I can understand why Trump would not be at the funeral. But he could have held his nose and had some of his speechwriters put something together and made a small speech in the Rose Garden, or even his helicopter as he speeds off for golf at one of his failing resorts. The Honorable Elijah Cummings WAS an icon for the liberals, the Democrats and leaders of Civil Rights. No matter which party, he was an honor to the elected bodies of our government. A few nice words, Donny? No? Let's all choose the cooperation and honorable paths in our lives that when we leave this earth, we may engender the level of love that was beaming from the church in Baltimore.
Michael Neal (Richmond, Virginia)
The funeral was a spellbinding, gut-wrenching, and inspiring tribute to a genuinely honorable, wise statesman. In this article, I would have included quotations from Mr. Kweisi Mfume's pitch-perfect eulogy.
EM (Tempe,AZ)
Congressman Cummings was a truly great American. Rest in peace and thank you sir.
Catherine (Chicago)
This was so moving to see a city turn out to praise their son. What a sharp contrast to the rallies of Mr. Trump where the hate and divisiveness seem to permeate the atmosphere. Make America Respect Again!
JayML (New Jersey)
We lost a true champion for and of the people. Elijah Cummings was the epitome of “to serve and protect”. His daughters are a beautiful reflection of him and I loved their heartfelt eulogies. And oh how I miss President Obama’s thoughtful eloquence, compassion and intelligence!
Leslie (Arlington Va)
Congressman Cummings stood as an example of how easy it is to navigate this world if you simply speak the truth. Unencumbered by an outsized ego but endowed with a innate sense of his own self worth, Elijah Cummings never suffered from the trappings of an oversized ego. We saw in Elijah Cummings a man who built his life on a foundation of honesty and unrelenting duty to the job he was tasked to do. Equipped with a strong moral compass, Chairman Cummings never yammered, his messages were always straight forward, unequivocal and steeped in common sense. He never resorted to self aggrandizement or pandered to the public for adulation. Perhaps it was because he knew his own self worth. He exemplified how easy it is to navigate through life without an outsized ego, blocking the view. He leaves big shoes to fill. I thank him for his service and join millions of others who extend our condolences to his family.
Chris (Virginia)
So much political decency in that service. Thoughtful people who understand life and the world, act with compassion, show strength through soft nuance, who speak eloquently and meaningfully. I mourned Cummings, and I mourned what has become of us with this mentally ill, morally defective president. He must be removed from us before decency becomes irretrievable.

If America wants to fix its tribalism it begins with a funeral. It doesn’t matter whether you are right or left democrat or republican, socialist or capitalist, black or white, a funeral seeks to honour a life well lived. A little more grace and generosity on both sides is needed. The republicans and the WH should have come or at the very least held a separate service to honour him. Elijah Cummings was an extraordinary man. He will be missed.
Peter (Valle de Angeles)
Beautiful coverage, thank you. His wife, daughters, and brother. Obama. The people of Baltimore. We are all a little better for just knowing of him.
Stephen Bright (North Avoca NSW Australia)
One presumes President Trump was somehow unable to attend?
Bonnie (Tacoma)
Thank you, gracious, good, strong sir.

Lying in state is a rare honor that has been awarded to very few Americans. In this case, sadly, the honor was bestowed on a racist man for (politically correct) racist reasons. Elijah Cummings graduated from a University that is exclusively for blacks (Howard University), was Chairman of a state legislative caucus that is exclusively for blacks (Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland), was Chairman of a federal legislative caucus that is exclusively for blacks (Congressional Black Caucus), and wrote a biweekly column for a newspaper that is exclusively for blacks (Baltimore Afro-American). Throughout his life, he has demonstrated his support for racist institutions and programs. We shouldn't be honoring a bigot and continuing the racist policies that the bigot promoted.
witm1991 (Chicago)
You are severely misinformed. Do you not know how Representative Cummings stood up for Mark Meadows when he was attacked as a racist? They were friends. Among the mourners at the funeral was Representative Mark Meadows.
Aunt Nancy Loves Reefer (Hillsborough, NJ)
God Bless Elijah Cummings and comfort his family and innumerable admirers, of which I am one. But Bill Clinton’s “hard-won moral stature”? Is that a joke?
Blackmamba (Il)
Yes but Freddie Gray died while the Baltimore Police Department profiled and stalked black men during Elijah Cummings elected political career. And crime and corruption swept the Baltimore streets and City office suites during the Cummings era. A bipartisan political feel good reputation passed no major meaningful legislation that changed how ordinary people lived in Baltimore during the Cummings era. I got family blood people in and around Baltimore city. See ' The Wire' for a veiled fictional depiction of what went wrong and is still going wrong in Baltimore in the era of Cummings.
hotGumption (Providence RI)
@Blackmamba Your comment has merit -- Cummings could not have turned a city around on his own. And he was a huge figure. But the best tributes reference all factors in a person's life.
Matthew (NJ)
Good to see our legitimate president speak. Good to see 2 other legitimate presidents remind us of the aspiration of the office and the nation. We once had that intact.
RichardM (PHOENIX)
He was a very brave person and it is inspiring how he fought for his community. Hoping memory of his service and courage inspires others. When I saw the headline, I gasped thinking is it possible that the current potus had the decency and courage to attend??
sh (San diego)
Cummings was clearly a very smart and important guy, but what is this partisan funeral about - it is disturbing
Odehyah Gough-Israel (Brooklyn)
Lovely service and well attended by many Congressional people. I like that the Bishop insured that his parishioners were included and that the church wasn't overrun with dignitaries. I don't agree that Rep. Cummings' brother refused to shake Mitch McConnell's hand. I don't care for McConnell but if you shake hands with everyone else, shake McConnell's hand too. I don't think Rep. Cummings would have approved of his brother doing that.
Ted (NY)
Rep Cummings untimely death is sad and unfortunate in so many ways. As Chairman of his committee there’s no telling what else he could have accomplished as the country tries to regain it footing and save our democracy. His loss leaves a tragic gap in the country. Maya Cummings eulogy was touching as was President Obama’s and Speaker Pelosi. As the committee searches for a new leader, hopefully it will be someone who shares Rep. Cummings understanding of American workers’ needs. Californian Rep. Jackie Spier is not it!
Hope (Pittsburgh, PA)
I'm so grateful for Mr. Cummings presence in our country and government. Condolences to his family and friends. Thank you Representative Cummings, for your excellent example and leadership. May you rest in peace.
J T (New Jersey)
"In 2019," Representative Elijah Cummings did "all [he] could do to keep our democracy intact," and he did it with the passion and vigor our moment calls for, and a dignity and gravitas unique to him, never stooping to the level of those who assailed him. "Come on, now, we're better than that!" he would exclaim. A nation grateful to have his singular voice ring out on these issues from the halls of power must now raise our own and speak in harmony against the enemies of our United States, foreign and domestic. It is now up to us to live up to his expectations of the nonviolent fight we need to rise to in this moment and maintain in the coming years, and not let his voice and his passion and his faith—and our great country—fall in apathetic silence. God blessed us with Elijah Cummings and other great men and women for showing us the way. That way is now ours. His fight is now ours. This country, to stay ours, to become more ours than its ever been, needs us all to unite in the coming year. Because we're better than this.
Jan (Omaha)
I come far away from where the Honorable Elijah Cummings has come, and I did not know him. The first time that I heard his voice (on TV), I became calmed, hopeful. Peaceful. His strength and dedication to our country allowed me to believe that we can protect our democracy, we can learn to respect one another, we can live together. Thank you, the Honorable Elijah Cummings, for your service. I believe that your service will call many of us to stand up and make our world much better.
TheraP (Midwest)
I wish the Times had linked to copies of the eulogies. I’m in London right now and would so have enjoyed reading them. As an aside, while a tragedy to have lost this man at such an important political moment, how beneficent for the nation to be reminded at this very moment of the grandeur of public service by so many beloved other fine public servants.
C.L. (Oxnard, CA)
@TheraP - Here is link to whole funeral service on Youtube. (3 hrs 40 min.) Just finished watching it. Very moving tribute to the Honorable Elijah Cummings. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IsmS8BB5ZJg
Voter (Australia)
Americans say "my nation right or wrong". The epithet implies that patriotism, nationalism and allegiance to nation are assumed. On this point there can be no argument. I am an Australian citizen are my loyalties are obvious. By virtue as a citizen I have right to morally evaluate the choices made by my government. I can in simple terms judge whether my government acts according to ethics and law. This is a position of a citizen of any democratic nation. The legal and ethical and probity of our elected officials is assumed. Integrity. Objective policy choices congruent with law, facts, reason and ethics and compassion were seen in Australia when Mr Cummings spoke. He was loud and grumpy. Mr Obama stated that being an honorable man precedes honorifics of public office. Sad loss but his integrity is eternal. I vote and I count rather than be counted.
Leigh (Qc)
Representative Cummings, by the extraordinary effort he made to be of service to others throughout his life, fully merited the beautiful manner in which he took his leave - entirely unbowed, widely admired and even revered, still powerfully inclined to marvel in the glories of this earthly plain, and properly contented with his invaluable contribution to the advancement of his fellow man.
Elaine O'Brien (Kodiak, Alaska)
Where was Donald Trump? Was he "uninvited" to Mr. Cumming's funeral a la John McCain? It has surprised me that there has been no mention of Trump's no show at commemoration of Elijah Cummings.
nell ryan (Washington)
@Elaine O'Brien Trump viciously attacked Representative Cummings very recently. Undoubtedly, Trump's horrific accusations and cruel personal insults contributed to the Congressman's already deteriorating health. Emotional pain translates into physical pain as well. Maya Cummings made it very clear that her husband was deeply affected by the verbal assault on himself and his beloved city, and it caused him severe pain. If Trump had attended the funeral, his crude self-aggrandizing presence would have been too toxic for genuinely grieving people to have to endure.
Susan (Detroit)
Dear Dear Baltimore, You are the America I love, you are America to me. We all mourn your loss..this giant of a man
Bananas (WI)
Elijah Cummings. Such a huge figure. His death is as big as his life. That is how it goes. Best wishes, Mr. Cummings! Your power will be missed.
Mark (New York, NY)
I think Trump's remarks about Baltimore being a " disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" were some of his most offensive remarks in a slew of disgusting slurs since he took office. Elijiah Cuming's funeral was a shining example of how wrong he was.
Colleen Adl (Toronto)
These tributes remind us of what leadership is really about. But can't help but luv the shade thrown.
JM (East Coast)
I have been familiar with the Honorable Representative Cummings for most of my adult life since he became the congressman for my hone district in 1996. He was a highly respected leader for our local district, state and the nation. I taught at a high school near Baltimore for a few years and will always remember his support of education initiatives, his bipartisan work, as well as his calm proactiveness in the city in 2015. His service to our nation is admirable and serves as a role model for all of us in public service. President Obama said it best: he was always honorable and served as a beacon of light in our Nation's Capitol. Thank you sir and may you rest in peace.
NYexpat-GT (FL)
I have never been a soldier, never in battle, but right now I feel what I imagine a soldier feels when his captain is killed in the fray. Shock, and grief, but also a sense of disorientation that comes with the sudden loss of leadership. Representative Cummings was not my Representative, but he was my representative, my captain, in the historic struggle for rule of law and democracy that is taking place in our politics. I imagine I feel what a soldier would feel now, which is to continue to follow the captain's lead, fearlessly, until honor, decency, truth, and justice prevail.
Robert Nickelson (Payson, Utah)
I too feel The comment “I now feel like loosing Elijah Cummings is like losing a great leader in a war or battle is truth”. I am glad he has so many friends from both sides of the isle and all walks of life. He was a good man who worked tirelessly to happy make this World a better place for all. Thank you all who helped making his passing a time to celebrate his life and causes. Rest In Peace.
Lynn Russell (Los Angeles, Ca.)
Congressman Elijah Cummings was that rare beacon of nobility amongst us. Anyone would do well to emulate his qualities.
David Parsons (San Francisco)
Bless is heart, soul, and spirit - nefesh, ruach and neshemah.
Tulipano (Attleboro, MA)
Trump should have been there.
hotGumption (Providence RI)
It was not possible for me to watch this -- the sorrow and despair at losing another person of stature would have been too great.
wak (MD)
There are great Americans, and Elijah Cummings was one of them. His time came and we are at a loss now by his death ... except to be still inspired from the memory we have of him and the justice and wholesomeness he stood for. “Servant, well done,” as rightful acknowledgement to say of him ... a man, a real one, for the people. And there are still others with us in the same mold. In particular, President Obama who reminds us still every time he speaks, what decency and patriotic leadership and appropriate cheerfulness look like.
Mixilplix (Alabama)
The last of dignity
Areader (Huntsville)
I really miss President Obama's speeches. He really knows what life is all about.
Charlton (Price)
Splendid reporting and beautifully written. A verifiable first draft of history. Thank you for this coverage. NY Times. It will stand in our national memory with the coverage of the final ceremonies for FDR and JFK. And for the powerful spirit of Toni Morrison now also in our heritage.
Roberta (Winter)
I had the privilege of attending the Mount Olive Baptist Church in east Austin for a year and listening to Senator Cummings eulogy today was just like being in church again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Charles Kaufmann (Portland, ME)
And in turning down an empty glass for Elijah Cummings Hillary Clinton sounded solidly presidential. Alas, that glass is twice turned.
Eric (Seattle)
You can feel the calm in that church, the peace of the man.
Juan (Columbus)
I still can't believe he is no longer with us. We have lost a true Champion of America. He might be gone physically, but his courage, honesty, integrity and service to this country will continue to inspire many, including yours truly. His family is in my thoughts and prayers. R.I.P. Chairman Cummings.
unreceivedogma (Newburgh)
A tremendous loss that will be missed at this particular time. Who has he inspired to step into his shoes? We need him or her, now.
GraceNeeded (Albany, NY)
My husband and I watched on television the whole service and we were so blessed to see such a wonderful send off to a giant of a man, who embodied his faith by working for social justice and treating others as anyone would desire to be treated. The world is a better place because Elijah Cummings journeyed here. He inspired a nation by his humble, kind response of a true public servant when attacked by our president, as he abuses the power of his office to bully, demean and threaten anyone who disagrees with him. Congress folk should wake up to see clearly the example of Cummings and emulate him over supporting the likes of DJT. America needs heroes especially right now and we were blessed to have one in Mr. Cummings. May we honor his memory by being ‘better than this’. I love thinking of him ‘dancing with the angels’ and thank God for gifting him to us.
No (SF)
Interesting that the sudden and unexplained cause of death of this towering presence has been suppressed.
Robert (Out west)
The dilemma this sort of insanity raises is this: when is it appropriate to note, on the occasion of a good man’s funeral, that some of all y’all are crazy?
JM (East Coast)
@No Representative Cummings had terminal cancer. I don't think there is any conspiracy, just sadness all around.
sg (fair lawn)
The contrasts between President Obama and President Trump could not be more stark. One is an American hero, the other an American zero.
Martin (Chicago)
It's a true sign of the times that the sitting US President was not the prominent speaker, or expected speaker at Cummings or McCain's funeral. How can anyone think this is OK or normal?
Thanna (Richmond, CA)
It’s not normal. We are under Russian occupation.
Itsnotaboutme (Maine)
Every time I see DT presenting someone with an award or honor, I feel so pained on behalf of the recipient. What a gift that the antithesis to Rep. Cummings life was not present at his honoring.
J T (New Jersey)
@Itsnotaboutme There is no honor DT possesses or can bestow. The only honorable thing he could ever hope to do would be to resign from office, apologize to all he wronged, and never be heard from again.
Rose (Washington, DC)
I am so thankful I was able to view (from work) via livestream. It was a joyous celebration of his life. His wife truly honored him and it was refreshing to see Presidents Obama and Clinton as the true statesman they are. Continued prayers to his family.
Common Sense (Brooklyn, NY)
@Rose That you seemingly used work time to watch Rep Cummings funeral was an appalling admission. If seeing the funeral service was that important to you, you should have taken off from work. Unfortunately, this is the cavalier type of attitude towards work and ethics that the Democrats tolerate, which is more subtle yet just as pernicious as Trump's brazenness. And this is why there are so many Americans who are very wary of the progressive and socialist direction the Democrats are going in.
NKM (MD)
Baltimore, Maryland and America will miss you Elijah Cummings. R.I.P.
RCT (NYC)
I watched the funeral and listened to the Cummings family and Barack Obama and wanted to cry. Like Elijah Cummings himself, in a time of darkness, they offer love, integrity and hope.
Richard Waugaman, M.D. (Chevy Chase MD)
Initially, I misread the headline and thought the President was there. What a relief that he wasn't, knowing he would have taken the microphone and praised only himself, the only person who truly seems to exist in his disordered mind.
Woosa09 (Glendale AZ. USA)
Refreshing to witness such eloquent speakers at Mr. Elijah Eugene Cummings services. Rest In Everlasting Peace, Sir.
RS (Washington, DC)
Not many people share (or even understand) the incredible trajectory that Elijah Cummings made of his life—sharecropper son to statesman. What a journey!! Fielding the water hoses and police clubs to being a prominent voice in deciding legislation and enacting laws. And finally at the pinnacle of statesmanship, as Chairman of the main investigative committee in the House, lecturing a Trump appointed functionary in Homeland Security at the end of a long day’s testimony on the treatment and caging of asylum seekers at the border—“…man, we’re better than that!!” Wow!!
Bruce1253 (San Diego)
Some societies celebrate their heroes like this. Yet there are times when someone breaks all the rules and needs to be shown that this is not acceptable. Trump would call those people names and advocate violence for them. The Quakers have a practice for such occasions that conveys deep displeasure without violence, indeed without a word spoken. It is called Shunning. When a Shunned person walks into a room the people stand and turn their backs to him/her without a word spoken. They may leave the room. Where ever that person is encountered the people will turn their backs on him; they will not engage that person in any manner. It is my recommendation that Donald Trump be Shunned.
Julie Tea (vancouver)
Amazing moving service for someone who gave of himself unstintingly.
Rosiepi (SC)
I listened to the eulogies for this great man, and the words that touched my heart were from President Clinton: that when we are discouraged we should remember the words, the voice of Elijah Cummings. I recall him speaking to Michael Cohen like a Father would really, that he knew he was discouraged, worried for his family, and his future but to look on this tribulation as part of his destiny towards making the world better, and a 'better Michael Cohen'. How easy it would have been to lambast Cohen for his foolishness, his blind faith, and his lack of his judgement. Instead he thanked him for doing the right thing, he offered hope and kindness, letting him exit believing he would get past this, that Elijah Cummings had faith in his future. Now that's an honourable man!
This just in (New York)
At his end, the only thing Congressman Cummings could have asked for was more years on earth. He had everything else anyone needs. I wish for myself to be as well thought of by my deeds.
Elizabeth Bennett (Arizona)
Feel blessed to have heard both President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, and especially Pres. Obama speak so lovingly and respectfully of Elizah Cummings. In this difficult time for our country he will be terribly missed.
R. Anderson (South Carolina)
I can remember Cummings defending extremely conservative western North Carolina republican congressman Mark Meadows from unfair criticism recently and describing Meadows as his friend. But I don't recall Meadows delivering any kind of eulogy at Cummings funeral. What I did notice was the extremely right wing republican Jim Jordan from the 4th district in Ohio smirking and chewing gum.
micky (nc)
Meadows delivered a very moving eulogy yesterday at the Capitol. he was very emotional and it felt like he was being sincere
HL (buffalo, ny)
Meadows gave a moving eulogy the previous day, where Elijah Cummings was laid in state. It was actually very moving; Meadows became emotional and choked up. You should look for it online.
greg (upstate new york)
It is interesting that with the exception of John McCain there has been a dearth of Republican figures who the nation honored in their passing . Perhaps they are vampires and never actually die?
Linda (OK)
I miss President Obama every day, but watching him honor Congressman Cummings made me miss him even more.
hotGumption (Providence RI)
@Linda Me too. A thousand times over. Every day has a sickening undertone that is attributable to the disaster in the WH.
PJ Atlas (Chicago, Illinois)
In a surreal moment, only Fox News was broadcasting live on the four televisions at my health club. ABC, CBS and NBC stayed with their regularly schedule programming.
stuckincali (l.a.)
@PJ Atlas CSPAN carried it.
Bosox rule (Canada)
I watched Trump rant about his "perfect call" and "no pressure" in one of his daily helicopter rants, before he went to a historically black college to tell them he has done the most for African Americans than any president in history. I then watched a pure classy eulogy by President Obama and the contrast was amazing. Oh how Obama is missed!
EL McKenna (Jackson Heights, NY)
Today's service was a heartfelt event and as a viewer, I cried buckets as one after another of his family, friends and colleagues said goodbye. What an emotional abundance of speech! It was a stellar send off to one of our finest. Baltimore, we hope you are growing more women and men like him from the seeds he has sown in your wonderful city. God bless!
Never Trumper I (New Jersey)
Why no quote from bill Clinton, who warned that our freedom is endangered when we hate those with whom we disagree. So timely.
WJBrock (NYS)
Please tell me there was at least one Republican there to show respect.
Drusilla Hawke (Kennesaw, Georgia)
@WJBrock Speaker Pelosi recognized some House Republicans and asked them to stand.
Matthew (NJ)
@WJBrock There were several. It was pointed out many times that Cummings had many friendships with republicans.
John Smith (Ottawa, Canada)
@WJBrock Mark Meadows did give a eulogy yesterday. It was heartfelt.
GryphonGal (Atlanta)
Hon. Representative Cummings I miss you already. Thank you and Godspeed.
Carl OConnor (Sun Prairie, WI)
I never had the opportunity to personally meet the Honorable Elijah Cummings, but his actions always told who he was...a man of decency and integrity. His leadership was an example that all citizens of the United States of America should seek in their elected officials. In fact, we should demand these characteristics, and vote out those that fail this test. Obviously Congressman Cummings district experienced these admirable traits and re-elected him 11 times. We all will miss him... and May He Rest In Peace!
Robert (Out west)
Every so often, we are reminded why members of Congress are addressed as “the Honorable.”
Truthiness (New York)
A great and good man.
Cheriekiss (Paris, France cherrychapman.com)
I was moved to tears by the powerful message of dignity, hope and integrity embodied by Elijah Cummings recounted by his pastor. I pray that his immense legacy of truth, justice and kindness continue to live and be a model for our elected officials to emulate. May Republican politicians who have abdicated upholding truth over political aspirations by protecting a sociopathic president be shamed!
Barbara (Los Angeles)
I watched the entire magnificent service - and can only wish that entire nation had the same humility and love as this amazing congregation and community. I also wish that the White House and the divisive Republicans could “see the light”. The accolades from the Congressman’s staff, House members, family and friends was an inspiration to all. For those who question the African American vote - listen to the applause for Speaker Pelosi and Barak Obama. The only swamp in Washington is the one created by the lobbyists and special interest groups. A great man of the people was lost this week.
PeaceForAll (Boston)
I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Representative Elijah Cummings and to President Obama for reminding me what grace, courage, integrity, and character looks like. Despite the dark clouds covering this nation right now, these two men reminded me that the light of the sun hasn't been extinguished. It's still there beyond the clouds. Light always penetrates darkness. That most of us are drawn to the light of these two men restored my hope and faith in humanity. I have faith that the baton of progress that these two men carried will not be dropped and kicked aside because of a death or the end of a presidency. We've traveled too far as a nation to stop and give up. In hearing your eulogy, Representative Cummings, you reminded me of the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Thank you, and rest in peace, my friend. We shall overcome.
Mary (Alabama)
The passing of the Honorable Elijah Cummings is too soon. He is of blessed memory. May his family and friends and constituents be comforted by emulating him.
Richard Rosenthal (New York)
Who made the decision and on what basis was it made to have Sen. Warren and not other candidates for president speak? It certainly would seen to give her an advantage in her pursuit of black votes. I ask this strictly as a matter of fairness as I have enormous regard for her.
EM (Tempe,AZ)
@Richard Rosenthal The minister said Congressman Cummings had specifically planned his own memorial service and requested those who participated. He did not plan for the memorial service in Congress. His widow said she made that decision.
Christina (West Chester, PA)
Rest In Peace, sir. You served your city and your nation well.
Heysus (Mt. Vernon)
An Honourable man who will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace dear friend.
GM (Universe)
How our county and world long for the return of of honor, elegance, grace and decency from our top leaders. Elijah Cummings life and how he passed -- fighting for what is right up to his very last breath -- and President Obama's beautiful and stirring eulogy of him gave me hope that the forces of good will eventually win the day.
JT FLORIDA (Venice, FL)
Today we saw America at its best. The service for Elijah Cummings reflected everything good about our country in recognizing true civic discourse. The only person missing was the President of the United States even though two former Presidents filled in remarkably well.
Angela (Zimm)
@JT FLORIDA The president of the United States was not missed. Trump never has anything of worth or inspiration to say. His presence on this earth and his words are foul.
Gerry O'Brien (Ottawa, Canada)
In a related article on the moving tribute to Representative Elijah Cummings at which many, including President Obama spoke, it was noted that “Last summer, Mr. Trump lashed out at Mr. Cummings, calling him “racist” and “a brutal bully” who had done “a very poor job” representing a district that he described as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” It should be made aware to the Bully in Chief that whenever he points his finger of accusation and abuse at someone, he has three other fingers pointing back directly at him. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/25/us/politics/obama-cummings-trump.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage
WCS (NYC)
I would prefer only to extol the virtues of the Honorable Elijah Cummings - a man of integrity, a passionate defender of civil rights and equality, the long-time conscience of the U.S. House of Representatives, and a friend and mentor to so many. I admired him tremendously. I regret, therefore, that I feel compelled to veer off topic for a moment. You write: "Two former presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, were among the prominent cast of politicians, mentees and relatives who spoke at his funeral on Friday morning. Others included Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator and presidential candidate." Have you suddenly forgotten that Hillary Clinton formerly held the offices of U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from N.Y.? The NYT's failure to include one or more of her titles (as you do for all other former government officials) is disrespectful. It devalues her historical importance and the weight of her words - the very words Representative Cummings clearly wanted our citizens to hear during these troubled times. Editing the sentence to include Secretary Clinton's titles is easy. I urge your copywriters to do so.
Bob (SD)
Leaders like McConnell believe their actions, words and behaviors are "just politics." They're not. They are an accurate - albeit not complete - reflection of the individual. The above, from another commenter is exactly how we start to find our way again -- by holding accountable those who are only about politics and then try and be someone else outside are the worst of 'the swamp' and we need to hold our leaders accountable for integrity and their actions (as always) say more than their words.... we have done and can do better!
Sue Salvesen (New Jersey)
This article brought tears to my eyes. Mr. Cummings was truly an honorable human being. We are all better off for having him as a representative in Congress. Rest in peace.
H. Clark (Long Island, NY)
This was the America I knew and now miss so much. Passionate, articulate people exalting a lost hero with eloquence and fervor. The eulogies delivered to Elija Cummings should be printed and sent to public schools to remind students what America once was, and how good people once presided over a sound Democracy. Rep. Cummings’ last gift to us was to bring all these good people together to teach a vital lesson in morality, decency and American values. This was a stirring ceremony, and a stark reminder of were we were, where we are, and, perhaps, what lies ahead.
Mr. Bantree (USA)
Having just viewed the service for Mr. Cummings, whom I knew of but not about, I felt his passing more deeply by understanding more about him today. Listening to former president Obama speak on behalf of Mr.Cummings felt like a healing salve to me, in contrast to the stark and dark behavior we are now accustomed to. Imagine a president with intelligence, compassion, knowledge and a genuine desire to lift people up rather then destroy the substance of what actually made America great. It will come again. We will always have disagreements but some decency must be restored as a start.
Dolly Patterson (Silicon Valley)
I can't believe he is dead!
Nancie (San Diego)
Sometimes we need to learn how to live by observing the life of someone who has died. Rep. Cummings death has not gone unnoticed or unexplained, and the meaning of his life will not be soon forgotten. What a soul he had! I'm so sorry we lost him, but to hear from those who knew him has been a priceless gift to our families and the nation.
Ron (NC)
I was so starved for expressions of love of country, I could hardly wait until the funeral today. It took care of my hunger for messages of not only love but of loyalty, hope, and compassion. These are words we have always heard at funerals for fallen leaders, but today they took on a much higher meaning.
Susan B. A. (Resistanceville)
"We must all love each other or die." --- W. H. Auden, *September 1,1939* Elijah Cummings didn't just understand that line from one of the great poems in literature - he lived it daily. He was a walking example of it who invited us to follow him, believing till the day he died that each of us could. I believe he will be happy if we at least try.

Much respect your way, Mr. Cummings. I lost an idol and our country lost a great public servant. I hope we will all take the time to reflect on the messages he leaves us with, and cultivate kindness. Godspeed.
Time - Space (Wisconsin)
What a beautiful life Congressman Elijah Cummings led. What a beautiful ceremony to celebrate his life. Thank God for the descendants of a people torn from their homeland, only to give their new homeland a new heart and soul and immense inner strength.
Sandra (Ja)
Whenever I listen to what he told Cohen tears come to my eyes. What a funeral, a good sending off A great man with presence. Rest in peace.

Oh, how thirsty and famished our country’s soul is for a real leader, teacher, caregiver and global steward. And, by caregiver I mean whoever has the honor of leading this country, intrinsically needs to internalize and act upon a genuine concern for the well being of their citizens, and for people as a whole. We WILL get to a better place. Not back to what it was before, but better and smarter. All of these petty disruptors who are trying so hard to destroy this country’s fabric, are entertaining themselves in vain.
Roxy Schaefer (Albany Ca)
Could there be a more perfect human being. Rest In Peace dear Elija. You earned the best seat in the house.
Olenska (New England)
Rest in peace, Elijah Cummings - and rest in power.
VT Hiker (Shelburne VT)
It says it all when we have lost two great leaders and public servants - Elijah Cummings and John McCain - and our president was not welcome at either service. Cummings and McCain were from both sides of the aisle, but had the respect of both parties, and the integrity to work for the good of the country. Replacing them will not be easy, but we must not give up.
ellie k. (michigan)
Very sad commentary on these terrible times that the sitting president can’t bring himself, once again, to honorably mourn the passing of those who served. The contrast with former presidents speaks volumes.
Time - Space (Wisconsin)
He was “Dad” to his daughters. and a Good Father to all citizens. He cared for and loved his countrymen and women. God Speed, Elijah!
Bill Wilkerson (Maine)
Don't sitting presidents usually attend the funerals of members of the House?
JM (Los Angeles)
@Bill Wilkerson Trump was probably not invited.
Ronald (NYC)
@Bill Wilkerson Probably not.
Bill Wilkerson (Maine)
@Ronald Or playing golf.
Victor L'Esperance (Salem, MA)
I admired the way Representative Cummings used his pulpit as Chairman to speak out against injustice. His comments about the immigration crisis were forceful and poignant. He was especially moving when talking about the squalid conditions children were experiencing while confined away from their parents. However, I did not appreciate how the reporter/headline writer injected the presidential primary into the story by mentioning Elizabeth Warren but not the former Vice-President of the United States, Joe Biden. This trivializes the story and the writer/editor as petty. This was a totally inappropriate place for this type of mischief.
Tricia (Charleston)
The people who spoke at the service were mentioned. Joe Biden didn't speak, although his presence was prominently featured. I don't think Joe was slighted by the NYT.
Sarah Carlson (Seattle)
Such a beautiful man- my heart breaks he couldn’t have been with us longer. So much love and strength and inspiration. A guiding light.
daytona4 (Ca.)
It was wonderful to see the heartfelt tributes to Congressman Cummings spoken by former Presidents Clinton and Obama as well as former Secretary of State Clinton and Speaker of the House Pelosi. Mr. Cummings was a true leader, a man who was humble, sincere, kind, and fought for his district in Maryland, his state, and most importantly in the last few years for our country. He was a true hero to many peoples when we have so very few heroes. RIP Elijah Cummings you have certainly earned it.
Paul Wortman (Providence)
When "compassion and empathy" and respect for others are so lacking in politics today, it's truly a great loss that such a man of character, courage, honor, and practitioner of "the golden rule" has been lost. His loss though should be our challenge to live up to the legacy he left. May God bless the Honorable Elijah Cummings for providing in death a lesson in life.
JayBee (Short Hills, NJ)
The HONORABLE Elijah E. Cummings, I wish you could have remained with us to witness the election in November 2020 when a new president will be elected, the person who can lead our country on a better path, just like you tried to do throughout your distinguished career. Rest in peace, Congressman Cummings. I will miss your decency, honesty and integrity.

Serving the common good--there is no higher calling. Grateful citizen.
Citizen (Michigan)
I remember watching Rep. Cummings excoriate Michigan's governor, Rick Snyder, and his appointees during the Flint water crisis hearings. I got to thinking: if I were justifiably accused of governmental malfeasance, this is not a guy I would want to testify before at the witness table. With a deep baritone voice and great eloquence, Rep. Cummings lacerated witnesses in their efforts to divert blame and point fingers elsewhere, turning some, including Governor Snyder, red with humiliation. That was a small enough price compared to the harm they brought upon the good citizens of Flint. What a titanic presence, Rep. Cummings had. He genuinely carried such integrity and honesty with him, this country needed Rep. Cummings earlier in his career and for many more years.
Check His Power Now (NYC)
And, yet again, another funeral or memorial of a great American in which the current occupant of the White House’s presence is either unwelcome or rebuffed, and most certainly not missed.
Positively (4th Street)
And yet, the president remains silent. Thank you, Mr. Hon. Representative from Baltimore, Maryland. Godspeed.
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
It is sobering to realize just how *young* Elijah Cummings was when he died. It seems (at least to me) he was around for eons; virtually born into the Civil Rights movement. I am sure he couldn't imagine the day he was beating- almost to death on a bridge for daring to be born Black he would go on to become one of the most potent leaders in Congress; still fighting "The Good Fight" for a righteous and just cause: Equality. I was also thrilled to see and hear that inimitable way President Obama has with words; eloquently throwing shade to those who know nothing about being honorable-yet demand the title.
Yadoms (Cheshire)
@candlewick, it was Senator John Lewis who was beaten on that bridge during that Civil rights march. Not Rep Elijah Cummings. Please do not confuse the two men.
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
@Yadoms You are absolutely correct; my faux pas.
Space Needle (Seattle)
@Yadoms - actually, John Lewis is not a Senator, he serves in the House.
Ratbag (Los angeles)
Trump chose today to visit an HBCU (Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina) to have a discussion on criminal justice. The audience was stacked with administration people and friends of the administration. Only 10 seats were reserved for black students!

Mr. Cummings funeral showed the best of America.
Sean (Ft Lee. N.J.)
Dignified funeral minus disgraceful current White House occupant. RIP honorable Elijah Cummings.
Raj Sinha (Princeton)
Our nation lost a very HONORABLE citizen: Elijah Cummings. President Obama is absolutely right. Unfortunately, Trump upended the social structure of probity and comity of our country. We are becoming increasingly tribalistic towards each other. Under the despotic Presidency of Trump, our country is drowning deeper and deeper into a deep pool of despicable demagoguery and our democracy is deconstructing into a dysfunctional dystopia.
TheniD (Phoenix)
A honorable great man. He will be dearly missed!
cherrylog754 (Atlanta,GA)
For me the most poignant moment in the loss of Representative Cummings was a photograph. It appeared the other day in this paper I believe, a photo of a United States Capitol Police Officer. He was standing just outside Elijah Cummings office, head bowed, with his hand over his eyes. He was crying. Thank you for your service Elijah Cummings. We will miss you.
Dave (Canada)
As a Canadian, of late, it has not been easy to admire an American politician. Elijah E. Cummings was the true exception. His booming, pastor-like voice would move you and as a true man of principles, he stood head and shoulders above his peers. I can only hope his integrity, his honour and his belief in helping others can become characteristics that not only politicians but people in general once again start to believe in.
ExileFromNJ (Maricopa County AZ)
Getting to know this man in light of the past year or so from his investigative activity it's easy to see that he was the real, real deal.
Peter I Berman (Norwalk, CT)
One of the great moments in American history with the passing of one of the 3 giants of American Black leadership in our era. Former President Obama was on target demonstrating his oratorical skills have been unmatched in our time. Now who will fill the huge shoes left behind by the Honorable Cummings ? That none of the Republican leaders were invited to speak illustrates how sharp our political divisions have become. As was President Trump’s absence. What can be done to repair these enormous divisions that threaten our polity.
Jerry Fitzsimmons (Jersey)
Just a real decent man in contrast to the obvious. Can America get back in that direction. We need more of the former and none of the latter.RIP,our lost.
ReggieM (Florida)
My husband and I thought we’d watch a bit of the funeral of the Honorable Elijah Cummings on C-Span this morning and surprised ourselves by being caught up in the entire event. I think we stayed with it because the proceedings proved to be miles above the gutter fighting and ignorant dialogue coming from our White House, the spite-filled Trump rallies and the lawless antics of the Freedom Caucus in the Halls of Congress. More than a respite from this interminable onslaught, the celebration of this life reminded us the country is full of admirable, intelligent, respectful people who are making a difference, especially those Black Americans who overcame a painful past and personal triumph. In every way, the funeral personified Congressman Cumming’s famous call: “We can be better than that.” He cleverly planned his funeral, as if determined to show, “We are better than that.”
Zoey (Detroit)
Truth, integrity, and kindness always prevail. This is greatness and the measure of a life. Some hope this country needs to be reminded of at this time when it seems as if meanness, cruelty and hate are winning.
Charna (Forest Hills)
Obama spoke about a seed planted in the soil. A reference that noted that Mr Cummings parents were sharecroppers. Obama again referenced that seed that was beautiful and grew. That was Elijah Cummings! At the end of his speech Obama hoped more seeds would be planted and flourish like the life of Congressman Cummings. On the other hand Mr Trump wants foreign countries to dig up dirt on his political opponents.
Wolfgang (from Europe)
As a German European with a keen interest in - and (still) a certain affection for - your great nation ( and a teenage daughter currently visiting one of your High Schools) I feel very sorry for your loss, America. Watching the service for Mr Cummings and listening to President Obama left me sitting here, shaking my head, wondering how and what happened, that these US of A fell victim to this indecent clown, currently soiling the WH and a GOP, that apparently has sold it’s soul. Incomprehensible. And again: I am sorry for your loss, America.
Kelly (Canada)
@Wolfgang I am sure that many other observers in foreign lands echo your sentiments, as I do. I watched the Honorable Mr, Cummings in an earlier hearing. That one experience suggested his contributions to civil discourse and good government. Sorry for your loss, USA; and I hope that others will carry on Mr. Cummings' fine work.
Charlton (Price)
@Wolfgang We shall overcome, Herr Wolfgang. Becuse we can produce people liker Elijah Cummings, we shall prevail.
Rose (Cape Cod)
I pray that the soul of this beautiful man rests in God Eternal peace. Watching Rep. Elijah Cummings speak was always uplifting and gave me hope...that this too will pass (trump's presidency) and have a positive outcome. I cannot imagine the sadness for all who had the privilege of working with him and being in his presence. In his name may the House prevail and impeach and may the Republicans return to their senses and remember to whom they took their oath of office...their constituents and the US Constitution. A retired NYC teacher white teacher
Seinstein (Jerusalem)
“By example, he gave people hope.” More than just the word! And if another “h” word, HYPOCRISY, is not to remain weaponized, what is the meaning, singular as well of plural, of seating an enemy of democratic principles, norms, values and ethics, the desecrator of the Presidency, the “hopes” of many, including kidnapped, caged, abused, neglected, traumatized children, in the same site which traditionalizes American democracy with all of its flaws?
Julie (West Reading, PA)
Even though I did not personally know Elijah Cummings, waking up to the news of his death last week made me feel like I had been sucker-punched. I admired him so much, especially these last horrible two years. We will miss him so much.
MacDonald (Canada)
What! No Trump? He becomes more and more loathsome each day.
john boomer (nebraska)
If President Trump is a real man, he would have come to this great man's funeral to pay his respects. It's a disgrace that our current President never showed up.
XXX (Phiadelphia)
Did Trump even know this was going on? Does Fox News report on this?
Joanne Dean (Chester, UK)
Elijah Cummings had something that Trump will never ever possess: the love and respect of the people around him. President Trump has money and power, but few people (if any) will mourn him when he shuffles off this mortal coil.

His Voice, His Deeds and His LIFE are a much needed balm for our worn and tattered Souls. I’m not religious, but when I listened to Him, I truly wanted to believe. Now, I’ll try to live my life like he’s watching. Not judging, but guiding.
Barbara Manor (Germany)
Elijah E. Cummings is the path of the just as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Elijah thank you for your life so well lived to give hope and guidance to look for when we waiver.
mnc (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.)
I don't think I moved the whole four hours as I watched this beautiful tribute to a fine man of the people. I hope the strength of the messages were heeded by all the young people watching and someone will step up and take the place of this warrior for good. Rest in Peace, Elijah Eugene Cummings.
bruceo (nova scotia)
It's so nice to hear the measured voices of the two former Presidents. It gives me comfort that there are many compassionate people in America who are able to speak in an honest tone. At this time in your history it's so needed.
Lianne (NYC)
Hard to see the TV this morning, though the tears, but worth getting up early (on the west coast) to watch the last journey of Elijah Cummings. I can truthfully say that I loved this man and all he stood for and look for more to come along continuing his work. Thank you Mr. Cummings for all you did. You are a person to be emulated. Sad day.
Carlton (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Even when President Obama says a little, he says a lot. the remarks which included the referenced "honorable man" was priceless. I also thought Hilary Clinton's speech was superb. The greeting for Madam Speaker Pelosi was well deserved. The audience reminded me of the country at it's best.
Steve (Dayton)
@Carlton “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”
Dennis (Plymouth, MI)
A beautifully told story about the admiration and respect given to this man which he so richly deserved.
Mhmllr (San Francisco)
Elijah E. Cummings was an archetype of what we hope for in a political leader. Few people get to symbolize our high ideals of public service, but he did, and in our time those ideals are ever more rare, and we know it and mourn that too.
Bruce Anderson (CA)
I'm an "old white guy" and this service gave me hope again. This represented the great America I remember as a child. We had challenges but we worked together to overcome them. And regrettably we still have a tremendous amount of work to do. Thank you to men like Elijah Cummings and his community who had a harder journey of it. Thank you! "History make you smart, heritage makes you proud!"
k martino (dallas, tx)
@Bruce Anderson And listening to Obama gives me great hope. I forget how inspiring and on point that man is, we were lucky to have had him as president as well as lucky to have had Elijah Cummings representing all the good people that need and deserve a voice.
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
@Bruce Anderson Pride is one of the original sins. Maybe in this case it's justified.
Cowens (Kansas)
@Bruce Anderson I am an "old white guy" too and not ashamed of that fact. I know that is not cool in a leftward moving society. Could you ever imagine as a child or young adult that we would ever see a bidding war among the candidates of who can offer the most free stuff out of the public treasury and make successful people pay for it?
Thomas Renner (New York City)
Watching the service made me think how far we have fallen as a country. We are so used to people like Trump and pals in the GOP it really makes you stop and think when you see and hear president Obama and Clinton talk about Elijeh
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
I just listened to President Obama say that "Elijah Cumming was 'Honorable' before he came to Congress". How true! Elijah Cummings was one of the great leaders in our US history He led by example. He was one of the few great voices, who could uplift our government, by just walking into a room. He innately distinguished between right and wrong - and let us know when he thought we were straying. The Honorable Eligjah Cummings will be long remembered in the history books. He is already sorely missed.
CJ (CT)
I heard all of the speeches; it was amazing to be reminded of what we once had-leaders who are intelligent, compassionate and articulate. I hope young people watch the speeches so they will know what real leaders sound like and how they think.
Kelly Grace Smith (syracuse, ny)
One of the finest moments I have witnessed this week was the pall bearer at Representative Elijah E. Cummings funeral declining to shake the hand of Mitch McConnell...and Senator Chuck Schumer refusing to provide McConnell a reassuring look. It wasn't a fine moment because I'm being "mean" or snarky...it was a fine moment watching a man refuse to shake the hand of someone whom he cannot excuse or condone. Leaders like McConnell believe their actions, words and behaviors are "just politics." They're not. They are an accurate - albeit not complete - reflection of the individual. Who you are in politics...is who you are. Period. When we say "its just politics," or "its just business," or "its just family" what we are really doing is excusing wrong-doing and subscribing to a false paradigm. A false paradigm that politics or business, or even family...makes harmful, hurtful, divisive or damaging words or actions okay. Belief in this paradigm...is how we got here. Elijah Cummings did not ascribe to this paradigm and I imagine, neither does this dignified pallbearer. God bless them both. You don't have to be a strongman to be a real man.
Jackson (Virginia)
@Kelly Grace Smith Finest? No, disgusting that he made it political. Classless.
Seinstein (Jerusalem)
You described a nameless person and his chosen act to be personally accountable. With a well known, powerful, policymaker. An elected mortal. Behaving Godlike; at times. McConnell, who in his daily corruptness, represents personal unaccountability for his words and deeds; harmful in their implications and outcomes. Temporarily as well as more permanently. This nameless “bearer,” reminds each of US, in our toxic, enabled, ummenschlich WE-THEY violating culture that freedom IS the choice, each day, in expected and unexpected opportunities to contribute to making a needed difference that can make a sustainable difference for the equitable wellbeing and health of ALL.
denny (California)
@Kelly Grace Smith I believe that was Rep Cummings Brother James not a nameless pallbearer. But I agree with your sentiment. Who you are in politics...is who you are. Period. I will add I believe that what politics you believe is how you view the world. I believe Republican sbelieve that they are somehow better than the rest of us that they should have all the world riches no matter how they got them. They are not true democrats believing the equality of all people. That's what I believe.
DR (New England)
My heart aches for what our country has lost with the passing of this great man. Many thanks to President Obama for so beautifully expressing just how wonderful Mr. Cummings truly was.
Carsafrica (California)
@DR We will so miss Elijah Cummings. I so miss President Obama . I hope he can play a role in the 2020 that brings out the best in all Americans as Elijah Cummings would so wish
two cents (Chicago)
Presidents Clinton and Obama. Two of the most gifted orators in American politics in the last century. Smart, compassionate, articulate. I miss that.
S H (SC)
I watched most of this beautiful ceremony, and I cried upon seeing President Obama and hearing his voice. It made me feel good to know that at one time we had not only such a great leader, but a great human being leading this country. RIP the HONORABLE Elijah Cummings.
Charlton (Price)
@ There have been some other great ones, S H. Elijah Cummings joins them in our hearts.
Alabama (Independent)
The death of Elijah Cummings was not one that I was prepared to see. He was of the utmost importance to those of us Americans to whom he spoke and represented in the darkest hour of our nation as we confront a monstrous force of evil the like of which we have never before seen nor ever wish to see again.
law student (baltimore)
RIP Mr. Cummings. Thank you for your struggles on behalf of us all. Celebrate with those angels you are dancing with when our democracy pulls through.
Tonjo (Florida)
When Rep. Elijah Cummings was in the minority and Darrel Issa was in charge of the House Oversite, Elijah acted with restraint when Issa was making all sort of accusations against Democrats. Now that Elijah was in charge of the House Oversite, the Republican minority seemed furious but it did not bother Elijah and he kept focused, no false accusation like Issa. He was not a blabbermouth like Issa was. It is sad to see that he did not accomplish what he wanted to do. Rest in peace Elijah.
Sarah (Rochester)
Thank you, Sir, for your long service to your constituents and your country. Rest in power.
Hortencia (Charlottesville)
Sometimes there are a few people who rise to the level of honorable for their character and many goods work on behalf of others. And a few of these illustrious people are also prophets. Elijah Cummings was one. May he Rest In Peace.
Gary P (Austin, TX)
I have cried while reading all the articles about this great man’s passing. We needed him badly in our current fight to save our democracy, and he will not be easily replaced. I hope he has inspired many in Congress and public life to continue the struggle against the liars and criminals who are now at work tearing down much of what we admire and love about our country.
piet hein (Rowayton CT)
.....Where was The Chosen One, the one with unmatched intelligence. His appearance could have a moment of Grace for and could even have, God forbid, given him a chance at being a gracious Human being.
Jerry Fitzsimmons (Jersey)
@piet hein You have to be kidding.
McCabe (California)
@piet heiN Thankfully he wasn't there. It was such a pleasure to hear speeches that were compassionate, smart, and articulate instead of the self-congratulatory babble that we have sadly become accustomed to. There is no way he could have got in front of the podium and not mentioned how much bigger the crowd was at his inauguration.
Daniela (Kinske)
This is the funeral for a hero--a true statesmen and all of those who have, and do, toss out their integrity daily to support an orange monster--this is why we honor the so very, very few men and women who are brave and show integrity, honesty, kindness, and empathy. Those are worth celebrating--the rest are for forgetting.
Ashleigh Adams (USA)
He passed away more than a week ago and I still tear up when he’s talked about on TV or when I read articles about it. He wasn’t even my Congressman and I still feel great pain - knowing he was in the House always made me feel just a little safer in the Trump era, because he was fearless and dogged in his pursuit of justice. What a fine, exemplary member of Congress he was, and what a devastating loss for our country for him to pass away, especially at this moment. May you dance with angels and rest in power, Congressman Cummings. America was very, very lucky to have you.
jvr (Minneapolis)
@Ashleigh Adams I totally agree with you.
Tony (New York City)
@jvr Like you I am heartbroken with this specific Honorable Elijah E. Cummings passing away. I had no idea that he was so ill. I rushed to the TV whenever I heard his voice and was so proud of him that I could barely contain myself. I will try to carry myself in the manner that he often talked about how we should behave professionally especially in these very dark time. Trump received an award for justice at an HSBC on the very sad day we said good bye to our hero a very special American I checked myself and said what would Elijah do, he wouldn't let anger cloud his judgement. I will remember this great man till my last breath. See you soon, we did listen to everything you taught us. I for one will try to do better .
jerome stoll (Newport Beach)
Actually I saw quite a few other Democratic candidates. Why did you mention Warren as apposed to a list of all the candidates or none of the candidates for President. The on major persona not showing up, the guy down the street at the White House was a no show. Surprise! Surprise!
Nina Bernstein (New York)
Warren was the only Democratic candidate who had a speaking part in the funeral service. She read a psalm. I assume the family wanted her to have that role.
Robert (Portland, OR)
@jerome stoll I have to assume at least in part that Trump assessed, accurately, that he would not be welcome.
Yvette (NYC)
I watched the funeral coverage on C-Span. It was so mo ing to hear him being so lovingly eulogized by his friends and family. He was obviously a very good man and a very good father. The life he lived speaks for him through the eulogies at his service. His wife spoke eloquently and lovingly about him and his love for Baltimore and our Country. RIP Congressman Cummings..
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
"When we’re dancing with the angels, the question we’ll be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing ? " Impeach for the Prophet Elijah Cummings
RKM (Somewhere in the west)
Listening to my president, Obama, brought tears to my eyes. What a stark difference there is between the inspiration of Obama and the embarrassing puffery and lies of NOT my president Trump.
JT (Upstate NY)
Listen to Barack Obama's eulogy: this is what a real president sounds like, a real president acts like, and a real president is. How far we've fallen with the current fraud, trespasser and fever nightmare that is Donald Trump.
Brookhawk (Maryland)
OK, Republicans, make your choice. You can be Donald Trump, or you can be Elijah Cummings. Look in the mirror and decide.
IntrepidMan (Ohio)
Such an honorable man.....you will be missed!
Elinor (NYC)
Joe Biden was there too. He entered with Nancy Pelosi.
Lissa (Hattersley)
Unsurprisingly, President Obama gave a wonderful eulogy at the service, already lauded many times here in the comments. But I also thought President Clinton's was pretty great, too. Warm and authentic. Representative Cummings was certainly deserving of every word spoken today, and will not be forgotten.
BG (NYC)
Rest in peace, beautiful and honorable man.
Paul Wertz (Eugene, OR)
Americans by the hundreds gather in Baltimore to honor the memory and decency of Elijah Cummings, as they should. May there be peace for his family and friends and may his example prevail.
Katrin (Wisconsin)
"The ... devoted congressman, who lived in the heart of West Baltimore ... would simply give a knowing nod to those who recognized him on the street. He carried himself like anyone else when running errands or taking a walk around the block." I was standing in the Cannon House Building once when he came by, and he made eye contact and wished me "Good Morning." A simple courtesy. A classy gentleman.
Elizabeth (Florida)
Thank you Elijah Cummings. You gave me a chance to hear one more time My President! My President - grace, dignity eloquence - no verbal salad thank you. My President - President Barack Hussein Obama. Thank you HONORABLE Elijah Cummings.
Suzanne Victor (Southampton, PA)
What a moving service for a great man, Elijah Cummings. But, Barack Obama has left me in tears. I know I am repeating comments already made. But, it is worth repeating. How far we have fallen in just a few short years and how I mourn what we have lost. And, wonder if we will ever get it back.
Steve (Dayton)
@Suzanne Victor Any fake tears from Bill?
Marie S (Portland, OR)
@Steve What a horrible comment. Pres. Clinton knew Rep. Cummings well and gave an eloquent, heartfelt eulogy. The contrast between all of the speakers today and the classless, heartless, petty, horrible man in the White House couldn't have been starker.
Bill Scurry (New York, NY)
These are the Good Guys. Look to them.
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
It is shameful and disgraceful that the President of the United States of America aka the Donald was not at the funeral of a truly great America. POTUS should be impeached for this crass insult of an American hero. On top of everything else.
Jackson (Virginia)
@Milton Lewis And you liberals would have complained if he did go.
carol goldstein (New York)
@Milton Lewis I was glad he was not there.
Mary Ann Donahue (NYS)
@Milton Lewis ~ trump is shameful in many ways but I believe that Rep. Cummings is more honored by the absence of the hateful crassness trump personifies. I think Elijah Cummings would be happy that trump did not attend, perhaps even that behind the scenes and quietly trump was asked to stay away. He (djt) is the opposite of all the class and goodness and honor Rep. Cummings represented.
Banjokatt (Chicago, IL)
I, too, was born 68 years ago. Yet, my contributions to the good of our society are but a small pittance compared with that of the honorable Elijah Cummings. He has inspired me to try harder. The speeches, especially those by Presidents Clinton and Obama, were breathtakingly beautiful, especially when they referred to trumpf’s mean-spirited comments about Baltimore. I hope the Times will publish transcripts of these two speeches.
ami (Wisconsin)
@Banjokatt Watch the entire event. Every speaker brought a new dimension to his character and his remarkable life.
Lee Downie (Henrico, NC)
@Banjokatt I'm a little surprised that George W. Bush wasn't there. Didn't he and Rep. Cummings get along?
KS (NY)
As I watched the service today, I couldn't help contrasting President Trump's speeches and demeanor to those of Presidents Clinton and Obama. Agree or disagree with their politics, those two men were Presidential. I sure miss that and so much more.
Sarah (Rochester)
@KS Who always responded appropriately to occasions. I think of Clinton in Oklahoma City, Obama in Charleston as “comforters in chief."
Pillai (St.Louis, MO)
Still brings a tear to my eye - as it did when he passed away last Friday early morning. It is a rarity to genuinely mourn for a politician in these times. It is a true loss for Baltimore and our entire country. May he always be remembered for being the eloquent, kind, unimpeachable human being that he was. And may he rest in peace.
Kevin (Vancouver)
As I watch President Barack Obama give his eulogy for the honourable Elijah Cummings, I truly feel heartbroken about how far America has fallen in such a short time. But I know this, following the example of both these amazing men, and all the people who love them and the kind of human being they are, your country will not just survive, but will come back stronger and more beautiful than before.
two cents (Chicago)
@Kevin Thanks for your vote of confidence and for waiting on us to rebound. As Churchill remarked: Americans always do the right thing... eventually.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
Just heard President Obama speak...eloquent, moving, with that wit yet solemnity that I so much miss. It is striking that in our lives we have had two strong sturdy bookends on each side holding many of us together and upright like them...both African Americans, both leaders who far out-weigh any of the white and amoral whom we must endure both in the White House and in our Congress. Let this be a lesson to us, that beauty comes from within no matter our race, ethnicity, or spiritual beliefs. Thank you, Elijah Cummings. Thank you, Barack Obama. Your legacies and history will indeed be kind.

Today we celebrate the life of a man who stood up for whatever challenges came his way he stood for Democracy, the right for everyone to be equal, the right for every man to be free there must have been times when he stopped to wonder why, why was he doing all of this, why did he care so much, he could have been like so many turned towards what would benefit him but instead he chose to be the voice, the voice of justice, the voice of strength and truth, he wasn't always right but though I did not have the privilege of meeting and knowing him he seemed genuine and when he thought he was wrong he would apologize, an apology from the soul, not one to utter shallowness to suit the moment, today he is still present and will continue to be as long as we allow him to that means do not forget, remember we all have a purpose in life, some of us choose to be forceful with our actions and words, some choose to be quiet in the background still strong in their own way, then some choose to be cowards, to hide behind a facade of destructiveness, divisiveness, to speak untruths that benefit them and their cause that can hurt to the point of causing despair, but at the end of their time, who will be there to uplift them towards the Highest, it is not a simple thing to live a life well lived it means at times sacrificing a bit of yourself in order to uplift many, so today Mr. Cummings we celebrate you, your voice, your smile, the tears you shed for the unjustice, Dance with the Heavens forever

Elijah Cummings was a warrior for truth, fairness and decency. He valiantly stood up to hypocrisy and refused to waver when threatened by great power. We morn the passing of this fine gentleman who served his constituents and our country so well.

This is a homegoing that Baltimore can be proud of. I'm watching your livestream and quietly crying. I lived and went to school in Charm City/Mobtown/Balwamer, and it is a city like nowhere else. It's a badge of honor that Trump insulted it. Elijah Cummings is indeed dancing with the angels.
Emmanuel Goldstein (Oceania)
Meanwhile, president Trump is giving a campaign rally at a historically-black college in South Carolina with only 10 (carefully-screened) students allowed to attend. When it comes to sheer petty vindictiveness, could anyone expect anything less?
Christine (Michigan)
Wish he was my president. Thanks God for him.

Something we can all agree on
CathyK (Oregon)
Rep Cummings treated everyone as human beings wished we all could

A true gentleman who will be greatly missed! God Bless and may he rest in peace knowing the fight goes on.
glorybe (new york)
He fought for his neighbors, something we all need to do. R.I.P.

Elijah, you are a great American.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
The boundary lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. --- Psalm 16:6 Cummings is being acknowledged as a hero today by all Americans with eyes in their head to see and had successfully faced-down many setbacks and adversities in his life that would have crippled many other people. A goodly heritage indeed. One that all of us could wish for ourselves.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
I will miss Representative Cummings. Admittedly, I really did not know the man until this Trump administration. Yet, I had become in awe of his oratory, his dignity and morality, his passion for not only equality for all peoples but also for justice and truth. He spoke truth to power with eloquence and poignancy. There is little, if any, good that has been borne of this indeed horrid Trump administration. Yet, this nation has been gifted with a man who has set a tone which we must heed and has admirably mentored not only his colleagues in the House but also so many of us you’s and me’s.
WhatTheWow (North Sanity)
@Kathy Lollock I just learned about Elijah also through the last several months. A voice from the wilderness. "They Just Don’t Make Them Like They Use to Anymore" They Just Don’t Make Them Like Elijah Cummings Anymore.
Jane K (Northern California)
I was not familiar with Mr Cummings until the last couple of years, as well. But when I saw the last hearing with Michael Cohen, I was so impressed with the dignity and respect he showed to everyone in that room, including Michael Cohen especially. His kindness and ability to see the humanity in the situation was remarkable. Unfortunately, it has become too rare in the current political climate. Condolences to his family and friends.

Maya’s eulogy was amazing, inspiring and powerful . A totally class act.
MIMA (heartsny)
If only there were more Elijah Cummings. So comforting we did not have to see Donald Trump sitting at this great man’s funeral service. Perhaps not coming was the most decent thing Trump could have done for our country.
kkm (NYC)
@MIMA : Perhaps the only decent thing Donald Trump has done during his time spent in the Oval Office...which is hopefully ending soon ...perhaps Elijah can orchestrate this from above!
JT (Mytown)
@KR , Surely you jest. If not, please tell us all how his activities today are Keeping America Great.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
@MIMA My guess is that Trump probably thought about attending, just to stick it to his enemies and boast of it to his supporters, but when a man is busy trying to stay out of jail, he has to carefully consider his proprieties.

This is what H.L. Mencken once wrote about another notable Baltimorean of his day: “Mourning him would be rather silly. He died too soon, but so do we all. The universe is run idiotically, and its only certain product is sorrow. But there are yet men who, by their generally pleasant spirits, by their dignity and decency, by their extraordinary capacity for making and keeping friends, yet manage to cheat, in some measure, the common destiny of mankind, doomed like the beasts to perish." -- Extract from a 1932 obituary that Mencken wrote about one of his closest friends, Albert Hildebrandt of Baltimore, a cellist and dealer in rare violins. I would have liked to have met Congressman Cummings and say thank you for what he did for the country and for Baltimore.

“ I shall not wholly die, and a great part of me will escape the grave “ - Horace. Sweet Elijah, an Angel once again. Much love and respect to His Family and Friends. He was Magnificent.

@Phyliss Dalmatian - fitting and extraordinarily beautiful sentiment...
JRB (KCMO)
A dignified, classy farewell to a good man...made all the more so by the uninvited presence of Trump.
Davi Napoleon (Ann Arbor, MI)
Elijah Cummings planned his funeral and decided who would be asked to participate. He included only one 2020 candidate, Elizabeth Warren, a strong endorsement of the senator!
stuckincali (l.a.)
@Davi Napoleon uh, Joe Biden is there...
Larry Segall (Barra de Navidad Mexico)
@stuckincali "Participate".

@stuckincali Did he speak?

Our country, and our allies, are so grateful for your service, Representative Cummings. You fought the good fight as a labor of love, and a profound demonstration of extraordinary character. I can't say rest in peace, because we know that you won't be at peace until we set our country back on an honorable path. You gave everything humanly possible to help us restore that honor - and now it's our turn to pick up and carry your mantle proudly. You will be missed, mourned, and revered.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
@common sense advocate AMEN.
