What a waste! Why burn money on sports at a university that really should be worried about its academic culture and reputation. Then again, it is America.

excellent!!

John Mercer Langston was not the first African-American elected to Congress. That honor goes to Joseph Rainey of South Carolina, elected in 1870. There were 15 other African-Americans elected to Congress before Langston. But Langston was the first from Virginia.

Why, Howard U., do you tolerate golf? Outside of one black player in the PGA, and an almost non existence of people of color participating in the sport, it certainly sends the wrong message to a society persistently grappling with racial animosity and social isolation. Why golf?

I hope the scholaship funds are in good shape.

"Sport does not build character; it reveals it." -- sportswriter and commentator Heywood Hale Broun NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL -- full of near-saints, right. Well yes, there are a few like Curry but why so few?

Golf is still business, good move.

John Mercer Langston was not the first African American elected to Congress. Both Hiram Revels and Joseph Rainey were elected in 1870.

How about finding the women’s lacrosse team?

This is a very generous gift. Personally, I would prefer to see the funds spent on scholarships to medical school. That being said, it's his money and he gets to decide how to spend it, not me.

1 to 2 million children die annually in the world for lack of medicine for treatable diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, or AIDS. The amount of money spent by Mr. Curry on golf could save perhaps 100,000 children.
Bob Hillier (Honolulu)
@David Rosen The issue is opportunity. Golf is like an outdoor meeting room for much of the corporate world, one that excludes non-golfers. Also, rather than criticizing Stephen Curry for his generosity, consider aiming your criticism for the many millionaires and billionaires who share little or none of their wealth.
Jonathan Blees (Benicia, California)
@David Rosen: Do you ever spend money on leisure activities, such as movies, travel, or (shudder) sports? When you can answer “no”, only then you can criticize Mr. Curry.

Great, another athletics program at an HBCU that will either be amongst the worst in the NCAA or that will have to rely on foreign players to not be a complete disgrace. If Curry and Howard really want to give opportunities to black athletes, they would be better off resurrecting the baseball team. Better yet, Curry could have funded men's and women's wrestling teams. There are tons of talented black wrestlers, in particular across the Southeast where wrestlers in general don't have an opportunity to wrestle in college because there are few college programs in that region. Also, I believe Howard would have been the first NCAA D1 school to sponsor women's varsity wrestling, giving it a structural advantages that would make it a genuine national championship contender (much like UMES was in bowling).

I find it remarkable that Howard University, which a few years ago faced a lot of criticism for doling out over a million dollars in administrator bonuses, is relying on a superstar athlete to fund a seven-figure program. Ey, whatever gets the club house named after you, right?
david (salt lake city)
Thanks, Steph! Hard to understand why so many people are critical of your act of generosity. You’ve shared your bounty with others in an area that interests and inspires you. Period.

No university needs a professional sports team. Any university, any sport. Why doesn't he give the library money to buy more books, or endow scholarships (for real students, not sports players)?
RL (Castro Valley, CA)
@Jonathan Katz Please note that: "Stephen Curry has supported a wide variety of charities throughout his career, including the Animal Rescue Foundation, the United Nations Foundation, and Nothing But Nets. He also travels all over the world fighting causes such as AIDS, animals, children, environment, health, human rights, peace, and women." He continues to choose causes that broaden his scope.
mutabilis (Hayward)
@Jonathan Katz You are sooooo right! A seven figure sum for a spoiled sport is outrageous.

The 1% helping the 10%.. so thankful to have millionaires and billionaires.. choosing what the nation's policy objectives should be. Hey, its there money, its not like we can have a democracy and have a say in our economy.
Sparky (NYC)
I can't help but think the money would have been better spent on academic scholarships.
William Thomas (California)
Steph Curry really does represent what's great about this country. In stark contrast to the "golfer" in the white house who has a reputation for cheating at the game.
r. brown (Asheville, NC)
@William Thomas There is no comparison between the integrity of Stephen Curry and Donald Trump that does not churn your stomach. Curry is a positive role model–Trump a pariah–that god help us–our youth will emulate.
