How Stalagmites Get Their Shapes

If any of the scientists want to study stalagmites just beginning to form, all they have to do is go spelunking in the NYC subway system, which is essentially a cave system. In most of our stations there are small (some not so small) stalactites dripping onto the platform below, forming little mounds. These mounds get stepped on by passengers but still they are persistent and evident. Maybe the scientists could analyze the mineral makeup of these subway formations (and likely confirm they're you know, 95% urine)?

Or, in 1970, as my natural science prof told us when explaining how to remember which is which: When the might goes up the tights come down. I've never forgotten.

Great article and wonderful photos. Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico has beautiful stalagmites and stalactites.

Cavers are notorious for keeping caves they find a secret amongst themselves. There could be no greater threat to these creatures of time and persistence than the invasion of tourist. I for one would much rather see pictures of these in vivid color and film than be there in person and cause the eventual demise of these wonderful objects. I was very impressed about the "science" behind them. Great article!
