U.S. Tracked Activists and Journalists as Migrant Caravans Headed to the Border

These caravans are increasingly Trump's fault and serve to rile up his supporters. Their silly fear makes them forget the symbolism of walls that are so un-American. Remember Berlin, remember Pink Floyd? During times of conflict, the border is the first place government will turn on it's own citizens, in addition to journalists. Soon they could be securing the ranches and towns near the border, detaining US citizens they don't trust. Like in Germany, people will forever wonder how and if their fellow Americans took part in an atrocity. We should be thanking Democrats now, for trying to save the Republicans before it is too late for them.

Nixon had his enemies list. We were appalled. Trump has his. We cheer.

You know, in law enforcement and border protection, selective profiling is a valid practice. Selective profiling allows law enforcement a better insight on the problems at hand. Just because you're a journalist doesn't mean you've got a free pass in and out of foreign countries. Welcome to life.

US citizen journalists enjoy civil rights under the US Constitution, including the civil right to gather the news. The US Supreme Court has held that: “There is an undoubted right to gather news 'from any source by means within the law.’ ” Houchins v. KQED, Inc., 438 U.S. 1 at p. 11. Persons who conspire to "injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate" journalists' from the exercise of their civil rights, including the right to gather the news, face criminal prosecution under Title 18 US Code §241 and, upon conviction, face penalties including imprisonment up to ten years And, if death, kidnapping or sexual abuse is attempted or committed, the offender may be "fined under this title or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death."

I can only imagine what our forefathers would think about what our government has become today. Those men and women who risked everything and fought so valiantly to free themselves from the tyranny and rule of the British empire. Those same people who drafted a constitution to protect the people from the abuses of government rule. A constitution whose very first amendment is to protect the freedom of speech and the free reporting of the press. I am sure they would now wish they could have wrote it more clearly and to add that any government personnel who abuses their power to be immediately removed from their position and face trail. The government has been abusing their powers more and more over the last 150 years but under the Trump administration I have not witnessed in my 51 years of life such a blatant attempt of crushing what little true democracy we have left. The attack on the press has become commonplace and even though the press is no longer a non-biased entity whose job should be just reporting the news as it is, but is now a politically motivated system of reporting, they still should be unwaveringly protected by the constitution. And the even sadder thing is that nobody will be held accountable for these unconditional abuses of powers, and even if somebody actually is, they will be nothing but a low-level fall guy (or girl) as like it always is.

I expect nothing less from agencies directed by a president with no knowledge of the constitution, no mission other than to serve the president’s whims and no goals except to make good on some ill-conceived and slogan-driven campaign promises. If such extra-constitutional and clumsily-executed policing is so ineffective on the marauding hordes of women and children, I can’t wait to see how this administration respinds to a real emergency.

Weird, it’s almost like maybe the least trusted professionals in America, 99% of whom are fringe leftists, whose editorial leaders openly stated that they were going to oppose the elected President the day after he was inaugurated, could be working with activists to help migrants storm our Southern borders. It’s actually not weird at all. I say don’t interview them. Don’t apply any scrutiny. Just consider the stories they choose to ignore when it comes to mass migration (the American citizens murdered and whose wages are suppressed), and the stories they choose to tell, consider the material support to migrants they’ve been giving on these marches, and don’t let them back in. I definitely didn’t start out as a Trump supporter, but I am one now. He’s right. The press are the enemy of the American people. They’re literally siding with people who are openly trying to storm our borders. Except for when they take brief brakes from this to lecture us all on why we should allow ISIS brides back into the U.S. Yes, the press are anti-American propagandists. And the ACLU no longer cares about protecting free speech. When the Democrats lose in 2020, this will be why. They’ve gone off the deep end, with help from the journalistic left.

Reading your first paragraph I thought you were talking about Mitch wanting to make Obama a one term President back in 08.

Mexico has offered to take asylum seekers; there are jobs available for them. Mexico would be the first safe place reached on their journey. What opportunities do they believe await them in the U.S.? I understand fleeing from violence caused by drug gangs. I don't understand the legality of migrating for economic reasons; where is that covered under international agreements re: asylum? If these migrants have no skills needed in an advanced society, what future can they have here? We give financial aid to their home countries; if that aid is compromised by corrupt governments, why are we providing aid and asylum? I am not a Trump voter, and I don't support separating children from parents. However, there is no clear policy on a mass migration across borders. Support systems are not open ended. I think we are all flying blind on this one.

@Linda Miilu Migration is DOWN. Only the nature if migration has changed from individuals to families.

These are authoritarian methods. Like East Germany, perhaps. Iran? Egypt? The list is long.

Build the wall !! need legal immigration not illegal immigration. Thanks a lot! Democrats
Karen Vaughan (Brooklyn)
@J These journalists came in legally through ports of entry, as US citizens. The problem is not lack of a wall but overreach of the government.
Dan (Sandy, Ut)
@J Hmm. For six years of the Obama administration Congress had a GOP majority. No grand walls were built and deportation numbers were high. For two years Trump faced a Congress with a GOP majority. No walls were built, no money appropriated for a grand wall. So, who should the blame really be placed on?
