Folks, Desmond's family is facing serious economic difficulties as he was the sole breadwinner. Please consider contributing to this fund. Thanks Santiago https://www.gofundme.com/desmond-boylan-fund

What a life!

Rest In Peace. Picture is a great testimony for what happened there at the time. It is no surprise that a photographer is a unsung hero/heroine. Thank you, Desmond Boylan.

Great articles and pics! But I really hated it when mankind wasted all those foods/vegetables when billions of people go to bed hungry.

Wire service photographers are indeed very much the unsung herores of photojournalism, especially in this time of decline for magazines and newspapers. Even the wire services have not been immune to current economic reality. But their dedicated photographers carry on professionally nevertheless. The nature of their role demands they be very good at shooting a lot of different things, and many of them are not just good but great. Desmond Boylan was one of those great ones. Too young to have left the scene. RIP, Desmond, and thank you, Santiago, for this affectionate tribute.

Great article, thank you NYT for having it. My deepest condolences to the Boylan family and friends. So many in the news business are extraordinary and work behind the scenes endangering themselves to bring us images of history. Beautiful photos.

It takes an artist’s eye and enormous journalistic commitment to seek out and record such powerful and poignant images. Thank you Desmond for bearing witness so we can try to understand the world a little better.

A wonderful article. Thank you.

I love the first photo and the caption. Dancing in the rain. We could use more of that these days. I hope the little boy does that for the rest of his life.

Thank you for the story of the life of a hugely talented man. Each photograph is an essay in images, form and color. So sad that he passed away...

A lovely tribute

Great article, thanks.

I am deeply grateful to Santiago for this detailed, fitting, and affectionate remembrance. My own experience with Des was alas shorter and later; I recently spent a week with him in Havana; but I must strongly second the descriptors -- generous, gentle, hard-working, and deeply skilled at and committed to 'shining light on the dark places.' He was a lovely man and I shall miss him.

Like Desmond Boylan, Santiago Lyon is also a great photographer as well as photo executive now with Adobe. Lyon is right, these wire photographers, brave men and women all, are the unsung heroes and heroines of journalism. They show us the real world, as real people live it. Without them and their dedicated "print" and multi-media colleagues for respected, honest news outlets, there would only be babel, blather and, especially now, fake news and outright lies. This is a fitting tribute for Boylan, who will be deeply missed as a photographer of truth as well as a fine man.

An inspiring tribute to a friend and fellow conflict photographer. I wish I could have met Mr. Boylan!
