (London, UK)
Spending, NOT 'paying'. "He should be spending more than he's spending." Why does Mr Trump persistently misrepresent the way the NATO alliance works? No NATO member 'pays' to be in NATO and none - contrary to Trump's wild sometime claims - pays America for 'protection'.
R (Texas)
@nolongeradoc Interesting viewpoint. Then please identify the funding procedure for NATO. Some financial source has to be stationary in contribution. And, if America isn't a major source, who is? Final question, America is in the Western Hemisphere, what does it gain in remaining in NATO? These are not questions designed for confrontation. Would be interested in the European view of the present role of NATO.
Jenny (Germany)
Boris Johnson has said that he and the others were not laughing at/about Trump. Which means that they were.
Michele K (Ottawa)
@Jenny What a coward - why would he even bother to deny it? It's not like the whole world isn't justly laughing at Trump every single day.
LaPine (Pacific Northwest)
Me thinks Mr Trump doth project too much. We all know Trump is not respected by the other NATO leaders, nor the other G-7 leaders, nor anyone or any leader he "deals" with. We have a president who cannot be trusted to either tell the truth (evidence: over 14,000 lies since swearing oath) or to hold up his end of any bargain he makes ( casino workers, Trump Steaks, Trump Wines, Casinos, Trump University, IAS treaty, Paris Climate Agreement, and the recent ruling against his "charity").
Baboo (New York)
Not respected? You are being so polite!!!!
DED (USA)
All politicians are “two faced” and it would be an error to assign a higher degree of this characteristic to Trudeau. He is most certainly two-faced and this is the second time he’s proven it by being caught speaking “out of turn” in 90 days.
Michele K (Ottawa)
@DED If your President weren't such a malignant narcissist, it wouldn't be necessary. But it is, and the rest of the world is going to take advantage. Don't blame Trudeau for finding a way to handle your buffoon.
AnneEdinburgh (Scotland)
@DED as compared to the 90th time trump has been caught speaking out of turn in two days.
richard wiesner (oregon)
Certainly world leaders should aware that anything they say in an open format may be recorded. I would write some of this off to the same sort of nervous energy many would feel while waiting for that uncle you are not looking forward to sharing time with but you have to. You know you are headed into a meeting with an unpredictable, volatile, unscrupulous character and you just want to walk away unscathed but you know that's not going to happen.
Martha Plaine (Ottawa)
Who recorded this? And why don't prime ministers understand that no conversation can be considered private - especially in a public kind of place? Still, the so-called potus finding fault with anyone is rich. he is such a stable genius, after all.
Betty (NY)
Everyone at the event had a right to be irritated that he was late. He did that on purpose, so passive aggressive.
UH (NJ)
Trump shows once again how fragile he is. He has no problem tweeting insults at anyone not-Trump, but a little push-back and he acts like he needs his mommy.
wbj (ncal)
Who didn't love him.
LaPine (Pacific Northwest)
Me thinks Mr Trump doth project too much. We all know Trump is not respected by the other NATO leaders, nor the other G-7 leaders, nor anyone or any leader he "deals" with. We have a president who cannot be trusted to either tell the truth (evidence: over 14,000 lies since swearing oath) or to hold up his end of any bargain he makes ( casino workers, Trump Steaks, Trump Wines, Casinos, Trump University, IAS treaty, Paris Climate Agreement, and the recent ruling against his "charity").
smoores (somewhere, USA)
Really, what irks Trump most (by far) is that Trudeau is taller than he is.
Allison (Colorado)
@smoores: And that Trudeau got the better of him in their first handshake.
AnneEdinburgh (Scotland)
@smoores and that Melania and Ivanka make google eyes at Justin...
Michele K (Ottawa)
@smoores And smarter (but aren't they all?).
Luc Lapierre (Montréal)
two faced indeed... bilingual and bicultural.
Jazzie (Canada)
Latest update on this ‘tempest in a teapot’ - according to the UK’s ‘The Guardian’, Trump is cutting short his NATO trip, not staying for the duration. More typical ‘bully’ behaviour – if you can’t get your own way, you ‘take your ball and go home’. Trump continues to not surprise.
Pushkin (Canada)
This conversation between several world leaders is certainly not newsworthy-just mundane chatting about Trump's previous event. What is newsworthy is how the paranoid American president managed to perceive it as a personal insult. Trump is essentially unfit to represent any country because his psychological aberrations are usually out in the open for the whole world to see. His abnormal reactions to everyday happenings make him a dangerous presence on the world stage. History show us how wars have started on the whims of leaders where there were no real issues in play. The world can breath a sign of relief when this danger to world peace and danger to global economy is no longer the American president.
Viv (.)
@Pushkin It is a personal insult to every Canadian, and demonstrates a continued pattern of Trudeau's embarrassing behavior.
Peggy Rogers (PA)
The NATO leaders gathered Wednesday morning, made to wait for the prima dona president, should have proceeded with the group photo without Trump. The way he constantly and intentionally denigrates the group and individual members -- while facing front to the TV cameras and news media -- makes him only an impediment to achieving vital NATO policies, positions and peace. Let the big brat know that the world goes on without him and the photo absent him be a reminder. If the Times labels what Trudeau said without meaning to be heard a "gaffe," then what would it call the way the U.S. leader frequently, publicly ridicules all of them.
John Reynolds (NJ)
The whole world is laughing at Trump, except the one's his policies are killing.
Linda (Northern Virginia)
“You just watch his team’s jaws drop to the floor.” This is how everyone who deals with Trump really sees him. Anyone who says otherwise is gaslighting.
Diane (Cypress)
Coming from a man who tweets insults at every opportunity is in itself laughable. Donald Trump is an embarrassment to our country and to the people he is supposed to represent. An ambassador of American values and standards he is not.
Flyover Country (Akron, OH)
Can dish it out but can't take it...so elementary school playground. Teacher...teacher...Justin is talking about me behind my back.
PeterS (Western Canada)
For Trump to call anyone else two-faced is deeply ironic. He is nothing if not an inveterate liar himself. As for Trudeau, maybe he is just getting very tired of being Mr. Nice-Guy after the insults Trump has thrown at him, repeatedly (like after the last G7 meetings). So, I'm not confident there is a story here, other than to confirm that most of the other world leaders think Trump is a disgrace. In that, they differ little from a majority of Americans.
Michele K (Ottawa)
@PeterS And yet, the Canadian news sights are going crazy with those who hate him demanding that he step down as PM. The whole world knows what Trump is - except, apparently, for blinkered conservatives everywhere.
Vanessa (Toronto)
World leaders are just like us. We gossip, they gossip. The only issue is that they were caught on a hot mic. What was said by them was not surprising.
Paul Longhouse (Bay Roberts)
When Trump speaks, he assures us all that he is by no means worthy of the title "President", and is nothing but a narcissistic adolescent who craves praise and attention and uses disruption to create an aura of chaos to distract from his incompetence and complete lack of social graces. He is to be abhorred for misleading the public but pitied for the fool that he so obviously is.
Vinnie Szabo (Victoria BC Canada)
I imagine that like most world leaders the realpolitik of meeting with Trump is analogous to mother/ daughter Edwardian era sex ed. In Trudeau’s case “ This will be unpleasant dear, but just lay back, close your eyes, and think of Canada”
maria5553 (nyc)
As usual a bully can dish it out but he sure can't take it. Please, the world deserves praise for suffering trump's buffoonery for this long.
EJ Carroll (Canada)
NYT - To be clear: A premier is the elected leader of a province or territory in Canada, ie: Ontario Premier Doug Ford The Prime Minister is the elected leader of Canada, ie: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Also shortened and colloquially referred to as PM Trudeau. The terms are not interchangeable. A Prime Minister is not a premier. Just like the President is not a Senator or a Congresswoman at the same time. Thanks, A Canuck
gc (toronto)
As a Canadian, I've never supported Trudeau. So this is one of the only things he's done that I've enjoyed. Trump is a liar and a narcissist who defies description. The whole world would mock except that the consequences of his holding that office are so significant. Democrats, please get your act together and whittle the field down to 3-4 and then just back one, quickly. It really doesn't matter who...they will be better than him.
stewart (toronto)
@gc Just move from Alberta did ya alias Mr. Kenney?
N.B. (Cambridge, MA)
Just 2? He is multifaceted :-)
Patty Jan (Chester County, PA)
God save us from ever electing another president who has no sense of humor.
Joe (Washington DC)
People talk about other people who are not present. Not a story.
michjas (Phoenix)
Don’t be manipulated. You can elevate this to the heavens. Better to keep your feet on the ground. You know Trump. You know Trudeau. This is a Trump aside. It adds next to nothing. Not front page news.
Annon (Canada)
As an outsider looking into the U.S.,anyone can see that the reputation of the U.S. has sunk miserably in the eyes of the world (except for Russia) due to Donald Trump's corrupt behavior, bullying, lack of ethics, lack of morals, narcissism, questionable cognitive and mental abilities, and so on. Trudeau is not perfect, but I would take him any day over Trump, one of the globe's most corrupt and incompetent leaders.
Arthur (Texas)
I am sure they knew. Why should they try to appease someone who has no understanding of NATO or care about anything but himself?
