Can Social Media Be a Tool for Learning and Growth in Schools?

I consider that this choice should be made by the children's parents. On the one hand social media can be a tool for learning because nowadays many children use them every day and many hours of the day. Is a way to give their interest and to learn more easily. On the other hand I don't completely agree because children are addicted to the internet and spend many hours there so the only hours to detox from it is when they are at school or studying and in my opinion we should have time off the internet. So on the one hand it is good because it might help them understand the lessons but on the other hand it will throw them even deeper into the internet.

I feel like social media should be a tool for learning and growth in schools because kids nowadays, including myself, use social media pretty much throughout the day. From a survey done, about 90 percent of teens ages 13-17 have used social media and about 75 percent have at least one active social media account. This tells us that kids use social media a lot and that if we could a little education to it, it could be more easier for us kids to learn or to do activities more. Kids usually despise school, probably because of the work or the homework school gives us. Adding the things we learn onto social media, could probably change it around.

I believe that social media is capable of benefiting both students and teachers. There are hundreds of students and teachers that use social media and it is a way to communicate with people, receive news, and share your thoughts. My school has made several accounts on social media and it is a good way to share information. I have seen several different posts of school activities and sports on social media that I wouldn't have ever known about. Social media helps update people about what is going on around them and they can learn new things from these posts. However, I do not believe that all types of social media is beneficial for students. Even though I do believe that Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat are good ways to communicate with the school, I also believe that apps like TikTok are not beneficial for us. Apps like TikTok are often a cause of distractions for students and sucks them in for hours and hours. It will consume large amounts of time from people and is mainly used as a source of entertainment. Some people do say that TikTok is a good way to enhance creativity from students, but I believe that there are better ways to do this than to use TikTok which can have students lose hours trying to create a single video. In my opinion, schools should implement apps like Instagram to communicate news and information with students from the school. These apps are the least distracting to students and will help schools increase their education for the better.

I believe social media can be used in education. It’s a way for all students to be connected. It allows kids to stay up to date with things happening in the world around them. Social media allows students to be creative and post new things such as photography, videos, art projects, individual interests, sports, politics, and religion. Many kids follow famous influencers that they look up to as a role model to stay connected to them. Social media also allows us to have a voice. We can comment on other people’s posts that we agree or disagree with teaching us how to challenge each other’s ideas and learn new things. In conclusion, I believe social media can be used for educational purposes because it’s keeps everyone informed and connect to one another.

Social media is use very frequently by teens whether it for their personal account or to advertise for a school or business account. I think social can be a good tool for school because it show or teach students about about whats appropriate to post online and can also in a way teach them about business, advertisement and management. Students can make account for after school actives and info other about when games are or when club are. How everything I feel as tho there are many more cons to using social as a tool in school. Social media can be very addicting and depending on what people post. Some people might post thing that make people insure and put their confidence down because their body or face or anything isn't the same as that person for that person. It can cause depression in student because they don't believe that they fit into the society because they don't look a certain way. Social mean can also make make lazier and less motivated. I personally think that that cons out weigh the pros.
Stavros T (Greece)
Many students are familiar with social media and pretty additected to them. People argue that social media helps students to be more creative and critique. Also can engage students in class. On the other hand, social media can create a atmosphere of distraction. I believe that the social media can't be used for educational purposes. Maybe youtube it could be a exception.
Ava S. (BRYANT HIGH SCHOOL, ARKANSAS)
As a student myself, I believe social media is an advantage to everyday school life. I personally think it is time for more schools to adapt to this new way of communication and corporate it into school life, which would then get students more willing to learn and participate. My school has multiple social media accounts, whether it's for sports teams, clubs, the choir/band, etc, which allows students who are not in those activities, to still keep up with the progress being made and awards being earned. The article mentions a new extremely popular app, Tik Tok, which is a video with a song playing over it, while the account user is dancing, singing, etc. This could be a very useful tool in a classroom to, for example, get the students to make a creative video on rapping the periodic table, while still expressing themselves in a fun and entertaining way! I would be lying if I said social media has no downfalls, such as distraction, but as long as the teacher can utilize it for learning purposes, it would be a great advantage to the classroom.
Sadie C. (Sarasota, FL)
As a student myself, I do prefer the traditional way of learning, but I can see why social media would have a positive impact on finding new and better ways for students to learn. It provides a huge gateway of communication and sharing. Social media has actually helped me stay updated about my school and has allowed me to talk to my teachers and keep up with assignments, but I will admit, it has often distracted me from completing work in class. Overall, I just think that schools should be more adaptable to the world students live in now, but there should be some restrictions when using social media in class.
Josh Wecamp (Germantown MD)
There is no denying that social media is becoming a growing network of communication, sharing, and creating. While many might think that social media is a distraction and has no place in a learning environment, social media might have more benefits and provide a different approach for educators. Knowing that social media dominates the youth’s free time and is a hobby that is genuinely enjoyed by many it can easily be used to encourage collaboration and put what we’re learning about in the classroom in front of our faces on our phones and computers. Having some teachers that use Twitter and Instagram it makes it shocked me when I found myself more interested in those classes, even creating memes with fellow students about our content in AP US History, a class I came into Sophomore year the least excited about. After having experienced the benefits of social media engaging students in learning and being a way to make assignments and free time in a more productive way I think no harm could come from classroom settings introducing social media as a supplement for learning.
Alyssa (sarasota)
I do believe that in some areas social media could be used as a benefit, however most aspects of social media in no way benefit school or learning. In another view social media is distracting enough at home so to be using it in school would be completely disruptive.
Watson Pope (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Alyssa I agree fully with what you are saying in your comment. Social media does have some aspects of it that can be helpful to a student. However in most other aspects it is an addictive distraction, that can prevent the student from doing their work. In the end, I believe that social media is much more of a distraction than a help to the average student.
Vianie Merino (California)
In my opinion, social media and the school curriculum should remain relatively separate. In my experience, social media is useful in ways that typically only benefit the social aspects of students' lives. Instagram and Snapchat, for instance, have been useful to me for understanding or becoming aware of the events occurring around my school. It has, however, rarely benefited the educational factors of my life as a student. Social media, in various ways, has proven to be more of a distraction than a resource and, therefore, should be somewhat distant from student's learning.
Shiera (CNMI)
Within my perspective I believe that schools and teachers shouldn't use social media as a platform in order to interact with students because it creates an atmosphere of distraction. As a student myself, if I and many others were to use social media such as Twitter, TikTok, or even Facebook as an equipment for our education in a classroom setting, it could easily backfire and become an inconvenience to our educators. I say this because an attention span would decrease if it were to come across an intriguing aspect, as the content contained in these apps are majorly based in entertainment, thus not having to actually pay attention to the lesson plan and instructions provided by the teacher. Which may evoke a sense of laziness and procrastination during the class period. Quite frankly, I do not wish upon my school to take part in this as I am convinced that social media and education should remain divided because despite not having anything wrong when engaging into something new, traditional education to me seems more purposeful and appropriate.
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
@Shiera Its the way of the future...teachers had the same views when computers where being implemented in class rooms...its a distraction but they lasted and now they are essential to most classes. Computers could have been a distraction but the schools implemented rules and locks on the computers. The same can be implemented on social media. I don't see the issue with trying it. If it doesn't work then remove it from school.
Denzel (CNMI)
Although my original preference is traditional learning, I agree that schools and teachers should take better advantage of social media to engage with students. Hence, there are many schools around the world that incorporate social media as a tool for learning and relaying information. For instance, my school uses applications like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp to inform students about announcements and upcoming events. As for TikTok, I don't think that schools should apply it to education because it only serves as a source of entertainment for people. Although I agree that TikTok could help develop students' creativity, it would only cause a massive distraction to learning. In addition, there are many potential dangers that may happen along the way such as bullying, addiction, and extreme laziness. TikTok may also consume a huge amount of time as it takes many trials to create a single video. All things considered, I agree that schools should use social media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and educational apps to engage with students, but not TikTok.
Lily Elbel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Denzel Social media being used by teachers would be great. In the direction our society is going, we are becoming more and more technology based. The growth of technology comes with the growth of the internet which comes with the growth of social media. It has become an easy way to contact many people in an orderly manner. As our generation of students gets older we will only see an increase in the use of media like instagram and twitter. It is an untapped den of opportunities that schools just haven’t wanted to use yet. The obvious reason being student’s inability to focus while on social media. It would be a good idea in theory but in reality there will be a minimal amount of students actually focusing on the task at hand while the others go off on their own trying to like and post as much as they can.
Chloerose Ratcliff (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
Today in schools we see how much of an impact technology has had on our education. In middle school, we had laptop and iPad carts but the teachers weren’t very fond of our use of technology. Now in high school, I feel like there’s never a day where we aren’t typing on computers or doing some interactive website to learn new material. Every sports team and club seems to have and Instagram. In the article it talks about how a high school in Winter Garden, Florida is using Tik Tok to bring students together and embrace creativity and I think it’s good that teachers are trying to appeal to what the students want but at the same time I don’t know if Tik Tok is the best way to do it.
Grace Lumsden (Sarasota Florida)
School subjects and social media should be separated. This is because social media can distract us from our core classes. It is acceptable if you are asking someone a question about education or if you are reminding someone something. Although social media might benefit somebodies education it is still dangerous.
Kyle J. (CNMI)
• Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? Personally, I believe social media and education should remain as two separate worlds. Although it could be a useful tool for teachers and their students' education, it is something that I see exclusively as a source of entertainment. Most of the time, people use these platforms as a way to entertain and amuse people by relating to them in ways others might not. It is also an easy way to get others to bully others simply from the creative videos or images they post. For instance, as mentioned in the article, it says that a particular meme mocks the class of 2023 for being cringey and trying too hard. While they're not necessarily targeting anyone, it still could be hurtful to some students who may be part of that class. There have been countless times where instances like that have occurred and taken effect on me. Because I wanted to share my own standpoint on certain issues, especially when I was younger, I have been criticized harshly a number of times for "having the wrong opinion" or "being too young to understand". Overall, what I'm primarily trying to elucidate here is that even if there is a way or two for social media to benefit students by being used as a tool for learning, there are other variables that may get in the way of that academic attainment.

Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? In this generation, social media has been a huge thing for teenagers. It's the way we communicate, know the latest news (or so called "tea"), and just for entertainment. Schools and teachers should use social media to engage with students because it's more effective. But of course, there are limits. I definitely dislike examples about the olden days, it makes me bored. But if it were about something relating to social media, I'd definitely be more intrigued.
Emily Orsino (Florida)
Schools and teachers could definitely benefit with engagement in the children if they were a bit more social media friendly, but not too overkill. At some point the teachers and staff could easily be mocked or made fun of if they post something the students can’t relate to. All around though, social media is certainly a distraction in classrooms but it has the potential to be a utility to engage students more, if done correctly.
Mateo G (Saipan MP)
Schools can promote student growth and ability through social media by allowing students to be creative and critique. For example, schools all around America have opened more and more clubs revolving around social media. TikTok has been infamous for giving people the opportunity to become a viral sensation. With more and more downloads, this platform is on its way on becoming a global phenomenon. Teachers could also use this app in classroom by utilizing it in an interactive way. For instance, they could instruct lessons and integrate TikTok to make the lesson more fun and “hip.”

Are you familiar with TikTok, the app discussed in the article. What’s your take on it? The reporter states that “teachers at many schools say they view TikTok culture as a net positive.” What do you think? TikTOk an app I am very familiar with because of it's advertisements on apps such as Snapchat , Facebook, and Instagram. TikTok is more than just funny videos; it's an app that unlocks creativity, originality, and tutorials on how to do certain things. It's net positive because I myself use TikTok and besides funny videos I come across tutorials on certain things. It's a way to share quick and easy ideas such as how to write an essay, how to draw, how to take notes properly, and e.t.c. I think that Tik Tok is a way to push yourself out of your comfort zone, or a way to express yourself. If you watch some Tik Toks other than your own, you may find something that is educational once in a while, or maybe you will find something that can help you in the long run. Yes, TikTok is is more than just funny videos; it's an app that unlocks creativity, originality, and tutorials on how to do certain things.
Skye Williams (Sarasota, Florida)
I don't think that social media is a good learning tool for students. Social media is a major distraction and can cause students to fall behind. Social media also has a lot of negative and even false information which wouldn't be the best for students to learn from. Although sometimes hearing others ideas can be beneficial to students.
Ty’anna Ash (Sarasota fl)
Social media cannot be a good learning and growth tool for schools. Social media is what distracts students from learning and doing work. It also can cause a child to feel like they shouldn’t be in the world because people tend to say negative things about one another online. Social media is part of the reason why bad in this world are happening now and it’s not right.
Evelyn (Booker High Sarasota FL)
I think that schools should be adaptable to the world their students live in. This includes social media. Using apps such as YouTube or TikTok in schools can help make the information easier to understand and can help the teachers connect with their students because they understand their hobbies and interests.

The app TikTok is a great way to promote student learning and growth. Although social media has many negative aspects to it, it also has its benefits. On the app, you get to make or watch 15-60 seconds long videos of literally anything. One great aspect of TikTok, is that you can express yourself by creating a TikTok video. You can post about you dancing, singing, going through heartbreak, solving a math equation, doing a magic trick, showing off your outfit for school, lip-syncing, and many more. Nowadays, teachers incorporate technology in classrooms to aid better education. TikTok users often watch TikToks(videos) due to the entertainment it provides. Thus, if teachers utilize TikTok as a learning platform, students will be more engaged in the lesson. For example, a teacher will educate his/her students about the lesson in the classroom. The teacher can make the students reflect what they learned about by making them do a TikTok video about what they learned. In addition, the teacher can add a compromise to get the students even more excited to include themselves in the activity. Using this app can promote student growth by allowing the students to share their creativity through their videos. Creativity plays a key role in the student's emotional expression. It helps them to be innovative and it also boosts their problem solving skills. In conclusion, TikTok serves as a great learning platform. It helps the students become more interested in learning.

Social media is a very cruel and un-motivating place, in today's society, if anything you do in social media Is not perfect, then it could be seen as weird, not cool, and cringy. There have been a lot of instances where people tried to create something good for the environment, such as vegans, vegans are people who don't eat meat, some examples of how veganism helps the environment is that they help combat world hunger, a lot of the world's greens arent even being eaten by humans, another example would be conserving water, vegans help to conserve because it takes 100 to 200 times more water to make a pound of beef then to make plant foods. But through social media, people who bragged about being vegan made it "cringey" and "annoying." So what I'm saying is that if people want to use social media for the greater good, then it has to be done right. I think my school is doing a great job without social media to play into my work, but I am happy to incorporate good deeds with my school and my social media if that day comes.

Tiktok is a social media app that young and old people use to create and share videos. Using Tiktok is a great way to meet new people and to connect with friends. It is also a net positive app that you can use to express yourself through dancing, acting, and lip-syncing to a variety of people who has the similar interests as you do. From personal experience, everytime my friends would create a Tiktok video, I would see them having fun, and would invite people to join in with them. Some even made friends with people from different schools. Although social media is viewed as an interference with learning, we now live in a generation that uses social media. We should take advatage of it to make learning more effective and easier.

Since most students interact with social media nearly at all times, schools taking advantage of social media is a clear opportunity to get students engaged. Most schools have already set up some social media pages that are mainly used for updates, and that’s a great idea. However, most schools have created Facebook pages while Facebook’s popularity is slowly declining. If schools were to take advantage of a platform which is constantly on the rise, such as Twitter, updates and engagement would reach more students. In this school, one of the counselors created a Twitter account initially to post updates about what is going on in school and what he would do for students. However, it quickly grew into something much more. This counselor engaged with each student who would reply to his tweets, sometimes even making jokes with him. Each day he spoke of positive things and preached words of wisdom to whoever was following him or browsing his profile page. By engaging with his students, more of them started seeing him and tried to get closer to him. With his professional updates paired with humorous banter and positive remarks, most students naturally grew close to the counselor they have barely spoken to during their actual school time. Besides the obvious benefit of news being updates on social media, another plus would be the ability students would have to just message a school’s social media page if they have any questions.
Alvin (CNMI)
Yes, I am familiar with TikTok an app that most young and old people use. I think TikTok is an app that creates social bonds between people all around the world no matter where you are just by writing down a comment everyone in the app can see your comment. Compared to other social media TikTok can let all the people around the world express their idea of the video but other social media can't. From my personal experience of using Tiktok, I saw many kinds of videos that are helpful for me such as food receipts, tips to get a good job and things to be careful when going to college but from using other social media I don't see that much benefit. But still, the app also contains negative things but just not that much compared to the positive things.

My thoughts on TikTok is that it's a great way to express yourself, be creative, and learn from other people while using the app. They can get ideas from others and try and come up with something new as a way to express their creativity. Personally, I think that TikTok is net positive. Through personal experience, people are very supportive and encouraging. Not only can you like and support each user, but you can comment and share your own ideas. With the use of TikTok, students are able to go on and express themselves, while having fun. People go on the app to laugh with each other and enjoy themselves.

With society and the world progressing day by day, educational systems should work to do the same. Teachers should use the advantage of social media platforms to better connect with their students. Students tend to use their electronics during class, so why not instead of taking it away, you give them something to engage with, something they are knowledgeable of and comfortable with, their electronics devices. This provides them with a more familiar environment that captures their attention and piques their interests. Although I am open to new ways of learning, I am perfectly satisfied with how I am learning. Social platforms, such as TikTok are just more ways to better communicate and express ourselves with one another.

Although social media may have a negative impact on people, schools and teachers should take better advantage of social media to engage with students. As new technologies develop, social media has evolved immensely over the past few years, and it quickly became the main source of communication in society. Today, many people, including students, teachers, and schools, rely on social media to reach out to one another. My school, in particular, uses social media such as FaceBook to interact with students and parents. Updating weekly news, reminders, and important notices allow students as well as parents to engage easily with the school and the various events. Since our school uses social media, it benefits both parents and students not only because it provides information, but it also provides a more efficient way to communicate and engage with the school. In conclusion, social media is often perceived as a negative influence on people; however, social media supports people by allowing them to interact with each other conveniently.

Schools and teachers should take advantage of social media to engage with students. Many teachers in my high school have been using social media as a tool for learning. They would often give us projects that require the use of social media; the involvement of social media in classrooms enables students to approach it with excitement and ease. Also, under close monitoring of a teacher, students will learn netiquette, an important practice that many young teens forget in their daily social networking. Although many dangers of social media are believed to have an impact in the learning environment, teachers must make use of the benefits, like convenience and effectiveness, and try to prevent such danger by educating them.

Social media should be more widely incorporated in our schools today as most students themselves use social media and the outreach on youth on many subjects would be easier to reach. Many schools today use technology in education much more than before as we are now capable of using what was once thought as a commodity in our everyday classrooms. Even with the "advancements" made to better our education, from my experience, the quality of work has not been changed. Schools still follow conventional learning methods and it is no surprise that some students don't follow suite to this as well as others as we live in a more fast paced society today. I enjoy the traditional assignments given but I know many others that are tired of the same old work. A good way to modernize a bit of education would be to implement some assignments into social media. TikTok, is well known and used by many people in my school and I know people who make TikToks for fun in their spare time. Teachers and other authority figures tend to criticize the amount of time that the youth of this generation spends looking at their phones but I would argue that they should use that to their advantage. If kids are stuck to their phone screens, why not make them a fun TikTok that mentions the chemical process of ionic bonding? Why not make a TikTok about the War of 1812? Students are heavily influenced by social media in the modern day, why not use the resources available to further education with a bit of fun?

The people of this new generation are currently living in the age of social media. We live in a time when every person is dependent on its use. Despite the flaws of social media, people, should never forget the fact that it is now mainly our generation’s way of communication, and schools should consider using this to their advantage. With the use of social media in schools, students can learn to collaborate with other students, remain updated with the outside world, reach out to students all over the world in a quick and easy way, and obtain resources and information. With its many beneficial uses, social media is inclined to have its negative effects. Unfortunately, with the use of social media, there is always the possibility that some students will not use it for educational purposes, and that beats the purpose of using social media to the school’s advantage. However, these negative effects can mostly be avoided with just the right amount of discipline and supervision. The challenge lies in defeating the disadvantages to use social media for its full, positive potential. But with all that aside, schools and teachers should use social media to engage with its students. In fact, my school does exactly that. My school utilizes social media apps, such as Facebook and Twitter, for the purpose of updating students and engaging with them. So far, there were no such issues that I have heard of, and social media remains to be utilized in my school.

As the years pass by, versions of technology become much more advanced and useful, as well as social media. Schools should be able to take advantage of the technology now because it would be a definite advantage for our education. If we were to use social media as part of studying, it would become a helpful tool because it would be beneficial towards our education, such as having better communication online and develop a more creative mindset. Furthermore, my school has a counselor who uses Twitter to spread confidence and inform us that “his door is always open if ever in need of help.” Moreover, by using Twitter it reaches out to other students who are not verbally expressive as the others and are still able to receive help. In conclusion, this proves the point that social media can be very valuable, depending on how the school uses it.

Though I am more of a traditional learner, I can see how social media in schools, particularly TikTok, would help other students. TikTok is a platform that has grown immensely popular with the public recently. From dance challenges to even personalities, they have gone absolutely viral in the internet. I have watched TikToks on YouTube and like them because of its similarity to the platform Vine. They should be integrated into some aspects of school. One way would be through educators making short funny clips about parts of the lesson. Students would be more engaged and might become more curious about the lesson, studying about it on their own. Another way it could be used is that students could be assigned a mini project where their group would make a TikTok relevant to what they are learning. I acknowledge the negatives of TikTok, however, I view its potential as a creative way to learn more significant.
Woofers (CNMI)
So far, our school has not incorporated TikTok into our academic studies rather it was a way to show school spirit. Social media has been a great advantage in our school system. One major advantage being that educational updates are accessible within our daily used apps. In our school, TikTok has been used as an advantage to unite students during our TikTok themed spirit week. Although it is evident that the app can bring a wide variety of students together, I prefer that would be the extent of it. TikTok has successfully connected with the teen audience proving it net positive. It should not be a used as an academic app. It should be reserved for pure teen entertainment. To me, Tiktok is oddly entertaining. It ranges from a whole lot of things; to surprisingly intricate makeovers and how tos to skits that are so unfunny that that makes it hilarious. The app is fun, weird, and a place where teens feel they express themselves that way. I wouldn't want to see a TikTok on how to solve for x in a right triangle on my feed. Why would we incorporate teachers and the school system in an app teens are comfortable showing that side of them? If we do so, we are basically invading our teens' space. It is one of the few social networks major organizations and school systems haven't indulged on yet and we should keep it at that.

Schools would benefit their students by including social media into their learning. Some teachers incorporate social medias like Facebook and Twitter as a way to submit work or as part of an assignment. This small inclusion of social media only brushes on the potential that it holds. If schools were to implement things like YouTube and TikTok more often, they could use humor to catch the interest of students. Students, teenagers especially, generally aren't interested in learning only through textbooks or lectures. School is not about enjoyment, of course, but when a student connects with a TikTok video that has educational context, it's more likely to stick with them. For example, watching a funny video from TikTok or YouTube would add extra information to the lesson and no matter how general it is, it's not harmful to students. Teens are already being exposed to these outlets at home, so bringing it into the school environment would feel familiar and accepted.

Actually, I am not familiar with the TikTok app. Moreover, I am not familiar with other social network services such as Facebook, Instagram, and etc. However, I had some negative prejudices about TikTok because many people have claimed that social media are addictive, which affects students negatively. After this article, however, I changed my mind a bit. I think TikTok can bring positive effects to the students if they use it appropriately. As mentioned in the article, students have used the app to explain a scientific theory, which is obviously a good and educational way to use the app positively. In my AP US History subject, for instance, we had to make a presentation about historical events, and we were able to present our work in any kind of format. In my class, one of my classmates made several TikTok videos for the task. Every audience liked them and said they were creative. Moreover, we could understand the events more precisely, having more interest in them through the videos. Also, in another class, my groupmates and I had to make a video, analyzing old literature for our project. In the beginning, we thought that making the video would be a pain because it was an end of a quarter project, which is difficult for most of the times. However, as more we do, we started to have more interest and put effort into the video. I think this was because the project was about making a video. If we had to do with a powerpoint or an essay, it wouldn't be fun as much as it was.

As high schoolers navigate through their adolescent life, one decides to venture and go far and beyond on what is expected on them. TikTok a social media platform is definitely something that allows adolescence to venture and portray vivid images of themselves or actors/actresses. Seeing the potentiality of students to open up their creative minds, prove that an engaging environment can ignite sparks within an individual. I would definitely love my school to incorporate a bit of TikTok in a group project as students are capable of creating quality content. It just takes time and effort to learn and understand that you are expressing yourself freely to the whole world using an amazing platform.

As we all know, TikTok is a platform to post various entertaining short videos. As a person who has done TikTok with friends, It is a very distracting app. I believe teachers should take advantage of social media because our population in the real world has included it to be a part of our routine; like checking emails, messages, or what’s on the news so you can’t really stop someone from using any social media unless it’s their decision. Teachers should use social media to engage with their students because not only will it make learning fun but also it isn’t always a bad thing, in fact, we tend to learn a lot more on the internet and be more informed with what’s happening in our world. If we didn’t have any social media and people didn’t have T.V. cables, internet, etc.. then some of us wouldn’t know about the forest fires, climate changes or difference ways to save our Earth. However, even though social media is good, it really depends on how students use the app; either good or bad. One of my teacher uses a reminder app and it basically informs his students about our work, if there’s anything due tomorrow or if we have an upcoming test/quizzes and personally, it really helps me because sometimes I get so busy that I forget things and so having this app on my phone is really beneficial. Therefore, there is no need to have this ‘boundary’ between the worlds because in end it will help build this strong relationship between students and teachers.
Simone Cronier (Wilmington, NC)
@Medina I definitely agree with your point that using certain social media apps to inform students can be very helpful! My teachers also use a Remind app to help keep us students informed as well as iMessage and Gmail to share information. It’s a great idea to embrace certain social media apps because while we go to school to learn, we don’t usually get taught on what’s currently happening in the world. I also agree with your statement on Tik Tok being distracting. While a club refers to any group that is focused on a single interest and Tik Tok club qualifies, creating it won’t provide any educational support for them past high school. Even if some of the teens are getting recognized, unless they’re considering becoming a professional, there’s not much else they can do past the short lived attention.

In the time of innovative technology and social networking, it goes without saying the positive outcomes that surface when using social media in class. Not only is it more convenient, it encourages engagement among students and the teacher and effectively promotes curriculum planning. Our school utilizes numerous social media platforms that serve as tools for more educational possibilities. For instance, YouTube is a productive application used in three of my classes—Biology, APUSH, AP Lang—that provides more in-depth educational information and thoroughly enhances our comprehension in context with our class agenda; we get to experience real-time dialogues ranging from scientists, researchers, journalists, historians, and many other experts, which enable us to connect to the rest of the world, considerably broadening our communication and knowledge. Additionally, the use of Edmodo allows us to communicate virtually with each other and be informed of upcoming assignments and due dates. Rather than resorting to outdated books and having to deal with the hassle of carrying pounds of books to and fro school, the use of social media results to being more feasible as it creates a developed curriculum plan by enhancing technological abilities, involvement of students in class, and builds relationships all while being presented with current events and information.

Schools should use social media as a learning tool. Students and teachers should make better use of tiktok to promote learning and promote communication. Most of the time students are occupied by social media, they are immersed in the world of the Internet. They are attracted to these new things on the Internet. They are tired of the unchanging and boring knowledge of textbooks. If can use other methods to make students learn better and efficiently, and there is nothing wrong. Like edmodo, teachers can post assignments and tests online, also can publish the textbook in PDF format, and teachers can share the link and see your homework schedule, which is a lot easier for us.

Social media is a tool that many people use for entertainment. Schools see social media as a distraction of doing their work and causing them to slack off. Our school does not allow students to use their phones during class because students would look at their feed such as Facebook and Instagram instead of working on their assignments. But there are some teachers that allow students to use social media for class but only for educational purposes. For example, my teacher assigned us to post on Facebook about how we appreciate each other as classmates. She assigned us this task because it allowed others to show what we are doing in class and share our thoughts and feelings to each other. Our school also uses social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as a tool to advertise and show how our school environment is like in a positive way. Our school would post information about how our school is and show the fun, exciting activities that we do. Social media also allows the teachers to get in touch with the students about any information about what is going on and other events that we will have in school. In conclusion, our school views social media as an opportunity and entertainment to share information about events and get in touch with students.

Does your school see social media as a tool for learning? Share how your school and teachers use social media as part of the education process? My school in particular does use a type of social media for learning. A platform called Edmodo allows students teachers connect to a virtual classroom where the teacher can posts blogs that contain information and instructions on assignments. An example of this would be the Ap Language Arts class that I'm apart of. Our teacher posts up assignments that we are required to work on. In the text she provides a nice uplifting note before listing our the directions. A calendar is also provided on the website to notify us about upcoming tests and deadlines in case we lose track of time. Our school as a whole does use social media, student leaders of each class (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior respectively) have set up class chats to provide updates on school events and news. The chats are also utilized by students to help collaborate with one another on school work, such as asking on work they missed out and, asking various questions to problems they don't understand. Overall, I think schools should use social media more with education. Social media is an easy way for everyone to share information and connect with one another in almost an instant.

Prompt: Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate-- for everyone’s sake? Social media has made it simpler for students to collaborate together. Facebook, snapchat, twitter, and many different platforms offers easier networking and an outlet for creativity. Social media is a powerful tool that schools and teachers should take a better advantage to engage with students. When used appropriately, it can effect students' education positively and can be successfully used for the teamwork. For example, if you are assigned to conduct research on a certain topic together with a group, it is easier to meet online and discuss the assignment together. On the other hand, my school allows us to take advantage of social media platforms when it comes to promoting events or sharing news. Teachers also create accounts to inform their students of any changes that wasn't said in class or to share lessons online. In addition, teachers encourage students to share ideas via a class blog which serves as the initial step in teaching students to develop writing and analytical skills. These are just some examples of how using online technologies the right way makes for a successful education pursuits.

I am quite familiar with the app, TikTok, due to its popularity. TikTok wasn't popular as it is currently when it was still Musical.ly. When Musical.ly was updated to TikTok, many people enjoyed it more, due to the abundance of video effects. I do not use TikTok, but I know many who does. Although TikTok may be entertaining and fun for creating videos, TikTok and education should be separated. When researching a topic that isn't related to social media content, we use Google. For example, in my AP Psychology class, we had to research the origins of slavery on Google, since we cannot use TikTok or Twitter to obtain information. Social Media is known for its self-satisfaction, informative details, and communication. Bringing in social media in school can cause cyber-bullying, including the invasion of privacy. A student could be filmed or photographed without consent, which will make the individual become uncomfortable. Many people might say that teachers use social media to interact with their students. However, many teachers and staff utilize social media because students scroll through their social media more than they check their emails. Teachers and the school staff use social media to spread information about the storms, holidays, spirit week, and any other upcoming events. This concludes that social media is more known for communicating with others rather than using it as a tool for education.

Every high school student is now very much familiar with TikTok. My take on TikTok is it's an amazing way for anyone and everyone to have fun, share their creativity, and learn from each other. In my take I think TikTok is very much net positive. From my experience on many hours on the app. People are supportive and open with each other within the app. Everyone has their own ideas to share and take in with open minds. Fellow students and like minded people laugh and smile together sharing a bit of themselves with each other through the power of the app.

Though I am more of a traditional learner, I can see how social media, particularly TikTok, would help other students.
Peppa (CNMI)
I have never downloaded the official TikTok app, however I have seen TikTok compilations through other sources and I believe that it, along with other social media apps such as Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, are excellent sources for entertainment and killing time. It’s also a great way for people, especially teenagers, to show off their interests, talents, and creativity in 15 to 60 second clips. Although there are a few educational clips that can be found throughout the app, I believe that its use would mainly be for entertainment purposes, not for academics. TikTok has the power to inspire insecure individuals to come out of their shell and participate in the many trending activities that it has to offer, ironically, like other forms of social media, there would be many cases of cyber bullying that discourage others to continue doing TikTok videos. Just like many other social media apps, there will be some kind of drama that will occur and it’s best that we do not bring this into the learning environment. We shouldn’t have TikTok be incorporated into the classroom and have if affect our learning style because it would only cause a distraction for the students; they won’t be able to focus on the task at hand. In short, TikTok is a great app for entertainment, but it should be kept away from the learning environment.
Kate (CNMI)
Tik Tok has recently become a popular app that most of the teenagers are using during their free time. In the article "High Schools to Tik Tok: We're Catching Feelings", a student addicted to Tik Tok is introduced. Although he claims that it didn't interrupt his life, it could be a serious problem for his future. Any addiction, including gaming addiction and the common social media addiction, is equivalent to smoke addiction. You just can't stop. The situation is especially serious because he is a sixteen-year-old who should be getting ready for the SATs. It would be very unfortunate if a student couldn't make it to an exceptional college for temporary entertainment. Considering all the factors of using Tik Tok in school, Tik Tok is net negative. Allowing students to use Tik Tok and other social media would merely give the students an excuse to use Tik Tok even more during school. We mustn't forget that the purpose of a school is primarily to study and prepare for the hard path we must take to succeed. Although the idea of using Tik Tok would appeal to many students and even teachers, it would only serve as a distraction for students later on.

As a teenager who is involved and updated on social media, I am familiar with Tiktok. I have seen Tiktok videos on Twitter, but never once used the app before. It is known for many individual's creative skills and performances. Furthermore, it is for uploading short videos of one's skit, dance, meme, and talent. It states that teachers from many schools view Tiktok culture as a net positive, but I, myself, disagree. Tiktok is where anyone can interact by sharing messages and posting videos. However, it develops concerns for our society's safety. Those who are quite young can sign in without adult supervision.Yet once they do, their personal information can be revealed. Instead of the business making our environment positive, it is doing the opposite by making it more dangerous and causing its people to be further cautious. Tiktok is popularly increasing and globally spreading throughout the world. Some are also addicted to the app, which is not good when being utilized for most of their time. It may be entertaining and enjoyable for them, but it can also stop or keep them from doing important things.
Lottie (CNMI)
Social media and school should not be mixed. To begin with, most people who use social media do not accurately portray themselves. They are usually portraying the top tier version of themself; prettier, smarter, cooler, you name it. There are many cases of where people become so involved in their online lives and aliases that they lose sight of who they are as people. Real humans who have flaws and quirks. Education is vital to humans, and especially younger people. They are more easily impressionable and can fall into the facade of having a perfect like from the media that they consume. Also; humor can be used for education without involving social media. So can anything! There is absolutely no need for social media to become involved with the current status of the education system.
Delaney Daughtridge (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Lottie It’s not as much about adding humor to a lesson, I think it’s more about trying to get students interested and involved. If you put some jokes or a skit into a lesson students will just think it’s cheesy and dumb, but when you incorporate something that they already enjoy and use then that could spark their interest.

In an era where communications and technology are continuously growing, social media has become a part of virtually everyone’s daily life. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and more recently, Tiktok, have been just a few of the most popular forms of social media. As someone who is exposed to these apps daily, I can see their appeals. Tiktok is a growing social media platform and I have already seen good and bad come from it. It is very easy to have the content you make become viral, but it may not always be a good thing. Many creators have experienced backlash from content they have made. Although there have been a few cases of that happening, Tiktok has taught many people useful tips and tricks. Along with the growing audience, more and more people are creating their own original videos to post, including doctors and dentists. Tiktok can be a very useful platform when used in the right ways. If it were to be incorporated in schools, there should be guidelines on how it is to be used to prevent anyone from abusing it. Teachers and others can use the platform to connect with students whether it be a serious video or one with a more comedic tone. But it is always important to keep in mind what you post. What goes on the Internet can stay there for a very long time.

I learned about TikTok about 5 years ago, back when it still had the name Musical.ly. I can attest to the statements made in the article about the app being very addicting, spending about 1-2 hours everyday just at the app's "For you" page. Although being described in the article as having a "net positive effect", I have not seen that much change since the app's breakout success. A great example of this would be the "#savetheturtles" that came from countless videos of people making fun of a certain type of girl who's lifestyle revolves around scrunchies, hyrdoflasks, and metal straws, more commonly known as a VSCO Girl. While having a large number of people constantly repeating the phrase "#savetheturtles", not much improvement has been put in to actually trying to preserve the turtle species'. While it being a good way to relieve stress and unwind, TikTok has not had a major effect when it comes to raising awareness on important issues in today's society.

Prompt: Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate-- for everyone’s sake? Schools should be encouraged to engage with their students through social media. According to Ms. Gordon of West Orange High School she states, “ I think you just have to engage with the students in whatever they’re interested in,” she likes how the app has unlocked creativity and authenticity in the students.” When students choose to procrastinate, they turn to social media as a source of comfort and entertainment. Incorporating this so called “distraction” as a learning tool allows students to be more attentive and interested in what they’re learning. It allows students to be more positively involved with one another and create new and stronger friendships, praising each other and increasing one another’s self-esteem. Social media opens doors for unity, teamwork, creativity, confidence, and acceptance of diversity; which are essential to a school environment. For that reason, I wish my school considered the option of using social media as a learning procedure.

(Prompt#3) What makes teachers think positively of TikTok? Maybe it's because of the variety of topics you could explore, or the short but entertaining clips that you could watch in a minute? But no, it's not just that. It's the connection all TikTok users share. I am familiar with the app, only because the platform was used for online "wars", like the Gamers vs. Furries war, or the videogame platform war, where console and even mobile gamers fought for which platform was best. TikTok was the best place for these wars, and I'll tell you why soon. Of course overtime, the app got popular. From what I've heard, Tiktok "replaced" Vine, which is also a social media platform that had short clips as its content. But TikTok is different from Vine because of its collaborative or duo video feature. With it combined with short videos, the possibilities are endless. I've seen people duo with another clip to change it entirely, like a sad clip with another of someone making harmless fun out of it, making it comedy. People can also cooperate or sync with each other in a dance. What's also unique about it is that, whenever you do a duet, you connect with them with your own personal interpretation. You get to step out of your comfort zone by showing yourself to the world, whether it be in your classroom, your room, or even at work. You can even wear your pajamas! The feeling is the same as introducing yourself to someone, and immediately you are accepted because you are absolutely not alone.

Schools and teachers should use tiktok as a way to attract students. It has become the norm to follow new trends, and tiktok being a huge trend has gained much popularity from the student body. Tiktok allows for kids and teens to express themselves in the best ways possible. The most popular tiktoks happen to be the weird and truthful ones. Such as pouring a bunch of water in a sink and saying what you love the most about something or someone. Or looking normal three seconds in, and drastically changing your outfit and attitude to express how unique you really are. I guess being weird and unique is the new trend, and Tiktok has made way for students to be just that. With its newfound and growing popularity amongst students, it would be a great way to connect with them. Adjusting the way schools and teachers teach (to a student's liking) wouldn't be such a bad idea. It is after all, the students who take in the lessons and information and decide what to do with it. So why not do it in a way that would be fun and easy for students to access?  Schools and teachers should make use of Tiktok's popularity because study guides or a physics lesson might just be the new trend on everyone's "for you" page.

I am very familiar with the TikTok app as my sister does tiktok almost everywhere we go. I personally don’t understand the whole point of tiktok but it’s pretty entertaining. Some accounts spread positive energy on TikTok while the rest of the tiktok population often does the most for clout.

Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? Firstly, TikTok is a social media platform that gives you the ability to take video clips of anything and post them online for the public to see. There are a plethora of use to this app, from informing to entertaining the audience. Knowing the fact that it has the function of spreading information, it is essentially possible for schools and teachers to manipulate this opportunity and use it as an asset for educational purposes. In fact, certain schools are already advocating the use of this app to further support education. In terms of statistics, Sachin Sharma who is a director of Sales and Partnerships of TikTok claimed that “In recent months, more than 10 million educational videos have been created and shared on TikTok, where they have garnered more than 48 billion views.” This app‘s ability to proliferate exposure of educational videos can promote certain engagement with the fellow students. I personally think that my school should certainly continue to use social media to engage with the many students. The spread of news and being informed of any changes relating to school events are really important. These two worlds should definitely be together because of the convenient capabilities.

Response to prompt #3 ikTok is a very popular app most especially among the youth. Although the article states that teachers view TikTok as a "net positive", it has an abundance of negative aspects creating a toxic environment so it is not a net positive. Some people are very expressive that there are no limits to the content they post. A lot of content within TikTok is explicit, according to Ida Lassesen, "One harmful effect of Tik Tok is that there are inappropriate and dangerous content in some videos which make them unsuitable for younger children...videos featuring simulations of sexual acts, self-harm and even a dead body were found on the app." I also witnessed vaping which may encourage other people to be influenced to think that doing these frivolous acts will make them cool. These dangerous impacts outweigh the benefits as the fun of TikTok does not excuse the dangers that come with it. Privacy is also a lose subject in TikTok. According to Karen Zhang, “investigation found hundreds of Hong Kong children as young as nine exposing their identities on the platform”. Young children put themselves in a dangerous position because of TikTok as their privacy is almost nonexistent. In conclusion, I don’t think TikTok will be a very effective tool in the classroom as it will require students to be involved and exposed to these ugly truths in which students should also very mindful with the content they post, especially if they are deeply involved in social media.

I am very familiar with the app TIkTok. It can be fun and entertaining but is a major distraction from work. Sometimes, I am doing work and want a break. Occasionally I will open TikTok and scroll through. However, what was intended to be a short 5 minute break quickly became an hour long. I personally only partially agree with the view that TikTok culture is overally positive. While it may seem good for students, in reality there are still major issues about using social media as part of the school environment. Students can easily get sucked in and distracted from their work.
Hana (CNMI)
Social media shouldn't be used by teachers to engage with students. Although it can be very engaging, schools should be an environment in which students are learning. Social media in school can be very distracting and can be an interruption during class time. As a High School student, I understand the constant urge to use phones to get updated with gossip and news/drama. Every day, I see students around the school in the halls using their phones for social media. If schools use it to engage with students, not only will we be more distracted, but we will also be open to cyberbullying, unsuitable content and will lack face-to-face communication with each other. Many things could happen in such circumstances. Recently, a very optimistic counselor at my school got a hate account made on twitter. This account stated such things like, "This person should die." and "I freaking hate this dude." on its page. With this as an example, there are endless possible situations that may happen to a student on social media. Therefore, we need to keep in mind that even though social media has its positive effects on students, the negative ones are too severe to ignore.

TikTok is an immensely popular app that allows its users to post and view short videos; the videos range from a variety of genres from comedic to theatrical. This past year, the app’s popularity has skyrocketed and has transformed into a mainstream app. It has become so well known that my high school dedicated an entire day in spirit week to dressing up as popular TikTok stereotypes, I was one of the hundreds of students that participated. Being an avid social media user, I have been familiar with TikTok for years and first knew of it when it was known as Musical.ly. I am embarrassed to say that I, similar to the students in the article, have been sucked into the addictive atmosphere of TikTok. The videos on the app, as short as they may be, are entertaining. There is something so enjoyable and enticing about the videos that are posted. It’s diversity, in terms of content, makes the app an endless source of entertainment. You can open the app to a video compilation of someone’s outfits throughout the week but somehow end up watching numerous Minecraft tutorials you will never utilize. Many of the app’s videos exhibit the talent of the users; videos that showcase artistic and musical skills have been known to become viral. Simply put, the app houses a plethora of videos that encourage the use of creativity and individuality. Because of its promotion of one's imagination and abilities, I agree that TikTok is net positive and is an amusing form of entertainment.
Carl (California)
I am very familiar with the TikTok app. I see it as a way for people to express themselves in short videos. At times, I find it cringy but it makes me laugh. I think that "net positivity" means that it spreads positivity. If that is the case, then yeah I can agree with it. According to the article, the "TikTok club" seems to really enjoy it.
Jay (CNMI)
I spend a good amount of hours on Tik Tok, just scrolling through the "For You" page, and although it can be distracting at times, I won't lie that it hasn't taught me any thing about the everyday life. I've learned so many things about how to take notes and the best websites to go to for to research. I'd say that it's resourceful, not to mention really entertaining. In the school context though, social media definitely has a negative connotation to it because of the amount of bullies and fake news it has, but I genuinely believe that if teachers could find a way to incorporate these social media apps, especially Tik Tok, to everyday lessons, classes would be more interesting. Not only do these social medias help educate at an extent, but it also gives us an easier way to stay connected with each other. I can shamefully say the amount of times people on social media has helped me remember that I have an assignment due at 11:59 pm. Generation Z is filled with children who go to social medias on their phones almost everyday of every hour. Teachers should take advantage of that and make what we, children, were practically raised to do, post or watch about it in social media.

New technology and apps are ever-evolving in this modern era, and with the younger generations being captivated to the new technology, education needs to be spiced up to keep their attention. Social media is a familiar tool for young students, and when used properly, you may engage their interests in the subject. Tiktok can be most helpful and useful for short skits. The skit itself will be more interesting, combined with the music and film work, it will most likely successfully capture the attention of the audiences, thus having them engaged in the topic. I wished that my school used Tiktok as a learning tool. Being able to use an app to make a short presentation on the topic will not only be fun to do but also engross my short attention span into the presentation. Back in 5th grade, we had to make a short iMovie to present a short poem with vocal tones, there is not much of a difference with using Tiktok instead. I don’t agree that the two worlds should be separated, but I think it would be best to draw a line from educational to entertainment. Personal Tiktoks should be done outside of class time to maintain a learning environment, but when they are being used for educational purposes, such as making a skit, classroom learning will be a success. If teachers understand that students need a different learning environment from what they were brought up to, learning will not only be engaging but also fun.

TikTok has definitely grown to be viral and although I am not a big social media person, I have run into TikTok because how popular it became. The few TikTok videos I have seen are definitely entertaining and the platform does show huge potential, especially with young adults. I definitely view as a more positive thing, where teenagers around the world can view a wide variety of videos with amusing content. It can definitely grow to be a tool for education especially with younger audiences.
Mary Westendorff (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@dahydrane I personally use tik tok on a daily basis by just scrolling through my for you page(explore page). From what I have seen on the app and how addicting it is I do not believe it should be it should be mixed with our school basis. There are so many terrible things out there that people will put online for who knows what reason, tik tok is one of them. I totally see what you are saying by some of them are just all about spreading positive but I can tell you tik tok is not one. I have seen so many hate comments or terrible videos that should not be mixed in with our school and social lives inside school. Any social media platform gives anyone the chance to say or do anything behind any identity they want. When you put yourself out there anyone can reach you if they really tried hard enough and some people not in a nice way. Everyone has a different perspective on this topic but I believe that if you mix social media and school you could end up with more negative energy than positive.

Using social media is a great way to engage with students, and should be used as an advantage by teachers and schools. Because believe it or not, social media is here to stay. It can be a benefit when getting every ones involvement in learning by utilizing social media that piques the students interest. By doing so, the students are for sure going to pay close attention to the class discussions and so on. And hey who knows, they might even participate too. Not all apps on social media are used just for personal entertainment. For instance, Facebook has a classroom page that is managed by the teacher. It allows the teacher to post homework assignments, share updates, changes, and more. Another case is Edmodo. In this very present, my teacher uses Edmodo to assign our homework, projects, and to notify us on our upcoming classwork, test, and quizzes. In conclusion, social media does benefit greatly for both the teachers and students because it provides ways to expand and discover new educational resources. Basically, I don't have to wish for my school to take advantage of social media because they have already established that since.

As a teen in "generation z," I am very much familiar with Tik Tok. The app was formerly known as "Musical.ly" and since then, it has skyrocketed into what it is now. In my opinion, Tik Tok is a mix of good and bad. The content can either be helpful, comedic, or something completely miscellaneous. The people on the app can be quite degrading; however, some can be really encouraging as well. Personally, I do think that Tik Tok should not be involved with school. Although, to some it may be helpful, to many the app could just be a distraction. Instagram and Snapchat already do play a big role in distracting students at the moment. What more an app that's so overly popular. School's should refrain from encouraging students to use Tik Tok as a way to promote education.

TikTok is an app where interesting and unique special effects are used to make a short film. The film are usually forms of entertainment and getting recognized. The app is also very easy to navigate and a "short cut" to create your own short film. There are many positive things about TikTok and many negatives as well. TikTok allow students to express themselves through making videos. They have fun during the process and also entertain others. Some downfalls are TikTok are getting addicted to the app, wasting time in the process, using it to make fun of other people and beliefs, and many parents are worried about inappropiate content on TikTok and the exposure of some personal information. Though TikTok can be a fun and useful app, it can also be harmful for teens and kids to be using it.

Educations and the methods to educate are always and forever changing. Social media shouldn't be inhibiting education instead it should be used to incite it. Social media is a means to an end, some teachers might find it hard to relate to students and vice versa. This might be due to age, authority problems, or the new waves of sub cultures appearing. Social media can used as a middle ground to help understand each other even if we won't ever. This is something we should take advantage of (this new trend) as an instrument to reinforce the lessons thought in the education system, while making it more relatable to the ones being thought the lesson.
Matthew Luhrsen (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Pseudonym You say that this could be a gateway to understanding each other but I think that this will only bring more separation. This would be because of the different views we already have a joke to kids may mean something completely different to an adult. One time when my mom sent a thanks to one of her friends the friend response was np to a kid that mean no problem but to my mom this meant no. She was very upset by this thinking this person was denying her tanks and think they were better. Also if social media was brought to schools then kids would be on their phones a lot more and not learning. This is what schools are trying to stop and this would only give a child an excuse to use it more.

As a user of Tiktok, I love the app. It helps not only to make someone laugh but also give educational information. My school is somewhat iffy about using social media. I, myself believes that social media is a huge distraction and could cause someones grade to drop. I have a classmate who is always on this social media site called Amino, she is always distracted by replying to someone or looking at posts there to the point where she is way behind in her works. I think teachers should use social media but only for educational purposes like finding informative videos and many more. On Tiktok, I saw a video where this girl explained this algebraic equation and giving a better and simpler way to answer it which I am using right now. I guess you can use social media to your advantage in classrooms as a way to relate and interact with the students more but other than that it would be better to separate it. Tiktok is a net positive due to how much fun and exciting it could be but also negative if it gets way out of hand which may include offensive stuff and cyber bullying. If my school were to use Tiktok, i feel like it should be like helpful tips or info they can share to other would be really great. The more you see and hear, the more you learn!

Using TikTok come with both negative effect and a positive effect, it has more positive out come with a little negative. It is very fun that it will grab your attention for a very long period of time, you will use your time to do homework for watching it and the result will be you trying to catch up with you work in the late night. However, when you use it wisely, you can put in a lot of knowledge with the lesson from school when someone post it up in TikTok. When teachers or people that put up informative things, they will have to try to make it as fun as possible to grab the attention of the audience and by doing that the people that watch it will pay more attention. When they pay more attention, they will remember the lesson and that will help their academic learning.
Jessica (CNMI)
Correction: Using TikTok comes with both a negative effect and a positive effect, it has a more positive outcome with a little negative. It is very funny that it will grab your attention for a very long period of time, as from my experience as a TikTok user, I will use a lot of my time to watch the eye-catchy videos rather than seeing the educational video. The result will be doing my work late. The good effect will be that TikTok the funny video that combined with information of the lesson will become funny as well, I have experienced that and learned how to solve some math problems with the video. It will bring my attention and make me learn. At the same time, it will make me do my work late.

C.N.M.I.Oct. 28 As a TikTok user, whose only form of social media is TikTok, I can say that there are many things I’ve learned online than I would’ve in school. There are many accounts on social media that inform you on things like survival lessons, diy hacks, basic school knowledge, did you know facts, or even how to properly deal with your emotions. Social media can be effective when it comes to educational purposes, as long as it is being monitored by the school’s staff members. If it were not to be monitored, a possibility of bullying can happen within school as well as a toxic environment within students. Students may start to be competitive when it comes to followers and likes, many students may just remember their school years being bombarded with social media, and Bullying (cyber bullying) will spark within the school. Personally, I do not own any social media (other than TikTok) because I feel like it is a waste of time (which is my opinion so don’t come after me). I deleted all accounts because I wanted to take time to not only focus on my studies, but on myself and my loved ones. I started realizing that the whole world didn’t need to know where I was, who I was with, or what I did at anytime given. Staff members should make it their duty to give all students the best education they could get, if that includes using social media, then they should make that decision. As long as it is monitored, students should feel free to use it.

TikTok, the new social media craze. Although potentially harmful, it also brings the possibilities of good things occurring. It's an app that has the capability to inspire creativity in people and even connect diverse groups. It is understandable that TikTok would be seen as net positive considering it can create partnerships between groups of people who may not have talked otherwise, so they could create a viral video. TikTok influences creativity in people in order to get their full idea out in the span of 15 seconds to a minute. TikTok also has the ability to introduce new things such as, dances or cooking to teens in the form of a "trend" that would make them likely to try it out. The modern teen is, in a sense, social media crazy and when using social medias to gain information it is much easier for them to digest. Modern youngsters are accustomed to the format of social media so getting information in that same format would be a more easier way to understand things. TikTok is an app that has a lot of good potential when it comes to the youths of today, when used correctly.

Tik Tok is an app that has been exploding with popularity at my school and it seems like many students are obsessed with it. Even though Tik Tok has much positive feedback with students and teachers alike, it would be better if education and social media were kept separate. Various students and adults are addicted to a variety of social media platforms, and this can cause a lack of focus on the main task at hand, such as learning or even teaching. My school had a "Tik Tok Day" where students could dress up as a famous Tik Tok persona, and I noticed that my classmates were more worried about what they were going to wear rather than the lesson and homework that was assigned to us the day before. Students shouldn't have to worry about what others are going to think of them and students shouldn't have to be so critical of themselves just because of an app that is suddenly starting to go viral.

Social media can be seen as a good or bad thing. It all depends on the person and how they choose to use it. These days, almost every teenager spends their time on instagram, snapchat, twitter, tiktok, etc. I think that if schools incorporate social media as part of a learning/communicating tool, students won’t feel apathetic towards education. At my school, I think some teachers see social media as a way for us to learn and communicate with one another. Some teachers have social media accounts (even our counselors) and they share useful information like tips on how to prepare for the SAT, scholarships and schools we can look into, etc. I think it would be very useful due to the fact that teenagers are always online and if we see something on social media, it won’t be as boring as reading it on a xerox paper because we’re on our phones scrolling. Although there are many cons to schools using social media as a learning tool, it’s still something worth considering.
Riko (CNMI)
As a student, I believe that teachers should take advantage of social media for educational purposes and use them more often. Students nowadays are on social media almost all the time. Everyone has an account, and we use them every day. It would be the best tool for teachers to communicate with students. In fact, many of my teachers use some kind of social platform to communicate or make announcements to students. I think that this is very helpful and highly productive, since it's very convenient for both teachers and students. However, I disagree with using TikTok as a teaching tool. Though it would engage students, it could also be a cause of trouble. It may lead to bully, or it may cause students to have stalkers that were attracted by their videos. We should always be in mind that once something is posted in public, it enables anyone to see it. In conclusion, I believe that social media is a great way for teachers to engage with students, but not TikTok, because it's fraught with danger.

Schools and teachers should take more advantage of social media to engage students, because it will make the topics more relevant and easier to comprehend for the students. Students often talk about school related topics on social media; They make school related content that are shared and seen by hundreds and thousands of people. Everyday on various platforms, I see school related memes that helps me understand more about a topic more so than the time I spend in class. That is because these memes are made in a simple format to make deep comprehension easier, so that the audience can "get it" or understand the joke. Unlike the readings and lectures we go through in class, these memes are catered to be more relevant and engaging so the meme can become popular. I wish our school would use social media and memes to reinforce school topics, because it will make even complex topics simple and relevant.

Tik Tok is a great social platform for young teens and adults to share and express their creativity through short videos. Tik Tok culture is, as stated in the article, net positive for young people. Based on my personal experience, watching tik toks gave a boost to my creativity, catching trends and ideas from different people sharing various types of short videos. From dancing to comedy, it was always entertaining to use. Watching tik toks were one thing, but making one is so much greater. With my group of friends, we created a tik tok just for fun. Through that, it really brought us close together through laughter and excitement. I believe that Tik Tok is a great social platform that really brings people together to express themselves and share creativity through different trends and ideas, all around the world.

School and teachers should take better advantage of social media to engage with students. With the popularity of TikTok, it will bring more people to like it and students' learning will be extremely effective. Students are playful and they don't like the look of the boring textbook and the lesson on a plain white paper, with the happy environment that TikTok provided, they will be willing to watch the video even it is textbook related, but you just need to make it creative. When the video is fun, people will remember the message that it is trying to get to us, when people put in education information, the user will think that it is a chance for them to learn more, as for students they will watch it carefully and try to remember everything in the short video. When they remember that, it will help to build closer relationship between the teacher and students and they will be happy with learning lessons.

Because of the growing age of technology throughout the world, social media has never been so abundant, most notably within younger generations. Gonchar establishes in the article that groups of people, students and teachers alike, yearn for increased usage of internet platforms. Now, taking the rather “mature” ideas into account, do the adults present genuinely think incorporating these platforms is a good strategy or was it solely an excuse to fit in with today’s younger audience? Sure, many can make the argument that this statewide phenomenon has impacted in a more positive matter, but observation within my sample size says otherwise. Regularly, students turn to their pocket devices regardless of the situation, whether during class instruction or a student council meeting. The primary cause that succeeds pulling students into their net world rather than in their classrooms is the exact problem these individuals are wrongly defending. Schools do not need these pestering annoyances in classrooms. Flying blue birds, ghost silhouettes, and a letter in the alphabet does not accomplish anything but raise people out of their true learning box. Two worlds that exist in one space, so close yet far away from becoming a logical reality. For everyone’s sake, keep confined those not destined to link.

Tiktok can be used by schools and students in many different ways. One way how Tiktok can be used in schools is making videos to raise awareness. One example is students can make their own videos about how bullying is a huge problem in schools. Students can be very creative while making their skits and scenarios about bullying. These videos then are shared to other schools to raise awareness too. Another example how Tiktok can be used in schools is students can use this app to advertise. For example, a school sanctioned club is selling treats for fundraising, the students that are part of the club can make videos to inform other students that are in the same school that they are selling treats. There are many ways that the Tiktok app can be used if used correctly.

I think schools and teachers shouldn't use social media as a tool for learning. Social media or in this case TikTok might be a big distraction for the education and learning that is provided in schools. Students can easily disregard the actual education process and focus on the more entertaining social media part. TikTok in particular is a social media platform that provides less education opportunity compared to FaceBook or Youtube which can provide a wide spread of different educational videos. I do believe that social media has benefits in them but I think those two worlds should remain separate.

As a person born in the cyber generation better known as generation Z, I am well familiar with technology and social media. Almost everyone has a device ,in hand, and is very involved with the world through the screen. Every generation is brought into the age of high-tech of communication, social media, and constant connectivity, which becomes an important part of their life. Schools should begin or continue to use social media as a way to connect and inform their students because nowadays, everyone is using some sort of social media as a means of interaction. Schools should utilize social media for the student to have an easier, better, and faster access to information/examples, work, and updates. At my school, few of classes are involved with social media only through Edmodo. It is useful as a reminder of upcoming events and due dates of projects/homework. Education and social media should join forces to makes the lives of the students much simpler and productive.

TikTok is viewed as net positive because of its qualities, but there are many negative things to it. When I am bored, I'd watch it and I can say that I relate to a lot of videos; knowing that I relate to some videos and that some people go through the same things I do makes me feel better. Many people express themselves on this app, whether it is on personal issues, world issues, or things that aren't even problematic. Creativity is a huge thing on TikTok and many people dream of being famous. Because of that, they try hard to come up with creative content that people would like to see, so it builds up their creativity skills. TikTok also has a huge diversity between people, which is a good thing; however, some people take advantage of it and create cruel memes, which hurt many people and can cause mental issues depending on how a person copes with certain situations. One time, while watching a video, a person who was a little different and unique than everyone else expressed herself on the app to spread awareness. Instead of positive comments on her video, there were many cruel comments because of the way she was. Some people on the app don't really consider other people's feelings, which is harmful and can cause people to be insecure. All in all, TikTok is a great app to use and spread positive things, but there are some cons to using it, which is why everyone should be aware and careful with using social media.

TikTok is an social media app for people to create short videos that allows them to express their personalities through comedic and entertaining videos. After reading the article, schools and teachers should not take advantage of social media to engage with the students. In the article, the reporter states that "Ireland McTague, a 15-year-old sophomore at St. Agnes Academy in Texas, said she spends about 16 hours a week on the app, creating or consuming videos." Spending a substantial amount of time online can be a distraction to their academics and toxic to their health. The reporter also states that "And if kids aren’t filming themselves at school, they’re making jokes about school. One popular meme on the app mocks the class of 2023 (freshmen this year) for being cringey and trying too hard." With the use of social outlets in school can lead to bullying by harsh judgement and causing the lack of self-confidence. When I use social media, I find it to be entertaining with many creative and funny content. It has also allowed me to engage with people however, it has been a distraction to get assignments and other things done. TikTok and other social media apps are a great way for students to express themselves, however, social media should not be used in school because it will affect the students learning and growth.

Does your school see social media as a tool for learning? Share how your school and teachers use social media as part of the education process? Schools often require social media as a tool to teach students and are curious about new ones as well. However, using it isn't always like that. You see, students can often misuse social media as a reason to do something as they please. Something like this should be prevented and teachers should maintain students into focusing more on the subject itself, rather than wasting their time learning nothing. For example, students can misuse social media as a way to cyber bully others. Thus having the student's self-esteem lowered, as well as dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. In addition, schools are also aware about the term of cyber bullying, yet not that much students are willing to talk about what they're dealing with, and it depends on the schools that deal with cyber bullying along with the fact of misusing social media. My school in particular does happen to use a lot of social media, but only for learning purposes. In addition, my school is more focused onto making students enhance their learning more to be successful in college and isn't dealing with cyber bullying as of now, but we students should be grateful that our school is helping us for our future. Therefore, schools, as well as teachers, should be careful when letting students use social media and should monitor what students are doing.

When school learning combined with the use of social media, it creates a better effect on both the student' learning. TikTok is an APP that involves with great creativity, it share the fun that people sees, it is effective when you use TikTok for learning or spreading knowledge. It is an Internet generation that we have, we should do something that is more related with this trend, to make fun video that can just make the students remember what the lesson is about and slowly become liking the lesson and the way teacher teach. I wish that my school do this for our learning. People tend to remember things that they like and things that make them happy, laugh and sometime sad. With the great popularity of TikTok, it can bring more students to watch them and master the lesson.

Schools and teachers should take better advantage of social media to engage with students. Technology, in this age, has improved in huge ways. Overhauled variants of technology are being presented constantly. A great many people are presented to gadgets and other devices at an early age which makes having a cellphone, iPad, or PC a need in the family unit. Teenagers and grown-ups are hooked on social media applications like Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram and more. Social media is the earlier enthusiasm of numerous adolescents and grown-ups. Social media is a pattern now in light of the fact that numerous individuals are keen on it. Usually, individuals learn and see more when it includes something they are keen on. In my U.S History class a year ago, my teacher requested that we make memes based on historical events. A portion of my schoolmates at that point didn't generally do work, yet when my teacher gave that particular task, everybody shockingly did their work. This shows when a student is natural or keen on something, they will place exertion into it. Rather than having schools set up walls and borders for with regards to social media life and school work, they should set up a bridge to get them to cooperate.

Tiktok is a lip syncing app, although I don't use it I am familiar with it. Tiktoks are a way people can express themselves more and I'm all for it. However I dont think tiktok would be beneficial to schools. Kids would probably get distracted too easily and have a hard time learning.

There are many social media outlets out there including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and now the former Musical.ly now called Tiktok. Students nowadays especially in high school, are into social media whether if it's to post memes, pictures, or statuses to their friends and family. In my opinion, Social Media can be used as a tool for learning and growth, but at the same time shouldn't be used from extracurricular activities. It can be used as a tool for learning and growth like, if they were to analyze something such as a statement or status posted online, they can use it for their classes such as Language Arts or Psychology class to truly understand or feel, the certain tone on what they're saying. Another benefit is Students get to be much more closer to their teachers and staff, as students can be friends with their teachers and other staff and create a bond on which they post and message with each other. A bad thing about these social media outlets in Schools are that they take away the focus in students, as they will sometimes focus more on their social media pages than learning. I've seen and experienced myself when we use social media it's starts to get addicting and sometimes it will take the teacher to stop you. In conclusion I think that social media can be useful for learning and growth, but must be used with moderation to little times to learn in class, so students don't get addicted and pay attention.

Social media platforms being used for classrooms have been a recent "trend." Now the trend upped its game by introducing TikTok, formally musical.ly, a social media platform where people can lip-sync to songs, act as if they were in the song, or be goofy in general. The platform has now sky-rocketed recently, and now schools are promoting the use. While it's absolutely fine, preferred in my opinion, to have social media as an education tool, there has to be limits to what students use it for. Having Twitter or Instagram as a school news platform can keep students up to date with the latest news in school and out. Tiktok, I believe, should be kept separate from the platforms, as it can cause a distraction for students who are active in the app. Therefore, schools should use social media platforms to engage students, but there should be a boundary between what to use and what not.

Social media is the language of the youth. It's what everyone talks about and it is what everyone references to when in a conversation. Therefore, schools should take/learn to take better advantage of social media because of how much it matters in this day and age. The school I attend does use social media. We use social media to relay information through applications such as Instagram and Twitter. The information includes reminders about spirit week, information about scholarships, or any updates on school activities. Had my school not allowed us to use social media, I would have been missing out on great opportunities to be not only successful but to show my school spirit as well. My school already uses an abundant amount of social media therefore, I don't think we would need anymore. Social media and school shouldn't be separated because social media can be a very beneficial and effective way to learn. Personally, I've learned a multitude of tips and tricks from social media applications just like Tik Tok. I believe we can use social media in the classroom to make lessons more memorable. In conclusion, schools should not only take advantage of social media but to also incorporate it into some lessons to make them enjoyable.

As an avid user of social media, the idea of schools utilizing it for learning sounds amazing! There are many tools available on social media apps that can improve learning if used correctly. For example, my school has a Twitter account for every grade. Each grade's student officers have access to their year's accounts. Through these accounts, they tweet about upcoming meetings, events, school holidays, and so on. By seeing these tweets on our timelines without having to go on a separate app or website, it makes everything so much more convenient. Teachers could also take advantage of the story feature that most social media apps contain. They could post about homework reminders, tests to study for, and just about anything classroom related. Stories can also have quick quizzes on them, which could be a great way to refresh our memories on the lesson we learned once we get home. Most of my teachers use videos in their lessons during class, so why not do the same at home? TikTok could be used as a platform to post quick videos about the day's lesson. While scrolling through the app, I watched a chemistry teacher (@chemteacherphil) do a science experiment. It was super entertaining, and I learned a bit more about chemistry from it. His account shows a great way teachers could take advantage of the TikTok phenomenon, and I believe my school could take a few notes. Schools should take advantage of social media platforms like TikTok for education as it's fun and convenient.

The TikTok app encourages teenagers to make videos that promote creativity, humor, and Gen Z culture. And it's because of this that the teachers at West Orange High are correct in describing its cultural impact as "a net positive". I'm a high school student who, coincidentally, also happens to be a teenager. To a degree, TikToks have filled the empty hole that is Vine's legacy. When Vine was shut down in 2017, the social media conglomerate had also taken to its grave a format that it popularized. Tiktok took advantage of a platform that had already established its presence in the teenage market, Musical.ly, so naturally, it took off. Since then, my use of the app was solely dedicated to passing time, be it having fun with my friends or just to fill the void when I'm alone. I've used it for my history class project to portray the nuances and bring out the humor in historical events, from Columbus's landing in America, the homogenous culture of some colonies in the beginning of America's colonization, or to highlight the differences between enslaved people under the African Slave Trade and those under Europeans' Encomienda system. TikTok's privacy concerns are nowhere near as bad as some would make it out to be, so long as people are careful of what information they're giving out. If anything, TikTok's rise in popularity is only a reflection of an inevitable problem that complements the age of technology. TikTok acts more as a learning process than a worry.

Social media is a distraction school but, some social media platforms can be used to help. Some platforms such as Face Book and Instagram can help the student in some type of way. Other platforms such as Snapchat and TikTok truly is a distraction for students. These two applications exposes students to another's personal life and merely provides entertainment. Though it may seem TikTok and Snapchat promotes camaraderie and teamwork, it could also be seen as a place full of gossip and bullying. From personal experience, I've seen many people being questioned and criticized for making TikTok videos. In conclusion, I would say if we used social media in a responsible way it would be a practical tool for school.

Social media is a distraction school but, some social media platforms can be used to help. Some platforms such as Face Book and Instagram can help the student in some type of way. Tiktok has grown extremely relevant in people’s day-to-day life. The huge fan base the app has amassed has increased the possibilities of what the app can become. It fills the void that vine left and has given people the opportunity to become famous through another social media platform. It is similar to YouTube, in the sense that people are becoming increasingly famous by showing off their talents and humor through these short videos. The app really has provided another outlet for people to express themselves and will continue to make its mark on society.

TikTok is definitely a well known app and I'm fully aware of it. Although I don't create videos within the app, I do watch the videos that others posted from all around the world. However, TikTok is a net negative. In the article it states that a Spanish teacher at Fox Creek Highschool in South Caolina is hesitant about the app because she thinks that TikTok along with other social media apps feed bullying because students may record things that they shouldn't. TikTok is filled with humorous videos, but it may be offensive to some people which could cause people to start hating on the person who posted a video for fun. There is always hate somewhere on social media including TikTok which I believe shouldn't be apart of a lesson in school because some students may think that hating on a persons content on social media is right. Therefore, because of all the negativity on TikTok it isn't considered a net positive.

Schools and teachers should take advantage of social media to engage with students. Twitter is one of the social platforms used in MHS. The Twitter accounts that are run by student officers are mostly used in our school to inform the students about upcoming events and to post about the school's achievements and school spirit. However, a counselor from our school uses Twitter to inspire and connect with the students. Mr. T is a passionate counselor that loves his job and his students, which he constantly expresses on Twitter. He also responds to student's tweets with positivity and advice. Mr. T has inspired me with his tweets, but one tweet that stood out was this: "I hate the way I look. I think my cheeks are too round, my chin is disgusting, and my teeth? Gross. I can give you a million reasons why I hate my face, but you know what? This is who I am. I don't love all of me yet, but I am learning to love myself- and that's what matters." If schools and educators around the world used social media to engage with students, they might be able to inspire students and bring positivity to the social media world.

Just like in West Orange High School, Tiktok has been pretty well-known amongst the students of our school, particularly with the Freshmens. They even used this as a theme for our first pep rally on the month of September and also used it for spirit week. Whenever I see my friends use tiktok, they would always come across with academic related videos which in fact, a great way to promote student learning using this app. However, many are still more interested in those contents that are not necessary for school and immensely far from educating students. This is why I believe that Tiktok can be a good platform to use to promote learning, but it’s better if social media like this remains separated from our school life. Young people get influenced easily by their favorite creators. But what if these influencers are making fun videos but are actually bullying, brain-washing their viewers and producing nonsense stuff? In my opinion, this can be a distraction and worst student might possess this. As they get more into this app, doing and actually following these trends results to such questions like, “What do I really want and not?” It can lead to an Identity confusion. Because some just do things like this to be in trend and for people to like them. I can see us being better if we don’t bring this negative matters to school and it will be great to be free from tiktok.

TikTok is a social media platform that allows people to make short videos around 10 to 40 seconds doing whatever they feel like doing. Some videos consists of people singing or dancing to their favorite songs. To me TikTok culture is net positive. But it does have some negative aspects to it. TikTok is net positive because it allows people to express their creativity and talents with people across the world. It also allows people to make new friends and even start new trends. TikTok is a very net positive app overall.

Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? Social media can be an engaging and convenient way to interact with students. Nowadays, children and students have access to all the different types of social media there is, and are frequently on it. Like stated in the article, “...he loves how the app brings students from different friend groups together.” Social media creates new bonds and connections with people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. Teachers can benefit from this advantage. Getting to know one another can be difficult and challenging, so why not do it where many are comfortable? The article also states, “She likes how the app has unlocked creativity and authenticity in the students.” Social media can be a fun way to learn and can bring out and hone talents. Like in the article, the students benefited from the use of social media. In my school, I wish they allowed more use of social media within learning. Classroom participation will increase significantly, students will be excited to learn, and most of all, it would create a more comfortable, safe, and free environment, one where everyone would benefit from.

Are you familiar with TikTok, the app discussed in the article. What’s your take on it? The reporter states that “teachers at many schools say they view TikTok culture as a net positive.” What do you think? I'm currently a Junior in high school and live during an era in which social media platforms such as the mentioned app named "TikTok" is progressively rising in popularity. I am well aware of the app discussed in the article and I have no particular stance on whether or not educators should utilize social media for education purposes. Personally, Tiktok is just another one of those apps where people are able to share and connect with one another creatively. I neither dislike or appeal to TikTok as it is something that does not really interest me. As for my opinion regarding teachers using TikTok for education, I will say that there are benefits of using the app for school related purposes. Designing an assignment revolving around the requirement of using the app would make the lesson for more engaging and entertaining. Instead of students sitting at their desks doing conventional paperwork, they could be on their feet, brainstorming, creating, and moving around to make a simple educational 15 second skit for not only them, but for the classes's enjoyment. To recap I have no opinion on whether or not I like TikTok, though if educators can use the app to make assignments more enjoyable and interesting, I suggest they promote and encourage this type of learning style.

Are you familiar with TikTok, the app discussed in the article. What’s your take on it? The reporter states that “teachers at many schools say they view TikTok culture as a net positive.” What do you think? Yes, I am familiar with TikTok. Basically, TicTok is a "social media app where users post short funny videos, usually set to music, that is enjoying a surge in popularity among teenagers around the world and has been downloaded 1.4 billion times" TicTok, to me, is an app where many kids, teens, and even some adults make videos to be known and get famous for doing funny things, and to start a trend. A school in California has now made a "TicTok club" because of how famous it has gotten. Many teachers at schools say that TicTok culture as a net positive. For instance, the adviser, for the "TicTok club" in California, Michael Callahan said, "You see a lot more teamwork and camaraderie." TicTok in a teacher's perspective is that no matter the gender or race, kids from different "friend groups" come out of their shell to bond with one another in making dance videos, funny videos, etc. Overall, TicTok is an up and coming app that made lots of teens famous, but also made people blossom from an introvert to an outrovert.

PART 1, Prompt 3 I have known the app Tiktok back when it used to be called Musical.ly. The content on Musical.ly has never been my forte because everyone did the same thing; the Musical.ly users would lip sync to a song and do gestures that correlated to the beat or lyrics. The content remained the same when the app was renamed to Tiktok, but recently, the users have branched out from the lip syncing and started to do comedic videos. A few months ago, I had begun watching Tiktoks because I liked the humor in and behind the videos. Everyday, I watch Tiktok compilations on Youtube because it is more interesting than other Youtube videos. Tiktok is an amazing app that allows the users to be authentic, have job opportunities, and open to what they stand for. Noen Eubanks, an 18 year old from Georgia, is a famous Tiktoker. In an interview with Dazed Beauty, he states “The first TikTok I made was a joke that I sent to my brother. Then I thought, ‘OK I’m funny sometimes’, so I (uploaded the video to TikTok). A month later, I hop back on the app and was like ‘oh wow’ – I think I got around 100 views and 10 likes, and for me that was crazy. I was losing my mind because I had always tried to make it on YouTube – well, I say try, I would half try like most people do – but then I saw a little bit of progress (on TikTok) and thought I was onto something. So I just kept going…”

I am familiar with the app TikTok. I use it when I want to laugh or waste some time. Everybody that I know or is close to me uses it and we talk about trends and learn dances together. TikTok is a site where you can post short videos that is set around music or “sounds”. The popular TikTok’s end up in the “For you” page and if your video ends up there then it will probably get a lot of likes. The TikTok culture is net positive because it promotes creativity. Principle Gordon says “ She likes how the app has unlocked creativity and authenticity in the students”. Because of the app, the students are able to freely express themselves.

PART 2/2 Tiktok has allowed Eubanks do what he wanted to do; he wanted to be a star. It has also promoted Eubanks to be authentic because the viewers liked who he was. By being himself, Eubanks has gained 5 million followers on Tiktok and has become the face of Kyra TV, a company that consists of a Gen Z fanbase. This demonstrates how Tiktok has a positive impact on people when it comes to who they are as a person, what they believe in, and what they want to be.

There are many different social platforms that could easily become a major distraction in school, but there are ways it can be beneficial. Some things like TikTok and snapchat I don't believe would help schools, their purpose mainly being for lip-syncing and streaks, but things like Instagram and Facebook could be progressive in schools. Students may use them to stay updated and in the loop and they can be used for easier communication between teachers and students. I use FaceBook for my theatre classes and productions because it is an easy way to be in touch and it is good for my teachers when they have something last minute to say or if the school isn't in session but we need to know something. There are always ways the freedom of social media can be abused, but if used responsibly, it could be very useful.

In the perspective of a young sixteen year old, I believe that educators should welcome social media into classrooms. TikTok is an online app created by ByteDance to show case creativity from anyone no matter the age range. Moreover, it allows people to express and share their creativity no matter their technical skills. As a avid TikTok user, it allows me to stay connected in real time with my friends as we love to make TikTok videos. Furthermore, as a generation built on the foundation of the internet and easily accessible technology, social media apps are a great way to help students engage and interact with school related work through a fifteen to sixteen time interval. Although there are benefits to TikTok, I find TikTok net negative. Envision a one hundred fifty pound, brown skinned, brown eyed, individual who has glasses and acne scars, who has low self esteem watching a TikTok video with beautiful skinny girls in aesthetic outfits, who portray their "perfect life" through the filters available in the app. How do you think the individual would feel about themselves? TikTok is not only a good learning instrument, but provides a veil of superficiality among its users. Ergo, Tiktok is a learning positive, but net-negative social networking application.

Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? The TikTok app does indeed have a positive influence on many different people by giving them the freedom to post funny, crazy and random videos of themselves without the worry of judgement. But I worry that TikTok in some of its darker aspects may be a toxic environment. From the websites 'thecybersafetylady.com.au' and 'buzzfeednews.com', I have read that TikTok is a platform where kids are exposed to bullying, harassment, predatory actions. An example of bullying and harassment is users have been taking advantage of the 'duet' feature, a feature where users can post videos side-by-side to another users post, in order to send short TikToks that dictate self-harm, suicide and insults. Users have even used the comment sections and even private messages in order to send these hateful acts of bullying. I have also ready according to the websites previously mentioned that TikTok has limited options to report these harassers. One example is Asher Crane, 19 from Washington State who says that he receives many abusive videos and says that "It's difficult to report videos like that because the options about what you can and can't report are limited. I'm never sure what to report them for". In my conclusion, I believe that TikTok should be seperated from schools as it can be dangerous.

Tik Tok, the app that used to be known as "musical.ly" is soaring high popularity not only amongst teenagers, but also adults. This app lets you record yourself for 15 seconds and you can show the world whatever you might have interest on whether to: "Dance, sing and perform skits" (Lorenz; 5th paragraph, line 2). As someone who uses the app, to mainly watch and not create videos of myself, I really enjoy using this app and I find it helpful for me to appreciate the little things in life. Tik Tok should be implemented in schools because they bring lots of positive to little cons. Firstly, it gave me more confidence. Tik Tok brought confidence to myself. Watching how the users interact with their audience, I started talking to diverse people and not only relying and hanging with my own race; this act gave me a new, big and open perspective and how I had more friends. To continue with, it gave me new knowledge; for example, STEM subject is a high content for students to make jokes about. Elaborating more on this, is how they get a word from a STEM subject, for example, science; they incorporate dance and music, and skits, in order to make it entertaining. One popular example, is how @kadencane is using a Kardashian voice clip to lip-sync on it, and showed how the transport chain of a cell membrane acts a border to inspect polar molecules. This might sound boring, but when it's in Tik Tok, it adds flavor to a thing. In fact, I published a Tik Tok dedicated to New York Times. ;)

In my opinion, I believe schools should indeed take better advantage of social media in order to engage with their students. Social media plays an important role in every student's life. It would be easier and more convenient for students to access information that the teachers have provided and communicate via social media. With social media, teachers and students are connected to each other and can make good use of these platforms for the working of their education. The social media and education world should come together as it will also introduce technology to the classrooms, broadening the willingness to try new technologies that others may otherwise have been afraid to use.
Jackson Bruins (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
My school doesn’t have much involvement in social media. There is a small amount, such as social media accounts for clubs or sports, like a yearbook club or soccer team Instagram. I think it is quite interesting that some schools are taking a step further and using them for more, like a TikTok club. I think that using social media in this way could be very viable. It would probably spike the interest of teens because it is relatable to them. When it comes to TikTok, I see it as a positive use of social media that could be used for a club like drama club. Other uses of social media might be using Remind or Twitter to notify students or athletes quickly and reliably or using Instagram to share photos with students. I think that because of all these opportunities for social media to be used in the classroom that more schools should begin to use it.

As being a typical high schooler, I have a general understanding about the social media app, TikTok. I comprehend the hype and the social media trend that people aroused themselves with. TikTok is a social media platform where people all over the world can share their creativity and be able to express themselves throughout a 15 or 60 seconds video. The Tiktok culture is net-positive due to the fact that it allows and encourages people to share and express their characteristics and forms a unity between a huge diversity of different people. TikTok may have such a positive impact on our society; however, it includes some downfalls. As someone who watches TikTok for the hilarious and enjoyable videos, using the app could possibly get addicting based on a vary of people. Since I am a dancer I personally enjoy filming dances with friends for fun and watching dance videos. Although, Tiktok could be a destructive app to certain people as it could affect people's self esteem and confidence when it comes to constantly watching Tiktok videos almost everyday. With watching different genres of videos on the app and seeing many beautiful women or people who are amazingly talented can sometimes lead people to a negative outcome. Tiktok is just like any social media apps where people mostly open up to the internet with expressing their good and flawless side. Overall, Tiktok trends and videos are truly enjoyable and interesting, but it could set people to deal with some disadvantages.

I find TikTok as one of the great ways to publicly communicate, interact, or entertain yourself with others. In some ways, the app can be used in a negative way. However, it is positively used almost always: find friends, show your true self instead of hiding, etc. TikTok should be used to positively interconnect with the public. Back when the app was called Musical.ly I would often spend hours watching and posting funny, short clips of myself and other people. It had many downloads and was, sort of, trending at the moment. Although, after a few years or so, I infrequently used the app. I thought that it either started to get cringey or I was not feeling up for it, anymore, but I did find it positivley entertaning me. As years went by, Musical.ly changed its name to TikTok, and, still, it had many users and is trending now more than ever. Probably because of how funny the short clips are or how you can express how you really are without being judged. In the article, it mentions that teachers find the app as a net positive, which in some ways I agree. Its great to see how the app and its creators progressed; showing how social media can be used for education purposes, appropriate entertainment, and positive interactions.

As a high-school junior, I have participated in the same educational activities such as Jeopardy and Bingo since I was in the first grade. Although it does engage us, we do not carry the same excitement we cherished during our elementary years. We need activities that are more relevant to what the majority of us enjoy and are involved with, which is social media. Social media is a great way for teachers to engage students in their lessons, such as Twitter polls, TikTok challenges, or creating our own Youtube videos. For instance, our junior class has a Twitter account where they post important announcements regarding school activities, which I am thankful for as I am on Twitter almost every hour. Teachers can use social media in a similar concept, such as having us post daily stories on new information we have acquired during their lectures. We are incredibly familiar with the social media environment and will most likely be motivated to do social media relatd assignments. Although it opens the window to post inappropriate matter, it serves as an opportunity to learn and practice internet etiquette as well. It would be exciting to see more teachers apply social media in the classroom, and hopefully use it more at my own school as well!
Delaney Daughtridge (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I have the TikTok app on my phone and it’s definitely fun. It’s just a really casual app where people make jokes about memes or crazy things in their life. I’ve also seen people who post things that are a project or extra credit assignment. It’s an app that most people can figure out and utilize. I think using TikTok for assignments instead of FlipGrid or Vimeo is kinda cool. Letting people get notoriety just for doing their school work but in a creative way is a really good motivator. “Probably 20 people have gotten famous off random things.”. If you heard people at your school were getting famous you would probably want to do what they’re doing.

The learning styles of students vary among individuals. The more prominent and common ways are visual or verbal learning styles while the least common way is interpersonal. My school advocates and uses social media to promote interpersonal learning skills. Social media encourage students to reach out to others and so breaks the barriers between a student and his/her classmates or teachers. In a lot of my classes, I had to post a project on youtube or on facebook to share what I learned with the general public. By doing this, I had a diverse range of audience that would give me objective feedback. This helped me improve and do better in my future projects. Schools should take advantage of social media and endorse it more instead of trying to discard or separate it when it comes to education.
Lyle Blemmons (California)
I think that social media does provide opportunities for learning and growth because social media can help people work together. Social media gives the opportunity for people to bond. It depends if the person enjoys it. According to the article, the Ticktock club seems to enjoy it. Bullying can be a issue with social media. The article stated to "think twice before posting anything". People just gotta be careful about what they post.

Are you familiar with TikTok, the app discussed in the article. What’s your take on it? The reporter states that “teachers at many schools say they view TikTok culture as a net positive.” What do you think? I am familiar with TikTok due to the fact that it’s very popular or “trendy” at the moment. I think all things have negative effects just like TikTok but it has more positive impact than the negative ones. Tiktok is a net positive not just because how it shows creativity and other cool aspects but it can also be a way to spread knowledge to other people by making a video about something knowledgeable. It also displays how creative someone can be.

Teachers and schools should use social media as another form to engage with their students as it can enhance learning simply through the cyber network. With the assistance of social media, teachers can communicate virtually with their students such as online classes, online classrooms, and other sorts of school-related sites or apps. Fortunately, my school allows us to use the educational learning network, Edmodo, to communicate with our teachers about our work wherever and whenever. I am grateful to have Edmodo because whenever I miss a lesson, my teacher(s) provide the lessons in the online classroom so that I don’t miss out on any of my work. Therefore, we should be more open-minded to the fact that social media can provide an extra amount of help with our schools and can also provide students with the ability to gain helpful information.

Schools and teachers should take advantage of social media to engage with students. In the social media platform, TikTok, students have created small clips that correlate with subjects such as math, language arts, and history. As an example, my wonderfully creative classmates in the 4th period created a series of TikToks in which they reenacted their version of how trading in the Americas in the 1700s created tension between colonists and Native Americans. Although "cringe" is not avoidable, a little awkwardness would not affect the fact that allowing social media, specifically TikTok, in schools will not only make learning more fun and enjoyable, it would also provide a more engaging learning experience by providing a more open, versatile platform which students and teachers can enjoy.

Schools should take better advantage to social media to interact to students, because student really get attracted to apps that are usually popular. Interaction with the students should include fun activities and what makes the student want to come back. It would be even better that a teacher will make us learn in the process. I wouldn't say that i wish, but more like if a teacher ever makes us learn through social media, I wouldn't mind it. In my opinions, I rather keep them separated from each other. I'm those kind of students in fact, wants to separate the time for social media for my fun and desired choice, than rather using it when the time that I don't want to use it. I want to leave it in times that I will do things in my own and what i would do for fun with it, While, learning would be like leave it to school to do the job.

My school does not use social media as a tool for learning. But we do use Google Classroom, Edmodo, and Gmail. I agree that social media could be use in school. If we use it the right way I don't really see the problem in it. Just as Mr. Callahan said it can promote teamwork and camaraderie. It can also be a way for the students to express themselves. The students could also be creative with it by making skits, dancing and singing. Not just the students ,the teachers can also make class funner by using Tik Tok.

The Tiktok culture is a net positive because it promotes creativity and individuality in each student. It gives students a chance to express themselves without the fear of being judged. They can be their true selves. It is a very encouraging and inspiring app.

Tiktok is an app where people all over the world form lipsync, funny, and creative videos. I feel as though tiktok may be educational but sometimes have negative influences. It is a good way to form relationships and connect with the other human beings of this 4.543 billion year old earth. I started making tiktok videos at 2015 and believe me when I say it is fun, it is. Actually the name of Tiktok was so then called "Musical.ly" and changed since then. You can't just run away from social media, this the generation of technologies, more and more inventions will be created with technology. I agree with Collohan because he says that tiktok brings different people together and it is true. I've seen it with my own eyes, having the same interest and sharing a bond over creating and watching videos, fun. It is somewhat educational by providing us videos of survival hacks, and just creative thing I didn't even know. Therefore, I allow tiktok and support it because it is not harmful in any way, not unless you make it harmful yourself. It can be a positive environment by making it one.

I definitely am familiar with the app. I think that everyone's opinion on the app depends on if they are actually familiar with it. I spend quite a lot of time watching Tik Toks, and watching them. I think that creating Tik Toks can bring out the creativity in people. The app makes it easier to capture short yet meaningful clips of our lives. Creating and watching Tik Toks with my friends sure has created some bonds between us all. It is a great and fun way to interact with our peers near, and far, and have it digitally recorded for us to look back on in the future. In my opinion, the app is more net positive than negative. It allows us to be our weird-selves and express ourselves in ways we wouldn't dare to try on any other app. We all share our similarities and find out new ways we can all relate to each other, making everyone who is on the app feel like we are all the same. Tik Tok sends off a safe and comfortable bond between all the app users that you cannot find on any other app.

Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? or should the two worlds remain separate - for everyone's sake? This would be a beneficial way for students to feel more engaged in their studies. It said in the article that it "has been downloaded 1.4 billion times, according to SensorTower". I know from my experience that If I see a Tiktok post about something funny or interesting, I will definitely remember it. I believe that things that are funny or interesting causes a person to remember that certain topic. I wish that the school would do this for I can engage with my other classmates better and boost my self-confidence. The adviser to the west orange tiktok club stated, "“You see a lot more teamwork and camaraderie. and less — I don’t want to say bullying — but focus on individuals.”" Introverted people would boost their confidence to talk to other people. Although the TikTok culture is net-positive as it encourages both creativity and unity of people around the world, it still has its downsides as a user can become desperate to join the latest trend or become unproductive in completing tasks. As a person who watches TikTok videos on a daily basis, there has never been an instance where the famous application did not make me smile or laugh. From talented people singing a simple melody to students trying to make their crush fall in love with them, TikTok consists of a wonderful diversity. People are open to new things and even try “duets” with the original creators; therefore, promoting unity even though the users may be separated by thousands of miles. However, after trying to watch only one TikTok video during class time, I realized that this application will not be beneficial for my education. Anyone who has TikTok knows how addicting the app may be. Our minds just push us to keep scrolling as we easily become focused on interpreting the videos. In a classroom setting, the TikTok culture will be very disruptive as students are easily distracted by the entertaining app. Another disadvantage of the famous application is the trends that accompany it. The trends may be interesting, but I have seen individuals become desperate to be a part of all that they end up forsaking their other responsibilities in life. In conclusion, the TikTok culture is both pleasant and amusing, but people should be aware of their drawbacks.

TikTok is social media platform to express your thoughts in a variety of personalities and formats. TikTok has changed the media with the rather short videos of interest. You can create a video on a comedy ,you can make another one on fashion, and another about lip-syncing. This app has been getting really popular and compilations of these TikToks have been everywhere. There have been memes, fashion styles, and new interest with this app. Take it from a person who didn't know about the app till searching it up about a week ago. I put the mentioned above to say that something popular can a positive or it can be negative. Tiktok is a total positive. The producers of the videos express their faults and change it to entertainment or as relatable content.

My school sees Tik Tok as a distraction to the student's learning environment and could negatively impact their grades. It is understood from this article; that teachers use this social media platform to educate their students and help them engage more with the lesson, but more or fewer teachers won't be so open to the idea of using a social media platform to educate their students as it's not a traditional way of teaching. Although it can work out in some schools and can help them benefit from it, there will be other schools with different viewpoints about this topic; whether schools should use social media to help educate students. I'll use my school as an example, social media is a straightup distraction towards students as it can make a student lose a lot of their focus and slowly get sucked into the void of never-ending posts. And the use of social media in our learning environment is almost as close to a minimum depending on whether the topic mentions about social media or not. Occasionally some teachers would include the topic of social media to lead on the students into engaging with the activity and to prevent the students from getting bored. Basically social media in our school is seen as a distraction towards students that will negatively impact their grades and it's not very likely I'll see Tik Tok being used in educational learning anytime soon.

I think that people using social media to bond and learn is great, most people think that tiktok and other social media platforms only are made of gibberish videos that numb our mind. Though I cannot say that it doesn’t do that but what most people don’t see is these plate forms also talk about modern day issues, from how to tell when an relationship is toxic to how to keep yourself safe from human trafficking. I think it’s is also a good way to “engage students in whatever they’re interested in” because our old ways of notes and staring at a board waiting to absorb whatever your told to is getting old. It’s also a way to express yourself and show who you really are. Like the article said, some schools ban TikTok and as well other social media apps, but I really like how Mr.Callahan goes against most teachers and not only allows them to use it, integrates it into a daily lifestyle.
Matthew Luhrsen (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Social media in school can really be a balancing act because it's so open to what you want to do and you may be a good person but someone else on there may not. Then you have a bunch of weird, bad, and even racist things going around the school. In the article it talks about how Tik Tok is the app that is being approved for school and i think that this app is one of the better ones out there. This is because what can be made is kinda limited to things you can do with your body or draw but it's still not as open as like instagram. Personally I don't really think that this is a good idea for schools it will only promote the use of phones. As my coach at school says “stay away for social media it will only end in trouble” and to me i believe that this is true it will. At the same time they can really help someone learn and for my math class I have to use YouTube every day. Apps can be very helpful to learn but I don't think they should be used in school but only outside.

Tik Tok is an app where people can express themselves through countless varieties of characteristics and personalities.- both negative and positive. I greatly appreciate the fact that this app can allow others to put out whatever they please to and don't. An adviser of a Tik Tok club stated that "“You see a lot more teamwork and camaraderie,” he said, “and less — I don’t want to say bullying — but focus on individuals.” Which I do believe is true. However, I do not believe that Tik Tok and other social media links provides opportunities for learning and growth other than the promotion through lifestyle and positivity. In general, characteristics. Tik Tok, in my point of view, can be destructive to certain individuals lives. The app could possibly promote confidence and expression while simultaneously defeating the odds of other's feelings which could lead to negative outcomes. In regards to "the opportunities of learning and growth", the only thing that I see looking towards the app is self- judgement and characterization. Although people do gain happiness and confidence, many people only show the good side and not any of their flaws. With that being said, some people can judge those reasons such as being perfect and undesiring. An individual stated that “Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat — all those interfaces — can feed bullying,”. Overall it means that the app can be both good and bad, but I wouldn't use it towards my academics as a way to learn more and grow through life.

I am quite familiar with the app TikTok. Although it can be very fun and entertaining, it also a big distraction from work. It is extremely easy to get sucked into it and forget or become distracted from any work one may have. I agree partially with the teachers who view TikTok culture as a net positive. It can have a positive influence on students but can also get them addicted and focused more on making videos than doing work. There is a fun aspect to this app though and a wide variety of content. Sometimes I am doing work and I open TikTok for a little break and I end up spending around an hour on it just procrastinating. This gives a downside to the app.

As an average high schooler, I have a generally good understanding of what Tik Tok is. I perceive it as another social media trend that I won't take part in because I'm super awkward. Although I have to admit, some of the videos are pretty funny. While I wouldn't say that I'm extremely against the use of Tik Tok for educational purposes, I'm just curious as to how one would apply it in an educational setting. The article does talk about how it has been used in classes and clubs, but I'm not seeing the appeal. I am willing to admit that introducing Tik Tok to class would be pretty fun. Even reading this article in class was fun. So I'm willing to be convinced that Tik Tok can be used in school efficiently and not as a joke or funny topic. It also seems that those who support the use of Tik Tok in school understand its appeal to students as a social media platform. And they've done a good job of setting guidelines that allow the app to be used for school purposes. But as of right now, I think there are a lot of other online tools that could be used to accomplish the same thing that people claim Tik Tok can do.
Ava Sauer (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I think that it is important to incorporate social media into schools. No matter if it is or isn’t incorporated, social media still has a tremendous influence over student’s lives and will be used either way, so why not use it in a fun, productive way? In the article, it talks about West Orange High School TikTok Club, and shares a teacher's opinion on the club: Michael Callahan thinks that clubs like this bring students of different friend groups together, and eliminates possible bullying incidents. I ultimately agree. Social media trends are things that most everyone can relate to; if nothing else, people can relate to the memes and dances that sweep the internet weekly. As a student, I see this happening all the time; people can connect simply though shared interests in things online, and set aside their differences to form such a bond. I believe that in the classroom, phones should be put away, but in clubs it is good to use such tactics to connect with people, and it can also be a beneficial way for teachers to connect with students. The article mentions how the club has the goal of each person reaching TikTok stardom, but how it also has the goal of unifying students with differences, which I overall believe is the main benefit of having such a club.
Jhonson (Northern Marianas Islands)
In my opinion, I think schools and teachers should take better advantage of social media to engage with students. It is something students use everyday and takes up most of a student's phone use. Many adults would be skeptical or hesitate when it comes to using social media as a connection because of how it may become a distraction and cause learning qualities to go down. This may be true but however social media would not become a distraction to students if it were used as a way to connect because the way I see it is that students would not be so interested as to check what is happening with the school on social media everyday. Students are more attracted to stuff they can relate to such as being sad and overwhelmed. Something as school will not pose as a distraction to students as much as those topics they're more familiar with. I wish my school could do something like connecting to students using social media. It would make it easier for students to get information they need and to also get a closer relationship with teachers so both sides can open up with each other. It would also be a good way to show schools and teacher what students think is something they're interested in compared to what a teacher might think they're interested in. A student would sometimes hope that a teacher stop using a bland and overused joke in class or meme images in power point presentations which to a teacher may seem as if they're doing something a student might like.
Sadie Dunne (Hoggard High school in Wilmington, NC)
I feel as though most of the time, social media as a whole can be quite destructive and detrimental to the human mind, especially that of a teenager's. I think implementing the realm of social media into our schools and extracurricular activities is harmful due to the highly unrealistic expectations portrayed through it on a daily basis. What the teachers and students in Florida did by making a club out of the raging app Tik Tok seemed as though it would be a fun way for students and teachers to connect. But, I think it could be harmful because of the fact that by including social media apps into our school lives, they are taking over our minds and lives as we know it because we have no way to think creatively without the help of an app by our side.
Shalini (CNMI)
TikTok is a net positive social media app that let's people be creative. However, I feel as though it should not entirely be the reason why people come together, or have that be the main purpose of clubs. Trying to become famous can become toxic and unhealthy to some extent. Spending too much time on social media itself isn't healthy and for it to be the only reason why people talk beats the whole purpose of socializing and being humane and actually communicating with one another. As we all know, the beauty standards and body standards implemented on TikTok can be unrealistic and cause self-confidence issues. From my experience, it can be hard to try to fit in with the trends, especially when you see an abundance of girls with unrealistic bodies, or are the complete opposite race of what the highest demographic of TikTok is made up of. Although TikTok may come with all the cons, it is still an amazing way for people to showcase their talents, whether it be dancing, singing, or humor.

Many students use social media nowadays so using social media is a good way to interact with students. It could be a fun and interesting way to engage with students. There is a growing communication gap between students and teachers. Using social media could be a great way to close that gap. However, school is a place of education, so social media may just be distracting to the teachers and students. However, even back then there wasn't much interaction between the students and the teachers. So it really just depends on how you view it. Our school has a website, but other than that they don't interact with the students using social media. The future is coming and social media and technology are being more and more integrated into daily life. Incorporating technology and social media into our education systems is a progressive way to reach out to the students that would only improve as time goes on.

It is well-known that successiful teaching of a topic shows the student's mastery of that topic. Not everyone is enthusiasitc to teach things though. Using social media, teachers may be able to make the students teach, while providing some rewards such as estra credits. Indeed, as the article said, social media allows the student to show their real side, encouraging even the most introvertical students to express themselves. In addition to teaching, social media could be used in many other ways to engage students. For instance, instead of doing boring projects, students could be making a fun Tik Tok video about that topic. As a person who has some inherent talents in doing incredible things and making people laugh, I highly anticipate that social media will merge into our educational program. For everyone's sake, introducing social media in shcool may not only reduce the pressure of the large amount of monotonous homework, but also make the learning indeed enjoyable.
Lightning (The Marianas Islands)
I am familiar with the app itself. This app is a game changer for many other social media apps. Though I will admit it is addictive in the entertainment department, but this is a small speed bump compared to the positive impacts I've had from the app. It not only provides entertainment relating to your tastes but provides useful tips relating to real life in a way that is easy to remember. In my personal experiences of the app, it has given me the simple recipes which I use now. It also provided many safety tips for a variety of different situations. And most importantly it helped me see things from other points of view, this helped me understand the world better and what certain things mean. This app will not only provide you with what you need but also help eliminate ignorance of important issues and the view of the people. It would be dogmatic to say that this app does not have negative impacts. But in the sense of information and according to my personal experience, this app has proven that it has way more positive factors than negative factors compared to other social media apps.
Grace Smith (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
As Michael Callahan said “You see a lot more teamwork and camaraderie,” “and less -- I don’t want to say bullying -- but focus on individuals.” In my opinion, social media will never be a completely safe place. I do not agree with Michael Callahan’s statement about there being less focus on individuals. I have seen videos on Instagram of kids making fun of other kids that are making videos on TikTok. Social media gives insecure people, not always kids, a screen to hide behind. They say things they wouldn’t normally say in person. Mean or rude things can be sent to a kid on a social site in the click of a button. I do not think social media and school should ever mix because there is so much that happens on social media. Vulgar words and content are spread like wildfire. School is supposed to be a place of learning not a place of dancing to songs on social media sites.
Safe Haven (C.N.M.I.)
As a TikTok user, whose only form of social media is TikTok, I can say that there are many things I’ve learned online than I would’ve in school.
Jack Huo (Hoggard High School WIlmington, NC)
My school doesn't use social media for learning directly, but for information. A tweet or Facebook post can be seen by a wide audience when there is an event, notice, or something else important. I am familiar with TikTok. With a big influence on people from many different countries, such as the United States and China, it is a global app. TikTok culture in the United States might be viewed by teachers as a net positive, but its popularity can cause a lot of problems as well. Social media can become a common distraction, medium for bullying, and an obstacle to education. When my little cousin came to the US from China this past summer, Douyin, China's TikTok equivalent, was and has been extremely popular. However, she used it too frequently, in my opinion. At the table? Douyin. At Disney World? Douyin. Lounging in the house? Douyin. On Chinese social media there is a joke that people use Douyin as their second life. I am generally disinterested with social media and the flashiness of its various platforms, so I believe the missions of schools do not align with the purpose of many social media sites, TikTok included.
Taysia (Virginia)
My school as a whole does not allow social media access on any of their devices, not even personal Gmail, even though a large majority of teachers, and even the school, have their own classroom Instagram account. On it, they post about things coming up and any special events. What is the point of having those accounts if students can't get on their school-issued device and see it and get notified? Because of these restrictions, the teachers are forced to use other, not so user-friendly sources to connect with students. With projects, we are forced to work with each other and edit using these sites when a simple TikTok would solve the problem. I feel like with social media access in schools would benefit school activity and well-being.
Wesley Poon (Hong Kong)
In my opinion, students will be distracted from normal learning experience on social media by irrelevant information and communications. Social media itself contains information that can distract students significantly, for example, posts from gamers and fashion influencers. In schools, students won’t be concentrated due to the presence of such information, not to mention that they could effectively acquire knowledge using social media as a tool. If regulations enacted need students to open new accounts for educational purposes, then the implication of using social media as a tool for learning and growth fades. My school is advocating E-learning, but seldom do it allow students to use applications rather than “Kahoot” or “Google Classroom”. In short, using social media as the tool for learning and growth is not feasible without letting them be distracted.
zack omar (Minnesota, Saint Paul)
in my opinion, I think it would be helpful if used properly and for the right purposes. TikTok is actually a great tool for bringing people together and a stress reliever. I believe social media in school is something that can be very beneficial to the school environment. I also think Social media can have many benefits with getting students to focus and work with each other in a classroom. it would help students from getting bored.
Roxy (Florida)
My school has an instagram and I think it is very beneficial. They post about school events and they post pictures. If we ever need to know a date we can just check the Instagram. It’s very helpful.
Allie (Florida)
Social media can be good and schools due to the fact that there can be learning pages on things such as Instagram and videos on TickTock that teach you about geometry. There’s so many different uses for social media that it’s perceived to be bad when really it can Help students learn. Also social media can help students get in contact with teachers which will help them understand something if they have homework. Social media can also gives visual students away to understand schoolwork.
Lucas (J.R Masterman)
I think that Tik-Tok and other social media platforms can help with school and education. Nowadays, most people have a social media account and teachers can definitely take advantage of this. Whether it's making a group chat so the class and the teachers can communicate or posting homework, I think that applying social media platforms at school has the potential to help students stay engaged. However, some parents may not believe in social media and not let their kids have it. This may be a problem when integrating social media into the school system.
Evangeline Brancati (Sarasota, Fl)
I dont believe social media helps students in school at all. I can see how phones themselves could, but not necessarily social media. Social media can be used to cheat, bully, and record things that shouldn't be recorded or published.
zack omar (Minnesota, Saint Paul)
I desagree with Evangeline because most students have social media. It helps them take a break from all of the learning and stress and homework. Students could use social media to learn about what's happening in the world. and also, Social media could be used throughout schools as a learning tool if students use correctly and efficiently.
Maximilian Leete (Danvers, Massachusetts)
In my opinion, if used properly and for the right purposes social media would allow students to flourish in the classroom. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and Tiktok which make up a typical teenagers social media mean the world to our generation. Our generation is the fastest and most efficient with technology and our telephones so it only makes sense that we would be the ones to test out using social media in school. Tiktok especially has the potential to be a great using tool, as a user I can say that every now and then there are short clips about vocabulary and concepts like “anatomical terms” or the “quadratic formula.” A teacher in West Orange County decided to open his mind up to this flourishing new app that has taken over the minds of teens. He decided to use this app that his excited students brought to him and stated that kids from many different groups came together while using this app like they never have before and it also showed extreme signs of focus that had him surprised. When the students are able to connect on a level that reaches their interests that creates a basis for learning which can be used for students at all levels. Social media can have many benefits with getting kids to focus and work with each other in a classroom.
Daniella Liang (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
At my school, most people have social media. It helps them take a break from all of the learning and stress and homework. I think that it could be a tool in some way. Students could use social media to learn about what's happening in the world, but not go crazy and look at their celebrity crushes. So, in some way I think that social media could be used as a tool for learning, but for certain content. It could teach and get students' attention.
lina (west)
this article is very riight that way children can have a litile distraction from the so much stuff thats going on around them plus it a socilal experins for the teenagers to interract with one one onther from difrent culture or difrent stiyles and groups i know whats that like becase i am a chiled myself.
Logan (Sarasota, FL)
Phones in schools can allow kids to go online and read new things and will learn it easier than a textbook and a teacher talking in the class.
Jordyn (Sarasota FL)
Teachers should incorporate social media into their classrooms because it’s an engaging way for students to learn in a way that students will understand and relate to. Students like me become bored just listening to uninteresting information. With the cooler and popular way of incorporating social media into district criteria, students will be able to comprehend and be able to apply the acquired knowledge.
Haris Celikovic (Danvers High School, MA)
There is a fine line between schools using social media for education and using it to stay connected with students. While my school has several social media platforms, I do not believe that social media should be used by schools for the learning process. And let me be clear, I encourage the usage of social media by schools, however, I don’t understand how it would be useful for learning at all. The whole purpose of school is to educate students and when something doesn’t educate students, it is useless. I think that schools are forgetting that social media is a way to stay connected with the world, see what others are doing, and look at memes. While I can see that social media pages for schools are useful in displaying information from sports or other events, there is nothing educational about it. This argument does nothing to explain how social media is beneficial for learning. It only goes on about TikTok and how “there are a lot of TikTok famous kids” in schools. Sure, I can agree that “the app brings students from different friend groups together.” and there is a “lot more teamwork and camaraderie,” but where is the education happening. This article does little to prove that social media is beneficial as far as education.
Amy Palmer (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
As far as I know our school does not use social media as a learning tool, however, I do think it has a place in school to bring people together. School is mainly a place for learning, but it is also a place to be social. You can’t be around the same people seven hours a day without having social time too. Social media can also be a stress reliever for those days when the work load is just too much. TikTok is actually a great tool for bringing people together and a stress reliever. There is no pressure or competition involved, it is just fun. If someone starts making a TIkTok everyone around jumps in to make an appearance. This is one app I do think schools should promote. The TikTok clubs would probably be very popular and certainly healthier than most activities of bored students.
Abner (Planet earth)
Social Media should remain separate from school. Yes it is true that social media can be used for educational purpose and positive growth, but that's not the question. The question is whether teens choose to use social media with these intentions in mind. The answer is an easy no. The majority, not all, but the majority struggle to keep distractions such as social media under control, which keep them from responsibilities and priorities. Using education as a reason to use social media is going to most likely turn around on the education system and students will use it as an excuse to their dedication on social media. Why? Because the distractions will still be there, such as memes, celebrities, etc., and the lack of strong will in many students will remain. It's like YouTube. You can use YouTube for educational and a productive purpose but the sad truth is that the majority of the teens use it for video games, shows, and entertainment. The platform itself isn't the problem but the users who don't know how to manage it for their productive benefit. It is better to keep both separate.
Noelle Lane (Danvers MA)
Social media could be used throughout schools as a learning tool if used correctly and efficiently. Scrolling through apps like Tik Tok and Instagram, I often see teachers making posts about school. One teacher in particular, a chemistry teacher, often posts videos on Tik Tok, educating his students on what would happen in certain experiments. Things that can’t be done in class due to a time limit or limited resources can be shown through videos on social media platforms like Tik Tok. Michael Callahan, a teacher at West Orange, comments that “you see a lot of camaraderie” or teamwork, from different students at the school using social media. Social media apps are definitely a learning tool, especially in this digital age where most, if not all, students have an account on a social media platform by high school. Teachers could post mini lessons on these apps, such as the chemistry teacher mentioned earlier. Schools should look into using social media, as it is an easy and fun way to learn. Groups at my school have been using social media apps in order to engage students to go to events or join clubs. Using social media in the classroom could allow students to become more engaged in the learning material.
Lilu Trueschel (Sarasota,FL)
Social media will always be apart of a teenagers life. We are always on it, whether we’re in or out of class. I think that schools using social media as an educational tool would be really cool. Since we are always on social media, your school could be making funny videos or just normal Instagram posts to educate you on something new. Schools could also post reminders on there so students always know what’s going on.
Paige (Massachusetts)
Social Media can be a tool for learning in schools. People on Social Media can connect to people all around the world. I have been able to talk to family who live in different countries. People can meet new friends online, or connect with old ones. This may not seem like traditional learning, but connecting with people is a good lesson. Social Media does not isolate people, it brings them together. In the New York Times Article, the adviser to the school’s club says that he learned about the app from the students. The article claims that “He loves how the app brings students from different friend groups together” (Lorenz 7). A teacher decided to form a club based on Social Media. The advisor believed that this club was a way students could connect with each other. The club did not divide people, it brought them together. Furthermore, in my school, I take a class called “Social Media in Film.” In this class, we watch movies, and discuss the Social Media aspects of them. However, we go beyond this. Once a week, we all find a post on social media, and share it with the class. After showing the post, we have a discussion about it. I find this class a great idea. We get to explore what kinds of posts other classmates found interesting/impacting enough to share. The further into this class I have gotten, the more into the discussion I get. I believe I have been able to connect more in this class. For these reasons, I believe Social Media can be a good learning tool in school.
Anne (Hanoi)
In my opinion, schools and teachers should learn how to take advantage of social media. At my school social media is used to notify students of sudden change and a mean through which students could connect with teachers and ask for help with homework, and one of my teacher uses social media to see if any scandal is happening and prevents it from happening in the future. He is even in the school Facebook meme group, and when a meme that contains sexual content was posted, he told them to stop. The student who posted it may not be convinced that it is wrong, but the teacher's act prevented others from further posting dark memes. That teacher later on told the class that it is immature to post memes that students want to hide from teachers' view, and I believe that he persuaded the whole class because he is close to us and understand what we generally think and feel. Another incident was which there is a Facebook groups used to post female high school students' sensitive pictures. Someone a year above posted a post wanting to abolish this group and ask people to share his post. The teacher mentioned above said that although the post' s intention was good, the way he delivered it was not right, and should instead ask people to report the group, which is again media literacy taught in a natural and more memorable way. To sum up, teachers should use social media to notify students of changes, as a tool to help students in need, supervise and teach media literacy.
Cristina Servizio (Danvers High School, MA)
Social media has always had effects on students, especially through middle and high school. Apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok are never far from a teenager’s mind. I do think that social media can benefit schools in the sense that it is a way for students to come together. Some teachers are on social media and do connect with their students, which can be a good thing to build healthy relationships. It can also help engage students with their school beyond academics. A lot of clubs at my school use social media to keep students updated or encourage them to participate in clubs or sports. It is a way to get kids to come together. A very popular app right now among teens is TikTok. For example from the article, “students are forming TikTok clubs to dance, sing, and perform skits for the app.” This idea is great because it brings different kinds of people together to do something they all can relate to and enjoy. Students can be involved in something that they chose to do, and will not be stressed out about. It makes school feel like a comfortable and fun environment to be. If students feel comfortable in school, it might make the academics part of school less scary, and therefore help students learn better. I do think schools should take advantage of the fact that most students are on social media. It is a smart and safe way to get kids involved and help create a good learning community.
Sydney Wantman (Danvers, MA)
I believe that for the most part, social media in school is something that can be very beneficial to the school environment. My school in particular does not use social media extremely often, but there are some things that my school does take advantage of. There are Instagram accounts for several clubs where people can see announcements and meeting times for these things. I think that this aspect of social media in school is beneficial because it helps people stay connected and can possibly inform new students about some extracurricular activities. Also, at my school, there have been no clubs based on social media, like the “TikTok club” described in the article. However, if this were to happen I think it would prove to have several advantages. It would bring people together and give people something to look forward to outside of their in-school classes. All of these things keep students involved in their school and it might bring new people together. Social media can definitely be a tool that improves schools, but conversely, there are also many negative sides to it. Many students have become addicted to different social media apps over the recent years, and it could definitely become a big distraction in schools. Students might focus more on what is happening on social media than what they are supposed to be learning. However, overall, I think that the introduction of social media into school would prove to be mostly beneficial to increase a sense of community in schools.
Patrick (Danvers High School)
I think social media can be a tool for learning and growth in schools. The way I see it, the way we use social media matters, and the context that we’re using it in. It can be a distraction if students use it without the motivation to learn. However, a lot of high school students are used to social media platforms and use them in their daily lives. Using something that we have great knowledge about can engage us more in the lesson we’re being taught. Students can understand so much more if they’re able to connect to the way they learn. For example, if teachers kept handing out packets after packets for students to complete, none of them would be engaged. It’s not a good method of teaching for an era where technology is very dominant. When teachers can utilize things that students already use and make them educational, students will absorb a lot more information. Students already take in most of the information they see on social media. If teachers were to replace their learning platforms from packets to social media, the students could grow and prosper more.
Morgan O'Grady (Danvers,MA)
My school does not use social media as a tool for learning, although most students and some after school clubs do use it. I do not believe the incorporation of social media in school would be beneficial to learning because it is too flawed. Social media is not just a way to stay in touch with people, it is a negative system that constantly causes impressionable young people to believe in false things and question their worth when compared to others. As a junior, throughout my learning career we have always been warned about the negatives of social media (ex. bulling) and I do not believe that it could become a platform beneficial to education and rather that it would continue to provide distraction. How should we expect apps like Instagram and Tik Tok ,that prove to cause an obsession in students of becoming "famous", to provide educational benefits and not continue to grow towards students doing whatever it takes to gain followers and views. Social media can only be helpful in so many ways and I do not believe it could be anything but a distraction in a learning environment.
Maxwell Gettings (Danvers High School Danvers, MA)
Social media can be a really great time waster for kids our age. These apps are usually filled with posts from friends and online influencers who are posting often. It allows for kids to get creative with how they use each app to express themselves online in unique ways. It is true sometimes social media can be a toxic environment for bullying and harassment. It’s not uncommon to see mean comments on the internet for sure. But more often than not it can often be a place to meet new people, join communities, and stay in touch with friends from afar. I have rarely had negative experiences online compared to my positive experiences. I often like to use Instagram to keep up with friends I don’t get to see anymore. I like to use Twitter to keep up with current events in the world. I like to use YouTube to look up chemistry videos whenever I get confused in class. Social media has been nothing less than a gift to help me express myself online, keep up with friends or online communities, and get information for things I am confused about in school. But while I see social media as such a good tool, I believe that schools are not familiar enough to effectively implement social media in a school setting. School has not evolved effectively over time, I don’t expect a school system to implement social media to do that for them.

I believe that TikTok is a good app that can be used for learning, but it also can be harmful. There are many videos that cover a variety of topics, school related, or just about life in general. This is where it become controversial because people use it to benefit themselves, but most of the time they are distracted by wanting to see more videos, and try to become "TikTok Famous". Yet, TikTok really "brings students from different friend groups together". It shows how they all have a lot in common in school, and these videos can demonstrate it to build friendships and relationships with other people. My school, though it has its social media accounts for the sports teams and school events, might not be as interested in the idea of TikTok. They would find it to be too big of a distraction to the classroom. However, it could bring these students together to find creative ways to present a project. Though, like every social media network, people can still find a way to ruin it for everyone else, whether it's bullying or just too many people getting distracted, it may allow you to be united at the cost of missing out on schoolwork. For these reasons, I think that schools should be further introduced to using more social media networks in order to engage students, but limited amounts to make sure the point is gotten across. This use of social media will engage students with something they use everyday, and it will help the schools to connect to their students better.
Jason D'Alessandro (Danvers, MA)
Today, social media plays a big part in the daily lives of teenagers. I believe the biggest reason social media is used to communicate, which is important for schools to be aware of. These days everyone uses some sort of social media, and it is in a way already being used to help with learning. Besides asking people for help with schoolwork, clubs and sports use social media to inform students about meetings, games, and practices. Because of this, social media could technically be used as a tool for teachers to interact with students. There are also some unproductive uses of social media, like TikTok. The article describes the TikTok app and how the majority of students use it, But although it states that “TikTok is winning over some educators” it is sometimes overused. Some high school students have become addicted to TikTok, and becoming famous on the app. TikTok is an example of how social media can also put pressure on students, and trying to become TikTok famous is a distraction from school. The use of social media in this way is not a good habit and it should not be encouraged in a learning environment. Although I do believe that there are some social media platforms can be used as a tool for learning, like YouTube videos, not all of it should be used.
Mary Pellicio (Massachusetts)
We live in the technology era, and the incorporation of schools and social media was bound to happen. Many students use multiple social media apps, which if used in schools effectively could have a positive outcome. In my school, my grade has an Instagram account where student leaders post information on upcoming events. This helps in relaying messages much faster compared to emailing the student body. This is taking into considering that students are more likely to check their Instagram than their email. I understand the dangers of social media and the possible negative commentary that children may endure, but by bringing children together through apps such as Instagram or Tik Tok students can feel more connected with each other than ever before. Common interests, such as songs to lip sync to on the app can lead to bigger discussions with all different kinds of people that could blossom into unlikely friendships.
Haley Murphy (Danvers, Ma)
As a teenager, it is not surprising that I am active on most of these social media platforms and enjoy using them, but still I don't think that they should be used as tools for learning in school. My school does not use social media in any way as a tool for learning, they block them on the computers, and restrict our usage of our phones. But I am not complaining. I think incorporating social media would cause more trouble than good, It has limited capabilities in actually being a learning tool, and it would just become a distraction and make it harder for students to learn. When you are in school, your focus should be just on school itself. It is already hard enough for students to focus all day on their work, and it would become outstandingly harder with social media in the classroom. In my experience, when at home doing homework with my phone (and therefore social media) openly accessible, I find myself constantly distracted and picking up my phone way too often. I lose track of time, my productivity drops, and I fall behind on my work because of apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and Tik Tok. Lots of other people experience this same thing, and this would be the case for students while in school too, if we let social media in. I don't think that social media can be a tool for learning, and I don't think it should be used in a school setting at all.
Ashley Curcuru (Danvers, Ma)
I'm sure social media being a source of education comes as a shock to adults such as older teachers and staff. As technology advances, and apps come forward with more tools to engage students and help with communication, more and more teachers and coaches are beginning to take advantage of these resources. Social media accounts are used in my school as a way to better communication with the students and give homework or test reminders as opposed to emailing students. I think social media can be taken too far in a school setting and act as a distraction, but as Tik Tok club advisor Michael Callahan said, the social media app brought different kids together and spread positivity. Tik Tok is surely a great tool for updates on pop culture and technology usage but in my eyes Tik Tok is geared more for entertainment purposes. Almost every fellow classmate I know uses Tik Tok whether to make their own videos or to watch them. They spend up to hours on end watching the videos which was enough to convince me not to download the app. As fun as it is, I see Tik Tok as a distraction more than a tool for education. On the other hand, I am not opposed to making or watching some with my friends to pass time, and I do agree that they can be a tool to tie different people together. However I do not suggest that my school or any other uses Tik Tok as a tool for growth because it does not serve for more than a good laugh and fun times that can be spent outside of school.
Ashley DeRocco (Danvers)
In the span of the last decade, Social Media has transformed almost everyone in the world lives their lives. More often than not it’s portrayed as a negative thing. Adults believe it’s addiction for most teens, others believe it can promote bad values like vanity and approval by others, and promotes cyber bullying. However, there are so many more benefits that come from social media, especially in a school environment. For example, in my school many different programs and even the school itself have Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. They are usually run by teachers or students, and they post a lot of information about upcoming events, how to get involved, etc. I believe this way of communicating is a fantastic way to approach students. Kids are going to do better accepting information if it’s in a“language” they understand. Social media is a great way to keep students engaged in the school. Even though, social media is a great resource for extracurricular activities, I believe introducing to the classroom could improve kids learning. Most kids aren’t very interested in school, the way of teaching hasn’t really changed dramatically. The switch from paper to technology is huge, but the kids are still learning the same stuff. If kids had an opportunity to learn a topic through a world they are more familiar with. It is way more likely they will retain and actually enjoy the topic being taught.
Jonathan Leventhal (Danvers Massachusetts)
Social media should be brought into the classroom however not through tiktok. Gonchar identifies Tiktok as the primary method for students to use and share, as well as highlighting the apps popularity, "Tiktok a social media app where users post short funny videos. . . and has been downloaded 1.4 billion times." However, Tiktok lacks the capabilities to be a source for learning. The short 10-15 second clips that are TikTok's are meant to be quick and entertaining, not educational. However other Social Media sites, like Youtube would be a very useful addition in the class. Youtube provides access to millions of videos made by teachers and professor which can be very effective and educational. I hope my school will include more Social Media in classrooms, but not ones like Tiktok.
Sydney Jones (Danvers, Ma)
I believe that yes, social media can be a useful tool for the classroom. If a lot of students engage with each other on TikTok, then why not use it in a class. Students are more likely to learn and pay attention if the lesson appeals to them. I am not saying that every single lesson needs to include social medias like Tiktok, but maybe once in a while to draw students attention. Right now at my school, social media and school are not hand in hand. However there are some teachers and clubs that use Instagram, none of them are mentioned in the classroom. Tiktok is a fun, video and positive app which could be used to make the school campus a better place. If 1.4 billion people around the world have Tiktok downloaded on their phones, that means that most students must have it too, and potentially some teachers. This has a wide outreach that will engage students in the classes. Maybe by making Tiktoks students will remember more information. Having study tools makes information easier to remember. Using a wide data base to remember information in a humorous way would definitely be an easier way for students to study. If studying is able to be done in a fun way such as using TikTok, then students will want to avoid procrastinating. I think if used right, TikTok and social media can be useful tools in the classroom.
Melanie (Danvers)
As a student who uses social media, I do not see social media as a tool for learning. This is because social media is more of a distraction than a learning tool, and will only distract students from their academics and, be more focused on being "TikTok Famous" which will not lead them into a viable or sustaining career or life. Furthermore, the actual focus of the posts would mainly be on the amount of clicks someone got instead of the "teamwork and camaraderie" stated in the article, and would completely distract the students from what truly matters like friends and family and academic studies that will give them a bright and fulfilled future unlike the attention-seeking TikTok. These "drama clubs for the digital age" are overall harmful because with these large audiences watching; students are pressured to do something "photo-worthy" and can be seen doing all sorts of crazy and sometimes illegal acts just to get attention, which could distract and possibly disable them from their bright future full of potential. Therefore, I do not think that TikTok should be involved in the school curriculum, and distract students from their successful futures that are not based upon the amount of likes and followers.
Ava Messana (Danvers, MA)
I think that social media can play a huge role in keeping students and teachers connected and up-to-date with class events and sporting events. Our school has multple twitter accounts dedicated to specific sports teams, as well as an instagram account for our grade, the class of 2021. We even have an instagram dedicated to posting our prom dresses to make sure that nobody will be wearing the same one. As for a tool for learning, I don't see it to be that helpful. We don't use social media in our school as a way of learning, and I don't believe it would be beneficial. Teens spend an average of 9 hours a day on social media, and I don't think that using scoial media would be as beenficial to students as some teachers may hope. I am familiar with TikTok, and I love the app. Before I downloaded it, I believed it was very cringey and something that I wouldn't be interested in. Once I did, I was surpirsed at how funy the content was. Although the app is very much based on the fact that people want to become "famous," it has inspired me to create videos of my own in hope to make people laugh as much as they make me. I think that schools should keep social media seperate from their learning environment. On the other hand, It is a very helpful tool for extracurricular activies, and I think schools should use it more often. Although I love a good TikTok, there is a time and a place, and I do not believe that the classroom is one of them.
Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, MA)
At Danvers High School social media does not apply itself as a tool for learning. In this school students are presented with chromebooks which open opportunity to various other learning techniques. These chrome books can be used to play kahoot, quizizz and many other upsides of there benefit. However no teacher in this school uses social media as an aid in learning. I do not think that social media should be opened up to learning in school. The platforms already play such distractions inside and out of school. From class to class I see people using Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok instead of paying attention and completing the actions of the lesson plan. If schools were to open up social media into an educational atmosphere the result would be counterintuitive. It would make it even easier for students to partake in their regular social media activities during school hours because having the program open would be perceived as appropriate and students are a few clicks away becoming focussed on something other than that intended too if implemented by schools. Personally I am somewhat familiar with the app Tik Tok. From my perspective it is nothing but a distraction. I have failed to see any sort of educational presence on that platform. It is very easy for one to become distracted on the app and become sidetracked. Schools should keep social media as far away from their learning strategies as possible in order to avoid distraction.
Jake Bedard (Danvers, MA)
Personally, I think that social media can definitely be a positive influence of growth in schools. In many ways, it encourages students to interact with each other and to have fun. Creating clubs or projects based around ideas of social media is a great way to engage students, because many teenagers are drawn to social media and use it often. As Michael Callahan, a teacher who has seen how apps like TikTok appeal to students, states, “you see a lot more teamwork and camaraderie." This gives insight to firsthand experience of how social media is a positive influence on students. It is a useful tool that can bring many people together and allow students to stay engaged while having fun.
Karen Torento (Danvers, MA)
I believe that social media can be a tool used for growth and learning within schools. For example, in my high school, various clubs or groups, sports teams, classes, etc have their own Instagram or Twitter account where they post updates or other important information. I think this is an effective way to get news to spread to students across the school because a majority of teenagers use social media on a daily basis. Teens also spend a majority of their time scrolling through their feed, therefore they will see the post and be informed about upcoming events. I also think social media can be a fun place for students to express their creativity, or share jokes with their peers. Especially when Michael Callahan, a teacher from West Orange agreed that "he loves how the app (TikTok) brings students from different friend groups together". I think social media is a way for students to connect and it gives them something to talk about or a common interest. In this case, students can then bond over this shared interest and learn something new they did not know about someone before.
Jc Speight (Wilmington NC)
Can social media be a tool for learning and growth in school? I don't understand the crazy hype and love for this app. The article gives lots of information on the app tiktok and how many students use this application. But it's gotten to a point where this app is worshipped by individuals trying to become “tik tok famous”. This is a great example of how social media puts such pressure on students. At my school the girls are the main people who use tik tok. They wear clothes that might help them become famous and do pointless dances that will never help them in the future. School is a place to learn. Not a place to waste time on dancing. What the people who use this app don't understand that there is absolutely no point. Once you become “famous” or get a bunch of views on your video there's nothing to gain from it except followers on an app that will be dead in the next year. I see social media as a distraction from education. When you are at school you should be focused on grades and learning. Now once you get home you can do your little dance on your app and hope and pray you get famous. This application is not a healthy habit for teens and definitely does not belong in schools.
Matthew Luhrsen (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Social media in school can really be a balancing act because it's so open to what you want to do and you may be a good person but someone else on there may not. Then you have a bunch of weird, bad, and even racist things going around the school. In the article it talks about how TikTok is the app that is being approved for school and I think that this app is one of the better ones out there.
Matthew Luhrsen (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
A person I turn to no one really because i think the best counselor you can have is yourself. I you have a problem in your life, no one can know what it's how it feels like you do so even if your asked someone they won't get it they might think they do but they don't. Everyone is different and they way they live is always going to be different so no one can understand what your thinking or feeling. If you just need to talk about something then that is not really a crisis i think, and you can talk to someone then just to get it off your chest. This article was very eye opening and even though this would not be a job or something icall because i wouldn't want to kill my self because I've learned that it's not worth it. Also i think this should be a thing because I know that not everyone sees it like me. But instead of only this line i think we should educate kids of what happens and the repercussions of what happens when you kill your self and how people get hurt. Also how most of the time people make these allegations about dying just for the attention and we should teach them that it's not a joke and can really hurt people even if you never do it that thought of you might is always there. Until we start doing this the teen to teen i think will work and I would know because I have talked to people who want to and I've helped them and can relate to them more than an adult.
Roman Shaaban (J.R. Masterman)
My school doesn’t really use social media, but I know a lot of kids who do, including me, who use Instagram, Snapchat, and Tik-Tok. My school hasn’t really expressed any opinion towards whether or not they think social media is a learning tool. But, I am very familiar with Tik-Tok. In fact, the app used to be Music-ly which was a very well known social media app at my school. But I think that Tik-Tok is a fun app that you can use to learn new dances and find out about new songs. I think Tik-Tok is a net positive and is also an interactive social media platform that lets students and kids experiment with new dances and meet new people as well. I think that Tik-Tok could promote student learning and growth because it is a form of dancing and it could also be a good workout for students as it states in the article, “They danced until they began sweating”. Also this could be beneficial for kids who don’t have a lot of things to do after school, so they could meet new people and learn new things about the app while having an enjoyable experience with others.
Praveen (Julia R. Masterman)
Personally, I don’t think that TikTok is a beneficial social platform and I don’t believe my school does, either. However, my school does not condemn it. TikTok has a lot of content that is not ideal for school, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to use TikTok for educational purposes, as that is encouraging the use of TikTok. Keeping education and social media separate isn’t what I mean, though. Some apps, like Facebook or Instagram are useful for education and for entertainment purposes. TikTok, though, is much more unusual and it would not be good for education to mingle with TikTok.
Abigail Bowles (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I love how some schools are using social media to reach out to and engage their students. It is particularly cool how some schools are using Tik Tok in particular. I mean it makes since for schools to use social media such as instagram and twitter to get information out to the students, since it is something we check often. But with Tik Tok it is used less as a way to get out information but a way to pull out students creativity, and provide ways to work together. Some schools are even creating Tik Tok clubs. West Orange is one example from the article. West Orange has a Tik Tok club and their advisor Michael Callahan loves the way the app brings students together. He noticed that the club brought together students from different friend groups. I agree with Callahan and believe that when used the right way Tik Tok at school could be used to bring students together and improve the way they work as a group.
Anders Olsen (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
We should not be promoting such a dangerous and debilitating addiction in our public schools. Much of today’s youth have no more brain function than that of rat hitting a dopamine-releasing button over and over again until it dies from starvation. They dedicate much of their time and their life to getting some sort of social approval from the app. They strive to get a hit of dopamine that gets smaller and smaller every time. They are addicts. I have watched my sister in the car. She doesn’t engage in conversation. She looks at her phone, usually at TikTok, and clicks on video after video. Each one depicting a popular rendition of a song, a basely humorous skit, or a cookie with icing. Each one feeding her brutal addiction. The schools should not be supporting any sort of addictive behavior, no matter how much student engagement might increase. Some students would likely love school, and see a significant performance and attention boost if they smoked meth before every class, but that doesn’t mean that it is ever acceptable.
Emily Vogt (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I feel that my school is pretty open to the idea of social media. A good amount of the clubs have instagram pages where they post about things that are going on in their clubs. I also have been added into many snapchat stories specifically made for my school. We are even having a meme/TikTok day tomorrow for spirit week. I think social media and TikTok is a great way for some people to learn, but I don't think it is right for me. I get distracted very easily. I will sometimes scroll on the TikTok “For You” page for hours, avoiding homework for as long as possible. I do agree that making TikTok videos with other people will definitely help people to learn how to work together better. I believe that working on anything creative (music, art, etc) has that same affect.
Cyrus Fisher (J. R. Masterman)
Many of the students in my class, including myself, have TikTok. I often find myself scrolling through my “For You” page and finding funny videos to send to my friends. Most people are there for laughs, so most of the content (videos and comments) is purely for entertainment. I’ve had TikTok for a few months, and I’ve only seen one video that involved bullying. It said “boys on TikTok” and showed a few attractive boys on the app. Then it said “boys at my school” and displayed clips of boys at her school, which were, in more delicate terms, less eye-catching. The creator probably thought it was funny, but it was definitely a form of bullying. Many people reminded her of this in the comments. Since most of the content on TikTok is public, bullying is easily prevented because everyone can see. However, some people on the app have private accounts. This means that you choose who has viewing access to your videos. If bullying happened on a private account, all the viewers would know the creator and would be less likely to report them.
Grace Moan (J R Masterman)
As much as I love using social media, I don't think it should be used in schools. The only social media platform that I think should be used is Youtube. On Youtube, you can find many, many educational videos. I don't see how Tiktok could help us learn in school. I feel like it would be very distracting. Although I don't think Tiktok should be used in school, I think the idea of a Tiktok club was pretty cool. It allows teens to come together and make videos that will make others laugh. I see no problem with it. It seems like it would be a lot of fun for kids my age.
Jillian Steeves (Danvers, MA)
Certain websites can be a useful tool when studying particular subjects. For example, Twitter can often be a helpful resource in government or politics classes, because of the political discussion that happens on the website. Other websites that are more all-encompassing, such as YouTube, can be used to advance learning about many subjects. Allowing social media posts as a format for school projects can encourage some students' creativity; it might be easier for them to make a YouTube video than a poster board. When it comes to learning in class, schools should work on incorporating formats that the students are used to. Television and movies were once considered "new technology," and now educational films are shown to students fairly often. Similarly, because social media is a format that students are familiar with, using interactive websites in classes can aid, and even enhance learning for many students.
Carter Moses (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
At my school we use technology a pretty good amount. we use computers and i pads to do tests or assingments sometimes and we are able to use our phone sometimes to do work or turn something in. in my opinion im not a huge fan of it i dont think that computers give us that much more of an edge or help a whole lot more. i also dont think that kids should become so attached to their devices and electronics and if we utilize them so much at school that gives them more of a chance to. Also using all of these electronics gives kids gateways and more of a chance to slack off or do things on them that they are nit supposed to do.
Priya Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Social media can be used as a tool to unite people but also to bring out the bad in people. Social media plays a big part in teenagers' daily life, whether it be to ask a friend a question or just to talk to them. So, I think it is important for schools and teachers to understand that social media is the main communicator for students. Mostly everyone has some sort of social media by high school, but there could be issues with students that don't. Certain clubs in my school that use social media to inform students about the current events that are going on in the school or just when certain club meetings are. Social media could be used to bring people together, unite people with similar ideas, and is a useful tool for teachers to interact with students.
Izel (J.R. Masterman)
I think teachers should use social media to better interact with students to learn more about what they do in their free time and should use it to relate to them. Personally Tik Tok, I can’t see it helping in class but as an extracurricular activity it could be a fun way for students to connect through the social media and th schools presence in the public will grow. The kids can gain popularity for themselves which they can put in their college resume.
Amelia H. (J.R. Masterman)
I am familiar with the app TikTok and while I have seen videos, I have never made one myself. But I find TikTok to be addictive and Iike watching the videos. Since the app is commonly used by lots of students, it can be very helpful to teachers because not only can they teach through the app, but they find it to be an effective way of connecting with their students. I agree that TikTok is more than a bunch of funny videos and I have even seen people even make friends out of performing the app’s skits. While I understand that some students prefer not to combine social media and school, I feel that through TikTok students are able to help each other with school while enjoying themselves.
Nick Doleschel (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia)
I have never thought about how social media and/or Tiktok could be used to teach students. This article made me realize how schools could use social media to teach students in a more interactive way, especially since social media is a way of life for some people. Additionally, it could help students interact more with each other from foreign places, which could help kids learn about foreign culture such as music or dance. That being said. There should be some limitations imposed so that bullying does not occur during the use of this platform. For example, schools should create strict guidelines approving what content is okay for in school use. Otherwise, kids would be using social media excessively instead of focussing on learning. Additionally, bullying could play a role in using social media. To stop this, teachers should review all work made, before shown to the class.

I may watch Jeopardy! every night and wear glasses with a really strong prescription, but it makes me a little sad to think that face-to-face communication is becoming an old-fashioned way of bonding and “teamwork”. Maybe social media does keep us connected, but does it really give us relationships? Aren’t there better, more tangible ways to grow together than through the screens of our devices? I know I wish I saw some of my friends’ eyes looking at me rather than their phones. So maybe an online project every now and then could be beneficial in some classes, but ultimately, I don’t believe apps like TikTok could realistically be used for education.
Grace Robertson (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I am a very hesitant supporter of social media in general. I turn sixteen in a month and I just got an Instagram in August (many of my peers have had one since sixth grade or so). That said, I am not averse to the idea of social media being used for good; it keeps friends and family that don’t see one another in touch, can be a form of entertainment, and is useful for social/political movements and the economy/businesses. I wouldn’t even say that I don’t think it can help in education. I just don’t think TikTok in particular really can, and I think for many other social media platforms it would be more of a distraction than anything else. For instance, I have a friend who is absolutely addicted to TikTok. Another friend and I challenged her to not use it for two days and she refused; she wastes hours every week on there, just watching funny videos. She talks about how she doesn’t have time to study and sometimes I can’t help but wonder if that would be different if she spent less time on apps like TikTok. Not to mention, while I think some of the videos on TikTok are funny, it’s laughable to say the videos on there (at least the ones that are watched) are educational. They’re basically just Vines: short, random videos based on teenagers’ humor.
Bill (mars)
My school has rules about certain websites and what you can and can't use. We have our own emails and loan computes that are provided. I wouldn't say our school is super involved with apps like TikTok and others but they are involved with websites that are used to help the students be hands on and a better understanding of the topic the are learning. I don't think that my school cares what the students do with apps like the ones mentioned in this document but they try having the students stay off of websites that are not school related and could cause distractions.

Technology is a part of everyone's day to day life. Schools use it, governments use it, families even use it just to communicate. Every time teachers give assignments when I am grounded I have to be given an alternate assignment. I believe that speaks volumes on how dependent we are on technology in the learning environment. That being said, I think one of the biggest underused technologies that we have access to is social media. It is a way to communicate ideas and thoughts from one person to another (private messaging) or from one person to a mass group of people (posting). Social Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and even FaceBook could and should all be integrated into learning because they are quick ways to express how we feel through a medium that we understand and enjoy. I think my school has started dabbling into social media for education but not in classrooms like it could be. We use it to share news, sports events, and spirit week themes. While this is good in theory we are neglecting all of the good that social media could be doing for individuals in the classroom.
Anand Rajagopalan (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
My school does use social media for some types of learning but not many. For example, if we need to watch a video for science we use youtube. But those videos are only for taking notes and have been approved by the school district. We don't use apps like TikTok of Instagram.
Veda (HI)
My opinion is that social media and school should not be mixed. I think teens of my age spend too much time on social media as it is including me. Being on our phones is a real addiction and takes away from activities that the school should be promoting such as sports, theatre, and other clubs. My school is technology-based, but we do not use social media when doing school work. I agree that social media brings people together but I think they can do that out of school. There needs to be a thick line between school and social media.
Rex (Kauai, HA)
I think it's possible for a social platform to work cohesively alongside an education system, with sites like Quora and tools like Discord being pretty strong examples. Social Media can be defined simply as sharing media with other people digitally, and I can only see this as beneficial to education, whether it's contacting peers and teachers or turning in work digitally.
Kirra (HI)
My school is technology-based, so a lot of online learning is used for the students. I believe that social media has the opportunity to be a good learning resource, but I feel as if the cons outweigh the pros. Teens all around the world are using social media on their own and I do not think that it should be present in school. There needs to be a barrier where social media is used, especially if it is in the classroom. While social media can bring people together there are also many ways they can bring them apart.
Davin (Hawaii)
My school uses some social media to interact and assign work to students. I feel that most of my educators at school feel that social media is more for at-home use, considering how distracting social media is at school. Schools using nonmainstream social media apps to interact with students can be a good tool for teaching students and understanding students better. TikTok has made itself clear to all teens and children and has become very popular. I feel that TikTok is a double-edged sword that can be used to promote good behavior and bad or toxic behavior between peers. Keeping education the main priority, apps that show students interesting history or facts and keep their attention would be the main aim.
Noelani (Kauai, HI)
I do believe some social media platforms can be used as a tool for learning. My school has a social media account and we use it to update parents on school events and advocate for our ciriculum. And I agree that in our new era younger people are most likely to connect with. I also think I have the app, I don't post on it or comment on videos I use it solely for entertainment purposes, but I have seen very interesting influencers on there. Some people may use social media as a distraction in school and during times where they should not which is why I think apps and websites get such a bad rep.
Joaquin (Kauai)
Yes, I am very familiar with the app TikTok. I feel it is a very interesting app. I think its a good app, but the community that is mostly on it are very...well cringy and just mean to people. I feel that social media could be a very useful tool in today's education. for instance, the program knows as discord is used a lot by what is known as gamers because it is so simple and easy to use. It can be used to talk to people by typing or talk and even video chatting with one person or up to how many you could have in a server. I feel like this could be a useful tool for online schools or just any school to let the kids know what's going to happen with this week or any sudden change in the schedule. or Instagram could be used for that type of thing to just not as useful. but I do not feel all fits into this category of helping education grow.
Nkozi Spore (Kauai, Hawaii)
Back when I was in public school, social media was not allowed unless permitted by the teacher. They viewed social media as a waste of time and just a way to spread rumors/misinformation. I feel as if the school could use social media as a way to connect or give a message to the students. The more connected we are to our teachers, the better we can learn. Social media is growing rapidly over the common people. Now teachers can use this as an advantage to grow with their students.
Rena Liu (J.R. Masterman)
TikTok and social media is very entertaining and fun to watch, but at our age, it can get every addicting. Incorporating social media into our everyday school hours would be fun and it would help express students, but would it actually help kids learn better? Kids already spend a lot of time on social media, and including it into school might help kids learn or just make them more addicted. I’m not hating on social media, I just think that we need to find a way for kids to learn and to have fun.
Christina (Julia R. Masterman)
I don’t really have an opinion on this. I feel like if schools were to take advantage of social media, there are some drawbacks to this. First, unlike me, some kids don’t even have social media, or aren’t allowed to download them either. This can exclude some kids in the class/school. They might be one of the few that might feel left out while everyone is talking about it. Promoting this in the school would just make it worse. Also, some social media, like Instagram or Facebook, require you to take photos to post them publicly. Like me, some prefer to stay away from the cameras. I don’t want to be posted everywhere on the internet, and I’m sure others can say the same. Of course, there are advantages. This could help more kids express themselves, and find friends who like the same things they do. And for the problem about being posted publicly on the internet, like said in the article, a club for it would be nice. Then, there could be a film room where everyone could film for Tik Tok, where pictures can be taken, etc. All in all, as long as I have nothing to do with it, I don’t mind the schools using social media as a use for school. 💛~
Averi (HAWAII)
I believe some social media may be able to be a tool for learning and growth, although, I believe the only thing that students would grow in is in cooperation and creativity. TikTok is mainly used for humorous entertainment, from what I have seen. But I have seen several videos that blow my mind because of how creative they are. I notice the same with Youtube, just on a more various platform that is slightly different. If people want to be "famous" or "get the most likes," they NEED to have creative content. So I think for students it gives them an escape, to be creative whereas in class they may not always have the opportunity.
Nene (America)
Social media can be used as a good and bad influence on students. I personally believe although there are so mand positives of using social media there are negatives. Such as being anonymous which teenagers can use to their advantage to be cyberbully other students at school and never be caught due to the fact of being anonymous online. Once in my middle school, there was an Instagram account that would follow students of our school and save the photos they posted to later criticize them online. In the end, we never knew who was behind that page and we will never know if they got punished. But people like that, that use technology to a bad advantage are not going to disappear.
Theodore Loshi (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia PA)
As much as I enjoy using social media apps such as Tik Tok, I believe that it shouldn’t be in schools. From experience, I know that when teachers try to use social media they will interpret and use it incorrectly and causing an awkward situation that results in a worse school experience. They believe that if they use social media, then they will be able to engage with us and relate to us more, but that usually is never what happens. Students will find it cringy and at certain times embarrassing, then students will possibly dislike the teacher and end up paying attention to them less because they think they are annoying. This is how I feel because this is what I know and have experienced.
Marisa Maisano (J.R. Masterman)
I think that my school could use TikTok by assigning projects where you have to make a TikTok about a certain subject. For example, on my TikTok For You Page, I always see people posting TikToks where they sing a song about their subject, Spanish for example and then make up a dance to it. Assignments like that could for one help you to think outside of the box and two, it may help you remember your subject matter better because you remember doing a dance to it and singing the song. Our school could also have a competition where the most liked student-created TikTok about a certain topic you are studying could win an incentive like maybe 10 extra credit points.
Vivina Dong (J. R. Masterman)
I don’t know what my schools think of social media, because we use YouTube for class, but we don’t use all the other social media like Instagram, SnapChat, or Facebook. I'm not familiar with any of the social media other than YouTube and WeChat. I have mixed feelings about having social media in school. One reason I would want social media to be used in school is that we could be more engaged in learning and also participate in a more diverse environment. But I also feel that too much social media could affect the learning environment because it is a distraction for many people. I am familiar with TikTok because I have the original version, which is actually called “DouYin” since it originated from China. Many of my classmates talk about TikTok and the famous memes and trends, but I don't understand them. I don't really have feelings about teachers saying that they view TikTok cultures a net positive, because I don't really understand the newer version of TikTok. I have mixed feelings about social media used in schools, so maybe we should limit the amount of social media we use or the type of social media we use.
John Appleseed (Pittsburgh)
It can be educational but only between the people who are posting educational things but will not expand beyond that.
Clay Dean (Lihue, HI)
Because of how immature most kids are in school (regardless of age), there's no benefit in even having phones or electronics during school. It's way too big of a distraction. If we start allowing kids to make Tik-Toks in school, then later they're just going to want more. They're going to start using Snapchat, and then Instagram, and other apps during class that will be destructive to their education. Imagine all the teachers that will be crying because their kids aren't paying attention in class... No, I'm not saying phones should be banned off campus. They just shouldn't be out, period. It's like at the movies. You can bring your phone to a movie theater, but are you going to use it? No. The reason you went to a movie theater is so you can watch the movies, not be on your phone. The reason you go to school is so you can have a FACE TO FACE INTERACTION!!
Ayona Kuriakose (J. R. Masteran)
I am familiar with the app and the trends, but I do not have an account because my parents don’t think I am old enough to have social media yet. But I learn about the trends through school and youtube. I agree with the teachers who think that TikToK is a net positive because unlike other social media sites like Insta or Snapchat, this is a place where you can act crazy and like yourself without being judged. From the TikToks I’ve seen, it promotes you to be yourself. The environment that TikTok has created is a very open-minded and friendly one. In conclusion, Tik Tok is a very friendly and open-minded environment where you can express yourself in whatever way you want to.
Phil Swift (Hawaii)
I am not familiar with Tik Tok. I have never downloaded and I never will. I disagree that it is net positive I personally feel it's very toxic. The "children" on that app from what I heard misuse the app and now it has become very inappropriate. I can see how this app might be used positively but at the moment it's disgusting.
Thalia (J.R. Masterman)
Overall, TikTok is a fun app where you can express yourself. However, you have to keep in mind the app is a Chinese app, and there have been allegations in the past of TikTok taking users’ information. In a CBS news article it states, “Musical.ly, the popular social media app for children that is now known as TikTok, illegally took personal information from kids without parental consent.” I think it’s an under statement to say that is scary. Not only that, there is also a lot of bullying on TikTok that the article doesn’t really cover. Recently, it has become a trend to call people clowns on TikTok if they make a simple mistake. In conclusion, even though TikTok is a great app to occupy teens and youth, but there are also downsides that aren’t really worth the price. I would recommend using it with your own risk.
Saige (Kauai, hawaii)
Social media is one of the biggest things for this generation. there are both goods and bad's about this. Tiktok can be a hobby for you. It can be inspiring to other people to dance and try this new trend. But!!!! it can take up too much of your time. There's a lot of things that you can do outside. Some people out in the world are so addicted to different social media and stay in all day on there phones. There will always be a good and bad to something. Social media is pretty cool.
dan (byf)
good job
Brycinea Stratton (J.R. Masterman)
I’ve gone onto the TikTok website where you can watch the trending videos, but I haven't ever made a TikTok, or been in one. I feel that TikTok is for the most part harmless, if anything good, but I feel that before long, there are going to be people cyberbullying on TikTok. Teachers probably should take control of the advantages in learning TikTok gives students, and then TikTok probably won't ever grow to be a big negative environment. If the students are using TikTok in a good way in school, they'll probably form the habit of posting “nice” TikToks, which will prevent the “bad” TikToks from being common.
Kira Douglas (J.R Masterman)
Does your school see social media as a tool for learning? Share how your school and teachers use social media as part of the education process? My school sees some social media sources as tools for learning but others not so much. For instance, YouTube is used in my school. Teachers use YouTube to show videos that explain things we are learning more “kid-friendly.” We watch the videos and take notes and or talk about the video for better understanding. Social Media sources like Instagram and TikTok are not used to teach us. Us students can tell that these are not really allowed. When we are allowed to use our phones we are not allowed to use Instagram, Snapchat and many other social media sources, but for some reason YouTube is allowed. So my school really only uses YouTube to teach us, as that is easiest way for them to help teach us with.
Phebe Truong (J.R Masterman)
Yes of course I am familiar with the app Tik Tok! I myself am also pretty addicted to it. Many people may disagree, but I think that Tik Tok is a way to push yourself out of your comfort zone, or a way to express yourself. Not to mention, but if you watch some Tik Toks other than your own, you may find something that is educational once in a while, or maybe you will find something that can help you in the long run. As a user, a lot of my friends follow me. They are always commenting positive feedback compliments, and so on. So, if someone IS getting negative comments, you can always block or report the person making these rude/mean commentary. Something that is even better though, is that you can make your account private so that you definitely won’t get any hate at all. Now, the only people that can see your account are the people you follow back! So overall, Tik Tok is mainly positive, and nothing is ever to hateful unless someone is posting immature content.
Owen Cheung (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
Does your school see social media as a tool for learning? Share how your school and teachers use social media as part of the education process? My school sometimes uses social media as a tool for learning. My school usually uses youtube to watch educational videos on the topic we are learning about. Should schools and teachers take better advantage of social media to engage with students? Do you wish your school did? Or should the two worlds remain separate — for everyone’s sake? I think that teachers are already using social media well enough for learning, so I do not think that teachers need to take better advantage of social media. The two worlds should never remain separate because there is really useful information on social media that are not in educational textbooks. Are you familiar with TikTok, the app discussed in the article? What’s your take on it? The reporter states that “teachers at many schools say they view TikTok culture as a net positive.” What do you think? I am familiar with TikTok, my take on TikTok is that it's mainly for fun and can't be used for educational purposes. TikTok should not appear anywhere near education and I can't find a reason on how TikTok could be positive in a learning environment. Does your school see social media as a tool for learning? Share how your school and teachers use social media as part of the education process?.
Athanasios Mondlak (J.R. Masterman)
I believe schools and teachers should take better advantage of social media but only if there is a certain platform dedicated to school and classwork alone. Another reason is that it would be easier for students to access class notes if they are on a social media platform. It wouldn’t affect me too much if my school started using social media more, but I would prefer my school did because it might help other students by making class notes easier to access and share with piers. But as I stated before, I only think schools should take advantage of this if there is a platform only dedicated to school alone.
Leonardo Gagliardi (J.R. Masterman)
Many extra-curricular clubs at my school have social media accounts, but I do not recall finding an Instagram account for the school itself. I, personally, cannot see how social media can be used as a tool for learning, unless you are learning about current events. School would be a lot more fun if social media was heavily involved in students’ curriculum. I am very familiar with TikTok and its contents. I know lots of people who use TikTok and have seen people film the videos in school. I think I might have even been in one before. I wouldn’t see any reason why teachers would encourage or even approve the use of TikTok for school purposes. My school would be so much fun if I got to attend TikTok club, because everyone can socialize about current trends.
Sadie Krumrine (J.R. Masterman)
I do not believe that schools and teachers should begin to use social media to engage students. How would that engage students who don’t have a phone, or don’t use social media? I think maybe it would be beneficial to have clubs, however it shouldn’t be required. I’m not familiar with TikTok as I don’t have a phone, but I have heard about it from friends and peers. I don’t think any social media platform could be truly beneficial as there is always a possibility of cyber bullying, no matter how secure the site is.
Shani (J.R. Masterman)
I am familiar with app TikTok and my take on the app is that it is a cool app for seeing how people from all over the world are, but not for school. I do think that TikTok has a positive net culture because as I said before it is used all over the world and why wouldn’t you like seeing different cultures and different environments and how people like to use the sounds for different videos, but it is also a place where children or even grandparents can have fun. Lastly, I still don’t think TikTok is a place for school it’s a place for people to have fun, not a place for students to find their homework.
Matt Dougherty (J. R. Masterman)
I think that the two worlds of social media and school should remain separate. To be quite honest, when teachers try to use social media to try to engage and relate with students, it kind of comes off as cringey. I am glad that my school doesn’t really try to use social media to try to engage or relate with us. I am familiar with the app TikTok. I don’t really use TikTok, so I don’t know much about it, but from what I have seen, it seems a lot more positive than other forms of social media.
Henry Hunsicker (J.R. Masterman Philadelphia, PA)
I think that teachers and schools should not take advantage of social media to engage with students. The teaching method we use at my school is good and works well. We only use technology when we type or do research on a computer. I think that if social media was used to teach it would be too much of a distraction and students wouldn’t learn as well. I do not wish this was used at my school. I think social media should stay outside school and used for peoples’ enjoyment only.
Jonah Smith Posner (J.R. Masterman)
I believe that Tik Tok would do more harm in schools than good. If teachers let their students work and learn on Tik Tok, some of them will do the work others might take time catching up on their favorite memes. In a school environment this would not be okay. At my school teachers require our phones to be off and away. I believe that this is a good policy because then I wouldn’t be tempted to text my parents in the middle of a period.
Hager Alsekaf (Julia R. Masterman Highschool)
Although I have tiktok, I only used it three times in the past 7 months. Tiktok is pretty famous now. From the little amount of time I used it, I saw that its has content that is funny and heartwarming but there are also many things that aren’t really appropriate to be seen in school. This goes for every other social media app I have like Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Facebook, etc. I understand that some people think that tiktok can be used in school as something similar to imovie to teach kids topics in school in an entertaining, engaging, and fun way. I agree with that statement but at the same time I feel that it would be a distraction for students to use social media in school. I feel that sometimes students will rather focus on social media app than the actual assignment they have to do on the social media app. Just having your phone, or another electronic, out is already a distraction. Social media is already used for students to text/call each other for group projects or assignments. I will admit that this does help students grow closer. But other than that, I don’t think using apps like tik tok in classes in beneficial nor a tool for learning.
Jason Zhang (Masterman)
I think it is best not for schools to use social media during class. I agree that social media can be used to communicate and connect with other students, and strengthen the school’s overall bondage, but there are better ways to do it. IN my school, (MAsterman) which is relatively “calm” compared to other schools in the (Philadelphia) area, there is already a lot of filming tiktok videos and chatting on instagram, when we aren’t even supposed to be on our phones unless directed by a teacher or under certain circumstances. Overall, I don’t think school and pop culture should be kept totally separate, as it’s important for students to learn about effects of social media, and the way it can be harmful or helpful, but social media is far too distracting in school even when it’s not allowed, and i feel that for teachers to encourage it would just be far too much. If people are looking to help others through social media, it can be done outside of school, or using less distracting methods. I just don’t think students in middle/high school are mature enough to handle something as tempting as social media in class.
Isadora Monteith (J.R. Masterman)
My school, J.R. Masterman, uses social media like news, or online articles, and does not have any social media or TikTok clubs, but I believe it should. If our teachers implied social media into our lessons, I believe that myself and many of my peers would learn in a more productive way. By using something that interests us, our teachers could feed us information in a way that is fun for all of us. I am familiar with TikTok because I have it and use it regularly. There is occasional bullying on the app, but that is inevitable because there will be bullying on any type of social media. I have learned about current events on TikTok that I hadn't learned till later on any news source, for example, this years amazon fire. In conclusion, TikTok and other social medias are benifical and would help if they were implied in school.
Lily Dorfman (J.R. Masterman)
The world of education and social media should stay separate. I can’t think of any way that social media would be beneficial to teaching and students’ learning. I can understand if you are using Tiktok or Youtube for an after school activity, but it won’t help to study or to receive information. These are two separate worlds, and they have different uses for a reason.
Weston Tanh (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I am quite familiar with the app TikTok and the views that some people have on it. I think that TikTok is a great app that could help people build up their confidence through expressing themselves through short videos. With the app’s rapidly growing popularity, people might think that is is “addictive” but i think that it is like that because it is interesting to see other people make jokes and do things that the viewers could only think of doing. I personally think that the ever growing app should be allowed in schools across the world because of the positive effects to students, allowing them to cheer up when they are stressed from too much homework or laugh when they are sad, which could help them focus more.
Elina Chen (J.R Masterman)
This viral social media TikTok can be very entertaining to watch. It’s filled with thousands of short videos from all different genres and everyone can find something they would enjoy. However, I don’t see how you can incorporate this social media into academic learning. In this age of technology, many young people are becoming easily addicted to technology. My little sister, who is 5, is on YouTube 24/7 watching Peppa Pig. However, if we integrate social media into our schools, this will only give more people time to be online. I’m not particularly against TikTok as a whole, but I don’t see how this app could be a tool for learning.
Sammy Abusaab (J.R. Masterman)
I am very familiar with TikTok. There are lots and lots of ads for it on Youtube and personally i think it is one of the worst apps there is. You can love it or hate it but I don’t think it's good. It is just very, very cringey with “famous people” who just lip sync to a song. Right now since its October there is a trend on TikTok where the song “Spooky Scary Skeletons” plays over people dancing. The bad thing about this is that it's not even the original dance and has nothing to do with skeletons. If you are going to have a trend about a 9 year old song, at least follow the original version. About it being net positive, I can see how it is net positive but I think it's just a waste of time. It’s just a song played while you lip sync to it and you call yourself famous. It really is just neutral. It isn’t fun, it is full of content stolen from Reddit, it is very cringey, and in my opinion stupid.
Brooke Howard (Grant Career Center (OH))
Our school uses social media quite often! The school has their own YouTube channel, and teachers often use social media to show what's going on in their classes- and show off what the kids are doing. I believe using social media entices students to cooperate- using something most of the students use in everyday practice- to educate them in a way that will motivate them to concentrate more. I, personally, love TikTok. I watch compilations of videos from the app in my spare time. They're funny for the most part, and some have even made me learn things I didn't know before. They have also helped me more than once when I was feeling down. I believe it's a mostly positive platform, definitely more positive than most others. TikTok and other social media platforms can be used to inform students of school events, as well as give them reminders of what they're learning.
Shahrin Kader (J.R. Masterman)
I do not think that schools should engage in social media for learning. While I do think that it is a great idea to teach with ways students enjoy are familiar with, social media shouldn’t be used. But I don’t necessarily mean they should stay all the way separate from each other, I just think they shouldn’t be used in schools. Social media could incorporate school related matters, but not be out during the school day, or time spent at school. People could get addicted, and use social media instead of interacting with each other in real life. This is already a problem, and if schools promote social media, then more people will fall into this trap, causing a future where people don’t talk to each other. Not only that, people would rather be on their social media, than trying harder in school. This future is not safe for future generations, and it can metaphorically be the end of the human race, because we worked so hard to increase our knowledge just to stop and post something on TikTok.
Mariacristina Calcagno (J.R. Masterman)
Unlike most middle-school kids, I do not own a phone, therefore do engage in any form of social media. Sometimes this keeps me a little behind on the latest trends, like TikTok, which I have never used. I have never really considered social media being used as a learning resource. Every time I glance at a social media post on someone’s phone, it's never anything educational-- actually, it's usually quite the opposite. I think that TikTok should remain separate from schoolwork, because even though I see how it could potentially be a fun way to learn, I think that social media can result in bullying and other non-positive things. To be sure that the posts will be beneficial and will be educational, I think that there should be a seperate app with more supervision and regulations on what is allowed to be posted, like having to get some kind of approval by a teacher or adult before posting something. I’m not totally against TikTok, because I do see it as a nice social activity when not used inappropriately. I often observe girls in the hallway before school practicing dances, and they always look like they are having fun. Watching these girls is basically all the experience I have with TikTok, so I don’t have much more to say. In addition, all the students in the article seem to really like it. It seems to be something that boosts confidence in adolescents. In conclusion, I think TikTok is a good social activity, but I think it should be kept separate from school.
Kathleen S. (J.R. Masterman)
I am very familiar with TikTok. TikTok is an extremely popular app and almost every single kid I know has it. I really like TikTok because, as one of the students in the article stated, it is a free space where you can be who you really are. TikTok users love content of people just being funny and hanging out with their friends. I also think that TikTok could be used in school. It could be used in a similar way that imovie is used. It can be utilized to help students or teachers make educational videos that are funny and interesting. I think it would be beneficial for my school to have a tik tok club. It would be a creative outlet and lead to bonding of students who normally wouldn't talk to each other.
Gabe Axelrod (J.R. Masterman)
I know about TikTok and I know people who use it, but I don’t. I think TikTok can be a good way for students to express themselves and be engaged with friends. I don’t personally use TikTok because I would rather spend my time doing other things like playing sports. I don’t see how TikTok can be used to help people learn, I believe TikTok and school should be separate from each other.
Joseph C (J.R. Masterman)
Tiktok though filled with funny memes and vsco girls, in my opinion can also be a very educational learning resource. Many users on Tiktok have educational videos such as how to deal with stress, procrastination and how to study, videos that teach you things school just can’t. School is more for expanding your knowledge of new topics, rather than how to deal with things you already know. For example, school math classes can teach you how to solve algebraic equations, but can’t teach you how to master them. Tiktoks can show you how to master them, by showing skits of how this really equals this plus that to the third power squared or other things on that subject. Also Tiktoks can help kids deal with emotional stress, showing them how they’re not alone, an example being, a child with anxiety might see how others on Tiktok have the same thing but instead of fretting over it, they use it to their advantage and make videos about it, it might inspire that kid to do the same thing, then another kids sees it and does the same, creating a cycle of kids becoming more self confident.

My school doesn’t see social media to be a way of learning. I agree with them on this because I have yet to see what an app like TikTok can actually do to help you learn, for example, math. TikTok is just another example of many different apps, all with the same idea and function. I don’t see how Likee or Snapchat is not any more popular then TikTok. The two worlds, school, and social media should stay apart for the better. I don’t have TikTok but I used to have something similar, Musical.ly. Musical.ly was the app that I interacted with most back when I was a bit younger. I had gotten the app because everyone had it, same with every other social media app that I have currently. Musical.ly was enjoyable and I was happy to be a part of a community. It got tiring, but only when I was moving to another school. I had lost all my old friends, there were so many trends that I couldn’t keep up with, and the app was slowly but surely ripping me away from responsibilities and reality. I left a message to all the people who were following me and I deleted the app. Some of my friends tell me that if I miss Musical.ly so much, just get TikTok. I wouldn’t like to revert back to that monotonous life that I had as a ten-year-old. A suggestion for my school is to not use TikTok or any other music app ever.

The reason that tic tok is so popular is because users find the content on there funny and it catches their attention. It's almost like how vine was so popular. People would post short funny videos. I think that users use it as a way to release stress from normal life such as school work, things that might be happening at home, and drama that might have happened with friends. It's a way to laugh and just relax and take our minds off of certain things. If schools started to get involved with something like this, it might take the fun out of it by continuously posting videos that are not funny and does not appeal to the audience. If schools do find a way to make their content appeal to young users, then there would be no problems with the idea of schools getting involved with it.

Our school doesn't see social media as a tool for learning, they only use websites like Youtube for educational videos. I think schools should try to make an effort to use social media to engage with students but social media isn’t meant for educational purposes. It’s a way of communicating and some schools have many students who don’t have a phone or technology to use TikTok or any other social media apps. Whether or not social media can be used to engage with students and help students learn depends on how the school handles it and how the students handle it. I know that for many schools, social media won’t help and will just hurt because schools enforce policies like no phones strictly so there wouldn’t be a point in incorporating social media into schools as long as schools don’t allow the use of phones in general and if they have extreme control over social media. Addiction will be a problem as students might just spend most of their time on TikTok or other social media apps. TikTok is a good app and lets people show their creativity and flaws in short videos and I do hope my school allows apps like TikTok as most students are familiar and it will make school more enjoyable.

I’m fairly familiar with the app TikTok. In my mind TikTok could very easily be used in the classroom to further education. It could be used to create presentations such as the ones by San Jose High School in California for extra credit. By doing what it would really make watching presentations more fun for everyone and probably make them more fun to make as well. I definitely see the point that a lot of teachers will make; TikTok and other social media platforms open up inappropriate use for predators. Furthermore, using social media can result in bullying and that’s not necessarily the best thing for schools, especially if schools are encouraging the use of social media. In the end I don’t have social media and don’t really see the point, but I still think that social media could, but I still I think that TikTok, and other social media platforms, could and should be incorporated into school to really pull it into the digital age of technology in the 21st century.

My school doesn’t see social media as a tool for learning, but I think they should. I feel like if schools use things that students are more familiar with and use often, such as Tiktok, then it could be helpful to them in school. I am somewhat familiar with Tiktok, I don’t really create videos or post anything, but I do watch the videos other people post. I think that Tiktok can be used in school as something positive. It could help people interact with one another and make new friends. In my opinion, if social media is used correctly in school by teachers it can be a benefit to many students and even teachers.
John Ritsko (J. R. Masterman School, PA)
I think that social media (especially TikTok) does not pair well with a school setting. Maybe in an afterschool club, it is a fun way to socialize with friends but I think if teachers use it in a class some people will abuse the privilege and start making TikToks unrelated to what the class is supposed to be doing. These unrelated TikToks will compile and then teachers will fell the need to remove TikTok from their curriculum.
Kaddy Ren (J.R Masterman, PA)
Yes, I’m very familiar with TikTok, I’d maybe go as far as calling myself a TikTok addict. Although, I’m very fond of the app, I think bringing something like TikTok into a school setting could ruin the fun. Don’t get me wrong, I think the app encourages creativity and brings students together as well, but from an outside perspective creating a club centered around making TikToks is a tryhard move. I guess it all has to do with how the schools decide to incorporate social media into their curriculums, but having a club that meets every week just to make videos seems kind of draining. I feel like at one point or another, I’d become exhausted at the idea. However a school could include something just as interacting, like having people submit TikToks and the student body electing to have a “TikToker/TikTok of the Week”. I don’t really enjoy social media as a whole like Facebook or Instagram, so I’d have to agree with Mr.Callahan who said “On other media you’re hiding your flaws, here you’re showing them off.”
Michael Huang (JR Masterman)
I feel like TikTok should not be used in schools as a learning feature, along with most other social media platforms. It doesn’t help anyone academically and might even be a distraction which worsens their grades. To me, the only social media platform that is reasonable to use in school is YouTube. On YouTube, you can watch educational videos and teachers can easily post things on it. Other platforms like TikTok and Facebook seem full of junk and not at all something that should be introduced to a school environment.

If we’re being honest, I think TikTok is a really great thing. I myself have TikTok and almost all my friends have TikTok too. As the article states, TikTok is a very non-judgemental app where you can be crazy and no one can say anything about it. There is a lot of original, hilarious content and a bunch of talent. In my opinion, I think that the teachers are right and that TikTok is a positive environment for lots of students. They can express themselves in every way possible, whether it’s serious or funny. I believe that more people should have TikTok, as it is pretty much the only positive social media there is.
Manav Jha (J.R. Masterman)
Yes, I am familiar with the app TikTok. I use TikTok a lot, and I think that it is a good app. It has funny skits on it that can make your day if you are feeling down. You can also make your own skits, which is also an enjoyable process. Personally, this app uses the most percent of my battery and cellular data because I use it so much. My account hasn’t gone “viral” yet, mostly because I downloaded it a month ago, and I haven’t made too many skits. The way I use the app is for comedy, which might be the most common use. I think that it would be great if my school could also create a TikTok club like other schools, because that could form friendships and it would be a club that allows people to have fun. In my opinion, the app could be used by teachers and students alike to teach the students. They could make skits about what they are learning in school, and show it to the students, so that they understand the topics.
Isa Kennedy (J.R. Masterman)
I think that social media should not be used in schools. I believe that letting kids use social media in schools will make them too attached to their phones, and will prevent them from learning as much. I know many kids personally that post at least 3 TikToks daily. Sometimes I feel that they are addicted, and couldn’t delete TikTok if they tried. I do believe that TikTok and other social medias such as Instagram and Snapchat are fun to connect with other people on, and express yourself. But having schools use social medias seems to me like helping kids get addicted to it. Furthermore, some kids do not have phones and cannot access social media, so they would not be able to take part and would feel excluded.
Ezra Beidler-Shenk (J.R. Masterman)
To me when I first read this article, my mind was blown. I had no idea of how many people used TikTok and I thought maybe there are some benefits of using the app in schools. I personally think that if TikTok or any type of social media were introduced at our school and allowed during school time, there would be no controlling it. I think that it would do more harm than good. I think that there would be bullying about certain posts, kids spending way too much time on their phones during school, and other things that distract them from being in a healthy learning environment.
Tori Okorodudu (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Tik Tok has been proven to be a mostly net positive app, but I feel that it would be best if we kept Tik Tok and other social media platforms separate from our school life. Kids from all ages across many areas are addicted to Tik Tok, being on it for hours at a time and making numerous videos a day. While it may bring groups together, I feel as though it has become almost a habit for groups to make a Tik Tok if they have “nothing else to do” instead of socializing with one another. If there are Social media based groups at school, that would be encouraging students to spend more time on those apps, which can lead to kids revolving their lives around it. Also, while Tik Tok draws in people from many areas, I don’t think it is the most diverse platform. While scrolling through, many of the TikTokers are young, caucasian girls. I have experienced dealing with a friend that has felt that, because of her race, she can’t do a certain trend (in this case, cosplay) in fear of being bullied or ridiculed. Another negative is that many people, specifically girls, experience body image issues because of many famous TikTokers who have unrealistic body types. While TikTok is widely accepted by our generation, I think there are many negative aspects that we should not bring to school. We should focus on building better group oriented relationships, and we shouldn't need an app like TikTok to accomplish that.
Ava O'Nan (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
My school does not allow phone usage and most teachers will confiscate your device if they see you on it during instruction. I think that since teachers take our phones, it teaches us to handle being away from social media when the time is not appropriate. It also helps students pay attention because they are not worrying about who is snapchatting them or texting them. I don’t believe social media could be a tool for learning in schools. Phones and social media are very distracting in a learning environment. When kids have their phones lying out on their desks or on their laps they are going to be tempted to use it which diverts them from what the teacher is trying to teach. Most kids would rather scroll through Tik-Tok or Instagram than pay attention in class. Social media is mainly used for entertainment or socialization with friends when they are used in school. There is a time and place for everything and school is not the time for social media.
Lily Sussman (J.R. Masterman)
The answer to this question is straightforward to me, I think TikTok and school are two totally different things and should be kept that way. TikTok is a trendy app that students may use to connect or use when they are bored and in need of something to occupy them. Its main purpose is entertainment. It would be odd and out of place to mix school with it. I don’t see how becoming TikTok famous relates to education. It is a side endeavor like travel, photography, and dance. It would be as if you were mixing all the colors in the rainbow together. They would make a murky brown eventually.
Vivian (J.R. Masterman)
My school does not exactly see social media as a place for learning. The only thing the teachers really use is Youtube, but besides that there isn’t really anything. I think using social media, though, could be a great way for teachers to engage with students, although there probably wouldn’t be enough boundaries for people, so everyone's obviously just going to do whatever they want. I don’t really use TikTok, but I know what it is. It’s okay, I guess. I think in the end, schools shouldn’t into social media because it would be too confusing, but they could and it could be a good experience, depending on what happens and how students use it.
Josiah White (J. R. Masterman)
My school doesn’t use any social media for school. I don’t really see the point of using social media as a way to share things with students because there are better alternatives such as google classroom that in my opinion work better anyway. If someone wanted to know the homework or get the answers then they should just text the other person instead of going on Instagram and getting distracted. Even in the article social media wasn’t being used for school so much as for getting “famous"
Ryan Zou (J. R. Masterman)
Our school doesn't see social media as a tool for learning because our school isn't related to social media. As far as using our teachers using social media in the education process, they don't. Most of the people I know don't have that much connection to social media. I don't think teachers should use social media to engage with us because we don't use social media as much as other students. I can't say if I wanted my school to integrate social media because I don't have a strong opinion about it. I am not familiar with TikTok at all. Even if many teachers view TikTok as a positive, I don't care about it because I don't use the said platform. I believe social media should be separated from education for the better if I had to take a stand. I have no suggestions on how and if our school should use social media. Social media isn't giving off any vibes that attract me so far. Even if I had any ideas, I have no say in whether or not schools should use social media.
Gregory Sevrukov (J.R. Masterman)
In my opinion, social media can be helpful. You can communicate with your friends and keep up with the newest trends. Only sometimes does it cause danger. Tik Tok, for example, has a very fun and musical way of representing yourself and others. I don’t see anything wrong with it. In fact, I would recommend schools to use Tik Tok to have a fun way of posting assignments or study guides. Besides Tik Tok, there is Instagram and Snapchat. Our school uses Instagram. We have many accounts, each referring to a different topic or club. To be honest, it helps. Sometimes I forget things and when I look through the stories I see reminders about school work or meetings. Social media might be dangerous sometimes, but it really helps.
Sarah (J.R. Masterman)
In my opinion, social media has many uses. It is not just for laughs, or communication, or entertainment, or learning, but blend of them all. It is seen as a distraction in my school, and many others, but it had potential to be used. For example, we will watch YouTube videos in class to learn, but we don't use twitter, facebook, instagram, or TikTok. It could possibly be used, but I am not very strongly opinionated on it. Like I said, it has potential, but it is widely thought of as bad, and that viewpoint could be hard to change in many schools. I just think that social media can be mixed with school, but it must be done carefully.
Zach Comet (HHHS)
I am familiar with TikTok. I don’t like TikTok but I don’t know why. I think it is just a useless app that takes up space on your phone. Schools should use Discord or Instagram so students can connect with each other if they don’t have a phone or if they cannot afford the phone service.
Kaden Comet (HHHS)
The only way the teachers at my school use social media is YouTube, and I don’t blame them. After briefly seeing the stuff that is posted on TikTok I want nothing to do with it. The schools that are allowing it are not using it for educational purposes, they use it to make students “famous.” YouTube should be the only form of social media, except for a few others that are made for educating.
Corbin Comet (HHHS)
I don't think social media can help in the classroom. Social media is mostly used to communicate with friends or its used just for laughs there's not that much learning going on. In my school social media is not a tool used for learning because it's considered a distraction and I agree. The app "TikTok" is a comedic app. I don't have on my phone but my siblings and I think its funny. It's got a lot of funny stuff.
Lucas Comet (HHHS)
I believe that some social media can be used to help educate the classroom, like YouTube videos, however, not all of it should be used. I don’t see how using Twitter or Facebook (both websites for communication) could help the classroom scene. If anything, it could cause stress or even distractions for students. Yes, I’m familiar with Tik Tok but don’t use it or have an account. However, I don’t think teachers should use social media other than YouTube.
Sydney Comet (HHs)
At my school social media is seen as a distraction to the students, my school blocks ever social media site. I have to put my VPN on just to look something up on the internet or to check a snap chat. Blocking everything is their way of trying to keep the students off of their phones, but I can go on Kahoot to study because of it. I have never tried to go on TikTok at school but I am pretty sure that my school would block it. The only time we use social media in school is if we watch a video on Youtube.
Brianna K. (J.R Masterman)
@Sydney Comet Thats pretty sad. My school does the same and I really don't get the point. Other kids just turn on their hotspot and then everyone goes onto Instagram and TikTok. So in the end all they're doing is just making it slightly harder to access social media.
skylar comet (HHHS)
I think the answer to this question is very easy. No I don't think social media can help learning growth in schools. The only time it really helps is when people are sending answers to homework to each other. Other then that there is really no use for it when it comes to learning. No kid is going to want to use a social media platform to do homework or learn as that is what they often use to escape or get a break from homework. It might work for a couple students who really want to learn and do good but realistically most kids do not have that kind of motivation and will most likely end up getting distracted.
Sophie, Comet (Hanover Horton)
In my school our teachers don't really use social media with learning. There are some apps we are allowed to use like google docs or google classroom, but these aren't really social media. Some teachers use “Remind” , which is a certain number that people can text so they get reminders of their classes. Other than this, teachers often use any social media with learning.
Megan Comet (HHHS)
Social Media: The school that I attend uses social media, however the school tries to block social media during school hours. The school itself has social media accounts, but it’s more used to share information that’s going on in our district. I ,personally, am not familiar with TikTok. This app to me, is not effective. It is not a way to spread information.
cayla comet (hanover)
I think social media can have a positive learning experience in schools. For example, the internet is full of everything and you can look up and find everything. Also, kids use the calculator. When i'm in class and I don't learn or comprehend something I watch it on YouTube and re learn it. I also read interesting articles and listen to audio books on my phone.
EmilyComet (HHHS)
Our school doesn’t really use social media to get students to interact. Instead we can’t have our phones out during school. My parents use snapchat to talk with my siblings and to take funny pictures, but teachers do not use it to interact with students. I think Tik Tok teaches students how to interact with each other and have fun. I think students are on their phones too much and focus on drama more than success.
Joe Comet (HHHS)
Yes, because you can use examples of things that happen on social media for a class like health or personal wellness. Some people don't do good things online but somethings online are uplifting and are things that wouldn't be bad for highschools to see. Some people don't like social media because of other reasons but if you only look at positive things, then social media won't be bad for you.
