Learning With: ‘The Hummingbird as Warrior: Evolution of a Fierce and Furious Beak’

This article was fascinating. You always think of hummingbirds as beautiful, graceful birds, sipping sweet nectar from flowers, but this video and article show a different side to these birds. I learned so much from this article. I had no idea that hummingbirds had forked tongues, or that they fought so much over food. I think it is also amazing that the Aztecs realized the ferocity of the hummingbird, and that their war god was one. Another group of animals to me that combine beauty and fierceness are big cats. They are beautiful, majestic, and fierce. I like the poem by D. H. Lawrence. My favorite line would be, "Probably he was a jabbing, terrifying monster." This shows, with hint of sarcasm, that he wasn't fooled by the beauty and grace of hummingbirds.
