Why Is It Important for People With Different Political Beliefs to Talk to Each Other?

I was honestly surprised that people weren’t attacking and were debating civilly with one another. Whenever a debate happens in school, or I witness a political debate outside of school, it always seems to get heated, with people yelling over one another and no one really seems to stop and listen. Furthermore, people tend to follow a certain belief because it’s the trend and then switch up when it’s not a trend anymore, which happens often since social media is such a big part of our lives. I think it is really important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other in order to learn from one another, not just try to persuade people. Just as Susan Bosco said in the article, “I don’t think the purpose of this conference was to change people’s minds. I think the purpose of this conference was to get people to accept each other’s points of view in a civil manner.” I completely agree and think this conference really opened the eyes of some, even if their minds didn’t change, but they were able to make points as to why they believed what they believed.

@Maria, Block 1 Having discussions with friends at the lunch table reminds me of this conference in the way that we all share our different experiences and learn from them. I feel like I have learned so much from my friends and looked at things from a different perspective due to these discussions that come up during lunch. I believe it’s also important to listen to other people’s beliefs and perspectives in a civil way to have a broader view of the world, and you’re not so narrow-minded, which definitely helps when trying to make good decisions.

We live in this social media bubble where the things you see on the internet are curated to agree with you, and you see people with the same beliefs, and it radicalizes the other side. So it's very important to actually talk to REAL people and see why they believe what they do, most cases they aren't crazy radicals, but regular Americans just like you and me. We need to learn from each other to develop empathy, and truly understand the other side we choose to fight against and better understand how others see our own side. ReplyRecommendShare

I believe it is essential for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other. This interaction can allow them to get a more well-rounded view of each other’s beliefs and positions. If people choose not to interact with people of different political beliefs, they would only be exposed to one perspective and would be tunnel-visioned. Experience is a crucial part of identity, and interacting with those who have had different life experiences is one of the best ways to reach mutual understandings. We can reap many benefits from interaction with people who have different political beliefs. People with different opinions, experiences, and beliefs have different perspectives and varied definitions of ‘importance.’ For example, with presidential elections, even within parties, candidates with different political beliefs debate and interact with each other. Spectators, from watching the interaction, may decide to nominate a separate candidate from their initial nominee choice. Watching the interaction between the candidates with different political beliefs can influence a spectator’s opinion and ultimate decision. The more interaction between people with different political beliefs, the more likely parties will reach a good, long-lasting solution.

@Olivia Tan I agree that interactions with different people contributes to a well-rounded personality and view of the world, since we all learn from one another. I love how you stated that experience is a crucial part of one's identity, and I think it is so true. I definitely wouldn't be the same person if I went through different experiences in life. I also like how you brought up the example of presidential elections, and how people within the same party debate and have disagreements. Yet they can come to a consensus after learning from one another.

I think this experiment is a good way for liberals and conservatives to view opposing ideas. Listening to other peoples voices and considering opposing political opinions is very important, liberal and conservative ideologies themselves are fundamentally different and in this experiment people could converse with one another about the facts, feelings, and experiences motivating partisan policies. With a face to face conversation instead of the now common arguments over the internet, understanding and realizations occur. I think that this simple act of talking is a positive way to move forward in this extremely polarized climate.

I think this Article does a great job of expressing how important it is to talk to other people, and more then that, talk to people with different views then your own. When people with different ideas come together they come out with a new understanding, although their ideas and beliefs might not change they understand why those other beliefs exist. It makes life a lot easier if you can have a level of understanding with those who you different from.
Anna (Glen Ellyn, IL)
The article examines an experiment done with a group of people, all who have different political beliefs on both ends of the spectrum. I believe that it is incredibly important for people to exchange political beliefs and discuss them with those who think differently. Although people have the right to believe what they think is best and fight for those beliefs, I think that often times there is a common ground between those two ends of the spectrum. That middle ground is key to a balanced society, where each party gets part of what they want while also making sacrifices for the other. Discussing political beliefs with others helps find that area that no one seems to talk about, and may find a balance between people who appear to have opposite beliefs when it comes to politics. Additionally, avoiding conversations with people who think different leads to a society that is very close-minded, and with that our advancement as a country will go no where.
Ashley M. (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn, IL)
I think it is critically important to talk to people who have different political views from you. Only being surrounded by people who agree with your political views will cause us as Americans to be too one-sided when looking at issues, even though every issue has two sides to it. Listening to opposing viewpoints will keep us more open-minded. Even if we are strictly for a specific party or ideology, it is important to what people from the other side of the isle think to observe political issues from a different perspective. Healthy debate is a normal part of politics, and it is something that we simply cannot avoid in society, even if we try.

Sharing political views with one another is a very important aspect of our society. We have freedom of speech and because this is a democratic country, we are also able to vote for who we would like to. My friends and I are able to have political conversations and we all have different beliefs and educate ourselves on current events. This is good because while we might not be able to change each others minds on a certain issue, at least we are able to open up point of views and share personal thoughts with one another. It is so important to express views without being hostile towards each other, which our country needs to work on. So, open up your point of view, listen to the other sides of the argument, and become educated before bashing someone else for their thoughts. :)
Megan P. (Glenbard West, Glen Ellyn, IL)
I do believe it’s important to talk about political beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however talking about politics and being open-minded towards other people’s opinions can lead to being more educated and more awareness of others beliefs and why they have their own opinion. Based on experience, I can admit that I’ve been wrong before and my mind has been changed through sharing beliefs and opinions, therefore I do believe that it is extremely important to talk about political beliefs because it can allow you to see the point of view of people in different positions. In order for sharing the beliefs to make a difference rather than arguing political opinions, they should be discussed. Allowing for all sides to share and be heard, while listening and seeing the point of view of others without trying to counter act what they said with their own beliefs
Kemi (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn)
I think that it is extremely important that people with different political beliefs and views talk to each other because if people don’t talk then your always only hearing one side of the story. I can understand of course it can be difficult to be good friends with someone with different political beliefs because your political views often relate to people’s livelihood and the way you see the world. With that all being said you can become very narrow-minded by surrounding yourself with people you think the exact same way as you cause your missing a whole another side of thinking and discussing problems and views on things can sometimes lead to a middle ground or a compromise which is always better then staying close minded.
Zulixa (Florida)
I think that it's important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because if people don't talk they won't get the different point of views from others and why they believe that political view. People will become more narrow-minded and start to only agree with their own political beliefs and things they think the government should do. This is a problem because that person with always see another persons views as wrong. Also people never know whether the person they are talking that has different political beliefs but there's a possible that they have a similar belief on a certain subject/idea. It's important to share views because you become more open-minded and can understand and respect that persons belief.
Ayanna (Florida)
It’s important for people with different political views to talk to each other because somewhere in the conversation they might share a common thought or view on something going or that needs to happen in our government. Even though all parties have different views on different subjects, it’s possible to come to a compromise, and it’s always nice to hear someone else’s opinion a certain things. If political parties keep arguing over certain things nothing will ever get done. Different political parties need to meet close to half way on things and learn how to express their opinion in a respectful and calm way.
Roxy (Florida)
I think it is important for people of different political parties to talk because then you get different views on subjects that you might not that thought about. You can ask them why they think that way and possibly understand their thought process.
Lilu Trueschel (Booker High School,FL)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to one another because if you don’t, you will only ever believe in one thing. There is no political diversity if you only socialize with people who have the same views as you. You need to talk to others that don’t share your views because then you can understand why certain people believe the opposite of you. Many people only socialize with people who have the same views as them because they feel uncomfortable talking to people with different views.
Matt (Greenwich High School CT)
I think that it is a good idea to try and talk to others who may disagree with your opinion, as you may start to find different perspectives on different topics. This is a good way to try and learn something new about the world, and see how others in a different position than you view the world. I think that a big issue with people is that they tend to try and silence the people/opinions that they disagree with, which doesn't help them try to form a formal discussion. I do think that there are people in the world who try and make formal discussion, but the majority should start, so as a society we move forward.
Ryder Klein (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Having read the article, I think that it was a great idea to create a group with such a wide range of opinions. A big problem with modern society is that with the new technology and social media, a lot of conversations lose that personal touch. It’s easier to see people not as people, but just as their opinions. And it’s a lot easier to argue against an idea than it is a person. One point the article makes clear is the power of anecdotes. In one debate about Medicare, one woman talks about how it saved her father’s life after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Someone replied “But now I can’t argue because of what your dad dealt with.” When you can talk to people with different opinions, hear their stories, see their faces, you learn something important: behind every opinion is a face and a story, and you should never judge someone based on just the opinion.
Jadah Armour (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
Politics, Politics, Politics. Such a sensitive and hot topic in this day and age. Everyone has different views in this world on politics. Differences in opinion in our families and even or friend groups. Though we all love each other we all may have very different opinions . It is important and healthy to be able to talk about our different political views in a very rational way. Within the Article it talks about a weekend retreat in Dallas where 526 representatives were invited to prove that there was a better way to disagree with each other about their political opinions. “You have to learn to listen to them…. “They bring their life experience, their observations. Going over 55 page briefs the representatives were able to talk and listen to one another opinions about politics, whether they agreed or not. It wasn't about drilling one to see your side of the argument, or to bash people for what they think but for the simple fact that we as people all have different views on politics. For us to talk about it among one another in this day and age is important. We have to get over the wall of being too sensitive about talking amongst controversial things. Especially Politics.
Charlotte Todd (Hoggard High School)
We live in a world of strong opinions, this may seem necessary and a positive thing, but only to a certain extent. My friend group has divided beliefs, but I see the way those of differing opinions think when we have conversations about politics. However not everybody knows how to keep their cool during political discussions, these talks get heated and never end in anyone's favor. The sad part is that in school these kind of people think it's okay to yell, fight , and shove their political beliefs down your throat. I shouldn't have to get screamed at by 14 year old students who refuse to have a civil conversation without pettiness or sarcasm. I feel as if just listening to the other side will give you more knowledge, whether it backs up your ideas or makes you question something. If only we could put our stubbornness aside and simply talk.
Jaqueline (Hays, KS)
I believe it is important to talk the opposing side so you can get two viewpoints on the issue. Having more knowledge on the political issue will help you get a deeper understanding of the issue and how it affects others. To learn you have to listen. When someone tells you how the issue is affected them or what problems they have with the presidents running it is good to take it into consideration before you go cast your vote. I can understand how hard it could be talking to someone with a different view with getting into argument. It is important to stay calm and compassionate. I would love to attend America in One Room because I want to hear from all sides. I believe it would teach me that I don't have to agree with that person's opinion but that I can accept it.
Sydney Pugh (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Jaqueline For me, I find it hard to see the side of people who don't find alone time enjoyable. I've been using alone time as a way to recharge, get new ideas, and relax for as long as I can remember. I can also attest to the article that using this alone time has prevented me from developing filler friendships. In only spending quality time with the friends who mean the most to me, spread out over a period of time, it prevents me and my friends from burning out, and stops clingy and sometimes possessive friendships from occurring. I'd much rather spend time by myself where I can do what I'd like, instead of having to do what people around me want. This time for me is often small due to my schedule, but I believe it's very important to dedicate some time every week to focus on just yourself, and be selfish in the best way possible. I'll often spend this time outside on the trampoline, walking my dog, riding my bike, or any other way that allows me to take some time to just think. Or, I'll spend this time watching Netflix, reading a cheesy book, or listening to music to help ease me of my stress. After my alone time, I feel as fresh as ever, and I'm ready to take on whatever life throws at me next.
Sydney Pugh (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Jaqueline I one hundred percent agree with everything you've had to say about this article. It's hard to even consider that people besides yourself have different opinions, or why it's so hard for someone else to see your point of view of the situation. Your words, "To learn you have to listen." say it perfectly. I think the image of two people standing on opposite sides of a 9/6 demonstrate this point perfectly. We're all at different points and positions in life, and you can't always see what the other side is seeing. The best way to help see each other's side is to communicate, and most importantly listen. We'll never see each other's side until we listen, which is why these types of things are so important.
Will Fatzinger (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
People with different political beliefs in a conversation are known to argue and sometimes get violent, but if you get the right group of people you can have a nice talk about politics and maybe even open up some peoples minds about the different views. Having a conversation about politics can change people's perspective on what they think and that might be a positive or negative thing. If people didn't sit down and have conversations like this than no one would know the other side of the argument/topic and we would stay divided. I think some people's views were positively changed during the conversation. The “America in one room” is shown that people from every corner of the country, every walk of life, wealthy or poor are together having an open conversation about there many different views.
Ava Sauer (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
1/2 It is highly important for people with contrasting political beliefs to talk to each other because this is the only way to truly learn and stay knowledgeable about relevant political issues. Having your beliefs challenged is one of the hardest things to accept, but it is also one of the most crucial things to self growth. One of the participants of the experiment discussed in the article stated, “I don’t think the purpose of this conference was to change people’s minds. I think the purpose of this conference was to get people to accept each other’s points of view in a civil manner,” and I highly agree with this. Sharing political views is now always about changing people’s minds, it’s about having people whose opinions differ from yours understand you and where your opinions originate. Doing this not only allows for both sides the be challenged, but also allows for re-evaluation of the way other people think. It is easy to just dismiss the opposing side of an argument as irrelevant or wrong, but hearing actual people tell stories and discuss their opinions in a non-argumentative, laid-back manner can allow you to see the person and the reasons behind that opinion. In my family, my parents (especially my dad) are more conservative, while the rest of my family leans more liberally. This leads to some very heated discussions, but it is good for me to hear both sides of an issue; oftentimes I find myself torn between what is right and what is wrong.
Kevin O’Malley (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
Talking politics is always seen as a negative thing that causes arguments, and sometimes ruins being with friends or family, because of their different beliefs. This article proves that it can be a positive thing, and can give insight to even some of the most liberal or conservative people, to understand and accept others and their opinions on certain things. I don’t have very strong beliefs on either side, and can’t lie that I really follow politics, but I do know the importance of people coming together to discuss their opinions and issues so that they can get perspective on both sides. This makes it so everyone can make a more educated decision, instead of blindly choosing something because of their party or because they don’t know the other side of the argument. I believe that all people in our society should talk to each other in a friendlier manner, to at least learn to accept others and their opinions. I see how many people in our society don’t share their beliefs, because they are scared of what others will think of them. I think that the political system in our country is broken, in the sense that it makes people go against one another instead of coming together for the common good. The sad truth is that while everyone has an opinion, there are a lot of different ones, and not a right one. In our society the political system we have is the best way to deal with different peoples opinions, but people need to be more understanding of others with different beliefs.
Ava Sauer (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
2/2 While neither side has ever changed their beliefs or values, they both acknowledge that they are more educated from hearing the other side, and it makes it even better when they agree on an issue. Having experienced this, I enjoy the concept discussed in the article. Putting a diverse group of people with completely different beliefs together in a room is an extremely interesting concept, and I am sure that this experience benefited everyone there. The way they described the atmosphere alone, by saying that they barely even discussed Trump and had very chill, open discussions with each other, is revealing to how these types of conversations should be conducted. Staying calm while comparing ideas is the only way to effectively learn from people. If you feel any anger towards the person you are talking to, neither of you will learn anything, and you will most likely be more resolute in your opinions than before. Additionally, using personal anecdotes to tell your side is something that does not happen in debates on TV or online, but is another critical part of sharing your views. Overall, this article is very revealing to the ways that political discussions should be conducted and show the importance of sharing your beliefs with those who do not agree with you.
Hailee Moffett (Bryant Hugh School, AR)
America has reached a level of tension that is undeniable, a metaphorical boiling point. The hatred radiating from both the Democratic and Republican sides is palpable. With the vast influx of media helping mold the impressionable minds of Americans, it is important to discuss the current internal and diplomatic affairs of our country. People are becoming more educated on issues and develop opinions with substantiated backing, coming from whichever side of the aisle they fall. With the left and right further radicalizing, it is important for people of both affiliations to come together in open dialogue to address the current state of American affairs. Creating an avenue for healthy discourse is the most effective way to live out ideal American democracy. People coming together allows each side to express their thoughts and feelings, while letting the opposition process what is being said. The opposition will most likely develop a rebuttal. which allows for more contemplation and engaging debates. In this practice, people gain perspective of the other side; if not changing views, then knowing why that side believes what they do. Putting aside partisan politics and seeing another human for what they feel is right and just is to be an American. Open dialogue is helping mediate the change for which the world so desperately needs. If there is any hope for America to address its current issues and downfalls, people must put pride aside and have the conversations needed to be had.
Louise Hobby (Bryant, Arkansas)
It’s important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another to be able to gain insight on candidates opponents or the opposite issues. In order to be able to make a conscious decision when voting, the voter must be knowledgeable about their choice along with the opposing side. Being able to communicate with people of different beliefs gives you another perspective, most likely one you haven’t seen before. Elizabeth Lesser gave a Ted Talk called “Take the Other to Lunch.” Her most insightful point was that two people of opposite views should go out for lunch and have a discussion: Why they view their matter right, why they oppose the other side, and how they could see where the other was coming from. However, Lesser states that the discussion should be civil and respectful, meaning the two people should hear out their counterpart. The be able to gain a more well rounded argument when voting can only be done when people of contracting sides communicate both respectfully and honestly.
Ethan Davis (Bryant High school)
For most people having a set political affiliation is a defining part of their personality. It’s what drives them and is a navigational tool for what their morals are. However, in modern America’s political climate being at its worst, our country lacks unity between the two main political parties. It's always Republicans vs Democrats we don’t take time to settle and talk out our differences. The idea of having a conversation with someone of the opposite political party might sound like a nightmare, but it yields more benefits than one might think. We first need to build a mutual respect for each other. It’s ok to agree to disagree because most of the time someone's political stance is not going to change just from a debate. If we talk to other people with different political beliefs we break down the walls that are put up by our respective political party. We are able to listen to both sides of the argument and possibly create a compromise that will satisfy both parties. Ultimately, talking out our political differences in a civil manner is what America needs so the country can heal and continue to grow.
Bryce Smith (Bryant High School)
I think it is incredibly important to talk and communicate with those who have different political views than I do. Much like the results of the article, I wouldn’t expect anyone to drastically change their political views to match those of their fellow communicators, but talking to those who have different views would allow me to understand the reasons behind others beliefs, which would allow me to see opposing opinions as more sensible. In a school as large as Bryant, many different views are represented and it is easy to stay in touch with other political views. However, in smaller cities, views remain consistent throughout the population, creating an unhealthy environment to anyone who would dare to disagree. Having multiple views present at all times also allows to keep conversations fresh. If everyone believed the same things, there would be no healthy discussions and conversations would get old very quick. Another reason that staying around opposing views is incredibly important is because when I undoubtedly get a job and am around coworkers all the time, I will have learned to be much more tolerant of things that they say that would throw those who are unfamiliar with opposing points for a loop.
Caroline Coates (Bryant High School, AR)
Political parties are a key factor in America’s modern democracy. In fact, someone’s party has grown to be one of the most defining features of their entire personality. Most teenagers are even involved in politics, and many have already established views for themselves. Even though political identity divides Americans into sections, it’s important for each person to listen to a side opposite of theirs, even if they don’t agree with it. To have a firm political identity, you must understand the opposing side. You don’t necessarily have to agree with it, or even like it, but without the other side of reasoning, the whole argument is never truly told. Being a so-called “good” debater when it comes to politics requires the other side’s view because if it didn’t, there would be no rebuttal. An essential skill that politicians or aspiring politicians must learn to adapt to is looking through the eyes of others, or, “putting yourself in their shoes.” They ask themselves how someone else may feel, because if their politics strictly revolved around their own situations, they’d be a lousy politician. Understanding that one person or one group of people does not always represent the majority is crucial, and thinking as so would be classified as selfish. People are constantly learning and growing, no matter their age. Learning from new experiences is what makes people human, and it’s not a negative thing if political perspective changes as a result of it.
Grant Jacuzzi (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
The toxicity in the political atmosphere is potentially at its worst. Americans who have opposing political views often consider it difficult to discuss their beliefs; this is because of how close-minded American citizens have become. However, it is important for individuals with different views on politics to come together and have open minds about others opinions. Although some people such as James Mowrey “didn’t change their minds about anything” after discussing politics, it helps people experience outside opinions about topics to further educate their own ideas, even if they don’t alter their own opinions. In addition to this, social media has increasingly become a great influence when it comes to politics. Social media continues to compel younger generations into believing that those with opposing political views should not even do so much as find common ground, or agree to disagree. Although some people will get inspired by other’s beliefs, it shouldn’t be the mission to change our minds but instead to accept opposing opinions. With all of “fake news” going around, we need to understand that not everyone's political beliefs are the same as the posts we often see; therefore, coming together with others will reveal the truth of the current political parties viewpoints.
Luis Martinez (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
In modern politics it is important to see several perspectives of the same political argument to have a view with minimal bias that is respected by others for both its open mindedness and empathy toward other views. By taking an argument through someone else's perspective we learn to appreciate the thought behind their ideas and widen the lens we see things through. For example, my views on certain topics are not the ideal of my party, but understanding why they’re different as well as why some believe that ideal is important. Surrounding ourselves with diverse people is important to lessen the use of victim-hood that recent politics have begun to use as “evidence” in their arguments. With victim hood being a key tool in modern politics, statements seem to become increasingly dogmatic by not allowing question or rebuttal of their opinions. It is important for everyone to surround themselves with people of different political beliefs to: reduce bias, cut down on dogmatic opinions, and widen the lens we see politics through.
Carly Lidzy (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
If high school has taught me anything, it's that you cannot ague morals. Last year, my English class read _____ then later had a Socratic seminar on the reading. The most asked question during that discussion was "Why?" We talked over the moral dilemma posed by the short story, and explained our differences. But in the end, no one changed their mind. This is not different from the "America in One Room" experiment: each view was represented and we were sent off to discuss why. As humans, our morals are our lives; they are the basis on which we live. And they're all different. Unlike the current political discourse throughout the country, our smaller, younger group of individuals didn't constantly shame one another for our views. We didn't yell, we didn't undermine each other: we simply listened. I learned a great lesson that day, that morals cannot be swayed. To be able to coexist with one another we need to understand one another. That doesn't mean everyone agrees with everyone all the time. That's impossible. But being able to speak civilly and being able to understand why we have a major difference in views is a great step in the right direction. The idea behind "America in One Room" is one that, if given the chance to be widespread, can ultimately change the way we view one another.
Soen McCormick (Hoggard High School in Wilmington,NC)
I believe it is VERY important to talk to those who are politically different to what you believe in. The reason being, is everyone is different in their own party. Meaning, for example, I agree with a lot of what my party has to say, but not everything they say to me I agree on. Which is why what you hear about the opposite party is very stereotypical(The News/Media) and can negatively affect those parties. That being said, having an actual conversation is good to be open minded, and to understand and why they believe is right and what is wrong.
Samuel (Fort Hays State University)
This is one of the greatest acts of civil engagement I have ever heard of. The political discourse in the U.S. is out of hand and there are too few of people who hold the respect to sit down and talk calmly. So seeing that this many different individuals from all sorts of beliefs could manage it, just shows how it is possible for all to handle those conversations mannerly. We all live in this world which is suffering tremendously. Without some form of unity we as people will never be able to fix the problems we caused. When the article also covers that opinions weren't changed and disagreements still existed, but now an understanding is there between the people it sets the right example for what we need. I hope to see this impact the political arena in a great way, especially if social experiments like this continue on. Surely then, the polarization and divide in politics will be bridged towards a more empathetic government. Along with the power behind the changes needing to be made in our society and environment.
Aiden (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
It's crucial to discuss politics with people of differing beliefs. The current political atmosphere is one of intolerance and toxicity. When to political sides don't take the time to understand each others' beliefs, the rift between each side grows larger and larger between political alignments. Many citizens aren't nearly as far liberal or conservative as the politicians that they vote for, and both sides often take different stances for the purpose of conflicting with each other. Political discord also encourages people to expand their world-views, and create more informed world-views.
Brodie H (Bryant High School, Arkansas)
The current political atmosphere might be at its worst point in history, as the media is constantly finding footage of arguments and political dogma turned violent. However, for us to truly be the United States of America, we must agree to disagree. It is remarkable that Americans live in a country where they are not persecuted harshly for their political beliefs, like that of Venezuela. We don’t necessarily have to change our minds, we just need to accept the beliefs of others. Currently, protesters have filled the streets in Hong Kong, where they are uniting against China’s political persecution. China is fighting back, trying to suppress these freedom-hungry people. If Americans today cannot recognize other people and their values, would we not be heading for a possible second Civil War, this time with Democrat vs. Republican, or Liberal vs. Conservative? Looking ahead, we must avoid conflict, and act civil with one another because our varying ideas are what makes us diverse, and that’s what makes us the United States of America.

When people of different views and values talk to eachother it is important because it will help other people understand and value others opinions by listening to them not in hope to change their mind but in hopes just to express their feeling because when this is being talked about it helps the person with the opposite argument understand where they are coming from and the person understands the issue better.
Ethan, Pinkey (Wilmington, NC)
After 9/11, America was in shambles, men and women, democrats and republicans, old and young, Everyone came together in a group of extreme patriotism. It’s times like these that takes every American citizen and forms one America. During this experience people of all political beliefs came together for one weekend where they discussed. It’s important for people to communicate like this and discuss their political beliefs. This is not something that people should talk about behind closed doors. It’s crucial for our continually changing society to listen to other people's thoughts, consider them and allow people to reason and then consider integrating them into your daily thoughts. In Washington’s Farewell address after his second term in office he warned against Americans forming a bipartisan political system but immediately into the Adams administration the Federalist and Democratic Republican partys were born. Washington knew that by creating a bipartisan political system we would be left a nation divided. Not only do people disagree with people of opposite parties but sometimes people are disowned, cut off, or silenced due to their political parties. We need to come together and talk about the things we feel and come together to try and form a stronger union of one country instead of a nation of Democrats and a nation of Republicans.
Marisa (Norwood, MA)
It's important for people with different points of view to talk with one another because it's likely for someone with a specific point of view to only have heard or researched one side of the argument. The danger of this is that once the one-sided argument is fed to those who don't feel the need to see the other side, that argument becomes exaggerated and lies begin to form around it, making it seem more correct than it is. So, it is good that people with different political viewpoints talk and civilly argue, and this experiment proves that.
Natalia Barriga (Massachusetts)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because everyone has a different point of view or opinion. When other talk to people with different perspectives then they themselves might also consider that information and even switch or change their political beliefs. You need to be able to see and understand how other people feel and what their beliefs are to whatever the discussion is about because you need to know more than just your point of view or opinion. This teaches people that politics can be talked about without an argument occuring and everyone can say what the feel without being judged or yelled at by others because people should see the different point of views in a argument or conversation before deciding how they feel.
Danessy (Norwood, Ma)
It's important for people with different political views to talk to each other for many reasons. First of all, if people don't talk politics then was the point of conversation. If people with opposing views on a topic, where one side isn't completely wrong just different then that is so sad. People need to see the dynamics of every topic even if they have chosen a side just so they know how to defend their argument if anything. Or just to understand why a side believes in something to live in a civil manner. At the end of the day, I just don't believe people should live in a world where everyone is so narrow-minded we can't hear others' opinions.
Shivani Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
It’s important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other to gain new perspectives just like James Mowrey, Susan Bosco, and Bonnie Sumner did at the conference. However, talking to someone that has a different point of view could also be beneficial for your own point. In order to really understand what you’re fighting for, you have to understand why others are fighting for the opposite. You can’t blatantly argue your point, because that won’t get the other side to hear what you’re saying. You have to take there point, and argue why that isn’t the truth for you. It is, also, never a good thing to disregard the other side of a matter because it’s rude. All those people at the conference didn’t change there view, but they were more respectful about getting there point across knowing what the other side has been through. They learned that other people have different experiences with a matter then they do.

America is meant to be a place of freedom. Free speech, freedom of the press, freedom to believe want you believe. However, too many times politics have gotten in the way of respecting each other's opinions. It disappoints me to see people bashing one another for their political beliefs. I think it is extremely important to come face-to-face with people we disagree with, and instead of arguing with a faceless opponent through a screen, talk through our reasoning knowing the person in front of us has the right to their opinion, and the right to express it how they want to. Too many times, people go after the character of the person they disagree with, rather than having a civil conversation and hearing each other out. By talking to people with differing beliefs and backgrounds, we get a wider perspective of why others think the way they do, and believe what they believe. My friends, family, and I don't always agree 100% politically, but it is a great reminder that just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean you can't have a strong relationship. I think the "America In One Room" experiment was a success because the point wasn't to change people's minds; it was to give participants a better understanding of the way the other side thinks. I hope participants will keep the event in mind when talking about politics in the future, and I would love to see more things like this happen. America needs a reminder that we are stronger together than apart, even if we disagree.
Payton Otto (MA)
I think it is important for people to share their different opinions on their different political beliefs because it is a good way to learn new information from different people. We can learn why people think these things and maybe stop criticizing people about their political beliefs. We might not change our beliefs or perspectives on politics but we might. But, now we know why people believe the things we do and then maybe we wont criticize them as much. Their could be a lot of dangers if American's don't interact with other people with different political beliefs because then we will just keep criticizing people that don't have the same political beliefs of us. Another danger that could happen is their would be no diversity in politics their would be no talking among the other parties and know one would know why people think the way they do when it comes to politics. Yes, I would consider "American in One Room" a huge success because people are sharing their opinions about why they are in that certain party. For example, the Republican party might have shared their ideas to the Democratic party and gotten a new perspective on politics. I also think it was a success because it was a successful debate were people got to communicate with other people with different political beliefs and just talk about it. I would love to participate in something like this to get people's views on politics and why they think the things the do about it.
maeva ghenam (marseille)
Yes, in my opinion, it's very important to talk to people who have a different Political Beliefs. It's important because, if nobody speak to each other, nothing is gona to change in the world. If several people of different political persuasions discuss with each other, their opinion on some points are likely to change, which makes it possible to have a different vision and therefore a greater oprnmind. Yet, people can not change their opinion, but their learnt many thing and they heard different position, they come out grown up.
Ivan (Paris, France)
Meeting people with different political beliefs is good to develop new perspectives and to compare opinions. Do not compare opinions is bad for the mind and delay the open-mindedness.
Eva (Paris, France)
I think that people think differently and that it's importante to accept the political opinion of each one. Because we all live in different condition, countries with different means.
Ryan Boaz (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I think to ever get to an agreement, it is vital that people with different political beliefs communicate to one another. The media often portrays a small group of the most extreme people from both sides as the views of an entire group, thus creating a huge political turmoil. This political turmoil is very evident in the United States today, and unfortunately it is not getting any better. Talking to people from other political beliefs might let us see that a majority of people are all wanting the same things, and simply saying it in different ways. Seeing the views from another person on a topic and actually listening to them allows us to tear down stereotypes and other biases that often dominant our decision making. When we get the opportunity to listen to another human and the struggles they have experienced, we can begin to understand their view on an issue, and why there is a disagreement in the first place. Listening to another person might even lead you to changing your opinion, or at least rethinking what you already knew. An agreement is all about compromising, and if we never talk to the other side, we will never get anything done. We have to begin the conversation at some point, and I believe the “America in One Room” event is a great way to start.
Lilah Pate (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Everyone is raised differently and has been instilled with different values and political beliefs. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with others, but there can be something wrong with how you approach your difference of opinions. Many people are so certain what they believe is correct that they refuse to even hear the other sides point of view. I have been guilty of this myself. Growing up in Los Angeles, I was always surrounded by like-minded liberals. When I moved to North Carolina it was difficult for me to wrap my head around the fact that there are some people in our world who hate people based on who they love or identify as. It made me sick to my stomach and I would get so mad that I would end up just yelling instead of calmly getting my own point across. It is extremely important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because studies have shown that it increases empathy for others and expands your knowledge on the topic. This is important for reaching compromises because this is what we are going to have to do.
Marisa Silk (Massachusetts)
This article truly portray what we need more of in our society today. The "America in One Room" experiment shows how we can learn from one another by listening to each other's perspectives. The people chosen went in with their perspectives, and were not necessarily going to automatically change their views on subjects, such as health care or immigration. However, it seems that they all did learn how each person came to have their opinions through listening to other's stories and ideas. This is something we need more of in society because in a digital and technological age, we as human beings, come to attack others so quickly if the opinion is not what they want to hear. We have also become very judgmental of what we read or see, and this is something that has become a subconscious part of our minds as we do it without even realizing it. Our society needs more debates, civil discourse, and true communication, rather than communicating through Twitter or Instagram. Our society will continue to evolve if we learn and understand how people come to different opinions. Also, it will cause society to have less conflict and tension when controversial topics are spoken about. If we also talk about politics, in simpler, easier ways then I feel our communication will improve greatly as a society. This experiment should continue as it will help America society as a whole.
Sam McNamara (John T. Hoggard High (Wilmington, NC))
When people from all sorts of different political backgrounds interact with one another, they realize that those vehemently disagree with are still people with emotions, lives, and people they care about. A conversation over politics with someone from a different background helps you realize that everyone simply wants what they believe is best for our nation, and that they mean you no harm. People come from all sorts of different countries, home lives, financial situations, and educational backgrounds, which all shape the way they perceive the best way to help us improve our country. This drastic variation in background leads our population to have a myriad of different political beliefs, some of which we associate very strongly with and others which we could not disagree more with. Without interacting with those who you could not disagree more with, you cannot come to understand them or the background which shapes their beliefs. The empathy and greater understanding of those you disagree with gained from interacting with people from different political backgrounds are what make it worthwhile to speak with people you disagree with.
Nestor F. (J. R. Masterman School)
This article shows that people with different beliefs should come together to discuss topics such as politics with an open mind. I think it's important for people to talk about beliefs they might disagree on or share with one another because if people keep to themselves, they will never be able to truly witness what other people have to say about topics such as international affairs, affordable healthcare, immigration, and economic and environmental issues. As the article states, when diverse people converse, they ignore the roughest beliefs and instead focus on developing counter arguments. In conclusion, Doyne’s article helped me realise that when people from different walks of life meet and talk for some time, they learn about each other and themselves.
Lucas (J.R Masterman)
Interacting with people who don't have the same views or opinions is important. It can help you see other views you couldn't see because you were so biased. It can also help respect other people and their beliefs or political views. Talking with people can also give you a chance to change your opponents view on the subject. In conclusion, I think that the America in one room project is a great idea in that it helps us realize that we can work together and were not trying to go against each other.
Jonah Smith Posner (J.R. Masterman)
I believe that the America in One Room project was an amazing idea in which people get to learn about other people’s thoughts and views on politics. However, I would dislike being part of this project because I hate to start a conversation and end in the same place with both people having the same opinion.
Chelsea (Classical High School, Providence, RI)
I genuinely would not mind discussing major issues occurring in the United States regardless of the other voters coming from multiple parts of the country. I feel as though the conversations would potentially become very intense, creating immense tension due to the fact that politics is a very dense and argumentative topic and many people are very stubborn about their own opinions, which is actually quite reasonable. A topic as broad as politics is something that one should not expect to be completely black and white between everyone, without any gray areas, especially due to the fact that no single person is the same. Everyone has been raised differently, with distinct beliefs, opinions, practices, and so much more, adding to the diversity and debate of politics as a whole. The conversations, overall, would have a great amount of back and forth. In a conversation with someone I vehemently disagree with, I would most likely handle myself quite well. I am very open-minded and comprehensive, understanding that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and have their own subjective reasons for voting for who or what they would like. Bashing the other person for disagreeing would not accomplish anything for either of you, especially if you are both quite conservative. At the end of the day, it is easier to agree to disagree.
emma (providence, ri)
I believe that it is vital to listen to people with differing views. To understand where they are coming from about various political topics. Communication is a means of learning, which is very important but it is very difficult to do so. Last year in my english class, we had a media presentation on any topic we could think of. My group decided to do it on abortion. My group consisted of people that I knew pretty well but there was one member that was extremely pro-life. I knew this was going to be difficult as strongly disagree with this belief. Everyday I dreaded going to that class and working on that project. I hated hearing his outrageous, uncalled for opinions as it was so different from my own. Through all this frustration, I realized that listening to others opposing opinions, strengthens my own. I do believe that every person deserves to have their voice heard, even if it is different from mine.
Yan Sosa (Classical High School)
Living in a mostly democratic state has greatly affected how I perceive politics in the U.S. More specifically, I live in a city where most of my peers (teens to late 30s), are aligned with either the left or the far left. I think that constant discourse that is only held between like minded people only strengthens the polarity between those of different political affiliations. Former president Barack Obama explains this issue perfectly during a segment on a David Letterman interview. He states, "if you are getting all of your information off algorithms on a phone, it’s just reinforcing whatever biases you have …. That’s what is happening with these Facebook pages where more and more people are getting their news from. At a certain point, you just live in a bubble, and that’s part of why our politics is so polarized right now." What Obama is referring to is the lack of proper dissemination with regards to current events on social media websites. This helps stop any conversation before it even happens; it creates an "us versus them" mentality. Some of the issues that people face regarding politics can be emotionally triggering, which only makes it harder to unpack heavy subjects such as deportations, taxing, and healthcare. Putting personal differences aside to reach a mutual agreement is how we close the gap between people with different life experiences in politics. Obstacles such as identity politics, bigotry, etc. discourage open-mindedness and political progress.
Victoria F. (Providence, Rhode Island)
It is so important that people with different political views speak to each other. I feel like by doing so, people can be reminded that despite all views, most of us want the same things or are simply similar to each other. Though we might have different approaches to what will bring the best order to society, we can all agree that we just want what´s best for ourselves and our loved ones. It can be difficult to hear the opposing side to ideas because we ourselves can´t imagine anything different than our own world. To broaden our understandings of other people, and to be challenged are the best ways to grow into ourselves.
Carson Laundry (Classical High School, Providence, RI)
I am a very politically active and engaged person for my age (18). I have the entire current United States memorized, down to each name and political party. I have volunteered for numerous campaigns, and I currently have the honor of serving as an employed page in the State Senate here in Rhode Island. Rhode Island is an extremely Democratic-leaning state, and I am a staunch Democrat in that of itself, as a matter of fact, I identify as a Progressive. I don't know many people with opposing views, but I try and emphasize my friendships and connections with those who I am close with, who I have a difference of opinions with. It helps me to understand the opposing argument a little more, and I feel compromising in opinions and create more bipartisanship, one step at a time, which is something we don't have a lot of nowadays on the national stage. I believe that people with different political views are just what makes America the great country it is. Without disagreements, it's possible and plausible that everyone could be forced to share the same opinion at the expense of respecting their leader, which is straight up dictatorship. In the news, people were attacking Ellen DeGeneres for sitting next to former President George W. Bush at a football game, because ideologically, the two could not be more polar opposite. I feel that friendships like Ellen's and President Bush's are what fuels America to its full potential in this day and age.
Feng (Providence)
I believe that people from differing political beliefs can benefit from talking to one another. Conversation and communication are excellent ways to learn and teach. I completely agree with Fishkin and Diamond and believe that most people, upon meeting one another, do not immediately start debates/discussions with their harshest, most extreme positions. The very few that do may be very stubborn and close-minded, but refusing to listen to them is just as stubborn/close-minded. Listening to the stories of others can be very humbling and is nothing short of critical. If Americans do not interact with people with different beliefs, they would lack insight. They would only understand people who have went through similar experiences. The America in One Room was a success because, although no minds were changed, people learned to sympathize with others in different situations. It was a great learning experience for all of the participants.
Imanol Sanchez (Classical High School)
One of the bigger issues in America is the miscommunication between each other. The hate that we have for each other is all do to misunderstanding. Everybody has their own views for everything, everybody has different experiences that lead to them having that view of belief. The only way to fully understand why and how a person thinks a certain way is to sit down with them and have a heart to heart conversation while keeping an open mind. No matter what you believe in there will be a person with an opposite view, and while you don't have to agree with them it is best to understand where they are coming from. I believe that most people trying to have conversation like this will turn it into an argument or simply start throwing hate at the person because people have become so closed minded. We as a community could live together in harmony and a hate free place if we were to simply keep an open mind and understand that not everyone thinks the same way as you do.

People shows different point of view because they have different experience in life. Political is different topic for me because I never familiar with this topic. I always felt like whoever is in power they can do whatever they want to do for me I am only a simple person who wants to lives a life without complex. I still remember my brother in law and my husband when they start talking about politic it’s not possible to interrupt them because they both have different opinion .It doesn’t mean that they both are wrong the thing is discussing in same topic is not easy to identify the important theme in this political topic. Most of the time it’s hard to control our emotion when you discuss about politics. Politician are savings our country they played very important part in our life which is improve our society and future. We have to respect each other opinion otherwise for lack of information we might be choose wrong person who could make the nation more badly.
Mehejabin LB (YC CLIP)
Everyone has different opinions and beliefs and we should always respect everyone’s different opinion. I think, it’s important for people with different views to talk to each other because this might others that they could be wrong. Someone could teach something they didn’t know. “America in one room was a success, because while not a lot of people changed their opinion, it let them look at other side and see what the people they were supposed to hate are talking about. If we never see things the way other people see things we become closed minded.
Jean Pierre Louis (York college)
In my opinion, I see, it is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other .It is important because they have a different life experience in political .Most of the time ,one of each think as different as other .When they gather to discuss the problematic regarding political ,It is good news .They get opportunities to share different ideas and find a resolution between them .One idea can change the world ,and one idea can support another to do a good compromise .For example ,America as a country multination has different people from all the world .They have different experiences in political .Some of them from Democrat part ,Republic part and independent .That reason is clear to see ,it is important for they meet and sitting down together to expose the problems by analysing to find a solution .
Cyrus Fisher (J. R. Masterman)
People can be very separated about political topics. Without understanding and agreement, progress is difficult. Each side wants their ideas to win. Like a tug of war, both sides go in opposite directions, which leads to no change at all. The way to get around this is for people to interact with people with other political perspectives. Through conversation, we can achieve understanding. If both sides acknowledge the other's opinions, they can decide and agree upon how to move forward.
Megan Comet (HHHS)
Different Political Views: “America in one room” would be considered a success, at least to me. With having a variety of ideas and experiences I think everyone in the group benefited from it. Weather the people left with changing how they felt, or feeling the same as they went in, everyone could at least say that they heard the other side of what they believe in. There are two sides to every story, and sometimes neither one of them are correct. If people don’t express how they feel than it makes it harder for the government to make laws. No one is ever going to be all on the same page, but with sharing ideas, there are ways to compromise on making a solution to the problem.
Jeet Patel (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to one another because this can help them learn why the person’s political beliefs are different and why they are on the side they are on. If we didn’t talk with anybody other people who agree with you, we wouldn’t know the reason people don’t agree with us. Interacting with people who have completely different life experiences than we do can help us learn what they have been through and make them choose the side they did.
Thalia (J.R. Masterman)
When I had a conversation with my friend who I was in an argument with, she helped me realize we had some miscommunications. Thanks to the conversation we worked things out and she is one of my best friends. If I hadn't had that conversation, I wouldn't have had as good of a relationship with her as I have today.
Kathleen S. (J.R. Masterman)
I think it's very important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another. I believe this because it is important to see other people's points of view. Even if in the end no one ends up changing someone's opinion, it is still beneficial. People may learn to be more empathetic to others who are in different situations than them.
Amelia H. (J.R. Masterman)
I believe that even though we all have different opinions, it is definitely important to share. From my own experience, keeping an open mind about other people’s point of view can really help me understand that person better and help to connect with them. I believe that to finalize an opinion you have to have heard the whole story from different perspectives. Interacting with others, can also change someone’s perspective for the better or worse. I find that respecting others opinions can make the conversation more interactive, and can help to bond with that person. I think that if Americans do not interact with others who have different political beliefs, our society will never really change because change can only really happen by learning from others.
Phebe Truong (J.R Masterman)
I had a really old friend who I do not really talk to anymore, but we both had different political views. She was a Republican, and I am a Democrat. We would both bring up our opinions on political problems that were happening recently and try to talk them out and see who had the more reasonable explanations. She would try to persuade me and I would do the same, sometimes I would side with her, and sometimes she would side with my opinions. We had talked about Donald Trump building a wall, I knew that I would definitely not side with her, but I was able to see how she thought about the problem and look at it a different way.
Daliza-LB (YC-CLIP)
Variety is one of the things that makes the world more interesting. Although many people do not like to spend time with others who have different beliefs, this can be a great way to amplify our knowledge and become in a more empathic person who thinks in the feelings of others. None of us has the same point of view regarding political issues, even if we are family, so if a person interacts with another to listen their experiences, it is an amazing step to reduce the violence cause by political discussions. I think that the propose of this experimental assembly with those 526 persons was not intended to change their minds about their preferences, but that the objective was to help them to understand each other’s position and accept that we can all live in peace if we don’t confronted each other pretend that our belief are better than those of our neighbor. At the same point, although it’s known that political is a big topic of debate and even fight between many groups, activities like these are often necessary to learn that we all need to talk less and listen more to have better communication.
Gregory Sevrukov (J.R. Masterman)
In my opinion, it is very important to talk about political opinions. People can learn so much from each other. Arguments or discussions might not change people’s opinions but it might show them politics from a different perspective. For example, this experiment of gathering all these people didn’t change many opinions but it made people look at things from a different perspective. In my past I have had political discussions with elders such as my friend’s dad. Luckily the discussion didn’t get too serious. I learned a lot from his point of view and I think he learned from me too. It’s always good to find out more information even if it won’t change your position. Based on this, I would like to participate in an event like this because I will be able to hear and learn about different people’s opinions about politics.
Sophie, Comet (Hanover Horton)
It is important for people with different political views to talk to each other because they have the chance to tell people their thoughts. Being able to talk to other people with different views may not change their mind, but it can make them have a better understanding as to where you are coming from.
Athanasios Mondlak (J.R. Masterman)
I believe the danger of people with certain political views only talking to others with the same political view is that it doesn’t give people an opportunity to put themselves in other people’s shoes. This helps people see why the other person voted for the other party. If democrats only talked to democrats and republicans only talked to republicans, each of their views would only be amplified by other people’s similar opinions about the same political views. People’s political views being amplified only makes the parties more extreme. This would create a bigger and bigger gap between democrats and republicans which would make it harder to resolve their differences. Also, whenever a candidate is elected, half of the country would always be mad and would dislike the candidate and dislike the other party for electing that candidate. That would make it even harder for both parties to work together.
Praveen (Julia R. Masterman)
I think the “America In One room” was definitely beneficial and successful. The people here came with rigid beliefs and opinions. They had opinions that were not open to argument and they didn’t understand why people with different opinions thought what they did concerning political issues. Although most of the participants didn’t change their political beliefs, they were able to empathize with the people that have different opinions and understand them. If the people remain separate based on political beliefs, it could cause people to break up and trigger fighting along with creating a rift between people who think differently and others. “America In One Room” is a great idea that I would like to take part in because I can offer my opinion and get people to understand things from my point of view. I would also be able to learn a lot about people and their thought processes.
Erika Zeng (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people of differing political beliefs to talk to each other so they can see every perspective and understand one another more clearly. Those with completely different experiences in life can teach someone a lot more about the world than they had previously known. If Americans stick with a group of people who completely agree with them on every single political viewpoint that they have, then there is no public debate, just mere arguments that get nothing done. Furthermore, people are wrong many times in their lives, so without others to help them learn and correct themselves, people may be put into a safe bubble where they believe that their opinion is the only acceptable one. This creates a dangerous mindset, especially in politicians whose jobs are to understand the people they serve.
Oliver K. (Julia R. Masterman)
I have had few experiences in which one person was able to change my mind on any political topic. One of the first was a few years ago. My friend, let’s call him Thomas, believed that communism was a great idea and that America should become communist. I disagreed because I thought that everyone should be paid according to how they contribute to society and should be able to own private property. He disagreed and said that in this way (communism) everyone would be better off and get exactly what they needed. Thomas is a very smart kid and could probably get a high paying job. So I decided to tell him that, if America was a communist country he could end up making the same as someone working the register at a Chick-Fil-A somewhere and he still didn’t see my point. Sure, I saw his point about how communism should work out, but based off of what happens to communist countries usually I don’t really think it is a good idea to become communist. With that argument Thomas moved me. He really did. The problem being, while I did see his point, I still didn’t think that communism was the best path for our country, or really any country at all.

It is important to talk with others with different political beliefs because we can learn or maybe even acquire new ideas on politics. You can learn from others experiences; maybe you can view something differently now that you heard another person’s opinion. Perhaps they convinced you to change your own view, or maybe you disagree. That is okay. Now you can talk about it. If you stay closed-minded about what you believe and only that, however will you learn to improve upon your stance in the political world?

It is important for people with different beliefs to communicate because you may want to learn something new about the beliefs of someone else, and possibly they may change your mind. When you listen to other people's opinions, respectfully, you may have a change of opinion. If you haven't heard someone else's opinion and have never really thought about it, it is almost as if you are brainwashed to one mindset, which is never a good thing. If people never listen to people with different opinions, the same types of people will be in the office all the time since nobody is switching opinions, and for some people, that may not be in their best favor.
Artemis M. (J. R. Masterman, PA)
I would like to participate in an event like “America in One Room”. I think it would be an interesting experience because most of the people I associate with on a daily basis have very similar political opinions as I do, such as my peers, my parents, other family members, and people in my neighborhood. I think that the experiment could be expanded but in groups spread throughout the country, because some people cannot get to a certain place from where they live, some wouldn’t be informed of the experiment if it is halfway across the country from them, and some people wouldn’t want to go to an event like that if it meant traveling long distances to go to something that only lasts the weekend if the timeframe isn’t kept the same.
Iris McLeary (J.R. Masterman)
So in my 6th grade class, we had times where we had conversations like the conference where we’d discuss our standpoint on different issues. I personally found this very helpful because it helped me understand how people who think differently than me, and helped me view issues in a new perspective.
Emi G. (J.R. Masterman)
I think that it’s important for people with different political beliefs to talk to one another because through talking to each other, even though they won’t change their minds, they might change their understanding of the issue. It’s important for people to hear each other out instead of ignoring other opinions and being rude to others who don’t believe in the same things or support different people. I would consider this experiment successful because multiple people said it was a really good experience for them and that they learned new things and heard others talking about their own views on certain political subjects. I would like to be a participate in this experiment because I think it would be a great opportunity to listen to other people's stories and their own experiences instead of just my own.
Ray (J.R. Masterman)
I would very much like to be included in such an event as America in One Room. Although I completely understand that this experiment was meant to follow registered voters, I think it would be interesting to keep parents with a variety of political views in one room and their children in another, letting the kids know that anything discussed or said would be anonymous, and unknown to their parents. This could survey the difference between children and their parents politically. Overall I believe the America in One Room experiment was a smart idea to allow people to broaden their horizons and understand their fellow countrymen’s opinions and beliefs.
Jayden Vance (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another because they can understand people's points of view on topics and you can maybe convince them to change their opinion. By interacting with people who have completely different life experiences than we do we can understand why they believe what they do and we can have more sympathy.
Lily Sussman (J.R. Masterman)
k it is extremely important for everyone to be engaging in conversations similar to those portrayed in the article. After all, the only way to accomplish things is to get a well rounded idea of the subject. We are already being exposed to different opinions on the regular, this is just a more concentrated way. If we don’t have these conversations, how will we change the minds of others or have our minds changed? I don’t think there is another way. The root of humanity is the idea of learning from each other. And, although the conversations may get uncomfortable and heated, that is just a small part of the very important idea of opening up and sharing your beliefs.
Casie-Elle (J.R Masterman)
The first question the article states is difficult for me to solve. It automatically assumes that it is important to discuss our political opinions, but what if it isn’t? Shouldn’t we be having constructive discussions about the planet’s problems? I believe it is more essential to take matters into our own hands as voters than relying on someone who has a 50% chance of not doing the things they “promised” they’d do. We all live on one planet. Perhaps if we spend more time working together on one problem at a time, instead of doing endless debates, we would save the planet sooner than later.
Isa Kennedy (J.R. Masterman)
I think that it is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because it can help people look at things from other points of view. This can help our country to understand other parts of it, uniting us more. I believe that it is very important to connect with our own country, and to learn about the people within it. If we only talked to people that agreed with us, our views would never change, and we would always be in complete opposition to the people that didn’t agree with us. I think that the “America in One Room” experiment was a success, because although not many people changed their minds, they all got a taste of other opinions and understood other points of view.
Mohammad Moraktan (Passaic County Community College)
The biggest problem I think we have with one another is miscommunication, whether it is because of your skin color, religion, gender or cultural beliefs. People from all around the world are likely to have a different thought processes, and that is what makes us unique as individuals. But it is even more important to try to understand where people who have different beliefs are coming from. Having an opinion on a person without knowing their story is like trying to hit an invisible baseball. They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover; this is especially true when the books have different covers.
Alondra DeLaCruz (Passaic County Community College)
It's important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because it helps to see other people's point of views. Hearing others' perspectives also makes us more open-minded and widens our range of thoughts. Instead of seeing others as the enemy for not having the same beliefs as you, one should meet them in the middle and come to terms with why they think so differently.
Izel (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people with different political views to talk to each other because it gives you clarification and understanding of people with different views than yours. It clarifies the ideals of people that you disagree with by opening your mind to more ways of seeing politics. The political world points to always argue with your opponents when you should really try to understand why the support what they are saying. I think we should encourage talking calmly about politics with others as much as we encourage voting.
Christopher Misko (J.R. Masterman)
I really think it is important for people to have civilized talks when talking about politics. A lot of the politics talks happen when people are talking about both the Republicans and the Democrats. When talking about these two sides, there tend to be heated arguments between family, friends, and others. Also when talking about politics, the two sides should listen to one another. Not feud over a couple of opinions. A lot of times, these feuds lead to family stop talking with each other. Nobody would ever want this to happen to them. When talking about the Republicans and Democrats, listen to the opposing side. Don't always think your side is always correct.
Theodore Loshi (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia PA)
I personally believe that it would be a good idea for people of different political viewpoints to discuss and argue about what they believe in or what they agree with. People of different political parties are constantly butting heads over whose ideas are better, but if they were to all discuss in a mannerly way then there could be a positive outcome and maybe some ideas. Opinions could be shared and ideologies could be discussed.
Gabe Axelrod (J.R. Masterman)
I think it would be fun to participate in an event similar to America in one room. I would be able to argue my opinion and listen to others opinions as well as get a new perspective on topics. I think that if you have more people it would be better. This allows more opinions to be heard and this allows more people's opinions to be represented.
Leonardo Gagliardi (J.R. Masterman)
If two people with different political beliefs are talking, it is important that they be respectful of the others’ opinions. That is so they can hear what the other person is saying, and possibly may switch opinions. It would be fun to participate in the “America In One Room” experiment because I’d get to learn about what everyone thinks across the United States. Personally, I wouldn’t argue that much because I don’t know much information on current politics. But I’d like to see other people argue. It is very entertaining to try and figure out what side you’d like to choose, based on two people’s debate.
Weston Tanh (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I believe that “America in One Room” was successful experiment that was worthwhile. One example of this is the fact that some of the people had changed their opinions because of exposure to new ideas. The change in ideas of political views showed that the experience caused some people to absorb new beliefs from other people just like them. I think that learning from people that are similar to you could make it easier to comprehend other things. I think that the new ideas expanded the information in citizens minds which could have a positive impact on society by spreading the things that made the person “change sides” which could help make Americans more positive with their political views.
Mariacristina Calcagno (J.R. Masterman)
You might think that they are crazy, but they probably think that you are crazy. You are sure you are right, but they are sure that they are right. But I think it's your loss if you don't hear them out and find out why they disagree with you, not only in political scenarios. Even if the conversation is simply ongoing rebuttals, you are learning something new, such as peoples’ hardships and ways of living, as demonstrated in “America in One Room”. Think about it like getting smarter about the world you live in. I think this was a successful experiment because it allowed for people to put themselves in others ́ shoes and understand why they think what they do. Many did not leave the room planning to vote differently than before, but maybe after some time reflecting, they started to think differently. If not, I think it was still worthwhile. In the modern world, it is important to take into consideration others’ political viewpoints It allows you to come up with compromises and new ideas. If not, people will simply get angered and frustrated, and it will take a lot longer for change to occur, because opinions will not change. I would love to participate in something like this, not only in political context, because it seems like an eye-opening experience. But I don’t think that one topic should be expanded to millions of people or on social media, because then conversations could get heated quite quickly and it would be harder to monitor the process and results.
Grace Moan (J R Masterman)
I think it is very important for Americans to share their political beliefs. We all could learn a lot from each other. I think “America In One Room” was a very good idea. I’m sure many people that were there learned from others. Although there would be a lot of yelling, If I was older I might’ve wanted to attend because I’m sure I could learn from the other people there and also educate them.
Hope Heinrichs (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
“Who are you voting for?” or, “Are you a Democrat or Republican?”I hear questions like these thrown around so quickly and freely, but I also understand the icy comments that people say to bash one party or another. We are all caught in defending our side of the argument that if we’re not careful, we forget to calm down and listen. Sometimes listening to others who are older and wiser than me will help strengthen my beliefs or weaken them. I also have to consider what the other side looks like as well. To have my opinion, I must be able to see both sides and choose where I belong. If I don’t know what others believe, I’m utterly ignorant of the other half of an argument.
Grace Cubbage (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
I have indeed experienced many conflicts and arguments about political issues. Knowing that my grandparents are on a complete opposite party then me. And it has been extremely stressful. I have never seen such childish behavior from senior citizens. Although that is what they believe, and I still have to respect that, all I hear from them is screaming, bickering, and yelling at young teenagers, like myself. Even though they are the adults who should be more responsible. I can easily say that we play ‘family feud’ a lot at the dinner table. I get so much gross behavior and attitude from them, it's becoming unhealthy.
Ayona Kuriakose (J. R. Masteran)
I would want to participate in an event similar to “America in One Room” then I could hear both sides of an argument. My political views are affected by the people I'm around, so this would help me get a broader understanding of both sides of an issue. For example, healthcare is a big topic for both Democrats and Republicans. Which side you choose is up to you, but hearing why you would choose the side you chose would help people all around you. Also, by doing this, we may be able to stop the violence that politics cause in our world. Lastly, I absolutely believe this type of event could be expanded. As long as you have a place big enough for that many people and you can obtain a controlled environment, I believe that it could be a huge success. I also think that it would be healthy for us teenagers to talk about these types of topics in school instead of avoiding them. We could spend maybe like a half-hour just discussing these types of topics in class.
Mehaad Bahar (J.R. Masterman)
America is divided into two, Republicans and Democrats. Many people when talking about politics don’t let others voice their opinions and beliefs. This is why it’s important for people of different political beliefs to talk to each other to see each other different points of view. This could help more parties to feel as if they aren’t being attacked when discussing a political topic with the other party. Everybody experience different things and those different things help shape who they are and what they believe in. Some parties have good ideas and bad ideas. Hopefully we can one day respect each other beliefs and have a safe place to discuss
Sadie Krumrine (J.R. Masterman)
I think that it is important for people with different view-points to talk to each other so that Americans don’t just dig their heels in and refuse to change their minds. For example if a Democrat and a Republican talk to each other then there is a possibility that one might change their mind on an issue. However if no conversation took place then neither one would look at something differently and say “Hmm. Maybe I’m wrong.” By interacting with people from totally different backgrounds than us we can see an issue from another angle and consider it from someone else’s point of view.
Rena Liu (J.R. Masterman)
It’s definitely important for people to talk to one another because everyone’s political views are different, and everyone experiences different things than you. These experiences shape their political beliefs. To add on, listening to other people can change your opinion, or at least it can educate you more on different people’s difficulties. If everyone just had their own view, then America would split and no one would listen to each other. but if we talked to each other, we could together resolve problems. This could be better for everyone, because together, we are all stronger.
Elina Chen (J.R Masterman)
I believe it is important for people with different political views to converse with one another. As people tend to argue for their political beliefs, it would be beneficial if they learned to stay courteous keep an open mind. You could learn something that you didn’t know before, and this could change your point of view accordingly. Everyone has their own opinions, and if we talk to each other about those opinions, it could benefit all of us. If we only talked to people who share our way of thinking, this could result in a lot of unnecessary arguments that would easily be solved by communication.
Kaitlyn G. (J.R. Masterman)
The danger of Americans not listening to the other side of the story will lead to bad consequences. In today’s politics, not a lot is noncontestable. Though some people act as if it is. They think that there is only one right answer. Really it all comes down to perspective, your past, and what you hope for the future. Everyone has a different past and future, therefore, it is inevitable for there to be someone to challenge what you say. If you choose not to listen because you believe that only what you think is right then you might just be missing some crucial information that contributes to the case or story. For instance, the chicken and the egg question. It all comes down to what you think came first and of course, there will be someone who disagrees. They can give you a whole different perspective. If you think the chicken came first, they might say “Well, didn’t that chicken have to come from an egg?”. If you think that the egg came first, they might say, “Well, what had the egg?”. There is almost always another way to look at things.
Isadora Monteith (J.R. Masterman)
I believe that it is important to talk to others that have different beliefs but only to an extent. Having two or more people in a room at the same time, with different beliefs, could be both beneficial, and problematic. It could be beneficial because when new ideas are brought to you, you could benefit by learning them and maybe even change your view. On the other hand, it could be problematic because a heated argument could arise, resolving in rude comments and hurting each other. I do think some conversations about politics and beliefs should occur, and if they don't, I don't think that anyone would ever fully understand their own beliefs, and only go by other people's beliefs around them.
Ryan Zou (J. R. Masterman)
It's critical for voters with differing political beliefs to communicate with each other. Citizens can discover distinctly different political views by interacting with others. They can learn why others support various opinions, and their judgments wouldn't be so biased. There might be a danger when Americans suddenly engage in political debates, and those could turn into heated arguments. If the citizens only speak to those who bear similar viewpoints, they will become extremely subjective. I have never spoken to anyone that majorly influenced my current position. I believe that "America In One Room" was a mix of success and inconclusiveness. The voters all heard different voices and life experiences, but most of them still went along with their previous premises. The attendees' future conversations involving politics might not change that much, but they still have the experience they gained from America In One Room. It could potentially change thousands of people. I would love to attend America In One Room because it will expand my arsenal of political knowledge. The exhibition would be great on a large scale, of thousands and possibly millions by having many locations. It would be beneficial for the American voting population.
Roman Shaaban (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people to talk about political beliefs because people should express how they feel about certain subjects and topics. For example, one topic that was mentioned in the article a few times was healthcare. Many people had different beliefs in this and they simply expressed how they felt. Through communicating your beliefs, you can learn how people feel about certain topics and subjects therefore leading to people changing their mind or understanding a different viewpoint on the subject. People can also learn off of life experiences from other people such as the healthcare argument stated in the article. I think that this experiment was very beneficial in the sense that it helped people have a better perspective on people's opinions on politics. I think this type of event should happen often to better people’s understanding on how others think about certain topics.
Drake (J. R. Masterman)
It is essential for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another so they can learn to speak and listen respectfully and understand other’s views on subjects. It might even change your ideals and opinions. Learning to talk civilly will benefit everyone as we can solve issues faster. People can gain new perspectives by talking with others. If they only talk with people who agree with them, people won’t be able to see the full picture, just a part of it. This will cause problems in the world as people who talk with others with different views won’t be able to speak without arguing and yelling.
Katelyn C (J.R Masterman)
I think that it’s important for people with different political beliefs to all talk to each other because I feel like if everyone is able to have a civil and safe conversation about their beliefs it might help people see the reason why others believe in something else. Also, People won't judge anyone as much because they would understand why they believe in this certain political situation.
Kira Douglas (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another because that can make you more open to accepting why or why not somebody has different beliefs than you. You can understand how and why certain people feel a specific way about certain political people and situations. We can learn by interacting with people who have completely different life experiences than we do also. By interacting with these people we understand how certain topics affect people more than they would affect you, so maybe that's why you feel a certain way about the topic, or don't care for it at all. This isn't to necessarily change your beliefs but it is to help you understand why certain people feel differently about things than you.
Maya Dixon (J.R. Masterman)
Back in the day white people would just talk with white. Black people would just talk with black. Latino would just talk with latino. What I think is important is that we humans acknowledge is that if you look back about a hundred years ago. Maybe even fifty years ago, people of different races and colors wouldn’t even look at each other. Now people of different races and colors work together in a community and talk about deep things. I do think it is important for people of different colors to talk together because you can learn so much more about their culture and beliefs that you may never have known about. For example if you were doing a project on different cultures and people. You wouldn’t have to order and read a five-hundred page book and take notes. You could just ask someone in person. I mean if you think about it, humans are like a primary source. They know information from their own experiences and their life. If you think about it, the information your getting from a human of different color is probably more accurate than a book. You can go such a long way by just talking or interacting with someone different than you that you would have never talked to a hundred years ago.
Kobe Y. (J.R. Masterman)
I think that it's very important to have people speak out on their political opinion. Because some people could be right about some things which could change some peoples view for the better. I do think that America in a Room is a good operation, to get peoples viewpoints on different things. I think that this was a good change to get more open minded people, and open up minds.
Ezra Beidler-Shenk (J.R. Masterman)
Ezra Beidler-Shenk J.R. Masterman I would absolutely love to participate in an event like this just because of the vastly different opinions and insights on the exact same issue. I don’t think that anybody else would be able to change my mind about what I believe but I think that it would be an amazing experience and I might understand a little better why they believe a certain thing. Lastly, I absolutely think that this model could be expanded. Maybe just a small amount of time each week in school where we are allowed to get together with other kids in school and just debate about topics that are currently big in our country now.
victoria a (j.r. masterman)
Bringing people with different political beliefs to listen to each other is a really difficult task, most of the time people do not want to listen to other people's voices. I believe it is important to talk with people with different political beliefs because people show different points of view because they have different experiences in their life. The only way we can understand them is by talking with them. First, people argue and have conflicts but then, after that, we can also start to see issues from their point of view. This experience helps to gain new perceptions to see the issue. I think the '' America in One Room '' experiment gained its successful intention that people don't change their beliefs but they change their understanding. If people with different political beliefs do not listen to each other, we just end up with polar opposite sides of the political spectrum arguing for the exact opposite things. Without compromise, there is no change.
Nathaniel Waters (Julia R. Masterman)
I believe it is important to discuss about political opinions because you never know when you could change your mind. When you talk to other people you get some of their knowledge and learn something new and maybe can switch your opinion can make that person switch their opinion. People don't always need to be bias about things so I think people should ask about what they feel about the current news there is around the world. If people don't discuss their social topics then you will never know people's struggles are about the opinion. So that way if people can have an open view of people's opinion and which can make you non-selfish, that way you think about others and not yourself all like that.
Michael Huang (JR Masterman)
I believe it is important for people to communicate with others about politics. In a country where it’s almost impossible not to hear about what’s happening, we need to know how others feel about the news. It’s amazing seeing how the same thing happening in the news can be considered amazing to some people and absolutely terrible to others. This experiment shows us how people discuss politics when there is such a large amount of variety.
Sarah (J.R. Masterman in Philadelphia, PA)
This article is remarkably inspiring. It shows how you can take hundreds of people, all with much varying political opinions, and it is possible for them to be civil towards each other. This is something you don't see often in today's political arguments- usually, it's just "I'm right, and I'm not changing my mind." But the fact that people were more open makes this uplifting. Although most people noted that they didn't change their political views much, they did say that they had a more open view of what others thought. I think that this article really shows how it's important to sit down and talk -not argue- about your opinions from time to time.
Braedon Comet (HHHS)
It is very important to talk about different political beliefs. One of the reasons is that what it does is open everyone to the other person's beliefs so if they are maybe feeling pressured to feel a certain way before. Also if they have not known what your view it might make it where you can see what the view is like. Another reason is you should be able to have a debate about this kind of thing with one of your friends if you want
Mariacristina Calcagno (J.R. Masterman)
You might think that they are crazy, but they probably think that you are crazy. You are sure you are right, but they are sure that they are right. I believe that it is important to share your political beliefs because if you don't tell someone something, how are they going to know the other side of the story? How are they going to know what you believe in? Even if you get into many arguments, it is still worth it to let your voice be heard. I feel as if some people don't want their voice to be heard because they don't want to be judged. What is the worst that can happen if you share your political views? Nobody is going to hurt you if you share who you like and who you may want to vote for. That is my point of view on the situation.
Nick Comet (HHHS)
It’s important because you can hear what the other side has to say. Maybe by doing that they can make a compromise and meet in the middle of something. Also it informs each side on h0w the opposing side is working to achieve and vise versa.
Nick Doleschel (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia)
The danger of American people only talking to people of the same political viewpoint is great. This would be the same as only hearing what we want to hear. We will not broaden our horizons and increase our general horizons. In other words, we will remain ignorant. We will also increase the divide between humans, increasing the isolation between the two parties. This will liken to something similar right before the civil war, when the North and South were at such a standoff that neither could talk to the other. If this were to happen, this could weaken the economy to a point that would be impossible to come back from.
Sahil Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Part 2- In fact, this experiment was so effective that I believe that it should be performed between actual politicians, because it may help relieve tension between the two parties in the government. If government parties understood why the other party held certain beliefs, perhaps it would be easier to pass certain policies. Even though it may not seem like speaking to a person with a completely different belief would alleviate tension, it is the best and often the only solution to come to an agreement. The ability to talk to and understand the feelings of another person is one of the best qualities a human, and especially a politician, can have as it not only shows that the person has plenty of empathy, but it allows that person to mediate conflicts. If humans didn’t have the ability to understand the feelings of another person through discussion, empathy wouldn’t exist. Empathy is the valuable characteristic that allows conflict to be reduced. Since this experience clearly demonstrates that listening to people who may have different opinions than us with an open mind can help us understand the issue from their point of view, it provides the message that understanding the viewpoint of other people can reduce conflict. If people all over the world hold civil discussions like the “America in One Room” experiment and accept each other’s opinions, conflict would be significantly reduced and our planet would transform into a much more peaceful place to live.
cayla comet (hanover)
Everyone has different opinions and beliefs and we should always respect everyone's different opinions. I think it's important for people with different views to talk to each other because this might show others that they could be wrong. Someone could teach someone something they didn’t know and believe. I wouldn’t care to sit down and talk to someone about the issues of the U.S because i'm not big into politics and I don't really care. But when the day comes that I can vote I will want to learn more about politics, but at my age it doesn't really matter to me.
Sydney Pugh (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I believe very strongly in the importance of people with different political beleifs talking to one another about their opinions, and explaining what's caused them to feel that way. The reason this is, is because it is extremely difficult to see how a persons walks of life and position within the world impacts how they see certain topics. This explains why groups of people growing up and living in similar environments and conditions tend to have the same political views as one another. It's not that this whole group is right or wrong, the matter is their circumstances and personal experiences have caused them to acquire that certain belief. It'd be extremely difficult for a boy who grew up in a small southern town with barely any people of color to see eye to eye with a Native New Yorker who see's a different culture every block she turns. Their lives, upbringing, and education are so different that they can never truly understand what the other person has gone through unless they've lived it. The closest we're going to get to sharing our life experience is to tell each other, and talk it out. These stories can often times be the root in what we have to say, and why we feel we have to say it.
Demetrius H. (Julia R. Masterman)
I couldn’t characterize “America in One Room” as a success, but I would say it was probably a rather good experience for those involved. The ones involved likely have become a bit more open-minded about what they think politically. Although I personally would not like to participate in these events, others might. And I support that decision.
Vivina Dong (J. R. Masterman)
I believe that it is very important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another. People having different opinions could cause an argument, but if you keep an open mind and accept others' opinions, the conversation could go very well. People all have different opinions and different ways of dealing with political issues, and when we talk to each other, we can give each other ideas and help others be open-minded about political views. If people all interact with another with the same view, there wouldn't be much of a conversation going on. I'd say that “America in One Room” was a success since the purpose of it wasn't to get the people who have a different opinion or view than yours to actually change their minds and side with you on your opinions. I think that the purpose of “America in One Room” was just to have people share their opinions on political topics, without really needing to argue and convince them. America is a diverse country. Different opinions are what creates diversity. Without different opinions, the country would just be plain, or bland. I don't know what would happen if I participated in “America in One Room” as I have never really been in a similar conversation (my family don't talk about politics that much) but if I were, I would be sure that I would have a totally different view of what is going on in this country. So I do believe that it is very important to have people with different political views to talk with one another.
Sydney Comet (HHs)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because they need to try and understand how the other person views politics. I think if people didn’t talk they would just be very adamant about their views and just disregard the other sides views. There would be a big divide between the views because each one of them thinks that their right. I think if we learn about the others' views then more peoples eyes would open and not just label their views as wrong.

If people with different political beliefs to talk with one another, I guess they can learn accepting people who has another idea. So it is very important. If they don't talk with people who has another idea, they can't know other good ideas even if they have a good idea.
Joe Comet (HHHS)
They need to talk to each other to see what others have to say. So if they have an idea then the two parties need to discuss them and figure out if there thought is good. If the democrats have a good idea then they should be able to express themselves and talk about what needs to be fixed.
Priya Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Talking to people that have different views and that all have a different background helps people become more open-minded. It helps a person become more tolerant to different views and become more understanding of situations and why a certain person might think that way. By talking and interacting with people of diverse backgrounds we can maybe learn something from them. The different situations that they go through influence a person's views on certain topics. Last year, my surroundings and peers have certainly influenced and changed certain political views. Since then, I am able to accept and respect different people's views. Certainly talking to different people with different political views helps you grow as a person.
Zhaire Easley (J.R Masterman School, PA)
I believe everyone should share and talk about their different political perspectives so they can understand each other's point of view on the political party they belong to. With communication, I feel like everyone can share and gather ideas so we can all have the same understanding as others and not argue about them because that does nothing but start commotion. People have mindsets that are either fixed or growth mindsets. And with this people can either listen to others and change or stay the way they are and not listen to anyone else. The communication can change everyone's mindset, which means they have a growth mindset towards positive actions. Having a growth mindset and communicating with others is a good way to settle agreements with each other.
Rebecca Comet (HHHS)
I think it is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because people need to try and understand the other person’s views. It may cause a fight between them but people still need to try and understand the other person’s views. I think this because it doesn’t matter what political views the other person has and people don’t normally understand the other side of political views that aren’t their kind of views.
Seth Comet (HHHS)
I think that people of different political views should talk more about why they choose with people with conflicting beliefs because they could say something that changes your perspective on the political. You can see the other person's view when in a debate and I think that that is why the debates are so popular because you can see the other person's beliefs and what they think should happen.
Corbin Comet (HHHS)
t's important for people to talk about different beliefs because it introduces both views from each side. By talking about each political belief it allows people to see the pros and cons of each side and could inspire others to make a solution to the political conflict. If people didn't speak on their part there would be no solution meaning there would be no improvement. I have experienced a political conversation and it simply about should guns be banned and I said no and told them why and after that they all looked at it from how I viewed the topic and are no longer against owning a firearm.
Shahrin Kader (J.R. Masterman)
It’s important for people with different political beliefs to talk with each other because then people could learn about what it is like for people on the other side of the spectrum, and what their reasons are. We can learn about why people don’t like certain people in politics, or in any general topic overall. People may learn about entirely different experiences, and have a different viewpoint from then on, causing them to be with other people on a different side of the spectrum. If Americans only listen to the side that they are on, I believe America may be in danger of having no one left in the middle of the two parties, and having people who vote for the same party for years and years. I feel that the people who attended and argued were affected by this event, because they learned, and actually experienced a political “debate” outside of a screen filled with leaders of parties. If all of America got to participate, maybe they would change their minds and be open-minded to other experiences, and cause politics to be more of a thing that people talk about, then a thing people always agree and hear about. With people always against each other, but only talking to their fellow supporters, it really won’t be politics anymore. It would just be a fight that’s never really fought.
Sahil Patel (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
The experiment “America in One Room” was an excellent demonstration of the necessity for people of different beliefs to hold conversation with each other. This experiment does not only have to apply to politics but can apply to any issue. As demonstrated by the experiment, interacting with people who have different opinions can help us understand their viewpoint on the issue. Seeing the issue from another person’s shoes is essential in reducing conflict because it would enable people to become more sympathetic. Additionally, interacting with people who have had completely different experiences from us will help us grow because we will be able to learn lessons from them. Not only would we be able to understand their point of view, but we would be able to gain knowledge about experiences that we may have never encountered before.
dylan palantino (jr masterman)
I would like to participate in an event like this. I would enjoy this because I would meet new people and respectfully speak my mind. Also, it would be cool to walk into a room and speak about the main topics in the media right now with many people from all around the united states. This sort of thing would be good to enter with an open mind. Most people who are into politics are strongly on one side of a topic either you strongly agree or strongly disagree. So if they are in one room that can get heated and that would be fun to watch. so those are some of the reasons why I would love to do this.
Bennett M (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I believe that it is important for people to share their political views, especially with the opposing party, as it can help them to see their viewpoints. The gathering of the five-hundred and twenty-six people to talk about their beliefs is something that is not common in today’s society. I believe that this is something that should be done more often, as it keeps people better informed about our government. These conversations won’t necessarily change the side that they are on, but it may give them to think about it. The writer provides evidence to the reader by describing the story of Bonnie Sumner whos understanding of Affordable Healthcare was changed by the story of a woman who was negatively affected by it. The continuous communication between opposing parties is how the major issues facing our country are going to be solved.
Brycinea Stratton (J.R. Masterman)
It's important for people with different political beliefs to talk with each other so they can see why people think the things that they think. For example, in the article These 526 Voters Represent All of America. And They Spent a Weekend Together many people talk about how their point of view never changed, but the way they thought about the other side of the argument changed after they listened to the other side of the argument from other people. We can learn how other people see everything, and then understand why everyone doesn’t agree instead of getting mad at people for thinking about it in the “wrong way.” I think I would like to participate in an activity like "America in One Room" because i think it would be interesting to see everybody's ideas in politics, and the reasoning behind their ideas. I’m not sure if they would be able to expand the project to more people (probably at least 1000), but if they could, they would be great, because it makes everybody more open to ideas which means that some of the people who would have chosen a decision that could destroy our country, we could continue to safely live in the U.S.A., and politics wouldn't be as dangerous a topic.
Kaden Comet (HHHS)
Political differences in America need to be talked about. A majority of people vote for their own part just because it’s the party they think they like without educating themselves. Most if not all people do not agree with their party for every single issue. Talking with others can change your outlook and approach towards how you view politics.
Finnian L (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
I am starting off this comment by stating that I am someone who when faced by someone holding opposite views as me, get's very passionate. I can have constructive debate upon *like* minded peers, but the second I have to debate the literal ethno-nationalist in debate club, I go off. Debate in it's purest form isn't changing people's minds, it's changing your own mind. Through debate with other left leaning people, I've altered and strengthened my own beliefs. I can not say though that a conservative has every changed my mind towards their views, if anything I've moved further left due to seeing how bad the right is. And although I value compromise, when a system is fundamentally broken, there isn't room for middle ground. There are many issues where middle ground is good, but equally as many where middle ground is not an option. For example, there's no room for compromise in saving the planet vs letting the lobbyists to continue profiting. We either do what needs to be done, or nothing of substance gets done.
skylar comet (HHHS)
I think that people with different political views shouldnt only surround themselves with their ideas and beliefs. It is good for people to be more diverse and open to other people's ideas. Even if someone does not agree with another person it is good for them to hear and understand where they are coming from. If people didn't do this it could result in a lot more fights and violence from people who can't admit they are wrong or that the other person might have a point.
Owen Cheung (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other because Then your political view could be changed and you could understand how the opposing group thinks. There could be a civil war breaking out over politics if they don't understand each other. When they only listen to people who share the same view point then they would never learn about anything else other than what the political viewpoint they are supporting sees
Paul Sobol "Car Guru" (J.R Masterman)
I think that it is important for people to talk to each other with different political beliefs. People should know other peoples opinions about some political cases. It is better to argue and try to prove your points than just agreeing on the same things always. If people like to talk about politics and they are always around people with the same political party, why don’t they go to places where there are heated, non violent arguments of people disagreeing about politics. Politics won’t really be interesting to talk about if you are with the same people. It’s more fun to debate with people with different political views.
Kaddy Ren (J.R Masterman, PA)
If Americans don’t interact with people who have different political beliefs than them, then our country could become very separated and it could lead to the start of a war. It sounds outrageous when you first think about, but it really isn’t so far fetched. When people say they want to have civil discussions with others around politics, it is almost never the end result. You end with people screaming and shouting at one another. And over what? Gender rights? Taxation? Health care? It’s beginning to separate families and creating unhealthy stereotypes about where people are from. Communication is important for the people of any country, and after this experiment was conducted people who participated reported to sway more towards the center. Interacting in such a way and becoming more open minded to other ideas apart from your own is vital in a society. In today's world we are becoming more and more isolated with most of our political agenda coming from news outlets and not real voices. I think the difference between arguing politically and personally makes a huge difference and this experiment was able to showcase that. I believe "America in One Room " was a success.
Brianna K. (J.R Masterman)
I feel that it is important to have people from all different political sides to come together and talk to each other without fighting. I understand that people have different beliefs but I think it’s childish that grown adults can’t voice their opinion without somebody verbally attacking them. It’s nice that they got a chance to talk calmly without it turning into a huge fight. Even if it didn’t change their mind the got to understand other peoples’ views. This might have given people a chance to talk when they wouldn’t have otherwise because they were scared. It finally gave people a chance to see eye to eye. I think that it was a very good idea and that they should do it again in the future.
Hager Alsekaf (Julia R. Masterman Highschool)
In my opinion, it is very important for people with different political views to talk to each other and to negotiate and just hear other sides of political stories. Some people like avoiding the topic because of various reasons which can include being afraid. Other people just don’t like talking about politics and they don’t like arguing or hearing other’s views on certain political topics. It’s hard to argue with people who disagree with you because so many people are closed-minded and don’t want to try and understand or consider what you're trying to say. I think that is why many people don’t like talking about politics. Another reason can also be because these kind of topics can easily cause violence. It’s easier to talk with someone who is open-minded and someone who is willing to listen.
Jack Huo (Hoggard High School WIlmington, NC)
Communication is a vital part of human life, and it has been observed time and time again how the lack of good communication results in misunderstandings, conflicts, and could even escalate to severe situations which could have otherwise been avoided. Every romance comedy that ever existed is based on miscommunication, along with many other shows or stories. It is easy to use, and makes for lots of dramatic irony. However, life shouldn’t be imitating TV shows; People need to be talking to each other, regardless of their political opinions, their preferences, their level of education, their favorite Kardashian, their race, whatever. A lot of problems and negative feelings between different people can be solved by communication. This includes political differences. Different political opinions should be welcomed. Only when there is proper communication and diversity of opinions can we know how to move forward. I would enjoy sitting down with people from all corners of the political spectrum to discuss issues, so long as everyone is well mannered and respectful. No one has to agree, but everyone should respect one anothers’ opinion. After all, isn’t that what democracy is supposed to be?
Charlie Knoblock (J.R Masterman)
I think that people with different political views should talk to each other in a calm fashion. When voices are raised, no one is gaining anything from the conversation. It just becomes who can scream their points louder. When people can just agree to disagree, then the conversation can take a good turn. I think that “America in One Room” was a success, because while not a lot of people changed their opinions, it let them look at the other side and see what the people they were supposed to hate are talking about. It helps to see the big picture.
Zach Comet (HHHS)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to each other so they can share opinions. People who favor one party over another do not look at another person’s point of view. The just assume what they hear from right-wing or left-wing news organizations (Fox News, MSNBC) is true and unbiased. People argue over politics all the time since one person believes one thing and the other person believes the other.
Matt Dougherty (J. R. Masterman)
I think it is important that people with different political beliefs to talk with one another because people need to see things from the other person’s point of view. If you never see things the way other people see things you become narcissistic and closed minded. When we interact with people who have completely different life experiences than we do, we learn to listen to their ideas and respect them.
Jason Zhang (Masterman)
I believe that people who are from different backgrounds and have different political views should definitely interact with each other. When dealing with politics or really anything with opinion, sometimes I find it helpful to open your mind, and try to make an argument for the side opposite of your own. This helps you see things from all angles. Oftentimes, you can now make a much better rebuttal, since you know what the other side will be saying & know why they chose that view. In this way, seeing things from other’s perspective can actually strengthen your own argument.
Lucas Comet (HHHS)
I believe it's very important that people have different political opinions, I just hate it when you get yelled at, bullied, and disrespected for sharing your opinion. Everyone has a right to have one, and it can be different from your point of view. However, if put in a room of people from every political spectrum, I’d like to believe I could get along. But if someone is too close minded, then I definitely won't get along with them.
Christina (Julia R. Masterman)

I believe that everyone should talk about their political views because if people with different views can talk about politics without the conversation going downhill, people could help others be more open minded to one another. Like the article said, people’s views can be influenced by where they came from, and listening to others speak about how something government related is affecting their culture can help the citizens of any country to be more open minded to others and their views. Being open minded can help the entire country work as one and help push their country forward all from one discussion.
Jasper (J.R. Masterman)
I think there are many dangers in people not talking to others with conflicting political beliefs, and instead talking to people with similar beliefs. I think this act can and will contribute to the political close mindedness of citizens throughout America. I think this because if people continue to talk with others that share political views, their ideas and theories will be continuously supported and thus preventing them to hear a different perspective on issues that matter. I think this is what leads to people not voting, due to the fact that they were so committed to a certain candidate that no other candidates are even worth voting for.
EmilyComet (HHHS)
@Jasper Agreed!
Vivian (J.R. Masterman)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk to one another to gain a greater understanding of people’s lives and how it shapes their points of view. If people only interact with people with the same political views, nothing will get anywhere and nobody learns anything. I would say “America in One Room” was a success, many of the participants learned about people’s situations and how the person they voted for effects it. Because of this, everyone became more open-minded. Some even changed their minds and which side they were on. I don’t think I would like to be a part of it though, it just doesn’t really seem like my thing.
Lily Dorfman (J.R. Masterman)
If Americans don’t interact with people who have different political beliefs, the diversity of politics in America will be lost. If you don’t talk to people with different ideas and opinions, you will only benefit certain people. It is America’s government’s job to help everyone and to not favor certain people over others. If you only talk to people with the same viewpoints, you won’t get any new ideas either. Overall, talking to people with different beliefs than yours will benefit everyone. If Americans don’t interact with people who have different political beliefs, the diversity of politics in America will be lost. Philip Brown, Block 2 (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
@Lily Dorfman I believe that diversity in American politics is already largely lost, and we're presented with these one side is good the other is evil and it's very toxic and overstimulating for us. this needs to change dividing America does not benefit the common people, it benefits the politicians and yes the best way for this system to change is for people with different beliefs to come together, and respect other's ideas and have empathy for the other side.
Mia S (Chicago)
I think discussing politics is imperative to understanding and accepting one another. I would consider myself a moderate leaning liberal, while my dad is a staunch conservative. I used to think my dad was not empathetic to the less fortunate, but after a two-hour-long discussion, I came to understand his beliefs. After my conversation with my dad, I have been more inclined to hear the opinions of people I wouldn't normally want to listen to. I did not change my political views, but I was able to understand the reasoning behind his conservative beliefs. Civility when talking about politics is a must. By sharing our stories and world views, we become more inclined to understand and listen.
Sloane Ward (Northbrook, IL)
It is important for people with different political views to talk with one another because this way people can understand why each individual feels the way they do. Also, some people think that they belong to one political party because their friends or parents are and by having a discussion with others, someone may learn that what they once thought may not be at all what they truly believe in. If Americans don't step out of their comfort zones and talk to people with different views than them then there will always be a major divide. By having these conversations we lessen the divide between political parties and also set the record straight on some of the falsehoods that people believe. I would characterize "America in One Room" as a success because the goal was to just have people with different views come together and talk which is exactly what these people did. The goal of the experiment was not to change their mindsets but to be more aware of the experiences other people have that make them believe what they do. I do believe that after this event, those who attended will now have different conversations with people when talking about politics. It will be less of a debate and more of a discussion about views. I would like to participate in an event like this one because it is all about opening people's minds and discussing important topics that affect every person in America, all ages, relating to the present and the future.
Maria (Northbrook, IL)
If Americans never talk about their beliefs, then no one will ever try to fix problems in our society. Everything would stay exactly as it is. Everybody will just stay in Bobbie Harro's "Cycle of Socialization" following only what they know, and never leaving the cycle. Nobody would ever give their opinions or agree. The country would be a mess. Every single American is different in one way or another: their backgrounds, beliefs, cultures, etc. Some people on the far right and far left have never heard the others' arguments and therefore, stuck believing only what they know. Kids would listen to their families' opinions on specific topics and not challenge them. They wouldn't know what to disagree with. People's minds would never be changed nor would they have a wider understanding of what others believe around them. When people talk about their opinions, about topics they are passionate in, people can be swayed for the better, towards a more middle ground between the two extremes. Most people have never heard the counterargument to their argument and therefore don't know if what they believe in is what they believe in or just what they know from the society that they live in.
Sam S (Northbrook, IL)
I would love to be a part of an experience like America in One Room. Although I live in an area where there is some diversity in political thought, people are more or less similar in how they view the world. It would be very interesting to be in an environment meant for political discussion with people from completely different backgrounds because the policies that I might oppose could have a human argument for them. That's why open discourse is important: it's very difficult to stay open-minded and strive for bipartisan progress when no one understands the experiences behind why the other side thinks the way they do. There is no right answer to how we deal with issues like trade. Certain answers might work for some, but not for others. Until the people make an effort to understand the values and needs of each other, our politics will continue to be a political game that leaves millions of people unheard. So America in One Room was definitely a success; I'm sure the people there gained insight into different viewpoints (regardless of if they changed their minds or not) and the specific conversations that were detailed in the article certainly helped the readers see how political diversity stems from vastly different life experiences among Americans.
Frank (Chicago, IL)
In the essay, "Willing to be Disturbed" by Margaret Wheatley, she outlines the importance of being curious about what others have to say and be "willing to let go of our certainty and expect ourselves to be confused for a time." I believe it is important for others to share their personal experiences rather than their opinions in order to reveal a complexity of their own lives that others may not be exposed to. Margaret concludes her essay with the simple phrase, "There is no need for us to be joined at the head. We are joined by our human hearts." We all might think different things, but we are all part of one society, one world, one heart.
Zander (J)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another because we can obtain a viewpoint of someone with different life experiences which allows more understanding and less assumptions and biases. A lot of the time in political discussions, people tend to ignore what the opposing view says while they try to formulate a counterargument for their own point. This results in no change in view because it becomes an argument, not a discussion. However, if people were to actively listen to one another's views, then there will be less assumptions and misconceptions as to what the other side believes and people will understand and respect each other in a civil manner. In Bobbie Harro's Cycle of Liberation, she declares, "It becomes necessary for us to seek experiences outside ourselves in order to check our reality and to expose ourselves to a wider range of differences than we had before" (621). Therefore, she discusses the same idea in that humanity needs to get rid of our assumptions and biases of one another through getting to know similar and opposing opinions.
Amanda P. (Northbrook, IL)
Everyone grows up differently. Everyone also has different life experiences. There is no way we are all the same. Even though sometimes it is hard to agree, it is always important to listen to others' views. In politics, it is especially important to listen to others. Without listening to the views of those around us, we will never learn more. We will keep holding on to our closed off, unrealistic hopes and dreams for the country, without thinking of all perspectives. Listening to others may even be surprising or even eye opening. It is so easy to tune out all the discussion and let it all become white noise. In the United States, it is essential that we discuss politics and constantly reconsider all the ways we may be able to learn from our peers. Just listening to someone one time may open up our eyes and allow us to make better, more informed political decisions.
Tim SJ (Northbrook, IL)
In our high school english class, we're reading an article by Margaret J. Wheatley titled "Willing to be Disturbed." One line from that article sums up the purpose of the conference perfectly: "We don't have time or interest to sit and listen to those who think differently than we do." As many of the people who attended the conference attested, minds may not have been changed but they understood perspectives that they didn't before through stories of others. By understanding the views of others, our ideas of how to combat certain issues may shift slightly. Politics, which to many can be a very hostile subject, become much less divided when the views of opponents are heard.
J0N (Northbrook)
By sharing each others political views it allows the animosity of the politics to go away. Although no one is having their beliefs changed, they are starting to see a different perspective. It makes them not hate the other side, but rather just disagree with them, which are two very different things.
Sammi K (Northbrook IL)
It is important to talk with people who have different beliefs so that you can understand where others are coming from before judging them. You should understand why people feel the way they do before jumping to conclusions. If Americans were to only talk with those who share their viewpoints, they would be one-sided their entire life. They would continue to make assumptions about people because they did not make the effort to learn about the other group. There would continue to be a divide within the nation, and if it continued the separation would only continue to grow, causing people to have very little respect for one another.
Carl (Chicago, Illinois)
When people are able to discuss ideas face to face, they are reminded that the person they are speaking to is an actual human being. It is easy to complain about a group or situation when you don't have to look a person in the eye and explain your reasoning. Through civil debate, people are forced to discuss the issues at hand and not just talk about who is wrong and right. As people dig further into conversation, they may discover that some of their arguments are flawed and will also see the other person's perspective. It's important to learn how to develop ideologies through experiences and facts, not emotion.
Lizzie (United States)
Citizens must learn to embrace the differences that flourish in our society, especially as America takes pride in its diversity. People must learn about others backgrounds in order to understand one another and the lessen the judgement that exists.
Noah (Northbrook, Il)
Obviously, it is important to talk with people of differing views than your own, and this article does an extremely good job of illustrating this. Even if you don't change your mind on an issue, at least you heard the other side and aren't just arguing the point because "they're wrong". The basic fact is that talking with others allows for changes in perspective, and without this, one becomes stuck in their ways and ideas, and will never be able to change. Even if you completely disagree with someone else's views, talking with them and respectfully disagreeing with them can strengthen your own beliefs and reaffirm your ideas and opinions.
Jamie (Northbrook, Il)
It is extremely important that people with different political viewpoints discuss their opinions so that people can better understand one another. In politics, it is easy to hate others because of their opinions, however, everyone leads different lives, meaning that their ideas reflect their own personal experiences. By refusing to acknowledge others' ideas, people's experiences are invalidated and pushed away. The point of a discussion is not to necessarily change people's minds but to rather humanize opponents. Therefore, the "America in One Room" was a success because it opened many people's eyes to what other's believe and how their experiences impacted them.
Ethan S (Northrook IL)
Talking with those who differ in views is important, because although it may not change one's political views, it allows for personal empathizing. In the American political environment, people exist in polar, highly partisan sides of the table. Listening to the other side offers new perspectives and can hopefully eliminate some of the political hatred each side has for each other.
Matt (United States)
It makes sense, mainly people are so angry and bitter towards each other because they simply have no understanding of where the other comes from. Sharing perspectives becomes key not in hopes of shifting someones political opinion, but simply creating a greater sense of understanding around any issue.
Micah (Northbrook)
Developing empathy for the diversity of political views in our country has never been harder as our platforms for discourse grow increasingly depersonalized. An example of this is social media. Social media's infrastructure doesn't foster constructive dialogue. It allows for sound bites and misinformed reactions, yet fails to enable users to continue the conversation by discussing their opinions. Posts become monologues that choke out the idea of an opposing view. Seas of comments of approval and likes drown the potential for any legitimate conversation.
Tori Okorodudu (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Political Views I think it’s important for people from different areas of the United states to discuss politics with other people who have different views. Lot’s of people’s political views depend on their cultural background and the society they grew up in. If different people can explain why or why not they agree with a certain topic, it may convince others to be more open minded. Political disputes can often become heated and divide groups even further, but if we get into the habit of discussing our political views to different people, we may have a more open mindset or change our minds about certain things. If we can discuss political topics with different people, it may unite us as a country and help us with domestic affairs.
Manav Jha (J.R. Masterman)
I think that it is very important for people to share their political views with others because if they do, they could change someone’s whole political view. Someone could give a good solid reason by a political person is corrupt, and that could show you that maybe you were wrong about that person or that party. Even if someone disagrees with you, they could still make you understand that some of the things that that person did weren’t the best.
John Ritsko (J. R. Masterman School, PA)
I think that people with different political beliefs should talk together. If we talk together, then maybe we will find a way to resolve political disputes in ways both sides will agree on. If we can resolve internal debates then we will be able to focus and work together to solve problems like foreign relations and climate change. This could be better, not only for us, but for other countries that we are allies with.
Grace Robertson (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
I think it is absolutely vital to speak (even argue) civilly with people of different beliefs. I’m conservative and I run cross country with a friend who is very liberal. She is quite possibly my favorite person to talk to about current issues. Neither one of us ever gets heated and it’s never awkward; it’s merely interest in perspectives from the other side of the spectrum. These talks don’t divide us but unite us. I would even argue that these talks help our friendship develop since we patiently and compassionately learn about one another’s lives and beliefs. From my conversations with Mollie, I can hear personal stories and reasoning for beliefs that are contrary to my own; I hope she experiences this, too. I must admit a great flaw of mine has historically been getting heated/defensive/stubborn/aggressive in a debate (I’m a redhead, I can’t help it!). My conversations with Mollie, though, help me think through my beliefs more, help me empathize, help me be more considerate of others, and even help me improve my future rebuttals. We cannot deny that the political climate of today we see portrayed in the news is disheartening. We see only the extremes of either opinion, and the disease of identity politics is spread throughout the world. If we actually took the time to listen to one another and have thoughtful conversations, we could maybe see this disease slowly cured, or at least improved. Otherwise, we will only continue downhill.
Ryan Altschuler (J.R Masterman School)
I think that it is important for people of opposite political parties to talk to one another to better understand politics in our country. If people of different political parties don't talk to each other then, people will always be arguing about why their political party is better. Just because you don’t believe in the same ideas doesn’t mean you don’t have to get along, everybody still deserves to have their own views but you can still talk about politics in a less heated way. Just because a person might like another candidate doesn't mean their political views are wrong.
Henry Leonard (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Political opinions range very differently and it's fascinating how people think and how they have their political opinion. It's very interesting to talk to someone and hear how they think differently, it really opens your mind up to see how the world works. There are so many unanswered questions in the world, and just arguing about right and wrong is a very dated concept. It's better to see the world as you see it and have strong ideas and opinions through that lens and compare them with other people that are willing to hear what you have to say. It's sometimes hard to have respect for people that think in an opposite manner to you but you need to realize they probably feel the same about you, they're just mature enough to accept you.
Aiden Rubin Sanxhaku (J. R. Masterman)
In my opinion, it is important for people with different political beliefs to be in touch with one another. This allows for ideas to be shared, clarified, and disputed. Ultimately, it would allow for a better understanding of politics since you would see it from other standpoints that may even convince you. Interacting with others with different beliefs can sharpen your ideas. If you feel that you have a strong argument and basis of information, it can be proven if others can’t find a valid reason to disagree with it. If americans solely interact with others that share the same beliefs they will never know the honest truth to a discussion. This would cause for you to stick with your decision without doubt. Holding conversations and listen to people who share the same viewpoint will only cause for you to believe in a bais, untrue statement. But if you were to share your ideas with others, you see the topic from their point of view that can alter your stance on a subject for the better. Based on this information, I see “America in One Room” as a success. It allows for many people in the US to debate and express their opinions to others despite their beliefs. There are ups and downs to this but mainly it provides a beneficial occasion for the people of America. In conclusion, if you weren't able to look at the total amount of ideas, this would create a decision that could substantially damage peoples communities and even the country.
Gracelynn Whitaker (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I definitely think that this experiment was a success. Even if just one person walked out of that room with a greater understanding of the world we live in, then it did something good. I hope that people when talking about politics in the future are able to listen more than they talk- you never know just what you might find. I would also love to be involved in an experiment like this, however, I don’t think I feel qualified enough to talk about politics with that many other people. It would be pretty cool if this project were expanded to more people, but for some reason, I doubt that it would be as successful.
Valeria (J.R. Masterman)
It is definitely important for people of different political beliefs and from different backgrounds to discuss their side on the political spectrum. If they don’t America will split. Some people will be strictly democratic and others strictly republican. But when people from both sides come together and talk, everyone will be better off. Democrats and Republicans will be able to see where the thoughts from the people supporting the opposing side are coming from. This will allow everyone to see the other side of the story and how people have reasons for their opinions and beliefs politically, even though everyone might not agree with them.
Hayden Carroll (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I believe that talking with others who hold different political beliefs is important in this stage of our lives. I don't believe that it is important because we might change our views, but I believe it is important so that we learn how to interact with people in a cultured manner. At school, I have seen class discussions turn into war zones the instant that the discussion becomes political. Students begin to take sides, voices begin to raise, and it doesn't take long for comments to become personal attacks. As adolescents, we start to get a better idea of what our beliefs are, especially political, but with this comes the learning curve of finding out how we interact with certain people. In the article, a woman named Sydney Bosco said that she didn't think the purpose of the conference was to change people's opinions and beliefs, but "to get people to accept each other’s points of view in a civil manner". This is the idea that I'm getting at. We don't need to converse with others in an attempt to change our minds, but to learn how to talk to those with different political beliefs with respect and a mature approach.
Catherine Jonathan (J.R Masterman)
It is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another because both people can share their thoughts and opinions, and both people can make each other learn something new that each of them never thought about. When you talk with someone who has a different view on something than you do, and you listen to them, it gives you a chance to be more open-minded to other perspectives and not just your own. Sometimes, if you listen to somebody else’s ideas, you might even change your thoughts and agree with them because of what they shared. Even if you still don’t agree with them, when you talked with them, you still learned something new and interesting that you never thought about before, so by talking and listening to them, you can also gain knowledge that you would’ve never gotten if you hadn’t talked with them. If Americans don’t interact with people who have different political beliefs, and if they only talk and listen to people who share the same viewpoint, I think that the danger might be that when it comes to doing something as a country, such as voting for a president, people might just vote on someone because they think that they are a good leader, but they aren’t completely looking at the whole picture. In other words, they are not deciding on a leader wisely because they haven’t talked with someone who can give reasons not to vote for that person.
Grace Trimpey-Warhaftig (Hoggard High School in Wilmington NC)
I think that talking with other people about your political beliefs is important as long as you remember to listen as well. If we don’t listen to others' opinions how will we ever be able to come to an agreement about a topic? Talking about our opinions has the potential to allow us to be more open-minded or to see another side of the story. If we don't talk about our political opinions nothing will ever get accomplished. Although I see the value in talking to people with differing opinions I also know that it may be hard but just because a situation is difficult doesn't mean it isn't worth attempting.
Ian P (Philadelphia, J. R. Masterman School)
I think that it is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another people it lets people understand why someone would take a position different from theirs. I lets people be more open minded about political positions. I think it might be a danger if people only talk to other people with the same political viewpoints because then people would start getting entrenched in their own beliefs. They would start making enemies with people of the other position, and then the next thing you know is that the USA is divided. Yes, I do think the event was a success, because many people talked about how they changed their understanding of things by hearing other people's words. Yes, I do think that this event will affect attendee’s subsequent conversations about politics because this event taught them to be more open minded about positions and it taught them to be more calm and civil when talking about politics. Their talks in the future will be much more easy to engage with, and will be much more pleasant that just flat out arguing.

(1/2) This experiment is amazing to me and completely contradicted how I thought an experiment like this would work out. Thrusting 526 voters of different backgrounds into a room and asking them to sort out their political beliefs? That’s asking for chaos. In a day in age where politics seem to mostly revolve around our own opinions and not looking into other people’s, the fact that many were able to come out with a better understanding is amazing. It even gives me a little more hope for our politics as a whole. It is extremely critical that we expand our horizons and try to expose ourselves to other ideas, if not try to understand them. Our own experiences shape our views and opinions, and all too often we forget that other people have had experiences that have shaped their own views. You may have grown up learning one way which may have neglected to look at the whole picture, to which another person has the other half. We have been so caught up in what’s wrong and what’s right TO US. By only talking to people we know we agree with, we perpetuate our ignorance, because our viewpoints are constantly being affirmed over and over again without anyone ever questioning otherwise. We all think that the secretive and controlling government of North Korea is scary- the censorship and the idolized way that their leader is painted - but we do the same things to ourselves when we refuse to look at it from another point of view.
Bree Thomas (Julia R. Masterman, PA)
It is important because it can help for others to see a different standpoint on certain issues. It’s not to change a person’s political opinion, just to help others see eye to eye. We can learn how politics and world events affect people in a different situation and maybe support a more empathetic view. I think the danger of no interaction would be that every active voter in the country would be against one another because no one would have any reason to support a cause other than their own. I would like to participate in an experiment similar to “America in One Room” to further educate myself in politics. I recently realized it’s not always about the party you identify with. It’s more about how the decisions made by people high in government power affect the citizens living under them. Because your favorite candidate may do something you think is ok, but the people who must live with the weight of that choice may have a completely different judgment.
Daren L. (J.R. Masterman)
I, personally, wouldn't enjoy being in a room where everyone has a different view of the same topic. It would probably would be chaos. The conversations would be back and forth comments and disagreements. I think that some people might agree on one thing but disagree on something else a person says. Most of the time people have a response to what you are going to say. People can also turn what you say against you. For instance, if I say something to my mom that is against her she comes up a time when I that same thing and it gets annoying after awhile
Elliot C (J.R. Masterman)
I believe it is very important to get to understand the opinions and beliefs of other people around you or in a foreign land. Projects run more smoothly when people cooperate. Sometimes, though, people believe so strongly in something that they just ignore others and don't listen to their points of view. In my opinion, this meeting could help the participants learn to be more open-minded when talking about political topics. Because if people are too scared to be judged for their opinions, then the only people having success would be the ignorant people that just want to argue.
Mia Moss (J.R Masterman)
I think it's stupid that people hate other people for their beliefs. You wouldn't hate someone because they like yellow and you like green would you? I think we as a society should be more open minded to other people's opinions, and not judge because of the way people think. If you're a democrat that's okay. And if you're a republican, that's okay. People are allowed to think freely and differently The world isn't going to bend it's back and people aren't going to change their opinion just for you. So people need to accept that others will not be and think in the perfect way that you want them to. They're not you and you're not them. So please stop hating.
Semra S. (Julia R. Masterman School)
I think that it is important for people with different political beliefs to talk with one another since it can help one side at least understand the other side of the story, or understand the viewpoint of the other side of the story. If we all talked to each other then we might come up with an idea that supports both sides, or that both sides agree on. If we don't try to come together and suggest ideas that most people agree on, then this problem will probably never be solved since one side is going against the other, and we aren't coming together as a country and finding a solution.
Kaia Pang (Notre Dame San Jose)
I agree with your point about talking about different people’s political beliefs but I also believe that people have to trust who they are with. The person also has to be willing to hear the other side as taking points of discussion rather than reasons why one is better or why the other view sucks. I think that your evidence on how the 526 strangers came together to talk about issues like this might not be the best evidence that could have been chosen because all of the strangers volunteered for this weekend so that’s were all willing to be open to the opinions. That is much different than if one were to go up to a random stranger and start to explain their political standpoint because the listener might take it the wrong way. If people just randomly start blurting out their views to anyone and everyone, there would be unnecessary chaos and violence. So although it is important to discuss different beliefs, there needs to be a metal understanding between all people in the conversation that these are not attacks on other standpoints or points trying to convert people but rather just taking poi its to have a discussion and see different sides. Being able to comprehend that there are different opinions to everything and accepting that all opinions are true, will help to make conversations like these work.
Gianna Sticco (Masterman)
I can’t imagine the topics they would discuss in that room, so therefore I wouldn’t want to be in that room. I feel like in this day and age, if you say anything people will be prepared to attack you for it. That’s why I don’t say my opinion. You can’t go anywhere and not have someone disagree with you. This world is just full of hate and cruelty, it seems like there isn’t any hope left. Being in a room like that, people probably can’t even hear themselves. They were probably all screaming at one, not letting anyone else hear what they had to say. People need to learn to hear others out. They may not want to, but someone could make a point that you may agree with.
Sophie Jermann (J.R Matserman)
It is important to understand the many different beliefs and viewpoints about political topics. Some people are so stubborn and can be rude about their political beliefs compared to others when talking to other people with a different opinion. From personal experience I rarely share my political beliefs because people are so quick to attack and be rude about what other people think rather than realizing that other people have their own opinions. Whenever I see other people coming out and saying what they really believe, which is sometimes very different from the people around you, people make rude faces and say rude things and judge you when they aren't being fair whatsoever. I think doing experiments like the one done in the article is important because people can really understand other people and listen to why they think this, rather than being so quick to judge and not hearing people out.
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
I think it's very important for people with differing opinions to talk to each other in order for people to see the other side of the story. Humans, by nature, hear what they want to and ignore the rest. When people watch the news they can easily ignore the things they don't agree with but this is not the case when having a one on one conversation with others. It’s very hard to look interested but not be listening. You are forced to take their views into consideration or at least listen to them which helps you see the other side of the argument. This can either soften your hard stance or firm up your beliefs. Talking with other opinions also makes you realize that there are normal people who believe these things and not just the extremists you hear about on the news. It gives you a new look on the world.

Talking with different people who have different political beliefs, not only could be interesting or difficult but also could be bored, because as human being we always have different thoughts as such in religions or cultures. Even though in America exit just two types of policies which are democrats and republicans, which both wants to turn America into a better society; this cause problems between those political parties. Despite the fact that politics exists throughout the world, there are democratic countries that as such do not respect the rights and thoughts of the people who grants the right to the presidency or power. However, talking with different people who have different political beliefs can be good because we learn from others; how they think, what they want to achieve and how they think to do it.
Antonio LB (YC CLIP)
To talk about political I think it is very important, especially when we talk about it with people who have different beliefs. In the article (Why Is It Important for People with Differ Political Beliefs to Talk to Each Other) I could learn that is essential to talk with others about the political viewpoint, because in that way we can learn many things like, what experience they have, or what point of view they have about; health care, immigration, the economy or the environment. Overall if we know that everybody have different beliefs about the political we can understand each other and we can have more contact with others without confront.
shamsun-LB (YC-CLIP)
It is important for people with different political belief to talk each other because people share there life experience and thought and might came up particular point of view which can help give us some exceptional direction. But there is a various people coming from disparate situation and they also frightens everyday life their knowledge, emotion, and thinking gave some idea .even though, it’s really hard work to convince other political belief. When they Making a group discussion some people agree some people not but they also tell why they are disagree. Also there a small group debates can understand us pros and cons for the country.so it is important to talk.
Mariama-LB (YC CLIP)
I think is important for people with different political beliefs to discuss between them even though is difficult because everyone has their own ideas and opinions. They should find where they can stay and discuss about politics because all of them have their own reason so if they talk to each they will have a better understanding. However, discussing with each other doesn’t mean that they can change someone's mind but by trying to convince him by giving strong arguments and facts can maybe change someone's vision. For example in the article, America in one Room was not successful because many people thought that the purpose of this discussion was to change people mind about political however it was the opposite the main purpose of putting different people in the same room is that everyone should have the same idea that they should accept each other whatever their political beliefs. I also think that America in One Room was a success because talking to someone different from you can help you to understand a lot of things that are happening but you did not get informed.

Each person has an own point of view about different issues, one of this is politic. Political beliefs exist in the all world, the politic controls the world. So each person has an own ideal which can be conservator or liberal. Talking about political like the case these 526 voters represent all of America who spent a weekend together talking about politic everyone had a different idea of each issue because we never can have the same idea, although we can have similar ideas with similar purposes. In the world with a lot of ideals is difficult to coincide the all group, it can never come to a decision of which is better because each person has their own better, but the lesson is that we need to respect each idea, each point of view about political issues and prevent a chaos.

Discussing in a group in any subject is not easy especially if people came from different taught and beliefs. Whenever meetings held for political discussion, offices, parents-teacher consultation for solution is important. In my opinion when we are meeting with various kind of people we should have enough knowledge about that subject. Sometimes it’s hard to control our emotion when we argue or debate for certain reason. However, politician are serving our country to the nation and playing a very important part. Therefore, we should allow other people to put their thoughts to bring a change. Nevertheless, American should sit in a one room to improve our culture, society for future, such as, when parents are having discussion with kids, then they have better friendly relationship. Finally, all group of people should shear their opinion in a certain limit with respect and reach to the solution. I would definitely like to attend an event to know more information and shear mine as well.
Martha-LB (YC CLIP)
It is natural that people have different political beliefs according to their life experiences and the best way to find a path to live in community is through communications. It is important to have different opinions because, as it happens in the sciences, these discussions enrich the knowledge about politic ideas from all the people in a group. If people only debate with other ones who have the same point of view, they will never achieve solutions to the problems they are living for a long time ago. It is logic to hear the results in the event “America in One Room” because political beliefs are strong as a religion that everyone professes and we have not pretended to change these kinds of deep issues, but we can find a way that other people know about how other ones think. Definitely, listening is more important than imposing your own ideas, and every attempt that allows people to approach and listen to others in success for society
Genesis-LB (YC CLIP)
In my opinion, I think talking about politic believes is so difficult when the other person has different believes. It is simple to understand, everybody consider that he/she has the best opinions, and he/she is right. Anyone can change these thoughts. I am not familiar about politics, but I remember when my uncle argued with my dad about politic believes; everyone left this place because when they started, they did not stop. They spent a lot of time arguing who is the best candidate. I consider we need to respect every politic believes everyone has. It does not mean I have to accept every politic believes or to be agree, this means I have to tolerate every politic believes and listen another ideas about other politics because I do not know if may I am wrong, maybe I can change.
MariaQ-LB (YC CLIP)
Expressing our opinions about politics is not always pleasant, especially with people who do not have the same opinion as us. Sometimes talking about politics is the theme of many people when they are in a meeting with friends or family. It is important that people with different political beliefs deliberate their thoughts and share with others because this can help others decides what can be correct or not about choosing a person for a political charge in the government. Personally I believe that it is helpful to find people who can provide us significant information about an important topic such a political. To obtain the appropriate information in themes that are really important for our lives will help us by the time when we have to decide something important in the political field.
Sungida-LB (YC CLIP)
Bring all different political beliefs people it really difficult task, most of the time people do not want to listen other people voice. It is important to talk with other politics believers. People shows different points of view because they have different experience in their life. Only the way we can understand them by talking with them. If we not talk to them we will make negativity in our mind for other believer. Yes I experience a conversation with other political believers, first we argue, conflict, after that we also their issues their point of view. This experience helps to gain new perception to seethe issue. I think the '' America in One Room '' experiment gains its successful intention that people don't change their belief but now they change their understanding.
July - LB (YC CLIP)
In my opinion, it was an adequate way to share beliefs with each other. First, because you learn not just different point of view, also you learn how people can be tolerable a respect different ways to think. The other hand it was important because usually people build their ideas based on social, familiar, cultural influences or simply what they can learn on the environment. In this way sometimes, they cannot approach to reality. When you share different thoughts it can help to expand your perspective and with evidence open your mind, even if you do not change your idea, you will know that exist other point to consider. Another important point to reflect is that in the event there were people from different place, belief, old, and race. That show that there is not distinction between them. I would like to participate in on event like an “America in One Room”, because of the knowledge that you can acquire, learn about other perspectives, and in determinate situation if I want give my opinion; I would like have robust arguments to opine something bases in determinate topic.
Melany-LB (YC CLIP)
What I learn in this article and what I can understand is that every person in a different part of the world and country has a different way to think about the situations happen in life, that sometimes is good to heard the opinions of the other one and that helps you to look the things in a different perspective and angle is good listen the ideas of others that will open your mind and your knowledge. I not interesting in political things but when a situation or idea coming they make a reunion to discuss what is the pros and the cons to solve or do the idea and whenever the side have more vote that side wins, they take their time to decide what is the best for the country and not all of them feel comfortable with the choice but they have to respect the idea and the opinions of the others that how it works.
Mason Evans (Hoggard High School Wilmington, NC)
Talking to people with different political beliefs is difficult. Impossible even. It seems like talking to a brick wall, because every time you explain a certain point, they immediately refute that point and never listen to your rationale completely. That is why it is not important to simply talk to someone with different political beliefs from you; it is important to listen and understand and constructively converse with someone with different political beliefs. If people with different political beliefs do not listen to each other, we just end up with polar sides of the political spectrum arguing for the exact opposite things. Without compromise, there is no change.
