I believe it’s a dad protecting his son from possible threats.
Creedince (St. Ignatius)
I think this picture is about a father who is teaching their son traditional tactics such as tying up there hawk and learning to hunt. I think this because the hawk has the rope tied around the leg and the father has the other end of the rope. They also have traditional clothing.
Gabriel (New Calédonia)
I think the father is teaching the son to hunt with an eagle.
Gabriel (New Calédonia)
I think his father is tiying his shoes.
Rodney (SKHS)
this picture was probably taken in Mongolia, and the parent is teaching the baby how to tie up their spotting hawk, and probably teaching the kid how to do snares, and hunt.
Reeee (Reee)
They are fortnite characters and Epic Games put birds in the game that give you shield
lilly (zwink)
it looks like they live in the wild and are dressing up as a animal
Ramiah (SKHS)
@lilly I feel like it's probably traditional tribal clothing made from animal skins
Af (wisconsin)
I think this pic is about how the native Americans pass down there knowledge and what they know to there kids but in this pic, this child/kid is not capable of learning of things like that at this time of is life so maybe he is just camping out with family or he is at a powwow.
Rebecca Greenberg (South kitsap high school)
the son is spacing off and the dad is trying to make hand mitts because it is so cold and it is winter i can tell because the hats they are wearing they look tired. there is a bird right next to the son and he like it and the bird is cool with it
Molk (NY)
I see a father with his son. They are in the wilderness. They look like a native citizen. Thy wear a traditional clothes. I think the father is teaching his son how to hunt the bird. i also think they are in a cold area because the special fur hats.
alejandro (nyc)
I can infer that it is cold because of the clothes and they speak another language not English. and I think that they were hunting the eagle because they have a rope attached to it most likely they're trying to get food
Francesca . P (Martin Van Buren)
In this picture i see what seem to look like a father and son in the wilderness. There's a bird next to them, I feel like i see the father typing a rope to the birds leg or something. What seem interesting is that they both is wearing tradition cloth but if you look at the picture closely that the father is wearing modern sneakers. They could be Native Americans or mixed with Asian with Caucasian and what makes me say that is there skin color/race, and they look cold and what makes me say that is them wearing fur hats and the habitat and surrounding.
claunisei (Mvb)
It looks like they are Native American the reason i said that is because of the clothing that they are wearing.
Engerd Suriel (queens)
I think it's not because there are things of today, the tennis he has on and the clothes, the hats that are worn
Tasnim M (New York City)
The father and the son is sitting in the wilderness and the father is maybe teaching him how to tie and knot. I say that because the has a rope which is he trying to tie and his son is observing while he is doing it. I think they are natives of where ever they are because they are wearing traditional clothes.
Wasiqul H (New York City)
It seems like there are two native american shown in the picture and they are wearing animal fur in along with modern sneakers. The guy is tying a rope to the bird and I feel like they have captured the bird. This picture might have taken in the wilderness as shown in the background.
Ghiath A (NY)
It looks like the father was teaching his son about birds hunting because they wore different.
marie (mcc)
It looks like a father and son are capturing a bird most likely for food. There is a bird next to the little boy and rope around the birds leg and the father is holding a part of the rope and it looks like he is trying to tie it. In the photo it looks like they are in Alaska I say this because I used to live in Alaska and the Alaskan natives wore very similar clothing. It also looks as if the father is teaching the son how to tie a knot. Also, it looks like these two having been living outside or have been working hard outside looking closely at the dirt on their hands and faces.
Isabelle (pcs)
They look like father and son and the dad is tying his sons shoe
daniel (vermont)
i think that they are eagle hunters and they just cough an eagle.
Leslie (California)
A must see movie: The Eagle Huntress Then, you'll get it
Ms. Lott's Class (Midvale Middle School)
We think that this father and son are surviving in the mountains. The dad is helping the child to tie or make something with their hands. They are in the mountains based on the background.
Isabelle (pcs)
@Ms. Lott's Class Yes very good thoughts
Donnovan (pcs)
it looks like two people with some nice hats and looks like they are going on a trip or somthing and they are in the midldle of the woods with an owl. maybe they are amis or somthing
domeque (Cnanda)
The seem to be in Mongolia, by the outfits. The older male is wearing running shoes although his outfit is traditional. Love the juxtaposition. The child seem oblivious to the event. The bird’s foot is tied loosely to a rope. I can’t see his talons, wondering if they are flexed inward. It seems there is something black and shiny under the bird, it’s hood or a crow? The rope is tied to a few metal links. There seems to be a stick from the brush inserted in one of them. The older male seems to be wanting to tie the rope to something or maybe offer it to the child but there is no eye contact. The the hawk/falcon is extremely calm. The terrain is harsh. The embroidery on the outfits and the red bag the child holds is beautiful. It must be cold and windy. They are wearing coats and hood. The child’s shoes have no tread, he may be a toddler. It would be difficult to walk on the incline with those shoes. Oy! Carrying the child, the bird of prey on that rocky hill must be a feat!
Valentina (West Hartford, CT)
It looks as though it were to be a tradition. That at a young age, the young sons are taught to tie a knot around a bird's ankle. This could signify multiple things. It also shows how the bondage of family or the teaching of tradition. The young boy is looking off into the distance which can also go to show how "invested" he is in learning this task. The clothing that they are wearing also goes to show, it's not at the warmest time of the year, yet there they are, learning a new task.
Robert (ATl, GA)
The older boy is tying a knot with a string thats attached to the bird which he may be using to find food or keep track of the younger boy.
Donnovan (pcs)
@Robert ur wrong the older boy isn't trying to tie the string he is doing something with it but not tiring it the bird is the food!!!!
Nicole White (CMS)
if you look closely the bird has a knot around its leg. I think that there going to be hunting with the bird how we hunt with dogs. they might live in Mongolia based on there clothings.
Matt (school)
I think the dad is teaching the child something in which involves tying a string to a bird or their trying train it or eat it
Dwight Schrute (Dunder Mifflin Paper Company)
I think that it is a father teaching his son to hunt
RCH (CMS)
shes tying his shoes
SJ (cms)
the baby's dad I believe is teaching it how to tie things and they have a taimed bird
Juni (CMS)
the're training a falcon.
kels (dundermuffin)
looks like they could be in Alaska or just in a random photo shoot
E (A place)
Looks like a Mongolian dad teaching his son how to hunt with the hawk, maybe how to collect a specific type of animal pelt or just how to get the hawk to listen to his commands and whistles.
MSMC (cms)
they are hunting for food or the bird is their pet
Hannah Spaine (Osage)
A women is helping a kid learn how to tie a knot maybe.
garfield (missouri)
I think they just lost their home or he is teaching the child how to tie a tie.
keyten (cms)
i think the father is tieing the rope to the bird so they can keep him or he is teaching him how to tie a tie
daniel (outside of a mall)
it looks like a model company and they are taking a shoot or the little kid is stuck and the dude is trying to help him
billy (dundermuffin)
I believe this father is teaching his son how to hunt falcons and securely capture them.
Bryan (Camdenton)
They're attached to the bird so they can carry him and keep him
chanc (CMS)
The child is getting taught how to knit, and a falcon landed nearby
Thotyerra (Missouri)
The man is teaching his son about hunting and using the bird as an object to teach him how to knot things.
Unicorn P.S. Z.Lyles (Kansas city Missouri)
I think that this is about these people finding their bird.
no one (colorado)
I think it is a parent and child and the parent is teaching the child skills to survive. I also think that the bird might be a pet or an animal they are trying to create a connection with.
will jack (camdenton)
they have no home they are poor
Micheal Scott (dunder mifflin paper company)
I believe this is in northern Asia and the father is teaching his son maybe about falcon hunting and how to handle the Falcons.
K (CMS)
I believe that this picture shows a parent tying their pet bird to their child to make sure it won't fly away. They could also be hunting and the bird could be helping them.
Lucy (CMS)
I think they are falcon hunting. unless that bird is a different type of bird.
McKenzie (CMS)
I think that father is teaching the son young how to live in the wilderness and take care of himself.
Tyler (CMS)
I think this is a father teaching his son how to tie a knot
viele (CMS)
I think that the father is teaching the son how it feels to be in the wild. Also showing him to tie a rope and that bird is probably a pet of theres.
Jasmin Adams (camdenton missouri)
I think it is a parent and child and the parent is teaching the child skills to survive. I also think that the bird might be a pet or an animal they are trying to create a connection with.
Hannah (CMS)
I think it is a man with his son showing him how to do simple things in the wilderness. I also feel that the man is trying to show him tribal things that he knows.
Izzy Blackman (Camdenton, Missouri)
I think it is a parent and child and the parent is teaching the child skills to survive. I also think that the bird might be a pet or an animal they are trying to create a connection with.
Savanah (Camdenton)
It looks like the father of this child is teaching the son to hunt for birds and the father is teaching him to tie the rope.
Mrs. Boyen 5th grade (San Antonio, TX)
Father or close family member teaching the child skills, maybe hunting. They could even be training the hawk to be a carrier. We think maybe they are in China/Tibet. It looks cold.
4th grade GT (Charleston, SC)
We think it is a father and child that are trying to bond with a hawk. They are bonding with the hawk so they can hunt with it. It takes place in northern, rocky mountains (maybe Russia or China, or Mongolia). They have traditional clothing on except for modern day tennis shoes. The hawk is leashed. We think it maybe cold or winter because of the clothing and the environment.
Valentina (West Hartford, CT)
@4th grade GT I completely agree. As you stated, the father and son are bonding with the hawk but it could always be that they are bonding as well, with the father teaching this lesson as a helpful skill for his son.
Ms. Boyer (3rd grade Winston-Salem NC)
We think it is a Father and a boy. They are in China. We think this because of how their clothes look. We think it is cold outside because they have coats and animal fur hats. We think they are on a rocky mountain. They might be hiking or they might be hunting for another animal. It might be a pet bird that is trained to catch another animal. The red pouch might be filled with bird seed. Maybe it is food for the man and the boy.
Ms. Boyer (3rd grade Winston-Salem NC)
In this picture, we think maybe a Father and a Son are on a rocky hill. We think it is winter because they are wearing a fur hat and a jacket. The sky looks grey in the background. We notice a falcon right by them. We think it may be in India based on their clothes and their skin tone. They look like they are tying something to the bird. Maybe to have the bird send a message. Maybe they are lost and are sending the bird to get help. They could be using the string or rope to climb the rocky mountain or hill. They may be trying to get to the other side of the mountain. They are maybe taking a break because they have walked so far. Maybe this is a mine and they are taking a break from working. Maybe they are getting ready to camp for the night.
MItchell McGinn (NH)
I think this is in Mongolia, and the father may be teaching the son how to control a carrier bird. The rope is intentionally attached to the bird so I don't think they were trying to catch it, rather had already had the bird, to begin with.
Kevin Lemieux (Byfield, MA)
The man is teaching the boy a new skill to use.
Shane (MA)
I think the people are in Mongolia and the father is showing a common tradition that goes on in their culture. It also looks like it is a cold day because they're bundled up in clothing. The bird is a symbol for them or something like that.
Cassienne LeVan (Massachusetts)
I think the falcon is being used to scare off other animals like snakes, and that's why it's leg is on a chain.
Nathan (Auburn , NH)
A father or older brother teaching the youth how to tame a Falcon in Mongolia. The way they are dressed seems to blend in with the surrounding nature to camouflage themselves in a hunting manner.
Louisa Purinton (Massachusetts)
This article is depicted somewhere in Mongolia. It shows a boy and his father outside in the woods somewhere. It looks like the falcon is attached by a string which would mean that he is trying to teach his son how to hunt for certain types of birds. It also looks like they have been walking or hiking with the shoes they are wearing. Overall, I think that this picture shows two people hunting in the Mongolia woods.
Maddie Grimes (Massachusetts)
I think this a father teaching a young boy how to hunt for falcons, teaching how to tie the knots. It also look cold where they are based on the fur they are wearing on their heads and body.
Elisa DiGiammo (The Governors Academy)
I think this image is depicting hunters waiting to shoot prey in Mongolia. Specifically eagle hunters. They are patiently watching for eagles and crouching down to be "lowkey"
Eljay (Byfield,MA)
The young man and boy look like they are trekking in the mountains, where they have stumbled across this bird and the young man is teaching the boy to control
Jeffrey Wang (Massachusetts)
I think the photo took place in Mongolia. The older one is the father and the younger one is the son. I think the falcon is their pet because it is just standing there (not afraid of human) and there's a string around its claw. He might use the falcon for hunting animals.
Fern P (Putney Central School)
I think this is in Mongolia, and these people are eagle hunters (a tradition where people use eagles to hunt, and sometimes go to big competitions to show off their birds). I say this because the way they are dressed (fur hats, embroidered clothing) reminds me of Mongolian attire, and the tamed eagle on a rope suggests they are, in fact, eagle hunters. I think the man is showing his young child how to fly an eagle. This is a tradition usually reserved for men, but that was recently broken and a girl actually won the eagle-hunting competition, so maybe the young child in this picture is his daughter.
Tiger (Byfield)
Father or teacher is teaching a kid to learn how to control a falcon.
Andy, Philip, Justin (Seoul)
I think these people are Mongolian because people from Mongolia wear furry hats. I think they are camping because they are wearing sports shoes. I think they are trying to catch a bird because they are tying a bird's leg with a rope and rock.
John (Massachusetts)
A mongolian man is teaching his child how to hold and use a hawk to its full effect. The man is wearing Lebron's and the child has a red bag with special patterns on it. Both are wearing a lot of fur clothes and hats which suggest hunting is important to them.
Reanne B (MA)
A father and his son are hunting somewhere in Mongolia. They were able to catch the falcon with the rope they are holding.
Sadie P (California)
A man in what may be northeast Asia is flying his falcon. He is taking his young son and appears to be showing the boy how the leash works. It looks like it is cold out, since they are wearing furs, and the terrain looks rocky and mountainous.
BullardISD4 (Bullard Texas)
A Native American is teaching his son how to train a hawk to help them hunt for the animals they kill to eat.
A.M (Virginia, Alexandria)
A father and son are going on a hiking trip and took there bird with them, and the father is making sure the leash on the bird is tried tight enough so the bird doesn't fly away because the father is crouching down fixing the leash that's on the bird.
Jeffrey (Alexndria VA)
I think that they are getting ready for a traditional meeting, with people living in the modern world still doing thing from their ancestors because I can see some old clothes but I can see the man with Lebron shoes and the man is tying the little kids shoes.
H (W)
I think the man is helping the little boy because the boy is sitting on the ground and the man is kneeling.
wil (tc william)
I think that they are helping the bird because the bird is not moving
IDRIS (Alexdria)
i think it is a man tieing a bird to his son so the bird will not leave or fly away
Kalimullah A (Alexandria VA)
I think the man is going for hunting, and the boy might get lost so he is tying the bird to the baby because the string is connected to the baby and the bird.
Fern P (Putney Central School)
@Kalimullah A I also think the man is going hunting with his eagle, but I don't agree with him tying the child to his bird. I don't think that the string is actually attached to the baby, (his arm is hanging down, not in his father's hands), but I can see that it kind of looks like the man is tying the rope around around the child's wrist. I can see that you thought about it a lot, and I think you came up with some really good ideas. :)
Sterling (Alexandria)
I believe that these two kids are alone and trying to make it throughout the harsh cold winter days.
Olven (Minnie Howard (TC))
i think the guy is trying to tie the rope to the kid hand because its tied to the bird so they might not want to let the bird go
nichole (CA)
(this is a joke) “Dad, why are you doing this?” the little boy asked. “Just wear it, son. You’ll see. You’ll look very handsome.” After a few more moments of fussing around with buttons, the father stepped back and sighed in satisfaction. “See?” the father said, holding up a mirror. “You look just dashing, son.” The son peered into the mirror and examined himself. “Dad…” he began. “Yes, son? What is it?” the father asked, eager to hear his son’s approval. “I look horrible…”
Brendan (Alexandria)
I think that a father and a son are hunting and they come by a bird that has the string on the bird's foot so the people are stopping and trying to let the bird free
Ahnaf (Minnie Howard (TC))
I think they recreated a old family photo its got older looking things in the photo but then has new generation sneakers and the added touch of the bird and the traditional style clothing proves that its most likely a recreation. The dad is teaching his son how to hunt with a hawk and is adding a string to its talons so it doesn't fly too far and gets lost. He also gave the son some red cloth to protect his hands from the talons.
Ritzy (TC Williams)
I think they are going for a hiking or are going somewhere because they are outside.
Brandon S (Alexandria,Virginia)
I think this man and his son is cold and they are setting up a tent because they are wearing heavy fur clothes and the man is tying something.
Robert (pcs)
i think that they are natig a marikein and the are youseing the brid ot hunt
Color Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
We discussed and the sneaker is very distracting in the photo/thought provoking because of the combination of modern clothing (sneaker) and what they are wearing (tribal clothing). It looks like they are preparing to go for a walk or hunt with the hawk. Preparing for a tribal gathering.
nofrills (canada)
The old Mongols, nomadic hunters who used to live around the area we now call Mongolia, used ospreys, eagles, hawks to hunt for food, take their fur and use them as hats. This is a dad and son whose ancestors were part of the ancient Mongol civilization. The dad is teaching his son how to hunt with a hawk and is adding a string to its talons so it doesn't fly too far and gets lost. He also gave the son some red cloth to protect his hands from the talons.
Lee 5th period (Bullard)
Father and or brother are hiking in the mountains. It cold outside and they have stopped to make sure the bird is to on the leash and take a break.
daddy (essj)
+it looks like ther about to go hunt and eat food
AlexanderD (Byfield, MA)
An Asian family sitting in the wild with their family pet. Gotta be Mongolian man. Go Mongolia!
Katie (Lynnfield,MA)
This Mongolian father is teaching his son how to hunt with a hawk. The son has a red padded glove to protect his hand from the hawk's talons. This man is wearing sneakers from America that are being sold in this country. They are trying to stay warm with lots of fur
Destiny (The Governors Academy)
You can tell that the picture is in a cold environment. I am guessing that the older man is a father with his child celebrating a holiday. The area does not look American, so maybe it is somewhere in Europe or Asia. The clothing worn looks very traditional, and the bird also seems to be important.
nofrills (canada)
@Destiny I will say that the holiday is probably Nauryz.
Foster (Byfield, MA)
Kazakhs in Mongolia are hunting for food using an eagle to locate pray.
SGarbo (Harrisburg, PA)
An eskimo father ties a bird to his eskimo son to fly him to American to get a pair of Lebrons
Color Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
@SGarbo wow! you noticed the sneaker also!
Tian R (PCS)
It looks like there is a man and his son hiking with a hawk. The clothes they are wearing look like clothes that are not worn in the U.S.. It looks like the man is tying a rope that is around the hawks ankle.
Shantanu (Byfield Massachusetts)
I believe it is a child and his father who are khazks, but are falcons in Mongolia.
Grace (MA)
The two people pictured are father and son. They are preparing to go hunting with the bird connected to the rope connected to the bird. The fur and surroundings look as if the image is set in a mountainous region.
phoebe w (pcs)
I think the people are part of a reenactment group so people can learn about the past. I say this because they are wearing native american clothing but I don't think there native american because of there modern day shoes. I also see a very cute hock with them.
Raina (Vermont)
This image takes place in Mongolia. You can see the bird next to them, which is used for eagle hunting. It's a tradition in Mongolia, and the man and what is probably his child are wearing traditional Mongolian Garments.
miles p (putney central)
This appears to be a photo of a man and son with their pet hawk. I think they may be tethering the hawk to something, judging by the tie in the rope. They also might be training the hawk for some purpose.
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
Nathaniel I think that the dad is teaching the son about the hawk. and it's probably there pet because they have a rope attached to it. they might use it for hunting or something. they have really cool hats on too.
Berk (Turkey)
It should be in Mongolia Kazakhstan area. This should be like a tribal thing . It should be a hunting a falcon
cole nelson (pcs)
This is a photo of a father in a foreign country teaching his child how to hunt with a falcon. he has a rope tide to its leg and they will hunt with it later.
Mrs. Hocke's Class (aka Greggg) (Fort Collins, CO)
I think that image is about a man and his son taking a walk with a hawk on a chilly day. The image shows a cold, desolate, rocky mountainside background with very little snow and the lighting looks very grey. There are two people wearing fluffy fur hats accompanied by a hawk which could possibly be a pet or symbol of their culture. The picture seems to be in a more modern time because the older man is wearing classic high-top basketball shoes. They have an Asian look, and they are wearing a specific item of clothing that is perhaps unique to their culture. The hawk could be used for overhead view in case there is an animal or predator ahead and can’t be seen from eye level. Overall, these details we noticed make us think that this could be people in Asia with a trained hawk.
txcajunpepper (Arlington, TX)
My first period student believe... Man and son are attempting to catch bird for food or to treat it. Man is patching hole in son's clothes They are traveling somewhere. Native American people mountain climbing Little boy got injured Trying to train the bird On a mountain because it is sloped In North American or Asia because of shoe choice Cold outside due to their clothing choice
Mary Ellen Barry (Westport CT)
We think that the man is teaching his son some sort of skill that involves hunting with a bird. We think that perhaps this picture was taken in Mongolia.
miles p (putney central)
@Mary Ellen Barry I agree, i think they may be training the hawk to hunt.
BullardISD2 (Bullard Texas)
The man is showing his kid how to catch the bird. #itscoldoutside
JPTal (Harrisburg, PA)
After getting dunked on all day, man ties child to a falcon with instructions to send him to his mother.
Robert (pcs)
@JPTal i do not ager with you that is not nicde
8th ELA (MA)
We think there is a dad and a son in the wilderness trying to survive. They caught the bird with the string. We think that the weather is cold because they are wearing fur hats.
cole nelson (pcs)
@8th ELA this bird is used to hunt. i saw a documentary about these falcons.
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
@8th ELA where do you think they are in the world?
Raina (Vermont)
@8th ELA I think this is actually for Mongolian Eagle Hunting. You can tell because of their clothing, their ethnicity, and the bird that they are from Mongolia and that this man is teaching a little boy or girl who is probably his son or daughter the traditional Mongolian Custom. The string is used to keep the bird until they are ready for it to fly. eagle hunting is usually done in the mountains, so it makes sense that it would be cold.
Lee 1 st period (Bullard)
Based on the picture its cold outside, they are hunting in the mountains. They are bothers. The youngest is starring off into space. During there hunting /they stopped to untie a knot.
8th ELA (MA)
The 2 people in the picture are father and son. They are in the mountains probably somewhere in Asia. It is in modern times, evidenced by the Lebrons the dad is wearing. The bird seems like as pet, as it is not flying away.
8th Grade Varmahlíðarskóli (Iceland)
Brothers are traveling home from a mountain with a falcon that they are training. They look like they are in northern part of Asia.
King Isaac (South Florida)
I think he is tying the little boy's shoes. It probably feels cold because they're wearing coats and fur hats.
Ubah Ali (Ottawa)
In my opinion,a father teaches his son how to hunt with a falcon;I see the bird and the string tied to the birds legs so the bird cannot fly away. The man is the father of the boy;I know this because of the way he treats the boy- with kindness, and tenderness. The weather in the this picture is cool and cloudy.Father and leather jackets. The bird is beside the boy. They are on stony grounds. This is a touching scene of a loving family.
Amani Abdo (Ottawa)
26- March- 2019 In my opinion, this picture shows a father and a son. The father is training the falcon and the son to be used to each other and they are in rocky area and the weather looks cold. First, I expect the man in the picture is a father because of the different age this shows us he is a father and the most importantly I can see that he is afraid for his son. I am a mother and I can see that. Second, the clothes show us how cold it is. There are fur on hats and on jackets wich tilting us it is cold weather and also the clothes are special for hunting. Finally, they are in rocky area because I see stones around them. It's a good place for hunting and you can probably find prey and also the father is wearing comfortable sport shoes for easy woking. In my opinion, this picture about father training the falcon and son to be used to each other. The father is concerned about his son.
shane (sk) (port orchard)
the father or brother would be tying a string to the rock so his falcon wouldn't fly away to keep it with him and his son. what makes me say that is because if you look close to the fathers foot then you'll see that he tied it to a rock... its not that dark out but maybe he needs a break from walking. it also looks could out with there thick hats their wearing.
prosper (SKHS Port Orchard)
it looks like they are traveling some where during the winter
Trevor (SKHS Port Orchard)
In this photo a man is giving his son a hawk to hold. Both are wearing a similar attire, and the string that he man is tying to his son is also tied to the hawk. The man is wearing joggers while the kid is wearing boots.
Josh R. (South Kitsap High School)
I believe that based off of their attire, these are nomads. It seems as though they are hunting, but mistakenly caught an eagle with their trap, and are releasing it.
Haiden (SKHS Port Orchard)
Two boys are hanging together, maybe brothers, father and son, or friends, from Mongolia. I believe they’re from Mongolia because of their clothes and the way the hawk is associated with them.
Eric (Port Orchard WA.)
In the photo there is a man, a child, and a bird (Falcon i believe). They are wearing a specific style of clothing with a little modern thing in there, the shoes specifically. The adult is either the father or older brother to the child. I think the child is being taught something about the bird about how to use the bird as an asset to help them. I also think the bird could be trained seeing as it is content sitting there with the people.
Hailey (Port Orchard SK)
This picture shows a father and son. The Father is teaching his son how to handle the hawk and most likely send letters.
Emily (Port orchard SKHS)
A Dad is trying to have fun with his son and teach him about their culture. And trying to show him the outdoors and what its like for them out there.
Jack (SKHS Port Orchard)
I believe what's happening on this picture is that these are normal people which have history in a country (Probably an Asian country because of their race) and they are celebrating by wearing traditional cloths and maybe doing a ritual thing of sending a letter by hawk. You can tell there modern because of the lebrons the dad is wearing.
Elena (skhs)
I think that the father/older brother is teaching the young boy to hunt for small rodents and such with a hawk as is common practice.
June (NY)
Maybe the father teach his son how to use eagle to deliver letters. The red bag in son's hand may made by his mom.
prosper (SKHS Port Orchard)
@June i think you are right but i also believe they are traveling somewhere and the are taking the eagle with them
Louis L (New York)
I infer that this picture shows the confrontation between the industrialized world and the nomads. With these shoes we understand that the modern world is not far. But, the way they probably hunt, with this bird, translates the big gap between these two cultures (modern and traditional ). Especially how the food comes very fast to our table.
Josh R. (South Kitsap High School)
@Louis L I think that's a wonderful way of thinking about this. It may be a bit of a reach to some, but I personally believe that the symbolism is quite direct.
Tian R (PCS)
@Josh R. It looks like a man and his son are on a hike with a hawk in the mountains.
Ramzia (New York)
I think based on their clothes, they are the nomads in the modern society. They wearing traditional clothes and older one wearing modern shoes. They are brothers. Older brother is teaching the younger brother how to hold a bird. I think the photograph took this picture to show people the combine of the cross cultural.
Hailey (Port Orchard SK)
@Ramzia I think the idea about the difference between culture is good inference
Jack (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Ramzia I automatically assumed that they were father and son but after reading your comment I looked back and saw that they very well may be brothers.
Lu (NY)
I think the environment is very cold. They caught a bird and tied its feet with a rope to prevent it from escaping. Maybe the man wants to give the bird to his brother as a pet.
Sam (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Lu The man and his son are in the mountains in an asian country. They have just tamed the hawk and are now tying his talon with rope. The father is teaching the son how to tie the rope correctly.
Yuna (new york)
It is a possible that this bird of prey represents a symbol of this nationality. This bird could be a relic, or a friend of the native people.
Yite Bao (New York)
I think the eagle can help them to expand their sight. Namely, they throw the eagle to the sky. The eagle can see more far away than the people can. The eagle can seek the food and water for the people. Such as the other little animals and rivers. Then the people and the eagle will share the preys and the water. The eagle is just like the assistant to help the people. The people maybe also believe in the eagle.
Eric (Port Orchard WA.)
@Yite Bao Yes I think you are on the right track, because the bird seems comfortable with people or at least these people. The thing I am is it domesticated to a point or just tamed.
May (New York)
The picture show people are wearing traditional clothes. They can be group of nomad because of his shoes and clothes doesn't match with clothes . Maybe he take a shoes from somewhere. I infer person who is older try to rescue his brother. By using a bird as a navigator.
JIACHENG (NYC)
I think there is a big brother who is teaching his brother how to hunt with eagle. Maybe this is their traditional hunting method, especially in winter.
zzzzzjh (NY)
I can infer that the father is teaching his son how to hunt with an eagle. They may be nomad, and the little guy may be too young to understand the meaning of doing so, he seems to be a little bit numb. However, the shoes that father wears are pretty fashionable, which is kind of weird.
Kexu Shen (NY)
I think they are brothers from a nomad family, and the older guy are teaching or showing how to manage their pet - a bird of prey- to show their close relationship between human and animals.
yue (newyork)
The older man is tying the string on the young guy's wrist, and teach him how to use the bird to hunting.
Trevor (SKHS Port Orchard)
@yue what makes you think so?
Ashawnee (Alexandria)
I infer that the man is about to take the little boy to fly a kite or he is tying a rope against the little boy while they climb up the hill
Michael (Virginia)
I infer that a father and son are hiking up a mountain and has a bird tied to a rock so it does not fly away.
Mrs. Barrett's Group (Batavia, NY)
Michael: I think they are Native American. They are tying a string on a bird. There is a little baby. There is rocks around them. I think the brother is tying the bird to the baby. They have fur on them. They look they are by a river because of their shoes. Sonny: They are at a place that is cold because of all the fur and clothing. The man is teaching the baby how to use the bird as a pet. The man's shoes look modern time. The hats have a lot of fur on them. The bird is a hawk. Jamari: What I see is a boy (I think it's a boy) and a baby (maybe a girl or a boy). They have been in this mountain field for a while. I think the babies coat is made from an animal. The hats look like it came from a raccoon. They have a rope on a peregrine Falcon because they might use the Peregrine Falcon to hunt. I think the Falcon lives on the mountain which would explain the rocks. It looks like they are out in the wild. I see they don't have the glove for hunting so it might just be a pet. Mrs. Barrett: I think the picture is somewhere in Asia. They could be in the Himalayan Mountains. They have tamed a falcon and probably use it to kill animals for meat. The father is starting to train his child early in how to use a falcon. I think it is modern times because the man's sneakers. They use the hides from the animals they kill for clothing.
Dre (Alexandria Virginia)
In this picture i can infer that the man has caught a bird and is tying it up so it won't fly away and i can see that they are on a mountain
Henry (Alexandria)
I infer that they are wearing traditional clothing and they might be on a mountain because there is dirt and rocks and also that it might be cold because all the fur they are using and because of the eagle i think either they are in adventure or he is hunting and the eagle leads him to were the animals are at.
moaaz (Alexandria)
I can infer that the father and son are in a tribe hiking a mountain because they have a bird on a string and training his son to hunt, they are a native tribe out to hunt and the bird is their pet.
Emily (Port orchard SKHS)
@moaaz I agree with your comment.
Tran (VA)
I can infer that this picture is about father and son, they are hunting in the mountain. Because there is a kid and a man, a man take care of the kid, and it looks like a man showing a kid how to hunt. Both of them looks like those people lived in the mountain outside of the Village because of the clothes that they're wear.
Osman (Alexandria)
I can infer that it is cold because of the clothes and they speak another language not English. and I think that they were hunting the bird because they have a rope attached to it👑
christopher (virginia)
I infer that the man and the little kid represent a culture because of their clothes and also based on my knowledge i can conclude that the man is trying to send a message with the eagle and his teaching the little kid on how to tied the string.
5th - Lee (Bullard)
This picture makes me infer that its cold. There clothes designs indicate they may speak a language other than english. They are resting because they have been hiking in the Mountains. They have a rope attached to the bird so it doesn't escape.
Eva Boyle (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
This picture shows a man and toddler together outside. The man and boy are both wearing a traditional clothing of some culture, because of the similar but unique fabrics and designs on their clothes. They are probably in a cold climate, because they are wearing coats, pants, and furs. The man looks like he may be teaching the boy. He is holding a string that is attached to a bird's foot. These people could be modern day native Americans, which could explain their clothing and why they are working with a bird in the wild. This picture could not have been taken too long ago, because of it's high quality and if you notice the man's shoes, he is wearing regular day to day sneakers. Maybe this man's ancestors were native Americans, and he was passed down their traditional practices. He might be teaching his son about the culture of their ancestors. He could be using the string on the bird for training purposes.
Ava (AOSE)
This picture shows a man and a young child wearing fur hats and heavy coats. There is also a bird next to the child. This picture was taken outdoors, most likely in a cold climate, because of the warm clothing the people are wearing. When I first looked at this, I considered that the people in the picture were Native Americans but I later dismissed that thought when I noticed the shoes that the man is wearing. Native Americans live off the land and those shoes are produced by a man-made company and sold in stores and online. Perhaps these people are playing outside and the man is making a bag for the child to carry stuff in. I do not know why they would be outside because it looks like they were able to afford nice clothing so they probably are not homeless. And also, the people also are in an area that does not look like the typical backyard so I do not know where they are either.
Mrs. Lee (Bullard)
The father and son have been hiking. It is cold outside. They have stopped to rest. There is a rope attached to the hawk so it wont fly away. They look like they are in the mountains.
Fiona (pcs)
In this image there appears to be a father and son in a rocky landscape along with their bird companion. The father and son are appear to be wearing rather warm garments along with fur hats. I believe they are teaching the bird to hunt or out hunting with the bird as it does't appear to be distressed to have the thin rope around it's foot. I also infer this as in Mongolia some people train eagles to hunt for them, even if this isn't an eagle I wouldn't be surprised if this bird was being used for that purpose.
Larissa (Pcs)
There appears to be a man, a child and some type of bird. The weather may be cold because the child is wearing a hat, coat and boots and the father is as well, it could also be a part of their culture. There is a rope on the leg of the bird and the end of the rope is in the fatherś hand so they are either rescuing the bird or they are hunting.
Ava (AOSE)
@Larissa Good observations. I didn't even think that the people in the picture could be hunting. Good job backing up your responses with evidence from the picture.
Kahin (Ottawa)
In this picture, I strongly believe there is a father and his son hunting on top of the mountain. Firstly, in the picture I see a lot of rocks in foreground and background of the picture, so I know they are not in the city. Secondly, I think the picture is located in an Asian country because of the jackets and the hats they are wearing. It looks like Asian traditional clothes. As I think the father is teaching the son how to hunt because of how the father is holding and tying the rope. Also you can see how the kid is paying attention to what his father is doing. In addition there is also an eagle sitting right beside the son. In my opinion I think it is fall time because of how the weather looks and also the trees do not have leafs. In conclusion, father is teaching his son traditional hunting on top of the valley.
cristian (SKHS Port Orchard)
there seems to be two kids on a mountains side during winter training a falcon how to hunt
Ava (AOSE)
@cristian What else can you find? Are there any other claims you can make based on the picture?
Rachel (SKHS Port Orchard)
I think that this photo is of a father and son and they are attempting to rescue a hawk. I think that it is set somewhere outside of the Unites States.
Eva Boyle (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Rachel I agree that this could be a photo of a father and son, but why do you think it is set somewhere outside of the United States? This could have taken place in a national park, untouched land, or reservation.
chance (south kitsap highschool)
It looks like a father and son hunting in the mountains.
eddie (wa)
@chance I like this photo.
Ava (AOSE)
@chance Try and support your claim with evidence in the picture. And is there anything else you can infer?
Taylor Moore (SKHS Port Orchard)
whats happening in this picture is that the father and the son are spending time together up some place rocky, because the two people are obviously close and their are rocks surrounding them. I don't think that the father and the son are hunting because it looks like their are a pair of gloves at the birds feet so i think they might be training the bird to hunt for them.
Dayshia (South East Junior High)
I believe that they are refugees running away from some war or conflict. They have on big layers and they are trying to hunt a bird. This might be their pet bird considering that it isnt flying away.
Jayse (SKHS highschool)
i think he is trying to set the bird free because there is a piece of rope tied up to the bird.
Eva Boyle (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Jayse Jayse, why in particular do you think that they are setting the bird free. Do you think it isn't possible that they could have captured the bird in the first place?
Lemar (SKHS Port Orchard)
this parent and child living in the midst of nature with their bird companion sitting on the hillside it seems they are wearing some clothing that symbolize their culture
Samuel Q (Port Orchard SKHS)
They are native people who are either hunting or helping birds.I assume they are poor because of the off brand Lebron James shoes he has on.The bird is tied down on a rope which makes me assume that they are freeing the bird. The area they are at is a cold area and they also live in a more rural part of town.
ellie (Washington)
i think they recreated a old family photo its got older looking things in the photo but then has new generation sneakers and the added touch of the bird and and the traditional style clothing proves that its most likely a recreation
Larissa (Pcs)
@ellie Now that I see this comment I agree
Emily (SKHS Port Orchard)
I believe this picture is of a father and son out in the mountains hunting. The father is tying some sort of rope to a bird and showing the son how to do this. They must be hunting for birds or other animals too. I am not sure of the specific location but I am guessing the mountains because of the rocks and nature and also they are wearing large fur hats meaning it could be cold.
wich9543 (SKHS Port Orchard)
the man looks like hes trying to keep the eagle from flying away and i seems like it must be cold since they both have fur hats
Jordan mitchell (port orchard)
i think they are freeing the bird and then leaving
George (SKHS Port Orchard)
a man is helping his son set up a trap of some sort to catch an animal
Abdu (Ottawa)
I strongly believe this picture is about father and son. They are hunting in the mountain. I believe that, because I see there is a man and kid are so close to each other. In the same time the man trying to show the kid how to hunt, because they holding a bird to show them where can find the animal. In addition those people are on the mountain outside of the Village because I see the is a rocks and grass around them. In addition this picture taking place in the summertime because, they are wearing running shoes and the weather looking very nice.Finely because of the relationship between the kind and men and the same clothes which they wearing I believe this picture is about dad and son they hunting outside of the country.
Mariah (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Abdu I agree with most of what you said, however it seems to me that it looks like the weather is quite cold. This is because the two are in coats and warm hats, also their faces are pink as if they are cold and the weather is chilly.
Taylor Moore (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Abdu what about the gloves at the feet of the bird?
Inés and Michelle (Madrid, Spain)
Hi! We don't really know where it's located, they are in the mountains and we think that it's cold and during winter because of the type of clothes. We think that they are hunting or training the bird to hunt because the father is tying up the falcon.
Lemar (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Inés and Michelle that's a cool observation i didn't realize the parent was tying up the bird
Ashlynn (Port Orchard)
I think the picture is of a dad and son who looks to have caught a type of bird. I say that because the dad is holding a rope that is attached to the birds leg.
Emily (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Ashlynn I agree that they are trying to catch the bird. I did not notice at first that the rope was tied around the birds feet but now I realize this is probably what they are doing. I think they are father and son too because of how close they are and the father is teaching the son.
Mamoun (Ottawa)
I believe in this picture that the man is trying to teach the boy primitive hunting methods. At first I think they are in a mountainous area. The reason for this is that there are rocks around them and they wear fur hats, which means they are in the high area. Second, the presence of falcon in the picture is sure that they are intending to catch birds because the falcon is used in hunting birds. In addition, they wear their own traditional dress except for the man's shoes, which seems unconventional and I guess the reason is that he intends to run behind the falcon to catch the prey.In the end I think that the man is trying to teach the child how to face the various difficulties of life and all that the child needs to move forward in this harsh nature.
Jabari (SKHS port orchard)
I believe that the dad is teaching his son how to hunt for birds but i also believe that is how they normally dress and they are probably helping a bird and is more than likely a pet.
Dacoda (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Jabari I don't believe that the bird is a pet i believe that the string is there to keep it from escaping
Noorzayee Elaha (Ottawa ON)
The picture posted March 24/ 2019 shows a father with his son, hunting in mountain area. Firstly, their relationship is father and child because they are close together and father wants tide the eagle’s rope in his son’s arm. Secondly, I think they are from Kazakhstan country because they wear traditional clothes of Kazakhstan. Thirdly, they are on the mountain because in the background the picture shows a lot of stone around their.Fourthly, they are hunters because the have a bird that hunters use that to hunting some small animals like fox and some birds. Finally, the father and son are hunting in the mountain area.
Frank (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Noorzayee Elaha I agree with you because the clothes does look very similar to that of traditional clothing made by the people of Kazakhstan.
Troy (SKHS Port Orchard, WA)
The two natives are on a hike and they're out in the wild hunting for food and the dad is teaching the little kid survival tricks and various things.
Jordan mitchell (port orchard)
@Troy i thought he was freeing the bird but i think you right
Anthony (SKHS Port Orchard)
I see that the father and son are dressed in very warm clothes, leading me to believe they live in a mountainous area, and that the dad is teaching the son how to hunt by using the hawk as a spotter, but in case the hawk gets any ideas of escape, they've tied a string to it's feet, that also has boots on it.
Makenzie (SKHS Port Orchard)
the picture seems to show an Asian father and son. They are possible up in the mountains, because of their fur clothes. they seem to be hunting, the father is showing the son how to tie something for a trap. It looks like they caught a bird, the rope that the father is tying is connected to the birds foot. The father also appears to be wearing sports shoes or something like that.
Tommie (SKHS Port Orchard)
In the photo it seems that the man and his son on the mountain side, are practicing some type of cultural activity unique to them. It seems that they are hunting. The man and the boy are dressed in fur so I can infer that it is cold where they are at.
cristian (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Tommie yeah seems about right
Jaden (SKSH Port orchard)
To me is seems like an elder of the child id teaching the child how to use the bird as a hunting tool.
Harold Vickers (SKHS Port Orchard)
This image shows a parent with their child, tending to them but soon to be hunting or carrying on some kind of activity that they must do everyday.
Samuel Q (Port Orchard SKHS)
@Harold Vickers I agree with your statement.I think you need to elaborate.
Hunter Carlson (SKHS Port Orchard)
In this picture, you can see what appears to be Native Americans that are most likely hunting but, met a friendly eagle that wanted to take a picture. I think this because that they're in the mountains, a great place for hunting and normally eagles are in the mountains. The man is also rocking LeBron's and wearing them in the mountains.
Amaya (Port Orchard)
In this image it appears there is a child and older man which we can infer that they are father and son from their similar appearance. Judging by the attire they are dressed in we can assume they are of some other nationality. It appears they have a rope tied to the falcons foot and are doing something with it.
Jillian (SKHS Port Orchard)
In this photo, I think that this father and son are hunting. They both have some traditional gear on to hunt and they have a hunting bird with them. They appear to be in the mountains based on the rocky ground and types of plants around them. The father is attaching a thin rope onto the birds leg so it cannot get away. They appear to be Asian so I assume based on their clothing that they are somewhere in Asia on a mountain.
Ronny Sorter (SKHS Port Orchard WA)
I believe that they are going to a pow-wow in modern times. many native cultures still dress up in traditonal native clothing and get together in the form of a pow wow. it would be in modern times because of the quality of the image and he is wearing lebrons.
Dylan Nokell (SKHS Port Orchard)
It looks like a father and son are getting ready to let a bird go out and fly. It seems as if the bird is tied to a rope but I don’t believe that they would let it fly with a rope attached because if the bird went to far I think it would hurt for the bird.
Lori (SKHS port orchard)
@Dylan Nokell that's what i thought
damian (alexandria va)
I infer that they are going hiking in there country and they are putting a rope on the bird to stay connect to the people wild they are hiking.
masoumeh (attawa)
In my opinion , this picture shows father who is teaching to his son to hunt because there are some tools like rope and bird here. Two people have worn traditional dress look like Turkman people in a rocky maybe mountain area in East of Asia. The weather is cold because both of them use the warm cloths. Father tries to teach somethings about hunt in their own traditional way. young boys have to teach everything where are in childhood. Therefore children grow up with lot of experiences that can use these in future life even though maybe hard for them.
Terra (Bullard, TX)
The boy is hurt his dad is helping him. They are wearing warm clothes because it is cold outside. They have been on a hike in the mountains with there pet hawk.
Emma (AOSE)
I think this picture is showing a father and son, and the father might be showing his son hunting skills. I thought this because of the background of the picture. They appear to be in a hilly landscape, and there is a bird of prey who the man has tied to a rope. He may be using the bird for hunting. The two people in the photo also are wearing animal furs, which indicates that hunting may be an integral part of their culture and people.
Rachel (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Emma I also think that the photo is of a father and son. I agree.
Fasil (Ottawa)
I strongly believe this picture shows a father and his son are hunting in a top of a mountain in Mongolia, the father is teaching his kid how to hunt. The reason why I say they are hunting is primarily they have a hunting bird and secondly they possess rope or the string. As I can see they are in a mountain in summer time as seen the dry grass and the rocks in their surrounding. They also dress with traditional Mongolian attire with that special hut that protects them from the windy weather. They are father and son as they look like and the age gub between them besides they are also from Mongolia because of the specific physical or facial appearance and the special traditional dress they wore. To conclude the 2 persons are hunting in some part of the village moreover the father is teaching his son as that is the only way of survival in the community.
Herson (TC Williams High School, Alexandria, VA)
I infer that the child is looking at something interesting, also the hawk. And the father is tying up the hawk for it cannot escape.
Jenifer (Alexandria)
In this picture there is a man, a boy and a bird they are outside and i think there is cold because they are dressed warmly.
abdiaziz (ottowa onterio)
I strongly believe that this picture which is posted on The New York Times the 25th of March 2019, that the people on the picture are hunting. Firstly the people are hunting because they are in the mountains outside in the countryside. also they are holding a falcon bird which is very strong support since the falcon bird is used widely for the hunting purposes.Secondly I think the two people are a father and his son because they look like the same moreover the way that the father is leaning to the young one shows they are related. Finally I think they are in Mongolia because of the hat they are wearing which looks like the traditional hat that they wear in mongolia traditionally and the way they look in there physical appearance. In conclusion people go for hunting most of the time so that they enjoy their time out and get fresh food in an open fresh air.So it is good to have a fresh air once a year in order to top up your energy for the coming year.
Makenzie (SKHS Port Orchard)
@abdiaziz i agree with you. What makes you think that it was posted on the New York times on that day? Have you seen the article?
Rachel (AOSE)
This appears to be in the cold mountanous region of China. Both the father and son appear to be Asian and are dressed in large coats with fur collars. The father appears to be a falconer as he is holding onto a tethered falcon (probably Peregrine).
payton (skhs port orchard)
@Rachel i agree they do look like they're from asia, and the father being someone who deals with falcons.
Herson (Alexandria)
I can infer that the father is teaching his son how to hunt because of the clothing and the father has a rope in his hand.
Ben (VA)
I infer that the father is going on hike with his son because they are not at home and they have warm clothes.
Emma (AOSE)
@Ben Why would they bring a falcon on a hike with them? What reason is there?
Magali (France)
Thé father could be teaching his son to hunt
Anthony (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Magali, you might be right bt I also see they are wearing warm clothing in a possibly mountainous area in order to not freeze their bodies.
Amaya (Port Orchard)
@Magali Interesting answer. However what in this image makes you believe they are hunting?
Megan (South Kitsap High School)
@Magali isn't the son a little bit too young to start hunting, the bird doesn't look harmed or anything like that.
Pablo N. (France)
A father places a rope on his son. The eagle takes the rope to make the kid fly. And the father runs with his new shoes to follow the eagle and his son.
Emma (AOSE)
@Pablo N. Why would they be trying to make the child fly?
Olivia M (AOSE)
In this picture, there is a man and a son dressed warmly crouched next to a bird which appears to be a falcon. I️ think that these people live in a rural and cold area, for their clothing appears to be made from animal furs. I️ also see a rope tied around the falcon's leg which leads me to believe that it is a pet. On top of this, I️ think these people live in a mountain range because the terrain surrounding them is rocky.
aspen (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Olivia M i agree with all of that. the bird looks like a pet but i do think it is a hawk not a falcon.
Dylan Nokell (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Olivia M I figured it was cold outside too, but if you look at the fathers shoes they don't seem like they would keep his feet very warm as they look very breathable. Then again this could be all he has.
E. Gordon Berroa (New York City)
I really appreciate everyone's responses! I really like how the image represents how families bond by participating in cultural traditions. It's a heartwarming image and makes me reflect on my own family traditions.
Marvin Ridge Middle School/Mrs. Beitsch (Waxhaw, NC)
We believe that the two people pictured are of Eskimo descent because of their cultural apparel and they have Asian characteristics. We believe that the bird could be a pet because it appears calm and is sitting close to the two people. There is also a rope that appears to be tied to the bird which also leads us to believe that it may be tame/pet. The setting appears to be in a colder climate because of their warm clothing and the plants appear to be out of season. Another reason it could be a colder climate is becasue Esikimo's are indigenous to colder climate.
beth (skhs)
it looks like they are doing a tribal tradition or reenactment of a tribal tradition. the reason i say that is because of the clothing that they are wearing. they also have a hawk with a leash on.
Gabriel (skhs)
There are two people that are sitting on a rocky hill with a hawk that is tied up and it looks like the older guy is at the other end of the rope about to do something with it. The people are also wearing things with animal fur. The older guy is wearing running shoes.
Dalia (Little Elm, Tx)
I think that the man and the boy are dressed in traditional clothing and they are getting ready to celebrate something that has to do with their culture.
Rachel (AOSE)
@Dalia The man is not dressed in entirely traditional clothing as he has relatively new running shoes on? Would this debunk your theory?
sean (skhs)
In this picture there are two people sitting on some kind of gravelly rocky hill in fur and trapper hats with a hawk that seems to be tied to the rope that is in the older persons hands the slightly older person is also wearing some kind of tennis shoes which stand out because they are the only green thing in the picture They could possibly be caring for the bird.
Oliver (SKHS)
It appears to be a parent and their child sitting down tying, or untying, a hawk. It could possibly be a parent teaching their child something.
trevor (skhs)
I believe that this image is depicting a father teaching his son how to care for a hawk properly, and safely. The father wants the son to be prepared as he grows up. Soon, the father will likely pass the Hawk on to the child as a sign of responsibility. There is also a bird next to them and there is a rope thing
Austyn (Port Orchard, WA)
It looks like the older kid is tying a string to the ankle of the bird. I say that because if you look closely and follow the string you can see it appears to be connected to the ankle of the bird. Both kids are wearing fur for some reason.
Forest (SKHS)
A parent and child, possibly of Tibetan origin, are undergoing a lesson of some kind, probably related to the falcon next to them. This is clear because of the leash on the falcon, and how the parent seems to be talking to the child.
Rebecca (SKHS Port Orchard)
The people in the photo are wearing thick furs. The older man has a pair of Lebron's on. There is also a falcon with rope wrapped around its leg. By their style of clothing, I'm assuming they are apart of a type of tribe.
Natalie (SK)
What I think is happening in this photo is that a man, possibly a father, is teaching a young boy how to maybe train the falco or save/help it with rope.
Ethan (SKHS)
I believe in this picture, the adult is teaching and introducing the child to the bird. The bird looks to be a falcon. It is possible that the bird is trained to hunt, and the adult may be teaching the child how to hunt with it, or just allowing it to keep company with the child.
dustin (south kitsap highschool)
There is a small boy and an older man who is either the small boys brother of father. The older one is doing something with the rope that is connected to the falcon. This could be some sort of hunting other tradition that runs in their culture. My guess would be that they are from a foreign country because the could be using the falcon for different things. I also can see that the small boy has no interest in what the older man is doing. I also noticed that the boy is wearing a fully traditional outfit that seems completely handmade but the older man is wearing shoes that are bought from a store.
Ryland (SKHS Port Orchard)
In this picture it looks like two Native Americans with an older brother figure teaching the younger child how to tie a rope to the birds leg to keep the bird from flying away. There is also a bird sitting right next to them. The photo looks like it could be a reenactment. The clothing tells me that the two kids are Native American because it looks cultural and the older boy does not look like a man because of his young looking face. I think tying a bird with a rope is a cultural thing. You can find where they are because of the items around like the rocks. It could be cold because they are wearing fury coats.
Kit (Ireland)
By the looks of things this may be Mongolia or the Steppes regions or maybe parts of Russia by the furs. It may be a lesson in falconry. It is a modern picture or photograph as the sneakers look recent enough. The cloth bag may be Tibetan or Mongolian. The child looks like he or she has been there before like this is everyday as they look very comfortable and relaxed.
landon (Port Orchard)
Some person is tying a falcon to a string that is around a baby and they’re wearing fur hats.
Christina (AOSE)
In this picture, it looks like a reanactment possible of something including Native Americans. The people look like they might be Native Americans, they have what looks like could be traditional clothing, but they modern day sneakers on. These people might be trying to preserve their past by retelling events that happened.
Michael (Port Orchard, WA)
@Christina not a very close reenactment since she's mesing with a modern rope with a steel clip :)
Forest (SKHS)
@Christina What draws you to think they are native american?

I see a falcon and two people a child both of them are wearing wool hats also there is a man and the man is wearing expensive shoes. 1.falcon 2.two people child and man 3.both wearing wool hats and the man is wearing expensive shoes
Jenna (Staten Island, New York)
This image above could be a older brother teaching his younger brother how to act like the Natives did back in the ancient times.
Natalie (SK)
@Jenna I agree because they're wearing a lot of feathers.
Olivia M (AOSE)
@Jenna What do you see that makes you say that the older person is teaching the younger one?
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
As we consider the relationship depicted here, a central theme appears to emerge: @skinny dubs see the child is being taught "how to care for a hawk properly, and safely.. to be prepared as he grows up." @James Carlsen sees this as an "older brother teaching his little brother the native culture and how to take proper care of animals." @Alex "teaching the son an old tradition" I am wondering what you see that makes you say that the older person is teaching the younger? Is it the gestures, expression, mood?
Oliver (SKHS)
@VTS Moderator i agree
Mikayla (Newport, NH)
- A falcon - A little boy and a man - They are wearing very heavy and warm clothing -Thee is nobody else around them -the little boy seems to be looking at something. Same with the falcon It looks as thought the father is showing his son how to tie a knot that won't hurt the falcon. They look like native americans.
Donavin Grant (SKHS)
@Mikayla It looks like the man is trying to each the boy how to hold the rope attached to the falcon
Terrell (WA)
@Donavin Grant Word I agree
lauren tree (newport)
-man and child -cold -fall -fur hats I believe that this is a pitcher of two people a man and a boy that are in the cold and it looks like the child is hurt or something causes he's sitting on the ground. The man seems to helping the boy with some sort of thing like tying or tieing something. There look dark so i guessing from a place far from here.
SLD16 (Los Angeles, CA)
We notice that there is a hawk that is a pet because we see a rope tied to the hawks leg. We think that they are in a cold place because the clothes they are wearing is warm. We also notice that the child has a red bag on his lap, that they may use on the bird. Their hats look like they are from the past and may be made from the fur of a red panda or raccoon. We think this photograph was taken on a cloudy day. We think the man may put something inside the bag that the bird will then take to someone.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@SLD16 Welcome! Thanks for looking. Those of you who notice what might be a bag (I'm guessing you're referring to the embroidered red fabric) what do you see that makes you say it might be a bag? I'm also curious what you see that makes you say the fur for the hats might come from a red panda?
sean (skhs)
@SLD16i didnt notice the red fabric as a bag good eye
Ryland (SKHS Port Orchard)
@SLD16 I agree with your observations
Cassie (NY)
I think that they are two Native American boys. They are brothers and the older brother is teaching the younger brother their culture. He is teaching him how to tie a rope to a bird's leg. Maybe he is teaching the younger brother to send messages by bird. Or maybe they are putting a tag on the bird to track it.
natalie (Staten Island, NY)
the man is wearing lebrons
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@natalie Thanks for your comment Natalie. Is he wearing Lebron James basketball shoes? That certainly adds some interest to the image.
Nicole (Staten Island, NY)
This picture is depicting a father teaching his son how to take care of a hawk. There is a rope there so I presume it is a hawk they own.
Jillian (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Nicole I agree but I also believe that the father is teaching his son how to hunt with the bird.
Anthony (Staten Island)
I think that it a father showing his son what their ancestors did long ago. He is showing the little boy, his son, how they talked to people far away. They would tie something to a bird, in this case a peregrine falcon, to talk to each other.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
Is it a Hawk or a Falcon? Hello everyone! I was curious about the difference between these two birds of prey that you are naming in our discussion. So I looked it up and found that Falcons are smaller birds than hawks which are generally large but with shorter wings compared to falcons. ... Falcons have a notch on their beaks while hawks have a simple curve on the beak. Falcons grab their prey with the beaks while hawks use talons on the feet to kill prey. What more can we find about the bird in the image based on this information?
Alice (Staten Island, NY)
I think this is located in Mongolia based on the pattern of the clothing and the hat. I also think that they're putting a leash on the bird. The relationship of the man and the kid could be brothers.
Gabriel (skhs)
@Alice nice idea i didn't think that they could be from Mongolia and that is what i thought they were doing with the rope.
Rachel (AOSE)
@Gabriel What do you think the purpose of the bird is?
Will (TMS)
I think that the bird is a peregrine falcon, which are absolutely sick birds. They are the fastest bird in the world, reaching speeds of up to 240 miles while diving. They attack ducks mid flight and eat them after they plummet to the ground. Epic. They are certainly not the kind of birb to mess with. I don't know why the older man is putting a leash on this majestic beast of a bird. Seems pretty disgraceful to me, containing this awesome birb on a silly leash. However, it may have something to do with their respective cultural backgrounds. What that background is, however, I don't know.
Ian (Port Orchard, WA)
I think that this is a picture of a man out with his son and it would appear that they may be trappers and the father is teaching his son to hunt. The reason I say this is the bird appears to be caught in a snare, a very simple and cheap trap, in addition they are wearing some animal skins which is common for small game hunters. However they might also be natives due to their clothing being very odd and the appear to be Asian(not trying to be racist, just something I noticed). Although the bird appears to be a very young falcon. They could be trying to train it.
Emma F. (N.Y.)
I think they are hunting the bird. Maybe the bird is hurt and they are helping it.They are in a forests surrounded by no one. They are wearing fur hats from Alaska. Maybe they are in Alaska.
Kyle Soukup (Telluride CO)
In this picture, it looks to me that the father is teaching his kid how to hang out with a falcon. This is because they are haniging with a falcon.
Lydia (Colorado)
I agree with most of the comments. There is a small boy and an older man who is either the small boys brother of father. The older one is doing something with the rope that is connected to the falcon. This could be some sort of hunting other tradition that runs in their culture. My guess would be that they are from Mongolia because I have heard that using falcons for different tasks is common there. I also can see that the small boy has no interest in what the older man is doing. Lastly I noticed that the boy is wearing a fully traditional outfit that seems completely handmade but the older man is wearing sneakers that are very common in the US and stores.
Kyle Soukup (Telluride CO)
I think that in this photo the father is teaching his kid how to hang out with a falcon. I think this becuase they are hanging out with a falcon.
Rebecca (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Kyle Soukup Do you think they have good money due to the shoe wear the older one is wearing?
skinny dubs (Colorado)
I believe that this image is depicting a father teaching his son how to care for a hawk properly, and safely. The father wants the son to be prepared as he grows up. Soon, the father will likely pass the Hawk on to the child as a sign of responsibility.
James Carlsen (Staten Island,NY)
It is a older brother teaching his little brother the native culture and how to take proper care of animals.
Natalie (Staten Island, NY)
I believe that it is a Native American man who is teaching his son how to hunt.
Olivia M (AOSE)
@Natalie What led you to believe that the two people are Native Americans?
Nick (Staten island NY)
I believe that the man is trying to teach the kid something that is why he is looking at him like that.
Sophia (Telluride)
I think they are probably hunting. There's a very young child and an older child. I'm guessing the bird on the left is a bird they've trapped since it's so close to them and it has rope tied around it's leg. The fur wrapped around them makes me think they are hunters.
Squad7 (NH)
We first noticed the sneakers the man is wearing -- LeBron James Shoes. Along with the unique outfits the people are sporting as well as their fur hats, the shoes stand out. The string attached to the bird's talon (possible hawk) is for hunting purposes; the bird attracts prey. This may have taken place in Russia, Asia, or possibly America.
Alex (Colorado)
This looks like a scene where the father is teaching the son an old tradition. There is a falcon that has a rope on its ankle and possibly around the boy. It may possibly become a pet.
ERIKA (PJS)
there are one little boy and one man they are in the mountain also i see a bird but i still think the place the are was burned
Zelle (CO)
This picture seems to combine elements of tradition and modernization; a father (maybe) is teaching his son (maybe) about falconry, which is a significant part of Mongolian culture, while both are dressed in traditional garb. However, the father is also wearing modern shoes.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@Zelle Thanks for you comment! You're contextualizing the juxtaposition of the basketball shoes with the traditional clothing. Great critical thinking!
Khaled Al Najjar (Tc William Minnie Howard campus)
I infer that the little kid and his father and it look like they're in the middle of nowhere and maybe the little boy is injured or the man is tieing hawk's claw or the man is the hawk's pet so it can sense where is the boy as if he is lost.and the boy looks he is surprised for seeing something if he saws that is not his father that is tieing him.
skinny dubs (Colorado)
@Khaled Al Najjar I agree that the man is the Hawks pet.
Koko (Telluride Mountain School)
I think a father is teaching his son to properly raise, care for, and use a falcon for hunting as part of the culture. This picture was probably taken in Mongolia because of the terrain and garb of the people, as well as the tradition of falconing.
Talha (Alexandria)
I can infer that they are poor and they don't have house. They have to face many problem because they are immigrants or the country are not safe. They didn't have food to eat. Maybe that country people are doing war.
Kalimullah A (Alexandria VA)
@Talha Can you talk about the bird in the background.
Hamo (Moon)
This picture seems to be a man, maybe a father, teaching a young boy about falconry.
Flynn (Colorado)
@Hamo why do you think that this is falconry?
skinny dubs (Colorado)
@Hamo I believe this is an accurate interpretation of the image however I also believe that it is important to include educated guesses about the characters names
Flynn (Colorado)
the father is teaching his son how to bird hunt. I know this because I am sure the hawk aint their pet
Ethan (SKHS)
@Flynn It may be a bird that they are using to hunt.
skinny dubs (Colorado)
In this image, I see a male tieing a leash attached to a hawk, possibly named Roberto. It seems that Roberto will grow up to be the child, Coyotita's friend. The father John will disappear and Roberto and Coyotita will spend their lives adventuring in search of John.
Natalie (Staten Island, NY)
@skinny dubs that is a great explanation
Christina (AOSE)
@skinny dubs Where did you come up with these names? What makes you sure that these events will happen?
skinny dubs (Colorado)
Trust me, these are their names. Additionally, I am 100% positive that Roberto and Coyotita will develop an unbreakable bond as they search for their father.
axel (alexandria,va)
I infer the man tied the animal up to a rock so it won't go away and the kid can watch over it
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
Many of you are speculating about who these people are based on what they are wearing @Gavin and others wonder if they are "some type of native Americans" because they seem to be wearing "traditional" clothing. @Sedona infers that they are "wearing clothing that might be in their culture" Let me add another perspective by @Gracie H who considers that "another possibility is that they might be dressing up as their ancestors to honor them." What more can we find?
Ronny Sorter (SKHS Port Orchard WA)
@VTS Moderator the man is also wearing lebrons but they are fugayzzi they are fake lebrons because the logo is slightly wrong
Martinez (VA)
I can infer that the man on the picture is teaching the little kid how to take care of the bird.
Ali (T.C William High School)
I can infer that they are getting ready for hunting because the man and the son have a hunting cap.
jaylon (TCW HIGH SCHOOL)
I conclude that the women is tying a leash to the owl so they can take it home with them
Erin (AOSE)
Based on the skin color and clothing of the people, it seems that they may be part of a tribe, possibly a Native American one. But, this picture is probably close to modern day based on the quality of the picture and the modern sneakers that the man is wearing. The people in this picture look like a father and his son. The father is tying a string to the leg of a bird which they may be using for some type of ritual or they may be hunting. It looks like the dad is teaching the son what he is doing so the son can do it on his own one day.
Yaseenullah (T.C Williams High Scholl)
I Infer that the man teaches the kid how to keep a rope around his hand because of the kid looking carefully to the man.
Flynn (Colorado)
@Yaseenullah then what the heck is the hawk doing there? just hanging out?
wamda (T.C William High School)
I infer that these people lost their homes because they look like people in need.
Sophia (Telluride)
@wamda What specifically makes you think they are in need and don't have a home?
Chris (Port Orchard)
I believe that this man could be teaching the kid how to properly care for a falcon. I say this because of the outfit that they are wearing is a skin hunters kind of outfit and because there is a falcon to the left of the kid and the adult is tying a rope around the falcon and either the ground or the kid. All in all, that is what i believe is happening in this photo.
Eden (SKHS Port Orchard)
What is going on in this picture? 1. I think that there is a father and his son and it looks like they’re in the middle of nowhere. They might be getting ready to hunt for something or they’re going on a long journey to somewhere. 2. What do you see that makes you say that? I see a male adult and a male baby and they look related. There is also only dirt and pebbles and grass so it looks like the middle of nowhere. They also have hats on and big clothing so it’s probably cold and they have rope of some kind which makes me think they’re going somewhere. 3. What more can you find? There is a bird next to them and there is rope tied to his legs and he looks scared. Their hats are also ‘raccoon’ hats. It also looks like they like to wear fur clothing. And the dad looks like he’s tying the rope to his son somehow.
trevor (skhs)
@Eden yes very smart conclusion. detective worthy skills
Austyn (Port Orchard, WA)
@Eden It does appear that they could be getting ready to go hunt for something.
Esteban Julio Roberto (Malta)
This picture seems to show a man and child, as well as a hawk to the child’s right. I think the boy and the man are apart of some sort of cultural tradition wearing those caps, as well as the area. The area seems to be more mountainous and than wooded and city areas, leading me to believe this is in the rural areas of what may be a foreign country. I think it may be somewhere in Asia.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@Esteban Julio Roberto I appreciate your careful analysis noting where the setting is "mountainous" and is not "wooded/city" and finally placing this image somewhere in Asia. I'm curious what made you come to that conclusion?
Gavin (SKHS Port Orchard)
Looking at the way the two are dressed makes me believe they are some type of native Americans. It also looks like they are hooking a rope up to a bird so they could be doing some sort of hunting in a very rocky area.It also looks as if the older boy is teaching the younger one something.
Christina (AOSE)
@Gavin WHat possibly could the older boy be teaching the younger boy?
Sedona (SKHS Port Orchard)
In the photo, you can see a man with a boy tying a sting to a hawk. The people are wearing clothing that might be used in their culture and the man might be teaching the boy things in their culture that might have to do with the hawk. You can see the man’s shoe that can show that this was taken in our time and not from along time ago.
Ryan (SKHS)
seems like to 2 native Americans hunting or something like that with the falcons on a string in a trap or to help them hunt
Deidre Mallory (SKHS Port Orchard)
Looking at the appearance of the two people in the picture they are native Americans and it looks as if the man is tying the hawk to the little boy. And it looks as if the little boy and the bird are watching something off in the distance.
Erin (AOSE)
@Deidre Mallory Why do you think the man is tying the hawk to the little boy? And what do you think the bird and he boy are watching in the distance?
Kate Medlock (North Carolina)
It is a photograph of a man and a child crouching down outdoors. There is a bird sitting right beside them. I believe the old man is the child father and is teaching him how to hunt during the cold season.
Justina (SKHS Port Orchard)
From looking at their clothes it seems to be people of Native descent, maybe an older relative/tribe member hunting with a small child? The terrain is very rocky so they could possibly be in the mountains.
Emma (SKHS Port orchard)
I believe that they may be using the bird to hunt with them and the older guy is showing the child how to die a knot. Clearly apart of their culture with the clothing.
Noah Nunley (SKHS)
What is going on in this picture is that there is a father and son probably going fishing or they are going to fly the Falcon with rope. What i see that makes me say that is because the falcon has a piece of rope or something around its foot. What more can I find about this picture is where they are and what are they doing with the falcon.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@Noah Nunley Thanks for your comment and for relying on the WGOITP questions! What are you observations about where they might be or the setting?
Chris (Port Orchard)
@Noah Nunley never thought of it like that, thanks.
Mitchell (SKHS Port Orchard)
It looks like these two kids are in the mountains like the himalayas. The younger child has a pet bird what looks like a hawk. The older child looks like he is trying to teach the younger child something.
Erin (AOSE)
@Mitchell What do you think the older child is teaching the younger child?
Zakiyah (Dallas, NC)
The people in the photograph seem to be of Indian and or Asian descent and the older guy seems to be teaching the child how tie something(hunting the bird next to the child), but the child is not paying attention to what he is being taught.
Eden (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Zakiyah that is a very good thought on what is going on. I should've thought about that haha.
Aidan G (Poquessing middle school)
This picture looks like a sim and a dad trying to catch a bird because if you look closely the bird has a rope tied to the birds leg which I think the dad could be catching the bird or teaching his son on how to catch the bird. I think that because they have a similar clothing style and the dad has Lebron sneakers on so that could be that person is from somewhere else where those shoes are famous.
Gracie H. (Gastonia, NC)
In this picture, there is an Asian man and child. It looks they are in Asia, and in the mountains. This picture seems to have been taken around the early 2000's (the shoes they were wearing seemed to be from that time). It seems to be they are stopping to rest, on their journey across the mountain. Another possibility is that they might be dressing up as their ancestors to honor them.
Kody blowers (south kitsap)
In this picture it looks like two Native Americans, father and son, stopped on a mountain. Next to them is a bird, it looks unfazed but could be being used for hunting purposes.

Two possible brothers are on a hike and they stopped to get some rest, they are in a colder climate and the older one is showing his little bro something. There is a bird maybe a hawk.

It appears to be taking place somewhere in the Himalayas, and the young boy is probably being taught something maybe by his father? It seems that the boy is being introduced to the eagle, which indicates that the boy could be learning to hunt at such a young age.
Sedona (SKHS Port Orchard)
@Trinity I thought the same thing
isaac (skhs)
In this picture I see two Native American people.
Harley (nc)
Based on their appearance and clothing, these are two Native American Indians, maybe a man and his son. It looks like they're talking about the bird trapped in the rope contraption.
Kody blowers (south kitsap)
@Harley if they were to be trapping it it would not be unfazed and the boy wouldn't be able to be so close without it attacking.
Zelle (CO)
@Harley what in particular about their clothing makes you think they're Native Americans?
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
What a wonderful discussion! Many of you are noticing the terrain. @dizzy sees the duo are in a "rocky environment" @Arca sees a"rocky plain" while @Tariq lists the "rocks and stones". What more can we find to understand the setting or place?
Savannah (NC)
I think this picture is showing an older bother showing his younger brother how to tie a string, maybe to do something with the bird. I also notice that they have warm clothes on, so it must be cold there. The two boys could be Native American Indians.
Koko (Telluride Mountain School)
@Savannah I had not considered that the older man might be a brother and not a father. Nice!
Anna (Gastonia)
In this picture it looks it is taking place somewhere in the Himalayas, and the young boy in the picture looks like he is being taught something by a older man or maybe an older sibling. The falcon beside them along with the fur clothing indicates maybe they are hunting. There is a string attached to the hawk and I mean the hawk doesn't look like it is trying to go away.
VTS Moderator (Seattle)
@Anna Thanks for your post this morning. What do you see that makes you say they are in the Himalayas? It sounds like you might recognize some features in this image.

We appear to be in the Himalayas where a young boy is being introduced to a paragon falcon that may be used to hunt or educate people on birds.
dizzy (ottawa)
In this picture I can see two boys they may be relatives and there is a bird on a string and they may be hunting for food it looks like they are in a different tradition than ours. They are in a rocky environment they might live in a village the older boy has new shoes that looks like they are close to a city.
F.A (Ottawa)
In this picture, I see two people who seem to be wearing traditional clothing of some sort. There is a bird next to the little boy that looks like it's tied up to something. It looks like it is taking place somewhere cold and rocky.
Haidar (Ottawa)
What I see in this picture are two people presumably brothers, and the older brother is trying to teach his younger brother how to tie the rope on the hawk/falcons foot. They seem to be located in a mountainous area which is cold because of the attire they are wearing which consists of warm fur hats, and warm fur jackets. I think they are nomads because of the attire they are wearing and for the need to learn how to hunt. I think the attire shows that they are nomads because of the older persons shoes which seem very modern compared to his younger brothers footwear
Rem (Ottawa)
This picture takes place in an open outdoor space. There is a man and what looks like his son, both wearing visibly traditional clothing and hats but modern pants and sneakers. There is also a bird beside them tied up by the leg with a leash which the man is holding. It looks like with the help of the bird, the two of them could be hunting for rodents/animals. The coats they have look thick, and their hats are made of fur, hinting that it must be cold where they are. However, where they are hunting is difficult to figure out. I’m going to guess that they are a native american pair located somewhere in North America, where the weather is chilly but there isn’t a lot of snow. From what I know, many wild prey tend to stay in burrows, and this pair looks like they are in a rocky area that could contain burrows.
BG (Ottawa)
In this photo, the two people that are there seem to be family. Possibly Father and Son? Where they are, I think they are somewhere in Mongolia. I think this because Mongolia seems to be very rocky, and where they are there are a lot of rocks, There is a Bird tied to a rope. It looks to be a falcon, and the other side is being held by the Father, They also seem to be first nations, based on the fact that they are wearing what looks to be hats made out of Beaver fur. They are wearing thick warm clothes which leads me to believe that it is kind of chilly. The Falcon leads me to believe that they are hunting or the Falcon is the hunted. And judging on the young Boy’s face, he seems so bored with this, almost like he isn't even paying attention.
Kenley (NC)
This looks like a man and his child on a mountain. They have a peregrine falcon, which can be used to hunt. They have fur hats on their heads and layers, so it must be cold. The man has tennis shoes on that don't look like they go with the rest of the clothes they are wearing.

In this picture I see two people sitting down. They might be brothers and the older brother is teaching him how to tie the bird. In this picture they might be just normal people hunting for fun. The weather seems to be cold because of the clothes they are wearing.
serena (SKHS port orchard)
@NS i agree with what you are saying, i also think that they could be using the bird as bait.
Tariq (Ottawa)
In my opinion The picture posted in the New York Times shows a father and a son hunting in a mountain area. They are son and father because they are so close to each other and they wear the same clothes. Also they looks like each other in they are face and the boy is so small which mean he go out only with his family. I observer that they are hunting because they have a hunting bird and also they have some sort of robs which is using for trap some animals. In the background of picture I can observer the rocks and stone which mean they are in the mountain area and also they have big bots which is good for mountain climbing.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
You're doing a great job of looking this morning. It's so interesting to see the different areas of the picture that pique your interest. Some of you have noticed the expression on the young person's face. @Audrey notes, "the kid isn’t paying attention." @Bella T thinks, "The young boy seems totally disinterested in what the man is doing and is staring off into the distance." One early commenter "entered" the picture imagining people and animal behind the photographer that the child is looking at.
Arca (New Jersey)
In this picture, I see two Native American people. I an tell this because of their clothes and hats, made of raccoon pelt. The child is sitting down to what could be his or her father, and the father is busy tying some string to a bird's (which is neatly camouflaged to the left of the child) leg. Why would he be tying the bird to the ground, with chins and string? Well, many tribes of Native Americans are known for making clothing or hats out of animal fur or feathers. This could be an attempt to get some of this bird's feathers without having it fly away. Something else I noticed was that the man is wearing ordinary sneakers, but that couldn't have been too hard for him to find, anyway. Most of modern Natives' land is currently occupied by American citizens, so they could have either purchased the sneakers themselves or just found it lying around. They seem to be in some sort of rocky plain.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
It's the small details in a picture that often give you a clue of what's happening. Many of you have mentioned the "string" or the "rope." Here are some ideas. What do you think? @GraceR thinks a man is teaching his son to tie a knot. @Nicole Vorkunova notes that a bird is "attached to a string, and since it is a bird of prey, they are most likely using it to hunt." @MatthewS posits "the man and the boy are probably hunting birds because in the picture it looks like a little rope is on the birds leg and the man is holding on to the rope."
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
I shared a few of your ideas about the significance of the rope--to catch the bird, to help the child learn falconry, to learn a specific knot. I wanted to add this idea from @GreenScreenMan. He thinks "it looks like the man is tying a rope around the hawks right leg and wrapping the rope around the kid, so i think the man is trying to tie the kid to the bird to deliver the kid somewhere OR their might be a war going on and the man is trying to send the kid somewhere safe." So this may be a Super Hero bird!

What are these people doing? @Jenna L thinks they’re hunting. @Katelyn thinks they’re hiking. @Lauren thinks they are survivalists, learning to be self-sufficient. Some of you believe this is the art of falconry being passed down from father to son. Keep looking. What do you think is going on?

Two Indians were taking a rest on a hike, and tying string to the birds foot, as well as protecting its claws.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Joseph, thanks for posting this morning. What do you see that makes you think these are native peoples?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Thank you all for commenting today. Many of you have noted the strange juxtaposition between the traditional “tribal” garb and the contemporary “trainers”/“basketball shoes”/“sneakers” that the individual on the right is wearing. @Nicole suggests this is some kind of reenactment tourist experience. @Katelyn thinks the trainers are best for a walk on this terrain. Some suggest this is a cultural festival highlighting traditional dress. What do you think?
Jeffrey A (TC williams HS)
I infer that they are hunting because the have camouflage clothes on and i see that they have an owl that is tied to the kid .
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jeffrey A, thanks for posting today. I'm wondering what suggests "camouflage" in the attire they're wearing? I was intrigued by your idea of an owl. Many others have identified the bird as a falcon or eagle. So I looked up "owl" and here is what I found: owls are in the order strigiformes, while hawks, falcons, etc. are in the order falconiformes. therefore, owls are not technically raptors. however, they are basically the "night shift" for the falconiformes, and fill the same roles, so they are still birds of prey. What do you think?
karen (virginia)
I think that the people are some type of tribal group. I say this because their clothing has fur and they have patterns on it.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@karen, thanks for looking this morning. What do you see in the picture that could help you identify where these people live?
bob (under the sea)
i think there tying something
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@bob, I wonder what they're tying. Please take another look and see if you can come up with some new/more observations.
michael (virgina)
A father and son are mountain climbing
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@michael, please look again ad give us evidence from the picture that supports your idea of a hike.
Kirsten (NH)
I see two people out in the woods and they are going on an adventure or maybe they are catching the bird thats right in front of them because the string is wrapped around the birds ankle and maybe getting tied to a rock
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Kirsten, thanks for looking this morning. What do you see in the picture that suggests that they are on an adventure? What kind of adventure?
Mr. krabbs (bikini bottom)
a father or older brother is showing his son a bird and they look like they are in an indian tribe. they are in the mountains
roblox gamer (bloxburg)
A man is with his child. The ground is wet. Both of them have squirrels on their head. The man is teaching his son a lesson about going outside without an adult until he is older and not to go in the woods.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@roblox gamer, thanks for posting today. I'm wondering about two of your comments. What do you see that makes you say the ground is wet? What makes you think the headgear is squirrel and not some other animal pelt?
Grace R (AOSE)
This picture shows a man and a boy sitting outside on a rocky hill with a falcon. They might be father and son, and the father seems to be trying to teach his son how to tie a knot. They seem to be falconers, and they are holding onto a rope which is attached to the falcon. They also appear to be in a cold climate as they are wearing warm clothing and fur hats. They could possibly be in central Asia, maybe Mongolia, as falconry is a more common practice and tradition there. The picture also seems to have been taken recently, as it is in color.
Ezra (Montreal QC)
In this picture I see a 1 young boy and 1 teenaged boy. They are wearing a big fur jacket and hat. They look like they are from a reservation. The young boy is sitting on some rocks next to his brother from the looks of it. I think they are hunting because there is a bird beside them with string tied to it’s leg. There skin color is a mix between tan and white. It looks like it’s a non well taken care of environment because I can see there are weeds growing in the ground and can little bits of debris in the background. The jackets there wearing are brown and the big brother is wearing a white shirt underneath that looks like it’s religious because it has different embroideries on it.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ezra, thanks for responding this morning. You've done some careful looking. I'm wondering what you see that makes you think the individuals may be on a reservation? What leads you to believe the symbols on the clothing are religious rather than just decorative?
Amanda (Poq)
I think that a father and son where going out on a hike and the father is teaching his how to survive. They look like there father and son since they look alike and wearing almost the same thing. I think that the father is teaching him to survive since he tying a sort of string attach to the bird leg. Also I think that they are in the wild since there a lot of rocks around and there’s a bird. Also they are probably not homeless since the father have lebrons in and they look new.
Azizjon A. (POQ)
I think this picture was taken in Mongolia because I known for a fact that there are people in eagle hunters in Mongolia that train big birds to sit on there hands. I think that the man in this picture is teaching his son or showing his son how he to make the eagle land on his hand. The bird has a rope tied to its foot so it doesn’t fly away.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Azizjon A., you seem very convinced of your interpretation. I wonder what other things in the picture could back up your claim that the setting for this is Mongolia?
Azizjon A. (POQ)
@VTS Moderator Some other things that can prove my interpretation is the clothing the two people are wearing I have seen pictures of other Mongolian eagles hunters wearing just about the same thing.
Nicole Vorkunova (Poquessing Middle School)
Looking at the picture, a few things I notice is a bird known for hunting prey, an adult and a child, and a sloped region. By analyzing their clothing, I can determine that they are in a mountainous region (possibly the Himalayas) somewhere in Asia. I know it is in Asia from how the adult and child’s appearance and how they are dressed. Adding to hoe they are dressed, they seemed to be wearing very warm clothing and the adult is wearing contrasting sneakers. The sneakers and clothing must be from two very different places. Their hats are made of fur, so I can infer it is from an animal they might have hunted. Also, going back the bird, it is attached to a string, and since it is a bird of prey, they are most likely using it to hunt. These are all very important aspects of the picture that will most definitely play a role in the final caption.
Lydia (Colorado)
@Nicole Vorkunova I completely agree, I think he shoes are a very important part of the picture as well as the bird. I believe it is in Mongolia because hunting with falcons is a very big thing there and I believe there is a festival there for hunting with falcons. Don't quote me on that but that is what I have heard.
Audrey (Poquessing Middle School)
There’s two people sitting on a rocky surface. The older one looks like he’s telling the younger one how to do something. They’re dressed in fur outfits and the older one is holding a string that’s tied to the bird’s ankle. The kid isn’t paying attention. The older one is wearing modern shoes but I can’t tell if the kid is too. Maybe the older one’s teaching the kid how to do something with the bird.
Matthew. S (Pa)
So in this picture, the man and the boy are probably hunting birds because in the picture it looks like a little rope is on the birds leg and the man is holding on to the rope. They are wearing those jackets because it was cold in Germany at that time and Germany was the country they were in when they were hunting.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Matthew. S, I wondering what you see that makes you think the setting for this picture is Germany?
Azizjon A. (POQ)
@Matthew. S I am also wondering why you think this is in Germany.
Sierra c (Pennsylvania)
There are two people I think there farther and son since they seem pretty calm it think since there is a bird with a rope he is trying to show his kid how to ketch pray just so if he is out in the wild he knows how to take care of him that is why they are in a rocky area to repersent the wild also there in warm clothes so they can be out there for a while just like I said to repersent in a imergeny they know how to take care of tem self.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Sierra c, thanks for posting today. You have an idea that this image represents a self-sufficient lifestyle. Do you think the photographer wanted to show this? Do you think the participants asked the photographer to capture this?
Jamie (Poquessing Middle School)
I think that two people native to the Himalayas (telling from their Asian appearances, the rocky terrain, and the furs they’re wearing) are going on some sort of hike. I can infer this because the man is wearing sneakers and has a string attached to a bird of prey, possibly to overlook the path they take.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jamie, thanks for posting today. Some other respondents have posed the idea of hunting or a cultural festival. What would you say to them to give evidence for your hypothesis of a hike?
Juliana (PMS)
There is a man and child, possibly related. In a barren rocky place with hawk tied to a rope. These people could be living a modern lifestyle but is practicing a traditional occasion with their elders. The shoes the man is wearing lead me to this idea. The tradition might be that the father teaches the son hunting with animals by their side, hence the hawk. Maybe their in the rocky side of America or Nepal.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Juliana, you've noticed the juxtaposition of the traditional and the contemporary in this image. Looking the the evidence presented in the image how could you discover whether these individuals are from America, Nepal, or another location?
John Kearns (Poquessing middle school)
It appears to be a father teaching their son how falconry works, judging by how they have a rope tied to the foot, a system used to track the falcon while it finds the hunt.
Hannah K. (AOSE)
In this picture I see a man holding a rope that is attached to one of the legs of a bird. Based on its appearance the bird looks like it could be a hawk. Since he has attached a rope to the leg of the hawk it leads me to assume that the man is hunting it. I typically associate the act of hunting an animal to be one that puts pressure on the hunter, but since the man is very calm I believe that he is just teaching the boy that is next to him how to properly hunt the hawk. This hawk could be a typical food source for the people, depending if there are many in the region. The hawk seems completely distracted from something in the distance, which is why the man is having an easy time luring it. The man and the boy look like they could be related. They have the same clothing and their faces look similar to each other. They also appear to be in a rocky location that is cold and thus most likely up north, since they are heavily bundled in fur clothing. The hunter has shoes that look modern, which could imply that these two people come from an area that is modern and developed.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Hannah K., thanks for posting this morning. I'm wondering about your inferences about the hawk. Is the hawk the prey of the man or is the hawk used by the man to find prey?
Hannah K. (AOSE)
@VTS Moderator I think that the hawk is the prey of the man, since the man has tied a rope around its leg. This leaves the hawk helpless against the man.
Ryan Meehan (Poquessing Middle School)
I think that they are lost or taking a break from hiking or something. The people look like they are related because they both look the same. The might be from America because they are wearing American shoes. The bird might be a pet or something that they caught.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Ryan Meehan, thanks for looking this morning. I'm wondering what you see that makes you say they could be lost?
Nicole W (Pennsylvania)
These people are tourists experiencing what Native American life must’ve been like. I know that they are tourists because they are dressed as Native Americans, but the man is wearing expensive sneakers.
Dane L (Feasterville-Trevose)
A man and, perhaps, his son is on a rocky landscape and the older man is tying a rope to a bird. Perhaps they were taking a hike, (this is suggested by the man wearing sneakers) and saw a bird that was injured and they are trying to help it without it flying away (this is why there is a rope). They are wearing coats and hats that don’t exactly look like they’re from America so maybe this land is not in America or maybe these people are not from America and just had those coats on them.
Aidan Davis (Pennsylvania)
I think that a father and son are out hunting and trapping
Grace R (AOSE)
@Aidan Davis Where do you think they are? Why are they hunting?
Lauren (Bucks county)
I think this is a father and son according to the matching clothes and they are living out in the wild on a rocky cold region. The materials they have like string looks like there doing some survail things,
Brett Cohen (Poq)
In this picture I can see a man and a boy which may be his son or maybe a little brother. I see them tying a string that is connected to a bird (may be a hawk) and the man is wearing lebrons so he may be a tourist or homeless and got these shoes donated to him. I also notice that it may be cold because they are wearing heavy clothing and hats. I see the ground is very rocky so they may be close to the water. This is what I notice happening in this picture.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Brett Cohen, thanks for posting today. You've done some careful looking and thought of different ways to interpret the picture. How could you take elements of your observations and learn more about what may be happening?
Muke A (Poquessing Middle School)
Maybe this man is teaching his son how to survive and live in the wild. I think this is the older man’s son because they look similar with the same skin color and are kinda dressed alike. Maybe the father is using the bird as a visual and trying to teach the son from a younge age how to tie and take care of the bird in the wild as a part of the training. It might also be kinda cold here because they are wearing fur clothing and long pants. They also seem to be in a somewhat remote location because there is no one close or around them.
Katelyn (Poquessing Middle School)
This is a picture of a little boy and a man dressed in warm clothing. I think that they are on a hike, searching for animals. The man is wearing Lebrons that don’t go with his clothes. I know these things because in the picture the man is tying a rope to the bird. Also, they have heavy clothes on and the man has bright blue and green shoes on.
GreenScreenMan (Canada)
In This Picture it looks like the man is tying a rope around the hawks right leg and wrapping the rope around the kid, so i think the man is trying to tie the kid to the bird to deliver the kid somewhere OR their might be a war going on and the man is trying to send the kid somewhere safe.
Kieran R. (Pennsylvania)
I think that this is a father and son and the father is teaching his son stuff about the wilderness and the environment that they are in.
Grace (aose)
@Kieran R. What makes you think they are father and son?
Kaylee A (Pennsylvania)
This picture looks like a father and son who are in a cold environment since they are wearing warm clothes. Also there is rope tied to the birds foot so maybe the father is showing the child how to hunt or how to examine a bird without the bird flying away. The child doesn’t look that interested and may be interested in something else than what the adult is trying to show him.
Jenna L (Pennsylvania)
I think these men are hunting. I also think that the father is teaching his son how to hunt in the wild. I’m thinking this because there is a rope connected to the bird and the other end is in the fathers hand. He seems to be showing his son how to tie it up and take it home so they can cook it. It also seems cold by their clothing. They have raccoon hats on and heavy coats on.
Jonas (Feasterville, Pennsylvania)
I think it is a father and his son going out on a hike and found a bird caught on a wire and is trying to help it get free.
Grace R (AOSE)
@Jonas Where in the world do you think they are?
Matt W (Pennsylvania)
I think a dad and a son are out on a walk in a rocky path because the background looks like it is rocky, and the dad is probably helping his son because maybe something got in his way and he’s trying to remove it.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Matt W, thanks for posting this morning. I'm intrigued by the idea of removing an impediment in the way. Please explain what you mean.
Alyssa (pennsylvania)
They look like native Americans because of the outfits they are wearing and the head piece they are wearing. It looks like the older person it teaching the younger person how to catch birds because of the string that is attached to the birds leg.
Bella.T (AOSE)
In this picture, there is a man and a young boy sitting in a rocky region. They could possibly be father and son. They are wearing furs and coats that resemble the clothing of people in the north. The man is wearing modern sneakers which tells me that this picture was taken recently. By the looks of it, the region seems pretty barren and lacking in plants. This suggests the people's dependence on animals for food. Next to the young boy there is a hawk. The man is holding a rope that is tied around to the hawk's leg. The rope plus the people's dependence on animals suggests that the man is on a hunting trip with the young boy. He might be trying to show him how to catch prey when he grows older. The young boy seems totally disinterested in what the man is doing and is staring off into the distance. He could possibly be looking at other animals or maybe there are additional people with them.
Grace (aose)
This is a picture of a little kid and an older man. They are were warm clothing with lots of animal fur. They could be wearing costumes to represent people of the past because the outfits do not seem modern. Also, the man's shoes do not fit with the authentic fur outfits because they are a pair of newer models shoes. I can tell this because of the neon colors and material they are made of. To continue, this picture is very high quality, which suggests that is was taken in modern times. They are tying a string to some type of hawk which could part of the reeactmemt of the people they dressed as.
dahlia (kelp forest)
it looks as if 2 people, young and old, wearing winter clothing and out in the mountains with a bird. the bird has a string tied to its foot, which could possibly be because they are hunting. the hats the people are wearing look like animal fur, giving more to the idea that they are hunting. they appear to have darker skin, inferring that they could be thai or hispanic etc.
Andrew Gardyan (Neshaminy)
A child and an adult are tying a a string to a bird so the child might learn how to ty a not.
Grace (aose)
@Andrew Gardyan Why do you think they are tying a string to a bird? Why not something else?
Gianna (poq)
I think that the two boys in the picture are hunting because they have the birds foot tied up. Also bcuse of there outfits and their tan skin maybe there are in a different culture or country.
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Gianna What country do you think they are from?
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Gianna What about their attire makes you believe that they are from a different country? What country do you think they are from?
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Gianna What about their outfits make you think they come from a different country?
Julianna (POQ)
In this picture I can see two people. The land looks rocky and the wheather could be cold. I think that it is cold becuase it looks like the two people are wearing warm clothes and the plants look dead. The string that the older guy is holding looks like it is tied to the birds foot, so they could be hunting.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Julianna, thanks for posting this morning. You've mentioned the fact that these people may be hunting. Please look again. What can you infer from the picture by looking at the relationship of the people?
Keyerra (Pennsylvania)
This seems to be an older person who is with a younger child in a rocky maybe mountainous area. There is a rope tied to a bird which leads me to believe that they maybe hunting which the bird could be a source of prey for hunting. The two people have similar clothing, that is furry, and would be used in winter to help keep them warm. They don’t seem to be in a desert and more a mountainside type because there is rocks and some type of vegetation in the background.
Lara K (POQ)
I think that they are hunting for food because there is a bird next to the people and they put a string around it’s foot. Also I think that they are in cold and mountain like area. They are both wearing warm clothing and hats out of fur. In the background you can see rocks and dead plants, that leads me to believe it is cold.
Marissa S (Pennsylvania)
I think that the man and the child are related because they are both wearing similar outfits and they are both darker skin. Also, I think that they are trying to train the bird since they tided a string to its leg, which could be a traditional event for this culture, since they are wearing the cultural clothings. Therefore, the man and the kid are getting ready to train the bird, as a tradition.
Nikki L. (Poquessing)
There hats are the same and they are really fluffy and they have coats on so it looks like a cold setting they are also in a rocky setting and they also tied a string to the birds leg so maybe the bird can navigate them to a place since in the cold birds navigate to a warm place.
McKinnley (PHS)
In the picture, a man and a young boy, perhaps the man's son, are both wearing winter clothing, the man his holding a small rope that appears to be to attached to the bird, that looks like a hawk. The hawk could be a pet or injured seeing as it is not trying to get away nor does it looked alarmed. They appear to be somewhere in asia, most likely on a mountain, as the rocks and weeds are indicative of one.
Kiera (S)
In the picture it looks like it’s a father and son hunting in a mountainous area. There’s also a rope around the birds leg and it looks like the older man is trying to tie the rope. Maybe he’s going to tie the rope and put the bird in the red thing on the child’s lap.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Kiera, thanks for posting today. You've posited a new idea about the bird. You've connected the bird and the red bag to explain what's happening. Keep looking. so interesting to try to find the meaning in a picture!
Vinny (POQ, Pennsylvania)
I believe that a father and son are in a mountainous terrain. There is a tied falcon and it could possibly be tamed. They are in warm clothing leading me to believe they are in a cold environment.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Vinny, great start looking this morning. I'm sure another look would reveal even more.
Max (P.A)
In this photo, I think that these people could be in the Himalayas or some other mountain range, probably in Asia, because in the background, the ground is sloped and they are wearing what looks like warm clothing. They may be hunting for food or something else, because they have a bird of prey, which infers that they may be hunting
Lili R. (PA)
I think that the little boy is the man’s son because they look similar and both have the same hat on. The father might be teaching the boy how to hunt, because the string he’s holding is tied around the bird’s foot. The weather is probably cold, because they are wearing winter coats and the plants look dead.
Jenna (Nebraska)
I think this is a child and son in a country in Asia. It seems cold where they are at because they are wearing coats and fur hats. I believe they have just caught the bird that is next to them because the man is working with a string that is attatched to the birds leg, although I am a little confused because the bird does not seem distressed at all. At first I thought the father was teaching the son how to hunt birds, but now I think the bird might somehow be helping them hunt, just because of how calm he is near them.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jenna, thanks for adding your comment this morning. I enjoyed watching your train of thought.
Brandon (Poquessing middle school)
In this picture it looks like a man is with his son or brother and they are hunting for a prey and that is why they are tying a string to the birds foot, or they are keeping the bird there to get animals attracted to the bird and the man try to capture the animal.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Brandon, thanks for posting this morning. People have seen the bird as the prey of the humans or as a tool to be used to get prey. You're suggesting that the bird be used as bait in a trap. So cool to see the different ways people interpret an image.
Andrew G. (PMS)
Maybe there hunting birds to eat for a feast or just a meal since there are doing something to the bird and they will maybe bring it back home with them. They are probably in the mountains becuase it’s all rocky and it looks shanty like sideways.
Tyler Egan (PMS)
In this picture, the man is wearing LeBron James’, an American basketball players basketball shoes. They also look like they are wearing warm clothes becuase they have raccoon hats and heavy jackets. They have that owl tied up by a rope on its foot, and it looks like they’re doing something to the string. The child seems to be looking at something off to the distance. They are in a more rocky area becuase of all the rocks that surround them.
Gabby (Pennsylvania)
To me it seems they may be in a tribe based on the clothing and hats. It seems they are using the bird because they tied a string around the birds foot so maybe it’s a way of hunting for food because they cannot fly and the bird can so it sees more. Also it seems cold where they are based on the child’s flushed face and the warm looking clothing.
Renee C (Pennsylvania)
In this photo it looks like the man and boy do not look like their in america. In the backgroung it looks really rocky and also they look like they are asian or mexocan from the tanness of their skin.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Renee C, thanks for looking this morning. You seem sure the setting is not America. What do you SEE that makes you say that?
Ryan F (PA)
In this picture, I see a man and a younger child. They have tan skin they might have a certain nationality. They look like they have been outside long because on the young child’s hand there looks like dirt on his hand. The o,def mans looks like he’s putting a string somewhere and the string is tied to the Bird.
Chloe (Philadelphia)
I see that there is a wire tied to a birds foot, and the older man is holding the string. Both people are wearing very warm clothes, and all the plants look to be dead. They are in a very rocky area And it looks like the boy is holding a red hat.
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Chloe Why do you believe they have tied a wire to the bird's foot?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
Good morning, VTS/NYTimes community, you’re looking, deciphering, and commenting. Thank you! There seems to be some consensus that the location of the image is somewhere “North.” You’ve noted traditional clothing juxtaposed with contemporary Nike footwear--@Siddharth and Salma claim LeBron 11 and @Cowen suggests lebron 10s king edition falcon pro 360. Some have posited falcon hunting and others think this is a cultural heritage festival. Keep looking. Remember to cite evidence from the picture to back up your claims. Please take the time to look at other comments and respond.
Evan (PHS)
In this picture I can see an older and younger man bearing similar clothing, a tamed falcon, and the edge of a rocky hill. The two men are wearing similar clothing with one major difference, the shoes, while the child is wearing sandles or boots the elder of the two is wearing one of the earlier models of Nike's Lebron James shoe. With that being said that means this picture must be taken from 2003-2009. The tamed falcon means that this picture was taken in an Asian country perhaps Mongolia, falcons are commonly tamed there.
Sophia T (POQ)
In this picture, I can first infer that the setting is in a rocky mountainous area and it is during a cold season. The two men seem to be related and are wearing furry clothing, also the clothing hints to me that they might be part of a tribe. Also, I can infer that they are hunting because the bird is a bird of prey and they tied a string to the bird’s foot which they might use the bird as a hunting tool. In summary, the man and the boy are setting up for a hunt.
Vinny K (PMS)
I believe these people are of Mongolian or Turkic decent because they are wearing a type of clothing that has a writing that looks to be of symbols. They are also in a rocky area because there are rocks in the background. I also think they are hunting something because the clothes they wear look to be of tribal decent.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Vinny K, thanks for joining the conversation today. I'm wondering what the connection is that you're making between the ethnic clothing and hunting?
Andrew B (PMS)
It seems like there is arising people that are in a tribe because of thier hats and they are in a rocky area and are sowing something and Usenet the bird to help them.
Alyssa Knott (North Carolina)
In the picture, I can see an older man wearing winter clothes with a young child bearing a similar outfit, and it makes me believe they may be related. I think they are in Mongolia for two reasons. The first is that they have what seems to be a tamed falcon next to the people, and falconry is common in Mongolia. The second reason is that their winter clothing looks similar to Mongolian winter clothing, especially the hats. The picture quality makes me think it was taken recently. I think that they may be hunting because falconry is described as using a bird of prey in means of hunting.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Alyssa Knott, thanks for your careful looking. Many have also concluded that the two people here will be hunting. The idea has also been proposed that they may be doing a demo at a cultural event. How would you respond to this idea?
Brooklyn Buchanan (North Carolina)
In this picture I see a man and possibly his child who might belong to a tribe. The man on the right is holding onto a rope and if you travel where that rope goes, it is attached to the falcon's foot. This makes me believe that they are involved in some sort of falconry (which is when someone ties a rope to the bird in order to keep, train, or hunt with it). Based off of their clothing and hats you can tell that they are Mongolian. Due to the amount of light in the picture, I think it was taken early in the morning.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Brooklyn Buchanan, thanks for your careful looking. I'm wondering what leads you to think that these two individuals are "tribal" people?
Maggie F (NC)
This image appears to be a father teaching his young son to tie some type of knot. They're both dressed in cold-weather, culturally inspired clothing. There is also a hawk sitting to the left of the boy. The bird seems tranquil so perhaps the father is teaching the child something to do with it. The setting around them appears to be mountainous and rocky with clusters of dry grass popping up sporadically. Judging by the flush of the boy, where they are is a cold region.
Hannah K. (AOSE)
@Maggie F What do you think the father is trying to teach the child to do with the hawk?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Maggie F, thanks for commenting today. You've made some excellent observations and inferences about what's going on in this picture. I would challenge you to go back and look some more. I bet you can find even more.
Rebecca (Highland School of Technology)
In this picture there is a child with an adult who is most likely his father. The father is holding a string that is connected to the bird's foot which shows they may be taking part in "falconry" which is considered to be the hunting of wild animals. The little boy looks like he is 4 years old. They are also wearing warm clothing which means it is most likely winter time. While the adult seem to be teaching the child about the birds, the child is looking off into the distance. Due to their clothing, I believe they are apart of a specific culture that is not as advanced as we are.
Claire (AOSE)
This picture looks as though it is in Mongolia because of the tame falcon. There is a child with an adult, possibly his father. The father is holding a string that is connected to the falcon's foot. These people are taking part in "falconry" which is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state or habitat. The child looks like he is 3 or 4 years old. His father could be teaching him falconry for when he is older. In addition, they are wearing war clothing. Therefore I believe it is winter. The child, however, is not focused on the bird. He is looking off into the distance. There is possibly another bird or more people practicing falconry. Lastly, due to their clothing, I believe they are a part of a specific culture. This culture most likely practices falconry. Therefore, they are living out their duties as a part of this culture.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Claire, thanks for joining the conversation today. I'm wondering specifically what makes you say the attire is "war clothing?"
Julia M (AOSE)
I see 2 people. One is a young child, and one a young man. They seem to be wearing some traditional wear of some northern country. This is because they are wearing furs, long pants, and coats. However, the man is wearing modern sneakers, so they are not from a civilization untouched by the outside world. There is also what looks like a hawk next to them. The man seems to be tying a rope, perhaps tying something to the boy. They are outside in a fairly barren place. There are no visible trees or green vegetation. There is also a colorful piece of fabric, maybe it is a pouch, tied to the child.

@Julia M, thank you for your thoughtful comments. What do you think motivated the photographer to take this picture, to frame it in this way, to include the elements he/she chose to display?
Sean (Salisbury, New Brunswick)
I think a parent is teaching their child a traditional way to hunt.
Lara K (POQ)
@Sean what is your evidance why do you think this is true?
Rafael and Casper (Switzerland)
This picture seems to be in Mongolia. After some research into asian winter clothing, the people are wearing traditional clothing. However we can clearly see that the older person in the picture is seen wearing Lebron James basketball shoes. They seem to be participating in either a hunt or an event. They might be hunting due to traditional technique using falcons to kill the animals. However it would be strange to bring along an infant to such a gruesome scene. So they might be at a tradition event as it would seem more appropriate for a child.

@Rafael and Casper, thanks for commenting today. It's an important mental capacity to be able to juggle a variety of interpretations at the same time. You've done that here...weighing options, trying different scenarios to explain what's happening. Keep looking.
Siddharth and Salma (Basel)
In the picture we see a father and son next to a bird. They are wearing traditional clothes and wearing casual clothing underneath. We can see that the dad is rocking some LeBron 11 navy and green. The kid looks like he is 3-5 years old. Both of them are on top a mountain probably their there because of a cultural event.
Julia M (AOSE)
@Siddharth and Salma What type of cultural event could they be attending? Where could they be?
Cowen (International School of Basel)
Probably in Nepal or Mongolia judging from the falcon being tamed by what appears to be father and son. They tied the leg of the falcon in order to tame and control the falcon. While they have traditional dress it is complemented by lighting blue and venom green lebron 10s king edition falcon pro 360. The falcon will supposedly be used in hunting.
Jacobius and Oliveritulum (Basel, Switzerland)
This image shows a man and a boy. The boy is likely the son of the man. due to their clothing and ethnicity they are likely from Central Asia eg. Mongolia. they are likely people who are closely tied to their culture, therefore it is possible fanconry is closely tied to their culture and the father is passing this tradition to his son by teaching him how to command a falcon to hunt. They could be part of a nomadic group such as the Kyrgyz nomads.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Jacobius and Oliveritulum, my Latin friends, you've tied the people in the image to Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. What evidence from the image could help you narrow down your suppositions? My son is a teacher in Kyrgyzstan and I've asked him to weigh in on this picture. I'm extremely curious.
Caitlin (Basel, Switzerland)
We presume that this picture was taken in Siberia, based on the ethnicity of the people, the clothing they are wearing which reflect the climate, the falcon breed which is native to Siberia, and the terrain. The image depicts a young man with a child, potentially his son, or brother. He might be teaching the boy how to work with and train the falcon, because of the rope attached to the bird it seems like it is a pet which they are familiar with. This may be a cultural expectation as falcons have been known to be used for hunting. The boy is not scared of the falcon so it is likely that falconry is a normal activity for the boy and his family.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Caitlin, thanks for joining the conversation today. The relationship of the boy to the falcon has not really come up in any other comments. You've also concentrated on the relationship of the two individuals and conjectured perhaps siblings. this has also been absent from all other comments I've read. It's interesting to see the way in which different people respond to the same image.
Lorel and ede (Swtizerland)
It appears to be two people, possibly a father and his child. There is also a falcon which the man, the father, is tying to himself or the child with the long trailing brown string. The clothing that the two are wearing suggests that it is a cold(-er) climate but the dry brown plants and rocker terrane also appears to be quite a humid or dry. IT could be possible that the two are going hunting together and are tying the falcon to the child to either teach one of the two or to make sure they don't lose the falcon. The fur lines clothing also suggests that there has been hunting between the two of them before.

@Lorel and ede, thank you for the comments today. You've done some careful looking and have left me with a desire to hear the story of their earlier hunting exploits.
naomi & elliot (basel)
Two people, possibly father and child, wearing traditional cultural clothing. The older man is tieing a string to a bird for some reason. one possible reason could be that they R GOING HUNTING OR are training the bird for some task related to hunting. this could also be part of a festival of some kind hence the traditional clothing.
Hannah K. (AOSE)
@naomi & elliot Where do you think these people are located based on their traditional cultural clothing?
Indraneel and Felix (Basel, Switzerland)
They seem to be in a cold and mountainous region, judging from their clothes. Further evidence that tells us it could be a mountainous or wasteland-like region is the rocky land which is very sparsely covered with dry plants. In the photo, the land also seems to be gently sloping upwards (though this might be due to the angle from which the photo was taken). The man seems to be tying the rope to something. The rope is already connected to the bird's leg on the left (the bird appears to be a falcon or hawk). He could be tying it in order to keep it from flying away. The man and the boy (could be his son) could be living there. They might be there if they have recently captured the bird and could be trying to train it.
Claire (AOSE)
@Indraneel and Felix Why do you think they do not want the bird to fly away? Why might they be trying to train it?
Lola and Alice (North Pole)
In this picture, there is a father and a son based on the body language between them. Their clothing seems to be from a native culture in North America or Mongolia based on the furs and traditional style of clothing. They have a type of eagle, which they are probably training to hunt. There is a leash tied around the leg of the bird and the father it tieing the string in a knot. The older man, who could be the father may be teaching the younger boy how to use the bird in hunting.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Lola and Alice, thanks for responding today. What elements of the clothing could help you identify where these individual live?
Annika and Cat (Basel, Switzerland)
We think it's somewhere in North Asia, maybe even Russia or Mongolia. We think they're training the bird but their focus isn't on it. Maybe the dad is teaching the son the basics of falconry especially because of the string he's holding. They don't seem scared of the bird and the bird isn't scared of the people either. They're not super poor because they have a lot of clothing that is well maintained. There's a mix between traditional attire (like the coat) and modern clothing (like the shoes). It's maybe a festival because of the traditional attire, but it has some modern items. The child seems focused on something behind the camera, which means that there has to be something going on there (maybe another bird).
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Annika and Cat, thanks for joining us today. You've placed yourself in the picture, imagining what's going on around you. What do you motivated the photographer to take this picture?
ARM (Palermo, Italia)
The dad is wearing some fake lebrons 14, green and blue. He is tying a rope to the bird's feet, and he is giving it to the boy so that he can pet the bird. We think that the bird is a peregrine falcon, one of the fastest animals in our world. We think that the location is somewhere in Nepal, due to the clothes they are wearing, for example the racoon hat, and due to their facial features.
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@ARM, thanks for responding today. The guy's footwear is really engaging to some of you today! Are they LeBron 10, 11, or 14 as you suggest? You've also suggested that the hats are racoon. You motivated me to look at the range of this animal. You might want to check again on your hat identification.
Emily and Noah (Basel, Earth)
We reckon this is some kind of festival in an Asian country / culture (probs Tibet or China) and the older man is teaching the younger boy (maybe his son) how to work with the falcons since he is supervising him. We think it is a festival since the clothes that they are wearing mostly decorative and not practical for everyday use. The point of this festival is probably to appreciate the wildlife and ancient cultures of the area.
Illy and Izzy (International School Of Basel)
We think that the people are taking the falcon to either be trained to hunt or just go hunting as they have a rope in the falcon’s foot meaning it isn’t a wild falcon. It seems to be quite cold as they are wearing relatively thick clothing and hats. Maybe they are in a Mongolia or Tibet.
Jordan and Paul (Basel, Switzerland)
In the picture we see two people, sitting in out in the wilderness. We believe they are Mongolians because they are wearing traditional clothes and they do resemble an asian. The man is doing up the little boys shoes. The man is wearing fake lebrons and they are wearing clothes which show that it is winter. There is also a bird right next to the little boy. We believe they are going to some sort of traditional event and the father is just tieing up his son's shoes before they start walking again.
Julia M (AOSE)
@Jordan and Paul What do you think the bird is doing? Is it tame?
Jonathan Thompson (Livingston, Scotland)
We are class 2B at Cedarbank School in Livingston, Scotland. We think this could be a father and son in Mongolia training a hawk or eagle to hunt. We think this because we can see a bird of prey on the left. The people look of Asian origin. The raccoon hats also look central Asian in style. We can also see a string attached to the bird which suggests it is not a wild bird.
Anna and Amelia (Switzerland)
We think this image was taken in Mongolia due to the climate and background. We think they might continue to climb the mountain/hill to either train their bird or let it fly while still on the leash. These people are obviously culturally influenced due to their outfits however, they are wearing modern trainers which may show how they are embracing the culture while being practically using shoes that are good for rough terrain.
Claire (AOSE)
@Anna and Amelia Why might the want to keep the bird on the leash? Why do you think they are going to continue to climb up the hill?
VTS Moderator (Upstate NY)
@Anna and Amelia, thanks for joining the conversation today. You've got me thinking about the photographer and the motive for the particular way in which he/she framed the image. Would you please think about this and comment.
Azizjon A. (POQ)
@Anna and Amelia I also thought this picture was taken in Mongolia because of the bird and the clothing.
