All these homes are in MAGA, gun toting country. No thanks. RE is all about location, location, location.

All three of these homes seem hideous! Frankly, I'd rather be homeless than live in any one of them. Perhaps if the selling price were half of what it is...

@A Thinker That's funny. I thought they were all quite nice -- the houses, not the furnishings--and thought what a pity I don't want to live in any of those places!

@A Thinker Don't beat around the bush...and, if you can't say anything at all positive then why say anything like that in a public forum?

Jacksonville is very attractive but the huge kitchen needs some careful work. All in all, this week's selections are attractive and a pleasant relief.

Very nice homes. The NYT should feature more homes like these. For those of you living in NY or SF, these types of homes are available all over the country at this price. There is an alternative and you can still live in an area with good jobs and schools. There are even Democrats. Consider it. You will be welcomed.

@Lori The KY house would command upwards of $900k here in San Diego, a price I nor my friends could ever afford. This particular house appears really quaint and lovely and for a second, I imagined what it would be like to move to Louisville if it meant buying a place like this. But the summers in the south are tortuous. And though Louisville is a blue island in a sea of red Kentucky, the cons of living in a conservative southern state with regressive reproductive rights, are just too great.

I have seen better homes in the Treasure Coast that are more modern and cost between $75.00 to $100.00 less than the older one in Jacksonville selling for $349.000.
Michele Jacquin (Encinitas, ca)
@Tonjo Does 'modern' mean a stick box of 8 ft ceilings, skimpy mdf moulding, 1/2 uninsulated gypsum board walls, plastic formed doors, and laminate floors? I'd take a solidly built arts and crafts bungalow with updated mechanicals any day. To each his own.

@Michele Jacquin During the several hurricanes here in Florida, a friend of mine who happens to be very savvy in these things told me I had nothing to worry about since my eleven year house was built as strong as a fortress. He was right since we remained in it during the heavy rains and very strong winds with absolutely no damages.

in for construction!!

All three are completely livable -- although the kitchen in the1840s house is over-large, wandering as it does into the room lying beyond it. Jacksonville's is nicely done.
Mark (Texas)
Very nice and interesting homes. Thank you.

I have to say that these three houses have more charm and personality than 80% of the more expensive place in the RE section. What a pleasure.

The Louisville house is 1/2 mile from my own. I drive past it nearly every day. What is not mentioned is that it's on a pretty busy street - one of only 2 streets that goes north/south from the nearby main thoroughfare to the other main thoroughfare 2 miles up the road. The kitchen in this house has been give some "lipstick" but it needs a total redesign as that refrigerator next to the door/wall is so close the door may not fully open. I love looking at online real estate, but it often leaves out important information such as street traffic and true location. It's a very cute house and is well priced for the area, though.

@India, My 3 year old refigerator opens fully with no clearance needed between it and the wall it is basically up against. (I just did a visual check to be sure my memory was correct.) I remember having older fridges where that was not true. The one at your neighhbors is reportedly new. More generally I like the older cabinets and the fridge-stove-sink are in the classic kitchen triangle layout. Normally I prefer white appliances myself (easier to keep sort of clean) but the stainless steel is a nice counterpoint to the white cabinets.
JoanP (Chicago)
@India - My refrigerator is similarly situated, and there is no problem with the door fully opening.

@India Interesting! Living on a busy street could be a deal breaker. Thanks for the local, insider info.
