I'm visiting NYC and am completely addicted to the US version of Shameless !! why no one has mentioned this so believable off the charts show!! william h macy IS frank!!! what a job, right?? the cast and scripts are so impressive and the stories are sensational I mean I'm not even leaving the apt to watch it!! season 6 is the one to watch!! start there! love it so much! and ofcourse the crown will return which is another brilliant drama with such high standards in every way!! hurrah I love netflix!!!

When I upgraded my TV to a Dolby Vision HDR 4k set, there was nothing for me to watch in the new formats until Netflix offered to upgrade my account to whatever they call it for $16 a month. I was very happy with the visual upgrade -- to see something made in Dolby Vision is pretty amazing. But lately, even though most everything original they put up is in DV or HDR, the content itself is painfully bad. Why they choose to bury themselves in debt to produce such utter rubbish defies explanation.

Unbelievable it’s quite a strong series. I thoroughly enjoyed it but it’s slow going and it’s not easy. I was pleasantly surprised it was on the list. Really good performances!
Paula (Reston)
@Lany I thought it was really good overall. Good writing, excellent acting, maybe the slow is the element that keeps you wanting more but at the same time the series is filled with details.
Ginger (Delaware)
I'm always looking for things to watch, I saw, "The Highwaymen" and liked it, might as well try some of the other "top ten" out and see what I think. I don't want to spend the rest of my life watching British mystery re-runs.
Mike (Palm Springs)
They do have star ratings.
Mark Sprecher (Los Angeles)
How sad that Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece “Roma” couldn’t crack the Top 10 for original movies on Netflix. But, right, it isn’t in English, so it was always going to appeal to a niche audience. That, and the best attempt at completing Orson’s Welles’ “The Other Side of the Wind” were the best movies that I saw last year, and along with Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood” and Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” the best I’ve seen so far this year.
TJ (MN)
@Mark Sprecher the article indicated that the Netflix response was that these were highlights and not a top 10 list. That said, you are probably right about the average American viewer turning away from foreign language films.
Polaris (North Star)
How can Bojack Horseman not be #1?
Ardyth (San Diego)
Of the top ten movies or television series, I have only seen one of each, Stranger Things and Tall Girl...both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Love Netflix...quality, creative and reasonably priced. Cable locks you in and holds you hostage with what you want while forcing you to pay for what you don’t. I’m waiting for the day when better options emerge.
michael (Los angeles)
I just checked the Rotten Tomato scores for the top 10 movies listed here on Netflix, and only 2 are higher than 80% positive reviews, most are below 50%. Either critics are far off or Netflix viewers will watch just about anything. I haven't checked the scores for the TV shows.
Ardyth (San Diego)
@michael I don’t choose my entertainment from some nebulous list of what’s popular. I am distinctly unique and respect the options Netflix offers. Besides—my life is not lived completely outside of myself.
Larry McCallum (Victoria, BC)
“High school comedies are especially popular on the service.” An indication that Netflix is primarily a babysitter. Hence the Disneyesque Stranger Things. The public library has far more interesting movies. But that takes effort.
SteveRR (CA)
@Larry McCallum Stranger Things has a Rotten Tomatoes favorability score of 97% with 87 critics reporting and a personal viewer favorability of 96%. Maybe it is not Stranger Things after all?
Walter White (albuquerque)
What geography are the viewing numbers based on? Doubt it's just USA?
Tortuga (Headwall, CO)
What, no Longmire?
Beth A (Boulder, CO)
Do they count me as a viewer of Murder Mystery, even though I turned it off ten minutes in (because it was truly dreadful)? How about a count of how many people actually watched the dreck through to its end?
Marty Ziech
@Beth A It says on the chart in the article "Viewers who watched at least 70 percent of a movie or episode were counted."
Ardyth (San Diego)
@Beth A Not surprised that anything associated with Adam Sandler is a drudge...
Aristotle (SOCAL)
I find most Nexflix movies to be boring at best, and the only series on the list I strongly recommend is "Dead to Me." It's a comedic drama that's well written and acted. Can't wait for season 2.
Russ (My couch)
Ozark is riveting, I highly recommend it. Next season is supposed to be released sometime in 2020
MTB (Asheville)
Dark, Peaky Blinders, The Dark Crystal...those are some great Netflix originals.
Pat (Somewhere)
Great, now get rid of those infernal auto-play previews.
Michel (Portland ,Oregon)
@Pat I also hate that auto noise.
NotDeadYet (Portland)
@Michel Turn off your sound when scrolling through.
Daniel Robbins (NYC)
@Pat You do have the option to turn off the auto-play in your settings from your pc or mac.
Bridgman (Devon, Pa.)
A good takeaway from this is to never go by the numbers, especially when they've been cooked a little. Does anyone remember anything about "Birdbox" beside the highly improbable driving-by-GPS device scene?
Mike (Palm Springs)
Of course I do. I remember the entire movie.
JJ (CT)
I wish Netflix would go back to their star ratings rather than trying tell what they think I'd like to watch. They are seldom right. So much time wasted.
pk (Columbus OH)
BRING BACK THE COMMENTS SECTION!!! The most arrogant thing Netflix did was remove any critical discussion about their content. I would be more inclined to give these Netflix Originals a try if I could get idea of what I was going to watch or be warned not to prematurely avoid something based on it's title. I'm not sure how they are still in business, aren't they losing a lot of money? Can't keep cranking out these B-grade films forever.
Suzanne (California)
Would like to see Netflix Top 10 lists by a few age groups, since I am old enough not to care one whit about high or college nonsense, but crave Netflix series like The Crown or Unbelievable. I assume Netflix is sharing top 10 lists to help viewers find shows people like (among other reasons). Help different age groups find entertainment that appeals to them.
Ron (Long Branch NJ)
I guess it's cheaper for Netflix to produce their own shows than to try and provide a good library of past or recent films. They do have a fair number of very recent films, but it seems like they've abandoned classic films and have less of them available every year. I've subscribed for many years but am honestly thinking about cancelling.
RM (Brooklyn)
Very surprised to see Casa de Papel (AKA Money Heist, in its idiotically simple english translation) in third place. It's a really fun, satisfying show with an excellent cast. I recommend especially the first two (narratively conjoined) seasons.
John (California)
The most entertaining criminal drama which includes politics at the highest levels is The Blacklist. Season 6. Loved it and I'm out of episodes.
N. Smith (New York City)
As a German-speaker I am pleased when Netflix adds shows like "Skylines", "Dogs of Berlin" and "Criminal: Germany" to their roster -- and their offerings in French films and TV programs are also worth noting. That said, I found "Stranger Things" and most of the other top movies and television series rather boring by contrast. Nevertheless as far as streaming goes, it's a good investment.
T Montoya (ABQ)
@N. Smith Stranger Things is shockingly good for the right demographic (guys that grew up in the 80s). Maybe similar to Good Bye, Lenin?
N. Smith (New York City)
@T Montoya As far as "Stranger Things" is concerned, I don't know about demographics -- but it certainly is a matter of taste. That said, "Goodbye, Lenin" was certainly closer to mine, probably because I'm a Berliner.
Wayne Fuller (Concord, NH)
Unfortunately, my wife and myself do not follow the popular trends and thus the exceptional shows we find on Netflixs don't show up on the top viewer list. (But hey, I never made it through one episode of the Apprentice or Games of Thrones so I'm not much of a gauge of popular taste). However, I'm thrilled that I've been able to see Babylon Berlin, the Kominsky Method, 7 Seconds, Generation War, Charite at War, Unbelievable, Quicksand, and Shitsel over the past several months. These international and thoughtful programs keep us tuned in and happy with this service.
Mike (Palm Springs)
Criminal: UK/France/Germany/Spain are all excellent.
Simon DelMonte (Queens NY)
If only I knew how The Dark Crystal and Series of Unfortunate Events did. I love Stranger Things, like children of the 80s everywhere, but those other two shows are better and I feel like no one was watching.
Daniel Robbins (NYC)
@Simon DelMonte -- Maybe I missed something, but I found the Dark Crystal to by horribly boring -- and unlike the original film (which I can still watch in awe) -- found the material very juvenile. Perhaps I'll look again over the weekend and see what I missed.
Von Jones (NYC)
I’ve been watching MONEY HEIST, which has some of the best acting and writing I’ve seen on tv. I highly recommend it.
Suzanne Wheat (North Carolina)
I am a Netflix subscriber and I am close to exhausting everything that I care to watch. I view a lot of foreign language films but increasingly they are dubbed which I hate because I love working on my language skills and learn a great deal. I subscribe to DVD service which has a better selection but the mail is slow where I live. Going back to Amazon Prime. I fired my cable provider long ago and ditched the TV.
Vince Verlaan (Vancouver Canada)
@Suzanne Wheat Make sure to watch Dogman
Still Waiting... (SL, UT)
I think Bird Box is the best movie Netflix has produced.
Compte Foixx (NYC)
Of the top titles mentioned, I watched The Highwaymen and Murder Mystery only. The rest I couldn't stomach watching even a scene of a single episode.
Bill (Atlanta)
Rather surprised at some series that were not in the top 10, specifically The Ozarks and Black Mirror. That said, I would be interested to see how these series would be ranked if it looked at people who watch 70% or more of the entire series or at least a season as opposed to 70% of a single episode.
Brennan (New Orleans)
@Bill I agree, Both Ozark and Black Mirror are genuinely incredible productions. I think a lot of it has to do with the primary demographic of Netflix viewers. As the article mentioned, it's largely comprised of younger viewers, likely the 16-21 age group. The age group most enamored by topics like social media, lust/sex, adam sandler comedies... That would explain why "The Perfect Date", "Tall Girl", "Secret Obsession", etc, etc are at the top of the list. I've have not seen many of the top 10 ten in both categories (barring stranger things and la casa de papel). But I can definitely say there are shows that are truly incredible that I think should've been on there. Altered Carbon, Sense8, and Black Spot, among many others. But it is interesting to see any data at all from Netflix concerning viewership.
Wayne Fuller (Concord, NH)
@Bill I forgot to mention Black Mirror in my list of favorites. What a great series. Thanks for mentioning it.
Orlando Balcacer (New York New York)
Thanks for mentioning Ozark it has a great cast of actors in addition to the great story. This show was clearly over looked. It’s one of the best original series on Netflix.
