Trump is like the naked emperor. How many adults see him parade around showing off his fine new suit when we all see what a small man he is. Only a child like Greta has the spine to stand up and point out his nudity.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
Trump is 100 years out of touch with reality. In today's world you can step onto a plane and be on the other side of the world in 12 hours, so yes this is a global society and while we are still independent nations, we have to acknowledge that what we do here does effect the rest of this world. Now the fool can pick on a young lady that is only trying to make this world a safer place, but we all know that, that is Trump being the petty little person that he is. The people of this country understand that if there is to be a tomorrow for generations to come we have to do a better job of taken care of our environment.
CK (Christchurch NZ)
I just heard on NZ radio news that when a reporter asked Trump what he thought of Greta Thunberg, that he answered with a sarcastic remark that made me laugh (sorry, I had to admit it but he can be funny, sometimes, in a shocking way); his answer was, 'she seems like a very happy girl looking forward to a bright future'.
Heather Inglis (Hamilton, Ontario)
Trump claims he withheld $250 million voted by Congress to Ukraine because he wanted other countries to step up and contribute a share so the US alone did not provide aid to Ukraine. Besides that being incorrect as European countries do assist Ukraine, by Trump's reasoning, why should they? In Trump's world, it's each country for itself; globalists need not apply. It's disturbing to see this shambolic man address the UN as leader of any country, let alone the US.
C.L.S. (MA)
On "globalism," Trump is anathema. For all of us now living on this planet, our future will depend on international cooperation, which is globalism by another name. Will human beings (organized in nations) be able to cooperate jointly on critical survival issues including nuclear weapons, climate change, and inequality, or will we inevitably self-destruct in mindless nationalism or populism expressed in "us vs. them," "America First," and other zero sum nonsense? I think it was Carl Sagan, in his brilliant "Pale Blue Dot" view of the Earth in boundless space, who said that any given intelligent species on a given planet probably has a 5% at best chance of survival. We had better get back to cooperation vs. nationalism, and quickly.
BB (Washington State)
It’s time for Trump to put his money ( or his bank loans ) where his mouth is . He can set an example against globalism by shutting down all his overseas properties and business dealings, immediately. I would also remind ourselves of our failure in getting involved in WW II too late to save many lives because of isolationist nationalist policies.
Bob Bascelli (Seaford NY)
The last time we took the 'sovereign and independent nations' route, we ran into WWl and WWll. Globalism has, and will continue to be, the superior pathway for the majority of the world’s nations. The U.S. can swim alone in its own tank while the world’s nations play together in their sprawling aquarium.
Lonnie (Brooklyn, NY)
'The Future does not belong to Globalists...' Does Donald and the lot of angry Americans from the heartland who also rail against 'Globalism' even KNOW WHAT IT MEANS? It Ain't Communism, folks. Globalism ALREADY HAPPENED, folks. Globalism is the Internet. Globalism is the ability to step off the plane into ANY country (Except North Korea) and walk about. Globalism is someone setting up a Website Shop Online and Selling their wares or skills ANYWHERE on the Planet. Globalism is Commerce, Multinational Corporations and Financial Markets that react to the SECOND from any Time Zone. Globalism is the New Age and it's here to stay. Oh...and not to put too fine a point on it...the reason we don't see or hear from Jared or Ivanka right now is because they are currently globetrotting on the Taxpayer's Dollar to expand TRUMP INC as far as they can using White House Privilege. Trump, as usual, LIES when he talks to ordinary folks and the TV. But Trust this New Yorker... Trump Inc and Donald LOVE and have NO PROBLEMS with Globalism. As for the rest of you, especially the people who really don't know what 'Globalism' is outside of the right-wing memes... Wake up and smell the coffee! It ain't 1950 anymore and Never will be ever again.
Bob Bascelli (Seaford NY)
@Lonnie Nailed it. Well said.
Audrey AF (New Yorker)
@Lonnie Well done, Lonnie. You said it better than I could have. The right wing ragers against communism all those years ago did not know what that was, either. I guess ignorance is genetic. Scare words and scared uninformed people from the fifties to 2019. Tactics like those are set in amber.
CA John (Grass Valley, CA)
Treasonous Trump speaks of patriots! 1. He doesn't know what the word means. 2. He got a Vietnam War deferral for a bogus heel spur. 3. He's best friends with our adversaries in Russia and Korea, and elsewhere. 4. He has contempt for real patriots. 5. He has contempt for the Constitution. 6. He has contempt for the American people and our values. I'd call it chutzpah but that takes some actual moxie, which he doesn't have.
FJR - ATL (Atlanta)
At this point "United Nations" seems like an oxymoron.
Stephan (Home Of The Bill Of Rights)
Being a globalist and a patriot are mutually exclusive? Our president and his supporters are simpletons and are destroying this great country. If one believes all great countries and governments last about 300 years then we are almost through.
MIMA (heartsny)
Can’t Donald Trump just have a sick day and call in sick? It would so alleviate our embarrassment.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Me-firstism never leads to amity.
Austin Ouellette (Denver, CO)
Trump is blowing the dog whistle so hard that it’s reanimating German Shepards from WWII battlefields across Germany, Austria and France.
Robert Schmid (Marrakech)
Not one word about climate change.
Bob Bascelli (Seaford NY)
@Robert Schmid To heck with climate change. It's bad for business and corporate profits, and isn't that all we really care about?
GGram (Newberg, Oregon)
i dream of a world led by the Greta’s instead of the Trumps, Boris Johnson’s, or Bolsanaros.
BB (Washington State)
Donald Trump and Patriots is an oxymoron. He has undermined our Nation in every possible way. He is likely a traitor. He values Demagogues in Russia, North Korea, Saudi Arabia more than the Patriots that started this Country or continue to fight for our Country. He showed his patriotism with his cowardly phony bone spurs. And we are one World . No matter what, we affect and are affected by what all Nations do. It will take intellectually honest , informed, science based , humane leadership to save Our Globe.
James (Seatlle)
Trump crossed the "red line" of corruption and yet the Americans sit and watch their nation be stolen by a steak salesman. He asked for foreign help.....AGAIN.
Anne Squire (Walnut Creek CA)
Re: Thomas Paine “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
R A Go bucks (Columbus, Ohio)
The stable genius goes to the UNITED NATIONS and advocates for Nationalism and Xenophobia. This guy has got to go. I'm sick of this.
J J Davies (San Ramon California)
I think the time has come for Boris Johnson and Donald Trump to switch hair pieces.
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
Other nations should ignore Trump. Don’t attend, get up, walk out, leave him speaking to a dark, empty room. That’ll be familiar territory for him since it’s clear that his brain is completely vacuous.
Wondering Woman (KC, MO)
@Misplaced Modifier They may not get up and leave but I suspect they do ignore him. He cries wolf. Then he forgets he cried wolf and blames the wolf, then he forgets that and says what we really need is a good wolf. Maybe he is following in the great tradition of Ronald Reagon and is developing Alzheimers.
JANET MICHAEL (Silver Springs)
The United Nations was established 74 years ago by globalists who were acutely aware that alliances were key to keeping world order.Unless you lived during World War Two it is difficult to,appreciate the “ blood, sweat and tears” of that terrible time-no films or history books can explain to the next generation the perils which were faced. We are now at least three generations from that time and the careless and clueless have decided that nationalism is just fine-wave the flag for your own country and try to ignore the troubles of the rest of the world. The problem is that the troubles come to your shores as they did with German UBoats and with Pearl Harbor-for us it is refugees, trade wars, technology transfer and climate degradation.Time for head in the sand nationalists to get real and realize that life on earth is a global problem. For skeptics-I grew up during the war.
Lara (Brownsville)
Witnessing the performance of the President of the United States and what he advocates for the future of the world, is really painful. It becomes more painful when one realizes that there are millions of people in the USA who support him. At the UN, where leaders from around the world are gathered, it is really embarrassing to watch our president acting and speaking like a soapbox salesman saying things that may have been appropriate a century ago. How do we explain Trump and his followers? The dismal state of American public education. Serious history is not taught at the schools for people to learn the awesome responsibility of being citizens of the richest and most powerful nation in the world. Geography, foreign languages and cultures are all woefully neglected. Now, with television and the internet they are even becoming illiterate. Sad.
Ellen (Colorado)
To say that "the future does not belong to globalists" is the equivalent of saying that the future does not belong to the human race; because we either work together here on out, or we don't survive as a species.
JimBob (Encino Ca)
All that "sovereign and independent nations" have brought the world is strife and conflict. Globalism is in its infancy, but one day it may give us a much more peaceful and interconnected world. No guarantee, but it's worth trying as the present system of armed camps hasn't worked out very well -- unless you're an arms manufacturer or a demagogue.
Stevem (Boston)
Sorry, no. Globalism is still the future, but the US will be playing catchup with the world under our next legitimate president.
debating union (US)
USA seriously, are you not deeply embarrassed by this? If you are not, please let's be real patriots, withdraw behind our national boundaries and discontinue all trade and contact with the Rest of the World. I know, I know, the Rest of the World benefits from the interest American taxpayers have to pay to service the national debt, but even so, the arrogance of Trump may be enough to get them to negotiate a settlement of the debt, so they can be rid of us.
Pottree (Joshua Tree)
Isn’t it reassuring to see the world in the capable hands of such magnanimous leaders? A few of the major players from second rate nations, like China, Russia, and Venezuela didn’t bother to show up, but so what? Look at the starring lineup straight out of Central Casting! With a cast like this, we could easily do a remake of World War I. And with the anti-vaxxers in the wings, we might even also have a repeat of the 1918 flu epidemic. Gott love those traditional values!
Yeah (Chicago)
What is the basis for Trump to complain about China’s treatment of Hong Kong if globalization is dead and loving one’s own nation is the primary source of order. By his own standards Trump should be criticizing the HK protests, not the PRC government. The basis is that Trump’s nationalism requires constant battles whereby the nation is defined by who it is fighting. Picking a fight with China over protests Trump doesn’t actually support will suffice: The Nnation in a battle with The Other is the world that Trump and Bannon and Miller see and wish to occur. For Trump it’s mostly his sociopath personality, but for others it’s the way to reorder the world.
CJ (Canada)
So forget any vision for the planet or our shared humanity? Trump wants us to worship the same bloody nationalism that brought two world wars, a Cold War, the Vietnam War, countless Israeli-Arab conflicts, and the ever wars in the Middle East. Despite fact that multinationalism succeeded in resolving many generation-old conflicts, secured human rights, and expanded prosperity to countries like China and India, populists claim it benefits only the elites. That's a lie. These self-styled patriots are really despots and crooks who've figured out that it's easier to subvert governments and laws in a dog-eat-dog world. They drape themselves in the national flag is handy because it whips the mob into unreason. They're against reason, you see. Also against human rights, transparency, a free press, and the rule of law. They are kleptocrats and criminals. We should be horrified by a president who speaks this way. Substitute "Russia" for "America", and this is a speech that could have been given by Putin.
CEWelles (Ak)
Was there an exodus when tRump spoke. If there was not I guess Greta’ s speech made little impression
ohio (Columbiana County, Ohio)
It is strange that the American networks keep repeating Trump's lines over and over again. Just what they did in 2016. Did any commentator even bother to recount the history of nationalism in the 20th Century that resulted in 100 million military and civilian deaths? I think the news media and members of Congress should address the names of the people in the Administration who write Trump's speeches. Are they using as source material speeches made in Germany in 1932?
Sarah (Chicago)
Who sets the agenda for these meetings? Why allow this grandstanding contrary to the purpose of the very organization? Why give these awful people platforms? The face to face meetings and connections are valuable. The speechifying is not.
P Maris (Miami)
Speaking to the U.N. about “globalists”. What irony. Or is Trump’s definition non-traditional, special to him and a few others, ie: Orban in Hungary?
EW (Glen Cove, NY)
Besides using doublespeak to brainwash the population, an Orwellian dystopia also used the concept of forever wars to motivate the population. Here, in the UN, of all places, Trump starts down that path. He believes nations should act selfishly, hence be in conflict with each other, forever, or at least until only one nation left standing. His world view is the exact opposite of all tenants of Christianity.
Edwin Ochmanek (Vancouver, BC)
Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are destined to vote conservative.
Oscar Quiroga (São Paulo - Brazil)
Trump saying that “the future does not belong to globalists, but to patriots”, must be understood that he wants global future not available to all, but exclusively to a few anointed
John (Columbus)
Could Trump have been more boring and uninspiring? No wonder Wilbur Ross fell asleep. I hope most of the U.N. reps were also sleeping or doing something more productive, like reading ingredients from a vending machine snack.
Dirk D (Berlin)
This speech proves (again) that this man gets his "knowledge" from series & movies. "Patriots" will save the world. I bet he is thinking he could be some kind of "John McClane" or "Rambo" and save the US from the villains.
cornbread17 (Gettysburg, PA)
100 years from now, (if we still exist), Greta Thunberg will be remembered as a force for good. Donald Trump? Not so much.
CJ (Canada)

Conservative Catastrophe (Tucson)
Nationalism is antiquated, myopic and dangerous. We can and must do better.
John (NYC)
"The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots.” As a millennial who was raised on the internet, I strongly disagree with this statement. If anything, the increased connectivity that technology has brought us has ideally served to decrease international boundaries and erase differences between groups. I feel like my generation and are younger are possibly the most cosmopolitan human population in history (although I can't back this up with any studies to wit).
Ted Reynolds (Ann Arbor, MI)
Word is that Trump is about to call for united international action against Iran and Venezuela I'm glad to know he will be on the record as believing such joint action would be acceptable. That is because I believe the proper immediate response should be a countering formal motion that the U.N. General Assembly should call for nonviolent united international action against the outstanding violator of international norms in the world today, Trump's American administration. Trump is on record as denying any obligation to respect international law, including international courts and treaties and Security Council decisions. We should also determine if any government which denies the basic obligations and commitments of the United Nations can continue to sit in the General Assembly or on the Security Council. I suggest that it is time for the nations of the world to make known which of them is willing to stand up against this rogue state. If some other regimes choose to stand with Trump, at least we will recognize who they are; in the 1930s they were Germany and Italy and Japan, and the League of Nations didn't meet the challenge. Can we be smart enough and brave enough to do better?
JRB (KCMO)
Painful to watch. And...I...will...act...to.........do...whatever......is...necessary. You’d almost think he’d never seen the speech before.
Andrea (NJ/NY)
Reading is not fundamental for Trump - and it shows.
Linda Sperling (New York City)
@JRB - He probably hadn't seen the speech before and we all know reading and public speaking are not his strong suit.
Kate Doyle (New York City)
You call Egypt’s Sisi, Turkey’s Erdogan, Brazil’s Bolsonaro and Britain’s Johnson “bombastic” - that’s a gentle way to refer to four leaders who are probably best described as autocrats. They are men who would be king, not just loudmouths who like the sound of their own voice.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
You'd think that with an agenda like Trump's the man would be wildly popular in his own country. But still less than 50% approval in the polls. It must be his hair color or locking up migrant kids or lying through his teeth about everything or something.
DM (Tampa)
... And the prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, is still furious with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India over the Indian crackdown last month in the disputed territory of Kashmir. ... Regarding article 370 let it be noted that Pakistan did that for its part of Kashmir back in 1970's.
MAC (PA)
@DM Correct. But also let it be known that in that part of Kashmir people are not locked up in their houses and have all lines of communication open. What a scandal!!
pealass (toronto)
Bolsonaro, Trump... Their words (and lies) bring shivers. Hardly people I want to shape the future of the world.
Robert Schmid (Marrakech)
Sounds like poor leaders day at the U.N. So much for democracy.
Andrea (NJ/NY)
Trump’s speech to the United Nationa is screaming Nationalism. This American is embarrassed and heartbroken at each and every Trump spectacle - this caps it (for now).
Carl Ian Schwartz (Paterson, NJ)
@Andrea So am I. Trump is paid to lead this nation over a cliff and, if you follow the money, so was Johnson and Brexit.
JA (Mi)
Are there no sane, democratically elected leaders willing to talk? what's with this line-up? these are the last people I want to hear from.
GV (San Diego)
The primary threat to peace, Mr. Gutierrez, is the elites on the Left who won’t let governments deal with the intolerant minority who uses violence to intimidate the peaceful majority.
Dominic (Minneapolis)
@GV Can you explain to me how Mr. Trump, a second-generation rich kid who lives in a coastal city in a tower on the fanciest avenue is not one of the "elite". Asking for a friend.
JCAZ (Arizona)
I’m watching Mr. Trump’s speech now and can’t believe that he and the audience are able to keep a straight face.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
How interesting, and sad, that the UN General Assembly has to start with the interactions of four well-known despots. Oh well, let's trust that whatever is discussed is recorded, so we may draw judgment of the iniquities that will likely derive in future misrulings...to reinforce, even justify, the abuse of power. We are living interesting times, but not necessarily renascentist; the bullying variety instead. Is there any hope for justice to shine again, in spite of the heavy 'tyrant' clouds we are witnessing today? Let's hope so...if we remember William R. Alger's optimism: "After every storm the sun will smile, for every problem there is a solution, and the soul's indefeasible duty is to be of good cheer".
Heiko Goes (Germany, Hamburg)
I have only one thing to say to Greta and the young generation: Thank you so much for your peaceful actions and words. You are the only ones who can save our planet. Don’t stop and go on strongly.
Girish Kotwal (Louisville, KY)
@Heiko Goes from Germany. Greta is 50 years late. Maybe her grand mother should have given the same speech. The climate change we see today is the result of the pollution and carbon emissions of just the past 50 years. Just imagine how much fossil fuel has been used in the past 50 years by gas/diesel guzzling vehicles.
Bob Bascelli (Seaford NY)
@Heiko Goes Greta Thunberg is passionate, thrilling, and a force of nature. Then there is the conservative news media who mock young people, like Greta, blaming their activism on teachers who brainwash them with trash. Why is something wrong because someone, with no relevant qualifications, says it is? Kids are being taught the latest in scientific discovery while many of their parents feebly absorb the conservative propaganda springing from their TV sets. A teachers mission is to stimulate and educate a student’s mind while the mission of conservative media is to be at the service of the Republican President. It’s quite apparent, young adults are more keen on keeping an open mind, while many who are older prefer closing the door on the facts of life.
