Polar Vortex

Teeth chattering, nose red, frosty eyelashes, and rosy cheeks. The arctic wind hits my face as I walk through the falling snow. Trying to clench to every bit of warmth that I can get from the layers of clothes that are on my body. I don’t know why I decided to come outside during this Polar Vortex. Maybe I just like to admire the the white snowflakes come down from the cloudy skies that are above me. Each snowflake having there own uniqueness to them that I seem to love. But I think it's time to go back into my house and seek warmth in front of the fire while drinking hot cocoa with little marshmallows. Seems like a plan to me.

I do not particularly like the winter weather or the winter winds. However, I do like the cool breezy days where the winds are calm and not as strong. The days were its cold to enjoy hot chocolate and have fun times out in the cold. I dislike the days were its below freezing with sharp winds. Recently the weather has not been something I've enjoyed. With the temperatures being in the single digits, I found that I really do not like cold weather all that much. With freezing temperatures and crazy fast winds I rather spend my days in my warm house, particularly my room. I favor the other seasons more than winter, I personally enjoy the summer the most.
Ahsaan M. (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I thrive in the cold, but I don't like wind. I love the winter because I can go skiing, sledding and basically do everything in the snow. I also like drinking hot chocolate, and coming inside, from outside in the snow, so I can run around in my pajamas. The only thing I don't like about winter is that most outdoor events are canceled due to inclement weather, and that I have to wear boots a lot. I do like hot weather because I can go swimming and there is a less chance of getting sick. Sometimes the heat stinks though because I get really dehydrated a lot. One other thing about cold weather that makes me mad is how sometimes, when I play sports like baseball in early spring it could get super cold which is brutal when you hit the ball because it stings badly. I'm happy that we're are not getting weather as cold as Chicago because that would be straight up painful.
Angela Xhori (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
Winter is one of my least favorite times of year. In winter, you have to bundle up and wear extra layers adding so much time to how long it takes to leave the house and how long it takes to put things away in my locker and take the layers off. I spend snow days on my house's balcony. Because it has a roof, I am protected from the snow/rain but still get the fresh air. That is one upside to winter, it is not humid and the air feels very clean and crisp.
G Jap (Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
I personally like Winter because of the cool temperatures and snow. As someone who is a denizen of a big city, I feel that the cool temperature makes everyone more peaceful and quiet. The cold temperature also feels soothing, of course when there is no wind. Winter is also a great time for getting together with family, and I feel that most of my best memories take place during the season. My absolute favorite part of Winter however is the clothing. I love wearing sweaters, and Winter is the best time to wear them. If you took a look at all my clothing, more than half of it would be just sweaters. In addition to sweaters, I also like wearing Winter apparel such as coats, gloves, earmuffs, and more. Winter probably has the most comfortable clothing out of all the seasons, and it's what I like most about it.
Aryan Patel (Philadelphia, PA Masterman)
I don't really like the cold weather because it prevents me from going outside and keeps me confined inside most of the time. I like to go outside and play sports but with the cold, I need to stay inside. I am one of those people who get cold very easily I am usually earing 3 layers in November and all the way through to around March. When it is cold or it is a snowy day, I usually stay inside if I didn't have school, and stick to electronics. I will just hang around the house playing video games or watching my iPad. -As a person who lives in Philadelphia, we are never guaranteed snow, and when it comes, you never know how bad it will be until it gets there. The cold has not really affected me that much but I do know that people in Chicago will be experiencing -50 degrees, which is pure torture. I hope that I will never have to be in an environment where it is that cold.
Naiima Jabati (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I usually prefer colder weather over warmer weather because I rather be cold and warm up in warm clothing than sweat and jot do much to help it. This season has many of my favorite holidays and it seem like a peaceful state of enjoyment and happiness, besides the fact that there are storms that destroy. I spend my cold and winter days at home watching tv and drinking something warm, like hot chocolate. I feel bad for the people that undergo extreme cold weathers and have to experience it for a long period of time. But I am glad that I don’t have to experience this because this can get in the way for many of everyday things.
Michael Fenerty (Julia R. Masterman)
I hate the winter weather. I live in Philadelphia and it is freezing cold outside. I could get frostbite any second, and I still have school. On my way to school, 3 traffic lights froze because it was so cold. Plus, the car never even heated up. It is too cold and I can't stand it. I know many students that stayed home today because of the climate outside. Nobody should have to go through this. It brings too much work that has to be done in the city. I oppose to this weather.
Molly Flaxman (Masterman School Philadelphia)
I am not happy about the extreme cold. I love summer becuase of the beautiful weather, and in winter I prefer staying in and wishing it were summer. I am spoiled with warm weather and for me, 40 degrees is basically -50. We get pretty cold weather here in Philly. Right now it is 6 degrees out, so you know I am in for the whole week. I am really twisted becuase even though I hate the cold, I love snow. I love the feeling of the thick crunchy snow, and srtuggling to walk through it. Bu my favorite part of snow, is getting off school. I spend snow days out in the snow only for an hour or so. I mainly spend them wtching winter movies and drinking hot tea and baked cookies. Overall, I hate cold, but like snow alot.
Kristina Kitsul (Masterman Philadelphia)
Personally, I hate the cold weather. But I am certainly not the biggest fan of hot weather either. That's why I like the fall and spring. However, this year it has been very, very cold. Even though I am not in Chicago or Minneapolis, who are getting double-digit negatives, it has still been hard to handle this cold. Although, I don't mind the cold as much as I do the wind. It makes it really hard to even be outside for longer than a few minutes. Typically, on really cold days I stay inside and watch Netflix, which is part of the reason why I don't mind the cold as much. However, it doesn't prevent me from playing outside and just, in general, it causes chaos. All in all, there are more negatives than positives to the cold weather. I hate having to wear so many layers because I get really, really irritated. It just bothers me so much that we still have to go to school with insanely low temperatures and it sucks even more that when you get inside you start to feel all icky because of the heaters in the building.
Anna Praticò (J. R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
Personally, I love winter, I always have. I love the snowstorms, the warm cozy blankets, the hot chocolate, the ice skating, and the list goes on. The only downside to cold seasons are the fact that it's very common to get sick, which can ruin your life temporarily... Or at least it feels like it. I really wish Philadelphia got more snow then it does, and for once, we could have a white Christmas like in all the movies. However, I see that's getting especially difficult, considering our friend global warming has a different opinion on cold weather. I live in center city, so I don't really get that much snow if any at all, but more so slush, which is not nearly as magical, or clean-looking. But whenever I go to my grandma's house, who lives in the Poconos, it's a winter Wonderland. I enjoy making snowmen that are taller than five inches, and I take pleasure in eating fresh snow-cones. I love the joy winter brings, and I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world if we only had one season... Winter!!
Samuel Hamilton (Masterman)
This extreme cold is perfectly fine with me, and I actually welcome it as a wonderful change from this very warm winter. Now, that being said I am not in Chicago and I am not getting double-digit negatives. I believe, that it is much better to have the cold than the heat. This is because I don’t get cold very easily and because you can put more layers on to combat the cold, but there are only so many layers you can take off. I have always loved the winter, it brings the cold and snow, but recently due to global climate change our winters are getting colder and less predictable. The only things that I don’t like about the cold are the wind and not being able to run when I have to. I also find slightly annoying and slightly amusing the looks that people on the street give me when I’m wearing shorts in 40-degree weather. One of the many wonderful things about the cold is that lots of people hate it. While this statement sounds cruel, there is a method to my madness. The people that don’t like the cold either stay inside, take public trans, or drive, this lets people like me have the streets more open. This makes h=getting around by foot easier. All in all, I don’t think that this weather is to bad, but that is my completely biased opinion.
Julia Fede (J R Masterman [Philadelphia, PA])
As far as I know, nobody I know of in the Midwest has been bothered by the polar vortex, but who knows? Sometimes, I like the cold weather, but sometimes it can be too much to handle. On some days, you just want to curl up on the sofa with an endless supply of hot chocolate and binge watch Netflix the whole day. I live in a low populated neighborhood that’s close to Fairmount Park, so I tend to get a lot more snow at my house than in the city. For example, if there is 2-3 inches of snow in Center City, the will be at least twice as much snow in my neighborhood. Two weeks ago, my friend was over and it had snowed that morning, so we went outside and were able to have a snowball fight and climbed the tree for like an hour, because we had enough snow that stuck.
Allison (MA)
I live in New England, so I do not feel any abnormal affects of this winter, because winters here are always known for being frigid and snowy. Sometimes we have more snow on certain winters, and sometimes we have less, because it depends on what year it is. I sometimes enjoy aspects of winter weather, but it is certainly not my favorite season. The things that I like about winter would probably be the snow, and Christmas, because that holiday falls in the season of winter. I like the first snow of the season and I like snow within two days of it having fallen, because after those first couple days, the snow always becomes icy and dirty and the novelty of the beauty of the snow has worn off. I do not like the cold weather all the time, because I enjoy being outdoors and do not like being cooped up inside all of the time. I also do not like how during the winter, people get sick more, and it is an unsanitary time of year. On cold snowy days, I enjoy staying inside more than going out, and I like to sit in my bed and watch the snow fall outside while watching Netflix or doing my homework. It is the most cozy to stay home and stay warm inside. I sometimes like to go walking in the woods in the winter. Winter is not my favorite season but there are certain aspects of it that are enjoyable.
George Siokos (Masterman Philadelphia PA)
I would do anything for snow. I feel like the people up north are lucky as they get all the powder and here in Philadelphia, it’s hot. I don’t have anyone in my family that gets affected by snow and freezing temperatures. Freezing temperatures are my favourite type of weather. In my school I like opening the windows because it is too hot, but a certain teacher dislikes the windows open and they end up staying closed. I hate the summer and I love the winter, but my parents disagree to their full extent. There is nothing I dislike about this weather and winter. Its magical, in my opinion. It’s just fun when your week gets cut off short because of foot or to of white powder falls from the sky. One of the best things to do in the winter is sledding. Hands down. It’s great when you can sled from your yard down the stairs, through the street, then down the hill, and not get yelled at or run over! You can also throw snowballs at cars driving by which i advise to the full extent for the best winter action (not actually. Please do not try this at home, i am not liable). It’s best to spend the cold days outside, where the world is different from the way you left it before the freeze, it’s very fun to explore this new environment. Personally, Philadelphia doesn't get as much snow as it used to (it used to get a lot in city records, which are at local libraries). I wish Philly got more snow and coldness, and we would if global warming wasn’t a thing.
Darlene (Philadelphia,PA)
In my opinion, the cold weather is horrible and I don't see how people can feel happy leaving their warm homes to the harsh winds and below freezing degrees to simply "play" outside. One thing I do enjoy about winter is that I usually earn some money for shoveling people's driveways and taking the snow off their cars.I admit I used to love playing in the snow then I kept on getting sick and I realized the cold wasn't for me. Nowadays when it is snowing I like to spend my evenings in my bed binge watching Netflix and CW series and occasionally watching FOX series. Sometimes my family and I will play board/card games together. Then, watch a family movie together. Currently living in Philadelphia I don't hate the weather here, but I'd much rather live closer to the equator because no matter what I just love being warm. There are some really cold days and then you add the gusty winds which make you feel even colder, but I could survive if I had to live my whole life here.
Abibat Lateef (Julia R. Masterman)
I absolutely dislike winter weather especially when temperatures are really low outside. it's horrendous to travel in the type of weather. With such low temperatures outside, you're freezing just as much inside even with the heaters on. I especially hate when a huge snow storm hits in the middle of the day while students are at school and people at work. There is tons of traffic and it takes hours to get home. This has happened to me last year and it took 4 hours to get home. I would prefer cool weather all year not too hot or cold, but in my area, the temperatures vary and it can get really hot or really cold. Cold temperatures in my area aren’t as bad compared to other locations around the globe however such as the polar vortex in the mid west. Some places have terribly cold temperatures all year round, which gets much worse in the winter. The temperatures in polar vortex areas are dropping dangerously low. It's terrifying to think of conditions the people living in this region are in at the moment.
Teddy Santos (Julia R. Masterman)
Personally, I hate the cold weather. Especially when I have to play soccer outside! It is so cold and with the wind chill it feels even more cold. My toes get numb and well my fingers, they get numb in 1 minute. Winter soccer is horrible but I do like playing outside with my friends when it's snowing. We usually go outside for 1 hour or 2 and then we go in my house and have hot chocolate and then play video games. That's why I like winter, we have a reason to stay inside and play video games all day. It's too cold to go outside all day so why not spend the day inside in a very warm and cozy temperature. I am sometimes mad because it doesn’t snow very often where I live and when it does there is usually only 1 or 2 inches on the ground. If I would score the season of winter out of 10, I would give it a 5.
Sophia (Masterman)
Winter is an interesting season, and sometimes I question whether I like it or not. I think that the winter weather is good, but only to an extent. I am one of those people who is always complaining about being hot, so I like when it is cold because it makes me feel less irritated. On the other hand, I do not like when it is too cold because then I have to wear a huge jacket with a scarve, hat and all of those accessories. This is one of the components I hate the most. Being enclosed in a huge jacket makes me feel uncomfortable. In addition, if there was bad weather, they would cancel school. I want to go to school, so I would be aggravated by that. However, the polar vortex that has invaded the Midwest seems brutal. By just imagining, having to stay at home and not being able to go out seems horrifying. I hope the people in this region push through it, and it clears up so they could resume their normal lives.
Jason S. (Philadelphia, PA, Masterman)
When first I heard about this, I asked my friends and peers, "Are you talking Celsius?", but alas, Americans never talk Celsius, so I faced the disbelief and shock of hearing that people just over in Wisconsin were facing -50° Fahrenheit weather (don't get me wrong, Wisconsin is over 1,000 miles from here, but it's still pretty close for the kind of weather that they were getting!)! As I look at the image provided at the top of the page, I sincerely hope that that figure is not walking their dog (I assume that the figure to the left is a dog!) just to give it some exercise! It can get really dangerous walking around out there! I also hope that kids don't have to go to school in this weather, and that they get a snow day or a few until all of this clears!
Dante (Julia R. Masterman)
I feel a huge sense of fear for what the Midwest is going to have to endure. As I live in Philadelphia, cold days are typical for us during the winter. We usually have about 60 degree temperatures or below. When the cold days come, we usually act like it is the coldest days in the world. We wear lots of winter gear, including gloves and mittens, and large coats and hats. Then, we say, “Ooh! This is really, really, really cold!” But, upon reading this article, I can’t even begin to imagine what could really be “Ooh! This is really, really, really cold!” Never, would I ever imagine dealing with low subzero temperatures. Absolute zero would be more than enough for me. But, -50 degree temperatures is too extreme. It would be the worst living nightmare I could ever have. People would be stuck in their homes, unable to even walk outside, because they would be risking frostbite or even worst. People would need to shut all their windows, and make a bonfire out of their fireplaces. I could imagine they would be wearing a full-blown winter suit inside their homes too. It is very sad that people need to suffer such extreme cold like the people in the Midwest will. All I can hope, is that those people are prepared enough to endure the polar vortex, and be safe.
Ayush Pandejee (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
Part 2: I forgot to add this: also with the new season, video games come out with special skins or packs. I also learned how to snowboard last year, so I'm looking forward to snow. Thanks for reading.
Hanna Sh (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Personally, I do NOT like being too cold or too hot. Unlike other who can literally wear ripped ankle jeans in such weather (many of the people I know), I cannot. I have to put on MORE clothes and sometimes more than one pair of thick socks. I find weather too cold irritating, since it gets me so numb and cold. I feel like it is overall a bad feeling that I don’t like experiencing. During cold or snowy days, I enjoy having days off of school and staying inside with a friend over at my house. We have a movie marathon and eat snacks. It’s always fun staying in with someone who you can always count on to have a good time with although every once in a while, it’s good to go outside and play in the snow. I used to go outside and play in the snow (with a sled too) with my dad and brother all the time a few years ago, but now I just get too cold for me to handle, or I simply don’t feel like it or have other things to do. When it’s very cold outside, people generally would want to be warmer -- it’s common sense. That’s the reason so many people go to Florida/Mexico/Dominican Republic during winter break -- to escape the vicious cold weather. I understand that perfectly, since I was one of the people to left to Florida this winter break (ALTHOUGH it’s much colder now than it was during winter break). Also, I feel really bad for the people that are in Chicago experiencing such extreme weather, because I know that I DEFINITELY wouldn’t be able to deal with such cold temperatures.
Ian Birley (Masterman Philadelphia)
I love a cold winter, and just in general, but even I think that this cold is a bit excessive. I hope the people in Chicago are ok.
Ivan Gutsol (Julia R. Masterman)
Man, how much I would love to be there. No school, no work, tons of snow. I could just imagine sitting near a warm campfire under blankets eating a delicious feast, holidays all over again, but of course it would suck if the electricity would go out and you run out of food, not fun. I do feel bad for the lower middle class or poor people whose houses might be damaged, I can’t imagine how painful it is for the people living on the streets - 50 degrees, here in Philly it is considered super cold at 20 degrees.
Jonah A. (Masterman School)
Man, this is some crazy weather. I am from Philadelphia, where it is pretty cold right now, but not to the point where they are closing schools. I do not mind it however, because my parents won’t let me go outside because of the cold, so I rarely experience it. However, the cold front hasn’t completely set in yet, so I haven’t experienced the worst of it yet. But, I do play hockey so I do have some tolerance to the cold. In conclusion, those are my thoughts on the Polar Vortex hitting the continental United States this winter.
Tino K. (Masterman Philadelphia)
Personally, I enjoy the cold weather. What I love about the season is that there is always snow, and there is always enough of it to go sledding. I like to spend cold or snowy days by grabbing my coat and my sled, then going to a big hill without any trees near my house and just slide down it. I love the feeling of sledding, because of the exhilarating moment when you start to gather speed, and because of the feeling that you are out of control and yet you know nothing bad can happen to you. If I don't get cold weather where I live it puts me in a grumpy mood because without the snow, all that's left is the cold, the same cold that makes you put on a huge coat that impedes you from doing any real exercise. In summary, the winter is really fun for me because of the small chance of snow where you can go sledding, and because of all the holidays celebrated with family, but if those two things were canceled out that I really would not winter at all.
Ayush Pandejee (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I love the polar weather because of one reason, my head. I have a migration issue that makes my head hurt because of noise and the heat. So for me, the cold weather is perfect because I have to have fun and not worry about my problem.
Lily Sklaver (J.R Masterman School, Philadelphia )
Winter is one of my favorite seasons, mainly because of the snow and the cold. Besides the fact that there is a multitude of delicious winter beverages, waking up to a snow covered sidewalk makes your day. Winter does have its downsides, such as the fact that walking around in the winter when it's below freezing is awful. As well as using the roads to travel, or if you take public transportation around the city. Living in the heart of Philadelphia, I depend on the subway and bus system to get around the city. When it snows, there is a lot of traffic or the routes I take are closed. Which is unhelpful for getting to and from school, for example, I was going home on the bus one day during a blizzard, and the side of the bus flew off, which did not help, because then I had to walk a mile in a snowstorm. But when it does snow, I prefer to stay indoors. I usually invite my friend over and have a movie or game night. Which in my opinion is better than being in the freezing cold. However, when it stops snowing, and there is snow covering the ground, is when I'll enjoy being outside. I also have a dog, so I, unfortunately, have to walk in the frigid weather. But, when everything's settled, it's like walking in a winter wonderland.
Benjamin Chiem (J.R. Masterman - Philadelphia, PA)
I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania so I'm not affected by snow yet but I am affected by the frigid temperatures. I enjoy winter because I can keep applying layers to keep warm in the winter but I can't do that in the summer. I also enjoy it when it snows because I most likely do not have to go to school. But I don't like winter sometimes because it can be too chilly and I wouldn't want to get out of bed because I'm too comfortable. However, when it does snow and I don't have school, I like to watch YouTube, play video games, and read books. I enjoy going outside and it's snowing because it looks amazing and the fact that it only occurs a couple times a year makes it better because it doesn't snow sometimes. It is kind of a headache sometimes because it's hard to drive and walk in the snow and you can get soaked easily and then it becomes extremely cold.
Sivan Frankel (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
Since I live in Philadelphia, I have not been hit as hard with the polar vortex as other places have been. Temperatures have plunged for us, but thankfully, they are remaining in the positive numbers. I know that Chicago, however, has been hit ver hard by the polar vortex, with high temperatures in the negative numbers, and coincidentally, this is the week when my mother is in Chicago for a business trip. Luckily, though, she has been staying warm. I am in no way enjoying the dropping temperatures, and in general I do not like cold weather. I have always favored warmth over cold, perhaps because I was born in June, and winter is my least favorite season. It's hard to describe, but something about the sensation of being cold has always bothered me. I have developed a few habits because of this, such as taking a sweatshirt wherever I go, but when I'm waiting for a bus and feeling like my nose is going to turn into a block of ice and fall off, I'm still miserable. I hope that the polar vortex passes soon, not only for myself, but for all those stuck with temperatures in the -10s and -20s. I will be glad when it's over, but to be honest, I won't be fully happy until summer starts.
Hope A (Masterman, Philly)
I hate cold weather. I do have an unpopular opinion of rather being hot than cold, so this news is kind of scary to me. The only good things that come out of cold weather are snow, enjoyable running weather (depending on how cold it is), and having school off, which would be nice for me to just finish up my load of homework. Despite those, there are so many more advantages of warm weather. Many people will say that "you can't take off layers in the hot but you can keep adding layers in the cold". However, I am always still cold no matter how many jackets I put on. For my personal experience with snow, I sympathize with the residents of Chicago and the midwest area. A lot of them probably were not prepared for the polar vortex and are now scrambling around trying to get the supplies needed to stay warm. I especially feel bad for the homeless people. While there are social service agencies warning them about the extreme weather, they don’t have a designated place to stay except for a warming center. Even more, many homeless people will either choose or be forced to stay outside to protect their belongings, avoid shelters where they have experienced a traumatic event, or stay with their partners to prevent being separated. They are having to face this polar vortex without the resources the rest of the community has.
Nicolas Dorazio (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
The only reason I like snow is because it can mean no school. People always tell me to get out and enjoy winter. I would rather just stay inside and drink hot chocolate and play on my Nintendo Switch. I find myself more at home, in my house, or indoor anywhere. I don’t like summer, and I don’t like winter. Personally, it seems like way too much work to have to put on all these clothes just so you can go outside for a couple hours then have to take them all off. Life is just easier when you’re inside. There is no food outside, there are no bathrooms outside, and for the most part you can’t just lay down and fall asleep outside. You have all of that stuff inside. My preferable day is just reading some books, playing some Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and staying warm. It is very, very hard to read a book or play video games when you can’t move your fingers because of oversized gloves or frostbite. Inside, you can just feel lazy and sleep. Snow every now and then is great, but I’d rather it just be very cold and very icy. This pretty much guarantees a day off, if not two or three. In Philadelphia, it doesn’t usually get all too cold, but something about this week’s forecast tells me that I will definitely need to stay inside. Extreme temperatures are just annoying and get in the way of fun.
Sienna Shelton (Masterman, Philadephia)
I feel terrible for the residents of Chicago and Minneapolis, and for the others who have been affected by the Polar Vortex. It can probably be hard for people to walk outside in the freezing temperature, and that can be a cause of snow. People who are living in this dangerous weather are probably scared, and just want everything to end. This is not a normal snowstorm, and I really hope that everyone will stay off the roads and be safe. Personally, I really only enjoy winter weather when it snows, because it makes me feel cheerful inside. I especially love when I get a day off, where I can just relax and play in the snow, and drink hot chocolate. I have not been sledding many times, but it was really fun when I went. When it doesn’t snow, I don’t like the winter weather. I take public transportation, so waiting in the freezing weather can really be a bother. However, I would definitely take no snow over the Polar Vortex, because I just want everyone to be safe in this threatening climate.
Hank (Philadelphia, PA)
No one I know is being affected by the storm and I actually really like the cold because I would rather be really cold than really hot.I like wintertime because you don't have to go to school as much and we have a lot of breaks like for storms or christmas.I especially love playing my games, seeing family, drinking hot chocolate, getting presents, and generally just having a good time.
Max Linneman (Masterman Philly)
Cold and hot weather both cause me to be a little bit uncomfortable but still I have never been in a situation where it has been this cold. I mean I have been around temperatures that were -10 degrees fahrenheit but not even close to -50 degrees. Usually when it snows bad we either don't have school or public transportation gets very messed up. I remember one day last year when I had to wait 5 hours to get home because my train wouldn't come into the station because the ice made it too dangerous. Ice and snows can cause a lot of trouble for people who don't live close to school because like I said public transportation could be really slowed and also if you drive to school it could take like 1 hours more time. So overall I wouldn't want to be in this weather but I hope they are okay.
Jared Way-Gregory (Masterman, Philly)
Nobody I know is being affected by the storm. I do enjoy the winter weather because I haven't ever really cared for the cold. I usually go outside without a coat and only a sweatshirt. I like multiple things about the winter season from the snowball fights with my brother to the warm cider while playing Black Ops. I do dislike somethings though because sometimes my friend's aren't allowed to play outside because their parents say its too cold or my mom would say that. I spend most of the cold days in the house just playing on my Xbox or doing homework considering if we had any or even had school.
Emilio Ehrlich (Julia R. Materman, Philadelphia)
I do like the cold weather but it has not really affected me this year because we have not got a lot of it yet. I like playing in the snow and getting days off from school. But I do not like it when its slush or just a tiny bit of snow. Because then theirs nothing to do. I don't like when we cant go outside because of it. But I still like the cold weather
Rachel W (Masterman, Philadelphia)
Of course like any winter, people I know including myself will be affected by the snow and frigid temperatures. I could barely sleep last night because of how cold it was! I can not imagine how colder it can get in the Midwest. Although many people prefer summer over winter or spring over fall, I prefer the colder seasons much more such as winter. I like winter because of how picturesque and elegant it looks when it snows or rains. I like seeing the streets covered in snow or rain although some people might find it irritating, stressful, or slippery. Winter clothes are also able to be layered, unlike in the summer where you can take off just so many layers. However, even if I express how much I love the cold for days, the cold does get to me sometimes in the winter and it does cause some trouble when I am going home from school, but when I do get home and spend the weekend in cold days, I normally stay at home. I have been drinking hot chocolate occasionally for the past week or so and I think simply drinking warm drinks or walking around outside on a cold weekend is ideal for me.
Maia Keenan (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I live in Philadelphia so we might get snow and it is going to be cold but it is not as bad as some other places which are getting it much worse. I do like winter weather but at times I think that it gets too cold and I would rather be in warmer months. However I feel like the same thing happens to me in the summer. I always want the weather that I don't have. I like how I am able to wear comfortable clothes like sweatshirts that would be too hot for the summer. I also like winter because sometimes I just like the cold and how it feels. I don't like the fact that sometimes it gets too cold and you have to where a lot of layers. When there is a snow days I usually have to shovel my driveway before I do anything else, but after that I usually just play in the snow. On cold days, I normally spend the day in my house just watching TV.
Arjun Ahya (Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
-In Philadelphia, we don't usually get too heavy snow, but I do have an Aunt that lives in Chicago. I doubt she will go outside during the polar vortex. The temperatures will be colder than Antarctica, and you can easily get frostbite in a matter of minutes. Cold weather affects everybody, because the road can freeze up and become icy. You have to be careful when you are driving that you do not slip and crash, and you also have to be careful as a pedestrian that you do not get hit by a car. -I personally love winter weather, especially when it snows. Me and my family will sometimes go up to a close skiing/snowboarding mountain to have some fun on the slopes. I love snowboarding and I want to go any chance I can get. If we can't go up to a mountain, I love playing football in the snow, and having snowball fights. When it is snowing outside, I am barely ever inside. I only dislike it because I get sick more often during the winter, due to bacteria being drawn to your heating system but that is about it. Also days where it is cold, but not snowy or icy is not that fun either. If we get snow, than the cold weather that comes along with it is fine. Cold weather by itself, not so much. I always get so excited when I hear we are going to get snow, but I am usually disappointed when it is only 1 or 2 inches, and it is not enough to get us a snow day off from school, or enough to make snowballs. The days where we get heavy snow (which is not that often), are the best.

- I do not think that there is anyone who is currently affected by the snow in the Midwest, and I am definitely glad for that. Personally, I am usually affected by the snow. I take public transportation to dance, so that is sometimes closed. I think that when I take a bus, I am definitely affected because the buses are not running when it snows. Also, dance usually closes when there is lots of snow, so I would have a whole clear afternoon. - I do enjoy winter weather. I think that it is so much fun to go sledding and also to make snow people. I love playing in the snow, and I love having hot chocolate in the cold weather. The thing that I dislike about the snow is that sometimes it doesn't stick, or if it does stick it is the powdery type of snow which is not good for packing together to make snowmen. I like to spend my cold days at home drinking hot cocoa, watching movies. Also, I love to go sledding, like I said before. I think that the snow is so much fun. - In Philadelphia, we get snow during the winter, and there is usually at least one big snowstorm every year. I love having snow in Philadelphia because it means that I get to go sledding and do all of the things that I love. I think that in the places where there is basically only one season, and it is always hot, it would not be as fun because there would only be one thing to experience in a year. In Philadelphia, everyone who lives here experiences all different seasons, so wherever we go we know what to expect.
Molly Hatfield (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
Me and people I know are affected by this cold weather. It's very cold here, but not as cold as it is in some places, like Chicago. My little brother has a friend who moved to Chicago over the summer. We haven't talked to them recently, but whenever I hear about the freezing weather there I think of them. I do enjoy winter weather at first. I enjoy it at the beginning when everyone's still used to the warmish weather. I also enjoy it on snow days, and when there's that fresh layer of snow on the ground, and everything just looks so clean and fresh. I think my favorite part of the season is my birthday and Christmas. I also love the snow days. I dislike how cold it can get, and all the layers I have to wear, because sometimes I just want to go outside in shorts and a t-shirt and still be warm. I like to spend cold and snowy days mostly inside cozy under blankets on the couch, but I do like to go outside for a little bit, just to get the complete snowy day experience.
Natalia Bieszczad (Masterman, Philadelphia)
Personally, I do not like cold weather. I think it is inconvenient, troublesome, annoying, and can feel like needles piercing at your skin. I don’t mind when it is a few degrees lower than normal temperatures but I don’t think I would be able to stand a polar vortex. It is fun when we have off from school because of snow and blizzards but pretty white snow can also come with many dangers and inconveniences. Snow makes the roads dangerous for drivers and getting anywhere becomes an issue, stores are full of people because everyone is afraid of being stuck at home because of the weather, and wearing all those layers always feels like you are locked up in a box. When cold weather does come, however, I try to enjoy it as much as I can. I would be lying if I said I never got excited over snow. When there are colder days and I don’t have school, I like to sleep in, watch movies and appreciate how peaceful it is. I am very glad that here in Philadelphia we don’t get such cold weather as Kaukauna, Wisconsin is experiencing. Although it can get pretty cold, so far this year we have had more days off because of the heat rather than cold. I would much rather spend my day outside in a pool on a hot summer day rather than sitting inside trying to stay warm. I hope that this year winter doesn’t last as long as it did last year and we have a longer spring instead.
Maya Kowal (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
Where I live, cold weather barely affects my area. I do not take public transportation, so my schedule is never ruined from the snow or hail. I do not really know anyone that is severely affected by winter weather, because most of my family lives on the East coast of the U.S. I really enjoy winter weather, because usually we are off from school and I can sleep in. I love waking up to the sight of a winter wonderland outside of my window. The only thing that I don't like about winter is how it can easily backfire on you. You are always thinking you are going to have snow the next day and then when it comes around its 50 degrees outside. I would like to blame that on the meteorologists, because (1) they gave me false information and (2) made me think I was having a snow day when I wasn't which is one of the worst feelings. Also during winter, everyone is sick. I already had pneumonia and two colds in the span of a month. And trust me, it's not fun when you have to perform five shows, with a 101-degree fever, with pneumonia, with a lead part en pointe, without a backup. Usually, when it is a snow day, I love to take my time in the morning and sleep in. I love the feeling of waking up and seeing a winter wonderland outside of my window. Once I wake up, I quickly get ready to go outside- you never know when it's going to melt. Once I finish playing in the snow, I come inside for a nice cup of hot chocolate before my nose freezes off. I take it easy after, just enjoying the day.

In my opinion, I feel that cold and hot weather are both nice at different times but I normally I would prefer to be in cold weather. Only because when I’m in really hot weather I feel like I’m suffocating, and I also have to sleep in a cold room or I won’t sleep at all. I feel that I and all the people around me do get affected the different types of weather. For example, when it is snowing and there is a lot of snow schools are not open. When this happens parents that work have to find somewhere for their kids to go, or they can’t go to work. I also think that is why most kids like the winter because depending on how much it snows they don’t have to go to school, but that’s not why I like winter. I like winter because it feels nice outside, and I like snow. I like the way it makes Philadelphia look, and like I said I like that it’s cold. Also, another thing is that my birthday and Christmas are both in winter. Meaning that when winter comes around I get to celebrate more things with my family. The only thing I dislike about winter is the fact that when I wake up in the morning I am freezing. And then because I’m cold in the morning I don’t want to get out of bed and I go right back to sleep. The days that it does snow and there is no school I normally stay home and watch movies. I also catch up on any work that I have to do. But anyway, I’m happy we get cold weather here in Philadelphia because I don’t really like the heat as much as I like the cold.
Ereena Lalu (J.R. Masterman School,Philadelphia)
I don't know anybody that is affected by the snowstorms right now, but my mom would have to sleep in at work if there is ever a blizzard (that was the case 2-3 years ago). My brother and I stayed at my aunt's house because my dad didn't know if he was also going to have to stay at work or not. He came home and spent 3 "lonely" days without us. I enjoy cold weather very much for 2 reasons: a) because it makes it a 'stay inside' day for me, and b) there is a 50% chance that there is snow, and I love snow. The whole season screams "stay inside where it's nice and comfy" to me. The only exception is that if you are going to a sleepover or going to a vacation spot. My brother and I can go play in the snow, I can drink hot chocolate and make some ramen noodles. I don't like that the roads are slippery because there is a higher chance of accidents, and I may occasionally hate that I have to be cooped up at home. I spend my snow days usually by sleeping in, watching movies, basically as a chill, relaxed day. These are the reasons as to why I love cold days so much.
Eleena John (Masterman, Philly, PA)
"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" is the song that always pops in my head when I think about snow. Since I live in Philadelphia we do not get hit with horrible snowstorms like other states, but sometimes we do get terrible storms. I really do love the winter weather because watching the fluffy white snowfall makes me excited because we are off from school, I get to spend time with my family. After the snowstorm is over, my sister and I go play in the snow and make a snowman. I dislike the part that the next day when we go to school we are not allowed to have recess because the ground outside is icy. I really like to spend my snowy days watching movies and eating hot food like soup and macaroni and cheese. I also love making hot cocoa with marshmallows. Some of my relatives live in Chicago and I am very scared for them. One of my cousins flew in to Philadelphia a week ago hearing about the huge winter storm. The rest of my family stuck there told me they cannot even open the door to shovel the snow outside or to play in the snow. I feel terrible for them to be locked up in the house. My cousins also told me that their teacher is posting homework on Google Classroom because the kids are missing a lot of days of school. I definitely do not think they will get out of the house anytime soon because the snow is about a good 5 inches and most of it is solid ice. I feel bad for the people suffering from the snowstorm and I wish I could bring half of the storm to Pennslyvania.

Cold weather sucks. When waiting for the bus, your lovely friend named hypothermia comes up to you and traps you in what feels like forever. You literally have to wait like 10 minutes for the bus to come in freezing temperatures. Cold weather is fun, when there's a good amount and when it's not -50 degrees. However, I don't play in the snow. When I'm in winter, snow generally means holiday season. With holiday season comes cool events like in Overwatch or TF2, with custom items, which make them much cooler (no pun intended). This means no matter the weather, I'm probably grinding video games, not the snow. This makes everything good about the snow obsolete, and then you realize there's freezing temperatures to screw you over.
Jonnah Berger (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, P.A. )
I am not personally affected by the polar vortex that is currently happening. I am affected by cold weather and snow in general though. The snow makes it difficult to travel and get to school. When it snows, everyone also puts salt on the sidewalks and roads which is bad for my dog and it gets really messy and annoying. Also when it is cold and windy it is hard for me because I do not have much body fat and don't like cold weather so it is hard for me to stay warm. I really dislike winter weather, I would much rather it be 75 degrees and sunny then 10 degrees and snowing. I'd rather be swimming in a pool then standing next to a space heater with 3 sweatshirts and pairs of pants on. I don't like the winter because everything seems so gloomy, all the trees are hibernating, it gets dark at 4:30 PM, there are no birds and basically any wildlife which is a little sad. I spend cold and snowy days in bed or by a heater. I also stay inside the day and cuddle up on a couch with a book or watch a movie.
Jack Dunphy (Philly, Masterman)
I have much sympathy for the residents of places like Iowa and Minnesota which are all in the midwest. The reason for this because I could never experience weather this cold or even close. I do not enjoy winter at all because I despise snow and sleet. The reason for this is because when it snows or ices up from cold weather, it makes my bus ride which is 30 minutes to hours longer. Earlier this year it started to snow a good deal while I was in school and when we were dismissed it was freezing with bad wind gusts. That bus ride had taken me 4 hours and it was also detoured so I was forced to walk for another 30-45 minutes! The only good thing is that we get off from school from inclement weather occasionally and I usually just spend those days cramped inside. I live in Philadelphia and our weather is normal so during the winter we do not get hit too hard, but it still can snow a good deal and that's not great. If I had the opportunity to change the weather of Philadelphia so some place like Florida I would do that in a heartbeat.
Reza Chity-Guevara (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
The cold weather does affect me and people I know because it causes traffic issues and hinders my ability to get home as the snow would slow down the buses and be hard to walk in. Also, people I know have places to be so their plans will also be hindered if there is major snowing. I enjoy winter weather because it allows me to build snowmen and to go sledding. Also, it is fun to make snow buildings. I do not like it being very cold because then I am cold, and I do not like when it snows and the snow does not stick together. I usually spend my cold or snowy days inside doing work for school or when I am not busy reading and playing games.
Benga Oni (JR Masterman, Philadelphia PA)
Honestly for me weather is weather. It comes and goes, people only really think about it when it's affecting themselves in their daily life. Everyone is guilty of this at some point, whether you like it or not. I use public transportation and things like snow and rain really affect me because of how freezing it is all the time. 80 degree- weather is amazing for me, since I don't have to wear a giant jacket just to go to school and have to carry it home when it isn't cold anymore. For me, winter is only amazing when we're off school. People are inside, nice and warm, and for most of the time it's pretty quiet which is nice. When it's hot, people make a lot more noise outside since the weather is just about right. Right here in Philadelphia, we're getting pretty cold weather, around 30-40 degrees most of the time, sometimes getting a bit lower going into the 20s. People say that we're lucky that we aren't getting 5 degree weather or whatever weather they're experiencing. I always reply by saying that the colder it is, the more chances they have of getting snow, and snow is amazing. To end this before I hit the character limit, winter weather just amazes me sometimes, even though I take public transportation and it hurts being cold.
Kenneth R. (Masterman School, Philadelphia)
I can't believe that in some places temperatures are going as low as 50 below 0. When I seen the forecast for Philadelphia I thought 6 degrees was bad. That seems like nothing compared to negative 50.I'm not the biggest fan of colder weather. Even though winter isn't my favorite season it isn’t that bad.You need to stay inside a lot more than any other season, getting places is a lot harder because of snow/ice and it gets darker so much earlier than the rest of the year. Even though the climate isn't the best in the winter there are some great things to do. One of the highlights of the school year for me is winter break. It's usually two weeks long that we don't have school. This year's break was even better because I didn't have any homework. My family also has a tradition of going to the Macy's light show down in center city Philadelphia. It's a spectacular showing of perfectly curated multi colored lights. Even though Philadelphia has a pretty moderate climate I wish we had a bit warmer winters.
Justin Time Liu ( Masterman; in Philly)
I kinda enjoy winter weather since if it snows a lot there will be no school. And going sledding and snowball fighting is really fun, not to mention that there are no mosquitos to pester you like in the summer. The thing I hate about the winter is that it is can be unpredictable in temperature, like this year, it is is the 40's and there's barely been any snow, or so cold that you get frostbite. I live in Philly so the seasons are moderately hot, and cold. I 've heard that the Chicago's gonna feel colder than it is in Antarctica. Which makes me wonder how it feels like to live in a minus 50-degree climate. You'd probably freeze your nose off!! To be honest, I have my fear of the cold because my mother told me a story of how my grand aunt froze her ears off in winter in a province in China. But I am looking forward to the Polar Vortex's influence on our region. Since the weathermen said that it might snow pretty badly.
Abdoul Diallo (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I don't necessarily like cold/winter weather, but I also don't mind a snowy day where I could play in the snow and when I look outside it feels out of this world. I don't like being cold because it makes me grumpy really quickly but when I dress for the occasion it's not that bad. I normally just think about the people who never got to experience snow, and don't even know what it feels like! Normally on snow days I either sit in and watch movies while drinking hot chocolate or I go outside to play with my brothers. I don't know anyone who live in the area that is getting these frigid temperatures, but I could imagine how much trouble they are going through just to finish their daily activities. On the other hand, some of them may be happy they get to spend time in the house without going to school. I just hope that the blizzard stops because I would imagine that many people are not working right now because of this which could lead to them getting paid a fraction of what they earned before that.
Anya Finlay (Masterman- Philadelphia, PA)
I live in Philadelphia so although the next few days will be cold with a possibility of a little snow and ice we are not getting hit very hard by the polar vortex. I like winter but, like most things it has its ups and downs. I always enjoy being able to wear sweatshirts and sweatpants and wrap myself in a blanket while watching movies and reading books. I also really like watching snow fall, and taking hikes through the woods. Not only is winter beautiful but it provides the opportunity for many fun sports such as ice skating, skiing and sledding. You can also play tons of board and card games, make delicious food and of course, drink lots of hot chocolate. While all of these things make winter very fun, this season also has a not so exciting side to it. While snow is very fun I often get restless when I am stuck in my house. I take public transportation to get home from school and when there is bad weather the systems are usually delayed or canceled, making the trip much longer and harder. Although it doesn’t affect Philly as badly as many places, I always worry about people without shelter during snow storms and the dangers they are in. The cold temperatures are often dangerous to people outside as well as the ice and snow which can cause many accidents. Overall I think that the winter is a very beautiful and fun season and as long as everybody drives safely, it is totally worth having.
Maeve McNichol (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I don't know anyone personally who has been affected by this frigid weather but I can say that I would not want to be in it myself. I'm not a big winter weather fan to begin with so these types of temperatures are my nightmare. It a bit surprising to see these types of forecasts in Wisconsin and Chicago. Occasionally, when it isn't too cold, I enjoy winter weather. This polar vortex is astounding. When you look at the current temperatures in places like Antarctica, you just think about how lucky you are not to live there. The worst part about winter weather is the ice. When it forms on roads and sidewalks, it makes you slip and fall. Snow is alright as long as there's enough of it. If there isn't a huge amount, I think it's a waste. My friends are always talking about how dangerous the ice on streets can be. So many accidents happen because of that ice. Overall, I think that snowy/icy weather is extremely dangerous.
Jonah Levi (Masterman, Philadelphia PA)
Though none of my family members are affected in a bad way, I, like many of my family members, love the snow. I love the winter because there is never a point in time where you don't have something to do. Though sometimes it does get to cold, I love snowboarding, snowball fights or just playing in the snow with my family. Take it from a person who was born in the summer who tells you that he loves winter much more than summer. I could not imagine living somewhere warm and I love the snow.
Azalea Derrickson (Masterman School,Philly)
I'm so scared. I'm not scared of the cold weather when it normal, but when its out of control and wack like so, that's when it gets a bit scary. Especially because I have a brother in Chicago (in college) and I feel that he's not that prepared for this but whatever. I kinda wish that this was happening to Philadelphia because then we would get school of for a hot minute. And I could stay in bed all day, make a lot of hot chocolate, and watch a lot of movies, I could also not go to school on my birthday (January 31st, Thursday) and spend the day with my family. But I actually like winter weather a lot because on the the best feelings is being cold and then warming up again. I am not happy about because if its not cold, then you can’t wear pants, and personally my legs are really ugly and I don’t like showing them so you kinda have to have Cold weather.
Zephyr Spatz (Philadelphia, @Masterman)
When I first started hearing about this polar vortex in the Midwest, I immediately thought of my uncle, who lives in Chicago. It gets cold out there but...50 below? That's insane. Personally, I hate winter weather. There's nothing enjoyable about the cold. I take public transportation everywhere, and cold weather always leads to delays and other inconveniences. I try to not let weather affect what I want or have to do on a daily basis, though. I spend my days in cold weather about the same as I do any other day. If Philly was affected by the polar vortex as directly as the Midwest is, everything would slow down and become harder than usual, but we'd just have to deal with it. I'm just glad we don't have to deal with it.
Laila (Masterman, Philadelphia )
I live in Philadelphia, where the high today was 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and I thought that was cold. It must truly suck to be in the Midwest right now during the polar vortex. We have a family friend who lives in Indiana and she keeps posting pictures of the deep snow, and they didn't get even close to the worst of it compared to other states. I don’t mind the cold so much during mid-winter because you are somewhat used to the weather by then, but at the beginning of winter, it can be hard. I take public transportation, and when it snows everything slows down. Buses have been over two and a half hours late before and than you wait two more hours to get home because of traffic. Other than being soaked and miserable waiting for the bus, winter is a good season (mainly because of winter break). I enjoy visiting my family and going skiing and ice skating. Another thing I like about winter is when you have a snow day. I don’t even care if we have to make it up during spring break, because spring break is already lame. The Philadelphia School District lets us have only two days and a weekend for spring break.
Sarayah W (Masterman, Philadelphia)
For me, the cold season are the best season because you can layer as much as you want since it is cold and you can't do that when it is hot outside like in the summertime. In the winter the freezing cold temperatures automatically stops people from wanting to go outside, so that allows me to keep warm in my bed, drinking hot chocolate. In Pennsylvania, we don't really have harsh winters like in the northern state, but I’m not upset about it because although I do like the cold, I don’t want it to be -14 degrees or have tons and tons of snow each week.
Amalia T. (Mastermind, Philadelphia)
I will not be heavily affected by this Polar Vortex in the Midwest, but we may get snow or ice. My cousins and aunt and uncle in Toronto may also be affected, but, since they are closer to the Midwest, U.S.A, they will probably be affected more. I usually enjoy winter weather and I am okay with the cold, but temperatures of -50ºC are unbearable, especially with all the time it takes to dress up warm enough to go outside safely. I like deep snow because it is hard to recognize what is what in some places that are less familiar to you. This might seem more confusing than fun, but it is really fun to have to reorient yourself. I do not really mind whether we get cold weather or not because nothing much really happens if we do get some cold weather besides a possible Snow Day and nothing much really changes if we do not get the cold weather.
Olivia Garvin (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia,PA)
Many people dislike some types of weathers because of allergies or just that they don't like the cold, but for me I like any kind of weather. Weather does not really affect me in any way. In my opinion, yes I do enjoy cold weather, I like when it snows especially because we get off from school and get to go sledding. I also like coming home from sledding and getting warm, then go to make hot chocolate, and then after that go to watch some movies. There is no one I know where there is frigid temperatures and if there was, I would feel bad because it is probably freezing there. Weather is just weather to me, it never has really affected me and it doesn't bother me at all. Mostly in the summer or spring people get allergies which makes them hate it, but in the end the weather is actually nice, it is just your allergies that are ruining it for you. Once you get used to it, some people will like it, some will hate it, but in the end it is just weather and that's my opinion.
Ona Stocovaz (J.R Masterman)
Cold weather affects me and many of the people I know. It affects me because when in snows or ice forms on roads or sidewalks, my schedule is messed up. I use public transportation to travel places and when it snows, the buses usually close and stop running and that makes everything in my life much more hectic. This also happens to my sister and many of my friends as well. I enjoy winter weather because it gives you a chance to be outside and make things in your back yard that you would not be able to do in the other seasons. I usually spend snowy days inside drinking hot cocoa by a fire and playing a board game or putting together a puzzle. During this time, I will go in and outside of our house and do a variety of things from shoveling the walkway to sitting in the snow until in soaks through my pants. I am glad that no one I know or care about lives in the Midwest so they are not going to get hit by polar vortex, but I still feel for the people who have to live in these conditions. By these conditions, I mean not being able to go outside because its 50 degrees below zero and you would get frostbite in a matter of minutes. I enjoy the activities you can achieve during snowy weather, but also think that snowy weather can be hurtful and dangerous in many ways.
Kate Chin (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
old weather and hot weather are the same for me. Sometimes they are beautiful and fun to be in, but it can slap you in the face multiple times. I would say that I do enjoy winter weather. However, I would not prefer winter over summer and vice versa. I tend to lean more to the middle seasons, like spring and fall where the weather is perfectly in the middle. I like winter weather because there's something about the cold that's so crisp. Something that's so refreshing and pure. The cold is dangerous and so welcoming at the same time. Some things that I do not like about the season is the excessive holiday songs that are played even before winter starts. When winter starts, everyone is tired of these songs. I also don't like that almost everyone is sick and I myself hate being in too many layers. I don’t like being restricted, especially with clothing. It feels like a moving prison. I like spending snowy, peaceful days but completely ruining the peace. I love to drop snow on my family members when they enter my house, and make snowmen that will get drop kicked in less than 5 minutes after making it. Basically, winter is a peaceful time that isn't peaceful at my house. Snow is beautiful, but some break the beautifulness of it and turn it into something more exciting and enjoyable.
Ami S (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I remember reading about a particularly bad storm in a region of Minnesota that happened in 1888. In that place in that time period it could get as cold as -50 degrees Fahrenheit. It was so cold in that region that children would wear short sleeves and shorts in -20 degrees Fahrenheit weather, since they considered that temperature warm. When I read it I was amazed, and thought that something like that probably won’t ever happen again thanks to Global Warming. Yet I stand corrected, because the temperatures in the Midwest will be so cold that it will momentarily be colder than Antarctica there. I really like cold weather. I get to stay inside, see the snow falling, and think about all the things I could do with it. I have snowball fights with my friends, which are really fun since I’m always able to dodge incoming snowballs and have good aim. Building snowmen is really fun. Sometimes snow can even get me out of school. I just think that snow is neat. While I wouldn’t want be in the Midwest, I wonder what the Polar Vortex is like. How cold does 50 degrees Fahrenheit feel? How much snow is too much snow? I’ll probably never know though. While we do get snow where I live from time to time, we never get that much, and it’s never below 10 degrees.
Brian E. (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Thankfully, nobody I know lives near the Midwest, so none of my relatives are affected by the upcoming snowstorms. I really enjoy Winter weather. My brother and I like to go outside and have snowball fights and build snowmen. That’s why global warming is a real bummer. I like to spend my snowy days inside drinking hot chocolate- only going outside when the snow temporarily stops. I really wish that we could get more snow days in Philly though, because snow stops school and snow gets kids active and moving. The only thing I don’t like about the cold season is the slush. It’s just… It’s disgusting. If I get it in the car, then….. :( SLUSH IS A MESS.
Sam Doyle (Philly Philly)
I really like winter, but to an extent. I can deal with it when you have to put on another layer or jacket, that is fine. However, once it gets to the point were it is below freezing 24/7, that is where a draw the line. When I have to stay inside because it is too cold, then I am done with winter. There are some upsides that make me like winter. One upside is the snow that comes with the storms. I love playing with snow with friends, snowball fights, and sledding. Also, snow does a very good job of causing traffic and closing schools, letting us have a nice break from school. Another thing a like about winter is being able to bundle up. In summer when it gets hot, you can take off some extra layers to keep cool, but you can only to that to a point. In winter, you can add layers of clothing, blankets, and more. During snow days I like to hang out inside, go sledding, throw snowballs, and hang out with friends. Winter is the best.

Winter is one of my favorite seasons, the snow and the icy cold feeling is something I love and have always enjoyed during the season. Though I love the winter, my love does come to an extent. When giant snowstorms hit I love them because it is a potential way I can stay home from school but sometimes the snow is not deep enough for a day off and I have to go to school. On those days I feel like the universe is against me since I live on a hill and whatever snow the city gets get more because of the altitude. That means that have to get up at 5 am and leave the house at 6 in order to get to the train in time. Though on the bright side of winter, I get to enjoy so many different holidays and seasonal things that go on. For example, around Christmas Philadelphia has Christmas village that sets up in Center City. It offers vendors a place to set up and sell different seasonal things like hats and socks. Another thing winter has to offer is the change in lattes at Starbucks according to the season. They provide so many different winter flavors that distract you from the cold so you can embrace the season.

I have a love-hate relationship with winter. On one hand I love the powdery snow and all of the parks looking like a winter wonderland. The cold 20°F weather is nice with lots of layers. It’s also a great excuse to stay home all day and do nothing. On the other hand, when it gets too sold, that when the problems start. You have to wear so many layers that when you put them on inside, you have to throw up. When the snow freezes together to make rocks and you can’t throw it at other people without hurting them. When it becomes like 40°F one day for some reason and all the snow melts. The it is 10°F the next and all of the water becomes ice and it sucks.

- I am not affected by snow or frigid temperature. But, my cousin who is a Freshman at Michigan will be affected. They are suppose to have temperatures well below 32 degrees. - I like the winter weather but dislike winter due to the fact it's the season I get sick the most. Due to the cold air, bacteria is attracted to households due to the heating. But, the things I do like about winter is the snow and going sledding. Also, throwing snow balls at my friends and family is fun too. - I am sort of happy that I am not affected because I would want to be able to go outside and not have a chance of getting frostbite in a few minutes. But, the down side is, if I had this snow storm, school would be canceled and I would get a few days to relax.

Where I live the weather does not get to cold. It gets cold enough were you can see your breathe but never cold enough were it snows. It has snowed one time I think so far and the snow wasn't even an inch high. I am a winter person for mainly the snow, I love being able to go outside and build snowmen. My favorite part of winter is the snow and sledding which I got to do last year but don't think I will this year. Sometimes I like the cold but other times I just wish for it to be warm and have no need for two layers. I wish we had more cold weather and especially more snow. The worst thing about winter for me is when you wish you could just go outside and not worry about how many layers you need to wear. I wish global warming would just go away for a little bit so i can go sledding.

First of all, I must say that I've been in -20 without windchill. And second, I'm really hoping this doesn't affect my trip to Chicago next week. I like being warm, but I like the cold because it brings snow which closes school (YES!), and we can have fun in the snow. I wish this area got more snow, but I do like being warm.

I have a friend from Michigan who told me about the fridged cold in the midwest. apparently where he is lake Michigan is frozen which is really cool. I enjoy cold weather and snow and I much prefer it to summer heat. I don't exactly want to experience the polar vortex but I am incredibly curious about what it's like there. I live in Philly and so far we've gotten more time off this school year for the extreme heat then we have for snow. We do usually get about a week worth of snow days which is decent. my school has two half days this week (that are unrelated to the weather) and when we get out it's going to be 9 or so degrees.

Winter weather is great, a time to sleep in and to not worry about the outside world. The snowstorms do have great potential to deal massive amounts of damage however, and that will cause disastrous results. What I like about winter weather is for the time to stay home, and be in a warm environment where you can do whatever you want. What I don't like, is that it can drag on for a long time and potentially shutdown many areas. I get cold weather a lot where I live and I am fine with it, unless it affects with my daily life.

This article really does concern me because he snow and the cold can be very treacherous at times and everyone should stay in. It is even more scar for me because in the article it mentions it will be below 50 degrees and I have many of my family members there and some of them are old so this does really scare me. I know I will definitely keep my thoughts with them and make sure to check in with them. Sometimes I do really enjoy the snow because I like making snowballs and snowmen;especially because of snow days. To conclude, this will be very scary for me and my family and I just can't wait till it's over but for now I have to stay in.

I like cold temperatures in moderation. I do prefer it over warmer seasons. But I would not particularly enjoy dealing with a polar vortex. I enjoy winter weather, I think seeing a fluffy, white blanket of snow is nice and calming. It feels cleansing. I don't enjoy the mixture of rain and snow, the large patches of ice, or intensive snowstorms. But for those days, when those do occur, I like to stay inside and watch anime while drinking a hot drink sitting on my bed piled in a few blankets and a couple pillows. Or I just sit and laze around reading for a while before getting bored and playing music or watching multiple different YouTube videos without paying attention. No one I know directly is impacted by cold or frigid temperatures. But I do fell empathy for those who do live in the areas with a polar vortex or those who just know someone there. I do get some cold weather where I live but due to some global warming the weather during the seasons is slightly irregular but we do get some snow not mountains of it but enough that some of the snow does still remain white even after a day.

I'm not affected by the snow and temperatures from where I live, and I'm very upset about it. I was expecting a lot of snow this winter, but there was barely any from where I live! The coldest it's been was about 20 degrees fahrenheit; there weren't any snow days at all. I love the winter. I love the cold weather and how it feels against my skin. I love watching the snow fall and the feeling of not going to school when there is too much snow. I absolutely hate hot weather. I'll start sweating even if it's only fifty degrees fahrenheit. For me, the cold weather feels refreshing. I usually spend cold days indoors. I don't like the heater, though. It ruins the vibe of the weather. Also, it's really rare to be humid in the winter, and I hate humid weather. I hate how no matter what you do, you can never not feel sticky because everything around you IS sticky. In my opinion, the cold weather has a thin and happy feeling. It will kill bacteria (because bacteria die in cold temperatures) making you feel less sick, unless you already are sick. I can't imagine living in a place that is predominately hot. I don't think I can survive there.
