After Social Media Bans, Militant Groups Found Ways to Remain

Well, well, well. Hamas and Hezbollah are clever. But let's expose their lies the same way. Mamdouh Al-Harbi, a Saudi cleric, posted a video to his YouTube channel in July 2017 in which he clarifies that the real fight is against Jews, not “Zionists,” painting a very different picture. In July 2017 Sheikh Al-Harbi clarified in his lecture, titled “Who Will Liberate Al-Aqsa,” that Islamic texts require a genocide of all Jews, not just Zionist Jews. He said, "Anyone who claims that our war is with Zionists rather than Jews is mistaken." Watch his speech on YouTube at: https://www.memri.org/tv/saudi-cleric-muslim-war-with-jews-not-just-zionists The Palestinian leadership–both Hamas and Fatah as well as its people–and ISIS and other Arabs are mesmerized by what Thomas Mann's friend (who lived in  Nazi Germany) called the "sorcery of violence.” Those in Nazi Germany lost their souls. It happened in Gaza and the West Bank. It is now happening with Israeli-Palestinian terrorists. These are UNRWA schools that teach anti-Semitism—not just anti-Zionism, Watch the propaganda in kindergartens and interviews of Palestinian students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnLIzNGb9gI https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=palestinians+teaching+anti-semitim Become enlightened.

Simple solution. Ban any group or organization deemed as "terrorist" from any use of the internet whatsoever. Would we give voice to a Nazi group? Why would we allow terrorist groups or organizations a vehicle to propagate their "benign" or surely their hateful propaganda? We would be aiding and abetting such terrorist goups.

Censorship is a serious threat to our rights. I want to be able to read and see whatever I like. I don't want the government to decide what I read or think. They say "terrorists" but how soon people forget that Nelson Mandela was officially designated a "terrorist" as was the ANC. Malcolm X was called a terrorist, as was Martin Luther King. Sinn Fein, the current government party if Northern Ireland was officially designated as "terrorist." While I have no sympathy for the Hamas or Hizbollah, I may be interested in how they think and try to influence others. I have read Mein Kampf in order to better understand and fight fascism. The US has designated the most widely supported Kurdish organization as terrorist. I disagree. It is very noticeable that the campaign for more censorship is being led by Liberals today--always in the name of worthy causes. That is cynical and a very dangerous trap, aimed at curtailing our ability to learn and fight for our rights.

farcebook only cares about farcebook* Twitter only cares about Twitter. YouTube only cares about YouTube. There is no reason for any of them to exist in the first place. Ditto for Instagram. On the other hand, "social media" doesn't kill people. People kill people. Since the dawn of time. Without the internet, or cell phones, or electricity. Free speech vs. terrorism. I don't think either side will ever win. (*not a typo...that's how I spell it..are people still using it?...pretty lame way to get recruits)

An American terrorist organization called the "United Constitutional Patriots" is featured in another article in today's NYT. It's not just foreign terrorist groups that should be excluded, it's our own home-grown ones as well, even if they enjoy the tacit support of our current President.

That's right.. regulate the internet because some groups may be offended by what they read .. That is so ridiculous! That's like being afraid of looking at a calendar- The worst thing it can do is tell the date.
William Smith (United States)
@Aaron Calendars should be regulated

A better way to fight terrorism is to solve the economic and political problems which allow ground for terrorist organizations to spread and recruit.

I think Fox State TV (the KGB News Network) and the NRA should be added to the list as domestic terrorism organizations.

I used to say only two types of people use social media; politicians and idiots. Now, its terrorists, politicians and idiots.

Hamas & Hezbollah? A quick browse around Twitter & YouTube comments and it's not hard to see we have a bigger problem on our hands. Racism and white supremacy are rampant on social media to the point of becoming normalized, despite the stated efforts by big tech. You don't have to look too deep on any of these sites before seeing actual avowed neo-fascists emerge in the comment sections, and it has already been established that recent massacres like the one in New Zealand have been committed by men involved with these online communities and who are literate in cryptofascist "memes" & propaganda. I mean, just look at the replies to any of President Trump's tweets and you'll find all sorts of hateful rhetoric by even his "moderate" supporters. But sure, let's worry about Hamas & Hezbollah while our own extremists are organizing right before our eyes in broad daylight. Good luck to us all.

And yet "social media" not only allows "domestic terrorist" (that Homeland has been unable to keep up with in the last 10 years) to not only remain on their sites but now consult with them for "fact checking" (see Facebook) as well as taking down followers that they target and troll. The "owners" of the social media sites are not only controlling the information they are formating the story to their political beliefs. We have more to fear from our "internal" enemies than our "external" enemies. Think about it

Why does anybody feel the need to belong to facebook or twitter or any “social media” propaganda outlet?
Lisa (Oregon)
@George exactly. I always have said there are two types of people on social media; idiots and politicians. I guess I was wrong. It is idiots, politicians and terrorists.

More worrIsome than Hamas and Hezbollah - both legitimate political organizations for many people—is letting Israel censor what is allowed in public forums. Of course, calls to violence should be banned and deleted. But if speeches by Nasrallah who it can be argued -is a legitimate political leader in Lebanon —than most certainly speeches by Netanyahu -who also incites fear in his speeches -should also be banned.

Individuals and sovereign governments need to take some responsibility for what their citizens look at. Our telcos have free software to stop violent and malicious content as well as pornography and to stop it automatically downloading on your computer. Parents need to make sure their kids have limited access to what they can view on the computer by getting programmes that filter out violent and dark web content. Lots of parents won't be aware of what their kids are looking at on the computer because they're of the generation that probably were not born when computers were invented. Especially grandparents. Maybe media, that is the interface between awareness for individuals and the computer, can provide a pathway to what programmes are available to BLOCK out violent and harmful content on the internet. The Christchurch Australian terrorist used to spend all of his childhood and youth on computers unsupervised, going to all those violent sites etc. Kids don't know the difference between propaganda and fake accounts and reality as their minds are still growing. That's why they need responsible, adult, supervision up to the age of 14.

Congratulations. Censorship is leading to a sanitized version of reality that hides a group or person's true intentions and ideas. This allows them to attract new recruits without any condemnation or fear and results in the growth of silent dissent that is not allowed to express itself in words, but only action.

"Israel called the campaign Operation Broken Heart. It showed, Israeli officials said, how dangerous it was to allow militant organizations to use social media." And how dangerous it is to allow Israeli soldiers to use social media. Surely social media and other internet/computer savvy is part of military training.

Facebook and the other social media firms are private businesses. They set their own rules. They can ban whomever they want for whatever reason. As such, I'd ban these terrorist groups from posting anything, hostile, innocuous or whatever. They are terrorists. Everything they post, even the seemingly innocent posts, has behind it the motive of fostering their terrorist goals. Ban them!

Isn’t Facebook great. That Zuckerberg is a genius. Actually anyone with a 3rd grade education would have know it would be a digital sewer.
Jay David (NM)
People like Mark Zuckerberg make billions serving Putin, Trump and the terrorists.
Jean-Paul Marat (Mid-West)
Why shouldn’t Hamas and Hezbollah or supporters be able to publish their stuff on Twitter and Facebook when the IDF post stuff all the time and Israel’s Security Apparatus uses their Hasbara network to attack even the most mundane criticism of the State of Israel.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
@Jean-Paul Marat Because they are terrorists and killers.
Charlie (New York)
@A. Stanton So is the IDF, what's your point?
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Ah Charlle, I knew that someone was going to say some nonsense in response to my comment, and it had to be you. But let me try again. My point is that one side has been trying to destroy the other by killing and terrorism for more than 70 years, while the other has stood ready for peace for more 70 years and still is.

If the propaganda published by these terrorist groups were not disseminated, it would not be a worthwhile effort for them. The big problem is not so much identifying such material and removing it, a difficult task unrelated to the business of so-called Social Media. The problem is the very business model of social media that is focused, not on providing a service to users, but upon collecting dollars for clicks. More clicks, more dollars. Value, accuracy, ramifications, anything other than clicks ...
