U.S. and China Resume Trade Talks Amid Dim Prospects for Deal

Why in the world would China now give Trump a win that could elevate him to another term? Did Trump not think of that as he again and again insulted China? Did he just assume that he could bully them? Does he not know that China of all countries has a history of thinking long term? China would be foolish to sign a trade deal at this point. If they don't Trump will be right exposed as a ignorant, one-trick pony President who's simply made things worse for everyone.

China will not give this president ice in winter. Take it to the bank.

Trade Wars are easy to win! We're tired of all the winning! Please make it stop!

We don't have the technology of Huawei 5G so maybe we should start stealing from them. They are going to crush us in AI with a magnitude of data as they don't have privacy laws and the Chinese don't seem to care.

Don't worry between now and the election, probably closer to the 2020 election Trump will cave and announce he has signed the greatest trade deal in history although it will be a shame with a few bones thrown to him. Very similar to what he did with Mexico.

Great job to have for the US negotiating team with such a low bar to clear. Government paid China vacation comes to my mind.

I still get the feeling that Trump doesn't understand that the money "we're taking in" from tariffs is coming from American taxpayers and not China. My company just added 17% surcharge to our customers to help pay these tariffs. I am all for staying strong on China and it is one of the only areas where I am even remotely in alignment with der Furher Drumpf but his apparent lack of understanding of the complexities and ramifications of these negotiations scares the death out of me. I don't even want to think about Iran and and N.Korea

Of course Mr Trump counted benefiting politically from his 'tariffs wars' showing the 'traditional' U.S. tough stance against American's 'enemies'... However, what Mr Navarro failed to calculate more accurately was the real very possible negative effects of those troubled trades. The analysts nevertheless were clear about that: trade wars don't benefit anyone... Chinese in particular are not disingenuous about the political effect this could give in the middle of Trump's election campaign and they're playing that card very smartly...

China doesn't want to appear to use the trade talk to influence the coming USA presidential election and doesn't want to have an agreement now, not knowing if the next adminstration will srcap the whole deal and start all over again, just like what Trump did in previous trade talk. More, China doesn't want to agree to Trump's America First/MAGA demands. The trade war was initiated by Trump when he unilaterally imposes trade tariffs so as to force the other side to succumb to his demands. That fails miserably. So to settle the trade war, he has to dismantle his tariffs then talk.

“Meeting after meeting,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “I think that China will probably say: ‘Let’s wait. It’s 14, 15 months till the election. Let’s see if one of these people that give the United States away, let’s see if one of them could possibly get elected.’” And again, we see DJT projecting the very behavior that he performs on almost a daily basis - the selling out of the United States of America. He’s only concerned about his personal brand and wealth. He could give two hoots about the well-being of our citizenry and democracy.

Yeah we can criticize Trump for failing to reach a deal. The truth is that the China is run by a brutal regime. They want to control their population and eventually other governments. That we continued trading with that country well after we figured out their intentions shows the weaknesses in our government. Decoupling and limiting China are the only real options. The alternative is to continue enriching it and letting its power spread.

How is it possible that there are "dim prospects" for a trade deal? I thought we had the greatest negotiator, who was going to put together the greatest deals.

The NYT wrote about the only village in China where people were allowed to be buried in caskets. If the State can enforce that everyone be cremated, why can they not control software, music and designer piracy? They don’t do it, because they don’t care if they rip off companies or countries because it’s all about them. We should hold tough on these trade agreements until they clean up their act.

I project 72 hours, at most, then Trump starts throwing twitter hand grenades at China again over trade. He can't help himself.. he has to always be the center of attention.

@Chuck Followup to my original comment Well... he is predictable.... even though it's generally always bad predictions. /eyeroll https://www.politico.com/story/2019/07/30/trump-china-trade-deal-1626269

If the market tanks, he’s out - and he’s knows it... no one cares about anything else.

@Arblot then as much as I hate to say it - having my life savings invested in stocks - please God, let the market tank...

Republicans were determined to repeal the ACA without any replacement healthcare plan despite vague never realized promises of something better. The same thing happened with trade deals. Before devastating the agribusinesses in this country, with perhaps permanent damage, while imposing tariff charges to consumer goods that Americans have to pay, they should have had an actual plan. This won't end well.
Luke (New York)
It has already ended badly Anne and this is the whole point. China has been stealing our technology for decades. Listen to the NPR American superconductor podcast if you want to really understand what is at stake.
Suppan (San Diego)
@Luke It has not ended badly, mainly because it has not ended yet. Trump is fighting the right battle, but is he fighting it wisely? I don't know, and believe nobody else does. So much of it depends on the Chinese. They can wait until their max pain point, and agree to protect intellectual property and pass legislation to that effect. Then as trade resumes they can simply not enforce the laws or slow walk (just like our folks do.) There is no simple or easy solution, but we need to sharpen our State department, CIA, Commerce and Treasury departments, and educate the public on economic patriotism and optimism in the future.

All of the attacks on the cities and people of color are hiding the dire straits of many farmers. I just checked and agriculture exports to China are way down.

Hopefully, these negotiations, as well as the Brexit, WTO and other trade negotiations, will not become a long distance runaround.
Suppan (San Diego)
@James F. Clarity IV Maybe you are onto something here. News has become about stirring controversy and outrage, making people riveted to the show waiting for the next sensation. This has made multimillionaires of mediocre people like Hannity, Meghyn Kelly, etc... So incompetent government, unending arguments and negotiations with escalating drama might be the new growth industry and millionaire maker. What an awful time we live in.
James F. Clarity IV (Long Branch, NJ)
There should be more news on negotiations to reform the WTO, so judges could be appointed to the Appellate Body, which could go out of operation in December 2019 due to lack of a quorum.
