A lesson for any government that tries to keep an unpopular tyrant in power in a country whose citizens are armed as well as the Cartel. IMHO

With this type of potential threat occurring just south of our border, Syria certainly doesn’t merit the attention it’s getting in the news.

@NJJACK How many times have we all thought the same thing? Just why is it that we can fight a war in two or three countries so far away but allow the Cartel to not only exist in Mexico, but to sell drugs across our border so that the DEA can have jobs? Not only that but they allow one group leeway for turning info on another. The system itself is inefficient and corrupt in the sense that if Mexican officials take bribes and look the other way out of fear to protect their families do ours do so as well? If after all the money and lives lost in the Drug War and no victory in sight we need to legalize and spend money on rehab and reform. Hurt the pushers and Cartel where it hurts... the wallet.

Sighs with relief? Is that really the best headline you could come up with for this terrible series of events?

Want to see this violence stop, USA? Stop consuming the drugs that fuel it.

Close the borders into the US, now.

It was stupid of th government to send a bunch of poorly armed soldiers to apprehend a drug lords son who has a private army. We shall see if the President of Mexico is serious about justice. But then again , who am I , a citizen of a corrupt Untied States run by a criminal- coward for all the world to see.

This was the worst decision that the city could have made. It is the same reason that American's do not negotiate with terrorist. Once you do the treats will never stop.

People have suggested that the Mexican government end the 'war' and grant amnesty to the drug lord. The idea being that the fighting would then stop. Sad to say I doubt it would. The Cartels all but control large areas of Mexico so why on earth would they want to give that up? Through plata o plomo (silver or lead) they have many, many people in the military, police, and government. Mexico is bordering on the edge of becoming a failed state.

Perhaps a well orchestrated staging. The Mexican government needed to comply with the extradition request from the US, they also had to uphold their commitment to keep things cool with the cartel. Staging an amateurish operation and coming to a face off seems a perfect solution to keeping two opposing parties in check. I’m just construing.

The Mexican government is in a tough spot now that they have negotiated with terrorists- these cartels are terrorists. Unfortunately, the best solution is also the worst solution- a concentrated effort by the people of Mexico to wage war on the cartels. The Mexican government can ‘market’ the war as a fight for freedom or some other positive spin to get the people on their side. Of course, the cartels will have the advantage, but as the government get some victories under its belt the terrorists will lose local support. The alternative is to lose control of the country to the ever increasing power of the cartels. If a more peaceful solution is required, it would require a Herculean effort to stem the demand of drugs to starve the cartels out. This is something that has been going on for decades, with no real dent made in the war on drugs. Therefore, this method is largely a paper tiger. I am not a fan of violence, but I recognize it’s value in certain situations. Unfortunately, peaceful disobedience only worlds against lithic governments, not shadowy criminal organizations.
