You Can Make a Treadmill From These Common Household Items (but Don’t)

It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Existence is my treadmill.

Maybe part of the appeal is that it is a bit crazy and dangerous. What could be more boring than running on a treadmill. That is why you always see people on treadmills listening to something or watching something - to keep it interesting. If you do what these folks are doing, with soap, all you need is a mirror. Maybe the same reason I do indoor cycling training on rollers. You are always perilously close to coming off the rollers, which can be catastrophic if you should happen to suddenly go forwards towards a tv rather than sideways toward whatever it is you are using to get started, which poses its own risks and challenges.

After just having read the article about starving college students, this further depresses. What the heck is going on here? Walk or run in place, but this?

No doubt this has received the enthusiastic endorsement of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

@Steve or the American Dental Association

HOLY CRAP!!!! My almost one year old hip replacement almost rolled over in it's socket after reading this! (a neighbor's unleashed dog came over and knocked me over, breaking the ball off the end of my leg bone and arm)(and they refuse to accept responsibility)

No thank you. I plan to expire on my front lawn from a bizarre gardening accident. With any luck it will be filmed for posterity.

What could possibly go wrong?

For many of us who also can't afford a gym membership, there is still the great outdoors, where you can run almost anywhere. If you're stuck indoors, just do the classic bodyweight exercises - pushups, pullups, planks, squats, lunges... There's safer ways of actually working out. But yes I do get that this is a joke (hopefully).

@James The YMCA is affordable and has every piece of equipment you could want plus a heated pool, sauna, steam room, classes.

@JBell The YMCA is affordable depending on where you live. I've lived in a few areas in the US and every time I look for a gym, the YMCA has not been the cheapest. This is as compared to big gyms like 24-hr. Fitness, LA Fitness, etc. which in some cases have better facilities. It may be helpful for people in certain categories like families with several young children or seniors but if you are a single person, it can be costly. For people who are Costco members, Costco has deals with gym memberships throughout the US. Another option is check out your local community center, which often have classes and/or equipment. For older people, check with your health insurance: many Medicare Advantage programs offer free gym membership via Silver Sneakers or Silver and Fit. Also, as commented before, the great outdoors: I used to run regularly outside, yes, even in rain and snow.

I don't see why these people just go outside and run. Watching these videos is like plumbing humanity's new depths

@Geoffrey It is a concept known as a "joke". People do something unpractical or silly because they find it funny. If these are the people you are worried about, you do not want to hear what is happening in the government.

This would be comical, if it wasn't so dangerous.
