U.S. Downgraded E.U.’s Diplomatic Status (but Didn’t Say Anything)

Damaging diplomatic relationships around the world is a direct violation of several different sections of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). As Commander in Chief, any President is answerable to the UCMJ as well as to civilian law. So why hasn't the current occupant of the White House been arrested for treason under those terms?

Theresa May, please take notice. You were not a Brexiteer until the referendum passed. You’ve done your best on Brexit. The British people have the benefit now of seeing reality. Hold another referendum. Maybe right wing propaganda and ‘alternate facts’ will no longer hold sway. Do you really want to limit your country and align it with Donald Trump’s understanding of the world? Let the British people speak.

The pic of David O'Sullivan: Hand signal. Discreet, but it's there.

No wars between EU members. That in itself makes the EU valuable. Editor’s note: This comment has been anonymized in accordance with applicable law(s).

Anti-Europeanism is still rampant in DC and the country more broadly. Interesting book on the subject is Mark Powell's "Anti-Europeanism in Contemporary American Discourses". Trump personifies this phenomenon.

Trump praises dictators and enemies and criticizes friends and allies. What twisted logic could be behind this? Why does Putin and Russia always seem to be Trump's source of inspiration? At what point does circumstantial evidence build to fact? Is Donald Russia's "Manchurian Candidate"?

Pompeo channelling Trump’s pettiness. If anyone thought there were any “adults” left....

I doubt this is much about "opportunity to maximize short-term gains for the U.S." More likely about keeping Putin happy.

One more attack on our friends and partners. Can we survive much more of this?

The E.U. is an experiment as great as the federation of American states. Both give up certain nationalist (selfish) rights for the benefit of the greater whole. Obviously, it isn't easy. Arguably, the E.U. is a tougher nut since it's constituent members speak a variety of languages, have distinctive cultures, and all once had their own currencies. Yet, excepting Britain's self-absorbed navel gazing, there it is, still standing, still strong. It should be accorded the highest diplomatic status and the U.S. should be doing everything it can to promote its long-term success. Instead, we're trying to break it apart.

Donald Trump's assertions about the value of the EU to our foreign policy are both sad and childish. Its as if he projects an overpersonaluzation of everything in politics to the nation as a whole. i In addition to how much he whines about being badly treated by the press, his demotion of the EU shows how much this president fears our alliances. Its as if America were being "shafted " in a bizarre projection of how much he identifies US state woes as personal to him This "etat, c'est moi" has the ring of an authoritarian" ruler not a democratically elected president of the United States.

Can I just say how appreciative I am that you included the actual facts in brackets on two occasions in this article. Without them I wouldn’t have known the truth and would have been stuck with Trump’s false claims in my head. It’s unfortunate that they’re needed, but I’m grateful you did it.

@Fin What the heck are you talking about? You provocatively suggest this article lacks facts but don't state what you "believe" the truth to be. What are you a cyber bot?

Hundreds if not thousands of U.S. companies do business with E.U. countries and have operations in E.U. countries. The U.S. is connected to the E.U. through mutual values, shared goals, and global supply chains that benefit Americans and our quality of life. While moving jobs abroad and hiring H-1 Visa workers to replace Americans is a serious problem, surely insulting the E.U. and downgrading its diplomatic status is not the answer. Unless of course your getting your orders from Putin.
