The stone meditation space at the highest point at the Joshua Tree house would be nice if the roof wasn’t caved in. A good night’s sleep is guaranteed on nights when the rats decide not to scratch at the walls from the inside

"Los Altos Hills is an affluent town where San Franciscans built summer estates in the mid-20th century." This sentence, basically gleaned from the town's website, is somewhat misleading. Having been raised in the community during the mid-20th century, I can certainly agree that while a handful of people built summer homes in the early -- not mid-20th century, the vast majority of the town, like most of the SF peninsula, is simply a result of post WWII suburban sprawl. Yes, it's a very lovely community, but it was never considered a summer retreat in the remotest sense like the Hamptons or some of the villages in the Hudson Valley.

the los altos is the best at face value: sq footage, design and land. joshua tree is a great location - a totally over-personalized, sloppy space and overpriced by $2 - 2.5mil venice is venice - decent house in a marginal neighborhood for the price on a small lot (damien hirst wallpaper - lol)

The Los Altos home will likely be a good starter home for one of the newly created Silicon Valley or San Francisco IPO millionaires about to be minted before the close of this calendar year. Could be it will go for cash. That’s not a jealous or bitter comment. It’s descriptive of one set of buyers in this new gold rich era in this locale. When a starter condo is $1.25 million, and a starter home is $1.5-$2 million, a $4.5 million home is considered normal and doable to that set.....
