I absolutely LOVE this show! I find myself doing Alexis and David’s hand gestures and facial expressions. I’ve rewatched each season over and over and it helped me get through the death of my Mom in May.
Emily Polon (New Hampshire )
Don’t forget the hand gestures of Alexis and David!
Mer Smith (Arkansas)
@Emily Polon. I find myself doing those all the time now! :). Love David and Alexis!

If the show can't be viewed in the U.S. why bother reviewing it in a U.S. newspaper?
John Jackson (Pittsburgh, PA)
@Beaglelover its on Netflix. It can be watched anywhere there is an internet connection.
anon (central New York)
@Beaglelover -you can watch it on Netflix
Daphne (new york)
@Beaglelover You can watch it on Netflix (seasons 1-4) and the new season on PopTV.

One of the funniest shows ever. No need for canned laughter (a sure sign that something's not funny). The characters are hilarious without much effort--just watch Moira walk into a scene in one of her crazy, extremely expensive designer outfits. As the family is cast into this rundown motel, they begin to open up emotionally and grow. The writing is amazing. There isn't one "forced" minute. It's not easy to create this narrative arc and maintain the wackiness we love, but they do it. Schitt's Creek forever!
Chris (NJ)
I love Chris Elliot — LOVE — but I couldn't get through episode one. It's plasticky, forced and, worse, not funny. A dud. Why are TV critics taken with 99% of what they watch? Lyons is strictly a greenhorn next to the other Times TV scribes, not in their league.
Paul Shepard (Oakland, CA)
"Creek" has all the positive qualities the many fans here describe. So great that it's success lets us regularly see those greats O'Hara and Levy from the hilarious Christopher Guest mockumentaries. My sides ache watching the "newcomers" too, esp. the lovelorn doctor and that lumberjack hunk who are victims of Alexis's fickeleness. Bravos to all the creatives and crew! s

Now reading this, it is true that she has a peculiar way of saying "Alexis" but also her talk is peculiar and that I LOVED about her character. She goes the extra mile to look more out of this world in the show.. Catherine is just great great actress.. And the rest of the family of course are great.. Love Alexis outfit.. She is gorgeous.. I guess I will have to wait until Netflix has it :(

One of the best parts of Shitt's Creek is the scenes with Eugene Levy and Chris Elliot doing what seems like improvised riffing - you can actually feel the admiration they have for each other as comics and they play off each other like the pros they are. Fantastic stuff.

I love both stars and wanted to love this show but I could barely get through the first episode. It was pure schlock barely disguised as edgy millennial humor. I blame the writers, not the actors. It reminds me of the sub-par Canadian content I watched growing up in Toronto, before we learned how to produce decent shows. We're better than this, Canada.
Pezley (Canada)
@Barry F I felt that way too at the beginning; the Hubs loved it right off the bat. As other commenters here have said, try it again and stick with it. It really does get so much better.
Jayne Nayman (Oakland, CA)
@Barry F A fellow Oaktowner here. Love Scitts Creek! After I come home from my stressful job, I am soon laughing out loud. That's worth a lot to me. I especially love how there is NO meanness on the show. Unlike in real life.

Forty years ago, SCTV was a late-night guilty pleasure of which my mother didn't approve. Thank you, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara for sticking around long enough to deliver one of the two current sitcoms (with SuperStore) I'll allow my 11- and 7-year-olds to watch without pre-screening.
Patricia (Connecticut)
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT ALL! It's kind, brilliant, moving and funnier than anything I've seen in years. And yes, I am mad for David. Like everyone else I know.
Anbi (California)
Love this show! It goes straight to my q zone in all the right ways. Favorite bits: Moira's outfits/wigs, Alexis's party history, Johnny's eyebrows, & all of David.
BKLYNJ (Union County)
@Anbi - "I didn't know quite how to bring this up, but 'meatloaf night' was yesterday."
John (Florida)
I loved the mockumentary "Best in Show" and loved the Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy couple. To see them as a couple again in this show is a pure delight. The entire cast is entertaining and I can't wait to see season 5.

The scene where Patrick sings to David is like when Jim first kisses Pam, or the last scene in the final episode of Six Feet Under...I go back and I watch it over and over to recapture the feeling I had the first time I watched it. This is such a remarkable show, namely because it captures the beauty of ordinary interactions by contrasting them with outrageousness.
Bob (Prescott, AZ)
Thanks for this. You nailed the appeal of the show.
Connie (Canada)
I love this show - David is clever and sarcastic and Alexis is the air head with a heart of gold - they show so many kinds and flavours of love - familial, platonic, romantic, new, “old”, sexual and comfortable... I laugh start to finish and it truly is a show that can be watched again and again.
Michele K (Ottawa)
Wow - I couldn't get past Season 1. Maybe it's worth trying again.
Lisa (London)
@Michele K yes... watch it again... it is the one of the funniest things on tv... next to Workin’ Moms... (Thurs CBC)
PixieStix (Union City, NJ)
I LOVE this show, & have seen every episode...My fave character is Eugene's son...SO hilarious & sexually ambiguous...def interesting...I also find his and his sisters' gestures & expressions quite curious & comical...Kudos to the entire cast for a great sitcom!
Bonnie (Southern California)
Thi# show is clever, very funny, and smart. The cast is superb and the characters are well-developed, naive to life, and each line they say is usually a gem and hilarious. This has been my favorite show since episode 1 of the first season. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Roses are up to this season.
Susan (Oregon)
I love this show and have watched all seasons on Netflix.
Naide (Wakefield RI)
I love Candian sitcoms and Schitt's Creek is one of my favorites but I would also like to recommend Little Mosque on the Prairie. Same formula as Schitt's Creek, gentle humor, remote town, kooky characters and a developing love story. I binge on these shows when I need a respite from reality.
Jay Broni (Brooklyn)
@Naide Re Canadian sitcoms. Has anyone seen "Letterkenny"? Hilarious!
Brucski (Ohio)
It took getting through the first six episodes for me to begin to enjoy Schitt’s Creek and not get turned off by the spoiled children. Each year became better and richer in character development and arc. The introduction of Patrick helped set the stage for a sweetness and warmth that had been previously missing. I do hope with the pride that Johnny has, now that the RoseBud Motel No Vacancy sign could be lit if the ‘No’ was working, that he and Stevie will paint the motel. Perhaps then my significant other will be less grossed out by the Rose’s living condition.
MissyR (Westport, CT)
I’ve tried to like this show, as its quirky nature appeals to me, but find it mean spirited and hard to watch. The cast is great though their characters lack any redeeming qualities.
Mark (Portland, OR)
@MissyR As the article suggests, it takes a couple seasons to really find its groove and it drops its surliness. It becomes the sweetest show on TV.
Amy F (Boston)
@MissyR Keep going.... it changes so much, and it really is full of heart.
Tim (The Upper Peninsula)
@Mark Who in this world has the time to waste waiting "a couple seasons" for a fluffy tv sitcom to get better? Television is--mostly--a black hole of time-sucking drivel. Get off the couch, people. Go outside. Take a walk or a jog. Pick up a musical instrument, study a language, or read a book.
p-waydad (NJ)
I really enjoy this show and have been watching not being vs season 1. I love the banter amongst the characters and the functional dysfunction in the family. It's a comedy, but not too comedy. Not with the usual rhetoric, canned laughter or toilet humor of the everyday. The show has a sensitivity to it that helps carry it along.
connie floerchinger (Iowa)
I too loved Catharine O'Hara and Eugene Levy in SCTV as well as Dog Show! I find myself saying Alexis and David in Moira's voice. This is by far one of the best shows on TV! Chris Elliott is hilarious! I only hope they keep it going!
John (Florida)
@connie floerchinger---"Best in Show".
Robert Maykut (FL)
Love, love, love this show. We've been anxiously waiting for the new season to start. Many series start to get tired after many seasons, but this show has definitely found its groove.
alboyjr (NYC)
I have been a huge fan of Catharine O'Hara and Eugene Levy since their days with "SCTV" and it's been delightful seeing them work together again. I also love the performances by the supporting cast; how could you forget to mention Chris Elliot, aka "Roland Schitt"?? Highly recommend this, though not everyone may get the Pop channel. Very, very funny show.
Bard (Canada)
@alboyjr you can also stream it, for free, from the CBC website.
Danielle Price (Harrisonburg, VA)
@Bard You can't stream CBC television shows if you are outside Canada.
heysus (Mount Vernon)
@Bard I live just across the boarder and I am not "allowed" to stream it from CBC. Ditto with news. Hmm, wonder if it is my cable carrier....

I adore this show. Rather than rely on the 'fish-out-of-water' trope and their attempts to regain their former life, they wisely chose to let that go early on and focus on the family's attempts to become a part of their new community and make it more vibrant. It's been hilarious and lovely to watch them settle in.
