One question for brothers Jared, Joel, Jon, Jordan, Austin, Josh and Jesse . OK, I get the "J" thing but how did Austin get away? What's the cat's name - and the dog, lizard, goldfish, too?
trenton (washington, d.c.)
Interesting article, but wrongly discounts the healing properties of THC currently under investigation by scientists worldwide.
Father of One (Oakland)
Reality TV show, here we come!
Luke (Florida)
Obviously not. He was just a seeker as many so-called self-proclaimed Christians are. Most have no be clue of what it means to be a true believer. They just check a box and go to social meetings each Sunday. Having no real relationship with the one they claim to follow. In the end they will be shocked and extremely disappointed...gnashing of teeth.

"Endocannabinoids are arguably one of the most widespread and versatile signaling molecules known to man." from https://www.uclahealth.org/cannabis/human-endocannabinoid-system : The discovery of the endocannabinoid system within all of us would be a good thing for all the people here calling "snake oil". Then find the mainstream journal articles about all the research. CBD works on the receptors within us. Receptors aren't there for no reason - they are meant to be there. I recently was genetically tested and found I am low on my endocannabinoid system receptors and would benefit from CBD. From
Weimaraner (Santa Barbara)
Was that party (recreational use) legal in Utah?
redplanet (Palo Alto, California)
@Weimaraner Yes. CBD is legal in all 50 states. It is not marijuana. (MJ would be legal in only a handful of states)
Isobeau Trybula (New York)
All the comments about this needing to be a reality TV show are just baffling. Why can't it just be reality? Do you think you're going to see something else if cameras delve into the minutiae for 22 minutes with 8 minutes of adverstisements? Reality still exists. It's right there if you look. It sounds like they're fairly busy making the product. I use these products, for myself and my animals, and they work.
Rob (Los Angeles)
That photo; Jesus, there ain't a runt in the litter.
Suzie130 (Texas)
@Rob I totally agree. I thought what a bunch of good looking guys!
Dan (NY)
After 11 children and 22 years, dad splits? My jaw dropped. You have 11 children with a person and then you leave? I'm at a loss for words.
Binky (Brooklyn)
This episode of the podcast Science Vs. compliments this story very well as it includes the brothers - https://www.gimletmedia.com/science-vs/cbd-weed-wonder-drug Gives the back-story for how the whole CBD thing got off the ground.
The Other Alan (Plainfield, NJ)
It's fitting they're all named with a 'J'. Must be time to light one up!
Kathryn (NY, NY)
Just began using CBD oil for fibromyalgia. It’s the only helpful thing so far and, trust me, I have tried everything. It has been a sixteen year journey - trying every treatment, supplement, prescription medicine, body work. Nothing helped me until CBD. Now, with medical supervision, I’m attempting to slowly wean myself off or down from prescription pain medications. My eleven year-old dog has disc disease and has been on CBD oil for a week. My observation is that it’s helping him get over this latest episode of pain, but there’s no way to interview him for this comment. It’s great that these men are able to help so many people and stay bonded as family. I wish them decades of continued success.
Graham Hackett (Oregon)
Can anybody remember the name of the show these guys were in a few years ago? I think it was on Discovery Channel or something.
Harris Silver (NYC)
@Graham Hackett Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Weed CNN Documentary
Graham Hackett (Oregon)
@Harris Silver No it was a multi episode show about the dispensaries in Colorado. Like a reality show.
Graham Hackett (Oregon)
@Graham Hackett It was called American Weed, if anyone else is wondering. Eight episodes in 2012.
Robert Holmen (Dallas)
"Josh Hetzler, a producer of “Before You Know It,” a film premiering at Sundance, worked with Charlotte’s Web to distribute CBD his entire cast and crew. " He "worked" with them? Was that really "work"? The reporter is absurdly over-stating the valor of what was really just calling someone up and placing an order.
Lauren Peterson (Olympia WA)
Familial entrepreneurs or folksy family band? You decide.
Ron Ulan (NYC)
I would think there is another Charlotte's Web that has the copyright to that name. Did they ask for some small remuneratiion? If its in the story above, I missed it.
Barbara (WaWa)
What about the sisters? Where do they stand in all of this? Nothing but a brief mention of them. They are part of this clan, no??
GNol (Chicago)
@Barbara they're mentioned at the beginning, but are not actively involved in the business.
Simon Malouf (Sonoma)
19 Kids and Counting meets Dazed and Confused. Someone pls make a reality show out of this.
frieda406 (scottsdale az)
We give a CBD oil, without THC, to one of our dogs who has a seizure disorder. We do not use this particular company‘s products. He went 65 days without a seizure, the longest he has gone in over a year. He does take 4 prescription medications that help regulate his seizures. We added the CBD oil last November. Our dog is the perfect subject to test this because he has no opinion. Whether something is a placebo or the real deal, he has no clue. All I know is what I see and what I see is he went a long time without a seizure. Both the University of Colorado and Cornell are studying the efficacy of CBD oil for pets. I look forward to their results.
Pamela L. (Burbank, CA)
As someone who has benefited greatly from using CBD, I'd like to point out the difference between hemp-derived CBD and full-spectrum CBD derived from the cannabis plant. Full-spectrum CBD offers more of a medicinal effect as it offers more terpenes and other cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. CBD derived from industrial hemp offers less of a medicinal effect and contains no THC. While both of these products can be beneficial, the consumer needs to know exactly what they want from either of these products and educate themselves before purchasing. In my experience, full-spectrum CBD, extracted using the CO2 method is a much more potent and beneficial product. Do your research and purchase wisely, as both of these products are pricey.
Joel Munson (Colorado)
@Pamela L. Charlotte's Web is not industrial hemp. It has a wide spectrum of cannabinoids, terps, and other phytocompounds. The only difference between it and marijuana is the amount of THC it contains- under 0.3%. CW offers products that are CO2 or alcohol extracted. It sounds like CW would fit your preferences.
Pamela L. (Burbank, CA)
@Joel Munson. Thanks for all the info. Through experimentation, I've settled on Papa & Barkley, Fiddler's Greens, Humboldt Harvest and a few others. Per your recommendation, I just might give CW a try. I'm always learning and on the lookout for new and worthwhile CBD products. Thanks again.
redplanet (Palo Alto, California)
@Joel Munson CW also makes an isolate product. (no THC at all).
Marilyn Roofnear (Windermere, Fl)
Surely someone out there will turn this into a TV hit (pun intended).
Irving Schwartz (Tallahassee, Florida)
Here come the new snake oil salesmen who drive Range Rovers instead of covered wagons. But their pitch is the same. Planted shrills and placebo patsies are miraculously cured. Who needs scientific proof of benefits? They claim that pot is created by nature so it is not harmful. But so are rattlesnakes, poison mushrooms and botulism. Medical marijuana is simply a marketing tool for big profits from recreational weed. It is making a lot of con artists rich. And who is paying the bill? The sick, the poor and the deluded who can’t afford ethical health care. These money grabbers are are breaking federal laws. But this is the Wild West redux. Step right up and give us your money. Our magic elixir will cure your rheumatiz, your hemroids, your hangovers and your sex life. Stick around folks, the dog trick show will follow. Ma Barker and her boys are back.
Nancy (Providence, RI)
@Irving Schwartz It is making a lot of con artists rich. Or, those patients could be taking Humira at $2500 every two weeks and making a different set of con artists richer.
Courtney (Colorado)
@Irving Schwartz . that's funny... you should try saying that to the parents of children with intractable epilepsy.
Darren Byrd (Denver)
@Irving Schwartz tell that to the dozens of people that I’ve seen it firsthand change their lives. My friends mom is 61 and had to give up excersising because of joint pain. After CBD she’s riding her bike and running again and is a much happier person. I have encountered several other people with similar stories. Maybe it didn’t work for you or someone you know but it’s definitely not “snake oil” like you are touting.
LucianoYYZ (Toronto)
Enjoyed the article. It's an unscripted TV show in the making - you just can't write this stuff. Good on them!!
joel m. (los angeles)
@LucianoYYZ "Vikings" for the toke generation.
Graham Hackett (Oregon)
@LucianoYYZ These guys had a show on Discovery or something a few years ago.
Alan Einstoss (Pittsburgh PA)
Sounds very greasy ,overflowing with verbal grease.
Lary (Telluride)
For a balanced perspective, take a read of Never Enough, by Judith Grisel.
Julie B (Ct)
Wait - the father split on all those kids? But wasn’t he “committed to Christianity and to God?”
Mark F. (Westchester, New York)
Whoever on the copydesk wrote this headline deserves a big fat bonus. And gets a tip o' the hat from me.
bill (Madison)
Maybe the Evil Weed is not so evil, after all.
Jesse Benjamin (Massachusetts)
Joel is Jon Hamm, and this is a promo for an upcoming HBO series.
Ian MacFarlane (Philadelphia)
This is a bit too hip for me. Start the seeds during Spring training, cull the males at the All Star break and harvest with the World Series. "béisbol"
Bucketomeat (The Zone)
@Ian MacFarlane Some say a hard freeze is the endpoint, not the Series.
Joseph (Montana)
Interesting article but seems like a fluff piece for the brothers who are really modern day snake oil salesmen (al be it very photogenic snake oil salesmen). There is little to no good evidence on the benefits of CBD. I empathize with those who have conditions that are not well managed with modern medicines but also worry that out of desperation they can be susupetible to seek "cures" that aren't well researched and possible may even be harmful. I would have appreciated a little more objectivity in the article.
Tim Dawson (Charlotte, NC)
@Joseph I would agree with you except that I have a couple of friends that I do business with who have some of the ailments described in the article. They both take CBD oil and swear by it. Let's hope that FDA will approve one day.
Joel Munson (Colorado)
@Joseph A purveyor of snake oil claims their product can cure anything that ails you. The brothers make no such claims. What is proven, however, is that supporting your endocannabinoid system promotes overall health and wellness in the body. That will materialize differently for every user, but it is known to be healthy. The scientific literature shows that CBD at high doses for long periods of time is well tolerated in humans with very minimal adverse effects.
Darren Byrd (Denver)
@Joel Munson Well said
Alan Burnham (Newport, ME)
We know these folks and Charlotte's Web help children like Charlotte with Dravet syndrome. Marijuana for medical use has been permitted in Israel since the early 1990s for cancer patients and those with pain-related illnesses such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, other chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder. Patients can smoke cannabis, ingest it in liquid and caplet form, or apply it to the skin as a balm. Time for the USA to wake up.
D. (Portland, OR)
Their quality control and purity sell this product. Living in Oregon among CBD everything, it's still the only label I buy. Period. They know their hemp.
Warren Bobrow (El Mundo)
CBD.. hmmmm. now how do you determine a safe dosage? And where is the hemp- not marijuana (cannabis) grown? Has it been tested? By whom? I'm happy that CBD does so much for so many, but comparing hemp to the stuff that gets us stoned is just wrong!
Toni (CO)
@Warren Bobrow CBD oil is currently being researched by John's Hopkin's University, Harvard, and others. You can find published research online. Currently, there is an FDA approved CBD oil, which tells you that yes, it has been tested, there are safe dosage guidelines, and you can find all of this information online. Good luck!
Ron Gibbons (Long Island)
What a great story! My son has cancer. He cannot eat always sick, cannot move around. As a parent it’s hard to watch him in this state. He is now on CBD every day. He had made 180 degrees turn. He just ran the NYC marathon. Thanks please keep these stories coming
rosy (Newtown PA)
What a great title for this article!
Beth Pierkowski (New England)
Thank you Stanley Family for setting the standard of helping others. I mean this with total respect - Are we sure these guys aren't from central casting for a movie about Real American Men - I mean, Loord ! :)
JoeJ
This is the FDA's most recent position on the regulation of these products: https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm628988.htm?source=techstories.org This is the Warning Letter FDA sent this company: https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2017/ucm583192.htm This is the FDA FAQs on marijuana usage: https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm421168.htm The bottom line is that the safety and efficacy of these products is unknown except for Epidiolex, Marinol, and Syndros. There is no evidence based research on how to use these products. Furthermore, company's manufacturing these products are not in complete adherence with basic good manufacturing practices and do not have adequate quality systems in place to monitor them. There will be those who are of the opinion that the FDA oversteps their authority. But when people start to die (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Compounding_Center_meningitis_outbreak) then everyone wants to know why FDA didn't prevent this.
E.B. (Brooklyn)
@JoeJ That outbreak you link has absolutely ZERO to do with anything in the story, or the product. Conflating two unrelated matters tells me you have some other agenda here. Try again. Phony moralists on the march in the era of Trump.
Terry (California)
Party on bros. Thanks for your service.
JAB (Cali)
A CBD party? CBD is not THC. That is like having an ibuprofen party.
Paul Shindler (NH)
Fantastic American success story. And this story is the direct opposite of the "snake oil" label last week that the Times put on another CBD story. CBD is not a cure all for everything, but the results from numerous, very serious issues, is nothing short of miraculous. What other things have we been totally lied to about?
Pete (Eugene)
So a plant whose possession and use has led to the incarceration, suffering, and disruption of untold millions (disproportionately of color), is now the source of untold billions for a few, (disproportionately white). What to think.
PB (Dallas)
@Pete this is hemp, not marijuana.
Jane S (San Francisco Bay)
All for this family and their success; it’s great they are building a business and creating a product that so many people find helpful. But I can’t help but think of the thousands of people STILL in jail for growing or possessing these same plants. What kinds of opportunities will they have? Where’s their IPO? Legislation around cannabis needs to address the criminal (in)justice system.
Connie (Canada)
A well written article on the description of a family business based on opportunity recognition. Hard work and a deep respect and understanding of the different skill sets needed to make a company thrive and grow.
Sharon Samyn (Michigan)
A great article that is inspiring, funny on how this family are helping so many with the growing and cultivating of Hemp a plant that has so many values for people, animals, and the planet. The research needs to continue. I have learned so much about hemp that I truly believe this is the Lords gift to healing our world. The seeds have been used for feeding birds for years. I found out they have around 11 grams of protien. For me this was very important because I was always low in Iron and became Anemic to the extreme that I almost died when my blood count went to 5 so low that I needed 3 pints of blood and so many Iron infusions to prevent me from having a heart attack. My Doctors did so many tests on me but could not figure out why my blood was always dropping. To tell my story in short I was not eating very healthy as a child. Developed Scolosis at 13, Had Harrington rods put in to straighten my spine, well no one told me they would break. They did after having 2 operations facing a third it took me 5 years to face it living with pain taking Tylenol, toxic pain pills for relief. Well after being on Medical Cannibiss,Hemp, and eating healty I am off all pain medications managing my pain with no Anemia. Thanking God!
john (kefalonia)
I really enjoyed this article. I learned a bit about hemp and that this family is also trying their best to provide a quality product that may help many people. But, my favorite aspect of the article was, as I read it, how heart-warming it was to me read how much the brothers/family seem to love and care for each other including the good-natured brotherly teasing.
yancync (Northern Virginia)
They are truly pioneers and have brought relief especially to those with chronic diseases with no cures. Many are able to cut back or even drop prescription drugs, which I'm sure has big pharma scared and eager to join in. As a parent of a child with late stage and thus a chronic form of Lyme disease plus many stubborn co-infections, I'm so grateful to what they've created. Thankfully, unlike so many marijuana growers, they chose to focus on producing a high CBD content, standardized and quality tested product rather than a high THC one, which is what growers assumed pot smokers would want. Now other producers are getting in the market. Do your research first and be willing to try several product lines because there are many strains out there with varying chemical compounds so it can take awhile to find one that works. And beware, there are plenty of scam companies out there. CW Hemp is not one of them.
AB (IL)
Such a great musical, featuring the hit song, "Bless Yore Beautiful High."
Courtney (Colorado)
Love the Stanley Family and what they have done and continue to do for hemp and CBD. They are the pioneers and with that comes a lot of criticism, especially from big pharma. Their oil continues to help so many families find a better quality of life. May we always have this as an option and have access to high quality, whole-plant CBD extracts.
