Demands for Adam Schiff’s Head Highlight Chasm That Only Widened With Mueller’s Conclusion

Adam Schiff's speech yesterday was PERFECT. Absolutely on point. Thank God someone in government still cares about this country instead of protecting a wannabe dictator. Talk about brave and on the right side of history- Schiff is a hero and I generally do not use that term because it has lost its meaning in today's America.

The only thing that will shut down the hysteria and hate coming from the Left will be the morning raids, the perp walks, and the indictments coming down. Then they’ll start turning on each other—Strzok, McNabe, Brennan, Clapper, Comey, all the way up the hierarchy. I don’t think the Democratic Party will survive it.
Edward (Honolulu)
FRCP Section 6.e. prohibits evidence on an unindicted person from being disclosed. If you don’t indict you can’t be throwing shade. It’s a basic tenet of the rule of law. Sorry, Dems. Justice is not a rummage bag for you to pick through.
kenneth (nyc)
"fuming that Mr. Schiff would not accept Attorney General William P. Barr’s word that Mr. Mueller had not found the Trump campaign to have taken part in a conspiracy to undermine the election." Gee, guys, we told you we're honest and fair. So why would you be so mean as to question that?"
Barbara (SC)
Republican kettles call the Democratic pot dirty.
sloreader (CA)
If Trump and his allies are so convinced Mr. Mueller's report exonerates them, why the intense huffing, puffing and hand-wringing over its release? If their conclusion is accurate, why not insist upon its immediate release? If correct, release of the report could turn an abbreviated victory lap into a ball spiking touchdown dance. Which you know they would love, if they were not terrified by the truth.
vashti (colesville)
I wanted to stand up and clap. That speech was on point Mr. Schiff. Mic drop... I really appreciated someone speaking truth, especially next to that sniveling imbecile mr nunes. No backbone. If he is so innocent, release the report. .
Joe (Seattle)
..."whose doughy-faced demeanor hardly evokes an attack dog..."??? Am I the only reader who noticed that odd, slightly-insulting phrase? It's one thing to say more Labradoodle than Doberman, but that was completely unnecessary. I'm proud of Adam Schiff. He is truly serving our country while DJT continues to lie and cheat his way through the presidency.
DataDrivenFP (California)
How many Republicans have knowingly taken Russian money, besides Mr. Trump? We know at least a dozen Republican Senators are beholden to Russia, either from blackmail material or money laundered through the NRA. How many lying Republicans in the House are hopelessly compromised by Russia? After we finish investigating Trump (a hole that has no bottom) we can start on Senators, Congressmen and Federal judges appointed by the Russians. There's a lot of swamp to drain here!
Michael FREMER (Wyckoff NJ)
This was a bizarrely written story with an odd emphasis on the Republican demands for Schiff's resignation instead of on the real story here, which is Schiff's powerful retort using only established FACTS that should make every American uncomfortable. But the reporter buries it. The headline buries it, the tag on the video buries it. The STORY, the part that will be historic once we do see the Mueller report, was Schiff's smart and powerful recitation of the FACTS not the 9 cowed Republicans' demand. No wonder there are comments from Trump apologists still aiming nonsense at Schiff! Adam Schiff is the Chairman. He did not play "defense" as the story makes it appear. Anyone who watched the hearings knows that. Watching the extremely uncomfortable Michael Conaway (R-Texas) read the prepared statement with a metaphorical Trump gun to his head on behalf of the other 8 Republicans on the committee was very telling. Then Schiff unloaded in what was a powerful statement of FACTS. The reporter needs to return to school IMO.
Gloria Ross (St. Louis)
@Michael FREMER Thank you for this comment. I, too, thought the headline particularly took the wrong focus. I thought it should have been more like "Adam Schiff Takedown of Republicans Leaves Them Stunned."
William (Minnesota)
Yes we are edging ever closer towards the militancy of the right, takeover of our democracy. The old phrase “ might makes right” never had as much poignancy as it does with the trump regime. Someone should do a painting called last stand at mar a lago. As a parody of the Alamo. Trump and McConnell and the Koch brothers with Murdoch, Bannon and all those other threatened white puppet masters of the universe. Honey! Get me the number for the Harvard lampoon
D (Btown)
If you look at the NYT picks they are always for the Left view point, what an echo chamber. The Press has lost all objectivity and therefore credibility, it is a sad day for our great nation
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
Myth #1 : The "Left HAS to apologize." Only if you're sloshed on vodka and high on crack. Sober people realize that when a sitting president calls on another nation to hack his opponent's emails and announces on national TV that he fired the top-ranking FBI agent because of the "Rusher thing" the only responsible response is an investigation. Myth #2: The press was irresponsible. See #1 for why it was imperative to cover this story. All press coverage from the onset of the profession has involved speculation. This story dominated the press because the president daily sounded off in ways that put on the table all of the pieces under examination. If he didn't want to be investigated on collusion and obstruction, perhaps he should have rethought what he tweeted and ranted about. Myth #3: "Everyone" was waiting for the Mueller report and we now all have sour grapes because it did not confirm our bias. "Everyone" did not. Many of us have repeatedly said that we didn't need and shouldn't wait for the report. I have said it daily for two years and in dozens of letters here, but so did many other pundits and journalists. He should be removed on Article 25 grounds. Myth#4: The Barr report is the Mueller report. No. It's. Not. Myth #5: There's no "there there." Except that Mueller's team indicted or got guilty pleas from 34 people and 3 companies during the discovery phase which has now been cut short. Bust the myths so we can reenter the real word and restore it to order.
joymars (Provence)
When will the Times publish the entire 300 pages?
Blackmamba (Il)
That all of the Republicans on this committee including the lone Negro Republican in the House Will Hurd -an ex-CIA agent from Texas -got on the Devin Nunes and Kevin McCarthy clown car letter asking for Adam Schiff's resignation must have put a really big smile on the smirking face of former KGB operative and FSB head and Czar wannabe Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
Laura Magzis (Concord, NH)
I am behind Mr. Schiff. However, I am NOT behind whoever wrote the headline for this article. This was NOT Mueller's report. It was Mr. Barr's opinion on the Mueller report. Along with many others,I want the report made public.
Richard Bradley (UK)
How has the gop become such a sordid grubby little party? Defacing every institution of America that was once good with endless lies and corruption.
Dave (WA)
This was Adam Schiff's " at long last sir, have you left no sense of decency?" moment. Give 'em hell Cogressman!
Tom (Oxford)
Do we believe it wouldn't come to this? Of course, we knew the Republicans would do this. They are now Trump's party. It is a party that wants power for the sheer sake of power - country be damned. By hook or by crook they are taking this country away from us. The Democrats must hang firm. Schiff must stay. Democrats need to be vocal in their defense of him. Don't be just defensive. Come at them. Go on the counter. A majority of America supports you. In your hands are healthcare, the environment and education. We need you to be strong!
GMoore (USA)
The Democrats have a target named Trump, and the GOP thought they, also, should have a target, so they chose Schiff, who, by the way, wrote an extremely compelling letter explaining why Republicans should not forfeit their power of the purse over Trump's "wall" funding. I think the GOP has erred here. In their "letter" about Schiff, they sealed their allegiance to Trump and their fate as a failed political party. And BTW, they also helped raise Schiff's profile as a patriotic American. I really would like the Democrats to nominate Schiff for president. I'm a staunch Conservative and I would have absolutely no problem voting for him. What's more, in a battle between Schiff and the half-wit Trump, Schiff would win in a walk. The Trump GOP corruption goes only so far.
Tom Q (Minneapolis, MN)
In college, I was told that reading Cliff Notes was no substitute for reading the entire book. I make the same recommendation to the outraged GOP members in Congress. The president has said that the report completely exonerates him. He also said there were caravans headed to the US full of terrorists, that the GOP had a great plan for health care coverage, that he never authorized payments to Stormy Daniels and over 9,000 other lies. Until we have the full report, the president and his sycophants should stop claiming complete exoneration. If anything, the Barr summary raises more questions than delivers answers.
LAM (Westfield, NJ)
I say Adam Schiff for president. Yesterday he drew the distinction between an indictable offense and publicly known information that points to collusion and obstruction. He did a magnificent job. In my eyes, he is a hero and his speech should go down in history. It is absolutely essential that we see The Mueller report in its entirety.
Edward (Honolulu)
Why wasn’t he making that distinction before? He was sailing the ship of Russian collusion, but it sank.
brownpelican28 (Angleton, Texas)
With the completion of the 300 page Mueller Report and the Barr response, the Republican Leadership and Don Trump have additional furtile ground o continue to polarize this nation as the full truth about the Trump Presidency continues to evade exposure. Let one hope that the full Mueller Report is made available to the American voters before the 2020 Presidential Election. Let one also hope that at the conclusion of the 2020 Prrsidential Election that Trump’s new permanent residence is Mar A Largo, and not 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!
brownpelican28 (Angleton, Texas)
Who prompted William P. Barr write that supposedly unsolicited treaties on collision and send it to the White House for Trump to read. All of a sudden Barr was confirmed as Attorney General. Interestingly, Barr’s short review of Mueller’s 300 page report states that Murller’s report lacked sufficient evidentuary Facts to establish a legal finding or basis of collusion. The timing of Barr’s unsolicited report to Don Trump and its legal impact make ironic, yet astounding legal history!
Zoned (NC)
Once again the Republican screaming machine is trying to determine the Democrat agenda. There is no reason Schiff should step down. Americans need see the full Mueller report and the House needs to investigates on their own, especially after the Nunes alleged fiasco. The Republicans need to concentrate on working for the people of this country rather than trying to deflect with ridiculous arguments like McCarthyism. They spend more of their time figuring out phrases and attacks that try to get people's ire up than doing the people's business. Keep it up Ms Pelosi. Don't let them hoodwink the public with their games.
Cmary (Chicago)
Looking at Trump’s insults at the Trump rallies—the latest target being Adam Schiff—I can’t help but look at the smiling, laughing attendees with disgust. I come from a small Michigan town and I could recognize many in the audience as not unlike the adults I grew up with. My memories of them are that of being largely decent people, teaching their children principals of fairness and kindness on the little league fields and in the classrooms of the day. That’s why I do not recognize how many of them have surrendered their sense of decency to the Cult of Trump—laughing at Trump’s bullying, his using the taunts of a middle school lunchroom to describe his political enemies, his obvious lies about providing good health care, his cover-ups about colluding with foreign adversaries for personal financial gain. Its disturbing to see their joining in on the cruel jokes, snide remarks, and obvious duplicity. They are attractive American faces with unattractive values systems—values I no longer recognize and for which I no longer have respect.
Jim (NY)
Need to stop calling it Mueller's conclusion. It is Barr's stated conclusion after maybe, or maybe not, reading the entire Mueller report
Lawrence (San Francisco)
A demand for the “full” Mueller report must be political. Grand jury material is undisclosable and for good reason. Also, there will be the names and personal details of of innocent people and law enforcement agents"
Brooke (Lake Tahoe)
"Once more, into the fray" , I'll be saying that to you again and again Adam Schiff , until this infected sore on our Republic is lanced. You are the essence of the "physician" required. Calm and economic of drama on the surface, but deeply galvanized to do a moral lancing on behalf of the moral arc of history. In gratitude-
Edward (Honolulu)
Readers may rant and rave, but the end of the Mueller probe has already increased Trump’s stature throughout the world. China is already making new concessions on trade because they know Trump has been validated, and they will be dealing with him for years. People were dancing and cheering in Moscow. I know that to some it’s a sign of Russian collusion but, as Trump publicly and unobstructively said, “There’s nothing wrong with talking with Russia.” Domestically, he had some good news with the latest economic report. Income up, inflation down. In Congress calls for Schiff’s resignation prove all the Democrats’ plans have backfired and Trump is riding the wave. Ding. Dong. Russian collusion is dead.
Susan S. (New York, NY)
I take exception to the Times' characterization of the procedings yesterday in the House Intelligence Committee as going 'downhill' after Representative McCarthy called for Adam Schiff's resignation. On the contrary, I felt Rep. Schiff's list of the behaviors of our President, revealed by unimpeachable sources or obvious for all to see and hear, is needed. President Trump is clearly a liar and a fraud. These qualities may not be criminal, but they certainly make him unfit to be president, and we need those in our government to remind us of them until the last polling place has closed in November, 2020.
ss (los gatos)
Mr. Schiff has always seemed to me clear-headed and reasonable and a welcome contrast to Mr. Nunes' nonsense. What's in the Republican Kool-aid?
Mike (Somewhere In Idaho)
Once again the Democratic "we hate Trump" idea ignites the passions of those who will apparently go down in flames rather than at least give us a moment of respite from the political drumbeat. Give it a break. You can still look at the Russians but do our business first. Please
Dady (Wyoming)
I recall vividly Harry Reid lying on the senate floor about Mitt Romney not paying taxes. This paper never questioned his motives or sought “evidence”. Now we have Schiff. Given a total pass.
Danielle Davidson (Canada and USA)
Keep Schiff. I'll take a second helping of Trump come 2020. I find it amusing all the pro Schiff comments. He lied and continues to lie and you applaud. ok. It will be a 2016 repeat and you will act surprised.
Frank Roseavelt (New Jersey)
DAY 7 OF THE BARR COVER-UP.....and the NY Times is writing stories about right-wing attacks on Congressman Schiff? They've got to be laughing in the White House...who knew it would be so easy to kill the Mueller Report? - just say there's nothing there without releasing the report. How can the NY Times be falling for this?
James (US)
@Frank Roseavelt Releasing the full report won't change the fact that Mueller cleared the Trump campaign of collusion. Trump won and Hillary lost.
hally (paris, france)
perhaps it's time to play like the republikans and claim anti-semitism on any rebuke of Schiff. dems need to play with much less politesse and a bit more panache as currently used by AOC.
Zack Browne (New York)
Just look at the headline of this article: "Demands for Adam Schiff's Head...". Why is NYT amplifying GOP nonsense? The same NYT was responsible for for not giving Bernie exposure run in 2016, treating him as if he didn't even exist. Trump was always in front of our eyes in the NYT. It is publications like NYT that are responsible for Trump's rise. Who cares that Republicans are demanding Schiff's head? This is NYT amplifying something that should be maybe buried somewhere on page 10. NYT is helping the GOP noise machine malign someone who is a straight shooter.Obviously Republicans and Trump are afraid of him, that's the reason they're trying to get rid of him.
EW (Glen Cove, NY)
How do old school Republicans stand by and watch their party devolve into this rioting mob?

The GOP, now sponsored by Kleenex!

Nancy Pelosi is awesome!
F In Arlington (DFW)
The NY Times, once again attempting to play nicely with lying and hypocritical “Republican” stooges. The title of this article should be, “Republicans on the attack at sign of small victory, accuse Democrats of using Republican tactics.”
Luciano (New York City)
If, say, David Nunes were to accuse President Hillary Clinton of collusion and announce that he had evidence of such collusion and then an investigation proved there was no collusion the Democrats would be demanding his resignation and the NYT would be filled with editorials and op-eds demanding the same
GEO (New York City)
@Luciano. Plausible but we have seen NO evidence that proves there was no collusion between the trump camp and Russia. All we have up to now is the “word” of trump toady, appointee and acolyte Bill Barr.
ben220 (brooklyn)
Except that is not what happened, and the parallel itself is flawed. This is a childish mode of argument.
Earthling (Earth)
How dare they. If anyone needs to resign it’s obstructive parrty-first hacks like Jordan, Meadows, Nunes and McCarthy. They and their vile ilk sully the halls of Congress every day.
eric blair (usa)
Schiff is the Joe McCarthy of his day railing about collusion but with no proof. A shame because papers like the Times use to go after these ambitious frauds but amazingly in this case the Times enabled him. Just another indication of the collapse of honest media in America.
Chuckles (NJ)
Sen. McCarthy was punching down, with almost no evidence, to impugn the patriotism of rank and file government and military employees, and to imperil their jobs. Schiff is investigating “the most powerful man in the world”, who not only has the vast resources of the executive branch to defend and protect him, he also has mythical billions which if he wanted to, could be put to use to hire legions of lawyers & PR people and buy more advertising than all the networks could air. That he chooses to defend himself mostly at partisan rallies (travel and expenses paid for by us taxpayers), helipad press scrums and Twitter should give you a hint as to how offensive he thinks the representative’s accusations are.
GEO (New York City)
@eric blair. Right! A barrel full of indictments, confessions and prison sentences sure cements that idea - that there was no collusion. Pfui!
BiggieTall (NC)
It’s not okay.
Doctor B (White Plains, NY)
Adam Schiff for President!
Carol Ring (Chicago)
Trump has a distorted view of what constitutes Russian collusion. He refused to be questioned because even his lawyers feared he would incriminate himself. Mr. Schiff posed a number of realistic questions that have to be answered. When is our president going to begin acting with some modem of decency? He once again called Elizabeth Warren "Pocahontas", asserting her campaign has sputtered from the start because of his criticisms. He called House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.)“pencil neck”. Trump declares: “We are fighting and working and winning.” “We are making America great.”...“Everyone is benefiting,”. “Now I’ve done more than I ever promised I’d ever do so the [presidential] debates should be easy.” Democrats, he said, are “extreme,” “socialist” and “sick people.” There are patterns of wrongdoings by Trump, his businesses and his administration. The truth must be found. Our Democracy is at stake from this sick narcissist.
James (US)
@Carol Ring Releasing the full report won't change the fact that Mueller cleared the Trump campaign of collusion. Trump won and Hillary lost.
Lorraine Buttner (Republic Of Korea)
Schiff for President!
Ralph Petrillo (Nyc)
There is a real choice in every election. The Republicans seem almost idiotic as they want no environmental regulation, low taxes for the wealthy and corporations, and make decisions without seeing a report. No one still trusts Trump and his family. Whst a surprise that the white Christian south would support a president thst adores dictators. The deficit is soaring . They almost seem pathetic. Ona note of optimism . We won the civil war and the US public will win after all is released about the racist Republicans. Anyone still supporting Trump is nuts.
Jefflz (San Francisco)
The hypocrisy of the democracy-destroying Republican sycophants who see Trump as their lord and master, is appalling beyond belief. They spent millions and millions crucifying Hillary over email server rules and are furious because Schiff made the logical conclusion that Trump is linked to Russia because Trump has been bailed out by Russian mafia money and was elected in large measure by Russian interference in the 2016 election. Republicans are dragging our country down into a Trumpian abyss- Vote them all out of office ASAP!!
Richard (Palm City)
It is ironic that Trump with his little hands says that Schiff has a little neck.
MissMollyOGolly (New York, NY)
The entire GetOverParty does not seem to have a handle on the reality of the American political landscape. They have failed time and again to do the work they were elected to do. What has become de rigeur for this administration is wholesale fraud and corruption at the expense of the American taxpayer. They have not been working to promote the agenda of mainstream America and have been lining their pockets with ill gotten gains. It is time to vote them OUT of office in 2020 and keep them accountable for debasing our country with their despicable sycophantism. They do NOT represent us.
Michael Culshaw (Sydney)
If you go for the Schiff, you better not miss, Republicans...
estelle mazur (new jersey)
Bravo, Mr Schiff !
Ed (Washington DC)
Chairman Schiff noted yesterday many questions about Trump’s ties to Russia remain unanswered. “You might say that’s all okay....But I don’t think it’s okay. I think it’s immoral, I think it’s unethical, I think it’s unpatriotic, and yes, I think it’s corrupt and evidence of collusion.” Schiff concluded. What stuff did Schiff question? Among other things: • Kushner, Manafort and Trump Jr.’s Trump Tower meeting with Kremlin-tied Russians to discuss dirt on Hillary Clinton...with Pres. Trump agreeing that's why they met. • Manafort’s convictions of various crimes after he lied to DOJ about his relationship with Konstantin Kilimnik, a bloke tied to Russian intelligence. • Trump’s request to Russia to hack Clinton campaign emails, followed by Russian intelligence hack of Clinton campaign emails and their release through WikiLeaks, followed by Trump campaign discussion of the Clinton dirt with Russian Twitter account Guccifer 2.0. • Kushner and Russia’s Kislyak discussion to create secret communication back channels between Moscow and Trump’s transition team so they could discuss policy issues. • Trump’s former national security adviser Flynn’s lies to the FBI about discussions with Russia’s ambassador on lifting Russia sanctions. • Trump’s lies surrounding his billion-dollar Moscow construction project. • Trump’s attorney Cohen's lies to the House Intelligence Committee last year. Hang in there Chairman Schiff; the strong majority of Americans are behind you 100%.
joymars (Provence)
Why is the Times burying Rep. Schiff’s crucially needed position within the GOP’s search and destroy strategy instead of focusing on it as an above-the-fold life-or-death on-going political drama, which it is?
NN (theUSA)
Republican House majority leader Kevin McCarthy: "There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump". Google it.
Jim Smith (Dallas)
Adam Schiff has been lying to the American people for two years about having direct evidence of Trump colluding with Russia to steal the election - Robert Mueller and the FBI have investigated this allegation for almost three years with 2,800 subpoenas and 500 witnesses and found not a shred of evidence of collusion - Schiff is the Joseph McCarthy of today
ss (los gatos)
@Jim Smith But Mueller's charge was to investigate Russian interference in the election, and there is plenty of evidence for that and for the involvement of people around Trump. Perhaps the President is the lotus rising unsullied from the muck in which he grows; but even then the Barr summary indicates that there is more than a shred of evidence that he obstructed justice--just not enough to convict. In the end it seems like money well spent, if we don't want to be led blindly to slaughter by the Russians.
LAM (Westfield, NJ)

These republicans are buffoonish just like their dear leader, Trump ! Thank you, Mr Schiff for being a true patriot.

This vindictiveness is truly annoying. Has anyone called for Trump's resignation because his Obama birth certificate witch hunt turned up ZERO? Vindictiveness, the diametric opposite to magnanimity, seems the hallmark of Trump's minions. Such little people!!
Stu (Sin City)
If Trump is so innocent release the full Mueller Report. Now!
Jimbo (New Hampshire)
Republican hypocrisy may always be counted for an instructive (if less than amusing) sideshow when matters are not going as they wish them to go. To his infinite credit, Mr. Schiff seems to be entirely unruffled and uncowed by the stamping of all those tiny Republican feet and the bleating of all those tiny Republican sheep. May he remain so, knowing the majority of American people wish him to continue his investigation.
joe (campbell, ca)
The lack of civility in politics is astounding. Kevin McCarthy, Michael Turner and David Nunes should be ashamed of themselves. Did they not have mothers to teach them the basic difference between right and wrong? Their mouths should be washed out with soap.
Curt Dierdorff (Virginia)
When Mueller's report is provided to the congress and to the American people we can understand what happened and take appropriate action so it does not happen again. There is little doubt that the Russians influenced our 2016 election, and that is not acceptable. Justice is being delayed, but it will not be denied.
Conservative Democrat (WV)
The NYT should call for Mr. Schiff to resign. The shrillness alone of his fake pronouncements make him unfit to serve, Where’s the proof you said you had Mr. Schiff?
LAM (Westfield, NJ)
All his pronouncements are in the public record and simply statements of fact.
PATRICK (State of Opinion)
Even Sessions knew they created a monster.

As usual the real news gets covered up by the Trumpie's inane bluster. This part of the article is what they succeeded in suppressing from public view: Thursday’s showdown came, ironically enough, during a hearing with four subject experts on “Putin’s Playbook: The Kremlin’s Use of Oligarchs, Money and Intelligence in 2016 and Beyond.” Down the line, the witnesses warned that Vladimir V. Putin’s Russia would only grow bolder in its efforts to destabilize western democracies, including the United States. “The bad news is that there is a new ideological fight between Putinism and the West, and it has only just begun,” said Michael McFaul, an ambassador to Moscow under former President Barack Obama. “In my estimation, we as a country are underestimating it.”
Berkshire Brigades (Williamstown, MA)
This is probably the worst report on the House Intelligence Committee hearing I've seen. The headline should have been about Adam Schiff's moral outrage at Republican corruption and compromise, but no. Once again the Times buried the lede. We know there's a chasm on the Committee ... and in the country ... that's not news. The news is that finally the Democrats are in power and won't just close their eyes to the corruption that threatens our country. But of course, the Times was all about EMAILS 2.5 years ago.
Wall Street and Republistan crime (very cool, very winning, very fine)
Over 7000 lies and counting ten new ones per day from Trump vs solely truth and nothing but the truth from Schiff. Yes it's immoral, unethical, unpatriotic, and corrupt what the Trump administration has involved itself in with Putin and his killers and thugs, because it's involvement in conspirative and colluder actions everywhere you look: back channels, Trump Tower meetings, firing the good cops, high fiving the Russians in the White House in a pathetic, triumphant gloating jubilation on top of it, dismantling the Justice and other Departments replacing them with the Office for Loyalty, Sycophancy, and Child Caging to show how spiteful we are. The only thing missing to meet the high legal bar for conspiracy is that the investigation was unable to find the supreme stupidness of a full confession of the conspirative intent taped or written out, as they kept tripping over the collusion and conspiracy in action. Among the culprits involved: Trump himself, his son, daughter, son-in-law, fixer, campaign manager, deputy campaign manager, and national security adviser. Only his dog goes scotfree, as he has none. To make it worse the culprits-in-chief lie, lie, lie, deny, deny, deny, and keep obstructing justice, going as far as to entirely dismantle it, replacing investigative reports with empty, ridiculous retorts signifying nothing, replacing justices with sycophants and partisans. The guy in the WH reigns like a rich mullah in the pocket of ultra rich oligarchs like Putin.

Of course there is a chasm. The Republican lackeys have no interest in doing well by the Country or following any honorable course of action. They are simply tools of the billionaires behind them who wish to destroy government and install an Oligarchy of “Christian” supremacists.
Len (Pennsylvania)
The Republicans demanding that Adam Schiff step down as committee chair reminds me so clearly of when the Democrats asked then-committee chair Devin Nunes to step down when it because apparent he was a Trump flunky. . . Oh wait, that didn't happen. But it should have. The despicable Republicans on this committee have no shame and are blatantly hypocritical. I was happy to see the fire in Chairman Schiff's eyes as he responded to the Republicans on the committee. I want to see more fire in Democrats' eyes.
Guin Leigh (Santa Cruz. CA)
The only day I want to see Rep. Adam Schiff step down from his chairmanship or resign his House seat is January 20, 2020 when he becomes the forty-sixth president of the United States. He’s been my choice for that particular position for the past year and a half. Calm, intelligent, sensible, rational, measured, fair and thoughtful, he is exactly what we will need to help our country get back on track when this nightmare is finally over. Run, Adam, run! Your country needs you
Íris Lee (Minnesota)
Resign? For doing his job? I want to know what’s in this report, and so do 80% of Americans according to a Politico poll. There is a reason why Republicans and Trump, who lie every time they open their mouths, want to keep the report from the public. They obviously have something to hide. Of course the GOP believes the investigation into Russian meddling with our elections and the Trumps’ obstruction is nowhere near as important as Bill Clinton’s sex life, but we beg to disagree.
Alexgri (NYC)
@Íris Lee What job? Schiff lied repeatedly that he had proof of collusion where the Mueller investigation revealed zero.
HSN (NJ)
@Alexgri Barr's summary revealed zero. We are yet to see Mueller report.
anonymous (US)
@Íris Lee Agree agree agree!!!!!
Ronald Aaronson (Armonk, NY)
Let us not forget that Mueller's investigation was first and foremost about Russian meddling in the 2016 election about which Barr could barely mention more than a sentence or two. That investigation resulted in a number of indictments of Russian nationals for involvement in that meddling as well as indictments and convictions of people in the Trump administration for having lied to the FBI or Congress when questioned about the meddling. Some hoax. Even apologist Barr could not get away without mentioning that the Mueller report in no way exonerates Trump from the charge of obstruction of justice. Barr, who auditioned for job of Attorney General with an unsolicited 19-page memo critical of the Mueller investigation, took the position long before Mueller's report came out that a president could not under any circumstance be guilty of obstruction of justice. Barr therefore prejudged the facts of the report, which being over 300 pages, could not have been properly digested over a weekend. Acts committed by someone may not be sufficient to convict that person of a crime but it may show a pattern of corruption that renders that person unfit for office. It is outrageous for Barr to submit anything short of the complete Mueller report to Congress. One must conclude that Barr is participating in a cover up until the full report is produced. As for Mr. Schiff's Republican colleagues, what a deplorable, unpatriotic bunch of hypocritical liars.

A powerful response to Trump's evil GOP dogs. I would like to raise another issue: Why did the Russian probe suddenly end? What secret order? This will be our crucial round to fight back the flagrant violations of our constitution by Trump and his blindly loyal dogs. The Democrats alone could not win this battle. They need strong support and more active role of all patriotic Americans. OK 2020.

I think some people other than myself are beginning to wonder what some of these politicians do to earn their paychecks and provide any tangible benefit to their constituents. It's not limited to Schiff--AOC comes to mind--but Schiff is a prime example of a politician constantly bloviating on TV. He is also the prime example of extreme partisanship which is a serious problem in today's politics in terms of trying to get anything done.
Fascist Fighter (Texas)
Bloviating on TV? That is a skill perfected by Trump lemmings. Gowdy, Nunes, Gaetz, Meadows and of course “Jar-Jar Binks” Lee. Sad!
e. bronte (nyc)
Why is this this the headline - might it not as easily have been Schiff succinctly articulates immorality of current administration? And on NPR, 20x a day I have to hear how Trump was exonerated, leaving out that he was not exonerated of obstruction of justice. When is the media going to get with it?
MDA (Claremont, CA)
It should be noted that the House can’t have “accepted” the Mueller report when they haven’t read the Mueller report. And it is absurd to demand the resignation of Mr. Schiff when Mr. “What’s Wrong With White Supremacy” King remains in Congress. Finally, Mr. Trump has not been “absolved” of anything.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
If the Republicans resigned, that would be the first act in respect of our liberal democracy that.they will have done since Trump was sworn into the office of the President. They been silent as Trump refuses to act like the President, denigrating good work by people in crucial institutions faithfully doing their jobs, condoning acts against our country by denying that they were ever done, condoning crimes against humanity because he does not want to alienate a potential business partner, condoning white nationalist thugs, and deliberately not leading in our alliances. The man represents everything both Democrats and Republicans actually do not respect in leaders but for Trump, Republicans suddenly admire a real despicably behaving President.
UpClose (Texas)
The Democrats are the perfect allies for Putin in his plan to divide, weaken, and destroy our democracy. The publicist who sent that email to Trump Jr. was on CNN today. He threw a bait to get a meeting. Poor judgement by Trump’s inexperienced campaign staff. What about the Steele Dossier. Whatever Schiff and his band of haters have done for last two years has give the Russians a blueprint in causing even more damage. Schiff should resign and get challenged in primaries. It is a disgrace to see him defend himself.
Mike Kaiser (Ohio)
Write your Senator, Congressman. Simply " I don't think it is OK!"
Pragmatist In CT (Westport)
Democrats should remember that in our country, you are innocent until proven guilty. We now have TWO examples where, at the highest level, people were found guilty first, backed by a frenzied media (MSNBC and CNN) that every day broadcast their own version of trials, bringing on “witnesses” to corroborate completely unsubstantiated charges. Trump and Kavanagh. Shame…
RFMollison (Chicago)
@Pragmatist In CT: Yes the presumption of innocence is rigorously applied- in criminal prosecutions. You seem to be unable or unwilling to grasp that distinction, and it appears to be the latter. Shame indeed. Political appointments and Congressional oversight demand that all of the known facts come out. And that certainly appears not to be Mr. Barr's intentions at the present.
John Kozma (Charleston, SC)
@Pragmatist In CT That would be a valid point if you believed, for example, that the only activity Al Capone engaged in that could be considered a crime was tax evasion, which I understand was the only thing he was convicted of. Notably, Mr. Trump has still not released his tax returns.
The Lone Protester (Frankfurt, Germany)
@Pragmatist In CT I would love to have had a trial where "twelve good men and true" (pardon the sexism; it is in the original), see what they think of the evidence against both Trump and Kavanaugh, direct and circumstantial, that is properly put before them and from which they are allowed to draw reasonable conclusions. That has never occurred. What you seem to be objecting to is the media coverage. Perhaps a neutral observer would add Faux News to your list of "frenzied media".
Bill (New York)
Congressman Schiff should resign or be removed from the Intelligence committee. His multiple statements falsely accusing people of crimes have been reckless and irresponsible. It’s ironic that the Congressman’s district is Hollywood, known for creating fantasies. He is apparently refusing to accept reality and relinquish his.
RFMollison (Chicago)
@Bill: So I take it you also demand the resignation of Devine Nunes from Congress for the same reasons; accusing the FBI and its leadership of fabricating evidence; perjury before the FICA court; leaking classified and confidential information to the subject of a Congressional investigation? No?
Zoned (NC)
@RFMollison There is a huge difference between what Schiff did and Nunez did. Mr Schiff ran through a factual list of allegations. Nunez attempted to sidetrack an investigation.
ShadeSeeker (Eagle Rock)
@Bill Schiff has drawn a different conclusion from Barr based on the facts. A disagreement is not a lie nor a false statement. Only a full release of the report will allow us to judge which man has drawn the correct conclusion.

LAM (Westfield, NJ)
Adam Schiff is a hero. He simply stated facts that are in the public record. He did not say that the president was guilty of anything. He demanded that the report be released and, if it is not, that is substantial evidence that Trump and his cronies have something serious to hide.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
He who lives by lies will be humiliated by truth, good bye Trump and his surrogates.
CARL E (Wilmington, NC)
The Republicans would have the American public believe that any and all comments and criticisms of Trump including all the lies are false. It is simply a political ploy to salvage their own reputations and the Republican party. Which calls into focus the sincerity of Mr Schiff's critics which rings hollow given all the American pubic has witnessed. This is not over by a long shot. Have a nice day America.
RMurphy (Bozeman)
Can we talk about Benghazi, or have we found a context the GOP doesnt want to bring it up in?
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
The last two years have been an unremittingly grim and despair-making slog through fetid swamps that often feel like the Le Brea tar pits. Just when we risked becoming dinosaurs stuck in the tar of this hideous status quo along came Schiff. Those five minutes are the one pure thing that has transpired since this debacle began. Everything he said was true. Too many have been focused on the wrong "C." To riff on an old political meme... It's the CORRUPTION, stupid. Some of us have been posting long long lists of the criminal acts, independent of the Mueller investigation, for a reason. We did not and do not need the Mueller report (and I have said this for two straight years, not just now because it's convenient) to know that DJT is unfit in every sense of the word to lead this country. We needed no Mueller report to tell us that. Cooler heads must prevail; this rush to condemn those who wanted truth and clarity is not just insane and unseemly (thought it's both of those) it's dangerous. If we keep normalizing depravity, there is no coming back from this. The Mueller report must be released in its entirety, but beyond that, we must find a way to hold DJT accountable for his 8,000 lies, his gaming of the system, his financial crimes, and his incessant bullying of the people he was elected to serve. The country that thinks any part of THIS is normal, is a country that has lost its moral barometer, common sense, and sense of self-preservation. Make him accountable.
Bryan (Kalamazoo, MI)
Here's an idea: worry about the ACTUAL Russian threat (which was the point of this hearing), and save your demands for Schiff's resignation AT VERY LEAST until Mueller's report is released and can actually be read by all of you, and hopefully everyone else who'd like to read it.
JPE (Maine)
The meetings/conversations that members of Trump's campaign team and/or designated staff had with Russians don't look like collusion or conspiracy... rather as efforts to hit the ground running in a new administration. They are no more "collusion" or "conspiracy" than John Kerry's meetings with Iran's FM to discuss sanctions against that country. We're paying for Clinton's terrible mistakes in reneging on James Baker's pledges to Russia re NATO, and Hillary's stupidity in messing with Russia internal politics.

Stop doing what I think and think for yourselves. I'm not flawless.
Lawrence Zajac (Williamsburg)
It is yet another case of false equivalence. Of course the Democrats would call for the resignation of the committee chair when he blatantly colluded with the target of the investigation. Republicans only see the part: They asked our guy to step down when he was head honcho; now we're going to demand their guy step down now we no longer control things. False equivalence is fake news!

Adam Schiff is a hero. He simply stated facts that are in the public record. It is not necessary for Trump to be guilty of an indictable crime for him to have engaged in unacceptable presidential behavior. Is essential that the report be released in its entire ready.
CommonSense'18 (California)
Dear Representative Schiff: Your "I'm not O.K." speech today in response to the Republicans heinous call for your resignation couldn't have been better - or more factual. We need people like you with guts and gumption. We support you all the way in opposing the most corrupt and incompetent president we've had in modern times. Let's see the entire Mueller Report and draw our own conclusions. This is only the end of the beginning. Other lawsuits and investigations will soon bear witness to what we've known all along about Donald Trump. Go for it, Adam Schiff - we're behind you one hundred percent.

I second these sentiments. Please be firm in your resolve and stand your ground. We need your clear and sane voice. Thank you. I’m sure it’s a difficult position to be in. It is astounding to me that everyone is speaking as if they know what the Mueller Report says. Once again the Republicans have taken control of the narrative even though the facts may not support their stance.

Adam Schiff is without a doubt one of the most articulate, intelligent, and judicious members of Congress. He is truly Presidential. This man graduated from Stanford and Harvard and served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles, where he successfully prosecuted—with a third trial—Richard Miller, a former FBI agent charged with passing state secrets to the Soviet Union in exchange for gold and cash. Mayhap Mr. Schiff knows something about the ways of Russian intelligence. He is not about to be intimidated by Republican thugs. Mr. Schiff’s steely, measured response to Conaway’s bluster is impressive. He never once lost his cool. Nancy Pelosi’s support of him is equally impressive. The ugliness of the Trump effect—to browbeat, attack, demean, and demand—is rather visible in the comportment of Conaway, Nunes, McCarthy—and others. Democrats are much more mannerly. This is a significant difference. Republicans are now the Party of Neanderthals. But let us not insult the Neanderthals.
Ironmike (san diego)
The Republicans have become the rubber stamp legislature--compliant like the Russian Duma or the Communist Chinese assembly of deputies--Perfect for an autocrat like Trump.
Joseph Huben (Upstate NY)
This outrageous attempt by Republicans displays the ferocious determination of Republicans to vanquish their opponents. Democrats must display their own determination to vanquish Republicans as if our lives depend upon it. They do. One would be hard pressed to identify a policy supported by Republicans that benefited all of the American people. Border walls, tax cuts for the rich, fear of foreigners and Muslims, and denying women equality are NOT what America wants. Cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, ending the ACA, and cutting Education are the opposite of what America wants. Republicans are an aberration. They are systematically dismantling our country and its institutions for a handful of very wealthy oligarchs who hate democracy. Adam Schiff is a champion of all of America’s aspirations, rule of law, and government of, by, and for the people. All Democrats and all people who want to restore normal government should stand up against the contemptible effort to undermine our foundation. Trump and Republicans have chosen to provoke hatred division and violence. Their taint must be swept from government and decent society.

I’m sorry but what kind of non-story is this? “In an age of hyperpartisanship, members of the minority are expressing their disapproval of a member of the majority holding a leadership position”. That’s basically the summary of this article. It’s been this way for decades now.

It’s Trump crazy time. Body shaming words making fun of physical appearance with Mr Schiff like he did. when he berated his opponents I debate beating down Cruz and Rubio so bad that they are like lap dogs now. The GOP is rock bottom supporting the abuse of power and challenging the safe guards of our freedom with branches of government being trampled. The FBI, DOJ and CIA insulted with every action. Barr’s sell out. It’s bad. National emergency is the President himself.

I saw / heard Trump's speech at his rally before seeing Schiff's reply to republicans demands to step down. To compare them is an exercise in futility. The Dems should play Schiff's speech as a rebuttal to Trump's over and over and over ... Not sure how the repubs will explain that to the '35%' but it will be fun to watch. Oh, then the boss told them to come up with a healthcare bill ... after 8 years they have nothing ... zilch ... ugatz .. only hatred for Obama & a few pages of 'talking points' ... Meanwhile any reporter worth the title will be asking them about ... That extraordinary 4 minute speech in which Schiff put them in their place ... Can they do both ?
Steve (Washington)
Too funny! Can you spell G-O-P D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N?!?! The report isn't even released, and the Republicans are trying to distract on a claim of victory based on a 1% summary prepared by a Trump hand-picked Republican. Don't believe for a second that there isn't a smoking gun in the 300 pages being hidden by the GOP. Trump's fingerprints may not be on the gun, but it is not going to look good for him and those in his circle when the full document is shown to the public. Having in the past been a Republican and sometimes voted Republican, I am thoroughly disgusted by the magicians slight-of-hand that the GOP is employing. No allegiance to the truth or country; only to party, regardless of how corrupt. Oh, and how is the prosecutorial work of the SDNY coming? Maybe the GOP wants to send out a press release claiming victory on that also before any thing is seen by the public. Shame GOP. Shame!

Adam Schiff, you (we) are clear that it's NOT ok for financial corruption and the systematic undermining of the pillars of democracy to proceed unchallenged. I'm grateful for your clear minded & ethical leadership, for taking on what is, on its face, an immoral & unconstitutional will to power within the GOP. In this epic battle for basic decency & the rule of law, history will (again!) tell the story of how citizens of character and honor prevailed. Stay strong!

It is well worth the time to watch the whole event on c span--- 1) the panelists were very informative re Putin's goals and actions. It is clear that the US is doing next to nothing to arm itself against future attacks. 2) the Republicans on the committee, instead of using their time to ask the panelist's questions, instead chose to use their time to attack Mr. Schiff. And the Republicans made fools of themselves, and evidently they were too embarrassed to continue---they all left well before the end, depriving themselves of the expertise of the panelists. The Republicans were pathetic.
TRJ (Los Angeles)
Shiff's speech was eloquent, on point and passionate in a way that goes well beyond his past measured remarks on this whole situation. Anyone who has followed Adam Schiff at all in the past two years knows that he has been remarkably restrained, often more than I think he should be, in dealing with the despicable partisan Rs providing cover for Trump while betraying their oath of office and their country. The Trump lackeys and swamp rats have attacked Schiff constantly, following the lead of Trump's juvenile and warped twitter comments, in a way that exposes their dishonesty and their complete lack of moral integrity. In fact, I don't know how anyone in this country can in good conscience vote for a single R candidate given the way the party has abandoned whatever principles it had to jump on the Trump turnip wagon with their tongues wagging like rabid canines. It's so revolting I can't fully express my disgust with these spineless partisan hacks.
George (Fla)
@TRJ Well said, WELL SAID
Sixofone (The Village)
Intelligent. Honorable. Fearless. Resign? Why would he do that? He's pushing for the full Mueller report to be publicly released, as well he should. Because justice and democracy demand we know what was actually written, he and other non-Republicans in power shouldn't stop until we do.
MIchael (Reno)
The facts are in (and hopefully more to come). The facts: * Nearly 200 criminal charges, 37 indictments, Trump's inner circle locked up. * Investigation was so narrow that cases were farmed out to at least four US AG offices. * Numerous Congressional investigations opened, some unrelated showing the breadth of corruption in the administration. * The report is detailed. Over 400 pages. * Summary made by a party loyalist who help sweep Iran Contra Affair under the table. * Republicans blocking efforts to release full report. * A foreign enemy poisoned our democracy and the President rants about the deep state to his supporters while Republicans attack Schiff. Words simply cannot describe the insanity, the hypocrisy, or gravity of all this.
RF (Arlington, TX)
The demand by Republicans that Mr. Schiff resign as chair of the House Intelligence Committee should erase all doubt that the Republican Party has become, lock stock and barrel, the Trump Party. They, like Trump, are not interested in honesty and fairness, and they will use any means to discredit Democrats who they perceive as a threat to Donald Trump.
Reuben (Cornwall)
Mr. Schiff is one of the few bright spots in our government today and will not allow himself to be cowed and bullied by the do-nothing Republicans. Personally, I do not accept the Barr report as a meaningful document in the absence of the actual Mueller report, and citizens should not be drawing any conclusions about anything until it is released in full, when it will become clear that the "Barr Report" is a charade.
Alfred di Genis (Germany)
There’s absolutely no reason for Senator Schiff to resign just because he was wrong, totally wrong, persistently wrong and now revels in his distortions, misconceptions, errors, petty megalomania and blinding personal animus. Where would American politics be otherwise?
LAM (Westfield, NJ)
Wait until the report is released before you come to such conclusions.
Sunnieskye (Chicago)
Please. We don't know what Mueller's conclusions are, and any media repeating that we do is genuinely "fake news". What we have is Barr's 4-pae cover. Remember that trump gave Barr's daughter and son-in-law jobs in our government, which in any context can only be called a bribe. Barr is trump's creature. Quit the false equivalence, you are doing America a disservice with it.

If the report exonerates Donald, then release it. Republicans should be falling all over themselves trying to.
dpr (Other Left Coast)
Republicans whine about Adam Schiff inappropriately promoting false stories. Note, however, Schiff’s litany of acts was accurate; every one of those acts by Trump and those around him that Schiff listed actually happened. And no, those acts really are not okay. Republicans who think they are all okay are the ones who should resign their positions. By the way, Devin Nunes’ introductory comments were one of the most ludicrous moments of the hearing. Nunes, who has been pro-Russian enough to earn the designation “R-Vladivostok” from some jokesters, took Democrats to task for not recognizing the Russian threat sufficiently. I guess it’s really true that irony is dead.
Tom (Upstate NY)
The GOP are issuing the same message in unison right after Trump announced he would go after his enemies. The great thing about Trump is that you don't need secret tapes. He doesn't possess the intelligence or self-discipline to not broadcast his intent. He needs to keep his base constantly roiled and on edge. And his Congressional lapdogs in line. It is obvious a 4 page summary should not be the lasting legacy after 22 months of Mr. Mueller's work. In that time Trump surrounded himself with a group of treasonous lowlifes, many of whom are in or probably going to jail. That our country is run by such people is no exoneration. Let us not confuse sidestepping criminal statutes with high moral purpose. Ness and company never got Capone on all his criminal acts, including racketeering. They did get his tax returns though..... In the meantime the GOP smoke and mirrors and is simply an attempt to move on quickly in a phony victory lap. Trump should not start posing for Mt. Rushmore anytime soon, despite his penchant for describing himself as the best at everything.

Face it, if Clinton had won the election this never would of happened. The Press and the "Intelligence Agencies" would have been lock step behind the Dems and it would have been business as usual, thankfully the American people got in the way and voted in Donald J Trump. The real "collusion" is between the Dems and the "intelligence agencies" the investigators need to be investigated. On top of all that the Press is an embarrassment and they dont care, it is truly pathetic, and a threat to all things decent and American.

I think there are two things that are pretty obvious that one could have predicted. One that the Mueller report would not be enough to base a case to impeach Trump. If it had this information they would have made that fact known a long time ago. This is why instead of investigating the original complaints the commission went in different direction that those opposed to Trump had no problem with because all they cared about was getting Trump out of office and into a jail cell. Second there is enough information in the report that can't be used to impeach Trump but can be used by some to justify their hatred for the man and their belief that they will eventually will find some information that can be used to get him impeached. These people will likely if they do not stop looking for a way to impeach Trump might get him elected if they do not succeed in their quest. Unless you can convince people in states he won in 2016 to vote for someone else then Trump will win. The Democrats I assume have known this for a long time and therefore have conducted studies to tell them how this can be done. I think they have determined they will not win if they let the progressive wing of their party take it over and they will continue their quest to get Trump impeached because of the negative stuff in this report. So I urge that the people who want the right to see the entire report to understand that this will not help them to defeat Trump. It might get him elected.

Once again we've seen another instance where Republican leaders, and by the way on the record and clearly in the crosshairs of history, continue to shamelessly indicate where they stand in relation to president Trump, a performance of earnest support for this greatly flawed president. And with regard to our Democrats, I for one can stand proudly behind them after watching Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff during the Intel Committee hearing yesterday. His performance, also on the record and in the crosshairs of history, but unlike what we all witnessed from the Republican members on the Intel Committee, was a display to be emulated for future devotees studying the nature of Democracy and how it is to be enacted.

Mr. Schiff; In one of the darkest of times for our 243 year old county, YOU are a Beacon lighting the path back to a just and lawful America. An America where both political parties may have some different ideas of just how to traverse some difficult obstacles en route to a better country and world - And always doing so for the good of the American People with our Constitution as their Compass. An America where both political parties understand that they work for the American people and not for corporate giants or the extremely wealthy. An America where are political party members treat each other with civility, professional respect, and of course honesty. Mr. Adam Schiff; "You are exactly this sort of man and American Patriot - Stay your course.
LAM (Westfield, NJ)

I suspect Schiff has seen intelligence reports that support his conclusions about "collusion." I put the word in quotation marks because it doesn't have a legal meaning. Republicans would do well to consider that even Barr's report on the report said Mueller specifically did not exonerate Trump of obstructing justice. The "victory lap" ignores that. I am glad that Mueller did not indict Trump, his family and other supporters. I think that would have been very bad for the nation, but it's almost as bad that Republicans are insisting Mueller decided Trump was "innocent." It's also hard to believe that people who were attacking Mueller and his crew just a few days ago are now lauding his report. We still don't know the truth and, sometimes, alternative facts are just not enough. Too bad so many reporters get pulled into the trap and headlines echo the Trump line.
Edward (Honolulu)
One can see how far impeachment would go at this stage of things. The Dems were hoping the Mueller report would turn the tide of Republican support for Trump and make it politically inexpedient to come to his defense. In fact the opposite has happened. The Dems don’t want to admit it but their ship has been stranded on the beach, and the only way to get afloat again is to forget Russian collusion and Mueller and all those Sirens who lured them with fantasies of Trump being forced from office to their own destruction and to do what they can as Democrats and members of the loyal opposition to right the ship and to work again on the real problems of America.
srwdm (Boston)
Of course there was collusion— That is self evident. I would think Trump’s disorganized lurching campaign would not have the organizational capacity to “conspire“ in any detailed or comprehensive way. And of course there was continuous obstruction of justice by a flailing Mr. Trump, and much more to be learned from multiple ongoing investigations.
Sager (North Beach, Md)
It is now incumbent upon the media - more than ever - to keep out of the headlines any language favoring the corrupt policies of this administration and make it clear that the public deserves and wants better. I beg The NY Times to put Mr. Schiff’s messages in the headlines - not those of the crony Republicans. Time to shift the narrative before it’s too late again.

Excuse me, but doesn't Mueller's ENTIRE report need to be read before we put this thing to bed? How can there be so much smoke with no fire at all? It strains credulity to think Barr read 300-400 pages carefully and thoughtfully before writing his four pages that were read aloud to Trump. It's like a child's game of telephone, where the original message is unrecognizable by the time it gets to the end of the line.

Mr. Schiff: As an avid reader of history, I predict your words will be historic, that you will be seen as a patriot while your Republican attackers will be seen as folding our flag and offering it to a dictator. This is not a drill. Our democracy is at stake. Your voice has been one of the most effective in resisting what is a long and well-planned campaign to rule a majority by an unprincipled minority that seeks to win at any cost.

Trump and his Republicans can attack and deflect and scream bloody murder, but they can't stop the cascade of shoes about to drop. Barr will hold onto Mueller's report as long as he can to give them as much time as possible to spin, spin, spin, but eventually the report will be made public. If it is redacted beyond reasonable limits, that, too, will be challenged. And it seems quite possible that Barr and Mueller will be answering questions under oath in a public hearing. Mueller's answers I would take to the bank; Barr's, not so much, but it would be interesting to see which questions he would refuse to answer. Trump and his cohorts were terrified before Mueller's investigation was completed and his report written, because they know what's out there that he might have found. Even though no additional indictments were issued by Mueller's office and insufficient evidence was found to support a finding of criminal conspiracy, they're still terrified. By now Trump surely knows what's in the report, which probably explains his more vicious than usual attacks on Adam Schiff. Come what may, the truth will out.

Adam Schiff - evidence of collusion Mueller - investigation did not establish collusion
AACNY (New York)
Schiff has been democrats' most prolific peddler of false narratives. Granted, Trump's critics want to hear these things -- in fact, they demand it -- but it doesn't change the fact that Schiff has shamelessly made statements -- ex., that he has "evidence" of collusion -- that are simply not true. Trump's critics have to decide whether they want to keep consuming fake news (because it comports with their own views) or demand honesty from their own party the way they demand it from the other party.
Janice (Fancy free)
We only have the 4 page cliff notes from a blind Trump loyalist summarizing a 300 page (about) document. Plus, there are notable questions raised from the skim sheet. Obviously Republicans are afraid of the report’s contents, otherwise it would see the light of day. I don’t accept a book jacket summary as the read and toss out the book.

At the difference of Ken Starr who was an Independent Counsel appointed by a panel of three judges, Bob Mueller is a Special Counsel appointed by Trump's DOJ. Moreover, significant changes regarding the full release of the report were made in 1999. The 346 pages of the Ken Starr report included very salacious details about President Clinton and others, which prompted the changes. If Rep. Schiff had evidence of collusion by the Trump campaign, why is Trump still in office? The time to come forward was yesterday. Are we now stuck on the no-collusion decision by Bob Mueller because obstruction will be impossible to prove? Mueller had the resources, the power, and the time to investigate and he came up with a decision of no collusion. On obstruction he punted the decision up to his boss, Barr. Let's keep in mind they are both, directly or indirectly, Trump appointees.

Advise Russia it is not in their best interests to align with the Republicans in any future fight. From George Bush's ranch pickup ride with Putin to Trump's connections to Russia and secret meeting with Putin, it seems as though I'm right but I sincerely hope these are movements towards world peace. It's questionable as that reality has not been alluded to publicly, but I'm hopeful.
M.W. Endres (St.Louis)
It's not a surprise that the Republicans on the intelligence committee are ripping into Representative Adam Schiff(Leader of the Democrats on the committee) It's also no surprise that Republican Trump is ripping into the Democrats again today because that's what he does. The fact is that we Americans have come to expect our two political parties to go after each other with anger, vitriol. After all this time, it doesn't occur to us that our two party system doesn't work all that well. It seems to be getting worse. So what is better, you ask. The answer is right in front of us but we don't see it. It's not all that complicated. Money to run for public office is raised by the public (Public Funding) Candidates running for an office receive equal amounts. (No more money in politics) We decide the winner because of what they say to us. What are their beliefs. Their campaigns are lengthy enough for us to understand them and how they would lead. No parties, we each vote for a person. We waste money having our candidates run around the country concentrating on certain "early" states which is wrong in itself. We chose a complicated electoral college that has produced unjust results. The expected reaction to this "new" method of elections, "It sounds good, but it won't work here" This is what they said about going to the moon but we've already had six manned flights there plus many unmanned. Changing our method of elections is "peanuts" compared to other past changes.
Frank Casa (Durham)
Don't listen to them. They would love to let this matter go and declare total innocence. Trump may have not committed a provable crime (although I'd wait until the full report comes out), but he is by nature and inclination a person who goes to the edge of legality and often crosses it. Don't forget these are the people who have investigated for years and they now want to take without hesitation a doubtful rendering of the Mueller report. They refused to accept the judgement of the Justice Department with respect to Clinton, but they now take it as sacred truth the judgement of the same department.
SGC (NYC)
Honorable Schiff's moral courage is a testament to authentic servant leadership for the people in our representative democracy. Senator Kevin McCarthy and his unethical comrades shall be judged by history and the republic for their political misdeeds and corruption by the electorate!
Lazlo K. Hud (Ochos Rios)
Schiff has been accused of leaking by his own committee members and by other members of Congress. As former congressman Gowdy said moths ago, “if there really was any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians, Adam Schiff would have leaked it by now”. Clearly Schiff’s job is to obfuscate and misdirect, not missing a beat when Barr’s Mueller memo came out. Schiff does not come across in the media as trustworthy, appearing almost maniacal at times. Schiff’s leaking and absolute partisanship is what caused the committee to fracture last year, leading the committee to construct physical barriers between the two groups of party reps. Schiff should step down, for the good of the committee and for the good of the country. Gross miscalculations by the intelligence services in the Russian collusion investigations mean fresh eyes and ideas are needed to provide the oversight required to correct these institutions and set them back on a road where they can regain the country’s respect.
D. DeMarco (Baltimore)
I thought Schiff was magnificent. Finally, and now in the public record, an accounting of the actions of Trump and his cohorts. Reality has a foothold. The Democrats must press on. Subpoena Mueller and his report if Barr refuses to provide Congress with an unredacted report. Congress deals with classified material every day. There is no cause for the Attorney General to deny them the grand jury material unless it is to protect Trump. And I would also like to point out this - Compare Schiff's calm demeanor and simmering anger with Kavanaugh's tearful shouting rage We saw the righteous anger of a honest man when Schiff spoke. A morally decent man appalled by the corruption before him. A patriot putting the good of his country before himself and his political party. Everything that was lacking when Kavanaugh spoke.
PATRICK (State of Opinion)
It will be hard for the public to digest what remains of the investigation report likely being cleansed by Republican loyalists, so it begs the need for a Constitutionally mandated oversight by summoning Mueller and his top investigators and prosecutors to testify openly and exhaustively before the Committee. The investigation conducted by the family of Republican principals must be shared in Congress for all to see, not hidden by a secret government of questionable motives in the highest reaches.
Votecaster (MS)
Bravo and wild applause! Adam Schiff gave a powerful and momentous speech that will forever be etched in history! Those who agonize and clamor to cover up the truth will earn their place in history too, though it surely will not garner the praise of patriots. Mueller's investigation was not a fruitless "witch hunt". Multiple witches were caught. Many in Trump's closest inner circle were involved and had over 100 contacts with Russia during the campaign. Our country was attacked during the last election by a hostile foreign power. To ignore that, is to put party over country. Trump was not exonerated! He was allowed by a complacent Congress to install Barr, as his own judge. It's imperative that we see Mueller's report. After all, it is the duty of we the people to oversee our own government, scrutinize our elected officials and protect our democracy, lest we risk losing it.
Didier (Charleston, WV)
Democrats overplayed their hand on the Mueller Report and, now, Republicans are overplaying their hand on the Mueller Report. Another reminder of why I am not a member of either party.
Mr Chang Shih An (CALIFORNIA)
It is better that Schiff does not resign and keeps his investigation of collusion and obstruction of justice going up to the next election. Maybe one day he will also run for POTUS.
Andy (New Jersey)
Is anyone taking action toward Russia for meddling in our elections in the first place? Congress, the president and the media seem to be overlooking something critically important. There is finger pointing on whether there was collusion, questions if the Mueller report really does have more on collusion, and if there was obstruction. But why no action against Russia? And what are we doing to prevent further hacking?
Jane E. (Northridge, CA)
Mr. Schiff's speech was powerful and moving. I am reminded of Barbara Jordan's speech in 1974 when she presented the case against Richard Nixon during the Watergate Hearings. She is a great hero of mine and would have been a terrific Supreme Court Justice had she not been taken from us so young. It isn't often that we have the opportunity to hear great and honorable Americans speak so eloquently about honestly, principle, justice and the rule of law. Mr. Schiff's speech today will be remembered as one of the great speeches of our time. He stood his ground with quiet strength, dignity, and honor. He is a true hero.
Danielle Davidson (Canada and USA)
Schiff lied and continues to lie. Americans know the truth now. Schiff will design as he should.
Isaac McDaniel (Louisville, Kentucky)
Schiff's eloquent retort will linger in memory alongside Joseph Welch's takedown of Joe McCarthy.
West Coaster (Asia)
@Isaac McDaniel Sure it will.
Judy Pecsok (Castle Rock, CO)
@BearBoysay what??? Now even remotely.
Lexicron (Portland)
@BearBoy Sounds like you've been away from actual history for a while. Read up on HUAC (House UnAmerican Activities Committee) and Joe McCarthy. The New Yorker magazine probably has its excellent multi-part piece in its archives. Short form: Schiff is the opposite of McCarthy, but read it for yourself. There are transcripts.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Traditionally when a bad behaving leader of a Party escapes prosecution, the sooner the issues that brought the scandal are forgotten, the better. But Republicans take this opportunity to do a redux and attempt to rewrite history. The next thing will be to try to seize all copies of reports about the story and rewrite or photoshop it all to replace Trump and all of his people with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and prominent Democrats. Then they will demand that they all be prosecuted for conspiracy with the Russians and obstruction of Justice. Next they will try to pass a law against, Harassment of the President. If anyone angers Trump enough to cause him to tweet, five years hard labor.
gretab (ohio)
The GOP should be careful invoking the memory of McCarthy. By doing so, they remind the American public it was the *GOP* behind his efforts. They remind them it was the *GOP* behind Nixon and Watergate. By bringing William Barr back as AG, they remind the public it was the *GOP* behind Irangate and Iran-Contra under Reagan and Bush. And everytime, the GOP brushed everything under the rug and left it to Democrats to clean up after them.
Michele (Seattle)
Stay strong, Mr. Schiff! You have approached your job with integrity and seriousness of purpose. Thank you for putting the protection of our country as the highest priority. You've had our backs-- we've got yours.
Jestak (Eastern Washington)
If the standards that House Republicans want to apply now to Schiff had been applied to their own caucus during the Clinton or Obama years, they would not have been able to find enough members to fill the full roster of committee and subcommittee chairs.
Scott (California)
My wish is for Adam Schiff to be the next Speaker Of The House, and have a long, illustrious career similar to Tip O’Neill, or Sam Rayburn.
Peter Aretin (Boulder, Colorado)
As Americans become increasingly dissatisfied with a minority government by the wealthy, for the wealthy, and of the wealthy, Trumpublicans can be expected to grow increasingly strident and angry and to employ increasingly desperate measures to rig the system to their advantage. Their haste to pack the courts with conservative judges is but one system of a growing sense of desperation.
David Henry (Concord)
Schiff can stand the heat, and will not leave the kitchen. The GOP best not remind America of McCarthyism, since it stands as a vivid reminder of how little it has learned in 60 years.
David Minter (melbourne)
@David Henry Did you catch the rot that came out of the mouth of Rep. Mo Brooks on C span? so much fantasy shouldn't be allowed in congress, likening Democrats to socialists and equating that with Nazism. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/two-gop-lawmakers-invoke-hitler-hammer-democrats-n987571
Eliza (California)
Adam Schiff is my representative in the House, and knowing that the person I voted for is out there fighting the good fight for this country is pretty much the only thing keeping me from despair.
MLC NYC (Manhattan)
Good god, yes
Quandry (LI,NY)
After the unilateral GOP antics from 2016 through 2018, of the House Intelligence Committee and former Chairman Devin Nunes and company, ignoring almost every request by Dems to be heard or calling witnesses, and disallowing almost any input therefrom, it takes a certain temerity to criticize Chairman Adam Schiff now. Remember, after the GOP meetings, Nunes would run to the White House to report and confer therewith. What was the justification for that? This is supposed to be an independent Congressional Committee. It should not be subordinate to the Executive Branch. Now, in equivalent fairness, the GOP will have to sit back, while allowing the Dems to head the Committee, and set the agenda, and call the witnesses. Why should Schiff and the Dems be held to a different standard than Nunes and the GOP held for the proceeding two years? The world is round, and it is now time to be heard by the other side after the prior two years of GOP stonewalling!
PATRICK (State of Opinion)
Mr. Schiff; Steer the true coarse. If the report is released, it has yet to be understood. All the coordinated flak propaganda from Trump and his owned Congressional Republicans are designed to obscure the fact that much information is yet to come. Your Republican committee members are rattling you. Herald the coming report every time they claim vindication from a Republican President appointed Republican Attorney General overseeing the investigation by a Republican investigator of a Republican President. The report will likely be a sham, but read between the lines. We are deep in a Constitutional Crisis. The Republicans are with the Russians in their "New World Order". Trump's earliest campaign supporter of significance was Former Republican Senator Session who likely coordinated campaign knowledge with his Republican Congressional colleagues. It's a coup by Republicans who constantly cultivated the loyalty of the Military with billions of dollars and gun owners with the promises of support of the Second Amendment. It's the culmination of former Speaker Newt Gingrich's declaration of the "Republican Revolution" in 1994.
Shappy0 (Youngstown, Ohio)
Quick question to all of you: Would you fight to defend this country? I mean what's left of it . . . I'm old enough to feel the United States was unique, worth defending. I really believed the old 'greatest country on earth' myth the Republicans try to pawn off on us as they openly steal everything that's ever made us great----integrity, rule of law (not men), honesty, truth, separation of power and co-equal branches of government, fierce pride in protecting the U.S. against hostile interests of foreign nations, free elections, free press, free speech, decorum . . . the list is virtually endless. And along comes Adam Schiff to remind us of just how much we have lost.
Bill B (Michigan)
I hope all of America gets a chance to hear Congressman Schiff's response to the GOP attempt to smear him and his investigation. It was concise, it was brutally honest and it was a brilliant summation of what we have witnessed since the beginning of the Trump attack on our democracy. Priceless.
Buoy Duncan (Dunedin, Florida)
Mr Schiff should not consider resigning. What Trump went through is called accountability and millions of Americans face it every day. There was plenty of reason to conduct what was a counterintelligence investigation. Republicans simply want to drive home as much damage as possible and make further investigation stop. No such luck. Trump owes Mueller and many others an apology for his incessant whining
Mary Fiedler (Honolulu)
That takes a LOT of gall from the Republican members of the committee. I thought that Will Hurd was smarter than that - I was mistaken.
Steven McCain (New York)
The Right and Trump are making Schiff a hero. We love the way Schiff gets under Trump's skin. We also love to see Trump's minions carrying Trump's water in their denunciation of Schiff.
BB (Greeley, Colorado)
We are 100% behind you, me Schiff. If the President has nothing to hide, he should release the entire Mr. Mueller report and put an end to what has divided this country.
rocky vermont (vermont)
While the sycophantic Devin Nunes has embarrassed the country for the past two years, Adam Schiff has served with dignity and lawyerly understatement. The disgusting Republicans who call for him to give up his continuing struggle to follow his oath of office are trying to subvert justice. The committee should call Billy Barr to answer questions under oath. We might then hear something truthful from the AG.
Paul Dobbs (Cornville, AZ)
If you listen to Schiff, it's clear his method, like that of any good lawyer, is to uncover and enable understanding of facts. If you listen to his Republican accusers, it becomes clear that their method, like that of Senator McCarthy, is to employ innuendo and intimidation.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
If anyone from Trump's base is reading this. I do respect you. I just have a couple of questions. Do you respect any fellow Americans on the left? Any at all? I think you may have hurt their feelings somewhat. Do you like Putin more than AOC? But the main thing I am curious about is this and I am being sincere here. Are you not a bit suspicious that after overwhelming agreement to release the Mueller report on both sides including McConnell and Donald himself, that Mitch is blocking the release and that they are so obviously trying to avoid letting you see it? Are you really so trusting, given the way they are behaving? Could you kindly respond on here because a lot of people really want to hear your opinion. Everybody is genuinely open to your views on this. We really want your opinion and respectfully at that. Because your continued support for Trump and co is truly mystifying. Help us out here.
Michael N. Alexander (Lexington, Mass.)
Kevin McCarthy and his Republican House compatriots clearly have no sense of irony. They accuse Adam Schiff of McCarthyism (one assumes they mean Joe), when the President they defend was a disciple of Joe McCarthy’s notorious sidekick, Roy Cohn. They accuse Adam Schiff of lying, attempting to defend a president who publicly lies several times a day, on average. Their accusation of lying is itself a tissue of falsehoods. What Joseph Welch famously asked Joe McCarthy could well be asked of the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee: *Do you have no decency, at long last?*
G (New York, NY)
Why does this article frame the news around absurd Republican demands instead of around Sen. Schiff's amazing speech pointing out the network of corruption between Trump and Russia?
Steven McCain (New York)
The chasm has been there since the election of Obama and the rise of The Tea Party. The same party that voted over seventy times to jill healthcare wants to call Schiff out for lying? A party led by a president who has lied over seven thousand times has the audacity to call for Schiffs resignation? Trump's base may be willing to follow him but will moderates go for the hypocrisy? People at times really hate to played like idiots. The calls for Schiff's resignation because of lying by a party led by Trump is laughable.
Robert (Seattle)
These Republicans are appalling. Dishonest, corrupt, immoral. Their performance at the committee today was a sick stunt. This is our democracy that they are playing with. Everything Mr. Schiff said at the committee meeting was factual. Schiff and Speaker Pelosi are exemplary public servants and, simply, good and decent people.
RHM (GA.)
Thank you Rep. Adam Schiff for explaining so many things about the current debacle this republic is in, on your own time, I think your insight helped many citizens feel confident about the strength of our democracy. Thanks much for making the fool of Nunes, also.
Robert (Out West)
Nunes made Nunes a fool.
Sally (California)
Mueller and Barr have said that Trump was not exonerated on obstruction of justice. Everything Schiff said today in response to the president and Republican's attack on him has been reported and widely known about the connections between Russia and the Trump campaign. Russia assisted Trump's campaign and no one from Trump's campaign objected and Trump actually encouraged it. Schiff is determined, effective, and hard working and is providing much needed oversight.
TeresaLewis (Texas)
Mr. Schiff--you are doing a great job. Unfortunately so good that trump has noticed and has sic'ed the republican committee members on you. We are depending on you and Nadler and Cummings and others to keep investigating and recommend legislation to deal with foreign campaign interference. Which is not ok with us.
Russ (Pennsylvania)
Let us suppose for the sake of argument that the Mueller report contains no additional evidence of collusion or misconduct by members of the Trump team, beyond what is already publicly known. In that case, we have 3 dozen indictments, meetings between Trump's family and Russians providing dirt on Clinton, and efforts to establish a relationship along these lines. Schiff has already laid this out. We already have publicly available evidence of crimes by 3 dozen associates in Trump's close circle and publicly available evidence of conduct that, if not sufficient to produce additional convictions, reveals unethical actions on behalf of Trump. Republicans are jumping the gun in their suggestions that Trump is exonerated. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the G.O.P is removed from power in 2020. It's not hard to imagine kangaroo courts and willful prosecution of political enemies if the GOP regains the House and keeps the White House.
me (AZ, unfortunately)
Until Congress (at a minimum) reads the complete and unexpurgated Mueller report, it is impossible to know for certain that Rep. Schiff is not completely correct in his assessment of Trump's conduct. AG Barr: people who are not blind loyalists to Trump can see right through your deception.
Cynthia (Houston TX)
The GOP is off on this. Adam Schiff has the integrity that shines unlike the GOP members calling for his recognition.
WeHadAllBetterPayAttentionNow (Southwest)
Schiff was brilliant. Nunes sat there dumbstruck. There is no sincere Republican anger over the Mueller investigation. They are just trying to milk Barr's coverup as much as they can, and hoping that enough Americans don't bother to push for, or read, the full report.
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
Mr. Schiff is a true American patriot. He is the hero we need! He is the hero we must keep in Congress!
denmtz (New Mexico)
The Mueller report in its entirety needs to be released. The Republicans show nothing but contempt for every American by refusing to release the report.
EC (NY / Australia)
We love you Adam Schiff. Keep doing what you are doing.
Marlo (Illinois)
Great job today Mr. Schiff!!! Thanks for standing up for decency and truth!!!!!
Steve (New York)
We could use this a textbook example of chutzpah. The Republicans held hearings and did extensive investigations of Hillary Clinton in the Benghazi affair when there was absolutely no evidence that she did anything wrong. And if the Republicans are so concerned about truth they must still believe Obama was born in Africa or else they would tell Trump to resign.
Randolph Rhett (San Diego)
Only the incredible overreach and hypocrisy of the Republicans could finally shock a response from the Democrats. So far the Democrats have been meekly accepting the Barr report and, again, allowing the Republicans to control the discourse. Congratulations, Mr. Schiff, for showing even a little indignation in the face of total hypocrisy and histrionics. "Conclusively refute"? A three page summary that flies in the face of what we already know? What, did Manafort suddenly NOT send polling data to the Russians? Did Don Jr suddenly NOT accept a meeting to receive "dirt" on Hillary Clinton? Did Flynn suddenly NOT meet with Russians and lie about it? Did Stone suddenly NOT triangulate between WikiLeaks and the Russians? OF COURSE there was collusion. Either Barr is mischaracterizing what is in the report or they are defining "collusion" so narrowly as to not have any real meaning. How about, for once, the Democrats get out of their meek defensive crouch and get in front of the message!
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
It's official. This country has lost whatever vestiges of its collective mind remained after the election. Calls for the press to "apologize"? Really? Calls in the Guardian for Rachel Maddow to grovel and beg forgiveness for covering this, the most important story in my lifetime. And for what? Doing her job as a journalist?! Calls for Schiff's "head" for... for what? Doing his job?! I feared this outcome was inevitable, but I really thought the left might have learned something over the past few years about how dire the stakes are when we throw up our hands and cave into depravity. Instead, it's the left rushing to self-immolate and cannibalize itself. The report had not been out for five minutes before Anderson Cooper was falling all over himself and throwing ashes and gnashing his teeth about how wrong we had all been. No. We. Weren't. We had an imperative to investigate. The POTUS, himself, announced on national TV that he wanted "Rusher" to hack Clinton's emails. He doubled down on this lunacy by announcing, again on national TV, that he had fired Comey because of "The Rusher investigation." His administration has hobnobbed with Russians for inexplicable reasons. When the man, himself, announces criminal intent, an investigation is imperative. This notion that the press should have had a crystal ball to predict the outcome is insane. The calls for apologies are insane. The notion that RM has to flagellate herself is inane and insane. Schiff speaks truth. Listen.
NoVa Guy (Burke, VA)
Republicans once again are about to shoot themselves in the foot. When the full Mueller report is released, the scope and depth of Trump cronies’ contacts with Russians will be on view for all to see. Try as they might, Republicans will be unable to use slanderous attacks to hide the truth. Beware Trumpsters— the day of reckoning is fast approaching.
Ajax (Georgia)
To every single Republican in Congress I ask: "Have you no decency?"
Mike (California)
Let me see: The people of California put Mr. Schiff in office so I believe they are the only ones who can remove him. Or maybe I'm missing something Donald's party knows and I don't.
mikeo26 (Albany, NY)
If Adam Schiff resigns the People should take to the streets. I will.
Jason Esq. (Iowa)
Schiff is on point. A real patriot.
dutchiris (Berkeley, CA)
"On Thursday, as Democrats and Republicans in the House traded recriminations, the Senate panel quietly called back for another interview with Jared Kushner, . . . " What is the point of interviewing Kushner? Would anyone seriously believe anything he says? One of the creepier members of the White House crew, he is so deeply entrenched in the Trump cabal of back dealers that he probably is no longer troubled by the concept of truth. It's a variable, mostly consisting of what seeps out of the undercover dealings of the money crowd and can always be just lied away.
StretchL (Champaign-Urbana)
The writer left out the fact that the House Republicans’ demand is a direct reflection of the “advisory” the RNC recently sent out to journalists regarding Schiff.
sammy zoso (Chicago)
Let Trump resign. He's the crook, not Schiff.
kay (new york)
Calls for Schiff to resign are disgustingly inappropriate. The corrupt intent of republicans is blatant and on full display. The public sees right through them. Americans want the truth and Republicans keep lying to them. Schiff wants the truth and that is why they are attacking him. What they don't realize is all Americans want the truth and in attacking him, they are attacking all of us.
Winifred Haun (Chicago, IL)
Its interesting to me that the Times has (once again) decided to call the disagreements between the Republicans and Democrats in the House a case of "both sides do it". The (NYT Report of the Barr Report of the) Mueller Report does *not* exonerate the President and we all know it. And yet this article fails to mention that the Republican's defense of the President are without merit. This isn't a "chasm." This is the Democrats siting facts (its publicly known that the President, his aides, and his family had multiple contacts with the Russians and then lied about them) while the Republicans defend their corrupt President. The headline should read, "Demands for Adam Schiff to Resign Highlight the Lengths that Republicans Will Go To to Defend Trump's Lack of Ethics" Subtitle: "Fear of Retribution from Trump Causes Republicans to Make Ridiculous Demands"
Imperato (NYC)
Republicans are the height of the ridiculous.
David Gregory (Sunbelt)
Not a fan of Schiff, but the Republicans have NO credibility with Devin Nunes who is about as big an idiot as has ever held a committee chair in modern times. And McCarthy has about as much credibility as Harvey Weinstein.
Eric Anderson (Irvine, CA)
What a bunch of hypocrites. The GOP lies, cheats and grifts its way through the presidency, but they want to pillory a guy that calls it like it is. If it walks and talks like a duck, it's probably a duck.
PATRICK (State of Opinion)
Mr. Schiff; Trump said tonight, quoting this paper....... "“They’re on artificial respirators right now,” Mr. Trump said, his voice dripping with contempt. “They’re giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Little pencil-neck Adam Schiff. He’s got the smallest, thinnest neck I’ve ever seen.”". It appears possible that in Trump's severe rage after playing 'possom during the Mueller Investigation, he has threatened you and I as well. Respirators played a part in my life that is well known to Trump and his people. I lived in New York. I know New York Thugs behavior. He was threatening us at his moment of rage. Someone should advise him of his Miranda rights.
itsmecraig (sacramento, calif)
Schiff's cogent, reasoned, and damning response is exactly why his constituents (and the rest of us, too) love him. Resign? Ha!

MIMA (heartsny)
To Mr. Schiff: simply put - do NOT resign. The American people need you. The Republicans fear you. Justice in this country respects you. Donald Trump’s family has proven to be mindless and classless towards you. Never mind them or Congressional members who oppose you. You are supported by many out here. Stay put. Please.
JBC (NC)
@MIMA The Republicans have a number of unpleasant, nauseating reactions to and feelings about Schiff, but fear isn't even on the same planet.

@MIMA .. and to Donald Trump and the his ilk: Be Best.
Uncleluie (Michigan)
@MIMA Republicans have no standing and nothing to say about Rep Schiff or any other Democrat until the entire Muller report is released. Then we the people will have the right to form our own opinions and not rely on the gamesmanship of Barr.
Sophia (chicago)
Schiff for President.
Shar (Atlanta)
Adam Schiff is right. The Republicans are so far away from any standard of basic decency or integrity that a person who says "This is not okay" poses an existential threat. The problem is not Mr. Schiff.
Richard Winchester (Rockford)
Schiff should not resign. Remember, he says that he has secret information that Trump colluded with the Russians. We need his continued allegations.
Karn Griffen (Riverside, CA)
The House republicans have now joined Trump in the gutter. Never has one president and one party acted so guilty. The Mueller report must be a zinger.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
The Republicans are groveling before Trump. Maybe he will toss some cake at them in gratitude. Everyone one of them knows that Trump and his campaign were lousy with Russians as he denied any contacts. Knows Trump denied what the Russians were clearly doing, shivers in joy at the proximity of Putin, and frequently meets in secret with him, and tries to act like an emperor rather than our President. Yet, it’s anyone who expresses concern about Trump’s behavior who should apologize and just go away.
REF (Boston, MA)
If GOP members of the House and Senate are so into demanding the resignation of anyone whose utterances may have hurt someone eles's tender feelings, then perhaps Ted Cruz and his friends (if he can locate any) should demand that Donald Trump resign for suggesting Cruz's father had something to do with the Kennedy assassination.
Stefan (San Francisco)
Collusion wasn’t really the problem —witness trump junior’s glaring ineptitude. It was and is that trump is compromised by his entanglement with Russian oligarchs, who are in turn controlled by Putin. Follow the money, it will lead to the truth, ugly as it may be.
Jake News (Abiquiú NM)
This rep Conaway is another alumni of the Louie Gohmert Charm Academy the Republicans fund down there in Texas.
JR (CA)
Trump said he was eager to testify in person but he did not do so. Why? Many euphimisms were put forth, but the answer was: his attorneys knew the president lies a lot. This propensity, this love of lying, is reason enough to suspect wrongdoing. Assuming the president was the grateful recipient of Russian hacking but did not get in on the fun, many mysteries remain about this presidency. What is so shocking about the president's income taxes that they can never be revealed? And why does he behave, not like an innocent man, but like a caged animal?
James (US)
It's sad but amusing to watch Dems still living in denial that Mueller cleared the Trump campaign of collusion. Collusion was (is?) the fantasy answer to explain Hillary's loss w/o blaming her.
Greg (Boston)
The dust cleared, and this shows how many individual indictments, arraignments, and pleas for common sense. An administration that is benefiting itself financially. These folks wouldn’t lift a finger to help anyone they don’t know.
Jane K (Northern California)
We haven’t seen the report yet.
James (US)
@Jane K Releasing the full report won't change the fact that Mueller cleared the Trump campaign of collusion. Trump won and Hillary lost.
Budley (Mcdonald)
I’d say trump’s “collusion delusion” will only be over when he finally releases the Mueller report, his personal and corporate tax returns and his ‘genius’ high school and college transcripts.
Kate Kline May (Berkeley. CA)
Adam Schiff is an honest man in a nest of vipers. He shows us what courage looks like. He was right to call out the trump kakistocracy for its obvious brazen and self serving senate and obscene president. Well done senator. Please keep the pressure to oust the vile swamp things.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
It is glaringly simple really. If Mueller's report is so exculpatory why are Nunes, Jordan and the others fighting tooth and nail not to release it? This is in itself obstruction of justice. It is amazing the extent that Republicans go to cheat in everything. By acting this way they are IMHO conceding guilt. What lengths will they go to to rig the next election? G grand O obstructionist P plutocracy You people really gonna fall for it? What skeletons are they hiding?
SomeGuy (Ohio)
Adam Schiff's response to this collection of Republican liars and weaklings showed courage, leadership, character, and gravitas. ADAM SCHIFF FOR PRESIDENT!
PB (USA)
It amuses me that the Republicans set up Adam Schiff for his response. Their strategy has always been to go on offense, yet they have nothing underlying; no plan once that surface rage is exhausted. They want more rage. That speech by Schiff will resonate. It reminded me of the Howard Beale (Network) "I'm mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore" speech. I can tell you that if somebody asked me today who I would vote for as President, my answer: Adam Schiff.
Dave Wyman (Los Angeles)
The president wouldn't agree to an interview because telling the truth could get him in trouble and lying would, too. Of course neither he nor most Republicans in Congress want the Mueller report made public, because they know it'll paint a very bad portrait of Musso....I mean Trump.
RYR.G (CA)
Of course the Republicans are on the attack, what other strategy is left open to them? This ploy should take the heat off, at least for a few days. from the shot-himself-in-the-foot vunderkinde at the helm for his brilliant idea to try to do away with Obamacare. Besides. it just might drive a wedge into Democratic circles.... and we all know how well Dems handle that kind of situation.
josh (LA)
Mr. Schiff's voice and body language says he's furious. And I think that's great. Keep going Mr. Schiff! As a constituent in your district--you have my vote!
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
The calls for his head are more of the rancorous rot destroying this country. I don't know what's more risible. That or the demands for apologies from the press. Time to call a moratorium on the blithering idiocy this rush to blame the press, democrats, and Mueller embodies. The demands for apologies and heads ring hollow in light of the fact that we do NOT have the Mueller report. We have Barr's, that most partisan of all hacks,* CliffsNotes version of a skimpy book report. This rush to quash an inquiry that was fundamentally, absolutely necessary is just more of the same mindless thrashing about that brought us this quagmire. There was a burning need for this inquiry. No one needs to apologize for it. Truncating it and predicting what we think Mueller said is wrong. The report, in its entirety, belongs in the public domain. When, exactly, did we become this incurious? This afraid of the truth? This morally, ethically, and intellectually lazy? My tax dollars paid for this necessary investigation. I have every right to see it. I have no intention of allowing the GOP, the party of bullies, to silence me or anyone calling for full disclosure. Schiff is a hero, one of the very few in a crowd of craven cowards and crooks. --- * It just doesn't get more partisan than penning an eighteen-page rant about why a sitting president cannot be impeached or indicted when angling for the job that ensures that...wait for it...a president won't be impeached or indicted.
Wolf (Out West)
Schiff is an intelligent ethical experienced patriot, not a treasonous grifter. This vexes the GOP mightily.
SCZ (Indpls)
The GOP stood behind Devin Nunes and they think they can complain about Schiff. Give us all a break. Barr gave Trump a little fig leaf. We are STILL waiting to read Mueller’s report.
Robin (Western NY)
I support Sen.Schiff and applaud his work.
Jim K (coloma)
Thank you Adam Schiff. You've got my support.
Ann (Yonkers, NY)
I don't understand why Devin Nunez is still on the committee. Its horrible to see him there after knowing all of the dirty tricks he played before Adam Schiff was Chairman. And to see him whispering to his Republican colleague on TV tonight as Chairman Schiff was speaking to him and all of his cohorts, just made me angrier and more disgusted with his presence there.
Independent (the South)
If you haven't already, you need to see the complete exchange. The only place I found the complete exchange is this YouTube of a Fox News segment. It sounds like Republicans told Fox to be ready for this so it was live and the Fox person doesn't have much he can say after he sees Schiff's response. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qIyhuTQ9Y4
Once From Rome (Pittsburgh)
Time for Schiff to resign. His conduct has become a national disgrace.
AhBrightWings (Cleveland)
@Once From Rome Really. Would you care to opine about why a man should resign for doing his job? Do be specific. Or have you forgotten that we have three branches of government for the express and intentional reason of providing checks and balances for situations exactly like this?
MB (W D.C.)
Sure, but take DJT with him.
Michael (Maryland)
The sheer hypocrisy of the GOPers is breathtaking. Schiff is an educated smart class act and a patriot. His predecessor was an ignorant devious Trump shill, traipsing about in the late night delivering political intel from the committee to the White House. Nunes was a disgrace to his office and the constitutional duty of a Congressional committee to carry out oversight of the administration. Schiff's litany today of Russian actions and the Trump family's cover up for meeting with Russians -- treason which should have been reported to the FBI -- was terrific. We NEED Adam Schiff. Nunes was a Quisling for Trump.
L. Seurynck (Oregon)
Schiff's response to the accusations by Republican's is the news story today. Let's highlight, read headline, voices of integrity and leadership NYT! Disappointed that his moving demonstration of honor is not the headline today. Listen to it in full before you respond to me please. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6fKbEqurZA

Lest we forget: Bengazi, Bengazi, Bengazi. Stand your ground, Mr. Schiff.
Gloria Ross (St. Louis)
From this day forward, until Trump and his cabal are out of Washington, these four minutes from Adam Schiff should be played at least once daily by every reputable news outlet. Snippets should be played more frequently. I am grateful to Adam Schiff for his words today, and profoundly disgusted with Trump's corrupt sycophants and cohorts who had the audacity to ask for Mr. Schiff's resignation.
GenerationXChick (Indiana)
Schiff has our support
Bob (Hudson Valley)
The Republican Party has now gone so far right that they have nothing left but theatrics such as name calling with McCarthyism when Adam Schiff is clearly trying to dig down and find the truth about the various connections between Trump and Russia. Russia had a bad experience with democracy after the Soviet Union fell and around 2011-2012 Putin turned the country toward fascism when he was again elected as president but this time in a rigged election. It is known that Putin has been greatly influenced by the writings of Russian fascist philosopher Ivan Ilyan who died in the 1950s and current Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin who is proponent of fascism. Republicans now also seem to be turning to embracing fascism in that they support Trump, who speaks like a fascist. But unlike Putin who has a philosophical basis for turning to fascism, Trump doesn't read philosophy or very much else and he seems to simply adopt the might makes right view associated with fascism. As long as Republicans support Trump that have nothing to stand on that resembles American values. All they can do now is pretend.
mikek728 (Las Vegas)
I don't ever again want to hear any GOP representative utter the phrase "my friends across the isle"... After that display today, that phrase has been rendered, especially coming from them, beyond useless. What a shameful demonstration.
Greg (Boston)
Give him a break, please! I’m amazed that my Republican friends are in such an uproar over this, after the craziness of years of partisan investigations of Benghazi.
Mark (Minneapolis)
@Greg The only way to stop people from actually thinking about the big picture of what we know actually did happen is to ramp up the rage to 11.
Tedj (Bklyn)
Bravo Chairman Schiff!
Alan (CT)
You go Mr Schiff, do not back down. Through this whole process you did not lie or exaggerate. Today’s speech said it all. These words should ring loud and clear ... “ I don’t think it’s ok”
M. Callahan (Moline, il)
Who cares about the truth. Republicans never have. The democrats should fight fire with fire and simply pull down Mr. Trump. Their temerity is noted. Resign, Mr. Schiff and let’s get a dog of war in there. Times are desperate.
Chat Cannelle (California)
"But I don’t think it’s O.K. I think it’s immoral. I think it’s unethical. I think it’s unpatriotic. And yes, I think it’s corrupt.” No where in Rep Schiff's quotes does he now say collusion. Well, whatever Trump and his associates did or did not do were not considered to be collusion per AG Barr's summary that directly quotes the Mueller report. Rep Schiff, Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has always explicitly maintained that there was collusion and he has seen the evidence, no doubt. And he is still insisting that there is collusion. If Rep Schiff has some evidence that Mr. Mueller doesn't, where is it? I don't know if Rep Schiff should resign or not, but he needs to explain how he got the collusion so wrong as the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Hopefully this will be addressed when AG Barr testifies. I hope Mr. Mueller gets to testify as well.
Lillies (WA)
@Chat Cannelle You, nor anyone else knows anything about the complete Mueller findings until it is made available to everyone in as un redacted a form as possible.
nomad127 (New York/Bangkok)
@Chat Cannelle There is no reason why Mueller should testify. Barr is at the top of the totem pole at DOJ. Mueller reports to him.
Independent (the South)
As others have said, if the Republicans don't like what Schiff is doing, it means Schiff is doing his job.
Kathy (Oxford)
Republicans must know there's far more in the Mueller report or they'd move on and take the win. This is Diversion Tactic 101. Rep. Schiff is not going to resign, if anyone should it's Mitch McConnell since he's long ago tuned out the American people for his own agenda. All this noise coming from Donald Trump about his enemies list and retribution and attacking Adam Schiff just says there is so much more to come. And they're putting on as many logs as they can to build a huge bonfire to hide the house that's burning.
Alabama (Independent)
When they don't have the law on their side they resort to the age old defense posture of accusing the prosecutor of wrong doing. It's a tactic that the Republicans frequently use in the era of Trump and I'm sure that it will continue to be their fall back position. Is it worthy of this much press? No, it's not. Schiff is not going anywhere. He is going to do his job and keep the nation informed of Trump's crimes. Keeping the nation informed about Trump's crimes is the last thing the Republicans want to happen in an election cycle.
Independent (the South)
Mr. Trump, show us your tax returns. The Special Counsel for Whitewater and Bill Clinton went on for over 4 years at a cost of $100 Million in today's dollars. And what was Whitewater about? Clinton's personal finances before he was president, a real estate deal back in Arkansas. But wait until the Southern District starts investigating the Trump organization for financial crimes before Trump was president. I can hear the howling now. On the other hand, they never found any problems with Clinton's finances. What are the odds of that for Trump?
sashakl (NYC)
Adam Schiff's response to the GOP members is something I hope all of the children in my family will listen to someday when they're old enough.
G (Edison, NJ)
Schiff said publicly on dozens of occasions that he has proof of Trump's collusion with Russia. If so, its time to put up or shut up. Let him ask the FBI to interview him under oath, and show the evidence. Otherwise, it's time to go.
TMSquared (Santa Rosa CA)
The Times is culpable for its mis-framing of this. Republican calls for Schiff's resignation don't "highlight" the chasm between Rs and the rest of the country. The Times is highlighting that chasm, which, as polls show, wasn't really changed by Barr's summary of Mueller's report. There is a vast amount of public information suggesting the guilt of Trump and his associates in conspiring with Russia. Claims by Schiff and others about collusion were only common sense. If Mueller's report shows why and how this information does not support further criminal indictments, then reasonable people have a right to know why common sense inferences turned out to be wrong. This wave of bad-faith indignation from the Republican party and its Fox News toady/accomplices, based entirely on a tiny summary by Trump's own AG, is an angry PR campaign. Shame on the Times for treating it as legitimate.
Chico (New Hampshire)
I think it's time Devon Nunes has a sanity check up at Walter Reed Hospital, something is seriously wrong with his mental state.
Surya (CA)
Republicans have no credibility to preach anyone on ethics, morals, truth or governance. Criminals.
ann (ct)
The Republicans don’t understand a moral, intelligent measured, informed man like Adam Schiff. On the other hand either do the Democrats. He isn’t charismatic enough for them. He is the person I wish would run for President. I have been saying this for months.
sashakl (NYC)
Adam Schiff's reply to the Republican's ridiculous, petty demand for his head was eloquent, powerful and admirable. His rebuttal was entirely factual, honorably delivered and almost Shakespearian. Watching the Republicans, who had only moments before asked for his resignation, listening to him, squirming as he admonished them was more than instructive.
Rocky (Mesa, AZ)
The House Intelligence Committee should announce that if the full Mueller report is not made public, the committee will be forced to continue the investigation, re-interviewing the witnesses Mueller interviewed to get the hidden facts and make them public. All hearings should be in open session. The President should be invited to testify under oath in public, and a subpoena issued if he declines. If the President and Republicans in Congress believe no crimes were committed, the quickest way to put the matter behind the country is to release the Mueller report. If crimes were committed, then the Mueller reported needs to be reported. It is sad that we cannot trust the word or summary of the Attorney General. We used to have Attorneys General who put their legal responsibility first, some who got fired for not following a President's order to themselves obstruct justice. Trump changed things when he fired his last Attorney General and FBI Director. His message is clear, obey the President, no the law or moral tradition or be fired. Further he nominated a new Attorney General who already publicly condemned the special prosecutor's investigation. Obviously Congress must determine the truth if the Mueller report is withheld from the public. Faith in our democratic government is at a low. One way to start rebuilding is to have more transparency - let the public know the truth,
FritzTOF (ny)
Chairman Adam Schiff is an American hero. What has happened to our government is not OK. Those who try to withhold the truth from us can try -- but they will lose. Let the names on the letter to asking the Chairman to resign be published in the NY Times every day. But beyond that, let the names of every member of congress be posted throughout the land - so that once the floods come and people die from the heat, from disease, and from starvation -- History remembers them as the greatest fools of all time. Children -- remember this day well.

Schiff is doing his job. It's a democracy, Trump is surrounded by criminal activity, his businesses are enmeshed in scandal, and the shrillest of the republicans are simply out of ideas and going with what they seem to do best--hyperpartisan nonsense. After the shameless behavior of Devin Nunes, Schiff is supposed to have crossed some line? Can you republicans come back to earth and maybe we can salvage some shred of democracy as long as the thug seems to have weathered this latest--but certainly not last--storm?
JM (San Francisco)
Mr. Schiff, keep your eye on the prize.
RichPFromDC (Washington, DC)
What a disappointment that Will Hurd, ordinarily a rare GOP beacon of intellectual honesty, signed this vapid, made-for-Fox TV. dishonest PR stunt. That's the kind of guy Beto O'Rourke befriends? Yeesh.

What is Republicans' basis for supporting the ethical, immoral, unpatriotic, corrupt nature of the conduct delineated by Rep. Schiff? How do they defend themselves to their electorate?
Lillies (WA)
@M They don't. They simply get Putin to "organize" electoral wins for them. Easy!
Jean HC (NYC)
Couldn't agree more with Adam Schiff - I don't think it's ok what Trump, his family, and his associates have done to compromise our democracy. Shame on the GOP members who are complicit in their silence!
Dundeemundee (Eaglewood)
Not one thing, not one change should happen or even be discussed until congress has had a chance to see the full report. If Barr was not lying, however, the Republicans have a point.
Lillies (WA)
@Dundeemundee We have no idea what Mr. Barr was doing other than an afternoon of interpretive writing. Those 4 pages were "MR. BARR's OPINION". Nothing more. And that is what he was appointed to AG to do in the first place: To cover for Trump.
TPB (Guilford, CT)
Thank you Adam Schiff! I agree. I don’t think it’s OK either.
Yuri Asian (Bay Area)
Republicans have effectively erased the line between political and criminal, which is a slippery slope to fascism. But they also miscalculated the profound disgust the majority of Americans have for Trump's open sewer of corruption, cronyism, cynicism and calcified contempt for America's foundation values. Mueller's report isn't an exoneration. It's a blueprint for other US Attorneys to pursue the plethora of evidence gathered by the Special Prosecutor that was beyond the scope of a severely delimited investigative focus. Schiff should investigate Rep. Nunes and his actions as the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, including being an errand boy for Trump and feeding confidential information to the White House. Trump's brain-frying nightmare is just beginning. Specially with Schiff working the kitchen as a former US Attorney who's an ace prosecutor who knows how to cause nightmares for wrong-doers. PS. I remember reports of an illicit affair between Rep. McCarthy and former North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers, which derailed McCarthy's earlier play for House Speaker. Living in a glass house, McCarthy may want to curb his belligerence and tongue.
Lillies (WA)
@Yuri Asian No one has seen the Mueller report except Wm. Barr. All we have is Mr. Barr's interpretation of reality. We have no facts based on Mueller's work.
Joe From Boston (Massachusetts)
"That has in turn enraged Republicans, who have happily embraced what they call Mr. Mueller’s absolution of Mr. Trump. They say Democrats will stop at nothing to ruin his presidency," I seem to recall Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, famously saying that: "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/when-did-mcconnell-say-he-wanted-to-make-obama-a-one-term-president/2012/09/24/79fd5cd8-0696-11e2-afff-d6c7f20a83bf_blog.html?utm_term=.9f5f4ce51f9f Republicans thought it was ok for Mitch to make that comment on Oct. 23, 2010. Now they get upset when Democrats point to all of the underhanded, dishonorable and effectively criminal acts of Donald Trump and his hangers-on? TOUGH. "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen." I'm talking to you, Republicans.
Mary Ann (Massachusetts)
Adam Schiff made history today. His remarks today will be remembered in history books. I just sent him a contribution. I don't think the amount matters much, but the fact of receiving millions of small donations does matter.
Patricia G (Florida)
Chalk another one up for my adage "When they go low, we go smart." Nancy Pelosi, AOC, and others are fine examples of doing just that. But today, I think Adam Schiff gets the "We Go Smart" award in response to Republicans lowest of low attack on him. The brilliant Schiff smartly and expertly made Republicans squirm in their seats and it was a sight to behold.
Nancy (Somers)
Schiff is dead on correct. It stinks of impropriety. What is the value of the presidency if the bar is so low that any conduct is acceptable so long as it is not capable of being criminally prosecuted?
Kendall Zeigler (Maine)
Why doesn’t the headline say how heroic and clear Mr. Schiff was in the face of those smarmy idiot Republicans? His summation that it’s not ok to support Trump because he is immoral, unethical, corrupt and unpatriotic says it all.
Duncan (Los Angeles)
Schiff did a good job of pushing back. When your campaign chairman and NSA are both going to prison for dirty dealings with Russians maybe it's time to shut your yap.
kevin cummins (denver)
What's behind the GOP members of the House intelligence committee demanding that Schiff step down as Chair? After all we only have the Barr three page letter as "evidence" of Mueller's determination that Trump did not criminally collude with Putin. Wouldn't it be worthwhile for this committee to have full access to the entire 300 page Mueller report before they go overboard proclaiming Trump's innocence and accusing Schiff of McCarthyism? I suspect that the details of this report will describe the repeated contacts between Putin's operatives and Trump staff which apparently Mueller determined did not meet a standard of treason, but let's not speculate, let's have the Committee review all of Mueller's findings. The GOP's overreaction suggests that Trump is running the show, and his faithful GOP members of congress are doing as told. Would they be so vociferous it the full report was made available to the public?
robert lachman (red hook ny)
The Republicans are beyond belief and so is much of the media. House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy uses that old “McCarthyism” trope to attack the Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff while Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama quotes Hitler’s Mein Kampf to decry socialism. Donald Trump’s lawyer in the 80s was Roy Cohn; Sen. Joe McCarthy’s lawyer during the McCarthy hearings in the 1950s. And Hitler’s National Socialism or “Nazi” Party had nothing to do with Socialism except to co-opt the concept in order to crush the Socialist Party in German elections of the period. No one has seen the Mueller Report, yet the four-page Barr summary is enough for many media outlets like Fox (of course) and CNN to declare the Administration exonerated. That report must be devastating or these guys wouldn’t be so nervous about it. What country are we living in, anyway? It’s not America, that’s for sure. Nazi Germany? Soviet Russia? Communist China? It looks more like it every day.
PJZJR (East Meadow, NY)
Three cheers for Adam Schiff. There should be more congressman like Mr. Schiff willing to stand up for morality and what is right for this democracy. His republican counter parts should resign their positions on the committee if they are afraid of the truth. The truth will set us free.
Kodali (VA)
The Republican strategy is to lock-in Barr’s conclusions. But Democrats are becoming spoilers of the Republican celebrations. So, they are angry. That is normal especially if you are guilty. Republicans are caught between rock and hardplace. If they release the entire 300 page plus report, they are afraid the truth will come out and if they don’t they will be blamed for hiding the truth. I can understand the Republican dilemma but I am happy for the situation they are in.
Robin (Pennsylvania)
Thank you, Adam Schiff. Please stand strong and continue your work in the professional way you have been throughout this nightmare.
Andy Panda (New England)
Notice that Republicans are distancing themselves and minimizing the glaring omissions that might indicate there is more to the findings. 300 pages boiled down to 4? The president not compelled to appear in person? The Republicans would seem to have had it their way, all the while Trump was attempting to ridicule the ongoing research and minimizing the players (even though Mueller went out of his way to be fair and objective and also is a lifelong Republican). Chances are, if the committee found a smoking gun and plenty of guilt, the collection methods and conclusions would be questioned. Remember during the debates when Trump considered the fact that he might not beat Hillary? He said only he would decide when and if he would concede if he lost and also whether he would accept the findings of the American people the day after the election.
Jeff Nate (nevada)
Thank you Adam Schiff! Hang in there until the FULL report comes out. And then bring it on.
PaulB67 (Charlotte NC)
This account is accurate but fails to describe Schiff’s obvious but controlled anger directed towards the committee Republicans. It was one of the best examples of dignified indignation that I can recall. Bravo Rep. Schiff. You spoke for a majority of Americans today: the GOP May be ok with political and moral corruption, but not the rest of us.
Nicole (Falls Church)
Mr. Schiff owned the Republicans in the Intelligence Committee with his response. Hearing that list, of the major offenses of the trump administration read out loud, when only one or two of them would bring down any other administration is a wake up to the fact that this president should be in prison, or at least removed from office. Keep up your demands for the full report Mr. Schiff. Four pages of whitewash are not acceptable.
G (California)
Republican lawmakers are doing their constituents a serious disservice. Nuance is disdained in politics but what the House Intelligence committee investigates is too important to be mired in game-playing. Long before Barr shared Mr. Mueller's finding that the Trump campaign did not conspire with the Russian government, we saw that Trump as president has done things that are inexplicably accommodating to the Russian government: - he has met multiple times with Putin with no administration officials present - he seized the notes of an interpreter who attended one of those meetings, and swore that interpreter to secrecy - he shared intelligence obtained from a friendly ally with Russian officials, placing the source of that intel at risk If any past president, even a Republican, had done these things, Republicans would be cowed by shame, and rightly so. Some of them might even have remembered their oath to uphold the Constitution, and called that president out for undermining the nation's security. If Republican lawmakers in the time of Trump recalled their oath, they would cheer Mr. Mueller's no-conspiracy findings -- but they would also remind their constituents that Trump has acted in ways that undermine national security. That would be nuanced and honest. Instead, they act as if Mr. Mueller's sole unambiguous finding cleared Trump of all his misdeeds. Honesty requires acknowledging the bad as well as celebrating the good. Republicans, try honesty.
Randy (Pa)
Congressional Republicans just drove tens of millions of dormant Democrats and Independents to the polls in 2020 to vote against GOP candidates up and down the ballot.
Jimbo (Dover, NJ)
It is high time for Mr. Schiff to release to the public the evidence that he has been talking about for almost two years now that he says proves that President Trump committed treason and colluded with the Russians to win the election. He must have said it publicly over a hundred times. I'm sure he has it some place safe. You do have it, don't you, Mr. Schiff? Mr. Schiff runs the risk of being charged with obstruction of justice if he has not provided this to the Mueller team. If he has provided it then I would have to assume that it didn't amount to much. Much is being made over a 300 page document being reviewed and summarized in two days down to four pages, unnecessarily so. Mr. Mueller may have provided summaries within the document which would have made Mr. Barr's summation take less time. Anyway, the Republican leadership has already agreed to release all of the report they legally can within a few weeks. I can wait.
John Geek (Left Coast)
@Jimbo agreed just like Trump agreed to release his tax returns? gotcha, we're still waiting for that, too....
Lillies (WA)
@Jimbo In case you missed it: The evidence that Mr. Schiff is talking about is most likely in the Mueller report. You make huge assumptions given that you've not seen the report. And why should anyone whose tax dollars have supported Mueller for these past two years, have to wait? Similar reports of this nature have been available to the public and to congress within days--in years long before the speed of our current technology.
Jimbo (Dover, NJ)
@Lillies If it is in the report, being there is no indictment, then it wasn't so damning, as I said.
Jane (San Francisco)
The evolution from the Republican to Trumpian party is complete. The Republicans calling for Adam Schiff's resignation accuse him of what they are guilty themselves. It is perfectly clear to the entire world who is the true public servant. What a bizarre country we have become.
Andy Panda (New England)
I think it is a little suspect and kindof fishy that almost immediately after the results were made public, Trump pronounced himself "vindicated" and innocent and took liberties with what little was released and also decided there was also no collusion or obstruction (even though Barr made it clear no matter what the results were he would likely not find any evidence of obstruction). Trump seemed to be taking a victory lap after he was "exonerated" and he has begun his MAGA rallies, playing to his fans and stirring up his core believers and followers.
Andy S (Los Angeles)
Pure political theater on the part of Republicans. They know Schiff won't resign. Like Trump, they are talking tough and playing to their base. In this case, they are also currying favor with Trump. All their protests are made for Fox News. Republicans may be many things, but one thing they are is ruthless and disciplined. I'm happy to see Democrats taking a cue from their playbook and fighting back accordingly.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
One of the finest speeches I have heard over the last several years is that of Adam Schiff's today. There is democracy personified from the soul of this fine congressman. No other explanation need be said, no more arguments. And he clearly states that he honors Mr. Mueller's final report and praises this leader of the Special Counsel. But item by item Schiff listed the actual facts which have been proven and revealed in the most direct terms, i.e., the maneuvering and manipulations of the Trump campaign, including Kushner and Don, Jr., all of which was in sync, deliberate or not, with Russia. I find it ironic that my state can produce the intelligent, wise, and ethical Adam Schiff, while simultaneously reelecting Mr. Nunes, truly the most corrupt of CA's representatives.
JCX (Reality,USA)
Adam Schiff is one of the rising stars of the Democratic party. I say this as a non- partisan who deplores Trump, Republicans and their deplorable base.
DK (Boston)
Adam Schiff is a man of backbone and integrity who deserves the gratitude of all honest citizens. His eloquent monologue should be framed and hung on the wall of every classroom and courtroom in America, so we can again embrace the truth in our country.
A Nobody (Nowhere)
R's think whenever they pull a Kavanaugh, and go all red in the face and scowl and spit and yell, everyone is supposed to care. But R's don't care about anyone. R's just go ahead and exercise raw political power whenever they can. It's how they passed a major tax bill in December of 2017 without holding a single hearing. Not one. It's how they foisted Kavanaugh - who demonstrated the temperament of a 4 year-old - onto the next two generations of Americans. And yet, now that they are in the minority in the House, the R's demand to be heard! They demand to decide who will chair House committees! They're yelling and being incorrigible! So everyone needs to care! Right now! (Yawn.) November 3, 2020 can't come soon enough.

Adam Schiff is the voice of sanity. This is a case of "the emperor has no clothes" and Adam Schiff is our voice in exposing the fraud that is Trump.
Itsonlyme (A Rational Place)
Mr. Schiff, the Republicans’ vitriol only goes to prove that you are doing a very fine job in the performance of your duties. The attacks from the party compromised by the Russians will continue and that does not surprise me. Hang in there and continue to protect our dearly beloved democracy. We stand behind you.
Mary Ann (Massachusetts)

Senator Schiff - You are right. Stay strong...

And the same thunderous clatter against Trey Gowdy, et al. was heard from the GOP when the Benghazi investigation finally concluded. Oh, that's right. Maybe not. There was more than enough circumstantial evidence to justify this investigation. Let's not let that get in the way of good old GOP hypocrisy.
Wasatch Reader (Salt Lake City)
Schiff should know there are folks like me out here who don't need a Mueller report to know this president and his posse of lackeys and close relatives have failed the smell test over and over. I don't need a federal case, but knowing the details of the Mueller report will probably eduate the rest of us on the difference between doing wrong and committing a crime.
Yuri Pelham (Bronx, NY)
So if I were Schiff I would say, " I recognize that our government is a fascist dictatorship. This appears to be what Americans prefer so with honor and respect to our leader I will resign from Congress effective immediately. I defer to President Trump and his Republican cohort. I tried and failed to bring truth and justice to our citizens. Perhaps another will be more effective. My motto is "Be a leader, be a follower, or get out of the way."
Nemesisofhubris (timbuktu)
Mr. Schiff, we applaud you. Your "Not Ok" speech was intelligent, factual and powerful. You have put those Republican attack dogs back in their place with their tails between their legs. As Nancy Pelosi so cleverly put it, they are just "scaredy cats that don't know what to do". Thank you for your most dignified service as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee
Michael Michael (Callifornia)
trump tells a lie that "the Russia hoax (sic) is finally dead". There has been ample evidence, via indictments, and even acknowledged in the Barr coverup letter, that Russian entities tried to intervene into our election.

Mr. Schiff-Please continue in the professional manner that you have been to continue to point out the unethical and criminal behaviors of Mr. Trump and his gang. You sir, have a back bone and I wish more people would stand up and speak with such sincerity.
Chris Hunter (WA State)
Adam Schiff is a hundred times the man that Trump will ever be. And as for McCarthy and Nunes: step up boys, the dustbin of history awaits.
PEA (Los Angeles, CA)
Schiff used to be my congressman before the boundaries changed. I was very proud of what he said today and I hope his words are repeated and repeated in the media. Because of these ridiculous attacks on him by corrupt DJT and his GOP cultists, I will be sending Schiff a donation tonight! Keep up the good work, Adam. And to the GOP committee members: you reveal yourselves to be as corrupt and despicable as your dear leader who wants to be king.
Doug Lowenthal (Nevada)
Blow hard as he might, Trump has zero power over Schiff. The bully is still a’scared.
QueCosa (Desert North Of Phoenix)
Just like FDR, Adam Schiff should "welcome their hatred."
msprinker (chicago)
Amazing. The red-baiters calling Schiff a red-baiter. It seems that these Rs can't speak more than a few sentences without calling a Dem a "socialist" or a "communist" and now they're finding McCarthy under the table? I'm only surprised that their heads aren't spinning and smoke coming out their ears like in Austin Powers....
Tankylosaur (Princeton)
Hooray for Schiff! Trump needs jail time and/or deportation - and so do the treasonous enablers in the GOP. Lock Them Up!
Susan (Home)
NYTs should have posted Schiff's full response. It was magnificent.
Pat (Ohio)
Congratulations to Adam Schiff for giving one of the most important and memorable speeches in support of the integrity of our democracy during these troubled times. You are a true American hero.
Naples (Avalon CA)
I just want to thank Adam Schiff. Just. Thank you. So much. I contributed. Much admiration and gratitude.
Joel Geier (Oregon)
This president attacks most those whom he fears most. He's afraid that Rep. Adam Schiff might use his position as chair of the House Intelligence Committee to a carry out a full inquiry into the contents of the Mueller report. Mueller's findings do include evidence of interference by Vladimir Putin's government into the 2016 election. There are already multiple convictions of, and guilty pleas by, Americanswho were part of the Trump campaign. A dozen or so Russian nationals are also under indictment. Certainly it's within the responsibility of Schiff's committee to hear the details, and to follow up if there are indications of actions that are not necessarily prosecutable as crimes, but indicate a continuing threat to our election system.
expat (Japan)
Have any of the people claiming "exoneration" been given access to the entire 300 page version of the report, much less read it? If not, aren't the GOP basing their opinions on about 1% of the entire report, as filtered through an AG appointed by the person who was the focus of the investigation?
Lillies (WA)
@expat In the 4 page creative writing project proffered by Wm. Barr, there was a line from Mr. Mueller explicitly saying Trump was NOT exonerated.
Neil (Texas)
Well, it is called politics - an intramural sports played inside the halls of Congress. I am a Republican and this California representative deserves everything he got plus some more. And as expected, he stood his ground. But it's good that unlike what's happening in Britain - our folks are getting stuff done and not be paralyzed. As to Russian mischief - I think we sell ourselves short by thinking that a 2 bit dictator can destabilize our country. If nothing else was proven in Mueller - it was abundantly clear that a political party and its operatives took a sizable bite of the poisoned apple of a dossier too hastily. So, the lesson going forward is when another dossier or any other thing that comes from overseas including an ex British intelligence - folks should remember Mueller. And make it public as soon as possible. All in all, time to move on.
Martin (California)
We underestimate Putin at our peril. He has already achieved destabilization of parts of Europe and the Middle East and is well on his way to sow division in America.
Jane (San Francisco)
@Neil I recommend carefully listening to Adam Schiff's response to the Republicans' demand that he resign. Clear your mind, rid yourself of preconceptions, and listen to every single word from start to finish. This man is a gift to Americans and we should be grateful for his public service.
Lillies (WA)
@Martin Correct: I live between the US and the EU. It is important for Americans to understand this. We are not immune to Putin's interference. He doesn't have the money for an overt war but he can certainly successfully conduct a covert one The EU in particular knows Putin well as a former leader of the KGB. There was a shudder across Europe when he was "elected".
Bob (Hudson Valley)
It seems much more likely that Trump is controlled by Russia than he is colluding with Russia although both may be true. The fate of Trump's business seems to be in the hands of Russia. He needs Russia to borrow money and many of the apartments in Trump's real estate empire have been bought by Russians including in Trump Tower in NYC. Trump was a failed businessman until Russia created the fiction that Trump is a successful businessman. It is speculated that Russia did that as a long shot that Trump could become president of the US. Everything seemed to fall in place for Russians and what seemed like a completely crazy idea actually materialized. Russia also played a big role in getting support for the Brexit vote. One thing that seems hard to deny is the Russians are on a roll. They are supporting white nationalist movements in Europe and are make progress with that to. It is hard to see who is left but the Democratic Party to try to stop this with regard to the US. Adam Schiff should be strongly supported. That type of work he is doing is critical to limit the damage being done to liberal democracies by the Russians.
Robert Fallon (Boston)
how could it be widening. The behavior of the GOP when they were in power showed there was nothing that they would stoop to in order to protect Trump and exclude democrats. So now that the Democrats are in power, they are trying to do the same thing. Same old same old
Bill (Madison, Ct)
Schiff hasn't done anything as bad as Nunes. We still haven't seen the report but we do know collusion happened. We all saw it and heard it. The republicans are going to have to choose between trump and the country. Unfortunately, they seem to have chosen loyalty to trump over the country.
Ted (NY)
Rep Schiff was undaunted and unrattled by Kevin McCartht’s/ Davin Nunes’ band of Putinistas. The hearing was revelatory and managed without fear or favor. If as reported, the Moeller report is several hundred pages long, a four page Barr ambiguously drafted four page memo won’t do it. We need to see the full report.
S (NJ)
The house intelligence committee can get access to a lot of information in the Mueller report, without as much as a struggle other Democrat lead house committees. Schiff as minority leader, was very skilled at exposing Nunes many efforts to sabotage the investigation. Now as Head of a very powerful committee he can use his skills to uncover the truth and make it accessible to the public. Of course they want to get rid of Schiff.
Dr. D. (Manhattan)
After watching Chairman Schiff's "it's not O.K." speech, I called his office (818-450-2900) to thank and congratulate him, and to ask that he keep on track with the Committee's investigation. What a breath of fresh air! I hope more Democrats follow his lead. Republicans abdication of their sworn duty to uphold the Constitution is mind-boggling although no longer 'beyond belief'.
jlcsarasota (Sarasota FL)
The last people who should accuse anyone else of partisan politics are Nunes and trump. They showed us they put party over country for each 730+ days that gop controlled the house.
Just Curious (Oregon)
I was already a huge fan of Adam Schiff. Seeing him pushed to reveal his “fire in the belly” just adds to my awe. He is one of the greatest Americans ever. A brilliant combination of high intelligence, calm composure, dedication, honesty, hard work and a moral compass second to none. Donate to him, as a way of voting between elections, especially at this critical juncture.
Javaforce (California)
I think Adam Shiff’s excellent and forceful speech may be a turning point in this mess. Who knows what the Republicans in the committee were thinking. How can GOP members of Congress be so craven and did they think Schiff would just fold?
John H. (New York)
"That has in turn enraged Republicans" All we know is that they are acting enraged. The Republicans are cynical to the core. They don't have much in the way of principles. They just think that acting angry is their best strategy at the moment.
HFScott (FL)
The Intelligenc Committee under Republican control with Republican Devin Nunes as Chairman was nothing more than a rubber stamp of, and propaganda foil for Trump. It, like the entire Republican controlled House of Representatives and every other Republican controlled House committee, and like the Republican controlled Senate and every Republican controlled Senate committee had no "integrity" to damage after the first two years of Trump's presidency. The Republicans only accomplishments in the House and Senate were total servitude to and complicity with Trump in undoing fifty years of societal progress. The Republicans' demand that Schiff resign is right out of Capter One of the Republcan playbook. Raise an indignant outcry over, and accuse Democrats of the very conduct Republicans have been guilty of, demand accountability by the Democrats, and watch the media talk ad nauseam about the alleged Democratic actions, with little if any discussion of how and why the accusation is actually true of the Republicans. A double win for the Republicans. Kudos to Schiff for telling them to stuff it.
UlliPo (Albany NY)
Love Adam Schiff a truly ethical man and calm and cool under pressure...wish you were running for president Mr. Schiff you would so have my vote. You know the constitution, you seek to protect and preserve it and to honor the country.
DLNYC (New York)
The misbehavior of all of these Congressional Republicans is just further proof that Donald Trump is not an aberration, but the logical conclusion in the Reagan - Bush - Trump evolution of their increasingly extremist political party determined to undermine basic democratic values. When Trump's con is hopefully exposed, and their participation in this scam is evident -- in a just and sensible world -- they would suffer scorn from their supporters. But in the last election, we just recently saw these GOP reps all claim they are in favor of protection from insurance suspension for people with pre-existing conditions. Shamelessly. And they're still trying to take it away. Likewise, those white working-class Reagan Democrats, who lament the economic devastation that the Reagan revolution brought to them, fully support Trump and McConnell, mostly because they feel bitter and disappointed that the Democrats failed to adequately fight these Republican policies. So thanks for reporting on their mischievous activities attempting to shut down logical and just inquiries. But heads-up. Don't expect that they will pay a price for it.
Vail (California)
Schiff is the only person I would consider voting for the position of President given his demeanor, intelligence, honesty and is the perfect age. We don't need a too old Biden with his Anita Hill baggage or a too young and inexperienced skateboarding Beto O'Rourke. Time for somebody with maturity and energy that is a direct opposite of what we have now. All the other Democratic candidates are second rate and do not measure up to him. I have been watching him for the last 2 years and I am now more impressed with him than ever.
loveman0 (sf)
There is no question that Trump, at the least, has been compromised by the Russians. Even a business deal, which is illegal under the emoluments clause, would have seemed like a cover for this. The Republicans either admire him for being a crook or support him because he has gotten them what they want--a payoff to their biggest post FEC vs United contributors. That he attacks the poor at every turn, which in deep red states is aimed at non-whites, also has been their basic strategy. Mr. Shiff has been right on the money all along, upholding the law, trying to get the facts against constant Republican opposition. Mr. Nunes in his partisanship has become a Trumpian crook.
M.R. Adams (NYC)
I just saw the footage and Only wish others had the courage to Speak out as Schiff has. I have not felt that level of respect for a politician in a long while. If only others would follow.
J (Denver)
Republicans are complicit in the Russia mess. This is all a smoke screen to cover for the fact that an accurate and transparent investigation of Russia will implicate top republican leaders. Because they knew about Trump and Russia before we even did. Kevin McCarthy, the strong arm quoted in this article swore to God that he thought Trump was bought by Russia long before he gave Trump his nomination. It's public record and their protest of this investigation is intrinsically disingenuous if you've paid attention for more than one minute through all of this. If you consider for one minute that they knew facts about Russia back then, it would explain every action and reaction they've had or taken since.
Will Hogan (USA)
Mueller absolved Trump only in Barr's words. We will not know the details until the whole report is released to Congress. Besides, illegal collusion is only one aspect, the fact remains that the Russians had massive interference and Trump barely won, so they elected Trump, he encouraged them to hack and they illegally hacked, he had active Moscow real estate negotiations far into the campaign and lied about them, Trump broke campaign finance rules by paying off Daniels for the affair, and he can only be trusted under oath, which he never is. What part of the above is wrong?
PB (Northern UT)
Every time I hear Adam Schiff explain what is going on, I am more impressed. He is intelligent, cogent when he talks, professional, and informed--the very opposite of the disgraceful Mr. Nunes, with total lack of integrity, clownish behavior, and his cut-and-paste memos. Nunes made a mockery out of the committee when he was chair. The lowest form of argument is ad hominem attacks, and those who engage in such low-level behavior are demeaning and degrading themselves, their party, and our country. It's pretty clear Trump and the Republicans are scared of Mr. Schiff, so I hope Adam Schiff wears these attacks as a badge of honor and a sign of his ability and power. Schiff has been one of the few Democrats who has stood up effectively against the Trump regime and will not be cowed. I wish more Democrats had such intelligence, spine, and courage.
CA Meyer (Montclair NJ)
The more the Republicans carry on about Schiff, the more I think he’s on to something.
Woosa09 (Glendale AZ. USA)
Mr. Schiff, stick to your principles. They have no shame. The GOP Majority in the previous Congress did nothing but run interference and put party before country. Now when they are all about to be exposed by the upcoming release of the Mueller Report with details of what actually happened the last couple years of this administration, they are running scared. I salute you Adam Schiff and God speed to the true facts of the Mueller Report wherever they made lead. Release the report immediately to Congress and the American people! Your continued tardiness is drawing suspicion of what you are afraid is in its contents. Excellent hearing today on how Russia is still attacking our democracy. Long overdue in my opinion. You all swore to protect our great nation. Get to WORK! Thank-you
Conner (Oregon)
Thank goodness for Adam Schiff. The Republicans on your committee should be ashamed of themselves. I hope that the truth comes out to all Americans, and everyone of them will need to apologize. Whoops, I forgot that Trump Republicans follow their master and never apologize.
Blue skies (My town)
Press on, Adam Schiff. I believe in your integrity and your love for our democracy. Your moral compass is right, and you will be a huge part of our nation surviving Trump. Godspeed to you.
BWS (Canberra Australia)
Every Republican member of the House Intelligence Committee should be REQUIRED to answer each of the "You may think it's OK" points that Adam Schiff made before the committee. If they answer "Yes, it's OK" to any one of them then they are, as he alleges, immoral and unethical, and traitors to your country. By the sheepish way in which they comported themselves during his address, they know exactly who they are and what they have done. If these men are the leaders of your country, God help the United States!
Just Curious (Oregon)
We need to put our money where our mouths are, and show support by donating to Schiff, via Act Blue, or directly.
Dan (Mich.)
Here’s just another report that gives pause about what are the foreign policy motives of this administration. It appears to be so many quid pro quos that I encourage the continuing investigation. “The Trump administration has kept secret seven authorizations it has issued since November 2017 allowing U.S. nuclear energy companies to share sensitive technological information with Saudi Arabia, even though the kingdom has not yet agreed to anti-proliferation terms required to construct a pair of U.S.-designed civilian nuclear power plants.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-administration-authorized-nuclear-energy-companies-to-share-technological-information-with-saudi-arabia/2019/03/28/1b5f0816-5180-11e9-8d28-f5149e5a2fda_story.html
MCV207 (San Francisco)
Adam Schiff has applied his prosecutorial demeanor in a very professional manner as both ranking member and committee chair. The same can't be said for his predecessor and current ranking member Devin Nunes, that clueless cowhand caught holding a bag of fake evidence after his not-so-stealth ricochet trip to and from the White House drive-up felony window. Trey "everything is SO serious" Gowdy, Jim "no jacket" Jordan, Jason "I can't support Trump...oh, wait" Chafitz, Paul "I saved the country" Ryan and some of the other Republican House cartoon characters of the last few years are all deserving of similar hack partisan disdain. But resign? Who ever asked any of these clowns to resign after the hundredth hour of the third Bengazi hearing? Or after the 50th vote to Repeal and Replace? It's all a reality show, with Trump as the circus ringmaster for all the clowns. Where's a hungry lion when you need him?
precipice (Washington)
Mr Schiff is smart as a whip, dogged and right. An ethical man. Trump knows this too, and is afraid of him. My dream for some time has been a Schiff/Swallwell 2020 ticket. I'm a woman and I'm fine with that. These are two of the sharpest minds in Congress, decent humans, so smart and in their prime. What a team!
Mike T (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
@precipice Trump and his handlers would never agree to his participating in a televised debate with a presidential candidate Adam Schiff because it would be a massacre. But it is fun to imagine.
Sheriff of Nottingham (Spring City, PA)
Schiff should have asked that anyone on the panel that thought his list of Trump transgressions “was ok” should resign immediately.
bobj (omaha, nebraska)
I so tire at how the Democrats refuse to give up on their vengeful political assassination of President Trump. It's over and time to move on. Facts as Mueller gave won't change the truth.
Lillies (WA)
@bobj Well, I hope a fascist state is not too tiring for you.
Kurtis E (San Francisco, CA)
Naturally Republicans are completely okay if Trump goes on the attack and tries to undermine people, but they're sure quick to play the victim card when it's one of their own.
Devin Nunes's Mom (Shafter, CA)
Assume that everything that comes out of the Republicans' mouths is said in bad faith. Everything.
Raydeohed (WA)
Oh...this is rich by the Republicans. Do we need to remind them that NOBODY but Trump's henchman Barr has seen the Mueller report? I, like the majority of Americans want to see the report and Republicans can go get you know what. Keep doing the people's work Chairman Schiff. We the people are behind you and demand to know the truth!
Dr. B (Berkeley, CA)
If anyone should resign it should be the complete Trump administration. The Republicans continue to follow a bullying, incompetent leader and continue the bullying themselves dragging the country deeper into turmoil.
Lisa (NY)
Kevin McCarthy compared Adam Schiff to Joseph McCarthy who stoked fires of fear that communists were infiltrating our country. Meanwhile Kevin McCarthy ignores the direct comparison of Trump to Joseph McCarthy when it come to immigrants and Muslims. We are in crazy-town!
mancuroc (rochester)
@Lisa The people who rule Russia are not just direct heirs of the Soviets, a good many of them were part of the Soviet apparatus. Their foreign policy goals are the same, interrupted only for a few brief years during and following the Gorbachev era. So the irony here is that the party that that used to be the fiercest of cold warriors now thinks that obeisance and catering to Putin & Co. is OK. Too bad that the Republicans themselves are ironically challenged. 22:10 EDT, 3/28
Bob (Colorado Springs)
If “lying” is grounds for dismissal, we would see an exodus from Washington, led by Mr. Trump
Jane (San Francisco)
The Republican take no prisoners demand is baffling. Don’t they realize how hypocritical they are? Adam Schiff’s response states the facts and I am so grateful that an experienced prosecutor remains focused on finding the truth. Don’t they realize that our president has no credibility and tieing their political careers to this administration is foolish? Thank goodness for Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi. It is a relief to hear intelligent voices in Washington.
Carl Pop (Michigan)
God bless Adam Schiff and all honest people searching for truth and justice in this era of Republican lies and cruelty. When will evangelicals renounce the party of evil.
DCBinNYC (The Big Apple)

I’m an Independent but no fan of using the ad hominem “doughy-faced demeanor” to describe Adam Schiff.
Vickie (Los Angeles)
My congressman, go Adam !!!
Will Hogan (USA)
Trump can only be trusted under oath. His stooge Attorney General must release the entire report to all of Congress. Else we do not know what was found. Fact remains that collusion is not the only misdeed. Recall that Trump called publicly on the Russians to hack Hillary's emails, and the Russians immediately and illegally hacked Dem emails then sent to WikiLeaks, of which Trump was told before the release. This seems to be illegal or at least immoral. Trump lied about paying off his two prostitutes Daniels and McDougal, and the payoff violated campaign finance laws. These Republicans on the Committee cannot be indignant against Trumps accusers in this kind of setting. The Republicans are spouting utter nonsense.
Byter (AZ)

Peter Squitieri (Wilton Crest)
@Will Hogan I think Trump's attorneys concluded that he couldn't be trusted under oath didn't they?

Toms Quill (Monticello)
The more aggressively the Trump henchmen attack you, the closer you are to the truth. “You might think that it’s O.K. that the president’s son-in-law sought to establish a secret back channel of communications with the Russians through a Russian diplomatic facility. I don’t think that’s O.K. You might think it’s O.K. that an associate of the president made direct contact with the G.R.U. through Guccifer 2.0 and WikiLeaks; that is considered a hostile intelligence agency,” Mr. Schiff said, referring to Russian military intelligence and a Russian intelligence hacker. He continued: “You might think that it’s O.K. that the national security-designate secretly conferred with the Russian ambassador about undermining U.S. sanctions. And you might think it’s O.K. he lied about it to the F.B.I. You might say that’s all O.K. You might say that’s just what you need to do to win. But I don’t think it’s O.K. I think it’s immoral. I think it’s unethical. I think it’s unpatriotic. And yes, I think it’s corrupt.”
Walt (WI)
Adam Schiff is one tough nerd and these Republicans, too many of them apparently intellectually to the south of Mortimer Snerd, are right to be terrified of him. They try to mask their incompetence by reading words written for them by staffers, but the fellow who read the letter sounded like he didn't quite understand all the word.
GT (NYC)
Except: He said he had proof ..many times. He stood in front of the American electorate and said "I have proof" Where is it ? Sorry ... I can never trust him.. Same with Blumenthal

After 4 pages distilled from -- 200/300? and the issue of collusion 'resolved' the republicans need to believe it's 'over' and break out the booze - sorry guys, it's merely 'the end of the beginning' ... wow ! - Schiff = McCarthy ? ... Perhaps, blinded by desperation and addicted to pleasing 'the 35%' the repubs have lost any semblance of honor and respect for facts ... They've given up on presenting an alternate to Trump ... We saw them heading this way after Obama's election ... Never criticizing the tea party for blatant racism ... 'you lie' ... 'armed and dangerous' ... 'food stamp president' ... birther issue ... Not one of them resisted this 'impulse' - need those votes And 8 years later, no healthcare ... They should apologize to their supporters, By the 2020 election Trump will complete the process begun during the republican primaries, exposing the party as weak, subservient, afraid of truth ... Schiff stood tall today, relying on --- God forbid; the facts ! And Pelosi eloquently and passionately stated the issue. The republicans will not budge. They are 'all in' - sad
Nuria (New Orleans)
This move is the very definition of bad faith. These disgraceful Republican cowards don't want to confront the fact that Donald J. Trump is a shady character. Or there is something that they're all hiding in their own dealings with Russia.....
New Yorker (New York)
What does Nunes’ cow think of this?
Raj Sinha (Princeton)
GOP Congressman McCarthy’s irresponsible and fawning sycophancy to Trump is disgustingly nauseating. With his heightened degree of obsequiousnes to Trump, McCarthy has lost his sense of proportion. His attempt to characterize Congressman Schiff’s actions as “McCarthyism” is just shamelessly spineless. Moreover, as an United States Congressman, he should be ashamed of himself for trying to sabotage Congressman Schiff’s perfectly legal congressional duties by willfully conflating it with the extremely divisive “McCarthyism” rhetoric - which was undoubtedly a dark period in our national history. By totally abandoning all sense of probity and comity, GOP’s new “Raison d’etre” is to adopt the ingratiatingly unctuous legislative strategy of “Party over Country” - thanks to Messrs. Kevin McCarthy, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham et al. This is definitely the Ne Plus Ultra of unethical partisanship. Revoltingly repugnant indeed!
Lars (Hamburg, Germany)
“Russia, if you’re listening .....” Nope, no collusion ......
Asuwish (Ma)
It’s not about who you like or which party your in. It’s about the process. While he maybe right in his assumptions , Schiff is head of an intelligence committee. That role by design requires public decorum, equanimity and respect for your own special council—regardless of what one feels about Trump, his behavior or the direction of you own investigation. Defending by professing moral high ground was a bit rich but understandable under the circumstances. But, I’m afraid his specific behavior is not different than any republican— just a different side. Otherwise it was a well written and interesting article.
Lillies (WA)
@Asuwish If you are not able to discern the difference between what Adam Schiff is saying and what the Republicans are saying, then you truly are not paying attention to anything of substance.
JDStebley (Portola CA/Nyiregyhaza)

We need the strength shown by Adam Schiff. We need strength in the Senate in general poised to defend the truth. We need the clarity of Adam Schiff. We need clarity in description of events, intentions, and layers of seriousness in this whole business.
James Mignola (New Jersey)
Well, it may be partisan of me or patriotic but I would suggest that the people who should really resign are trump and nunes among many many others However, those two were both elected (sort of in the case of trump) as was Adam Schiff. If elections matter than it is up to the people of California in Congressman Schiff's district to decide whether he should continue to serve in congress not little trump or even smaller nunes.
Jill Friedman (Hanapepe, HI)
Donald Trump's demands that Adam Shiff resign are yet another example of his attempts to exceed his powers and cross the line in the separation of powers. The President has no right to control or even comment on who gets to serve in the Congress or to give orders to legislators. The Representative was elected by the people in his district to represent them. He's working for them, not for Trump. And if Mueller's report actually exonerated Trump, he and his Republican supporters and his Administration wouldn't be so reluctant to release it and Senate Republicans wouldn't be blocking a vote on the resolution for its release that was passed by the House. Barr's summary clearly stated that the report does not exonerate Trump, which explains why Republicans are so desparately attempting to keep it secret.
Dana (NY)
Look for the misdirection: Saudi Arabia was quietly gifted with essential nuclear facility information under the table, as in, without internationally agreed upon limitations and overdight. Nuclear winter anyone? Son-in-law, near bankrupt real estate debtor Mr. Kushner pulled off the under the radar deal with our cooperative Energy Department. A Reuters report. Not in the Times. Why? Perhaps fuss and bother over the obvious chop job by Mr Barr is another dust in the eyes maneuver? Pay attention while the wealth, safety and sanity of the United States is sold out from under us.

Has Mr. Schiff presented his evidence to the DOJ/FBI. I may be mistaken but I believe that he has said that he has evidence that proves that Trump and his people colluded with Russia. If he has this evidence we could end Trump’s presidency.
Jude Parker (Chicago, IL)
The convictions of Trump’s campaign employees is evidence. The evidence of more than 100 contacts with Russians by Members of the Trump campaign is evidence. Clearly not compelling enough to make a case for criminal conspiracy. So say what you want but the facts won’t change.

CCN (WA State)

Margaret B (Georgia)
How heartening it was to hear Adam Schiff’s response to the Republicans’ assault on him. In the ugly era of Trumpism, it’s so refreshing to see Mr. Schiff take a stand for truth, integrity and decency. This country desperately needs more “Adam Schiffs” in Congress.

Donald Trump should resign. He keeps appointing people who lie. If he was a manager in a company his leadership would be called to question. Schiff speaks truth to power.
LindaP (Ithaca)
"I have met my enemy and he is ours" means that today the party of Trump has demoralized and sacrificed its ethical values for a president who betrays the very position he holds. To see Kevin McCarthy and Devin Nunes next to Adam Schiff in today's proceedings show an indelible line in the sand, between good and evil. Adam Schiff is a decent, intelligent, compassionate Senator. I am truly sorry for what he has to bear in these dark days of political strife. The GOP has no shame or moral compass.
alan (Fernandina Beach)

Really? So now we’re calling for the punishment of congressmen for performing their oversight role? Has anyone resigned over Benghazi? As always in the their Party's "new normal", every sitting Republican member of congress knows that they have an audience of one: Individual 1. They will follow the lead of the man who is the head of their party, who holds them hostage with the power of his Twitter account, who demands that they debase themselves in his name while enthusiastically neglecting their duties under the Constitution to which they swore an oath. There is no accusation too slimy for them to fling, no norm of their office too important to break, no ethical or moral bar under which they will not crawl like vipers. Representative Schiff is a true patriot who is doing some of the most important work a member of Congress can do, in a professional manner that reflects his years of public service. Plus his response to his Republican antagonists was a total scorch. Stay steady, Congressman, and thank you.
nickgregor (Philadelphia)
Schiff should resign, and I'm a Democrat. He makes the left look bad, with his self-promoting delusions. He undermined the FBI investigation, willfully misled the media for 2 years, who in turn misled this country for 2 years. He promoted an environment of fear and hostility and paranoia. I was a Bernie/Clinton voter, and because I did not believe in the Russia farce, I was attacked by an angry mob of radical Clintonites screaming Russia--precisely because people like Adam Schiff created an unnecessary environment of paranoia. The Republicans are right in making the comparison to McCarthyism. This is not what the Democratic Party is about. We are not the party that stokes fear and international incidents. That is the Republican brand. How can we take the high-road when we have guys like Adam Schiff and Tom Steyer running around promoting fictional conspiracy theories. At the very least, Adam Schiff should not have sensitive National Intelligence in his hands at any time. He clearly leaks information whether it be true or untrue. He has obvious relationships with the media, and he used those relationships to negatively impact this country and besmirch the public's trust in the Media. He should resign. What he did is indefensible, and as Democrats we should stop defending the indefensible and go back to our bread and butter issues---justice--and it's hard to be the party of justice when we defend those who perpatrate injustice so enthusiastically.
JDStebley (Portola CA/Nyiregyhaza)
@nickgregor I'msorry, Mr. Gregor - you haven't been paying attention or listening to Mr. Schiff. I've heard all of his colleagues at length; he speaks truth to power and is far more conscientious about the state of government than almost anyone on the right side of the chamber. He stands unashamedly for the rule of law, for the responsibilities of his committee and for the safety of our democracy. Compared to his predecessor who showed no conscience in his ruthless efforts to stop any investigations into our lying president, Schiff at least pays close attention to the questionable if not immoral behavior in the executive branch. That's his duty. He is not promoting conspiracy theories; he is investigating them. And what relationships with the media?? You're not comparing his occasional interviews on most every network with those we see regurgitated by administration officials and Republicans on Fox, are you? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
DD (Baltimore)
Love you, Adam Schiff! Prevail.
David (Brisbane)
@DD Lies and fabrications cannot prevail. That would be a really sad and pathetic world where it could happen.
Bruth (Los Angeles)
While Schiff may not measure up to his predecessor Devin Nunez, he does have brains and integrity going for him.
Kelly (Boston)
Bravo Adam Schiff stand strong!!!!
zighi (Sonoma, CA)
The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence fallacy seems to pervade what's left of Republican consciousness. Geez, it's in a first semester philosophy course!
Donna (Georgia)
If only Schiff and Pelosi could really run Congress, we could get our democracy back.
Greenfish (New Jersey)
My disdain for the GOP keeps growing and growing. Their juvenile, absurd tactics should belie any claims of equivalency between the 2 parties. They are not the same. Did anyone in the Democratic Party ask Nunes, Gowdy or Chafetz to resign because of their endless investigations of Hillary Clinton that yielded not a single indictment? I can only pray that the adults will come back and take back to our government.
XXX (Somewhere in the U.S.A.)
Schiff should hold firm, and he will.
Thomas A. Hall (Florida)
The comments lauding Rep. Schiff and denouncing President Trump and Republicans are very entertaining. I assume that Mr. Mueller's report will be forthcoming soon. I fear that the New York Times' subscriber base will shrink noticeably when there is no further hope to cling to that President Trump colluded with Russians or obstructed justice. On the other hand, morticians may appreciate the increase in suicides by despondent Democrats. Regardless of how one feels about this sorry episode, it is a fact that Rep. Schiff called the president a traitor long before the Mueller report was complete and without evidence of same. A century ago, he would have been roundly condemned for this calumny. Now, he is lauded by Democrats without any more honor than the president they despise. We live in interesting times indeed...
JDStebley (Portola CA/Nyiregyhaza)
@Thomas A. Hall President Trump is a traitor. If not the Russians, his collusion with money and power makes him an enemy of the people.
CD (NYC)
@Thomas A. Hall You don't seem to get it. The Mueller report had nothing do with anything Schiff spoke about tonight. He described other, real events. Information which may or may not be on theMueller report, and that doesn't matter. These items might not be enough in a court of law, but together they reveal a true picture of Trump and his 'people' that makes me furious, and I am not alone. Please sir, if you really care about the country take off the blinders and the yoke; stand tall and take a long look.
Mark Young (California)
Let’s face it: Unless Mueller had found a dead girl or live boy in Trump’s bed, Republicans would consider him completely innocent. We have yet to see the full report plus its supporting documents. Trump may not be “chargeable” but the report is likely to paint a portrait of corruption and deceit that even hardened Trump supporters can comprehend. Expect a battle royale for the release of this report. The fat lady has yet to sing.
theresa (New York)
@Mark Young Not even then.
Nycgal (New York)
Do not resign. Laugh at the audacity of the demand. Get back to doing the good work of holding the unethical accountable.
JANET MICHAEL (Silver Spring)
The Republicans are mistaken as usual as they try to calibrate bad behavior.McCarthy accused every liberal of having Communist ties.No one is accusing Trump of being a Communist-he is exhibit one of a Capitalist! He is by his own admission an admirer of Putin and takes his word over that of his own Intelligence Department. That is not what American presidents do.In this age of social media warfare we need to proudly declare that no country can interfere with our elections!
GDB (Shenzhen China)
There was a time when his party would have censored him. The party of JFK is long gone. George Washington in his valedictory to the nation warned us of the potential threat the political parties represented to the nation. The Russian collusion conspiracy was always binary. Either the Trump campaign conspired with the Russians or Obama and high officials in his administration conspired to undermine our democracy using our counterintelligence services. Time to investigate the latter. I take no pleasure is writing this....in fact I’m pretty disgusted.
irene (fairbanks)
Just wondering. When did 'Putinism' become a Thing ?
1 bite at a time (utah)
“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said. This would be the same King of Hypocrisy, Kevin McCarthy, that is now trying to smear Schiff, opining BEFORE anyone else knew what was going on with Russia, that Putin was paying Trump. Republicans are no longer credible, and are in violation of their oaths of office. Rather than defending our Constitution, they are doing their utmost to rip it to shreds, and trample it under for. SHAME ON THEM!!!
zula (Brooklyn)
Puh-leeze! Adam Schiff's my congressman, and he's terrific.
Leslie (Amherst)
Republicans will vilify anyone they possibly can. But, as we all know, Schiff is one of the honorable people who wishes to save our democracy from a raving lunatic and life-long crook. Hang tough, Mr. Schiff. We need you right where you are. The only villains, beside Trump and his team, are the Republicans who aid and abet him.
YReader (Seattle)
Putin has won! The country is divided and one party are completely and wholly unpatriotic. Why? Because they really hate the average person and are only interested in their power and wealth.
Corbin (Minneapolis)
I can think of about 9,000 times the president has “knowingly disseminated false information”, but I am confused as to why Schiff is being accused.
Yankelnevich (Denver)
How delusional can people be? Trump is "innocent?" You mean he and his cohorts really didn't obstruct justice for the past two years? They didn't seek Russian help against Hillary Clinton? They are all upstanding individuals with impeccable records of honesty in business and politics. Manafort was aberration. So too was Michael Cohen, Rick Gates, Michael Flynn and Roger Stone. Trump of course is known for always telling the truth. Never insulting people, lying through his teeth, dodging the draft, cheating on his taxes, stiffing contractors, humiliating women...a true hero. I await the full Mueller report which undoubtedly will put Trump and his henchmen in their places.
Nan Socolow (West Palm Beach, FL)
Adam Schiff is a patriotic American. Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Sen. Schiff is a man of integrity and character being assailed by his Republican colleagues in the Senate. The President called Sen. Schiff "Little Adam Schitt (D-CA)" in November. President Trump tweeted today, "He should be forced to resign!". We have no idea what the full 300 page Mueller Report contains as we haven't seen it. We have seen William Barr's 2 day exercise of condensing the Special Counsel's investigation into 4 condescending pages, after which Trump exulted, "No collusion, no obstruction! Total and complete exoneration!". Oh, no, not true! Fascinating that Trump tweeted today "Congressman Adam Schiff, who spent two years knowingly unlawfully lying and leaking, should be forced to resign from Congress!" The president is holding a 2020 rally in Michigan right now. The usual bread and circus for his base, the usual calumnies against Democrats (and many other people), the usual ranting and raving and posturing for his loyal folks. Just another rally like the countless ones he's held since the day he was elected in 2016 (and before). So, who else do we know who has spent the past 2+ years knowingly and unlawfully lying?
alan (Fernandina Beach)
@Nan Socolow - could you all please stop calling him a senator. he's in the house. I'm starting to think the dem commenters don't know what they are talking about.
Paulie (Earth Unfortunately The USA Portion)
I watched as the republicans read their speeches off of a script, provided either by the White House or the minority leader. I was surprised that Devin Nunes was capable of reading at all. I’m sure his copy was spelled phonetically so he’d get the words with more than two syllables correct.
Brad (Oregon)
Let’s see the Mueller report!
Mary Ann (Pennsylvania)
The Republican party is truly the party of Trump. Sad.
Bernie (Philadelphia)
Trump is right. People who lie to the American people should resign. Maybe Adam Schiff will resign - a nano second after 9000 liar Trump does so first.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
Repub's just can't leave well enough alone. They get a break with a 4 page report of a 300 page Muellar report and what do they do? Faux outrage at Schiff. Then he expertly turns around and skewers them with his "You might think that it's OK speech", bringing up, point by point, everything that shows Trump's involvement with Russia and what toadies all Repubs are.
Jana (Troy NY)
Mr. Schiff, there is no need for you resign. Please tell the republicans to go clean their own house and get the morally bankrupt, lying, cheating President Trump to resign first.
j (here)
AS should have added "you may think it's OK for the president to meet with a hostile foreign leader with no one besides the interpreters present and then demand his interpreter's notes but I don't"
Pat (USA)
Kevin McCarthy must have either a wonderful sense of humor or absolutely no notion of history. Accusing Congressman Schiff go McCarthyism? When Trump learned at the feet of Roy Cohn, who was Joseph McCarthy's principal aide?
Ellie (Honolulu)
Adam Schiff is a disgrace and needs to step down - Peddling lies for 2 years is simply unforgivable. Time to investigate Obama and his administration now, as rightly pointed out today by rep. Rand Paul
Steve Snow (Cumming, Georgia)
There can’t possibly be anything more absurd and laughable than a cheap republican trying to stand on self- righteous principle! Have these trump stooges forgotten Benghazi? Ghanaian was right... one of the great weaknesses of the coward is practicing politics ... without principle!
Mark (Heyman)
I don't know about collusion, but we all got to watch obstruction - right on our own TVs, not to mention corruption and incompetence, ignorance, racism , sexism . . . :( :( :(
John (Nashville)
This isn't a "chasm." It's more like a tiny crack.
Tim Prendergast (Palm Springs)
Schiff is doing his job. He is doing the people's work. Remember, when it was Nunes who headed this committee, all we got were lies, obfuscation and dissembling from the same people who are now calling for Schiff's head. Don't let these people fool you. Adam Schiff has more integrity in his little finger than the entire Republican Party does on a good day. Keep your head high Mr. Schiff! You have the truth and America's best interest at your side and in your heart!
Slr (Kansas City)
I think I’ll ignore the republican members of the committee and wait to hear from Devin Nunes cow.
Steveb (MD)
The mueller report cannot considered completed until congress and the American people have seen it! Get with it NYT and stop shirking your responsibility as an independent voice .
aek (New England)
This is an organized domestic enemy on the attack. I stand with Rep. Schiff. The GOP must be thoroughly investigated, and every member of that party who is in government and who is working to undermine the country and Constitution must be held fully accountable. It's past time to dissolve the Republican Party. It stands as a useful idiot to Russia and Saudi Arabia, and it does not serve the country.
SeanMcL (Washington, DC)
Two words for that hypocrite, McCarthy: Devin Nunes.
Character Counts (USA)
The GOP thinks a large portion of Americans are a bunch of complete morons. Unfortunately, they are absolutely correct: Trump's base. It's shocking, the stupidity, naivete, and delusion of his cult. America is sinking, FAST. Trump has far exceeded my worst nightmares; the GOP has no soul left. Mr Schiff and the few remaining Patriots, we are relying on you to right this ship. Use the powers the electorate gave to you, and drag every witness into that chamber, especially Mueller. Start writing the subpoenas now. Time to stop playing and asking nice. We want the Truth, now!
Martina (Chicago)
Hurrah for Adam Schiff!!! Kevin McCarthy, with your own name, you ought to know about "McCarthyism." And hypocrisy . . . Republicans get a Grade A.
Matthew (Nj)
This is ridiculously absurd and disgusting. If republicans applied this set of “rules” to themselves they’d all go *poof* into thin air, raptured out of Congress for their horrendous false accusations. It’s just so ironic that now, with highly credible “we heard him say it right out in the open to Lester Holt”, tons of evidence and multiple convictions for his campaign cronies for massive criminality, they want to play this card. Sick. The whole republican party is sick in the head.
dba (nyc)
Trump is calling Schiff a liar? That's rich. Schiff and all the democrats should tweet and ask: Mr. President, why did you knowingly make up a lie about the Trump Tower meeting with Jr. and the Russian operative? Not to mention all the other lies that you spout every day. Fat chance that Schiff will resign. However, democrats need to walk and chew gum and attack Trump on the issues for 2020.
Steve Snow (Cumming, Georgia)
Why would mr. Schiff accept the conclusions of a political appointee who found trump innocent of any and all charges last summer... 6 months before he was appointed for just that very purpose,.. don’t take my word for it.... fully 70 % of the American electorate thinks he got off...
jaco (Nevada)
@Steve Snow Because the conclusions are those of Mueller.
County Clare (Lisdoonvarna)
Republicans should be reminded that the ‘trump tax cuts’ were implemented without any a Democrat involved in the House Committee meetings. Perhaps, if the GOP members continue their unjustified attacks and disruptions, the Democratic House committee Chairs can now return the favor.
Uncle Donald (California)
Proud to have just sent a contribution to Adam Schiff. Remember that it was the work of a tireless, tenacious and patriotic Congress that carried the ball to bring down a corrupt President who had just carried 49 of 50 states in the previous election. The Mueller coverup and Schiff & Co.’s dogged determination to bring all the facts out for everyone to see might still accomplish the same thing forty-five years later. If nothing else, it should put the chill on the notion that this ersatz, blithering POTUS can win another term. And then we can establish laws defining more exacting ethical standards for public servants (including POTUS) that will shield us from the abuses we have endured over four decades of the Republican dirty tricks playbook.
Reasoned44 (28717)
@Uncle Donald Where is Mr. Schiff’s evidence?
Uncle Donald (California)
It is currently being redacted by the ersatz Attorney General. But the third time will not be the charm for the Republicans’ Chief obfuscator. Wait for the steak, not the so-called “sizzle” of a career partisan hack who has tried to put a respectable face on Republican dirty tricks for thirty years...
Tibbeth (Nyc)
Rep Schiff is a real American hero standing up for what this country strives to stand for. The republicans seeking to defame and derail him represent corruption and lack of decency through and through. The people of this country are not stupid. We see their constant disingenuous, immoral actions. I don't know how they face themselves through the cover of their dishonesty and lack of integrity.
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
We will stand with Adam Schiff, obviously, Failure Trump and his band of deplorables are scared of Schiff....and scared of what will be uncovered. This is not over yet....and the more Trump gloats and seeks retribution, the more we know that he certainly has plenty to hide. So many questions raised by Barr’s pathetic “memo”.....does he really believe we have fallen for his political partisan tactics?....shame is what he should feel. The Democrats will be triumphant .
Paolo Masone (Wisconsin)
I figure that if Trump resigns, then it's ok for Schiff to resign. Fair play, no?
Ponsobny Britt (Frostbite Falls, MN.)
@Paolo Masone: Fair play, no. First, Trump isn't going to resign. Secondly, Schiff has no reason to resign. For Trump to all Schiff a liar, is an embarrassingly obvious case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Az (Palo Alto, CA)
No. Schiff is effective and accomplished.
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
Schiff for my President!
Robert kennedy (Dallas Texas)
Thank goodness we have someone like Schiff who is a Democrat willing to fight and take names and call the Republicans on their many failings. The Republicans play dirty these days, and Schiff is right to call them on it.
Jay Lincoln (NYC)
Schiff should be impeached for his slander and libel of two years, publicly touting collusion as chair of the intelligence committee when there clearly was no evidence.
Corbin (Minneapolis)
@Jay Lincoln Wait, 34 people were charged with crimes and some of them even got convicted and sentenced! Are you actually pretending that never happened?
Jay Lincoln (NYC)
@Corbin Most of it was just for silly stuff like lying to Congress, which shouldn’t even be a crime. I mean, Congressmen, like most politicians, lie to us on a daily basis. Why can’t we lie back to them?
Matthew Carnicelli (Brooklyn, NY)
I think Donald Trump should resign for deliberately attempting to cast doubt on Barack Obama's eligibility to serve as President. I'm still waiting to hear what Trump's people found out in Hawaii. Adam Schiff is a fine public servant, and I expect to see him rise to a Congressional leadership position in the years to come. Donald Trump, on the other hand, will doubtless be facing a hurricane of legal challenges once he leaves office.
lecourt... (Canada)
How on earth can someone who is on the record over 8 thousand times as lying in public, almost the last of which was an embellishment of the Mueller conclusion (via the 4 page Barr summary), hope to muzzle and degrade an ethical person who relies on facts for his statements, by barging ahead with faux facts of his making?
Dendreon (Texas)
Mueller report only says there was no collusion. But it is a known fact as proven by the U.S. intelligence agencies that the Russian's interfered in the 2016 elections which Trump still denies. Trump supported the Russian's interference....why wouldn't he since their interference gave him the election. The House Intelligence Committee must continue in their investigation under Adam's Schiff able leadership. Trump and the GOP have a lot to fear. More facts will come out against Trump once the Mueller Report is released.
David (Brisbane)
@Dendreon That is not what Adam Schiff claimed for two years straight. He claimed that there was collusion, that he has clear evidence of it and that Trump is a Russian agent. That was all shown to be a lie. Yet Schiff continues to insist on those lies and wants to keep "investigating" the non-existent "collusion". That is just shameful.
MDCooks8 (West of the Hudson)
Why is Adam Schiff trolling for donations on social media, is it for attorney fees?
tim k (nj)
For two years Democrats have been praising Robert Mueller as the consumate boy scout who most assuredly would document all the “in plain sight collusion” Adam Schiff promised would be exposed in his final report it’s clear that n his final report Mueller has called Schiff’s bluff. By unequivocally stating that “despite multiple opportunities” there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia he has exposed Schiff for the pathetic, political hack he is. Despite the rotten egg now dripping from his face Schiff has doubled down on his claims. After experiencing the same smelly after taste Democrat House members like Nancy Pelosi continue to sing the “collusion” Hymn. After two years of making what many consider noise, Schiff and Pelosi appear destined to join the “one hit wonder” crowd and fade away into oblivion.
Az (Palo Alto, CA)
Mueller’s report is closed. You don’t know what’s in it.
David (Brisbane)
@Az Yes, we do. There is a summary of it which clearly describes its contents and conclusions.
SNA (NJ)
I demand Mitch McConnell ‘s resignation.
Gwe (Ny)
He can quit when he replaces Trump in the White House!
ReyandtheResistance (CT)
Adam Schiff is a true patriot. Not a greedy, lying, opportunistic liar, like Trump et al. Please stay where you are Mr. Schiff. We need honest leaders and they are in short supply right now.

"You might say that’s all O.K. You might say that’s just what you need to do to win. But I don’t think it’s O.K. I think it’s immoral. I think it’s unethical. I think it’s unpatriotic. And yes, I think it’s corrupt.”" Me, too.
WeThePeople (NY)
I have 4 words for you: Devin Nunes' treasonous actions. Remember? Giving Trump info? Sharing reports? Talk about Schiff AFTER you address your own house.
Dolly Patterson (Silicon Valley)
Hey guess what Republicans? We Dems want Trimps immediate resignation so maybe when u give us Trump then Schiff!
N.Eichler (California)
Roy Cohn was Joseph McCarthy's right hand man and later became the mentor to Donald Trump. Considering this not so ethically illustrious relationship, it doesn't look very principled for Kevin McCarthy to compare Adam Schiff to that other McCarthy. Keep in mind as well that the Washington Post has a list of nearly 9,000 lies told by the ethically challenged fellow Donald Trump. And about the 'en masse demand' that Rep. Schiff resign, it brings to mind the following from Macbeth: '...it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.' Those Republican 'idiots' must have been reading Shakespeare while deciding how to approach Mr. Schiff and his first-rate leadership of the House Intelligence Committee, and which leadership they haven't seen for quite some time.
brupic (nara/greensville)
you gotta give it to the republicans...there are absolutely shameless. trump couldn't sit down without squashing nunes' face when the not so illustrious former chairman was in charge before the mid terms.
New World (NYC)
Rep. Adam Schiff: I stand at attention and solute you, Sir. You’re one of the good guys !
anonymous (US)
Do. Not. Resign. Under any circumstances. Keep at it, Schiff.
Frances Menzel (Pompano Beach, Florida)
Hmmmmm..... So the president would like Mr. Schiff to resign from Congress. I’d like to propose a deal: Schiff will resign if Trump will go. After all, Schiff’s statements represent his real opinion based on the available data, whereas Trump’s are malignant, made-up lies that even he doesn’t believe. I would miss Schiff, but the trade might be worth it, especially if Pence would go as well.
JDH (NY)
VOTE. Vote every single republican who are the real threat to our Democracy. That they have the gaul to lie and obfuscate all in the name of greed and power over their oath to the Constitution and the American people, is an egregious affront to this country and the people they are trusted to serve. Adam Schiff is the true patriot in this situation and the people of this country will stand by him. Those who don't have lost thier integrity and have no understating of what a Democrocy looks like. VOTE
David (Brisbane)
Adam Schiff is a truly despicable human being - a partisan hack extraordinaire. He demonstrates complete lack of character and conscience, when finding himself in the hole his best response is to keep digging. Why exactly is it "not OK" to have a back channel for negotiating with the Russians? It was OK with the Taliban. What is so particularly evil about the Russians? Or why is it not OK to try to find out what information a foreign intelligence has on an opponent? it was OK for Hillary Clinton with the Steel dossier, was it not? Talk about "immoral". Is there anything more immoral in politics than what Adam Schiff did? He new it was all a hoax yet he kept going with tearing the country apart for his political ends. Who knows how much that deceptive campaign affected the elections in 2018. Certainly more than any "Russian meddling" did in 2018.
Anna (NY)
@David: I'll explain: It's not OK what Kushner, Trump Sr. and Trump Jr. did, because it amounts to accepting help from an foreign adversary to influence the elections, which is expressly forbidden in American elections. Russian offers to the Trump campaign should have immediately been reported to the FBI and Kushner, as a regular civilian, tried to set up his backchannel in secret without American intelligence agencies knowing about it. The Steele dossier was started by a Republican donor, a fact all Trumpers mentioning it try to sweep under the carpet, and for the most part has been independently verified to be correct. Russian intervention benefitting Trump and damaging Hillary Clinton has been proven convincingly and is not a hoax. It is Trump who behaved unethically and unpatriotic in calling upon the Russian hackers to find Hillary Clinton's lost emails (which they promptly attempted to do), to kiss up to Putin while throwing his country, its law enforcement institutions and its longtime allies under the bus, and saying he believed Putin when the latter lied that Russia had not tried to interfere in the American election. We also still need to see Trump's tax returns and the full Mueller report. What is Trump hiding that cannot see the sunlight?
David (Brisbane)
@Anna That is not an explanation, Anna. That is just an elaboration on the same Adam Schiff's lies which are proven to be false. Mueller investigated all of it and found no collusion. End of story. Schiff must apologise and resign immediately.
irene (fairbanks)
@Anna Reminding you again that Herself's emails were 'lost' thanks to being on an unsecured server . . .
Just Saying (New York)
Most readers of this paper probably never heard of, not to mention heard, the recording of the two Ukrainian pranksters pretending to be politicians spoofing Adam with a promise of compromising pics of naked Trump. During the recording pranksters get more and more absurd and push how far they can go and Adam dutifully writes it all down, double checks the spelling of names, and follows up with promises to dispatch his staff to get the goodies.( exactly what he is accusing Trump of) What cannot be accurately described, and one has to hear the tape for oneself, is how let’s say “ not so bright” he is in real life. Not sure what his spin is on this. Probably that he always knew it was a joke. The unedited recording proves otherwise.
Anna (NY)
@Just Saying: From the NY Post, Feb 6, 2018: "A rep for Schiff had earlier told The Atlantic that the call was reported to “appropriate law enforcement and security personnel” because “of our belief that it was probably bogus.” The Russian pair has pulled similar stunts on Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)."
Steveb (MD)
Probably because it never happened.
Silvio M (San Jose, CA)
The personal threats and demands made to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) by the GOP leadership are off-base, pathetic and, quite frankly, laughable! Just look at the totally unprofessional conduct of the GOP throughout the presidency of Barack Obama... not to mention the outrageous and personal insults made by Donald Trump during that time! My advice to the GOP: if you insist on riding along with the president, then you better put on your seat belts! Trump's legal issues will hit the NY State and Federal courts soon. Have fun with that mess during the election season!
g.i. (l.a.)
People who live in glass penthouses shouldn't throw stones. Trump should resign, not Schiff. He'd make a good president
Chad (Brooklyn)
Trump was a birther. Lest we forget.
Down62 (Iowa City, Iowa)
If Republicans truly want blood following a bogus and failed investigation, they should all resign after the Clinton fiascos.
Sixofone (The Village)
"You might say that’s just what you need to do to win. But I don’t think it’s O.K. I think it’s immoral. I think it’s unethical. I think it’s unpatriotic. And yes, I think it’s corrupt.” Sounds to me much more like Joseph N. Welch's "Have you no sense of decency, sir?" than McCarthy.
Gwhizrd (California)
Indignant Republicans have only themselves to blame for all the investigations. They seem to have forgotten their obsession with Benghazi and investigating and investigating some more just to keep Hilary Clinton from becoming president. They need to move on from this ridiculous position. I suggest they try advancing some POLICIES forward. Like maybe their so far elusive replacement for Obamacare.
IN (New York)
Adam Schiff is a great Patriot and hero. Trump colluded with Russia even if he didn’t meet the strictest legal definition of criminal conspiracy. He was informed that Russia was meddling in our election. Yet he had innumerable contacts with Russia and was eager to find dirt on Hillary. Trump invited Putin to release the emails and he praised Putin as a stronger and better leader than our President.! He was negotiating with the Russians to build Trump Moscow even during his campaign. He likely is dependent on Russian money to operate his organization and probably money launders it through off shore partnerships. He lied and his team lied even under oath about these contacts. Why? Any other Presidential aspirant would reject any foreign contacts during a campaign and immediately report them to the FBI. Trump did the opposite. He hid his contacts, abetted them, and amplified their message. He offered the Russians a pro Russian foreign policy with a lifting of sanctions and has tried to implement it. In my opinion his conduct is worse than a legal crime. It borders on treason and is totally impeachable. History will judge him as one of our great villains and as a reprehensible and duplicitous liar. He has no shame and we are stained by our support of this illegitimate leader and horrific man.
APO (JC NJ)
Reminds me of the scene in Goodfellas when Ray Liotta comes home after a long night out and his wife's mother starts to blubber - He laughs in he face as he walks away - this is too funny the party of endless investigations no longer likes them very much.
Terence (San Francisco)
The fact that Kevin McCarthy, Michael Turner, Michael K. Conaway, Will Hurd, Brad Wenstrup, Eric Crawford, John Ratcliffe, Elise Stefanik, Devin Nunes and Donald Trump could get elected to public office makes me doubt that this country could ever prosper, and be a bastion of progress and compassion. But, the intelligence and humanity of Adam Schiff gives me hope.
Vanessa Hall (Millersburg, MO)
Someone tell the Republicans they lost the House in the election this past November, and that Democrats are now in charge of Congressional Committees. Mr. Schiff is in charge of the House Intelligence Committee. And Republicans don't have to like it. If they're so against Adam Schiff it can only mean he's doing the job the way it should be done.
Pat (Iowa)
Stand firm, Mr. Schiff. The people really need you in Washington, especially after the unnecessary loss of Al Franken.
Doug (New jersey)
This man should not even consider resigning. In fact, he must continue to guide us through the opposition to the autocratic conspiracy to obstruct and subvert justice in this country by Trump and the Republicans in Congress and those political hacks in malevolent control of the Justice Department. We never needed him more. Sorry Republicans, resignation is not on the table. It is not even in the building.
Sam (NYC)
I find it comical, puzzling, and pathetic that the President and GOP are so very desperate to end this investigation NOW and declare themselves victors, they seem to have forgotten they are basing this conclusion on a report that no one has actually read (probably not even AG Barr in his epic weekend speed read). The law is nuanced, complicated, twisted and complex. It’s annoying. I know. I had to learn it. Words matter very much. The Special Counsel and how ever many brilliant attorneys took 22 months to sift through countless documents that at the end of the day lead to countless indictments, spin off trials in other jurisdictions, and what seems to be a punt to Congress to decide the major issue of obstruction of justice-but that’s according to a summary letter by an AG that has made it clear in a rambling and at times nonsensical unsolicited 19 page memo that no matter what Mueller’s report found, Barr’s findings would be the same. What’s the rush guys? Isn’t it in the best interests of this country to determine if the sitting president was corrupt? And wouldn’t you like to draw that opinion from the source documents themselves rather than copying your answer from the captain of the football team that is currently holding a C average? And how does getting at this truth in any way interfere with all of the important other things you are doing like killing the planet, gerrymandering, bump stocks, and making america safe for corporate interests?
Rain (NJ)
SC Mueller spent 22 months investigating this president and could NOT exonerate him on obstruction charges. That says it all! This president and his inner circle apparently have alot to hide and will do their best to prevent the American people from seeing the Mueller Report. This president has outrageously called to blacklist Schiff (should remind all of us of the McCarthy era). He wants this all to go away and is doing his best to distract the media from getting the Mueller report. He doesn't want the truth to come out. It will hurt his re-election chances. Schiff and the other democratic leaders especially House Speaker Pelosi - need to press on and get the full Mueller report reviewed by Congress and after that the American people. We paid for the Mueller investigation and we deserve the report.
jdawg (bellingham)
Keep imagining how this would be spun if this shoe was on Obama's foot.
dhc (Falls Church, VA)
Republicans worked up into a high dither - par for the course. Ignore them, Rep. Schiff, and keep doing what you're doing. It must be right because they're foaming at the mouth so much.
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
Will all the Republicans who attempted to create a crime where there was none with Hillary Clinton show us they practice what they preach and step down. Even if they did, Schiff is doing a great job and should stay the course.
PC (Aurora, Colorado)
Right on Adam Schiff! Republicans are bullies. They’ll hang you if you let them. What they don’t realize is there are a million more out there, like me, waiting and willing to back you up. Trump is a colossal narcissist. He is an A1-Grifter. All of us are aware. But worse, Trump is a Traitor; someone who conspires with a hostile, foreign government against a citizen, (and its citizens), of his own country. Yes, he conspired with the Russians. He knew of Hillary’s hack in advance. He also knew of, and approved of, Russia’s involvement with the Israeli social media manipulation firm. But it’s worse! Now the GOP in its entirety, has swung support towards the Russians. The GOP’s corruption has been noticed by Russia. Two peas in a pod. Russia has infiltrated the NRA and there’s no telling how far up these connections go. As we know, Russia is planning to hack the 2020 elections. What we don’t know is the GOP will be right there with them, every step of the way against Democrats and Independents in the upcoming 2020 election. But this isn’t going to happen. We will not stand idly by while our country is being sold, like so much chattel. Thank you Adam Schiff. Democrats and Independents stand with you!
Etienne (Los Angeles)
"“We should not be used as a platform to spread false information and bizarre conspiracies,” Mr. Nunes said..." A gobsmacking comment from someone who did precisely that.
The Hawk (Arizona)
Hah hah. When are all those people who demanded Clinton's head over those emails going to resign? The outcome was basically the same. Reckless but criminal intent could not be proven. What you are seeing now is the height of hypocrisy. Actually, a double standard. The Trump tower meeting and the Moscow hotel deal, we know all that happened already without any more reports. This is worse than any emails. It's sickening. No other president would survive this and I wonder if somebody would bother to tell me why this one does? Because, you know, it's not like the benefits outweigh the problems here.
AW (California)
Republicans are throwing a victory party before the final whistle has been blown. They'll all have egg on their faces when this is all said and done. I mean...Lindsey Graham is still calling for further investigations of the Clinton email server! But their guy does his best to hide the report and pretend it amounts to nothing, writing a four page summary saying "nothing to see here", and they're all like "moving on..."? They're scared because they don't even know what horror it is that they have made a pact to defend, and without the report, they will not have to face that corrupt truth, but once the report is released, they are doomed.
Michele Snow (Watertown, Ma)
Lindsay Graham's moral compass is in the Trump sewer. Wonder what he's been promised. Viva Adam Schiff, re-elected by popular vote.
sh (San diego)
Schiff has been dishonest since the start of this investigation. Almost everything he says is false. Resigning from his committee head position should be demanded
sapere aude (Maryland)
The resolution for releasing the Mueller report passed the House unanimously, 100% of the votes. That included the Republicans of that committee. Why the belly-aching now? What are they afraid of? Why can’t they enjoy their victory? Maybe because they know it’s a “victory”? And if Schiff resigns everything goes away? The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. She is not even on stage yet.
Missy (Texas)
Schiff should ask for all of the republican's to resign from congress for anti American acts, and coverups. Democrats in the House don't back down, just mirror whatever the republicans are requesting, they should step down for shameful behavior.
Bill Uicker (Portland, OR)
We don't know Mueller's conclusions. We know what Barr wants us to know. Now we hear that Mueller's grand jury is still working. What do Republicans think they know?
Tough Call (USA)
And we’d like mcconnell and trump’s immediate resignation. How about we trade?
tencato (Los angeles)
Time for Nunes and McCarthy to take their Republican committee colleagues to Disneyland. There they can continue their adventures in Fantasyland. Midnight cab rides for everyone!
CRL (NY)
I support Rep. Adam Schiff 100% ! Mr Schiff has shown himself to be a man of great integrity and honour. Shame on any Republican who implies otherwise. With this action, there is no question in my mind now how Republicans have shown themselves to be corruptable (by Trump) and very, very cowardly.
mikeinencinitas (encinitas)
Dear Congressman Schiff; Regardless of which broadcasting or cable-network program I have listened to your excellent questions and explanations through-out these incredible last 3-years, if anyone should caught the eye of independents and Democrats; no doubt, it's you! The FACT that the President has singled-you out now is high-praise indeed: as to your future? Speaker of the House, the Supreme Court, who knows, but slow-and-steady as this process goes: while 2020 might be a Presidency-Too-Far, today, at this politically hysterical-moment; your future is bright! Congratulations! Be sure to ask any of the Republic popcorn squad calling for retaliation, publicly and politically: treachery and treason? The President spent a long-time in a private-room with Vladimir Putin and personally destroyed a copy of any notes made by the American translator in Helsinki who was required to sign a NDA about Trump/Putin. Finally, Mr. Schiff never lost his composure while the Paul Ryan Designated Republican Congressman Chair acted NOT for oversight for the Congressional Intelligence Committee, but chose to Uber his wa- over-to The White House and then called a press-conference to announce...that he had no-proof of anything? After a Tsunami; like the November 2018 Election; roars inland and then recedes, leaving horrific chaos as the tide reforms; that is what I see in D.C. now. God Bless the Interim Chief of Staff advising Trump to go against the ACA. Bon Voyage...in 2020!
Anna (NY)
As usual, much growling and yowling, huffing and puffing, howling and caterwauling, barking and snarking, from the Republicans and Trump, who are masters at accusing their critics of what they are guilty of themselves. Mr. Schiff may want to buy some earplugs and go about his job, which he fulfills with excellence.
Sherry (Washington)
Mr Schiff is exactly right. He accepts there might not have been enough evidence to prove conspiracy, but he is sickened by Trump's Russia ties. The people who should resign are those who are calling for his head, as if Schiff did anything wrong. But here's what's really scary. Because of Republican criticism of the Russia investigation, their attitudes toward Russia itself have changed. In 2014, only 22 percent of Republicans said that Russia was an ally. That number is now 40 percent. Republicans were breathing fire about Russia's invasion of Ukraine when Obama was President. Now, their concern about Putin's aggression has vanished. Putin has won. The Republican party has forgotten that Democrats are their colleagues and fellow Americans and instead has taken Russia's side against them. Their attacks on Schiff, and their embrace of Putin and Russia, border on traitorous. https://thehill.com/hilltv/what-americas-thinking/397239-polling-editor-increased-support-for-russia-among-republicans
Bonnie (Phoenix)
I support the views of Chairman Schiff. Republicans in Congress have failed to provide checks and balances on an executive branch that's out of control. I have lost all respect for the Republicans currently in Congress and most especially for Senator Mitch McConnell. Furthermore, The Mueller Report in its entirety must be released to the American people immediately.
Matthew (Washington)
Pull Schiff’s security clearance. Then investigate him and every elected Dem. After all, if they have nothing to hide they won’t complain, right? That’s what they essentially asserted for two years when Trump was being investigated.
Brenda Newton (Denver)
There needs to be evidence of criminal wrongdoing or a threat to national security to open an FBI investigation and that’s why the investigation of Trump and his associates was opened. It’s another sign of our decaying democracy that Trump and his GOP supporters just want to investigate their opponents for no reason. They are still saying Lock her Up at Trump Rally’s even thought Hillary was cleared. Are you okay with that too?
A P (Eastchester)
Lincoln said it best, "that government by the people, for the people, of the people, shall not perish from the earth," therefore let we, "the people ," see the entire report.
rls (Illinois)
"That has in turn enraged Republicans..." No surprise there. That's what Republicans do best. Governing... no so much, but getting enraged? They practice, and practice. They put in the time and effort until they can do it at will. Look at Brett Kavanaugh. Even Sen. Lindsey Graham and he wasn't being accused of anything nefarious. Great performances. Bravo! Bravo! Is there an "enrage school" I can sign up to learn how to do this or do I just have to vote Republican?
Paul (New Jersey)
"The findings of the special council conclusively refute your past and present assertions..." How would Representative Conaway know Anything about the findings of the special council when the Muller report has not yet been released? Republicans act as if Barr's memo were the report itself. Congress and the public only know what Barr has wanted us to know. Until the report is made public no one can draw any conclusions about it's contents. As far as I'm concerned not much has changed yet. Let's stop treating the Barr memo as anything other than what it it, an attempt to muddy the waters.
Bob (Hudson Valley)
The Republicans are shouting about Schiff because they know they are protecting a president who is carrying out Russia's foreign policy. Why hasn't Trump released his tax returns? Why hasn't he told anyone what he discussed with Putin during a long conversation they had alone, which is against all normal procedures? Why is Trump attacking leaders of liberal democracies and praising fascist dictators? Why has Trump attacked the press in the US that criticizes him as the enemy of the people? Why does Trump refuse to admit that Russia interfered with the US election in 2016? The questions go on and on. Based on all of his behavior it seems clear that Trump has sold out to Russia, a country that bailed him out of serious financial difficulties, and is helping them reduce the influence of the US and Western European democracies to relatively elevate the role of Russia. Putin does not like that fact that the US and Western European countries, liberal democracies, have basically dominated the world order since WWII and he is using Trump to make a big change and sadly the Republicans are going along with this.
Think (Wisconsin)
Where were the Republican cries of outrage when then Chairman Devin Nunes was caught hopping in and out of cars in the dead of night in March 2017 to go secretly brief Trump on partial information he possessed about government surveillance of various Trump officials (that was leaked to him by an intelligence official) without informing other members of his Intelligence Committee first? The Republicans continue to embrace a 'disaster waiting to happen' President, as they place their decaying party before the real and dire needs of their nation.
Kathleen S. Miller (California)
Thank you, Congressman Schiff, for standing up to the GOP members who's blind allegiance to Trump prohibit them from being able to see truth. As they squirmed in their seats during your refutation, their awkwardness became apparent. I would guess that some wish they had had enough courage to refuse to sign that ridiculous GOP letter. I look forward to more of your eloquent revelations of truth.
citizen vox (san francisco)
Adam Schiff, more than anyone e;se in public life, has shown he knows more about Congress' responsibility and has the legal education and experience as well as the integrity and love of country to wield his power as Chair of the Intelligence Committee to full effect. In return he has earned the high honor of scaring the Republicans to demand he steps down. Congratulations Chairman. May you revel in your honor. We now need to protect Schiff as rigorously as we had previously protected Mueller.
Rain (NJ)
@citizen vox We need more Adam Schiffs in government. He is one of the few that have not been silenced and intimidated by this president and this president's inner circle. Press on and continue to lead Representative Schiff. We need more people like you in our congress.
MJ (NJ)
Trump alleges that the Mueller investigation was an attempt to "takeover" the government. If that were true, it would have gone after Pence, McConnell, and Ryan, too as those are the people that would take Trump's place (before Dems won house) if he were impeached. I don't relish a President Pence at all, but if Trump committed crimes to get in office or while in office , that is what we have to live with. Sounds like the Constitution working, not an illegal takeover.
