Never heard of "Barney's", lol. Nice to know there are still other places to shop in New York!!

Given the need for affordable, durable and protective clothing for impoverished people worldwide, why not backpedal on your recreational shopping? Volunteer, instead, at any number of organizations that take in, clean and ship unwanted garments to groups that distribute them to those who truly need them. Clean out your closet(s) and help someone else. After all, do you REALLY need that new pair of shoes/coat/suit/hat/handbag/accessory?

no one's talking about Barney's Co-Op which was the REAL loss in the retail landscape in my opinion

How about people shop so much? Anyone complaining about stuff like "global warming" or "inequality" shouldn't be shopping.

If you shop at Barney's on Atlantic Ave (I still can't believe that stupid thing is there), go down the block to Oriental Imports or across the street to Sahadi's to see how a family business should be run. The owners will wait on you with a smile. Greed need not rule. Buy something delicious to eat and enjoy it in the moment.

Busy stuff from Goodwill and donate the difference to those without medical care, housing or food.

You shouldn't shop at all. You don't need anything more. Give the money to your favorite charity.

@Jonathan Katz :Maybe you have a point, but there is no replacing the folksiness of retail clothing stores in New York in the 1960's when u could walk into Brooks Bros.,knew sales people many of whom were actors and actresses, Wayne the song and dance man, Drummond ex Navy man, Dorsey who ran the shoe department when u could buy a good pair of shoes--as a would be actor u were judged by ur shoes and if they looked good that meant to others that u were getting a lot of work, for around $35 dollars,Sutton who had an affected British accent but was "sympathique,"and after retirement looked after AIDS patients. I knew them all.1 day Rex Harrison came in and salesmen crowded around him and those whom he knew he favored, and those whom he ignored were jealous. Recall 1 Good Friday in 1964 when, let off work early at French Cult,Services, walked down Fifth Avenue and stopped in @Abercrombie &Fitch and salesgirl, Sandy de Clairville whose name I remember to this day sold me a beautiful blue blazer, a blue that I have never seen anywhere else.Impersonality, coldness of new stores are qualities not to my liking.

What?! No mention of Century 21?! You mean it doesn’t have enough snob appeal?! Admittedly, despite some very fine fashion, at ridiculously low prices, you need to be careful, as I once bought a 600 dollar leather jacket for 159 dollars, and within a month the zipper wouldn’t zip!!!

Where to go after Barney’s? London! It’s full on, high energy, and VAT refunds will cover your air fare. NYC retail is looking anemic in comparison.

Target.

I hate the word "hipster." Except when i look at these store displays and understand its usage in describing the customers

Barneys should have stayed in Chelsea, its Madison Avenue incarnation was really quite dull. Regardless, we all just need to consume a lot less stuff, the planet can't take it.

Barney's opened a Scottsdale location several years ago. It is now gone. I stopped in a few times but to be honest, I did not care for the atmosphere in the store. I have closets full of Armani etc. but as to where to purchase them, I do not equate quality and fashion with an aloof attitude that verges on snotty. It was back to Saks and Nordstrom for me.

Please consider buying your clothes used as a way of supporting a future for your world and the world of your kids. There is plenty of great/beautiful/quality stuff available that has been recycled. It is also fun shopping that way.
Junewell (NYC)
@Helen Lockwood Came here to say the same thing! I used to dread it when my clothes needed replacing. New clothes are overpriced, often poorly made, and guilt-inducing. Now that I shop only at used clothing stores, it's a lot more fun and affordable. Serendipity is a major element in what I end up wearing.

This was written for whom? There is nothing to buy in any of these stores in the first place. There hasn’t been any truly imaginative, innovative fashion store since 1990!
