As an illustrator myself I'd like to thank the NYT for this deep dive into the practice of illustration. The Times did a great job in describing how this illustrator thinks and works. No matter what the assignment, the work of an illustrator is preoccupied with communication and narrative. Jim Kay's process so beautifully reveals how his imagination is tied to observation; and how setting, character, medium, and style all coalesce in the service of story.

Lovely article. My son is 10 and loves Harry Potter and drawing. He has the first 3 of these illustrated editions and they are beautiful and amazing. It was great fun to read this article with him and help him learn about Kay’s process and challenges.

I saw this book at a small family owned bookshop in Evanston, IL a few weeks ago and just had to have it. I was mesmerized by the color, the detail, the story the illustrations themselves told. My husband said we could purchase the same book on Amazon for half the price. I just stopped and looked right into his amazing eyes and softly said, "yes I realize that. But I want THIS book NOW, from these wonderful people, NOW." And of course he gave the perfect and only right answer, "Yes dear. Whatever you want." Every evening, after all of my chores are completed, I lay in bed with my hearing challenged cat and together we peruse this beautiful piece of art while sipping a cup of hot coffee, laced with cognac. Thank you Jim Kay for sharing your artistic beauty and talent with the world through your illustrations. You rock my dear!!!

So British.

I sent this article to my grandson for inspiration and motivation. Not all artists, even with serious talent, feel able to find their niche in the world.

Thank you for using paper and pencils and paint and real materials instead of pixels and code to create art. Beautiful.

wonderful story, rare to get such insights into the work of an illustrator

My family had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Kay speak at the San Diego library. He was wonderful, funny and generous with his advice. The best of which was that drawing is a technical skill -- anyone can learn to draw -- what matters are your ideas. I have since repeated it to my kid when she's in a funk about some badly executed Harry Potter portrait. Thank you Mr. Kay!

I saw The Harry Potter illustration exhibit at the New York Historical Society and was absolutely floored by Jim Kay’s work. It was such a highlight of my year. The level of detail and imagination placed into the work is just incredible. Will you marry me Jim Kay? I will totally move to England, clean your paint brushes and watch you draw all day. So talented!

It is not common for an artist to accept his weakness. This is a refreshing article. JIm is a humble and inspiring individual. We need more humility in this world!
