After Keeping a Careful Distance From Trump, Nikki Haley Is All In

Bless her heart. In a very short time she has managed to ruin her chances of capturing Independent voters like me as she plots her next run. She sounds so desperate to get back in the game by flattering the Doofus. I am one who was very impressed with her in how she handled what happened in the black church. She showed real leadership. The exact of what is coming out of her mouth now!

There is little future in today’s Republican Party after distancing yourself from Trump. What a sad commentary on the Republican Party. What a sad commentary on our country.
cec (odenton)
Neither Trump nor Pence will be the R nominee. Haley understands this and is angling for the nomination. Crazy right? We shall see. BTW-- this puff piece on her by the times stands in contrast to the piece on Warren. How come?
Howard Beale II (Los Angeles aka “Shakey Town”)
In unabashedly lining up behind trump, Haley, like Pompeo, is making a cynical personal choice with her political future in mind NOT what’s best for OUR Country. No doubt she will be running for high office post trump. President? Plumping for VP? Haley’s a total Republican politician and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Her moral compass is faulty.

Thank god somebody is maintaining a good relationship with Mr. Putin and our commander in chief. Once the situation with Ukraine has stabalized we will need to turn to negotiations of the situation in eastern Europe. Russians are under much oppression in Estonia, Latvia and Belarus and their are many terrorists who want to kill Christians. Freedom!! and Jesus.

She was a respectable pol. from S. Carolina but apparently she has sold her soul to the devil going all in supporting the ego maniac demagogue Trump (and those are some of the nicer non criminal things I can say about him). Look for her to up the sale of her book and get a juicy million dollar job in corporate America for selling out her soul to the devil.

I am getting very tired of the demand for personal loyalty to the cult leader. They fawn over Trump like a Roman Emperor, trying to get close to power. By the way, Ambassador Haley was apparently using a private e-mail account for classified information. https://www.thedailybeast.com/nikki-haley-used-system-for-unclassified-material-to-send-confidential-information?ref=home Somehow, I don't expect Trump fans to start chanting "lock her up". They and the press only obsess over Democrats being accused of that.

I thought Nikki was a reasonable intelligent Republican . I thought as a woman of color , a daughter of immigrant parents from India, she would not be extreme right wing ideologue. I was stupid. She is behaving like a loyal pet of Trump. How she has become so shameless. She is expecting to be vice-president in next term. She is such a greedy.

It's clearly that Haley's ploy to get perhaps a VP nomination if Trump survives impeachment and wants her on his reelection ticket in 2020, OR, more likely, to position herself to become either the VP running mate of Mike Pence or even the nominee for president if Pence is out. PS: Based on today's (November 20) testimony by Sondland, it's clear that the walls are caving in on Trump. He obviously orchestrated everything and never thought he'd be questioned, much less impeached. The only people left to testify would be Bolton, Giuliani, and Mulvaney, and none of them are going to lie for Trump.
DennisMcG (Boston)
It's ironic and depressing that the least literate administration we have ever had, along with their parasitic hanger-ons, are apparently making a bundle selling.... books. As for Haley, she's a vile opportunist, just like the rest of this cabal.
Joe S. (California)
Another Republican dead-ender.
Steve J (California)
The old “he was nice to me” defense. So, apparently. Haley can’t see a world beyond her nose. Yet another opportunistic Republican with a gigantic moral blind spot trying to best position herself for future office.
CA (NY)
Should Trump run for a second term one wonders if Haley would replace Pence? Being a woman would be more beneficial for Trump? Yet at the end of the day Trump would still be on the ticket...and if and when Trump goes down it would be the end of Haley's career.
Ira Cohen (San Francisco)
Sad, though she criticized candidate Trump in 2016 albeit cautiously, she finally drank the proverbial Koolaid and went full throttle for him. Sad because she's not a fool and just allowed herself to become a total political animal. Yes, she'll make great strides for herself during the insane Trump era, but if Trump fails or is proven clearly to be the con man and crook that he is, she's cooked liked the Thanksgiving turkey. Good riddance, the GOP of the future needs to find new honest and rational people to give a rebirth to the tainted party.
Steve Fankuchen (Oakland, CA)
Haley knows precisely what she is doing: running for Vice President as a 2020 replacement for Pence, when Trump decides he needs to broaden the ticket's appeal.
Labienus (NY State)
The rest is just the "stuff" of current American politics-e.g.do they realize how little attention is being paid to the "impeachment" hearings? The point is that Haley has a great chance of becoming the first female US President-I don't think she'll settle for VP. This will pose a great dilemma for liberals and feminists (will they squirm?)-and as with Obama a good percentage will support her on principle-that we need to get this barrier broken-and on top of it she has a lot going for her, including her background.
Felix (New England)
"In a media blitz timed to the release of her new book, “With All Due Respect: Defending America With Grit and Grace,” Ms. Haley has consistently echoed White House talking points about how there is no case for impeachment and unequivocally defended Mr. Trump’s character." This all I needed to read in order to understand Nikki Haley. Anyone who still supports Trump and worse yet, lavishes him with undeserved praise is someone that should be avoided.
chele (ct)
They'll all go down together.
Wes (St. Paul, MN)
What alternative is there for Republican politicians than go whole hog on Trump? More importantly, what remains of the Republican base? The largest part of that base are religious conservatives who adamantly refuse full equality for LGBT people, and who tell a woman, even a young girl, that she must give birth to a baby resulting from a rape. Another leg of that three-legged base are the wealthy whose greed requires them to support Trump. And last but not least, the white nationalists who waved Confederate and Nazi flags at Trump’s earlier rallies. And that’s about it.
John (Atlanta)
Mark my word....she will be the republican nonimee for president after both trump and pence are eliminated due to activity in Ukraine.
bill (cupertino, ca)
Impeccable timing ...
caljn (los angeles)
What exactly is the evidence that distancing oneself from trump would be a bad career move?
Greg (Los Angeles)
Whatever Ambassador Haley’s future, whether she becomes another Fox feature or captures a political job, she has forever dishonored herself among people who honor the facts, the truth and honor itself. The most pitiable reality of the Trump Republicans is seeing intelligent, hardworking people, like Ms Haley willing to repudiate their education and experience in exchange for fame and fortune.
Keef In cucamonga (Claremont CA)
There’s no evidence she’s intelligent or hard working, but sure. She deserves to join Rudy, Pence and the rest of the gang on the island of broken GOP toys.
Jack Frederick (CA)
@Greg Dishonored herself? Perhaps, Greg, but in what way does that disqualify a person from todays gop?
CNL (Elmhurst Il)
There is little future for Republicans that align with Trump as well. Witness Kentucky, Louisiana, Virginia etc recent elections. Or 2018. There is little future for Republicans full stop.
P&L (Cap Ferrat)
She knows what she is doing.
Lawrence Siegel (Palm Springs, CA)
Sorry Nikki, can't have it both ways. Being the conservative pragmatic woman of color wasn't enough. Now she's cemented the Trump base voters, but, at the cost of capturing the independents that win elections. I'm unsure what possessed her to make this move, her political advisers lost their way on this one. I'm mystified why she went all in, she had the requisite book and promo tour going and could have been elusive during the interviews.
Liberal Lee (chicago)
After today's testimony by Ambassador Sondland, Nikki R. Haley is going far!! Gooooo Nikki!
Robin Underhill (Urbana, IL)
@Liberal Lee - a good dose of irony is refreshing right about now. To sharpen it — fellow South Carolinian Lindsey Graham has a brilliant future as a successor to the incomparable Mike Pompeo as the next Secretary of State under a Haley Presidency!
Liberal Lee (chicago)
@Robin Underhill Indubitably!
CathyK (Oregon)
I wonder how chummy she will be after Sondland testimony today
Betsy S (Upstate NY)
Nikki Haley is a shrewd politician. The way she is positioning herself vis a vis Trump is something to worry about. It tells us that she believes there will continue to be political advantage to being perceived as a Trump supporter even after he exits the political scene.
Robin Underhill (Urbana, IL)
@Betsy S - very cogent point. She is likely thinking that she will gain a large portion of Trump’s supporters, once they become politically homeless after a Trump exit (in whatever way). And she has a kind persona masking the cold calculating inner unprincipled politician, so many people who are Reagan or Bush Republicans will find her palatable enough to support.
Drspock (New York)
Nikki Haley is cut from the same right wing ideological cloth as Trump, but she is actually more dangerous because she is smarter than he is. She will stay close to the evangelical right wing of the party to curry favor while at the same time signaling to the corporate elite that under her administration they will get the same favored treatment that they have with Trump, only without all his personal negative baggage. Her move is also calculated as a win/win for her. She's loyal, but she's not him. If Trump wins a second term she could be chosen as his VP. If Trump's impeached or losses in 2020, she's in line as the Margaret Thatcher of the GOP. Haley is a hard right wing ideologue who supports neoliberal policies and massive military spending. She also favors US intervention in the Middle East. A Haley presidency would likely lead to a war.
Robin Underhill (Urbana, IL)
I’m saddened that Ms Haley has decided to squander the good will engendered by her principled act to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse grounds after the massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston by a white supremacist. She had previously supported the presence of the flag but reportedly had changed her mind due to a crisis of conscience. Now she has apparently changed her mind about Trump’s character after apparently having a crisis of apprehension about her own political future. I’ll never believe a word she says again until she repudiates this decision.
deb (inWA)
There is 'little future' for republicans who break from trump? Conservative think tanks can surely absorb another Federalist person like Ms. Haley. You'd think it would be enough of a future to live your life as a wealthy honest citizen, but I guess not.
jmilovich (Los Angeles County)
“We don’t trust Russia. We don’t trust Putin,” Ms. Haley said... Yet Donald Trump and the GOP continues to support a conspiracy theory created by Putin that Ukraine, not Russia, was involved in the 2016 elections. On its face, I would call that treason.
Mary Fischer (Syracuse)
Wonderful timing Nikki. Your instincts are perfect for the GOP.
Rick Morris (Montreal)
In the long run (if that even exists anymore in our hyper news cycle) it just makes no sense for Ms. Haley to pivot towards Trump. The political landscape still reads close to 60% of Americans do not support him. So why should she aim at Trump's base? The answer must lie in the short term. Despite what Kellyanne Conway says, Haley is indeed positioning herself for 2020. She may know something the rest of us don't - that perhaps Trump has promised her a place on the ticket as vice president, replacing Pence. Another opportunist is born.
Chaz (Austin)
“It is Trump’s party today and, more likely than not, it will be Trump’s party 10 years from now,” Think of the ramifications if this statement holds true. If the GOP maintains the presidency or one legislative chamber, inequality will get worse, at best healthcare will stay as is, there will be no progress on climate change, no improvement on the path to legal immigration, domestic terrorism will get worse. And these predictions come from someone that is fairly moderate.
Indulgent Nonsense (Indianapolis IN)
Have you ever noticed that Trump usually refers to women in his administration by their first names instead of by their titles? But I digress. Ambassador Haley seemed a principled and intelligent person. However I question the sense of an “all in” approach with Trump. It may be wishful thinking on my part, but eventually Trump will implode and take his loyalists with him. The smart move is an early egress from his orbit on good terms as Hope Hicks as done. The sycophants like Pence stay in at their own peril. They will either go down with DJT or be cast aside when Trump has no further use for them.
Tony (New York City)
Ms. Haley and the rest of the supportive Trump staff better just continue giving their overpaid speeches that they criticized Hillary Clinton for and write some books. As a Boeing board member of course she had no idea what Boeing was up to. Just like she had no idea how corrupt Trump is. She only cares about herself not America. Please dont even play the minority card either. No one wants to hear from her in anything, she did nothing at the UN and has taken no stand about anything. We remember when she spoke about healing after the people were murdered by a white racist in the church in her state. I never saw any healing. Get a job on Fox News and leave good normal Americans alone and fulfill your political ambition's in another country. We have had enough with highly do nothing ambitious politicians who care about their brand and not the country.
