It signals that China has essentially given up on having a stable, mutually beneficial relationship with Trump.” Ha, as if that's what Xi had in mind in the first place. I see China, North Korea and, Russia all aligned together to undermine the US in ways it hasn't had before. With other US leaders, it wasn't even possible to discuss nor consider. But thanks to Trump, the wannabee, it's now possible. Those three leaders are seemingly aloof with each other. on the surface. But together, placating Trump, they can find a way to get the US out of the China So Seas which they can control with impunity. And now Trump wants to antagonize another ally all three probably have, especially Russia, Iran. Maybe I'm just a cynic, but from where I stand, because of Trump's zeal to appease these leaders, he has no clue. None what so ever and they know it.

While we may think we are the most important nation on earth and the most powerful, might we not be so arrogant in assuming that everyone else is motivated by trying to curry our favor??? Perhaps they are simply building links to strengthen the links in the chain fence that we (meaning Trump) has built around his perceived empire. Instead of protecting us, trump has simply isolated us. Perhaps, had he studied history of other nations he would know that those who reigned from their mountaintop fortresses on the backs of the serfs below ultimately were destroyed by the weakness that is a byproduct of hubris.

That Xi is stopping off to see Kim before coming to see Trump is sending a bit of a message...but is there anyone in the administration that will get it?

Pay no heed to this visit. The little tyrant is like a spoiled child - come to think of it, according to a recent book - he was spoiled. A spoiled child craves attention and this is one sure way to get it. What China cannot undo are the tight or maximum sanctions it agreed to at UN Security Council - on it's own or with a visit. Thanks to sanctions - China cannot even bring any presents of a significant type. I have been to North Korea - and had never really believed in these talks that our POTUS champions. This rocket man and his coterie live in a Disneyland in a potemkin village of Peyongyang that they have created for their comforts. All the while, rest of the country toils to live an unbearable existence - where worse than hand to mouth is more the norm. Finally, this report does a disservice to itself of its serious contentby quoting aides to the 44th. Under his watch - Iran got the billions and North Korea got its missiles and nuclear bombs. So, we know where they are coming from.

By visiting North Korea, President Xi Jinping reminds us of a leader with a global vision, and an understanding of how to promote China's interests accordingly. This approach contrasts with Trump, who plays the insult and tariff barrier cards with reckless abandon to promote a domestic political agenda. As Xi understands and pursues the strategic interests of China, Trump Tweets.

“It signals that China has essentially given up on having a stable, mutually beneficial relationship with Trump.” As have many countries! In fact I would suggest that it is impossible to have “a stable, mutually beneficial relationship with Trump” as he is clearly mentally unstable and therefore nothing he says can be trusted.
West Coaster (Asia)
Remind me again why we trade with a CCP-led China. That's not insane because why?
batazoid (Cedartown,GA)
It's in President Xi Jinping's best interest not to appear too unfavorable to the American voting public, lest it appears it is trying to influence the 2020 elections towards the Democrats ...a move that would surely backfire and propel Trump into a second term.
Ralph braseth (Chicago)
The Chinese trade war is a trade war no more. Trump's "easy to win" war is now squishing through the cracks into other critical US-Chinese matters. America's strongest Pacific allies, Japan, Australia and South Korea are not amused.
Chris (Midwest)
Is a grand bargain nearing? Might be. Xi may be discussing with Kim a strategy of dangling a North Korea - US nuclear deal in front of Trump in order to get him to sign off on a softened trade deal with China. It's certainly a possibility.
Paul McGlasson (Athens, GA)
Mr. Xi is clearly seeking tips from Kim on the best ways of relating to Mr. Trump. Kim is obviously the world expert.
ondelette (San Jose)
Maybe President Xi and Supreme Leader Kim should invite Vladimir Putin to the meeting to discuss logistics. That way when Trump meets with President Xi, they can get the whole plan to subvert the 2020 elections done in one private meeting without having to hold risky meetings at Trump Tower next June.
Avi (Texas)
So Xi is trying to use Kim as the pawn, another photo op for Trump in exchange for a trade deal with China? Maybe not for any president with a remote sense of how things are working. With this one, it may as well work out great for China.
northeastsoccermum (northeast)
China can rebuild NK in a weekend. They have been investing around the world for years. That's why Trump's trade war won't win. It will hurt China in the short term but they play a very long game.
Chris McClure (Springfield)
Wouldn’t it just be so nice if Kim actually denuclearized and decided to open his country to the world. Just offer him and his comrades immunity. He’d win the Nobel peace prize. It’s so very important that this happens soon.
talesofgenji (NY)
US readers are ill informed about the PRC-N.Korean relationship No love is lost between the two. Since the Tang Dynasty China has treated Korea as tribute paying vassal, periodically invading it to enforce tribute and remove local emperors Only when China was at his lowest power, after the Opium Wars, did China, under foreign pressure , in 1895, recognize the independence of Korea. Just as Vietnam, N. Korea natural long term goal is balance Chinese power by playing it against the US . And, as Vietnam, with foreign investment become as wealthy as Vietnam From NPR, on the Visit of the USS Carl Vinson.: "MICHAEL SULLIVAN, BYLINE: And I'm Michael Sullivan in Da Nang, where 77-year-old Nuen Tin (ph) remembers the day the first U.S. combat troops arrived in Vietnam. In March 1965, he was there on the beach, watching, spying for the Viet Cong. He didn't like what he saw. NUEN TIN: (Speaking Vietnamese). SULLIVAN: As he watched, he says, he worried the Americans and all their weapons would make his people bleed for a long time. They did. But fast forward 53 years. And the two countries are now friends, Nuen says. And this time, he says... TIN: (Speaking Vietnamese). SULLIVAN: "The U.S. guns aren't pointed at Vietnam," he says. "They're pointed at our 1,000-year-old enemy - the thug, China." https://www.npr.org/2018/03/04/590670170/u-s-aircraft-carrier-visits-vietnam-for-the-first-time-since-the-war

@talesofgenji No love is lost between Mexico and the United States right now but it would be all "fire and fury" if the Chinese decided to bomb or invade Mexico. Maybe Trump would fix it by putting tariffs on invading armies, missiles, and falling bombs.
kimball (STHLM)
@talesofgenji It sems Vietnam has rehabilitated better than US from that war.
Mclean4 (Washington D.C.)
Is Korea still a colony of China like before the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1910? The relationship changed between China and Korea after WWII because US and USSR wanted to divide the control of Korea. China felt helpless after WWII but no choice but gave up the domination of Korea. But all Korean people still with Chinese family names. Kim, Lee, and Cha etc.
Steve Ell (Burlington, VT)
Two autocrats. Each far more cunning than trump. And they know - flattery will get you everywhere. Maybe trump’s advisors will do as the pentagon did - they won’t fully brief him on the matters to be discussed. On one hand, it is appalling that the president wasn’t briefed on the pentagon’s effort to engage in a cyberattack on Russia. On the other, it is difficult to question the judgement that trump can’t be trusted. Either way, while the New York Times is entitled to publish the fact, have the publishers undermined a covert operation?
kun (ny)
I am certain that Beijing demanded a price from Pyongyang for the visit — no provocations,” such as missile tests, Mr. Revere said It amazes me that the West continues to think this way— just as US has been friendly to murderous regimes to further a wider, deeper aim, can China not be doing the same? There is so much naivety in this article. Why in goodness name would China do Trumps bidding? They haven’t even said Xi will meet Trump. You continue listening to what you hope rather than facts so far.
Michael Tyndall (San Francisco)
Both Kim and Xi (and Putin) want the US out of the Far East. They see Trump as an opportunity and a temporary impediment. Our regional allies just hope we don’t sell them out, but they’re mostly on their own. Trump doesn’t even play checkers. He just plays the 24 hour news cycle as bad developments demand. Kim wants to monetize his nuclear investments. He’s playing the shakedown game. Xi has a real trade war on his hands and wants leverage over Trump. Given Kim’s dependence on China for sanction help, he’ll probably go along and make some minor concessions that Xi can offer Trump at the economic summit. The ‘beautiful’ Kim letter of last week was probably part of the set up. Xi doesn’t want to lose, but he has tremendous latitude in how he handles Trump. If China stops buying our treasuries, it will immediately drive up US interest rates. Xi can also put economic and even military pressure on our regional allies. Xi can even threaten the substantial investments many US companies have made in China. The US can adapt but there’d be great pain and uncertainty just ahead of the next election. If a trade war devolves into a full break with China, Xi can weather it with nationalism and a strong economic base. Trump might weather it with a lot of spin, but most Americans and business leaders will see him as inept and way out of his depth. And we’d still have a nuclear armed Kim causing trouble. He’s never giving up his nukes and will eventually demand a payday for good behavior.
Very Confused (Queens NY)
Mr Xi will be visiting Kim Jong-Un later this week They will be meeting in Pyongyang Relations between China and North Korea have been tense for decades. Mr Trump will be seeing Mr Xi in Osaka at the end of the month He will not be meeting with Kim Jong-Un. Mr Trump released the following statement earlier today: ‘ I’m looking forward to the end June. And also the end of Kim Jong-Un. Just kidding! Can’t wait to meet Mr Xi and hold some important discussions. I guess you could say I can’t wait to Xi him, but not Kim. Haha. I am so hilarious. Better than Obama’ ‘Finally, I’ve come up with the answer to the tension between China and North Korea. Ping-pong diplomacy! It’s worked before. A good game of ping-pong in Pyongyang and everything will be terrific! I’m such a genius, right?’ Requests for a response to the Presidents remarks from both China and North Korea have so far gone unanswered.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@Very Confused Trump went for the longest time thinking Pyongyang WAS the game played with little paddles ( that would fit Trump's tiny hands precisely), a little white hollow ball, and frighteningly enough, a net. Trump was never picked on the ping pong team in grade school.....why I'll never know......
Opinioned! (NYC)
Hahahahahaha! From the CIA to the president of China, it seems like everyone is keeping Donald “who knows we’ll see” Trump out of the loop. If this continues the First Lady/Third Wife might start swatting his tiny, tiny hands in public for the international press, the US military, and foreign dignitaries to see. Oh wait...
Hal (Illinois)
Trump is not meeting with these fellow sociopaths in the interest of America, he is building on his Trump hotel dynasty, golf courses and on and on. This CLOWN who is a full blown lifelong criminal needs to be brought to justice along with all other politicians who have sat on their hands instead of doing the right thing for America.
Agnate (Canada)
@Hal Trump actually said "North Korea has a great location and beaches" so I think he is just thinking about hotels. "North Korea, the president said, is “located between Russia and China on one side, and South Korea on the other. It’s all waterfront property. It’s a great location, as we used to say in the real estate business.”
Jacquie (Iowa)
Maybe Mr. Xi could write love letters to Trump like Kim Jon-un did so they too can fall in love.
Christy (WA)
I'm sure Xi and Kim will have a good laugh about how they're playing the stable genius in the White House -- and then send him very large, very nice, highly complimentary letters to assure him of their undying devotion and admiration for his astonishing brilliance in the conduct of foreign affairs.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@Christy Written in crayon, no doubt!!!
Nan Socolow (West Palm Beach, FL)
Looking forward to witnessing President Xi Jinping visiting North Korea this week, spending face-time with Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, his next door neighbor. Xi and Kim inherited the partition of the Korean peninsula from their leaders after China's Mao and Kim's Grandfather joined forces to fight against the US in the Korean War (June, 1950-53). The truce dividing the Korean peninsula into two countries was the enduring tragic consequence of that war. Looking forward, too, to seeing Trump's and Xi's meet and greet at the G20 in Osaka Japan after Xi spends time with young Kim,Trump's BFF bro. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been trying to mend fences in Iran between Trump and the Ayatollah and he'll be be busy hosting the G20 on 28/29 June. June is busting out all over. Meanwhile South Korea is now an Asian economic powerhouse. Unlikely that any of South Korea's miracles will rub off on the DPRK's desperate and starving millions of people. Human rights won't bring any joy to North Korea. What are the chances of a thrid meeting between Kim and Tariff Man? What are the chances of a summit somewhere between Trump and the Ayatollah? Hasn't the president gotten himself into a nest of vipers in the Middle East and the Far East and on our southern border with Mexico? In his ignorant and unfit fashion, isn't he launching his campaign for the 2020 presidency in Orlando, Florida tomorrow night?
Robert Bosch (Evansville)
I hope that China and North Korea stay friendly. North Korea could easily use nuclear bombs on China.
BrainThink (San Francisco, California)
And the Troll Of The Year award goes to President Xi of China for his starring role in the dramatic comedy “Intentionally Agitating Trump For Fun And Profit”. This is our world now. How sad.
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
@BrainThink Trump will dazzle them with gibberish about Pelosi, Biden, Schumer, collusion, J.Powell, Dem losers, Mexican rapists and some good Nazis... Kim and XI literally will NOT know how to respond to Trump, and FOX will get a Pulitzer for deciphering it all for the "base"...
xMAGA (Florida)
Mr. Xi's visit to North Korra will indirectly confirm that he will meet with Trump on the sideline of the G20 next week. But the focus will be on the nucpear issuies in North Korea rather than on trades. This arrangement and timing is slick. By circumenting talks on trades, China tryies to remind Trump there is more than trade in the Sino-US relationship. In addition, Xi may try to test Trump's sincerity for a trade deal and his willingness for a long haul in the current trade fight.
Mike Edwards (Providence, RI)
According to the MIT’s OEC project, North Korea exports $1.74b worth of goods each year; $1.58b go to China. NK imports $3.42b a year, of which $3.23b comes from China. If these figures are correct, then, regardless of visits, phone calls etc, NK is essentially a province of China. The way to forging any deal with NK has to be through China. I’m hoping for some progress when President Xi Jinping meets with President Trump. For better or worse, we’ll have the only two people in the room who can really reach an agreement about NK’s missile program.
Cemo (Honolulu)
Smart move to find some common ground with Trump where both would like some movement. Smarter still if being discussed and even coordinated w US ahead of time.
Susan (Paris)
Despite all his grandstanding, Trump has become a joke on the world stage -to be humored when necessary - at best. No one believes what he says, no one listens to what he says, and no one understands what he says. There isn’t a world leader out there who can’t run rings around him. - including of course Xi and Kim.
Garrett (Alaska)
You are right to criticize trump all you’d like.. but declaring that chairman Kim isn’t one of the stupidest, least educated, most isolated, most incompetent world leader (who else has to kill basically their entire extended family in the modern age to retain power) sounds like just the same tired anti-American propaganda . He’s 35 years old. He was appointed “supreme leader” at like 28. I think it’s a hard sell to say he and his ragtag group of in-distinguished advisors are more shrewd than Donald trump and his motley crew, regardless of your views on foreign policy
mja (LA, Calif)
@Garrett A potted plant is more shrewd than DJ Trump, so start with that . . .
Martin (Chicago)
Somewhere there must be a lost love letter that can straighten out this mess. Really, I don't know what that means, but then again does anyone have an idea what Trump is doing?
David (Gwent UK)
@Martin Definitely not Trump. Kim sent me a beautiful letter. A really beautiful letter, and let me tell you not many people know that. We are in Love and he respects me, as I do him and he, and his country is no nuclear threat as he told me so. The Irani leader will say nice things about me and I can bring the troops home. I am a great deal maker in my own mind.
felixmk (us citizen)
So our great deal-maker has struck out so Xi is going to help him? Meanwhile, we are trying to provoke Iran, but not start a war. Our other foreign policy initiative is to settle the Israel-Palestinian issue by giving Israel everything it wants. Oh, and we are supporting Brexit and thinking of slapping tariffs on our EU allies' cars even though our car manufacturers don't want tariffs. And the economic war with China is going full blast. It all makes sense....
Jim Dennis (Houston, Texas)
There simply isn't enough data here to make any conclusions. Xi is visiting, they will talk about something, and Xi will come back.
John (Syracuse N.Y.)
@Jim Dennis "China and North Korea have had a fraught relationship for decades, making Mr. Xi’s sudden visit, the first by a Chinese president in 14 years to the North, even more unforeseen." I'm just guessing that Xi is using this as leverage heading into the G20.
CarolinaJoe (NC)
Hmmm.. Xi meeting with Putin, and now with Kim. They surely try to gang up against Trump, who's almost 3 years of constant courtship to get any love from each of them, now looks like a dumb idea. Donald, they don't love you, they don't care about you, and they are not afraid of you.
Robert Bosch (Evansville)
So now that the collusion hysteria is over the liberal press believes that Putin and Trump are not buddies. Congressman Adam Schiff, please release the secret information you have that you have said many times shows Trump was in collusion with the Russians. Why are you still sitting on it?
Paul (Philadelphia, PA)
@Robert Bosch "believes that Putin and Trump are not buddies." Nobody ever believed that. It's a master-and-servant relationship. (Please don't ask who the master is and who the servant is—that would just be tiresome.)
Melvin Jackfert (Colorado)
Why don’t reporters bring up the execution of Kim’s negotiation team when trump says Kim is such a good guy.
Jack (East Coast)
As soon as Trump demanded that Xi appear at the upcoming summit under the threat of tariffs, all bets were off.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
North Korea exists because of China. China is unlikely to let the U.S. impose it’s will on North Korea, even to denuclearize that country. Trump does not really understand that.
Marty O'Toole (Los Angeles)
Xi is looking to shore up relations with the North Korea, so that if talks fail (or start to) with the U.S., he can align China closer to its neighbors (including Russia), in spite of Trump's tactics.
Panthiest (U.S.)
By doing this, Xi Jinping is telling Trump, "You come in second." Here we go.
RLW (Chicago)
Xi and Kim are next door neighbors. It is only natural that they should develop a neighborly relationship. Much like the U.S. and Mexico.... (just kidding, of course). Xi could help N. Korea develop a solid economy much as he has done in China. But will he be able to do so with the current medieval government? Certainly the phony romance between Kim and Trump is just that....the only question who will be hurt more by the revelation that both Kim and Trump see the other as gullible. But we in America all know who is the bigger fool.
fleetingthought (canada)
@RLW North Korea is way more than next door to X. It is China's grand agent in its confrontation with the United States and the West including South Korea and Japan. It has doggedly helped North Korea to complete its nuclear ICBM development through economic/military aid based on border trade even in the midst of international sanction. Let's not forget that China has been the only and sole sponsor to N.Korea, the most horrible totalitarian government the world has ever seen. With Xi's sudden visit to N.Korea, China is simply upping the intensity of its effort to use N. Korea as security threat to the US as its desperate move to fend off Trump's great containment strategy against China. I think this Xi's sudden visit to N.Korea ironically proves how much anxious and afraid China becomes facing Trump's pressure on it and shows that Trump's great trade war against China is working very well and beautifully, enervating China's economic strength in good measure, which reminds me of how Reagan started the wheel of the collapse of the Soviet Union through arms race and economic sanction. The latest development of people's street demonstration in Hong Kong seems to be just topping off this grand china containment strategy..

Xi, Kim, Putin, Trump. The new "Axis of Evil" in the world? Actually, the countries of China, N.Korea & Russia do all they can to push the boundaries decency & diplomacy to the brink of conflict while Trump does everything he can to toady up to each of them personally. Oh I know he's got "sanctions" on those countries, but they ignore them while at the same time militarily provoking the U.S. Trump wants to be "friends" with them and ignore the fact that they are adversaries. I'm sure Trump's feeble mind is thoroughly confused on what posture to take.
MoneyRules (New Jersey)
The Chinese never have and never will play fair in trade: 1. US companies in China must have local JV partner and turn over our blueprints and customer list 2. US citizens in China are imprisoned for failing to pay bribes, I mean "taxes." 3. Chinese "Police" can show up randomly and take away the servers and documents for US companies. How do I know? I lived in China and have personal experience with all 3.
Sandra S (Michigan)
And who may I ask forced these companies to go there and submit themselves to these outrages?
CarolinaJoe (NC)
@MoneyRules And yet corporations are clamoring to get to the Chinese market.
Demosthenes (Chicago)
Xi knows North Korean dictator Kim completely owns Trump so visiting him first makes perfect sense.
Michael J (Santa Barbara, CA)
So and Kim plotting against Donald ? Will he feelings be hurt ?
Ira Lechner (San Diego)
Xi and Kim certainly understand Trump's limitations. From Xi's perspective, China wants to make sure that millions of NK refugees do not flee over the river to China. From Kim's perspective, NK wants to make sure that China supports it economically if the U.S. increases sanctions on NK. These two countries thus depend on each other to avoid severe consequences imposed by Bolton/Pompeo hard line policy enhanced by Trump's irrationality which is based entirely on his evaluation of his own political survival. In short, don't read too much "change" into Xi's visit except that it signals China is not going to compel NK to surrender its nuclear weapons which leaves Trump "in love" with a myth who plays him with sophisticated flattery and laughs out loud together with Xi in private conversations.
Harry (Denver)
Xi Jinping is a man who thinks and plans ahead before he acts. So is Kim Jong-Un, in fact. On the opposing team is Trump and Bolton. This isn't going to end well for the United States.
Dan S. (Maine)
@Harry Xi's thinking before acting didn't seem to work out real well in Hong Kong last week. He has also had to backtrack on parts of his 'belt and road' initiative, as it has become apparent his aspirations are not so honorable as he makes them sound. It seems to me that he is the most impulsive, and least wise Chinese leader in a long time. Which, of course, makes him dangerous - like Trump.
Harry (Denver)
@Dan S. Dream on. Wishing it doesn't make it so.
Dan S. (Maine)
@Harry I lived in China recently, and have many Chinese friends. I follow what happens very closely. That's both their view, and mine. Other than consolidating power and making himself dictator-for-life, how many truly smart decisions has he made? The Chinese economy has slowed considerably, even by the reported numbers, which are inflated. Countries have woken up to the way China operates, and are taking measures to stop them. Xi is no Deng Xiaoping.
Donald (Ft Lauderdale)
I would not trust either of them. By them , I mean Trump and Kim.
J J Davies (San Ramon California)
Well, it makes sense to visit the more intelligent leader first.
Harry (Denver)
@J J Davies or for that matter, the one who actually is a leader. Trump may nominally be the president, but any intelligent person can see that US foreign policy is a sinking Titanic out of control with no captain at the wheel.
MIMA (Heartsny)
In Cahoots! Ganging up before the arrival of DJD! Hilarious.....
Ignatz (Upper Ruralia)
Uh Oh.....Looks like Kim is "cheating" on the Donald ... I wonder if Kim will send XI a "beautiful" letter professing his "wuv" for him? More likely, Kim is telling Xi : "Just smile and wave something shiny in front of Trump, and he will buy anything you tell him!!!! And don't worry about that ridiculous phoney stern face Trump is wearing these days when he visits foreign countries.....he's just mad that he has to take time out of his day to visit heads of state instead of tweeting nonsense gibberish, talking to Hannity (who's Hannity? An elected US official we don't know about? Strange...we don't take advice from reality radio clowns here in China and N. Korea!!) Just sit tight!!! Trump has to bring SOMETHING back to his "base"... who don't read or understand trade agreements anyway....." Xi and Kim head off to lunch, and have a good chuckle over how GULLIBLE Donald Trump, the Infant President, is. Over dessert, XI is heard to say: "Wait til Donny finds out we won't be making his hats and banners for his campaign any longer.....we'll wait til right before the election and then tell him to change his supply chain!!!! US veterans who support him will really 'wuv" wearing a MAGA hat made in Viet Nam!..... Reaching into his pocket, Xi pulls something out and winks at Kim and says "Think I can get him to put his tiny fingers into this?" XI chuckles as he hands Kim a "Chinese Finger Trap".

Imagine serving as umpire, between both the Stable Geniuses. Best wishes. Seriously.
Keith Dow (Folsom Ca)
We have only a year and a half of Trump left. Until then it is all theater.
Liz (Boise)
Extremely unlikely unfortunately. He will be re-elected. Californians and New Yorkers, come out of your bubbles.
mja (LA, Calif)
@Keith Dow Theater of the Absurd, to be exact.
Vivien Hessel (So cal)
What does that even mean?
