they stole the stachou but theye cant toch it. Because they might get the finger print on them so they cover it then tack it.allong with them dut if they tuch it thay have got it on them the finger print.
k (new zealand)
i think they are putting a blanket over it because they want to get the person that stole its finger prints so they can find them and so they don't put there finger print on it

Detectives are covering up a statue of Mother Mary. Maybe it is part of a TV show or a movie. They look like police officers because of their badges and uniforms. It is a very weird "crime scene" if that is what you want to call it.

"The Homicide of Mother Mary"

Most Italians are cathlic and if they still stick to the old ways and firm in what they believe in this (throwing mother Mary's statue on the ground) is the same as killing someone and special care must be taken as shown i the picture. I see the well built man on the left is married and the one that is doctoring mother mary isn't, i also see its not really in a good area as the signs have been violated. I am from Africa and most of the poor area's break something down when someone wants to build something like a church for instance.

The police are covering up a stolen gravestone.
Tierra (School)
It reminds me of the death of religion or purity, in the sense that someone stole and dropped off the statue of the praying maiden by the highway. It also appears that they are covering it, as one covers a dead body.
De la garza's Paws Class (FMS)
Someone reported to the police that there was a homeless person sleeping there and when they uncovered it, it was a statue. A man reported a man throwing away a statue. An investigator came to investigate the scene. Someone graffiti a church and knocked down the statue so they were burring it. A statue as stolen and dumped by a highway.
Lyssy's Paws Class (FMS)
Someone is unwrapping evidence because there are police and it looks like they are investigating. Could be vandalized. Someone could of stolen the statue the cops were in pursuit and they threw it out the window it is next to a highway. It is a church statue because the hands are folded holding a cross.
Norment's Paws Class (FMS)
The Statue fell down or Vandalism happened and they are respectfully trying to get it back to its belonging spot. Could been a gravestone statue. They could be fake cops There are no police cars. Someone stole a very old Christian statue. Someone thought there was a body and when the cops uncovered it, it was a statue.
Raina (Vermont)
Someone vandalized a religious statue, probably in the 70's by the looks of it. They found it on the side of the road.
Jayne (Ohio )
The statue doesn’t belong where it is and the police officers are investigating. The statue looks like it’s older.Maybe it was stolen and ended up there.
6th grade LCA (Wisconsin)
We think the statue was stolen from a museum for a lot money. There was a car chase, the thief stopped the car and started to run with the statue. He dropped it and ran through the woods. Then the police stopped their car and took a look at the statue. The police wrote down the evidence on the clip board. We think that the season in this picture is fall because, the trees do not have any leaves and grass is dead. We think this photo occurred in 1970's because, of the car models and the police jackets.
7th grade LCA Friday (wisconsin)
Based off what we seen on the photo, we can make generalizations that it is a crime scene. The statue was probably stolen from a Catholic church and someone dropped it on the side of the highway due to seeing the guard rails. The police found the statue and covered it to preserve the fingerprint evidence. This occurred during the late Fall because the trees do not have any leaves and in an abandoned area since there is garbage and graffiti.
Raina (Vermont)
@7th grade LCA Friday I agree that it was stolen, probably from a church. I wonder if it was just regular vandalism or if it was some sort of protest.
Mr. E's 4odd (Norfolk, VA)
Medusa froze a woman. Someone stole the statue. They ditched it and the police found it and they don't want to get their fingerprints on it. Maybe the statue is a dead body.
Tian R (PCS)
I think someone stole a statue from somewhere and dumped it on the side of the road. I think it has to do something with religion because the statue is one you might find in a church. I think the police just found the statue and are going to return it to where it came from.
daniel (vermont)
it looks like a statchew someone stole for a church. the police found it behind the sigh

Somebody probably stole the statue from a church and threw it on the highway. It was found on the ground during fall because the trees didn't have leaves. The police are investigating the crime scene because they are writing things down on a clipboard. They are covering the statue up to preserve the fingerprints.
daniel (vermont)
@7/8 Lca it looks like its is for a church, it also looks old.
Mr. E's 1E (Norfolk, VA)
It was in the 1980's. They discovered a statue. I want to know if it was evidence of a crime. I see graffiti on the sign. Is the guy with the blanket a cop or a priest?
Tian R (PCS)
@Mr. E's 1E I think the statue was stolen from somewhere and the police are going to return it to where it came from.
Larissa (Pcs)
It looks like a religious statue was either vandalized or stolen because it is on the side of a highway and there is a man covering it up, and there is also a police officer behind him. It looks like there is graffiti on the sign behind the man and the police officer.
Mrs. Schutz 4/5th period class (Rhome, TX)
We think this is a religious statue found on the side of the highway in a bad part of town. We think the statue was stolen by someone and the police uncovered it there by the road. We think the time period of this photo was taken in the 1960's.
Martinez Paw's Class (FMS)
The statue looks like Mary, and the guy covering the statue could be a priest. It could of been stolen or vandalized and dumped next to a highway. Due to the cops it seems like it is a crime scene. This photo looks old because it is in black and white, the cars are old, and the uniforms are not of our time era.
Mrs. B's Class (Croydon, Pennsylvania)
We think that this picture took place a long time ago, at a crime scene, where a religious statue was found on the side of a road.
Mr. E's 2odd (Norfolk, VA)
They though it was a dead body but it was really just a religious statue.
7/8th grade LCA (wisconsin)
We think the police and detectives found a stolen statue. The officers are trying figure who put the statue on the ground. They were taking the cloth off to determine what was under it and find fingerprints. They are using the clipboard to record notes about the crime scene. This occurred during Fall/Winter because the trees do not have leaves.
Larissa (Pcs)
@7/8th grade LCA I agree with this
Mrs. Schutz's 1&2nd period class (Rhome, TX)
We think this picture is from the mid-twentieth century because of the old car in the back and the way the men are dressed. We think this photo was taken outside of an abandoned Catholic church and this is a religious statue that was stolen.
Kastler High School (France)
The Virgin Mary is lying on the floor and look like a dead person. The policemen are treating her like a corpse. Maybe the policemen wanted to identify who did the crime of breaking the statue and the sheet is here to preserve the fingerprint.
Rendy hernandez (john a ferguson high school)
What i see is three police man, a statue, police cars, trees, and a street. What i think is going three police man are looking at a piece of evidence one of them is uncovering the statue the second police man with a hat is looking closely at statue to see what he is going to in the report, and the other police officer is stunned by the statue, this picture is very old because is on black and white.
Fern P (Putney Central School)
I see two police officers and another man covering a statue of the Virgin Mary. The man who is blanketing the statue looks like he is probably not a police officer, based on his lack of badges, tie and hat. I think the fact that he is covering Mary is significant. Maybe he is some sort of religious figure or member of the church. Another possibility is that the statue contains a bomb or something like that, and the man who is nearest to it is a bomb disposal person that they called in.
miles (putney central)
I see a religious statue being either covered or uncovered by a police officer. It appears to be on the side of a road. They may have seen it from the road, and possibly thinking it was a body, they decided to investigate. They probably uncovered it, and realized that unlike they had predicted, it was a statue, possibly from a church.
AEL (Portland, OR)
This is a photo of two cops and another guy, who I think is also working for the police force, covering a statue of Virgin Mary. This picture is probably from the 80s, since the cars are old. The men all seem sad, not happy. Also, Virgin May is laying on a sheet, while one man puts a blanket over her. It looks as though they're putting her to sleep. It also looks like they're on the side of the highway too. I don't think this is a professional investigation, it looks more like they are doing it on their own time.
phoebe w (pcs)
I think that some one took a statue of some religious person and dumped it on the high way or a shopping mall and the cops found it and are taking it back to where it belongs. I say that because cops are moving a statue from a weird place that it should not be. I also think this photo is old because it is black and white and the cars in the back are old.
Colin Elliott (Portland, OR)
circa 1980s, NYPD Police Officers take care of a fallen roadside memorial of the Virgin Mary. It may have fallen over and they are just covering it for respect.
Hadley (Portland)
In this picture, I see two cops covering a statue that is laying on the ground. No one is touching the statue so I believe that it is partof a further investigation. I think that the statue may have been covered when they origanally found it because the blanket is dirty and not what the police would typically use. I think it is part of a further investigation. Based off the graffiti, they aren't somewhere you would normally find a statue like this.
7th grade (Wisconsin)
We think the statue was stolen from a church. Someone dropped it and ran. The police are doing and investigation because someone probably reported the statue stolen. The detectives are obtaining fingerprints and clues. This occurred during Fall due to the scenery.
Miss Chalmers and Zack (Hudson, NY)
We think this image is showing that the cops knocked the statue over and now they want to cover it. They want to hide it so that no one else sees it. If people see it, they might call the real cops. We think these cops are fake. We also noticed graffiti and cars parked. We think they're pulled over on the side of a highway. We think the statue is a symbol of peace and whoever knocked it down must hate peace.
Maria Marquez (John A Ferguson High School Miami)
Things I see: -the statue of the Virgin Mary -Cold Winter with a cloudy sky -Trees without leaves -Policemen -Dark old cars It all started a few weeks ago when winter was coming. The cold felt more than ever and the leaves of the trees began to fall. An 80 years old ole woman had had a statue of the Virgin Mary in her house for decades. She was very Catholic and every morning after awakening she prayed for her relatives; even she prayed for the catastrophes that have been happening in the world lately. Strange things began to happen inside the house, until one day when everything came to an end. A criminal entered the house to steal jewelry that the old woman had, when he saw that she was awake, she thought that the only thing he could do was murder her; so he did it. He search the entire house and find a paper saying that all the jewels were buried under the statue. The old woman had that note to let her relatives know where all her inheritance was. The murderer broke the statue and made the robbery. When he left he had to take the statue because he did not want to leave there because it could have his fingerprints. He left with the jewels and the statue and began his long journey. He found a perfect place to put the statue; Then he left it and left. Days later the policy found the statue and after great investigations they managed to know its history.
Nicolas Ordonez (John A. Ferguson senior High, Miami)
In the picture I see two cops and a forensic investigator. I see four cars. The background as a desert or a cold remote place. The scene its happening by a desolated street. There is rope, a blanket and a statue of the Virgin Maria. What may be happening in the picture is that in a distance in a desert or a place pretty much inhabited, people had seen a strange figure covered with a blanket and it looked suspicious. Someone may had reported the situation and then, officers arrived at the scene to investigate what was happening. As the situation could seem as a murder or a crime, a forensic investigator was needed. When the officers and the investigator got to the scene they unwrapped the blanket to find what was inside and then they found out that it was a statue. But now they have to find out how it got there.
Room 215 (Milton ON Canada)
An atheist stole the statue of the Virgin Mary and threw it in the ditch after being chased by police. The police are investigating with the priest who is covering the statue because its blessed. Takes place in the 1980s-90s because of the old cars.
miles (putney central)
@Room 215 It definitely could be something like that, it seems that you might know a bit of the backstory, or just some good investigative skills.
cole nelson (pcs)
i think these men are covering up the statue so it doesn't get damaged after it was knocked over by people doing property damage. this probably happend in the 1970's based on the cars.
Ilanit Ramos (John A. Ferguson High School,Miami)
One Virgin Mary,Two policeman, one forensic man,a damaged blanket, three cars Peugeot of 1889,drys sticks, dry grass, striped walls,Rosary beads, clapboard with papers,Street lamps. 1-I see cars 2-I see grass 3-I see trees 4-I see officers 5-I see a statue What I think whats going on this, that they found a statue out there somewhere and are trying to cover it to see where it came from and for it not to be damage. I think this is the way they are protecting the statue. I could also see that they seem like its from a church.
Donnovan (pcs)
@Davier Monzon 1 why would they cover up a statue on the side of a road to find out where it came from 2 it might not be from a church :P
cristian munos (John A ferguson SHS Miami)
in the picture : 1:2 police officers 2:1 detective 3:3 cars 4:1 statue of virgin 5:1 place abandoned 6:maybe is in the years of 70s or 80s my history: the police try to find a statue of virgin that was stolen, the police looking for days but the police could not find it and one detective who worked on the case find tracks of the whereabouts of the statue, and he ordered an arrest on the criminals who stole the statue but in the place where they were arrested they did not find the statue or traces of them and after an interrogation to the criminals it was finally possible to know where the statue of the virgin was and the reason why it was stolen, the thieves confessed that they stole the statue because someone had paid them to steal it and leave it in a place where nobody could find it and although after confessing it was never known who was the one who contracted them and thus closed the case of the statue of the virgin stolen.
Cristina Mendez (Ferguson high school Miami fl )
I see a detective, policeman with folder , a ground, cars, blanket, statue, policeman -This happen in the afternoon, this happened because of a vandalism so there are cops and in detective in this case apparently the people who stole this statue don't want to leave evidence. So the detective covered the statue that is on the ground for the other person they can see this crime and pick up for investigate this crime.
Georgina Ghosn (John A. Ferguson High school Miami)
I see policeman's, a detective, cars and a statue. In this picture shows a statue that was stolen from a church and the thief left it abandoned because the police chasing it and managed to escape. The police along with the detective are investigating who the thief is and that's why they need the statue to see if their prints appear.

When they arrived at the scene, they were anxious about the caset, hey had found a statue of the Virgin in an abandoned place, aroundfrom it the vegetation was burned. The officers and the investigator created the history that facts believed had happened.Someone who was in that religion wanted to burn the statue.
Anna (US)
I think this is set in the united states and I think it's in the 1970s because of the polices' appearances. It looks like they're covering a religions statue as they would cover a dead body. Maybe this statue was thrown out so the police are covering it for respect? Also many different cultures are rooted in the US, and Christianity has become less prominent, so the police are laying that religious dominance to rest.
Jessica Boza (JOHN/FERGUSON SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL)
What we can see in this picture is: 1. religions statue 2. 4 old police cars 3. dry grass and trees 4. 2 police 5. a detective 6. a signal poster 7. proof of evidence 8. a board with drawing 9. a signal poster One day in the early morning few police was checking the place if everything was fine but they went through an abandoned place years ago and discovered a religious statue and they stop and call the detective to investigate this thing and that was there years ago when one day
Brando Ventura (John A. Ferguson High School, Miami Fl)
in the picture you can see a two polices , a detective , a statue, police cars , bed sheet, a wood with graffiti, stick of light, mustache, decorated uniform, a glass, mustache, a police hat, a watch, jacket, In 1969 two polices and a detective found a statue that was there for many years, the cops and the detective was looking for this statue for years because that statue was abandoned in a church ancient
DANIELA ALMEIDA (JOHN.A FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL,MIAMI)
On this picture we can see: a religion statue two police a detective the feet of a man an estranger thigs on the floor The police officers made their journey as every day, but that morning they saw something stranger on the side of the road. There were many cars attached as if there had been an accident, but it was weird because no one had called the authorities. The officers approached and there was nobody but they see a religion statue so they call the detective to check and see if something was wrong with that.
Stephanie Ravelo (John A Ferguson SHS Miami)
Description of the picture: -cop -statue -police car -blanket -an old place -criminalist person -signal in the back -gray sky -blanked -trash This story is mainly about a crime that's happened long time ago. There are a cop investigating the statue and potentially uncovering it. They are picking up a historical or cultural artifact that someone left in that old place. What happened is that somebody stole a statue of some Virgin , probably from a church and the police have found it and are taking a picture like this because it makes look like a murder scene and they need to find the person that did it.The cars look like they are from the 1970s-80s. Mostly this pictures is showing an investigation about this old crime.

Weeks ago, the police and the firefighters go to see what the place looks now, they don’t see animals or a type of life. It is a dark morning and they see all the destroyed houses the forensic start searching, and he found a rare statue. He says that the cause of the dire threw the statue there for hide the evidence.
Ramiro Ruano (Johon A Ferguson igh School (Miami))
I can see two policeman's, two car and these cars seen are classic or old, the cars look like they are from the 1970s-80, one detective, a broken statue, also there is a graffiti, the picture is in black and white, this picture looks like it was taken quite a few years ago, 20 or more judging by the style of glasses and jacket the policeman in the back is wearing. Here we have a crime, one of police officers are using a clipboard to record the information about that religious statue. They are trying to protect the fingerprints from that statue of Virgin Mary. So I believe that police officer are investigating someone who threw out a religious statue out of disrespect because they are covering the statue with a blanket, recording the information and protect the fingerprints from that religious statues.
Adianez Mendez (JohnA.FergusonSeniorHighSchool Miami, FL)
two cops three cars from the police a statue of the virgin a back of a sign with marks of graffiti a desert zone a forensic In the image we can see two cops, a statue of the virgin and a forensic in a desert zone where a crime occurred. The forensic is looking for evidence of that crime, one of the cops are taking notes about what he saw in the scene and the other one is looking at them. After they look for evidence the forensic covered the statue of virgin with a blanket.

Part 1: -policeman -statue -cars -white blanket Part 2 : I think that, in the photo looks as if someone found a statue. Maybe the policemen are picking it up because someone threw it out. It could also be evidence or something for any case.

I can see a criminal scene, because there are tow polices.
Gabriel Carvalho (John Ferguson A. High School|)
1. Two polices 2. Abandoned area 3. Some cars ( also abandoned ) 4. Evidences 5. A covered statue This morning tow polices found a statue that was lost a long time ago. The statue is rare and is a article of museum the statue was in a abandoned area left for somebody
G. Costanza (Norfolk, VA)
My students have suggested that maybe the statue was possibly stolen and during the subsequent police chase it was either thrown out while driving or possibly the car was in an accident as a result of the chase.
Sidd and Owen (Basel, Switzerland)
The policeman's body type, mustache, his decorated uniform, and the style of cars (boxy Chryslers with solid hubcaps) lead us to believe this picture was taken in the United States. Also, it was not taken recently, rather in the 1970s or 80s, for the aforementioned reasons as well as how granular and colorless the photograph is. Furthermore, the landscape - dry grass, sprawling roads, graffitied street signs - suggests the men are in the rural US. We think the man is removing the shroud of sorts from the statue as there are concentrated creases and marks where the fabric would rest on the head and shoulders. The man doing the uncovering is not a policeman, due to his dress (or lack thereof). Instead, he is probably a local resident who has enlisted the help of the police. Alternatively he could be an investigator or detective type. We think some act of vandalism has been perpetrated because a statue that looks as though it should be part of a church or graveyard has been disunited from its original abode. The police were called to investigate such a crime.
Jake and Casper (Basel)
We see a statue laying on the ground outside a building. There are police investigating the statue and potentially uncovering it. It could be that they are uncovering a historical or cultural artifact. It could be that a crime organisation stole this from a church and then left it behind.
AJ CB LD (Basel)
We think that this happened after a vandalism and that's why the cops are there. We also think that the statue was stolen or taken to prove a financial or religious purposes. This is probably anti-christian if it is indeed proving a religious point. The area arround it does not look very rich, so it might be a high crime rate area. This might also explain why the police is there.
Katelyn, Anyca (Basel, Switzerland)
This picture looks like it was taken quite a few years ago, 20 or more judging by the style of glasses and jacket the policeman in the back is wearing. This could also just be his personal style. The quality of the photo implies it was taken a while ago, as do the cars in the background. The silver on the edge of the cars was popular in the 1900s. We think that the statue is being covered because it was a religious figure and people respected them very much back then. To show respect for an inanimate figure they cover it to provide peace. This picture was taken on the side of a highway, so someone might have been trying to place it somewhere where most people wouldn't find it, the long grass provided some cover. There are quite a few cars gathered near the scene, and somber faces, which could mean this was a serious crime scene.
Delliot (basel)
We believe that the police officers (the two on the right) are investigating a crime scene where either: A: A statue was stolen and found further along the road B: statues outside a graveyard/church were broken and tipped over by vandals The model of the cars, the outfit of the officers, and the quality of the pictures led us to believe that this was taken in the 70s-80s.
Rafa and Carter (Basel)
This image seems to be from the late 60s early 70s. In the image we can see a statue of a holy figure. We suspect the it was once stolen and later found by the police.
M & O (Basel, Switzerland)
Somebody stole a statue of the Virgin Mary, probably from a church. The police have found it and are taking a picture like this because it makes it look like a murder scene. It was either stolen to be sold or to hurt the church. The cars look like they are from the 1970s-80s and the image is clear but colorless. The coats and the lack of leaves make me think that this is winter or autumn
Eden and Amelia (Switzerland )
We think this picture was set in America because of their outfits and the badges they are wearing. We also think this picture was set in 1960's because the cars look like they are from the 1960's and the picture is in black and white. The statue looks like it represents Christianity because it is holding rosemary beads. We think the police are investigating a crime that may have happened against the church.
Emily & Salma (Basel, Switzerland)
We see that the picture is in black and white, and the cars seen classic/old. Because of this, we think it could be the 1950s-70s. It seems weird that the blanket has a pattern since normal police issued ones wouldn't. The statue seems very out of place, however the policemen have relatively calm expressions.
When your husband leaves (Widow Mode)
This looks like it was the closing of 21 jump Street. The police are investigating in a murderer escape.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We had a lot of thoughts about this picture. We think this picture was taken in the past because of the old cars in the background and the 80's style glasses on the police officer. We also noticed that the statue looks like it came from a church. The statue doesn't look to belong where it is so we think that it was stolen and the police officers are trying to figure out where it goes and how it got there and who did it. They are covering it up to keep it safe and take it back to where it belongs.
Fern P (Putney Central School)
@Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade That is very observant about the glasses! I hadn't noticed that. I think that it is a good possibility that it was stolen. Maybe from a museum or church? Maybe the statue is worth a lot of money and whoever stole it put it there, thinking no one would find it until they could find a better place for it. Very good ideas.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
@Fern P Thank you! We agree that it is a good possibility that the statue could have been stolen from a museum or church.
Naomi and Noah (Basel, CH)
In this picture we can see a toppled statue from a Church or religious institution being covered by a blanket by a man. Two police officers are seen standing behind him. This picture was probably taken in the mid-19th century because of the older looking cars. The statue is definitely out of place which could suggest that it could have been stolen.
Mrs. Owens's Skills Block Class (Homer, NY)
We have many guesses as to the time frame of this picture. But the guesses are near the 70's & 80's. Students noticed the possible highway sign with graffiti on it, cars and guard rail hypothesizing that this setting is near a highway. The religious statue was found on the side of the road covered in a blanket. The police officers are investigating why it's there.
Dylan Comet (Hanover horton)
What I see is going on in this picture is three policemen laying a blanket over a statue of the Virgin. One of the policemen has a clipboard . The setting appears to be in a parking lot where not many people go to because there is graffiti. The picture also tells me that the event is not recent and happened a long time ago, so by that time they would not have the technology to solve the case as quick as it could have happened now, the criminal that committed the homicide ran away from the town with the body and decided to leave little clues for the officer to thinks that he was approaching to the end of the case
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
Nathaniel Jackson I think somebody stole this statue from a graveyard. This statue was probably made for a very important person. Maybe the person that took the statue probably didn't like the person and it looks like they threw it on the side of the road. The police are investigating who did this.
Frank Junco, John A Ferguson High School (Miami, FL)
1.A foggy morning. 2.An abandoned area. 3.A statue of a virgin. 4.A detective. 5.Two police officers. 6.Proof of evidence. 7.A back of a sign. 8.Four cars. After many days of searching, this early morning was found the valuable statue of the virgin that was stolen last month from The Art Museum. It was hidden in an abandoned area wrapped with blankets behind a sign outside the city. The detective had received information from his sources about a possibility to check that area. He came with two police officers to the scene which served as witnesses in this important finding. After collect all the evidence in the area, the statue was returned to the police station to be analyze. Apparently the statue was in perfect condition, Once the investigation finish it will be returned to the Museum to be delighted by every one who visits it.
King Isaac (California)
The police are investigating the stolen statue from the museum and are going to return it to the museum.
MelissaValladaresJohnAFergusonSeniorHM (John A Ferguson Senior High SchoolMiami )
In the image you can see two policeman and a man who looks like a doctor who is covering the statue with a white blanket. The place is as isolated and abandoned and has some garbage on the ground, also the day looks dark as if it were going to rain. The police look like they are surprised by what they are seeing since it is not something that happens every day. In the back you can see some police cars and maybe an ambulance. The white statue is a woman with a crucifix in her hand so it can be seen that it represents a religion and also because of the color of the image it appears to be ancient. I think that what is really happening in that image is something strange but it looks like the scene of a crime. Maybe an assault in some place where the statue was found, or something similar and that's why the policemen are there and a man is covering the statue or an accident occurred and they are taking the clues of the scene and the statue is part of the evidences .
Michelle K (SKHS)
In the photo, it looks as if someone found a statue or something. Maybe the policemen are picking it up because someone threw it out. Judging the cars and the lack of color in this photo, it is probably not recent. It could also be evidence for something.
sammy ludlow (skhs highschool)
I see what looks like 2 cops covering something that looks like a statue that appears to be a woman praying. I think they are covering her with a blanket of some sort. A crime that happened at a nearby highway maybe. The man with the blanket looks upset and the police look annoyed.
Carstyn C (SKHS)
I see three policemen, one standing in the back right corner. A second man kneeling behind the first with a clipboard. The third man is laying a blanket over a Mother Mary statue that has fallen on her eide. There is a building in the background that looks abandoned because it has a lot of graffiti on the walls. In this photo, there are two rules of photography that I found. The first rule that stands out to me most is the depth and overlapping: with the statue, then each policemen behind each other and then the cars behind them. The second rule of photography that I noticed was the viewpoint: eye lever because it is not from above but it is also not looking up at the main subjects of the image. If something like this happened in my neighborhood I would be annoyed because there are three policemen being distracted by a fallen Mary statue that isn’t even broken. They are acting like she has died and I don’t get why.
Yoink (SKHS)
This photo shows three police officers uncovering a statue/sculpture of a religious women. The photo is in black and white, hinting that this image is possibly from the 80’s or 90’s. The statue could have been stolen from a church or from someone’s home, though there is the possibility someone reported that the statue was a body.
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
@Yoink Nathaniel Why do you think the police officers are annoyed ? Do you think this statue meant something important to them?
Squad7 (NH)
@srvt We were intrigued by your commentary. We've been discussing whether the officers are covering or uncovering the statue/body. Maybe they are annoyed because they thought it was a body under those blankets, but then realized it was actually a statue. What do you think?
Granth V (SKHS)
What i see in this photo is that there is a christian statue and cops surrounding it. It might be evidence on a case they might be working on. What rules of photography i believe is use is leading lines, balances, and view point. If this happened in my neighborhood my reaction would be very confused and ask myself why is there a random statue in my neighborhood.
Emmeline (SKHS)
I see several law enforcement officials covering what appears to be a religious artifact with a blanket. One of the officers is holding a clipboard which makes me think he has some sort of investigatory report and the statue was involved in some sort or criminal act, such as vandalism.
Alexa H (port orchard WA)
In this photo there are 3 police officers and one is covering up what seems to be a religious statue. The faces of the officers look mornfull and serious because what happened was serious and sad. The statue probably means something to where they are. It looks like its a crime scene that someone stole and dumped a piece of an important church.
christian b (south kitsap highschool)
I believe that in this photo it could be a crime scene investigation, is this because there is a blanket that covers a item and there is also three police officers around the item. I can also see that it's on the side of the road and the police officers stopped to do an investigation.
Sandra (SKHS)
It really look like the man is being a bit dramatic because usually only deceased bodies get something laid over them, and the cops behind him look like they don’t want to be there but out of respect they are. I say this because the man is putting a blanket or something over what looks like a stationary thing. And the facial expressions of the officers.
MCskhs (port orchard)
The photo looks like,a statue from a nearby church was stolen and dumped next to a highway and covered with a blanket.
phoebe w (pcs)
@MCskhs I agree with you, I said something similar to what you said.
Blake Baldschun (SKHS)
What i see here is 3 policemen on the side of a highway mabey picking up an old artifact from a run down or burnt down church. My guess it that they are taking it to a museum where they love old creepy artifacts like this one.
Darren, Comet (Hanover-Horton High School)
This picture has two police officers and a random man, maybe a forensic scientist. It looks like they are investigating a crime scene. He’s covering up a statue of a saint so possibly it was a hate crime or the statue could have fingerprints on it from the criminal. There is also graffiti on the sign next to them.
Trevor (south kitsap highschool)
I think that this picture is showing a man that is trying to get a statue back that someone took. The statue looks to be religious. The cops are there so that the man does not smash the statue. This picture seems to be older because it is quite blurry and discolored. Could be crime scene?
Darshan (NYIT)
In this picture, the three police men came over to this neighborhood to pick up a stature that seems like someone either pushed it down or it just has been thrown out. So one police man is trying to put a blanket over it to cover it so they can take to the dumpster or they will just bring it to a museum as an "old and ancient statue". The statue looks kind of like 'Maria, the mother of Jesus'.
Darr's Paw Class (FMS)
Clue from a crime scene. Statue from a church was stolen and dumped next to a high way and covered with a blanket. The cop were uncovering it. The statue could be valuable. It could also be from a family that put a statue next to highway for a memory for a family member/friend. It was found and reported.
Bian (NYIT)
According to those old cars and graffiti, I think this photo may be an old photo. It is showed to celebrate the church which was destroyed decades ago has been fixed and rebuilt. Now people go to the church to celebrate its re-opening.

First, let me tell a joke: Police officers are being told somewhere has a bomb, so they go to check, and they find two jokers (poker cards, in Chinese two jokers together called bomb). So I guess, these two police man and the man in front of them, a detective, are being tricked... Another guess. The cars in this picture are in old fashion, so maybe this is a normal picture but related to a famous riot or other kinds of events in the past. Like Nov. 26 1984?

Three policemen found evidence of a crime they were assigned to solve, they found a statue laying on the side of a highway, they need to get that piece of evidence to the station but they cannot get their fingerprints in it , so they are laying a blanket over it to help do their job correctly because only one of them brought gloves and those he has are to protect him from the cold not to handle important evidence. One of them going to carry the statue, the other one is writing stuff down on the board for the report he has to do .
Steven (New York)
In my opinion, the man who grasped the blanket was an agent, and behind of him were two police officer. In this picture, it's look like they found some evidences for a case which they were researching.
hemi (new york)
According to the photo we can see a white police officer, there is a police who has in his hands a white paper, behind this officer we can see two old cars, there is another officer just standing , we also can see a gray blanket and a statue on the floor. The reason of the statue on ground can be any bad weather or any statue stolen issue.
Nini (new york)
They are some actors trying to make an ironic public service ad or picture to show that this is a memorial ceremony about the death of religion. People don't pay much attention on some religion anymore. Some religion has vanished just like the picture shows: the nun is dead, which means the religion is dead, people are no longer devout and reverent. They are burying the belief.
ning (New York)
I think someone thought there was a died people sleep at here and he called cops. And those cops came to see if it was right. But when they opened the quilt they saw a statue.
Danny (New York City)
There are three people here are covering the Christian statue on the grass. Maybe some people had just destroyed a church and they put the statue down. Before the statue was destroyed, some people called the police. When policemen came here, they covered the statue for respect.
JOY (New York)
I think this could be the scene where a piece of evidence was found. This statue is a evidence. who use this statue to kill someone and until now they didn't found the murderer. now they find the evidence they can use this to search the murderer. So they need protect this statue and send it to police office.
Kelly (New York)
In the picture, a statue was stolen from nearly church which was broken. Some one called the policemen, three policemen came to here and found the statue on the side of road. A car would be come from far away for move the statue, before the car come, a policeman covered the statue use a quilt because they did not want the statue be hurt again.
Yixuan (New York)
In my opinion, this sculpture is a evidence of the clime. This is a seemingly desolate place. There are police officers bring the clipboard, and cover it to protect the evidence.

Jamari - I think someone broke into a church. They took the statue and put it in a truck and drove to the highway. They put it on a pile of sticks and covered it. This person saw it and called the cops. He showed the cops what it was and covered it again. I think the person in the back is walking to the vehicle to get a camera. The person that broke the statue wrote on the sign. Sonny - A man broke into a church and stole the statue. Then they went to the highway so the cops had a hard time trying to find them. Then they got rid of it and covered it with a blanket. The cops found it and inspected it. Mrs. Barrett - I'm wondering if they stole the statue from a graveyard. It was a marker and they wanted to vandalize the site. They took it and then threw it out of their vehicle wrapped in a blanket. Someone driving by saw the bundle and called the police who came to investigate.

In this image,You can see two cops,A detective, four cars, grass, blanket and religous statue. 23 years ago there was a report sent to the police office from the church because someone broke in and stole a religious statue,A week had passed from the item being stolen and and then the police station got a call from a random stranger telling them that he had seen a statue on the side of the road in the grass, A personal investigator from the church had been sent with the cops to go check out the statue to see if it was the real one, when he verified that the statue was the right one he wrapped it up with a blanket and returned it to the church.

A statue of Virgin Mary next to the road. A old blanket. A 1970 Cadillac. A forest in winter time. Graffiti on a sign. Two cops. An old police car. New York. In New York, two police men and another man are investigating a crime that was committed with a statue of the Virgin Mary found next toe the road. This happened close to a forest, where the two police men and the other man found the religious statue behind a signal and then cover it with an old blanket. This happen during winter time. The men thought this could be a possible appearance of Mary. Moreover, they took The statue in a 170 Cadillac to a Church.

what is going on in this picture? A religious statue of Virgin Mary. Two cops. A forest in the back. A dirty blanket. An old Cadillac. A sign full of graffiti. A Pastor. In New York two police officers found this religious statue of the Virgin Mary abandoned next to a driveway, they called a pastor so he could go where the police officers found the statue, when the pastor arrived and carefully carried her with a blanket, so he could take her to his church and place her in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

I see and old picture from the 1900s, 3 old cars, a really cold and foggy weather, a vandalized poster, a blanket, and a statue that has been stolen. July 12 of 1994 a robbery was repotted at 9:00 am, while at the same time a wild fire was active, the two police officers that were closest to the scene were informed that a Virgin Mary has been robbed from the chapel. The same day in the afternoon the officers encountered the statue laying down where the wild fire had passed an hour before the officers arrived. the two were instructed to cover it with a blanket they were given to cover any time of evidence by the police, when they were covering it the afternoon became gloomy and cold.

In this picture there are two police officers that are accompanying someone to deliver a religious statue, far from the city, it looks like it is old times. People in old times may be persecuted by the government because of their religion, in the picture there is a religious man that was caught and the police officers are doing their job, they told him to leave their religious stuff because they give him a chance to leave his religion behind or go to jail.
Anthony Bolivar, Ferguson high school (Miami)
I see 2 police officers and a detective I also see cars from the old times and one car that looks like a gangster car And a statue in the ground on a dry type of grass A week ago an expensive statue was stolen from one of the Famous catholic church’s in Brooklyn , NY. It seems that a group of gangsters stole the statue from the church because they wanted to sale the statue to rich people. At that day when the incident occurred the gangsters for some reason left the statue in the middle of the road, Most likely they refused to sale the expensive statue because it had an important value so they didn’t wanted to get in more troubles. Finally One day the department of the police founded the statue in the road in the city of Brooklyn, NY at the 6 pm the statue was most likely stolen from a church and was left behind so that nobody could find out who stole it.

1What I see is going on in this picture is three policemen laying a blanket over a statue of the Virgin. One of the policemen has a clipboard . In this picture I see 2 cops, a statue of holy mary being covered with bed sheets, graffiti on the wall, and it also seems like it is happening around the 80's . Because of the graffiti on the wall, it seems like a city with vandalism, and also by the cars that I see in the background, I can tell it could be as old as the 80's, and the 80's was a time in which drug dealers were not that rare, so I feel like some drug dealer, wanted to hide drugs or narcotics, which he hid in the statue, and nobody would not expect to find drugs inside a statue, I can support this by the fact that the statue is in a hole and covered in bed sheets, and I think that the reason why this statue is covered with bed sheets, its so whatever this person put inside, such as money or drugs or narcotics, would not spoil.

~Officers uncovering a statue, a "saint" ~ Old cars. ~ Old dried out grass and trees across the street caused from a fire ~Light posts. It was a late afternoon on a Saturday, November 1st 1985. When a police station received a call from someone saying that there was the dead body of a woman covered with a blanket in the "old empty expressway of California", that's how people call some abandoned street in California. The policemen as soon as they heard the news from this person, turned on theirs cars, the sirens of the cars and got to the place in less than 10 minutes. When they uncovered the " dead body " it turned out to be a statue, a "saint". But this was not a bad surprise, that saint was stolen from the most important church in California and also new evidence to find the suspected who stole it was found ; it was a white towel with fingerprints from the person.

There are three men, two are definitley cops, probably local cops, and the other who might be a detective and a nun statue. The detective guy is covering the nun statue with a blanket, in the way police cover someone who has died in an accidetn or murder. To me it looks lik eht enun is dead and therefore he is covering her up, to protect her form watvhing eyes or people who might stare. This could signifiy that he is trying to protect the nun, a symbol of innocence and religion and goodness. He is trying to protect religion and a=faith as something sacred maybe.

I see a Vandalized building, old cars, dry trees, a dirty blanket or a carpet, trash, a street lamp, a statue of a saint and dry soil. On a cold day in Boston mid 80’s police officers raided a vandalized building that was occupied by a Latin gang group. The building was decorated with their own personal belongings including a statue of the Lady of Guadalupe. Many gang members escaped but some of them didn’t because they tried to carry the statue with them, they realized they were wasting time and left the statue behind, but it wasn’t enough. Police officers covered the statue with a blanket in order to protect the evidence and later look for finger prints.

The picture also tells me that the event is not recent and happened a long time ago, so by that time they would not have the technology to solve the case as quick as it could have happened now, the criminal that committed the homicide ran away from the town with the body and decided to leave little clues for the officer to thinks that he was approaching to the end of the case, when the officer though he had solved the case and found the body covered up with a blanket he realized that the criminal fooled him and ran away leaving no other clues to solve the case.

The real story behind this photo is an investigation because someone stole this statue and did a shooting and then left the virgin in the floor

In this photo, you see one guy laying a blanket over a statue of what looks like one of the Saints. You also see a policeman with a clipboard and a third person who is mostly cropped out of the picture. Based on the cars behind them, my guess is this photo was taken during the 80s. In the background you can see that the back of a billboard has graffiti all over it so maybe this is an investigation of a church that has been vandalized. Maybe this man is trying to respect the symbolic statue by protecting it with a blanket.

*What do you see in this photograph? *What rules of photography can you apply to this photo? *If this happened in your neighborhood - what do you think your reaction would be? This picture has 2 officers and one man that could be a officer but it is not clear. The one man that might be a officer is putting a blanket over a religious statue. I believe that some person either knocked it over or dumped it here. It follows the rule of thirds because the statue is in the bottom corner, it also follows the depth because you see the statue and the people but there are the cars in the background. If this happened in my neighborhood I honestly could care less because religion is just something to make people okay with death.
TK (SKHS Port Orchard WA.)
What is going on in this picture? What I see happening in this photo is three police officers are out by what looks like a road sign on the side of a highway, covering up what looks like a religious statues that was possibly thrown out by someone in a car. The police could also possibly be taking this statue from the side of the road and could be collecting it for something like evidence. What do you see that makes you say that? I think this may have been stolen and then ditched because it is just lying on the side of the road, seemingly just thrown away. Either that, or the police could have been escorting it, but thats unlikely. What more can you find? If you do the “Search Google for Image” option, you can go to an article written by Rebecca Strokes about a book written by Andrew Savulich called “The City” which is a series of photos in New York from the 80’s to the mid 90’s. This particular photo was taken on near the Belt Parkway, someone had stolen this statue, named St. Bernadette, on Christmas from a Brooklyn church.

What I see in this photo is 3 police officers covering a broken statue with a sheet. The picture is in black and white. The officers are all men. It looks like the wo officers are inspecting the scene and trying to find out what is happening, while the other officer is covering the statue with a sheet. The statue is either a man or woman, I can’t tell. The statue must resemble some sort or Christian religion thing because the statue is holding a necklace with the cross on it. The statue also has a robe and headscarf/covering thing on. The position of the statue also looks like a person standing up and praying. From the clothing and the cross, I would say it was some time after jesus died, but also a long time ago when you would dress in a head scarf and robe. It may be a statue of Jesus that someone made once he died, or could just be someone praying who’s Christian.
Cole (Port Orchard, WA)
There is a nun laying on the ground possibly dead and three men wearing either military or police jackets covering her up with a blanket the reason i know it is a nun is because she is wearing white baggy traditional robes also the necklace she is wearing has been worn by nuns for centuries. It looks like it is the 1980’s because of the old fashion cars and cop cars along with the old camera quality. It could be a crime scene because two of the men are analyzing the body and are cops. Oops nevermind it’s a statue.
Keily (Washington)
In this photo, the first thing I noticed is that it is in black and white. There are 3 policemen and two of them are watching the third cop covering a sculpture of a person praying. I see the car in the background soI think that they pulled over to the sculpture. The car looks like an older car and this photo has no color so this is a really old photo from maybe the early 1900s. The first rule of photography I saw is depth. Maybe the crime was that someone stole the statue
Brian (south kitsap)
the police officers are putting a blanket over a statue to take it and make sure that it doesn't break in the process of transportation. the statue was most likely stolen from a church and was left behind so that nobody could find out who stole it. The picture is rather old as it is in black and white and the fact that the police officer are wearing uniforms that are no longer worn by police, as well as the cars are older cars from around the 70's or 80's so somebody probably stole the statue and the church reported the statue stolen and the police officers found it and are going to take it back to the church were it belongs.
Jensen (Drexel Hill, PA)
There are 3 police officers, two of the officers are in uniform and one officer is not in uniform, the officer that is not wearing uniform I think he might be a undercover police or an detective. The police officer that is not wearing uniform is covering the statue that is lying down in the grass. I think this picture was taken in 1980, during fall season. The cars that the officers are using it look like way back car, also the picture is in black and white. My 3 reason why I said that one of the police officer is a undercover officer is that he is not wearing uniform. My second reason why I said this picture was taken during the 1980, is because of the cars the hat that the two police officers are wearing and the background of the place.

Maybe the statue was stolen and thats how the cops responded; maybe because the statue was really important in their town.

In 1970, 3 police officers found a statue lying on the grass next to the highway but one of them is not a police officer or a detective. The statue looks like Virgin Mary or a saint because Mary praying hand gesture and is wearing a veil. The detective is covering the statue with a blanket because he try to protected the statue
saudi (mclc )
What I think whats going on is that they found a statue out there somewhere and are trying to cover it to see where it came from and for it not to be damage. what makes me say this is the way they are covering it. I could also see that they seem like its from a church.

Osio I think in this picture the cops found a statue next to a highway. That picture is from 1600 because the picture is black and white and the car is old model. I think somebody stole the statue but it was heavy so they though it out. Now the cops are investigate. There are two cops in uniforms but one men without uniform who is helping them to investigating.

What I think is going on this picture is that the detectives found a missing item from somewhere important and they finally found it.
Cristina (Drexel Hill, PA)
I think they are two police officers and one detective the police is looking for the statue maybe someone left the statue lying in that place alone just because they did not love her anymore and it was easy for her to throw it out without thinking what other people could say to virgin Mary, it is necessary to have a lot of respect as there are many people who believe in her.

Ethan Kemp 11/27/18 P.2 In this photo it looks like a statue of Jesus may have fallen from a Church or somebody moved it on the ground and Police Officers are treating it carefully as if they are believers. In this photo i see three policemen covering a statue the is maybe of Jesus up with a blanket. Of This photo looks like it is old because it is in black and white and the cars in the background.
Cyrille (Los Angeles)
• Looks like policemen respecting a statue of religiousness after maybe a church getting destroyed or the statue getting damaged • The blanket being placed over the downed statue and the badges and icons on the mens uniforms • I can find out exact identity of the statue and locations upon the incident
Jorge (Drexel Hill, PA)
My opinion about this picture is this could be a witchcraft and i have three 3 reasons that can explain it really well. My first reason is because the virgin is on the ground and is old My second reason is because the picture is really old the picture is from 70’s or maybe older. My third reason is because it looks like in a forest and the picture looks very strange and it looks like Brazil. And somebody made a witchcraft to the status. In conclusion we would say that this is a witchcraft action because the people Brazil makes many witchcraft.
Mariana (BT (MCLC))
1. On this picture you can see that the cops are covering the statue like if this was a murder. 2. What makes me say this is because the cops are covering the statue with a blanket and the place looks abandoned. 3. You can also see that where the person that threw away the statue did this in a abandoned road.
Moca (Los Angeles)
-In this image must have taken during the 80s or the early 90s due to the style and the car in the back. -However there is a religious statue that was found and night be part of a crime. - They what ever they had found must be very important for the reaction on their face but also they way they take care of the item
andres (mclc)
1) POLICE ARE COVERING A STUATE OF GUADALUPE 2) THE STUATE HAS A ROSARY LOOKS LIKE SHE IS PRAYING 3) LOOKS LIKE A OLD UNUSED CHRUCH
Kimmy (BT @ MCLC)
- I believe they found a statue on the ground and are making sure it is in good shape to take it. - There are police officers around and a man (not sure if a police officer) covering a statue. - There is graffiti in the back makes me wonder if it got stolen.
Angela (BT MCLC)
Maybe what is going on in the picture is that it seems like a crime scene but instead of an actual body it is a statue of someone praying the rosary. Either it can be stolen or a sign saying that religion is dead? It makes me say that because of how they're draping the blanket over the statue and how the police officers are there.
JCQUELIN GARCIA (MIGUEL CONTRERAS )
Something that I could infer from the image is that someone must have stolen the statue; but then thought it was too heavy and left it behind. I believe this because why else would police be involved.
Luis A (Miguel Contreras)
What is going on is that the statue needs to be a certain heat and it is reaching a cooling point and needs the blanket to be warmed up. I see a man covering the statue with a blanket while it is laying down. I can find both men appear to be cops and are trying to help by doing the right thing.
Graciella (MCLC)
There is one detective and one police man. The detective is covering a statue of a women holding a rosary. The picture is in white and black and the car looks to be an old car from back then. The police man is married and the blanket is one that is used to sleep with not one that they used to cover a crime scene. Most likely the statue was taken and they went to retrieve it.
Jenny (MCLC BT)
I predict that someone had stolen this statue to disrespect a religion. This picture might have been taken around 1970 because of the age of the cars, meaning that around does times there was still beliefs of that a religion is better than another.
Saurav (Drexel hill PA)
There are 3 cops. Cops are taking the statue off the ground. The one guy who is covering statue look like undercover agent. I think the statue got stolen and someone dig it in the ground. Cops are taking off the statue that someone stole it and dig it in the ground.
Ruby (MCLC)
In the pictures there is a statue on the ground and I can guess that it might have been knocked down. It might have been someone who isn't religious. There police in the crime scene, it makes me think the statue was important. I notice the picture is in black and white. It looks like the crime scene happened on the side of the freeway, and there is a build-board or sign with graffiti.
madelyn (narnia )
the statue was stolen and the person just dumped it in a vacant area. The people who spotted it obviously reported it and now the guys are gonna figure out who stole it in the first place
Lorena (MCLC)
This is definitely a crime scene and the statue could be part of evidence of some type of crime. The first thing that popped into my mind was that someone stole the statue. The police are covering it up and protecting the statue because it is precious to the people in the community.
Ms. Nimeh's Class (Penfield,NY)
We infer that this is a crime scene and someone stole this statue from a church or a graveyard. The picture was probably taken in the 1970's because of the age of the cars, the police uniforms, and that it is black and white. The thief probably left the statue and it is evidence that the police are investigating. Maybe the thief dropped it because it was too heavy. Maybe they are using the blanket to protect the fingerprints on the statue.
De Los Santos Paw Class (FMS)
Someone was robbing the statue and threw it out the window, because there are cops. It looks like a bad side of town due to the graffiti. Looks like the photo was taken a while ago because the cars are old, the cops are wearing old school uniforms, and the photo itself is black and white. The statue is Mary that may have been stolen from a church.
Horizons -5th grade (Mississippi)
Group 1- The statue fell and hurt someone. Group 2- There was a storm and the statue was launched across the road or field. Group 3- Somone knocked down the statue and tried to steal it.
Lauren Eknoian (WHRHS)
They are covering the statue of Mary with a blanket. It looks like it was a crime scene and they are saving evidence. This picture was probably taken a while ago because the cars are older.
Krystyna (WHRHS)
Looks like a statue (possibly from a church) that was stolen and found in this area. It looks like they might be by a highway. You can tell that it is an old picture because of the car in the back.
Patrick (Watchung Hills Regional High School)
In this picture there is a man on the side of the road covering a holy statue with a blanket. He is being escorted by police so he doesn’t seem to be doing anything illegal. I think that maybe someone he knows has passed away in a car crash and that is the place where the crash is. This is because I commonly see flowers or posters on the highway where crashes have happened.
Nav Bal (WHRHS)
This photo looks like a few policemen covering up a statue of a religious statue what could be of mary. The statue could be on the ground due to some damage.
Kristen (WHRHS)
This photo seems to be a scene from a crime that seems to have been taken around the 1970s or 80s. On the ground there is a statue, seeming to be a religious symbol. The officer may be trying to pick up the statue as evidence for a crime and attempting not to get his fingerprints on it, which is why he’s using the sheet.
Andrew Li (WHRHS)
This is a picture from the 20th century which depicts officers looking at and covering a statue of St Mary who fell down. There is graffiti on the sign next to them. This could be the aftermath of a crime where the police are collecting the statue as evidence.
David (whrhs)
This is a picture of a police officer who is checking out the the murder of this statue. I also think this picture is old based on the mustache of the officers.
Connor (WHRHS)
This is an older image, as shown by the old cars, mustachesandand and glasses. The policeare most likeltaking the statue in as evidence for a crime
Mrs. Miller (Indiana)
My 6th grade class thinks this photo shows vandalism at an abandoned church because the statue was knocked over and there is graffiti on the sign as well.
8lepage (Chestermere)
We notice that under the statue there could be something there? Maybe the statue is some sort of god and they worship it? Maybe the statue is being moved? maybe the statue is vandalized? The guy covering the statue with a blanket doesn't look like a cop, he looks like he has lost the statue that the cops found.
Reagan (Iowa)
This is an old picture, as you can tell by the mustache and the car. It is a statue of St. Mary that someone probably stole. The old cops are respectfully covering it with a blanket to bring to the station as evidence as a robbery.
Farmer Jo (Planet Earth)
These policemen are covering up a statue of Saint Mary after it had been knocked over or damaged. Maybe the statue itself committed a crime liking falling over in a prayer garden.
Rebecca (Iowa)
Someone has stolen something from a museum. They stole this statue of Saint Mary. The detective and this police officer have found it hidden in weeds, by a sign, possibly by a parking lot.
Mrs. Reibel's Class (Hoffman Estates, IL)
My third grade class thinks that someone was playing a prank by stealing a statue from either a cemetery or church. They left it on the side of the road and covered it with a blanket to look like a body was lying there. The police are there to investigate.
Hevi (Iowa)
Someone got frozen in carbonite! Finally all that time watch star wars movies and playing star wars battlefront payed off. I know exactly how to get her out!
David (Iowa)
It looks like there was a crime scene and a statue was knocked over. The blanket looking thing is so they don't get finger prints on it.
Carissa (Iowa)
A man stole a statue of St. Mary and the police and detectives are looking for it. The person who stole it didn't want to get in trouble so they hid it out in the middle of nowhere.
Ladnon (Not Here)
Carl was frozen in a state we nerds call carbonate. This is the Empire attempting to take it away so the earthlings don't get suspicious. The Empire has spies posing as a detective and a police officer. They even stole earthling cars.
Kimberly Deering (Saginaw, MI)
My 5th grade ELA class feels that this is a crime scene and the statue was a tombstone that was knocked over.
Ariadna (WHRHS)
In this picture a statue of Mary that fell over and the officers are trying to safely collect the statue. The area looks old with the grass over grown and the graffiti on the walls. The police could also be retrieving a stolen piece of art.
Jenny Miller (New Jersey)
This is a photo from the 1980's. The place that Mother Mary is at is possibly abandoned, due to the graffiti, patchy grass, and all the loose sticks. The statue was probably stolen and dropped off there.
Christina B. (WHRHS)
There are men/police officers who are covering up a little doll/statue whose crossing her hands together. Looks like their in a abandoned area because there’s graffiti and the photo is in black and white, so many they are solving a case. (Maybe supernatural case)
Anish (New Jersey)
in this photo, I believe that the police are recovering the statue of Virgin Mary. As the statue seems to be large and ornate, along with the serious look on the face of the officers, they are either at an abandoned church which still housed some statues or were recovering this statue which was stolen and dumped at this site.
Huynh (Drexel hill)
I believe its going on this picture are someone may stole a religious statue and the cops find the statue laying down on the ground. Also, I can tell this picture happened on 80’-90’ time in the morning because I see some old car on the road. I see one cop start covering the statue with a blanket and one cop sitting behind the another cop covering the statue and on his hand holding the clipboard. However, it’s look like someone threw the statue out of disrespect, and who was stole a statue has faith in their body. Moreover, police officer come and check a statue was stolen and bring back for a church was missing it.
talha (Drexel Hill,PA)
I think its a religion statue and someone stole it from the church and they throw the statue outside so they can disrespect christian. My first reason why I say that because there are 2 police officers investigating and a priest who is covering the statue with the blacket. I think that they are police officers because they are wearing uniforms and they are holding the clipboard. The other guys is a priest because he is not wearing gloves so he can touch the religion statue with his own hand.
Maliik (Drexel hill, PA)
What i think is that the three mans are filming a movie or shooting pictures for news paper . The reason make me think that way is the way how the picture is , what i mean is the three man or almost all the picture it looks fake and the three mans are actors .
Alpha (Drexel Hill)
I think that this was a police investigation. I believe that a group of people break into a church and vandalize the church puberty. There were three men and two of them are police officer and the other man is a dictative. I believe that this is a black church and it was vandalized by white people and this happen 70 to 80 years ago.
Zhi (Drexel Hill)
Zhi In my opinion, I believe that these men are police officers because they are wearing uniforms. I think they are investigating someone who threw out a religious statue out of disrespect; The first reason why I say this is because a man looks like a detective is covering the statue with a blanket and two officers are stay with him. Second, they one of police officers are using a clipboard to record the information about that religious statue. Third, they are trying to protect the fingerprints from that statue of Virgin Mary. In conclusion, I believe that police officer are investigating someone who threw out a religious statue out of disrespect because they are covering the statue with a blanket, recording the information and protect the fingerprints from that religious statues.
Mahmudul (Drexel Hill, PA)
I think the picture is showing us scene of filming movie. The first reason why I say this is because there are two police officers and a detective. Second, there is a statue and the detective is trying to cover the statue with blanket. Third, everything is looking perfect shape which is looking a movie set.
Leemu (drexel hill)
I think that the two police officers are trying to cover a religious statue. The statue may be the Virgin Mary, or it may be another saint. The officers are also investigating to see who stole the statue. I say this because one of the police officers has a clipboard in his hand to see what is going on.And the other police officers is just standing looking, l also think that this happen during the 1980s.
Trisha (Watchung Hills)
It looks like the cops are covering up a statue at a crime scene near an abandoned area, most likely in an old time period such as the 60s or 70s due to the black and white photo.
Satnam (Drexelhill)
Satnam Singh. I believe that the 2 cops were passing by the highway, but they saw the lady statue lying on the grass. They decided to pick the statue up and gave it back to the owner by investigating in the police station. They are going to investigate if someone reported to the police station. I think that they got missing report by the priest of church of statue.
Snowtee (drexill hill)
I believe that the two police officers was investigating on the statue that was stolen from Someone, and the priest was covering the statue with the blanket why the two officers was looking at him. And the two officers were having a uniform on them with the clipboard in his hand. The first reason i say this is because of the things that is happening in the picture.
Dilsherpreet Singh (Drexel Hill )
I believe that they are investigating the scene because there are two police officers and maybe the church minister. They are covering the religious statue with blanket and maybe that statue of Mary. Someone threw out the statue out of disrespect (hate crime). Its seems like that picture is early 1980. Maybe it’s also look like the movie set or photoshoot maybe that three men are actors because the officers are wearing the uniforms but they don’t have a guns.
Kelly Rhyner (WHRHS)
It probably took place a couple of decades ago judging off the cars. The cops are covering a statue with a blanket. The statue is of mother Mary. It looks like it was probably vandalized.
Elizabeth Killeen (Watchung Hills)
Possibly taken in the 60s or 70s, this photo looks like a crime scene investigation. This is based off of the police with clipboards and cars. The statue looks like it is Mary and was stolen and placed in a deserted area for some reason.
Mike W (Whrhs)
This event probably took place in the 70’s. A detective and two police officers are at a scene of a statue laying on the ground. The detective is covering the stature with a tarp. Perhaps the statue was abandoned there or it it fell from an adjacent building. It looks like a crime scene.
michael Sabatella (WHRHS)
I think this is an abandoned place. It looks to be some kind of older chruch and they r moving the nice pieces off the property. It must be taking place in mid 70s or 80s by what the cars look like.
lakhwinder (drexel Hill, PA )
Lakhwinder Singh I believe that someone stole and threw out the statue out in disrespect. The police officers found the statue in the grass. The first reason why I say this because the priest is covering the statue with the police. I think the police will investigate and find the stealers.
Jannatul (Drexel Hill )
Jannatul It look like the priest is covering the religious statue. Two police officer investigate carefully. I think stealer trying to steal the statue. Maybe it is expensive. Maybe priest take it back in charch.
shanajana (Drexel Hill,PA)
I saw that picture three police officer covering one religious statue. The statue look like someone threw out the statue out of disrespect. A priest is covering the statue with a blanket. Officers are wearing uniform. I think we are on a movie set the three man are actors.
Isabella Perez (WHRHS)
It looks like the photo was taken in the 70s or 80s. The three men look to have found a statue of the Virgin Mary. Maybe it could’ve been stolen and dumped there and the three men found it and are using the blanket to cover it up to make it earlier to carry.
Lizzy (watchung hills )
In this picture I think That the cops are taking evidence from a crime scene. Since the statue is laying on the ground it could be from a church that was vandalized.
Marianna R (WHRHS)
In this photo, there are three police officers covering a statue. The cars and the officer's glasses seem outdated, so it was probably taken around the 80s. The statue is of Mary and could have been stolen or vandalised.
Ashley (WHRHS)
I think the police are covering the scene of a crime. It looks like they are covering a statue of Mary. The photo looks like it was taken in the 70’s or 80’s. The photo looks like it was taken in an abandoned field because of the graffiti.
Lovejot (Drexel Hill ,P.A)
I think someone threw out the religious statue on the highway side for disrespecting. Three mens are picking the statue. One is the Priest he was a covering the statue with the blanket. And other two are a police officers. One is doing his paperwork and what’s going on. The other police officer watching what is the Priest doing. The police officer wearing our uniforms but they don’t have guns. The Priest not wear a hand gloves they are not a detectives.
Mohamed (drexel Hill, PA)
Mohamed M. I see two officers the are investigating a statue. The first reason why I say this because someone has stole a religious statue which of course is a crime in the U.S.A so that why the policeoffice are looking for a suspect who has stole the statue. This thing happened in the time of 1980s. One of the policeoffice are corvel the statue so the two officers are looking the who is corvel the statue. The outher policeoffice who have the cliboard there is a paper on so he is the one who is writing the evidence.
Kylie (WHRHS)
In this photo, I think that there seems to be three men covering a statue of some sort. The cops could be using this as a price of evidence. This is most likely an older photo since it's black and white, maybe taken in the 60s or 70s.
Aniket Chatterjee (Whrhs)
This must have taken place during the 80’s or 90’s and a statue of Mary is vandalized
ethan comet (horton)
In this picture it looks like there is some sort of crime scene. Maybe the statue was stolen and drug somewhere. there are two police officers and what looks like an investigator. It is definitely not a modern picture, I can tell because of outfits and car.
Alex (New Jersey)
In this photo, there are two police officers covering a statue. The officers are dressed in a more older style, so it was probably taken a while ago. The statue might’ve been stolen, or maybe the church could’ve been abandoned and they were taking the statue.
Matthew (New Jersey)
Th cops that are present in the photo seem to be investigating a crime scene, where someone vandalized a church. There is graffiti on the building in the background, and one of the officers is covering a statue of possibly Mary, because it might have been tampered with.
Katelyn Comet (Hanover Horton )
It looks like they may be at a crime scene. I think the guy who is putting a blanket over the statute is doing that so his finger prints don't get on it. Maybe is was stolen an they are going to test it for finger prints. I also see graffiti in the background.
Vasilis (Watchung Hills NJ)
This seems like a normal police investigation, possibly from the 1970s. I say this because of the looking of the card & the uniforms.
Tina (WHRHS)
In the picture, a man (possibility another policeman) is covering up a statue that probably came from a church. In the background, two policemen are watching. This picture looks like it came from the 1960s, as the cars look like they came from that time period. There is also graffiti on a sign behind them. The statue probably got vandalized or stolen.
Teresa (Watchung Hills Regional High School)
This seems like a crime scene from a few decades ago, judging by the police officers and the cars. They are covering a statue in a blanket possibly to protect the evidence.
Anushka (WHRHS, NJ)
I think that this took place in the 1970-80s, because the cars are pretty old. The vandalism suggests that it might not be in the best neighborhood. The statue of mary also suggests that this took place in a religious setting. I think there was a sort if religious riot or something going on and the police are trying to contain it.
Jakob Comet (Horton)
This looks like it takes place in the 80's or late 90's. its some kind of criminal investigation. It seems like hes using the blanket possibly so he doesn't get finger prints on it. The virgin marry statue was probably stolen from a church or something. I see graphite so this is obviously in the city.
Mary Elias (Watchung Hills )
This picture portrays a crime scene where it apprard that a religious statue was stolen, and left on the side of a hallway by the side of a rundown building. The criminal may have left it there in order to get away quicker. It appears to be from the 1960’s based on the appearance of the cars, people, and color of the picture itself.
Julia (watchung hills)
looking at the old cars and police uniform, I think this picture is from the 50’s or 60’s. The statue of Mary was probably vandalized and the cops were investigating and found it. The towel or blanket they are putting over might be for protection or if they were trying to pick it up.
Cullen (Watching Hills Regional Highschool)
I believe that someone had stolen a religious statue and ditched it at the side of the road. The officers had found it and led the original owner to it so he could retrieve his property.
Michael (Watchung Hills)
It looks as if somebody vandalized the church. This picture most likely took place sometime around the 70s because of the car and the way they dress. The man and two police officers are covering a statue.
frank comet (horton)
What I see in this picture are three officers looking at the statue, with one of them about to cover it, of the Virgin Mary. I can also see that there are cars in the back of them. Judging by the appearance of the cars, it looks as if this was taken place somewhere in the late 1970's to 1990's. I think this happened after some kind of storm that could've possibly destroyed the place the statue was originally in and separated it from the building judging by the way the branches in a messy bunch. I think it is also taking place in New York because of the the badge on the officers arm saying New York.
Lauren Comet (Hanover, Michigan)
In the picture, I believe that 3 cops or detectives found this statue from a church that has been stolen on the highway or just a busy road. I think the statue is from a church because of the cross necklace in the hands. I think they are detectives because one has a clipboard and the other is looking really close as the last one is covering it like it is evidence and they need to move it. I think it is off a highway because there is a lot of cars in the background and there are street lights.
Madison (WHRHS)
This seems like it took place a long time ago. The cars and old time outfits set this back to early 1900s. They are covering a religious statue with a blanket. Someone might have vandalized her which is why she was taken down.
Christopher G. (WHRHS)
It appears as though their is a religious figure lying on the ground while a policeman covers it with a cloth. This picture was presumbley taken during the 60s or 70s because they are cars that are no longer manufactured. Someone most likely vandalized a religious site and the statue in the picture was knocked over or stolen then later dropped in the location shown in the picture.
Gina fiacco (Whrhs)
I think maybe there was a criminal act that occurred at a church and they are covering peices of evidence. I can tell it’s a church because the statue is holding rosery beads. I believe it was a while ago because of the cars in the back and the black and white coloring.
Vivian (Watchung Hills)
There are 3 police officers in the picture and they all look pretty concerned. The officer in the front is wrapping up a statue of a woman who looks like she is praying. This looks like there could have been a crime scene before the officers came and now they are going to investigate the religious statue. There is also vandalism/graffiti on the wall behind the officer. This picture was probably from the 50s or 60s because of the black and white and the style of cars.
Katerina (WHRHS)
I think this picture was from the 1950’s because of the cars unthreatening background. Also if you look closely the cops mustache is out of style now so one can tell it’s fromthr fifties. I think they are in an a bonded church that was broken into. They are probably trying to preserve a statue of Mary.
Lauren (Watchung Hills Regional High School)
This took place in the 60s or 70s by the look of the car in the background and the fact that the picture is in black and white. There are three police officers covering up a statue of Mary and a cross. The church or building that they are at looks abandoned due to the graffiti on the wall. It seems like they were looking for the statue and are recovering it now. This indicated that it was stolen.
Ryan Doherty (WHRHS)
The policeman is covering up some sort of religious statue. This may be because a church was vandalized. This was probably from the 60s or 70s judging by the car.
Shreya (WHRHS )
I think that this as an old picture because it is in black and white and the cars are older cars. They are covering a statue in respect. There is vandilism on the boards which is why I think the statue got vandalized and they are now covering it.
Ashlin Comet (Hanover-Horton )
I believe that the setting is a run down church or other religious building. I think this because of the statue with a cross on it. I believe it is run down because of the graffiti on the back wall. I also believe that someone might have tried to steal the statue because of the cop pictured. It looks like they are covering it in blankets for possible transportation. The grounds seem to be very overgrown and has an old car on the side of the building. There are two men pictured, one is obviously a cop but there is no indication of who the other man is.
Carson Comet (Hanover Horton Highschool )
I see 3 cops covering up a statue from what looks like from the church that maybe was stolen and it got dumped on the side of a highway and the cops just found it and I believe it takes place sometime in the late 1900’s because of how the cops are dressing and their cars in the background. It could've been a murder scene and the statute had something to do with it. There is graffiti on the sign behind the cops so it probably isn't a very great area.
Maxwell Comets (Hanover)
In this picture I can tell that this is taking place in a time no later than the 70's. The cars are older so that is why I say that. Also, the feeling I get from this picture is that it is a crime scene. There is a billboard that is covered in graffiti. There is a religious statue laying on the ground being covered like it is a murder scene. You can predict that is it stolen from a lawn or a church perhaps.
Jazlyncomet (Hanover Horton high school)
I think that these officers are at a crime scene. Not the kind where there is murder involved, mostly because this is a statue, but one where someone disturbed some property. I think that someone hurt this statue, and painted the building by it, but they got away. I think that maybe they got away. I think these cops are bring in the "evidence", some fingerprints on the statue or something.
Brinna Comet (Hanover Horton)
In this image, there are three police officers appearing to be covering some sort of religious statue. I think that before the picture was taken a statue was stolen. The criminal then left it on the ground after an escape. All the officers look like they are in deep thought which also makes me think it was stolen. The picture was probably taken in the '60s or '70s because of the cars in the background. The area that they are in looks abandoned and that makes me think that they are in a small town or city. On the sign behind them, there is graffiti which might mean they are in a high crime area. They are on the side of a highway around a sign which leads me to believe there was a criminal nearby that they are looking for and left this statue to try and get away faster. Perhaps after this image was taken they caught their criminal since it seems like there are not many people around for them to look through.
Noah S. Comet (Hanover )
In this picture, it looks like a crime scene where maybe an important statue of a woman with a cross necklace on praying was stolen during the 1960s based on the type of car in the background. There are a few cops who are observing the statue while a man in a trench coat is wrapping the statue in towels to pick it up and return it back to where it should belong. In the background, there is also a building with a bunch of graffiti paint on the side of it along with a few more older cars parked there.
Hughes, Christian (Cincinnati, Ohio)
I’d say the officers have been called when one dude who may have recovered a stolen statue from an arts museum.
Trent Comet (Hanover)
What I think is going on in this picture is the police are covering a statue of Mary with a blanket or some sort of sheet. I also think its some sort of an investigation because the police are investigating the scene. What makes me say this is because the police are bent down looking at the statue and the guy is covering her with a blanket. What I can also find is there is graphite on the sign above, which makes the investigation even more important.
anthony comet (hanover)
Whats going on in this picture is the statue of the virgin mary on the ground and some police man uncovering her? it looks to me like this happened a while ago due to the picture being in black and white and the kinds of uniforms the police are wearing also gives off an oldie vibe. What I think happened is someone dropped or placed a statue of the virgin Mary behind a sign most likely in a ditch off to the side of the road but what could be so bad about this that the police got involved?
CassieComet (hanover highschool)
In this picture I think that someone was destroying someone's tombstone and the police got called and are covering it so that other fingerprints can't get added. Hopefully by covering it and not adding more fingerprints they can trace the person who did it. I think it was on someone's tombstone because it is an angel holding her hands as if she is praying and the material of the object. Plus the angel is holding a cross necklace. The police look very concerned for the man covering the angel, making it seem that it was his family's tombstone this happened too.
Jeremy Comet (Hanover)
It looks like the authorities are recovering a statue from a theft or some act of vandalism. It must have been some sort of crime because the police are there. I noticed that the statue seemed relatively unharmed, yet they are wrapping it up as if it was something very precious and fragile. I also noticed that there seems to be a parking lot in the background, because of the amount of cars and the light post. I wonder how such a statue would have ended up by a parking lot.
Richard Comet (Hanover, Michigan)
In this picture, I see two police officer and a detective. The photo seems to be older, there are older cars and the officers glasses are an older set. The cars that are in the background look like they are possibly from the 80's. It seems to be that this was an abandoned statue, maybe it was stolen and just dumped out. The quality of this photo is not the greatest, but it is in black and white. This statue seems to be some kind of religious statue to. So maybe someone was in disbelief of the religion and tried getting rid of it. It could also be that the statue was worth money and was then stolen.
Shelby Comets (jackson michigan)
In this picture, I see two police officers and a medical examiner. The photo seems to be older because the photo is black and white and the police are wearing a really old pair of glasses, you can see an old cars which may seem they're in a junk yard. This statue is mother Mary and it was probably stolen and are probably covering it to protect it.
Abby Comet (Horton)
What I see in this photo is a couple of police officers, one covering up what seems like a Mother Mary Statue. It looks like they are maybe at a crime or murder scene and the statue may be some kind of stolen property from a house or a church. One officer is throwing a blanket over possibly to persevere it or to pick it up carefully without it breaking. Other information I might add is its possibly from the late 80s to the early 90s . I think this because of the car in the background and the clothing that they are wearing.
Vanesa Marquez (ASFG)
I think that this picture was taken in 1970’s and what is going on is that police officers found a saint and are carefully are lifting her to the car. Or my second claim is that police officers were doing random checks and they pulled over a man that had a big covered lump in his car and they asked him to take it out to see what it was. I say that the the police found her because they are covering her with care. The saint is on the dry ground in the road and in under a fabric which for the second claim could be used for proof that the man had covered the saint and is showing the police officers what was the lump they saw. Another thing I saw was that the police officer was holding a clipboard and it could be that he was jotting down what they found or making a report for why they pulled the man over. The reason for why I say about the second man not being a police officer is because he does not have nor a badge nor a uniformed hat. I notice fast moving cars in the background which could mean that they were in the freeway.
Ivie Chapman (Fannin Middle)
There are two cops and a investigator, they are covering up a statue of a nun. I think that the statue is part of an investigation, it looks like they are in a junkyard with a lot of old cars. Located on the side of the road because of the graffiti on what I am assuming road sign. I believe that this picture was taken in the 1980's or 90's because of the style of glassed that the police with the mustache is wearing.
Rachel (AOSE)
This photo is taken on the shoulder of a highway within the city of New York, if you zoom in and look closely at the patch on the right arm of the squatting officer you will see that it reads "Police Department City of New York". The graffitied object on the background is most likely a highway sign. the photo was most likely taken in the 1940s or 1950s due to the hubcaps on the car and the significant grain in the photo. Police usually do not wrap items in bedspreads so a call may have been placed to 911 or the local PD by a passing motorist who saw the statue covered by a bedspread and may have thought that the bedspread was covering a murder victim. Perhaps the statue had been stolen from a church then left on the shoulder of the highway.
Sadie P. (California)
It appears as though the police are investing the vandalism of a church. It is probably a fairly famous or valuable church, due to the number of police officers and the caution they are exercising. Their is a vandalized building in the background, which I assume is a church, because the police are gathering a statue of the virgin Mary.
Emanuel (port orchard)
*What do you see in this photograph? Police wrapping a nun statue like in a crime scene *What rules of photography can you apply to this photo? Changing from black and white to color *If this happened in your neighborhood - what do you think your reaction would be? I would watch what their doing
Adeline M (SKHS)
This photograph shows a “crime scene”. The Mother Mary statue was probably stolen from someone's house or a church, but the way the statue is laying on the ground and the man covering it with a blanket makes it appear more like a murder scene, although the man probably just wants to ensure the statue hasn't been broken or won't break once he picks it up. The photo seems like it might be from the 90s or late 80s as the glasses the policeman is wearing were the popular style then.
Xavier C (SKHS)
it is a murder or some form of paralysis but either way the person is screwed over now there is no safe way to put it for the appearance but the cross on the amulet bugs me there is something about it that seems....off in a very bad way i believe in demons aliens Bigfoot etc but this is something rather unnerving if it is a statue then there is something far more disturbing to it if it is THAT statue then its owners have died of unforeseen accidents car crash illness etc
Rachel (AOSE)
@Xavier C I don't see the person's feet but rather, a rectangular base.
Donavin B (SKHS)
I see 3 cops covering up a statue from what looks like from the church that maybe was stolen and it got dumped on the side of a highway and the cops just found it and I believe it takes place sometime in the late 1900’s because of how the cops are dressing and their cars in the background. I think this picture follows he black and white rule since it is black and white also it is an experimental picture. I would think what is going on because you normally don't see cops covering up a statue so I would be very interested.
Marissa (Port Orchard)
There are three police officers in the picture and a police car in the background. One of the officers is covering a religious statue with a blanket. The photo was taken in black and white, and based on the hairstyles of the officers and the car style, the photo was taken in the 80s. They were most likely looking for some leads on a case and found the statue and blanket. The rule of thirds can be applied to the photo because of the positions of the officers and statue. If this happened in my neighborhood, I would be a bit confused, but not too curious about it.
XD (SKHS)
What I see in the photo is Police officers covering up a statue of “Fortnite Player” Mary for a crime scene possibly. The rules of photography i see are rule of thirds. If this hapend in my neighborhood I would be like “Okay, Thats EPIK!”
Ms. Ziller's 6B class (Virginia)
We think it some type of crime scene because there are police officers and what looks like an investigator. It has to do with the statue of the Virgin Mary and it looks like they are either covering the statue or taking the blanket off. It seems to off the highway because we see a guardrail in the background and it might be a highway sign too with graffiti written on the back of the sign. We also think it was in the past because of the type of police cars and the picture is black and white.
Rachel (AOSE)
@Ms. Ziller's 6B class How do you know that it is a statue of the virgin Mary and not just of a nun?
maryjane hawkins (skhs)
In this picture i see police men covering up a doll with a blanket. The doll has a cross on and there is a car in the back which im guessing is the police mens car. Point of veiw. If this happened in my neighborhood i would just be weirded out but also just not look into it enough.
Tayler Dodge (Seattle Wa)
What do you see in this photo? I see a group of police officers either uncovering or covering a statue of what looks to be a woman . They seem very intrigued as to what is happening with and what happened to the statue. What rules of photography can you add to this photo? Rule of thirds? Point of view? If this occurred in your neighborhood what would your reaction be? My reaction would probably be confusion and surprise. I would want to know more about what happened.
Romeir (Wisconsin)
Looks like they are covering cleaing up a crime scene and are taking evidence into the police station
Autumn (glendale,wisconsin)
i think that its placed in the 1900's because of how its blacjk ajdn white the officer looks like hes from back back back in the day it also looks like there was a fire or something and the police uncoverd all the
Rahni (Glendale )
In my opinion First of all by looking at the picture it looks like it was taking in the late 1980s to early 90s by looking at the car in the back and the police officer that's crouching in the back . and I think that they were on a crime scene and they saw the nun and covered it up.I think it could have been used as a weapon .
Joshua H. (Milwaukee, WI)
I think that the Nun was on her way to Mass. She turned and saw Medusa and turned into a stone.
Owen (Glendale, Wisconsin)
The cops are taking the statue is being taken away by the cops. The cops are kneeling down by the statue and covering it in a blank. I don't see anything else that stands out.
Solomon White (Glendale Wi)
Somebody had knocked down a Statue in 1995.I say this because I see a police officer putting a cover around the statue and the other to police officer is watching the man wrap the statue
mirelsi (sms)
I think there trying to investigate something and they look worry about the statue
Bryan McCalley (smS)
In my opinion it looks like the setting/theme is in the “old days” (1900’s). This is shown by the black and white picture, old cars, and the way the officers uniforms look. It also seems to look like the officers are laying a Christmas blanket over the little statue, that represents a certain form of religion. There is also a fair amount of graffiti on the sign right next to it, which may prove to be a teenager prank of some sort. However, back in 1900’s there was a conflict between many people, in which many men and women disapproved of Catholicism. Based on all the information that I have, I believe I can safely infer that this is a crime scene.
Riley (Behind you)
In the picture there is two cops, I am guessing that they are at a crime scene. They are covering up something that looks like a statue from the accent period in time. Also it is in the 1900 because it is in black and white, there is also a lot of old cars in the back round. What makes me say all that is because I looked at the picture and examined it for about ten minutes, then I just thought about everything that is saw and then I came out with that. I could probably find more if the picture was more spread out.
Gustavo (SMS)
In this picture, I see two police officer and a detective. The photo seems to be older because the photo is black and white and the police are wearing a really old pair of glasses, you can see an old car it looks like the car is from the '80s. This statue seems to be like some kind of a religious statute because they are treating it very carefully.
Brayan (SMS)
I think the two police man are delivering a statue. or maybe there was a crime seen and they need the statue for evidence maybe it has finger prints or something. I think the picture is old because its in black and white and the old car in the back maybe its in the 90's or something.
Isabelle (pcs)
I'm thinking that it might be a crime seen or something and they're covering up the statue as evidence. Someone might have knocked it down or something. Or it's a religious issue
Calli (San Diego, California)
I believe the man covering the statue is a thief. He stole the statue from a museum. The cops pulled up behind him, the man not knowing. The man realizes there is a presence behind him but does not move. He just stands there frozen with terror. The man threatens the police. He still does not know they are the police. After this photo, they arrest hi for theft and assault to a police officer.
Shan (Sms)
I think that someone could have been driving and accidentally knocked down this religious statue. The officers could have gotten a police report on it. The statue could have belonged to a church. I can infer that the picture is old because it is in black and white.
Brianna (FCMS)
I think the picture is showing religion. The man looks as if he;s putting a blanket over a statue of a woman. Maybe the police were there because the statue was knocked over, at least that's what I think. The man is there because the statue probably has something to do with his religion and he wants to protect it so that no further damage can be done. I also think the police there because he saw the man putting a blanket on a statue and was just curious.
pain (ABC seaseme street )
well there are 2 police men in the back, and what looks like an investigator. the statue is knocked over and the investigator is covering up the statue with what looks like a quilt. there is a stick or pole in the ground beside the statue which could be a marker. it might be a crime scene because of the cars that dont have their lights on. because they dont look like their too happy. their is graffiti on the sign in the background. the ground looks like it is covered in briers. the people have coats on so it might be cold out. someone could have knocked it over so it could have been an accident.
yuli (sms)
A police officer was driving by the side of the street when he saw a statue that looked like hail Mary , he got off his car and looked at the statue and it was hail Mary.
Barydon (SMS)
In this picture there are 2 police and what looks like a detective and they are looking at an religion statue. The reason they are covering up the statue is because,It could have been a part of a crime scene and they could be looking at the details and stuff to see what happened. It looks like this was a little bit ago because the cars look like older cars and the picture is in black and white and the hats they are wearing are the old hats cops used to wear.
Brianna (SMS)
Based on what I see from this picture.I can tell it was a long time ago because the old cars, the picture is gray and the cops uniform is very old.I know the statue has to do with religion because it has a cross on it.I can infer that maybe the church filled a report about someone pushing down the statue. But yet again someone could have stole it from a church and dropped it off on the side of the road like to pull a prank.
Alphonzo (sms)
What I think that is going is that a group of people at night went down to a park or something and they started drawing and doing graffiti on the post board and the sculpture of god and that a couple of deputies and police officers saw it and was getting rid of it and was trying to get the people who did that.
Jimena (ASFG)
In this picture, there’s a group of policemen analysing, observing and investigating a spiritual statue. The clipboard that a policeman is grabbing demonstrates that they are investigating the statue on the floor. The man that is covering the sculpture proves that they are using it as evidence. It looks like they are in a road due to the isolated rural place. Also, the cars that are behind these men are old; as a result, the picture in black and white represents past times. I believe that this picture the aftermath of the Northern Ireland conflict. This conflict was an issue to end the discrimination against catholicism (1968-1998). The statue is laying on the floor so it seems like the people have an issue with this religion. As consequence, it looks like there was a problem with this religion.
tv (sms)
I think the police are covering up the statue because they found it on the ground and they don't want anyone to take it. or someone knocked it down and they are taking it back to the lab to check the fingerprint to see who did it.
Pablo (México)
I believe that in the photo it is trying to cover a virgen. I think this has a bigger meaning than it is showing. I think there was an accident on the street and the virgin happened to fall because some people were killed. This photo appears that it is taken in 19s. They are covering the virgin with a blanket so that people cannot see what really happen. I also noticed more police officers that are there respecting what is happening.
FIR (MeXiCo)
What’s going on in this picture is that three men, two that have police officer badges and one that doesn’t, are looking at the statue of a Virgin while the non-police guy is covering her in a piece of cloth. It is also visible that this picture was taken long time ago. I can realize that this is old because of the car that is in the back, which looks old, and also the fact that the picture was taken in black and white. I could also tell that the two guys that are on the back are police officers because the badges they have are the ones worn by police officers, even though one of them has more badges than the other. Something else I noticed from this picture is that the Virgin seems to have her eyes open and is looking above, which seems weird.
Dawson (USA)
Based on what I see from this picture. It looks like they are at a crime seen. Covering up a religion stachue maybe where someone push it down. This might have been on top of a church then throw ed off. Then the church called the cops to fill a report on it.It real looks like it might have been in the ground by the way the bottom looks. So someone might have puled it up. Well if I had a to read a paragraph on it .
Nick (USA)
Based on what is in the picture there was a statue on the side of the road and the cops thought it was a baby. Then they had to check it out to make sure it was not a baby. I say that because the cops have lifted the whit sheet on the statue and when they did that they saw the statue. Then they had to take the statue away from the side of the road. Then they were trying to figure out why that was put there. Then they had to throw it away . They did not ever figutre out what it was that they were looking at.

In a cold afternoon a detective and 2 cups are in the said of an empty road uncovering something to see what it is. Earlier that day someone who was driving and saw something covered by a blanket and alerted the police. They are making a report about what was under the blanket and they look interested/confuse about there discovery

Thank you for sharing your comments this morning, folks! I heard lots of attentive looking at details throughout the picture’s composition, and then conclusions being made from there. I will be signing off now, but continue to keep looking on your own! If you’re just joining us, observe the image and ask yourself “what’s going on here?” Remember to also read a couple of comments back to see if you agree or disagree with others’ claims. I heard agreements in a couple of your comments: @Carlos S. Rodriguez, @Thalia Lubian, @Javier Reina and @Arteaga cesar, all think the people here might have discovered stolen goods from a church. @Melanie Salas and @Thalia Lubian think the people might have thought at first the statue was a dead body. And some of you have specific thoughts about the setting - @Carlos S. Rodriguez and @Melany Tercero thinks the statue was found in an area recently burned by wildfire and @Osmany Palacios thinks this is set in a desert. The caption of the picture will be added on Thursday afternoon. Return to this page then and see how that extra information shapes your understanding of the image! For now, what more can we find?

1) guy covering a christian statue, blanket with statue, street light, graffiti, man that looks like a police officer (hat, badges), jackets, middle of nowhere, old cars 2) This probably happened a long time ago, there was a statue that 3 men found from a long time ago. The graffiti tells us that it happened in a poor area.

i feel what is going on in this picture is someone took this from a church and now they have either a preacher or a detective covering as if it is a fallen angel and the police men are probably there to find the thief and bring him to justice

The policeman look like they are very busy. In the picture it look like someone has stole a important statue in the town. What the policeman look like they are doing is investigating what happened to this statue, What they are thinking is that somebody ditched it. They have to cover it up that way no body can break it. The officer probley has the clip board that way he can observe it really close in person before it is run for finger prints. It looks like who ever took it don't like god, Because this was a worship statue. They need to find who did this that way they can go to jail. They need to know that this is wrong to steal, and it's a big thing not to seal anything in your life.

The policeman are on a very important investigation because the doll that someone stole was very important. The policeman need to find who stole the statue and get them in jail because this statue seems very important to someone and they probably want it back. The policeman are very careful when they find it so they do not break it.The policeman are very careful so they can do a finger print test to see who's finger print's but if more than one person touches it it will show more than you print. That person who owns it can call them and tell them that it is his and the other print is that person who took it.Somebody stole and then was going down the road and dropped it but I think that he did not know he dropped it.He was a very good at steeling so that is why he stole it.he is a very bad thief and needs to go to jail.He will go to jail as soon as we find him he will be in jail for about seven years. he does not need to get out for a longer time so he will being there for his whole life so a life sentence.

Four cars , three cops , a big sign with graffiti , dead trees , dry grass , a statue , cold morning One of the cops are uncovering the statue that was stolen from a church a month ago by criminals . The statue was property of a woman that donated it for the church in her community . The other two cops are waiting to see what is behind the blanket .
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Marlon Acosta, thank you for your comment this morning! It sounds like you've noted lots of details this morning, and you are thinking that a reveal of the statue is happening. You're also wondering about the history of the statue - what do you see that makes you say it might have been donated by a woman for a church?

Five cars, four cops, two blankets, a big billboard with graffiti, a sock, a bunch of dead trees, dried grass, a angel statue A detective and two police man are covering up a statue to return it to the local church. The statue was reported missing a week ago by the priest in the community church. This was a very special piece because was one of the first statue that the church ever had and it represented a nun that dedicated her life to religion. She was a very religious woman and she wanted her family to be like that but her family didn’t want to. The billboard has graffiti that meant that the place was a common place were criminal stuff happened very often. After weeks of searching the detective found the statue in an old abandon space were the grass and trees were all dried up and it was very bad. The statue was safety returned to the church

- Billboard, Virgin Mary statue, police officers, blanket, 92 Cadillac, desolate park, forest, clipboard, after a wild fire, gloomy afternoon.

Two police officers , a statue of Virgin Mary, three old cars ,a dirty abandoned place . a traffic sign with gratify and a forensic. After a robbery someone reported that they found the statue of the Virgin Mary that was theft, when the officers and the forensic came to see the stolen statue there was nobody near the statue but the statue actually was there.

A 1950 Car, three police offices, a piece of fabric, a statue, a street sign, a street lap, a piece of fabric. Sunday morning is cold outside the police department receive a call of a strange fabric laying in a desert highway on the grass and that it hiding a dead body. After five minutes police arrive to the crime scene they park they cars and they are getting prepare to see what it under the mysterious fabric. The first police officer that arrive go and take the fabric out and get surprise about what he just found is a statue it not a dead body they are happy about the finding and decide to take notes to investigate what could have happen and why the statue what in there. After a few minutes they find out that it was stolen from a church.

Marlon Perez (John A. Ferguson Senior High, Miami)
old image, classic cars, policemen wearing big sweaters, tall trees, graffiti vandalized signs, a statue of a women praying , dead grass, street lights Whats happening in the story from my perspective is that there was a robbery so they called the cops when the cops arrived they found the statue of a women in the floor then they went to one of the cars for some blankets to cover the statue to transport it to a safe place
Osmany Palacios (Ferguson Senior High School Miami)
The trees have no leafs,it is winter and they are in cold place.Police officer are in a desolated place.Christian statue is in a side of the road lying down. Someone burglarized a cemetery, church, or monastery and stole the statue as mockery. The police officials found the statue dumped on the side of a desolated road and are covering the statue to turn it back to the the place where was stolen from.
Melanie Salas (John A. Ferguson Senior High, Miami )
What I see is like an abandoned place, three police officers, old cars, a sign covered in graffiti, dead grass, its afternoon, cold, a statue of a virgin, a blanket, a sock, a lot of trees, empty road, street lamp post. What's happening is that someone must have called the police thinking it was a dead body . Minutes later two police officers and the chief got there to see what was really happening to only find out it was the statue of a virgin covered up with a blanket

-A dirty blanket, old cars on the street, some trees without leaves ,dry grass,a cop,a billboard, rosary, medals, virgin Guadalupe statue , a clean clipboard, an investigator, street lights. In one of the most dangerous cities, there was a new case to solve, a statue that was stolen the last night was on one side of the principal road of that city, in an unclean zone with dry grass around it, that statue has a huge value and was in the museum of the city for that reason the robbers tried to stole it, but they couldn't finish their job because the cops , for that reason they left the statue there.

A statue, officers, a cold-looking place, a special type of officer, old cars, a vandalized sign, a lot of sticks on the ground, a blanket. There is a group of officers and a detective investigating a blanket covering something thrown on the side of the rode and the detective is taking the blanket off, revealing a statue, and they are investigating the blanket because it is in a vandalized zone, represented by the sing with graffitis.

What I see on the picture is an abandoned farm ,two police officers , virgin statue ,dried up trees ,some old cars , a forensic scientist , street light , a blanket . Whats going on is that there was a thief trying to steal the virgin statue so someone around saw them and called the police so when the police got there the thief left and left the statue , so the forensic scientist covered up the statue to check for any fingerprints that might lead to the chief .
Melany Tercero (Ferguson High School Miami.)
It took place in 1952 because the police cars are old. Two cops, religious statue. The saint is not in a church or at a house. The saint is in a abanduned place. The grass look dry, like burn. What happened was that the religious statue was stolen from a church and was abandoned by the thieves because the police was chasing the thieves and they drop the saint in to the floor.
Arteaga cesar, (John A Ferguson Senior high)
Ok! Te first thing that takes our attention is the guy (that is not a cop because his clothes are different than the others behind) covering the statue. Then we see a traffic sing and cars on a road, a ligth pole, it means that they are in a highway. At the back on the left corner of the picture there is a car parked on the land and looking at the police car behind the cops, that car is property of the guy covering the statue. The statue is clean, so somebody leave it there recently. Putting everything together, the statue is part of a robbery! Cops find the object on a highway and the guy nearest to the statue is a detective using the mantle to don't contaminate the scene.

In this picture I can see a lot of cars, three policeman, a statue, an old blanket, some trees in the back, a street light and a sign. One day an statue from a recognized church got stolen and no one was able to find it. Days past by and the statue was still lost. In a normal day at the police station three policeman were chosen randomly to patrol a neighborhood. They were making they routine and everything seems normal until they see a blanket covering something that looks like a dead body and they approach to the object. In surprise there wasn't any dead body it was the stolen statue from the past week that no one had found. They take it to the police station as evidence of the crime.
Kaelan Thornhill ( Ferguson high school Miami)
I see is a statue, three police officers, and cars. Setting: It's winter, there on a road or on a high way, also takes place in the 1980's. Story: I believe it takes place in the 1980's. Because, it has an old timely feeling also, the reason why I think it takes place in the 80's is because there was an old photographer that took pictures of police crimes scenes and sell it to reporters.
Alexander Pacheco Ferguson senior high (Miami)
2 police officers, highway, abandoned place, old cars, people in the back, researcher, white statue with cross, written signs, burned grass
Noelle Morales (Mis Tiptons class NRMS)
There are three police men looking a if they are trying to cover up a crime scene. There seems to be more people in the background with all of the cars in the back. This seems to be a serious matter because the ARE serious and are trying to cover up what seems to be a piece of evidence that would benefit an investigation. This location may be abandoned and run down because of all the plantation that seems to be spreading. Maybe this was the sight of a church or some religious place considering the statue that appears to be the virgin Mary. They might even be getting rid of old items found in an abandoned place for safety purposes for the residence. Maybe this was a cause of a natural disaster. Caption- Police cover up disaster in Kansas after a major tornado hit church.
Ware (In Ms. Tiptons Class)
It appears to be placed in the time frame of the 1970s-1980s. This is because of the car models in the background and the fashion of the police uniform. They are behind a road-side sign that is covered with graffiti with the dead plants around them leading me to conclude that it is mid autumn or the beginning of winter. The man covering the religious statue seems to be covering it with a festive blanket. I believe that the reason they are covering this statue is because they are transporting it after someone had dumped it at the side of the road. The police are there because someone may have called saying that there was a body when in actuality it was the statue. The man covering it is the priest of the nearby church.
Lauren L. (Mrs. Tipton's Class)
In the picture I see cops covering up what looks like a statue. I think that the cops are covering up the statue because it brings bad luck to the city hat they live in. The 2nd cop appears to have a serious or angry face so I think he is "mad" at the statue. The second police also has something in his hand which could potentially be another statue. Since the police has something in his hand, it could be another statue. With the statues, they could take them to a different location, perhaps a church. The billboard has graffiti on it which could represent a crime scene. The state could be evidence left behind from the crime that was committed.
Brenden (in Mrs. Tipton's Class)
This picture depicts three police officers investigating an angel statue. This leads me to believe that the setting may have been a scene of crime. There is graffiti in the background, which may mean that this took place in an urban area. The cars in the back seem to be older models, and the picture is in black and white. This event occurred on what looks like the side of a highway. The statue appears to be holding a rosary, implying that the statue has come from a religious facility. I think that it might have been a hate crime due to the fact that religion is a controversial topic, especially in the past. This is an act of persecution of Catholics in the U.S.
Bethany kovanda (nrms)
someone was trying to steal the statue, which could have been part of a grave . the police might be trying to figure out what happened and they may be covering up the statue because it could trigger someone or they are trying to keep as much evidence on it (fingerprints, skin cells, etc) for further investigation later on.
Isabella (Mrs. Tipton's class)
In this picture there are two police officers looking at a spiritual statue and there is a man covering the statue. I think that the statue had been moving around in different areas and the police were looking for it, they finally found the statue on the side of the road. When they found the statue they covered it up hoping it would not move any where else until they could look into it some more.
Erin (Mrs. Tiptons Class NRMS )
You can observe in the picture a statue of a figure holding a rosary , so you can assume that it is a religious object. It seems to be important due to the officers of higher rank and the number of officers surrounding it. It looks like it had been stolen and hidden by the thief by that blanket that they are pulling off.
Gabby (NRMS)
The man covering the statue for religious purposes, and this symbolizes it.The police officers are taking notes because they think something interesting is going on beside a roadway. It may be during the winter time somewhere around Christmas, in the late 70's. The police officers question the man covering the statue. They think this man might be up to something, like covering a crime scene and trying to disguise himself.
deonna. (mrs.tiptons class.)
in this picture there are three officers. one of them is covering something up, while the other officer is looking at him. to me it looks like they are investigating a crime. there is a car in the back. which is probably theres. they look like they are in a forest that was probably on fire or it was just dry. the officers are covering up a statue. which is probably a statue that was part of a crime. and that is evidence to catch the person.
Favian Lopez (Ferguson High School Miami)
What I see in the picture is a statue saint, two cops, police cars that are very old and the setting of the image looks like from 1952. What is happening is that there was a robbery at a church, and they took a saint that was worth a lot of money. The people that took the saint tried to hide it to not get caught and go to jail. The cops found the saint and they are investigating the case. They are going to bring detectives to get the finger prints.
Iraily Torres, Ferguson Senior High (Miami, FL )
polices officer old cars signals with paint blanket to cover the statue statue on the grass necklace on the statue investigator trying to see what going on grass What going on in this picture is that someone throw to the grass a statue and the investigator are trying to picking up with a blanket, so that they don't touch or mistreat more than what has been already.
Villanueva (US)
In this picture there is a statue of what looks like religious relation and it is lying on the ground where two policemen are covering it up. I believe that is laying there because it was part of a heist. Maybe the statue was of some grand value and as it was being stolen, while escaping, the robbers fumbled it and ran away. They are covering it so it does not get any more damaged and for evidence.
Eva Boyle (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, I see three police officers at what looks like the side of a highway. There are many cars in the background and they look like they are not moving that fast. There may have been an accident, and a car may have hit a statue of Mary. This would be why there are three police at the site, and why the cars in the background were not going fast. The men are packing up the Mary statue because it may have been dedicated to someone, and after it was hit in the accident, the police are returning it to whoever it belongs to. This photo was also taken some time around 1970, because it is in black and white and the cars in the background are very old models.
Kevin (Mrs. Tiptons Class)
This picture seems that a crime must have happened and there probably a body behind the statue because the man is covering it up. I think it was a pert of a crime because there are police officers and they also have a clip board in which they could have a list for stolen items. They could be covering it up so when they carry it they don`t get their fingerprints on it. I think the two police Officers found it and called for . it ti be picked up.
Luis Bohorquez (John A. Ferguson Senior High, Miami)
What i see on the picture is the police of New York, one of the cops its a high rank sheriff, the other one a detective, with and old blanket, a statue of The Virgin Mary, a lot of cars, an empty road, an advertising panel with a lot of graffiti. What is happening on the picture is that around the 1970 Mafia organized group from New York was dismantled by the police, and the members from the gang throw the statue and other valuable paints that they have stolen before so the police doesn't have any evidence against them, but at the end the police department found the statue on the side of an empty road
Ethan (Texas)
In the picture we see two cops as we can tell by the badges and uniforms. We also see someone who may be a CSI based on the fact that he is the one actually interacting with the statue. I believe the time period to be the 70s because of the cars we see in the background. My theory is that they arrived after they got a call about something in the area. Then the CSI started to investigate around the area. He saw the statue on the ground and started to wrap towels and blankets around it so they could either set it back up or take it back where it came from.
sera (nrms)
I think that a person was driving along and they saw a statue, and they called the police. The police investigated and notice something strange on it. Like scratches at an opening at the back and decided to take it back to the station and examine it there. I believe that this was picture was taken in the 70's or early 80's based on the cars in the back and the mustaches that the policemen have. The road is also in a run down sort of town or area because of the graffiti. It was brought to the station and in that compartment was a whole lot of gold jewelry. The police think that it could be cursed because why would someone drop that off?
Alyssa M (Texas )
In this image, there are three police officers appearing to be covering some sort of religious statue. I think that perhaps before the picture was taken a statue was stolen.
Selene (USA)
In the provided image the observations I made all began with one thing, the statue. The shown statue is a figure of Mary and she is holding a cross in her hands. In the picture, I also notised two police officers, one kneeling behind the statue and one standing a lenghth away and gazing at the action before them. Not only are there two police officers but a man that appers to be covering the statue. Behind the people and statue, there is what appers to be a road sighn with vandalism covering its surface. If I were to make an inferance as to how this all began I would suspect a robbery took place and the thief decided to throw the statue and leave it. This inferance would exsplain the officers and would very much be a cause for investigation.
Citlaly (SMS)
I think they are covering a statue because it could be valuable, priceless, & important that they just wanted to hide it so no one would try to steal it. My other guess is that the statue was already stolen or is part of a crime. They are using a blanket to cover and carry it without adding their fingerprints on the object. My questions for this picture are: What could have really happened to the statue? And what do they really need the blanket for?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Several of you are looking at how the people are interacting with the statue in the foreground and are forming diverse opinions. Some of you think a crime might have occurred here ... @noah thinks the setting looks abandoned, and might have been where the crime took place. @Nate thinks the blanket might contain useful evidence, like fingerprints, that the people in uniforms might want to preserve. @Matthew Marcinko and @Darrell think this was misreported as a dead body, which the uniformed people discovered to be a statue when they uncovered it. Others of you don't imagine a crime happened here, and that the people might be doing something else instead... @Sierra agrees with @Corbin, who thinks the officers might just be protecting the statue while they relocate it. If you're just joining us this morning, what do you think might be going on here? And what do you see that makes you say that? Feel free to reply to others' comments to let them know if you agree or disagree!
Rafael (Mrs.Tiptons class)
Based on what i see, there is older cars in the background and graffiti, so i know its in the 19 century. Also one of the police officers has an older pair of glasses so i think this image takeplace in 1985.It looks like the men are recovering an angel (looks like the virgin mary)so im thinking the man is christan. Since there is police officers i think one or a group of people threw the angel. The man called the police to get our picture.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Rafael, I hear you and @Keegan Martin wondering about the setting of this image. You both are drawing from evidence you see in the background - like the cars - to inform you as to what year it might be. @Rafael, you also bring up the specific detail of the style of the glasses to conclude that this might be set in the mid-80s’, and @Keegan Martin, you note the bare trees and heavy jackets to conclude it might be set in winter. Let’s keep up the close-looking! What more can we find?
Keegan Martin (NRMS)
In this picture you see officers either uncovering or covering a statue. There is graffiti on a sign by the statue. I believe that this picture is quite old because of the style of cars, and the picture is in black and white. I think that the statue might have been stolen and moved somewhere, hidden under a blanket. I think this because there are officers there, meaning a crime is committed or is suspected. The picture was likely taken in the winter because of the bare trees and the jackets. The guy in the front doesn't seem to be a cop because he isn't wearing a proper uniform like the others, he may have been a witness to something?
Ryan (SMS)
There is a lady, that she is very active in her church and a strong believer. But one day she was walking home from church and she saw a lady with snakes as hair. She turn around and ran but she was to slow she had got hit with one of the strong gamma rays that turned her into a stone statue. She looked at her as her feet turned to stone then her legs then her arms then her shoulders then her head then she was gone in to stone but she would never be see again. Until now, she was so happy she was trying to break the stone. But she could not she was there but the police thought that she was just a stone statue. So they handled her with care taking her back to the church. She will never not be seen in church again. She will never leave the church again.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Ryan - thank you for your comment this morning! I am hearing you thinking of a narrative, or story, for this image. You are possibly referencing the Greek myth of Medusa, which tells of a woman with snakes for hair who has the power to turn people to stone. I'd love to know more about this story - what do you see in the picture that makes you say the woman (who's now a statue) might have been a devoted churchgoer?
Christian Rodriguez (Miami,John A. Ferguson High school)
There is a statue. It was in the floor of a public park. They are in Chicago. It is very cold. There are officers using jackets. There are many cars. Some officers in Chicago were passing by a public park and they suddenly see a statue laying down in the floor. This officers call the station and ask if there had been a case of any stolen or missing statue. The office confirmed that the statue was stolen and the officers got a blanket they had in the car and covered the statue so they could take it to the station.
SarahValdez (Tx)
a couple of cops and a detective are most likely investigating a statue that is of evidence to a tragic event, perhaps there are rumors of the statue being cursed. I would infer this because the statue is of a woman most likely praying and holding rosary beads. I would associate this with Catholicism and when I see cops around an object such as this my mind tends to think of the supernatural.
Chris R. (Mrs. Tipton Class room)
well i say that the priest covering the little statue which has to do something with the christian church because of the cross that the statue is holding. The cops are there to help make sure that nobody gets close to it and the priest is I'll say taking it to the church to probably get it back because it might be cursed so he has to bless it

The policemen or a workforce are covering up a what looks like an important statue, I think they are covering it up because they are going to get it transported to a place to get it fixed encase it got cracked or chipped. There are cars in the background and a billboard.
Kamren maho (Nevada)
I think that this could be a movie shot from a old movie because the cars do not look new and it is in black and white. I also think a person could have been vandalized the place because there is spray paint on the sign and someone thought the statue was a dead body and called the police.
Mr. Schumann's Class (Beach MS)
We feel this is from a time before color pictures, around 1960's. Can't tell where the police officer is from b/c the patch on his shoulder is blurry. We think they are covering up the statue to protect any fingerprints that could be on it. The statue was dumped after it was stolen.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to this week's WGOITP, @Mr. Schumann's Class! We so appreciate hearing your class's thoughts on today's image. It sounds like you are first struck by clues that might tell you about the setting of this image. You're concluding it's set in the 1960s because of the quality of the photo, and you're looking for details in the police officer's shoulder patch which might tell us their location. You're also wondering about the statue in the foreground, imagining the officers might be trying to protect it as evidence after someone stole it. Let's return to the image and continue to look - what do you see that makes you say this statue might have been stolen and then dumped? Keep up the great close-looking!
Matthew Marcinko (Palisade Glacier High School)
I believe that this is a police officer approaching an already covered statue. I think the image was taken was when the police officer pulled up the blanket on top of it to uncover a statue (maybe it was a false reporting of a dead body). I say this because the way the blanket is bunched up at the base of the statue, it looks like he is pulling it up as well as the motion blur suggests that he's not laying it down.
Anson Law (Los Angeles, California)
Maybe the people are covering the statue up to get it away from any criminals considering that statues probably meant that its worth some moolah. They probably have the military cover the area to see no one surrounding it.
Faith (PGHS)
I think someone stole the statue and left it on the side of the road and officers are covering it to keep it from getting damaged
Anson Law (Los Angeles, California)
Then why would they leave it if they stole the statue, they must have some intention of stealing it. What also doesn't make sense is the people trying not to damage it. Wouldn't they just recover it from them?
Mike (Ohio )
@Anson Law So true
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you for starting a conversation here! It sounds like @Faith is wondering about the backstory to the statue as well as what role the officers are currently playing. @Anson Law, it sounds like you have some questions about this. I hear you wondering about the specific setting - why the thieves would leave it on the side of the road, as @Faith suggests. You both have thoughts about what the people are doing - @Faith, what do you see that makes you say they might be covering it to keep it from being damaged? @Anson Law, what do you see that makes you say they might just be trying to recover it?
Nate (PGHS)
I think that it was a robbery and the cops were picking up the evidence with a blanket in a posibility of dusting for prints.
Darrell (California)
I think they thought it was a dead body as the blanket looks dirty and old meaning it was probably on the statue for awhile before the cops got there and plus there seems to be multiple cars there and they call in that many unless it were something serious so it couldn't be because it was a stolen object.
Ware (In Ms. Tiptons Class)
@Darrell This is a very plausible theory and it makes perfect sense. I agree with this completely, you have spoken my mind.
Dillon (PGHS)
I think someone has stolen this statue and dumped it on the side of the road, one officer is covering it with blankets to make sure it doesn't get damaged anymore than it already has. The vehicles seem to be older types so I'm thinking this isn't recent.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Dillon, welcome to this morning's conversation. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us today! It sounds like you agree with @Rob, who thinks someone might have stolen the statue. You also both agree that the figures might be officers who are investigating this possible crime. Looking back to the image for evidence, what do you see that makes you say this statue might previously have been stolen?
Rob (Palisade Glacier High)
I think that someone stole the statue and the officers are trying to figure out who did it so they're going to take it back and look for clues.
Novahvee (PGHS)
@Rob I feel like they're over exaggerating, they are acting like it's a dead body with all them policemen. It's not a episode of Scooby Doo, why all them cops out there like that?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
I appreciate seeing this conversation, started with your reply, @Novahvee! @Rob, it sounds like you're noting the presence of people who you think could be police officers, and so you're thinking this is an investigation. @Novahvee - you agree with @Rob these are police officers, and you sound shocked to see so many of them. You're referencing the crime-solving, mystery-based cartoon Scooby Doo here. Could you tell us more? What do you see that makes you compare this to that cartoon?
Ms. Ziller's 6A class (Colonial Breach, Virginia)

@Ms. Ziller's 6A class - welcome to this morning's conversation! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I hear you paying attention to the identity of the figures - you're wondering if they are a detective and police officers - and that they might be in the middle of an investigation. It sounds like you're also noting the quality of the image - that it is in black and white - and wondering if that might be significant. Returning to the image, what do you see that makes you say they might be investigating something to do with the statue? And let's continue to look! What more can we find?

In this picture there are two police officers and a crime investigator. The crime investigator looks he uncovering a statue. This also looks like a crime scene where there is a Mary statue in the ground. In the background there are old cars.
Ava (AOSE)
This picture shows a man putting a blanket over a statue with two policemen in the back. I think the statue was stolen from a church and they are covering it in blanket to protect it when they return it. The policemen are probably looking for clues so they can find out who stole the statue.

@Ava I would agree with this 100%. This is exactly what I was thinking, although I was thinking they could be taking the blanket off instead of on.

In this picture there is a man covering up a statue of the Virgin Mary. I think that someone vandalized the statue and knocked it over so the police came to investigate what happened. They are covering up the statue so the weather doesn't damage it while they wait for someone to come and put it back up.
Hunter (Ottawa, ON)
I think in this photo there are police from New York the State investigating a murder and mistake a statue for a body. It’s in New York because on the shield it says New York. There the police because they have a badge on. For the guy uncovering the statue is a think a detective because he doesn’t have any badges like the policemen. If you look at the way his hands are positioned it appears that he’s uncovering the blanket.
Ava (AOSE)
@Hunter Way to go! I love how you made claims and supported them with details you noticed in the picture.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Hunter, thank you for sharing your thoughts today, and @Ava, thanks for your enthusiasm. I so appreciate your support and encouragement of @Hunter's hard work! @Hunter, it sounds like you're imagining that these figures were not expecting to find a statue here. Instead, you're proposing that they thought they might find a body. You've also drawn our attention to a minute detail - the position of the hands of the figure in the foreground - and you're wondering if he is taking the blanket off instead of laying it on. What do you see that makes you say these uniformed figures might have mistaken the statue for a body in a murder case?
Claire (AOSE)
This picture depicts a man covering a statue of the Virgin Mary with a blanket. I suspect it to be the Virgin Mary because of the rossary in her hand and her clothing. There are two police men behind him watching over him. They seem to be on the side of a main road becuase there is a sign besides the man covering the statue and there is a gaurdrail across the road. The man could be covering the statue in the place of a car accident in hope that the Virgin Mary will bring the dead peace. In addition, the police could be there investigating the accident and watching over the man holding the blanket.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Claire, welcome to this morning's conversation! It sounds like you're wondering if the statue might represent a larger idea - you're wondering if this might be a symbol or marker for those who died in a car accident. I'd love to know more! What do you see that makes you say that they are placing the statue here for that symbolic reason?
Emma (AOSE)
In this picture, there appears to be statue of a saint (or some kind of martyr, due to the rosary in its hand) lying on the ground. There is a man who appears to be covering it up, and there are police officers who watching him. The officer on the left is holding a clipboard, which means he could be taking notes on whatever situation is happening. It could be that the statue was defiled and knocked over, since there are also signs of graffiti art in the picture (graffiti art is vandalism, a form of crime, which would explain why the cops are there.
Christina (AOSE)
In this picture, some policemen discovered a statue, which looks like it could have been stolen and/or vandalized. I can tell this because the statue is on its side in the grass, instead of somewhere where it can be worshiped. Yes, a statue can be placed in a field, but this field is definitely not a place of worship, this can be showed through the sign behind the statue with graffiti on it. The policemen could be covering it up because of how holy a statue of Mary is. They are treating the statue with as much respect they would show to a human being.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thanks, @Christina, for your comment today! You sound particularly struck by the juxtaposition in this image - in other words, you are noting that this statue might often require respect or worship, but that its current context does not seem very respectful. I hear you focusing on how the figures are treating this statue. What do you see that makes you say they are treating it with as much respect as a human being?
Desean (Johnson)
i can see that the two police officers are putting the blanket over the statue of marry like they would a body but i belive that the men are trying to be nice or somthing like that and not touch the statue or there covering thee statue so it wont get damaged until they have somewhere to move it
Naji (Nicolet high school)
police are investigating a statue that was left on the side of the street and wondering where it come from and how did it get there. I think the reason they stopped is because they thought it was a body because it was covered up and the sheriff uncovered the statue and i say that because i see police officers and one police have a clip board and the sheriff is holding a cover. i think it was during the time period of 1970 or 1990.
Houston Walton (milwaukee wi )
i think its was a robbery and the police officers are not trying to touch stuff so they have the blanket to pick things
Ava (AOSE)
@Houston Walton Interesting idea. I didn't think of a robbery taking place. What other claims can you make based on what you see in the picture?
Mr Franke's 4th Grade (Eagle Rock El. LA, CA)
Good morning, WGOITP! It's been a few weeks! My class began immediately creating a narrative around the statue of the Virgin Mary and how it got to the side of the road. We think it may have been stolen from a church. We say that because statues of the Virgin Mary are almost always in a church. We think that the officers are investigating this stolen statue because the middle one has a clipboard, and they appear to be uncovering the statue. We feel that it was wrapped by thieves, who then tossed it by the side of the road. We wonder if the officers were expecting a human in the tarp or blanket. We also think this happened many decades ago and we say that because of the style of cars, the glasses and clothes they are wearing, and the fact that the picture is black and white...

Welcome back, @Mr Franke's 4th Grade! Thank you for joining the conversation and for sharing your thoughts with us! It sounds like you all are particularly struck by the juxtaposition of the religious statue with its non-religious setting, wondering about the potential reason for it being in such a place. I also hear you agreeing with @skylar, who thinks these figures (who you think might be police) are in the process of uncovering the statue. You're also interested in what happened before this moment - perhaps thieves wrapped it up, like @NHJ imagined, and that maybe the officers had a different expectation of what they might find - as well as the time period of this picture. What do you see that makes you say the officers might have been expecting something else in the tarp or blanket? And what more can we find? Keep up the great close-looking!
alina (milwaukee, Wi)
In this picture, there is two policemen's and a guy who looks like he's covering a statue. The two policemen's looks like they were taking notes because one of the guy's is holding a clipboard. The setting looks like its in an abandoned place because in the background there's a building with drawings on it.
Taelor Klein (Nicolet Wisconsin)
In this picture that The New York Times put up today, its looks like Police people found out that a statue fell and is on the ground. They have a blanket that they are trying to put over it. I think they are going that, because it might break if they us their bare hands. I can also see that its black and white picture. Plus, it also looks like it was in a bad area.
NHJ (Glendale )
That someone trying to stealing Mary and they left her on the street cover up her so she cant get messed up
skylar (millwaukee )
the policemen are uncovering a stolen statue from a local church. the three policemen have found the statue on the side of the freeway. from the look of the cars and outfits of the police the photo was taken in the 70's or 80'.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
I hear several folks looking at one part of the image in particular. @Madhva and @Isha think the figures are uncovering the statue, and in contrast, @Bella.T and @Grace think they are covering it up. What do you think? And what do you see that makes you say that?
C.Marie (Glendale, Wisconsin )
I think that the police/detectives found a body. It looks like they are investigating what it is and who it is. I see that there is something on the ground that might be part of a crime or something that is bad. The police/detectives in this look old because the police these days do not look like this. It looks like a statue that might have a dead body under it. They might just be hiding the body so we can't see it.
Emma (AOSE)
@C.Marie What makes you think that it is a body they are investigating? If it is, are there any signs of what caused his/her death?
JaMaRi (GlenDale)
This a police officer in a tv show and is investigating what happend to the statute. There is two cars in the picture. This could be old because it is in black in white.
Emma (AOSE)
@JaMaRi What makes you think that this is set in a tv show? Does it look staged?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Emma is noting a unique idea in @JaMaRi's comment that we haven't heard very much in today's conversation - wondering if this is on the set of a TV show. @Emma even used the word 'staged' to describe that this might be a fictional event. What do you see that makes you say it might be on a TV show, or staged?
Madhav (New Jersey)
There is a man and two police officers uncovering a statue. I think this because the man uncovered a statue that looks like Mary which the police officers think it was stolen. There is also a building nearby with drawings and letters on it. There are even cars in the background.
Bella.T (AOSE)
In this picture, there seems to be a man covering up a statue. The two policemen are observing the actions of the man and are possibly taking notes of it. I suspect that they are taking notes because of the clipboard one man is holding. The statue being covered looks old and could possibly be of a saint. I believe it is a saint because of the rosary the statue is holding. The place that they are at seems to be abandoned. What leads me to believe this, is the graffiti on the billboards and the dead grass surrounding it. This picture is not a recent photo. I can tell because it is In black and white and because the police uniforms look old fashioned.
Evan (Frontier middle school)
this is obviously the annual gathering of the gamers in Montana. they are covering the epic statue of victory roalye. the man slav squating is pretty savage tho over there looking like paulblart bruh
John (Maryland)
i believe that what is happening is that... uhh.... no clue
Grace (aose)
There are are two policemen and one is covering a statue of the Virgin Mary. They seem to be on the side of a road because there is the back of a sign and a car behind them. They might be laying the virgin Mary where someone may have gotten in a car accident and died. A similar act is done with crosses at the location where the accident occurred. The virgin Mary is placed there for religious purposes and is covered so she is not disturbed by the public. If she is covered it brings less attention to it.
Isha (AOSE)
This photo is taken somewhere in New York CIty. One of the police officer's sleeve has a NYPD patch. It is one of the boroughs such as Queens, or Brooklyn, but it is definetly not Manhattan. Manhattan would have had larger building and more infastructure than the surrounding boroughs. There are three men pictured. There is a Mary statue laying on its side. The man to the left is lifting the blanket that was covering the Mary statue. It is unclear wether or not he is a police officer due to the lack of markings on his jacker. They could have been looking for the statue and have finally found it. The man in the center is a police officer. He is kneeling and has a clipboard. The clipboard was probaly used to record evidence. The man on the right is standing there in shock looking over the statue. There is also a shred of fabric by the man's feet. There is also vandalism on the walls, which probaly means that its a rough area. The cars mean that this photo was probaly taken in the 50's or 60's.
Christina (AOSE)
@Isha how do you know that this is in New York.
Isha (AOSE)
@Christina One of the officers has a NYPD patch, so it can be inferred that this photo is taken in NYC. Thanks for the band-aid

Miranda L (Mexico)
In this picture, a religious statue is being covered in blankets by officials because it was laying in the middle of the highway. I can infer it was strange for the policeman's to see this statue there because of their curious looks into it. It was probably used as piece of evidence in a case. I can infer this picture was taken a long time ago because the cars in the background look old and because the picture in black and white. Furthermore, the picture is taken somewhere in the United States in winter season because of the dry trees.
Claire (AOSE)
@Miranda L What makes you think the policemen are using the statue as part of an investigation?
Carolina (mx)
This picture is showing us a statue that is being covered up with a blanket by some policemen. There are three policemen observing the process while one of them is actually covering the statue. The statue that is being covered is the Virgin Mary. This statue looks old and very wasted. Also, the place that they are located looks dangerous and abandoned. In the back, you can see that the sign is all full of graffiti. So I infer that they are doing some research of the area may be in that area there was a house and the things got stoles. Also maybe the virgin was stolen or a truck was passing by and threw or the virgin fell out of the pickup. If we look carefully at one of the officers one of them has a notepad to write so maybe they are making an intense investigation. Also, they may be collecting evidence of a crime scene because the road is all empty and this crime scene may have happened at the rural. There aren’t a lot of constructions and buildings.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Carolina, thank you for sharing your thoughts this morning! I am hearing you use lots of adjectives in your comment, calling our attention to details in the image and describing the nature of the scene. Perhaps we can focus on your description of the statue in the foreground - what do you see that makes you say it looks old or wasted? Keep up the good close-looking!
IA (Mexico)
I think that some policemen from New York are going through an investigation and they found some evidence, being the religious figure. I can tell they are from New York because of the badges on their uniforms. Also, one of the policemen is holding a clipboard, which maybe symbolizes he is taking notes of all the evidence they are finding. Not only that, but the policemen seem surprised as if they were not expecting what they found. Finally, it seems like they are in the middle of a road or a highway.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Welcome to this morning's conversation, @IA. It sounds as though you are noticing details about this image and then making conclusions based on those details. You're observing their uniforms, the items they're holding, and even their facial expressions. Let's keep looking! What more can we find?
Diego Padilla (Mexico)
I think this is a picture of some police that saw this and thought it was a person wrapped in a blanket but when they saw more closely it was only a religious statue. By the police officer badge in his shoulder we know that this was in New York and by the quality of the photo I think this was around 1990. I think maybe this was an act of someone disposing of “garbage” for him or a act of hatred against chrisianity.
JP (Mexico)
In this picture, three policemen are taking a stolen art piece from a crime scene. This picture shows many things that support my claim. The first one is that it is evident that it is a crime scene or that there was some criminal activity there because of the police. One policeman has a clipboard, so he may be writing down all the evidence there is. It may also be a stolen piece since it is just there in the ground, and it may be forgotten or used in some way. I notice that the building beside them is full of graffiti, so this tells me that it is not a church or a religious place for that statue to be there. I also notice that it is in New York or some place in the outskirts of New York since the police badge has the name of the city. It may also be an old picture, since the cars are old, and the picture is in black and white. This is a very rare picture because it can be seen from many different views and can have many background stories to it, but this is my guess.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@JP - it sounds like you are really aware of how many interpretations this image can have! Thank you for sharing yours this morning, and for basing your claims in visual evidence that you see in the picture. I hear you paying special attention to the context of this image - in other words, how the event depicted relates to the setting. You are wondering if the setting is New York at some point in the past. You're also noting the event - which has something to do with the religious statue in the foreground - feels out of place in this non-religious setting. I'd love to know more! What do you see that makes you say this image might have many different background stories to it? What more can we find?
RR (Agartha)
In this picture I see a group of police officers putting a blanket on a virgin statue. They look like they are on a road because there are not a lot of buildings. Also I can observe how it is like an investigation because the police officers have some papers. Then we can see the graffiti on the sign behind. Then other observations can be the cars being unmarked police cars and there is an iron bar beside the virgin.
Claire (AOSE)
@RR Why do you think the man with the blanket is a policeman? He is not in uniform.
M (W H R H S)
This photo looks like a man is covering a statue with a blanket as if it was a dead person. There are also two police officers watching over like it is a crime scene. The photo is also in black and white.
Grace (aose)
@M Do you think the black and white photo has something to do with the time period this was taken?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@M, thank you for your comment this morning, and @Grace, thank you for starting a conversation here! @M, I hear you offering thoughts about what is happening with the figures in this image, but I also hear you paying attention to the way in which this image is represented. You observe this photo is in black and white! @Grace, it sounds like you're expanding on this observation, wondering if the black and white coloring of the image could actually give us more information about the time in which it is set. Let's continue to explore - what do you see that makes you say that?
Christina (AOSE)
@M why do you think that they are covering up this statue like a person?
Grace R (AOSE)
In this image, there are three men looking at a statue of Mary. Two appear to be police officers, and the third may be a regular civilian or even a priest. The three people are outside in an open space, possibly by a highway. There are cars in the background and what looks to be a sign or billboard next to one of the police officers. The sign has graffiti and the grass is overgrown, which tells me that this is not a place where people often visit. The man is also placing a blanket over the statue of Mary. They may be collecting evidence at a crime scene, which is why they are covering the statue with a blanket, trying to protect it. There could be some kind of religious tension in the area, causing the people of two different religions to commit crimes aganst eachother, leading to this picture
Grace R (AOSE)
@Grace R This picture also seems to be taken in approximately the 1980s or sometime around that decade, because the image is in black and white and their clothes are not modern
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Grace R thank you for your observations and inferences related to how sometimes people with different beliefs find ways to disrespect or harm one another.
Nathan (WHRHS)
I think they are trying to solve a case and they are protecting the evidence in the investigation
Jason G (Warren, NJ)
There was a crime scene and the cops are there
Lauren T (AOSE)
@Jason G You should add more details to your answer. There is no right or wrong answer!
Hannah WHRHS (New Jersey)
Policemen are covering a religious statue with a blanket
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Hannah WHRHS Is there anything else in the picture that could help you create a more detailed description?
Pramity (WHRHS)
This image includes a statue that seems religious. It is being covered by the police because it is going to be used as evidence in a court case. This is a crime scene.
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Pramity What leads you to believe that this is a crime scene?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Bella.T, thank you for your response this morning to @Pramity's original comment! @Pramity - it sounds like you are considering what the object in the foreground might be, and you're wondering if it's a religious statue that might be used as evidence. @Bella.T - I hear you digging deeper into the idea that this might be a crime scene. @Pramity - what do you see that makes you say this might be a crime scene? And for both commenters, what more can we find?
Emily M. (WHRHS)
The statue seems to be of Virgin Mary. The police are probably there because of vandalism.
Olivia (WHRHS)
This is a picture of a mary statue being covered due to vandalization.
Alex (WHRHS)
This is clearly Paul Blart’s Mall Cop. Blart is the actor in the middle, and the statue is their dead body prop. The car in the background is from another movie, Back to the Future. The fact that the car is in the background shows the carelessness of the directors.
Evan (Frontier middle school)
@Alex to be fair I agree with this statement. dilly dilly
Christina (AOSE)
@Alex how do you know that this is Officer Blart? Did he have some sort of face-lift?
Dayna (Watchung Hills)
In this picture the statue that policemen are covering up is some sort of religious figure. I think this because there is a beaded necklace on the statue, which could be Rosary Beads. Also, the portrayed person is putting their hands together, as if they are praying.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Brysen C is wondering is wondering if the combination of the graffiti and the fell, displaced sculpture are signed of not just an act of vandalism, but of a wholesale attack on a religious institution. Sad, but true, attacks like this occur too often.
Stevey H (WHRHS)
i think it’s vandalism that happened around a church area, and the police are respecting it
Alice (WHRHS)
There are three police officers covering up a statue. They might Be covering it up for evidence. The statue might Be part of a crime scene.
sophia c (whrhs)
In this picture there is 3 police officers covering the virgin mary and i think that the statue is getting covered because it is a religious crime scene
Kelly (WHRHS)
It was probably vandalism from someone that didn’t agree with that specific religion and the policemen are trying to hide the evidence.
May (WHRHS)
I think the police are cleaning up a crime scene. I think the crime could’ve been something related to religion since the statue looks like its a religious figure.
Anthony L. (WHRHS)
This is a photo of three police officers who recovered a stolen statue from a nearby church.
Claudia (whrhs)
I think that in this picture, police men are covering up a stray statue of mary
Grace (aose)
@Claudia Why would the police be covering the statue with a blanket?
Nicholas (whrhs)
Someome broke into a grave yard and destroyed artifacts. They might now have liked the type of people buried in there. The police showed up to investigate.
Cali (WHRHS)
I think that this statue was used in a crime and the police are there to take it into evidence.
Alysabeth (WHRHS)
More or less there seems to have been a crime scene that had taken place and the policemen around the statue along with the vandalized billboard give this appearance. The statue seems to have been apart of the crime and will be further investigated.
Vincent (WHRHS)
In this picture someone vandalized a statue of Mary and the police are covering it and taking it away. The cops’ expressions make me say that. I also see high grass and a police car and graffiti in the picture.
Ally (Whrhs)
The police officer is covering up the religious statue. This looks like this was taken a while ago because the photo is in black and white, and the car in the back looks old. They might be covering the statue if it is vandalized or is broken.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Several comments believe this image depicts an act of vandalism or hate crime related to religious beliefs and practice. Many of us are placing this photograph in the United States, where the freedom of religion is protected under the First Amendment of the Constitution. What more can you find?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Some are wondering if the statue is part of a tombstone, which marks the grave and honors someone who died. If you concur, what do you see that makes you say that?
Anna (NJ)
In this picture, I think that the statue that the evident policemen are covering up is some sort of religious statue. I think this because there appears to be a beaded necklace on the statue, which could indicate Rosary Beads. Also, the portrayed person is putting their hands together, almost as if they are praying. Another conclusion I can make is that the statue is some sort of evidence. I can conclude this because the policemen are covering it up with a cloth. In the background, there is a sign that seems to be vandalized, which could indicate that a crime had taken place in the area before. The kneeling police man is also holding a notepad almost as if he was taking notes about what thought had happened.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Andrea from South Kitsap High School is wondering if the prone religious statue may be a metaphor for religions that are shrinking in congregants or followers, thereby representing a younger generation.
Aaron (Morganville)
I think that the police/officials are trying to cover up a religious figure. It appears to be a religious figure, since the police are covering it up. They probably would not cover any other figure if it wasn't serious or important. Also, the statue is wearing a crucifix. The setting appears to be a highway, for there is usually vandalism/liter, and the road appears to be continuous and long. There is vandalism/graffiti on the sign behind the police/official, and the most likely religious figure is lying in the bushes/thorns (?) appear to be dead. They are probably covering up the figure, because seeing a figure laying in the ground might offend some people, or it may even be a crime to do such a thing to a figure like that (which would explain the police. The event also appears to be a bit older, for the cars appear to be older models.
TrixRabbit (MMMS)
The statue looks like it is a religious one because of its arms' position. However, it seems that the officers are covering or uncovering the statue. The shadow on the ground next to the officer could be a hole to possibly bury the statue in, but because of the ridiculousness of the supposed burial, and the stern faces of the officers, it seems like the officers could have been reprimanded for not taking the situation seriously (when someone complained about it). On the other hand, the officers could be uncovering an ancient statue that was buried. They could have come across it when in the area as they could have been there for causes relating to the graffiti on the sign on the left. The officers look as if they are waiting in anticipation to see what is under the sheet. The car in the background does not look that modern, so this picture may have been taken some decades ago.
Nate (Fannin Middle School)
In the picture I see what seems to a be Christian like statue being covered up with a blanket by a man while two other officers observe. From the quality of the picture, it looks that picture could've been taken in a period around the 60s and 70s possibly 80s. While looking in the background of the picture you can see a sign that has graffiti. From my observation, I can infer that the statue is a religious statue that has been stolen and discarded. The statue could possibly be the Virgin Mary as stated in the comments below. The possibility they could be covering up the statue is because it has been broken in some sort of way and is being covered up such as a body because people will not want to see the religious piece in the state it is.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
To some this scene is unsettling because the figure with the blanket seems to be covering up the statue the way he might cover up a real body. In this way, the inanimate object is anthropomorphized, or treated like a person. What more do we notice?
Ninosky (Orlando, FL)
I think police officers are uncovering the statue on the side of a road.
Isha (AOSE)
@Ninosky Why do you think they are uncovering the statue? is it possible they could be covering the statues?
Arnav (New Jersey)
In this picture, te detectives are trying to solve a murder case. The stone statue made me previously believe that it was an ancient artifact, but the presence of police in the area made it seem as if it was a legal matter. The fact that it is near a graffitied building displays that the building is in a more urban or run-down area. The overgrown grass also shows that the building is in a more run-down area. Since the statue is being covered with the blanket instead of just being pulled up shows that it may be important. From previous knowledge, I know that during crime scene investigations, people try to determine who had taken part in the crime by looking for fingerprints. Therefore, the fact that they are being careful to avoid hand to statue contact supports this idea. Furthermore, the police officer is holding a clipboard and bending down to take a closer look at the statue. Since he has a large interest in it, it shows, once again, that the statue is of significance. The cars in the background seem to be older models, so I would assume that either the picture has been taken in the past or they do not have the funding to afford newer vehicles.
anushka (mmms)
In this picture, a man has uncovered an ancient statue, presumably of an angel. The way she is standing combined with the look on her face and the way she is holding her hands together shows that she must be some sort of religious figure at the very least, most likely Christian. There are also police officers in the background, and one of them has a notebook, probably to write down observations of the statue's whereabouts and its conditions. The man is standing over her with a cloth, which is probably being used to cover her. There is already another one under her, so they may be trying to transport the statue. It is a very old picture, as the cars in the background look very old.
Riya (Marlboro)
I think someone vandalized a church and knocked down a statue. Ont he sing behind the man who is covering up the statue, there is graffiti. I think the same person who did that also knocked over the statue. The man in the foreground, who I can assume is a policeman, is covering up the statue of the woman with a blanket. The statue looks like some sort of religious figure, so covering her up might have a religious significance. I think this photo is old because the cars in the background look like the older versions of police cars.
Isha (AOSE)
@Riya Why do you think they are covering the statue? They are doing is similarlly to the way one covers a dead body. What significance do you think that has?
Slade (Fannin County middle school.)
I see someone that called the police for vandalism. I think that it would be vandalism because the statue is on its side and the billboard behind it has been vandalized. The man is putting what looks like a blanket over the statue. He is probably doing this so that when he picks it up he wont get poked by anything sharp on the statue. The statue also looks like it has been stolen from a church and been ditched somewhere. I think that because it doesn't look like it is near a church and it has been put on its side so that someone might not see it. It looks like whoever stole the statue almost made a grave for her. I see that because the ground she is on looks like it was just dug up.
phoenix (a school)
It appears that in the picture there are two police officers and a man who is covering up some kind of statue. I believe that what is going on is that someone stole a statue from a church or a museum or something as a joke and left it there on the side of the road and these people are there to retrieve it. I say this because, for one, the expressions on the people's faces are´nt concerned or disgusted. The look like they´er annoyed or maybe even satisfied. This leads me to believe that they had a simple and rather pointless job that was resolved with ease. You can also find that is probably an older photo, because of the cars and uniforms. You can also find that its more than likely winter where this photo was taken due to the clothing the man is wearing and the dead grass around the statue. You can also see pieces of the statue laying around which suggests that it was thrown as if someone was in a hurry.
yeet (marlboro)
In this picture, there seems to be three police officers covering a statue of an angel. They might be covering it because it may be an artifact from many years ago that they want to keep safe. They may have to bring it to a museum or historical site and they do not want it to get damaged on the way there. I do not know when this picture is from because although it is in black and white, any picture from any time period can be made into black and white.
Yuvna (New Jersey )
In the picture, it looks like some officers found a Virgin Mary and are covering it to transfer to another location. It is evident that the men are police officers because they are wearing caps and it looks like they have badges on. Even though the one covering the statue might not be wearing a cap, it looks like he is wearing a red cross symbol. This might mean that he is some sort of medical worker that is carrying the statue since they might have thought it was a corpse at first. The actual statue is probably a Virgin Mary since it looks like some sort of religious symbol. Along with this, on the side there seems to be graffiti on the sign which means that it could be an abandoned area. In conclusion, I think that someone might have called the ambulance thinking that the statue was first a corpse, but it actually ended up being a Virgin Mary statue. The police officers and other workers are taking the statue and putting it probably to reassemble it where it belongs.
D.P (GA)
In this picture three of the local officials are covering a statue with a blanket. The statue was vandalized. I see that the statue is on it's side. It is out of place being on the side of the road. It is also near a sign with graffiti on it. I can find that there is a lot of traffic on the road the statue is near so it could have been anybody.
Grayson willis (Fannin County Middle School)
I think there covering up a statue that has been stolen and thrown on the ground somewhere. The statue is probably hard to move or hard to pick up cause its heavy. The statue is looks like its worth a lot, and it looks like it came from a church sort of cause its wearing a neck less with a cross on it.
Victoria (New Jersey)
In this picture, it is possible that a church was the scene of a recent crime. This is due to the fact that there are police taking a religious figure, as if to analyze it as possible evidence in regards to the crime. They are covering the statue, and, generally, police cover items when they suspect that there may be fingerprints or other evidence on them. Furthermore, the police are looking at the object as if they are confused about something in regards to it. It is likely that they are unsure how to solve the crime and what actually went on, or they may not know how the potential evidence relates to the crime.
Landon (Georgia)
The police is covering up a statue of Mary. I see the cops with a cover and a the statue of Mary and they are covering it up. I can also see that they are in a large field and they found a statue. I know that somebody had to steal this statue and take it somewhere were no one could find it but the cops was able to retrieve the statue and bring it back. I don't know why the person would bring out to a large field area and hide it there and I don't even know why he would steal it. The statue was either stole from a church or a museum.
Arca (New Jersey)
In this picture, a group of police officers are covering a statue with a blanket. The statue appears to be of some sort of religious figure, which I can tell by their clothing and praying hand position. I know that the men are police officers due to their hats, uniforms, and badges. I can see that the man who is putting the blanket over the statue probably isn't a police officer himself, due to his lack of a uniform or badge. They might be gathering or preserving evidence at a crime scene, which would explain why they have pulled over to the side of the road, and the officer who is kneeling down has what appears to be papers or a notepad in his hand, which would be used to record evidence.
Christian c (Georgia)
What I think happened in the picture is someone may have stolen the religious statue and then abandoned it here. The police then found it and moved it back to its original location. It is not in its original location because of the graffiti on the sign behind the police officer. They are putting the blanket on her because she wants to be kept in pristine condition. I think that this is a religious statue because of the cross the women is holding. I also think that this is during winter because of the men's jacket. This is probably off the side of the road because of the sign in the background.
JH (Fannin county, Ga.)
I believe that this picture represents a theft of a statue from a museum. I believe this because the man looks to be covering the statue. I think this man is not an officer for two reasons. First, he is not Waring a uniform. Second, the car to the far left is not a police car. I believe that he is a person from the museum taking back the statue that was stolen. Also, the officer closet to him looks to be a Sargent for the police. He probably was told to come because this statue might be worth a lot of money. Lastly the officer to the far right looks to be dumbfounded about the situation. That is what I believe what this image is.
Stephanie (Daytona Beach)
-This is a black and white photograph that shows 3 men (2 of them are NYPD) looking at a small statue of the Virgin Mary or other Saint lying on the ground. The date of this image looks to be from the late 1970s, or early 80s. The man in the forefront of the image is either removing or covering the statue with a blanket. An accessory of the statue (perhaps a lei?) is lying on the ground to their left. The investigation of the statue's condition/whereabouts suggests this to be a hate crime of some kind. -I identify two of the men as NYPD because they are dressed in uniform and the you can see New York on the badge of the man who is squatting. The man holding the blanket has no visible identifiers that suggest he is a cop, he may be a PI. looks like late Fall or early Winter, they all have jackets and/or gloves on, the grass is dead, and the blanket has a Christmas-like pattern. I suggest late 70s/early 80s due to the style of uniforms and model of cars. -On the far left of the image is the back of a road sign with graffiti on it, which suggest they could be on a highway. There is also another figure in the background, you can see their leg just underneath the standing officer's hand.
Halle (Blue Ridge, GA)
In the picture, the police are covering up an ancient monument, or statue. This could be either a fallen statue, or they took it down. One of the men was wearing a police outfit, which makes me assume that it is a police. I can also infer that it is an old picture because it's in black and white. It appears to be winter time because of how they're wearing jackets. Also, the grass is old and brown. The last thing i can tell is that it's either right next to the road, or in a parking lot. I can tell that because of the lights in the background.
amber (USA)
What I think is going on is that they found this statue laying on the ground. They are looking for what caused it to be laying on the ground. They are covering the statue up with a blanket or a towel or something like that. What makes me say that is one of the police officers is covering up the statue and the other one is taking notes on what they observed and see.
Ben (sms)
The police officers had found a statue that was stolen. I think it happened a long time ago. I say this because the police officers' uniforms seem like they are from a long time ago.
Kayley (SMS)
The cops are covering the virgin Mary statue, because it looks like a body is next to it. I think because it fell and they didn't want to be disrespectful. It could been a tombstone to a grave that has fallen from a storm or some people moved it out of a church or stole it and put it in a bad area.
Emily Kirkham (Port Orchard )
In this photo i think that someone reported a body shaped object under a blanket. The police arrived and uncovered the body shaped object to find a mother Mary statue. This picture was taken in the 1980’s because of the type of police car in the background.
Hannah C (GA)
In this picture I notices that there is police and there is a statue that is on the ground and one of the officer is covering it up with a blanket. Also the statue is some where that looks abandon cause of the writing on the wall and it might be cold cause the officers are wearing coats and the grass and buses are dead .
Katelyn (Usa )
After observing this picture, I think that the three police officers are observing a statue. I also think that this picture took place in the 1950's or 1960's. I think this because the photo is black and white. Also the car looks pretty old. They are also wearing older looking clothes. I also see that there is some graffiti in the picture. This may have something to do with the crime. There are also multiple cars.
Brysen C (GA)
When I see this picture, I notice that the statue seems to have a religious stature. The police are covering the, most likely vandalized, statue. I believe they are covering the statue as if it were a dead body out of respect. This statue may have a religious purpose. In the back I see what looks like a sign. I see much writing and vandalism on the back. I believe there might have been an attack on a religious institute. This would explain the police and the religious statue. They may be celebrating the dead this way.
haley kent (fannin middle school)
I think that they found a statue that belongs to the city. Maybe someone took it and then they tried to hide it. Also, I think that this was in the 1950 or 1960's, because now days people don't really care for things like that. In the picture it shows a car that seems pretty old. Also, the picture is black and white. That is what I think is going on in this picture.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@haley kent can you speak a bit more about what you mean when you say "now days people don't really care for things like that". Do you mean that today people aren't respectful of civic property? Or that people don't like religious statues today? Thanks for clarifying!
Cason (SMS)
In this image the three guys are covering the statue with a blanket. The cars look like they are from the 1970's. The sign behind them is graffiti on it. There is about 5 cars in the background of the picture.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Hi all, keep up the good looking. If you haven't already, don't forget to click on the "larger size" link under the photograph. What more do you notice when you look at a larger version of this image?
jay (glendale)
It looks like they just find a hidden statue or a lost statue. The reason is why I say this is because their covering it for some reason. But , why did they have to cover it and why.
Aaron (SMS)
I know it is in the old days because of their cars and the member only jacket and there uniforms. It looks like they are covering up a statue that fell or they found it.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Aaron when you say "old days" when are you imagining this was taken?
Shailey (SMS)
In this picture it looks like a religious statue has broken and the police a covering it up with something like a blanket and it might belong to a catholic church. It could be a statue that people worship and it has been brought somewhere far away for the place it was at before. This statue might be cursed to and they are covering it up and going to take it to the police station. This seems like it was in the 70s or the 80s.
Juelz (Wisconsin)
I believe that the detective has found evidence of a robbery and is going to take the evidence to the station
Andrea (South Kitsap High School)
Someone had destroyed a religious statue and when people found it they covered it up. It seems as though it’s trying to makes something of it, like very little people believe in something anymore and that some religions are dying because of it. It kinda makes sense because there is graffiti on the sign, and maybe it’s symbolizing a new generation.
South Kitsap (Washington )
This picture looks like it could be placed in the 1960’s or 70’s by the way they dress and since it’s in black and white. The men pictured are police that look like they have stopped on the side of the road. They are behind a road sign that appears to be vandalized significantly. One man is covering up a religious figure with blankets. The figure looks like it could be Virgin Mary since she is holding a cross in her hands. But how and why did that statue get there? And why are the police covering it with blankets? They may be trying to protect it from weather or transportation. However, the statue is out of place and needs to be returned to where it came from.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@South Kitsap I appreciate all the great questions you are asking! Keep up the good work!
Enjoli (South Kitsap High School)
I see a statue that looks like Mary praying being covered by a police man. I also see two other policemen in the back with a cars and the back of a road sign with graffiti on it. This makes me think that maybe they are on a highway roadside. I can’t quite see what the badges and things say on the men's jacket but they look like policemen. I think that maybe this is a piece of evidence from a crime and they are taking it to the station. This would also explain the blanket because using that to pick it up would prevent further fingerprints. The picture seems old because its black and white but also from the style of cars in the background. I feel like rule of thirds applies to this photo. I also think that leading line may apply because all of the men's eyesight travels down to the focus which is the statue on the ground.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Enjoli is drawing our attention to some of the compositional or formal elements of the photograph, specifically about proportions and implied lines (e.g. the gaze of the figures draws our eyes to the focal point of this photograph). Can you share a bit more about what you see that makes you say that the rule of thirds applies?
SKHS (Washington)
I believe that in this picture, they are probably responding to a call about someone destroying the statues at the church, and to calm the people down they’re covering the statues like they would a person.
Diontae (Glendale)
This is a vandalism crime scene i said this because of the staute on the ground and there are police officers
briar (sms)
in this picture they are covering a religious statue and there are cops and bad pictures on the building
saylor (georgia )
In this picture you see three men ,the two on the right side appear to be policeman but I believe the one on the left is a detective or something of that sort, not a policeman. It is illegal to mess or disturb tomb stones so this would be why the cops were involved. this picture is not recent it looks old really old. it also looks like it was taken in a remote place. the statue might of been dumped off on the side of the road im just saying this because it is wha i think of it as
haley kent (fannin middle school)
@saylor I think that this could be true but this statue could be from a different building not just from a church. Other people that believe in Jesus could have put that on there building,
Jayla (WI)
I think there was a crime that happened a long time ago and police officers are gathering evidence that might help solve what happened. I say this because I see a few police officers gathered around a statue trying to cover it up.
CH (South Kitsap High School)
I this photo there are three men standing next to an angel statue that has been put on its side. One of the men is covering the angel in a blanket. The other two men are dressed in police uniforms watching the man cover the angel. I think this picture was taken sometime in the late 1900’s because the uniforms that the cops are wearing seems to be from a while ago and the cars in the background are older models. If this happened in my neighborhood, I wouldn’t really have a reaction because I don’t fully understand what’s happening and why.
TR (skhs)
What I think it is a crime scene of some sort and that were seeing not the full picture and just seeing the first part but I also think the person who is lifting up the balankent the reason why I think it's being lifted is because of the movement of it but it’s also possible it would be covered up but whatever happened it was nere a road because of the sigh behind the guy with the blanket
Rachel (South Kitsap High School)
Three police officers have found/are observing a statue, I’m guessing of the Virgin Mary based on the structure and the cross necklace she’s holding. The statue is lying on its side on a towel or blanket behind a sign, about twenty feet off the road. One of the men is covering it with another blanket or towel. I think that what happened is someone tried to steal the statue, from a church or museum, and then dumped it on the side of the road when they were afraid of being caught. Based on the cars, how the photo is black and white, and how the men are dressed/facial hair, I’m guessing that this photo was taken in either the 1950s or the 1960s, probably in the fall or winter because the trees have no leaves, the underbrush is dead, and the men are wearing coats.
Christian c (Georgia)
@Rachel I completely agree.
Katelyn (Usa )
@Rachel I totally agree
Gwen McCreight (Glendale, Wisconsin)
This picture looks like is from the 1960's because it is in black and white. Also the police outfits look more differently. I think that the police are identifying a crime scene because there is a blanket that the police are using to maybe cover "evidence". Also one of the police are hold a clip board and maybe they were writing things down that where at the crime scene.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Many are thinking about the actions and motivations of the people in this photograph. The man closest to us appears to be either revealing or covering up the statue on the ground--perhaps as a sign of respect, to protect it from further damage, or to prepare it for moving. We also have noticed the man in the middle, crouching down and holding paperwork--perhaps observing or taking in a crime scene in order to record it accurately. What more do you see?
Mrs. Soderdahl's 1/2 Period (Brookside)
The men are investigating something behind a church. It looks like the men are standing in front of a billboard. The picture is in black and white and the cars don't look modern so it probably took place in the past. The graffiti makes us think someone vandalized something and the cops are investigating.
jadyn (south kitsap high school )
In this photo there seems to be three cops uncovering a statue that was covered up by a cloth . maybe the statue was stolen and someone found it and called the cops . the photo was taken in the mid to late 1900s because the car in the background looks pretty old . the statue was probably ditched or thrown out of a window because the statue was on the side of a road .
JH (Fannin county, Ga.)
@jadyn I argre with you for the last part, but not the first. The cloth covering the statue is being put onto the statue. If you look at the bottom of the statue you can see it is being appalled to the statue.
Maggie (SKHS)
This is a black and white photograph of two police and an average looking man looking at a statue. This photo is not recent. Evidence for this is the police’ uniform and the cars in the background. They are both old fashioned. The graffiti suggests that the neighborhood is not well treated. The road in the back looks similar to a highway. This could be an abandoned building. The statue is very out of place. The soft cloth being put over the statue may be for transport.
Mfears04 (south kitsap high scool)
In this photo it looks like they are covering up a religious statue. It looks like there are three police officers and a cop car in the back. It looks like they are next to an abandoned building because all of the graffiti on it.
luna (ontario)
I think that it takes place in the 1970s because it's black and white and take a look at the cars they look really old and I see 2 police officers around the statue and it may be on the side of the highway people thought it may have been a crime or a murder so they called the cops and they came and saw a statue covered up or it may be some kind of joke people decided to do.
Lauren T (AOSE)
In this picture, the police officers encountered a stolen or broken statue. It seems to be in the late 1900's due to the police uniform and the look of the photo. I can find that the statue was dropped off at a abandoned place because of the graphite and dirt all over the place.
Lauren T (AOSE)

Several of today's contributors think this statue represents the Virgin Mary. If you agree, can you please share what you see that makes you say that?
Mariah (NRMS)
Because of the cop in the background they might be investigating some type of crime that happened. The graffiti of the wall makes it look like it is in a part of a run down area and because of the religious statue on the ground it could be at an old church or somewhere religious where they would have a statue outside of the area. Because the man is covering up the statue with a blanket and not surrounding it with tape and a number like a usual crime scene he could be planning to take it somewhere. The cars in the back look pretty old not like any modern day cars so this probably took place a long time ago. The cop on the very right is holding a hammer so maybe they did something and are trying to cover it up?
Uziel (El Paso, TX)
In this picture I see tat there are 2 police officers, and maybe an ordinary man in this old picture. This statue on the ground looks like it belongs in a Catholic Church because it is holding a rosary. The statue could have been stolen, or is being used as a piece of evidence in a crime seen. Maybe someone took it to the graffitied building.
Charles (EHS)
I think the people in the picture are uncovering a statue. I say this because there already is a cloth under the statue and while the person holding the cloth up, the other people look serouisly at what could be uncovered.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Charles is drawing our attention to the facial expressions of the figures and what their expressions might reveal about how they are feeling or what they are thinking. What more can you find?
Maiaa (Ontario)
In this picture i think that the person that probably committed a crime and took the mary statue from the church parking lot and dug a hole and buried it acting like its a person but took the body off and hid it somewhere else because he knew the police were coming to investigate the suspect the police cars look like there from the 80s so maybe this old crime because nowadays this kind of obery inst common
a mrs tiptoes class (texas)
I think that it could be something along the lines of someone removing a tomb stone or part of a tomb stone and relocating it. the cops could have been called to find out why the Mary statue was there and just thrown on the floor. It is illegal to mess or disturb tomb stones so this would be why the cops were involved. there are cars all around in the background so they are most likely near a high way or road. With how the officer is un covering the Mary statue, someone could have thought it was a body since it looks like a body like figure. They uncovered it to find a statue of Mary. The guy bending down on his knees is obviously a police officer by what he's wearing ,the guy uncovering the statue looks like an investigator or something of that nature involving the FBI.
Ruth (Texas)
I see three men surrounding a statue. They look like they can be officers trying to figure out how the statue ( Mary) ended up on the floor. I think that it could have been a crime because it seems for the statue to be just laying down on the floor like that. We can also see graffiti on a building next to where the officers are surrounding. This looks like the picture is not currently taking place because the picture is black and white and not in color like it is now. In the background you can see a car which does not look like the cars that we would use now, so that also tells us that it is not in the current time that we are in.
tipton class (texas)
The statue is christian and is representing mary thers an old 1950 styled car in the background and the glasses that the police officer is wearing was popular in the 50s.Theres is only one cop the stautue is fallen over so it may have a deeper meaning or they see covering the staute as a fomr o f respect.
Lauren T (AOSE)
@tipton class What do you think is actually happening? Your answer seems unclear. I am not trying to be rude.I want to understand what you are trying to say.
Alo McShane (Mrs. Tipton) (El Paso, TX)
Black/white image suggests picture was taken from the 1930s-60s. The expression on the cop's face looks as if he is trying to understand the situation he is investigating. Graffiti on the left on the wall suggests it happened in a poor or abandoned area. Middle policeman uniform suggests he is a higher official within the police rank and they are investigating a religious crime. Car models look as if they were about 50 years ago... Policemen investigate and clean up a religious crime scene in a place of poverty 50 years ago.
Bernard (Tx)
one man is putting blankets around the holy statue another one is a cop and the other one is a cop
jadyn (south kitsap high school )
@Bernard i thinks the person holding the blanket / cloth is uncovering the statue : )
Jackie (texas)
The first thing that I see in this picture is three men. All of then appear to cops or some sort of law enforcers. One of the officers seams to be covering up a statue of what could be a saint. Due to the black and white picture, old police uniforms, and old car we can tell this picture is old. When I look at all of the aspects of the picture I think this is some sort of crime scene. I think someone must have destroyed a church with explained the broken saint, and cops.
Jordan (TX)
I see two police officers looking at a man holding a blanket over a statue. it looks like they are wearing jackets an there are a few cars behind them, I also see a sign and there are some dead trees behind the road. I think that in this picture it might be set around the time of late 1990 to early 2000, they might like in North Carolina or somewhere else on the east coast. In this picture I think that maybe this statue was sitting on the side of the road and this man saw it so he might have wanted it, the police could have thought it was strange that he was on the side of the road like this so they went to investigate. When they saw the man was only wrapping up the statue they realized that it was just left there and began talking with the man. Or someone died and this guy put up the stature and hurried the person, the police saw and they went to pay their respects and maybe thank the man.
angie (moncayo)
In this image I see two men who are police officers. I think this because they are in similar uniforms with badges on them. There is a man who is covering what seems to be a holy statue. The statue is on a unkept area of grass on the side of the road. The wall in the back of the scene has graffiti on it .This picture could have been taken years back because of the style of car and due to the fact that the picture is in black and white. I believe that there was some sort of arguement about the statue and it was moved from its orginial location. I think this because the statue is out of place. Someone may have found the statue and called the athorites. They took the statue serious therefor they treated it as a regular case.
Briana (TX)
In this image there are two officers surrounding a statue. The statue is on the floor and a man is covering the statue with a sheet. The statue is of Mary, but the area they are in is very open and the way the statue is showed its as if someone had committed a murder. With the officers around its a crime scene and they are covering up the body. With the information I think that they have the statue(Mary) as the body, maybe someone moved the statue and brought it to the open area just to leave it lying there. The officers are covering the body as a sign of respect towards they statue and the religion, since in the case with a real body they would want to respect the person.
Alanna (Mrs. Tiptons class)
This picture is black and white which could possibly make it taken in the 1900's, not only that but you can see the cars in the background and they look a little older than modern day times. You can see that there area few policemen there and it seems as if they are covering this sculpture up with a blanket. This could possibly represent a crime scene because they sculpture may represent a person and the police are covering it up.
Fakih (El Paso)
In this picture it appears that they are on the side of the road and that they are police officers. This statue was covered by a blanket or some sort of covering before they are removing it. It doesn't look like the kind of sheets they use for crime so that's why I think that.Since one of the police officers has a clipboard I think this is a lead to a crime or someone gave a notice, or had some sort of suspicion about the covered object. It could resemble a body from a distance if it is covered.
marissa (Nolan Richardson Middle School)
What I think is going on this picture is there is a statue on the floor so it must've been pushed by someone or something. It's probably very valuable because their is some police officers putting a blanket over the statue just as they do to humans. On the statue their is a cross on her neck so the statue might represent christian or catholic. Also the statue looks like Mary.
