N.Y. Today: Is Amazon Still Coming to New York City?

What's really responsible is that otherwise-responsible media keep flogging this non-story. At the only demonstration, reporters and politicians outnumbered politicians. While many people certainly are unhappy with the deal, it seems clear that the vast, vast majority of New Yorkers have accepted it as a fait accompli.

Good summary. For media (including the Times) to swallow the rumor mongering from Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post about the Jeff Bezos-owned Amazon monopoly pulling out of the agreement is naive at best. Indeed, the quote "two people with direct knowledge of the company’s thinking said the article had gone too far and Amazon had no plans to back out" says it all.

If Amazon is scary they will count their blessings and leave town. I don't think they get the political / union climate in NYC

The jobs being created are professional jobs, tech jobs they will be filled with people in late twenties to mid thirties college educated a good percentage with advanced degrees most with massive amounts of college debt this would help them. Even after more than a decade the city is still too dependent on financial sector for revenue. A down turn in markets will be felt on social programs and agency budgets. Yes less be penny wise and pound foolish not have these jobs because a showboating freshman congresswoman who recently hung up her bar towel thinks she's the second coming of Evita Peron.

Amazon is a catch-22. If they don't come however will we dig out of the financial mess our political leaders have left us with NYCHA and the MTA? Sure the tax breaks to them sting, but they only get those by meeting certain job creation and revenue targets. In other words, do we say no to $12 million and take zero dollars because we couldn't get $20 million? While the gentrification argument is real, the converse too that is that we need more people making $120k+ here to fund all the social services that already exist. NYC has an estimated 1 million illegal immigrants in it already. De Blasio wants to give them all free healthcare. Speaker Johnson wants to give them half price metro cards. And neither wants to prosecute ones who simply jump the turnstile to pay the fair. If we're going to let our city be overrun by people who don't pay taxes and consume high amounts of social services, we need to increase our tax base. What a mess...

@JP: If we don't give Amazon $1.6 billion to come here, we have $1.6 billion more to spend on everything else. Which still won't fix the subways (or the MTA - a lost cause). And I don't trust anyone to hold Amazon to meeting its "target" goals. If you put a lot more $120,000/year jobs into NYC, will that make the homeless people go away? Will it make housing more affordable, or will it drive up the cost of housing b/c so many people are making $120,000/year? EXISTING millionaires and billionaires *could* be funding what needs to be funded, if we stopped giving tax abatements on $100 million condos! Look at how many of the super-expensive condos have tax abatements - we're abating taxes for people who don't need an abatement to entice them here; rather they'd do ANYTHING to be allowed to park their $$$ here instead of in their country of origin.

@L 1% of the population pays 46%of NYS taxes according to the notorious capitalist Cuomo. Chase them out and see how things work.
L (NYC)
@Bill: Then who's paying the other 54%? We regular working people? Chase regular workiing people out and see how things work!

"[Cuomo] jokes that he would change his name to “Amazon Cuomo” to bring the company here." Hey, New York: I never realized your Governor is such a funny guy. Maybe that's the reason he got reelected. It sure isn't because he does anything of value.
Sherri Rosen (New York, NY)
I saw a piece on the news the other night where they interviewed the residents of Queensbridge and they had the impression that Amazon was coming there to give THEM jobs. They could apply like everybody else will/would do.

Once upon a time people would come to New York City from everywhere to SHOP; to find and see and buy things they couldn’t get anywhere else. And they’d pay 8% sales tax to do it. The treasure hunt is over. Amazon gave EVERYONE EVERYWHERE access to all those things and more. And that’s a good thing, I guess. By all means let Amazon come and pay their dues like New Yorkers. Our biggest industry now is tourism. Everyone everywhere wants to come and visit this relic, still the greatest place. And they pay through the nose. It’s the incentives that bug me. With what Amazon and Cuomo spend on legal for their charm offensive alone...it just makes no sense. Come. Pay the admission. It’s worth it. Make New York better.

I deeply hope Amazon goes elsewhere. They DON'T need a tax break, and certainly not one of that magnitude. Where does that money come from? From the pockets of regular working people. And is Amazon going to have job for "regular working people" here? Only $125,000/year people, it seems. Meanwhile, we're having "congestion pricing" (for congestion created by NYC removing lanes for vehicles) SHOVED down our throats by the same government that wants to PAY Amazon to come here to create MORE congestion. There's no way the subway system or the rest of the infrastructure can deal with what Amazon will bring - the NY'ers who ALREADY live here and can barely commute in a timely way are the ones who are going to get the short end of the stick. Please GO AWAY, AMAZON - and take your helicopter pad with you!
Sherri Rosen (New York, NY)
@L Bravo!! I want to know why all of the politicians fought for this, but yet they're never around to fight for small businesses who are held hostage by greedy landlords who have destroyed this city? This city was built by small businesses and family owned businesses.
Bill (Des Moines)
@L Go away and take your high paying jobs that will be taxed to the hilt to pay for all the junk we give people. Let's punish them. Really???
HKGuy (Hell's Kitchen)
@L For every $125K salaried employee, there has to be three $55K salaried employee.

My mid size city would take an Amazon headquarters in a heartbeat. NYC has an abundance of economic opportunities for its residents.
cheerful dramatist (NYC)
I read A.O.C.'s twitter page and it does seem strange to me that in the negotiations with Amazon none of her community's concerns were addressed by Cuomo and our mayor. And also why all those tax breaks were offered? I can see how this could benefit Cuomo in his bid for president. I mean this whole deal smacks of crony capitalism. "Oh sure some pesky poor and middle class people will go under and have move out of the community and probably add to the homeless, but hey, them's the breaks. And say I got a terrible itch on my back would you mind Jeff..." If Bezos does not mind showing his private parts to the public and I actually admire him for that, I doubt very much if he minds destroying the lives of long time Queen's residents and putting a greater strain on NYC resources and gorging on the free money we are throwing at him. I grew up near Seattle and you ask the residents who used to live there what Amazon did for them. It ain't a pretty picture and even the money he gave back to the community there was mainly to benefit the affluent and not the workers. The bubble he lives in is very nice I must say, but he has no clue about the lives of the worker bees, or how the corrupt Cuomo has played so dirty that we all are doing with out things that we pay taxes for here.

Really would have liked the correction about alternate side parking over the weekend instead of today - i would have moved my car yesterday instead i got a ticket.
dcaryhart (SOBE)
People seeking middle-class rental housing are going to be hit hardest. The economic logic of the huge subsidy is questionable as well. Moreover, rapid transit is already strained. I live in South Beach now. I literally live off of Amazon including Whole Foods. I was very pleased that Amazon was not considering Miami-Dade.
N. Smith (New York City)
Given the fact that our antiquated transit system continues to deteriorate and buckle under an ever-increasing ridership, and now "Congestion Pricing" is supposed to save the MTA (but won't), it makes any financial incentives granted to multi-kazillionaires like Jeff Bezos and Amazon seem like an downright affront -- especially when he gets space for his helicopter!
ellienyc (New York City)
@N. Smith Not to mention the possibility that not all of those 25,000 jobs paying "average of $150,000 a year" go to people already living here and thousands more Amazon newcomers could further strain our infrastructure and housing market.
L (NYC)
@ellienyc: I agree, but I would go further and say that the Amazon newcomers WILL definitely further strain our infrastructure and the housing market. We are *already* seeing an impact on housing prices in LIC.

“Now move your car!” Tune of “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” (Billy Ocean classic) - This could help get people moving - moving their cars, anyway! Hey (Hey!) - You (Who?), Get out to your car (Who me?). Yes, you - get moving your car! Who's that reader, sitting there at that screen Who's that reader? Who's that reader, slowly sipping caffeine - So serene. Right at the top, this is what’s new There’s something you / have got to go do Thought you would toast a bagel. That was the plan Do this first and - then you can! Get off your P.C. get out to your car Get off of your Mac - whoa, get dressed first, maybe! Then out to your car- (Beep beep) Yeah! Get into your car, before it gets towed Oh I say hey (Hey) - You (Me?) Get moving your car!

Cleaning the trains with Tide -- okay. Cleaning them with Clorox -- much better. You need real bleach to kill what's going around down there. Feces and urine on the seats? Please use bleach. On the platforms too.

if NY loses the future, I hope Newark gets the work and growth. You can't fight the future or fund every program from one employer. Sad the idea that fighting gentrification will make the poor well off. taxes support our system.
Jeffrey Zuckerman (New York)
If New York loses Amazon and the thousand of jobs it would bring, Ocasio-Cortez, the City Council and their supporters will have a lot of explaining to do. I see a lot of anger but not a lot of smarts in getting things done for New York. If you do not like the Amazon deal, work constructively to Improve it. It is easy to say no or to criticize and vent. That is the Trump model. It is more difficult work to create something of positive and lasting value.
ellienyc (New York City)
@Jeffrey Zuckerman I think one way Amazon could improve the deal would be to make it clear exactly how many of those 25,000 jobs paying avg of $150,000 a year are expected to go to current NYC residents & not residents of Seattle, Portland, Denver, Boulder, Austin, Chicago or anywhere else they may be recruited from. I think people might appreciate some assurance the jobs for local folks are not just the lower-paid cafeteria, cleaning & security jobs that would have to be filled locally. In the specifications released when Amazon started this search they indicated, among other things, that access to the out of doors and outdoors activities like skiing and hiking were important. I assumed from that they were looking to guarantee Seattle and other western employees accustomed to that lifestyle could have it here too. On the other hand, I suppose this could just be the approved Amazon lifestyle and a sign it would expect people hired from Queens to join the Amazon skiing and hiking clubs.
Bill (Des Moines)
@ellienyc Who cares where the people come from. They pay taxes which will pay for all of AO C's free stuff!!!
Ty (NYC)
I thought Amazon would have come here regardless of the tax breaks. I also now think that NYC has so many issues with infrastructure, transportation, high costs etc., that maybe Amazon would consider another location. Likely, a more moldeable city that can be directly influenced and helped by Amazon. Time will tell...

Isn’t it amazing the possibilities a smile and a chat with another human can bring.
