Well, from what I can tell from a few comments, the artwork perfectly represents her: It's controversial and can't be ignored.

what a terrible trite work of art that'll be. looks like something fit for a mall.

I’m happy that Shirley Chisholm is being commemorated but I find the design extremely large, loud, gaudy and quite frankly, unattractive. I’m afraid it will receive more attention for it’s ugliness than in remembrance of a trailblazer.

Pretty gaudy. Can almost believe Donald Trump designed it. I remember Shirley Chisholm: a champion and a lady. This memorial, not.

How can we find out when the dedication will be?

Why? Why are we still erecting monuments when we don't know how to interpret the ones we already have?
Caroline (Brooklyn)
@x Because there is a serious gap in representation in our public landscape that deserves as much attention as re-evaluating older representations. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

This is a perfect start to a new era of representative monuments in this city. It's not just a small, figurative picture of a woman. This is a grant monument that stretches out it's physical impact (in shadow!) far outside of it's physical space. I can't think of any better way to represent Shirley Chisholm.

The monument (I thought it was going to be a statue) seems out of scale with its surroundings and rather gaudy and overwhelming, like something one would see in front of a Las Vegas hotel. It doe not remotely fit my memory of Ms. Chisholm, though of course others may disagree. Ms. Chisholm is long gone so I am sure passersby will wonder who the subject is and why she is being commemorated; I hope there will be a plaque (or better yet a video screen) that attempts to convey what Ms. Chisholm’s role was and the many reasons she deserves commemoration. I also hope the City will allocate ample funds to secure and maintain the monument—it is likely to be a target for graffiti vandals.
Hooray for Miss C! (New York, NY)
This is beautiful and innovative and inspiring! I cannot wait to see it in person. There is nothing wrong with statues taking on different forms. I think Shirley Chisholm (or "Miss C" as the young people on her team used to call her) would be proud and honored to have such a bold interpretation to represent her--particularly because she herself was bold and different and loved to challenge the status quo. I hope this is just one of MANY statues in her honor that get built in the near future!

The picture atop this article appears to conflict with the description in the text- where is the statue of her? All I see is- gaudy overkill. It does a disservice to a basic, down-to-earth, tell it like it is, woman. I remember her, and her candidacy for president. Gutsy, determined.

It's innovative, original and beautiful. It's location is perfect and doesn't hurt the Prospect Park in any way. Congratulations to the artists. Shirley Chisholm deserves to be honored. But the subversive part of me also wishes this sculpture was right in front of the entrance to the Capitol, where the current congressman would see it and couldn't avoid it. Every day.
