What a coincidence. I can't imagine why this would happen under a president who called the white supremacists in Charlottesville "very fine people." Yeah, never saw this coming.
Patrick Donovan (Keaau HI)
When the President espouses and promotes hate, what else can we expect?
CPlayer (Whidbey Island)
The FBI having been founded in response to the excesses of the Ku Klux Klan, you would think hate crime would be its priority.
Mike (Arizona)
It would be interesting if the author would follow up with which states (and, perhaps, large cities) do not currently report these statistics to the FBI. Also, I find suspicious that Wyoming and Alabama (of all places!) reported NO incidents. Something smells fishy there.
Momo (Berkeley)
Not surprised. I have personally felt more hostility here, even in Berkeley, CA. For the first time in my life as an Asian living in US, I’m watching my moves.

Outside of America there is no such thing as an Anglo nor a Latino. Having an English or Spanish cultural and language heritage has nothing to do with color aka race or national origin or any combination of those factors. There is only one biological DNA genetic evolutionary fit human race species that began in Africa in 300, 000 years ago. What we call race aka color is an evolutionary fit human race pigmented response to varying levels of solar radiation at different altitudes and latitudes primarily related to producing Vitamin D and protecting genes from damaging mutations in ecologically isolated human populations over time and space. What we call race aka ethnicity aka national origin is an evil malign socioeconomic political educational demographic historical white supremacist nationalist right-wing myth meant to legally and morally justify humanity denying black African American enslavement and separate and unequal black African American Jim Crow. While race is a scientific fiction beyond being human, racism based upon that fiction is real. Despite my paper and genetic documented white European, black African, brown Native and yellow Asian heritage in America I am defined as all and only black African American. While I don't run from nor shun that white European American definition of who I am, when asked I proclaim my race as human and my national origin as Earth. See ' The Race Myth: Why We Pretend Race Exists in America' Joseph L. Graves

"...physical assaults against people were up, accounting for 61 percent of the 7,120 incidents classified as hate crimes by law enforcement officials nationwide." That comes to an average of about 12 assaults per day. In a country of 300 million. Hate crime should never be tolerated. But please understand the fear mongering that is at work with these types of articles
William (Massachusetts)
All motivated by the administration of President D. T.
rixax (Toronto)
Funny President but I wouldn't let my daughter vote for him.

Any violence of any nature is horrible and it is true we are seeing an influx of this negative, nasty behavior as of more recently. What about the violence we see now being perpetuated against the Jewish community? I believe that it more prevalent nowadays and deserves more media attention than the lackluster bogus 10 second bits I see on mainstream news channels. Every day I read about threats against Jewish men, women, and children as well as people being assaulted merely just walking home from synagogue. More light and more attention needs to be shed on this (which is also a direct result of the Trump era and the rise of white nationalism in the US and around the world) instead of a 5-10 second "highlight" in the the middle of woman dresses cat up for Halloween and other lame segments
MZ (NJ)
Why does this article not point out (in the interests of objectivity and context) that the number of agencies providing reports to the FBI increased significantly in 2016 and 2017, leading to an increase in the number of incidents that were incorporated into the 2017 and 2018 statistics. Given the increased number of reporting agencies, it would have been unusual if there was no increase in the actual number of incidents reported.
Susan Anderson (Boston)
@MZ Don't like the message? Attack the messenger. I can tell you directly that hate crime is on the rise. Kids in school, road rage, the violent feel more entitled and the racists think it's just fine to maim and kill. Military-grade killing machines are being stockpiled. Assertions are not facts.
Joshua (PA)
@Susan Anderson MZ is not attacking the messenger, he/she is mainly stating a point of fact: the number of hate crimes reported are affected by the increase in the number of reporting agencies. We need to have a fact-based discussion of the numbers if we truly want to understand what they mean. Otherwise, we are left with anecdotes, such as your own.
Shiv (New York)
@Susan “Anderson Assertions are not facts”. Correct. And your comment is nothing but assertion.
Justin (Seattle)
It becomes obvious that hate crimes are not a priority for the overwhelming majority of law enforcement agencies in the US. That being true, how can ethnic, sexual, and religious minorities expect fair treatment from law enforcement? Doesn't this erode the very foundation of the rule of law? "Law and order" indeed. Led by an administration that revels in demonizing and inciting violence against the vulnerable, what would anyone expect?
Dennis W (So. California)
This trend does not fall into the coincidence category. The divisive and hate filled rhetoric of the President empowers those who are inclined to commit violent acts. One only has to listen to his campaign 'rallies' to connect the signals sent to these trends.
Paul C. McGlasson (Athens, GA)
“Mexico sends us their rapists and murderers” says now President Donald Trump. “Build the Wall” say his white conservative evangelical supporters (despite the clear gospel mandate to welcome the stranger). And hate crimes against Latinos are up. If you mark a population for discrimination and hate with your WORDS, there will be people at all times who back up those words with DEEDS. Whether hateful speech is LEGALLY responsible for the increase in hate crimes is one question. Whether it is MORALLY responsible is in fact beyond question.
Citizen-of-the-World (Atlanta)
Fear begets hate and Trump feeds fear, so there you have it. And it matters not if you support Trump because of or despite his hateful fear mongering — you are a party to it. Trump likes everything golden but the rule.
db2 (Phila)
The pattern is Trump, Stephen Miller et al.
Tina Trent (Florida)
These statistics are merely numbers invented by the politicized activists in the DOJ and throughout the so-called hate crimes industry, a profitable racket.
Susan Anderson (Boston)
@Tina Trent Wow. Pure baloney. Others who find this nasty support for lies might like to look up the people who have the courage to fight back against hate. Here's one: https://www.lifeafterhate.org/ "It all starts with compassion"
Chris (DC)
Next time Trump holds a news conference, I wish some bold reporter would ask how he accounts for the increase in hate crime stats during his tenure. Predictably, Trump's answer will be a complete evasion if not utter nonsense, but the question alone will be enough to send a message that we, the public, have a pretty good idea about who's played a lead role in this.
Randy L. (Brussels, Belgium)
All of the compiled data and ONE advocate blaming it all on President Trump, so, it all seems to be Mr. Trump's fault. That opinion ruined an entire, statistical based, news report.
expat (Japan)
Federal funding for policing should be made contingent on collecting and providing accurate statistics on hate crimes. The 4500-odd crimes reported are more likely to be in the neighborhood of 45,000, if not even higher. Nothing tears at the cloth of society more fiercely than attacking a fellow citizen on the basis of his or her religion, ethnicity or gender.
2observe2b (VA)
Not unexpected when society concentrates on the differences between members instead of re-enforcing the elements of commonality.
BP (Alameda, CA)
Who still claims Trump hasn't accomplished anything yet? This article describes acts he has emboldened his supporters to commit. Mission accomplished.
expat (Japan)
@BP They are just getting started...
Adrian Elliott (Spring Valley, Wi)
Hate crimes are prevalent in large cities. Are these cities liberal or conservative? If fairly even, then it must not factor into it. If there is a pattern...
Wile_E (Sonoma County, CA)
Does anyone seriously doubt that there is a causal connection between a President who frequently and publicly displays his hatred of minorities and hate crimes committed against those minorities? Russian trolls need not answer.
kim (nyc)
White supremacists have taken residence in the halls of the White House. Why aren't we protesting this travesty every single day?
Martin Francis (Cleveland, Ohio)
Hate crimes have increased. Thank you media. It's not Trump, it wasn't Obama, it's the media.
Miss Anne Thrope (Utah)
@Martin Francis - Ta Da! Today's winner of the Kill the Messenger Award! Motto: "If we don't know about it, it ain't happenin'"!
susan (nyc)
@Martin Francis - And to quote John McEnroe - "You cannot be serious!!!!!!"
Scott (Illinois)
Meanwhile, Trump's Sunny Isle Beach properties are awash in Russians laundering money and enjoying "birth tourism", providing their offspring with U.S. Citizenship. The truculent, lockstep Trumpers would call those "anchor babies" if their skin were a different color.
Stephen (Oakland)
And the President is smiling in his bed that we the taxpayers pay for.
Florence (USA)
Shocker...not. The career professionals in the military and government branches (FBI. CIA, State Department) are losing their retirements and government pensions for a lifetime of service. For being truthful. When did being truthful become being a whistle blower?
Adrian Elliott (Spring Valley, Wi)
@Florence Being a whistler blower doesn't mean they are being untruthful, or truthful. I missed what it said about it in the article.
BlackJackJacques (Washington DC)
Trump owns this. He destroys everything he touches - this country, our reputation, the presidency, and although I thought it impossible because they reside in the gutter on a good day, politicians.
paul (St Louis)
I'm shocked. The President promotes racism, homophobia, misogyny and white nationalism -- and hate crimes increase. Who would've thunk it?
The Falcon (LI, NY)
paint me surprised...Not!
Keef In cucamonga (Claremont CA)
Things like this don’t happen in a vacuum.. Everyone should take a moment to read the newly released emails that WH advisor Stephen Miller sent to Breitbart in an effort to shape their coverage in the years before Trump’s election. Vile. Beyond appalling. Unadulterated racism and white nationalism. That he has a position in our government is a stain on all of us. Remove Stephen Miller at once.
NH (TX)
I wish the author had named the “entire states” that “failed to collect or report the data last year.” Reporting of hate crimes should be mandated by law. It is shameful that it is not.
Adrian Elliott (Spring Valley, Wi)
@NH How does one decide if it is a "hate crime" or an okay crime? There must be some kind of proof.
Sherry Bellamy (DC)
An “Ok crime”? What in the world does that mean? Do you honestly think crimes that target someone because of their color or ethnicity cannot be identified?
Miss Anne Thrope (Utah)
@Adrian Elliott - "How does one decide if it is a 'hate crime'…"? Don't know about you, but the FBI sez': "Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s Civil Rights program due to the devastating impact they have on families and communities… Traditionally, (they were) crimes in which the perpetrators acted based on a bias against the victim’s race, color, religion, or national origin. With the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, the Bureau became authorized to also investigate crimes committed against those based on biases of actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or gender."
N. Smith (New York City)
Who could possibly be surprised by this? Especially when you have a President who thrives on the kind of rhetoric and reaction that virtually guarantees this kind of behavior? What will it take to wake Americans up to the fact that this kind of hate-crime violence will never make America great again?
JG (Denver)
This doesn't come as a surprise to me. The dizzying increase in migrants from Mexico and South America is creating a lot of anxiety for the local populations. This goes without mentioning We have lost control of our borders and I can only imagine things getting worse and worse every year. I'm a naturalized US citizen and I plan to return back to Canada.
terry (ohio)
Undocumented immigration is a fraction of what it was in the early 2000's. Maybe you have a problem with brown people?
Miss Anne Thrope (Utah)
@JG - Righto - and the "dizzying increase in migrants from" Europe created "a lot of anxiety for the local populations" of Native Americans just a few hundred years ago - an eye-blink in time. Step back from your attachment to stasis. All things are in flow - brown to white then back to brown. Meh. Embrace inevitable change. Anyway, this is all just short-term drama since, in a hundred years or so, we'll have made Our Only Home unlivable for us and cockroaches will rule. Oh, BTW, enjoy your return to Canada. eh?
Adrian Elliott (Spring Valley, Wi)
@terry Somehow you think the only illegal aliens are "brown"? There are a lot of legal "brown" immigrants, and I don't see anyone complaining about them.
Chicago Guy (Chicago, Il)
And we all know who's responsible. And who, unfortunately, will never be held accountable for it.
LAM (New Jersey)
Anyone surprised? Pandora’s box has been opened.
