Being a prodigy for Hillary Clinton alone sort of gives Kirsten Gillibrand my vote, plus I do like a lot of the things that she does support.

"as a young mom, I’m going to fight for other people’s kids as hard as I would fight for my own" Hey, can I say I'm young at 58? :) This song is not quite my view, as she never really convinced me that she wouldn't run in 2020, so IMHO any reliance was not justified. But imagining that one of her rumored Presidential hopefuls might be reached for comment at - where else? - the Y in Brooklyn: Tune fo “Y-M-C-A” “Young Mom,” It seems that’s what she says She says “Young Mom” In her bid to be Prez Not as young as Ms. O-ca-sio-Cor-tez And still young enough, but let’s see - “Young Mom,” As she enters the race. She said “Young Mom” As she stated her case But hey - Young Mom - Did you lie to my face When you said you’d serve your whole term. (I guess it’s true sometimes - ) - (chorus) Lying’s OK! When it’s just politics - Lying’s OK! Hey! Young Mom, Young Mom, when you gave us that vow Did you really not know you'd run now?

I've really enjoyed the mix of stories the last few days. Thank you.

Thanks for the articles on Gillibrand. Like many other voters, I'm never going to forget her role in Al Franken's departure from the Senate. She radically changes her positions for political expediency. She doesn't keep basic campaign promises (She said she'd serve her full Senate term.). Even her description of herself as a "young mom" (she's 52) seems calculated to frame herself more appealingly to young voters and it plays on ageism. One thing about youth: when she started, she spoke like a little girl. Her presentation skills have improved, but she's still not a compelling speaker. There are many other candidates with more potential.

I never read the book but did see the movie, and I believe the building where Helene Hanff lived on East 72nd Street was renamed “Charing Cross” in her and its honor. Always think of it as I pass by.

I remember reading it in Readers Digest. I was pretty much still a kid, but I found it lovely.

@ktg, I mentioned this earlier elsewhere, but one of our neighbors has almost the same name - This reminded me of our wonderful neighbor, actress Helen Hanft, who would have been 85 this April. This was her obit from 2013 https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/06/theater/helen-hanft-master-of-camp-way-off-broadway-dies-at-79.html She was sometimes called the Helen Hayes or Ethel Merman of off-off-Broadway. She joked that everyone comes to fill the house when she has comps, which was great for the actors feeding off the reaction but not great for the investors - the people who came on comps tended to recommend it to people who couldn't afford to pay but needed comps too. :) Thanks for reminding me by the similar name!!! When I was young, 1974 or so, I remember the ads and quotes for her in "Why Hanna's Skirt Won't Stay Down," and thinking it must be such an adult show with that title. (But the title was actually referring to air vents, in a way sort of like the air from subway grates.)

Neither Gillibrand nor Harris can count on this liberal California woman's vote after they destroyed Am Franken's career over a sophomoric photo of the then-comedian pretending to fondle a colleagues breasts. That childish gag warranted and received an apology from Franken. And it had nothing in common with the rape, assault, and harassment allegations that have been leveled at other powerful men. I left both senators that message and also a message for Franken voicing my support. There is no place for the politics of destruction in the Democratic Party. There are many fine candidates to choose from without stooping to Gillibrand or Harris. My early favorites are Booker, Duckworth, and Biden.

Al Franken remembers! Gillibrand attacked thee BEST democratic senator over complete nonsense. She will never get my vote for anything. Also Gillibrand owes her entire political career to the Clintons. Bill Clinton's affair was resolved in the 1990s - it's OVER. But Gillibrand wants to keep talking about it. Gillibrand drop out! #HillaryClinton2020 #AlFrankenToo

@PR While this is not a political column, nothing is apolitical these days. Ms. Gillibrand is exhibiting all the signs of a recent convert, in particular, vigorously attacking those things which she previously defended (kind of like a reformed smoker). Her previous defense of the tobacco companies, the NRA, and her promise to complete her term are bad enough, but her attack on Al Franken can not be forgiven. He was decent, honest, and was the best defense against the current administration. Her complete ignoring of his merits and his wish to stand for a Senate investigation were inexcusable. No way should she be the nominee. The fact that he resigned rather than drag the Democrats through the potential fight just shows what kind of mensch he is.

@PR In response to all the people who say that Franken was a big boy and it's unfair to blame Gillibrand, first, that photo was not evidence of sexual assault, but rather of a stupid gag, for which he apologized. Second, there has been a strong suggestion that Franken was set up in regard to the other accusations. Third, Franken, unlike Brett Kavanaugh, was willing to participate in an investigation and a public hearing. If those had yielded credible evidence, I'd have wanted to see him go, too. But there was a strong feeling that he was railroaded and Gillibrand was the engineer at the front of the train, tooting the horn. It seemed like Franken was sacrificing himself to avoid being a distraction for the Democrats. The Bill Clinton situation, while distasteful and showing incredibly poor judgment on his part, was not harassment. Lewinsky was 22 years old and pursued him. That Gillibrand would try to use that is very telling of her lack of nuance, opportunism, and disloyalty.

I much prefer Metropolitan Diary in this reduced format. It seems to have evolved from interesting tales to depressing or touristy anecdotes in recent years (...she died six months later, or ...it turned out to be my very first plain bagel!!, or ...he pushed my shopping cart all the way to Sloan Kettering and refused my dollar tip...) But as for Senator G, she promised six years, then immediately reneged on that promise. Voters should decide accordingly.

So it's another death knell for a SoHo, or for what's left of it... I remember a time when there were numerous macrobiotic restaurants to be found. And oddly enough, they were the forerunners of all the faux-exotic healthy menus exploding around the city today. Hail and Farewell!

PRESIDENTIAL DTs When did the nation succumb To a serious case of DTs? And when did that somehow morph Into obstructive cognitive disease?

Hmmmmm. You might want to move this headline a bit deeper into the paper. Gillibrand threw a fellow Democrat under the bus at a time when we needed every voice in the Senate, not for the righteousness but for the attention she'd get. It worked, but was not the kind of attention she wanted. I don't know one Democrat who isn't sick of her already. And if I can believe the NYT, she missed the vote on moving ahead to maintain sanctions on a Russian oligarch just so she could make her campaign announcement. Wrong choice. Most recently she promised New Yorkers that she'd serve her full six year term, which isn't possible if under the snowball-chance-in-hell rule she should become president. Let's see how slick she becomes at explaining away that promise to the people who have her a (very noisy) platform from which to launch. She's a terrible choice for Democratic nominee. We should all help her to keep her promise to serve her full Senate term.

Your newsletter is perfect, each day it has just the right amount of curious trivia mixed with details about current events. Today I was reminded why I don’t trust Gillibrand. She helped Philip Morris squelch the truth about tobacco. Being a “ low level “ member of the legal team just doesn’t work any more as an excuse. Thank you!!

Even though, sadly, I no longer live in the city, l Iove reading the Diaries. This latest was one of my favs. Touching story. Made me think ok my mom. Thank you.
