The New Long Weekend

A pleasant historical document that is largely irrelevant to October 2021.

"savings and fewer crowds" -- if these are the two musts of a pleasant weekend, they are contradictory. To stay away from the crowds is never cheap, because the crowds swarm to the cheaper places. Either stay home or shell out.

Thanks for guidance

As a San Franciscan I’m mortified at these hotel choices. Like New York the city has become overpriced across the board largely out of the kind of sloppy piling on of greed that goes with boom times. I recommend a private room in an Airbnb with a *real* host who is also a local.

@ Mia San Francisco Over the years I came also to perceive prices of many hotels, knce affordable, to have become unaffordable, without any i provement of the services. I think that it is simply a result of clever marketing to those, whose incomes have risen faster than of others. A solution is in Psalm 37:3 KJV: "so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed".

In most places museums are closed on Mondays, something I have learned the hard way.

If your destination is particularly popular, and is within driving distance -- Labor Day travel to the Hamptons or to Cape Cod or, in my backyard, to Flagstaff -- the worst travel times are generally Friday evening and Monday afternoon. Whatever nights you stay, avoid peak travel times. And make sure you have your GPS, which sometimes finds obscure routes that save all kinds of time.

Many museums are closed Mondays, and horribly crowded on weekends. Not everyone visits multiple museums when they travel, but we do. We prefer midweek travel for short trips.

Airline schedules are very limited on Saturdays which would make travel dicey in the event of weather or delays with few fallback options. Like flying standby if you get on the first flight you’re golden but if issues arise your long weekend might turn into a short one faster than you can say Cinnabon.

Check the hotel because I have paid a higher rate in Laguna Beach for a Sunday night stay, driving back to the office on Monday morning. It was worth it!

"What is weekend?" -- There are 7 days in a week, and weekend is usually the two full days Nos. 7 and 1, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. No reason why weekend should not be longer or fall in the middle of a week, all depending on the economics.

It took me a few minutes to realize that the entire research content of this article consisted of tapping terms into search engines, plus sending and receiving a few emails... something the author presumably could have done while sitting on the couch in her pajamas. So much for my illusions about the flair of being a travel writer...
