Oh man.... how am I now supposed to eat salmon and a kale salad?
Gowanus (Gowanus)
"The grandma pie at Loring Place is not sold by the slice. " Then why is it in this article??
Shelley Olson (Winston-Salem, North Carolina )
Full Moon Pizza in the Bronx! Located in Belmont, the real “Little Italy”! Italian stone carvers we’re employed a century ago to build beautiful Bronx Zoo, which opened in 1899, and wanted to live nearby. This is the origin of NYC’s best Little Italy!
John G (NYC)
What? No Village Pizza?!
AJ (USA)
No mention of DiFara auto-DQs this list
M (CO)
Stromboli's. Period.
steve.plotnick (Oregon)
Tried to resist the temptation, but after reading these comments I can’t let Connie’s Pizzaria on Nostrand and Ave Y go unnoticed. Like so many others hanging out on the streets of Brooklyn in the 60’s this place provided us with sustenance for just a handful of pocket change. And as much as I have tried, I can’t find or make anything that rivals the thin but crisp, doughy crust and simple but mouth watering, just a little bit greasy, sauce and cheese topping. Hey Connie, pass me that shaker of garlic powder now would ya please?
Jorge Rolon (New York)
Italy Pizza on Manhattan Avenue between Calyer and Meserole Sts.
Eric (Oregon)
One bite, everybody knows the rules...
Graham K. (Ottawa)
I spent my summers in the NYC area growing up, and my favourite would have to be Joe’s Pizza on Carmine, hands down! Another one that didn’t make the list is Lombardi’s, near SoHo, in the NoLIta area.
Jeremy H ay (California)
Freddie & Peppers (location redacted). Consistently for at least 30 years, and by far and away, one of the top three slices in the city. And with the special salsa, it moves to #1.
L (NYC)
Don't know anything about Joe's on Carmine St., but if the Joe's on East 14th St. west of Third Ave. is part of their "family" that location falls far, far short of even 'good'. Most of the 14th St. pies are pre-baked to a certain point, then held until they're put in the oven to "finish" when needed. So, if you go in & order a slice from a pie that's been sitting on the counter awhile, they have to heat the slice up AGAIN, which makes the THIRD time it's been baked, and usually the underside is burnt. NOT good, and not recommended; it oughta come with a side of pepto bismol.
CW (Ct.)
Brados on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn, They sell slices at lunch with a 2 slice and a coke special for $7 (add another for lots of button mushrooms or tomato). GREAT thin crust pizza.
Mrs. Calabash (Brooklyn)
Thank God, he skipped right over the very best of the bestest-best. And no, of course I'm not naming any names either. The waiting time is already much too long. Some of you know exactly who I mean and the rest of you, please enjoy your perfectly-OK but not exactly best slices.
JP (Westchester County, NY)
@Mrs. Calabash. Best post in the thread. Email me with the name of the joint!
Ben Walker (London)
Sauce Pizza. Fabulous.
jeff (nv)
As you can see from all of the comments, if you ask 10 people to pick their 10 favorites, you will get a list of 100 places.
Rahul (Philadelphia)
I get a laugh at these best pizza, best burger, best fries articles. These are not gourmet foods that one can rate.
Sharon (Los angeles)
@Rahul Huh? You certainly can rate food that is not "gourmet" - a subjective term.
Jeff (Brooklyn)
Vic’s Original Pizza on Kings Highway in Brooklyn. They’ve been there since the 1960’s. It’s amazing.
Dark Sunglasses (cleveland)
@Jeff Jeff is owner of Vic's Original Pizza on King s Highway in Brooklyn.
jess (brooklyn)
And if we allow places that don't sell by the slice, Lucalli walks away with the honors.
andryuschka (UWS)
My favorite slice, by far, is the white with caramelized onions at Best Pizza in Williamsburg. I agree that many of the slices in the piece and the comments are tasty, but this is one a step above. Almost like eating a focaccina con le cipolla at Orlando's in Forte dei Marmi - childhood memories... yum.
NYC woman (NYC)
On the Upper East Side, Little Luzzo's at 119 E 96th St is the best. Their potato gorgonzola slice is especially delicious.
TS (Manhattan)
The best Sicilian squares I've ever had--and I've been all over Italy, lived in Boston, and have lived in Manhattan for 40 years--are from Artichoke Pizza on East 14th Street. Toothsome, succulent, and delightfully filling, those squares are the stuff of dreams. And they deliver!
Cassandra Brightside (Brooklyn, NY)
For a good old school slice, Delmar Pizza, Sheepshead Bay Road & Voorhees Avenue... A great, traditional slice. Two Boots the original on Avenue A. Always fabulous. Best old school pie (no slices) is --- Denino's Tavern, West Brighton, Staten Island. "In Crust We Trust".
Bklyn born (UWS)
Yes!!! Delmar's is definitely the best in NYC! Excited to see it being recognized here!!!
jess (brooklyn)
Where is Di Faro? Still the best slices in the city.
James (NYC)
The Artichoke spinach Sicilian Pizza at the Fairway in Harlem is the best.
M Veliz (Irvine, California)
I kept looking for Grimaldi's and yup, the title says it: slices... I like how they snuck in with the title... As far as slices for me... Bleeker's thin was pretty good back the day. Of course I haven't been to the city in a few years--which in NY is an eternity. Enjoy all those of yus who can...
Karl V. (Oregon)
San Mateo for the clam pizza!
Michael Worthington (Brooklyn)
Di Fara's.
Joe Wolvek (Boston MA)
I may live in Boston now, but I grew up in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. I have to say that I'm shocked...SHOCKED, that DiFara's on Avenue J is not to be found on this list. Dom makes everything from scratch, from quality ingredients just like he did a half-century ago. Any time I go back and have a slice, it opens a time-space wormhole to my child-brain.
Former NYer and Public School Grad (Columbus, Ohio)
Pete, where is the love for Staten Island? 'The Rock' may have some of the greatest NY style pizza joints in the world. Denino's, Joe and Pat's, The Original Goodfellas, to name just a few. Please expand your horizons and head to the forgotten borough. There are very few, valid, things that Staten Island has to 'toot its horn' regarding. Pizza is one of them.
Mike (NYC)
@Former NYer and Public School Grad I could be wrong, but last I remember, none of those were slice joints. Great pizza, but this list is about slices.
Linda S. (Windsor CT)
I grew up around the corner from Joe and Pat's. I remember going there with $1.25 after school. Enough for a slice and a small, fizzy fountain coke. Heaven!!!
John Koch (Los Angeles)
I'm from Queens but I live in LA. But my center is Queens. GLORIA'S PIZZA is one of the most delicious and perfect slices I've ever had-- and trust me I've eaten a lot of pizza in my 45 years. There's some great pizza parlors on this list, but Gloria's is sorely absent. If you live in Queens, you probably know it. If you don't, you should visit. It's a little nondescript joint next to a movie theater... but the taste is otherworldly. The ratio of oil, cheese, sauce, crust is simply perfect. I'm back to NYC often for work, and I've made many a driver pull over for a slice. I've bonded with many cabbies over Gloria's. My 11 year old son has a Gloria's shirt and tells kids in LA about it. We go back east for Met games and Gloria's. This place brings me back to childhood, when I visited their former Main Street location, which closed back in the 90s. When they reopened in 2012, I happened to be in NYC and it was magical. Check it out. Gloria's Pizza http://www.gloriapizza.com/ 108-22 Queens Blvd. Forest Hills, NY 11375 Tel: 718-263-1100
Sharon (Schenectady NY)
@John Koch I'm well over 60 and have never had a slice as good as Gloria's.
Andy (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Best pizza slices in New York? There's no such thing. The best New York pizzaiolos move to New Jersey.
H. C. Ricks (Chicago)
Don't bother with NYC. Just come to Chicago.
alex (East)
@H. C. Ricks If only Lou mal’s had pizza by the slice! But alas...
jess (brooklyn)
@H. C. Ricks If you like heavy thick crusted pizzas then you’re right. But New York pizza is about a crust that’s only slightly heavier than a sheet of paper, where the flavors come from the sauce, cheese, and toppings, while the dough complements them. Chicago pizza is deep dish pies, and the thick dough predominates.
Garbanzo (NYC)
Didn't know the tomato and cheese soup in a bread bowl that passes for Chicago pizza could actually be sold on a slice basis. Good to know.
pbilsky (Manchester Center, VT)
Koronet at 111th and B'way. They have a 24 inch pie if you are really hungry, but their regular slices are pretty perfct. Is it just me but in an article about the 10 best pizza 'slices' Pete Wells talks more about squares and Sicilian? Those ain't slices. They are squares. PB
James Forrest (Bed Stuy)
No Saraghina in Bed Stuy?! Im boycotting Pizza.
Sssur (NYC)
Claudio's. 8th Ave btwn 26 and 27. Husband and wife operation. They speak Italian. Classic old school NYC slice place. Terrific, fresh pizza all the time. No pretense.
mememe (pittsford)
Destination slices?! Please. Nothing beats your neighborhood corner pizzeria when you crave a slice of pizza in NYC.
Jeff (Westchester, NY)
For your readers who now live in Westchester, Sal's in Mamaroneck is a pretty darn good slice. As a Brooklyn kid, born and raised, I have at least a little cred.
PsychedOut (Madison, WI)
@Jeff I grew up in New Rochelle and I still stop at Sal’s when I’m back in New York. How I miss good pizza in the Midwest.
Someone (Somewhere)
@Jeff Glenville Pizza, in that neck of the woods.
Leaf (San Francisco, CA)
Really? No John's Pizza on Bleecker street?
Michael Worthington (Brooklyn)
@Leaf They don't do slices. As stated in article.
usedmg (New York)
New Park Pizza is unremarkable, except as the site of Michael Griffith's last meal
Ariann Costa (NYC)
John's Pizza on Bleeker Street! an original OG
Michael Worthington (Brooklyn)
@Ariann Costa Read the article. As stated, they don't do slices. Article is on slices.
Vietnam veteran (NYC)
My four granddaughters always say .... “grandpa you eat too much pizza”. My response is .... “of course I do”, and then smile. For me, pizza has always been my favorite .... I have been to two of the places mentioned in the article, hope to get to the others.
Glenn W (Colorado)
Trio Pizzeria, Ave U in Brooklyn! I grew up near that section of the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in the 1960's, and pizza was a staple. Slices were $.50 and the Italian ices (lemon!) were $.10 in the little paper cups. Man, I miss those days when the olive oil dribbled down our chins and hands. Now, that was serious pizza!
marion (New York)
New Park Pizza in Howard Beach is a whole 'nother level of pizza. The scarbarous service also gives one a frisson of fear as well!
Walter Hosp (Scarsdale, NY)
Maybe not classic pizza, but please give Two Boots (I have only been to the one in Grand Central Station) at least an honorable mention for great tasting, creative pizza that is consistantly high quality.
JsBx (Bronx)
@Walter Hosp; I was sad when they left Grand Central, but there is one on Lexington between 39th and 40th -- and they still have my favourite "the Dude."
AGuyInBrooklyn (Brooklyn)
For slices, Prince Street Pizza's square pepperoni slice is amazing. The ronis are unbeatable. Deserves to be on the list. And as a Brooklyn Heights local, shout out to Fascati's which is also fantastic, though it's a more generic slice. If we're talking pies, Lucali is the clear winner, but keep the toppings to a minimum. Roasted garlic and basil will do it.
nabrxx (ny, nyq)
Patsy's....very glad that it made the list...nice and thin, crunchy as well as chewy...and high quality ingredients. Better to go inside and order a pie--chow down!
Full Name (New York, NY)
Joes, New Park and Patsys, as represented in the photos in this article are the only Pizzerias that can be classified as "old-school". Real NY pizza is just plain pizza. A restaurant critic should not be assigned to review "old-School" pizzerias, because he can't help himself; he's got to include mostly gourmet-type pizzerias that offer all kinds of toppings and weird variations from the classic "old-school" slice. The first photo in the article looks absolutely nothing like an "old-school" pizzeria.
jess (brooklyn)
@Full Name By your criteria diFara wouldn’t make the list, and they’ve been serving slices for at least 50 years. And back in the day any pizzaria would have been happy to make you a pepperoni pie, and if they were really old school, they’d toss on a little basil.
Sharon (Schenectady NY)
@Full Name Thank you. I look at all that stuff on the pizza and I cannot believe it. If I wanted a salad I'd order one.
David Barr (NYC)
I will always miss Stromboli's on University Place.
Buck (Brooklyn)
Stromboli’s was great for a long time, but it cannot be ignored that it inexplicably went way downhill in its last few years...
Still looking for good pizza (Chicago)
Grimaldi’s. Foot of the BK bridge in the borough it was named after. God, I miss their pizza. Rustique, Porta, or Razza in Jersey City. 10x better than any pizza I’ve ever had since moving to Chicago.
JamesP (Hollywood)
@Still looking for good pizza I was looking for Grimaldi's too, but then I remembered they don't sell slices. Fascati's in Brooklyn Heights has a killer slice.
Michael Worthington (Brooklyn)
@Still looking for good pizza Grimaldi's doesn't do slices. Article is on places that do slices. And these days Juliana's, owned by Patsy Grimaldi, blows Grimaldi's out of the water. Right next door. See who has the better reviews and longer lines.
Jim (Hell's Kitchen)
Sacco Pizza 9th Ave & 54th. Their plain slice is simple and delicious. That's a true test of pizza greatness.
Todd (nyc)
NY Pizza Suprema, 31st & Eighth - Gotta try their grandma slice. Right up there with the very best.
Some guy (Chelsea)
NY Pizza Suprema looks like it shouldn't be good, next to Penn with a poor name, but it's the best pizza by the slice in the city.
Justin (Manhattan, NY)
@Todd Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find a shout-out for Suprema. Todd knows what's up.
