Esca’s Chef Buys the Restaurant He Opened With Mario Batali

I see Dave on Lidia's PBS TV program. He is always taking her fishing. This sounds like a win-win situation that removes the stain caused by Mario's lusty behavior. Dave gets back into a restaurant that customers enjoyed in the past Lidia and her son cut back a bit on the number of properties they own. Why work yourself to death for an incremental profit. Ray Kroc and Col. Sanders are the only restaurant billionaires and they are pushing up daisies.

In response to ManhattanWilliam, David Pasternack is not a typical "celebrity chef". He has always caught and purveyed his own fish, cooked in the kitchen and greeted his loyal customers in person. He is the personification of the "Joy of Cooking" and he loves his restaurant. The best seafood in town.

Dave Pasternak is a dedicated professional of the highest order. Before renovating, Mr. Pasternak should consider moving from the current location.

The sexual assault charges are alleged.

Numerous women have spoken out against Batali. Many of us in the business knew and were warned about him for years.

I've always enjoyed dining at Esca, and am gratified that opportunities to dine there will continue.

To a Non-newyorker this story and the earlier reports on this subject read like much ado about nothing. With all due respect to the tastes of the faithful regulars of ex-Batali eateries, I doubt that a level of truly haute cuisine can be maintained by the owners spreading themselves among so many outposts.

@Tuvw Xyz Nice to see you again Tuvw, Say hello to Mrs. Xyz. With regards to your comment about spreading ones self over too many places I kind of agree. However I prefer hot but good food over haute trendy cuisine many days of the week. BTW I had a good friend return to Florida after living in Evanston for 6 years. His wife died while making NWU a better school. So now I have no reason to visit Illinois.

They finally got rid of the crudi, I.e Messrs Batali and Bastianuch.

Why does the Bastianich's get a pass? They at worst were complicit and at best turned a blind eye to the whole situation!
Cork Dork (NYC)
They were busted twice for stealing their staffs hard earned tips. Shameful.

Was a time when restaurants meant good food and a competent chef in the kitchen. Now it's about celebrity, tarnished celebrity, corporations and chains of places that bear famous names which have nothing to do with what's being prepared in the kitchen. But make no mistake, as a native New Yorker I realize that there are STILL many of great restaurants in this city that have the owner cooking great food in the kitchen while members of the family host or bartend or such. If interested, I suggest looking for them because I'm selfish enough to not share these gems with the public at large. On the other hand, if the latest and greatest is what you desire, the pages of The Times and reviews by Pete Wells will satisfy all your cravings. But honestly, these celebrity places.....ugh.

I love Dave and this restaurant. Always fabulous.

Congratulations to Mr. Pasternak. Such a talented chef deserves his own restaurant.
