Niners’ Dominance Is Creating Lore for a New Era

Better do a little more research on rookie contracts for top draft picks like Nick Bosa, how they're structured, and how they count against the salary cap. His salary is 495 thousand, but he got a 22.4 million signing bonus. That counts against the cap, but it's a bit of an accounting trick as it's averaged over the four years. His cap hit is just north of 6 million. Hey, it's your job . . .

I'm happy, happy, happy! I moved to Boston from SF during the end of the previous era of Niner dominance. I was bummed I never got to watch them on TV but then lo and behold Tom Brady cometh while the Niners fell down into a well. Then oddly enough, a several years ago the Patriots traded their great back-up QB Jimmy Garoppolo to SF. With all the viewing options now available, I'll be able to watch my Niners again!

One thing worth mentioning is that it is entertaining football: It's fun to watch the games. The last few years were very difficult to watch. The players are enthusiastic and the coaching is good.

The Ravens are the best team in football. Most NFL power rankings suggest the same thing.

@Dana Osgood Good thing you read the article and understood it before commenting ;)

@Tom Yes, I read the article. But winning in a sustained way in the NFL is difficult, if not impossible. It is far to soon to talk about the creation of "new lore" as the headline suggests. As constituted, this team hasn't even played in a single playoff game. Sorry to rain on the parade.

Last night's game proved to be as inspiring and thrilling for Niner fans as it was deflating and painful for Packer fans. Congrats San Francisco! You guys played a rock solid and fantastic game. Us Packer fans will be licking our wounds for the rest of the season . . . and then some.

Please, it’s a bit early to be crowning this 49er team along with the likes of Jerry Rice and Joe Montana. That requires winning numerous Super Bowls and dominating the division for years. Something this 49er team isn’t even close to having accomplished.

@Mike L I totally understand your comments but give them some time. This team has been constructed to be really good beyond 2019. To see if they're notable in the same context as the aforementioned remains to be seen. But enjoy the "show" as we can!

@Mike L I don't see any coronation going on in this article. It just explains how the Niners are building a winning team, from the Jimmy G. gamble to drafting and trading for a top-notch D line. It does feel a little like 1981 though - a few seasons of rebuilding with a new coach, miserable records, and then a breakout year. Time will tell though.

@Mike L Success like the 1981-1998 49ers is unlikely to be repeated in the salary cap era. Given what the Patriots have pulled off you can't call it impossible, but I'd happily settle for a few years of front office stability and quality football after the last couple of decades.

Perhaps the greatest gift locally is that the Niners are soaring in the same year the Warriors crashed to earth. Without the 49ers, the fall and winter of 2019 would be unbearable for Bay Area sports fans. Of course, the Warriors played that role for 49er fans the last four years.

Correction; 5 years

@Dennis blah blah blah just be glad you're not Detroit. the Giants had some moments, better than the Athletics. meanwhile the Tigers are the worst in MLB and haven't made the playoffs in years. the Wings are among the worst in the NHL and haven't made the playoffs in years. the Pistons are a mediocrity and haven't won a playoff series in years. the Lions are a mediocrity and have won exactly one playoff game since the NFL-AFL merger more than half a century ago. Easily the worst record in all of American professional sports. did I mention the weather in Detroit? happy turkey day

As much as I loved him, and as much as he gave to those great teams, Roger Craig is not yet in the NFL Hall of Fame.

They feel like the team that has a great reg season then gets bounced easily in their first playoff game. i dont see them going far
Dottie (San Francisco)
@Casey Defenses win championships, and the Niners have the best in the league. They will not fold easily. Also, if you've watched their games all season, they have an enormous amount of fight. They're the scrappiest team in the league, playing every second of every down with all they have.
Cal (Bay Area)
@Casey You're entitled to your opinion, but it's just reaching at this point. When fully healthy, they have no glaring weakness. They were even without one of their star DE's, Dee Ford, in the Green Bay game. I could see an inexperienced team that relies heavily on one aspect of the game being upset in the playoffs. But the Niners are not that. This season, they've won games solely with the run, solely with the pass, and solely with defense. And when it all clicks, you have games like the Green Bay rout. It's a strong team, and one of the most complete teams I've seen in a while. Not too many great defenses have a brilliant offensive mind as its head coach. Not too many good offenses have one of the best defenses in the league. The Niners have both, and the playoffs, both this year and beyond, will show us who they really are.
